Woods Rider Development School. The Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club in conjunctions with Wisconsin Woods Rider Development (WRD) and Moose Racing has announced its 1st annual Woods Rider Development school on Saturday, May 14th at the Dyracuse Recreational Park. The class is open to all riders 16 years of age and younger, and will be free to all participants (park fees apply). The goal of WRD is to continue to expand the reach of Hare Scramble and Enduro racing and offer an easy introduction to these racing disciplines. The School will start at 10 am and last about 5 hours with a lunch break. All bike sizes are welcome. Some of the topics covered will include bike setup, mental approach & strategy, rules, gear setup, technical drills from log crossings, to hill climbs, to turning, rock sections, and of course lots of riding with the coaches to apply the newly acquired skills. Speaking of coaches, we have solicited the help of some of our local greats including Pete (Speedy) Laubmeier, JD Friebel, Ryan Moss, John Strangfeld, Heath Drone, and others (we will update this as we get closer). “WRD is excited to be able to provide this service to all young riders who have considered giving woods racing a try or improve their current woods riding skills, but haven’t really had the opportunity to explore this further” says Wolfgang Neuwirth, spokes person for WRD. There will be limited space available for this school, as we would like to keep the rider number per group small and manageable and maximize results, so sign up early. Download the parental consent form from the Rapid Angels website, complete it and e-mail it to Wolfgang at wolfgang@smacsite.com to reserve your spot. You can also mail it to WWRD, attn. Wolfgang, W5552 Briarwood Rd., Elkhorn, WI 53121. Depending on space availability, sign up will also be available at the event. www.rapidangels.com. The event will be sponsored by the Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club, Moose Racing, Silkolene Oil, and more (tba). District 16 Schedule changes (several): Details on a new Hare Scramble event are being finalized as we get the issue ready for print. May 15th looks to be the date, and it will be held in Adams County, about 12 miles north of Wisconsin Dells by the Madison Motorcycle club. The Trials event scheduled for April 17th in Mauston has been moved up to the 10th, still ran by WOTA. Pearson Enduro May 22nd cancelled. Despite all the efforts and support from fellow clubs, DNR members and more, the special use permit was not able to be obtained due to an odd concern relating to an invasive plant. The South Eastern Wisconsin Enduro Riders will continue to pursue to reopen this venue, and work on alternatives for future events in Wisconsin. D17’s WFO Promotions changed and updates. There was some last minute confusion over the April 24th Atkinson hare scramble date being changed. It is still running April 24th. Changed, is the Dirt Track event originally scheduled for June 26th, it has been cancelled. Newly added are to swap meets. Both are open to the public, and selling spots are available for as little as $10. One will run the Saturday before the Atkinson hare scramble on April 23rd. The other will be held on June 25th, the Saturday before Muddy Waters MX race, right there at the track. For more info contact Ron at 309-314-3343.

Schoolboy class on the line. It was nice to see even the cold couldn’t keep a good turn-out away.
Opening Day for D17 Motocross Casey, Illinois - March 13 By James Pinckard Photos by James and Phyllis Blume
made it less than perfect for the spectators, and most of the riders didn’t like it with a lot complaining about cold hands. Even with all this, the one thing cool cloudy weather does is he motocross season for AMA District give you a great track! The crew at LTM did 17 kicked off at Lincoln Trail Motoa great job with the track which was deep sports Park in Casey, IL. After what when practice started, resulting in multi lines seemed like a very long winter, the weekend in every corner and no dust. Track owner Tim started off with a beautiful day on Saturday said, “We are trying to make changes that upfor the open riding. On Sunday old man wingrade our track every year. We have made upter showed his true colors, and cold was back grades to the grounds, hired new medical staff for the event. With clouds and 33 degrees it and have many other changes in the works.” The first class to leave from the gate in 2011 was the Schoolboy. In the first moto Yamaha rider Cody Williams showed why he came from Wisconsin to race! Williams had his bike screaming around the groomed track to eventually take the first moto win. Husky rider Joseph Aumiller had his 125 on the gas finishing second ahead of Suzuki rider Jacob Smothers. In the second moto Williams was again flying and took the win for the overall as well, leading Aumiller in second. The battle was for third beZach Loehr won both the 125cc and 250B classes.
T
tween Honda rider Keeze Carver and Smothers. These two charged hard the whole moto, but in the end Carver finished third for the moto. His sixth in the first moto left him with fourth overall as Smothers took third. Always one of the biggest classes of any event is Open C, and that held true again. In the first moto KTM rider Ken Doerdelmann took the win with Aaron Carter second ahead of Phil Kaduk. As with most C classes you never know what can happen and when the gate dropped for the second moto the riders were mixed and when they sorted out the Kawasaki of Kaduk was out front and running strong. Behind Kaduk, Carter placed his Yamaha in second with Honda rider Caleb Gilbertson third. With the second moto win Kalmuck edged out Carter for the overall. Third overall went to first moto winner Doerdelmann who finished fourth in the second moto. With the C class done they were all watching the Open A class strut their stuff. Each moto Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond took the holeshot. Yamaha rider Ty Tyrrell put in some very clean laps giving him the win in both motos. Honda rider Ryan Tracy also looked good, and finished second both motos. The battle of the class was between Kawasaki rider Quentin Jones and Yamaha rider Anthony Krivi. In the first moto Jones had Krivi covered and took third. In the second moto Jones had some issues and Krivi nailed down third for third overall. In Open B it was anyone’s race. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Ben Elson put in a great ride taking the win. Kawasaki rider CYCLE USA, April 2011 7
Brady Neys finished second with Brandon Nordmeyer third. When the riders lined up for the second moto Elson wasn’t able to start. With Elson out Neys picked up where he left off and took the moto and overall win. KTM rider Jake Grafelman put in a great ride taking second for the moto and overall. Third went to KTM rider Nordmeyer. You know there is nothing like hearing the scream of a 125 two-stroke. It has to be the fastest growing class in motocross. I don’t know if it is the cost of the bikes, the ease of working on them or the fact they are fun to ride, but when this class is the second biggest of the event it’s time to take notice. In the first moto Suzuki rider Zach Loehr was hauling taking the win. Yamaha rider Cody Williams was back and on the gas for second while David Wilson finished third. After the race I told Zach’s father his son looked good out there. He said, “He is having some problems with the cold. We just got back from Texas riding and the temps were around 80 degrees.” With the way he was riding if he was having problems the pack will be in serious trouble when it warms up! In the second moto Loehr again took the win giving him the overall. Williams put in an outstanding ride, staying with Loehr while pulling the rest of the pack. Third across the line was Husky rider Joe Aumiller edging out Wilson. In 65Sr KTM rider Drake Bailey took

