arenacross - 2014! Feld Motor Sports announced the schedule for the 2014 Amsoil Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross. The 2014 season kicks off on Friday, January 3, with two nights of racing from Worcester, Mass. From there, the championship travels throughout the country, across 11 additional states before crowning a 2014 champion. ith the heat wave finally breaking, Saturday night was so nice I couldn’t resist catching some great racing at the Aztalan Cycle Club’s short track. I pulled in just as the heat races were starting and right away knew this was going to be a fun, action packed night. As usual the heat races were exciting as racers made sure they not only got into the mains but that they were securing good gate picks. Once the heats were finished and the track received a quick once over the real racing began. Quad A took the track with eight riders lining up and when the green light flashed Jake Foti grabbed a handful of throttle and powered out front into corner one. Foti never looked back as he led all the way to the finish. Timothy Loomis ran second with pres-

sure coming from Brett Durant and Chuck Calvert. Xander Figliuzzi grabbed an early lead in 50cc 4stroke with Riley Busse and then Ty Marshall chasing him. On lap three Marshall was able to carry more speed out of corner four and made a clean pass on Busse as they headed down the front straight. Marshall now put all his attention on Figliuzzi, and by the end of the next lap was breathing down his back. Marshall tried inside and outside, without much luck slipping into the lead until finally on lap six he went way inside in corner two to sneak out front. Marshall held on to the checkers for the win. Busse was able to hold off a late charge by Sutton Skodras to clinch third. When Super Sr lined up they were missing the familiar bike #20, Al Sumner, who had

gone down hard in the heat race but everyone else was ready to put on a show. Mike Yogerst launched out front but had pressure from Jack Klein, who was able to get by Yogerst on lap two. From this point Klein began opening up a gap as he cruised to the win ahead of Yogerst, Johnnie Baggot, and William Berger. Klein who had come up from Iowa with his son also finished second in Senior +40. Klein, “The Super Senior went pretty good, I got beat out of the start by number 12 (Yogerst). He was hauling all night, but I was able to move around him and secure a good pass. I put a little cushion on him and was able to ride it home for the win. In Senior +40 I got a little antsy on the start, they are not real pumped on that so they put me on the back row. After the first lap I was about sixth or seventh but I was able to work my way up into

second before the finish. There just wasn’t enough time to catch the leader. It was a good track tonight, I was really happy with how smooth it was and a nice wide groove. This is my first time here since 1991, so it has changed a lot.” Dusty Klein got out front of the Open class and managed to hold off constant challenges by the threesome of Allyx Camp, Patrick Stamper, and Alexia Hoffmann. While the three changed positions throughout the race, the one constant was Klein out front. With two laps to go Ryan Hall went down coming out of corner four and despite being in the center of the track, he didn’t cause any problems for the rest of the class before he was able to get up and going again. Cole Anderson grabbed the fastest start in 65cc but by the time lap one was over he had Loyal Prach positioned on his rear wheel. Prach tried different lines for the next four laps, looking for any weakness in Anderson’s defense. On lap five as they went into corner two, Prach was able to keep that extra throttle twist just enough to sweep

around Anderson. Anderson never gave up and on the white flag lap they were less than a bike length apart in the back straight where a lapper almost slowed Prach enough to let Anderson retake the lead. Prach, “the track was kind of slippery and some people were crashing, but in my race I just held on and hoped for the best. Cole was really tough to pass because he was all over the place to stop me. I did my best and didn’t give up and finally got around him. uly 13th kicked off round five of Megacross, with some pretty major track changes to go along with it. The back section of the track was reworked to add in some off camber jumps, a whoop section came out, replaced by a table and some of the existing tables were stretched out a bit. This certainly made things interesting with everyone riding the updated track for the first time. The Megacross crew was working hard all day before the race to get everything finalized, and it created some great racing with a good turn-out in all classes. 125cc came up early in the evening with a great race, as a number of riders had a shot at winning it. Coming off the gates, Malachi Messenger got out front with Zeno Molteni and Ben Ibanskias following closely. Coming around the hairpin, Ibanskias dove inside to take over second as Molteni was fending off Travis Ward right on his back tire. Moving through the off camber jumps Ward got around Molteni to take over third. Right before the table top section Ward stuck it hard into the inside rut and got around Ibanskias to take over second. On the third lap Matt Mellott had been charging hard through the pack, making up for a bad start. Mellott found his line and stuck it to go around the outside of Ibanskias for third. Out front, Messenger was riding smooth the entire race and crossed line un-challenged for first. Open B came out with everyone on a mission tonight. Bryon Taylor out of Florida was out at the track tonight. When I spoke to him earlier in the day he said he was living

here this summer, training for Lorettas, and had never even raced a stadium style track before. When the gates dropped Taylor flew out front to grab the holeshot followed by Damon Thomas and Nate Hornung. Soon enough Taylor was putting in smooth laps and pulling away from the pack. Matt Dissell got stuck in traffic, but managed his way

up to fourth and was putting the pressure on Hornung. Coming over the finish he took the inside and got around for third and charged right up on Thomas. They came into the hairpin pretty hot and Dissell snuck down into the inside line and shot through the corner to take over second as well. Ryan Robinson made his move on Thomas coming

through the whoops to take over third and shake things up even more. Crossing the checkers, Taylor took the win with Dissell and Robinson rounding out the top three. Open A was out with crazy racing that kept everyone on their toes. The Nationals had a break this weekend and Travis Sewell was out at the track as he usually does at least once a year. The gate dropped and they went three wide into the first corner, Sewell on the inside with Maxx Malatia and Tom Hofmaster all battling to get out front. Sewell ran out of room and actually went down moving Hofmaster into first, Kyle White snuck by the drama to second and Malatia fell into third as three put down some laps. Coming over the finish to the half-way mark Sewell had charged all the way up fourth, and was right on Malatia. Coming into the bowl turn Malatia went low to get around White as he turned up the heat for the last leg of the race. The next lap Sewell passed White for third to continue his charge forward. On the next lap, Malatia dove in and picked off Hofmaster to take the lead. #718 Thomas Wojtasow and Sewell was on a mission and Lucas Geistlier in the 50Sr class. came into the bowl turn low making it three wide once 250C was out right after with again. straight Austin Beaty got on it hard to get by Carr with his sights set on the front. The next lap Beaty was still charging hard and was able to get by Schnowske through the table tops. The laps ran out with Barnes keeping a fast pace and crossing the line for the win with Beaty and Schnowske behind. Tonight was a great night out at Megacross. The new track section was a welcome addition to an already great facility. The summer is moving right along and will be gone before we know it. With a rocky start to the year weather wise, things seem to be finally leveling out while the heat moves in and the rain has been less and less of an issue. Megacross is in full swing and there’s more action to come with a lot of races left this year, so make it over for some of the fun yourself.

