From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman By the time you read this our 2017 season will be underway. With luck our winter is behind us and we can move forward without weather hassles. There are several changes for this season. We have also had several event date changes since our annual sanction meeting. One of the big changes in motocross is lowering the number of events required to qualify for awards. For 2017 you will need only 10 events to qualify for year end awards and standings. Another motocross change involves several of our motocross promoters working together as a group to sweeten the pot for award eligible racers. There will be a new 250F at the end of the season. To qualify for the give away a racer has to be award eligible and attend both Featured Motocross events. The plan will be to hold the drawing between sets of motos at the second Featured event. Look for more on this exciting news as the season progresses. We will also keep all the details on the website. It has been nice to have the supercross season over the winter to keep us interested. District 23 has an impressive contingent of racers on the circuit. The east series features Alex Martin, Jerry Robin, Jesse Wentland, Zach Williams, Gannon Audette, and in the SX class Joe Perron along with the Champ Ryan Dungey. West coast lites has Jeremy Martin in tenth despite missing 2 events

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... due to a concussion. Not bad for a state with six months of winter and not much population when compared to most other states. Take pride in the fact that you come from an area with a work ethic that shows results like this. We have been known as the “The State of Hockey” now we can also claim “The State of Motocross”. Indianhead Motorcycle Club is hosting the National Hillclimb event at their club grounds in Red Wing MN. Over the past few years riders from Minnesota and Wisconsin have pretty much dominated this event. The Norsemen MC are promoting the area’s first Sprint Enduro, this will take place at the Norsemen Club facility. This event requires less land and consists of racing shorter loops numerous times. Off road racers you need to give this a try as it will really be a lot of fun. Remember to watch the website to apply for the Fly Bucks that our Sponsor Western Power Sports and Fly have provided to our members. Thanks to Fly for the support of our sport at the amateur level. There’s no new district business to report at this time. We continue to plan for our 50th anniversary next summer. Again watch the website for details on this important landmark. ven after a mild winter, 255 racers had enough cabin fever to brave the sand whoops of Keithsburg for the 2017 District 17 season opener/ Round 1 of the and WFO Hare Scramble
Championships. The weather cooperated uncharacteristically with temps reaching 65+ degrees! One of the changes for 2017, is the Steelhorse Innovations Holeshot Award. Three random classes per event will get the chance to win a free gate entry, provided by Steelhorse Innovations.

The morning started with the 65cc, 85cc, Supermini and Women’s classes. Picking off where he ended last season, Buddy Fortune, aboard his KX100 led the Supermini class from start to finish, also finishing first overall in the 45 minute race. Jayson Crawford and Trevor Keogh rounded out the allKawasaki podium. In the 85cc class, Easton Morgan’s off-season preparation showed, with him taking the win by about thirty seconds over Elijah Berryman. Lake Plowman finished third. Darcie Graham took the Women’s class win over Husqvarna rider Ashley Hall and Kawasaki-mounted Rochelle Longstreth. On the mini-course, Honda rider Travis Lentz came out swinging in the 50cc 4-6 class to take the win ahead of Max and Cooper Lair. In the 50cc 7-8 class Jake Hasten took top honors over Brady Dillbeck and Austin Burns, one of the few riders to bump up to the Senior class for 2017. Kawasaki rider Cameron Walker took the checkered first in 65cc Beginner. In the morning C class event, Jayson Crawford grabbed the overall on his way to the 86-200C class victory. 4.5 minutes back was Derik Tippie as KTM-mounted Parker Townsend rounded out the podium. In the twenty-one-rider Open C class, Keegan Minnaert took top honors over Owen Rome and Michael Snyder. The sixteen rider AA class had Illinois’ top hare scramble riders, along with some fast guys from Iowa, Indiana and Minnesota. Blake Ryan ripped the holeshot aboard his KTM 300 as last year’s Open A champ Colten Zuidema was second into the woods in his AA debut, followed by Austin Wells, making his return from a knee injury, and the rest of the AA field. Through the first few laps there was plenty of dicing for positions between Ryan, Zuidema, Wells, Colt Converse, Cody Bollinger who is making his return to the series after a small hiatus, Zack Sulzberger who is back after a string of injuries and Minnesota fast-guy Nicholas Swenson. Converse and Sulzberger found their way to the front during the first couple laps and put on quite the race for most of the afternoon. Sulzberger would eventu-

