N
ew Hartford’s season opener was a cold one, that being an extreme understatement. Saturday started out with blizzard-like conditions on my drive to New Hartford with temperatures ranging in the mid-30’s, very windy (25 mph gusts) and wet. Thankfully the rain/snow stopped before I arrived at the track and regardless of the weather, riders were there waiting to get the second district race under their belts. Track workers worked extremely hard to make racing the best they could with the conditions. With mud being the great equalizer, bikes were dumped throughout the day. No one was a “take it all” leader until they actually crossed that finish line! The first races off the gate were the 65Sr and 85Sr classes. It was the battle of the KTMs in 65Sr with Drew Lubka #70 and Ryley Helle #51 competing for the win. On the 85’s it was five riders battling with “Kaws” and “Yamis.” Haylee Peterman #57 took the 85Sr holeshot as Lubka took it for the 65 class. Helle pulled the win for first moto and Lubka the second moto which put him first overall for the day.
Peterman dominated the race and took first overall in 85Sr with Cody Barnes second and Coleton Rilling in third respectively on their Kawasakis. The biggest class of the day was 250C with fourteen riders on the gate. Again with mud being the great equalizer, you couldn’t begin to guess the outcome of the races. Dustin Ellingson #221 and Mario Azua #814 battled for the first moto holeshot with a tight pack right behind them. All bikes made it through the first corner into the rollers until Austin Wise slipped into the second roller and lost it, narrowly missing getting ran over by the rest of the pack. Michael Lohrer took the lead on his Kawasaki with Cody Ely in second and Brian Ehlers third. Second moto was a bit rougher on Lohrer as he dropped to sixth taking him to third overall as Ely walked away with first, and Ehlers with second overall. At the end of the first motos track conditions improved, and made for better second motos with faster speeds and more air. The most admirable classes of the day were filled with the 50cc riders. The track was like climbing mountains for them and nothing came easy for them. Their races were moved to the end of the race order to hopefully

give them a better chance to make it through their motos. With bikes going down right and left not one of these little guys

The second gate drop had 50Jr Zachry Adelmund taking the holeshot, giving it all he had on his Cobra as Clay Fishback, Kaiden Knaack, and Will Fingalsen were in pursuit. Fingalsen worked his way through and made it to first place in the moto and then for the overall win with Adelmund taking second first moto, but falling to fourth in the second moto for third place overall as Knaack locked in second place overall. In 50Sr, #26 Paxton Jobe had a strong holeshot and led throughout both races to take the overall for his class. He was followed by Brennen Trimble and Eli Hoversten, who swapped third and second positions both motos with Trimble taking second overall at day’s end. By the end of the day the track was in good shape, and then prepped and ready for Sunday’s race. With weather conditions improving, Sunday had a larger turnout, and New Hartford put on a great race. New Hartford doesn’t cancel races due to a bit of adverse weather, and this weekend was no exception. Special Vet class at Hixton, June 5th. Help spread the word about a fun class that is being added to the regular lineup at the June 5th Hixton, WI motocross race by CMJ Racing. A +35, 2 stroke 125cc only class will be added. No Quad classes at Sunset Ridge MX May 28/29. A change to the schedule has made it a non-quad weekend. All other motorcycle and mini classes will run as usual. Chris Carr to appear in West Bend, WI. Carr, the seven-time American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Grand National Champion and first person to ever achieve 350mph on a motorcycle, will appear at West Bend Harley-Davidson on June 2 as part of his 2011 Farewell To Flat Track tour. Carr’s appearance coincides with his participation in the Dairyland Classic dirt track race the following evening in Plymouth. In 27 years of Grand National dirt track competition, Carr has collected seven championships, seventy-eight victories, and over two hundred podium finishes, second-best in history in each category. His ties to Wisconsin date back to his rookie year, when a motorcycle dealership in Racine sponsored him. Carr recalls, “I still have a lot of friends in the area from my rookie season, and I hope to see them when I swing through on my Farewell tour”. The Chris Carr Farewell to Flat Track Tour social will be held at West Bend Harley-Davidson on Thursday, June 2, from 6-8pm. We have had some great weather but totally uncooperative weekends so far in April. As I type this I’m watching the snow come down and finding it way too late in the year for this kind of weather. This has been the longest winter I remember. We have gotten in a couple of nice road riding days but our days in the dirt have been severely restricted. Let’s hope the rest of the season cooperates better. Speaking of crazy and unpredictable the supercross season so far has been nothing but surprises at every event. I continue to be amazed at James Stewart, one race he is by far the fastest the next he is in panic mode and making stupid moves. As I look back on all the seasons of MX and SX I can’t remember a racer that has been in so many crashes and taken out so many others. But when he is out front he still knows how to leave the

pack behind. He is definitely the most on and off racer that I have seen in many years. You can already see the improvement in Team KTM with Roger Decoster at the helm. This has been one of the best seasons that we as fans have seen in many years. It has also been refreshing to see the Yamahas and Hondas give the Pro Circuit boys a run for their money this year in the lites class. Barcia, Tomac, Sipes, Wilson, Hansen have some great duels going. This season has been more about the racers’ abilities than about sheer horse power. Makes for much better racing and more fan excitement. I also had the opportunity to go down to Texas this winter for the Oakhill race. There was some incredible racing there. The talent pool coming up is not lacking by any means. The top and A and B class racers had lap times that were very close. Our local racers made a good showing and the Oldenburgs did a great job of keeping the facility in shape the entire week. If you have never had the chance to take in one of the National Amateur Championship races put it on your to do list. The top racers at these events really put on a good show. On the local scene we have held a couple of our early races, but most disciplines will be hosting season openers in the month of May. Our membership numbers are a little bit ahead of last year’s at this time. We are very
close with the online sign up program, hopefully it will be running by May. One of our promoters is working on a new facility south of the Metro area and we are hoping that it will go through. He is close to having all the necessary approvals. That is about it for current business. Once the season is in full swing and the snow is gone it will get busier. Sunset Ridge MX, to Hold Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser. Pink will be the color at Sunset Ridge MX on June 17th as supporters head out on a 1.8 mile walk around the motocross track. The idea originated through track owner/promoter Bob Pistole after a conversation around track staff shirts being pink. “I just got to thinking maybe pink shirts are a good idea, but let’s take it one step further and make it more meaningful, maybe a “track walk” for breast cancer awareness.” On June 17th, following the Loretta Lynn Youth Regional practice sessions, Sunset will be holding a Track Walk with net proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer Research. At 5pm walkers will be lined up to walk the track. Track guides will be available

T
he first round of the Stoney Lonesome MC championship Harescramble Series was held near Columbus, Indiana at the notorious club property. Significant rainfall along with several competing events brought a lot of speculation regarding the expected rider turnout. A last minute reschedule of another weekend event due to rainfall helped bolster the turnout and create a very exciting day for the riders as well as the large turnout of spectators.

