CYCLE USA, June 2013
From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman This has been one crazy year to date. We have never seen so many cancelled events in a season let alone just in the month of April. The last snow of the season in the southern part of the state really increased the work load for promoters of early May events. Thousands of trees succumbed to the weight of the wet snow while almost all trees lost limbs. The trail and track clean up took hundreds of hours on the part of club workers. Kuddos to the Golden Eagles for getting the thirty miles of trail cleaned up in time for their mid May trial ride. They are on a limited access schedule to the area, but had a very large club turnout to get the job done. While on the subject of the trail rides, I would like to thank the Golden Eagles and especially our government relations officers Tom and Karen Umphress for building bridges with the Minnesota DNR. Karen and Tom set up a Dirt Bike riding class with several DNR employees so we can get them out on the trails. I was lucky enough to be one of the instructors for the course, and to see the enthusiasm of the new riders was awesome. They kept talking about how much fun they were having. There is no better way to build allies within the system than to teach them to ride and get them out on the trails, and have them absolutely love it. With luck we will have at least a couple more classes of DNR employees to train. The outdoor Nationals have officially started with the opener at Hangtown being run Saturday May 18th. No surprise to anyone Villopoto won both motos. He is focused, in great shape and has the appetite to win. Our own RD 5 went 2-2, and in surprisingly crash free rides Stewart went 3-3.
Announcements, personal stuff, and.... He is on a streak can he go the whole season without hurting himself is the real question. Speaking of MX, the weather has reeked havoc with our series and so far this years our numbers are down markedly. We need all you racers to get out there and support the tracks. I know that the economy hasn’t made a recovery and gas is out of site price wise, but please make as many events as your pocketbook will allow. We also need each member to recruit a new member this year. Bring a friend to your next event. We have a very good thing going, but we need to grow in order to maintain our current level of quality events and stiff competition. I would like to congratulate the clubs and promoters that have been organizing and promoting off-road events, as your numbers continue to grow which shows us that your events are providing the courses that the racers want. The quality of off-road events has been improving with each season. We are seeing the effects of the youth program we put into effect about a decade ago. The young guns are moving up and providing good competition for our established off-road racers. District business is moving along. We have many sponsors again this year, but a special thank you to Fly Racing for the twelve thousand dollars in support. If you need new gear this is the company to get it from. You will see a lot of their gear there with the amount of support they have given us. Legislatively we are not currently looking at any major issues. We are also making plans for our annual fund raising road ride. If anyone out there is interested in putting together an Adventure course let me know, it would be fun to add that to our fund raiser. One last note - racers if you feel you are not at the correct racing level you can not just move down a level. There is a process for this in the AMA rule book. We have been dealing with several of these this season. Petiton the district or call me to get the process but do not move yourself down a level as this may result in suspension of your AMA card. See you on the track and trails of D 23. Mike

Cold Opener for Aztalan Lake Mills, Wisconsin - May 12 By Dave Hollub
A
ztalan Cycle Club is making a huge argument against the theory of global warming. After being frozen out for the April race enough warm weather allowed the members a chance to get the track and grounds all set for a May opener. When everyone started showing up on Saturday for a chance to hit the track during an open practice, the day went from sunny but chilly to scattered snow with more cold. Sunday morning 438 brave entries were ready to shrug off mid 30 degree temperatures to heat up the racing. Maybe Mother Nature was just angry we were out playing on Mother’s Day but that was not going to cool anyone’s enthusiasm. Benjamin Blazek was out front when 50Jr. hit the track, being pushed by Nolan Schweighardt. Nathan Postma was running third before getting passed by Tyler Kostopoulos and Brody Tobianski. On lap four Blazek went down in a corner and Schweighardt held on for the win. Kostopoulos finished second with Aiden Price and Postma right behind him at the finish. In moto two Schweighardt grabbed the holeshot only to drop out before the finish. Kostopoulos finished the moto in first to clinch the overall. Price (3/2) was second overall. The 125Jr. class got the first gate drop on the main track and Jarred Berggren launched into the holeshot. Justin Wolf got around Berggren before they jumped the double off the start and never looked back. Jamison Duclos closed in on Berggren and by the time they hit the plateau Duclos was running in second. The front three held their positions to the finish followed by Shane Cooper and Logan Telfer. Wolf grabbed the moto two holeshot and stayed out front to the checkers. Duclos
Joshua Philbrick had a good day in his two A classes as he opened up with a big holeshot in Unlimited A moto one. Philbrick stayed out front all the way to the checkers with Matthew Menzer chasing him in second. Joseph Dretzka finished third. In moto two Menzer found the power down the start to round the holeshot out front, but his lead only lasted until midway through the second lap. Philbrick slipped out front before he hit the plateau and held off Menzer to the finish. Dillon Kau was running third with Ryan Hughson close behind. Right after their third trip over the plateau Dretzka moved past Hughson and started tracking down Kau. Dretzka caught and passed Kau on lap five then held off Kau’s pressure for the rest of the moto. Philbrick followed up his Unlimited A overall with another overall in Open A where he went 2/1 to edge out Dretzka (1/2). Women's class saw some exciting racing in both motos, and it started as Jade Wennlund edged out Tammy Flemming for the holeshot. Dawn Cox moved up from third into the lead by the time she cleared the plateau. Flemming made her move right after the plateau to take away second from Wennlund. Cox was now extending her lead as Flemming and Wennlund battled for second. On the final lap Flemming got hung up in ruts and stalled her bike giving Wennlund a chance to slip by to finish the moto in second and Alexa Duclos claimed Owen Haseleu in 50Sr grabs the first Aztalan holeshot of 2013. third. Wennlund edged out Cox for the moto two holeshot and then from fourth place into the lead in time to take spent the rest of the moto holding off a deterthe win. Bowman again was out front at the mined Cox. Wennlund (2/1) took the overall moto two holeshot beating Blakey around the with Cox (1/2) and Duclos (3/3) rounding off corner. Bowman battled hard holding Blakey the podium. and then later in the moto Wolf behind him to Wennlund after the race commented take the win. Ben Schweighardt moved “This is the greatest feeling ever, winning my through the pack to grab second, edging out first overall. I am so happy right now. The both Wolf and Niles. A 4/1 day was good for race went really good but I honestly didn’t Bowman to take the overall while Wolf (3/3) think I was going to hold her (Cox) off to the was second and Niles (2/4) third. and Berggren finished off the top three for both the moto and the overall. In +30B/C Andy Bowman was out front with Jeff Ramsay close behind at the holeshot. Bowman looked like he was going to cruise to the moto win until both Greg Niles and Thomas Wolf slipped past him on lap three. On the white flag lap Troy Blakey charged up

end. She kept sneaking her nose in but I just held on, I just wanted it so bad. I guess my specialty is holeshots and today my Dad told me I could do it the rest of the moto as well, and I guess I believed him finally. I hope this is the start of something new for me. New gear, first win, I hope it is a new start. The track today was just awesome, nice lines and lots of bumps, they did a great job between yesterday and today, I’m impressed. I have to thank my Mom, it is Mother’s Day and it is important to me that she is out here. Also thanks to my Dad, he got my bike ready, so maybe that is what did it. My sisters Morgan and Maddy and all my friends that came out to support me.” Sportsman B/C belonged to Tylor Skodras as he lead the thirty-three rider class into the holeshot, and all the rest of the day to post a 1/1 overall win. Kail McCormack came out fast and managed to hang close to Skodras for a couple laps before getting pressed by Justin Wolf who was moving up after a bad start. Midway through lap four Wolf slipped into second. Tylor Strauss finished fourth. In Moto two Wolf got a better start and immediately settled into second behind Skodras while Strauss held on in third for the entire 8 CYCLE USA, June 2013
moto. When +50 got their gatedrop Thomas Dretzka barely edged out Tim Boblin at the holeshot corner, but soon the challenge was going to come from Edward Smulders who moved up from a fifth place start. As they came over the plateau Dretzka and Smulders jumped bar to bar. Smulders got the lead in the barn section but was unable to shake Dretzka off his rear wheel. On their third time over the plateau Dretzka was once again out front and held on to the finish. Jeff Ramsay and Kurt Andrews also had an ongoing battle for third before Ramsay won out. In the second moto Dretzka grabbed the holeshot and began laying some distance on the rest of the class. Andrews began defending against challenges, first from Ramsay and then on lap two Smulders. Smulders got by on lap three and held on to the finish while Andrews held onto third, giving him the edge over Ramsay for the final podium spot in the overall. Smulders after the race, “Tommy and I battled from the first lap in moto one. It was really a good time since it was the first time I ever got to battle like that with him. It turned out that Tom beat me, but I’ll tell you I have never gotten to battle all out
with him and it was a great. The track was good, it seemed to really hold up all day. It got rough and held the ruts good all day, especially with over 400 riders. My new KTM was a little off the first moto but Rob worked on it a little and the second moto it was perfect. I really want to thank Rob’s Performance, Smith Goggles, my son Tyler, little Tylor Skodras, and everyone else that has really helped me out the last year.” With Aztalan always hosting a race on Mother’s Day it just proves how special Moto-Moms really are. They give up a special day to come out to the track. Brooke Fluger Skodras (motomom to two PW racers) talked about being here. “I am out here because my Daughter Sutton is racing 50Sr and My Son Ryder turned four yesterday, so he is racing his first Junior race. I couldn’t imagine being any
where else today, the family that plays together stays together. This is about family and that is why we are here. And no, I am not going to race again even though the kids want me to.” In the end the entire Motocross community is one big family and everyone appreciates the Moms for everything they do to keep the sport alive. Despite it being their day as I walked through the pits I saw Moms cleaning bikes and gear, helping racers get ready to head out, making sure they were hydrated or had eaten, and most importantly cheering on their kids (as well as everyone else's) to make sure it was a great day. Ferderer tops Spring Creek HS Millville, Minnesota - May 12 By Keith McKenna & Mike Quinn
S
unday May 12th was a day of the first really good weekend in southern Minnesota. The previous week’s races were cancelled due to record snow levels, and riders were more than excited to get out and tackle the trails and woods at a first race. Spring Creek MX Park was host to over three hundred District 23 Hare Scrambles racers, quite a turnout for sure! We had ideal weather conditions for the grueling event. Sunny skies and cool conditions made the race at Spring Creek in picturesque Millville MN, a great event. A beautifully prepared race course comprised of deep sand, glass smooth grass track, tight woods, steep hills and a champi-
onship caliber motocross track. Considering the course was laid out with snow still on the ground and the late thaw, the course held up really well. The day was divided into segments for the different levels of racers. First off the line were the Premier and Mini classes. Racing for approximately 45 minutes, the young up coming racers learned the course quickly and had some really good racing. KTM mounted Colton Reschke led from start to finish in the Premier class. Alex Tweeton took runner-up honors while his sister Miranda Tweeton rode her KTM to the win in the Girls’ 9-15 class. The second race of the day was our Micro and Macro classes, held on an extended track along the creek. Due to the overly wet con-
Lane Armstrong had a great ride to get the C class overall.

