Dairyland Classic Dirt Track. Wisconsin’s premier flat track motorcycle racing event returns to the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth on Friday June 1. The Dairyland Classic Presented by Hoban Brothers - which has been televised on the Speed Channel’s Lucas Oil On The Edge program – celebrates its 28th edition by presenting its fastpaced, fan-friendly event which showcases the best of amateur, professional, vintage, youth, and quad flat track racing. The stars of the AMA Grand National and Pro Singles Championships showcase the 450cc Pro/Expert division. 2011 AMA Grand National Twins champion Jared Mees scored his third consecutive win while 2011 AMA Grand National Singles champion Sammy Halbert claimed the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash For Cash. 2011 AMA Pro Singles champion Mikey Martin and Pro Singles runner-up Mikey Avila both recorded impressive finishes in the Pro Main Event as well. “The support divisions are really strong, but last year really stepped it up a notch,” reports Bert Sumner. “I’d like to see our Youth division get even stronger, and hopefully this will be the year.” For more information, visit dairylandclassic.com. Hall recognized with National award. The American Motorcyclist Association Board of Directors announced the recipients of national awards that recognize outstanding contributions to the world of motorcycling. "The AMA Board of Directors is pleased to honor these men and women who have done so much for motorcycling," said AMA Board of Directors Chairman Stan Simpson. "The world of motorcycling is in better shape and more fun because of the efforts of these individuals.” Among those awards, and new for 2012, the AMA Outstanding Off-Road Rider Award highlights the achievements of an individual who has contributed to the promotion of the motorcycling lifestyle and the protection of off-highway motorcycling, and has consistently demonstrated leadership, hard work, and dedication to the AMA

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... mission. Jay Hall, who runs Hall's Cycles in Springfield, IL, has been making those contributions for dozens of years. This AMA Life Member is also an AMA off-road congressman, District 17 hare scrambles director, former International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) racer and longtime ISDE team manager, mechanic and selection committee member. "I'm a firm believer in participation in our sport," Hall said. "If we don't participate and help out with out sport, it will die. We have to be proactive about it. I eat, breathe, live and work with dirt bikes six days a week, and on the seventh day, we go racing. I've been doing it my whole life. My youngest son - he's 15 now - he wants to be a racer and motorcycle dealer like his dad. I'm very blessed.” 20 years of Megacross, already? Funny how when one looks back and goes over history of something, that it looks different. Megacross started as a whim and desire and has turned into a race series over the years that many enjoy. We started by working out of the back of a pickup truck and watering with an old tractor and cobbled together water tank. Fast forward to the kick off this season, large turnouts, efficient water truck, and a smooth operation. This year having a Pro AM event, during a area Fun Days event that is being built around our races. Long way from "are you still doing that stuff," attitude that used to be in this town. Now we get calls on when the dates are so local businesses can staff more help to accommodate thier customers. Megacross has come a long way, racers who have raced here now bring thier grand kids to do the same. June will kick off that Pro Am and Fun Days event along with another Fair event in September. It's been a long ride, and one we have enjoyed. Thank you goes out to the people and the riders that make it happen. Gerhard Ward

Nitro Kicks Off Trials Season elmwood, Illinois - april 15 By Nancy Littlefield

T

he motorcycle trials in Elmwood, Illinois was quite an event. The kickoff event for the 2012 season brought riders from near and far to shake off the winter rust. Riders at the event ranged in age from 9 year old Elliott Key of Arcola, IL to 75 years old Roy Clugg of Burlington, IA. This highlights one of the nicest aspects about trials; there is a class for all ages and abilities. There are ten classes you can choose to ride in from Youth to Expert. There are even classes for the vintage bikes, senior riders, as well as a Women’s class. There is a real family atmosphere amongst the riders. Each class rides together in groups, scoring and coaching one another. The weekend of the Elmwood Trials had severe storms pending throughout the state of Illinois. Riders nervously followed the forecast as weather centers sent storm warnings a day ahead throughout the Midwest. Lady luck prevailed and the storms didn’t hit the riding area. The day dawned cool, dry, and perfect for riding. There were ten sections, or riding areas, for the riders to

compete in. The terrain varied from creek and hill sections, to huge log sections. There were even some man-made obstacles thrown into the natural environment. Riders have to stay in specific boundaries within each section while trying to not put their feet down when riding, go out of bounds, kill the engine, or go backwards. When a rider does any of these things, they are assessed points. In the sport of trials riding, the goal is to not get points. Ending the day with a zero score is a trials rider’s dream come true! Just ask 16 year old Kailey Rivenburgh from Wonder Lake, IL. She rode her second trials ever and scored a zero for the day. A perfect day of riding! In one of the most challenging sections for the experts, there were three logs that each rider had to ride over. This may seem like no big deal, except the logs were about 4 feet high! They then needed to stop quickly after jumping off these to jump another challenging log. These riders also have to keep control of the bikes and keep them within the boundaries. It is extremely entertaining to watch these riders make the most difficult sections look so easy. Some riders had to go over multiple tractor tires that

expert class rider Dave Rohrschneider over one of the log sections.

were laid end to end. They had just gone through a muddy creek, so the tires were nice and slick with water and mud. Sound easy? Just slip a little and end up in the center of one of those huge tires! Trials are definitely the gymnastics event of motorcycles. The control these riders need to learn to be successful is amazing. Not everyone will be able to do what the Experts do, but it sure is fun watching everyone develop to their best ability. If you have never watched motorcycle trials, you should put it on your calendar! The event took place in a large wooded farm pasture with rolling hills and a creek running through the property. There is always something new at Elmwood. For the past few years riders have shared the property with numerous cows roaming the pastures. For the city folks, it is an interesting experience. It is especially fun for the kids when they get to play in the creek.

This year we were entertained by five rescue ponies and a lama. As far as we know the lama never spit on anyone. Tom Bledsoe was the trials master for the day. Thanks to Tom and others who have spent countless hours setting up the event! Tom said he would be out setting up a section and he would turn around, and there was the lama! He would not even hear him approach. Please visit nitrotrials.com for more information on schedules and riding information. Dissell, Ward conquer Fox Valley GP wedron, Illinois - april 15 By Trackman Photos by Don McDonald

T

he first event for Fox Valley Off Road this season was a switch from the normal Hare Scrambles, changing to a GP to get the competitive juices flowing seemed to be the way to kick it off. The light winter and early nice weather had riders chomping at the bit to get out and compete. This April day didn’t disappoint anyone. Over a 130 entrants were greeted with some what muddy conditions which turned out to be prime if not “perfect” conditions. We complain about mother nature many times but today she did ok. GP racing has now started to become a who’s who when it comes to the kind of riders competing. Long motos, short day, long laps and limited classes are the order of the day. Enduro, HS, MX, SX and even HC riders were represented today. A, B, C didn’t matter, you put on your helmet, snapped your boots, and went to the line. First race of the day, 122-250 class, Daniel Janus ( #27) a well known and accomplished enduro type rider was competing head to head with Colton Beard (#49), a B class MX kid who is making his way up the ladder. Throw in the mix Alec Perry, Travis Ward, a couple of kids who are new to the A class in HS, and the rest of the thirty some rider field and you have a competitive moto! Beard holeshotted the first moto on his

RCR Kawasaki with Janus on his Halls Cycles Husqvarna on his rear fender. Fifteen minutes into the moto, they were still neck and neck. Neither giving an inch. A small crowd started to gather by the finish line area as they realize there was something special going on. Little did they know it was going to be like this all day long! Beard held on and won the moto, with Janus just a second back. Ward came from behind a bunch of riders for

alec Perry ahead of eventual race winner Matt Dissell in the open class.