his dawned as another stunning summer day in on the outskirts of beautiful, quiet Brook Park MN. It was round four of the Civil Series at the picturesque Berm Benders Raceway, although it wouldn’t be quiet for long! With morning temps in the mid fifties and a light breeze, it was promising to be a great day for racing. After the riders meeting and the singing of the U.S. and Canadian National anthems, racing kicked off with the 50cc oil injected class on a perfectly groomed track that saw fast racing all day long. In race one #246 McCoy Leger from Brook Park wheeled his Cobra to a first place finish. He would back that result up with a strong finish later in the day to claim the overall with Caleb Bohmman taking second place honors and Jacob Bostrom from Mora coming in third. Brother McCall Leger raced to fourth on his KTM. McCoy Leger mirrored that performance in the 50cc Single or Multi-speed 4-8 class to stand atop the podium a second time. Another double winner on the day came in the 85cc class with #223 KTM mounted Austin Aspros wheeling to the top spot in the 9-11 and also the 9-12 year old classes. In 85cc 12-15, #242 Jaysen Breitzmann piloted his KTM to first place with Suzuki RM85 mounted Zach Strecker second and Scott Rasmussen Jr third on his Kawasaki. Romfo wheeled her Kawasaki to the top step with a commanding victory. A name to watch in District 23 is that of Spencer Henrikson from Dalbo, MN. Piloting his KX-250, he must have been whipped after climbing to the top of the podium three times on Sunday, with victories in Junior 14-16, 250B and 1425B. In the 250B class, SkiDoo sponsored ISOC SnoCross Pro-Lite fast guy Travis Muller was making the most of the summer to grab second place with a 22 finish in the class on his immaculately prepared KTM while Yamaha mounted John Schulte from Lindstrom captured third place. In the +25A class, the top five manufacturers were represented with #302 Kawasaki racer Scott Jendro first followed by #456 Brett Jasperse and Jordon rapp Yamaha mounted Jacob flying over the spectator triple in 14-24B. Lindstrom grabbed first place honors with Gary Johnson on his Honda coming home second and David Larson holding down third place. In the Women’s class, diminutive racer Andrea Godfrey declared that she would be the Holeshot Queen of the day, and she did not disappoint when both races saw her exit turn one with a clear track ahead. Andrea would fall victim to circumstances beyond her control, but still managed to finish fifth on the day while #77 Suzuki mounted Mariah Braastad took the top spot for the day with Allison Larson using her Yamaha to carve out second place with Kala Swenson third. In what had to be the race of the day, 250A moto action #162 Honda mounted Kody Graba and #575 Connor Ahlers fought bar to bar for the entire race that saw metal to metal contact numerous times with Graba being punted off the track in the final turn before the long spectator triple jump. He was not going to roll over though, as he poured on the coals to catch back up to Ahlers in a bid for the win. On the final lap the riders

hen Doug Jackson added KTM inside the Woodstock Harley Davidson store, it was one step closer to his dirt bike roots. Doug and his family grew up riding dirt bikes, and competing at the Lake Geneva Stadiumcross track on Friday nights, and the occasional Sunday race around District 17. As all the KTM bikes started arriving, he caught the fever to start up his own race series, so he recruited his store manager Kevin Popaeko to become the promoter for the race series at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock. Sam Shafer, Kevin's righthand man, began the daunting tasks to get such an event started, beginning with the long process of getting permission from government agencies, fair board, emergency personnel and the a AMA. Once this was achieved, they started to assemble the track team. Starting with, track designer Steve Lansing, track builders Craig Carlson and Jake

Freund, AMA referee Ron Downen, announcer Dave Deringer, Kelly Popelka, Duane Martin, the Welter family, Meehans, Scott Zont, the Lamberts, and Utechs, the entire Jackson family and many more great people

helping out, the team was in place. With the first race scheduled for May 17th, the track was almost impossible to build with all the Spring rain. It was completed only six days prior to the first event, and what an event it turned out to be! With over six hundred spectators filing in and 94 entries registering to race, Doug Jackson's dream had come true! During intermission, Jackson told everyone, "this has been a passion of mine for a very long

time, thank you to each and everyone of you for making my dream come true". The June race got canceled because of rain, the July 12th race was even more spectacular, with 170 entries and over a thousand spectators. The crowd was entertained with talent in all the classes, and the intermission show including Phil Smage and his trials bike show. Two races down, five more to go. There's nothing like night racing under the lights.

unset Ridge is in full summer mode, with the heat kicking on full blast in the wide open field. The track has had another modest face-lift since the last race, and everyone on social media was talking about the new jump that has been coined the “Holy Pistoley”. The back section of the track has been completely overhauled and it all starts out with a huge uphill 110’ foot jump to the very top. It is sectioned off into single, double, triple and can be hit at all skill levels. From there it comes down a hill into some turns and spits back out into the old track, getting rid of the big tables that were once back there. The races were great today with a large turn-out, and everything went as smooth as it always does. Coming out in the first motos was Open B, with twenty riders lining up for action. Flying out of the gates was Travis Prier taking an early lead with Drew Jackson and Jacob Grafelman in hot pursuit. Back down the hill,

Grafelman got to the inside of Jackson through the sweeper, talking second over the first jump. Into the rhythm section Damon Tatar made his move into third. Prier was riding hard, staying smooth and came across the line for the win and the overall (1-1). Grafelman took second overall (2-2) ahead of Tatar (3-3). 250C was great, with lots of battles happening around the track. Moto one got underway with Ian Pistole taking the holeshot followed by Matthew Ott and Brendan Sipple stopping by from Texas. Coming up the hill, around the hairpin Ott and Sipple both grabbed the inside to get around Pistole. Coming down the hill Sipple got by Ott taking over the lead. By the next lap Sipple had already made a pretty good gap as Karson Kokotan moved up to second with Pistole still holding third. Over the line to the white flag things had shaken up again with Pistole moving up to second and Colton Burk holding third. They crossed the line with Sipple taking the win with Pistole and Burk rounding out the top three. In the Second moto Sipple took first for

the overall, Pistole second for the number two spot and Kokotan in third for third overall after finishing fourth in the first moto. 125cc was out next, in the first

moto Keanan Tinkey out of Iowa got out front when the gates dropped, followed by Paxton Kerber and Robert Kelly. Over the first jump into the hairpin, Jackson Miller made his move going to the inside to take over third. Kerber who dominated the C class last summer on his Husqvarna has been moved up to B now, and was out there fighting for the lead. Coming across the line he wasn’t able to make a move stick and Tinkey took the win followed by Kerber and Miller. The second motos ended in the same order giving Tinkey the overall. Schoolboy had ten riders charging into the first corner. Chase Sexton flew hard around the outside to take the holeshot with Tyler Scott and Travis Prier behind him. Coming through the sweeper Prier made his move on Scott, flying into the inside rut and pulling into second over the first jump. Down the rhythm

section on third lap Prier moved into first as Sexton had tipped over in a corner. Scott had also gone down and was at the back of the pack as Keanan Tinkey moved up to third. Cruising into the rhythm section for the white flag Sexton and Prier were side by side both hitting the triple; Prier came up a bit short leaving Sexton to take over the lead. Prier kept it on two wheels and moved right back in behind Sexton. The checkers flew as Sexton took the win followed by Prier and Tinkey. Once again history repeated itself in the second moto giving Sexton the overall with Prier and Tinkey following. Open A was on the move today with eleven riders. Off the drop they all filed into the first turn with Justin Kelly on the rail hard around the outside to take the lead with Brady Neys and Jonathon Six right behind him. The entire field was packed coming up to the first hairpin as Travis Sewell went to the outside to get up to second. Sewell was right on Kelly coming down the

