D
istrict 23 Flat Track racers, friends and family were treated to a well-orchestrated year end award banquet in mid-February. D23 Rep Adam Schmidt, Mark Olson and a host of volunteers combined their efforts to bring the nice event for the second year in a row to the Best Western Plus Bloomington Hotel. The event was emceed by the talented and always entertaining race track announcer/ competitor Dan Bailey. Over $7000 in awards, jackets, door prizes, coupons and other miscellaneous goodies were given away, making sure everyone went home with some kind of door prize. 4

Banquet constituents were also treated to a buffet and for desert an array of delicious cupcakes donated by Tracey Schroeder from Traceyscupcakes. New to the 2017 season was a TT track built inside the New Ulm oval on the Flying Dutchmen Club grounds that held high praise from the quad competitors and looked like a terrible amount of fun to compete on. The track could possibly be the home of an ATV National in the near future. The list of event sponsors is a long one and for that all D-23 racers, friends and family are appreciative of. The district event calendar is close to full with events in six disciplines, plus some road and trail rides. We certainly have enough to keep all of our members busy. I would like all of you to take a moment and remember two of our founding members, not only did they work to establish the district but they helped it grow, and prosper from its inception until they passed away. Unfortunately they didn’t get to celebrate our 50th year, but they will not be forgotten. Dale Greenwald and Barney Larson will be missed by all of us that were lucky enough to know, work with and ride with them. That’s all I have for this month. As always I hope to see on the tracks, trails, and roads of Minnesnowta. Mike

Spring is finally starting to show up, the temperatures are rising and the five foot snow banks in my front yard are finally starting to shrink. The older I get the longer the winters seem to be. It will be nice to get out on two wheels both on the road and in the dirt. Many of you will have received your district cards by the time you read this. The card that came in the envelope with your district card is redeemable for some items that will be available very soon. We will have packages at all of the events so you can claim your 50th Anniversary items. We are still waiting on some of these goodies to be manufactured and shipped once they are all here we will begin getting to the promoters of events. Do not throw the card away as it is your ticket to receiving those special items. We hope to have everything in by the end of April. We’re also working on the year-end awards already as we want them to be special for this season. We have an anniversary logo and that new will be available on our apparel. You will also be receiving a hard plastic card much like your AMA card, another change for 2018. Fly is back with us for 2018 and we have $10,000 in Fly bucks to give away courtesy of Fly/ Western Powersports. This is huge in this day of sponsorships drying up. We need to support the companies and the dealers that support us and the sport. It is important that we don’t loose our dealerships. We also have a new website up and going, with online sign up for the district and you can also print off the application if you do not want to use the online route. 2018 Steel Shoe 3 Hour Campbellsport, Wisconsin - January 21 By Dave Hollub
I
wondered what I was doing as the fog kept getting thicker the closer I got to Kettle Moraine Lake, this was mid January and it was foggy out? After weeks of below zero temperatures the night before the race the temperature was rising and finally settled in at 30 degrees. Luckily the previous sub zero days had assured that the ice was thick (at least 18 inches) and safe on race day. Practice went out as scheduled at 10AM but soon after it was finished the race organizers made the call to delay the start by thirty minutes in hopes the fog would lift. This was the perfect decision as about ten minutes before the new start time ice shanties became visible from shore as the fog thinned. At 12:30 the Ironmen rolled off the start and they were determined to put down as much distance as they could before everyone else got their green flag. Eventually all the divisions would be on the track at the same time. Lance Wollin was out front on the Sunset Bar & Grill entry with Jason Larson on the Goon Squad Larson bike next, followed by Jessie Janisch (Roof Systems Yamaha) and Jay Waalen (Hyde Racing) side by side right behind. By the end of lap one JR Schnabel (West Bend HD) had worked up from a fifth place start to second behind Wollin with Janisch and Lar-
son close behind. Closing in on the hour one mark Schnabel was out front and Wollin had slipped back to third behind Janisch. The top three stayed in place the rest of the race and held on not only for the top spots in their class but also in the overall. Overall winner JR Schnabel, “The start was good and Jessie, Lance, and myself were able to separate from the pack right away. For the first couple laps we just kind of followed each other around learning the track. Once we got into lappers I was able to pick up some more speed and with a couple fast laps I was able to get past Lance and into the lead. It was a good race and Jessie was starting to catch me midrace. I could see him as I was leaving a corner so I put my head down and pushed harder. After three laps, which sounds quick but is really almost thirty minutes, I was able to get some separation and a bigger cushion. When you do that it makes it hard for the other guy because it kind of breaks him a bit as he thinks ‘awe darn he got away’. From there I just maintained my pace and got the win. A huge part of this race is keeping your bike to-
gether and mine didn’t break so that was awesome, I had a great set of tires so it was an all around fun and safe race. I was riding a 350 and the tighter track today worked to my advantage, the 450s didn’t have the long straights to really wind out. This was a great day to have this many guys out supporting a charity race. Thanks to my sponsors West Bend Harley, Moose Racing, Maxima Racing Oils, and Motion Pro.”
JR Schnabel took home the overall trophy for 2018 as well as the Heavyweight win
Kaley Johnson aboard the Johnson/Gerencer (67) grabs the Heavyweight Bikes holeshot
The largest class (36 bikes) Heavyweight bike got the green flag next and the Johnson/Gerencer (Kaley Johnson/ Charlie Gerencer) bike edged out the Johnson-Fischer entry (Kyle Johnson/ Davis Fischer) for the holeshot. 328 Powersports ‘A’ (Jacob Weidemeyer/ Tylor Skodras) was third on the outside while Starsky & Hutch (Ian Malinowski/ Justin Fluger) battled with Johnson Auto Body (Christian Johnson/ Trey Johnson) for fourth on the inside. Johnson-Fischer slipped into the class lead on lap one then held on for the next two laps until 328 Powersports got by. By the end of hour one 328 Powersports was in the lead with Johnson-Fischer, Johnson Auto Body, and then Beaver Cycle Club (Eric Mischler/ Dan Mischler) rounding up the top four spots. Johnson Auto Body and Johnson-Fischer got past 328 Powersports on lap nine just in time to claim the top two spots one lap