third. Perry gathered up fourth and pretty much handed Ward third as he had a mechanical issue which slowed his progress to the front. The second moto was equally interesting as Travis Ward launched at the drop of the flag and surged into the lead. This time Perry was doggin the leader lap after lap. Beard the hero in moto one, had an less then stellar start and had to play catch up. Janus was in the hunt but a little off the pace. Twenty minutes went by and at the end Ward still led with Perry who desperately tried to get around all race. Beard came from last (over 30 riders) to fifth! Daniel finished third. The 122-450 class didn’t disappoint the now very interested crowd. Enter in Matt Dissell (#90), a very accomplished off road racer and a kid who grew up at a riding park. He had to contend with Alec Perry and Travis Ward in this class also as the two kids rode their 250’s in the big bore class. Ward won moto one with Dissell pushing him all the way to the checkers. Perry waited in third for a mistake that never came. Moto two saw Dissell rocket out into the lead with Perry in the stalking mode, Ward was off pace about fifteen seconds, and never got into the hunt. Spencer Burke rode hard to finish fourth, he was close the whole race just didn’t get into the fray. The +45 plus class saw a couple distinguished HS riders give a good stompin on a couple long time moto heads. Jay Hall (Hall’s Cycle and AMA Outstanding Off Road Rider of the Year) along with Kenny Otterbach decided to show Orville Kline and Gerhard

Ward that they could run the faster GP pace, and keep it real. Hall came from mediocre starts to get into the lead, and Ward followed in the first moto. The duo put a good gap on the pack of over twenty some “old guys”. Ward stalled his Service Honda A/F 500 on lap three and Hall won going away. Otterbach finished in third after a stall of his own. Orville Kline took sixth as Jim Perry snuck in the top five. Second moto, Hall had a similar start, Ward watched the field take off as his machine decided “not now”. Otterbach and Kline battled for second and Perry was in the fray as well. In the end Hall, ( now winning two GP’s) redeemed his crash infested and getting hurt last fall’s GP with a very solid win. Otterbach rode hard and took the second while Ward ran out of time and eeked out a third ahead of Kline and Perry. A few of the other notable rides; Tim Damron, after a long hiatus from mx racing had a great ride to win the +30 class after a great battle with Daniel Janus. Mason Schuhler rocked with a solid win in the 85cc class, Dylan Boyd and Matt McDonald did a great job and were on the podium. Two HS riders and a MX kid in that group.

Garrett Ward, Thor Rick and Eli Otterbach podiumed the 65cc class. Rick and Ward battled both motos. Throw in Thumper, 14-29, Vintage, and Women’s classes and it turned out to be a fun day of racing. Gran Prix racing has become a nice change to the many things one can do on a motorcycle. Nothing more fun then a good smooth race day, excellent conditions, and just plain fun. MotoCity Raceway Opener staples, Minnesota - april 15 By Amber Vargo File photos from Sat practice

T

he first race at Motocity Raceway was a mud race, but still a fun day. Once Sunday morning rolled around it was a little drizzly out and it almost looked like the day would clear up. In the 250A class Annandale, MN’s Brandon Riehm took the lead in the first lap with Kody Graba and Gavin Kadlec not far behind. Riehm began to pull away a lap later to hold a comfortable lead by the end of the moto on his Kawasaki. Kadlec got in front of Graba, but Graba was following close behind as the muddy conditions had everyone riding cautious. Near the end of the moto, Graba pushed ahead on his Honda, and re-took second, dropping Kadlec back to third where he finished ahead of Cole Felland and Connor Ahlers. With Open C class out on the track, the ruts continued to get thicker and deeper with riders battling the conditions as well for the lead. Kawasaki rider Mitchell Masters took the lead into the first corner, followed closely by Curtis Wise. In the second lap Masters set a quick pace, and started to pull from the pack. Carter Reese was now in second as Reed Kannegiesser followed in the third. Wise had slid back into the pack. Merri-

field, MN’s Masters crossed the finish line for the win ahead of Reese. Kannegiesser finished third closely followed by Peter Nickel. With the rain not seeming to want to let up there was a riders meeting called after first motos, letting the riders vote if they wanted to continue and run a second set of motos. The race was called

after the first half. It wasn’t the kick-off everyone was looking forward to, but still, it felt good to get out and get the 2012 season started.

Pleasure Riders Double Header Cayuga, Indiana - april 15 Story by Dave Henry Photos by Michael Barth

A

pril 14 and 15 marked the first two rounds of the 2012 Motocross Championship Points Series presented by Apparel Unlimited. Mother Nature tried to throw a wrench in the weekend plans, but the crew at Pleasure Riders did all they could to make the best out of Saturday’s conditions. With about a three hour window with no rain, the crew managed to crank out one set of moto’s for the riders that braved the mud. Sunday’s conditions were completely different as temperatures climbed up to near 80 and winds were blasting through the area. The riders patiently waited as the crew gave the track the extra time it needed to dry and then the day began. Once the track was prepped for Sunday it proved to create great conditions. Sunday’s racers were also treated to the expansion of the lower level of the track by adding in two rhythm lanes and adding close to thirty seconds a lap longer lap times. Once the top tier riders had the new section dialed in they were checking in right around the two minute lap times. One of the fastest laps of the day was recorded by Dakota Blakeney in his Open B second moto. Open A and Open B were dropped together and it was a nice ride for Blakeney on his Remax Real Estate backed KX450. Blakeney was charging hard, and no one was going to catch him. Keeze Carver had the Open A class under control, but a bobble gave Blakeney all the room he needed to bring home the overall win. 85Sr racing was action packed as three riders battled for the overall. Both moto’s produced a KTM sandwich as KTM mounted Taiga Judd rode consistent for a 2-2 and second overall. Completing the KTM sandwich were Kawasaki mounted riders Trey Walters and Hunter Wilson. In moto one, Trey Walters took the win over Judd with Hunter Wilson coming home in third. Moto two provided a different outcome as Walters experienced some issues on the track after starting off in the lead. About half way through, Wilson took over the point position and never looked back. Walters mounted a nice comeback and was able to work his way back up to third. The overall went to Hunter Wilson with a 3-1, over Taiga Judd’s 2-2 and Trey Walters 1-3. In 125 action, Honda mounted Chance Trigalet was on the gas from the drop of the gate and never looked back in either moto. Trigalet checked out for a 1-1 sweep over DeCal Works backed Yamaha rider Trey Walters making his big bike debut with a 2-2 for 14 CYCLE USA, May 2012

all. Shelton, on his RT Graphix Honda went second overall. Rounding out the top three on for the win. Coming home in second for was Kenner Shutt on his Suzuki (3-3). Trithe moto and second overall was Cox. Fingalet also captured the Schoolboy win after sweeping both of those motos. Racing action in Open C was fantastic as several riders battled for the top spots in each moto. In moto one, Honda mounted Jared Keller was looking good, taking home the win. He crossed the line in front of another Honda backed rider, Austin Shelton. Bringing home third in the first moto was Yamaha mounted Bryce Cox. In the second moto Keller was unable to ride due to bike issues suffered while riding another class. This opportunity was all Austin Shelton needed to bust through with the Open C over- 250C class winner Bryce Cox.

ishing off the podium was Kelby Getz. Getz put in a solid second moto and made his way around Jeffrey Chaney to gain the last step on the box. Getz 5-3 beat out Chaney’s 4-4. 65Sr also saw great racing as the top three all finished different in the second moto from the first. In the first moto it was Derrick Bell on his Kawasaki bringing home the checkers with Catlin, IL racer Jacob McGee second ahead of Oaktown, IN native Troy Noland. In the second moto it was a Kawasaki that would again take the win again, but this time it was ridden by Noland, followed by Bell and McGee. So the overall finished as Bell (1-2), Noland (3-2) and McGee (2-3). 250C action was good with local up and comer Bryce Cox on his Yamaha taking the win after a 1-1 sweep. You can tell that all the practicing Cox has been doing is really paying off. Finishing second in both motos was Austin Shelton just ahead of Kelby Getz. Overall, it was a great day of racing at Pleasure Riders M/C. Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2012 Championship Points series will

Bomber track at LTM opens Casey, Illinois - april 1 By James Pinckard More photos at www.phyllisblume.com