ally go down and a misjudgment in fuel hurt his finishing position. Wells inherited second but blisters on his hands eventually let Bollinger reel him in and make the pass with two laps to go. Then right before the white flag lap Bollinger made a small mistake in a corner and went down, giving second back to Wells where they finished. Converse held on to win the overall. Matt McDonald crawled through the pack to finish fourth and Blake Ryan would filled out the top five. In Open A, TJ Nees took the win on his KTM 200cc over Hall’s Husqvarna rider Jarred Hall and KTM-mounted Ethan Olson. The 98-250B class saw Alex Parks take the win over Zac Downey and James Adkisson. Last year’s Quad A class champion, Shea Dickson proved that he will be the guy to beat again in 2017, taking the win
and was the only rider to make seven laps. Second place in the twenty-one rider class was awarded to Des Moines, Iowa’s Travis Brandt, ahead of Riley Bruggeman. ear record warm temps helped usher in the third round of the popular Cedar Lake Arena’s 2017 Indoor Series. It may have been early February, but surely felt like spring - and the racing inside on the well prepped track was as hot as ever with nearly 200 entries. Kai Morgan put his Cobra out front in the 50cc 7-8 class off the line, and never
looked back in moto one. Fellow Cobra rider Cade Groen ran a solid second the entire time as Jayden Adams and James Schaffer followed through the first two laps. Coming up through the pack, Cain Larson passed both Schaffer and Adams in one straight during the third lap. On the next lap Wyatt Hastings moved past Adams for fifth to set the final order in the twelve rider field. Morgan left no doubt in moto two, motoring away for another convincing win. Groen ran a comfortable second as well.
Adams started well in third, and found himself the target of both Hastings and Schaffer all moto. With two laps to go, Hastings found a spot to make his way around Adams for third and they finished that way. The 50cc 4-8 Injected class saw a good battle over the win right from the start. Sammy Toupal led Cash Wilsey, Louis Oswald and Tucker Couette through the first whoop section. By the second lap, the leaders had opened a small gap on Oswald. Wilsey was tucking into an inside line after the finish line plateau and on the second lap went under Toupal, but into the next bowl corner Toupal came right back and passed him back. From that point, the two pulled side by side several times. With the white flag out, Wilsey once again went under Toupal in the same corner. This time Toupal couldn’t re-take the lead in the next section and Wilsey rode to the win. Gunner Burke passed Couette late in the moto for fourth. Wilsey was hot in moto two and led every lap for his second win of the day. With Toupal out early, Oswald, Burke and Couette ran 2-4 right from the start. Tucker Batzel went 7-5 for fifth overall. The 65cc 7-9 class saw a wild first lap. Cambridge, MN’s Brady Karolevitz led off the line with Kai Morgan all over his rear wheel. Morgan slipped past, but then soon after went down in a bowl corner. Karolevitz was right behind him and

also hit the ground. As the two got up and struggled to free their bikes, the pack raced past. Cade Groen was out front with Milo Mass now leading Waylon Hastings and Braxton Kragenbrag. The order held until late in the moto, as Kragenbrag slipped by Hastings. Karolevitz, once untangled worked back up to fifth as Morgan fought back to seventh. In the second moto, Hastings and Maas both went down off the starting line in separate falls, so the results were bound to be shaken up at the end. Morgan put it all together this time, and shined out front for the win ahead of Jamison Mutcscler. As good as Morgan rode, Mutcscler held pace all moto. Karolevitz quickly took over third to finish there ahead of first moto winner Groen. With the crazy results, Groen’s 1-4 motos took the overall ahead of Morgan (7-1) and Karolevitz (5-3). The +30 Vet class had a nice eleven rider group come off the gate for the first moto, with Marshal Berns putting his Yamaha into the lead. Once

there, Berns was unstoppable. The others kept him honest, but the race was his to lose. Brad Cunningham was second with 50cc rider Kayden Brandenburg finished fifth overall in the 4-6 class.
Mark Halquist pushing right away. Just as Halquist went to make his move into second, from fourth Benny Vancleve raced past them both. Vancleve held pace with Berns to the end, with Halquist in third. Courtney Sampson moved through the pack after a bad start to climb into fifth on the final lap behind Cunningham. In the second moto, Bill Logan pushed Berns right from the beginning. Logan, “I put a run in on him and passed him once through the whoops but then he block passed me in the next corner. By that time I just couldn’t hold on any longer and settled for second.” Once Berns was clear of Logan, he held on for the win. Vancleve once again worked up to finish third, this time ahead of Sampson. Berns after taking his second win was all smiles, “I had good starts and the track was awesome today. We came up on Friday to do some testing and it really helped. That always crafty Bill Logan was all over me on lap three and I was glad to hold up to his pushing me.” Open A had nine riders, with a mix of new faces coming from four states. Shane Rhode timed the start perfectly to lead everyone out on his Yamaha. Right away Collin Reinhart pushed him with CYCLE USA, April 2017

In the fourth lap Reinhart made his way into the lead, and on the last lap Kienast made a hard move to get around Rhode for second. Kienast had a clear track off the start in moto two on took full advantage of it. Keeping him honest was Talan Hansen after finishing fourth in the first moto. By the half way point Hansen was still pacing Kienast out front. Rhode was in third after a charge from Tyler Fischer, then Collin Reinhart, he managed to hold it for (1-4). Hansen’s smooth ride put him into third overall ahead of Rhode (3-3). Kienast also won the 250A class, topping both motos ahead of Reinhart. Dossett. On the last lap as they got into lapped riders, Dossett made a pass for the lead, but shortly after tangled with another lapped rider and went down. Johnson re-took the lead to win with Kado Vandeberg, Kyle Oftedahl, Dossett and Corey Friendt rounding out the top five. Johnson after the win, “I got the holeshot and held it until he went around. Once he tangled with the lapper I was able to get the win. The track is mint. It was a fun race with plenty of action as always.” Dossett, “I had a really bad outside gate pick so I was glad to get a third place start. I quickly worked my way up and took the lead on that last lap, then tangled up with the lapper. You have to be aggressive out there. It sucked catching the lapper, but I couldn’t help it.” Johnson had his shot in the second moto as he led most of it. Late in the race, Dossett took over the lead, and Johnson then slid back in the last lap, dropping to seventh. Hero of the day was Vandeberg who rode to a great second place for the overall ahead of Dossett and Oftedahl (3-3).
It was another fantastic afternoon of racing in the comfort of the arena. By the time you read this, their series will have wrapped up and they’ll be holding a couple combined D23/D16 Dirt track events indoors to help those riders get ready for their summer racing. All Johnson at Otter Street Oshkosh, Wisconsin - February 4 By Gordon Lunde
T
he cold, wind and lack of sun all pointed to a dreary day at the Otter Street Ice Fisheree and ice races, except for that little ray of sunshine over the Christian Johnson pit area. The Mt. Calvary resident brought his own version of sunshine and happiness to a gloomy race track, coming out on top in three events. Johnson rode his #65L, 450 Yamaha to wins in the 450 Pro, Open Pro and the Canadian Screw Pro-Am race, making him the big winner of the day. All of Johnson’s victories were flag to flag runs, leading all the way. He thanks his Mom & Dad, Grandma & Grandpa, Elizabeth Miske, Todd Leafeber at Otis Moto, Chris Baker, Industrial Solutions and Johnson’s Auto Body for all their help. Christian’s brother Sonny came out in the 250 race and posted a win on his Honda to add to the family’s victory list. Gordy Halsey had a good day riding his 450 Honda to wins in the Senior and

