By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It has been a busy month in our riding and racing world, which I consider a good thing. Bringing all of you up to date on district business will take a few lines. First I have heard back from the AMA on the approval of our supplemental rules. Each year our rule book is submitted to the AMA for approval by each discipline coordinator at the AMA. The following changes have been made to our supplemental rules to keep us in line with the AMA rule book. 1. Off Road: All references to advancement have been removed from our rule book since it is the AMA that does all off road advancements now. 2. The Youth class has minor changes to bring the classes in line with AMA rules. There is now a lower cc limit along with the upper cc limit in the youth classes. Ie 0-51cc for 50cc classes, 52-65cc for the 65cc class etc. In motocross the following changes are in effect 1.The background color rule has been modified, since we can only enforce this rule on District 23 Full members and not on non district and one day members. The modified section now reads as follows. a.A class Black letters on White background b.B class Black letters on Yellow background c.C class White letters on Black background: As per AMA rule book recommendations. 2.The rule with the mandatory penalty of 2 positions docked for background infractions has been deleted since it is no longer applicable. Use of the borrowed bike form and a maximum of three uses of this form for those times when the number on your race bike is different from your assigned number remains in effect. All other discipline rules were approved as submitted to AMA. Changes were approved by the executive committee. The updated rulebook is available on our website at www.armca.org. In other district business we are actively reviewing our year end awards bids we have several to choose from this year that should be finalized within the next 2 months. We have a new road club that was voted in at the June meeting an they are promoting a charity ride for

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... August. The MS River Road Ride. They raise big money for a good cause. Get the road bike cleaned up and ready to roll. This is an overnight ride and is really fun. It is nice to see a return of the road contingent. This past weekend was the North Central Regional Qualifier for Loretta Lynn’s held at Spring Creek. Congratulations to the Minnesota racers that qualified. We have a good contingent of racers that qualified and I know they will represent us well. Our off-road events have been going well some of the events have been a bit tougher than usual this year due to the excessive amount of rain we have had. That hasn’t stopped the racers from showing up and taking command of the elements and showing nature they can’t be stopped. Knock on wood, legislatively things have been reasonably peaceful, this is always good for our sport. The more we stay off the radar with them the better. Thats it for this month with the big news being the modification to our rules. It has been many years since this has happened. We still have many events to go this season and at some point it should dry out for us. In the meantime keep on riding every chance you get. Hope to see you on the tracks, trails, and roads of Minnesota. Mike

Kingstad would find a way to stay ahead of a hard charging Blume, but it was not without a fight. The two clawed their way ahead of the field and held their positions to the end of the race. Mellberg and Denman battled with Kyler Kocher for third place. As the race went on, Denman found his way past Mellberg for an eventual third place finish, with Kocher having a solid fifth place. Moto two brought energy to the gate drop as a nice start from Blume propelled him into the lead. He held strong ahead of the class, and eventually gapped second place rider Kingstad to grab himself a 2-1 overall. Kingstad earned a second overall going 1-2. The battle for third was again intense, as Mellberg found his way into third, with Denman and Zach Shaha following him. Mellberg put a little distance behind him to take third overall going 4-3. A surprise pass from Shaha put him into the fourth position, although it would not be enough to pass Denman for the overall. Denman went 3-5 for fourth overall, ahead of Shaha with a 7-4 for fifth.

The weekend was almost too short lived, but it was entertaining none the less. The classes were full of action at CMJ Raceway. With the skies opening up and a plentiful amount of riders, it turned out to be a spectacle to watch. Hope to see everyone at the beautiful facility next year!