L

incoln Trail Motosports has a new outdoor motocross track designed by the fastest rider Illinois ever had. April fools? NO!!! LTM has the new Bomber track designed and built by former Factory rider Mark the Bomber Barnett! “Our goal is to create a national caliber facility here at Lincoln Trail Motosports, complete with a rough, multi-line, technical motocross track, and we will not stop until we reach that goal.” Drew Jackson. “We are looking to bring back ‘real’ motocross.” Tim Jackson said as he looked at the great turnout for the first round of the Showdown Series. The first race on the new Bomber track brought in a great turnout of riders. What did they think of it? Bill Watts father of Noah Watts said “It was a great track, it got rough as well it

had big air. Hard for a father to watch.” Alex Rossetto, “The track got rough! I don’t mean a little, and it had many lines in the corners. I loved it.” So there you go, bring yourself to Casey and check out the Bomber track for yourself. The first classes on the line for 2012 was Open A and B. The first holeshot went to Yamaha rider Dalton Forester with Kawasaki rider Theodore Pauli on the inside of him before making a pass, and taking off. Blake Copeland was in tow moving to second with Kawasaki rider Denny Dooley third and Zach Hoffman fourth at the end of the first lap. Everything held from there as Pauli took the moto win ahead of Copeland, and Hoffman worked past Dooley for third. In the second moto

Pauli again took the lead, but in this moto Dooley had his KXF on the gas, keeping him honest all the way to the finish. Pauli took the moto and overall with Dooley second. Third for the moto went to KTM rider David Howard. With Howard’s sixth in the first moto it was only good enough for fifth overall. Third overall went to Hoffman who finished fourth for the moto. The Open B class had some great racing, and in fact had a three way tie for second! Kawasaki rider Robby Veil took care of first with both moto wins for the overall. Behind him is where the excitement was. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Ben Elson finished second with KTM rider Avery Gambill third and Brady Neys fourth. In the second moto Neys took second with Gambill third and Elson fourth. This gave them all an overall score of six, os the second moto set the final overall order as well. With the big dogs going first, it wasn’t long before the little guys got to race the new track. In 50Sr it was as easy as 1-2-3 because Cobra rider Edger Lewis finished first in both motos. Caiden Gerling finished second both motos just ahead of Clayton Anderson. One of the best races came from the +25 class. In the first moto Denny Dooley flew to the lead and went on the take the moto win with Honda rider Ryan Tracy on his heels. David Shirley finished third. In the second moto it looked like it would be the same with CYCLE USA, May 2012

After taking the lead and holding off Dooley for the moto win, he also wrapped up the day’s overall. Great racing! The rider with the best seat in the house to see the action was third place finisher for the moto and overall Cory Deadmond. The biggest class of the day was 250C. With thirty riders coming off the gate, Kawasaki rider Preston Pennington took the win with Yamaha rider Bryce Cox second and Buddy Stipp third. In the second moto Pennington and Cox had things covered and again taking first and second. In third was Honda

Rider Blake Mccombs. Third overall went to Honda rider Chance Trigalet who finished fourth both motos. Full Weekend at Hangtime akron, Indiana - april 21 By Becky Stichter

T

he staff of Reads Racing Unlimited scheduled a full weekend of racing at Hangtime this weekend, with two races on Saturday, and another Sunday. For Saturday morning action, the big bikes were first on the track. Jared Meranda, mounted on a Yamaha, was the quickest out of the gates in the 250C class. Trey Short and Kyle Renkenberger were only a few bike lengths behind. As they got further out onto the track, Short and Renkenberger opened up the throttle, and got around Meranda. Short was able to hold the others off, taking a win in the first moto. Meranda had another good start in the second moto. Short was a DNF. Kawasaki rider Kody Elder stepped it up, found his pace, and took the lead early in the moto. Renkenberger and Meranda pressured from behind, but weren't able to get around Elder. Renkenberger, running 2-2, took the overall win. In the +50 class, Bryan Bowen ran 1-1, shutting down Brad Winstead and Mike Farley. There was some fast racing in the Supermini class today, with a good battle between Nick Raseta and Garrett Snodgrass. Raseta was first out of the gates, and took off. Snodgrass, getting caught up in some traffic out of the gate, was the last one on the track.

Nick Raseta won his 85cc 12-15 class.

#520 Dakota Kelly and Bailey Batchelor in the supermini class.

Raseta rode at a fast pace the entire moto. Getting onto the track last may have actually been good for Snodgrass, as it forced him to work hard to catch up. Snodgrass did just that. Riding with the throttle pulled back, he was able to pass everyone, except for Raseta. Raseta knew Snodgrass was coming up, but kept his pace, and won the moto. In the second moto, Snodgrass had a good start, and took the lead. This moto Raseta was the one chasing the leader. Snodgrass was able to hold Raseta back, giving Snodgrass the win

this time. This was a great race between these two! Raseta was looking good all day, and may have been one of his fastest days this season. J.W. Bright rode a solid third, and Bailey Batchelor and Dakota Kelly had a close battle for fourth overall. In Schoolboy 1, Kody Elder ran 1-1, with Hayden Clark finishing 2-2 . In Schoolboy 2, Dalton Packard led the group with a comfortable lead, finishing 1-1. Kaleb McDonald and Colt McPhearson were riding well too. McDonald was able to finish 2-2, followed by McPhearson. Nick Raseta was on the track again in the 85cc (12-15) class. He was out of the gate ahead of the others, but Isaiah Shelton and J.W. Bright weren't far behind. For most of the race, Shelton was only a bike length behind Raseta, so there was no room for any mistakes. Raseta was able to hold Shelton off, finishing first in both motos. In the last morning race, the 125cc 2stroke class, Caden Roberts was the fastest of the day. He opened up the throttle and ran 11. Chris Kirkendall, Josh Workman and Brandon Yeiter battled it out for second. Kirkendall, running 4-2, took second overall, followed by Workman. CYCLE USA, May 2012

The Saturday evening races provided more exciting action. The big bikes were first on the track. Kody Elder and Kaleb McDonald battled each other again. In the first moto, McDonald was able to pull himself into first place, followed by Elder and Joseph Hagemeier. In the second moto, Elder stepped it up again, and was able to cross the checkered line first, giving him the overall. McDonald took second followed by Clayton Aldridge. Angelique Rees, of the Women's 12 and up class, ran 11. Megan Moan wasn't far behind, many times right on Rees' rear tire in the turns. A couple of times it looked like Moan might get around Rees, but wasn't able to do it. Moan finished 2-2, followed by Emily Eubanks, Another rider who seemed to be riding really well today was AJ Wrobel. Looking comfortable in the 65cc (7-9) class, he was the fastest this evening, taking 1-1 finishes. Schyler Altherr and Clayton Strunk rode well, but couldn't catch Wrobel. New to racing, Ashley Eubanks was the only rider in the

girls 9-12 class. She got some good seat time tonight, and should be back for more racing. Wrapping things up for the evening were the Mini Quad riders. Drake Edwards, Jordanne Stichter and Logan Stanfield

were out of the gates close together. Edwards got the advantage, and had a small lead. As the race progressed, Edwards pulled ahead a little further. While Stichter was trying to pressure Edwards, Stanfield was pressuring Stichter. Stanfield

Sand Goblin Enduro Weekend run at a 12mph average so it allowed the faster riders to practice time keeping skills and the new riders to ride at a comfortable pace. The next loops the speed average was bumped up to 18. Both the first and second loop was split into two sections with a small break in the middle. The mix of speed averages and sections per loop made for a great enduro setup for new riders and up and coming kids to learn the enduro world. After the event all you could see is smiles. One of the best parts for me is hearing the stories from both young and old about how they railed through this section, zeroed this check, clipped that tree, or in my sons case, “I burnt that check by four minutes”. Another great thing is seeing all the kids go up and collect