450 classes. Not to be overshadowed by Johnson, Gordy’s wins also were out front the entire distance and running away from the class. The Otter Street Fisheree is a great day of activity that draws a huge crowd of fishermen vying for prizes. Add to that the racers, fans and spectators for the ice races and it becomes a great party atmosphere. Plenty of food and refreshments are available as well as kids games, door prizes, and chances at some great raffle items. Some new classes were added to the event this year with Rubber tire quads and
Side x Side ATVs. The entertainment value from these classes was apparent by the sounds of laughter, hoots and howls coming from the spectators. Wild slides, spins and rollovers abounded from these competitors. With no type of screws or studs in the tires, traction was something less than optimum. One “driver” rolled his side by side in both his heat race and final, but good protection allowed him to drive away both times after safety crews flipped his vehicle back on its tires. Zach Zwirchtz and Colton Zimmerman posted double victories in the more typical quad classes. A huge thank you goes out to the event sponsors, Beaver Cycle Club, Team Winnebagoland, Flat Out Friday and Tyler’s Cycle of DePere. Without these generous sponsors the races wouldn’t go on. District 17 Awards Banquet Another fantastic night for all the Champions

These awards are hard earned, and sacrifices are made all season - but the benefits are collected many times over. Every event is like a new chance to do what we all love - racing. Just as cool is time with our extended racing family. These memories are ours for a lifetime and you surely don’t need to be a class winner to take part in all that. We noticed plenty of riders here tonight just to be part of it all. They weren’t collecting an award - but wanted to be part of it. A sign of how cool this evening really is. We caught up with some of the direc-
nce all the gear is put away, bikes are stored and the racing season has come to an end, there’s one more special event many of our fellow District 17 members really look forward to - the Annual Awards Banquet. Again this January, the room was packed as hundreds of riders and family members streamed into the facility. For hours before the doors opened, directors of each discipline along with other D17 volunteers arranged tables full of beautifully personalized awards... plaques, jackets and other goodies. This is a special time for all these hard working individuals as well. They finally get a little down time to spend with their fellow riders, in a nice casual setting. Dinner, maybe a quick drink, some conversation, and then they are back to work, passing everything out. Congratulations flow from rider to rider. Proud parents, spouses, and friends keep an eye on their riders as they take to the stage for their moment of recognition. Proud family members

tors to ask about their impression of the evening and what stood out from this past season. Eric Miller, our D17 Trials director, “2016 was a great year for trials in D-17. We had ten competitions and a few nice organized play days. Fortunately, the number of Trials riders seem to be on the increase. All except a few trials award winners were able to attend the banquet to be recognized. Loreydi Ramirez, our Women's class champ also accepted the District 17 Scholarship award and that was really cool seeing. Another event of note was one of the NITRO play days, where a few members were able to present their president, Ralph Littlefield with a new Sherco as a token of their appreciation for his many years of giving to the sport.” The Enduro Director Ryan Moss has been around for a long time, racing, volunteering and doing all he can to help promote motorcycling. He took time and shared this, “The 2016 Enduro season saw eleven events on the schedule this year with a couple running the new Sprint Enduro CYCLE USA, April 2017

format and seven of these events requiring no lights and none of them requiring time keeping equipment. This year the series got to travel to many different places and all those had varied terrains to challenge even the best riders. The series saw some great events and battles. Thanks to all the clubs for putting the events on and to the riders for making it a great season. Our Grand Champion this year was Kiel Mueller taking his first Overall Championship. Kiel put in a very consistent year and was able to hold off up and comer Blake Ryan and some veterans of the series. Kiel hadn’t been riding many local events recently, instead focusing on the National Enduro series and it showed with his speed and consistency. This year we had a few good class battles throughout the season along with a couple standouts. In 200B we had the young speedster Tanner Whipple come and try out enduros this year. Some may not know but his father Ron Whipple from WFO Promotions was one of the top enduro riders in the Midwest, so it wasn’t a surprise that Tanner came in and took the 200B class win as well as the Overall B award. Tanner took four overall B wins and will be making the move to the A class for the 2017 season (and I’m sure AA for 2018). In the Vet B class new comer and last year’s C class winner Mateusz Denslaw and Casey Shatters battled it out for the win. Casey was able to take the win with a couple good rides towards the end of the season. In Vet A, new comer and last year Vet B winner Michael Manual got the win over Lee Orme in a season long battle. In the Masters (60+) class there was a great battle between Wally Mika and Rich Mertes. The two “old timers” were first and second at many races but Wally was able to pull off a few more wins and take the championship. I’m proud to say that Alex Moss (my son) had his first full season of enduros and took the championship even after DNF’ing one event due to mechanical issues and struggling with the technical terrain at a few other events. The District 17 Randy Hatcher Sportsman Award went Hill and Gully member Tom Elliot. Tom helps put on one of the longest running enduros in District 17; the Summer Bummer. Tom for years has 22