hill as they hit the sweeper and next set of jumps going side by side several times. Moving into the back section of the track Sewell found his way around Kelley, with Neys still holding onto third. Brad Deprenger moved into third coming into the start straight. He was on a mission from a bad start, and made another move up the chain passing Kelly on the downhill into the sweeper. At this point Sewell had made a sizable lead and crossed the checkers for the win. Deprenger took second and Kelly third. In the second moto Sewell took the win for the overall. Zach Coons was second for third overall (4-2), and Deprenger took third but second overall with his third place first moto. Despite not being used to the heat since it has been such a mild summer so far, the day out Sunset Ridge did not disappoint. The new section of the track was really cool, everyone loved it. There are talks of some more changes to front section in the future as well. If you can improve

an already great track, the crew out at Sunset will surely pull it off. ook up the word determination in the dictionary or Wikipedia and it will say something about a firmness of purpose, willpower or intention. As far as District 16 MX goes, look no farther than Nate Laporte this year. He is one of Wisconsin’s faster A riders trying to bridge the gap from our Midwestern racing to the AMA Pro level. I had to laugh at Sunday morning’s riders meeting when someone asked about the day’s lineup, and when the A class would run because they just got a text from Laporte who was on his way back from Massachusetts where he was trying to qualify in the AMA Pro MX 450 class the day before, and he was closing in on Tigerton WI to race the District 16 race. Determination and perseverance enables us to succeed despite incredible odds. I don’t know about you, but I once rode an airplane from Wisconsin out to Washington D.C. for work and I was exhausted when I landed and I didn’t do anything but sit in a seat the whole way. Imagine trying to qualify for a national, giving it everything you have, coming up just short of your goals, and then resetting your goals to travel back across the country and race in your home state the next day. That is what it takes to make it to the next level. With all the rain that fell on Saturday night it made for a sloppy morning practice, but as the day wore on the Fantasy Moto track shaped up really well. However, it was a humid day that would test the rider’s fitness. Face it, we really haven’t had a summer yet so a partly cloudy day with high humidity is a welcome change to the cold and rain of this extended spring. The 250B class had about twenty riders entered, and it was Dennis Ponton out front with the holeshot in moto one. During lap one,

Brady Schernick was quickly following behind Ponton, trying to snag the lead away. The track was still pretty soupy but that didn’t hamper the charge that Jeffrey Stewart put on either. He had a bad start and was picking riders off as fast as he could. Tory Brady, Kyle Ahola and Jason Kidd were mixing it up behind the two leaders and soon Stewart caught this pack. By the time the moto was winding down, the track had claimed a few riders that were in the heat of the battle, but it was Ponton out front followed by Schernick and Stewart who made it all the way up to third. In moto two, Stewart got a much better start, beating out Brady for the lead. Kidd, Ponton, Ahola and Schernick were also right there doing their

best to keep the leaders in sight. By mid moto, Ponton was moving forward and trying to close the gap on the leader Stewart. At the checkers it was Stewart with the moto win, about four seconds ahead of Ponton. Kidd was able to hold off Ahola and Brady. Schernick went down but made it back up to sixth. Ponton took the overall with his 1-2 moto scores besting the 3-1 of Stewart and Schernick rounded out the podium with his 2-6. The Women’s class also had a good turnout. Moto one saw Sierra Heindl grabbing the holeshot over Kendra Randrup and Kendra Tutt. However, Heindl went down hard handing over the lead to Randrup. Heindl was able to get up but she was not able to continue for the day. Amanda Gibson, Angeleah Gravedoni, and Brianna Otis were rounding out the top five. At the checkers it was Randrup with the moto win ahead of Tutt and Gravedoni. Moto two saw Randrup pull the holeshot and try to check out on the group. Tutt and Gibson were running two and three for the moto, trying to keep pace with Randrup. Gravedoni and Hayle Woolf were not far behind the top three. Randrup led start to finish, beating out the other Kendra for the overall. Gibson was a solid 4-3 for third overall beating ahead of Gravedoni. Woolf went 6-5 besting Otis and Shannon Markee. These girls have been improving all year and it is exciting to see them pick up the pace. Laporte finally showed up just in time to line up for moto one in Open A. The thing I have noticed is that not only is Nate fast, but he is driving everyone else to put in the best

effort they can to try and beat him. Colton Karl has been training hard this summer also and put in decent rides both motos behind Laporte. Kyle Koosmann and Tyler Stoll had some good battles trying to get that last step on the box, but Koosmann was able to best Stoll both motos for third overall. Travis Grendzinsk chased these two each moto and rounded out the top five. As the day wore on, the track was really starting to shape up and lap times were getting faster all day. his weekend marked rounds 2 and 3 of the 2013 ShopBigwheel.com Championship series at Pleasure Riders. The riders and fans were treated to great summer weather for the entire weekend. Making his way back home after some very impressive Loretta Lynnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Regional results was Chance Trigalet. Trigalet on his Honda was flying all weekend as he prepares for the trip to Tennessee to do battle with the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other top C riders. His weekend started off in the second race of the day on Saturday as he lined up in the combined 14-24, +30A, +45 and Schoolboy moto. Trigalet running 14-24 had the pleasure of gating up with his Dad, Eric Trigalet and Kirt Monk running +30A. As the gate dropped, it was Trigalet out front with the holeshot, but not Chance as it was Dad, Eric on his Honda 450. Monk came out in second with Chance on his 250 running in third. As the riders made there way through the moto, Monk eventually got around Eric Trigalet for the lead in 30A. As the white flag came out and the riders worked there way around the up hill step up, and Chance Trigalet rocketed his Honda around the outside of Monk, into the overall lead and win. As they came towards the checkered flag, it was Chance Trigalet taking the win. Winning the +45 was Mike Pulver and Schoolboy was Gage Noblitt. Moto two saw a very similar battle take place with Monk out front early and the Trigalet combo running side by side over a few of the jumps early in the race. In the end again, it was Chance Trigalet taking the win. Monk won the 30A, as would Pulver in +45. Different story in the Schoolboy class as Taiga

Judd on his Countryside Husqvarna 125 took the moto win and overall ahead of Noblitt. 250C saw Trigalet do battle again as he lined up with eleven others, including class newcomer Hunter Wilson. Wilson was making his big bike debut, and feeling pretty good in practice on his new Honda 250. Trigalet went wire to wire in both motos, but the battles behind him were great. First moto, Bryce Cox on the Yamaha finished second with Sam Sappington, Wilson and Kenner Shutt on his Honda rounding out the top five. In moto two the battle behind Trigalet was another good one with much different results. Cox crossed back in fifth, Jeffrey Chaney 4th, Sappington was consistant again in 3rd, but it was newcomer Wilson finishing in second, and getting the second overall on the day. Open C was once again a dominating performance by Trigalet as he pounded Chance Trigalet had a big weekend sweeping most of the classes he entered. the field. Tri-City WFO Hare Scrambles Wyatt Barnett, winner of the 250B class was asked how Tri City compared to other races, “Tri City was a very fast paced race compared to the others this year. The shorter lap times and usage of the motocross track made the race fun for me since I have my racing roots in motocross. The track itself was unique. If a rider liked motocross they were sure to excel but if the rider was woods only type, they may have struggled with the different riding style.” After a day full of challenges the riders are happy to say they had a lot of fun and can’t wait for the next race. Coal Valley, Illinois - July 14 By Kylie Kelsall

FO hosted the fifth race of the season in Coal Valley, Illinois. The race was held at the Tri City Motorcycle Club grounds. The riders had many challenges all day, but over came them and had a great time. The Tri City layout being half motocross track with some woods worked in made the riders work harder, and be more aware due to the fact not all of them race motocross. The laps were shorter and included more jumps with a more consistent terrain on the motocross side. Riders also had to change mind frames and deal with the changes in speed and reflexes to the unpredictable in the woods.