T

he Midwest Enduro season was kicked off by the Grand Kankakee Trail Riders in Roselawn, IN. Hard to believe that the GKTR has been putting on enduros for 10 years already. It was cool to see the club relaxed (as much as an enduro club can be anyway) both before and after the race, and just enjoying their anniversary event. They had every right to enjoy it, as it was one the best they had ever put on. Family Enduro: I always get excited about the Sand Booger because I get to ride it with my son and father. For me there’s nothing like three generations enjoying themselves together. The best past is we weren’t the only family out there. Each year it seems more grandpas, dads, moms, sons, daughters, and maybe even some grandmas come out and enjoy this event. This year’s Sand Booger looked like it might be a wet one, but the rain was needed, and it stopped before the start. The trail this year was a nine mile loop that riders would ride three times (the younger classes would only do a couple loops). The first loop was 24

their trophies and once again the kids were getting handed a trophy by none other than Mr. ISDE, Jeff Fredette. Sand Goblin Enduro: The rain that came was exactly what the trail needed. I know I’m not the only one that thought the trail was about as perfect as it could get. Over the years the GKTR have been putting together an enduros that are both fun and challenging. This year the club once again found the right mix of tight, open, flowing and technical trails that covered 70+ miles. It seems every year the test sections get longer and this year was no exception with 6 test sections and most were over 10 miles long. To me the layout used this year could have been a National Enduro, it was that good.

Overall A (and 2nd Overall) for the day went to motocross convert Anthony Krivi on his YZ250. This was only his 2nd year attending the Sand Goblin. Krivi, “The dirt was awesome, it bermed up really nice. The event had some great flow and fast sections, which I liked a lot. My favorite section was section two. I just kept pushing and trying to ride a smooth fast race, with minimal mistakes, just flowing through the trees. I lost my front brakes in section four, but my Dad was able to get them back before the last section. I was super stoked with my results, with it being only my second year racing enduros. I can't thank my Dad and family enough for all the support and help they give me. I also want to thank Matt Borgic from JM Racing suspension, my bike was working awesome all day. And I'd like to thank Niehaus Cycle Sales and my enduro mentors Bryan Kahalar, Brian Niehaus, and John Roth.” The Grand Champion for the day was reigning District 14 en-

duro champ Aaron Wagner. Aaron proved why he was the champion last year by besting everyone by four minutes at the end of the day. Aaron put his Gas Gas 300R at the top of almost all the test sections. “I was looking forward to the day because I knew it was going to be tight woods trail where I could really put the low end power of my new 300 to the test. The club laid out a great course. I ripped a radiator shroud off in the first section and at the gas stop had to use some zip ties to support the radiator. In the second section I had a minor crash and when I got to the out check I was one second into the minute so I figured that crash cost me a point. Overall it was a good fun day the temperature was perfect and I was happy that the rain held off.” The club would like to thank all the riders for attending both days, and making the anniversary Sand Booger/ Sand Goblin a fun one. A big thank you to all the sponsors of the event; Moose Racing, Team Kawasaki, DP Brakes, Wiseco, FRP, Wheels for

Tots, Kersting Cycle, Imperial Waste and Recycling, Fun Mart Cycle, and Stineback.com. D22 Opens at New Hartford New Hartford, Iowa - saturday, april 21 By Missi Thede

fter three “false starts” due to weather at Hawkeye Downs and Fun Valley, New Hartford was the track to finally kick-off the 2012 District 22 race season. So along with the excitement and achievement of the first race of the year, there was even more talk about quads running at New Hartford for the first time. Quads went out first for practice and you could tell the racing was going to be exciting! With weather conditions being cold and dreary, New Hartford crew members did an excellent job of prepping the track for the start of an awesome race weekend. The first races off the gate for the season opener were the Open A and Open B classes. #176 Todd Walton took the holeshot with #158 Bryce Craig and #504 Jeremy Kress in pursuit. Kress moved up on Walton around the first corner into the rollers. Kress moved into the lead and increased his distance on Walton with Aaron King in third position. Craig got his edge on King for the third spot before the end of the moto as Kress took the win. During the second moto Walton got the holeshot with Kress in his shadow, and again taking an early lead. Walton kept the pressure on as #136 Chaz Braden and Craig also kept

In Open B ‘s first moto #28 Curt Pfalzgraf took the holeshot and paved his way to a win. David Harbold ran hard in second with Adam Choplin third, trying to gain on Pfalzgraf. First moto ended with Pfalzgraf keeping his consistent lead with Choplin second, Kyle Barry third. Second moto Jake Harnish was on Pfalzgraf’s tail and rode hard trying to pass him, but didn’t get it accomplished with Pfalzgraf pulling away leaving Harnish in second and Choplin third. Overall was Pfalzgraf, Choplin and Harnish. In the 250B class #4 Jordan Harnish swept the overall with seventeen riders in the class. Reggie Rema put pressure on Harnish, but not enough to take the lead first moto. It was anyone’s guess regarding the overall for the day with the mixed finishes. In the end Cole Hood took second, Sam Tinkey third and Mitch Simon fourth. Quad 50 riders were the first quads out on the loose Saturday and had #11 Cody Spiegelhalter and #373 Logan Rathbun taking first and second overall. All were waiting for the blast off the gate of the Quad B and Quad A Production classes. Quad

A fired off the gate and #313 Zach Harris dominated the holeshot and overall wins for the entire Quad A Open and Production weekend. With some tight racing between Harris and #81 Nick Crow on Saturday it made for a great quad-opener at NH. The Quad B start had #851 Cody Winkowitsch with the holeshot to checkers win for first moto but ended up not making it around the first corner after the second moto start with quad problems ended his race day. Overall for the day was #38 Keaton Sterk in first and #417 Gramm Meyer second. Weather conditions started going downhill after first moto, but overall with Sunday’s awesome weather it was a great race weekend: first race weekend of the season accomplished and quads at New Hartford. MAXC Opens in Canaan Canaan, Indiana - april 21 Photos by Jeff Vanasdal

T

he opening round of the 2012 AMA MAXC Racing series kicked off at Circle W Ranch in Canaan, IN. KTM’s Rory Mead took the first win of the 2012 Mid America Cross Country Series in the AA class and was joined on the podium by Toby Price and Chris Douglas. After getting canceled back in March due to Mother Nature, MAXC rescheduled the opening round for April 21st. The round featured a challenging track for racers of all skill levels. The track consisted of several creek crossings, slick up hills, wide open sections, and wooded areas. It would also prove to be a chilly day for the racers as temperatures stayed in the low 40’s with light rain showers throughout the day. Once riders rounded the first corner, the track lead racers down a chilly creek crossing then up a long uphill that had the best riders cautious about choosing which line to take. As each class got the green flag and made their way to the hills, bottlenecks began to form on the slick hillside with riders laying their bikes on almost every line. The trails were not very tight which allowed room for passing in the woods and in the field sections. New Zealand native and GNCC XC1 Pro racer Rory Mead took the win in the AA class

aboard his KTM. “The course was great, the rain sort of made the track. It made everything slippery and a little technical, I think the rocky base made the track hold up pretty good. I went down pretty hard in the first turn and clipped the corner marker, but aside from that I caught up pretty quick, and I got a good lead. It was good battling with another international rider (Toby Price).” Australian dirt bike racer Toby Price finished just one minute behind Mead. Rounding out the AA class podium was the KTM mounted Chris Douglas. In the amateur ranks, it was Austin Lee of Bedford, IN who grabbed he win in the Light A class followed by Luke Chilman, and Duell Murphy rounding out the podium. The Light B class was one of the biggest classes in attendance with twenty-five riders lining the starting gate. KTM rider Josh Keys from Scottsburg, IN took the win. Preston Weiler and Eric Douglass also took the podium in second and third. There was plenty of competition in the Youth classes. Youth riders braved the cold weather and icy waters at Circle W Ranch to find the top contenders of each class. One of the fastest names in the youth classes is Mike Witkowski who took his first win of the season in SuperMini class. Witkowski was joined on the podium by Vincent Smith and Blake Niccum. In the 85cc class it was Kayden Young who was the victor. There were over fifteen

entries in the 65cc class at the opening round. Logan McNeil from Solsberry, IN took the win on his Suzuki ahead of Lance Maschino and Kyle Prysmont. Ballance Racing/ Yamaha’s Walker Fowler and Taylor Kiser went 1-2 in the AA Quad class with Houser Racing’s Ryan Lane rounding out the podium in third. 2011 GNCC XC2 Pro-Am Champion Walker Fowler was able to endure the cold weather conditions as he rode consistent throughout the race. Fowler started around middle of the pack and quickly made his way to front with teammate Taylor Kiser. The two ran together almost the entire race until they pitted. Fowler then made the pass on Kiser to take over the first place position. “I got a fourth place start and Taylor (Kiser) started working his way up and I tucked in behind him and I was able to run good laps. When Taylor fueled there was a three way battle for first and me and Taylor were supposed to pit and leave together at the same time so it was clean racing, but Ryan (Lane)

John Chaille finished second in the open a class.

was right there and if we would of waited on each other we would have been in trouble,” said Fowler after he took the win.