The PeeWee race course was significantly changed late on Saturday due to the constant rainfall that occurred in the days leading up to the event. The eleven racers were treated with the infamous powerline start and the star spangled banner prior to launching into the woods. The course consisted of areas to open up the little bikes and clear the mud from the tires that were collected from the super tight switch backs near a swampy section. In the PeeWee Injector class, it was apparent the young Brody Smith had something to prove. Smith took off from the beginning and never looked back completing eight laps with second place, Isaac Mull completing six. This was not only an impressive victory, it was Smith’s first victory at Stoney Lonesome MC in many years of trying.
The PeeWee Premix race was a closer battle with Ethan Sowder and Louden Feltner going back and forth lap after lap. The jumping up and down and cheering from friends and family could be seen throughout the course. It came down to the last 100 feet of the course where lapped traffic allowed Sowder to hold on for the victory. The Mini race started slightly late due to additional time allotted to clearing the PeeWee course of the straggling riders. The field included forty riders all wondering how the race would shake out on the three mile loop. The Super Mini class has changed from last year with several top riders moving up to the big Bikes as well as last years 65cc undefeated champion, Vincent Smith, moving up skipping the 85cc class. Jaden Smith (no relation to Vincent) not only moved up from the 85cc class, he absolutely dominated the field during the race and landed his very first victory at the Stoney. The battle for second onward developed between Colton Wilkes, Justin Huser and Vin-

cent Smith. Wilkes held second until the last lap where Vincent Smith was able to overtake him. Wilkes and Huser followed through the gates shortly after. Eric Douglass put the hammer down in the 85cc class with Tate Guerrettaz close behind in hot pursuit. Douglass successfully held his margin throughout the race completing six laps. Dawson Dunnuck was a distant third, only completing five laps. Drew Rainey came in strong on the first lap of the 65cc class with Cameron Lee and Langdon Feltner following close behind. A few struggles here and there by some riders allowed for the smooth and consistent riding of Lee to pay off. Lee won with a 2:10 margin over Logan McNeill. Feltner followed in third trailing McNeill by 2:20 The Big Bike race had 108 riders all fighting for the holeshot of their respective class. Of those, five riders eventually finished all seven laps with the scoring team surviving 435 potentially mud covered barcode scans. Several new names showed up for the event which was offering a $1000 purse to the top five AA riders, Lap one saw Chris Bach in the lead of the race, turning a 11:54 lap time. Jeff Cregg followed right on Bach’s rear tire with Anthony Wagler riding in third. At the end on the second lap, Bach still had the lead with
Cregg falling back due to apparent fuel pump issues. Wagler still owned third place, but with a 1:19 disadvantage. Derick Vehling was ripping through the course - still in fourth place, and trailing by 2:05. Andy Cregg was giving it everything on the course - and it was paying off - moving from eleventh to fifth place, trailing by 0:19. The biggest mover on the second lap was Nicolas Montani, heavy on the throttle able to move up from number 90 to number 65 overall. With Cregg out of the race, Bach appeared to be cruising in the lead, doing his best to ensure the lead didn't change for the remainder of the event. Wagler kept a cool head and staked a claim on second place. Meanwhile Vehling held onto third place and Andy Cregg came through the checkpoint in fourth place only 0:02 separation between the number four spot and the third place rider. In fifth, Derek Spangler knew the throttle had to stay open if there was any chance of eliminating that 0:18 disadvantage. Bach kept the lead at the checkered flag, actually opening the lead on the second place Wagler. Cregg, Vehling and Spangler rounded out the top five overall positions. In the end it was a good race, yet there was only one leader, with Chris Bach controlling the field throughout the race, with an average speed of 20.45 MPH.

incoln Trail Motosports hosted a Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Championship Qualifier April 1st-3rd. Riders from twenty-three states and Canada gathered at LTM to participate in the North Central Area Qualifier. The weekend was full of non-stop action with over 780 entries. It all got started on Friday with riders practicing, some getting tuned up, others hitting the refined LTM track for the first time. Riders ranged in age from 4 year old Eston Ward of Whitestown, IN to the most mature rider, Gary Peak from Marshall, IL., at the age of 64. Saturday and Sunday was host to some great racing action with 250C Stock, Supermini 1, Schoolboy 1 and Schoolboy 2 all having over 35 participants. The 250B stock class was the largest of the weekend with over 40 participants. Cole Thompson from Ontario Canada took the overall win. While he swept both motos for the overall, Oklahoma’s Colt Nichols finished runner up in both motos. The young hotshot from Indiana, Dakota Robins put his KTM across the line in third both motos, ahead of Kentucky’s Donald Alford in the first moto. In the second moto Danville, IL’s Dakota Blakeney improved on his first moto fifth for fourth, and fourth overall. Amateur Phenom Justin Bogle from

Cushing, OK. put in a great ride with uncontested wins in the 250A and 450A classes on Saturday and the Open Pro Sport class on Sunday.

