The track is the same, the grandstands are larger, and the regional racers are getting ready to start the season off big with the Elkhorn 1/2 mile on Sunday May 6th. The Limestone surface stays loose with a slight cushion toward the outer edge. Come see how the amateurs find the fast way around, while the Pros show the fastest line to master the course. There will be nine classes, some modern, some vintage, and a $2,000 AMA Open Pro purse. See the advertisement in this issue for more details. Promoted by DVR Enterprises. District 15 News, From Lori Locklin, D15’s Vice President. I would first like to start out by introducing myself. My name is Lori Locklin and I am the Vice President of Indiana District 15 for the 2012 Season. This is the first time we have had a new President and Vice President of District 15 in roughly 10 years. Nick Jones, President, and myself are very excited and optimistic about the future of District 15 and all of its competition Divisions here in Indiana. There are some really great racing facilities in Indiana, and we hope to have the chance to show just how great racing in Indiana can be! There are some really big changes going on here in District 15. Our website has been re-done and currently offers much more information than in the past. Nick Jones and Anna Cooper have done an excellent job getting the website into a real source of information for riders. The District 15 Membership cards have been going out in record time! Riders were able to pick up cards directly from the banquet this year! Nick and I are trying to bring a new energy to In-

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... diana racing and we hope you will all give it a chance! I would like to also take a brief moment and discuss the importance of AMA and the District Structure. Many times I have heard the question “What does AMA do for me?” The answer to this question is so simple and obvious that most times it is overlooked. Rights, Riding, Racing. Without the AMA none of these things will be possible in the future. What do you like about Racing? I like seeing two riders battle for an entire moto and then pull off of the track and give each other high five’s and yell good race on their way to the pits. I enjoy how the families who come to the track get to know each, and keep in touch for years after their racing careers have come to an end. When a rider is injured and a group of riders come together and load the truck/trailer/RV without anyone having to ask, it makes me proud to part of such a great group of people. A group of people who are brought together by one common interest, Motorcycling. The problem we face in the future is for every person in this group who loves motorsports and all that entails, there are many more who oppose it. There are a large groups of people who oppose your right to ride. On your own land, at the track, anywhere. It is noisy. It is dangerous. Not everyone sees what we see. As an individual standing alone I have no power over legislation that would seek to ban motorcycling in any or all forms. For every person who stands beside me our voices grow louder. The louder we are the more we will be heard. The AMA makes us loud. They give you a voice. They make it easy to stand together. While you are at the track, they fight for you on the state and national level. Whatever it is you love about racing, that is what the AMA is fighting to protect. That is what the AMA does for you. Additionally, there have been achievements in

the National Advancement system that is unprecedented. No other organization collects data at a national level to create a fair level of competition classification. If you go racing and you’re a B rider, but there is a guy in your class that you know is an A rider, you can look it up right on your smart phone! At the track. You can take it to the referee and say look, this guy is an A rider. If you have been in motorsports very long you understand how huge that is. The thing is, it doesn’t work if the AMA isn’t around to do this. The AMA provides the best guarantee out there of a fair competition event, with a common set of rules. A common set of rules and classes is very important. Without a common class structure, you may purchase a machine that you can ride at only one facility. You may modify your machine on the advice of a promoter only to find every other track in your area does not allow this modification. By having one rule book, and a common set of classes you the rider are at a much greater advantage when it comes to racing. This is where the District Structure comes in. The District helps local tracks come together to run a common set of classes and create a points series for riders in their home states. So I leave you with one final thought. “They paved paradise and put up a parkin' lot. Doesn’t it always seem to go, that you don't know what you got till it's gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” “They took all the trees, and put em in a tree museum, and they charged the people a dollar and a half to see them. Doesn’t it always seem to go, that you don't know what you got till it's gone. They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot.” This song points out something very simple. Protect what you have. If Motorcycling is your Paradise, you have to support the organizations that keep it from ending up in a museum. If you care about riding today or tomorrow, or next week, or maybe till the end of the season, you don’t need an AMA Membership. If you care about riding next year, in five or in ten years. If you care about seeing your child, or even your grandchild ride, you need your voice to be heard. Your voice as a motorcyclist is heard through the AMA, and the more members there are the louder our voice. For every member who decides not to renew their membership, our voice gets smaller. If no one is fighting for us, you will see your right to ride disappear as quickly as you made up your mind not to support the one organization that fights for the rights of all motorcyclists. Good Luck to everyone in 2012! Ride Safe and remember always have FUN! Free, Youth off-road riding class returns. The Woods Rider development (WRD) has announced the 2012 version of the class is coming May 5th at the popular Dyracuse Park in Wisconsin Rapids, WI! This is a free class, aimed at riders 16 and

younger to help hone their abilities riding motorcycles offroad. The only cost is park entry ($10). Advance registration is requested, and class size is limited so get your spot reserved today! Signup form and more information available at pgoffroadracing.com. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman This has been a very busy spring for the board members of D 23. Many preseason activities happening that required time and effort from board members. I would like to acknowledge Dave Wessling for all the time and work he put into organizing the District booth at the International Motorcycle Show. We garnered a good number of new members due to his efforts. Many more riders and families are now aware of our organization and all that we offer. Thanks to all of our members that spent time at the booth promoting our sport. Mark and Leslie Vanderwerf headed up our booth at the Target Center Arenacross race in February and again this was a big success. Thanks to them for giving up the evening to promote racing at this sold out event. Visibility is the key to growth for us and the efforts of the people mentioned have reached many potential new members and riders that previously did not know about organized riding in the state. Tom and Karen Umphress have been very busy on the government relations side of things, keeping an eagle eye on the legislature to insure we do not lose any ground. A bill has been passed with their help that will allow us to get our dirt bikes licensed, and made legal for dual sport riding provided the owner equips it to meet the law. Other legislation being worked on involves state required insurance limits for off-road events. Hopefully this will get passed this year. Other district business matters include a change in the time frame requirement for the annual awards banquet. It no longer has to be held in the same calendar year as the racing season. The importance of this is that do not have to fight the Christmas time rush and prices for a venue to hold the banquet. It will be moved into the following January. The 2012 season awards banquet will again be held at Treasure Island Casino outside of Red Wing MN. It will be a much improved event this next time. Our event scheduled is finalized with the exception of an all new event we are planning on hosting this year. We are looking to host a Road Ride to raise money for the legislative efforts on behalf of all riders. We know there are lot of members that own and ride road bikes so be looking for the date of this inaugural event. We have several members that have been competing at the winter nationals in the southern states. Congratulations to those racers and many have done well. I would be remiss not to

