CYCLE USA, August 2015

By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Even though July is the busiest month of the year for many of us between our racing and helping with events it was an unusually slow month business wise for the district board. Our last meeting was short in comparison to most. We did discuss a few issues that we need to work on. The main one being the web site and making sure the members are getting access when it is requested. If you are having trouble getting approved for access let me know via e mail so I can get it fixed ASAP. We are still looking at awards bids from different suppliers we will finalize that decision in September. We will be applying for a grant to train more Dirt Bike Instructors through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, our goal is to have enough instructors to cover the entire state and hopefully include the program at more of our facilities. It is critical to our future that we make access to riding easier, offer beginner training and get the kids involved early. Our promoter group will be discussing standardizing some non points beginner classes to be offered at all or most tracks. Off-road has done this already quite successfully. The highlight of the month for me is the Pro National motocross race, not only for the racing but also because the event is a reunion of sorts as I get to see many friends that have moved away. This year I got to catch up with Joe Cartwright past vice chairman and AA off-road racer. Bob Chase AKA MXBob was back it was nice to see him although we did not have enough time to totally catch up. Brian Fisher was back with one of his son and grandkids it was really nice catching up with him. Brian was good friends with Donny Schmit they rode together often and it always fun to hear more stories from Brian. Lyle Sweeter who was one of the first State Champions back in the early days of MX in our state makes the trip back every year to race with us and show why he was the State Champ. Although this event takes a tremendous amount of work and preparation time it is all worth it when it comes together successfully. I was lucky enough to be able to help in planning the opening ceremony. We were able to incorporate a special

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... tribute to the 4 Marines that were killed in Chattanooga TN the week of the race. It was a somber moment but a fitting and earned tribute to those four men. We were also able to gather event workers and friends to carry the huge American Flag down the start line similar to the SX openings. It was moving and a real honor to be able to participate in the ceremony. It is important to remember and honor all of those people that have sacrificed so much so that we can be Free to participate in our sport or should I say our passion. We still have a lot of our season left, many events will be held in the next three months. I urge you to make it to as many as you possibly can. Not only for the fun and competition but the experiences and the people. The people I’ve met through riding are some of the best I have ever known. We’re more than racers, we are a family and that really comes out every time I go to an event and see all those people I have met over the years. Best of luck to all of you at each event you attend and keep making memories no one can ever take them away from you and they will lend you support all through life. See you on the tracks, trails and roads of Minnesota. Mike Employment opportunity. Nagy cashes in at Azzie Lake Mills, Wisconsin - July 12 By Morgan Strauss

A

ztalan Cycle Club hosted a great weekend of racing for the short track and motocross double header. Not only was the weather beautiful, but there was also a $1,000 purse plus 100% payback for the 250A and Open A races, and holeshot awards and giveaways in all classes thanks to the club, Rob’s Performance Motorsports, Best Tile Works, and Bel-Ray. It made for a perfect stop for all the racers traveling from Red Bud to Millville. The track crew made sure to have the track prepped, and put down plenty of water to keep the track conditions up to par for a busy day of racing. When the gate dropped in PeeWee Jr., Nolan Simonton was on the throttle for the holeshot, with Ryder Skodras right behind. By the time the riders reached the second lap, Skodras already took ahold of the lead with Simonton, Nathan Waldron, Chase Blazek, and Matthew Alshouse behind. Skodras was able to pull away from the rest of the riders and held onto first for the remainder of the race. Simonton finished second, with Waldron and Blazek rounding off the top four. In the second moto, Simonton once again was able to clinch the holeshot with Skodras right on his rear fender. Skodras pushed ahead of Simonton for first, and started to put a gap on the other riders. During the second lap, Blazek found a way around Simonton for second. Skodras (1/1) took the overall, followed by Simonton (2/3) and Blazek (4/2).

Skodras on his win, “I think the race went really good, the track was great, and my starts were very good too! I won both races! I’m excited for Loretta Lynn’s, which is coming up soon, and Aztalan was the perfect way to get good practice in. I’d like to thank Rob’s Performance Motorsports, and my whole family!” As Women’s hit the track, Jade Wennlund was able to rush ahead and pull off the holeshot in moto one. By the time the riders reached the plateau, Kaylen Pellman had taken over first, with Wennlund, Monica Jazwiecki, and Amanda Gibson following. By the start of the second lap, Pellman put a gap on the rest of the riders, and held on strong to the Riley Busse cheers on his buddy, Ryder Skodras in 50Jr. first place spot

with Wennlund, Jazwiecki, and Gibson taking the following positions. Pellman picked up the second moto holeshot, but Wennlund wasn’t letting off. As the riders made it to the plateau, Jazwiecki and Dana Hanna were shortly behind. Pellman once again was able to put some distance on Wennlund and held onto first for the rest of the race. Wennlund continued for second, with Jazwiecki taking third and Hanna taking fourth. It was a great day in Sportsman B/C, where Taylor Strauss was on the throttle, taking the holeshot ahead of Kail McCormack, Mason Persha, and Chad West. Persha found an opening, and made his way around McCormack for the second as Strauss pulled away. When they hit the track for moto two, Strauss once again was out front, with Persha, McCormack, Ian Malinowski, and West behind him. By the start jump in lap two, Strauss started putting a gap on Persha, with McCormack holding onto third. Jake Garwood started putting pressure on West and Malinowski, and moved into the fourth place position. CYCLE USA, August 2015

Strauss took first at the checkers, followed by Persha, McCormack, and Garwood. Strauss, “The day went really well, I won both motos of Sportsman B/C and got 2nd in 250B and 450B. The track crew did an awesome job on the track, and it stayed great and rutted all day. I would like to thank my mom and dad, Rob’s Performance Motorsports, PR2, EVS, Bell Helmets, FMF, Pro Honda oils, Ben Carlson, and the Warner family.” It was a big day for 250A, where there was a $1000 payout and 100% payback on the line for the 20 minute plus two lap race. As the gate dropped for moto one, Alexander Nagy was ready and grabbed the holeshot in front of Scott Zont and Josh Philbrick. Ty Tyrrell and Eli Walters found their way around Zont for third and fourth. By the third lap, Nagy was still on the throttle out front, putting a small gap between him and Philbrick. Walters and Zont continued to battle for fourth, with Zont taking over the position by the time they reached the plateau for the third time. The riders held onto their positions until the seventh lap, when Zont moved around Tyrrell for third. Nagy stayed out front until the checkers, with Philbrick second, Zont third, and Tyrrell taking fourth. In moto two, Nagy again was out front for the holeshot with Zont holding second, followed by Philbrick, Walters, and Tyrrell. By the fourth lap, Walters and Tyrrell made the move around Philbrick for third and fourth. By the middle of the race, Tyrrell moved past Walters for third. 8

Nagy held on to take the win, with Zont second, Tyrrell third, and Walters fourth. Nagy walked away with the overall and big payout, followed by Zont (3/2) and Tyrrell (4/3). With over twenty +45 class riders lined up, it was bound to be a good race. When the gate dropped, Frank Weiss took the holeshot in front of Daryl Willing. By the time they hit the plateau, it was still Carl Hein, Tim Boblin, and Tom Ferguson giving chase. After a battle for fourth between Boblin and Ferguson, Ferguson moved in front of Boblin for the position. By the third lap, Weiss continued to run away with Willing in second, Hein third, and Ferguson in fourth. Behind Ferguson, Glen Korn started to move in on Boblin for fifth. As the riders came over the start jump in the fourth lap, Boblin and Korn weren’t giving up their close battle. By the time they reached the plateau, Korn found a way to move past. In the second moto, Weiss once again stole the holeshot. By the plateau, Hein had ahold of the second place spot, followed by Ferguson, Boblin, and Jeff

World wide turnout for Spring Creek Regional Millville, Minnesota - June 19-21 By Keith McKenna

S

Collin Fletchall is sure to impress the fairer gender with his hard earned second place effort while Nicholas Wicherham got the third place hardware. The home track advantage was in effect in the 450A class for sure. #194 Jerry Robin from Corcoran, MN who rocked the motocross world a few years back by taking titles at the Loretta Lynn Nationals on a very vintage Honda CR250 2-Stroke bike, parked the vintage iron this weekend, and instead pulled out the decidedly NON-vintage Yamaha YZ450F and proceeded to bolster his cache of race winning awards with a 1-2-1 tally. Robin had to pull out all the stops and give 110% to pull out the win. Consistency ruled the day for the Yamaha rider as the competition, while nipping at his heels all day, had mixed moto results. Second on the podium was #29 Henry Miller, from just down the road in Rochester, MN. Miller went 5-3-2 for the silver and the bronze finisher, Jacob Grzebinski, would come from 2-1-7 motos. The 250C class was represented by riders from all over the United States moto world. Colin Polston from Kansas toasted some serious dinosaur remnants to climb to the top of the leader board by laying waste to the field in moto one. Polston must have

spent serious energy in the first outing because in moto 2 and 3 he was bested by Kyle Repstock from Kentucky. Because of an 8th place finish in moto one, Repstock missed the top step by the slimmest of margins. Austin Aspros came down from the frozen tundra of Brainerd MN to pull down third. The heavy hitters were out in force for the Open Pro Sport division. Benny Bloss from Missouri came to make a statement! Jerry Robin, Egan Mastin and Henry Miller all tried in vein to tamp out the fire that was burning hot under Bloss, but the Yamaha rider would be having none of it! He had the measure of the field in all three motos. Robin, went 3-2-2 for second overall with Egan Mastin from Georgia finishing third. Hard work by the staff and volunteers at Spring Creek Motocross made for a very memorable weekend for all in attendance. In talking with the mother of a racer that came from Illinois, where according to her, at their home track the hills were built by track maintenence vehicles, they were blown away by the terrain. Spring Creek mandates possessing the skills of a surgeon, with the power of the space shuttle to turn a fast lap.