GP Racing in the LaSalle Mud LaSalle, Illinois - May 31 Photos by Ryder Photography

I

n this day an age of cancelling events due to weather the Midwest Off-Road Riders club has started off their short existence with some refreshing “new” old ideas. This weekend it was a wet one just like it's been for many weekends prior. The club and property owner have a little old school in them. They decided at 5pm on Saturday, in the rain to run the event, the words “rain or shine” is a term you don't hear today. Sj Sehgi and the family farm property which looks like a golf course when mowed. Lee Orme and the MORR group have made a pretty solid partnership to offer two of the best GP races so far this spring. Grass track... well the start of practice the whole place was green and we got to rip it up, add a few sand traps you could imagine it was a golf course, but in this case the “sand” was a little smelly. Over 150 entries showed up to brave the elements only to find out that all the grass track and motocross track sections were

basically perfect. The woods trail, not so much as it developed into some ruts from hell, which had smaller ruts to use as they were burned in throughout the day. With the National HS in MI cancelling many riders on their way home stopped in and found out you don’t have to drive to MI to have a great and fun race day! Motocrossers were well represented and the normal woods guys showed up, as it was the only race around with a few trees. 14 classes 10 total motos makes for a 5.5 hour program starting at 10am, done at 3:30. The riding one class and getting a full hour of ride time has started to catch on. The A class had sixteen entries, Jon Six, Adam Bonneur, Austin Wells, Ryan Smith , and up and comer Cody Barnes were here just to name off a few. Motocross rider, Johnathan Six worked up a huge lead in the first moto and never looked back. Bouncing off the rev limiter in a “Barcia” type riding style he pretty much schooled the class in moto one. Bonneur, Wells, Robinson and Barnes were freight training in the top five about twenty sec-

onds behind. Barnes made it be known that just because he is young and new to the class, he can play with the big boys and he did that well. Second moto looked like a repeat of the first. Six took off again, pulling a pretty good lead, but then on lap two he headed back to the pits. When asked what happened, he replied “duuude I smoked a tree and tacoed my radiator”. Six’s day was done, so that left Bonneur and Wells to duke it out. Barnes starting pushing in the mix as well. Wells bobbles a little, Barnes pounced and Bonneur now was comfortable with a nice lead. The class was tossed around overall score wise as Moss, Vore, Robinson, Six and Ryan all having some issues through the day to make them DNF. Sixteen riders in A, with no purse, great to see. Some overviews of the day; twentyfour total +30 riders, +40, +50 had sixteen each, and the biggest class of the day was C class with twenty. The top seven in C class, all on two strokes! Speedy Pete Laubmeier trucked down from WI to win the +40 class, with Randy

Southard and Eric Wheelwright filling out the podium. Shawn VanAlsburg from the Tri-City club and will be working up their GP’s won the +50 class with Wally Mika and Tony Robinson giving chase. MORR had a great season, two events, which proved do be some of the best GP racing, heck racing of any kind around. Quality ridership, great location, and solid flowing mx/ grass track/ woods layout made all the riders smile when the day was over. Lee Orme stated “sure am glad we stuck it out and held the event, the course worked in great and racing was excellent”. Sunset Ridge ATV National

Pro class winner Chad Wienen before the rain came down in his motos.

Walnut, Illinois - June 13 By Josh Rud, More photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

T

he ATV Motocross Pro National Championship made its way through Sunset Ridge on the weekend of June thirteenth. The series stays on the mid to east coast for the ten rounds, hitting up a majority of the National Motocross tracks as well as Loretta Lynn’s to end the year in August. The two day event mixes pro racing with a full amateur schedule that offers 39 classes run over two days. This weekend was certainly interesting with riders coming in on Thursday for practice to be held on Friday. The rain once again put practice off on Friday, and the track had quite a few lakes to traverse on the infield come Saturday’s racing. The track itself on Saturday started out pretty muddy, but the sand at Sunset Ridge handles it well, as it didn’t take long before the conditions were perfect. The sun came out in the afternoon and you actually got a little dust in a few spots - that was until it started pouring wildly late in the day. The second pro moto was run fully in the mud, with no rider being recognizable aside from the man in the lead. Riders following the series on the amateur side are coming from far and near for the event, with some local riders putting in 12

great efforts this weekend. In Open B two Illinois riders topped the podium. Drake Koelling came out for a win taking first in both motos followed by Payden Lingle on the Honda, grabbing second overall. We also saw Zack Zaczmarzyk (IL), Kory Blake (WI) and Brandon Cesaroni (IL) in