ditions the course, had to shortened up some which made for short laps, but lots of them for the kids that all seemed to have a fantastic time. Travis Illies and Rebekah Buchholz were the only two racers to put in sixteen full laps for the top two spots. Kyle Mossengren tallied up sixteen laps in the 50cc micro class for the win. Back to the main track for race number three and the C classes along with the wiley veterans of the over 60 Masters class. The C class overall went to Lane Armstrong as well as the 250C class victory on his beautifully prepared Kawasaki KX250 in a flag to flag win, with Mitchell Thelen on his KTM taking second overall, and first in the 200C class. The Women’s class saw Yamaha mounted #911 Mary Schreiner on the top step of the podium with KTM mounted Kristi Grote a close second. The last race of the day left the line at 2:00 P.M. First off the start line was a talent laden AA class. Right off the start Team
Northstar Off-Road Husqvarna mounted rider #63 Nate Ferderer grabbed the lead. He led the entire two hour race, fending off a challenge from hard charging Klye Nelson. Unfortunately for Nelson mechanical problems took him out of the race on the last lap. Honda CRF mounted #11 Dylan Debel came in second behind Nate. Overall A went to Boris Mahlich from the Vet A class. 200B racer Nick Swenson took his Yamaha to the overall B win with stellar ride as well. The trails held up really well considering the tremendous amount of moisture in the soil. Some of the downhills developed massive breaking bumps, but all in all it was a great day of racing. Thanks to Wylie Johannessen and crew for laying out a great course, and making it all happen with the late minute changes due to the weather conditions. Another neat addition to the day was the Larsons Cycle interactive display along the starting line with KTM products. It was a nice touch.
Kevin Plzak finished fifth in the 250A class at the Millville hare scrambles.

S
ome would argue that the first sign of spring is seeing the robin. Well, for the Cedar Valley Trail Riders, it would be the revving of motors and congregation of riders and spectators alike. April 27th was the kickoff of the season in Cedar Rapids and the weather could not have been any more perfect. The stands started to fill up and the pits were loaded with trailers and bikes of all shapes and sizes. The 2013 Motocross season was more than ready to wake up from a long winter and cold wet start of spring. After the practice session and National Anthem, nothing else can match the first gate drop of the year. You can feel the rumble of the bikes at the gate and hear the motors at top throttle. The yellow light flashes and the gate drops. The motocross season has started with the Open A
riders and their drive from the starting gate and giving us the quality of racing that has come to be expected. There was a pretty impressive lineup tonight with the total of 12 Open A riders all vying for the first place position of the first race of the year at Hawkeye Downs. Devin Reed from Indianola, Iowa clinched the first place position in each moto to take the overall 1st place position. From there on each class of bikes and quads left no hesitation as to how tough the competition this year will be. The 250C class was full with 15 riders at the gate. Matthew Situmeang kept the remaining at bay while taking the win in both motos with Michael Hite placing 2nd in both. The quad 90 CVT left no stones unturned either. Gage Beebe secured the 1st place winnings in both moto’s while Bryce Wilson took the 2nd place for the night and Austin Hayes earned the 3rd spot.
Will Fingalsen finished second in the thirteen rider 50Sr class.
What is exciting to see is all of the upcoming riders. The 50’s class just keeps growing. There was the total of 33 riders in the 50 seniors, 50 juniors and 50 mini’s bikes and quads. This is going to be an exciting year for all racers from 4 to +50 (well stick with that number). Oddly enough, the +40 class also continues to build with a total of 13 in the A’s and B’s as well. Tonight seemed more about being back into the action for many. Dusting off the cobwebs from the last years gear and understanding again what it will take to endure the race season. The placement of where each racer finished was absent from the rider talk. Instead it was full of how much fun it was to be back at the track, seeing familiar faces and quite frankly a perfect start to a new season. Quad B/C rider Gramm Meyer on the gas!

R
acing this spring has been difficult to say the least with rain almost every other day, and weekends always seem wet. Mother nature has a way of leveling the playing field and this year is simply a make up for last year’s drought. This weekend, with a double header weekend planned (GP and HS), it was clear that running the GP would lose the fun factor a lot with the slick and muddy conditions, not to mention killing the good trails needed for Sunday. Canceling the GP Saturday was the way to have a good day for Sunday’s hare scrambles, and it sure did. The much anticipated race with new riders in new classes was set. Only a hand full of races so far and the veterans of the classes had to wonder what new kid on the block was going to give them some competition. First off the line was SuperMini/ 85cc/ 65cc/ Women race at 9am. New at Fox Valley this season, is that the Women are back in the morning session and it seemed they liked it a lot better. Nikki Dixon (402) returned to the racing scene as a proud new mama, and kicked it off with the holeshot, not losing much speed after the year off. Chelsea was back as well! Chelsea Marfell/ now Fehring, showed she has kept up on her racing form, came to battle with last year’s top riders Kimi Gardner, Autumn Franklin and Kristy Roland. 9 total in that class is good competition and Fehring and Dixon didn't waste any time claiming the top spots. Gardner rode well and finished third. Mason Schuhler (255) is going to be the kid to watch and beat this next few years. Schuhler holeshotted the Super Mini class and Jacob McCarrens rode very well but couldn't keep the blistering pace set by the youngest of the Schuhler brothers. Looks like the test that Schuhler had this weekend was passed with flying colors. Being this is likely his last race in the Mini or C classes, off to B class it is. Now lets see how he eventually catches his big brothers in the A class. The 85cc class is full of last year’s transplants from 65’s. With the new blood it will be interesting to see who starts to find thier way to the front of the class on a regular basis. Dougie Propper took the win with Thor Rick and Rylan Frankford rounding out top three. 65cc class welcomes almost all new riders with the exception of Garrett Ward. New comers Blake

Jason Pelka and Logan Marshall section added this year. Head over heals they struggled in the early laps to finish strong and went, Sexton retiring with the flat, and realize they can run the bigger courses with Stevenson in the crash suffering a ripped raease. diator hose. Steve Daniels returned this year +40A and 30A came off the line at one after a bad leg break last season, and it was time at Fox Valley and Doug Propper of 40A good to see him again. A rude welcoming got the holeshot. Steve Perkins, after a little time off decided that racing really was what he likes to do. Bark busters are used to the limits as this motocrosser comes down the trail and he was quickly leading the group. Mark Shaefer and Kenny Otterbach kept Perkins honest, but in the end it was a futile hunt. Perkins finished in the lead, some of the vegetation was destroyed but with all the rain this year it will recover nicely before the next race event. Open A was as full of newcomers as was the AA class. Drake Lineback (127), making the haul from southern IL had his hands full after having to push start his bike. All this did was hone Lineback’s passing skills as he picked off riders one by one on his way to a win. Tim Reid, riding friends with Lineback was the last one to give up the lead, pushing almost twice his age, Reid fought well but Lineback's relentless pressure made the end result inevitable. The Schuhler brothers moved up from B last year, Riley (121) and Nolan (145) decided to trade places all afternoon with Riley claiming the bragging rights at supper Sunday night on that duo's competition. Riley, the super aggressive style and Nolan's consistency makes for a great brother rivalry. Honorable mention to this A class bout, Scotty Sexton and Josh Stevenson were running top five and in the Overall winner Matt Dissell

with all the "pups" in the class, Daniels rode hard and finished fifth. Thirteen riders in the A class, Nine in AA made the competition steady and deep. Little and Big B classes were chocked full of old and new as well. Luke Kelly holeshotted little B class with Nate Hornung right there with his RCR/ Borelli Kaw in the hunt in Big B. Jarred Hall and Colton Saylor worked their way to the front as Kelly had some trouble in the creek. Jeff Gourly filled the last podium spot with a well earned third. +30B had a good battle for the top spot, Lee Orme (the Matco tool guy) hounded Luke Kaszynski who won the class by a few seconds. AA class - Travis Ward, Ryan Moss, Alex Perry, Travis Held, Austin Wells, Jeff Kaylor, Chris Huffman, Grant Bodmer. This class has new comers, old guys and the like. Matt Dissell proved that his seven years in the top classes at the ripe old age of 22 made him the "kid" to beat this day. Matt’s starts are not as important as his finishes. Feeding home town boy Travis Ward enough rope/ time to lead this event for about an hour, Matt picked his spot "rock creek" passed and cruised for the overall win. Ryan Moss, the true "Old
Man" of the class came up from third to pass Ward and let his student know that at thirty-eight years old he can still put down fast times. Alec Perry, rode a good race, known for his super aggressive style, he rode smooth and solid for one spot off the podium. Travis Held, decided time to step it up and play in the top class this year, the tall lanky always smiling "Held" on tight for the fifth spot. A bigger turn out in the ATV's this season was good to see. Some of the riders like Dan Burkitt and Dan Siener were back from injury last year. Good to see them riding and not losing to much over the winter. Bryan Witterscheim led the way as he did last summer. Burkitt was the only other quad to hit the ten lap mark. Kevin Johnson kept the pace til later in the race. A couple hot rod quad riders ventured over from Iowa since their race was cancelled due to snow! Chad Moret and Dan Lewellyna brought over their very fast and nimble Can AM utility quads. Those things were kickin it. Borelli Suspension/ Cycles backed Garry Borelli decided to run his utility today and brought home a podium position! Even with rain all day Friday, and some on Saturday, it