pring Creek Motocross Park in beautiful Millville MN, played host to the North Central Regional qualifier on June 20th 2015. Racers came from "far and wide" to compete for the chance to get a ticket to the national, coming from more than twenty states, and a couple countries. In the Junior 25+ class, Black Diamond MX Graphics, Team Tenkom Racing's #308 Nick Jackson from nearby Lake City took first overall in motos 1 and 3 in dominating fashion. In moto 2 Jackson finished second in a race long battle with Kawasaki mounted Josh Mast from Missouri. So with Jackson claiming gold on his Yamaha YZ250F, second overall went to Illinois’ Ty Tyrrell on a Yamaha. #351 Kyle Repstock came all the way from the burg of Fairdale, KY with eyes to score a big win in the 250C race. In the first two motos he would flat-out dominate in the loamy fast conditions. Bad luck struck in moto three that had Repstock finish in the 17th spot, for a very disappointing 4th overall. Caine Dodson would "pull a Dungey" and ride trouble free and just in control, to clock a 1-2-2 to bring home the big prize, with Keegan Kleinwolterink from South Dakota in third. There were fortyseven riders signed up for the 450B division from all over, and I mean all over the United States, from Washington state to Texas to Tennessee and all points in between. John Citrola loaded up the Honda, gassed up the motorhome and set the compass to go east for 16.5 hours go get to the rugged hills of Spring Creek MX and was grateful that he did. His efforts paid dividends in the form of moto finishes of 1-2-2. Good enough for first overall in his ultracompetitive class. #71 Carter Hutcherson of London England nails the holeshot in the first moto of the 450B race. 10

Fox Valley Off-Road Trials Wedron, Illinois - July 5 By Liz Jeffries

I

ndependence weekend usually includes a few things: family, friends, and fun. And this weekend the best place to get all of those was Fox Valley Off-road park, located outside of Ottawa IL. They once again opened their gates to the District 17 trials community, and for the second year they had created a unique dual opportunity, running a trials and a GP contest on the same day, allowing both types of riders an opportunity to ‘see the other side’. This trials contest is unique for several reasons. It is run early, a 9 am start time as opposed to the normal 10 or 11, allowing for more of the GP riders to participate if they wish. The loop is a spectator’s dream: a single two lane wide gravel road running barely a half mile, with all the sections marked close together, allowing for a great viewing and photo opportunities. The land itself was amazing. The sections were all in the creek area, providing a lot of varied terrain for all the classes. Riders had to negotiate creeks filled with jumbles of rocks smoothed to the finish of bowling balls, sandy bottoms, muddy banks lined with roots, and steep drop-offs. And to make it extra special, the ‘Enduro’ section where riders had to negotiate over the sides of standing tires and log stacks. The day started at 9, where a large group of trials and GP riders met. The GP riders with their larger bikes (except for those opting to ride in the Women’s, Beginner’s or Novice classes, were riding in their own class, the Knobby class, which at Fox Valley was taking on the Intermediate lines (intermediate being the difficulty level between Novice and Advanced). A large group had come out to try this, so many that at times it seemed like they outnumbered the trials riders! In fact, there were fifteen Knobby riders, the second largest class behind the Intermediates who had seventeen. The trialsmasters had done an amazing job setting the difficulty level of the lines. The weather held out and we were greeted with warmth and sun, a welcome relief from the almost constant rains of June. The Women, Beginners, and Youth 12

riders were doing three loops of four sections. The Knobby class was doing two, to allow them time to get ready for the GP. Everyone else was riding three loops, which went fast with the closeness of the sections. Also, a great group of volunteers had shown up to help check, making things flow even smoother. At the end of the day the Knobby class was won by Nolan Blaesing. The Vin-

The day ended early for the trials riders, but there was plenty of fun left to go. Just as we were wrapping things up, the first race of the GP was just getting underway. It was definitely a full day of fun out at Fox Valley, and a big thanks to the volunteers who helped make it a wonderful event. So until next time, Happy riding everyone!

tage class was topped by Brandon Prouty, with Jeff Franklin taking the top spot for the Senior class. Chasen Orme edged out Che Anglin and Darrin Hermin for the Youth, and Anna Rushbrook took the top spot in the six person Women’s class. Doyle Sutherland took first place in the Novice class, with Scott Heininger once again taking the first home for the Intermediate class. Rocks, rocks, and rocks! Baraboo, Wisconsin - July 18/19 By Kevin Huber, photos by Nancy Littlefield

T

he July 18th and 19th Wisconsin Observed Trials Association (WOTA) event on Mountain Road in Baraboo has more rocks than any other event, and Trialsmaster Jim Vougtlander was able to use them to create very challenging sections. The higher the class the bigger the rocks that had to be crossed. There were also a few logs thrown in to give the riders additional obstacles. Early Saturday morning it rained. Luckily, WOTA switched to using plastic marking arrows instead of the old paper arrows so the rain didn’t affect the section markings. It stopped raining before the event, but it still made the rocks wet and slippery. In addition, the temperature and humidity was high. This gave the riders a good test of their stamina. Water was provided at the far end of the course to keep everyone hydrated. By the end of the event there were many sweaty, tired, but happy competitors. Sunday brought a little cooler temperatures and less humidity. The cooler temperatures may be why a few more riders showed up than were there on Saturday. There was a different set of sections full of rocks for the riders to traverse. Competitors still had to be on their game to maneuver over the tricky sections. Again, there were smiles on the riders as they turned in their score cards at the end of the day. To see a little of the action at Baraboo there is a very good youtube video made by one of the spectators at https://youtu.be/gJkgkgqujus that you can watch. Sayles tops Crystal Falls ProAm Crystal Falls, Michigan - July 11 By Cody Wills

W

ith a weekend off between Red Bud and Millville on the Pro National circuit, Valley raceway was the perfect stop for riders looking to earn a few bucks between rounds. That made it a perfect time for Valley Raceway to get a Pro-am back on their schedule. The riders filed in Friday night and through the wee hours of the night as most privateers do. With the other riders that followed it looked to be a good turnout at Valley Raceway, and the beautiful Northern Michigan weather was there to greet them. The 250B class was stacked with some good talent. Cody Warren made a return to racing this year and he made his presence known by grabbing a couple of holeshots. Colin Hass made his presence known as well by making sure he got out

It was another excellent weekend in Crystal Falls, MI. It was great to get a Pro Am back up north and have a good turnout of riders. The track couldn’t have turned out better, as the Valley Raceway crew did an amazing job of making sure we never saw any dust and that every sand berm had the perfect moisture in it. Anderson, Koch top Cambridge Cambridge Minnesota - June 24 By Tim McBride

T

he North Central Dirt Track Association hosted the second round of the District 23 dirt track series at the Cambridge Fairgrounds 1/4 mile oval, where AMA National numbers #25Kevin Anderson and #68-Josh Koch split victories in the pro motorcycle classes. The 450 Pro class saw Koch score the heat race win over Anderson, Andrew Hook and upstart Pro contender Jeremiah Lindberg. Anderson turned the tables in the main event however by pulling the holeshot, but soon came under fire from Koch a few laps into the race. Koch attempted an outside pass in turn three but slid off the groove and lost contention while Anderson raced his Diesel Minnesota sponsored Honda to victory with room to spare. Koch finished second ahead of what was a close race for third between Lindberg, Cole Fealy and Hook

until Hook crashed heavily late in the race. The Open Pro main event saw a newly determined Koch score a wire to wire win aboard his Anderson Plumbing backed Honda, ahead of Anderson. Lindberg landed the third place again with Fealy and an obviously healthy Hook. In other racing action Lindberg had a solid day by notching wins in the Open A and the 250/450A classes. The Open A main event saw Lindberg chased to the checkers closely by Rich Delak, and the rest of the twelve rider pack. The 250/450 main saw Delak in control throughout the race until Lindberg stole the win with a last lap pass in turn four. The +30 main event saw Wade Wessels score the win ahead of newcomer Craig Dye, who finished second after passing his flat track mentor Delak on lap three. The Quad division saw Ryan Bruggeman score his first Open Pro/Am main event win of the season. Bruggeman was

#69 Wade Wessels won the +30 class. #71 Craig Dye passed #17 Rich Delak on lap three to finish second.