mention the inspired ride by Ryan Dungey at St. Louis with a broken collar bone. What an unbelievable ride for him. That is about all for now. By the time you read this the racing season will have begun, we wish all of you the best of luck for the 2012 season. I hope to see you on the tracks, trails and highways of Minnesota this season. With the early spring I have already logged many road miles and seen many other out there already. Take advantage of the weather and get a head start on the season. Mike Registration is now open for the Road America Motorcycle School. Riding a motorcycle or a scooter is an exhilarating experience but it also requires training and knowledge and takes more physical skill and mental concentration than driving a typical motor vehicle. The Road America Motorcycle School is one of Wisconsin’s premier cycletraining facilities, educating two-wheel enthusiasts in a variety of courses. Endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), Road America’s Basic Rider Courses, Clinics and Dirt Bike School are taught by award-winning rider coaches who have completed extensive training through the MSF and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Successful completion of the school's basic rider course enables participants to obtain a Class M endorsement on their driver's license. The Basic Rider Course (BRC) consists of 16 hours of combined classroom and practical riding instruction. Participants in this course learn basic riding techniques on motorcycles and scooters supplied by Road America, along with important safety skills to minimize the risks of motorcycling. The course fee is $250. The Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2) is for both veteran riders and those looking to sharpen and build on the skills learned in the BRC. It consists of one hour of classroom and five hours of practical instruction and riders must use their own motorcycles. The BRC2 course fee is $125. Road America provides the instruction for both courses in its controlled, off-street environment. For the experienced enthusiast, Road America offers a Level 1 Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic, developed by race champion, Lee Parks. This one day clinic will make a specific, measurable improvement in an individual's skills regarding throttle control, throttle/brake transitions, corner entry, line selection, body position and corner exit. Dynamic classroom sections cover the mental aspects of the techniques with the majority of the time applying and practicing these unique techniques during the range exercises. Road America also offers Supermoto (Demo & Basic). These courses are taught on a purposebuilt 1-mile paved and dirt track with multiple configurations and elevation changes. Registration is now open and a current schedule of courses is available online at roadamerica.com or by calling Road America, 800-365-7223. CYCLE USA, April 2012

ProAm class through turn one. Ian Malinowski was running second through the first couple laps with a lot of pressure from the always quick Adam Bushman. Going into the third lap Bushman found a good line and cut under Malinowski for second to set the final order. The second moto was more of the same. Finishing fourth was Ken Even with Mark Schmidt close behind in both motos. The Open Am GP class had Corey Schroeder out front both motos ahead of Jeff

everal years ago, faced with the prospect of raising entry fees to cover costs of the yearly CWIRA Series it was decided that one event each year would be promoted by the Association. This is the race that pays a large portion of the cost involved with the CWIRA Points Series, and the yearly awards. Track and other event workers are the members of the Association, helping to bring ice racing to the success it has enjoyed over the years. This race has become one of the most popular of the year for spectators, and as the CWIRA Mid-Season Championship - the most challenging for racers as well! Lake Arbutis is a regular stop during the season for CWIRA racers, and is often one of the more popular as there is a large parking area on dry land if needed, and plenty of room to build a nice big course for both the oval, and GP tracks. This year came with perfect spectating temps, and plenty of fast racing. The day’s racing kicked off with the GP classes, and with little surprise John Strangfeld led the Open Mason Barth finished second overall in the Junior Motorcycle class. 8

Stewart and Marshfield, WI’s Hayden Henry. Dj Schultz pulled off the overall in Quad GP. Brandon Huffman took the win in the opening moto while Schultz crossed in second ahead of Graham Eichmiller and Shaun Winkler. In the second moto Schultz turned the tables, taking the win ahead of Hoffman that was also good for the overall. Due to some schedule shuffling, this event was also part of the three event winter Triple Crown Series, bringing some extra payout and prestige to some of the Pro classes. That also pulled in a few extra fast racers, and today’s Open Pro class had a dozen fast guys work through two qualifiers for the main event. In the first heat, John Strangfeld jumped to the lead and held it for the opening lap before Jesse Janisch slid under to take the win. Soren LaValley and Jamie Hanson were next across the finish line. In the second heat, the racing was even faster as Adam Bushman took the win, setting a very fast average lap ahead of Brock Schwarzenbacher, Russell Bradley and Ian Malinowski. Strangfeld proved his reaction skills by grabbing the holeshot in the Final of the Pro class as well. On him right away, and then passing into the

lead during the second lap was the unstoppable Janisch. Over the next four laps, Bushman and Schwarzenbacher also moved up past Strangfeld to set the final running order ahead of Bradley. Janisch stayed just far enough ahead of Bushman to take the impressive win. The Open Pro Quad (studded) class was exciting as the first heat saw Mike Mueller pull off the win just ahead of Graham Eichmiller and Adam Smedbron. The second heat had Dj Schultz barely holding off Brandon Huffman at the finish as Dustin Hoffman was only a quad length back. The ten rider final was an impressive show for sure as these guys were simply ripping around the large oval. Brandon Huffman beat Schultz into the first turn off the start, and from there the two ran tight to the finish line, even squeaking out a small margin over the close battle for third. Dustin Hoffman had Eichmiller doing everything he could to get by, and it almost worked a couple times before the checkered flag ended the battle. Mueller ran close in fifth the entire way. Mitchel Rush worked hard for the Open B motorcycle class win. In the first moto Corey Schroeder was out front, and Rush was powering into every corner to make a move into the lead. The two were never more than a bike length apart as Rush dove in harder, but Schroeder would hold on coming out of each turn. On the last lap Rush went wide into turn one and managed to sling-shot his way under for the pass coming out of the turn two for the win. In the second moto the two were just as close, with Rush leading most of the race as Alec Muth again followed the lead battle in third. The Outlaw Pro Rubber class ran two heats to set the stage for a big final event. Louis Plaskey won the first heat as Nick Nett and Scott Lindner fought over second right to the finish. In the second heat, Dan Lindner held a little margin all the way as Jeremy Flees had his hands full with a non-stop push from Mitchell Williams. The Main was fast, and not settled until the final lap as usual in this class. These days

#43 Dustin Hoffman and Graham Eichmiller kept it close all day in the Open Pro Quad class.

of ice racing include a lot of great action in many classes, but none can beat out the close racing that comes in the top non-studded classes. Scott Lindner grabbed the early lead, running wide and fast as Plaskey was using every other part of the track, looking for that little extra traction to slip by. Two laps in it worked, and then the rolls reversed. Plaskey was running wide as Lindner went looking for a way back past. Dan Lindner joined the fight ahead of Flees, and they finished in that order, but you had no idea what the final positions were going to be until the very end. Anything can happen, and usually does in this class. Cody Funk owned the Junior Motorcycle class as he swept his way through both motos for the overall ahead of a talented group. Mason Barth rode well and finished second as Noah Baehnman won a long battle in both motos over Megan Funk.