displayed true sportsmanship at events by helping others and bringing smiles to everyone with his joking nature. Many times in the pits when you hear laughter it’s coming from Tom and his group. Tom being part of the Hill and Gully riders traditional helps pick the rider for this award and helps give it out at the banquet. So it was a little tricky this year but thanks to the help of Dj Ryan and Vern Scholl we were able to pull it off and really surprise Tom. Congratulations to Tom, a very deserving rider for this award. 2017 will see eleven events on the schedule with three of them being the Sprint format. We will also have two national enduros this year. Six events on the schedule will be all off road or have permission to run on the roads so no lights will be required. And all events on the District 17 schedule

Reminder they also host a family enduro on Saturday which is all off-road and is a tamed down enduro. So bring the whole family out for two days of fun.” Gerhard Ward has been the District 17 Director or Motocross and Stadium MX for as long as anyone can remember. His involvement doesn’t end there, but that’s a long story all of its own. Gerhard had this to say about the night and past season, “This year’s banquet much like any other is the final thought, chapter, process to the racing season. Riders had rocketed off the gate, put in the hard hours on the road, did all the right things to maintain their machines and make it through the year. Tonight was the time to collect up some hardware and apparel. Personalized champion plaques along with the traditional Jackets, Hoodies, and T's were handed out. Jaxson Schiller may have been the high point getter of the season winning SX an MX Championships, 28 Stadium events and 32 MX meant this kid did some serious racing, and majority of the time he had his Ktm on the box. Ty Tyrrell took home the 25+ and Open A top step hon-
ors once again. Ty has consistently been the top dog in these classes for a while now. Byron Downen took the top honors in the 250A class, proving once again apples don't fall far from the tree! (dad won many championships over the years). Tyler Shugars with 11 events in the 4Wheel C class won over Alex Veith with the same number of races, but 70 some less points. There were also a good number of attendees there to grab the SX awards. Multiple award champions such as Blake Ryan in 14-24 and Open B also took podium spots in Enduro and Gran Prix types of racing. Ryan on his Countryside Ktm is always a strong contender in what ever "type" of racing he decided that particular Saturday or Sunday. Hunter Billingsley coming off the injured reserve list battled from behind to catch and over take the Gran Prix Champion Gavin Sienkiewicz for the Super Mini win in SX. Emily Smith wouldn't do an awards presentation interview, but did a fine job racing 28 events and taking the championship in the Women's class from last year’s champion Allie Roland who by the way won the Gran Prix and Hare Scrambles Championships. Jaxson Schiller raced a ton as mentioned, but the iron maiden in this district goes to Allie. 21 Hare Scramble events, 13 Gran Prix events, and 16 Stadium events were on her resume this season. Excellent weather always helps in the winter time so riders don't have to travel in adverse conditions to participate in the last event (banquet) of the last season. By the time you read this article, 2017 will be kicking off with some excellent events put on by clubs and promoters dedicated to providing quality fun experiences for all riders of any age. Don't forget - AMA District 17 State Motocross Championship is Sept 17th, 2017 at one of the first tracks in IL, Lincoln Trail Motosports! July 30th at one of the newer tracks in the state will host the AMA District 17 Mid-Season Championship at Ki Tracks. Plenty of excellent events will once again fill the District schedule. Don't miss out on racing in your back yard. Every weekend there’s multiple types of races to participate in.” Last, but far from least, Jay Hall our District 17 Hare Scrambles Director added his thoughts, “The 2016 District 17 Hare-Scramble season was a strong one seeing some old tracks come back and some new ones added with a total of twenty-nine events. This best of 15 series was well attended and has a strong rider and fan base. 2016 once again was the year of Cody Barnes winning almost every event he entered and clearly the top rider of the series. New-comer Matt McDonald finished second in AA, a very good strong performance. 2016 was well attended and this showed up in many classes. 65 Beginner had the highest attendance and highest
number of awards with ten payed out. It is very cool seeing this entry level class take off. The top rider was Riley Roberts who made twenty-two events and had a total score of 455. Very impressive, and we hope Riley and his family keep up the hard work in 2017. Lastly, I could talk about so many others but would run out room, but really need to mention the hard work of the Women’s division and how the ladies ride hard and come to the events with Allie Roland being at the top of the box at the end of the season. Darcie Graham kept her on her toes and pushed with all the riders till the end. Nice job ladies! The 2016 Banquet was a solid one. Everyone ate well and enjoyed a family atmosphere and where moms, dads and extended family got a chance to watch their loved ones receive recognition for their hard work. D23 Off-Road Awards Banquet Little Falls, Minnesota - January 28 By Mike Quinn
T
he Little Falls Ballroom was once again home to the ARMCA District 23, Fly Enduro and Hare Scrambles awards presentation ceremony. The event was again organized by Craig Hinkemeyer and his wife Wanda. They have been doing an incredible job with this banquet and ceremony for well over a decade. They deserve some recognition and a special thanks from our offroad racers and families. Over 350 were in attendance to celebrate the season’s accomplishments and just have a good time bench racing and talking about the “what ifs” that make up a racing season. It was nice to see a packed ballroom and so many friends that I haven’t seen in a year or two. It was a great opportunity for me to catch up with some very fast company. As always all those in attendance got to take home some goodies along with their awards. There was a ton of gear and apparel from our series sponsor Fly. I found it particularly rewarding to see an almost 100% turn out in our youth 30

