I can’t believe we are down to only three months of our season left. Motocross has August and September while the other disciplines will go through October with our last event being the Mazeppa Hare Scrambles. I hope all of you have enjoyed the season as much as I have. Although I would like more opportunities to ride, like most years there are family functions and of course my grandkids that take precedence over riding time. I wouldn’t have it any other way. The Pro Motocross is now history, and as always it was a ton of work to put on the show, but again well worth all the effort. I was really happy to read the article in Racer X online entitled “Feeling Minnesota”. The piece recapped all the racers from MN that have been making the Nationals or trying. It was interesting and it was really nice to see the state get some credit for producing so many great racers. We also have the countries top Hillclimb riders and some very good off road racers, as witnessed by the Amateur Athlete of the Year Award the Matt Stavish won in 2015. He won the senior class in the National Enduro Series, and at almost 50 is still a threat in our local Hare Scrambles races. I believe there are many factors that go into the making of so many great racers from our state and district. Announcements, personal stuff, and.... opinion is the great work ethic that the people up here possess. Other factors include strong families and family support, a strong district, facilities that work together to better the sport. All of these things together make for successful programs, and the making of champions. A question I hear quite often is what do I get for my money when I join the district? It is a good question as there are many things that go along with a membership. First and foremost is the keeping of points for all of our competitive disciplines. On top of keeping points we also provide year endawards to those that earn and qualify for them. This includes the trophies and apparel that go the Champions and class winners. We also use some of your membership dues to pay our lobbyist at the state level. This has become one of our more important functions as the anti motorized forces come after our riding areas and our right to ride. We have a very effective lobbyist and have been successful in getting many really detrimental bills killed in committee. It is next to impossible to get a bad law repealed, it is much better to get it killed before it is passed. We have a few promotional activities to push for membership, get the population to know we exist, get us recognized as legitimate and a legal athletic endeavor. It also includes your subscription to Cycle USA which covers three Upper Midwest districts. Of all the district activities, one of the most critical is our government relations. We have managed to keep from losing any motocross facilities for legal reasons. We’ve lost some state riding areas but we are also gaining some new ones. Currently we are working on a riding area in Houston County similar to the Gilbert riding area. Would we like to do more for our members? Absolutely, and the more members we have the more funds we have to work with provide

more. Our membership numbers to date are up a bit over last year. Our recovery is much slower than we would like but then so is the national economic recovery. We’re lucky to have such dedicated members, members that will forego other things so they can race and ride. The board of directors is very aware of the high quality of our competitors and members. Going into the future we are working on getting more consistency in the promotion of our off-road events. This would involve all events using the same scoring system, better trained referees, and more consistent rules enforcement. We’re working to improve all facets of motorcycle riding and racing in the state. Remember that we have a deadline for proposed rules changes, they have to be submitted by the 15th of September. The person proposing the rule must be present at the annual meeting, or appoint a person to represent them. The September meeting will be the last chance for suppliers to bring in samples and prices for our year end awards and apparel. That should catch you up on District 23 business, and as always please send me any questions or issues you would like addressed. See you on the tracks, trails, and roads of Minnesota. Mike District 17 Motocross Championship Event Sunset Ridge is hosting the 2016 AMA District 17 State Championship Motocross on Sept. 11th! If history repeats it's self, it will be one of the best days of racing like it was when they hosted it the first time in 2002.

Excellent set up with a Pro Am on the same day so the purse will be solid as well. This will be the second Championship event after kicking off that process last year with great success. ATV and Motorcycle classes will be run, all on the same day! Anyone can race this event, from other states it doesn’t matter. Racing will have great competition and will be good for all ages. No other points racing will happen on this day, so everyone can come take part in it all. This is a perfect chance to see how you stack up against other riders. The World’s Fastest Mile just got a little faster. The promoters of the Springfield Mile have added online ticketing functionality to the SpringfieldMile.org website, allowing fans to reserve their preferred grandstand seats for the Sunday, Sept. 4, AMA Pro Flat Track event. The Springfield Mile has been widelyacclaimed for close, high-speed racing at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Now, the renowned event has given new and existing fans an easy way to choose their seats in advance. With the new functionality, spectators can click the “buy tickets” option to select the area of the grandstands in

which they would like to sit, and then choose which seats they would like to purchase. As online purchases are made, the site will automatically block out each section of the grandstands that are no longer available to make the selection process for additional fans simple. “We’re excited to be bringing this modern touch to the Springfield Mile,” said Tommra Kiesow, promoter of the event. “We started building this new functionality in October of last year and we are excited to see it finally come together. Sweating with the Oldies at Sunset Ridge’s Vet race Walnut, Illinois - June 25 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

he Racer X Vet Series rolled into Sunset Ridge MX for round one. Riders from twelve states and Canada battled on the incredible track. Sunset Ridge is amazing – wide, fast, rough, big jumps, whoops… everything you would ask for in a track. With all that the track is still safe and fun. It will sure bring out your true fitness level, but the track crew does a great job keeping it prepped perfectly all day. With this event focused on riders eighteen years of age and up, and a class even dedicated to those sixty plus, some rider’s fitness level was better than others. The difference at this event was that the fun level across all classes was HUGE! There were all kinds of stories about groups of friends getting together, planning the trip, and hitting the road. That was the case for a group of buddies from Wisconsin, including Mark Mancini, Allen Brhely, and Tim Dieball. They were racing the +60 class, having been away from racing for many years. “Guys our age now, we were the stud racers back when motocross was first happening in the U.S. Our bikes are more expensive now and we stay in hotels, but this is what we get to do for fun

again.” That’s what Moto is about. It’s great to see these guys, some who never stopped racing, some coming back to racing after a long time away, and some just ride the this Series. Whatever the reason there were a bunch of sweaty old dudes ripping up the track all day. They should all be glad the helmets have changed since most of them started, because those old open face helmets would have left them with mouths full of sand because of all the smiles on the track. The classes are very different at a Vet race from the usual District races, with sixteen age/skill classes and three classes based only on age of the bike. That made

it harder to tell which group was on the track. When asked what class was racing, a spectator said ‘they’re awfully scrub-y and jump-y, so it must be the +18.” The class I most wanted to see was +60. These riders from seven states did not disappoint. District 22 long-time Suzuki rider Rick Munson was ripping, nailing the start and attacking the track. Wisconsin KTM rider Wayne Welzien chased Munson in second until the fourth lap, had some trouble and slipped back to fourth. With Munson out front the rider on the move was Iowa’s KTM rider Paul Chyma. Chyma was fourth the first two laps and had started to figure out the track. He had a little help from District 17 Illinois rider Todd White who was running third, as he had problems dropping well back into the pack, then out of the race. Chyma (now in third) passed Welzien into second where he would finish the moto. Minnesota rider Harold Gooch also had a good ride, working up to third. Welzien finished fourth with Illinois rider Gary Peak fifth.

In the second moto Wisconsin Honda rider Brhely nailed a great start with the pack on his heels. First moto winner Munson was on the charge and by the end of the opening lap had worked his way into second and on the third lap took the lead. He went on to the win and overall. Chyma found his way to second for the moto and overall. Illinois rider Greg Mellinger took third and with his sixth in the first moto gave him third overall. Peak had his two-stroke smoking to fourth in the moto and overall. Fifth overall went to Welzien with a great ride. In the +55 class Munson was back on the gate. When they left the line Wisconsin Kawasaki rider Roy Nafzger was flying, taking the first moto win with Munson second. Illinois Husky rider Ronald Downen finished third with Wisconsin’s Tim Boblin fourth and Illinois’ William Ziesk fifth. Going to the second moto Munson still had a good shot at another overall. When the gate fell so did the chances of another overall for Munson because Nafzger was floating over the sand whoops, taking the moto and overall win. Downen was in second with Munson third. Downen knew he couldn’t let up and he finished second for the moto and overall. Munson finished third. Boblin again finished fourth with Ziesk fifth for the motos and overall. After the race I talked with Munson about his day. “These events are fun. I think about some of the tracks we used to ride and now that the bikes have changed so much I wonder if they would once again be as good as they were then?” When you think of Vet Fest you may think a rider would skip a practice day to save energy for the races. You may think a rider would ride one class to do the best he could, or at most two classes. Someone forgot to tell that to District 17 rider Joe Buskirk. Buskirk rode three classes! When I talked to him he said, “It’s been a challenge today. I do like the track and things are good.” How good were things for Buskirk? In +30A class Illinois rider Bryan White won both motos and the overall. Buskirk finished second both motos and overall. In the +35A Buskirk was on it. He had to be because Josh Pistole was ripping like he was at home, which he was! In the first moto Buskirk took the win with Pistole second. In the second moto Buskirk roosted to the front taking the overall win.