Action Hot Already at Joliet wilmington, Illinois - april 7 By Josh Rud More photos at www.ShiftOnePhoto.com

A

pril 7th marked the season opener of the Arsenal Series at Joliet MX. The day started out sunny with some great weather, only to turn to cloudy with rain looming in the distance. This of course didn’t slow any of the action, which we had plenty of this evening. The racing was fierce, even the heat races had some great battles keeping everyone’s attention! The first race of the evening brought 250C to the line with twelve riders. Matt Gregory charged hard to get out front with the holeshot with Trent Poska on the #2 Yamaha holding on to second and Cody Johnson in third. Gregory and Poska continued to battle back and forth through-out the rest of the race. On the last lap Gregory had a bobble which allowed Poska to pass and come across the line for the win. Gregory held on for second place while Johnson came across third. Andrew Friebele made a good showing through the race battling for third, ultimately taking fourth place, with Alec Leasure

rounding out the top five. 85 Open was next up to keep the pace of the night going. Excited riders pinning it off the gates makes for some crowd pleasing action, and Troy Mead came out ahead with the holeshot. Gage Pace was holding on strong in second. The real battle was for third as the entire pack was bunched together, led by Karson Kokotan. Mead had a mechanical issue allowing Pace and Kokotan to pass him. After the dust settled Pace took first place, with Kokotan second, Mead third, and Bret Dannis fourth ahead of Nicky Shelton. The 250B race made for some great action as the lights came on and sun went down. August Miksys came out with the holeshot with Harvey Bushby right next to him and Brian Krohn breathing down their necks in third. Bushby had a great race with Miksys, and was able to pass him in the air to take over first. Coming over the finish Kyle Poska came in fourth with David Davis holding on for fifth. Open A, B, and C shaped up for great racing with those looming rain clouds finally making

250C class winner trent Poska.

their presence known. Open A had Jeremy Smith out in front for the holeshot with Rick Ivey close behind him. The two of them rode hard keeping right next each other the entire race with Smith holding on to first. Right behind them in Open B was Mark Seeforth in front, Aj Miksys second and Brandon Domark sitting in third. After battling hard Miksys was able to get around Seeforth grabbing an inside line and coming across the line for the win. Open C started out with a massive pile-up right at the first turn. This allowed Curt Horrigan to get out in front with Nick Waszak on his Yamaha in second and Tim Evans third. After a few

laps Horrigan and Waszak were starting to check out from the rest of the pack when literally out of no where Skyler Harkless on his Yamaha came right up on them. Harkless flew past Waszak. Then on the last lap Horrigan got pushed to the outside while Harkless passed him for the lead. Waszak was able to capitalize on the moment and got into second. Waszak after the race, “I remember looking behind me when I was going over the finish line table after the first lap to see if there was anyone close to me and the closest guy was a good quarter of the way back. When he (Harkless) passed me I was so confused as I didn’t see him coming. Then he about took out

the guy that I was battling for first with which got me back up to second. 125 2-stroke came to the line with everyone ready to get their first night of racing under their belt. Brian Krohn on his KTM stuck the holeshot with Kyle Moore coming around the outside of everyone to settle into second, and Kyle Poska grabbing third. In the middle of the race Poska bobbled, dropping back to the end of the pack, pushing Eric Mack into third place. On the last lap Mack was able to get around Moore taking the fast outside line through the sweeper to take second place and Poska got around his brother Trent Poska to move into fourth. The checkered dropped with Krohn taking first, Mack second, Moore third, Kyle Poska in fourth and Trent Poska fifth. SuperMini was up next with Chad Saultz looking to get his outdoor season started after a great Areanacross season. This year he placed first in points for Supermini Sr, and 85cc 12-15. When the gates dropped Saultz came out with the holeshot with Brian Krohn second and Gage Pace third. Saultz and Krohn created a gap from the pack putting down some really fast laps. The last lap of the race Saultz ran into a lapper giving Krohn the opportunity he was fighting for, passing him for the win. Gage held onto third the entire race, and Saultz finished second. 14-24 was an eventful race. Jon Williams came out fast to take the holeshot with Harvey Bushby second and Mark Seeforth in third. Aj Miksys was hard on their trail when Skyler Harkless came into the first turn hot and took himself and Miksys down, allowing Pete Hinich to take over in fourth place. Bushby was running a fast race, but came down from a jump and landed right on a +40 class rider’s rear fender (combined moto) which sent him hard into the dirt. This allowed Seeforth to take second place behind Williams and Hinich third, with Miksys and Harkless coming in fourth and fifth. +30A and 30B also had a staggered start tonight with Billy Loy taking the holeshot in 30A

with Alex Kruk in second and Larry Bank third. In 30B Greg Pollak came out with the holeshot with Brian Carey. 30A had some fighting for position throughout the race with the results ending the way they started. In 30B Pollak and Carey carried themselves out front for a pretty substantial lead. Towards the end of the race Ryan Speirer went down putting him to the back of the pack. This allowed Curt Horrigan to grab the third spot, while catching up with Carey giving him a good fight trying to take second. Ultimately the race ended with Pollak taking the win, Carey in second and Horrigan third. The season opener for Joliet was a great night of racing and everyone had a great time! With 177 entries there was plenty of competition out there. The rain was never a huge issue and track was amazing all night. Stateline Opens D17 Stadium Season Pecatonica, Il - March 31 By Jo Utech Photos by Maggie Utech

W

hen the dates for the 2012 Stadiumcross series were posted, I thought March 31 was a little early, anticipating cold temperatures and wet conditions. Who would've guessed it to be the complete opposite. With one of the warmest months of March on record, close to 200 entries filled the season opener at Stateline MX. Saturday morning began with an open practice on a picture perfect groomed track. And for those who wanted to sharpen their skills from the winter's break, you could participate in a class from Club 57 motocross school. As first motos got underway, it was clear the spectators were in for some fierce and intense racing. As the thirteen riders in the Open A class headed out of the gate, it was Malatia, Utech, Markwardt, Justin Kelly, and Dan Sanders around the first corner. It wasn't long before Markwardt found his place out front, with Malatia putting the pressure on! Bar to bar, plastic to plastic, the contest for first was on. Malatia and Markwardt swapped positions throughout the entire race before the checkered flag went to Markwardt. Utech and Kelly had a battle of their own. Kelly took an inside line to get past Utech into the straightaway, but with the twist of the throttle on his TZR backed Yamaha, Utech was back in front of Kelly. With two laps left, they were side-by-side again before Kelly tucked to the inside to make the pass. Catalani made the pass on Sanders to secure his position just before the finish. Robbie Hyson grabbed the holeshot in the 125cc 2-stroke class followed by Connor Robinson, Ricki Williams, Brian Krohn, and Kyle Nelson. Robinson challenged Hyson and got passed him. Hyson made a move to re-take the position in the whoops section, but Robinson block passes him at the corner. Hyson didn’t give up, passing Robinson in the straightaway in the next lap, then going on for the win. Robinson took second as Jordan Mackiewicz muscled his way into third ahead of Brian Krohn and Kyle Nelson. In 4-Wheel A, Ethan Pickard led around the first turn, chased by Devin Krontz, Richard Olson, Dillan Boeke and Brian Perteete. Pickard pulled away, and maintained his position to take the win as second went to Krontz. Boeke got past Olson for third. Noah Taylor from Waterman won the 85Jr class. Shane Reilly took home second as Kawasaki rider #102 Hunter Grampp fought his way into third after a lousy start. Nolan Dickinson followed him in for fourth. While watching the motos, I started talking to Cody Donna, a rookie in the 65Jr class. He told me that he was going to race all of District 17 Stadiumcross races, with a goal of being the champion. I asked Cody if he had any sponsors to help him reach that goal, and he said," I get help from my dad, Pete and my mom, Kirsten and grandpa Dennis and his grandma Sheila, and my other grandma." He also likes coming to the races, because he meets new friends and is having fun! I told him, "me too"! Continued on page 38 CYCLE USA, May 2012