#10 Ryan Bruggeman won the Quad Pro/Am main. #111 Brock Zychowski spun out on the last lap giving #777 Dalton Mains second place.

hounded by perennial front runner and Open A event winner Brock Zychowski. As the twosome pulled away from the rest of the field Zychowski spun out in turn two on the final lap allowing Bruggeman to score the win sans the pressure. Zychowski’s miscue gave Dalton Mains second place honors, as he recovered in time to finish third. The two heats of the Quad 16/24 were won by Mark Neidermire and Brandon Mattson. When the checker flag flew in the main event it was Jake Cornelius stealing the show with a last pass over race leader and Beginner C event winner Derrick Mattson. Amanda Flanscha finished third with Neidermire, Mattson, Jacob Zwart and Marshall Bridges in tow. Nuke Series Mid-Season

Byron, Illinois - July 19 By: Josh Rud, More photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

T

he Nuclear series is passing the half way point out at Byron Motosports Park as the sixth round kicked off on July nineteenth. It was a great day of racing with the track layout ever evolving. A new start section has been added with a much wider first turn as well as the finish line being moved to where the sand rollers used to be, adding in a nice table top for some spectacular finish line jumps. June was full of rain now switching over to some major heat in July. Luckily today was pretty mild for how the rest of the month has been, keeping everyone comfortable. Things got underway with the 250A class. In the first moto Ty Tyrrell came out in front followed by Daniel Sanders and Travis Ruchti. The gates dropped on the second moto of a three wide pack going into the first turn with Tyrrell nudging out front with Chris Antolak and Ruchti right next to each other. Heading into the sweeper Antolak was on his Husqvarna hard to pull into second. Sanders was close the entire moto as the four of them stuck to each other through-out the race. After several attempts, Sanders blasted through the sand to take over third and was showing Antolak a tire in several corners. The race came to a close with Tyrrell taking the overall, Sanders second going 2-3 and Antolak in third overall (4-2). Schoolboy was hot with Christopher Fortier taking the win in moto one followed by Anthony Wallace and Eddie Norred Jr. Off the gate in the second moto 18

CYCLE USA, August 2015

Fortier took a hard digger, leaving Wallace up front. Chase Boykin dropped in behind Wallace for second. Coming into the second corner Norred went wide and shot to the inside of the sweeper to take over second. Meanwhile Fortier was back up and trying to salvage his ride. The group stayed close as the laps wore down with Wallace getting pressure from Norred the entire time. They crossed the line with Wallace taking the win and the overall for the day. Norred landed in second overall and Fortier managed third overall, after climbing back to fifth in the moto after his crash at the start. 250C was certainly a good race with the gates holding twenty-nine riders at the start. In the first moto Jimmy Epifanio took the win with Michael Billon and Bobby Zeilinski rounding out the top three. As the group charged the first corner to start the second moto, Stephen Kupferschmid jumped out front for the early lead followed by Epifanio and Billon. Hitting the first table Epifanio flew by Kupferschmid on a mission, with Billon still in third. As they came down the hill to the new finish line Billon went hard on the outside to take over second, and started to push towards the front. Kupferschmid was meeting a lot of opposition as Nathan Wilson was

pressing him with the two going side by side several times. The checkers came down with Epifanio out front taking the overall (1-1), Billon grabbed up second overall and Tanyon Palka took third overall with a fourth and sixth place finish for the day. Kupferschmid held on for third in the moto, and fourth overall after finishing eighth in the first moto. 250B saw Christopher Fortier out of Florida taking the win in the first moto; he has been up here all summer training with Club 57. Anthony Wallace finished second and Stuart Schwagerman putting his Yamaha into third. The gate dropped on the second moto with Fortier taking off with a strong lead from the beginning followed by RJ Mackenzie and Wallace. Mackenzie held them off for several turns, but Wallace was on a mission and took over second place right after the first table

top. Soon the follow was Schwagerman, digging deep and running inside of the next sweeper to take over third. At this point Fortier had checked out and would stay out front all the way to the finish, taking the overall for the day. Wallace crossed in second again as Schwagerman repeated his first moto finish as well. It was a great day out at Motosports Park with everything run smooth as ever. The track was in great shape with very little maintenance needed through-out the day.

Wade Wild on Father’s Day Polo Illinois - June 21 By Kevin Northrup, photos by Martha Peters

W

ade Schultz had a great Father’s Day at the Rock Rivers hill climb, claiming two class wins and overall fast time of the day. Add to that his daughter, Emily, winning the Women’s class, the Schultz family went back to Iowa with big smiles on their faces. Wade’s first win came in the Open class where he flew his big bore 4 cylinder Suzuki over the top in 3.582 seconds, taking that win and slipping under Junior Jackson for the fast time award. Jackson had posted a 3.864 second time on his Kawasaki to win the 600cc 4 Stroke class and take the lead in the chase for Fast Time of the Day. Mike Sarver was second with Kurt Krohmer third behind Schultz. But Schultz wasn’t done, as he brought his big 4 banger back in the Senior (+40) class and sailed it over in an eye popping 3.464 seconds for that class win and an even faster fast time. Junior Jackson posted another sub four second run on his Honda to claim second place. Mike Pulver also broke into the 3’s with a 3.914 second run for third place, after crashing on his first ride. Paul Hackbarth and Troy Camerer followed Jackson in the four stroke class. But, being a proud father, Wade was even happier with his daughter Emily’s victory in the Women’s class. Emily topped the hill on both of her rides, her first round 5.433 second time good for the win. Morgan Wheelwright was second with Amber Fraedrich third. Matt Peters was also a happy daddy as he took the 450cc class win while his son Levi was the winner in the 200cc class. Matt overtook Matt Altfillisch, who had set the first round time to beat in the 450cc class on his Honda. Peters flew his KTM over in a sizzling 4.084 seconds on his second ride to take the win, while Altfillisch’s brother, Chad posted a very impressive 4.121 second run to slip under his brother for second. Matt Altfillisch also delivered an impressive second round ride, a 4.148 second run, but had to settle for third. Only 64 thousands of a second separated these top three 450cc class riders! Levi Peters took the first round lead in the 200cc class with a 4.734 second time, then followed it with a class winning 4.591 second time on his second ride. Morgan Wheelwright took second in 4.759 seconds with Jeff Jack third. Morgan still gave her dad, Eric, a good 20

layton Vonmoos swept the second annual Dairyland Amateur short track races at the Oshkosh Speedzone, winning the 250 Amateur, 505 Amateur, and Open Amateur classes. Vonmoos led nearly every lap of each race he entered, turning in an impressive performance. One hundred seventy entries from five states signed up to compete on the 3/8-mile dirt track. Captain Chuck Calvert won both the Quad A and Open Quad finals, leading every lap in the process. Jordan Schwarm led Tyler Martin home in the Quad A final, while Zach Zwirchitz and Aaron Jones rounded out the top three in the Open Quad final. Hayden Reitz and Dylan Waldbogel won the Quad B heats,

but Reitz led every lap of the final. Waldbogel started second, but faded to fourth at the finish behind Travis Stadler and Zach Zwirchitz. Travis Greene sat on the pole for the Quad C final, but followed Jeremy Czarapata and Dalton Hupf into turn one. Greene managed to claim the runner-up spot on lap two, and followed Czarapata home. In Youth competition, Dameon Klingman out-drag-raced Sam Bell to the line to win the 50cc Shaft final. Syndey Sund topped Colton Frandsen for the 50cc Four-Stroke win. Emmett Sund claimed wins in both the 65cc and 85cc divisions. In Amateur competition, Jim Kirschbaum and Vonmoos won the two 250cc Amateur heats, with Kirschbaum on the pole for the final. Vonmoos grabbed the holeshot and led every lap. Mason Barth grabbed the runner-up spot on the last lap from Kirschbaum. In 505cc Amateur action, Vonmoos and Michael Van Langen won the heat races. Vonmoos led from the pole position in the final and never turned a wheel wrong. Van Langen faded from a strong start to finish fourth behind Blake Berry and Parker Lange. Vonmoos continues his dominance in the Open Amateur division, winning both the heat and the final over Berry, Van Langen, and Lange. In Senior action, Jim Kirschbaum led every lap of the Vets final, with Brian Frandsen and Greg Barth in hot pursuit. Sergius Figliuzzi grabbed the holeshot in the Senior final but gave way to Jim Kirschbaum on lap two. Mike Anschutz overcame a poor start to claim the third spot from Greg Barth on lap four. Tim May led every lap of the Super Senior final, leading Mike Yogerst, Roger Johnson and Ken Hall home. In Vintage racing, the Classics final was a barnburner, with four official lead changes. John Lovas put his Harley Sprint at the front off the start, but soon faded to fourth behind Bill Berger’s

BSA, Terry Vestal’s H-D, and George Patrick’s Ducati. Patrick had a poor start, finishing lap one in sixth, but he charged through the pack one rider at a time and grabbed the win on the final lap over Lovas and William Ferguson’s H-D. The Vintage final had Danny Murre lead the first two laps over Robert Reese and Terry Vestal. Vestal took over the lead on lap three, but Murre fought valiantly to unseat Vestal – he nearly unseated himself several times in the process – but at the end the finish order read VestalMurre-Reese. Morgen Mischler claimed the 450cc Pro final win over Jake Cunningham and Brock Schwarzenbacher. Schwarzenbacher returned to claim the Open Pro victory after passing early leader Kyle Meiers on lap two and stretching his lead to the finish. Mischler, Meiers, and Kyle Weise rounded out the top four.