Olson behind him and Josh Virnig in the top five. The Long family also enjoyed the nice three day weekend here at the track. They have three young boys that race. Their oldest, Avery, runs in the 85cc 9-11 class and is consistent with top three finishes regularly. Next is Braden then Brennan, who both run in the 65cc classes. In the first moto of 65cc 7-9, Brennan Long battled his way through the other riders and kept up with the fifth position of Hayden Schwochert-Horner. In the front of the pack his brother Braden was having a heated battled with Christian Berg. Both boys took off the gate bar to bar leaving the rest of the riders behind. Throughout the whole race they went

ood luck finding a better way to celebrate our freedom than racing motocross on a beautiful Sunday during the Fourth of July weekend. Motocity in Staples, Minnesota hosted round eight of the Central Minnesota series as well as round 15 of the District 23 series. Families gathered to celebrate the holiday with a little bit of braap. Among those were Austin Kienast and his dad Mark. They came from Watertown, South Dakota. The Kienast team have been racing D23 since 2012 and didn’t think they would have come this far with racing. After an experimental year in C class, Austin improved and moved up to B for two years, which he said was a huge learning curve but also made him realize that he could potentially go further. Last year he moved into A and kept improving with each ride. Currently, he races 250A, Open A, and 14-24A, which makes for a busy race day. In Open A, Kienast had some good competition with Clay Olson and Riley Kroone. After taking second in the holeshot, Kienast went for a pass on Olson but that line ended up almost taking him off the track causing him to fall back a little. With Olson checking out, 10

Kienast then battled with Kroone for the second position. He stayed ahead nearly the whole race but on the white flag lap Kienast was starting to tire and it showed after he tipped over mid lap allowing for Kroone to take over second. Behind them Neil Ehrenberg and Mick Olson finished out the top five. Second moto; however was a different ball game. Kienast pulled the holeshot. After the first lap, Clay Olson passed Kienast for the lead but that didn’t last long as Olson ran into misfortune and went down in the back section. Kienast took over and stayed there. “I could hear him behind me getting closer each lap and then I looked behind me and he was gone,” said Kienast. Turns out Olson had gone down again nearing the end of the race. Kienast ended up with a second

back and forth. On the last lap with only two corners to go, Braden Long went to the outside to make a final pass attempt on Berg, but went a little high causing him to lose his front tire. He quickly got up and recovered the second position. Caleb Bohlman, who ran quite the race and hit a few extra jumps, including the larger double in the middle to keep his position, finished in the third spot with Simon Briggs in fourth and SchwochertHorner fifth. In the second moto, Braden Long and Berg did it again, and staying tire-to-tire and bar-to-bar the whole race. This time, Long was able to get around Berg and take the win. Brady Karolevitz, who suffered from a bad start and a few misfortunes the first moto, wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t far behind them in third. Karolevitz showed some serious speed this moto on his new bike. Bohlman battled with Karolevitz and

stayed close right to the finish for fourth, good for third overall. Motocross as most of us have come to realize isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just an individual sport, it has a lot to do with the people around you and those who support you. It is a family affair. With families like the Kienasts, Kroones, Longs as well as the Bohlmans and Bergs and so many others, it makes the track a small community. Thanks to the Kadlec family for hosting a great race weekend as well as sharing their Fourth of July weekend with all of the racers and their families. At the end of the day, we may have different last names, but in this sport we are all just one big moto family. Another Great Aztalan MX Lake Mills, Wisconsin - July 10 By Morgan Strauss

or what could have been a scorching, summer day in July, Aztalan Cycle Club got lucky with a beautiful day for the July motocross race. With morning temps in the mid 70’s and a light breeze, it was promising to be a great day of racing. As always, we had a good turnout of riders and plenty of action for the third motocross of the season at Azzie. The second big bike class of the day was NonCurrent, where Nate Telfer was the first one around the corner for the holeshot. As the group made it to the plateau, Telfer was followed by Brian McCanna, Robert Lange and Matthew Wraalstad. By the second lap, Telfer already began to put some time on the rest of the riders. McCanna continued in second, but Wraalstad began to close in and look for an opportunity to move past. Eventually McCanna allowed Wraalstad into second, now followed by Josh Gomski, Matthew Blower and Lange. Telfer continued putting time on the rest of the class until the checkers. In the second moto, Blower was on the throttle for the holeshot in front of Telfer. However, as they reached the back sand section, Telfer already made the move for first, now followed by Lange, Blower and Gomski. Lange continued to hold onto second, as Blower and Gomski battled closely for third. By the mid moto, Blower started putting the pressure on Lange for second. Lange was able to hold him off until the fifth lap, when Blower found the chance to slip past. Telfer with a perfect 1/1 day took the overall, with Gomski (3/3) taking second, and Blower (6/2) third. It was a great day in 250A when Taylor Strauss was on the throttle for the holeshot in moto one. By the time they reached the plateau, Strauss continued his lead, followed by 14

Jason Erdmann, Dale Kathan, Tristin Toney and Dillon Kau. Somewhere before the start of the second lap, Kau allowed Mason Persha to take over the fifth place position, quickly putting pressure on Toney. By the third lap, Strauss held onto a solid lead, with Erdmann and Kathan keeping close tabs on each other in second and third. Persha also closed the gap on Toney and was able to take over fourth setting the final order. In the start of moto two, Erdmann made it around the first corner and into the lead. By the back section Erdmann continued in first, with Kau, Kathan, and Persha shortly behind. With Strauss’ stumble in the start, he would have a challenge ahead of him to work his towards the front. By the second lap, Strauss was able to make the move around Toney and was quickly picking up time Persha. The two battle for half a lap,

until Strauss took the opportunity to move past. Erdmann continued in first, until the fourth lap, when he boggled near the plateau, allowing Kau, Kathan and Strauss to take over the top three spots. Strauss wasn’t stopping his push for first there, and soon made his move around Kathan. As the white flag dropped for the last lap, Strauss made his move around Kau for first. He continued with his hard earned first until the checkers. Strauss (1/1) took the overall, with Kathan (3/3) second, and Kau (5/2) third. Strauss, “The first moto of 250A went great. I pulled the holeshot and led till the end, the second moto didn’t go quite as good right away. I crashed in the first corner and ended up last, but got up and started charging. I made my way back up to first and ended up going 1-1. In Open A I pulled the holeshot and got the win also, but second moto I made a few mis-

takes and went down, so I ended up getting second overall. The track crew did a great job on getting and keeping the track good all day. I would like to thank my parents, Robâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Performance Motorsports, PR2, EVS, FMF, Bell Helmets, Fly Racing, Motorex, Benny Carlson and Ross Braun.â&#x20AC;? It was an exciting day as twenty-two riders hit the track for the start of 250C, where Max Earley stole the holeshot with James Burd, Ian Beal, and Logan Rusk shortly behind. By the second lap, Earley already began to put a small gap on the rest of the group. Burd continued in second, but Rusk managed to move past Beal for the third place spot. Somewhere near the back section in the third lap, Burd stumbled, allowing both Rusk and Beal to move up. Earley continued with his significant lead until the checkers. During the third lap, Beal went down, giving Burd the chance to move back around him for third, leaving Dalton Pergande, and Dillon Riemann to take over fourth and fifth. In the second moto, Earley once again was ready and took the holeshot in front of Rusk. By the second lap, Earley started to put some time on the group, with Rusk holding onto a