Wild Wade Fastest at Cayuga Cayuga, Indiana - April 28 By Bud Northrup Photos by Gordon Green & Martha Peters
I
t has become almost a tradition that the first hillclimbs of the season at the Pleasure Riders M/C are run in the rain and mud. That tradition continued this year, as the Saturday night portion of the weekend doubleheader was stopped after the first round in a drenching rain. The Sunday event started in drizzling rain, but continued as the rain abated and the riders got both rides, although on a very muddy hill. The hill was very slick, and times were, understandably, somewhat slower than those delivered Saturday night. It was very hard to first find traction, then go straight up and over. ‘Wild Wade’ Schultz responded well to the conditions, claiming the Fast Time award both days. He took the Saturday award by sailing over the 160 foot hill in 4.082 seconds on his CR500 to win the 600cc class. Andy Fortner was his closest challenger for both the class win and for Fast Time. Fortner’s 4.253 second time was good for second in the 600cc class, and his very quick 4.111 second run to win the Senior class was second fastest ‘Wild’ Wade Schultz - Overall Fast Time both days. of the day. With Scott Petty carding a 4.133 second time, Schultz posting a after Schultz turned in a 4.348 second run in 4.137 second run and Matt Peters fourth in the 600cc class, good for only fourth behind 4.149 seconds, the Senior class had a tight Denson, Joe McGurer (4.220) and Fortner pack at the top. Some old guys are still fast! ((4.304). On Sunday, Eric Wheelwright set an But Schultz still had another run coming early Fast Time in the 250cc class in the first in the Senior class. Schultz’s run in the first round, then Josh Denson sailed his KX500 round had him in second place behind Matt over in 4.172 seconds to set the top time in the Peters, who had taken the first round lead with 600cc class. That time held up well into the a 4.240 second time on his KTM450. In the second round, and looked especially good second round, Schultz charged straight up the middle of the hill on his Honda with a minimum of tire spin (hard to do on the slick hill), and topped out in 4.130 seconds to take the class win as well as the Fast Time Award for the second day in a row. In youth class action, Derick Bell claimed the Youth Fast Time Saturday with a 4.697 second time on his KX85 to win the 85Jr class. It was his second in a row, having taken the Youth Fast Time at the Central Illinois M/C climb the previous Sunday. Derick won the class again on Sunday, but his 5.431 second time was just 4 thousandths short of the fast time. Levi Peters ran his Kawasaki over in 5.427 seconds to win the 85Sr class, as well as claiming the Youth Fast Time. Great First D23 Hare Scrambles Cambridge, Minnesota - May 5 By Danielle Artmann
I
t was the longest winter ever! Two weeks before D23’s first scheduled Hare Scramble of the season, Cambridge received another snowfall that left a few people questioning whether the race would even take place. But the Norsemen Motorcycle Club trail boss team and dedicated club members didn’t let that stop them from their goal of

putting on a fun, fast, and challenging event. “If you build it, they will come.” Their hard work paid off. Race day began cloudy and cool. The light rains in the days leading up to the event were enough to keep the track from being too dusty. Conditions were near perfect for the 351 racers that arrived, many of them not having had much practice time on their bikes, if any at all. You could feel the excitement and anticipation in the air. The first racers of the day were the youth classes, starting with PeeWee, Premier and Girls, followed by the Micro and Macro classes. These young racers made their way around a course designed for speed & technique. They raced through the motocross track, up wooded hills filled with winding single-track & along fast straight-aways. They were quick and determined. It’s always a lot fun watching them race. Macro racer Charlie Siebenaler quickly grabbed the first place spot and held the position for eight laps, taking home the first place trophy, followed by second place racer, Travis Ilies. It was an excit-

ing race for third position between Ryanne Artmann and Cora Reschke. Artmann, who held third position nearly the entire race, took a peek back once she hit the TT Track, only to find Reschke at full throttle and hot on her tail. The two battled it out till their last lap when Reschke took the third place position and got one more lap in over Artmann. It was a great battle. At trophy presentations, Reschke was also the winner of the “Youth Fly Bucks” drawing, where she won “Fly Bucks”, redeemable for a new set of Fly riding gear. Congratulations to Miss Reschke and all of the Youth participants. The C class race followed, and proved to be great as well. Racers were treated to a fast-paced course and a taste of the A/B endurocross section. They were able to ride the over and under bridges, tire obstacles and a log pit. For many, going through the first time was “easy”. As Women’s class racer, #222 Tina Rahlf put it, “You didn’t think about it the first time you went through, you just did it, but then by the second lap, you knew what was coming! I looked forward to that section. The whole course was perfect.” The main event was up next. The course for the AA/ A/ B riders
was approximately seven miles of woods, open grassy terrain, motocross, floating bridge crossings, over and under bridges and a spectator-friendly endurocross section which consisted of deep whoops, barrels, tire obstacles and a log pit. Racers were given their first unexpected “obstacle at the start line. It was a dead engine start and riders had to stand behind their bikes, both hands on the rear fender. At the gun, it was those quickest to mount their bike and get it started that got the lead into the first turn. In theory, this would give everyone a fair shot to get out in front as well as thin out the pack from the get go. It proved to be only a temporary setback for AA rider, #63 Nate Ferderer, who started out at the back of the pack and had a first turn crash. He recovered quickly and by the end of the first lap, Ferderer had made his way into second place position, trailing behind AA rider, #94 Kyle Nelson by nine seconds. By lap two, Ferderer had taken the first place spot from Nelson and maintained that position to the finish. When asked for his thoughts regarding the race, Nate said, “The conditions were really good and enjoyable. Once I got into the lead I felt really good and comfortable on my Husqvarna. I had a lot of fun. Cambridge proved to be a great start for D23’s Hare Scramble season. There were many people involved in putting on this event. The Norsemen Motorcycle Club put a lot of hard work and heart into this race. Trail bosses Jim Kittock and Jim Artmann are very thankful for the crew that came out and weathered the snow and sleet and rainy weekends to help build bridges and lay out the trail. Thank you to all the racers for coming out and participating, and thank you to all of the spectators that cheered them on. Thank you to Princeton Fire and Rescue Dept for lending a hand. And finally, thank you to Keith Wiger who took first place in Senior C class who posted this on armca.org forum, “Great event guys!!! Rapid Angels D16 MX Opener
Nicholas Randrup (#287) swept both motos of the large 250C class.
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - April 28 By Doug Forstner Photos by Troy Fisher
T
he Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club has been hosting motocross races at the Dyracuse Recreational Park for as many years as most anyone can remember. Every year though, you never know what mother nature will bring being an early season race, and this year was no exception with the crazy spring everyone was having. With just a couple of days prior to the race, the club wasn’t certain if they were even going to be able to host the race as there was still ice hiding in the shadows of the track. However, with a little luck and a lot of work by the club, the race was able to run. On race day, the riders were treated to unseasonably warm spring weather, and no one was complaining!!! The day started off with the younger riders hitting the supercross track. 50Jr was a full gate of hungry and eager little racers. Deegan Vanvreede from Freedom, WI was able to lead the pack in moto one coming in ahead of Brody Tobianski and Karter Fell. For both Peewee and 65cc classes, they run the motos back to back right away in the morning, and then all the flaggers and track workers switch over to the big track. The riders have about a fifteen minute in-
on the big track. Once the action started out on the big track, the Quad B/C class caught my attention. Plenty of action throughout as riders were jockeying for position in the first moto. Graham Eichmiller took home the honors in moto one ahead of local Devin Borski and Rowdy Jinsky. In moto two though, it was Bret Beier who took the moto win. Unfortunately his ninth in moto one hurt in the overall hunt. Jinsky ran a solid race taking second in moto two and his 3-2 score netted him the overall on the day. Travis Ziembo went 5-3 for second overall besting Catherine Verbeten (4-4). The largest class on the day was 250C, as thirty-nine riders filled the gate. It’s been awhile since I have seen a full gate at Dyracuse, and I was pretty excited to watch the action coming into turn one. It was local Nick Randrup on his Kawasaki pulling the holeshot, and checking out with a convincing win ahead of Matt Porter and Taylor Roloff. Brady Shaw and Nick Anderson were having a great battle for the top five. In moto two it was again Randrup taking the holeshot and leading wire to wire. Anderson was able to put together a good moto and finish in the runner up position. His 5-2 scores netted him fourth overall. ing his job of getting the overall easier than having to come through the pack. Randrup also was able to win both motos in Open C class, making him one of the double class winners of the day along with Matt Maier who took the +25A and Open A wins and Mat Herrington who won +25B/C and Open B. New Vet rider and Cycle USA contributor Cody Wills won a hard fought overall in the +30A class, beating local sand ace and District 16 President Todd Ellingson and Kris Bindel who put in solid rides both motos. Cody has been racing his home track for years and it was his first win at one of the roughest tracks on the circuit. With the season now officially kicked off, this race is one to remember... a warm, dry day in the northland for a season kick-off is always a treat. The club did a great job as always!! Thank you to everyone who made it a great day.