Another fast, and packed class was the Schoolboy1 (12-16) B/C class. Thirty-nine riders started the first moto, and no one could beat Ohio’s Aaron Plessinger. IL’s Zachery Loehr gave it his all and finished second, impressive as the class had riders from eleven states competing. Finishing third was Wisconsin’s Andy Kost. In the second moto, the top riders all made their way to the front once again... this time, Kost held the edge as the moto ended to finish second behind Plessinger, while Loehr finished third. While many of the top spots were filled by riders from out of state on Sunday, one class that was captured by a local was the 85cc (9-11) Mod class on Sunday. The top five spots were all held by riders from different states, with our own Chase Sexton (LaMoille, IL) sweeping both moto wins for the overall.... leaving no doubt that he is well on his way to another outstanding season. The track held up well all weekend, and the event was a huge success. bars. At the checkered Baggett took the win with Wharton second and Honda rider Darryn Durham third. In the second heat series point’s leader Geico Honda rider Justin Barcia wasted little time getting to the front with Kawasaki rider Dean Wilson and Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes battling. Sipes and Wilson traded paint early with Sipes in second most of the race, but a mistake handed second to Wilson late. In the Last Chance Qualifier it was Tyler Futrell taking the win with Matt Lemoine holding the last transfer to the main. In the first 450cc heat Ivan Tedesco looked like he had jet fuel in his bike with a holeshot. Working up was Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto and James Stewart, on the move from the back of the pack. Stewart put on an amazing charge making an aggressive charge on Villopoto bringing the crowd to their feet and in the next corner made his move under Tedesco taking the lead and win. At the flag Stewart was first with Villopoto second and Tedesco third. In the second Supercross heat Rockstar Suzuki defending champion Ryan Dungey made it look easy taking the win wire to wire. Behind Dungy the rider on the move was Trey Canard who worked his way through the pack for second ahead of Davi Millsaps. In the Last chance qualifier Yamaha rider Nick Wey took the win with Bobby

ecord high heat welcomed the fans to the Edwards Jones Dome in St Louis, Mo. With temperatures in the 80’s it felt like we should be going to an outdoor national instead of a Supercross. Still, as expected, the fans poured in to see the stars and the best points race in the history of 450cc Supercross. Hot off two wins, American Honda rider Trey Canard set the fastest qualifying time of the night with Yamaha rider James “Bubba” Stewart second fastest. If you have never been to a Supercross, make plans to go it is a true show and in places like St Louis the time in the pits is worth the price to get in. There is just so much to do you have to see it for yourself! In the first 250cc heat race Kawasaki rider Blake Baggett took the holeshot who looked great the whole race, taking the win. Geico Honda rider Blake Wharton hung with Baggett leading the first three laps but he started to feel the heat from Kawasaki rider Matt Lemoine. Just when it looked like it was going to be a close race Baggett put in a blazing lap gapping Wharton as Lemoine who looked to be making his move came up short on a jump and went over the James Stewart may not win the championship, but he’s definitely back to his competitive pace.
Kiniry second. The Asterisks Medical Gas Card went to the hard charging Kawasaki ride of Cody Gilmore. In the 250 main event Blake Baggett took the holeshot, but it only lasted briefly with Justin Barcia moving to the front with Ryan Sipes in tow. These two riders traded
spots and paint but in the end Barcia took the win with Sipes second. Third went to Baggett. The battle for fourth between Dean Wilson and Blake Wharton was also intense with Wilson knocking Wharton off the track to make the spot stick. In 450 Supercross it was Tedesco again
taking the holeshot with Ryan Dungy second and Stewart third. On the first lap Stewart moved past Dungy for second. On the second lap Stewart passed Tedesco for the lead and then it was welcome to “Bubbacross” as Stewart went on to take the win! Dungy moved past Tedesco into second and did match the pace of Stewart. Next past Tedesco was Chad Reed and Villopoto. Reed ran third until he got caught on a tough block kicked out in the track letting Villopoto by for third. Reed finished fourth with Canard fifth. That means the top five in the series finished top five in this race! Villopoto only has a five point lead over Dungy and the top five are all within 20 points, with three rounds left this could be the best finish of a Supercross series in history!
Minnesota’s Ryan Dungey is one of four riders still in real contention this season.

tateline MX has joined forces with the AMA and District 17 so racers can patriciate in the 2011 Stadium Series. A very welcoming rider turnout, a summer-like day, and a newly designed track, had everyone excited for the season opener. Despite Friday's rain, Stateline MX promotor Nick Schoenhard and the track crew had the track in pretty good shape after working on it all day. The Quads were the first classes up to the gate, in Quad A, Schoenhard grabbed the holeshot in the eight rider field. Unfortunately, he lost the lead in the whoops section, giving the win to Jacob Conroy. Dillian Boeke finished second ahead of Casey Gerke, Jacob Howald and Ryan Ellingson. In the main, Schoenhard again grabbed the holeshot, but Boeke was bar to bar with Schoenhard till he took over the lead. Next it was Conroy putting pressure on Schoenhard from third. In the last lap, Boeke stalled into a corner. This opened the door for everyone as Schoenhard took the win followed by Conroy, Trent Venhuizan, Brian Perteete, and Ryan Ellingson to round out the top five.
Alyssa Haling finished third in the Women’s class.

Eddie Norred, Jr. ran off with both 80 Open motos. In the first moto, Alex Oerkfitz got the holeshot, but was soon passed by Norred, who secured the win, followed by Jordon Nelson and Oerkfitz. Norred led the field in moto two with Oerkfitz second and Nelson in third. Kyle Nelson won both motos in Supermini. Each moto had the same results as Logan Skaggs secured second, Nick Wallace third, and Jimmy Epifanio was forth. In the Open A main, JR Garrett grabbed the holeshot. Holding onto the lead thru the first lap, Garrett spun out in a corner, leaving Tommy Hofmaster an opening to take the lead. Garrett quickly recovered before Andy Thyberg was able to grab second. Brian White, Broc Pagni, and Matt Hammond were trading positions, all fighting for forth. A couple laps later with Hofmaster still out front, Garrett and Thyberg were side by side heading thru the whoops, when Thyberg lost it and went over the bars. Hofmaster took the win followed by Garrett, White, Hammond, and Pagni. In the always exciting 250B main, Malaci Messenger led the nine rider field around the first turn. Following was Erik Utech, Jody Walker, and Kyle Nelson leading the class. Messenger kept the lead with Utech holding on to second, while there was a four way battle for third between Walker, Cohen Robinson, Nelson and Skaggs. After swapping positions in the final lap, Robinson secured third followed by Nelson in forth, and Walker in fifth. It was refreshing to see everyone back together, doing what they love! Hopefully this is just the beginning of an outstanding season! Results: Women: 1. iders woke to snow on the ground during practice on Saturday but the track was in perfect condition. Sunday, with temperatures hovering in the upper 20’s, quad riders bundled up and came out to race the first race of the season at Motocity Raceway in Staples, MN. In the atv world, many spend their winter months tearing down, rebuilding, making engine and other changes to their quads so that they are geared up for the new season to come. For many, the first race of the season is also the first time being on their quad and getting a feel for the changes they made over the winter or just simply getting back into the thought process and mind set for racing. Not to mention, regaining your endurance and having your body adapt to racing again after a long winter off. Its anyone’s guess how they will do and how their quad will do that first race. Some will have a great first race and be very happy with the performance of the machine and themselves. Others will not have the same luck. Major machine failure or crashing is not how you want your first time out to go, but in the world of racings, one just never knows what will happen. The “good� came to many as they successfully completed the race and placed in the top finishing positions in their class. Shannon Friesen, our Canadian rider, with daughter Ashley pulled out front in the Women’s class today. They clinched first and second respectively. The