strong second, with Beal and Riemann shortly behind. Rusk, Beal and Riemann kept close ties on each other, holding their positions until the last lap. Earley (1/1) walked away with the overall, leaving Rusk (2/2) to take second and Burd (3/5) third. As the gate dropped in 65cc 7-11, Benjamin Blazek was ready on the throttle for the holeshot. When the riders made it to the plateau, Blazek held onto his lead, just in front of Nolan Schweighardt and Riley Busse. Shortly behind, Owen Blakey and Jaden Mckeown kept a close distance on each other for fourth. By the start of the third lap, Blazek continued in first, but Schweighardt began to put the pressure on him. The two battled closely for the rest of the race, as Schweighardt couldn’t find the opportunity to make his move into the lead. Busse finished third ahead of Blakey. It was a change-up in the second moto, when Schweighardt was on the throttle for the holeshot in front of Blazek and Busse. As the group reached the start of the second lap, Blazek was able to close the gap for first, and made his way around Schweighardt for the position. Schweighardt kept it close, but settled for second. Blazek with a perfect 1/1 day took the overall. Schweighardt on the day, “The race went pretty good. Because I didn't get the holeshot in the first moto, I was really trying my hardest to get in front in the second moto. I was excited to race my 65, but even more excited to race my new 85 for the first time. Rob Strauss delivered it to me over the 4th of July and it’s really fast. I would like to thank Rob’s Performance and Schweighardt Concrete for sponsoring me.” In +30B/C, Jim Beckman was the first around the corner for the holeshot. By the start of lap two, Paul Molkentin had already moved his way into first, followed by Daniel Lopez, Tom Wolf and Tom Ferguson. By the third lap, Lopez started putting pressure on Wolf for second, and

eventually found the opportunity to slip past for the position. Molkentin held onto a strong first until the checkers, with Lopez second, Wolf third and Ferguson fourth. In the second moto, Beckman once again was ready and stole the holeshot in front of the rest of the group. He held his lead for half of the first lap, until Tom Wolf found the opportunity to take over first as the group made it over the plateau. Molkentin began closing the gap on Wolf for second, as Lopez and

Ferguson battled shortly behind. By the start of the third lap, Molkentin finally took the chance to slip around Wolf for first. Around this time, Lopez falling back, allowing Ferguson, Glen Korn, and Beckman to take over the following positions. Molkentin and Wolf continued their back and forth battle until the last lap, with Molkentin able to come out on top. Molkentin (1/1) took the overall, with Wolf (3/2) taking second and Ferguson (4/3) third.

Father’s Day at Fox Valley OR Wedron, Illinois - June 19 Photos by Nick Smith

t’s “dry heat” you always hear that from folks around the southeastern part of the country. But for us Midwest riders, the first real 90 degree day with a little breeze took it’s toll on many. Even the young guns that don’t understand the value of “water” two days before and event like this found out real quick! Fathers Day at Fox Valley traditionally has been the clockwise rotation. If dry this allows for a much more traditional HS event with single track and new hills put in. This race was no different, with two completely new sections and many that haven’t be ridden on for a long time. The 65cc Beginner class was the first off the line and they have been a large class this year, with all the kids coming off of 50cc machines. The course was a little over a mile with real wooded trails and a small part of the “kids” track by the parking lot. The hot rod in this class was Riley Roberts, coming from twelfth to third by the end of the 40 minute race. Landon Lee took the win, but you wonder how it would have turned out if Roberts had a better start. Michael Truver filled in the second spot with a solid ride on his KTM! Eli Otterbach won the 200C class.

The Otterbach team of Ken and Eli put a solid race in today in the morning big bike group. Ken, the father at a ripe ole age of fifty and Eli the pup at sixteen made their marks on the day with dad getting the +50A overall and Eli taking the win in 200C, but not catching the ole man as he usually does. Ken Otterbach after the race, “I thought the kid would get me today." In the end the technical course and experience prevailed over the young and energetic Eli. Wally Mika split the pair as the second place finisher in +50A. Many times the overall isn’t looked at in Hare Scramble racing, but it can be fun to see how one stacks up no matter age, class or size of machine. Tim Farrell pushed hard after some time

off racing to finish third in +50A class and Kevin Finefield on his new Hall’s Husqvarna took the fourth place honors. Countryside KTM sponsored AA rider Blake Ryan pulled the holeshot and decided that today he was going to show everyone the fast way around. Ryan has been racing hard all spring and had the endurance that many others didn’t. Trying to muster a challenge was Travis Ward, coming around on the third lap he and Ryan were neck and neck. On the downhill by the road, Ward slid out, his foot kicked out and hit the rear brake assembly, sending pieces of the cover into the rear rotor. This locked up the rear wheel and put an end to his challenge for the lead. Matt Mcdonald, new to the AA class, caught and passed Ward for second as well. As the race wore down, Mcdonald and Ward had a fun time passing back and fort racing to the checkers. Looking at the overall in the afternoon big bike race it was evident there will be solid competition coming for the fast guys now. Four of the top ten riders in this overall were B class competitors. Tanner Whipple finish up fifth overall with Alex Parks seventh, Garrett Ward eighth ahead of and Doug Propper. Some of the A class riders were having

issues this day, in fact there was a large percentage of riders who found out real fast that brake fluid (or the proper type of) is a major player. The Quad class riders lined up on this hot and dry day with one thing in mind, get the holeshot and check out. First time through the barrels it was found out that the logs had just a little to much dirt taken out in front of them as a traffic jam occurred. A quick re-direction at the finish line logs kept things going smoother for the rest of the day. Chris Breitwieser led through the first lap with Chris Barnes and Kyle Ernst right there. As the race unfolded the experience and knowledge of the Fox Valley property helped Breitwieser pull away. Fathers day weekend at Fox Valley has always delivered great racing, this one was no exception. Spring Creek pulls 500+ Millville, Minnesota - June 26 By Rolfe Otterness

en Adamson mastered the B classes at the sixth round of the Spring Creek Super Series, moving blisteringly fast to grab six moto wins and take overalls in the 14-24 , 250 and Open B. Another rider to excel was Josh Boaz, who bested even Adamson’s total as he nabbed eight moto wins enroute to four overall aces, an amazing tally. They were among the quickest of the over five hundred entries for this weekend’s event. The weather was typical early summer with sunny skies and temps in the eighties. The track was somewhat smoother than usual with a lesser amount of water on the track so the usual pro-track character with ruts was swapped for a smoother, more hard-pack like surface. The racing still great with lots of competition on display. The afore-mentioned Adamson swept

through the first turn to lead moto one of the 250B class on his YZF trailed by Dan Benham, and 125cc-two stroke mounted Luke Henpen as they completed lap one. Adamson had the pace and began to pull away while Benham held off Hempen for another lap or so, before Hempen crashed and lost a good number of positions before the halfway point in the race. Travis Muller inherited third then with Gage Fisher pressuring and when Benham had a bit of trouble on the last lap they both got by. Fisher zapped Muller on the white flag lap and was second to Adamson at the checkered while Muller, Benham and Mickey Bender completed the list of the top five. Adamson wrested the holeshot away from Bender as they rounded turn one in the second moto but Benham quickly pushed through into second and kept a bit of pressure on Adamson throughout the first lap, with Tyler Collins and Fisher in