A nice, dry Marshfield MX Marshfield, Wisconsin - May 19 By Doug Forstner
T
he sun actually came out as the T&T Riders hosted their annual District 16 motocross event this year. If you are a regular spectator here or have raced at the event in the past, you know that Mother Nature usually plans on rain the week of or day of the race. Being the track is located out in the marsh lands, too much rain doesn’t help the situation. However, this year, the crew was

watering to make sure things weren’t actually going to be dusty. The crew had the track nice and tilled up and just the right amount of moisture was in the soil to make for almost perfect racing conditions. The Peewee class started the day out as these little warriors get to race on the whole track, making for some good action as they get a lot of track time. Both peewee classes jumped out together on the bungee cord start for moto one. Easton Block was out front early in 50Sr, and he continued to lead Matthew Trulen and Trevor Simone. In 50Jr it was Kaden Berger who was leading Nathan Jinsky and Jordyn Olver. In moto two, again Block was leading them all to the checkers going 1-1 in the class. In 50Jr though, it was Jinsky who took the moto win ahead of Olver and Berger. It was Jinsky’s first win and he was pretty happy. The 65cc class was a pretty full class of two stroke rippers. Hunter Swienton of Green Bay, WI pulled the holeshot in moto one and led the pack. Behind Swienton was a big battle of riders fighting over second place. Levi Laporte, Logan Roberts and Sam Forstner were dicing back and forth for position. As the race was closing down, it was Forstner moving past Roberts and Laporte with Luke Vanlyssel rounding out the top five. In moto two, Vanlyssel blasted his KTM into the lead ahead of the pack of riders. Swienton, Laporte, Forstner, Roberts and Block were all giving chase. Vanlyssel led the first three laps over the tight battle ensuing behind him. All the riders were separated by about one second. Forstner found an opening and moved into the lead on the white flag, and held on for the win ahead of Laporte and Swienton. Forstner took the overall with his 2-1 scores besting Swienton who went 1-3 and Laporte going 4-2. 250B class was next off the line. It was the #720 of Jeffrey Stewart getting out front. great battle was going on behind the leader. Alex Bresina, Nate Glassford, Eric Anderson, and Hayden Henry were all giving chase. As the moto developed, it was Glassford getting ahead of Bresina with Stewart alone out front. In moto two again it was Stewart finding the fast lines and getting out front. Tom Perryman had a good start and was also running in the top five this moto mixing it up with Bresina and Bredan Gille. Bresina figured out some good lines and held onto to second behind Stewart and his 3-2 was good enough to lock up second overall on the day. Glassford hung around for fifth in moto two so his 2-5 was good for the last step on the podium. Perryman went 6-3 and Gille was 7-4 to round out the top five overall. Open A had a few riders showing everyone the fast way around the track. During intermission, the track crew went back out on the track to till it up again and clean up all the jump faces. Watching the 450A guys tear it up, the roost was really flying. Laporte was using the race as a tune up for the outdoor national in Colorado the following week, and looked smooth out front, pulling away from the rest of the guys. Behind him were Talon Bronk, Andy Lieders, Marcus Markee and Tyler Stoll rounding out the top five. Bronk had good starts and was able to battle with Lieders, but both motos Lieders was able to sneak past and get the runner-up spot. Markee and Stoll swapped position with Markee getCYCLE USA, June 2013 31
ting fourth and Stoll rounding out the top five. Quad class was combined with Ryan Mientke alone in Quad A, with a bunch of B/C riders behind him. CWIRA ice racer Graham Eichmiller looked like he was in pretty good form trying to stay with the faster Mientke, which helped him stay ahead of the Rowdy Jinsky, Terrance Gorski, Adam Bender and Chris Latourneau. Jinsky and Gorski battled each other both motos, with Gorski running up the back fender of Jinsky both times. In moto one Latourneau finished fourth just ahead of Bender. In moto two, Eichmiller again followed Mientke which helped him get the overall in B/C class. Jinsky rode well just ahead of Gorski who rounded out the podium. Bender was fourth in the moto for fourth overall beating out the consistent ride of Jason Nest. his weekend round two of the Arsenal Series at Joliet MX got underway as the sun faded and the lights came on. The track had undergone some changes and this was the first time for everyone to able to run the new setup. A much longer section of whoops was added as well as a step-up section to the middle of the track. The C class was mixing it up at every turn tonight, with it being anyone’s game out there. In 250C the gate dropped and Michael Bank took the lead with Seth Bogash and Juan Wonders right behind. Coming through the new whoops section Bogash moved into the lead, just to have Bank shut the door on him in the next turn after going to the inside, re-taking the lead. Meanwhile Alec Leasure made a move on Wonders through the whoops to take over third. Coming through the step-up, Bogash went to the inside to take over the lead again while Brandon Larson got inside of Leasure to take over third. Bank moved into the lead, and coming through the whoops for the second time Leasure made his way around Larson to take over third, and charge ahead. Coming through the rhythm section Leasure got the inside line on Bogash and snuck into second. They came across the checkers with Banks taking the win followed by Leasure and Bogash. In Open C some of the same faces were back out there this time with Brandon Larson taking the holeshot ahead of Seth Bogash and Alec Leasure. Coming through the whoops Leasure swapped, letting Juan Wonders move into third. As the laps ticked down, Larson

dove inside of Bogash, pushing it too hard and went down, putting Wonder into second and Nathan Rega in third. Larson took the win followed by Wonders and Bogash. +30B/C was a great race tonight with Billy Mccauley getting the early jump on his Suzuki followed by Nick Smith and Brian Carey. Coming over the table top Jason Skudrna made his move and got around Carey.
+25B riders Bryon Olson, Billy Mccauley and #715 Matt Segatto.
Into the step-up section they were three wide as Carey jumped into third only to have to move out of the away and land nose, first going over the bars. This put Skudrna back into third, and starting to make a run on Smith. Mccauley was running smooth up front as Skudrna got to the inside of Smith, passing for second right over the finish line jump. Coming around for the checkers Mccauley took the win followed by Skudrna and Smith. The B class weren’t short on excitement tonight with 250B on the line next. Mitch Cerda got the holeshot despite a wrist injury from a crash in practice, which turned out to actually be broken upon a visit to the doctor, all he had to say about it was “well that’s racing”. He was getting chased off the start by Stephen Stocklen and Jake Cook. Coming over the table top it was clear the wrist wasn’t going to hold up as Stocklen, Cook, and Ricki Williams quickly slid into the top three. Coming across the line the order hadn’t changed with everyone out there pushing it as hard as possible, Stocklen took the win. 85Jr was out next with Christopher Gallagher taking the early lead followed by Shawn Thompson and Patryck Pietrzak. Right before the whoops Thompson went to the inCYCLE USA, June 2013 33
side to take over the lead while Pierce Rodgers moved into third, flying through the whoops. Coming into the rhythm section, Tj Lowe had been ripping after a bad start, and took over third place. As the laps ticked away the order was set of for the race as Thompson won with Gallagher and Lowe right behind. The A classes were on fire tonight, and Bryan White was out in both, making a clean sweep of it. Jon Williams showed up late with only a 125 to ride and was putting it to work out there as he battled hard in both classes. In 250A White took the win followed by Zach Martino on his Husqvarna and Matt Hammond. In Open A White won with Hammond in second and Williams third, keeping up with those 450s on his 125. Action Heats-Up in Byron Byron, Illinois - May 5 By Josh Rud, www.ShiftOnePhotography.com
O
n May fifth round two of the Nuke Series in Byron Illinois was underway. Some more changes have been made to the track, most notably the large table near the starting gate got twisted around, and the back downhill loop is opened up once more. Everything is shaping up great at the track with the Regional coming soon. There was some great racing out at the track as always, and a bit of rain the day before did a great job of watering the track. 14-24 was up first, in the first moto Burlington, Wisconsin’s Brandon Marescalco took the win followed by Jonathan Hartman and Justin Hager. The gate dropped on the second moto with Hager getting out front with Marescalco and Ryan Robinson right behind him. Charging hard, Damon Thomas got around them in the sweeper and started making a good gap. Coming through the sand whoops Thomas was holding on out front, Hager was a little