later at the two hour split. Three laps later Johnson Auto body dropped out leaving Johnson-Fischer and 328 Powersports to fight for the lead. By the time the checkers came 328 Powersports was out front, Beaver Cycle, and Johnson/ Gerencer claimed the top three places.
Tylor Skodras of the 328 Powersports ‘A’ team said after, “It was a long race, Jacob started and got us a fourth place start and made his way into the lead in a couple laps. He made some ground on the Ironman guys. The top three were pretty far out but he closed in on them
and by the fifth lap was into fourth overall. Jacob was doing real good riding his pace and when we did the switch I got on and gave it my all. We were able to hold onto the class lead for the win and finish with a fourth overall. Not quite as good as getting the overall win like last time but still pretty good being in the top four. The track was tighter and it got a lot rougher which was perfect for a moto guy like me, more like riding on dirt. The bike ran great and it was fun racing to the end. I want to thank 328 Powersports on E-bay, he is our sponsor and helps us out with everything.” Team Father/Son (Ethan and Brad Rosine) led the Middleweight bikes into the holeshot corner with Maximum Sunshine (Max Meyer/ Sonny Johnson) close behind. By the end of lap one Maximum Sunshine was holding onto the lead with Retriever Racing (Pat Ryder/ Terry Hahn) on the move in second ahead of Father/Son and the Ride Bell Helmets (Scott Fittshur/ Ben Carlson) bike. At the one hour mark Retriever was out front, Team Uneven (Ken Even/ Hunter Even) were second, with Lange Brothers 90 (Brady Lange/ Cody Thompson) and Jesgande Racing (Jacob Jesko/ Dalton Per-

gande) right on their rear wheels. At the two hour mark Lange Brothers was out front then came Ride Bell Helmets, and finally RB Enterprises (Jordan Pintor/ Jordan Nielsen/ Alex Pintor) in third. Ride Bell Helmets took over the lead before the checkers. Retriever Racing pushed hard and claimed second while Team JJ (Jim Beckman/ Jeff Wick) finished on the third podium step. Ride Bell Helmets rider Ben Carlson, “The weather held out, it was supposed to rain and never did, then the fog lifted and the day was perfect. It also wasn’t all that cold. Scott Fittshur and I have run
this together a couple times and this time we had a good bike, stayed upright and just rode consistent. That all adds up to a win especially in these three hour endurances. The track was a great setup and held up well, it did get rutted but with 100 bikes going around that’s going to happen. We want to thank Bell Helmets, KLM Motorcycle and Snowmobile Apparel, and Undercover Eyewear.” The Lightweight Bikes had to wait for everyone else to hit the track ahead of them but Marc Ottenad aboard the Lemon Pie Production (with John Stewart) bike grabbed the holeshot ahead of JJ

Racing (Jason Goetz/ Joseph Goth), Rob’s/Best Tile Works (Tyler Smulders/ Seth Doeberlein), and US Chrome Racing (Ryan Callies/ Bruce Wadman/ Braxton Callies). By the end of lap one the race running order was set with Rob’s leading the way ahead of Lemon Pie and JJ Racing. Lemon Pie kept Rob’s in sight as they both twisted the throttles on those 125cc bikes as far as they could. Caballero Racing (Frank Caballero/ Jesse Caballero) slipped past JJ Racing just before the two hour mark and held on to third all the way to the finish. Even though they got the last start the top two lightweights battled their way through the bigger bikes Jim Beckman (65) battles with the Beaver Cycle Club #2 bike to finish up in the top ten overalls. from course setting to paperwork, and Steel Shoe Board member Chris Roger Lange. Despite having three kids DaRonco, “The 23rd annual 3 Hour Enracing on separate teams today he was durance Race had the second highest out all day yesterday and again since team count ever. With ninety two teams, 6AM today setting up and plowing the we were “short” twelve teams from our course plus anything else we needed to all time high and the event went really make sure the event went off without a well. We were a little shorthanded but flaw. Last but not least my entire family the help we had worked their butts off to who founded this race and for 25 years make the event happen. I hate to name now have worked relentlessly making any because I know some will be missed sure the Steel Shoe Fund and related but just a couple Jeff Fredette for course events keep going. We have most of the setting, Chris Baker who was out here all area clubs represented who help make the day yesterday helping with everything
event possible: Aztalan, Beaver Cycle Club, Kettle Moraine Sports Riders, Dairyland Racing (SST’s). A huge thank you to our race sponsors; Pro Gold Screws, Moose Racing, Suburban Motors HD, Fuel Café, and Light Shoe. Without them this event wouldn’t be possible.” Every year the local and national support from racers makes the Steel Shoe 3 Hour race the premier ice race of the season. Over the 25 years the Steel Shoe Fund has raised and dispersed over $70,000 to assist flat track riders with medical expenses and this event is the primary source of funds. From the looks on the racers faces this year it appears the race has a bright future. Start getting ready because the 2019 race is less than a year away. A
s it often has been in the past, Round 1 of the AMA District 17 Hare Scramble Championship was held by WFO Promotions at Sandy Oaks Campground and Riding Park in Keithsburg, IL. Keithsburg has always been known to be sandy, rough and brutal. This season opener proved to be the same. The WFO crew did a great job creating a five mile course that used up almost every little bit of the sandy property. The first race of the day was included the 65cc, 85cc, Supermini and Women class riders. Cole Morgan out of the 85cc class brought home the overall win for the 45 minute race. Iowa’s Tucker Miller finished second in class and Geneseo, IL’s Kyle Walker rounded out the podium. Davin Shike, Jake Hasten and Jaden Hamilton went 1-2-3 in 65cc 7-11. Supermini was topped by Billy Weirup and the ten rider Women’s class was won by Minnesota’s Miranda Tweeton. BriAnn Wells finished second followed by 12