“good� continued to the Quad +25 class as Trevor Fjosne riding his Yamaha was able to take the podium win for the day, while his competitors also had good days and all finished their races. +30 rider David Gordon from Bagley, MN also had a good day, taking first place in both motos ahead of Jason Friesen and Zeb Kittelson. The “bad� found a few riders who started out great, pulling holeshots, or leading races before motor failure, crashing or simply losing their mind set. For these individuals, who shall remain nameless, it was great to know that they had given it their all. And finally, the “ugly�. For these few riders, today’s first race was not kind to them. In the UTV class, which started last year and is continuing to grow in numbers of participants, it was an ugly day for Claude Leaym and Jake Powell. Claude was unable to finish the first moto, but this also shot him down and he received a DNS. Jake Powell, racing his Yamaha ended up receiving two DNS’s for the day leaving him wondering about what the future brings to the table. JT Sleyster racing in the 450 Production B class was
stoked about his first race. However, earning to DNS’s for the day also was not what he expected. Never-the-less, all of the riders that encountered the “ugly� were not discouraged, but inspired to make their changes and come back stronger than ever at the next quad race. Perron on Fire at Cold Motokazie MX Opener Kellogg, Minnesota - April 17 By Jamie Theis
It was a cold, blustery morning; and a long winter of heavy snow had added lots of moisture to the dirt at Kellogg Motocross. The track was in great condition, tacky and moist, perfect for Motokazie’s District 23 season opener. The racers and families that braved the cold morning winds, were rewarded with an afternoon of sunshine and some great racing. The Open A class provided some exciting action as Nick Jackson of Zumbrota, MN, returned home from the AMA Supercross East rounds. Nick took the holeshot and the thunder for the first moto, leading every lap with the young Joe Perron of
Elko, MN, close at his heels. In the first lap it was Nick, Perron, Josh Sorensen of Zumbro Falls, Ryan Orres of Hastings, and Colin Jackson of Zumbrota. In the second lap Orres blazed a trail through the whoops, to take the third place spot away from Sorensen. The racers finished the remaining three laps in the same order with decent gaps between each. By the time second motos had rolled around to the Open A race, the weather was calmer, the track was a little drier, and the racers were ready to go. Sorensen understood that he needed a good start to stay in front of this fast group. The racers came out of the gate strong, with Nick looking to take the holeshot from Perron. At the last second, Sorensen
and Orres to pass him. In lap two it was Perron, Nick Jackson, Orres, Sorensen and Colin Jackson. Perron stretched out a comfortable five second gap in front of Nick; and the race looked pretty much locked in at that point. On lap four, Perron bobbled on a 180 degree turn just before the dirty dozen, and Nick gained a second. On lap five Nick reduced that comfortable gap Perron had made for himself. A lapper from the Open B class blocked Perron’s charge on the back sweeper, giving Nick even more opportunity to take that first place position. Just over the big table top in front of the spectator area, Perron looked back to see just how close Nick had gotten. Nick was right there, only a bike length behind; and there
cut in hard to the corner, taking that holeshot position away from both Nick and Perron. It was a strong move; but something that needed to be done to try to secure a lead position. From the holeshot it was Sorensen, Nick Jackson, Perron, Orres and Colin Jackson. Sorensen proceeded to lead the majority of the first lap. Just after the 120’ Kong jump, Perron took over Nick Jackson’s position, passing him on the inside of a turn. Sorensen didn’t have a chance, Perron was on fire. After passing Nick, he charged after Sorensen, catching and passing him in the back sweeper. There is a very technical three turn section just before the finish line at Kellogg Motocross, where Sorensen made just enough of a mistake for Nick

was only an eighth of the track left to go. Perron cranked on the throttle trying to maintain his lead; but there was still that hairy, technical three turn section just before the finish. Nick was not going to let this go without a fight; he barreled through the three turns, just rubbing tires with Perron. At the final feet before the finish, Perron tucked his head and grabbed that throttle, fighting his way to the checkered flag. Nick was so close, but could not get that pass in for the first place finish. The second moto finish order was Joe Perron, Nick Jackson, Ryan Orres, Josh Sorensen and Colin Jackson. It was a crazy race to match the crazy spring weather. Just the kind of start the 2011 motocross season needed. T
he day that many Iowa motocross racers had been impatiently waiting for finally arrived as they took to the track at Winterset, Iowa's Riverside Raceway which is located just southwest of Des Moines. Although rainy weather forced the cancellation of a Saturday practice, the racers were greeted Sunday morning by a perfectly prepped track and decent weather. A few changes were made to the circuit this year as well, most notably being a new location for the whoop section. The story of the day had to be the big turnout in the money paying classes. It seems that the A riders were out in full force and looking to start the season on a good note by grabbing some cash and a share of the Honda and Kawasaki contingency available at the track this year. Seventeen riders took the gate for the first Open A moto and interest was high to see who would come out on top. Riverside regulars Devin Reed, Colin Hickman, and Brad DePrenger soon established that they would be the main players on this day. Both Hickman and Reed were sporting new bike brands, Hickman on a two stroke KTM and Reed riding a Storm Lake Honda in place of his familiar Kawasakis. Hickman grabbed the holeshot and held off DePrenger and Reed to the checkers, but not without an exciting race. It was one of those races that got the crowd humming, "what a race" and made you happy to be back at the race after a long Iowa winter. Matt Johnson from Otho, Iowa and Danny Stephens from Humeston rounded out the top five in moto one. Moto two saw Hickman take the point with Reed on his back wheel. DePrenger was quickly carving his way through riders from a mid pack start, and soon moved into third, setting his sights on the top two on his 2-stroke
Yamaha. Johnson crossed the line in seventh on the first lap, but was moving to the front also. DePrenger moved into second by mid moto and once again began to apply the pressure to Hickman, which finally paid off just before the white flag as he moved into the top lead. At the white flag it was DePrenger, Hickman, Reed, and Stephens with Johnson pushing him hard. DePrenger held off Hickman and took the overall. Johnson found his way past both Stephens and Reed for a well deserved third and third overall. Stephens also snuck by Reed for fourth in the moto but his 5-4 on the day wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough to overtake Reed's 3-5 for the fourth overall. The 250A races were shaping up much the same as the Open class after Hickman, DePrenger, and Reed stood on the podium after the first moto. Reed grabbed the holeshot in the second moto but crashed and Hickman once again found himself on the point and began to stretch out the lead as Suzuki rider Travis Ruepke and Woolstock, Iowa's Brennan Myers ran second and third. Johnson and Deprenger worked their way into second and third by mid race and began to reel in Hickman. The white flag saw both riders catching the KTM rider but time ran out on the pursuers and Hickman took the overall with a 1-1 score. A war was also waged for the smaller bike supremacy in the Super Mini class as Derrick Rogers, Mark Buhl, and Jayden Wertz all showed similar speed. Rogers got the best of it in the end. Buhl had actually caught and passed Rogers in the first moto but then made a mistake allowing Rogers and Wertz to get by. In the second moto the finish order was Rogers, Buhl, and Wertz, but the three, along with Kawasaki mounted Brian Neuenkirk raced very close all day. A double winner on the day was Mason Kerr from Altoona, Iowa who went 1-1 in the talented Schoolboy class, and also was perfect in the sixteen rider 250B class on his 2-
stroke Yamaha. Bodie Wood and Austyn Powers rounded out the podium in Schoolboy, while Hayley Smith and Wood took second and third in 250B. Racers sneak one in at Hangtime Akron, Indiana - March 26 By Becky Stichter