the top 10 for the day. Open B was one of the classes with their first moto coming off the line while it was still actively pouring out. This certainly made things interesting as there was no time to prepare for the mud. 450B also had quite a few local riders making the top ten of the weekend. Alexander Gillette out of Wisconsin took the overall after winning both motos and Drake Koelling (IL) took second overall. Tyler Mack made the trip down from Minnesota to score a fifth. The A classes were fast as ever this weekend, with Pro Sport, 450A, and Production A all running there was impressive racing

out there! Sam Rowe (WI) had a great race in Pro Sport, taking second overall along with Calen McGinty (IL) fifth overall. 450A we saw Haedyn Mickelson out of Eyota, Minnesota taking second overall on his Honda. To finish things off for the weekend in Production A there was a great race with McGinty coming back again for another round, taking home third overall with Mickelson right behind him in fourth. Ethan Pickard and Jacob Howland both out of Illinois also put in some great laps making it in the top ten. The Pro class did both of their motos on Saturday, starting off in the morning with practice and timed qualifying, then later in the day running moto one around three and moto two around five. In the first moto Joel Hetrick out of Pennsylvania took the SSI Decals Holeshot Award and had a good lead going. Galena, Illinois native Chad Wienen got pushed wide at the start and was left in fourth as they came into the second turn. Joe Byrd and Josh Upperman were right behind Hetrick as they came down fast through the back straight. The group was very bunched up with last year’s Sunset Ridge winner Thomas Brown getting into the mix with Wienen as they charged hard

extremely muddy track ahead of them. Chad Wienen mentioned on the podium how they were scrambling to swap out a mud setup before the race started. This certainly put some pressure on the riders to get ready. The second moto dropped with Thomas Brown jumping out front for the holeshot, and never looking back. The tables really turned in the second moto as several riders had some issues out there. UpThe crowds were pumped up for the event. Smith wins Springfield Mile Springfield, Illinois - May 24 By Tim McBride

ichigan’s Bryan Smith scored the win in the GNC-1 Expert division as the rolling thunder show returned to the Illinois State Fairgrounds for round three of the AMA Grand National Championship Series. Smith controlled most of the twenty-five lap AMA Grand National and on the last

lap he was able to draft back past CNC Champion Jared Mees who took the lead going into turn three on the last lap. Brad Baker finished third aboard the factory Harley Davidson just ahead of Sammy Halbert. High winds in the area played a big role in the outcome of the race as it hindered the customary draft passing that usually takes place on every lap at the

legendary Springfield Mile. For the first half of the race an eight rider group broke away from the rest of the pack. Sammy Halbert, Willie McCoy (H-D of Wausau), Mees each took a turn holding the lead for a lap, but Smith remained the dominant force until the race was stopped due to a scary crash involving Johnny Lewis on his Ducati. Lewis was forced to lay his bike down at speed on the front straight when his triple clamps broke. He walked away with an injured hand and would not make the restart. On the second time around Smith grabbed the lead and held it with Mees, Baker, Halbert in tow as they separated themselves from the rest of the field. Smith controlled the four rider pack until Mees made his bid for the lead on the last lap going into turn three. Smith however performed a textbook slingshot draft maneuver and crossed the finish line .136 seconds ahead of Mees to score his fifth consecutive mile victory. “The draft was exaggerated” explained race winner Smith afterward. “Instead of coming up a little bit, it was like my bike was on nitrous, at least it was for me. To keep out front you had to have a good horse.” Third place finisher Baker agreed, “The wind was so strong that when I got past the Grandstand it almost knocked me off the bike! Brian was able to push his way through, so we followed along.” RESULTS GNC-1: 1.Brian Smith 2.Jared Mees 3.Brad Baker 4.Sammy Halbert 5.Willie McCoy 6.Henry Wiles 7.Kenny Coolbeth RESULTS GNC-2: 1.Davis Fisher 2.Jamison Minor 3.Nick Armstrong 4.Brandon Wilhelm 5.Dan Bromley 6.Ryan Varnes 7.Dalton Gauthier

Kamm Tops Pine Ridge ProAm

Kody Kamm doesn’t come out to race all that often, but he is a regular at Pine Ridge, and today topped both of the ProAm classes.