Adam Bushman won both motos of the 250/450 Pro motorcycle class ahead of Brock Schwarzenbacher and Soren LaValley in the nine rider class. Jamie Hanson went 4-5 for fourth overall ahead of Ken Even’s 6-4 finishes. It was another great day of ice racing in Central Wisconsin. As temperamental as the ice conditions have been all season, the series kept adjusting locations, and making events happen, much to the delite of racers, and all the family and spectators that come watch the

Awesome D15 Motocross Opener Rochester, Indiana - March 10 by Becky Stichter

F

or the 150 plus entrants that came to race this weekend, they couldn't have asked for a better season opener. Reads Racing Unlimited held their season opener at D&D. The mild temps, sun, and dry track were perfect on Saturday and Sunday. For Saturday, the big quads were the first to hit the track. Greggory Miller took the overall win in the Quad A class, running 1-1. Eric Lapato and Brad Kopsho had good runs, but weren't able to get past Miller. Ethan Rutherford took the overall win in Quad B, finishing 1-2. Garrett Miller’s first moto wasn't as good as he wanted it to be, but he got in his grove in the second moto and was able to take the win that time. Miller, running 5-1, finished second overall. The 250C class was the largest of the day with twentyseven riders on the gate. In the first moto, Jacob White, Jacob Bansen and Steven Hill battled it out for first overall. White, mounted on a Yamaha, pulled ahead and took the win. In moto two, these three riders were at it again. This time Hill stepped it up, got around everyone, and took the win, earning the overall with his outstanding 3-1 performance. AJ Wrobel, mounted on a KTM, rode to a two moto sweep

in the 65cc (7-9) class. Kaden Polito and Andrew Tobias had a good battle for second, with Polito getting the nod, and taking second overall. In the +50 class, Mike Farley rode solid, finishing 1-1. Charles Nice, Tim Graves and Kevin Vanarsdale had good runs, battling for second. In the first moto, Graves was able to finish next in line behind Farley. Then in the second moto, Nice stepped it up, and crossed the checkered line in second, good enough for second overall as well. Jon Darmon, running 2-2, took the overall win in the +40 class, proving consistency can be everything. Brad Kopsho took second overall (1-3) with Todd White finishing third overall after his 5-1 set of motos. One mistake, or bad corner could be costly. Megan Moan took the overall win in the Women’s 12 and up class, finishing 1-2. Moan was able to hold off Anglique Reese in the first moto, but Reese got ahead of Moan and Madison Johnson in the second moto. Good job girls. Steve Yeager and Benjamin Richards of the Open B class put on a good show. Yeager pulled ahead of all the riders and crossed the checkered line first in moto one. Then in the second moto, Richards answered back, and pulled to the lead, taking the win. Behind the top two, Greg

Coda, Josh Stalker and Anthony Mann battled for third overall. Jake Rice took charge in the Supermini class, running 1-1 as Garrett Snodgrass in second both motos. Behind them it was anyones race, with several problems and DNFs mixing up the overall. Shadd Miser finished 7-3, and that was good enough to pull out an unusual third overall. Nicholas Craig led the group in the Schoolboy 2 class, finishing 1-1. Dalton Packard, now riding on a Suzuki, finished 2-2, ahead of Kody Elder in both motos. In the 85cc (12-15) class, there were several position changes going on during the

motos. Joshua Taylor won the first moto followed by Isaiah Shelton and Tyler Geisinger. In moto two, Taylor went down in a corner while leading. He wasn't able to get his machine running again and was a DNF. Shelton was also a DNF the second moto. Christian Gallagher and Chris Fouts took advantage of this, with Gallagher finishing first in moto two. Gallagher, finishing 61, took the overall win ahead of Fouts who went 5-2 for second overall. In the 250B class, Nate Stedman rode strong, finishing 11. Nicholas Craig, also riding well went 2-2 ahead of Dalton Packard.

Jake Rice was out on the track again for the 125cc 2-stroke class, and pulled out another two moto victory. Elijah Labordus, Mark Gawal, and Jarred Bischoff had a good run behind the leader. Gawal took the second place in moto one, but then fell back in the second moto, finishing 2-5. Labordus, running 4-2, took second overall. Last on the track was the Mini Quad Jr class. District 23 Annual Banquet Welch, Minnesota - December 4 By Mike Quinn

T

he District 23 Annual Awards Banquet was held December 4th prior to the new year. This year’s combined awards ceremony included Motocross, Hillclimb and Dirt track all being held on the same date and same venue. Due the large number of awards, once the meal was over each discipline has its own hall for the awards presentations. Treasure Island Resort and Casino is a great place for this annual affair as it offers a host of activities for the kids and adults alike. Everything from bowling to the live bands and a large casino. It makes for a great weekend getaway. Once again the awards were created by Dave Ingalls and his team at 4MX graphics. Each of the racers that qualified was awarded a number plate that corresponded to their finish position. Our series sponsors ponied up a large supply of goodies to go with the awards which is always a nice way to cap off a successful season. On the motocross side of things plaques were awarded in over 40 classes including both bikes and quads. This took until 900 PM leaving the rest of the night for enjoying the facilities. It was nice to see so many people in a non-racing setting, and be able to talk with them with out any worries about what is happening on the track. There are some changes coming up for next year’s ceremony. The D23 board has given the ok to move the date into the following year. This will avoid fighting the Christmas party rush that has plagued us for the past several years. More to follow on this later. Our premier class winners this year were Cory Beach in 250A and Gavin Kadlec in Open A motocross. In Quad motocross

There’s not enough space to mention all the award winners. But on behalf of the Board of D23, I would like to congratulate and thank all of the award winners and attendees at this presentation. It was again an honor and a blast to host this event. I hope to see all you again this season and at seasons end for another awards gathering.