ways back and Hartman had moved into third. On the second lap Thomas had a mechanical issue and had to pull off the track, putting Hager back in the lead, while holding off Marescalco and Hartman. Coming back down the hill on the third lap everything had changed with Hartman in the lead and Hager slipping back to third. On the last lap Marescalco was able to take over the lead for the win leaving him with first overall. Jeremey Giesholt found his way around Hager after a hard fought moto, but pulled a DNF in the first round giving Hartman second overall, and Hager third. 85Sr came to the gate with twelve riders. In the first moto Eddie Norred Jr took the win with Mason Hulsey and Ben Ibianskas rounding out the top three. The gates slammed down on the second moto with Norred getting an early lead followed by Hulsey and Mike Carter. Coming into the second turn Cameron Poces moved into third, and then going through the sweeper Hulsey took over the lead leaving Norred in second. Hulsey and Norred started opening a good gap on the pack while Ibianskas was starting to battle with Poces over third. With the hammer down Ibianskas made a move around Poces to take over third. Norred was unable to get a line on Hulsey leaving him to cross the line for the win and overall. Open C first moto was taken by Nathan Lange followed by Colten Burk and Bradley Kane. Off the line all twenty-five riders shot off looking to get out front in the second moto. Coming into the first turn four wide Burk snuck out front to take the holeshot with Roland Gomez and Andrew Friebele right behind him. Coming up to the sand whoops Burk was still holding the lead, Lange had moved up to second with Michael Prince behind. Burk continued to pull away from the pack on his 250 Suzuki. Coming across the line to the white flag Prince started to swap out in the whoops, slowing considerably, and Ryan Fisher was able to take over third and keep it to the checkers. This gave Burk the overall with Lange taking second and Fisher third with a fifth place finish in the first moto. I spoke with Burk about his race, asking how he felt transferring from his 450 to the brand new 250. “The 250 is quite a different beast. You can definitely tell where you are riding lazy on the bigger bike. The 250 makes corner speed even more important than ever before.” 250B had plenty of good racing as well. In the first moto Mark Marincic took the win followed by Nick Inman and Jordan Mackiewicz. The gates dropped on the second
moto with a battle up front right away. Inman blasted out front and snuck by everyone as Parker Smith and Trevor Hayes got into each other, with Smith able to hold on as Hayes lost some ground. Coming up to the first hill Inman was on a mission and already had a couple second lead. Smith was behind him as Marincic and Brennon Kershaw came over the hill side by side. Coming over the line starting the second lap Inman had gained an easy ten second lead as Marincic moved into second. Marincic put on a great charge going after the overall, but was unable to reel Inman in. Smith held on for third, but with a sixth place finish in the first moto took fourth overall. Kyler Hyde ended in third with two fourth place finished. Open A came out with the biggest charge I’ve seen in a while. Justin Kelly took the win in the first moto followed by Zach Coons and Ty Tyrrell. In the second moto they came into the first corner four wide with Tyrrell a wheel ahead. Kelly coming in hot got shook up and hit Tyrrell, taking a couple riders down, as he made it around the next corner and got into the side of Logan Skaggs and went down as well. The bobble gave Coons the advantage to take over the lead with Justin Hager and Tyrrell right behind him. Kelly was knocked back to seventh and got back up to start an epic charge through the pack. Coming down the hill on the first lap Coons was still out front with Chris Lazzaretto moving into third. As the laps ticked by Coons and Tyrrell were chasing each other and Kelly was taking a spot every lap. With the white flag waving Tyrrell was right on the tail of Coons and Kelly made his way around Lazzaretto to come all the way back to third. Coming into the second to last corner Tyrrell made his way around Coons hitting the inside and stuck with it for the win. Tyrrell took the overall with a third and first, followed by Coons taking second both motos. It was a great day as always out at Motorsports Park, some great races and just a taste of the action to come this summer. The day went by smooth as ever with little track work needed thanks to the rain the day before. I’m looking forward to Nuke three to see how the track is coming along in preparation for the regional, which will be a great day to be out at the park.

Wentland, Haas top Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - May 26 & 27 By Rolfe Otterness
J
esse Wentland and Brandon Haas battled in the A classes to break in the new season at Spring Creek Motocross Park. Wentland, a national amateur champ last summer, just recovering from a broken collarbone and Haas, co-founder of Club MX riding school in South Carolina had some good battles in the A classes. Haas is originally from Minnesota and showed he still has good speed to run with a young pup like Wentland. This traditional Memorial Day weekend double-header was not scheduled as the first of the year at Spring Creek, but the early May race was canceled due to 18 inches of snow that fell a couple of days prior to the event. This weekend was warm enough so that the precipitation fell in liquid form, and it was still troublesome enough, with slippery conditions in many motos on Sunday and only one set of motos on Monday. John Martin and the crew rerouted to avoid the nastier hills and still there was a lot of good racing. Sunday’s entries numbered slightly over 700 so there was definitely some pent-up demand for some dirt bikin’ action. The 250A class was early in the rotation on Sunday morning and the track was still relatively dry. Luke Peters pulled off a nice holeshot to grab the Motorex-sponsored cash. Haas grabbed a handful of throttle to take the lead quickly as the pack rounded the first few turns and headed into the whoops. Looking smooth out front on his YZ250, he held a rapid pace with Peters and Wentland duking it out over second in the first couple of laps. Peters dropped off the pace a bit as Wentland was able to concentrate on shortening the gap

to Haas. Jeremy Kress and Clay Chapiewski jumped up to the 3-4 positions. At the appearance of the white flag, Wentland had closed within a few bike lengths of Haas and was turning up the heat, and took over the lead shortly. Haas maintained second not too far back with Kress some ways back for third. Chapiewski ran across the line in fourth with Nick Jackson displacing Peters for fifth on the last lap. Kress surged to the front to nab the holeshot money in the next moto and maintained the lead for the next two laps with Wentland a bit back, and under pressure from Haas. Wentland managed to close on Kress and pounced for the lead at the halfway point in the moto, and went in for the win. Kress had Haas and Chapiewski not too far back and when Haas screwed up a bit late in the last lap

he secured second. Chapiewski was right there and took advantage of Haas’ miscue to grab third. Peters improved one position from his first moto to take fifth. Izaih Clark led the 65cc 7-11 class down the start straight and through turn one in the first moto. Josh Boaz soon was pressuring and was right behind as they completed the first lap with Dillon Nelson and Kaleb Carman giving chase. Boaz made the pass and with a nice ride held on for the win. Clark was just a few seconds back at the flag for a solid second-place. Nelson and Carman held steady for the distance to run three-four over Gavin Janovsky. Boaz jumped out front right away in moto two, in slippery conditions and began to build a considerable lead. Gavin Janovsky slotted into second and held tight with Nelson third and Clark in fourth. Boaz went on to take a huge win with Janovsky and Nelson crossing the finish line in the 2-3 spots. Jayden Clough took over fourth about mid moto and held on to the end over fifth-place Clark. Jeremy Kress and Scott Jendro were side-by-side into turn one as the Open A class was unleashed. Jendro lost the rear end and did a 360 low side in front of the pack, giving Kress the undisputed holeshot. The pack managed to avoid Jendro and he remounted in last, but in one piece. Kress experienced his own problem with the muddy track on the first lap and dropped way back in the order while Wentland inherited the lead with Haas and Chapiewski in tow. The order stayed the same to the flag with cautious riding necessary to maintain speed. Ryan Orres displaced Luke Peters on the last lap to round out the top five. Chapiewski pulled the holey in moto two and held on to the lead for the next two laps with Kress hot on his rear fender. Kress pulled into a half bike lead coming down the CYCLE USA, June 2013 41
big hill and Chapiewski tried to stuff him at the bottom. That didn’t work and Chapiewski went down and lost several positions, giving Kress a good lead to work with. Haas inherited second with Jendro and Wentland also getting by Chapiewski. The checkered flag solidified the order with Kress taking the win over Haas with Wentland making a late pass on Jendro for third. Chapiewski held fifth. In Open B, Benny Bloss, riding out of Missouri, led most of moto one only to fall late in the moto handing the win to Sam Wise. Tyler Skodras and Sam Peterson took second and third. Moto two featured a holeshot by Jerry Robin on his trusty 1980 vintage Honda 250, but Skodras displaced him in the lead shortly and went on for the win. Robin stayed close to hold second at the flag over Marcus Winch and Peterson while Alex Linders reprised his fifth place finish from moto one. Mason Marty led the 14-24C class through turn one but Chase Becker soon took control with Chris Friesth snaring second. Friesth slid out as they hit the last turn of lap one and dropped back. Becker went on to win over Devin Donovan and Marty with Cory Bruggeman in fourth. Moto two saw Becker jump out to an early lead which he held to the end. Marty and Donaho trailed at the flag with Tanner Hatch and Travis Bartylla fourth and fifth. M
C Motopark was running this past weekend with a two day Loretta Lynn Qualifier. The park was completely packed with riders from all over getting in their last chance to qualify. All the classes were stacked with fast riders, and the track was in pristine shape. The track at MC is something you have to see for yourself. A very demanding track with some room to stretch out, and lots of hills to launch off of as well. Today the weather was a factor several times, first with a nice soak in the morning then a tornado warning in the afternoon. Overall it did not slow things down much at all, just gave us enough water to keep on moving through-out the day. Big crowds, fast riders and a great track... yea, it was one of those special weekends. We caught the racing on Sunday, In +35, the first moto Brad Jerominski took the win followed by Andy Bowman and Jiri Brabenec. The second moto blasted off the line with Jerominski taking the

lead with Bowman and Norman Baker behind him. Coming up to the first jump Jerominski was holding onto the lead as Reid Law (MC Motopark’s very own) made the pass into third. Coming down the hill starting the second lap Jerominski was now joined by Law in second and Bowman right behind. Running up the sand section Jerominski crashed with Law moving up front with Bowman and Brabenec following right behind. Crossing the white flag, Jerominski was back in the game, chasing Brabenec. Over the hill they went with Jerominski setting up on the inside to move by Brabenec. Law had been building a large gap up front and held on for the win. He didn’t start the first moto leaving Club 57’s Jerominski with the overall win, followed by Brabenec and Bowman. College B/C was up next, and in the first moto Franklin, WI’s Justin Wolf took the win followed by Chase Ray (Texas) and Jacob Grafelman. The gates dropped on moto two with Wolf grabbing the holeshot followed by Kory Schocke and Timmy Baake. Coming over the first jump Jacob Wever went to the inside to take over third. Ray was on a mission after a bad start, coming down the hill on the second lap he flew all the way to second place right behind Wolf. Wever followed him, moving into third and was able to hold out till the end of the race. Crossing the finish Wolf took the win as well as the overall for the day. The Open Pro Sport race was insane with thirty-six riders lining up for action. In the first moto the win went to the always fast Iowa rider Jeremy Kress, leaving Evgeny CYCLE USA, June 2013