a dispute over third. Benham held on for a secure second with a safe lead over Fisher and Bender while Shane Halverson moved up to steal away fifth from Collins before the white flag and held on to the end. Brandon Johnson ripped off a holeshot to lead the first 14-24C moto and settled into the lead with Aaron Blackstone in pursuit. Johnson pulled out just a bit of a lead and Blackstone reeled him back in again for the second half of the race as the gap held at about 5-6 bike lengths. Johnson maintained it all the way to the checkered. Alex Damlow edged out Nathan Prebe as they took the flag while fifth went to Hunter Meyer. Johnson led early in moto two. halfway point in the moto. Koester slipped by first and then Blackstone finally got him on the last lap and they pulled away slightly before the moto ended. Prebe and Mitchell Prescott topped off the top five group after a good battle for the last two laps. Josh Boaz showed his strength in the 85 Mini 1215 class as he trounced the field with strong 1-1 finish. Boaz looks like a good bed to win the most motos in the Super Series this year if he keeps winning at this pace. Mason Grecula had some good rides and went 2-2 for second overall with Gavin Tilford’s 4-3 score topping Jonah Jevning’s 5-4 motos. Gavin Wilkins looked quick as he ran off with a 1-1 score in Open A. Nick Schnagl and Clay Chapiewski traded second and third amongst themselves between the two motos and Schnagl’s 3-2 wrapped up second overall. Chase Becker’s consistent 5-5 finishes gave him fourth over Philip Maus who topped his first moto 8th place finish with a much better 4th place in the second moto. for granted how much we get as members be it great tracks and how they all operate in a consistent manner. At the gate in the School Boy 2 class the racers were tensed and ready for the first drop. KTM rider Landon Rapp nailed the start with KTM rider Drake Bailey in second. Yamaha mounted Joshua Taylor was in the hunt and on the second lap set up Bailey for a pass and moved into second.

incoln Trail Motorsports hosted round 5 of the Showdown Series. The riders were greeted with a great track with added sawdust, and plenty of heat! But even with the heat the track crew did a great job keeping the Bomber track good with little or no dust. That was hard to do with temperatures in the mid 90’s and almost 250 entries pounding the track. Despite the Spencer Mountcastle going to third in Schoolboy 2. heat, the riders were fired up and race-ready making me believe it’s going to be a great summer of racing! I want to introduce a new District 17 member Spencer Mountcastle. Spencer is from Indiana but signed up to get Cycle USA because his friends get it, but did add he wished there were more District tracks closer to LTM. He said “Maybe some of the Indiana tracks can join being we no longer have a district. I enjoy this track! I now have a 250F and I’m excited to get out there racing. I’m doing two classes the School Boy 2 and 250B for the first time.” As regulars in the district, we often take 26

Out front Rapp had things covered and took the first moto win as Taylor finished second with Bailey third. Spencer Mountcastle finished fourth. In the second moto first moto winner Landon Rapp wasn’t able to make the moto. When the gate dropped and the pack cleared the first turn Bailey had the lead. Taylor had his Yamaha on the pipe and on the third lap made the pass on Bailey for the lead. Taylor held on to the lead taking the moto and overall win. Bailey finished second for the moto and overall. Third for went to Mountcastle who finished with a huge smile. Mountcastle’s first visit to the 250B class proved one thing to him: These guys are fast! In the first moto Yamaha two-stroke rider Chase Smothers smoked to the front. Landon Rapp was second and Josh Taylor third. With the pack laying down fast lap times, Taylor was running a better than Rapp and on the second lap passed him for second. The moto was set and Smothers took the win with Taylor and Rapp behind. In the second moto Smothers again had his head down and elbows up, racing away from the pack for the moto and overall win. Rapp had a good start running in second with Drake Bailey third, Taylor fourth and Bryce Cox fifth. First moto runner-up Taylor was in a hurry to get towards the front and passed Bailey on the second lap. Bailey charged hard but the leaders Smothers and Rapp were out of touch. Rapp finished second for the moto giving him second overall. Spencer Mountcastle finished sixth overall in his first B ride.

The 85 classes are always fun to watch because some of the riders are new to the sport, while others have been riding for years with a style that looks almost prolike. In 85Sr it was as easy as 1-2-3. KTM rider Luke Fineis took both moto wins while John Perovic finished second with Suzuki rider Zennon Shain took the third step on the podium with third each moto. In the 85Jr class things were more mixed up and the riders had to use the math skills from school to figure out the overall. In the first moto KTM rider Anthony Edgerton put on a school of his own, showing the rest of the class the fast way around the track, taking the moto win. Second was KTM rider Mark Fineis with Jacob Snodgrass third. From the start of the second moto Edgerton was again the head of the class, running with Fineis second. Yamaha rider Andrew Hayhurst was third, Kawasaki rider Brandon Bollino fourth with Luke Jackson fifth. At the end of the second lap Bollino had made the pass on Hayhurst into third. Jackson was fifth but on a charge, and caught Hayhurst making the pass for fourth. Issues for Hayhurst didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end there as first moto third-place finisher Jacob Snodgrass passed him for fifth. At the end of the moto it was Edgerton first giving him the overall win, with Fineis second. Third

for the moto was Bollino with Jackson fourth and Snodgrass fifth. Now for the math skills. First and second were clear but what about the rest? Snodgrass had a 3-5, enough to give him third overall. Jackson with a 5-4 gave him fourth overall ahead of Hayhurst. One thing was for sure it was great racing. At the end of the day the crew had done a great job. “Sunday” racing at Joliet Joliet, Illinois - June 19 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

warm summer day and the Joliet Motosports crew welcomed everyone to round four of the Arsenal Series on the Motocross Track. Joliet is better known for its Stadium track, but hosts races on the outdoor motocross track three times this year. Joliet, in fact, has three tracks including the kid’s track. They are the only District 17 facility who offers practice on all tracks during the week under the lights. There’s something for everyone to ride and the crew does a great job providing the best track possible no matter what one you choose. The first class on the track was 85Jr. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Brandon Bollino jumped to the front and put in clean laps taking the win. KTM rider Luke Jackson was on the gas and charged for the whole moto but ran out of time, finishing second. Husky rider Joey Elliott finished third with Wylie Roberts fourth. In the second moto Jackson didn’t waste any time and was quick to the front, riding fast trying to break away from the pack. Jackson did what he needed to and took the moto win, giving him the overall as well. Elliot had his Husky moving and finished second. First moto winner Bollino finished third giving him second overall. Roberts again

finished fourth in the moto and overall. In 85Sr, it was all Hunter Billingsley taking wins in both motos ahead of fellow KTM rider Kevin Mulligan. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Preston Gusewelle finished third with Honda rider Andrew Voegtle fourth. In the second moto, with the first two spots sealed the battle was between Gusewelle and Voegtle. Voegtle got into third and wouldn’t give it up, leaving Gusewelle fourth for the moto and overall. In the 50cc 4-8 first moto KTM rider Jaxson Schiller had the lead and was trucking. Cobra rider Joey Arnold kept the pace and wouldn’t give up. Schiller jumped a little far on the infield double and had a hard landing causing him to go down. Arnold took advantage passing him for the lead. Schiller got back up restarted and headed out after Arnold and but ran out of time as Arnold took the win. The rider with the best seat

for the battle was KTM mounted Ryder McGee. In the second moto it was again Schiller out front with Arnold in tow. The difference this moto was Schiller kept the rubber side down and didn’t make any mistakes, taking the moto and overall win. Arnold kept charging and finished second ahead of McGee. Another 50 class that had good racing was for the much older riders in +50. This was the second biggest class of the day, and when the gate dropped it was clear these guys came to race, and race they did. In the first moto Honda rider David Jolin was hauling the mail, taking the moto win ahead of Jason Dollas, Larry Bank and David Thomas. When the gate dropped for the second moto Jolin was again out front showing the pack the cool way around. Bank turned it up a bit, charging in the second spot with Thomas third and Dollas fourth. At the end of the moto the order held giving Jolin first overall with Bank second. The 125 class is always a fun class to watch. At times it has old bikes fixed up, mixed in with brand new ones. It also has a wide range of riders. Some have just moved up from minis while others

have been riding 125s for years. Yamaha rider Davey Fitzpatrick had his 125 smoking to the front taking the first moto win. KTM rider Christopher Gallagher finished second with Yamaha rider Walter Shelby third and Joshua Franklin fourth. In the second moto Fitzpatrick again was on the pipe taking the win and overall ahead of Gallagher. Third was the battle, and Franklin finished third for the moto giving him third overall for the day. On a Special note one rider who was riding a restored 125 in the Vintage class was Kawasaki rider Justin Hopper. Hopper traded wins with Eddie Kline, taking his first ever overall win! Congrats, Hooper.