classes. Minnesota was one of the first districts to implement youth classes in off-road competition. We started with a group of racers that saw the need to get entry level participation started. Steve joined a few hundred award winners, our off road series are going strong and have some good solid competition. In our AA class, perennial fast man Kyle Nelson took the top honors followed the youngster Nick Swenson, with old guy Matt Stavish filling out the podium. In our Golden Masters class which is +70, Jim Erickson took the top spot followed by Don Kruger. Candy Niewoehner was the fastest in the Women’s class, while daughter Rose took fifth in Macro. Our youth classes were strong with over 40 awards given out at that level alone. In all awards were handed out in 27 Hare Scramble classes. Due to some unforeseen circumstances and weather issues our Fly Enduro Series had fewer events than usual but we still had some clear cut winners. Our AA enduro champion is Nick Swenson, followed by an-
other young guy Tyler Pogrba, with Chad Toth in third. As with our Hare Scrambles Series we have youth classes on our enduro series. Jayme French took top honors in our highly competitive Premier class. Travis Illies topped the youngest riders for the 2016 season. First place in the girls class went to Ryanne Artman, followed by Kylie Long. Masters over 60 class saw Steve Reschke taking home the top honors followed by Terry Wagonner. We also had a large contingent of B and C class racers on hand to collect their awards and class winner jackets. These classes are highly competitive and large, we will certainly see some riders advancing to the next level for 2017. This was an extremely successful event, providing awards, bling and great company for all of our off road racers. I would like to thank all those in attendance for their dedication to our sport, and for allowing me a few minutes to speak. With luck I will be able to attend again next year.

Ice Racing Season Finale Weyauwega, Wisconsin - February 12 CWRIA/ SWIRA Ice Racing
T
he annual Fire on Ice event was another great success in Weyauwega. Featuring some oval snowmobile racing as well as a Fantasy Moto produced snowcross race on Saturday - the mix was perfect with all the CWIRA and SWIRA ice racing mixed in both days. After a busy Saturday, ice racing resumed Sunday with a great turnout and full day’s program on the nearly half mile oval track. Andrew Engen has been having a good season and in his first Open Am GP moto he hopped out to the front right off the start. With Marshfield, WI’s Joel Bayerl right behind, he led through the first couple tight corners and back out onto the oval. From there Cody Funk was third ahead of Madison’s Brent Hanke. Bayerl pushed Engen, but the two were so close that once out front Engen wouldn’t be denied, taking the win a few laps later. 34