Mikhaylov (FL) and Cody Vanbuskirk behind him. The second moto got under way with the storm moving in. All thirty-six riders came barreling in to the first turn with no drama as Kress pulled out front on his Honda followed by Matthew Menzer (WI) and Ty Tyrrell. Nate Mcleese darted to the inside of everyone taking over second. Menzer held third before Vanbuskirk made the move over the first jump. Coming down the hill on the second lap things had changed. Jesse Wentland (MN’s fast guy) made his way into second ahead of Vanbuskirk. On the third lap Mikhaylov starting making a push and took over third. Things stayed this way for a couple laps before Mikhaylov made his move on Wentland. Coming across the finish Kress was able to lead the entire race taking the overall for the day. Mikhaylov took second overall and Wentland third with a fourth and third finish. The storm blew in right as the 65’s made their second lap, and it was pouring so hard they stopped all racing and sent them back to the line. Luckily it only rained for about ten minutes, but it rained hard. They lined back up to a nicely watered track, as
the sun returned. In the first moto Iowa’s Izaih Clark had taken the win followed by Cameron Davis (PA) and Cole Harkins (MI). They came off the line for the second moto with Wisconsin’s Dj Gritzmacher taking the holeshot followed by Patrick Murphy (IA) and Aaron Cottrell (OH) leading the hungry pack. Coming up the slick hill Clark moved into the lead followed by Harkins and Davis. Murphy battled back, holding onto fourth as Harkins went down in a corner. They were able to hold these position across the line giving Clark the impressive overall followed by Davis and Ruger Brown (IA) in third taking a 45. tainly an interesting one, going from wet and cold to hot and humid several times, I supposed that could just be attested to being in Illinois. The track out at Mount Carroll is amazing, and definitely needs to be on your to “rideâ€? list this summer. The qualifier went off without a hitch as the track crew worked flawlessly to keep things moving. With today being the last in the area everyone was out there giving it their best for the last chance to make it to the regionals this year. Good luck to those successful riders advance. Valley Raceway Beats Weather Crystal Falls, Michigan - May 11 By Cody Wills
W
ith everyone getting a late start to their spring riding because of an undecided Mother Nature, heading to Northern Michigan in early May seemed like it might be a no go a week before the first race at Valley Raceway in Crystal Falls, MI. Warm weather moved in just in time to make a great track even better heading into the weekend. Saturday morning had Mother Nature changing her mind once again as the temps dropped and the snow was flying, but it was time to go racing! The Women’s class had some fast gals show up. Chardae Tovar grabbed the holeshot and early lead with Kendra Randrup in tow. Tovar stretched a five second lead after lap one before having some trouble and going down. Randrup took over the lead with Kendra Tutt behind. Randrup had this one in the bag as Tovar climbed back to make it up to second, leaving Tutt in third and Angela Gravedoni fourth. Moto two had Tovar again grabbing the holeshot and leading for about a lap before Randrup took the lead, dropping Tovar to second. Seirra Heindl who had trouble on the line in moto one was running solid in third with Tutt close behind. That would be how they ended up, Randrup getting the overall followed by Tovar, Tutt, and Heindl. In +25B/C Dale Minkler got out front early ahead of Craig Harris and Kurt Debord. Minkler led the way around for just about two laps before the battle between Harris and De-
Open A on the line.

bord finally pushed forward dropping Minkler back to third. Harris held strong against the pressure from Debord. Harris didn’t crack keeping his KTM450 ahead of Debord’s Yamaha 250F for the win. Moto two had the battle continue where it left off. Harris out front again with Debord in tow. Minkler was in third early on. After staying close early in the first lap Debord began to lay back and check out Harris’ lines. With about two laps to go Debord pinned his 250F to catch up with Harris and made his move on him. “He was taking the outside sweeper so I jumped to the inside line and drag raced him to the next left hander,” said Debord about his pass for the lead. Harris did all he could to stay on him but he was just a couple bike lengths shy as Debord took the win and overall. Debord crossed the finish line with excitement with knowing his 2-1 had just got him the overall! “We're pretty good friends off the track and are both gunning for the championship this year.” Lance Dehne was dominate in +30B/C, getting both moto wins as the real battle was behind him. In the first moto battle was between Shawn Tovar and Greg Bink as they went back and forth before Bink found an edge for second. Matt Fisher worked his way up to fourth after having trouble early in the moto. In moto two after Dehne took off with the lead, Fisher had a better start and raced with Tovar and Bink. Jon Tyner also got in the mix, making it a four way battle for second. Tovar looked to be the guy but then a couple falls dropped him back to sixth. Fisher worked his way to second giving him second
overall with 4-2 scores. Bink (2-4) picked him up third as Tyner wrapped up fourth. Some standouts of the day included Kendra Randrup, who took it to the boys in 85Sr with a 1-1 matching her dominate performance in the Women’s class. Nick Randrup (Kendra’s brother) also was on it in the C classes. He got both motos in Open C and went 2-2 for second in 250C, riding very well. Wyatt Liebeck won both the 65cc and 85Jr
Craig Harris was fast in +25B/C, finishing second overall.

classes. Nate Laporte cleaned up in both 250A and Open A, winning all four motos. At the end of the day you couldn’t have asked for better track conditions. Oddly enough it came from a mix of rain, sun, snow showers, and excellent track prep. Mother Nature played each end of the spectrum, sunny to white out conditions, but the Valley crew did a perfect job with the track, and running a smooth program. Mother’s Day racing at Kellogg Kellogg, Minnesota - May 12 By Dusty Rose
M
otokazie treated all of the moms to chocolates as their sons and daughters prepared to race at this Mother’s Day race. This was the second round of the series, and what could be better than spending the day with family at the track. Open A’s Connor Ahlers, screeched out for the holeshot followed by James Carsten, Colin Jackson and Nick Carter. After the first lap, Ahlers settled into a comfortable lead. Carter made a pass on Jackson and took over third and they held those spots to the end. In moto two, three Honda riders battled through the whoops off the start, Colin Jackson from Lake City, MN won the challenge, with Ahlers right along side. Nick Carter from Cedar, MN settled into third. It was a sweet battle as the race went on. On the third lap Ahlers made his move, through the dirty dozen, and slid past Jackson. Jackson had some trouble and ended up with a DNF. After five laps, Ahlers grabbed first place with Carter and Carsten taking second and third. When the gates dropped and the Open B racers screamed out of the gates, Samuel Peterson from Northfield, MN ripped the holeshot. Jeffery Doege from Shakopee and Sean Castle from Faribault followed in the second and third. Peterson kept it pinned and settled into a nice lead as Castle strategized, and moved past Doege. At the start of moto two Peterson led the riders over the 120’ Kong with Doege, Zack Bell and John Weir from Eau Claire, WI giving chase. Weir found the gas and powered by Bell as Peterson rode a smooth race and sailed through the finish line first. Doege and Weir finished second and third. In the second race of the day, the Schoolboy class waited for the gates to drop. The engines roared, the rpms ramped up, and down went the gates as Walker Kruse had the right timing and crept by for the holeshot. Travis Prier from Elkader, IA kept Kruse in sight before making a pass in the first lap. Cody Wroe and Even Hill were mixing it up for third. As the race progressed, Wroe snuck up on Kruse and made a pass. The success only lasted for a few seconds; Wroe protected the inside on the next hairpin turn; Kruse went high to gain some speed. Coming out of the turn, Wroe made a defensive move and tried to block Kruse. Kruse cut down low and pinned it, flying by Wroe and never looking back. Prier made it to the finish line first with Kruse powering through for second and Wroe coming in third. The second moto began the same way with Kruse grabbing the holeshot by the skin

of his teeth. Prier made a quick pass on Kruse through the whoops section and sailed to a victory. Kruse captured second with Wroe once again crossing in third. Lincoln Trail’s Area Qualifier
Big classes filled the day, like here in the 450B start.
Casey, Illinois - April 6/7 By David Henry, Photos by Phyllis Blume www.phyllisblume.com
A
pril 6th and 7th marked the return of Loretta Lynn’s Qualifying racing to one of the longest running facilities in the state, Lincoln Trail Motosports. This weekend also marked the first time any qualifying race had been ran on the “Bomber” track. The crew at LTM had the facility in top-notch condition, and the racing all weekend was top notch as well. Close to 750 entries from twenty-one states plus Canada hit the track in hopes of securing themselves a spot in the North Central Regional to take place in June. The racing action was so good all weekend that a story could be written about each of the thirty-six classes that ran, but we will keep it to a few of those that were extra special.
Making his way back home to where it all started for him was Mattoon, IL racer Jace Owen. Owen has been through several changes in this off-season, but the results he was expecting at LTM were right on target. Owen sporting Honda CRF’s, was blazing fast all weekend and went 6 for 6 in 250A, 450A and Open Pro sport. During a post race interview he noted that he was excited about the change back to Honda, and feeling very comfortable on the bikes. He is definitely looking to be up front this year back at the Ranch. Supermini 1 saw fantastic racing with a three-way tie for the overall between Illinois racers Chase Sexton, Jayce Pennington and Michigan racer Ashton Hayes. The rider that really stole the show in this class was Michigan rider Joey Crown. Joey was out front in moto one, setting a blistering pace for the win. Coming home in second was Pennington, followed by Hayes and Sexton. Sexton had a lot
Jayce Pennington fights off Chase Sexton and Michigan’s #299 Ashton Hayes in the SuperMini class.
of spots to make up after a bad start to the moto, but fought hard all the way to the end and pulled off that fourth. The second moto saw Crown out front, but at about the halfway mark Crown went down hard and ended his day of racing. This left the door wide open for Pennington to capture and overall after his solid second place in moto one, but someone else had his eye on the moto win. Sexton was not about to let moto one ruin his second moto. Sexton had his Yamaha blazing and went on for the win. That left Sexton with a 4-1 and Jayce Pennington still had his eye on the overall as long as he could pull off another second. However, Ashton Hayes had his Suzuki singing and he was not about to let Pennington get around him. Pennington went on for a hard fought third place. In the end it was Sexton first overall with a 4-1, Hayes second with a 3-2 and Pennington third with a 23. College B/C 16-24 had several riders battling back and forth, but it was Missouri’s Benny Bloss on his Suzuki that would bring home the win with a 1-1 sweep. The battle for second was a three-way tie between the Suzuki of Wisconsin’s Cody Williams, Michigan’s Jeff Walker and Indiana’s Broc Gourley. The three would all end up with scores that added up to six, but it was Gourley on his KTM coming out on top with a 4-2 over Walker (3-3) and Williams’ score of 2-4. Rounding out the top five was Kentucky rider Kyle Durham. Speaking of Benny Bloss, he was part of another stacked class and that was Schoolboy 2, which can include 250F’s. Bloss was looking good in moto one with a second place finish, but had a few issues in moto two and finished sixth. Coming in second on the day with a reversal of Bloss’s 2-6 was Iowa rider Josiah Hempen. The rider that stole the show was Georgia rider Tommy Maxey on his Kawasaki. Maxey was on rails, and dominated going 1-1 on the day. CYCLE USA, June 2013 53
The Vet classes were pretty stacked too, as +35 class saw several previous top Loretta Lynn’s top finishers in it. Coming out on top for the day was none other than James Povolny. The Jeffersonville, IN rider went 1-1 on the day ahead of the Kawasaki piloted by local rider Dennis Dooley. Dooley was coming back from an injury and still looked strong. Rounding out the podium was Missouri rider Ronnie Ford. Ford powered his Suzuki to a 3-3 finish. All of the racing action for this qualifier was top notch, and several riders commented on how much they liked the “Bomber” track at Lincoln Trail. Racers Fight Mud at Gob Hill Atkinson, Illinois - April 28 By Kylie Kelsall
O
n Sunday WFO hosted the 3rd race of the season at Atkinson MotorsportsGob Hill in Atkinson Illinois. This race was supposed to be a National Hare Scamble in Plainview Illinois, but due to the excessive rain Plainview had to be postponed. The spring weather just isn't quite cooperating this year. Racing at Gob Hill you never know what to expect, some years it could be extremely dusty, others muddy and wet. This Spring we had a nice mix of both. The races consisted of steep hills, tight corners, large logs and a section where riders had to go through part of the lake. The slippery logs surely weren't giving out any favors, but the riders executed well and made it through. Most had a nice day racing against their friends competitive spirits. The 65 Beginner class started the day off on a good foot. At the start of the race Patrick Wessels (30) was in first, Easton Morgan second, and Lake Plowman third. They stayed consistent until the forth lap when Morgan slid into first where he stayed for the rest of the race, Wessels dropped to second and Evan Kellett moved up to third. Jacklyn Bowles wasn’t far behind Kellett where they battled for third the remainder or the race. Bowles came out on top and took third as Morgan took the win. The 65cc 7-11 class had a good race with Tommy Fortune Jr in first. He was the only 65 to complete a thirteen minute lap time. Blake Phelps and Conner Mabus both had a fourteen minute lap their first lap. Coming in for the third and final lap they were only nineteen seconds apart, and held their positions to