Athelstane, Wisconsin - May 24 By Cody Wills

A

nother race season is upon us here at Pine Ridge and the best way to kick it off is with the Spring Classic Pro-Am presented by Southeast Sales. This has become an annual event at Pine Ridge, and you see families have formed their Memorial Day traditions with coming to race at the raceway. The Pine Ridge crew has developed a really fantastic way to make the weekend warriors plan their weekend from Friday to Monday, starting with camping Friday night, open practice Saturday followed by racing Sunday. You don’t have to be in a hurry to get home because they will let you camp Sunday as well. Plenty of lakes in the area for that perfect way to cool off after a long day of riding. This weekend was one of excitement with all the heavy hitters showing up for a little of that pro-am cash! The Sportsman class was one of the biggest classes of the day with thirty-six entries. There’s no better feeling then going 1-1 in a class of that size and Tyler Lowe did just that with fast guys like Colton Greaves and Colin Hass making a return to racing after taking some time off. Jacob Lepak put in a consistent ride of the class finishing 6-4. Greaves and Hass bat18

tled for second overall with Greaves pulling that off going 3-2, beating and Hass (2-5). Cody Jones rounded out the top five. Another dominating performance took place in the 85Jr class as Haiden Waelchli made quick work to take the lead in each moto, and ride strong and solid till the end. Hayden Anderson and Rocco Gravedoni duked it out for second with Anderson getting the 3-2 scores and Gravedoni having to settle for third. The +40 class is becoming a faster and faster every year. More and more riders seem to be staying with the sport and you see guys that are returning from when they

rode A class years ago. Today seemed like a stacked A class from years ago with guys like Rod Van Eperen, Darin Dionne, Tom Kalies, Jason Heindl, Doug Forstner, and Wayne Welzien filled the class amongst others. A Johnny “scooter” Greaves sighting the day before made me think this could have been just the all-star class of the day, but Johnny was just on hand to spectate. Van Eperen dominated the class going 1-1 and new comer Dionne went 32, picking up second overall ahead of Kalies. Jason Heindl picked up fourth and Bryan Rusch rounded out the top five. Open A was looking to be a battle, Vaughn Mays has got the Pine Ridge sand figured out, showing he was going to be a force to be reckoned as he got out front early in the first moto. He looked solid on his Southeast Sales Kawasaki, but the other Southeast Sales rider of Kody Kamm was determined to show that his wins here over the past few years were no fluke and if you were going to win you were going to have to go through him first. In the first moto Kamm worked his way past Mays and checked out from there. The real battle grew behind him. Mays started to feel the pressure from Dylan Ziolkowski, and the battle went on till the last lap. Mays rode really well and held on all the way. Moto two was a bit of the same except Mays didn’t get as good of start and handed second to Ziolkowski who would end second overall. Mays picked up third as Kamm went 1-1. Another very impressive ride came from Kyle Hameister, as he showed the speed to hang with the fastest guys, and not just for a couple laps. Hameister made his moves to pick up fourth in both motos and fourth overall.

Moto one of 250A looked like it was going to be similar to Open A with Kamm and Mays going 1-2. David Watzka showed an impressive ride picking up third in that moto followed by Sportland2 rider Justin Wolf and Hameister. The second motos were Mays enemy today as a fall put him back to seventh and Wolf and Hameister would benefit. Wolf ended up going 4-2 for second overall ahead of Hameister’s 4-3 for thir, and Watzka (3-6). The rain started to fall towards the end of the day ever so slightly, but what a weekend we had. The rain only helped, providing the riders at the end of the day (myself included) with that perfect northwoods soil. Kody Kamm proved he was unstoppable, which he has done time and time before. With over 450 entries it’s proven that Pine Ridge Raceway is the place to be on Memorial Day weekend. Missed it? Don’t worry, it all goes in repeat on Labor day weekend so make sure you don’t miss that. Action Plentiful at Megacross Mendota, Illinois - June 6 By Josh Rud, More photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

egacross continued on June sixth with many battles to keep everyone at the edge of the track spectating. The Midwest has certainly been receiving lots of rain this season, with races being cancelled all over the area. Luckily this Saturday was in the clear. The track was in great shape all night with a lot of ruts building in nicely. As always the crew out at Megacross was out in the early hours getting everything perfect for the night, and it didn’t require much