In the second moto, Engen failed to get the perfect start he had earlier, and found himself stuck behind Bayerl. The two ran close to the end, with Bayerl holding on for the moto and overall wins. Funk, Crook and Hanke were rubbing all race over third. In the end, Funk got the best of the others to go 3-3 on the day. Holeshots seemed to be key in much of the GP racing today. In Open Studded Quad, Tyler Martin just beat Mitchel Williams and Nick Nett off the oval and into the first GP bends. From there the order was set with Martin slowly pulling away to the win. In the second moto Martin proved best again, leading all the way as riders shuffled behind him. Nett beat Williams through the first couple corners and then held onto second (3-2) for second overall. In the Open Pro class, even with a couple additional riders coming out, the front runners were familiar on the CWIRA series. Jesse Leu narrowly led Austin Ham-
burgur into the second corner as Alec Muth dropped into third with Russell Bradley side by side, on his outside. Sportland2/ Rib Mountain Tap House/ Wausau Midas rider Leu after the race, “I got the holeshot and led through the first laps. Then into the fourth lap Austin Hamburgur snuck past me through turns three and four. I got off my line just a little and into the fluff and once he was under me he had the pass. It was a fun race even with finishing second.” Hamburgur after taking the win, “I had to work for that one as we were going at it and I was trying the entire time. Getting into the last lap in the final turns he made a mistake and I made the pass for the win. I was everywhere pushing him before he made that mistake and it was just good I was heading for the inside when he slipped out. I was so hot crossing the finish line and going into turn one I got into the soft stuff and the bike wouldn’t turn. I went right off into the
hay bails. I’m fine and the bike isn’t damaged so we’re all good. It was fun getting the win for team 440 racing!” As these two battled out front, Bradley put his Yamaha ahead of Muth for third as Ian Malinowski wrapped up fifth against the always tough Roy Nafzger. In the second moto Leu pulled another holeshot, but this time Hamburgur quickly got around him for the lead. Once there, the race was on. Leu used every line possible to make a move, but Hamburgur never flinched and closed the door any time Leu got too close. Hamburgur pulled off another win, to sweep the class and extra cash pay-back made possible by the Fire on Ice organization. Muth started in third and held off Bradley to the checkers as well. Open Pro Studded Quad saw Graham Eichmiller top both motos for the big win. In the first moto Lodi’s Mike Hoksch finished a close second ahead of Tyler Martin. Hoksch was a no show for moto two, and Martin grabbed the runner-up spot ahead of Mike Mueller and Matt Corrigan. Portage, WI’s Duke Crook pushed his Yamaha hard into the first turns of the Open C class first moto to get ahead of Dennis Crook. Keeping it in the family, the two rode hard in that order to the finish. Jesse Jacobs made the short trip over from Appleton to finish in third with Colin Mulry fourth. The Crooks left it all on the track in the second race. Dennis started out front with Duke pushing him every chance he had. In the second lap, Duke made a pass, only to see Dennis come back and re-take the lead half a lap later. As they came towards the checkered flag, they weren’t done. Dennis held it on hard for the win as they were
side by side. Dennis on the outside did as Hamburgur had earlier.... with all the momentum, he hit the soft stuff and slid off into the hay bales. Nothing hurt but maybe a little pride... going home with the first place trophy was surely worth it! Jon Carpenter stepped up his first moto ride for third overall (5-3). Andrew Engen returned in the Open B first moto to lead every lap. The action was behind him and it got quite interesting at the end. In a class with mostly four strokes, Jacob Rusch keeps it old school, putting his 2 stroke Honda to the test. He started back in fourth before quickly working up to pass Sierra Heindl for second. Once there he caught Engen and really pressed him right to the finish line. Kenosha, WI’s Rick Rozinski finished fourth ahead of Megan Funk. Engen, “I finally got my first win of the season in the GP class earlier. As it warms up, the oval is getting really rough. I got out front but as the corners
get choppy it is harder to stay in a fast line. I was working for a clean line and then half way into this one Jacob came right up and inside me. I knew it was really time to push it regardless of what line I was in. This bigger track is a lot faster, but I seem to do well on it so it was good getting another win to start the day. I get the bike into fifth gear and just leave it there here. I really want to thank Travis and Jesse Leu for everything, both on setting up my bike and getting me out here. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. Rib Mountain Tap House really helps as well.” Moto two was a repeat of the first moto where Engen rode out front only to have Rusch work up and press him right to the end. Rozinski finished third this time, flipping positions with Heindl. Outlaw Pro Rubber ran heats to set up a final for those really fast non-studded quad riders. rear of the pack. In moto two, Alec Muth turned the trick of finishing second ahead of Bradley for second overall. Even as the ice got more rough, these guys put in some impressively fast laps. R
ound 2 of the WFO Promotions series was held at the same location as the opener two week earlier, Keithsburg, IL. Already known for being brutal with sand whoops everywhere, this would be the third race of the year held at the location, making the already challenging track that much tougher. The weather cooperated once again and brought out 236 total entries for the day. In the first race of the day, Easton Morgan aboard his KTM took the 85cc class win along with the morning mini race overall. Elijah Berryman and Lake Plowman, both aboard Kawasakis finished second and third. In the 65cc class, Lane Davis took the Steelhorse Innovations
Holeshot Award, but was just edged out by Riley Roberts at the end of the 45 minute race. Regan Doerr rounded out the podium in third. Allie Roland took the Women’s class victory over round one winner Darcie Graham and Ottawa, IL’s Michelle Dalton aboard her Braaap Shop Beta. KTM’s Brady Dillbeck came out on top of the always competitive 50cc 78 class. Jake Hasten

and Jack Allgeyer finished just a bit back. Jake Hasten bounced back to take the win in the seventeen rider 65cc Beginner class over Cameron Walker and Finn Lohf. Local boy Derik Tippie took the 200C class win, along with the morning’s big bike overall. Just under three minutes back was Kyle Roberts. Another Keithsburg native, Parker Townsend, finished third. In the
Open C class, Geneseo, IL’s Keegan Minnaert made it two wins in a row, while Jordan Emmons and Michael Snyder rounded out the podium. In the Senior +40C class, Brian Cox out of Muscatine, IA took the holeshot and went on to take the win. In the AA class, Cody Bollinger bounced back from his third place finish at round one to take the overall win by almost two minutes. Bollinger, “I got a good start and came around the first lap in second with [Zack] Sulzberger in the lead. We swapped positions a few times before the one hour mark hit. Sulzberger pitted and I took advantage by pushing to get a decent gap between us. Then I rode into the checkers for first overall. horse Innovations, G2 Ergonomics, Layton’s Suspension, and my parents and family for their support." Three-time WFO champion Zack Sulzberger held on to finish second with Colt Converse in third. In the Super Senior +50A class, Don Raschke was first around the start corner to take the holeshot award, but it was Brett Baer who took home the first place trophy. Dale Smith and Rick Mahrt rounded out the podium. The seventeen rider 98-250B class saw Zac Downey at the top of the results page with James Adkisson and Thor Rick following. The Quad A class had another huge showing with eighteen riders. Matt Lindle from Muscatine, IA took top honors. 2016 champ Shea Dickson finished runer-up. Early Spring continues for District 17 at LTM