the first moto win with KTM rider Dustin Foley second and Jason Gepford third. In the second moto it was very exciting with Gepford in the lead with Bailey having to charge
hard from behind. As the race was coming to an end it was clear it was going to be close, and in the last turn Bailey made the pass for the moto and overall. Gepford’s second place
finish put him into second overall with Foley third for the moto and overall. In 85Jr Suzuki rider Dawson Ryker put in an outstanding ride to take both moto wins. In the process he caught most of the Sr class that were in a stagger in front of them. Second overall went to Dalton Hancher with third going to KTM rider Drake Bailey. In the 85Sr class, one rider Ryker wasn’t going to catch was Jordan Mackieniz who took both moto wins. Second went to Yamaha rider David Mcclain with third going to Gage Noblitt. Even though it was a little cold, the racing was great, the track was beautiful and everyone had a good time. It was really good to be back at the track. With that I must say “Welcome to 2011”.

Steelshoe Beats Deep Freeze Campbellsport, Wisconsin - January 23 By Dave Hollub
A
s I pulled out of my garage and glanced at the thermometer, which read -13 F, my first thought was what am I doing? I could stay home, sleep in, and then watch the Packers play the Bears for the Championship. As I pulled up to Nan-Sea’s Tiki Bar on Kettle Moraine Lake I got my first glimpse of the course layout, and right away knew I was going to see some great racing. Jeff Fredette had made the trip up Friday to lay out the 6.2 mile course that had everything from his trademark snail shells to WFO straights. As practice started the temperature had climbed to a balmy zero, but nobody seemed to notice the cold once bikes started firing up. This year the start was set up as a Lemans type with the bikes lined up on one side of the start and the riders about 20 yards across from them. At precisely 11AM the gun fired and riders ran to their bikes. Team Al’s Auto Salvage (Norman LaRose/ Paul Philbrick/ Eron Ezrins) fired up fast and just edged out the KTM of Team Fa-Kaw-Wee (Michael Babka/ Matt Sawinski/ Eric Kolenda) and Team Hot Hand (Paul Buettner/ Danny Vrana) for the holeshot. By the time lap one finished both Beaver Cycle Club’s bikes were out front but JR Schnabel riding the Cedar Creek Motorsports
entry was close behind. Unfortunately bikes started dropping out soon after the start from mechanical issues, but those that stayed on the course made for some great race viewing. The top two lightweight bikes from Lemon Pie Production (John Stewart/ Marc Ottenad) and Action Xtreme (Zack Genrich/ Trevor Schmitt) had a battle going between themselves as they pushed their way to a fourth and fifth overall finish. They traded positions many times throughout the race. Stewart was the final rider for Lemon Pie and by his calculations gas was going to be close as he crossed the finish just seconds before the 3 hour mark and had to make one final lap. In Stewart’s words later “The course was great, no crashing for me. We did three stints an hour each. The little light bike does great in that stuff, you can go outside in the fluff and it works great. We had a bit of a lack of fuel management at the end. About four corners from the end the bike bogged hard and I knew right away what the issue was. I clicked up to top gear and throttled it nice and easy through the last couple corners. It died just before the finish and I coasted it across completely out of gas. Marc

had figured the checkers should be out before I came across so he was freaking out in the pits figuring I would run out for sure. We were already past our window for being sure we would make it. A big fast track like that we were wide open on all day with that bike, but it worked out in the end.” Ottenad added, “It went great. I fell once but I think I rode pretty good and the bike ran great all day. Stew made the tires himself and they worked great. On a lightweight bike the track was great. We were at a disadvantage on the high speed straights but I like the high speed entry into the corners on the little bike. I loved the layout, the track was nice and wide, and they maintained it great. I think it was the best track they have had in years and I really enjoyed it. I have to thank our team sponsor Lemon Pie Productions/ John Stewart for making the great ice tires they worked per-