the end. The 85’s gave a close race between Tanner Whipple and TJ Nees. During the last lap they both had a 45 minute lap, but Whipple pushed ahead with the determination to win. Tanner Whipple, asked whether he liked woods racing or arenacross better said, “I like the woods racing better. Its a lot of fun and I have been doing it a lot longer.” Asked what he liked about Atkinson, “Riding through the lake and the tight woods was the most fun, while the big hill and slick logs were the most challenging.” The Supermini class had good racing as well. Cody Barnes had a first lap time of ten minutes, while most of his competitors were
about a minute off that. He was also the only Supermini rider to make four laps. Nolan Blaesing and Jacob McCarrens had a great battle before Blaesing worked past to capture the second place position right behind Barnes. In the Women’s class Randi Bailey took first place without a problem. She held great lap times and pushed herself to win. Kimi Gardner came in second, making two laps in the dust and mud. Autumn Franklin, Kristy Roland, and Susan Creek unfortunately did not finish, but all held on as long as they could. C class races started at 10am, and ran an hour and a half. The 201-Open C class had great riders all battling for first as Neil Irwin

grabbed the win. Colton Brough came in second while Jordan White claimed third. The 98-200 C riders had a nice battle for first between Matt McDonald and Colin Lyon. During the first lap McDonald had two minutes on Lyon, but by the next lap Lyon had matched McDonald’s time. Lyon pulled ahead by three min-
utes but was caught again by McDonald in the fifth lap. McDonald was triumphant in the end. Vet C had an even closer race between John Griffiths and Casey Rick. Griffiths just barely got the win with a six second lead. The B classes raced next with Logan Nelson in Open B, and a first lap time of thirteen minutes, same as his competitor Jarred Dodds, but by the second lap Nelson had pulled ahead by two minutes. Nelson kept at a gap on Dodds for the remainder of the race and took the win. Corey Purlee came in shortly after for third. The A group was the last of the bikes to race. Joey Fortune took first and was also the only A rider to make eight laps. Shea Dickson and Devon Fredrick bat-
tled for second, but in the end Dickson conquered and placed second. AA had some fast and close racing as Adam Bonneur took first over Nate Ferderer and Ryan Lenth. The last lap of the race the three guys only had about a minute between them. Quads wrapped up the day for us. In Quad C Matt Elliot took first, Scott Hoerr second, and Jeremy Carlyle third. B Quads had Scott McDaniels top the class. After a great day of racing we would like to give a huge thank you to the Enyeart family for letting WFO race at Atkinson Motorsports-Gob Hill. D16 Hare Scrambles Kick-off Lake Mills, Wisconsin - May 5 By Dave Hollub
A
ztalan Cycle Club became the first event for the 2013 District 16 Hare Scrambles season when the Beaver Cycle Club was forced to cancel their event due to a winter that just wouldn’t quit. Veteran Aztalan member Rollie Gleisner had an assistant this year in Mike Jazwiecki, and if anyone thought Gleisner was diabolical in finding the toughest tracks in the Azzie wilderness, Jazwiecki had a few tricks to add as well. The course had a great mix of MX track and tight woods to keep every racer challenged. The Women were first out and when the shotgun fired Tammy Flemming took a quick
lead only to have her daughter Sierra Dortch pushing her hard. Flemming went down shortly into lap three and Dortch jumped out front and never looked back. By the time Flemming was back up running Monica Jazwiecki had slipped past. Flemming fought back and soon was past Jazwiecki. For the second year in a row Dortch took the win ahead of Flemming while first time HS racer Jazwiecki finished third. In 65cc, Tyler Lueschow jumped out front at the start and led all the way to the finish. Brock Lueschow ran second all race with Loyal Prach holding on in third. Brady Tamborino led the 85cc class riders from shotgun blast to the checkers. Sam Wolf
Collin Buth was fourth in the B class.

started out in third, but was running second by the beginning of lap three. Wolf was able to keep Tamborino in site but couldn’t close in on him. Brady Lange started out in second but soon fell off the pace and dropped back in the field, leaving an opening for Chase Salter to move up from a back of the pack start to finish in third. Travis Shelton ran away with the 50cc class, eventually crossing the finish well ahead of second place Rex Valek. Max Ahlman was third and James Clark finished fourth. Once again The Regional Grand Championship (RGN) se-
ries held their Hare Scrambles leg at Aztalan, and both John Stewart and Paul Philbrick were here to resume their long lasting battle for the title. Stewart had the lead until he fell on the third lap, breaking off his rear brake pedal. Philbrick had been right on Stewart’s rear wheel to this point now charged ahead and forged a lead that would turn into a two minute winning margin at the end of seven laps. Stewart held on to finish second. Jon Wilson held third all race while Jack Kainz fought his way up from a seventh place start to cross the finish in fourth. In the +50 class Nick
Moeller started out his season with a start to finish win. Steven Sorge got around Bradley Kortbein on lap two to settle into second. Kortbein fell back into fourth soon after Sorge got by him, but by lap four was able to pass Charles Buse to clinch third. At the start of the C class, thirty-five riders turned into a battle between first time hare scramblers Aaron Koch and Austin Madison, as Madison jumped out front. Koch fought back from a bad start and by the time lap one was finished, he was in third just five seconds behind Madison. Aaron Sirkl was wedged between them in second but soon was out of contention as he had problems. Koch was out front by the end of lap two and starting to open up a gap until he stalled his bike on lap five leaving him two seconds behind Madison at the scoring point. Madison was able to open up a fourteen second lead by the end of lap six only to cross the finish less than two seconds behind Koch as the checkers came out. Chris Quillman finished third just in front of Trey Waage.
Koch “this was my first Hare Scramble and I loved it. It was a lot of fun and totally different than riding moto. My start was good, the electric start on the KTM kicked right in and I got out in about seventh or eighth. I was able to pick up a lot of places on the first lap and think I was in the lead around the third or fourth lap. I stalled it once and Austin got by me. I charged after him and eventually got around him in time to win. I am going to do some more, but will definitely be getting some handguards before next time. Thanks to Rob’s Performance/ KTM for helping me out.” Paul Philbrick wasn’t finished after winning the RGN class, and when +40 took off he was out front except for briefly loosing the lead on lap seven as he stopped to refuel. Once back on the track Philbrick was in the lead soon. Robert Raduenz passed Erik Shafer to settle into second place to the finish. Karl Lueschow got by Steven Sorge on lap four, then passed Shafer on lap seven to finish the race in third. Anthony Tamborino bat-

tled his way through the class and crossed the checkers in fourth ahead of Buck Benson. Another great battle was brewing in B class as Scott Ryan jumped into a quick lead only to get passed by Collin Buth. Ryan held on in second for the next three laps before getting passed by Kelly Rickgauer and Peter Jazwiecki on lap six. By lap nine Dylan Kobel had fought back from a last place start to slip past Rickgauer, into second. Kobel was not finished charging and on lap twelve was out front by about ten seconds. Jazwiecki got past Buth on lap thirteen, and thinking he was out front he backed off and worked on staying ahead of Buth to the finish. Kobel, “I ran B last year in District 23 but District 16 is a lit-
tle closer and we know a bunch of people here, so I raced here today. It is a lot of fun to be here and hang out with a bunch of friends again. The course was pretty cool, not a lot of mud which is not what I was hoping for. I like racing in the mud. The race went good even though I crashed five or six times. I accidentally hit the gas when I started the bike and I ended up starting at the back of the pack. I think I finally got out front the last four or five laps. Thanks to Amsoil Synthetics, 2Brothers Honda of LaCrosse, Decal Works, and my family.” Josh Marescalco didn’t get the best start in the A class, but by the end of lap two he had moved up from sixth into the lead. Marescalco then put on a CYCLE USA, June 2013

pace that would carry him to the finish fourteen laps later with a huge lead. While Marescalco was mixing it up with the guys in AA, Heath Drone was busy defending his second place from a hard charging Bill Menzel. Menzel was in second by the end of lap five. Drone held on and despite a drop to fifth for the middle portion of the race, finished the last laps in third. Mark Sheppard was fourth with Jeff Schmidt finishing fifteen seconds back. In the AA class, John Strangfeld grabbed the holeshot and then settled into a fast pace which soon put a comfortable lead on the rest of the pack. Pete Laubmeier held on in second
until lap seven when Eric Mischler slipped past. Laubmeier kept a steady pace keeping Mischler in sight until the final lap when he was able to charge past to clinch second. Robert Kau also managed to get by Mischler just before the finish. Later Strangfeld described his race, “Today was perfect, I got off to a good start. I got the holeshot so I never got any dirt or rocks. The track was laid out awesome as it always is. As the day went on more ruts developed and some berms formed. It just kept getting tackier and tackier. The mudholes held up good, I was surprised there was a big one in the back that stayed hard on the bottom so it never got too