Missy Norton. On their own, separate track, two 50cc classes and the 65cc Beginner class took
place. Wyatt Johnson won the 50cc 4-6 class, while Cooper Duff won 50cc 7-8. Elmwood, IL’s Austin Burns brought home the win in 65cc Beginner ahead of Scott Creagan and Jackson Piecha. On the full course in the Open C class, Keithsburg native Derik Tippie brought home the win followed by Bryce Bent and Owen Rowe. The 98-200C class was topped by young-gun Elijah Berryman. Tyler Dameron and Cody Stewart finished 2-3. Brian Cox took the +30C win with Shyloh Huffman and Ron Erickson rounding out the podium. After the hour and thirty minute event came to a close, some of the fastest guys in the midwest lined up on the starting line, ready to do battle. In the AA class, Austin Wells ripped the holeshot on his Countryside Husqvarna TX300 with KTM mounted Colten Zuidema half a bike length back. Positions jostled quite a bit during the opening laps and by the thirty minute mark of the hour and forty-five minute race, Minnesota’s upand-comer Logan Kittock had +30A’s Jaramie Brown going to third place pushed into the lead and opened
quite the gap on the rest of the field. Wells, Zuidema and Indiana-native Matt Sims diced for position for most of the beginning part of the race. Eventually Sims broke into second and away from the others. Kittock went on to easily take the win by two minutes ahead of Sims. Reigning WFO champion Colt Converse sliced his way through the pack after a mediocre start to take the last spot on the podium. Wells finished fourth and Zuidema fifth. 2017’s AMA District 17 Hare Scrambles Champion Matt McDonald was on a charge all day but an unfortunate flat tire ended his race a lap early. In the twenty-one rider Open A class,
Overall winner, Minnesota’s Logan Kittock
Brad Glasnovich was first one around the first couple corners, however it was Jon Adkisson who took the win. Jarred Hall aboard his Hall’s GasGas finished second with Brady Kittock in third. The alwayscompetitive +30A class was topped by Canton, IL’s Cody Toal, followed by Luke Kaszynski and Jaramie Brown. Erik Olson brought home the win in the +40A class over Paul Mccullaugh and George Ewalt. Kyle Burnham grabbed the Quad A win over Austin Koutsky and Mickey Martin. District 23 Off-Road Banquet Annual event sees another great turn-out as expectations for a great 2018 build Little Falls, Minnesota - January 27 By Paul Otto
T
here’s snow on the ground, it’s cold. We haven’t ridden on dirt for months or seen any of our dirt bike family, so it’s always great to break up the winter with the yearly Off-Road banquet to reminisce about how great everyone was or thought they were. Festivities started off with a social hour letting everyone get reacquainted while checking out the vast array of new motorcycles from the always supporting Larsons Cycle. Some tasty food for those that remembered to order a ticket was catered by the Little Falls Ballroom.

body wants to miss these articles. We are calling this year our 50th Anniversary. With that the district will have two special Dale Greenwald Memorial events for off-road. Those events were given to the Norsemen which was fitting since Dale was a Norsemen member. We will have special awards for both Mora and Trollhaugen in his honor. The Norsemen will also be honoring the late Barney Larson at the Cambridge Sprint Enduro. Look for more specific on a later date. We need to thank to all the clubs and volunteers for their countless hours making 2017 a successful season. We all look forward to seeing what they have in store for us in 2018. Should be epic. See you at the races.

After stuffing ourselves the festivities kicked off with a nice tribute video of some very influential people in Dale Greenwald whom founded District 23, Barney Larson whom helped start the Norseman MC & Larsons Cycle and Mike Pohl a rider, racer and friend to all. With the passing of these great guys we have a hole that needs to be filled with at least three more volunteers to step in and help extend Off-Road’s legacy. No application needed and starts immediately. A little something new this year for the award winners was a picture projected on the screen introducing their accomplishment for the year. A big hit for the kids as they stood atop of the stage proud as a peacock getting their pictures taken. The adults on the other hand thought it was nice but not all were jumping up on the stage to get a photo opt. With the purchase of a meal ticket you were also entered for prizes drawn at random. In between trophy presentations they gave the off-road reps a break and put the crowd on high alert waiting to see if their name was called. The RVER does
an excellent job putting together the banquet every year and gathers all the prizes for our enjoyment. Make sure to thank them and all the sponsors for helping make this an enjoyable time. The race schedule is out, and we have a full calendar this year with some new races. Also, the application is on line if you didn’t receive one in the mail or lost it. Another thing to look out for is if you still want to receive Cycle USA you must check the box on the application that you want it otherwise you will be opted out and noCYCLE USA, April 2018

Flat Out Friday... FUN
#45 JJ Flairty, Vintage class winner
BMO Harris Center Milwaukee, Wisconsin - February 23 By Gordon Lunde
F
riday, February 23rd, was a cold winter evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Not a time for motorcycles you say? Ha! Over 200 riders turned out for this year’s version of Flat Out Friday. This is the hell bent, horsepower driven idea of one Jeremy Prach, who decided when the MaMa Tried motorcycle invitational show started, that there needed to be some action along with the beauty. In this, the third version of the event, cycle racers from across the Midwest ventured forth to show their talents and or insaneness on this short, concrete, Dr. Pepper soda syrup covered layout. A crowd of nearly 10,000 showed up to cheer the racers 16

on. Racers? It took seven heat races to get a final filled for the “Boonie” class. These are pull start mini bikes, with engines from 5 hp Briggs and Strattons to
big industrial twins. There was even an Evinrude boat motor powered machine! They ran five heats for the Hooligan class. Another of the fan’s and rider’s fun events is the “Inappropriate” class. If you can name it, it probably has been on this track over the past three years. Honda Pacific Coast done up as a donut laden police special, alongside a pull start chopper with an insanely long extended front end rounded out this crazy field of bikes. But then there was one that wasn’t a bike. One industrious rider mounted wheels on the front of an old snowmobile and entered it. Anything goes, as long as it meets safety requirements. Then there is the “Hooligan” class which consists of Harley Davidsons and only Harley Davidsons. Sportsters of all models are the theme from 883 to XR1200, full out race bikes to modified street machines. It’s an ear splitting, raucous, fun time.
John Dunbar in the Inappropriate class - keep in mind, this is about FUN!
The big race of the night is the thirty-five lap Charlotte Kainz Memorial event. With the pro riders turning insanely fast seventeen second lap times around this tiny track, it is over fast. There’s $100 per lap prize money available to the leader, plus more from event sponsors and the war was on for the coveted title and a wallet full of cash. On the top step this year was Bronson Bauman after a crazy battle with Jake Mataya. Both riders crashed while leading and reentered the race. They battled, banging off each other nearly
every corner until Mataya went down again on the penultimate lap and ended his chance for victory. Mataya returned to the race again but could only save it to seventh place. Cory Texter took over the second place spot. The fan favorite race? The Kids race, not to be confused with the Youth class. In this “race” young riders not old Marko Lazarevic, enough for fuel powInappropriate class winner ered machines hit the track on bicycles, electric toy motorcycles and strider bikes. Champions Crowned Annual District 17 Awards Banquet another winning night 2017 District 17 Annual Banquet Ottawa, Illinois - January 20
I
t has always been a lofty goal - becoming a District Champion. While some say it’s a pure matter of participation, anyone chasing this dream knows the truth. It is all about dedication, effort and yes, being good enough to actually win. You race when conditions may be less than perfect. You and probably your friends and family go racing when there are other things pulling at your limited weekend free time. You train and you ride hard. If you do well, all season you may have a shot at a championship. The accomplishment is just as big and every bit as cool now as it has always been. Not only winning, but being in the top portion of your year-end class results is impressive. Congratulations to everyone who takes on the challenge! Just for trying, you are part of a special group. Along the path of competing this much, you’ll make more and very good friends. You will likely become a better person, and surely your life will be more complete. The annual banquet in large part is to celebrate all of that. Champions are
crowned, top finishers get their moment... but every bit as much, all your racing friends are here with you enjoying yet another great event. The 2017 District 17 Banquet was another great success. Food, awards, and best of all quality time with like minded people. Where else can you go, walk up to anyone in a room of nearly 500, get a smile, handshake and start a good conversation about motorcycles? It was a good season, and this was the celebration of all of it. Jay Hall, District 17 Hare Scrambles Director’s thoughts on the season. “2017 Hare-Scrambles found some tight racing, none more than 50SR. First place Jake Hasten and Austin Burns had only four points separating them with both them riding over twenty-three races, that’s some good racing. In the 65 Beginner class it was even tighter with first place Davin Shike and Jake Hasten the tied, Davin getting the nod with more wins. Another great season of racing and we know 2018 will bring even more battles. 2017 had one of our old wildly riders winning in the 50B/C class as Reagon