he Range Riders Motorcycle Club took home the Hare Scramble of the year award in 2015 for hosting the Andes Tower Hills Hare Scramble. Instead of playing it safe and leaving it the same as last year, they put in an extra five miles of trails to improve what was already a great course according to the riders. The word really spread from last year on how nice the course was as the attendance increased by over 100 riders and 200 spectators. The Range Riders and Andes Tower Hills has really created a great partnership. Andes Tower Hills is known for skiing, but they really put the word out about the Hare Scramble with a billboard at the facility, an advertisement spot at the Alexander movie theatre and sent a flyer to all their seasonal skiers. Look for bigger and better things down the road

for this event with this partnership. The only thing that was missing was a little rain to keep the dust down. Otherwise, it looks like this could be a repeat for Hare Scramble of the Year in 2016. With a beautiful summer day, clear blue skies and a little wind to move the dust along, riders from as far as Canada came to test their skills on the slopes. Right off the bat it proved to be a little tricky as riders were funneled down off the start and instantly found a switchback filled with sand. Deeper than expected, multiple riders tucked their front ends and found themselves on the ground pretty quick. Not the best way to start off a race, but they had plenty of time to play catch up. During the AA race, up and comer Logan Kittock showed some speed as he led three of the four laps. Unfortunately for Kittock, the wise and crafty veteran of Check Point Off-road Racingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Matt Stavish chased him down on the last lap and pulled out the win. Reminded me of the tortoise and the hare as Kittock shot

out of the gate on fire while Stavish put in smooth consistent laps and eventually passed for the lead. Great race by both. Race of the day has to go to Garrett Hansen, Nathan Zambon and Jake Hinkemeyer. The Vet A trio had a battle that would end on a climax that even got the crowd’s attention. Hinkemeyer led two of the three laps while crashes would put Hansen and Zambon exchanging positions back and forth. On the final lap Zambon passed Hinkemeyer as did Hansen. In front of an anticipating crowd Hansen had one last chance to get by Zambon and with a long sweeping right hander Hansen pinned in on the outside while Zambon tried his best to stay low and hang on to the position. Unfortunately for Zambon that is what it came down to. Hanging on. Both riders got to the corner and Zambon exhausted from the two plus hour race lost the rear wheel and didn’t have the strength to pull out of it and ended up taking both himself and Hansen out. As the crowd came to its feet yelling with excitement it was Hansen who mounted first and crossed the checkered flag for the win, Zambon in second and Hinkemeyer rounded out the podium. In the end nine seconds separated the three. Luckily no one was hurt, everyone came away with a great story and had fun. Team Mohawk Racing’s Aundrea “Drea” Aartmann at the ripe old age of 13 put her #199 Yamaha out front leading both laps as she took her first ever win in the Women’s class. This is Drea’s first year in the class and she is now in second place in the points standings. She also took an impressive six in the Premier class. Drea has been racing now for seven years and is becoming quite the little rider. Those following our new riders, Matt Gamache tied his best with a third place finish in the 250B class but what really stuck out was that he placed thirty-fifth overall A/B. Despite the dry conditions, riders had a blast taking over the ski resort weaving in and out of the trees, climbing up and down the hills and negotiating the off camber hills. Thanks to all the volunteers for your dedication to the sport and to Andes Tower Hills for allowing us to enjoy such a great facility. Remember that volunteers are always needed and welcomed.

ansen’s Hollow in Spragueville, IA saw the creation of a new event courtesy of the District 17’s WFO Promotions for racers to enjoy their motorcycles and quads. The rocky hills of Hansen’s Hollow brought in 147 entries for the hare scrambles race on this second weekend of July. With a small threat of storms in the afternoon, WFO front-man Ron Whipple was eager to get the races started on time, and beat the rain. on, but remounted and charged back to second place ahead of Cooper Lair. Austin Burns continued his win-streak in the class. 50cc (7-8) saw KTM mounted Levi Fortune take the win ahead of Ayden White and Brady Dillbeck, both also aboard KTMs. In the sixteen rider 65cc Beginner class, Kyle Walker took his third win of the season over Cameron Walker and series points leader Lane Davis. In the morning mini race, 85cc class racer Elijah Berryman took the overall win from the second row. Jayson Crawford and Lake Plowman would round out the podium in the class. In the Women’s class, Allie Roland took her sixth win of the season despite a

mid-race charge by BriAnn Stocklen. Stocklen finish second with Darcie Graham a little ways back. In the 98-200cc C class, KTM rider Thor Rick took his first win of the season, topping Jayson Crawford and Jacob Rossmiller. Patrick Hirschman won 201-Open C over Prophetstown, IL native Thomas Walters and Husqvarna rider Kyle Lindemann. After a few course alterations were made, the afternoon big bike classes took to the hills. Luckily the rain missed the location and we had a great afternoon. In what seems to be a reoccurring fashion this season, Yamaha rider Cody Barnes ripped the holeshot and never looked back, taking the overall by a large margin. In fact, he was the only rider to make nine laps! Colt Converse took the runner-up spot aboard his Yamaha YZ250F and Matt McDonald grabbed the last spot on the AA class podium. McDonald, “I had a really bad start but made my way up to 4th during the first lap. A little before the end of the first lap, I hit a rock and felt something weird. At the checkpoint, I confirmed that I had a flat front tire. I kept going to see how it would be and it definitely made for some sketchy moments, but it was rideable. I finally got used to it and had a nice little battle with Chris McKelvey for third. I

think he had an issue with a rocky uphill as I was able to build a nice gap and finish third for my first podium in this series this year!” One of the most impressive rides came from 98-250B rider Tanner Whipple aboard his Kawasaki KX100. He was turning heads as he was catching tail-end AA riders from roughly two minutes behind, by the end of the first lap! Whipple would put a hurting on the 98-250B class, finishing sixth overall. Buddy Fortune finished second in the class, followed by Nick Balzer. The Quad A class saw East Peoria native Shea Dickson take his third win of the season, making it 3 of 4 so far. Perfect Night in Woodstock Woodstock, Illinois - July 15 District 17 Stadium MX Series

id July, we all found ourselves in the midst of our first heat wave this season. As this Friday night came, those temps broke a bit, and it became an outstanding night for racing. A light mid-day shower even helped the crew prepping the track, and when it was all done, everyone attending this round of the Woodstock MX Series was in for a great night. Some more sand, touching up of a few jumps, tweaks to a couple corners, and it felt like a new track, yet again. Seems to be a recurring theme here - and that’s a good thing. In the +40 class, Larry Banks ran into problems in the heat race as he went down in the large sand corner while leading. After finishing third, he came off the gate in the main on a mission, fighting his way around Steve Perkins in the first jump section to take the lead. This time he avoided making any mistakes, and went on for the win. Perkins kept him in check while in second, with Kenosha, WI’s James We h r m a n third.

The 85Jr class is stacked with some really good riders, and we saw eleven of them take the gate drop tonight. Lucas Geistler had the quick reaction as he pulled the holeshot. Quick to jump in behind him was Anthony Edgerton.