2011 Reads Racing Banquet Akron, Indiana - February 11 By Lori Locklin

E

very year Reads Racing hosts a banquet for its racers. Everyone is invited, everyone is welcome. Best of all there is no charge to attend. Doors opened at 4pm and the attendees began pouring in! The tables were filled with stickers for anyone to take. The stage was filled with just over 300 awards! Everyone who came in was entered into a Free Door Prize Drawing! Over 200 prizes were handed out! Prizes were donated by Maximum Power Sports, Lake City Racing, New Holland, Caterpillar Power Equipment, Brad Moan and Day Hardware, Webb’s Family Pharmacy, South Side Video, Akron Country Kitchen, Viking Foods, and South Side Video all out of Akron, IN. Reads Racing provided a buffet style meal. Many riders also brought in dishes and deserts of their own to add to the buffet, which was very appreciated by everyone! After dinner had been served the awards began. First up were the awards for the first annual Midwest Amateur ATV Championship Series. Riders received beautiful overall trophies. Congratulations to the champions! Quad A- Eric Lapato, Quad B- Christopher Maglio, Mini- Logan Stanfield, Mini Jr.Joshua Graham, and Yth Prod- Drew Scott. This year Reads Racing allowed riders to vote for their favorites in categories like Sportsmanship, Most Determined, Most Improved and Hard Luck. In the category for Most Determined, the riders with the most votes were Emma Denney and Dalton Edmondson. Emma was nominated for the award for her strong showing of determination at the end of the 2011 season. Dalton was nominated for his

Both of these guys were great sports, always representing amateur racing with integrity. They were always fun to be around, and set a great example for other riders. The awards for Most Improved went to Addie Clouse and Devin Hudnut. Addie and

Devin were both new to racing in 2011. At first it was a struggle to make it around the track for these riders, but by the end of the season, they had become serious competitors! The Hard Luck Award is given to a rider who had a rough season. Sometimes this rider spent more time off of the bike than on it. He always stayed positive and had a never give up attitude, which is why the Hard Luck award went to Levi Johnson. Each year Reads Racing likes to give some fun awards. Carol Klinger said, “we like to let families know we notice the little things they do for their kids, and to help others around them.” This year the James family won the award of Best Cheerleaders. These parents were out there with positive encouragement cheering on their son no matter what the situation. Stephen Hudnut won an award for Most Laps around the track on foot. Stephen’s son was a beginner 50 rider and he traveled on foot right beside his little guy throughout the season!

The dirt at H2 is black soil, very much in contrast to the hard packed clay of H1, the main motocross track at Hangtime. The opening of H2 also inspired a new weekend entitled “Moto event Showdown”. During this weekend riders will compete on H1, H2, and for the only time in 2012 riders will have a chance to run the Mega Moto Layout, where H1 and H2 will hook together to form 1 monster track!! A new event in 2012 will be the Indiana Amateur Iron Man Motocross Championship. This event is limited in classes and will have fifteen minute motos. It will take place in the loamy sand of D&D Motorsports. Reads Racing will also be host to two of the three rounds of the Indiana State Championship. It was a great evening. Great awards, free food, prizes, and time with good friends. The awards banquet is always a fun evening, and a great way to say thank you to riders for a great season!

Lewis opens Daytona with win Daytona Beach, FL. - March 15/16 By Tim McBride

C

oatesville, PN’s Johnny Lewis, piloted his Honda CRF 450R to a commanding victory during 25 lap Expert class main event during the opening round of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship. The Flat Track Series doubleheader held at the Daytona Flat Track is located on the outskirts of turns one and two of the coveted Daytona International Speedway and brings the best in the business as racers from around the country converged on the World Center of Racing. An emotional Lewis dedicated his first ever GNC win to his former factory KTM mechanic and friend, Mark “Tex” Adams. “I miss my buddy Mark, but I’m grateful to have him watching over me right now. I know he would have been proud of my first win,” he explained while standing proudly atop the podium after the race. Finishing a solid second place was Matt Weidman also on a Honda, surprised the field by holding off race favorite and previous event winner Sammy Halbert. Kenny Coolbeth Jr. from Morris, CT finished fourth ahead of the 2011 Rookie of the year Brad Baker. The Daytona Flat Track also played host to the first two rounds of the AMA Pro Singles racing series. South Dakota’s Gerit Callies aboard his KTM 450 SX-F brought home the first place gold via a wire to wire win. Kentucky’s Hayden Gillim and California’s Alex Wood, both on Kawasaki KX 450F’s finished second and third respectively. The second round of the Grand National Series provided plenty of excitement as well as some fireworks. After the smoke cleared, Grand National #20, emerged the winner. The first 24 laps of the 25 lap GNC main event saw Michigan’s Jared Mees out front on

his Honda with last night’s event winner Johnny Lewis in hot pursuit. But on the last lap Lewis made a daring pass to the inside of Mees as they exited turn two, as they approached turn three Mees attempted a re-pass, they made contact and Lewis crashed. While Mees struggled to maintain control of his machine, Weidman - who was in the third place cat-bird seat throughout - slid past Mees and raced to his first ever Grand National victory of his carrier. “I hate to win like this,” said an excited Weidman afterward. “But I’ve worked a long time for it, and I’ll take it! I saw Johnny get inside of Jared, but I knew the fireworks were not over.” Mees recovered to finish second and Brad Baker who came all the way from Washington was awarded the third and final spot on the podium. Lewis got up quickly and ended up finishing in the eighth position, but the fireworks were just beginning. An obviously angered Lewis charged around the track and when he caught up to Mees on the cool down lap he expressed his displeasure with a slap to the back of Mees’s helmet. Mees was penalized by the AMA for rough riding and had the choice of either giving up his race winnings or Championship points. Mees wisely chose the former. Nonetheless it placed a lot of strain on a long time friendship with Lewis that goes back to when they were kids. “I hate it this happened,” explained an apologetic Mees afterward. “I was chasing Johnny into three and he really put the brakes on trying to be defensive. I would have done the same thing, but I hit him and it cost us both.” The sixteen lap Pro Singles main event saw teenager Ryan Wells turn in a dominating performance. He cruised to victory with a