A number of riders found the mud section more of a challenge than they wanted.

The heat and dry weather also posed problems for the riders. The WFO crew even had to water parts of the track. After some mud was made the riders had difficulty seeing as their goggles, bodies, and bikes were covered in dust and mud. Even with the many challenges the riders still performed and battled against each other in typical fashion. In the Open A class Joey Fortune (95) and Drake Lineback (127) went head to head through the heat and mud for first. Fortune turned consistent lap times and held strong through the entire race. He had a lot of pressure from Lineback who was never more than a minute behind. Fortune came out on top with a fifty-six second lead. Adam Bonneur (22) and Travis Ward (51) blew through the Coal Valley track in their battle for the win in the AA class. Both had lap times under eight minutes the entire race. The two guys were close until the very end when Bonneur pushed ahead and won.

ight at the end of the June Motorsports Park in Byron, IL held the Loretta Lynns North Central Youth Regional. Things went as smooth as ever with a large crowd descending on Byron. As most know, at a regional event it is a three moto format, with everyone fighting for admission to race at the Loretta Lynns Ranch, the biggest amateur national out there. With three motos to run, the event is split into two days beginning Saturday and finishing off on Sunday. With almost 600 entries for the eighteen classes running, a majority of the gate drops where completely full. The racing was fierce with the top six out of sometimes forty riders in a class moving on. Saturday, as I made my way to the track it was pouring the entire way, and it continued as I pulled into the park. The turn-out was huge, and many of the racers and families had been there half the week practicing as well. With three motos to get done the racing was happening in the mud without a doubt, and it certainly did. It rained all day as the riders where sliding and falling all around, making the races take longer to complete than usual, but the Motorsports Park crew was on top of everything all

day, working very hard to keep everything moving. All day it was guys up to their knees in mud helping riders back onto their bikes, and heavy equipment trying to clear out any large puddles that started to form around the track. To commentate on the racing was next to impossible as everything was mud covered, bike numbers, bikes, and the riders. Despite the conditions, the day moved on getting through the first set of motos and as much as possi-

ble to set the stage for a conclusion come Sunday. The gamut of states represented was extremely diverse, all the way from Texas to Pennsylvania and everywhere in between. There were of course plenty of local riders looking for that ticket to Loretta’s. Chase

Sexton was looking to qualify for Super Mini (12-15) and (13-16). He has already qualified for Mini Sr and Mini Sr Limited, filling up the four allowed classes one rider can qualify for. Sexton was out in the mud having some problems in his first race of the day for Super Mini (12-15), when everything was really sloppy. He took off in the lead only to go down and battled back up for fifth. He finished first overall over the three motos getting first in the last two. In Super Mini (13-16) the track had dried up slightly, and Sexton took off with the holeshot and never looked back, staying out front and somewhat clean for the most the race. He won the second moto as well, but came in second on the third moto giving Hunter Sayles out of Wisconsin the win and first overall. Sexton did qualify for all four classes he was

looking for, and should be a force at the Ranch. It rained just about all day, with some sprinkles mixed in before it finally calmed down later in the evening. The conditions certainly made for some interesting endings of the results, with some riders faring better in the mud, while others came back from bad rides in the mud. While Sunday was nice out, the track was wet, but in much better condition to say the least. Some examples would be Noah Coates in the 51(4-6) Shaft Driv Lim class coming in twelfth the first moto but second and first in the next two grabbing second overall. Even the overall winner of the class went 7-3-2, so just about anything was possible between the two days. Being faced with such a challenge, the staff at Motorsports Park kept a cool head, and got everything taken care of. It was stressful, to have no

choice but to run such a big event in the rain, where the results matter so much to racers and their families. Denson, Northrup, Jack top Polo Polo, Illinois - June 16 By Kevin Northrup

he Rock River Riders ran their Father’s Day hillclimb at their club grounds near Polo, Illinois. Josh Denson, Jason Northrup, and Jeff Jack emerged as the top winners of the day. Denson claimed the amateur Fast Time Award, winning the big and fast 600cc class with a sizzling 3.176 second time on his second ride on his KX500. Bobby Senn was closest to him in the class with a 3.402 second run, with Dan Groth third. Northrup took the Open class win on his 1250cc Kawasaki four banger, posting a very good 3.268 second round time. Joey Danekas was second with Derek Swanson third. Jason brought his big Kaw back to run in the King of the Hill class, a one run, winner take all, shootout for the ten fastest riders of the day, regardless of their engine size. He flew the big bore bike over the top in an incredible 2.958 seconds (overall fastest time of the day) to take the coveted ‘King’ award. Josh Denson was his closest challenger with Paul Hackbarth, Kirk Gorsuch and Jeff Jack filling out the top five. The big four cylinder just seemed to ‘hook up and go’, where the smaller bikes had trouble getting traction. Jeff Jack was a triple winner, his first coming in the 200cc class, where his 3.710 second round time on his KTM was good enough to overtake Morgan Wheelwright who carded a 4.170 second time on her KTM. Jack’s second win came in the Super Sr (+50) class, with a good 3.350 second ride, well ahead of runner up Mark Dunbar with a 3.983 second time. Mike Bacon was third in 4.113 seconds. Jeff finished his day by winning the 400cc stock class, the only rider in the class to top the hill, which he did in 5.083 seconds. Tommy Fortune, Morgan Wheelwright, Eric Wheelwright were all double class winners. Fortune took his wins in Youth action, with his 97’ effort in the 32 CYCLE USA, August 2013