Woodstock/ Thor/ Dunlop backed Edgerton after the moto, “It was a lot of fun, and I really like the track. The jumps and everything are nice and smooth. I started in second but kept hitting the inside and pushing till I got the lead. Then just rode hard and gave it all I could.” Edgerton made his way around Geistler as they started the second lap and went on for the win. Meanwhile, on the move from mid-pack was Yamaha mounted Noah Bindas. He worked to fifth in the first lap, then slowly made his way past Deegan Cooley, Evan Griffiths and late in the race, Geistler to finish an impressive second place. Zachary Brunner jumped into the lead right away in the 85Sr class, ahead of Anthony Vargas. Late in the moto, as the riders stayed really close, Trace Franzke worked into second to knock Vargas back a spot as they crossed the line ahead of Jack Roberts and Brooke Kennebeck. The youngster in the 50cc classes put on a show. In 50Jr, Nolan Simonton took the lead out of turn one, and never looked back. Jaxson Schiller ran in second all

the way, and even with a quick tip over in the deep sand section, never gave up fighting to make sure Simonton earned the win. Chase Blazek ran in third early, before dropping the spot to Jayten Thompson. 50Sr saw North Aurora, IL’s Preston Zollers take the heat race win, then jump out front in the main. Riley Busse was keeping him in sight, then mid moto when it looked like Zollers had it won, he went down in the same deep sand troubling a few riders through the night. Zollers was up pretty quick, and fought his way back to second. With a lap left, he made a great charge for the lead, but came up short, as Busse was intent on taking the win, and did. Nate Bierbom had a ring-side seat for it all in third, just ahead of Owen Bills and Nathan Waldrom in the eleven rider group. With twenty-seven 250C riders signed up, the class was again split into two groups. In Division one, leading from the first turn, and then building a safe lead to the checkered flag, Logan Rusk put it all together.

Nickolas Lorenz fought hard, and won both 250 and Open B.

Honda mounted Lusk, after taking the win, “Tonight is going really well so far. I’m riding smooth, and that really helps. The track is really nice. Since last year they made this a little more challenging, but well built so it is fun. I really enjoy it. Hopefully I keep the ball rolling as I still have the Open class yet to go. I have a lot of friends helping me out, and that’s what makes this sport so cool.” Lusk did go on to win the Open C class later in the night, after yet another great ride. Behind Lusk in that 250cc class, Tanyon Palka started in second, and held off a few early challenges to then open a little gap by the end. Brandon Jackson mixed it up in third early before the sand bit him, and he finished behind Erik Carlson and Jake Luchini. In the second division of 250C, Kurtis Knull grabbed a holeshot and made the most of it. Getting pressure by Andrew Gerdau all the way, Knull held on for the win as Clay Wahlstedt made a big push through the pack to lock down third on the final lap.

Knull after the win, “I surprised myself getting a good start and then just protected the insides to hold on. I stalled off the line in the heat race and finished in almost last place, so yea, this went a lot better. Racing at night is a lot of fun. I just started two years ago, and this is my first year out here so it is still pretty new.” The 250B front runners offered up the closest, and most physical clash of any tonight. Jarred Berggren and Nickolas Lorenz to be specific. It started in the heat race, where Lorenz showed no doubt he wanted the win. It wasn’t shocking to see the contest continue in the main when Berggren grabbed the holeshot. Lorenz was on his rear fender a half a lap in, and everyone in the pits took notice. Lorenz was all over the track trying to make a pass happen right away while Berggren showed he wasn’t about to back down. In the first laps, the two came together a couple times. As they went into lap three,

Lorenz took off the gloves and dove under Berggren, essentially leaving him

no where to go. As they came back apart, Berggren went down, and Lorenz rocketed off to the win. Kyle Schneider, Blake Bauer, and Jacob Lorenz benefitted from the action as they all moved up, with Berggren rejoining the race in fifth for the final order. The action of the night continued from the 65Sr class riders. Out front Lucas Geistler had his hands full with a big push from Ryder Beth. The two were dragging bars for almost two laps before Beth took over the lead. Then Geistler went down in the sand section, dropping a few positions. Deegan Cooley played it cool the entire time in third, and finished second after Geistler dropped it. The night ended right on schedule, and anyone here had to look back and check it off as another winner. Good friends, a night of fun racing, really, what more could you ask for? At least until we all get to do it again!

Baraboo 2 Day Trials Contest Baraboo, Wisconsin - July 16-17 By Kevin Huber

he Wisconsin Observed Trials Association (WOTA) event on Mountain Road in Baraboo saw Noel Smage step up to be the Trialsmaster this year. With a lot of help from many other WOTA members, eight challenging sections were created for each day. Noel’s son Pat, eight time NATC Trials champion joined the Champ class Saturday and put on a good show with a perfect score for the day. Then on Sunday, Noel’s other son, Phil who is on a break from the Marvel Universe Live traveling thrill show entered and rode with the Champ class. These two brothers have tremendous talent on a trials bike and are impressive to watch. Baraboo is known to be a difficult event to ride due to the numerous rocks, but always draws a good group that are up for the challenge. There was a good turnout of riders from Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. The weather was perfect for

Saturday and traction was very good, allowing riders to maneuver around and over the various obstacles. Early Sunday morning it rained, making the rocks wet and slippery at first. They did dry out as the day went on. In addition, the temperature and humidity was a bit higher Sunday. This gave the riders a good test of their stamina. Oakford Hare Scramble Oakford, Illinois - June 26 By Austin Wells

nce a year since 1998, and offand-on since the mid-70s, landowner Dave Ayers has enjoyed hosting hare scramble races at his 360 acre farm in Oakford, Illinois. Three clubs come together to make this great event happen: Trail Blazer Riders, WFO Promotions, and the Dirt Riders. These clubs work together very well and it shows with 146 riders coming out to do battle, not only against each other, but against the heat from Mother Nature as well, with temps reaching almost 90 degrees. Jay Hall and his crew set up a four mile

loop for the minis and morning big bikes and a seven mile loop for the afternoon classes with over a mile of never before ridden trail. According to AA racer Drake Lineback, “The course was a loose soil, set up with lots of switchbacks and laid out over some nice ravines and hills. The off-cambers were a fun, technical aspect that I enjoyed but the most thrill of the day was crossing the five foot log every lap, which the spectators seemed to like as well!” The ever-competitive 85cc class saw Elijah Berryman take the win on his Kawasaki over Yamaha rider Chad Phelps and Rock Falls native Jayson Crawford on his Kawasaki. In the Supermini class, Tommy Fortune made a

triumphant return to racing after taking a couple weeks off with a mild concussion. Fortune took the win aboard his new Honda CRF150 over local-boy Kamryn Shockey, and KTM rider Kyle Roberts. The Women’s class saw a battle for the lead almost the entire 45 minute race. Allison Roland held the slight edge on Husqvarna rider Riley Walters. BriAnn Stocklen rounded out the podium in third, aboard her KTM. During the morning big-bike race, the closest battle was between 98-200C racers Jhadyn Walker from Morrisonville, IL, Thor Rick from Ottawa, and Michael Burtle from Glenarm, IL. Walker took the overall win in the morning, only four seconds ahead of Rick, with Burtle just