fect all day.” Of the Middleweight Bike class entries Ducati Milwaukee (Scott Fittshur/Ryan Gilbert) finished sixth overall and A Glenwenck & Sons Exc. (Josh Vanderberg/ Jake White) finished seventh to top their class. Schnabel made his way to the front and held on to the lead to the checkers despite a hard push from both Beaver Cycle bikes. As the race came to the three hour mark it was Schnabel out front, completing the most laps, but once everything was tabulated he faced a DQ because the race is set up as a team event and his partner was unable to do any race laps today. Schnabel told me, “I rode it myself but it is a team event so I knew going into it I would get DQ’ed. I went into it knowing I was going to run the whole race but it is for the Steelshoe Fund. It is a charity event so I went out had a good time racing with my buddies for three hours and it is for a good cause. Just an awesome track today, the guys that put the track together did a great job. A 6.2 mile track is awesome and believe it or not by the end I knew the track. The scary part wasn’t in the beginning when I didn’t know the track but the middle when I thought I knew it. You think you know the corner but it ends up being a tighter radius when you think it opens up. By the end of the three hours, the last half hour, I knew every corner and then you can really start setting a good pace. I had a lot of fun, that was the big thing. I had my new Kawasaki for the first time and it worked awesome. It was flawless. Thanks to the guys that sponsor me, Monster Energy Kawasaki, Bill Warner Racing, and Cedar Creek Motorsports which also helped sponsor this event.
It just shows what a great dealer they are.” Due to Schnabel’s DQ the Beaver Cycle Club bikes topped the overall and the Heavy weight class with Brock Schwarzenbacher/ Jesse Janisch on top and #2 Eric Mischler, Dan Mischler, and Nick Smith in second. Motocross rider Sam Long was out on the ice for his first time today and he filled me in on his thoughts about ice racing. “Ice racing is pretty cool. This was my first time out here and I want to try mixing it up a bit this winter between snowmobiling, motocross, and ice riding. I’m looking forward to the two hour on Wallace Lake and definitely want to continue with the ice riding. The course was really long and throughout the day it got really rough. I never thought the ice would get breaking bumps and ruts, it was pretty brutal. I would like to thank Interstate Sawing, Mid Cities Motorsports, No Fear, Williams Motor Works, and my Mom and Dad.”
Matt Sawinski on the Team Fa-Kaw-Wee bike
Al Sumner along with his family headed up the Steelshoe and he filled me in on the day’s highlights, “Another successful event, we had 50 teams out here today, I believe. Just one injury that I know of. A nice day and the riders are all very happy with everything. The track was a bit longer than we thought it

H
ill Climbers from all across the upper Midwest got together at Treasure Island Resort in Red Wing, Minnesota to crown their 2010 season champions for AMA District 23. The Indianhead Motorcycle Club of Red Wing once again took on the responsibility for hosting the banquet, which opened mid-afternoon with sign in and time to catch up with each other on what’s been happening in the long off season before dinner and the awards presentations. The big news to come out of the off season this year was the re-opening of the hill in Bay City, Wisconsin for climbing again this year. The old timers will remember this hill, but many of today’s riders weren’t even born yet the last time they ran there in 1991. You’ll want to be sure to keep September 4th open so you can be there when riders from all over the Midwest tackle this 500 foot monster with three breakers, that gets steeper the farther you go. After dinner, master of ceremonies Kaleb Northrup took the stage and opened the ‘official’ portion of the evening by taking a moment in memory of Harry Exner, a young rider well known in the sport, tragically taken from all of us while in Colorado attending college last December. Harry will always be remem-
bered fondly. Next it was time to recognize and thank all the sponsors for their generous support followed by a few other announcements from the district on rules, memberships, and a look ahead at the schedule for the upcoming season. Finally it was time to hand out some trophies. There were a few riders that managed

to ride their way to the top in more than one class. Luke Cipala was the first with championships in both the 65cc and Mini-Jr. classes. Marcus Winch also doubled up with championships in the 250cc and 600cc classes. Luke Parmeter was the final rider to get two championships for the district. He will be sporting those number one plates on his KTMs in the 750cc
and 4-Stroke classes. Once all the class awards had been given out, these folks always have a few specialty awards to recognize some outstanding performances over the past season. First up was Luke Cipala to take the Brad Gerdes memorial trophy for most points in a single class with a perfect 150 point season in the 65cc class. Next up was the Danny Mears memorial trophy for outstanding performance in the 200cc class which went to Dylan Nichols for the second year in a row. Jay Sallstrom was next up on stage to receive the 80-Open fastest rider of the year trophy. Each of these is a very large trophy that changes hands year to year depending on performance. The next award given out was the King of the Hill for Minnesota/ Wisconsin and once again went to Todd Cipala who has won this award all but one year since I started covering hill climbs. The final awards were for youth and amateur rider of the year. The youth award went to Luke Cipala for dominating two classes in Districts 23 and 16. The amateur award was a tough call with several riders having had a great season last year, but it went to Aaron Prebe with multiple class wins in two districts as well as National Championships in two classes. Congratulations to all the riders on a great season.

Triplecross Awards Evening Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin - January 29 By Dave Hollub
A
s everyone gathered in the Wintergreen Resort Ballroom it was hard to remember that the MX season ended three months ago, and it was below freezing outside. The room was filled with the noises of friends meeting up and bench racing over some of the more memorable motos of 2010. Everyone was also looking over the tables full of door prizes donated by series sponsors. Harvey Schave, the new series coordinator began the program by filling us in on what to expect in 2011. Once again in 2011 Aztalan Cycle Club, Arkansaw Cycle Park, Gravity Park, and Denmark Sports & Competition will be the host tracks. The series will consist of fifteen races (ten of which will also be District 16 point events), the first of which will be at Aztalan on April 10th. The Yamaha rider contingency will be paying out at four races, and in 2011 KTM will begin a contingency payout to the top three in the season results for each class if you are on a qualifying KTM. In order to be eligible for the KTM Contingency you will need to register at XTRM.com and then come out and join the fun. The program then moved into awards for the 2010 season. First up to kick off the KTM contingency three KTM riders from 2010 were drawn at random. Kaitlyn Falk was drawn first and collected a $300 KTM gift certificate, Seth Doeberlein collected $200 and Brady Bill took home $100. The Meehans once again collected signatures from riders at the Millville pro national on a jersey and Helmet as well as a

jersey at the MXoN this summer. All three items were raffled off by selling tickets all summer. When the drawing was finished Jake Luginbuhl took home the MXoN jersey and Vic Hordis won the helmet. Season awards were handed out and each competitor took home a custom Triplecross plaque. Next up were the door prizes and one of the happiest people in the room was AJ Meidl as he was called up to take away a new Yamaha TTR50 compliments of Triplecross. A new twist was added this year allowing riders to turn in receipts for purchases made at series sponsors for tickets to a special drawing. This drawing entitled two winners the first chance to claim any prize