Rhodes took the top honor in getting the most total points through the season, with 510 points earned. Rhodes will be our newest 50A rider, so welcome to the club. 2017 found last year’s 200B winner and new Open A rider Tanner Whipple dominate the class, giving AA fits from time to time while winning the A class and doing it in such a manner he is our newest Dist.17 AA rider, nice job Tanner. The one that was really on the gas in 2017 was AA rider Matt McDonald, winning a hard fought class and making many improvements to his game. Something else about Matt, he’s come through the ranks starting with the mini’s all the way up through AA, and has won every level the District offers - great job Matt! We have so many storys we could keep going but many where told at the Banquet and some even had got faster than what I saw on the track but that’s bench racing... like fishing it’s always bigger. We had good food told some good stories got some really cool awards and now we are ready for 2018. I would like to thank all that went together in giving me the Mark Cain

Sportsmen Award this year - that meant a lot to me and I want to thank everyone and Jeremy Smith. 2018 will be my 44th year racing and it has been a great time. I wouldn’t trade it for anything and hope I have six more in me to make 50, then I’ll have Jarred my son take it full time. Even then I’ll still be at the races seeing my weekend friends and family - having a whole lot of fun because that’s what motorcycles are about and why we ride. See you guys soon.” District 17 Enduro Director Ryan Moss was happy after another good season was wrapping up, seeing some more good things coming for 2018. Moss, “The 2017 Enduro season saw ten events on the schedule this year with seven of these events requiring no lights, none requiring time keeping equipment and the first Sprint Enduro being held in IL. This year the series got to travel to many different places and all those had varied terrains to challenge even the best riders. With those challenges the series saw some great events and battles, thanks to all the clubs for putting the events on and to the riders for making it a great season. Our Grand Champion this year was Blake Ryan taking his first Overall Championship. Ryan had some challenges from early leader Anthony Krivi,
our 2013 and ‘14 champion. But Ryan put in some very consistent rides and was able to hold off up and up and comer Matt McDonald plus a few veterans of the series. Ryan comes from a long list of enduro riders and made the family proud. The best part of the ‘17 enduro season was seeing two young riders battle it out in the new 29 year old and under C class. Colin Kedzie and Troy Fabrizius, both under eighteen years old, something that we’d like to see more of at local enduros, battled all season. Colin put in more consistent rides throughout the year and was able to take the championship. The second-best part was having a family duo of father Jeremy Walker and son Jhadyn Walker race the
series. The Walkers are typically Hare Scramble riders but this year decided to try the enduros and it paid off for them.

Jeremy won the 30A championship. Jhadyn won the B class and the Overall B award. They loved the enduros having lots of single track and stated they’d be back next season. The District 17 Randy Hatcher Sportsman Award went Hill and Gully member Amy Cabellero. Amy helps not only her

We are also working with the Braaap shop to bring back the Top Ten Challenge for the 2018 season so look for an announcement on awards soon. Thanks to all the riders and families that came to the banquet! It was a pleasure to hand out the awards and see everyone doing some bench racing during this cold winter. out for two days of fun.” Trials riders in District 17 were fortunate enough to get in ever scheduled event in 2017. D17 Trials director Eric Miller, “The District 17 Trials season was a success. After the debut of what was the first ever indoor trial competition held in Illinois, we started our normal spring season. Although some events were wet and had to have some last minute course changes, we managed once again to have all of our scheduled events, a testament to both our rider base and clubs/ promotors. Another first time event was held in nearby Manchester, Iowa, and will be added to ours this year. We also are bringing back our District 17 State Championship event this year, with a venue some of us have never seen in White City. This will give our riders a nice mix of fresh and also familiar ones to ride. A welcome sight at our events was the increased presence of younger riders, especially in the upper classes. This tells me that our previous youth riders have stuck with trials long enough to get that good. Some of these riders are third or fourth generation trials riders, while others are converts from other disciplines. The family vibe at the events was definitely felt. All these show the good state of health of trials in our district. The season concluded with the awards banquet. Again, families came to congratulate their loved ones and also to have some fun with their extended “trials” family. Over half of the season award winners were able to attend and receive recognition. Three riders (Ray Cosgrove, Wyatt Beaird, and Jason Waldo) rode all twelve events, with Jason and Ray winning their classes and Wyatt self advancing midseason, yet turning in