touchup once things were underway. The new sand section was dialed in perfectly, offering a lot of passing opportunities. With it right before the finish, you never knew how a race was going to end, until the riders actually crossed the checkered flag. The night started with the Supermini riders. Off the line Conner Burger jumped out front for the lead with Nolan Dickinson and Tommy Fortune right

next to him into the first corner. Heading through the table tops Dickinson took over and then started stretching the lead while Jonah Geistler was fighting for third, passing Fortune several times to get passed back. Pushing hard to the third lap For-

tune got to the inside of Burger before the whoops with Geistler following right behind as they both speed into the next corner solidifying their positions. Fortune was on a charge for the front, and with two laps remaining he reeled in Dickinson, but was unable to make a pass. They crossed the line with Dickinson, Fortune, and Geistler taking the top three for the night. The gates were extremely loud with 250C holding twenty riders, all ready to battle it out. When the gate dropped Tanyon Palka got the holeshot followed by Justin Carr and Charles McCook on his MXStuff4U Yamaha. Heading into the whoops Cody Slamans took the inside line, passing three riders, moving all the way up to lead with Carr and Palka settling in behind him. Into the tabletops McCook started his charge to take over third, then going hot into the next turn to bump Carr back to third. On the last lap McCook chipped his way around Slamans to take over the lead on the straight after fighting hard the entire race. They came across the line with McCook grabbing the win, Slamans in second and Carr third. Things kept moving throughout the night as 65 Beginner came to the line to start a crazy race. Into the first turn Coleton Elliot took the lead with Peter Parenti and Landon Lee right behind him. Around the next corner Lee was able to get inside to take over second as Kody Shetler followed him through the whoops to pass Parenti for third. With Elliot still out front, Parenti came back down the straight getting hard on the throttle to take back third. Moving into the back triple Lee got on the inside before the jump to take over the lead as the pack got bunched up once again. Heading into the sand chicane Parenti went outside 22

the pack and cut quickly inside to pass everyone from third to the lead leaving Lee in second and Shetler following his line moving back into third. The group stayed together the rest of the race as Parenti fought off several attempts by Lee for the lead. The race came to a close with Parenti taking the win followed by Lee and Shetler. Another big class tonight was 250B with fourteen quick riders. They came off the line with RJ Mackenzie cutting in from the outside to take the holeshot, putting Trevor Hayes and Lucas Hayes right behind him.

Coming into the second turn Mackenzie got caught up on the pole, handing the lead to Trevor Hayes as Austin Beaty moved into second. Mackenzie got things moving to keep third as they jumped into the whoops section. On a mission through the back section of the track Mackenzie was able to get by Beaty to take over second and was charging towards the front. Soon enough, Robbie Hyson was mounting his charge to the front after getting caught in the start. Going into the tabletop section Hyson took over third. The next time around Trevor Hayes and Mackenzie got

Nick Blumer charging in the 250B class.

bunched up on the inside of the second corner. Hyson was able to capitalize, rushing to the outside to pass them both for the lead and didn’t look back. With the race coming down the wire Mackenzie blasted into the sand section getting by Trevor Hayes for second place. Everything was as exciting as ever out at Megacross with so many good races going on. There’s a lot coming up in the future out at Megacross with the return of the Endurocross section and more pitbike action as well. Be sure to check out Megacross this summer, its slipping by fast already. Great Day at Echo Valley MX Brookston, Minnesota - June 7 By Samantha Laderer

O

n June 7th riders from all over Minnesota, Wisconsin and even Canada returned to Echo Valley Motocross for the nineth race of the District 23 season. Even though rain was predicted in the forecast that didn’t stop the racers or spectators from attending what turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day. Many of us have figured out, you simplycan’t trust the forecast. Although it did rain Saturday evening and continued to lightly sprinkle throughout the night, Sunday morning the clouds cleared, letting that sun shine. The moisture the track received Saturday helped make it a great day of racing. First on the line were the +25 classes. Jeremy Hullett, a +25A rider was pinched off on the start and made a few mistakes on the first lap, but by the second lap he got his ducks in a row. He quickly made the pass for the lead, and from there was