t was sunny out, but with temperatures in the 30's it was cold!! Even still the brave riders came out to race, just putting on some extra layers of clothing. Some just wanted to race, others wanted to get to know the track a little better before the area qualifier coming later in April. Starting the racing action Saturday morning were the big quads. In the Quad A class, Eric Lapato came out of the gates hard both motos and was able to finish 1-1. Despite a good effort from both Matt Simmons and John Manning, neither were able to pass Lapato. In the Quad B class, Yamaha rider, Greggory Miller, shot of the gates first and set the pace for the group. In the first moto Miller was able to maintain his lead. Behind him Mike Bekel and Jacob Grover were battling for second, riding quad to quad many times. With a lot of hard riding, Grover was able to get ahead of Bekel for second place this moto. Mike Bekel and Jacob Grover fight for position in Quad B. In moto two, Miller led all the way for all with his 2-1 ahead of Farley’s 1-2 finishes. Austin Crum and Zach Copeland put on another win. Grover and Bekel were battling The staff of Reads Racing Unlimited ran a good show in the 250C class. In the first again. Bekel rode a little harder this time and a full series this weekend, running races on moto, Crum led the way out of the gates, but wasn’t going to let Grover finish ahead of Saturday evening and Sunday morning too. Ian Wilmington and Zach Copeland weren’t him. Bekel's hard work paid off, and he finfar behind. t’s going to rain, it’s going to be freezing, it’s going to snow, there are going to be thunderstorms all day, the track is going to be a lake, The Mayan prediction of Earth’s demise is going to happen this weekend. The speculation ran rampant all week leading up to Sunday morning when the sun rose over Aztalan and it turned into a beautiful, dry, 80 degree day. The 375 entries that chose to ignore the doomsayers got to enjoy a perfect day of racing on a perfect Aztalan track. Soon after practice the season was ready to kick off and the 50Sr class was at

the gate. DJ Gritzmacher grabbed a handful of throttle and was first around the holeshot. He then rocketed off to a comfortable lead which he held to the checkers. Kane Harpster finished the first lap in second place, but had Brody Spiekerman all over his rear fender. By the time lap two was finished Spiekerman had settled into second and Harpster chased him hard from third all the way to the checkers. The moto two holeshot went to Brandon Martyniak as he dove inside Gritzmacher at the corner. Gritzmacher was quick to take over the lead through the Gator Pit and once again settled into his own pace as he led to the finish. Martyniak held onto second with Spiekerman close behind. Spiekerman (2/3) finished second overall as Martyniak (5/2) took third. Next up was the 125Jr class, and when the gate dropped Dustin Sikorski launched his Yamaha down the start straight only to leave the inside open just enough for Dakin Coons to steal the holeshot in the last few feet. Justin Wolf was less than a half bike back in third place. By the time everyone hit the plateau on lap one it was now Tylor Skodras out front followed by Coons, Wolf and then Sikorski. Coons slipped back a couple of positions in the
barn section but at the plateau on lap two he jumped over Sikorski to take away third place. Coons chased Wolf but just couldn’t get close enough to make a move before the checkers flew. Coons grabbed the moto two holeshot by two bike lengths over Skodras, then started stretching out a lead. Joseph Gomez was sitting in third as he cleared the plateau, but Wolf, running in fourth, had his sights set on third place. On lap two in the west end Skodras took over the lead and Wolf moved up on Gomez setting the order to the finish. When the checkers flew it was Skodras that grabbed the overall with a 1/1 performance. Coons used his 3/2 finishes to finish second and Wolf (2/3) grabbed the final podium spot. Jason Warner led +25A around the holeshot but Tyler Smulders quickly charged out front by the first trip over the plateau. Warner was being challenged by Greg Hochmuth and by the time they came over the plateau on lap two Hochmuth was running in second. Smulders managed a comfortable lead with Hochmuth and Warner holding down the next two spots to the finish. Warner edged out Smulders for the moto two holeshot, but once again Smulders was out front after the first pass through the sand on the west end. By the second time over the plateau Hochmuth was in second and closing in on Smulders. Hochmuth was