from the loaded tables. It was interesting watching as many riders skipped big ticket prizes and went straight for the essentials to make sure they would be ready for the 2011 season. A very popular Item was the sets of free gate admissions to races in 2011. Once the tables were cleared (and it took quite a while as everyone went up several times) another lucky rider was drawn to claim a new Kawasaki KLX 110 from Southeast Sales compliments of the Triplecross Series. The room was quiet as Schave called out the winning ticket numbers in reverse. There were some moans around the room as more people sat down being eliminated but in the end it

was Billy Menzel still standing to claim the bike. The Triplecross series is always a good test of where you stand among other riders and I got a chance to talk with the Woman’s class Champion Kendra Randrup as she told me, “It was a good season. I had a couple of crashes this season in practices but I got a lot of experience and a lot better and faster this year. A couple of people told me that I and another buddy I ride with a lot improved more than anybody. It was scary riding my 85 out there with the big bikes, especially at the starting gates. As I am going off the line and people start crowding me in I can’t do much because their handlebars are hitting my shoulders. Once we are on the track it gets a lot easier. I want to thank my sponsors Tim’s Repair Service, Westside Auto Body, Horban Enterprises, and especially my Mom and Dad for taking me around to the races.” Schave on the series, “2010 went very well, it was a bit challenging getting sponsors but the guys that stepped up were great. We are still working out some things for 2011 but we have KTM on board for series end award/ payout. We are looking forward to Yamaha again in 2011 being a big part of the series. We will be continuing the program that we started this year which gave out free admission gate passes to Triplecross members for either winning their classes, or be selected in a drawing at each race to help cut their costs down. There will also be prize drawings for Triplecross racers at each event. For 2010 we had Ride Sports, Rays Mountain Bike, Yamaha, Southeast Sales, Tucker Rocky, Smith Optics, Answer Racing, Spectro Performance Oils, Juice Plus, MSR Racing, ProTaper, GT Printing, and M7D Media as series sponsors. Rock River Powersports, Aztalan Inn, and The Crawfish Junction also stepped up and donated prizes for tonight. I want to say thanks to every one of them because they made the series a success for the riders.” After talking to several of the riders present the common theme was COME ON SPRING we are ready to race. With the hard work of the Triplecross crew, great sponsors, and dedicated riders 2011 will be a great season. wenty-three race teams and over seventy participants braved yet another Minnesota snow storm that offered thirty mph wind gusts and freezing temperatures. They came to pay homage to the legendary “Ice King” by competing in the fourth annual three hour John Larson Memorial Endurance Ice Race held on the frosty shores of Long Lake in Isanti, MN. The event was hosted by the “Captains’ on Long Lake” lounge and sponsored by Larsons Cycle, Kold Kutter Ice Screws and Flattrackmn.com. The grand prix style race course was two miles in length and consisted of twenty six turns where some of the faster riders recorded lap times in a little over two minutes. The event rules were simple. Teams could be up to four riders, and they could use multiple bikes. The team finishing

the most laps at the end of the grueling three hour grind would emerge the winner, and that fell to the two rider team of siblings Erick and Jake Bostrom who completed seventy five laps.
The event drew riders from several disciplines including motocross, dirt track, enduro, hare scrambles, road racing and a few ice racers who just like riding their lawn mowers in the summertime. As one would expect, attrition played a factor and several teams were seen scrambling in the pits performing repairs that ranged from broken fenders and flat tires to destroyed wheels. Even 2009 World Ice Racing Champion Kevin Anderson was on hand, “I just came out to help my brother Cole’s team on a last minute notice,” Anderson explained. “I haven’t even swung a leg over his bike before so I’m not used to it.” Anderson started the race and was running toward the front of the pack for several laps before making a rider change. Unfortunately their bike suffered some wheel damage and later Anderson was seen running laps aboard a back up 125cc Yamaha. There were several door prizes raffled off afterward that included a brand new helmet, riding gear and other nifty stuff. Also Team Chaffey (who finished third) picked up a $250 bonus from event sponsor Kold Kutter for completing the first full lap while using the Kold Kutter brand ice racing screws. Every year an “Iron Man” trophy is awarded and this year’s award was handed to local ice racing veteran Scott Williams. So, with today’s technology of computers and fancy transponders one would think scoring the race would be would be a cinch… not so. There was one person sitting in a van at the finish line jotting rider numbers down and keeping track of 23 bikes for three hours of non-stop racing. Bayley Boehlke deserves a big thank you from everyone involved. Tischler holds on at Plymouth Culver, Indiana - March 27 By David Dunnuck
T
he first 2011 Plymouth Blackhawks MC Harescramble was held Sunday March 27th near Culver, Indiana. The three days of rain the week prior to the event provided what some riders described as perfect conditions. Mike Witkowski was impressive in the sandy conditions on his 85cc bike during the 2010, but was facing a new challenge on his super mini this year with a new crop of talent. As the green flag was raised, Witkowski shot off into the woods with an impressive hole shot followed by Colton Wilkes, Vince Smith and several others. Zach Dubois, however, struggled to get his bike started and left the line quite a bit behind. At the end of the first lap, Witkowski had an impressive lead with a battle developing behind him. Colton Wilkes and Vince Smith were wheel to wheel with Zach Dubois closing in. By the third lap, Witkowski appeared to have it easily won, assuming he did not make any mistakes. Dubois took over second place with Smith moving into a solid third to set the finishing order. In the 85cc class, Dawson
Mike Witkowski won the SuperMini class.
Dunnuck took the holeshot with Kyle McManus, Blake Ryan and Jake and Tyler Darmon all charging to challenge Dunnuck. Late in the race, Dunnuck suffered a crash which allowed Ryan to close the gap coming in for the white flag. Ryan was able to overtake Dunnuck on the last lap to take the 85cc class win. The 65cc class saw Langdon Feltner take control early on withiut a significant challenge from any other riders. Drew Rainey and Lance Maschino followed behid battling for the second place spot. Late in the race, Rainey stopped for some glove adjustments allowing Maschino to take over second place near the home check. Rainey eventually got back by Maschino and held on behind Feltner. The front row of the big bike race consisted of the AA, Open A and Vet A classes all looking for the clear advantage into the ever so tight woods. At the end of the first field section, it was Tyler Tischler, John Maschino, Brett Dubois and David Dunnuck. Tischler went down in the first turn taking out several bikes, blocking the opening. Maschino and Dunnuck successfully avoided the pile up and darted of into the woods. Tischler recovered quickly and before long, had caught back up to the leaders. All the riders recovered from the chaos and started filtering into their comfortable positions. Late in the first lap, Dunnuck found a pile of firewood on the inside of a turn allowing many riders to pass and pull away. Tischler and Maschino eventually pulled away from the field creating their own impressive race for the overall. After several back and forth lead changes, it came down to the last and final lap. Maschino said he was hoping for some lapped traffic which he hoped would allow an opportunity for the pass. The leader fell 15 seconds short of catching a group of lappers, allowing Tis-
chler to edge out Maschino by 0:03 seconds at the finish. Results:

District 17 Awards Banquet Ottawa, Illinois - January 22 Photos by Brett Wilkinson and Dave Reynolds
I
t seems like a blur. Races start in March, and end in November. Tracks have their awards presentations, play days, and rider appreciation rides. Go through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, another few banquets and the season then officially ends with the District 17 banquet. Just under 600 attendants were at the banquet this year, riders, friends, and family enjoyed the great food and an abundance of door prizes. Some improved awards were one hand, the new pit board style champion plate replaced the older style number plate design, and seemed to be a real hit. Champion plaques were a little larger and the number of double class winners were much larger. Just about 400 famous District 17 jackets were awarded for 2010. 2010 wasn't the most remarkable year, but with all the nice weather early, then the rains came in and made June seem like it's time to round up the animals and start building a boat. Motocross and Stadium motocross racing was pretty steady considering current economic conditions. Some real improvements over 2009 were starting to show at the season's end. Looking forward to 2011, there are many tracks doing changes and updates, some major and some tweaking already great venues. The enthusiasm and effort already happening at the printing of this story should make most all the midwest envious of our clubs and promoters devoted efforts. Riders have a vast choice racing in District 17, from motocross to trials, dirt track to hill climb, hare scrambles, enduro and new 2011 the

newly added GP racing. It should be an exciting season. Gran Prix races will be tried by some of the clubs and tracks wanting to offer a change of pace. Little bit Motocross, with some hare scrambles feel blended should make for a great time with long moto type formats, and shorter overall days. Everyone of the GP races will have its own flavor. Enduro director Ryan Moss has taken on the duties of this racing type as director.
Kim Muzzarelli won the Quad +30 Hare Scrambles championship.
Dirt Track director Stan Camp, “Dirt track had another great year in District 17, and the banquet made for a great opportunity to see everyone in the middle of winter. The banquet let us catch up on plans for the up com-
ing season, as well as re-live the fun from these past events. The banquet went smooth thanks to help of award presentation from Jay and Tammy Hall. I’m looking forward to April and the start of 2011 season.” Dan Loer, D17 Trials Director, “It was another great trials season. It was great to see the trials crowd at the banquet this year, and an honor to hand out awards to our well deserving champs in recognition of their accomplishments. A big congratulations to our 2010 class champions for their success, and to all of the riders for their participation and support. I look forward to seeing even more trials attendance at the banquet next year. As for the season, we had a 16% increase in new riders. We had three new venues host events, each with their own highlights including Sherrard, Apple River and the Peoria Motorcycle Club. Clubs this year included NITRO, Rock River Riders, Variety Riders, Motorsports Park and the Peoria Motorcycle Club. Landowners to be recognized included Donnie Meehan (Elmwood), Kevin Vanderploeg (Sherrard), Gary Lingbeck (Lena) and Joel Fonseca (Apple River). A special thanks to the NITRO crew led by Ralph Littlefield for hosting eight of the ten events. I want to sincerely thank these clubs, landowners, trials masters and all who contributed to the 2010 season. I also want to thank my wife Jennifer for her support. And for 2011, we want to welcome Pearl City as a new venue on our schedule. We have nine classes in trials including youth, women and senior classes. We continue to encourage youth participation to maintain our sustainability. We also have a

Frozen Toe really catching on Coal Valley, IL - January 30 By David Genung Images by Nicole Falk
O
ne would think attendance for an outdoor motorcycle event in the Midwest in January would be sparse. This is not the case for Tri-City Motorcycle Club’s annual Frozen Toe race. The race is always run under the condition of "BAD" weather permitting. The Coal Valley, Illinois motorcycle club enjoys ever increasing numbers of attendees each year, and this year was no exception. There was a record number of participants this year, but the real story was in the pits. The number of spectators for this year’s race was like the club had not seen in years past. The weather was colder than last year, but spectators weren’t too uncomfortable due to a couple bonfires and the heated clubhouse. The event has evolved from a Hare Scramble type event to more of a GP style event. A
course that once only crossed the motocross track now uses almost all of it with only small sections omitted where the transition from track to trail is facilitated. It