Avery Long going to second overall in 85cc 9-12.

able to pull away for the win ahead of Chas Kadlec and Rick Amatuzio. Second moto Hullett was sore due to a crash in his Open A moto, but that didn’t stop him from getting a great jump out of the gate to pull the holeshot. “After the holeshot, I had a clear track to ride my own race and not eat anybody’s roost,” said Hullett. This time out, Amatuzio put his Yamaha across for second, earning second overall for the day as well. 14-24B had the spectators on their feet. It wasn’t only a battle up front, but throughout the whole group. Ryder Hanninen crashed on the first lap while avoiding another rider. Having to battle his way back to the front wasn’t easy for him, especially with Tommy Coon, Nick Schnagl, Travis Richards, and Trent Wittwer pulling away at the front of the class. Hanninen managed to catch up and finish third behind winner Richards and second place Coon. In the second moto, Hanninen got a better start and went on to finish second behind Schnagl (7-1), resulting in a first overall. Battles didn’t just stir up with the big bikes, but also with the kids on the 85s. The top several riders in the 85cc 9-11 class have been racing together since the beginning on their 50’s and 65’s, so all have a comparable speed. However, Avery Long pulled away with the lead in

both motos, leaving his buddies behind. Mason Grecula, Curtis Biorn, and Tyler Van Atta battled it out for the top four positions. Grecula (2-2) managed to hold off both Biorn (3-3) and Van Atta (4-4) to finish with a second place. Looking at all the 85cc classes, this was the largest turnout that Echo Valley had seen in a while. “It’s good to see more young riders getting into this sport, makes for some good completion in all classes.” said Amber Kadlec, daughter of Teri Olesiak, track owner. Brady Karolevitz had yet another clear track in front of him in the 50cc 4-8 Open class. Some people at the track refer to this kid as the next Ryan Dungey, as he sports his little Red Bull KTM with Dungey’s number five plates. If anyone is to listen to the comments of the other riders and spectators while watching Karolevitz, one will hear not only the ooo’s and ahhh’s of this 50 rider’s skills, as well as comments such as ‘did the 50 rider just clear the jump?’. Karolevitz pulled away in both motos leaving the other riders in his class. At the end of the day, with the sun still shining, anyone would have had to agree, it was a good day of racing at Echo Valley. With over 200 entries, and the campsites almost filled it brought a smile to track crew’s faces. “I love seeing the gates filled. When they all take off it gives me

an adrenaline rush just watching,’ says Olesiak. Her daughter and her, as well as the whole crew at Echo Valley would like to thank the everyone for making it such a great weekends. Inaugural D17 Sidell Trials

Vintage class rider Doug May and Annmarie Cross

Sidell, Illinois - Trials June 7 By Liz Jeffries

T

he sun shone bright on Sunday morning over the farm belonging to Mike and Annmarie Cross. This round of the season was being held on a 40 acre horse farm that is also the home of Crosswinds Equine Rescue. The trials today was also being held as a fundraiser for the rescue to help them continue in their mission in helping emotionally and physically abused horses, healing them so they can find a second chance in life. Mike and Annmarie actually hosted a ‘fun ride’ on Saturday, allowing people to ride all the areas where the sections were going to be, before the sections were marked, making it fun to try to figure out where the lines where going to be. The sections were marked that night, in preparation for the ride the next

morning. And, of course a bon fire Saturday night, everybody gathered around sharing storied, crashes, and highlights of the day. Sunday, the ride started at 10, and we were blessed to have non-rider volunteers to check the sections. The loop was a mowed path through the pasture, with only two small creek crossings. There was also a shorter ‘beginner loop’ for the women and youth classes, making it so they didn’t have to worry about crossing the creek (the women/ youth classes only were required to ride four loops of four sections each). Three of the sections were up near the pits, making it very accessible to the spectators who had come to watch. The sections themselves had everything and anything to throw at all the riders. All the sections had log crossings for most if not all of the classes. The sections out in the pasture sported steep off-cambers, tight twisting lines, and rocks. One of the sections by the house required riders to cross oddly shaped chunks of concrete. And true to the horse farm atmosphere, in Section 1 the expert and champ riders had to ride over huge round hay bales. The threat of rain held off, and with the help of the checkers, the