I would like to thank Parts Unlimited, Moose Racing, 100% Goggles, Factory Effects, UFO, Wiseco, Pirelli Tires, and CV4. They all contribute and are a big part of my racing and work with Parts Unlimited. Also thanks to everyone for showing up, and the club for the great track they put together every year for us.” If today’s racing is an indication of the season to come it will be an exciting Hare Scrambles series in District 16 this year.

Megacross Racing Begins, Finally! Mendota, Illinois - May 11th By Josh Rud, www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

n May 11th the 2013 Megacross season got underway after battling some flooding rains on the first attempt. Tonight was unseasonable cold, which I’m sure will be missed once the summer heat is bearing down. Nevertheless, jackets and gloves were in order as the racing got kickedoff. The track was great shape as always, freshly built-up and groomed to perfection. All the classes were packed, giving way to some great racing and a good show for the spectators. One of the cool things about Megacross, you can always count on a good turn-out, great racing, and a quick, well run program. Chase Sexton was out at the track tonight putting on a show as he rode flawlessly in all of his classes. In Supermini he got out front to an early lead and never looked back. Behind him came Anthony Wallace and Aiden Kaiser. As Sexton started pull away, Dylan Boyd on the Kawasaki made his move on Kaiser after the straight-away. Going to the inside heading for the whoops he was able to get around him and make it stick. They crossed the line with Sexton taking the win, followed by Wallace and Boyd. Sexton also took the win in 85Sr with Wallace and Kaiser rounding out the top three. 85Jr was another great race to watch tonight with Kaile Williams jumping out front followed closely by Jonah Geistler and Austin Link. Coming around the second turn Link
grabbed the inside line to get around Geistler. After the first jump Link came charging back to take over second as the battle continued. Meanwhile the hard charging Shawn Thompson slipped past Link to take over third as Williams was pulling away out front. Flying down the straight Thompson went to the inside of Geistler to take over second, only to go down through the bowl turn, allowing Link to move back into third. Crossing the finish Williams earned the big win with Geistler and Link crossing next to round out the top three after an exciting race. 14-24 was full of action tonight as twenty-three fast and eager riders packed into the gates, all ready to prove something on the Megacross track. Charging down to the first corner Skyler Harkless edged out David Davis and Ryan Robinson for the holeshot. Travis Ward out on his 125 was flying from the outside and snuck up into third as everyone bunched up around the hairpin. Brian Krohn was on a mission as he went outside
through first set of whoops to take took over the lead with Harkless and Ward chasing him. Coming into the chicane before the finish Ward came in hot on the inside to take over second from Harkless with his sights set next on Krohn. On the third lap Tony Spizzirri got around Harkless for third, joining the hunt for victory. Everyone was staying really close when on the last lap Krohn came into the berm a little too fast and fell over the top giving up the lead. With three turns left before the checkers Ward took the lead followed by Spizzirri and Robinson. Krohn got back up as fast as he could, finishing in fourth. Later that night 250A was up to the line with a great race in store. Off the gate drop Drew Yenerich shot out front with Jody Walker and Tom Hofmaster dragging bars hard. Walker got snagged up and lost his line letting Maxx Malatia take over third as they rounded the second turn. Coming over the last table top; Hofmaster got on the gas to beat Yenerich in the drag race to

the next turn, going to the inside to take over the lead. Going into the same section on the next lap Malatia get around Yenerich. After two laps Malatia made his move going side by side with Hofmaster over the jump before the S-curve. Malatia sealed the pass and took over first. Hofmaster and Malatia were battling all day during the heat races with Hofmaster winning the 250A heat race while Malatia won the Open A heat. Yenerich was charging hard and got around Hofmaster on the next lap and began gaining ground on Malatia. He was on his back tire coming across for the white flag, but was unable to get a pass in before the end of the race. Malatia swept the A classes tonight with a win in Open A as well. 250C was another eventful race with twenty-four riders filling the start. From the gate drop Brett Guffey shot out front followed by Justin Peterson and Travis Symmonds. Peterson quickly went inside to take the lead from Guffey, just ahead of Colten Burk. Coming through the hills nearing the finish line of the first lap Austin Beaty had passed Burk and Guffey for sec-
ond. On the third lap Burk charged back inside of Guffey for third. Unfortunately he got pushed up high into the next turn and stalled his bike. Coming over the finish line Peterson held on for the win with Beaty and Guffey close behind, making for another great race. In Open C, Peterson led the way once again. They came across the line with Peterson taking the win ahead of Jono Mandelke and Burk. The B classes were wild tonight between Open and 250. In 250B, Mark Marincic came out with the holeshot with Jacob Wever and Nick Inman right behind him. The rest of the race actually never changed with all three riding as hard as they possibly could. Open B was the last race of the night with everyone lining up, ready to get out there for battle. Off the gate drop Marincic took the lead, this time with Inman right behind him and Wever back in the action in third. Once again the order would go unchanged as Inman was right on the back tire of Marincic the entire race. Megacross continued on P65 CYCLE USA, June 2013

This means faster trails and the need to pay attention to arrows since there are multiple trails available. Overall A winner Nick Queen said he had a plan to be smooth and stay focused on staying on the trail. If he could do that he knew that could give him a good score. His plan paid off and he had the second fastest time through the test. Test two showed with more single track and more technical trails. This test offered a great mix of flowing single track and an introduction into a few rock garden sections. Many riders were talking after about how much fun they were having up to this point, and how great the weather was. That would all start to change. Test three was more great single track, more rock gardens, and mother nature was heating up. You could really feel the humidity kicking in, and it appeared to start to take its toll. Many riders hadn’t had to compete in the heat so it was really wearing them down. Third overall for the day John Roth noted the difference in attitude from the start of Test three to the end. Everyone was “geeked” up Jared Hall doing his best to chase down his father, Jay.

and still excited about the day. But at the start of Test four riders were laying on the ground trying to rest. Test four was more open and flowing, but the signs of tired riders were showing up. Riders weren’t attacking the trail anymore and many appeared to be in “get back to the pit mode”. Two riders that were still charging hard were the father and son team of Jay and Jared Hall on their Halls Cycle Husky’s. This is Jared’s first season of enduros, but he has grown up racing Hare Scrambles since he was a very young boy. Many know Jay Hall from Halls Cycles, and everyone knows he’s been a top rider for many years. But as happens to all “experienced” riders, the young guns come after them. This time its son chasing father and it was pretty awesome to hear the two of them talking about each section and seeing the excitement in Jared that he led dad for a long time. But even cooler to see the hidden smirk on Jay’s face when asked who checked out of the test first, dad got son in this test. Test five was the final of the day and included the infamous waterfall section. For those of you that haven’t ridden this event it’s hard to give you a true verbal description of this section, but we’ll try. You ride along a creek and are thinking that looks pretty neat. Then you see the arrows just turn into the creek and there’s a huge drop in right into the creek. As you drop in and make a hard right you see waterfalls and spectators. There are about 4 or 5 drops (they become a blur as you ride down) and the drops are about 3-5 feet high. You are riding on wet rock, there’s water running down it. At this point you either commit and navigate your way down jumping off each waterfall or you panic and walk your bike down, both ways work but one is way faster and spectator friendly. This test had most people in survival mode but one rider still charging was Dave Edsall. Well Dave was still charging until he took a wrong line in a creek and ended up underwater. Dave’s good ride was put on hold while he got the water out and was finally able to get going again, many many minutes down. At the end of the day there were many tired riders but also many smiles. It’s always great at enduros to see riders barely able to walk because they are so tired but they have the biggest smile and are talking about how great the event was. This year many District 17 riders took home plaques including the Overall Champion plaque. Ryan Moss picked up his second win of the season. Moss, “I stuck to my plan all day, but in test five I had a get off where I landed directly on my right elbow. It was one of those where you get up and think your day is done. I tried to take off but had to
pull over and hope the felling would come back in my arm. I really thought that mistake would cost me but I was lucky I had a good ride in the morning and was able to get the win by eight seconds. Thanks to the club for a great event and thanks to all my sponsors; Woodstock KTM, Moose Racing, EarthX Batteries, Acerbis, Bell Helmets, Braking, Enduro Engineering, EVS, FMF, Midwest Mountain Engineering, Pirelli, Spectro, Sunstar, and my family.”

Megacross from P63 I spoke with Nick Inman later that night, he has been racing exclusively motocross races lately and hasn’t been to a stadium race in years. Asked how things felt out there, “It's was fun. I just didnt get the starts I wanted or the finished, but other than that it was a lot of fun. I'm going to have to start racing more stadium races in the future for sure.” The night went right along, smooth as ever with such a large turn-out.