Cold doesn’t slow Hatfield action T Hatfield, Wisconsin - January 23
he story of the day was cold... temps that is. The Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association made its annual stop at Lake Arbutus in Hatfield, WI to run on the biggest track of the season. The layout was long, and a tri-corner oval that kept riders on their toes. The track was big enough that the GP part of the event, where a couple left hand turns are mixed in was all laid out inside the oval. Not only did the larger layout throw a twist into the day’s racing, the real challenge came from the extremely cold temperatures, eleven below at practice, and maybe breaking zero as a high for the day. The temps had a huge effect on the racing conditions by creating much more snow dust 250/450 Pro class being led by than usual. Late in the race, Blaire Lindner worked up and finished third, improving on her first moto fifth. In PeeWee B, the racing was as close as it gets in both motos. Ryder Plaskey held the lead early with Dakota Gettinger, Tyler Thompson and Danielle Minsaas filling the top four spots. Into the second lap, Kelsi Gibson joined the lead group on her Polini and Minsaas moved up to second. The top five were essentially only feet apart for the rest of the race, with Chippewa Falls’ Gibson climbing to the front and making the big pass at the flag for the win ahead of Minsaas and Plaskey. In the second moto it was a repeat for Gibson, running in second all the way to the flag, then passing Gettinger at the flag for the win. Minsaas ran in third each lap, just ahead of Dalton Anger and Thompson. Minsaas ended up second overall (2-3) ahead of Gettinger (4-2). In the Open Pro Motorcycle class pure speed was demonstrated in both heat races. The heats were used to set the stage for the final later in the day. In heat one, John Strangfeld put his KX500 into the lead with Luke Fox and Soren LaValley keeping him honest to the end. In the second heat, it was all Brian Frandsen leading Iowa’s Jeff Hawbaker in another close race. get around the track. This round of the CWIRA racing is put on in conjunction with the Hatfield ATV Club. It is a great chance for the club to raise some valuable funds to support their local efforts. Club president Bob Ehlen took a few moments between plowing efforts to fill us in on the club. “We started the club in around 1999, and our main goal for the club at that time was to get the Jackson and Clark County trail systems connected. It took us probably three years of going to town and county board meetings to get it done. We opened up a section of county highway that may have only been a two mile stretch, but it made that connection from one side of the lake to the other. It made it possible for riders to come into town for gas, food and everything. If we wouldn’t have had the club, I don’t think we would have gotten it through. This was back when ATV’ing was just getting more organized, so it was huge. Prior to this last year, the lake was drawn down for dam construction, and if the town wouldn’t have had the atv’s coming in for business, it would have been really bad for everyone. It really made all the difference to have that traffic, and that was possible because of that connection. CYCLE USA, April 2011

This is I think our tenth year doing this event, and we put all the money back into our community trails. Our club has helped open trails all through our township, and signed them all. We do everything we can to support the trails in the area. We also help the local fire departments and EMS as they are the ones responding to situations if there is an accident on the trails.” As the races concluded, many were keeping an ear to radios broadcasting the Packers/ Bears playoff game... just as the
race was a success, so was the game for those green and gold fans. It all made for a great day, despite the cold.

Dustin Hoffman, two or four wheels, he’s good at it.
I
t isn’t common for a rider to excel at both racing both motorcycles, and quads. Twenty-four year old Dustin Hoffman is an exception, “I started on an ATC 70 three wheeler when I was three, then got into bikes and eventually mixed in quads after so many years, and just love them. I like both and they are both fun, and I’ve been doing it every since. In ice racing, I’ve just finished a custom built YZF chassis with a Honda TRX motor for the studded classes, and also do A Rubber, and Outlaw Rubber on the other machine. In studded I run the Pro-Am Oval and GP classes. I’ve been to the nationals quite a few times, and had wins the last two years. I had a get-off in studded last year and wasn’t able to compete. I also have championships in the 36 CYCLE USA, April 2011
CWIRA state series. I’m not doing the nationals this year as they’ve changed the rules and added a new fender rule that I don’t agree with, so I’m passing on going. The local stuff is just as good anyway. The guys are just as fast and there’s always good competition.” Asked about jumping from a rubber to the studded quad... “The rubber classes are a little more on the edge, but both are really fun. I think rubber gives you the advantage of being able to go from last to first in a matter of a single corner, but if you make a mistake it can just as easily go the other way. It is all about hooking up with the right lines. Studded GP is a lot about the driver, where oval is all about set-up.
Jumping back to motorcycles is quite the challenge. I love to do both, and have been jumping back and forth for a long time. When I hop back on the bike in the spring it is a lot dif-
ferent on two wheels.” You’ll see Dustin as a regular in a lot of the northern D16 motocross races during the summer... on two wheels, and being just as competitive.

T
he Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota played host to the last big event of the 2010 motocross race season, our season ending awards banquet. This is always one of the biggest and best events of the year.
Almost four hundred racers and family members made the trek up north to the casino to receive their hard earned awards. As in the past few years, the youth class awards ceremony was held in the afternoon prior to the meal. It was nice to see so many young eager faces waiting to be recognized for their racing successes. Despite the efforts of our less
than understanding government we had awards for racers in twenty two classes. I really hope that we will be able to continue to keep our children coming up through the ranks. After a nice relaxing meal the awarding of the Amateur classes began. With so many in attendance it took a couple of hours to rec-

There was also an abundance of prizes to go with the awards for icing on the cake. Once the awards had all been handed out the post party begins. Holding the ceremony at a casino is really nice since it gives a place to catch up with all our friends and competitors. It is one last chance to enjoy the company of our race community before the long winter sets in. We will be looking to hold next year’s banquet at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino just outside of Red Wing. We will also be combining the youth and amateur awards at the end of 2011. I would like to thank all of the attendees, our loyal sponsors and of course the racers that spent so much time and energy seeking class championships. Of note is Scott Stienle who took home awards in three classes the; +30, +40 and +45. Quite an accomplishment for an over the hill
racer. All those in attendance had a great time at the banquet, as well as at the post party. Talk about tall tales and bench racing wins, what a night. If I remember rightly I even had a few wins by the time the night was over. I am already looking forward to our 2011 season banquet and party. I certainly hope to see all of you there with us this coming December. Kayla Solheid and Shayanna Wilson from the Women’s class.