65cc class, good enough for that class win as well as the Youth Fast Time award. Gaige Kramer was second with a good 92’ ride and Jaydn Aliprandini third. Fortune turned in an almost identical run to win the 85Jr class, with Kramer again in second place and Ryan Rhodes third. Morgan Wheelwright got her first win in the Women’s class with Sierra Leek second, then took the 125cc class win with Steve Coon Jr second. Morgan’s dad, Eric Wheelwright, also had a good day, his first win coming in the 250cc class with a very good 3.336 second time, with Chad Altfillisch close to him in 3.398 seconds. Eric also was fast to win the 450cc class, with Josh Denson close behind. Both Eric and Morgan Wheelwright claimed two wins and a second out of the three classes they entered – another typically good outing for the father/ daughter team from Elizabeth, Illinois. Maier Sweeps Big Azzie Lake mills, Wisconsin- July 14 By Dave Hollub

uly in Wisconsin means two things HOT weather and even HOTTER MX racing, this month at Aztalan Cycle club did not disappoint. The Azzie crew worked hard getting the track ready and even harder at the mid day break to keep the it in great condition for the 480 entries. Some dust developed but, overall it stayed in good shape all day. Benjamin Blazek was ready when the gate dropped for PW Junior and he grabbed the first of his two holeshots leading the rest of the class out onto the track. Blazek slipped up on lap one and fell back into third behind Ayden Price and Nolan Schweighardt. Price had his hands full staying out front as Schweighardt pushed a wheel in on him in almost every corner but Price held on for the win. Blazek again jumped out front at the holeshot in moto two but bobbled going through the scoring area. Schweighardt took advantage and powered around him to take the lead. Schweighardt opened up a good

size gap and never looked back as he took the moto win and overall for the day. Blazek had pressure from Price but stayed in second for the moto but finished in third overall behind Price. Schweighardt, “I passed Ben by the barn in the first moto but could not pass the other guy. In moto two I was second in the holeshot. I passed Ben in the Sturn on the first lap. The track

was good but mostly dry in a lot of spots. It is pretty cool my dad also won in his race (+30B/C). Thank you to My Mom and Dad, Fast Eddie (Smulders), Scott goggles, and Schweighardt Concrete.” John Stewart jumped out front in Non-Current and then cruised to the moto win. Bobby Zielinski was busy holding off Ian Malinowski for second all moto. Stewart grabbed the moto two holeshot but by the end of lap one Zielinski had slipped past into the lead. Zielinski held on for another couple laps despite Stewart being all over his rear fender. On the white flag lap Stewart moved out front in the west end. Malinowski battled with Trey Williams for the third slot taking it over just before the checkers came out. The overall went Stewart, Zielinski, and Malinowski. Tyler Gamble took the moto one 85cc 9-13 holeshot ahead of Tristin Woolf and Dj Gritzmacher. When they hit the plateau on moto one Gritzmacher was out front as Woolf, Tristian Tuhy, and Braden Warner came over in tight formation. Warner was in second by the time lap two began, and held on to the finish. Tuhy went down on the white flag lap leaving the door open for Woolf to take third edging out Devin Blume. Gamble

again grabbed the holeshot in moto two but before the first lap was over had dropped out of the race. Gritzmacher again came over the plateau in front, but disappeared before lap two started. Ezra Rugg was out front when the checkers flew with Noah Laedtke across in second and Devin Blume right behind. Rugg took the overall with a 6/1 day while Laedtke (5/2) was second and Blume (4/3) third. 250A was the beginning of a great day for Mathew Maier, but it wasn’t going to come easy. Dillon Kau powered down the start and rounded the holeshot in the lead. Dale Kathan was close behind as they hit the plateau on lap one and then by the second time over Kathan was leading. Kau was being pressured by Dylan Ziolkowski and Maier, with both slipping by in the barn section on lap two. By the fourth time over the plateau, the three leaders were airborne bar to bar with Kathan still holding the lead. On the white flag lap Kathan was passed by both Ziolkowski and Maier in the west end sand section. Maier then went down and Kathan fell on top of him Maier was able to keep second as he got going. front around the holeshot but by the time lap one was scored both Maier and Ziolkowski had slipped past. Maier held on out front with Ziolkowski in second and Cody Behrens third at the checkers. Maier continued his A class sweep with six more moto wins to grab the overalls in Open A, Unlimited A, and +25A. Right after clinching his fourth overall of the day a very happy Maier, “My first 250A moto, I didn’t get the greatest start and the top four were all riding really good. Before moto two we did a gear change on the bike and it worked a lot better, and I got a lot better start. I got into the lead within a half lap and just put in some solid laps. It was really good racing today with Dylan Ziolkowski and Josh Philbrick, who are also trying for Nationals, so we were pushing each other pretty hard. It was good practice and great racing to make a good day. In Unlimited A I went 1/1, but in the first moto I had to catch Philbrick. Doing 36

four classes in the heat was good conditioning. I really think the track was better the second motos, and I have to say they did a really good job with track prep and watering considering the weather. Thanks to Southeast Sales, Western PowerSports, Fly, Motorex, Dragon Goggles, Hickory Road Raceway and my mechanic Eric Peters.” With twenty-six +50 riders lined up it was bound to be a good race. When the gate dropped Al Brhely edged out Tim Boblin for the holeshot, but by the time they hit the plateau it was Jeff Ramsay and Gary Behrens out front. Steve Sorge had slipped into third and had Boblin right on his rear wheel, looking for a chance to slip past. Ramsay stayed out front to the finish. Boblin slipped past Sorge in the barn section on lap two and held on to third to the finish. Ramsay took the holeshot in moto two and had already opened up a gap on Boblin by the time he hit the plateau, making it look like he was going to cruise to an easy win. When the pack came around the start area on lap two Boblin was out front followed by Wayne Welzien, Sorge and Ramsay was back in fourth. Ramsay picked off Sorge in the west end on lap two but Welzien had gotten past Boblin also. Welzien dropped back to third on lap three leaving Ramsay to work on Boblin for the lead. As they hit the plateau Boblin was out front but Ramsay was closing in and when they hit the barn section Ramsay made his move and got out front. Ramsay held on to take the win with Boblin close behind and Sorge making a late charge to finish third. Ramsay, “First moto, I was back in third, but I was able to pass the two leaders right away on the first lap. I was pretty good after

that staying out front. Second moto I got the holeshot but fell in the scoring chicane. I was able to finally get past the three in front of me and got the finish in first place. Luckily none of them ran me over. Wayne Welzien was in first for a while and then he wiped out and I had to get past Boblin. I have to thank Rob’s Powersports for helping me out.” The gates were full in most classes, and the racing action was outstanding. Super Day in Millville millville, minnesota – June 30 By Rolfe Otterness

onner Cunningham mastered the B classes at the sixth round of the Spring Creek Super Series, capturing wins in all four motos of the 250 and Open B classes. He was just one of over 400 entries to take advantage of one of the nicest race days yet this year with the track in prime condition. A few other riders with notable results were Henry Miller in Schoolboy and 14-24B, and Koby Turner smoking the 50cc 4-8 classes. Tucker Hibbert also made a good showing, winning the 14-24 A and Open A classes as he warmed up for his first pro national of the year at Red Bud. Action in the 250A class is always intense, and Nick Jackson was ready to go as they hit the track, rushing to a first moto holeshot. Jackson set a rapid pace but Clay Chapiewski was on a mission and closed in by the end of the first lap. Chapiewski surged past Jackson and began to inch away a bit as the laps went by. Devin Reed and Gavin Kadlec were in a dispute over third while behind them another battle raged between Cole Felland, Luke Peters and Blake Raskovich. When all was concluded, Chapiewski took the win with a couple of seconds over Jackson, while Kadlec held for third over Reed. Felland snared fifth over Raskovich. Felland jumped out front to lead early in the next moto with Peters and Reed in tow. Reed worked his way by to lead the next few laps and Jackson was working on Felland with Chapiewski close behind. Finally on the last lap Jackson and Chapiewski were pressuring Felland hard coming down the pro hill. Some lapped riders were in Jackson’s preferred line and Chapiewski got by him as they went back up the hill, putting Chapiewski right on Felland’s trail. Felland succumbed to the pressure as he bobbled on the last hill before the finish and Chapiewski and Jackson both got by and took the checkers. Reed held third with Kadlec and Felland trailing him to the finish line. Iowan Mike Dertien jumped out front in the first +40C race with Scot Adams and Jesse John running 2-3. Dertien had the track dialed and went on to a big lead for the win. Adams and John stayed strong to the