O
n March 5th Lincoln Trail Motosports hosted another D17 points race and the first of twelve rounds of the Fly Showdown Series. The pits were full of racers anxious to show off new gear, fresh bikes, and with 517 entries for the day, we were guaranteed big gates for every class. The Mark Barnett designed Bomber track was ready with loamy rollers, sandy whoops, deep-dug straights and perfect ruts in the corners. Some of the best races of the day were in the 65 classes. Don’t let the age of these kids or the size of their bikes fool you, because this is a deep field with national speed. The front pack routinely hits the uphill triple, clears the big tabletop, and flies through the double-double at the top of the hill. The combined gate for the 65 Jrs and Srs held almost thirty riders and these kids charged into the first turn like pro racers, elbows high and shifting gears. The Sr riders took the first drop and Borelli Cycle’s Hunter Savage on his KTM went bar to bar with Team Green Kawasaki’s Krystian Janik in the first turn. Janik pulled ahead out of the second corner as Savage kept him in his sights before eventually settling for second. The real battle was just behind
them, as Dillon Phelps held off Ayden Oppenlander for two laps before Oppenlander saw his chance and grabbed third. Phelps came across the finish in fourth. Janik was out front early in the second moto as well, but his bike gave up after just one lap. Savage took over and led Oppenlander and Phelps on an orderly tour for the rest of the race. Moto one for 65Jr delivered a battle from gate drop to the checkered flag. Husky rider Peter Parenti got the jump on the field at the drop, grabbing the holeshot from KTM rider Nicholas Stefancik. Tristan Dalton on his KTM was on the back wheel of Stefancik and the race was on. These three juggled positions throughout the race, with Dalton passing both Parenti and Stefancik early. Parenti and Stefancik got the pass back on Dalton. Once back out front, Parenti had a lot of pressure from Stefancik. In the final lap Stefancik found that extra gear and got around Parenti to take the win. Dalton picked up third. The second moto was a very orderly affair with Stefancik, Parenti and Dalton starting and ending the race 1-2-3. The 65 Open class gives all these riders a chance to take the gate drop together. With Janik out because of bike problems, it was Sr racer Savage who took the lead. Jr racers Stefancik, Parenti
and Dalton stayed close. The checkered flag went to Savage, with Stefancik, Parenti and Dalton rolling in behind. Having a mid-pack finish in both motos of 65Sr, KTM rider Owen Hill lined up for the second moto of the 65 Open determined to leave it all on the track for his last race of the day. He came out gunning and got the early lead over Savage and Stefancik. Savage managed to get around Hill after the uphill triple. Not giving up, Hill held off both Stefancik and Parenti for the rest of the race, taking the checkered just behind Savage. Stefancik’s 23 finishes were good enough for second overall, but Hill took the last step on the podium with his 5-2 motos. Talking with Savage after the races, this fifth grader with straight A’s in school was excited to be back on the track. His 2016 season ended with a broken leg just after qualifying for Loretta’s, so starting the D17 season taking wins in both classes and getting three holeshots felt great. Sharing the gate for one of the last races of the day were thirteen kids in Schoolboy 2, eighteen men in +50 and half a dozen more in Open 2-Stroke. Schoolboy took the first drop. The KTM of John Greer hit the first turn in front, but it didn’t last. Buried in the back at the start was Adam Sansone who maneuvered through almost the entire field in one lap. Tristen Binz and Derick Bell locked onto the coattails of Sansone and these three stayed in front for the rest of the race. They went 1-2-3 in both motos and the overall. The second drop of this race released the +50 riders and the results at the first turn were brutal for Orville Kline and Mark Huber as they went down hard. Huber got up pretty quickly and worked his way back to twelfth place for the moto. Kline took a couple minutes before remounting, but was good to go for CYCLE USA, April 2017

moto two, coming in sixth. As the first moto ended in +50 Rodney Carrier was out front with Gary Adams on his Yamaha close and Scott Campbell in third. In moto two Adams got tangled with a downed rider, and after having trouble restarting his bike, was left to work his way through the field, getting back to third by the finish. Campbell was hung tough for fourth behind Suzuki rider Scot Delmastro and Adams left him in 4th for the moto. Adams. Campbell’s 3-4 finishes landed him on the final step of the podium. I
t snowed the morning of February 25, 2017 in Mendota, Illinois. That didn’t stop 76 trials riders from showing up for the first indoor trials in Illinois. This District 17 event was held at Megatraxs, an old manufacturing warehouse converted for riding dirt bikes. The main area has dirt berms and a really nice track used by motocross bikes. The more congested area of the warehouse had not been used for riding until this event. Congested obstacles are exactly what Trials riders like. Almost everyone was shocked with the great setup. Trialsmaster Travis Ward was able to exceed everyone’s expectations. Travis hauled in tons of logs, pipes, and concrete to create eight challenging sections. Section one had a teeter totter made from a metal plank and a 55 gallon drum that

had to be ridden over. Another section had riders going up into the bed of a dump truck and then over a large flatbed trailer. Several sections had long I-beams that were turned on their side and used as ramps that tested the riders’ balance. At the far end of the warehouse there was a pit in the concrete floor. There were 2 sections that used this pit where riders entered on a ramp. The upper class riders had to jump their bikes up the wall to get out with little room to get lined up. Not everyone made it up the first try. Some of the sections were on their motocross track, but they had to go up the steep sides of the hills and over some added obstacles, including logs, concrete slabs and pipes. A favorite section to watch had the champ class hopping over some large wooden wire spools. It didn’t look easy, even for the top riders. It was just another opportunity to play with gravity.
Riding the trials bikes in the middle of winter in an old warehouse was a great idea. Look for this indoor trials to be an annual event for District 17 and with the success of the first effort, it will get even better in the future! We’ll be back for sure. istrict 23 ATV Rep Mark Olson played a major role in putting together a very successful year-end awards banquet for the 2016 season. Hosted by emcee legend Dan Bailey, the event was held at the Best Western Plus Bloomington Hotel located near the Mall of America where racers and their friends and families were treated to a delightful buffet including cake for dessert, the awards presentation and best of all, some serious door prizes donated by several kind people and businesses. The good folks at 75 Designs Graphics (Patrick Edmonds) made a banner saluting the event sponsors that will be proudly displayed at all of the D-23