The tenacity of this little guy is going to be a force to be reckoned with as he advances.” 2017 delivered another great season of Dirt Track racing in District 17, stated Director Mike Bender. “Several classes went down to the wire, with first through third being determined at the final event of the season. Pekin Motorcycle Club’s new TT configuration provided some close, tight battles and was a great way to finish off the season. The closest battle had to go to the Youth Quad JR class, with Bayleigh Thomas and Deagan Brown tying in points and Bayleigh getting the championship based on higher win count. Vintage was also very close with the top three separated by thirteen points. We added two new classes to the championship this season - Youth Quad JR and SR and had good participation, with several riders attending all of the events. For 2018, we’ve made some modifications to the 86-200cc class and renamed it to Super Schoolboy. I was encouraged to see quite a few new younger riders joining us this season, hopefully that trend continues as we’ll be needing plenty of fresh, young blood to keep our sport going! Lastly, District 17 is saying good bye
and good luck to two of our seasoned amateurs as they will be joining the Pro ranks in 2018, Colton Featherston and Kyler Adams. Good luck boys and show ‘em why we’re called the “FBI”- I know you’ll do us proud!” Matt (Hillclimb Director) and Martha Peters shared their thoughts on the Hillclimb season. “2017 seemed to have had higher numbers in the youth classes than the previous year. It’s always great to see the new upcoming youth riders and their excitement for the sport. The higher numbers mainly showed up in 50cc class with several new riders challenging the hill and each other. The season ended with nineteen races at seven clubs. District 17 has one of the largest event schedules in amateur hill climbing. At this year’s banquet, special awards were awarded to Trenton Ballinger with youth raw points. Michael Pulver was awarded adult raw points. Adult fast time went to Levi Peters with eleven wins. Youth fast time went to Lilah McGurer with eight. The end of the year King of the Hill was awarded to Levi Peters. 2018 is going to be a very busy season with twenty-three district events already scheduled. The 2018 season should be a very exciting year and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone again soon. Long time Motocross and Stadium Motocross Director Gerhard Ward said it was a good season, and that he was already looking forward to 2018. Ward,
“2017 for motocross was a year of rain filled weekends with likely more cancelations then one can remember in past years. But this didn't dampened the spirit of the riders though. Once again the AMA District 17 Banquet was well attended. Special thanks to OCR racing for all the goggles that were donated for door prizes! A few rider seasons ere really worthy of special recognition; Nolan Dickinson won six mx/sx championships. First timer Brian White won the +25 and +30A classes in stadium. He has tried for many years on and off but never achieved the top step on the podium! Larry Bank won the +40 and +50 in stadium as well. From +50 to the 50cc classes, the competition was good all season and then as it was drawing near the end it became even more competitive. In 50cc 4-8, Cashton Dilley and Grant Robinson rode hard all season, in the end Dilley won the series. Both riders showed excellent improvement through the season. 65Jr was equally competitive with even more riders in the mix. Preston Zollers, Nate Bierbom, Tanner Haddon, and Kallin Thomas all rode a ton of races as the points battle heated up, with Preston taking the championship. His brother Tallon won 85Jr with Jasxon Schiller winning 50Sr. Conner Cooper has come a long way in under three years with 2017 being a CYCLE USA, April 2018

break out year for him and riding well to over come Lincoln Paxton's push in the class. Cooper won the 50Jr class with solid riding. Other noteable wins were Erin Pusateri in Women and Tanyon Palka in the two Stadium C classes. Nick Manning came back from a stint with the Marines to bang his 2 stroke around and dominate the Open B class. Justin Kelly repeated his winning ways in the +25+ and +30A and snuck up and passed RJ Mackenzie late in the season
to make it a triple crown in Motocross by winning Open A as well. 2018 will see some new and different champions with the classes for the +25 and above ages changed up. Deleting the half age classes and implementing B/C classes for the "old folks" should propel the racing even more in District 17. A few less total races counting for the year end, and with the season already kicking off as we write this story, AMA District 17 Motocross and Stadium MX should be

firing on all cylinders this season!” District 17 has a new Gran Prix Director, Nick Balzer. It’s always cool seeing new individuals step up and offer to help at the District level... our sport is always better because of it. Balzer, “After watching my own club (Tri City Motorcycle club) slowly improve their GP attendance I saw a few key things that I thought could help the District. When I was approached by a few members of the district board about their want for me to fill the vacant seat, I really didnt hesitate. I’m really looking forward to growing Grand Prix racing this year. We’ve added Motosports Park back in for a GP in early July thanks to the Forest City Riders and Aaron of MSP, it is great having the facility back on our schedule. This and all out other events, it will be a great year. I look forward to getting to know everyone and to seeing you all at the track!” If you were part of this special night... again, congratulations! If you missed it, make sure to attend next season - even if you don’t chase the season points and awards, you’ll be welcomed and you will enjoy this evening.

The 2018 John Larson 3 Hour gets underway with 25 teams competing.
John Larson Memorial 3 Hour Rush City, Minnesota - February 25 By Tim McBride
J
ason Larson (no relation to John Larson’s family) who comes from an enduro racing background took top honors in two divisions at the annual John Larson Memorial 3 hour Ice Race held on Rush Lake, hosted by The Grumpy Minnow restaurant. Twenty five teams took part in the event where competitors were allowed two bikes and up to four riders to switch off with and take as many laps as possible in the shortest amount of time on the 2.7 mile circuit. To avoid a possible first turn yard-sale and keep it safe, race director Jason Larson (the other Jason Larson, John’s son no relation to the event winner) started the race with three rows of riders with electronic scoring devices mounted to their bikes. The rows would start in separate waves. Eventual race winner Larson cunningly used an enduro type fuel tank and competed by himself in the Iron Man class 28

and amazingly defeated all of the team divisions in the process. A feat that has been attempted by few, but now has been only accomplished by one. 2013 AMA, GNC Flat Track champion Brad Baker aboard the Team Anderson Motorsports’ Honda 450 (being from the Pacific Northwest this was his first time competing on an ice bike), grabbed the
early lead ahead of Larson and defending team champion Kyle Ohnsorg - lead rider for Team Smog. With years of ice riding experience under their belt, Larson and Ohnsorg made their way past Baker and pulled away from the rest of the field and raced in close formation for several laps. As the old saying goes, “everyone has a plan, until they run out of gas.” With

that, Larson’s race strategy fell into place when Ohnsorg’s bike sputtered to a halt far from pit lane and out of contention of a repeat performance. The miscue left Larson in control for the remainder of competition where he proved to everyone he was indeed an Iron Man. Larson, “We were going pretty hard until he (Ohnsorg) ran out of gas. I was able to relax a bit then, but with an hour left to go I thought ‘ugh’ I was getting tired, and the track was pretty rough.” Baker and teammate fellow flat tracker Kevin Anderson eventually won the Team division finishing second behind Larson. Rounding out the podium in third overall and first in the Old Guys +50 class were veteran MXer’s Bruce Gates, Dave Spizman and one of John Larson’s closest friends Mark Deal. When asked by a random rider about the cost of promoting a venue like this, event organizer Jason revealed the real reason he goes through all the effort, “It’s not about the money” he explained. “It’s about a bunch of good people on two wheels getting together and having fun. My dad is up there somewhere smiling down on all of us right now!”