You really feel like you are attending a special event after this part of the show. Later in the evening, after the introductions are complete, and both the Lites, and Arenacross classes have had their first motos, the kids Arenacross takes center stage. This moto is filled with potential future stars of the sport, who like the big bikes, had to qualify for the evening event, and a chance to make the podium. These early races have two effects on the evening, first it warms up the crowd for some intense racing in the big bike motos, while also giving everyone a true scale to the size of the jumps and other obstacles on the track. Like the other Arenacross classes, the top three riders in both 65cc and 85cc classes get face time on the podium with the Monster energy girls, as well as a chance to announce their sponsors. It was an absolute heart warming moment to hear the crowd explode when one 65cc rider thanked his parents and grandmother for being the sponsor. Motocross for most of us, is definitely a family supported sport, and it was amazing to hear thousands of others expressing their agreement with that. Like in Supercross, the main goal for the night is to qualify for the main event, or second moto. This main event race is only granted to the top riders in either lites, or Arenacross classes. With many talented riders unfortunately not having qualified for the main event, the mood in the pits continues to have high and low moments depending on how well people do. From the drop of the gate in Lites main moto, you could tell many riders were seeing themselves as being first to cross the finish line. But as they say, in racing, things don't always go as planned. becoming somewhat of a truth after an impressive holeshot by Kevin Markwardt, followed by Michael McDade, and Kevin Johnson. The Lites West, series point leader, Chad Cook was sitting in fifth place, and had a lot of traffic to contend with right away. Just before I lost track of everyone outside of the top five, it was quite apparent that another key battle was starting to develop just behind them. This battle was an ultra tight group consisting of Kyle White, Tanner Moore, Max Malatia and John Dehn rounding out the top eight. Cook made his way past the two KTM riders McDade and Johnson, and into second, setting his targets for Markwardt. Things didn't stay tidy much longer. After a failed attempt at a block pass after the finish double, Cook again saw an opportunity to pass Markwardt after a hard charge in the whoops resulting in contact, causing Markwardt to go down in the following corner. It was hard to tell if the contact was deliberate or accidental, however this action caused Markwardt to drop to tenth place. Points leader Cook was now leading for the first time, with Team Faith's Kevin Johnson in second ahead of McDade. This order didn't last much more than a few laps. Just when the field started to make sense, Cook disappeared from his lead spot, having been replaced with Johnson. Cook was now riding about four seconds behind

McDade, but still far ahead of fourth place Scott Zont. Some spectators insisted that he just let the two simply pass him by before giving chase again. This turned out to be a well deserved win for Johnson, who announced earlier in the day, that this may be his final year in Arenacross as a team rider. With the trophies dished out and the championship decided for the Lites class, it was now time for the Arenacross main event. Expectations were high for this race, even with Bowers essentially clenching the championship by qualifying. The pressure was now on him to get a win to end the season on a high. Unfortunately for Bowers, an other rider had big plans. Zach Ames put forward an impressive holeshot against the pack and was doing his best to lay down serious lap times to sweeten the deal. Chad Johnson, having had a great 2012 season, was holding third place in both championship points and

placement for this final moto of the season. Johnson himself had won two events this season. Gibson's hopes of snatching first place in the championship were dashed when Bowers successfully transferred to the main event during the earlier heat races. While I doubt Gibson wanted anything bad to have happened to his main competition, he definitely did not want to be off the podium for the final race of 2012. His riding was sound, however he wasn't able to get around

Zach Ames has an expression that tells the story as he took home his first Arenacross win here in Minneapolis.

Sewell and Johnson to secure that podium position. Gibson finish sixth overall in Minneapolis and 2nd in championship points. With time running down, and only a few laps to go, this would be the visual all the way up to the end of this moto. Ames put up quite the fight, preventing Bowers any opportunity to take him out. With a little help of continual lapped traffic and some impressive cornering, Ames had officially won his first ever Arenacross class race, and was one of few people able to beat Bowers at the top of his game. I have to say, for my first ever Arenacross, I came away feeling like it was an amazing and totally worthwhile experience. These events may not have the huge draw of the Supercross series, but I can honestly say I like the more family oriented atmosphere, the relaxed feel it has for both workers involved with the event, and the riders themselves. It felt more like home than I ever expected it to. Record crowd at St. Louis SX St.Louis, Missouri - March 3 By James Pinckard Photos by Frank Hoppen

A

record breaking crowd of 59,742 fans of AMA Monster Energy Supercross filled the Edward Jones Dome. It’s great to see that every year the sport just keeps growing! Do the names Hussey, Glick, and Gulley mean anything to you? They are names of a few of the local riders who tried to make the program in Supercross at St Louis. The local media did a great job interviewing many local riders as well as the top pros. The Supercross also gave attention and thanks to local riders from the past and on this night Jay Clark and Randy Shackel, very early Yamaha support riders were honored and given a plaque by former world champion Brad Lackey. This event was also round three of the east coast lights Championship. In the Lights

Justin Brayton is turning in an impressive season, finishing third tonight, shown here passing Davi Millsaps.

Minnesota’s Ryan Dungey’s SX season may be over too early, but he turned in some great rides, finishing second in St Louis.

class the fastest rider on time going into the main event was Geico Honda rider Justin Bogle. With Justin Barcia winning every race coming into this evening, everyone knew he was in a great position to continue that trend. When the gate dropped for the main Barcia wasted little time as he crossed the stripe first taking the holeshot award. Barcia set a blistering pace showing why he is the defending East Coast Lights Champion. With Barcia out front KTM rider Ken Roczen was in second with strong riding Bogle charging hard in third. As the race was coming to an end Barcia was way out front, but the race between Roczen and Bogle was heating up and with the crowd on their feet going into the last lap the race was on! Bogle made his move on a little double and went down! He remounted and went down again! Out front Barcia took the win with Roczen second. Taking advantage of the fall was Suzuki rider Blake Whorton. The Supercross class has been odd all year with some of

the top riders out hurt. When the gate dropped it was Yamaha rider Davi Millsaps taking the holeshot but Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto made a quick move around Millsaps and set a pace unmatched. Villopoto has had very bad luck in St Louis, but it looked like his luck may change. Millsaps rode well, but on lap eight Justin Brayton moved past for second. Villopoto laid down some great lap times and Brayton was starting to feel the heat from Ryan Dungy who moved past on lap thirteen and set his sights on Villopoto. With the crowd yelling and cheering he cut time off the gap lap after lap. Dungey ran out of time and finished second. Results: Lights: 1.Justin Barcia 2.Ken Roczen 3. Wallace Lake benefit race a winner

Start of the Two hour with #33 JR Schnabel leading into turn one.

West Bend, Wisconsin - February 12 By Gordon Lunde

T

he 2012 version of the Wallace Lake two hour ice race held its reputation as a great event for riders, and the local communities. Great weather welcomed the riders to this quiet little lake for an event that raises funds for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Washington County. In fact, today’s event raised $4,000 for the charity. Sponsored and promoted by Moto Ice LLC, Western Snow Plows and Pier 144, this race has become an annual favorite among the local ice racers. The quiet soon changed to the sound of 55 motorcycle engines straining to be the leader in this non-trophied, just for the kids event. Though the race is scored, it is more about bragging rights than any trophy or awards. Fun for all and.... fun for all! AMA National flat track rider # 33, JR Schnabel, got the jump on the field at the start and led through turn one. At the end of lap one, Zak Rosine was out front but not for long. This pair swapped the lead several times during the first half hour, with Schnabel crossing the line first after thirty minutes. Just past the thirty minute mark Schnabel and Rosine came upon a snow plow in turn

#00 Brady Lange, and Jim Schmelling in the kids race. They were close the entire race.