Quad riders looking to grow participation Casey, Illinois - april 8 By Nadine Darling and Phyllis Blume Photos by Phyllis Blume Photography

otoX Outcasts ATV Club hosted its first race of the twelve race series at Lincoln Trail Motosports in Casey, IL on Easter Sunday. With over $3000 in cash and prizes to be awarded at the end of the series, racers from three states came together for a great day of racing. The A class was stacked with some fierce competition. Dusty Daugherty (3-2), Jeff Agnew (1-3) and Dustin Rhymer (2-1) battled both motos. Many lead changes and tense moments had fans on their toes the whole time. This class had several equally matched riders and will be very exciting to watch as the series progresses. Trivette Scales and Timothy Schultz dominated the B class with first and second place finishes both motos. JaRed Clemons made the race after a late night replacing the front end of his quad. JaRed managed a sixth place finish in class C. Look for him to move up a few spots as he gets the quad dialed in. Duncan Fincher won the class ahead of Ethan Glidewell. With fewer tracks allowing quads to race, MotoX Outcasts was formed to bring the quad riders together for more competition and better payout. The next race will be May 6th

Depending on who you trust to perform your suspension work, revalving could mean little more than changing $10 worth of metal shims. At Pro-action our approach has always been more thought out. We develop, produce, and test our valve body system (included FREE in every fork revalve) to work together with springs, oil heights, shim stacks, and clicker settings to give you the very best

results possible. Even though our system is more advanced, and costs us more money to do it this way, it is almost always less expensive to you. Why risk your safety and your results? Few suspension companies can lay claim to our longevity (since 1977)...and there’s a reason for that. Call us today and find out why!

fter weeks of unseasonably warm and dry weather everyone at Aztalan feared a shift in Mother Nature’s mood just before the start of the season in April. Luckily she didn’t throw any rain or snow at the 375 entries gathered to race on Easter Sunday. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect to show off the track changes, and truckloads of sand spread over the track. Several riders were surprised in practice to find deep sand in areas that in the past turned into hardpack as the day wore on. Aidan McCormick grabbed the season’s first holeshot as he led the 50Sr class out of the gates, just ahead of Mitchell Malaney and Dylan Duclos. Duclos got by Malaney midway through lap three. Lap four was a running battle between McCormick and Duclos for the lead as they changed positions several times. DuClos finally was able to secure the lead early in lap five, and immediately stretched out a gap on the rest of the class. Malaney slipped past McCormick on the white flag lap. Duclos jumped out front in moto two to take the win ahead of Malaney, and then Sam Mayer who finished the moto in third to edge out McCormick for the final podium step. John Stewart led the Non-current class around the holeshot while Craig Flancher and Jake Seipel battled for second. Flancher secured the spot before

thomas Dretzka relaxes after winning overalls in +40, +45, and +50.

the finish. Stewart was first around the holeshot again in moto two with Matthew Kohlmeyer edging out Seipel and Flancher. Both Seipel and Flancher moved past Kohlmeyer before their first trip over the plateau. Flancher was able to catch and pass Stewart on lap three, but couldn’t hang onto the position as Stewart slipped past before the finish to take the moto win and overall. Flancher went 2/2 for second overall with Seipel (3/3) third. When the Women’s class hit the holeshot in moto one Jade Wennlund used the inside line to edge out Ashley Densow for the position. Densow was quick to get past Wennlund as did Sierra Dortch before the first lap was over. Densow held onto the lead with Dortch in second and Tammy Flemming moving into third. Densow jumped out front at the gate drop for moto two and stayed there to the finish. Wennlund was running second but Dortch and Flemming got by her midway through lap one. Despite, some early pressure Dortch was able to stay in front of Flemming and by lap three was putting a gap between them. Densow (1/1) took the overall with Dortch (2/2) and Flemming (3/3) finishing off the top three. In the +25A class Matthew Maier started his season out right by rocketing down the start straight on his new Kawasaki to grab the moto one holeshot. Greg Hochmuth and Travis Schedler followed around the corner bar to bar, a bike length back. Maier CYCLE USA, May 2012 41

stretched out his lead while Tyler Smulders moved past Schedler, but couldn’t get by Hochmuth before the checkers flew. The moto two holeshot was closer as Maier slipped out to the far outside, but used his momentum to edge out Hochmuth at the corner. By the time everyone hit the plateau Maier was opening some breathing room and Hochmuth had Smulders right on his rear tire. Hochmuth did everything to protect his lines, but a lap later Smulders found an opening and slipped past. Maier (1/1) was the overall winner while Smulders turned his 3/2 finishes into the second spot to edge out Hochmuth’s 2/3. DJ Gritzmacher dominated in the 65cc class as he led both motos from the gate to the checkers without much pressure. James Schmeling was running second with Bryanne Wolf right on him on lap one but Schmeling stalled in the corner after and was back to eighth position before he got going again. Wolf was running second until he bobbled on lap three and dropped back to fourth, leaving the door open for Braden Warner to finish in second just ahead of Schmeling who had put in a hard charge fighting his way back into third. Gritzmacher again checked out early in moto two while Warner held off Wolf for the second place finish in the moto. When Unlimited A took their first gate drop Joseph Dretzka was out front at the holeshot with Joshua Philbrick close. Dretzka held off Philbrick’s moto-long charge all the way to the finish. Tyler Smulders had his

gary Behrens and Jim Beckman (165) go for it in +40.

took the overall with a 2/1 day while Smulders (3/3) was second and Dylan Ziolkowski (5/2) finished third. Veteran rider Thomas Dretzka had a great start to his season as he dominated in +40+, +45+, and +50 by grabbing all six moto wins. In +50 Richard Crouthers beat him to the holeshot but Dretzka moved out front in the west end. In moto two Dretzka edged out Jeff Ramsay at the holeshot. Mike Boyden moved into second before the plateau but Ramsay fought back on lap three to solidify

hands full toward the end of the moto as he battled with Sam Long to protect third. In moto two Long edged Philbrick for the holeshot. Dretzka fought back from a fourth spot and as he and Long battled for the lead they came together over a jump and both went down. Long pulled off with a broken nose while Dretzka remounted and tried to catch the new leader Philbrick. Dretzka went down a couple laps later just before the plateau and ended his day. Dylan Ziolkowski went after Smulders and on lap four took over second place where he stayed to the end. Philbrick

his second place finish. In moto one of +40 Paul Philbrick led at the holeshot but Dretzka jumped past him over the plateau to take the lead. Philbrick held on to finish the moto in second just ahead of Eric Horcher. Kevin Yde grabbed the moto two holeshot with Horcher sitting in second. Dretzka battled his way to the front by the time the lap was half over and held on for the win. Horcher held on for second just in front of Philbrick. Dretzka commented later “I’m glad +50 went first for me today because it gave me a little time to get used to the track. They threw a bunch of sand on it. The sand was awesome and more technical, so it was pretty cool. There were seventeen guys in +50 so it was a great time. Crouthers got the first holeshot but he swung out wide and I was able to tuck inside in one of the early turns and I got by. The second moto I got the holeshot and was able to check out a bit. Next

up was +40 and there were some new 40 year olds in there. I’m 51, and that really made me step up my pace. I couldn’t check out on those guys, they are younger and pretty fast. In +45 Daryl Willing and I hit the first jump side by side. When we came into that new sand it was pretty sketchy, we were both swapping. I was on the outside as we came to the plateau and was able to grab another gear to clear the plateau over him. It was a great time, the track was awesome, it was muddy, slippery and the sand added a whole new dimension in places. I loved it here today; it was a great day for me. Thanks to Sportland 2, they put me on a Kawasaki this year and the bikes are great, and easy to ride. Also HJC Helmets, Feel Good Clothing, Scott Goggles, Diamond Racing Wheels, and Dunlop tires.” Justin Wolf was first onto the track in Sportsman B/C moto one with constant pressure from