D23 Quad Mx Season Closes Thomas, which was an exact flip from last season when Thomas took the championship over Lowry. Tanner Carlson took third overall for the season ahead of Logan Carlson and Tanner Kasper. This is a talented group of kids, who give it their all every moto and keep the fans on their toes. These boys are great friends on and off the track and have good clean, fun motos! Neil Larsen chases Cody Anderson in Open A

he District 23 ATV Motocross points paying season wrapped up at MotoCity Raceway in Staples, MN, with some close points battles that came down to the wire. 90-125 Semi Stock has been a class to watch all season as the riderss had given it their all and gave the fans some great racing to watch! Lined up were Austin Lowry , Montray Thomas, Logan Carlson, and Tanner Carlson. Tanner Kasper wasn’t able to race due to mechanical issues. The pack came off the gate in moto one with the points leader Austin Lowry leading the pack and setting a fast pace. Right behind was Thomas, pushing with all he had before he spun out and got passed by Carlson. Thomas recovered or the pass back into second place as Lowry took the win. Moto two started with Thomas getting the holeshot and never looking back. The battle for the lead was heated through all five laps with Lowry hot on Thomas, leaving no room for error. Carlson held a strong third place the whole moto, waiting for an error by either rider out front. Thomas held on with a nearly flawless moto to take moto win and a first overall on the day! The season in the 90-125 Semi Stock class went to Lowry, taking the District 23 championship by only three points over 24

CYCLE USA, August 2015

In Open A class they started moto one with six riders on the gate. Mike Barnhart on #119, Cody Anderson on #871, Neil Larson on #23X, Jaden Katzenmeyer on the #144, Nick Garbe on the #561, and Jon Stumpf on the #124. In Open A , coming off the gate in moto one Mike Barnhart took the outside and came out of the first corner’s cloud of dust in the lead, setting a screaming pace. Cody Anderson and Neil Larson battled for second, keeping the fans on their toes with sev-

eral in air attempts by Larson to make a pass. Anderson held on and did a good job for his second place finish. The battle for fourth and between Nick Garbe and Jon Stumpf was also a great one to watch as it was tire to tire most of the moto, with Stumpf victorious at the end. Moto two started with Larson taking the holeshot, Barnhart, Stumpf and Anderson were in hot pursuit. Barnhart moved in on Larson and made a pass on lap one to take the lead, which he held for the remainder of the moto. Anderson began working his way to the front, first passing Stumpf and then getting within striking distance of Larson. By lap four Barnhart had a comfortable lead over Anderson, after he worked his way to second, and they finished in that order. The Open A class in District 23 was full of fast racing this season that kept the fans on edge every race. Anderson and Barnhart battled all season with the Championship coming down to the final race. With Barnhart’s overall at Staples he took the championship by a few points over Anderson! Both of these riders rode hard each time they attend an event and can be seen offering assistance and advice to fellow racers, and truly are AWESOME role models and a huge inspiration to the youth riders! District 23 had seen declining Quad entries over the past few seasons, so the leadership team and members made some adjustments for the 2015 season! Although the season ended early, and the riders had

fewer class choices, it added several new tracks/ promoters to the schedule and the combination worked‌ the Quad entries are

on the rise!! They had full gates for many races which the district hadn’t seen in some time!! Expect more of the same in 2016!

Amongst the changes were some additions to the youth classes, adding Rec. 50 and Rec. 90 (Quad) classes. The 50 Rec class had good numbers all season having five to six machines consistently on the gate. After some great battles the District 23 Championship went to Ashlin Lowry, leading Davin Ohlgren, Cole Johnson and Keighley Bruun. The Rec. 90 class had some great battles this season as well. Ivan Kasper had a great season and took the District 23 Championship, leading Tytrell Thomas and Mason Brent. Mid-Summer Fest at Sunset Walnut, Illinois - July 12 By Josh Rud, More photos at www.ShiftOnePhoto.com

J

uly twelfth kicked off the Mid-Summer MX Fest out at Sunset Ridge MX for a great day of racing! With D17 Bonus points, a huge A class purse thanks in part to Southeast Sales, dealer bucks in other classes and more, the park was packed with riders ready to get racing. The weather cancelled about every race in June which had riders itching to ride. The heat was a big issue this weekend with some major humidity making things a little uncomfortable out there, but everyone adjusted, and put on a great show! The thirty-two rider Open C class hit the track with Jimmy Epifanio taking the win in the first moto followed by Brock Shelton and Michigan’s Raymond Thrasher filling out the top three. The second moto came out in the middle of the afternoon heat. The number five of Derek Brueggert got out front for an early lead with Thrasher and Epifanio following close as the pack spread out over the first jumps. Thrasher moved into the lead coming down Mount Walnut with Epifanio putting the pressure on. Coming into the rollers

Zack Tatar won both Schoolboy motos.

26

CYCLE USA, August 2015

Travis Sewell swept both motos of the Open A class.

Brueggert went down moving Epifanio into second and Colorado’s James Quinn on his Yamaha into third. Epifanio was riding hard to make up for getting pinched in the start and finally made his pass on the back of the track to take over the lead. Then Thrasher had the unfortunate luck and went down, dropping a couple positions. Quinn up to second and Joey Fechter into third on his Kawasaki. As the laps wore down the pack started to spread out considerably with Epifanio eventually taking the win and overall for the day. Second overall went to Quinn crossing in second after a fourth place finish in moto one. With Brock Shelton not making it out for moto two and Thrasher’s bad luck(3-7), Matthew Speers took third overall with a sixth and a fourth for the day. The big race of the day was the A class, running ten laps on the long, and very well prepped track. In Open A’s first moto Indiana’s Travis Sewell took the win on his

Woodstock backed KTM followed by Southeast Sales rider Kody Kamm and Ozzy Barbaree out of Arkansas. The second moto got under way with Sewell grabbing the holeshot and just checking out on everyone. Wisconsin’s Ross Martin made a rare appearance, and was in second, flying under the radar today on a Kawasaki with no name on his back, I almost didn’t know who it was. Right behind him was his fellow Snocross racer Kody Kamm out of Wisconsin as well. Coming through the rollers Kamm leaned it back to get by Martin and take over second as Sewell was out front on his KTM, putting quite a few seconds between himself and the rest of the pack. Around the half way mark things were spreading out as Branden Scharer out of California was putting the pressure on Martin. He was able to get around him coming through the sweeper on the way to the finish line. Things were pretty calm the rest of the race as Sewell put it across the line taking the overall going 1-1. Kody Kamm took second overall with two second place finishes and Ross Martin grabbed third overall (4-4). Things were also exciting today in Schoolboy. In the first moto Zach Tatar took the win followed by Ben Ibianskas and Chase Boykin. The second moto got underway late in the day as they came off

the line with Tatar putting his Yamaha out front once again. Boykin was right behind him with Tyler Evensen (4th in moto one) holding down third. Coming into the back of the track Ibianskas was putting the pressure on and made it up to third while his bike was smoking quite a bit. He was looking for a way around Boykin coming into the third lap as his bike was filling the sky with smoke, and losing power. Evensen took back third and started chipping away at Boykin with only two laps left to make anything happen. On the last lap Evensen grabbed an inside line heading into the straight and was able to take over second. This whole time Tatar was making his way around without much contest and took the win and the overall for the day. Evensen ended up with second overall with a fourth place finish in the first moto and Boykin was a solid third overall with his two third place finishes. Ibianskas limped his bike in for fifth, and fourth overall. 65Jr was a big gate drop with fourteen riders buzzing out on the track. In the first moto Krystian Janik took the win with Ian Murphy in second and Mark Fineis third. In the second moto Janik put his Cobra out front, getting a big jump on the pack. Slid-

ing into second around the first turn was Murphy followed by Jackson Herra. The group was going back and forth with Fineis and Herra having the biggest battle out there. Swapping positions several times on the last lap, Fineis was able to make it stick at the end for third. They

came across the checkers in the same order as moto one. The day ended with Janik taking the overall with Murphy and Fineis rounding out the top three on their KTM’s. Ayden Price made the trip down from Fall River, WI to go 4-7 for fifth overall behind Herra (5-4)

Jimmy Epifanio had a big day, topping all four motos in 250 and Open C.

Aggressive competition between Quad A racers Jordan Schwarm and Tyler Martin in their heat race, gave the audience an eyeful as they tangled coming out of turn one, ending in Martin driving away, Schwarm walking. Chuck Calvert went on to win the heat, as well as later in the main. Parker Lange from Campbellsport had a good night, cruising to two first place finishes on his

Honda. In the Open class Lange took the heat, beating out Robert Treinen and Blake Berry. In the main, Parker blasted out in front leaving Michael Van Langen and Berry to battle it out for second and third. Lange’s other victory of the evening came in the 505 class. Again dominating both the heat and main races. The Vets class had Jim Kirschbaum (KTM) victorious in both the heat and the main, with Patrick Stemper giving him serious challenges in the main. Stemper made gallant tries in almost every turn to get up to Kirschbaum, who would get the distance back in the straights of the track.