three. As Schnabel went to pass on the outside, he rode straight into the path of the snow being pushed out and fell. Rosine got by and took over the lead. Schnabel lost just seconds, and one lap later he was past Rosine and back in the lead. On the next lap Rosine pitted for a rider change and his father John took over. Behind the front runners Team Big Block with riders Matt Maier and Cole Walsdorf held down third place, Action Extreme Powersports was fourth and Rosine Racing fifth. Schnabel pitted for fuel at about the 1:15 mark, but never relinquished the lead to the end. Schnabel’s “Iron Man” tactics seem to work well for him as he has won several ice races riding solo. JR gives thanks for support to Suburban H-D and Cedar Creek Motorsports. Prior to the two hour event there were support races for quads and a kid’s race. The one hour quad race was led from the start by Tyler Vosters, followed closely by Ed Gahagan until Ed spun in turn two and let Vosters get away. From there the two had a good, close race with Vosters holding on for the win. The kids half-hour event saw one of the best races of the day. At their young age, 9

year olds Brady Lange and Jim Schmelling put on a great exhibition of ice racing. Lange took the lead through turn one with Schmelling on his rear wheel. The pair immediately drew away from the pack trying every trick they knew to pass each other, which they did every lap. At the end it was Lange, just barely over Schmelling. In the pits after the race, the two young riders were soaking up all the praise for their great race from the adults. Both Lange and Schmelling started racing at four years old, and with five years of competition under their belts, they look to be the fast guys of the future. This was Schmelling’s first ice! The Wallace Lake event is a fan and family friendly event that shouldn’t be missed. Watch for it next year, make a donation to their cause and enjoy. Results: Heavyweight class: 1.JR Schnabel 2.Zac Rosine, John Rosine 3.Matt Maier, Cole Walsdorf 4.Trevor Schmitt, Zach Genrich 5.Brad Rosine, Drew Wentworth Middleweight: 1.Andre Walsdorf, Todd Walsdorf 2.Brian Murphy 3.Sonny Johnson, Chris Johnson, Trey Johnson 4.Pete Laubmeier 5.Joe Stoppleworth, Chris Baker Lightweight: 1.Tyler Smulders, Ed Smulders 2.John Stewart, Marc Ottenad Quads: 1.Tyler Vosters 2.Ed Gahagan Kids: 1.Brady Lange 2.Jim Schmelling 3.Taylor Huisman

Snow can’t slow D17 GP Opener

Chandlerville, Illinois - March 3 By Ryan Moss Photos by Jennifer Twait

T

he Canton MC teamed up with the Midwest Motocross Club in Chandlerville, IL to put on the first GP of the District 17 season and the first ever event at this location. The Midwest Motocross Club offered a great location for a GP since they have a full MX track, a big open field for a grass track, and plenty of wooded trails. The Canton MC was putting on their first ever GP and did a great job of combining all the above to make a great GP loop. The weather forecast showed a chance of snow in the late afternoon but morning brought sun and great conditions for early

48

CYCLE USA, April 2012

March. The temps did start dropping and half way through the second set of motos as the snow started to drop. It wasn’t a heavy snow but just enough to cover the ground and mess up your goggles. Even with the snow falling it didn’t stop the racers from charging hard and putting on good races for the spectators. The course length was around three miles, lap times around seven - eight minutes. The Canton M/C planned to run the two moto format with each moto being twenty minutes long. This meant three laps, so the riders had to charge hard right from the get go. In the +45 class it was a battle of three different riders from different disciplines. Long time MX rider Gerhard Ward on his Service Honda CR500AF / Megacross / Fox

Valley Off-Road got the holeshot in moto one and led for the first two laps. Jay Hall a long time Enduro / HS rider on his Halls Cycle Husky gave chase along with Jim Perry. On the last lap Ward made a wrong turn and allowed both Hall and Perry to get by. In Moto two it was a repeat on the start but this time S. Sarge jumped in the mix causing a four-way battle. Hall again was able to take the win ahead of Ward. This gave Jay Hall the overall win ahead of Gerhard Ward with Jim Perry taking third. The 122cc-Open class also saw a three way battle from riders of different disciplines. Up and coming Hare Scramble rider Travis Ward on his Service Honda CR250 took the overall win but had to battle Lars Valin on his Halls Cycle Husky in moto one and MX rider

Max Akerman on his B&B Tool Honda CRF450 in moto two. Moto two was probably one of the closest races of the day as both riders pushed each other all the way till the end. In the 14-29 class Alec Perry made his return to racing after a late season injury in 2011 sidelined him. He showed he’s back up to speed by taking both moto wins. The Vintage class was won by long time racer Craig Hayes on his vintage Husky. The 65cc class was added this year to the GP’s, and Garret Ward took both moto wins. Daniel Janus was the only double class winner. Janus rode his Halls / Moose Racing Husky to both moto wins in the +30 class. In the 122-250 class he took second in the first

moto and then won the second moto for the overall. The second moto of the +30 class saw the most snow of the day, but it didn’t slow Janus down one bit, in fact it might have been the fastest moto of the day. Even with the snow falling and the temps dropping everyone that raced commented what a fun day it was. The course had a great mix of everything making it both challenging and fun for all riders, no matter what discipline they normally ride. That in itself is what the GP’s are all about, good job Canton M/C! The club would like to thank Midwest Motocross club for letting them host the event on their property.

Wayne Meek in the mix, the last two laps saw the closest racing. As things tightened up, Hagemeier slid back to fifth. Short used the last lap to jump past Wayne Meek in the pond section jumps, and then the next corners to pull by Damon Meek, and finish second. Damon Meek still finished second overall (2-3) and Hagemeier’s consistent 5-5 moto

his outstanding late winter season has really opened the door for some great early season racing. Today at Hangtime the track was in great shape, and when the sun came out, temps actually peaked at close to seventy degrees. Absolutely perfect for late March, and the racers as well as everyone else at this first Hangtime event couldn’t have appreciated it more. The largest class of the day hit the track first, as the seventeen 250C riders stormed into turn one, with Rensselaer, IN’s Derk Anderson taking the holeshot. As they worked through the first lap and started into lap two, Kaleb McDonald made the pass into first. Shortly after, Suzuki rider Damon Meek followed, and took over second. Todd Kline and Trey Short were in the top five. Anderson slid back a couple more spots in the next two laps to finish a solid sixth. Short had problems of his own, and dropped back to tenth. Coming from mid-pack, and fighting his way up to fifth before the end of the moto was Joseph Hagemeier. Mcdonald pulled a small lead, and rode it to the win ahead of Meek, Kline and Elder. McDonald jumped into the lead in the second moto as well, and left all the racing and position shuffling behind. Good thing, as there was plenty of it. Damon Meek was running second off the start, but getting Quad A winner #78 Matt Simmons pushed by Hagemeier right away. Coming and Josh Wimmer had a great on strong also was Trey Short. finishes were good for third overall ahead of Wayne Meeks (7-4) and Short. The Quad A class only had a couple riders, and ran a combined moto with the B class. The lack of numbers didn’t take away from what turned out to be one of the closest races of the day, with Josh Wimmer and Matt Simmons having a moto long battle.