putting pressure on Smulders and finally on lap five found the opening to get by and out front. Back in fourth place Matt Albrecht was defending against a hard charging Mark Marescalco who was putting a wheel in every chance he got. On lap four back in the sand stretch Marescalco found a big enough slot to slip through and then hold onto fourth place to the finish. Kirsten Raemisch and Ashley Densow were bar to bar around the holeshot in moto one of the Women’s class with Sierra Dortch close behind. The top three stayed in order to the finish of moto one. In moto two Raemisch grabbed the holeshot but once again Densow pulled in right behind her. Densow closed in on Raemisch and made the pass as they hit the plateau on lap two. Densow held off Raemisch for the next lap but on the white flag lap Raemisch slipped past in the west end. When the checkers flew it was Raemisch on top the podium with a 1/1 day while Densow (2/2) was second and Dortch (3/3) was third.
Tim Boblin grabbed the +50 moto one holeshot. Ed Smulders was on the gas and soon passed Kenneth Petrillo for second. Smulders capitalized on Boblin not jumping the plateau as he jumped over Boblin to take the lead. Smulders soon had some breathing room as he held the lead to the checkers. Back in third place Greg Niles was being pressured by both Allen Brhely and Petrillo. Petrillo got by Niles in the Para-style section to take over third. Wayne Slagle had fought his way into the battle for Brhely’s fourth place position and as they went over the plateau on lap three Slagle moved right onto Brhely’s rear wheel. Slagle slipped past to grab the spot as they went through the sand sec---tion and held it to the checkers.

plateau. Smulders pulled a repeat of moto one as he out jumped Boblin for the lead and

then settled into his own comfortable pace to the finish. Boblin held onto second while Petrillo was running third. Sla gle made a charge in the final lap and challenged Petrillo for the position but the checkers flew before he could move up. Smulders (1/1) topped the class with Boblin (2/2) in second, and Petrillo (3/3) finished up the podium. Smulders commented after the race, “I just turned 50 in February so this is my first race in the class. I suppose I am the young gun in the class, but these guys are faster than you think. My day went pretty good; I wasn’t going to race today because I didn’t have a bike until Rob from Rob’s Performance asked if I needed a bike to use. I got one practice lap on the bike then in the first moto I think I was third in the holeshot but got around the second place guy. I got by Boblin over the plateau and then was able to run my own race. Boblin wasn’t doing the plateau today or the triple before it and I was, so that gave me the advantage. The track crew did an awesome job on the new section and even my son said this was the best the track has been in a long time. I really want to thank Rob at Rob’s Performance, Smith Goggles, UFO, and Eric Gorr. I couldn’t do anything without Eric he is the man. Also a huge thanks to the Aztalan Club for putting on a great race.” As always Sportsman B/C was a fast, fun race to watch as Aaron Koch grabbed a big holeshot. Koch was first over the plateau with Jason Bernhardt and Brandon Clifford close behind. As lap three started Kyle Olson had also slipped into the chase as the top four were battling in a tight formation. Bernhardt and Clifford got by Koch in the west end and came over the plateau almost side by side. Koch lost third to Olson in the barn section and now had Brandon Marescalco putting pressure on him. On the final trip over the plateau Bernhardt bobbled and slipped back to fourth leaving Clifford out front to grab the moto win. Olson finished second with Marescalco right behind. holeshot in moto two with Olson right next to him. Unfortunately Olson went down just after the holeshot which put him back at the end of the pack. By the time the first bike came over the plateau it was Bernhardt out front with Marescalco at his rear wheel and William Lafon close behind in third. Marescalco took over the lead on lap two in the west end and began gaining some breathing room ahead of Bernhardt. Jordan Orr was challenging Lafon and finally was able to make the pass as the white flag came out. Olson made a hard charge and worked his way back into eighth by the time he crossed the finish. Marescalco (3/1) won the overall while Bernhardt (4/2) and Olson (2/8) were second and third. In the 65cc class it was a day for Dylan Densow to dominate as he led both motos holeshot to finish. In moto one Densow launched out of the gate and proceeded to gap the class, settling into his own pace to the finish. Tyler Gamble was running in second with DJ Gritzmacher right behind. ain or shine, the area qualifier at Hangtime was going to happen. After a week of rain, riders were asking if the event was going to be cancelled. The staff at Reads Racing Unlimited made the decision to
run the race, rain or shine. Realizing that weather and track conditions may not be ideal, the Reads' staff thought it was important to give riders a change to qualify. Fortunately the weather cooperated for the weekend. The sun, light breeze and mild temperatures on Saturday was a nice change. The track was wet and muddy in the morning for the practice and the first few races. Then it started to get tacky and by the end of the day there was some dust flying! Eric Goodson of Connersville, IN and Jayce Pennington of Walnut Hill, IL were double winners on Saturday. Goodson, mounted on a Suzuki, ran 1-2 in the 450A class. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Adam Lock was first out of the gates and took the holeshot. Soon after that Lock got tangled up in some traffic and fell back. lowed by Mays and Pulley. In the second moto Lock got onto the track without any difficulties and challenged Goodson for the lead. As these two battled, Maxx Malatia was coming up to pressure them. Lock didn't let the pressure force him to make a mistake, and he crossed the finish line first. Goodson was second and Malatia third. In the 250A class, Goodson, mounted on a Suzuki finished 1-1. In the start of the first moto, Goodson, Malatia and Mason Eck were riding bike to bike, battling for the holeshot. Goodson went to the inside and grabbed the holeshot; just inches ahead of the other riders. After that Goodson took off and pulled away from the pack to get a comfortable lead. Kawasaki rider Bogen Cochran pulled up to second place and also had a good lead ahead of the other riders. Behind him there was a battle between Eck and Malatia for third. Eck was able to outride Malatia and finish third this moto. In the second moto Goodson again took the early lead and separated himself from the others. Cochran, Malatia and Yamaha rider Vaughn Mays were fighting for second place. Mays was able to edge past the other riders to finish this time, with Cochran third. KTM rider Jayce Pennington was also a double winner. He ran 1-1 in the 85cc(9-11) stock class. Suzuki rider Robert Semelsberger from Windber, PA. grabbed the holeshot in the first moto, but was soon passed by Pennington. Tanner Chada was picking up speed, and next to pass Semelsberger, grabbing second place. With the first two riders looking secure in their positions, Semelsberger was working
hard to stay in third place. Gage Pace, Colton Crum and Jordan Parmley were coming up hard and fast from behind. Crum, who doesn't seem to mind a track that's a little wet kept going faster and faster. Crums' effort paid off, and he finished in third place. In the second moto Pennington and Chada again claimed first and second positions right off the start. Crum and Parmley