CYCLE USA, April 2011
Awards Banquet perfect finish to D16 Season Wisconsin Dells, WI - November 13
A
fter the season kicks off some time in April, for many riders interested in a year-end championship run, the summer season can become a blur. A good amount of travel, plenty of racing, and hopefully good times all along the way. Mix that in with all the other things involved in life, and it is a fast, busy season, and for most, they wouldn’t have it any other way. Getting the most out of a Midwest riding season means getting out and riding. Rain, cold, heat, none of it stops the determined racer. Those that pay their dues during the summer have one extra event to look forward to in particular... the annual awards banquet. This isn’t a motocross, dirt track or activity geared towards just one division, it covers all the racers of D16. Everyone comes together for one good celebration. Like last year, the banquet was held at the famous Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells. All the clubs and promoters of the district start coming in as early as Friday for annual meetings. Schedules, and new rules are all worked out, as well as any other business the group has to take care of. By Saturday afternoon these meeting are winding down, and everyone’s attention shifts to the festivities starting up for the evening. Hundreds of awards are unpacked, and organized for the evening, and then with the exception of a few dedicated banquet workers, everyone is ready to have a good time. Those organizers still have work to do, but even for them, it is time to start and enjoy the special time surrounded by friends.
The Kalahari Resort was chosen in large part because of all the other activities that are available to all the families coming to the banquet. Many spend at least one night, and often times the entire weekend at the resort. One of the largest water parks you’ll ever find, bowling, movie theatre, a go-kart track, laser tag, climbing walls and more, all indoors means there is a lot to do in addition to the evening’s banquet. The dinner hall and awards room is beautiful The food is outstanding, and it all just adds to the special night. After everyone makes their way into the hall for dinner... and has been very well fed, the second half of the awards program gets under way. Some of the divisions hand out their awards before dinner, with motocross and dirt track taking place after. There were a bunch of door prizes for riders, and a couple special drawings part way through the evening, where two new Kawasaki pit bikes were given away courtesy of District 16 and Southeast Sales in Milwaukee. Row after row of plaques, and upgraded jackets were handed out. Riders, families and everyone attending enjoyed good conversation, and company. The D16 racing family just works, as we should all having such a stong common interest. When it all concludes, many of the kids are back off to the pools, activity rooms or what-
ever. Many of the adults found their way to the ever popular bar and dance area to let loose, and extend the fun into the early morning hours. These banquet evenings have always been special, and a really good time. For those of us lucky enough to have been around for a while, we still remember these nights from twenty to thirty years ago. They were real parties back then. Now they are more family driven, and while the party aspect of it all still exist, the evenings have changed. Not for the worse, just changed. The banquets are just as good as ever, and plans have already been made to have the evening’s celebration return to the same resort for the next couple years. This is an event that everyone in D16 should look forward to as much as any race. As always, with any event like this there’s a lot of work that needs to get done. Organizing, and planing it all is a big task, and it all happens under the guidance of D16’s Erin Aune. She stepped in to do this several years ago, and continues to lead the effort with her small group of helpers. Thank you Erin and D16 for another great banquet!

March Madness of Motocross North Webster, Indiana - March 19 By Becky Stichter
I
t was the second weekend of the season with Reads Racing Unlimited and Saturday was perfect. With plenty of sun, mild temps, and a track that was in excellent condition, it was a good day for riders to get some seat time. With an ATV national and local qualifier also running this weekend, the number of riders was a little low, but March madness of motocross has struck, and people needed to ride! The first race was a combination of Quad A, B and Youth on the track. In both motos, sole A rider Matt Simmons came out of the gates in the lead and set the pace. For the B riders, Greggory Miller led the pack, followed by Jared Nutt and Christopher Maglio. Miller held the others off in both motos and was able to finish 1-1. Nutt held Maglio off for a good part of the race, but when it mattered, Maglio pushed and passed Nutt, finishing second. In moto two Maglio was able to finish in second again. This moto Nutt and Devinn Smith battled before Smith edged by to finish in third place. The second race was also a combination run of several classes. The 250C riders had the
largest group. In moto one, Kavin Thomas got out of the gates the fastest followed by Jacob Shaw, Clayton Birk and Damon Meek. Thomas' ride was solid and he took the win. Behind him position changes were happening. Zach Conrad was able to get by several riders and moved into second place. Shaw held off the other riders to finish third. In the second moto, Thomas came out with the lead again, ahead of Conrad, Shaw and Meek. After a few laps, Shaw moved into second while Conrad and Meek were left to battle for third. Thomas, who had been leading, had some difficulties and wasn’t able to finish. With Thomas out of the action, Shaw won the moto. After some good battling, Meek was able to move into second place, and Conrad finished third.

Bodie Derrer was the only Jr rider out today, but he's already running faster than he was last season, and looked like he was enjoying his time on the track. Race five also ran several classes together. Dalton Packard, who had several holeshots today, set the pace in the 125cc 2stroke class, winning both motos. Finishing behind him were Brandon Brace and Kolton Lynas. For the +50 riders, Mike Farley swept both motos followed by Charles Nice and Milton Cox. Finishing the action for the day were the 65cc and Pitbike riders. Grant Topping won the 65Sr class and Larry Klinger took the win on his Pitbike. After all the racing action was done for the day, there was an open ride. Several riders took advantage of this and enjoyed their time on the track. Super Sr B Wynn Earlewine, Masters Duane Nienow, Micro Joseph Goth Since the early 70’s the #1 Norsemen names have been engraved on a traveling trophy. As a club, the Norsemen are extremely proud of the participation levels and success of club members. The American Motorcycle Association (AMA) in 1961 originally chartered the Norsemen Motorcycle Club. Original charter members included Milt Larson, Barney Larson, John Robertson, Tom Robertson and six other individuals who foresaw the need for an off-road motorcycle club to promote quality events in Minnesota. Off-road competition saw a tremendous increase in the 1960’s. The development of lightweight motorcycles resulted in heightened enthusiasm for scrambles and enduro riding. In the beginning, event focus was mainly Scrambles in Bradford, MN. Through-
out the 60’s the Norsemen Motorcycle Club hosted several events each year including scrambles, enduro’s, hill climbs, and TT’s. In 1967 the Norsemen took over the Mora Enduro which quickly earned a reputation as being tough, but usually lots of fun due to the miles of virgin or rarely used single-track the Norsemen laid out. 1961 also marked the year the AMA approved rules for a new form of racing called motocross. Borrowed from postwar Europe, the sport was similar to scrambles but different in scoring methods. Over the decade of the 60’s motocross gained in popularity and in 1970, the club purchased their first 40 acres of land in Cambridge, MN. Over the following years, a scrambles and motocross course was built along with the TT track to make the official home of the Norsemen Motorcycle Club. By 1977 an adjoining 80-acre parcel became available and was purchased alCYCLE USA, April 2011