#494 Isaiah Shelton here with Kelsey Vore, won the 85cc 12-15 class.

Simmons pulled the holeshot and Wimmer was glued to his rear fender right away. Simmons would gain a length, then Wimmer would dive in and try to make a pass. This went on right up to the final lap. Simmons, “I got a great gate drop and felt him on me the whole race. I was trying to push as hard as I could, and stay on the inside in the corners. Going into the last lap he came in on me and just had the line.” Walsh Racing/ Janson Racing backed Wimmer, “I wheelied off the holeshot and rode behind him for a few laps. The track is good, and real sticky, so it made it tough to pull a pass. He made one little mistake down at the bottom of the hill into the corner, and I got under him and we hooked up. I was able to get going and took the lead. It was a great time.” The two were stuck together for a few seconds before Wimmer broke free, and went on to take the win, just ahead of Simmons. Simmons added, “It was a great race, and the track is really

nice.” When asked if he had anyone helping him, “I call myself ‘cashed out racing’, because I’m cashed out and don’t have any money, but I’m still racing!” In the second moto Simmons got around fast B class rider Bradley Baldwin half way through the opening lap. Wimmer had to work up through a few more riders, and as he finally got into second he had a pretty good gap to close, but ran into mechanical problems and wasn’t able to finish. Simmons rode on to win ahead of Bedford, IN’s Brad Kopsho. Christian Gallagher turned in a good first moto ride in the 85cc 12-15 class, coming from mid pack to win ahead of Isaiah Shelton. Kelsey Vore started the moto in second, and then held on at the end for a solid third ahead of J.w. Bright, who had to work his way to the front as well. The order changed up in the second moto as Lagro, IN’s Shelton took the win on his Yamaha ahead of Bright. Vincent Conners improved his first moto fifth, for a

third and fourth overall behind Vore (3-4). Running with the 85Sr riders, was the 9-11 class where Justin Stichter took both moto wins in fashion. Aj Wrobel settled for third in the first moto behind Trevor Lomperski, but got the better of him in moto two, for second overall. Addison Clouse of Cumberland, IN went 1-1 in the Women 12+ class for the overall on her Honda. Emily Eubanks finished second. In the Open C class, Joseph Hagemeier took the first moto win ahead of Stephen Nagy. Tyler Hitchings spent the moto working up, and finished third ahead of Zach Firks and Cj Jenkins.

In the second moto it was KTM rider Nagy stepping it up a notch for the win... and overall as well. Hitchings had a better start, and took full advantage to finish second ahead of Hagemeier. In the overall, Hagemeier’s 1-3 motos were still good for second overall. Another great race in the books for Reads Racing, now celebrating their 30th season of racing in District 15... a huge accomplishment for sure! They have a lot of fun things planned this season, and it all couldn’t have kicked off in a better way. Triplecross Awards Night

2011 Triplecross award winners.

Wisconsin Dells, WI - January 21 By Dave Hollub

Harvey Schave hands over the 2011 pit bike to Keegan Cummins.

alking into the Wintergreen Resort banquet room there was definitely a motocross buzz going on. Memorable racing was the topic as everyone greeted friends and competitors, many that had not seen since the finish of the 2011 season. The only things missing were the sounds of motors and smells of the exhaust. Once the bench racing during the cocktail hour and dinner were over, it was time to begin the night’s other activities. Harvey Schave recounted another great season with the dedicated racers that made it a success, and then announced the 2012 schedule. In order to keep everything as affordable as possible without taking away from the overall competition, there will be eleven races at four tracks, with a July double-header at Arkansaw Cycle Park. In 2012, to be eligible for the awards and door prizes at the banquet racers will need to make four races, one at each track. To be eligible for the bike drawing at the banquet you will only need to attend an

additional three races at any of the host tracks. Once the awards were handed out the night switched over to the door prize stage, and as always the Triplecross sponsors go all out rewarding the racers with tables full of great prizes. There is also a special set of prizes each year for everyone that hangs onto their receipts for purchases from series sponsors during the season, and brings them to the banquet for this drawing, so be sure to remember to support those that support you as you need gear or parts, and hang onto your receipts. Keegan Cummins was the night’s big winner when he was called up as the winner of the 2011 pit bike compliments of the Triplecross tracks and Southeast Sales. Cummins later said, “It was a great season. The tracks were all great this year and they did a good job. It is fun doing the series because I get to go out and see all my friends and race against them. There’s always good competition, and I had a great season this year. I’ll be back again next year. I want to thank my sponsors for 2011- Motosports Factory, Rock River, Brewster’s Lanes, and my Mom and Dad.” CYCLE USA, April 2012

Schave later told me, “This year went well and I think everyone really enjoyed the season. We had a great night tonight, and everyone got at least four prizes. I want to thank the tracks that were involved; they all did a good job hosting us. For 2012 we shortened the series a little bit to make it more affordable. We put in a couple double headers again so people can save some gas coming to

the events. This year we had Ride, Southeast Sales, Spectro Oils, ProAction, Answer Racing, FMF, County Cycle, KTM, Yamaha, Moose Racing, ProTaper, MSR, m7d Media, Meehan’s Juice Plus, and Cityview Custom Repair as sponsors. We are hoping to have them all back in 2012 once again.” As the Brandemushl (right) collects his night came to a Glen +30B championship award from Dave Arva. finish and peo65 7-11: 1.Seth Doeberlein 2.Max Earley 3.Nicholas ple wandered off to their rooms, the Vanlyssel 4.Cody Passineau pool, or the resort bar,, it was obvious 85Jr: 1.Dylan Densow 2.Seth Doeberlein 3.Nicholas Vanlyssel once again the bonds of racing mo85Sr: 1.Mason Persha 2.Jakob Passineau 3.Brady tocross, and especially the Triplecross Bill 4.Kendra Randrup series are still solid. Another great D17 Banquet Ottawa, Illinois - January 28 By the D17 Event Directors