2018 Indoor Racing Finale Cedar Lake Arena concludes great season as outdoor riding kicks off
Another good day with friends.....
New Richmond, Wisconsin - March 3
I
t seems odd to talk about a season ending as Spring arrives, but that’s the case with indoor racing and riding at the Cedar Lake Arena in New Richmond, WI. The facility is popular with riders and it’s common to find racers from four or more states in the mix at the races during their winter series. This Saturday afternoon delivered the final race of the four event series and it was another great one. You could tell riders have been putting in their time as everyone, even the youngest of riders seemed really tuned into the track. With eighteen riders, 50cc 4-8 was one of the larger classes again tonight, as it often is. With safety in mind, the riders were split into two groups that each run a first moto where the top seven advance to a combined
moto two. Others still get a second moto, a consi so their track time isn’t reduced. In heat one of the first motos, James Schaffer quickly jumped out to the front and then inched away for the win. Behind him, Carson Wittman ran in second through most of the first two laps before
Brecken Maas worked up for the pass. That set the order out front as Tucker Couette and KTM mounted Eli Anderson filled the top five. Louis Oswald had the quick reactions off the line in the second heat, leading Cooper Couette and Parker Metzger through turn one. Riley Edwards was on the charge and quickly took over third through the whoops as Couette was all over Oswald. In the second lap Couette fought his way next to Oswald through the jump section, then used a quick outside line through a long flat corner to take the lead. Once there, he was in control to the end for the win. In the final it was a Cobra freight train out front. Grabbing a big holeshot and leading everyone through the first lap, Maas was on fire. Back a little was Schaffer with Cooper Couette, Wittman and Edwards. Half way through the second lap, it all changed as Maas went down in a rutted corner. As he dropped back into the pack, Schaffer took over and there was no stopping the quick little guy while Couette held on in

front of Wittman for second. As impressive as these three were out front, the real show was put on by Maas climbing through the pack to make up for his fall. He made his final pass under the white flag for fourth, slipping by Oswald. South Dakota’s Austin Kienast owned the day’s A classes. He ran off with wins in both motos of 250A and Open A, then returned in the 15-19 Open class to grab two more wins, this time ahead of Jessob Pearson. Open B had some good close racing, that is it was close behind Dylan Smith. Grabbing the first moto holeshot, Smith pushed his Kawasaki to a growing lead early for the eventual win. Mitchell Prescott ran in second then had problems and slid back. Lowell Bronstad didn’t mind as he took over in second on his Honda and then held off a late moto push that saw Levi Dertien, Brady Peterson and Dalton Peltz make it a good battle right to the end. Smith came back in the second moto and topped them all once again. This time he had to work a little harder as Prescott kept everything together and ran well in second. Bronstad and Peterson fought over third with Bronstad holding 34

on... as well as second overall. Dertien had to work up from a bad start to make a late pass into fifth ahead of Noah Altman. Smith after the win, “It went pretty good out there. I got off to a nice holeshot and that helped. I’m on a borrowed bike so I’m not real used to it. I managed to put in another solid moto getting the win, so it worked out. I’ve been doing the entire series and today was another fun day.” Open C had fourteen riders fly into turn one and the following set of long whoops. By the end of those whoops Jacob Prescott had already gained a two bike length lead as Matt Mills and local
guy Vincent Gregersen were in second and third. The order stayed the same early with Matthew Voss in fourth. Working up, Lexi Dyekman was finding her pace. With two laps left, she pulled an inside line to slip past Voss for fourth as Lance Rosa fought to sixth. Prescott picked up where he left off in moto one - out front. Late in the moto he came under fire from Gregersen who seemed to find some extra speed. Prescott after the moto, “It was really nice to come out here and race after a few months off the bike. The track was a little one lined but I capitalized on good holeshots and made it happen. I got pushed in the second moto and wasn’t sure if I would hold on. I just tried to focus and stay up there and did for the second win.” Gregersen finished second, good for second overall also (3-2). Millis had to settle for fourth in the moto behind Dyekman who worked up once again. Millis still won in the overall score for third.

Thirteen 50cc 4-6 riders darted into the first turn for moto one with Carson Wittman leading Tucker Couette and Tyler Brindamour. With Wittman and Couette quickly settling into a good pace out front, Landon Kressman was looking to move up. As they started the third lap he found an opening and slid by Brindamour for third. Tyler Swygman finished fifth on his KTM. Wittman owned the second moto after another great start. Couette was running second, this time ahead of Swygman who was stepping it up after his fifth place in the first moto. Brindamour moved up a couple spots through the moto for fourth, leaving Oswald and Kressman in fifth and sixth. Minnesota’s Brad Cunningham had a good afternoon on the stadium styled track. He started his day by grabbing
both moto wins in the +50 class ahead of Jerry Turnbull, Mike Dertien and Neil Otey. Then to further test himself, he took on the younger guys in +40 and won, going 1-1. Scott Robinson pulled down second place in both motos ahead of Shane Millsap. Lexi Dyekman returned after racing Open C and ran off with both moto wins in the Women’s class on her 150cc KTM. As she left little doubt about earning the overall - Tatum Thorud did a great job of taking control of second place (2-2) ahead of Holly Erickson and Cherish Fischer. Dyekman after the moto, “I got good starts and put myself in the right position to take the wins. In the Open class I had to work up after bad starts. It was fun though. I live in Montana in the summer but I’m lucky to be close to this during

the winter.” On top of winning the Women’s class, she put in excellent rides to win both motos of the thirteen rider 250C class. New Richmond’s Brodie Boumeester took the holeshot in moto one of 85cc 912 and never looked back. Luke Geis put his Kawasaki into second ahead of Jamison Mutschler and Waylon Hastings down the first long set of whoops. Those four set the lead order until late in the moto. With very little time left, Milo Maas made a nice move to take over fourth and drop Hastings back to fifth. In moto two, Boumeester made it easy, taking his second holeshot and leaving the racing behind. Mutschler was in second this time and looking rock solid after a third in moto one. Maas, Hastings and Rj Thorus mixed it up for the next spots before Geis came charging through them to make up for a bad start. Boumeester after wrapping up a second win, “I just had to keep it consistent after my good starts. Once out front I kept thinking about the next corner and getting it right. I really like the whoops. I usually race Millville in the summer and have been riding in here since I was four so I’m doing pretty well.” Geis actually made it back up to second late in the moto, “I got like a last place start but managed to get to third by the third lap. I got into second when Mutschler hung up in a corner. The track was fun and had some nice ruts. I really used the corners to make up time and the passes. I’ve done all the races and finished second in points, so it has been a good season.” Mutschler recovered well for fourth ahead of Thorus and Maas as Hastings cruised in for third. Another successful race wrapped up early evening as planned. Being early March, the facility was winding down the indoor riding sessions as well. A sign of the season changing were temps into the fifties outside... snow melting and kids spending time playing outside between motos. As fun as this winter has been here at the Cedar Lake Arena - we’re ready for outdoor racing to kick-off. For those that have been riding and racing all winter, they’ll most likely find some extra success when the transitions comes. Results on Page 39 CYCLE USA, April 2018