Tylor Skodras. Skodras dove into every line he could think of but Wolf was able to defend his lead to the checkers. In a repeat Wolf grabbed the moto two holeshot with Skodras in pursuit. This time Skodras was able to make the pass on the white flag lap to steal the moto and overall wins. Sam Long had a good run in both Open A and 250A as he won all four motos (despite a broken nose from unlimited A). In Open A moto one Long grabbed the holeshot edging out Erik Utech with both Matthew Maier and Joey Dretzka right on his rear wheel. Long was able to pull a small gap on the class while Maier settled into second. Joshua Philbrick slipped into third until lap three when Dretzka got by and held onto the position to the finish. In moto two Long was first at the holeshot as he once again began to put a gap on the rest of the class. At the checkers it was Long winning

and taking the overall while Maier (2/3) was second overall and Dylan Ziolkowski (4/4) third. After the day was over Long told me, “This is the first race of the year and I am just getting on the Hondas, so it was a good test. In the first moto of Open A I got a great holeshot and was able to just ride a clean solid race to get the win. The second moto was pretty much the same; I got a clean holeshot and was able to stay smooth. I had Philbrick all over me and we went at it for most of the race, I couldn’t shake him and he was riding great. In 250A I got a great start again and picked good lines and good choices since the track was a little slick in places and ran out front for the win. Second moto the track was really choppy and I still had my Arenacross suspension on so it was really stiff. I just had to hang on and ride a smart race to get that win. I would like to thank Interstate Sawing, Southeast Sales, Williams Motorwerx, and NoFear.” Once again Aztalan showed the riders that the club is committed to make racing even better. Thanks to an almost perfect day of weather combined with the track changes, everyone had a great time. Thanks to everyone that chose to include Aztalan in their Easter day plans, and we hope to see you all back in May when the club holds a double header event with Triplecross points on Saturday and District 16 points on Sunday May 13. Quad riders highlighted at D&D Rochester, Indiana - april 15 By Becky Stichter

R

eads Racing Unlimited held round one of their ATV championship series at D&D this weekend. Sunday's weather was great, and the track was dry and fast. The Youth Quad Modified class was the first on the track, and Blake Sarver was out of the gates first in both motos. Both times he was able to pull ahead of the others, finishing a strong 1-1. Behind Sarver, Jacob Clingaman, Davison Emery, and Maddison Guyer were battling it out for second place. In the first moto, Guyer pulled ahead of the others and finish second. In moto two, Clingaman hit the throttle a little harder, and took a second place finish, giving Clingaman himself second overall. In a double gate drop, the Quad A and B riders were next. For Quad A action, in the first moto, Eric Lapato and Matthew Sanders were out of the gates quad to quad. Coming out of the woods, Sanders was ahead. As they got further onto the track, Lapato was able to get around Sanders. Lapato couldn't be stopped after that, and took the win. With several position changes throughout the race, Mike Behel was able to grab a second place finish, followed by Andy Hedrick. In the second moto, Lapato had some difficulties and was a DNF. Behel took advantage, riding hard and fast to win the moto, followed by Ryan Handshoe and Hedrick. With the very sandy track, large berms formed in the corners, and they seemed to be a challenge for many today, causing people to lose time if they got caught up in one. For the Quad B group, Yamaha rider,

#865 Matthew sanders in Quad a.

Jesse Hernendez finished a solid 1-1 as Garrett Miller and Gilford Miller had a tough battle for second. With the two Millers riding nearly quad to quad at times, a small mistake would have been costly. In the first moto, Gilford was able to edge out Garrett. In the second moto, Garrett stepped it up, taking second, finishing 3-2, for a second overall. The Mini Quad riders had the largest quad class of the day. Brogan Guyer rode lightening fast, taking an easy 1-1 finish. In moto one, Davison Emery was riding in second, followed by Maddison Guyer and Logan Stanfield. Later in the race, Stanfield got past Maddison Guyer and Emery, to take a second place finish. In the second moto, Maddison Guyer had a better start, and was second in line behind brother Brogan the entire race. The Mini Quad Jr. class was the last class of quads on the track today. ham won both motos ahead of Bodie Derrer. All of the usual bike classes were run today as well. The 50cc (7-8) class riders had a big challenge against all the sand, but once they got the feel for the track, they started to speed up. Trey Gibson, mounted on a Cobra, finished 1-1. With some good competition from behind, Gavin George and David Hagerman finished 2-3 both motos. Another rider that was lightening fast today was Jacob White of the 250C class. From the time he was out of the gate, to the checkered flag, he was full throttle, winning both motos. In the first moto, Devin Burks had a fast start and was out of the woods section first. White passed him going into the back straight away, but Burks kept on the throttle and didn't let White forget he was right behind. Burks finished 2-2. There was a good battle behind the leaders for third place, with Nick Myers grabbing it, with a 53 finish. KTM rider, Devin Burks of the Open C class opened it up to run 1-1 in this class today. Ian Wilmington finished a solid 2-2. Nick Myers and Anthony Wajasinski had a great battle for third, with Myers taking it, finishing 4-3. In the +40 class, Todd White took charge and handled the track without difficulty, finishing 1-1. Rob Watkins, Brad Kopsho, and Rob Talbot battled it out for second, with Watkins taking it, with his 2-3 finishes. Jordan Opens SX Season Jordan, Minnesota - april 21 By Dusty Rose

I

t was a cool evening in Jordan, Minnesota. It had been drizzling on and off all day, but Lee Theis and his Motokazie crew were determined to get the season opener in the books. The trailers were pulling in, the bikes were unloaded and the racers were ready to start the 2012 SX season. With 100+ entries, the national anthem was played and the gates were ready to drop. In the 85cc 12-15 class, #236 Cody Wroe took the holeshot followed by Josh Weis and Max Anderson. Wroe checked out fast and had clear sailing to the checkered flag followed by Weis and Anderson. The rain held off and in the second moto, Wroe again cruised to the moto and class win with Weiss and Anderson following. In the 85cc 7-11 class #138 Seth Carpenter led the way with Pierce Bedell right on his back wheel. Bedell passed Carpenter before the first lap was completed. Bedell had his eye on the finish line, but ran into some bad luck and Carpenter retook the lead to go on to the win. The second moto finished the same with Carpenter taking the checkered flag ahead of Bedell and Cade Marten. The 250B class gave us some thrills and spills. With the riders ... the going hard into the first berm, Mike Will jumped out to take the lead followed by Nate Nordmeyer, Nathyn Trenary and Conner Cunningham. Reid Garhardt, Trent Kubes followed as Walker Kruse took a tumble. Cunningham and Trenary were battling for third when second place Nordmeyer went

the Quad riders had fun in the mud.