nine seconds back. In the Open C class, Honda mounted Brandon Griffiths found himself victor over IA native Derek St. Clair and Kawasaki rider Jordan Emmons. Course changes were made after the 90 minute morning classes finished. The afternoon classes were on the starting line, hiding from the sun underneath umbrellas. AA racer Cody Barnes went on to take his second overall win in a row in the WFO series. “I was able to get a good start and lead into the woods. The first lap was a decent pace but no one pushed hard because we didn’t know where to go. Going into the second lap I was able to pull a little lead and start stretching it out. On the third lap, I took a pretty bad crash in a field and got pretty banged up, but was able to get up and continue and come out with the win. The track got pretty rough towards the end of the race, but all-in-all, it was very good.” Colt Converse would rebound from a mid-pack start to finish second overall, “I got a fifth place start and slowly worked my way up to third, behind Barnes and Lineback. I followed Lineback for two and a half laps and managed to get around him. I put in a hard charge to try to catch the leader [Barnes] but I couldn’t make up the time. Rounding out the podium in the AA class was Midwest Motorsports/ Gotcha Computers backed Drake Lineback aboard his YZ250. “I settled in quick on the first lap, knowing it was going to be a hot day on a dry, slippery course, but thanks to Fly Racing for getting me some vented gear to help!” Lineback later reported that he was having some bike issues, having to ride in 1st gear only for some of the day. Jeff Kaylor aboard his Hall’s Husqvarna took the 98-Open A win over Colten Zuidema and Ryan Duff. In the 98-250B class, Tanner Whipple came out on top, aboard his KTM 200cc. Echo Valley Motocross Brookston, Minnesota - June 26 By Samantha Laderer

n June 25th, the central region of Minnesota saw a huge storm pass through with heavy rains and high winds that ended in quite a bit of damage. Echo Valley was hit by this storm late in the afternoon which ended practice about an hour early. Some riders left thinking that the track wouldn’t be good on Sunday, but those who know how the track takes rain, knew that the track would be perfect. On Sunday, once the sun rose over the tree line, the wet spots started to dry, making for prime riding conditions. The track was still wet during practice, but that was fine as some really good lines were formed. The race day started out with a combination of five different classes on the line in a double drop. This included +35A, B, and C as well as the +45A and B/C. District 23’s Rick Amatuzio led both motos (riding in +35A) and checked out for the wins. 48

The second moto saw another assortment of riders; 85cc 9-11 and 12-15. Curtis Biorn and Jacob Paige led the riders down the holeshot. Biorn was in the lead for the 12-15 class as Paige rode in 9-11. Although they were in different classes, Paige chased after Biorn and tried his hardest to keep the pace. Mitch Petrick, a Canada native ran in the second position for the 12-15 class and stayed close to Paige. In the 9-11 class, Kona Rodrigues battled with the three others for the second position. Rodrigues chose some good lines and was able to stay ahead of the others. Having the others right behind pushed him to go faster and hold his lines. It was a huge confidence booster for him. Race five saw another group of vet riders, the +40A, B and C. This time Amatuzio had some good competition in the A class. Off the start in moto one, Amatuzio with Kyle Love and Mark Johnson came into the first turn bar to bar. Love

and Johnson were able to make the corner with ease, but Amatuzio saw trouble as he slid out. This left the other two to have all the fun up front and battle for the win. Love stayed ahead of Johnson, by just enough. Amatuzio managed to go from dead last to finish fifth. In the second moto, the three made it through the first turn without a problem. Love took the lead leaving Amatuzio and Johnson to fight for second. Johnson made a small mistake which allowed Amatuzio to put a small gap between them, but that didn’t last long. Johnson caught back up within a lap. On the last lap Johnson was able to make the pass for second only three corners from the finish line. Warrant Hanninen and Craig Janzig finished out the top five. Race nine saw quite the battle between four ladies who were looking for the Women’s class win. Aylssa Storlie took the lead out of the gate with Cherish Fischer, Linzy Lavalley and Samantha Laderer right behind. Laderer passed

Fischer and Lavalley right away and was in pursuit to catch Storlie. Half way through the first lap Storlie saw trouble when she went a little high on one of the big bowl turns and went over it. Laderer took the lead and was able to put a decent gap between her and the rest of the ladies. Storlie got back up and was able to catch up to take a third in the moto. Fischer finished in second. In the second moto Fischer and Storlie got tangled right away while Laderer and Lavalley got stuck on the gate. Once the gate finally fell both Laderer and Lavalley shot down the line leaving the other two behind to get untangled. Laderer held on for the win. Lavalley ran in second until Storlie caught up and passed her. Fischer finished fourth. Another good race to watch came courtesy of the 65cc riders in the 7-9 and 1011 classes. The riders stayed close the first lap before Zach Brown was able to

carry a little more speed up the hills and get a gap between him and the others. Sawyer Niewind and Cooper Abbott battled for the second position. The two went back and forth all first moto while Adrian Hauge followed close behind waiting for his chance to make a pass on the two. Hauge was new to Echo Valley, so he hesitated a little more than he normally would. In the second moto, Brown again checked out after the first lap, leaving the other three to battle it out. Hauge was a little more use to the track at this point, and went to make a pass on the second lap but pushed a little too high causing him to fall over in a corner. “This track looks amazing and is beautiful. It is a great track because it challenges the riders with the big corners and jumps,” said Hauge’s father in response to how they liked their first time at Echo Valley.

Never guess what it will do to a track. As the riders saw, the rain on Saturday led to mint conditions for Sunday’s racing. Teri and Amber, the mother-daughter duo that runs the track, as well as Spencer Kadlec, Amber’s husband, would like to thank everyone who took the chance with the rain and stuck it out to race. he day was Friday July 8th, one day before Fantasy Moto crew was scheduled to hold a District 16 two-day points race at its Wittenberg, WI race facility. The weatherman predicted a perfect sunny weekend, however, Friday night as racers were pulling into the pits, good ole Mother Nature opened up the skies and dumped a whole bunch of water on the track. Scott Biese though had things figured out pretty well, because usually par for the course he has to deal with this kind of weather at most of his events. The good news to all this, was Mr. Biese decided mid-week to dump over 100 truckloads of sand onto the racetrack which mixed in well with the black dirt soil creating a nice loamy track in various spots. Feedback from early motos on Saturday was some areas having multiple lines and the new sections with the sand added were getting rough, making for great passing options. The vibe around the pits is that everyone really likes this track and they are hoping that in 2017 there is more than one weekend scheduled at the facility as shown by the almost 300 entries that showed up to do battle for the weekend. Ponton rounded out the podium. 250B was next in line to tackle the track and it was Nick Randrup on his Donahue Super Sports YZ250 two stroke pulling moto one holeshot. Hixton D16/23 Hill Climb Saturday event kicks off weekend filled with racing Hixton, Wisconsin - June 25 D16/23 event by CMJ Raceway

ore often than not when you head to an event at the CMJ Raceway in Hixton, Wisconsin, there’s actually multiple events going on over the same weekend. One of western Wisconsin’s popular locations, the facility originated with motocross, but now regularly holds hare scrambles racing, as well as hill climbing sanctioned and paying points in both AMA Districts 16 and 23. This was one of those busy, typical weekends. Vintage motocross down in the valley, two days of hill climbing kicking off on Saturday, and a D16 hare scrambles on Sunday. Plenty for everyone to do... particularly the track crew,

but they get it done, and seem to smile all the way through it. There’s a passion there that gives you the impression they really enjoy it. It always helps when mother nature does her part, as she did this weekend. It was one of the warmer weekends so far this year. Storms pushing through Saturday seemed to split and miss the facility, and a little rain Saturday night played well into the track prep for everything come Sunday. While listening to the vintage bikes ripping around on the motocross track, we took our time to take in all the fun on the hill where 175 entries put on a good show. A great mix of riders from Minnesota, Wisconsin along with a nice showing from Iowa and Illinois all took part. It is a pretty simple process.... every

rider gets two shots at the hill, one in each round as the classes all follow a predetermined order. Fastest climb, or greatest distance accomplished wins! Easier said than done, as the hill is designed to make it a challenge. Breakers as they call them (more like walls) interrupt the hill’s already steep assent, not to mention loose soil, ruts, and a few rocks - it all makes it even more exciting. A rare difference at Hixton is the parking is at the top of the hill, as riders go down into the small valley on a side road to take on the hill’s climb. Spectators gather at the top, as well as below. The climb began with youth classes, and worked up to the biggest, and fastest machines as the day progressed. The Micro mini (50cc) riders got it all started, and right away it seemed like the action was dominated by Ellsworth, WI riders. Lane Brookshaw set a first round time

Actually, none of the top five could match the first round times - just fine with Virkus as his effort held for the class win. The same trend of faster first round times held in the 200cc class as well where MN’s Braiden Henry put his KTM over the top in 8.122 seconds ahead of Taylor O’Neil for the win. It was another impressive class to win, as it had thirteen entries. The largest class of the day had twenty-two riders... the 250cc class. Riders from four states, and all were topped by a pair of Minnesota regulars. Jason Braun’s first round 7.722 held up for the class D23’s Jason Braun won the large 250cc class, and win, as well as one of the also finished third in the King of the Hill competition.