Great Day at Arkansaw MX Arkansaw, Wisconsin - June 21 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner

une in Wisconsin means summertime, nice weather, vacations, campfires, and motocross. The third weekend in June had us traveling to the western part of the state to the Arkansaw Cycle Park in Arkansaw, WI. We set up camp Friday night with expectations of a ride day on Saturday and District 16 points racing on Sunday. A steady rain Friday night gave the facility a nice soaking for the open ride, but sunny skies all day Saturday and Sunday would set the track up for great racing on Sunday. I have to say, if you are one of those riders watching the radar on Thursday and thinking oh, looks like rain, let’s go to the beach, well; do not underestimate Jason and Jessica and the Arkansaw crew as they did a fantastic job getting the track into mint condition for Sunday. Before I get to the race action on Sunday, I have to tell you I learned something new from my good friends Eddie and Kathy Rankin. Did you know you could boil an omelet? I didn’t either, but let me tell you, I was intrigued and thought of doing it at the racetrack in a turkey fryer had me elbow deep mixing eggs and inKevin Gollubske on the gas Mini Open.

gredients helping with a line waiting half way across the pits. After a thirty minute process, it was worth the wait. Nothing like farm fresh eggs, with onion, pepper, ham, mushrooms, salt pepper and cheese with a hint of salsa to start the day off right. Once we got to the racing on Sunday, it was the Peewee classes taking to the freshly groomed track. Kyler Gollubske topped 50Sr. Logan Kresal was our overall winner in 50Jr with Brady Kirckner and Lane Rhyme were trading moto positions for second and third place. Hunter Kirchner, Kobe Miller and Beau Noaelli were all battling away behind them also all swapping moto positions. One of the next classes I watched was Women’s. Sierra Heindl made the switch this year from a 250F to 125cc two stroke, and the bike and Sierra seem to get along just fine as she ripped the holeshot in moto one. Followed by Leea Niesen and Kendra Randrup, these three battled out front with another trio going at it behind them with Angel Ennis, Tanya Kallenbach and Kaila Forstner. On lap two, both Randrup and Niesen went down moving Ennis into second place. Randrup picked herself up before Niesen and both were up and running again. As they got to the checkers, it was Heindl followed by Randrup, Niesen, Ennis and Kallenbach for the top five. In moto two, Heindl pulled the holeshot with Randrup and Niesen in tow. Niesen got around Randrup and also made the pass on Heindl in the

second lap. Randrup did all she could to try and close the gap on the Niesen but ran out of time. Niesen took the checkers and the overall with her 3-1 scores tying Randrup’s 2-2 but beating her with a better second moto finish. Open C was dominated by the #510 of Logan Telfer who pulled great starts and ran away with both moto wins and the overall. In moto one, Telfer held a slight edge over the Cale Ninneman and Michael Kingstad. On lap two, Telfer got a little sideways off the finish line jump and Ninneman reeled in the leader. On the last lap, Telfer smoothed out his riding and started to pull away but the race was on for second as Kingstad really wanted to nudge Ninneman, and he finally got him before the checkers taking the second spot away. Jonathan Gustum and Chris Groenier rounded out the top five. Telfer was out front in moto two, this time with Kingstad running second and Ninneman giving chase. Gustum had minor issues on the first lap and found himself playing catch up all moto. Groenier and Ry Baumann had some exciting moments as well. At the end of lap two Ninneman went down in the finish line corner trying to make a pass on second, and lost a couple spots to Baumann and Daniel Hutman. As the moto wound down, Ninneman got back around Hutman. At the checkers, Telfer had the win and the overall ahead of Kingstad and Groenier who rounded out the top three. Baumann held off Ninneman, but Ninneman’s 3-5 would best Baumann’s 6-4.

#126 Gavin Burch and Daniel Hutman battled in multiple classes all day.

125JR was the last moto of the round and it was Max Early pulling the holeshot in moto one, followed closely by some fast company. Seth Doeberlein was on his YZ125 just ahead of Devin Blume, Gavin Burch and Tristin Woolf. Early and Doeberlein started to gap the field and put on a good race out front. Blume was running a steady third for much of the race, but you could throw a blanket over the next group for the remainder of the moto as Burch, Woolf and Kendra Randrup pushed each other. At the checkers Early held on to the win over Doeberlein with Blume rounding out the top three. In moto two, Doeberlein pulled the holeshot with Early hot on his heels. Blume was third with Baumann and Randrup rounding out the top five. Doeberlein was cruising out front for the first half of the race and looked like he might be able to pull off an overall when out of the blue; he went down and couldn’t refire the bike, handing the lead and the overall to Early. Blume took over the second spot ahead of Baumann. Woolf made his way into fourth, passing Burch and Randrup. On the last lap, Burch launched his bike over the large infield plateau and made the pass back on Woolf, but Woolf was not going to be denied and in the final corner, choose a great inside line and repassed him for the position and the bronze medal overall behind Early and Blume. As we rolled out of the facility, I was already dreaming about my next trip to this great place, and whether I should bring my maple syrup to put on my omelet.

D16 MX Returns to Hill Point Hill Point, Wisconsin June 27/28 By Dave Hollub

D

riving out to Sugar Maple MX Saturday morning all I could think was the weather was perfect for some great moto. As I drove over the hill and saw the grounds I knew it was going to be a great day for moto by how full the pits were. Once sign up closed and entries were tallied Jason Erdmann told me that the over 270 riders was the biggest turnout in the time Sugar Maple has been open (there were another 225 on Sunday). Rider numbers this high means lots of lines will develop making for exciting racing in all classes. Answering requests from riders Erdmann also added 2 new classes today. Beginner for anyone that has never raced but wants to come out and turn a few laps to see if it is for them and Ironman which was open to any class who thought they had enough in them to go 20 minutes plus 2 laps at the end of the day on a very rough track. The first gate drop of the day went to the twenty-four riders in 250C. Hunter Schueller jumped out front and ended up leading the entire moto. Austin Yager held on in second ahead of the battle between Riley Rew, Zachary Scheiber, Trever Dee-

don, and Dalton Pergrande. Yager opened a gap on third place rider Scheiber by the third lap. Schueller repeated again in moto two as he grabbed the holeshot and checked out. Michael Kingstad started the moto out in second but lost his position to both Deedon and Rew before they hit jump three. Yager made a hard charge on Rew for third, giving Deedon a chance to open up some breathing room. Just when it looked like Yager was setting up a pass he went down in the rollers section causing him a moto two DNF. Schueller’s perfect 1/1 day gave him the overall while Rew (4/3) was second ahead of Devin Blume (6/5). Dustin Sikorski grabbed the holeshot in 250B with Brady Bill and Jacob Jesko, bar to bar fighting for second. By the end of lap one Bill had slipped around Sikorski. Jesko had fallen back into the middle of the pack but was soon charging through in pursuit of the leaders. Colton Bentz was running third with Nick Randrup right behind. Randrup went down in the rollers leaving Jesko a chance to move into fourth. Jesko charged past Bentz on lap four and then got by Sikorski just before the scoring area. Jesko couldn’t close the gap with Bill, and settled into second while Bentz made a last lap pass around Sikorski to finish third.

Jay Norman (#260) and Paul Geibl battled both +40 motos.

Moto two, Jesko took the holeshot ahead of Bill and they stayed out front all moto. Sikorski started the moto in third but went down, dropping back to seventh place. Sikorski put his head down and pushed hard picking off a rider or two each lap to finally slip back into third with Eric Anderson right on his rear fender. Jesko (2/1) took the overall taking advantage of motomath to beat out Bill (1/2). Kirsten Raemisch grabbed the holeshot in Women moto 1 and immediately began distancing herself from the rest of the field including Sierra Heindl, Sarah Whitmore, and then Kendra Randrup. Whitmore found a spot to get past Heindl midway through lap two and then Randrup slipped past Heindl on lap three to set the final order. Raemisch again checked out on the first lap to take the win in moto two. Whitmore and Heindl battled for second early before Whitmore had secured the position in the second lap. Randrup got around Heindl on the next lap and held on to the finish. When Senior +40 hit the Daytona corner on their first lap James Coons was out front with David Ebben and Matt Stratton close behind. Stratton was on the moved to the front, now being pushed by Doug Forstner.

Coons hold on second did not last long as he went down in the rollers on the next lap. Forstner was able to cruise to a second with Troy Blakey in third. Forstner was out front at the moto two holeshot but before the lap was over Coons had taken over the lead. Forstner settled for another second place moto finish. Tony Kalies had his hands full holding off pressure from Stratton until lap three in the road section Stratton saw an opening and slipped past. Forstner was able to turn a consistent 2/2 day into the overall while Stratton’s 1/3 was good for second ahead of Coons 7/1 third. After winning 250B, Jacob Jesko started 125Jr following Max Earley through the holeshot in moto one. Jesko passed Earley before they hit Brothers Dakin Coons (#611) and the Daytona corner and then Zach Coons battling in Open A.