flag with Dave Wessling and Brian Stewart running in for fourth and fifth. The next moto went off in similar fashion with Dertien crushing ‘em, but John Dupree displaced Stewart for fifth with a determined ride. Aaron Boatman pulled a holie to lead the 85cc 9-12 class into the whoops as they charged out for their first moto. Austin Griffin looked fast as he pressured Boatman and then took over the lead. Griffin crashed in short order and dropped back a few places before he could restart, so Boatman inherited the lead and went on to take control of the moto. Seth Carpenter held second for awhile but Griffin recovered strongly and took over as the runnerup before the flag. everything was going the best they could. With help like that they are bound to become a top track in Illinois. Good luck Matt, and thank you for providing us a great place to both race and ride. With one of the best natural layouts, and the crew working the dirt into top shape, load your bike and head to Crossroads! With the rain coming down it was decided to run a one moto format, so it was winner take all. Most of the races were survival, with riders struggling all around the track in the challenging conditions. Even with the rain the staff still worked on the track, making as good as possible. It’s clear that not every rider is a mud rider, but the ones who are showed they can still lay down fast lap times. In the Supermini class, KTM rider Jason Gepford looked like he enjoyed the mud, taking the win over Hunter Wilson and Jeremy Bergbower. Gepford returner later and take the win in the 85Sr class as well, proving to be one of those skilled riders. The biggest class of the day was +30B/C. Everyone knew getting a good start was a must, and Jonathan Wiley made it count, sliding his way to the win. Behind him there was great racing between Keith Zersen and

Mark Sowarsh, and in the end Zersen finished second. All the riders in this class did well, and never gave up unless they had big trouble like Eric Howe. Howe slid out and stalled his Honda and never could get it to restart. I’m sure next race Howe will be ready and doing the nonrain dance. 250B was also a big class, and these riders were flying!! Trey Clark worked the track, picking the best lines and trying to stay clean. Travis Walker and Brennon Kershaw wanted to make him muddy but on this day they couldn’t make it happen. Clark took the win with Walker second. So even with yet another day of rain... the races went on, and with the good news of Crossroads MX staying open, and having an even brighter future... this seemed the beginning of something great!

he second round of the D16/D17 harescrambles racing at Fox Valley unfolded this day, many of the fast regulars from WI coming to race with those from riders from District 17. Many “firsts” happen as well. The scoring system used has been debugged and now is working well with online real time scoring, letting the people at home see who is doing what on race day, just ten seconds after the rider passes the check point. Another first was Kendall Eslinger (50Jr class) from stadium motocross fame coming to race her first Hare Scrambles. She showed the boys the way around the small course with style. Chasen Orme, and Darrin Herman gave her a run but simply couldn’t catch her. Landon Lee fell a time or too, but charged hard in the end to make a nice comeback. The 50Sr class had the trio of Jaret Zoellner, Lake Plowman, and Elijah Berryman who have been battling each other all summer in the D17 points chase, have another great race. They ran the thirty minute race, battling til the end with Zoellner getting the win. While the kids were banging laps on the smaller course, Super Mini, 85/65, and the Women were testing their skills on the big course. Dry conditions and running the course in clockwise motion made it possible for a much more technical track, along with the new endurocross section which the kids got their first look at in the morning race. Using only the first three obstacles for the kids, it was just tough enough for the majority of them, but not to overwhelming. Dougie Proper rocketed off the line and quickly dispatched the thirty second separation that the Super Mini riders had left ahead of the 85cc class. Proper had Tanner Whipple on his heals most of the race. Most of the racers in the 85cc class had issues with the offcamber uphill ravine section, which let the class leader catch up from the 65cc class. Garrett Ward came through on the second lap in third overall, to the amazement of many. Right on Tanner’s heals, the 65 rider was pounding some good hard laps. Proper and Whipple pulled some real time when Gman had issues, along with D16’s Sam Wolf who also passed. Proper overalled the group, Whipple second, Wolf third ahead of Ward. This all happened in the “first” hour of the day! Minor course adjustments were made and it was time for the +50, and C classes to roll. +50A has some guys that have battled for a long time, the oldest of the bunch Wally Mika who today rode his Harley pulling a trailer to 44

the races. Greg Birkland pulled another Hall’s Cycles holeshot and led for quite a few laps til having an issue midway through the race, cramping up is common with old folk. Mika took over the lead, but he didn’t realize the battle going on behind him with Rick Mahrt, Steve Bland, and Kevin Finefield. The trio was chipping away at Mika’s lead. On the last lap they reeled Mika in and with no regard to age, passed and dropped him to the last step on the podium. Finefield missed top three by a minute. The first three riders in this class were separated by less then two seconds.

+30C had twenty-nine riders, and was intense. Multiple bikes not starting on the dead engine start put faster riders behind. Coming into the abbreviated endurocross section it was mass mess. Riders with less experience negotiated this obstacle in many different fashions, with the common denominator, falling over. At one time on the log climb there was at least five riders trying to get over it. The “log” climb is pretty simple, but you can’t just slam it like a dirt jump, you have to ride it. They got it figured out as laps passed, but it took a few to clear up the section. Casey Rick, and Mike Freeman along with Nathan Ming in his first year of racing took top three tiers of the podium. So now over 150 riders have raced and it’s noon. Ready for the afternoon AA , A and B classes to hammer a much more difficult course. ALL the endurocross section is ready, and a much tougher version of Rock Creek is now included. 1 hour, 45 minutes of fast paced, log clearing, tree banging, excavator tire jumping action is to be had. Sixty-four riders are lined up, and eleven of them are AA riders. Off the start, Kyleer Vance (returning after nearly two years) showed he remembered how good he was at getting holeshots, and Austin Wells were right there in the front. Alec Perry and Travis Ward were fighting for position into the first sections. Vance held the lead on the first partial lap as Ward got past Wells and Perry to hound Vance for the lead. On lap two Ward took the lead, while Perry, Wells, and Vance battled in the early laps. Starting in last was District 16’s Husky mounted JD Friebel, already slicing through the pack to get to the leaders. Quietly Shane Klimek was also making is way to the