Heavy Metal Trials Indoor event kicks off District17 Trials Season! Mendota, Illinois- March 17 photos by Nick Smith 893 photography
M
arch 17th and 18th was the start of the AMA District 17 Trials season at Megatraxs Indoor Riding Arena in Mendota, IL. Travis Ward and Eric Miller were trials masters of the weekend spending most of all their free time for two weeks prior to the event laying out fun and challenging obstacles. "Sections" is the term commonly used and with a two day event they needed to fill the indoor with all kinds of sections to keep the riders on their toes. Normally eight sections are used. This weekend there were twelve. That way there was four completely new tests on Sunday and combining the other eight into four bigger ones with changes made for two almost completely separate days of sections! 95% of all sections had to be "built" which was labor intensive, but these two riders had a blast making up the
event’s layout and it showed with the riders having a great time. Jason Waldo came out of an eleven year retirement last year to ride the first Heavy Metal event, and showed up to compete again this weekend! A vast and huge improvement over last year’s performance made him the man to beat this weekend. His hopping and balance improved leaps and bounds, it clearly shows he has put in his time. Riding in the Champ class he finished first on Saturday and then runner-up on Sunday. He had a couple missed attempts in section seven making it impossible for him to grab a second win. Waldo stayed til close on Sunday, riding another three hours after the event, showing his dedication is pretty solid! One of the most interesting aspects of this trials weekend was the kids! Many made it their first trials event ever, coming from motocross, harescrambles, gran

prix and just plain new riders, it was great to see the smiles and determination of them all. Aubry Ingold with dad in tow was a trooper making many obstacles on her own and others with dad’s help! Nine kids on Sunday was impressive to see. Kevan Ingold won both days on his Oset Electric machine! In fact there were multiple electric machines which is interesting to see, and well you don't hear much except the encouragements from family! Chasen Orme sporting his Braap Shop Beta competed in the adult class of Intermediate and after some first section jitters came back strong in the third loop to improve his scores each day. Saturday he went 8-12-3. Sunday on a more difficult layout he went 9-18-9. Almost all the riders in this class are double his age. He will be the rider to watch in the years to come as his improvements this season showed this weekend.
Jason Waldo takes on the biggest obstacles in the Champ class!
Knobby class was non-existent on Saturday but came back with five riders, mostly of the off-road persuasion. Casey Shatters on his 300 Beta "bulled" his way around til his finesse kicked in... as well as it could. Being known for his "extreme enduro" prowess, finesse and talent are replaced with shear strength and well, big dabs! If Casey makes it through the loop and the obstacles are still standing that is a true test of an event’s ability to withstand any storm. Jarred Hall from Halls Cycles (gas gas) was the Ironman of the day. He rode his 300 to a second place in Knobby class, put that bike away and got his 321 Trials Gas Gas out and then rode to an eighth in the Advanced class. Needless to say after
a long night at the Supercross in St. Louis and driving here to ride all day, his ride home was a long tired one! Nice work! Mark Misek improved just in one day, scoring a 2-9-2 on Saturday for a sixth, then coming back on Sunday with a 11-56 for a second! Listening to the riders it seemed that some sections tests were more difficult than last season in specific lines. All riders of course ride the same course but at times the difficulty showed on the faces. After all was tallied the smiles and accomplishments were evident. Riders from Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and of course Illinois competed both days for some "Heavy Metal Hardware!" Two events inside this season was the combi-

nation of the past outdoor trials at Fox Valley Off Road and the indoor. 2019, will be another two day event inside with more improvements and more ideas to kick off the season with a nice weekend of trials! Megatraxs once a year hosts this event which is a great challenge for Eric and Travis as they worked hard and hope everyone enjoyed the weekend! Have a great season and keep those "dabs" to a minimum! Or like Jesse says, "make sure to use your dabs strategically!" See you next year! In the 50cc 4-6 class, Wyatt Johnson made it two wins in a row. Owen Gomez and Cassie Fairfield finished 2-3. Travis Lentz brought home the 50cc 7-8 win with Cooper Duff and Cooper Lair in tow. Austin Burns made it two wins in a row in the 65cc Beginner class. In the morning mini race, Riley Roberts brought home the overall win out of the 85cc class. Lane Davis finished second.
Davin Shike took the 65cc win over Jack Allgeyer and Brady Dillbeck. Riley Walters made her return to the series after some time off to take the Women’s class win over Missy Norton and Rochelle Longstreth. After the morning minis finished, the big bike amateurs took over. Colin Lyon, out of Colona snagged the 98-200C class win by two minutes over round one winner Elijah Berryman as Gavin Minnaert rounded out the podium. Derik Tippie took his second win in a row in Open C. KTM rider Parker Townsend finished second as Owen Rowe held the last spot on the podium. Muscatine, Iowa’s Brian Cox took the Senior +40C win on his KTM over Ron Erickson and Lance Longstreth. When the afternoon big bike classes hit the track it was AA’s Austin Wells who took the holeshot aboard his Countryside Husqvarna TX300 with Yamaha-mounted Zack Sulzberger in second. Wells swapped the lead a couple times with Colt Converse and three time WFO champ Sulzberger before Sulzberger gain ed the lead around the second lap mark and never looked back. He quickly gapped the field and maintained a solid lead to take the overall win. Converse would succumb to arm pump and drop back. The battle of the day was between Wells, last year’s D17 Hare Scramble champ Matt McDonald and ex-GNCC Pro rider Adam Bonneur. The three stayed close most of the day until Wells and Bonneur had to stop for fuel. McDonald finished second with Bonneur about twenty seconds back. In the highly-competitive Open A class, Jon Adkisson took his second win in a row while TJ Nees and Dustin McDonald rebounded from undesirable results in round one to finish on the podium here. Luke Kaszynski brought home the win in the +30A class, stating this win was for his father, who had just passed away. “After a very emo-
tional week, it was a hard decision to race, but I know my dad would have wanted me to go racing and I was able to bring home the win. A little luck may have went my way, but I’ll take it. That one was for you dad!” Shea Dickson won the Quad A class by over two minutes over Kyle Burnham and Kyle Ernst. T
hey say it’s better to start small, do a really good job, then build on your accomplishments. That was far from the plan of the Wausau 525 group when they accepted hosting the AMA’s ATV National Ice Racing Championship. The team worked their rears off for months to get everything just right... to do it perfectly the first time and they did! The man made ice course and facility was just right. Their was plenty of help everywhere from on the track to parking, sign-up, food vending... all of it was better than anyone could have asked for. The only downside to the event was a disappointing attendance something out of the control of the 525 team. Why was it smaller than expected? It could have been an ice and snow storm in the Chicago area that made coming from the east or south a scary trip. Maybe this being a new venue for this event, or the AMA’s decision to split the
bikes off into a stand-a-lone event in Michigan earlier in the season. Possibly there just isn’t a real deep pool of ATV ice racers in the region? None of it mat-
ters now, as all that will be considered when planning this event next year. Our hopes are that the AMA makes the right decision, comes to the 525 group and en-