2

011 wasn’t a particular memorable year, but it did generate some great racing and year end awards banquet followed with a good turn out (over 500) and crowned some new champions, along with some old faithfuls. In these times when racing can be harder than ever to do, and the many distractions that are out there, it was great to see so many riders and their families coming to the banquet. It is another reminder of why District 17 is second to none in participation. D-17 stands together on this night, all types of racers, and enjoys the banquet to celebrate the season we’ve all finished in grand fashion. There were multiple winners in multiple types of racing this season as in last. Just some examples like Kash Schnowski winning 50cc chain in Dirt track and taking third in the Motocross 50Sr class. Steve “the Perkinator” Perkins winning 40A class in Hare Scrambles and taking second in Stadium Motocross. Travis Ward, Champion in Little B class Hare Scrambles and taking second in the 250 class in GP’s. A lot of riders are mixing it up, and having even more fun because of it. Then there’s the multiple winners in a division like Parker Smith in Motocross and Tommy Hofmaster in Stadium MX both winning three titles each. Parker showed up tonight with his dad’s 1990 jacket for being a

champion as kids would say “in the old days”. Special note goes out to a young lady who raced all season and won the 14-24 class in MX, which is a first, not to forget she took the Women’s class championship in Mx and a second in Stadium Mx Women’s class. Kayla Miller was “that girl!”. Other notables like Orville Kline winning the +50 class in MX and Gary Shewart in the Vintage class are perennial winners. New this year in MX was Steve Kerber and Bill White after years of trying got on the top step with good championship runs! There was a plethora of double winners in MX and SX this season, to the point that if we listed them it would be another page! Needless to say District 17 MX and SX is keeping up a good participation level thanks to the diligence and exceptional riders it has. The schedule for 2012 is looking great with tracks doing a fantastic job. District 17 tracks have truly stepped up with improvements and all out rebuilds. Not many areas in the country have the selection, frequency, and quality of facilities we have, regardless of whether you race motocross, off road, or just go out to play ride. New this year was the GP series. The series was well received by the riders and the first Champions were crowned at the banquet. Ryan Moss acts as the director of both GP and Enduros, and won two classes, and is the first “double champion” in GP. Matt Dissell from the HS side of things won the Open class, and Doug “smudge” Johnson won the Vintage

class. Father & son Gerhard and Garrett Ward won +45 and Mini classes. Some great racing is in store for the GP series this year with new places to race and a solid ten race series. It was a very good 2011 for Hare-Scrambles in D-17, and the banquet was no exception with Tammy and Jay Hall only having to mail out ten jackets after the banquet. It was very good to see old friends that we race with every weekend. This year the Mark Cain Sportsman of the Year Award went to Bob Marfell and Jerrod Marfell for stopping their race and helping fellow riders. Both have done this for years, and it was time that they got recognized for it. Thanks Guys! Let's all take some time and thank everyone that helps us enjoy our sport, from the

his brother Jim Schaidle in the Sr class, Tito Nappi in novice, Patti Meo in the Women’s class and Jacob Loer in the Youth class. Congratulations to all of our champs! Special recognition goes to the entire NITRO crew

also to landowners including Gary Lingbeck (Lena), Donnie Meehan (Elmwood), Tito Nappi (Pearl City) and Aaron Vincer (Motorsports Park). I (Dan Loer) want to sincerely thank my wife Jennifer for her support, all the riders for their participation and everyone else who contributed to the 2011 trials season. We want to welcome Brushpoppers M/C in Morrison to the 2012 schedule. See you in the sections!! In the Hillclimb division, the Peters family were the biggest winners. Young Levi Peters claimed the class championships in both the 65cc and 85Jr classes, as well as taking the Youth Fast Time plaque, with 11 fast times in the season. He also claimed the Youth Raw Points

award given to the youth rider with the most total points earned all season, in all classes entered. Levi’s dad, Matt, also did well by claiming both the 250cc and 450cc class championships. Cody Jenner was also a double class champion, taking the titles in both the large and fast 600cc and 600cc 4-Stroke classes. Paul Hillard was another double class champion, with wins in the 750cc and 2-Stroke Quad classes. Other special award winners included Mike Pulver who won the Amateur Raw Points award to go with his 400cc Stock class championship. Andy Fortner claimed the Amateur Fast Time award to go with his +40 class championship while Kyle Galloway took the coveted King

Parker Smith, here with his father Jason, won three class championships.

clubs and promoters for putting the races on to our sponsors and dealers that help us, to Mom and Dad. Without their help we couldn’t do what we love to do... and have so much fun. Thanks to all that came and waited for their awards. Next year we are going to try something different, we will be in the big room so we all can get done earlier. “See you on Sunday somewhere,” Jay and Tammy Hall. This year’s banquet unfortunately was light on dirt track attendance, however it was great to see the ones that did make it. 2011 was a very good year and we hope it just gets better for 2012, and we better see even more you here at the annual celebration!

GP Event Champions.

The 2011 Enduro season saw twelve events. The series got to travel to many different places and all those had varied terrains to challenge even the best riders. Thanks to all the clubs for putting the events on, and to the riders for making it a great season. Once again our AA and Grand Enduro Champion was Jeff Fredette on his Team Green/ Moose Racing / FRP KLX450. For many years Jeff has been challenged by up and comers, but year after year he has shown why he is a champion, putting in consistent rides and coming out on top. This year we had a few good class battles through the season. In the Senior B class Kurt Marsan and Bill Elliott battled all season with

Marsan taking the win. In Open A long time enduro riders Dave Edsall and Brian Kahaler swapped the lead through the season with Edsall taking the win. The 250B class had a motocross convert, Anthony Krivi, come in and take the lead early, but Danny Nelson put in a late season charge to take the championship. This year the Top Ten Challenge was back and supported by Fun Mart Cycle. We were able to award the top ten overall A and B riders with a Moose Travel Bag that had their overall finish and name embroidered on them. The District 17 Randy Hatcher Sportsman Award went a very special rider this year. Steven Pawlak was the recipient this year because of his diehard attitude of attending and competing in the events, even though he was battling cancer. Steve fought it just as he fought for the win in the Masters Class this year. Many long time enduro riders know Steve from helping the Hill & Gully club for many years, and riding events across the midwest. Congratulations to Steve, not only on his class win but for winning the battle against cancer as well! Thanks to all the riders and families that came to the banquet! It was a pleasure to hand out the awards and see everyone doing some bench racing. Hope to see everyone at the Grand Kankakee Trail Riders enduro on April 17th. The banquet as usual was a great way to end our Trials season by awarding the top riders and giving thanks. Trial’s has nine classes and awards the season champions. I was very glad to see great trials attendance at the banquet. On hand to receive their awards included Dan Schaidle in the Sportsman class, CYCLE USA, April 2012

season in 2012. District 17 offers some of the best racing, and plenty of events to satisfy most all racing desires. Staying close

and not in the truck! Good luck in 2012 see ya next year!