front. At the hour mark Ward had a about a minute lead, but this would soon go away as he lost his front end. Losing a good sixty seconds tightened up the race considerably. The last four laps were amazing. Friebel had his that 4 stroke Husky echoing through the timber as he on the rev limiter. Everyone could see him reeling in the leaders and as he got into second place it was only a matter of time before Ward be at risk. All the while, Wells, Perry and Klimek were battling for every inch of real estate. Friebel, before the white flag lap closed to with in sight of Ward. This meant the next lap and a half was going to come down to lappers, and no mistakes. Both ridersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fastest lap times of the day were the last two laps. Friebel being really close or 30 years old, Ward 17, Perry 19, Wells 19, Klimek a bit older, and their fastest lap times are the end of the race. Friebel pulled some of the fastest laps of the day at 9:31, he did that twice on the third to last lap and the last lap. Ward had consistent with 9:40â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pulled 9:38, 9:35; and the fastest of the day with Friebel hot on his heals a 9:27. Ward got his â&#x20AC;&#x153;firstâ&#x20AC;? win in AA after only a half a season, staying ahead of the charge set by Friebel. Perry, Wells, and Klimek more then once were side by side on the logs in the endurocross section. Perry held on for third, with Wells three seconds behind him! Quads have been light the last couple of seasons and todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn out was about the biggest itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been in a while. Five â&#x20AC;&#x153;Aâ&#x20AC;? riders

had some good racing. Doug Yunker won, ahead of Jerrod Thomas and Brad Holder. Eric Wittersheim bested the over heated 800cc Can Am from Borellis Suspension fame Garry Borelli. Eric was on a two seater Polaris! Fun times! At the end of the Day, the staff at Fox Valley Off Road was relieved to have a scoring system process well received by the riders. Watching the fans and family walking into each other as they looked at their phones with live results, being obsessed with the ability to be out in the timber, and see who is doing what as they go by the finish line barrels. Phone calls, text messages etc all day long were the order of the day trying to see when the race would be over, and other things. Best of times… On July 14th, near Mankato, MN, a person could look up and see the deep blue sky with the occasional patches of white clouds. It was a perfect day for some awesome motocross racing. Worst of times… The day before, on Satur-

day, torrential rains had prevented the mx practice from taking place. On Sunday the racers were anxious to tear up the track. The Honda of Phil Miklo busted out of the gates in the +45 Open class. Miklo pinned it and checked out. Jeff Schreurs zigzagged his way to second position, while Jon Holtz of Trimont, MN held onto third. Both motos ended with Miklo, Schreurs and Holtz controlling the same top positions. Seven men believed or at least hoped they

could top the +40C class. #403, Cory Wiltse ripped the holeshot with Dan Frasson, Scott Archibauld and Jeremy Peak in hot pursuit. As Wiltse and D. Frasson settled in the first and second positions, Mario Frasson snuck past Archibauld. Wiltse, D. Frasson and M. Frasson finished one-two-three. The gates dropped for moto two, Dan Frasson, Wiltse and Mario Frasson broke through the pack and sped away to the backside of the Kato Cycle Cub track. Dan kept the pace smooth and steady to the checkered flag. Wiltse claimed second and Mario held on for third. The +40A class proved to be an incredible rivalry between Brad Cunningham, Bill Medek and Darwin Frideres. Cunningham squeaked through for the holeshot, caught the step up and disappeared into the hillside. Medek and Frideres stayed close, while battling for the second and third. On lap four, Medek continued his challenge, but Cunningham stayed focused, maneuvered the downhill sweeper and flew over the triple, reaching the finish line first. In the second moto Medek found the better line out of the gates as Cunningham and Frideres followed. Cunningham kept the pressure on Medek, but couldn’t find an opening to make a pass. Medek crossed the finish line first, grabbing the overall as well. The 65cc 10-11 class was led by Josh Boaz as they came off the line. Kyle Johnson, Davis Sunken and Cole Summers kept close as Boaz checked out. Sunken and Summers passed Johnson. Boaz seized the checkered flag in both motos as Sunken and Summers followed across in the second moto again. In the 65cc 7-9 class a bit of darkness fell upon us when young Chase Hazlett lost control, flying over a jump, and landed on top of Carter Anderson. (Both riders are OK.) “Keep control of those bikes, little tikes.” Walker Krampitz and Dillon Nelson sprung out of the gates and hoped to be lead dog in the class. After a close first lap, Nelson took command. Krampitz held the throttle open as Nolyn Hempel schemed into third. Nelson returned as the victor in moto two as Hempel and Krampitz swapped the second and third place finishes. The day’s temps climbed to the high 80’s, no rain in sight, it was a good day. Friebel tops Stone Lake Stone Lake, Wisconsin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; July 7 By Keith McKenna

The beautiful Summit Lake Game Farm near the quiet little town of Stone Lake in Wisconsin played host to the fourth round of the AMA District 23 Hare Scrambles series. The morning skies dawned clear, bright and warm. With dew points in the tropical range and temps forecasted to hit ninety degrees, the racers stamina would surely be put to the test. The first racers to line up on the dusty moto track were the Premier riders, racing mostly 80cc-100-cc two strokes with a sprinkling of CRF150s thrown in for good measure. In the very competitive class, consistent front runner Collin Maynard pulled out to an early lead on his KTM 105 to gap second place Suzuki rider Jack Maki, with Colton Reschke only two seconds behind in third. The second lap saw Reschke take over second, only to be repassed by Maki on lap three. On lap four Reschke re-assumed the second position and held the spot till the end. Up next for their thirty minute turn at the course were the Micro/Macro racers. Tensions mounted on the start line (for the parents) as the little racers shot off the line. Only a few seconds behind, Travis Illies on another KTM was working to keep the lead rider honest. To complete the sweep of the podium for the orange brigade, Alex Artmann battled the heat for third place, just ahead of the Honda CRF50R of Cora Reschke. The C class/ Women race lined up next with

temps climbing. Conditions that would put the racer conditioning to the test. On the Women’s line, at the drop of the flag Yamaha mounted Mary Schreiner shot to the first turn ahead of the rest with full time motocross racer Susan Voss wheeling her KX250F into the second position with the Yamaha of Jordan Grinhaug a close third. Remarkably, that would be the finishing order at the end of the one hour race. In 200C action, Kawasaki mounted Mitch Thelen assumed the lead in a race that would see him build a two plus minute lead only to have it vanish on the last lap, when he was passed by Yamaha mounted Darrin Froemming. Nehemiah Buchholz held onto third place on a track that was rapidly becoming dusty and hammered out. The last race of the day was the two hour AA, A and B class event, featuring some seriously fast midwest offroad company. In 250B, Honda mounted Nolan Heppner looked intent to bring home the gold right from the drop of the green flag, as he established an early lead that