courages them to do this event again in 2019, with the bike classes included. The 525 team ran this event that well... the AMA needs them involved, our opinion anyway. This all said, the racers that were here put on a great show with plenty of close racing. As a spectator, it was still fantastic to have been there. Some of the fastest riders on ice topped the premier classes, often having their hands full in earning the wins. One of the first National classes on the

ice was for the Open Studded Sportsman riders. Birnamwood, WI’s Cole Sowinski led every lap of the race, but never had a chance to consider relaxing. After getting chased hard through two laps by Markus Catlin the race was red flagged for a restart with someone down on the track. Sowinski again grabbed the lead, this time he had Kyal Prochnow who got around Catlin to put the pressure on. The three were tight right to the checkered flag and even the announcer was shy about saying who won until the scoring
team pointed out Sowinski on his Honda had held on. Sowinski showed his versatility jumping on a non-studded quad next to win the rubber version of the same class ahead of Sun Prairie, WI’s Kaelin Kjaldgaard. A rider that wins in both a studded and non-studded class is doing something right. In the National Open Rubber (nonstudded) Expert class there were ten riders in the final. Corbin Kostyn led early as it was quickly obvious with how tight all the riders were that this race was far from over. Each lap saw a new challenge from either Nick Nett or John Groff. Then by mid race a familiar front runner from the Open Sr class showed his magic. Working from fourth, Jeremy Flees was pulling lines no one else was considering, going extremely high early to tuck in tight coming out. He went past early leader Kostyn then Groff for second behind Nett with one lap left. Flees explained his riding after the race, “I started dropping back early then sort of found my grove and came out on the bottom of turn four in each of the last few laps. You really have to thread the needle out there when you are in traffic and some snow dust, but after thirty years of doing this I’ve figured a few things out and it worked today.”
Flees used his last lap to pull the same move coming out of turn four and snag a second win on the day. Nett finished second ahead of another charger, Dylan Seis who worked up to third ahead of Kostyn. R&J Autosports backed Flees also shared his thoughts on the event, “the course and track is awesome and everyone here is doing a great job. Hopefully we can do it even bigger next year.” The Open Studded Expert riders left it all on the ice, literaily. A combined four re-starts do to crashes and early race leader Craig Melville breaking his quad made for a high pressure short sprint to the finish in the end. Always in contention, Wesley Asbach held tough and managed to keep everyone else behind off three separate starts for the impressive win in this National awarding class. Asbach, “the day went really well. In the Kold Kutter race I had a great start then just hooked up and got the win. This time it was tough with all the restarts. I was able to make a couple passes and then with the restarts we had one guy break so it just worked out. You have to be there at the end. I work at a small engine shop called Cranky Scott’s and we build atv engines and such so I know my Jesse Leu topped the Open A motorcycle support class.
way around a motor and I think that helps, as a fast ride can make a difference on a big track like this for sure. I do some dirt track in the summer and I’m getting a bike to try that this year, so that should be fun and all new. This facility is wonderful and we had a beautiful day. The officials and all the volunteers did a great job. With the smaller turnout the pace was so quick that I was late getting back for one of my races and they worked with us all on stuff like that. I’m already looking forward to next year if we can do it here again.” Eleven Quads were lined up for special payout in the Kold Kutter Clash (thank you Kold Kutter). The first and second rows were determined by earlier heat races, and with this group a good start was going to be so important as they were all running really well. Even after two restarts do to downed riders, Crandon, WI’s Wesley Asbach kept his #1 marked Yamaha out front all the way for the big win. Behind him there was some juggling but Michigan’s Jonathan Stierile got it done despite serious efforts from Dylan Waldvogel and Eric Hart. A final class of the day was another non-national class, but highlighted all the
non-studded riders for a cash payout in a Rubber Clash. While Flees, Seis, Nett and others challenged no one could top Corbin Kostyn this time. He got out front and inched away to deliver his best ride of the day. Kostyn, “I pulled the holeshot, then we had a restart and I got it again. Once there I put my head down and tried to run away with it and everything worked. Anyone of the top half of the class can win this but once out front I changed my line a bit and I think it really helped. The track is beautiful and you can easily tell how much effort went into making this a really right day.” In addition to the National classes there were a couple support classes, including a few for bikes. In the Open A class regular fast guy Jesse Leu jumped out front and never looked back. Leu, living right here in Wausau had the fans happy to see a local guy getting the win. Andrew Engen ran in second the entire way with Ian Malinowski trying his best to sneak by in every corner. The close race came right down to the final turn when Malinowski’s efforts paid off, as he got just under Engen as they crossed the finish line. In the 85cc motorcycle class Ethan

Ramsey was quick off the line to take the early lead ahead of Jack Brucks and Colton Frandsen. Just like in the heat race earlier, Brucks took his time setting a pace, then made his move to the front for the eventual win. Brucks celebrated his eighth birthday at the track, taking home the first place trophy as well. We caught up 525 Director Cara Spatz after the event, asking about her team and the upcoming season. Spatz, “Our volunteers during the AMA ATV Ice Grand National Championships were our regular Wausau 525 group, our friends from the Rib Mountain Riders, a group from the Rib Mountain Lions Club and a local boy scout troop. We are very fortunate to have a devoted group of Wausau 525 volunteers, they are our biggest asset, not only during the events but year round helping to maintain this facility. The Rib 50

Mountain Riders have been a great support to us and our events as we have been starting to host motorcycle and ATV racing in summer and now in winter. This summer we will be hosting our 6th annual August-Oh Fest. This year we decided to switch it up a little and have the motorcycle/ atv racing on Saturday. This should further improve track conditions by moving the race to later in the day, and make our schedule easier for the racers by having the two races back to back on Friday on Saturday. All our events at the Wausau 525 Track help us raise money for Flip's Fund which is a charity that supports area children with various medical needs, annual college scholarships for local high school students, the Rib Mountain Lions Club, the Boy Scouts, and other like-minded organizations.