CYCLE USA, August 2015

At the start of moto two Jesko came out in front with Doeberlein second and Dalton Pergrande in third. Earley made his move he past Devin Fell but got caught up when Pergrande went down. Earley wasn’t able to hold third as Fell went outside and avoided the downed bike. Bailey Otis took advantage of Earley being slowed and moved into fourth then made a pass on Fell in the second valley. Earley was able to make a push and got around Fell before the checkers came out to finish fourth. Jesko (1/1) got his second overall of the day with Doeberlein (3/2) finishing second. Jesko, after he wrapped up his second overall “250B was really fun and in the beginning was a good battle with Brady Bill. In 125Jr., I love that bike, it is so much fun to ride I just love it. Perfect start to day at LTM

Casey, Illinois - June 28 By James Pinckard

L

incoln Trail Motosports hosted round five of the Fly Showdown series on the Classic track. The Classic track has hosted races since 1973 and still, to this day, when the track runs it draws riders from all over District 17 as well as other states. In fact riders from six states made the trip to battle on this historic track. The LTM crew did a great job having it ready to race after a week of rain. After a great ride day Saturday, it was a crazy fun Saturday night with LTM hosting the Doug Trombi benefit. Doug is a series rider who got hurt at an earlier round and the medical costs have been rough. Motocross is a family and all money raised by the benefit went to Doug’s family. The benefit included Pit-Bike racing that covered all ages and different bike size classes as well. They had food, auctions things for sale… it was great! On Sunday everyone got up and going with perfect weather and great track conditions for the first motos. The crew went back to work on the track after the first set of motos and the track was, dare I say, perfect! The riders were called to the line for the second set of motos but as soon as the first moto left the line a dark cloud approached the track. By the second race the rain started to fall and then the skies opened up turning that perfect track into a mud pit! Guess getting one set of good motos is better than not. Let’s hope when the Classic track has its next event, riders will get a full chance to enjoy some true Illinois motocross history. 40 CYCLE USA, August 2015

had started and the track by this time was a mess. Folsom had his Yamaha slipping through the mud the fastest taking second. Third overall went to Honda rider Aidan Glasgow with his third place in the second moto. The next class Kobusch got into was Schoolboy 1. If Kobusch is the National speed rider I guess you would call Jason Gepford the hard luck kid. The Halls Cycles rider Gepford has had more than his share of bad luck with injuries and illness when not hurt. Gepford is again making a comeback and in the first moto found himself out front and cranking. Kobusch wasn’t having the best moto but was on his way to the front at a fast pace and on the last lap was in touch with Gepford. Coming over the table top and into the last corner it looked like it was going to +30B class battle between #84 be close when then both went down!!! Aaron Carter and Josh Brooks. Crap… now what? KTM rider Preston Leaf looks to be head of his class because in the first moto he took the win. Mason Byrnes took second with Kawasaki rider Ethan Daugherty third. With the rain and mud everyone knew the conditions would mix things up. Everyone but Leaf because he took his spot at the top of the box again with a win in the moto and overall. Second went to KTM rider Jeremy Frailey who seemed to enjoy the mud, and took second overall. Kawasaki rider Landon Lankutis took third for the moto and overall. 65Sr had a double moto winner of its own. KTM rider Clayton Anderson won both motos and the overall. KTM rider Blade Branon finished second both motos ahead of Dillon Welsh. Anderson wasn’t done though as he topped 65 Open next. The Vintage class had Yamaha rider Sam Sappington taking the first moto win Clayton Anderson was the big with Suzuki rider Dustin Biggs second winner in 65Sr and 65 Open. and Michael Kistler third. In the second

moto Biggs was the Big Dog and took the moto win and overall for the day. Kistler took second in the moto and second overall with Austin Hebenstreit third for the moto and overall. The 250C class had twenty-eight riders and when the gate dropped for the first moto the Kawasaki of Evan Faucett found his normal spot out front to eventually take the win. Yamaha rider Caleb Hetzler finished second with Shaun Martin third. With this many riders in the class, when the second moto came around and it was raining and the track was all mud, you just knew there would be excitement. Donny Schmit Memorial MX

Justin Evans grabs a start in 250C.

Millville, Minnesota - July 17, 19 By Rolfe Otterness

S

pring Creek Motocross Park once again ran the traditional Donny Schmit Memorial amateur motocross in conjunction with their annual Pro National. Donny was one of the most successful riders to come from AMA District 23 motocross as he went from local hero to national amateur champ to multi-time World motocross champion. Now, with Minnesotans leading both national pro championships, it is an inspiration to amateur riders to compete on one of the tracks that cultivated speed and endurance in Donny and others over the years. The Donny Schmit Memorial was held on Friday before the Pro race and on Sunday the opportunity was to master the Pro Track Challenge, with (some of) Mount Martin thrown into the track for an extraordinary obstacle. This year featured some excellent competition with local rider Henry Miller rocketing to wins in the A classes, Gage Steberg and Jayden Clough mixing it up on the minis and B class standouts like Austin Forkner and Chase Sexton battling in maybe an early preview of Loretta Lynn’s. Thursday’s practice was cut short due to incessant light rain and by the time the rain stopped, the track was in quite a waterlogged condition. A lot of Friday-morning bulldozer work was necessary to salvage the day’s racing and although the crew did quite a job, the track was still difficult to navigate for the first set of motos. Deep ruts and slick conditions had many riders 42

sampling the soil multiple times. A large rider turnout of near 800 entries meant lots of action throughout the day and by the second set of motos the track was starting to come around. Clay Olson navigated a soggy start straight to snare the holeshot money provided by Linders Specialty Co. when the Open A class took flight. Henry Miller and Alex Linders quickly got by Olson before the end of lap one. Miller reeled in the slack on his throttle cable and began to edge away from Linders while Derek Hullett moved up to challenge Linders for third. With the emergence of the white flag, Miller’s lead had ballooned to about 25 sec-

onds and Hullet and Bryce Bernloehr had dropped Linders back to fourth. Miller brought his bike in for the win as Bernloehr put on a last lap charge to take second from Hullet. Logan Swanson and Colorado’s Tyler Valentine filled out the top five. Hullet roosted out the hole in moto two only to see Miller charge past in short order. Californian Reid Snyder and Jordan Harnish moved up to second and third when Hullet dropped way back after a mishap. Miller was safe in first for the duration and took a solid win over Snyder. Micheal Riehm grabbed fourth on the last lap with Swanson holding on for fifth over Bernloehr. Vet C featured Levi Haught out accelerating the field to lead through turn one, but Chris Elson wrestled the lead from him to lead lap one. Mike Miller zapped both Haugth and then Elson to take over the lead on lap two and began to build a gap. Elson held third briefly before a mishap, resulting in a damaged radiator and a DNF. Haught regained second and held on to take the win. Dan Nedeau, Marvin Penner and Robbie Rowden rounded out the top five. Miller ran strong in moto two to take another win with a good gap at the flag over second place Haught. Nedeau, Paul Haack

and Jame Cheek ran 3, 4 and 5 across the finish line this time out. The finishers were from Minnesota, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas and Nebraska in that order, bringing into focus the desire of riders to tackle the national track on amateur day. Nick Schnagl romped to a win in the first moto of the 14-24B class with Sam Wise in valiant pursuit all the way to the flag. Schnagl was running strong though and Schnagl was even jumping the camelback (Chadapult) in the very tricky conditions, and deserved the win. Chase Becker ran third most of the way but lost that to Mateo Johnson on the last lap. Jacob Wilke trailed Becker across the line for fifth. The same cast of characters ran up front in moto two with Schnagl very solid again for the win over Wise. Johnson Wilke and Becker filled out the top five order. Pro Track Challenge (Sunday) Gregg Albertson, brother of well-known professional rider Jimmy Albertson, brought a degree of the “brush with fame” theme to the Vet B class in Sunday’s race. With the riders running about half way up Mount Martin, Albertson showed he was up to the challenge as he ran off with the win by a considerable margin. Kevin Kruger rallied for a 3-2 score to take second overall ahead of Joe Jenniges with his 2-6 moto finishes. Maverick Engstrom charged off the start to lead the 125 Two Stroke class in moto one. Engstrom was really cookin’ and began to run off from Austin Nelson who had settled into second place over Chad Boss and Jordan Braaten. By the end of the race Engstrom had about a 13 second gap over Nelson, who in turn had a big edge over Boss, Todd Miller and Gavin Janovsky. Moto two again saw Engstrom jump into the early lead with Nelson in pursuit. This time though, Nelson found a little extra and stayed much closer to provide a challenge to Engstrom for most of the moto. Boss ran third most of the way, but Miller and Janovsky got him shortly before the checkered waved to snare second and third. Boss ended up with fifth behind Miller. Supermini featured Gage Fisher out front in a starring role with support from Josh Boaz keeping him honest all the way in moto one. Fisher was too consistent for Boaz to make any real pass attempt, although he wasn’t far back for the duration. Tayler Grall ran strong to hold off Izaih Clark for the majority of the moto but Clark persistence pain off on the white flag lap for third. DJ Gritzmacher ended up with fifth. Grall was fired up for moto two and 44

pulled off a holeshot but Fisher and Boaz were just too much and they delegated him to third in short order. Grall again had to deal with Clark and they battled again with Clark getting the payoff for third after a good scrap. Max Earley brought his finish up from sixth to fifth, just a bit behind Clark and Grall. Motocross may bring the opportunity of big money and fame, but former and current District 23 ARMCA professionals remember their roots. Over the off-season District 23 Membership Director Angela John worked diligently to develop and get on-line the District 23 apparel store at www.ARMCA.org In an effort to say "thank you" to the

local riders who have excelled at the professional level, John prepared ARMCA sweatshirts for Ryan Dungey, Alex Martin, and Jeremy Martin for their return visit for the Spring Creek Pro National Motocross. The Amateur Riders Motorcycle Association (ARMCA) was founded in 1969 as an organization dedicated to promoting motorcycling activities in the state of Minnesota. ARMCA sanctions competitions as AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) District 23, having become a chartered AMA organization in 1974. District 23 Chairman Mike Quinn, Rider Recognition Chairman Owen Riess, and Membership Director Angela John had the opportunity to talk with the riders who discussed and emphasized the importance of a strong and organized local racing community, and the value of the family oriented environment.