Throughout the moto there were several position changes and there was no room for error. West was the winner, followed by Ross than Tanner Walters in third. Moto two was no disappointment. Rutter was back in action and blasted out of the gates to take the lead. He continued to ride well and pulled ahead of the other riders. Again there were several battles for positions throughout the race. Rutter took the win this moto, followed by Sam Mattingly and West. The 250B class put on a good show today too. In the first moto Suzuki rider Warren Nelson took the holeshot. Spykes KTM ride Dakota Robins didn't waste any time and soon passed Nelson, then set the pace for the rest of the moto. Nelson and Chad Jeralds, often riding bike to bike were battling for second place. #180 Eric Goodson and Maxx Malatia in the 450A class. Goodson went on to take the overall. a little harder and was able to get ahead of Jeralds. Robins crossed the finish line first, followed by Nelson then Jeralds. In the second moto Nelson and Jeralds battled each other again. Jeralds was leading most of the moto, but Nelson was right on his rear fender. In the final back stretch it looked like Jeralds was going to win; but literally, at the last possible moment Nelson zipped by Jeralds and won the moto! This is what racing is all about! In the 450B class several riders had a rough start and went down in the first moto. All the riders, except for Dakota Robins were able to get up and finish. Michael Bugg, mounted on a Honda, was the early leader. Zach Hoffman and Jeffrey Thode weren't far behind. Bugg was able to hold the lead for a few laps and then Hoffman decided it was time to make a move. Showing no mercy, Hoffman passed Bugg and won. The start went better in the second moto as Hoffman and Bugg were in the front of the pack. Jake Baumert was coming up from behind and soon Walnut Hill, ILâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jayce Pennington won the 85cc (9-11) and 65cc (10-11) Stock classes. enough putting pressure on the leaders. first moto. In the second moto KTM rider Kennan Leis had a better run and was battling Gage Pfeifer for second place. Leis held tight, pulled the throttle back more and finished in second. Shelby Rolen, riding on a Yamaha, took charge in the Women 14+ class. Rolen ran 1-1. Sami Sisinger and Sandra Rios rode bike to bike in some of their battles. Sisinger was able to hold off Rios, finishing 2-2. Suzuki rider Ashton Hayes was looking strong and confident in the 85cc (12-14) stock class. Hayes was able to set the pace and ran 1-1. There were several position changes in both motos. In the first moto Alexander Nagy and Jamison Duclos were the second and third place riders. In the second moto, Nicholas Craig and Chad Saultz stepped it up, with Craig placing second in this moto. So despite the track starting out wet, the day was great for racing, and there was some quality racing done today. Congratulations to all who qualified and will be moving on to the regionals! he District 22 race season started Sunday, April third at Montezuma's Fun Valley Motocross track. The day started cool and cloudy and turned to partly cloudy and over 80 degrees by the end of the day with tacky to dry track conditions. Many looked forward, and were excited to be racing on the newly upgraded track which included new tabletops, additional jumps, a huge downhill and twelve-pack rhythm section. The first race off the gate was Open B with eight riders on the gate. Shay Moore #104 pulled the holeshot with Riley Christie #29 on his rear wheel. Christie pulled away from Moore around the first corner before the step-up. Christie flew up the step-up as Moore continued to try to get more ground on him with Mason Kerr gaining in third. Moore lost

more ground on Christie by taking a wide corner after the finish line with Kerr taking the inside closing in on Moore. With possible mechanical issues, Moore dropped behind Kerr after the step-up. Josh Meuzelaar was behind Moore in fourth anticipating a pass, but Moore gained confidence in his bike again and stayed strong in third. Two bike lengths behind Christie, Kerr started closing in the gap in the whoops section before the start of the third lap. Kerr still couldn't get past Christie and Christie walked away with the first win first moto of the season with Moore and Chase Conis following Kerr. The second moto began with Christie passing Kerr around the first corner. Moore also worked his way to second position before the downhill and Conis followed in third, Meuzelaar was fourth with Kerr putting pressure on him. Kerr regained his third place po-
sition and did his best to make gains on Moore, keeping safe positioning between him and Conis. In the third lap Kerr picked up the pace and took away Moore's second position. Top five overall were Christie, Kerr, Moore, Conis and Meuzelaar. The adrenalin really started rushing before the start of the first Open A class moto of the season. Eleven riders burst out of the gate with Ryan Simonton #126 and Kody Pirie #91 fighting for the holeshot. Zachary Wallace and Ty Tyrrell stayed tight in the first corner with Pirie maintained his first lap lead as Simonton followed a close second with Danny Stephens taking over Tyrrell's third position. Racing was tight by the tabletops with not even a wheel's distance between the top four racers. Simonton ran through the whoops get-

ting two bike lengths ahead of Stephens easing the pressure while trying to gain on Pirie. Starting the second lap Stephens took the first corner too wide as Tyrrell took it tight and moved up. The third lap had Tyrrell and Pirie rubbing elbows over the step-up. Tyrrell managed to take over the lead right before the double-doubles with Simonton grabbing second through the doubles.

With the third lap got heated as Simonton maintained second, while Bobby Hanson moved up to third position setting Pirie to fourth. Pirie came back and blew past Hanson in the whoops section taking the third place spot by less than a bike length. The second moto started with a tight holeshot. Tyrrell kept the lead while Hanson stayed second with Wallace and Jed Seeman
in hot pursuit. As Tyrrell and Hanson hit the downhill, Tyrrell caught a rut and went down. Hanson narrowly missed Tyrrell and took the lead with Wallace and Simonton keeping single line status past Tyrrell. Tyrrell got up on his own accord and went on to make up lost time. Simonton kept the heat on Wallace throughout the race but couldn't get enough on him to make a pass. With the start of the last lap, Hanson maintained a heavy lead, while Simonton still pursued Wallace, a bike's length behind. Simonton and Wallace were side by side on the downhill corner with Wallace on the inside. Simonton took second away from Wallace just before the finish. Top five overall results were Simonton, Hanson, Wallace, Pirie and Tyrrell. With six riders in the 125 class, the temperature outside was warming, and the racing was getting hot as well. Ryan Christie on his Yamaha took the holeshot with Jordan Harnish #4 and Corey Jacobe behind. Harnish flew over the step-up and took advantage as Jacobe held back on the jump. Christie maintained his lead as Jacobe stepped up to second leaving Harnish in third place and Nick Ryan fourth. Christie ended up dropping to
third as Jacobe took over first ahead of Harnish in the third lap, and they finished in that order. The second moto started with Christie taking the lead with Jacobe and Harnish in pursuit. Christie maintained a healthy lead throughout the moto with Jacobe keeping distance from Harnish and Ryan maintaining fourth. nticipation was high as everyone knew Motosports Park had been completely redone, and the season opener was pushed back into May. Not just a face lift or a few section changes, all that remained was the original position of the starting gate. The entire grounds have been re-done. Improved parking, and a totally new track with an all new feel and layout. In the minds of everyone we talked to, it is a huge success. The season opener had 450 plus entries, and while Aaron Vincer and his crew struggled in the background with watering system failures, and other (non common to Motosports Park) issues, the riders all seemed really happy with the day, and most never knew of the crew’s extra scrambling. That’s when you know things are good... when problems the promoter has to deal with never get to be issues for you as a rider.