What better could you do with a Saturday evening. The Quads usually deliver an exciting show, and tonight was more of the same, starting right off in the heats! In Quad C, Dan VonMoos, new to racing in the quads this year, battled on his #5 Honda. He went on to take the win in both the heat and main event over Sonja Kohn and Melissa Sorenson. Tyler Martin drove out of a tangle with Lucas Emling between turns one and two

in their Open Quad heat, and went on to end the heat with the win. Then in the main, he fell short to winner Tyler Schrimpf. Heat winner Keegan Reitz got the holeshot in the Quad B main, followed by Lucas Emling and Travis Greene into turn one. Heading down the back stretch of the first lap, Greene moved ahead of Emling. Reitz was pulling further out as Greene settled into a comfortable second, leaving things to heat up for a third place battle. Cody Neinfeldt hung in that battle for a short time, then dropped back behind as Emling and Tyler Sobiesczyk. Youth rider Loyal Prach was first off the starting line in the 85cc class, then went into turn one side by side with Ezra Brusky on his Yamaha. Brusky dropped behind by the second lap, but stayed right on Prach’s heels. Then going into turn two Brusky made a small mistake, letting Emmett Sund join him in turn three and go side by side into turn four. After another slip by Brusky, Sund got around. Sund was now on Prach’s back wheel, through turns one and two, pulling up next to him on the back stretch, going side by side through turns three and four. Prach managed to pull ahead. Sund relentlessly came right back at Prach. Last lap, Sund got by Prach to take the win in a fantastic race! In the Open class Nick Smith was out front with Max Smith and Jacob Walter right behind. At the half way point of the race, Nick is gaining some ground on Max, and with a slip coming out of turn one, Nick had the opportunity to get the lead back. Pleasure Riders Hill Climb Cayuga, Indiana - June 25/26 By Bud Northrup, Photos by Martha Peters and Grover Webb

he Peters father-son hill climbing team from Neoga, Illinois had a great weekend at the Pleasure Riders double header at their club grounds near Cayuga, Indiana, claiming a combined 13 class wins and a Fast Time award for the weekend. Justin Trent, from Brownsburg, Indiana enjoyed a ‘double double’ weekend, and also claimed a Fast Time award. Father Matt Peters had 4 class wins at the Saturday event, taking first place in the 450cc, 600cc four stroke, 750cc and Senior classes. Son Levi had three wins Saturday, claiming the 200cc, 250cc and the 2-stroke exhibition classes. Matt slipped to two wins Sunday, taking the 750cc and Senior classes again, but Levi grabbed four, adding the 450cc class win to the three he won Saturday. Levi’s 5.833 second first round time in the 250cc class not only held up for the class win, but also for the Fast Time of

the Day Sunday. Justin Trent was second in 5.998 seconds with Troy Camerer third. Trent had a very good weekend also, claiming two wins and the Fast Time Saturday. His first win came in the big and fast 600cc class and he made it look easy. His first round 5.799 second run would have held up for the win, but he beat it himself in the second round with a high flying 5.753 second time on his Honda. That time would also prove to be the Fast Time of the Day, and, in fact, the entire weekend. Mike Pulver was second in 5.944 seconds on his CR500 followed closely by Mark Goodman with a 5.964 second time. Justin’s second Saturday win came in the popular 400cc Stock class and he had to come from behind to overtake Dylan Brady, who turned in a 6.239 second time on his first round ride to take the lead on his KTM, with Trent second in

6.261 seconds on his Honda. Trent dialed it up just a tad on his second ride and moved into the lead with a 6.190 second time, while Brady couldn’t improve on his first ride and settled for second place. Derek Valstad’s 6.345 first round effort held up for a third place finish. Trent continued his hard riding Sunday, winning the same two classes again and nearly missing his second Fast Time. he summer has been pretty hit or miss in the Midwest... weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had some warm days, and some bad weather to contend with. Luckily it was a perfect out July sixteenth for the sixth round of Megacross to get underway. There was a great turnout tonight with some really exciting racing in all the classes. The track was looking great with several lines forming and some good options for passing showing up in several interesting spots. With the track ever evolving there is always little tweaks to keep things fresh for racing. Endurocross was back again this weekend for its final show-down. The crowd always lines up to check out the difficult lines, and launching bikes off of tires is always fun to watch. Things got underway with the 85s coming out for some great racing. The gate dropped for fourteen 85jr riders with Lucas Geistler jumping out front and not looking back. Close behind

now in fourth. As the laps counted down Geistler was starting to make a good gap on the pack as Quest and Jackson went back and forth, trading third several times. Coming to the finish line it was Geistler taking the win followed by Bolinno and Quest taking third after a hard battle. Open A was certainly a rough one tonight. The race started out very intense with Kyle White taking the holeshot on his BWR Honda followed up by Jonathan Six and Austin Das. Heading into the whoops Tom Hofmaster was on a mission pushing hard, and took over third having his sights set on the front. On the second lap White caught the pole around the tight bowl turn bumping Six into the lead only to have White come firing in through the straight and take back the lead. Hofmaster was trying every line he

could to get up there, and staying right behind the two. Unfortunately coming over the finish he clipped his back tire and went over the bars, bringing out a red flag. The race was brought back to the starting gates and finished with White taking the win, Six in second and Adam Tarara holding off the pack in third. Open B had some great action tonight with a solid group out there putting down some fast laps. Heading off the line Austin Beaty got out front for the early lead with Brian Haines and Kyle Hiester close behind him. Hitting the first section of whoops Dylan Boyd was on a mission taking over third and sticking right behind the leaders. Boyd made quick work getting into second over the table tops. Heading through the back of the track on the third lap Boyd was able to make a pass for the lead. The top five bunched up most of the race. On the last corner before the finish Haines made a move for the inside and was able to keep

the traction and pull into second at the last minute. They hit the checkers with Boyd taking the win, Haines in second and Beaty in third. Supermini rounded the program out tonight with an exciting battle going out on the track. Coming off the line Hunter Billingsley grabbed the holeshot with Tommy Fortune and Gavin Sienkiewicz battling for position. A popular place for passing was the first set of whoops and this was no exception with Fortune jumping in and taking over the lead, pushing Billingsley back to second. Coming down the straight Sienkiewicz was coming in hot and took over second hitting the berm full blast on the outside. They kept things moving right along for several laps with Billingsley really putting the pressure on Sienkiewicz. On the last lap they started to hit some lappers and Sienkiewicz got caught behind someone, leaving the door open for Billingsley to grab second as they made their way to-

Justin’s first round 5.857 second time was good for the 600cc class win, and very close to the Fast Time posted by Levi Peters. Levi sailed his KX500 over in 5.880 seconds on his first ride to claim second place, but couldn’t improve on his second run. Mike Pulver claimed third. Lilah McGurer was a double winner both days, taking both the 85Sr class and Women’s class each day. Her Mini class times were also good for the Youth Fast Time awards both days. Kasen Jenner topped the 50cc class and Jaydn Aliprandini was the winner in both the 65cc and 85Jr classes.