All Miller at Tigerton ProAm

Seeing full gates... is always a good thing!

Tigerton, Wisconsin - July 12 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner

H

istorically, Red Bud MX racing usually goes with the 4th of July weekend. This year Millville’s national was two weeks after. What to do in the weekend between the two pro races? The answer was to hold an AMA double header Pro-am race with another local track. The thought of having two pro-am races back to back came to fruition and thus “The Tweener” weekend evolved with the Saturday race at Crystal Falls, MI and the Sunday Pro Am hosted by Fantasy Moto in Tigerton, WI. Crystal Falls Raceway provided excellent racing and almost all of the racers were planning the trip then to Tigerton race Saturday night. As we discussed plans in the pits about the best route from the U.P. down to the track for Sunday, the polls showed multiple ways to get there, but who had the

46

CYCLE USA, August 2015

best route? As my race team packed up, I felt a sense of a new type of racing in the pits similar to the famous Cannonball Run race, which pits cars against each other in a race across the country. As we made time on the smooth highway we choose heading west first then a south route, I almost didn’t want to stop to eat or take bathroom breaks, however, as we made our way south, I had this peaceful feeling of driving through the north woods to stop and enjoy a minute or two. We were able to include nature stops, race fuel pit stop, supper and even took a couple minutes to have a few selfies with a local deer farm that we passed on the way. We pulled into the campground area with still enough daylight to set up and get things ready for the action on Sunday. Funny how a promoter can put his heart and soul into an event, and worry just about everything with hopes of making a successful event for everyone and not losing a buck. With the rush of racers all pulling in at dusk, it was looking like both Minnesota’s Henry tracks would have Miller cleaned up in a good turnout, the ProAm classes. making the Tweener a success. Twenty 250A riders lined up for moto one and I had a hard time focusing on just one rider, the whole moto as myself and all the fans were treated to 20 minutes plus two laps per moto of racing. Battles were happening

everywhere and with the fastest riders on the track there was plenty of excitement. If you are from WI, most people know Nate Laporte, a local favorite and of course new comer to A class Hunter Sayles, also from nearby Merrill, WI. As most of the fence line cheered the two local riders on, it was Minnesota’s Henry Miller who stole the show. Miller came through the pack and with a lap to go, hunted down Laporte for the moto victory. Sayles was running up front with Laporte ended up with bike issues, forcing him to the sidelines for the day. Sportland2’s Justin Wolf from Franklin, WI scored a solid third just ahead of Bailey Haefner and Zach Coons. In moto two, Laporte was up front and running strong. This time a pair of Illinois boys were running in the top five, as Austin Das and Jacob Wever were battling for top five supremacy. But the boys from WI and IL were soon to be disappointed as Miller, the MN rider again found his way to the front for a perfect 1-1 score and overall beating out Laporte. Wolf stayed consistent with a 3-4 and rounded out the A class podium. Haefner was fourth overall ahead of Wever. Most tracks are usually in a hurry to move things along on race day, but with this event now home to “locals” Sarah Whitmore and Phil Smage, intermission got a whole new meaning as Smage and crew put on half time show involving, stunts, rock climbing the finish line area, as well as a tandem synchronized backflips from Phil and Troy Smalls. Speaking of Whitmore, pretty sure it was her first time racing at her new “home” track and her 1-1 scores besting the always fast Amanda Belonga and D16 favorite Kendra Randrup. Pretty sure by the time the next race at the facility

comes around, Phil and Sarah will probably have a secret trail already mapped out from their house to the facility. Sierra Heindl and Bryanne Wolf rounded out the top five in the very large and competitive Women’s class. A pair of Steven Point, WI natives were on the charge in the Open C class. Ben kurtzweill and Chris Check were on the gas and terrorizing the top five both motos. In moto one, it was Trevor Deedon who was giving Connor Anderson a run for his money. Riley Rew was on the heels of Check with kurtzweill rounding out the top five. At the checkers it was Anderson, Deedon, and Check for the top three. In moto two, Michael Fiorentino with a good start was running top five, chasing kurtzweill and Bryce Thomas. Check and Anderson were running one and two. At the finish Anderson was spot on going 1-1 and Check went 3-2 for second. Thomas’s 6-3 scored him the bronze just ahead of kurtzweill and Rew. 125Jr class had track owner’s son Carter Biese out front in moto one with a runaway win, beating out Jonah Dowd and Bailey Otis. Dustin Laplant and Ezra Graumann were battling hard just to stay inside the top five with Kendra Randrup giving them all they could handle. Ry Baumann and Teegan Erickson were also in the mix throughout the moto. Second moto, Biese was out with engine troubles leaving the door wide open. Dowd took advantage and grabbed the holeshot ahead of the class with Otis and Laplant giving chase. As the moto ran down, Laplant ended up in the second spot ahead of Otis. Randrup and Graumann rounded out the top five. Perron Prevails at Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - June 14 By Rolfe Otterness

J

oe Perron came out on top of the A class results as Spring Creek Motocross Park’s Super Series resumed with round five. Perron took control in the 250A class with two solid wins, then backed that performance up with a 2-1 overall for supremacy in a packed Open A class. It was a strong effort and one of his best days since he took the championships in the Super Series a couple of years ago. A few other riders doubled up on wins too. McCrae Hagerty was tough in the 65cc classes, Gavin Janovsky was cookin’ in the 85’s and in the B class Nick Schnagel and Gavin Wilkins took double doses of gold. The usually mint Spring Creek track was somewhat sloppy for practice and the first few motos, but with sunshine improved throughout the day. Temps in the low 80’s and sunshine produced a typical summer moto day. Just a bit of grooming by the crew and the track was primetime. Moto one of the Open A class featured a good gate with twenty-five riders on the line. A fair number of out-of-state entries were on hand, perhaps to feel out the track for the upcoming regional qualifier. Rochester’s Henry Miller was the defending local and knowing the Millville track probably better than anyone else in the class, shot off the line to grab holeshot money from J&B Pallets. Miller was on a mission and began to build a substantial lead. Logan Marzahn and Perron began to dispute second position with Derek Hullett maintaining fourth over Luke Peters. Perron wrangled a pass on Marzahn slightly before the halfway point, and edged away after that but Miller took the checkers with a very solid lead. Perron ended up with a good margin over Marzahn with Hullett maintaining fourth over Brennan Myers. Perron stormed off the line to lead in moto two. Miller didn’t start after crashing heavily in another class and Perron was able to go in for the win with no close challenges. Brad Deprenger avenged his first moto 17th place with a strong second place finish over Nick Jackson and Luke Peters. Myers was consistent and took another fifth which was surprisingly enough for a second overall finish, consistent finishes not common in this class on this day. Gavin Janovsky motored out front to lead the troops as the 85 Mini 9-12 class took up battle positions. Janovsky built up a cushion over Cameron Skaalerud and Walker 48

lap to follow Janovsky and Skaalerud across the finish line. Ryan Anderson snared fourth over Ackfeld as they fille the 4-5 spots in the finish order. Gavin Wilkins is running out front most of the time in Open B, and jumped into the early lead when they hit the track for moto one. The slippery conditions at the time got the best of him and he laid the bike down near the end of lap 1. Wyatt Krampitz and Nick Schnagel along with a couple more riders were quickly by while Wilkins tried to restart his bike. That was the break Schnagel needed and he passed Krampitz on lap two, then went on to snap up the win. Chase Evans took over second in another lap or two while Wilkins was putting in a recovery ride which moved him in for third at the black and white. Krampitz was fourth over Jake Haney. Schnagel picked off the holey in moto two with Wilkins on his tail along with Josh Jensema. Jensema only made it about 7/8 of the way Mason Kasowicz leads Carson O’Connor. through lap one and dumped it hard to drop back into the pack. Evans inherKrampitz, which came in handy when he ited third with Schnagel and Wilkens raging dumped his bike in a low side slide out move. out front. Wilkins got the best of Schnagel in Recovering quickly, he maintained position the whoops, taking over the lead but Schnagel and ran it through for the win. Skaalerud, stayed close enough to make a last lap pass atKrampitz and TJ Ackfeld trailed him in as the tempt as they blasted up Collarbone near the flag terminated the moto. In moto two, end of the moto, only to fall a bit short. With Janovsky took up the lead role again with their battle at full tilt they built a big gap and Skaalerud and Krampitz in tow. Krampitz hit finished about twenty seconds clear of Evans, the dirt on lap two near the bottom of Mount who had a good margin over Haney and Millville, and lost several positions. A good Krampitz. recovery ride saw him regain third on the last

Quads Take on Cambridge

David Gay, happy to be back and part of the action.