He rode hard to finish third as Macias ran his own pace for the win and overall. Tatar and Berggren finished in fourth and fifth. Chada had more luck later as he went on to win the 65Sr class ahead of Macias and Tatar. They went 1-2-3 in both motos while Aiden Kaiser went 4-5 for fourth overall. The A classes were fast, and the racing was as close as you could ask for. Sixteen riders left the line in the first 250A moto, and after some bumping through the first two sweeping corners, Cody Simonton was leading the pack. By the time the second lap was underway, the lead pack was starting to form. Simonton had slid back a ways, while Ty Tyrrell was leading with Iowa’s Jeremy Kress all over his rear fender. James Garrett, Scott Zont, and Zach Coons were in a super close battle over third that had them three-wide in many of the soft corners. Kress made his way by Tyrrell in the back section, and just after finishing the third lap Coons flew around Zont through the rough new section by the starting line. Garrett made his way into second, and just before the finish Coons stuffed is way into an inside line pushing Tyrrell wide, taking over third. Zont finished fifth just ahead of Brandon Pope. Garrett was second off the start with Tyrrell in the lead as first moto winner Kress had problems and wasn’t able to finish, having to push his bike off the track. As they finished the second lap, Garrett got his chance at the overall. “Ty had a good start and I was just following him. Then he made a mistake and I was able to get by. He spun out in the new turn next to the starting area. From there I just pushed to stay out front.” Garrett went on to win the moto as Tyrrell finished second. Coons worked past Pope late in the moto for third. It still brings back great memories of times long past to hear an all two-stroke class hit the track. What’s nostalgic to some of us, is just a norm to the fifteen riders that were on the line today. Taking back to back moto wins was Conner Robinson of Roscoe, IL. Paul Gerke worked into second shortly after the start in both motos for second overall. Ricki Williams ran in third most of the first moto before Joshua Ellingson passed him.
Williams made up for it in the second moto finishing third while Ellingson took his turn crossing the line in fourth. TZR/ 4PR Decal backed Robinson after the second moto, “The motos went really good, and the track just keeps getting better. The whole day went good and I won both motos. The track is a lot more technical, and the corners are great, yet it still feels more wide open. The rhythm section in the long sweeper is cool. The 125 is pretty much wide open out there and it is fun.” As could be expected, the 250B class was fast, and full of more good racing. Nuke event regular Cory Catalani grabbed the holeshot and started putting a little gap on Brady Neys right away in the first lap. Just then he dropped it in a tight rutted corner. Neys snuck by for the lead as Catalani was up quick enough not to lose any more spots. Just into the second lap he re-took the lead and then never gave it up. Neys was holding tough in second while Mason Flatness was riding hard in third. Coming through a couple riders, Malachi Messenger was soon up to Flatness, and looking for a way around. With one lap left he found it, and then went right after Neys. Just a couple turns

from the finish he found a fast line and moved into second, as Reid Janson finished fifth. The second moto was all about Catalani as he led all the way to the win and overall. Chad Jeralds put together a good moto and finished second after an eighth in the first outing. Neys was again strong, and finished third
for second overall ahead of Messenger (2-4). Zach Coons never really pulled a big gap, but he led the Open A class right from the gate drop. Rock River/ EVS/ Fly Racing backed Coons, “It went pretty good. I got the holeshot, and then just rode. It felt good out front. I think the new track is good. Its fun,

and all different. I really like some of the soft corners with the good ruts.” Behind him, James Garrett kept pace and was never pushed too hard as he ran in second. Tyrrell was running third most of the moto until he gave way to the relentless pressure from Jeremy Kress, dropping back to fourth ahead of Chris Lazzaretto. Scott Goggles/ MSR/ Decal Works/ Pro Action Suspension supported Garrett was happy after his second place finish, “The tracks is tons better than it has been previously. There’s a lot more lines and it is a lot of fun. The corners with ruts are good and it is all fun. I think I have a chance at winning, I just have to go a little faster everywhere.” Coons rode off to win the second moto with Tyrrell finishing second. Iowa’s Todd Walton was third. Possibly the fastest ride of the moto came from Garrett who went down in the first turn, and started out last in the twenty-three rider class. He charged all the way back to an impressive fourth, good for third overall. 250C was the biggest class of the day... and Drew Jackson topped them all, quite an accomplishment. Ted Loomis won the Quad C class on the Hilltop track.
in moto two, his second place finish was all he needed. Ryan Hagen took the second moto win after dropping Jackson to second. Hagen settled for second overall after finishing third in moto one behind Nicolas Falk and Bettendorf, Iowa’s Jackson. One of many riders that have put in a ton of laps on the Motosports Park track over the years is +50 class winner Roy Nafzger. We asked him what he thought about the track changes, and he was genuinely excited about it. “The changes are excellent. It is good for all levels. There’s something for the experts, and yet it fits the beginners. There’s a little bit of everything out there, and it is done really well. There’s ruts, hard pack flat corners, enough technical stuff, and some rough sections. They used the terrain, and put it all to a much better use.” Nafzger won all his motos in the +50 and +45 classes. He found a tougher run in +40 though as Tim Filippi
scored both moto wins. The two had a great battle in both motos, taking turns holding the lead several times. As always, it was another great day at Motosports Park... and with the Nuke Series just getting going, it sure looks to be an exciting summer.