The second moto for the 250B class was just as exciting, with Will hitting the holeshot, Cunningham on his Kawasaki settling for second and Kruse riding his 125 KTM in third. Nuke Series Easter kick-off Byron, Illinois - april 8

T

he 2012 Barone Nuclear Series at Motosports Park kicked off on Easter Sunday with well over 350 entries, and a great day of racing. Perfect weather, a bunch of sunshine, good crowd and a track that had more wood chips and sand added made for an exciting day. The 14-24 class kicked off the action. Making the trip down from Barneveld, WI was Cody Williams, who railed through the first turn to grab the holeshot and early lead. Kyle Collalti had a good start in second, with Beau Hayes, Gary Beeman, Greg Sassi and Brice Lorenz leading the twenty-two rider class. As the laps ticked away, Collalti slipped back to fifth while Williams pulled a few bikes lengths over the others. Hayes moved into second early, while Beeman and Sassi went at each other all the way to the end, with Beeman finishing third. Greg Sassi got off to a much better start in the second moto and led the pack through the first lap. Williams and Joshua Marescalco were close as Steven Ceithamer and Randy Mclaughlin filled the top five. Sassi held on for the win as the top couple riders spaced out a little. Half way into the moto, Brice Lorenz worked into fifth behind Ceithamer where they finished. Williams’ 1-2 motos were all he needed for the overall ahead of Sassi (4-1) and Hayes (2-6). Beeman was unable to start the second moto, having been seriously injured while running in his Open A first moto. Beeman was flown off site with what appeared to be a back injury. We all wish him the very best, and he was in the thoughts of everyone as the day continued. Zeno Molteni rode his Suzuki to a perfect 1-1 in the +30B/C class for the overall. After grabbing the first moto holeshot, he went on to never be challenged. Marcus Hefty ran in third the first lap, as Jeromy Barone closed the gap. Just as they were coming to finish lap 50

two, Barone dove under Hefty for second as Tim Vanbeveran locked down fourth ahead of Martin Mecum for the final running order in the lead group. In the second moto things were more complicated for Molteni. While in the lead, he went down and opened the door for Barone and Vanbeveran. Molteni got up and found his way into second, but Barone gave him fits for two laps as they swapped spots in a fight for the win. Molteni eventually made a good line stick, and went on to win in the last lap. The 85cc classes always put on a good show at Nuke events. Today, in the 85Sr class it was our local star, and national champion Chase Sexton leading the way from the gate drop to the checkered in both motos. Behind Sexton, it was an exciting race.

Nick Wallace finished the first lap in second, but then went down, and dropped back a few spots. Next, Gage Pace had problems in the new sand section dropping out of the top five as Zack Tatar was second, with a recovering Wallace all over his rear fender. Nickolas Lorenz and Anthony Wallace were filling out the top five. Nick Wallace got back into second and Lorenz continued his push forward, getting by Tatar late in the moto for third. EVS/ Tom Zont Racing backed Nick Wallace after the moto. “I felt good, I was behind Chase and then I pushed the front end and slid out. I got up and just worked back up. I’d like to thank my mom, dad, and Tommy Hofmaster and his family.” Sexton ran out front in the second moto as well. Nick Wallace was into second coming out of turn three and then did a great job of running just off the pace of Sexton, for an easy second place finish. Gage Pace had to work his way up to finish third after starting back in seventh. He made his way around Lorenz and

I caught back up and then worked up to third. I made most of my passes in the corners, but went all over the place to catch up.” The 85Jr class was quick as well... although the racing had less position changes up front. Eddie Norred took both moto wins on his Yamaha ahead of Tyler Evensen and Noah Taylor. Justin Mack also rode well to finish fourth in both motos in the eleven rider class. The Open C first moto was a fun one... Matt Hefel grabbed the holeshot, but then tucked the front end in the second corner, bottling up a bunch of riders in the process. Matt Simmons was first to find his way around the carnage, pulling ahead of David Rogers and Neil Knottnerus. As they went up the first uphill into the jump section, Rogers took over the lead, and soon Knottnerus was by Simmons for second. The freight train was a

Hefel took the overall (2-1) ahead of Sewers (3-3) and Knottnerus (1-5). Hefel after the second moto, “First moto, I missed the rut in the second corner and tipped over. It was bad as I couldn’t get the bike up right away. I just got back up and pushed as hard as I could. I never really knew where I was at until I got off the track and my parents said I was up to second... and I thought that was awesome. I used some way outside lines and just stayed on it, and kept going everywhere the others weren’t. This moto I got a good start out front and it was a lot easier. The track is getting really good. My rear break started to go on the third lap, so I was holding on with all I had. I got pushed hard, but this was a great way to start the season.” Mays, “I got a pretty good holeshot from the way inside. Ty got out front of me and I tried to put some moves on him as I could. The track is really good. This is my first outdoor race on the new KTM from Southeast Sales, and it went well. We had a great three way race so I was careful not to make any mistakes.” Zont finished third, Joseph Dalzell fourth after a huge effort to get by Zont came up short. Johnathan Six worked up, and filled out the top five. In the second moto Six pulled a good start and led all the way to the checkered flag. He had plenty of pressure, first from Mays before he tipped over and dropped to third, then from Dalzell. Tyrrell came from way outside the top five to finish third after stuffing his way past Mays in the final lap. Six, “My TZR Honda was working great and I got off to a great start. Joey was on me at the end there and riding awesome, so I just tried to get in a rhythm and win.”

Tyrell’s charge back made all the difference as he took the overall (1-3) ahead of Six’s (5-1) and Dalzell (4-2). Mays put it all together on his KTM in the twenty-five rider Open A class, going 2-1 for the overall ahead of Six (1-3) and Tyrrell (3-2). The 250B class was one of the biggest of the day with thirtytwo riders. After a lot of juggling in the first lap, Cody Vanbuskirk was out front with Beau Hayes, Steven Ceithamer, Derek Whitcomb and Bradly Neys trying to break away. The order held until Whitcomb ran into problems and dropped to the back half of the pack. Neys took over fourth as Vanbuskirk won, a ways ahead of Hayes. In the second moto, Derek Whitcomb made a statement. After finishing back in seven-

teenth in the first outing, he had something to prove, and led every lap of the moto. “I got a perfect start and after that, I just kept it pinned, and it all worked out. It is getting rough out there, and some good ruts so it is really nice. I’d like to thank my dad, FHK, Brian White Motors and Decal Works for all their help.” Brady Neys ran in second ahead of Latour all moto, giving him the overall (4-2). Ceithamer finished back in sixth, but third overall as first moto winner Vanbuskirk ran into problems, and ended the moto in twelfth. It was a great start to the new season in Byron. Like so many openers this year, the weather was great, and the racing showed that a lot of the riders have been out riding, and are all tuned up. Everyone was on their game already. Sandy Oaks D17 Hare Scramble Keithsburg, Illinois - March 25 By Jordyn Minnaert

T

he Sandy Oaks Campground in Keithsburg, Illinois, hosted WFO Promotion’s second race of the 2012 season. WFO Promotions, ran by Ron Whipple and Stan Redell, had designed a trail on the sandy ground that was long enough to prevent it from becoming blown out by too many laps, yet short enough that any kind of rider could get around with no problem. Sandy Oaks presented round 1 of the season, this time the track was ridden backwards. It was a day of high temps as riders were placed in rows, seconds apart for the starts that would lead them into a tight left turn, and then into the five mile course in the woods. The unseasonably warm and dry for March made for dusty conditions. The first couple laps offered time for riders to loosen up their muscles and get used to the sand, overall winner twists, turns, and Zach sulzberger.

whoops. This track was straight sand. The most challenging part for most of the riders on this day was the whoops. Sandy Oaks’ course had a few sandy whoop regions that made it challenging for everyone. This can be one of the toughest races all year, and it’s always at the beginning of the season, which makes it that much harder. Riders show up, try their best to gain points in this series, and

get in shape for the season ahead. 197 riders made it through the day. In the AA class, Ryan Lenth was the first to make the holeshot corner, and into the woods. Due to a minor head slam on a tree, Lenth pulled off the track about 45 minutes into the race. Cody Bollinger, who got second overall, “the race was good, tough and with some deep sand and deep whoops. I had a good battle