Flat Out Mama event Milwaukee, Wisconsin - February 17 By Gordon Lunde
W
hat to do on a winter night in mid February? Go to a motorcycle race, what else? But these races would be held indoors on a Dr. Pepper soda syrup sprayed track in downtown Milwaukee, WI. The 2017 version of Flat Out Friday indoor motorcycle racing and The Mama Tried custom cycle show once again proved to be the hot ticket for enthusiasts from around the country. The events started Friday afternoon with practice for the indoor races. The BMO Harris Bradley Center is the home of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team and a convention or concert venue most days. This night it was turned into an indoor, oval race track. eleven classes. Youth, amateur, vintage, pro and “hooligan” classes were among these. These racers hailed from as far away as Tokyo, Japan, along with others from across our country. The ages of the racers spread just as wide with youth racers in their early teens to a local rider, Chuck Dickenson who is still actively racing at the age of 75! Promoter Jeremy Prach predicted 10,000 fans for this year’s event and although at press time there was no official count, the crowd was huge! This event gets bigger each year and the attention it receives around the world is growing. Once the action started with heat races and semi finals to determine the final grids, the crowd was on their feet cheering and laughing. Mr. Prach realizes that yes, these are races, but emphasizes the fact that it is also a show and encourages wheelies and other actions not normally welcomed on the race track. The final events proved to be spectacular for racers and fans alike. The Charlotte Kainz Memorial Pro race had some
serious money donated for the top finishers. Fans could get one of the 35 laps named in their honor for $100, which was matched by Harley-Davidson. American Flat Track Pro racers Jammin Jared Mees and Cory Texter had a great battle for the lead. Texter blasted out front at the start with Mees getting lost in the shuffle off the line. In just a matter of a lap though, Mees was right on Texter’s rear wheel and trying everything he knew to get past him. When he did get past the Jammer stayed there for the rest of the race. Officials declared that Texter had jumped the start of the race and he was penalized with a one lap deduction placing him fifth rather than second place at the finish. The Boonie races were popular with racers aboard 50 and 60cc pull start mini bikes. Speeds were slow but with the poor handling of these machines the spills were frequent. J.J. Flairity won the race aboard a Kustom World mini.
Probably more anticipated than the Pro race, was the Hooligan class. It draws more entries than any other class. Riders are on 750cc or larger twins which are a true handful to ride on this small track. Several riders were battling for the lead throughout the race with positions changing each lap. At the end it was local favorite Benny Carlson aboard the Suburban Harley XR1200 taking the win over Andy Dibrino and Terry Vestal. The following day was a motorcyclist’s
race bikes, street bikes and displays of custom paint jobs. One wall was covered with photos of bikes and the biker lifestyle. A tattoo artist held another corner of the floor and he had a long line of people all day waiting to get inked. In all, the entire weekend was a cycle riders fantasy land. Great racing, a super cool show, camaraderie and great weather all combined to make for a spectacular Amateur class winner Dominic Cameron event. Keep your calendars dream for a February Saturday. I
t was another “Casey Miracle.” An ice storm threatened the 5pm gate drop for the Lincoln Trail Motosports Awards Banquet, but true to form the ice cleared out, and the track that never cancelled any of its twenty plus race events in 2016 held its banquet at Richards Farm Restaurant in Casey, IL. It was one of the most swag-filled events in LTM’s fortyfour year history. Racers, their friends and families enjoyed an evening of fun, food and friendship. Track owners Tim and Drew Jackson said of the season “we don’t have much quit in us at LTM. We don’t cancel because of a ‘chance’ of rain. It’s made for some sleepless nights

but we have a reputation to uphold.” The banquet celebrated the champions and podium-placers of the 13-round Fly Showdown Series. Each award came with the Champion hoodie and an individualized swag bag - stuffed with jackets, gloves, goggles, gift certificates and more. The banquet also had some of the most unique trophies. The evening started with Tim Jackson thanking all the racers and families that made 2016 a great season. And a huge round of applause went to the hardworking crews of flaggers, scorekeepers, tower personnel and track workers who kept everything running smooth for a season that stretched from February to November. Track announcer Dave Henry then took over as MC for night. He invited up award winners and gave everyone a chance to thank their sponsors. Henry was also certain to mention the difference in some of the racers appearance at this event. There were guys in suits and ties, á la Ken Roczen,
proving that even the toughest mx racers clean up pretty good! In addition to the individual awards, special recognition was given to LTM’s overall champions: Bryar Horton in the Youth group, Lucas Garrels for the Amateurs and Roy Bittner for the Vets. These guys each earned the most points racing in their respective classes for the entire season, quite an accomplishment. Then an elite group was honored for having raced all thirteen events of the Fly Showdown Series, and these guys in the “Hundred Percent Club”’ received not only trophies but (appropriately) goggles from 100%. Two very special kids were recognized for special achievements. Drake East accepted the inaugural DeCal Works Most Improved Racer from Track Marshal Chris Blair. Blair said “I used to spend more time picking this kid up and restarting his bike than any kid I’ve ever seen. But Drake never gave up. Now we are here at the banquet and he’s receiving series awards for second place in both the 65Jr and 65 Open. He went from literally not being able to finish a full lap in practice to placing in cross country and mx races.” LTM, Continued on page 54

The Most Improved Rider award went to Amelia Washburn. She always has a smile but don’t let that fool you. She’s tenacious, going from training wheels to racing in just a few months. Pro racer Veronica Whitsell presented Amelia a personalized wave-board and jersey. “She is a total inspiration. Amelia has helped remind me of what riding is all about.