would never be challenged. Riding smooth and steady, Nolan was able to build up a lead that would see him cross the line just over five minutes ahead of the second place Alex Campbell, who in the end only finished six seconds ahead of Matthew Schmidt after two hours of racing. The Vet A class race proved to be a European affair, save for a lone Honda in the top six. Husqvarna mounted #25 Garrett Hansen and KTM mounted Boris Malich were the only two Vet riders able to complete six laps on the hot, dusty, rocky and heavily wooded course. Shawn Gerulli piloted his GasGas to a well earned third place. In the AA class, the fastest of the fast were all set to put on a great show. By the time the riders exited the first turn on the opening lap, all present knew that they were going to see a battle of epic proportions. Wisconsin resident, national enduro and Hare Scramble champion and ISDE competitor Jd Friebel made the journey to challenge the Minnesota hot shoes in a contest that would see him triumph in the end. But the victory would not just be handed to him, he had to earn it. The end of the opening lap saw Minnesota’s Nate Ferderer slicing his way through the woods in first place with Kyle Nelson hot on his heels. Ferderer held for the first three laps. Lap four saw the Husky mounted rider relegated to fifth place with Honda mounted Dylan Debel assuming the lead sixteen seconds ahead of second place Friebel on his Husquvarna, with Kyle Nelson just over one minute back. Debel held the point till the last lap, when Friebel snuck past to finish the race on top of the podium, with Yamaha mounted Kyle Nelson holding on to third. an’t get enough racing... well Gravity Park in Chilton, WI provided the opportunity to satisfy that desire on the expanded Fourth of July weekend. It kicked off on Friday, and then ramped up even more on Saturday afternoon with District 16 and Triplecross points. Practice and the first motos took place under natural lighting, then as the program progressed, the lights were turned on and racing continued into the evening. Nothing unusual here... as the facility runs a regular night time program, and is well set up to do so. The three event weekend was well received, and a lot of families elected to set up camp, and take it all in. On Saturday, the 250B class kicked off with DePere’s Easton Crevier jumping out to a quick lead. Shane Cooper slid into second early in the first lap, ahead of Ashley Densow. Crevier established a bit of a gap as he never looked back, and ran solid to the checkered flag. As the white flag came out, Dennis Ponton made his final pass of the moto, getting by Densow for third. Brady Schernick finished fifth. Ponton got off to a better start in the second moto and used that Bill Berger was fast, winning the Quad A class. advantage to get the moto win ahead of Crevier. Brendan Gille Telfer, and the two led Andrew Swienton to improved on his first moto seventh for third... the finish. John Bougnett was fourth all the good for fourth overall behind Shane Cooper way into the final lap before Dustin Hafen(2-5). Schernick wasn’t able to finish the stein managed to slip past. As clear cut as it

was in the front of the pack... behind Hafenstein there were four riders constantly engaged in a fight to move up. In the end, Nicholas Randrup managed to top the others for sixth on his Kawasaki. Moto two was a perfect repeat for the top three riders, starting and ending just as they did in the previous moto. Rob’s Performance/ FMF backed Bryce Telfer after getting the win, “The track is great, and my holeshots have been wonderful. Having my brother behind me in both motos was fun, and it was just a good clean pair of motos. This is my first time here this year. We always ride Arkansaw, Aztalan and a couple other places, but this is fun. I love it here, and they’ve done a lot with the track.” Randrup made the best of that first moto fight, and crossed in fourth this time for fourth overall ahead of Keegan Cummins and Hafenstein. Bryce Telfer won the Open C class as well... leading all the way. Taylor Roloff of Neenah was second ahead of Nicholas Randrup. A late race charge by both Brady Bill and Chris Groenier helped them climb into the top five. Roloff settled for third in moto two behind Hafenstein, but still had second overall locked in. Haiden Waelchli swept both moto wins in the 85 9-11 class. In the first moto Aidan McCormick pulled the holeshot with Waelchli and Preston Maki right behind. Their first trip through the new whoop section was all Waelchli needed to take the lead. McCormick rode well to finish second, and Dana Hanna made a late move inside of Maki for third. Sam Forstner crossed in fifth.

In the second moto, Forstner stepped it up and finished second ahead of McCormick while Hanna crossed the line in fourth after a rough moto. Ten +40 riders hit the track with the intent of having a good time, and showing the younger generations they could master the stadium style layout as well as anyone. Lyle Block got a little breathing room early ahead of Wayne Welzien, Tom Ferguson and Doug Forstner, but it didn’t last. Welzien and the others started jumping a few of the doubles they hadn’t on the opening lap, and were quickly all over Block. The top four stayed tight through each lap, then with two to go, Ferguson pulled a nice inside block on Welzien in a bowl turn for second. The last lap pass Ferguson pulled in the first moto had him energized before the second gate drop... hoping for a shot at the overall. He got a good jump, and pulled the holeshot with none other than Block at his side through the first couple sections of track. Forstner also had a better start, in front of Welzien. Ferguson saw his opportunity start to slip away when they hit the new whoop section the first time, and Block used the rougher side to get by and take the lead. From there the top four held tight and Block took the overall following two moto wins on his Suzuki. The second moto set the overalls... with Forstner third ahead of Welzien. Matt Fischer wrapped up fifth overall (5-5).

The 125Jr class is always quick to impress a crowd on a stadium style track. Right off the start Southeast Sales back Dennis Ponton dropped the hammer and never looked back. He led all the way, but never really pulled enough of a lead to relax as Easton Crevier was there looking for an opening all moto. Shane Cooper was in third, but eventually slid back to fifth as both Logan Telfer and then Andrew Swienton worked up mid moto. Ponton made his intent clear in the second moto as he pulled away for the win. After more close racing, the top five positions were all held by the same riders as they were in the first moto. Anthony Tamborino has been around a long time, and tonight he showed some of that experience on his way to winning both motos of the +45 class. Behind Tamborino, Racine’s Jim Middlebrook grabbed second in the first moto just ahead of Tommy Gerlach and Eric Sturm. Gerlach turned it around in the second moto getting ahead of Middlebrook when it counted for second in the moto, and overall. The 85cc 12-15 class delivered some of the night’s fastest, and closest racing. A good call was Sam Lenz through the new whoops in 125Jr. made by the track team in the first

moto. A re-start came after Dylan Densow slid out hard while leading on the first lap. He came across a rider in the track from the previous moto, and fell avoiding him. Something that shouldn’t happen, and the crew quickly stopped, and re-started the moto. Densow was hurting after the fall, but took it in stride. Starting from the far outside gate, he pushed hard into the first turn and came out in second behind the very quick Eddie Norred on his Yamaha. Norred had Densow glued to his rear fender through the entire opening lap. Sam Malcolm, Ronald Schmidt and Tommy Gerlach were having their own battle for third as well. As the laps counted down, Densow never let up, pushing Norred all the way. Norred after the moto, “Dylan went down in that first start, and I think that made a difference. He tried to get around me in the restart, but I held him off through the corner. He kept trying to block pass me in this one section, and we both had a good ride. I knew he was hurting and I doubt he was riding at his full potential. It was a great race though for sure. The track is fun, but you need good rhythm, and I haven’t ridden on anything like this for a long time. I haven’t been here in years, but I think the track is great, just different than what I am used to. I’ll get better at it. I would like to thank my mom and dad, as well as Rock River, and Sportland 2.” Norred did win the moto, and a sign of what this kid is all about, he pulled off after crossing the line, and high fived or acknowledged ever other rider coming off the track. We were set for a great second moto showdown but it didn’t happen as Norred didn’t start the moto. Densow never let up after grabbing the holeshot, and ran super fast right to the checkered flag. Malcolm and Schmidt both moved up a spot from the first moto as well, while Kendra Randrup finished fourth ahead of Gerlach (5-5 for fourth overall). The night ended on the well lit track... and everyone’s attention turned to getting a good night’s rest before the second day of big racing came Sunday.