for larger jumps on the moto track. By the early 1990’s, the Norsemen club membership was not growing anywhere near the rate of event participation and it was clear a choice had to be made. Members were spread too thin to put on events in all areas of off-road motorcycle racing so it was decided they would get back to their roots and focus on enduro and hare scrambles events, along with a small group willing to promote TT’s. Over the past decade the Norsemen have grown its membership to its highest levels by focusing on quality members and providing a family environment. The Norsemen realized the future of the sport is with the children, provide great events for kids of all skill levels, and a family environment and they will come. The Norsemen are a very proud family of Most Valuable Norsemen, Tawnia Stukel. members and no rider is ever alone at any event as long as other members are there. Re-energized into the 90’s, the Norsemen were able to bring a National Enduro back to Minnesota in 1997, the Paul Bunyan National Enduro in Akeley, MN. The Paul Bunyan National Enduro was hosted by the Norsemen for two more years in 1998 and 1999. By 2007 the Norsemen were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Mora Enduro amongst big fan fare and a pig roast. 1997 also marked the dedicaThe Agitator is the second oldest award tion of the Martineau we have. lowing for hare scrambles events to be held. Events were popular and attendance was good in the 70’s and by the early 1980’s the Norsemen were able to make upgrades to the property including the large culverts allowing spectators to safely spectate from the middle of the track and allowing

After the awards, Nate gave a speech of appreciation for the support of his parents and the people who have helped him along the way. A nice touch, indeed. A short film about the Off Road motorcycle experience in Minnesota, titled Endless Sunday, was shown just before the awards were given out. During this film, various D-23 riders and their supporters eloquently told the story of Enduro and Hare Scrambles. It showcased the truly family-centered, wholesome nature of our sport. The nicest thing about the banquet is that it falls smack-dab in the middle of winter. Bach survives for the win Quincy, Indiana - March 19 By David Dunnuck
T
he opening round of the 2011 District 15 Harescrambles Series also served as the opening round of the Mid America XC series, which joined forces with District 15 in 2010, and was held on Saturday March 19th near Quincy. Two weeks prior to the event, the property was reported to be under water, but the sandy soil allowed for adequate drainage. Chat forums and facebook reports all indicated that the track would be ready for the race. Unfortunately for the promoters and property owner, the immediate area of the track was absolutely pounded with heavy rain the night before the race. With plenty of parking available and a large John Deere tractor for towing, big rig after big rig was hauled in and placed into a parking spot for the race. The PeeWee racers were allocated to a grassy field section on high ground. This eliminated any real technical challenges, but provided the kids with an opportunity to open up their little 50cc motors to see just how fast they would go. Ethan Sowder took the 50cc Pre-mix victory with 28 laps and Brody Smith landed the win in the 50cc Injector class The Mini riders were the first group to hit the main track which started in a very soggy bean field leading into the woods. Shortly into the woods was the first of many obstacles. A very steep ravine which proved not too difficult for the front runners, but completely log jammed the 65cc class. Jaden Smith took the holeshot in the Super Mini class, but was quickly passed by Austin Lee prior to hitting the wooded sections. Lee and Mike Witkowski were the first two riders to make it a complete lap with Colton Wilkes coming through about a minute later. The scoring team and parents realized how tough it must be when the Super Mini leaders came through on their second lap before the first 85cc rider emerged. While Lee and Witkowski were clearly out in front, a good battle for 3rd through 6th developed with Wilkes, Smith, Dubois and Vince Smith all swapping positions. In the end, Wilkes edged out the group for third with Lee beating Witkowski by 0:07 for the overall win. The 85cc class was led through the first lap by Eric Douglass followed shortly after by Jacob Pyne, Tate Guerretaz and Dawson Dunnuck. Pyne eventually took the lead from Douglass and Dunnuck worked his way past Guerretaz for the third place spot. The 65cc class faced many challenges as did the track crew. The conditions in the woods required significant and rapid course rerouting to allow passage of the little bikes. In the end, Drew Rainy took the win with two laps followed by Tanner Guerrettaz and Casey Moore. With the success of last year’s 4 race series

and the opportunity for new property, the Big Bike field was filled with over 180 bikes. The AA and Open A lines were packed with riders all looking to claim the year’s first overall victory. In addition, the newly included C classes were full of new riders wanting to experience racing. In the AA class, Daniel Sims was the first bike to the corner followed by a tremendous roar of motors plowing their way through the deep mud. As the following rows of riders hit the woods, they were faced with a similar situation that the mini riders encountered. Riders were everywhere looking for a way around the deep ravine and clouds of overheating bikes. Once again, the track crew was frantically looking for rerouting options that could accommodate the faster riders that were returning for their second lap while being fair to those already stuck. This type of responsive action by the track crew remained throughout the entire race at multiple spots throughout the course. At some points in the race, there were as many as 8 bikes buried in the ravines with countless riders and spectators trying to clear the route. Some riders eventually faced

penalties due to the frequent course rerouting and the inevitable help from spectators trying to point out alternative routes and lines through the property. In the end, it all shook out with Chris Bach being awarded the victory followed by Adam Bonneur and Chris Douglas. Results were not available at print time.