Sambridge, Minnesota - May 25 By Samantha Laderer

D

uring a beautiful memorial weekend, the District 23 quads headed to Cambridge for their third race of the season. In the past years, within the state of Minnesota, numbers had been dropping for the sport of Quad Motocross, but this year tracks have seen an rebound of riders returning to the sport. Things may be starting to look up for the struggling sport. At Cambridge we saw eleven riders line up for Open B. One rider to return to race this year was David Gay. While some riders left the sport due to lack or funds or places to ride, Gay has a whole different story for why he was absent. In 2013, while attending MMI in Arizona, Gay was involved in a horrible motorcycle accident. A driver failed to yield to Gay through an intersection. Among the many injuries, he also suffered from nerve damage in his shoulder, it left his whole right arm nearly paralyzed and was only able to flex his wrist. It left David lingering on the thought of whether or not he would ever be able to race again. After many surgeries, Gay is at 80% mobility with his right arm and works on strengthening it every day. This allows for 52

him to ride his motorcycle to work daily and return back to the sport of Quad racing. “I’m no longer out on the race track to win. I’m just thankful that I am alive and healthy enough to race again,” says Gay when asked how he feels to be back on the quad. From all that has happened, it hasn’t stopped Gay from going out and battling for the top position with Alex Dale, Dawson Lugert and Dylan Hutkowski. These four have been going head to head all season. In the first moto Hutkowski took the holeshot and led the whole race leaving everyone to battle behind him. For Dale, he got a bad start but was quick enough to catch back up to second place. On the last lap with Hutkowski in the lead still and Dale to follow both suffered from freak accidents. Hutkowski with only

a half a lap to go to take the checked flag, flipped his quad after hitting a rut and couldn’t get it started. Dale, he snapped his chain. This allowed for Beau Tibbetts to take the win. In the second moto Hutkowski managed to pull the holeshot again but had Tibbetts on his tail. After coming into a corner together, Hutkowski had no option but to take the outside which allowed Tibbetts to pass him to take lead as well as the win. “To have 11 quads on the line compared to four is an adrenaline rush. Not to mention it's a ton of fun to be able to look forward to the next race time after time knowing you are going to actually have competition.” – Dylan Hutkowski Quad class Results: +30: 1.Lynn Sather 2.Tony Ranallo 3.Ben Horgen 4.Jason Graski 5.Ben Hergert 50cc Rec.4-8: 1.Davin Ohgren 2.Keighley Bruun 3.Ashlin Lowry 4.Cole Johnson 50cc Semi Stk 4-8: 1.Brody Srsen 2.Kaydence Hayden 3.Norman Wells 90cc Rec 8-12: 1.Ivan Kasper 2.Tytrell Thomas 90cc Semi Stk 8-13: 1.Austin Lowry 2.Montray Thomas 3.Logan Carlson 4.Tanner Carlson 5.Tanner Kasper Mini Prod 6-13: 1.Vince Callahan 2.Jack Glaser Open A: 1.Cody Anderson 2.Haedyn Mickelson 3.Jonathan Stumpf 4.Matthew Stumpf 5.Jaden Katzenmeyer Open B: 1.Beau Tibbetts 2.Dylan Hutkowski 3.Dawson Lugert 4.Luke Rodunz 5.Chris Bertrand Open C: 1.Jacob Schilling 2.Phil Gullckson 3.Nick Doyen 4.Karter Klingsporn 5.Tyler Barnett Women: 1.Chris Gray 2.Sarah Srsen Yth Open 14-17: 1.Kaitlyn Kuhlman Yth Prod.13-15: 1.Eli Vanzee 2.Riley Brooks 3.Austin Lowry 4.Ethan Aune 5.Michaela Kappos

Great Racing in Portage Portage, Wisconsin - July 22 I-94 Supercross Series

I

t has become an annual expectation for many in the central Wisconsin town of Portage... getting to take in the motocross action as part of the Columbia County Fair. The fair kicks off on a Wednesday evening, and motocross is the center of attention for the spectators. The track is built just for this single evening, and as soon as the last bike crosses the finish line, heavy equipment rolls out and starts tearing it all down. The four hour show is all part of the I94 Supercross Series, put on by the crew from CMJ Raceway, in conjunction with the Lake Wisconsin ATV association. The stadium motocross starts with heat races, setting the gate pick for main events. The program is quick, and geared to provide non-stop action for the Baraboo, WI’s Peyton Poker after winning spectators. There’s a DJ and the 50cc class, and finishing fourth in 65cc crowd interaction, and a nice little buffer that he took to the checkers. bleacher section just for the riders and Trevor Slaght ran in third with Peyton their families... everyone has a good time. Poker on his heels to the finish. The 65cc riders kicked off the main One rider that simply would not be deevents, and out of the first turn leading it nied this evening was Honda mounted was Spencer Hein on his little KTM. Nick Blumer from Monroe, WI. In 14Sticking close early in the race, Warrens, 29, he pulled the holeshot, and left the WI’s Nathan Blaschke was also putting close racing behind. Working up from in fast laps. Hein eventually built up a fourth, Max Scott Zont came up from Illinois to top the Open A class.

54

CYCLE USA, August 2015

Steinhorst made his final pass on Matt Herrington for second late in the race. Herrington had a good race with Jeremy Smith in the final laps, holding on to third. A KTM mounted Hein was out front in the 85cc class as well... but this time, it was the elder sibling, Dalton

Hein showing the fast way around the track. Sean Storkel quickly took over second from Spencer Hein, then paced Dalton, but never got close enough to really threaten him. VRM backed Dalton after the win, “They changed the track from last year, and it’s fun. The jumps are all good. After getting the holeshot, I hit the big triple and then just went away in the lead.” The 250C class had enough riders to require two heats of riders working their way into a twelve rider main event. Max Steinhorst got the all important holeshot on his Yamaha with Austin Yager right on his rear fender, and the race was on. The enthusiastic track announcer Joe Zomchek kept the fans informed as the lead riders were already lapping others at the half way point. Steinhorst held the lead all the way, but by the slimmest of margins, Yager never gave him an inch. Back just a bit, Justin Goodwin, Michael Fiorentino, and Tyler Schubert were fender to fender through every lap as well. Jay’s Cycle Center backed Steinhorst was pumped after the close race. “I was trying as hard as I could, but still making a couple little mistakes and just couldn’t get through the rollers well. He (Yager) gave me a great run, I haven’t been pushed like that in a long time. Getting through the lappers was tough.” Pro-Taper/ MSR rider Yager after his second place finish, “I was behind him and kept trying to make a pass. The last lap we came into the whoops really close, and I took a line where a lapper dropped into so I missed a chance. It was great racing. I love this racing and the style of the jumps and everything.” 250B saw another close battle for the win. Eric Anderson had a little advantage through the whoops, but Jeremy Smith would come right back in the corners.

After a couple lead changes, Anderson took over in the whoops once again, and held it through the final jumps for the win on the last lap. The Open C class battle over the win came right down to the final corner. Austin Yager was out front, but after Chris Check worked up to second, passing Michael Fiorentino, everything was up for grabs. Check clicked off some great laps as he and Yager worked through lappers. Yager may not have even realized Check was so close going into the final lap. While leading into the whoops, Yager checked up a bit to cautiously work through a pair of lappers. Check through caution out the window and dove right into the rider mix. Hitting the last kicker before the finish line corner hard, Check couldn’t hold on in the corner and went down next to Yager. The finish line was at the exit of the corner, and Yager scored the win. Had it been five feet sooner on the track, Check’s valiant effort would have paid off big time. Last race of the evening was reserved for the fastest of them all, the Open A riders in a 200% payout - ten lap dash. Earlier in the heat race, Jason Erdman rode off to the win after Woodstock KTM team members Scott Zont and Eric Utech

Nick Blumer had a great night, winning 14-29 and Open B.

inadvertently took each other out in the first turn. It was a different story in the main, as Zont used his arenacross experience to get out front, and set a blistering pace. Both he and Utech found a new fast way of doubling from one plateau over a second plateau following it, and the two were quick to leave the others behind. Woodstock KTM/ TZR/ Decal Works/ Club 57 backed Zont after taking the win, “It was a blast coming here on a Wednesday evening to race. This is cool, and it is great having so many fans, and seeing them all so into the racing. I loved this and look Open C class winner forward to more of it in Jared Yager. the future.” It was a great night, and it’s good to know the CMJ team will be bringing us more of this racing in late August at the double header in Hustler, WI. If you missed tonight, come join us for the fun August 28/29th. There’s also a D16 Hare Scrambles as part of the weekend, so there will be even that much more going on.