loops wound down fast, and with only two DNF’s the group finally gathered for awards. Bryce Knepp took first place in youth, which had three riders today. Anna Rushbrook took the win for the Women’s class over Kimi Gardner. Doug May took home the trophy for the Vintage Class, and Jeff Franklin won the Senior class. Matt Dissell once again topped the Knobby class. Ethan Knepp took first in Novice, as did Scott Heininger in the twelve person Intermediate class. He tied for first with Jason Knepp but Jason took the first dab. Adam Hare won the Advanced class with only ten points, and Mike Cross took Expert with nine. And finally, Greg Sassi took the win for the Champ class, finishing the day with 62 points. Until next time, Good Riding! In the Open A main event, heat one winner Rath took the win over heat two winner Ryan Bruggeman, with Bryan Skaudis finishing third. The +25 main saw Rath win over Scott Williams and Justin Berhow. Heat winner Skaudis was in contention for another strong finish when late in the race he crashed heavily in the high speed sweeper leading to turn five. O

nce again, rain threatened once again to cancel the first race of the season for Aztalan short track, and a brief shower did postpone the evening’s program. With the help of a few folks and their cars, trucks and vans, the newly resurfaced track was dried out, repacked and made ready for racing! Because of the weather, time was of the essence so the

heat races were cut down in laps and the program order for the main events was revised to fit as many as possible before either the rain returned, or the track hit its evening curfew. The Vet class main started with #57, Ben Carlson (Honda) getting the holeshot. The laps to follow had Brian Frandsen, being challenged by Jim Kirschbaum who successfully moved into second. On the last lap Patrick Stemper stepped up to challenge for third, taking it from Frand-

sen after he got loose a couple of times. Clayton Vanmoos, #5 on his Honda took off in the 250cc class in front of Jim Kirschbaum and Dan Vanmoos. Clayton took a commanding lead while “Dad” Vanmoos challenged Kirschbaum for second place. Looking back over his shoulder on the last lap, Clayton saw Kirschbaum distantly still in second. The Open class had Michael Van Langen on his Honda, flying off the line to take the lead, then bobbling in the next lap to send Clayton Vanmoos to the front, with Parker Lang in third place. That order held until the last lap, when Parker bobbled and opened the door for Jacob Walter on his Honda to move in for a third place finish. Chatting with some of the riders after the program, their thoughts about the condition of the resurfaced track were positive! Consistently smooth, held together. Thumbs up!!! Now if we can get mother nature to work with us a little, we’ll get in a full night of always fun Aztalan racing. Fun continues at Woodstock

Tanyon Parker on his way to winning 250C-1.

Woodstock, Illinois - June 5 McHenry County Fairgrounds

T

he first Friday of June delivered another excellent night for racing... no rain, decent temps, and an ever growing turnout in Woodstock, IL. Fast paced Stadium racing under the lights on a beautiful Friday night, what else could be asked for? The Woodstock MX crew made a few refinements to the new track, and they all worked well. In addition, they moved the vending area to join the spectator grandstands, so now fans can get to the display bikes and such. Also present tonight, the Red Bull team with their mobile sound stage, and courtesy sample handout girls. Little things that just added even more to the already fun event. The Vet riders kicked off the racing, with Wind Lake, WI’s Jeffery Koepp out front. During the first two laps, James Wehrman, Jeremy Witek and Christopher Dicicco were fighting over second. Koepp was leading yet when heat race winner Witek broke free of the others to lock down second. As they crossed the finish line, Dicicco was just ahead of Wehrman for third, as Jason Haessig put his Kawasaki across for fifth in the eleven rider +30B class. Reid Runkel led all the way for the 85Sr class win. Clayton Slamans worked up to finish second, passing Nick Swanson in 34

CYCLE USA, July 2015

Dicicco held on to third from that point as Patrick Lyon and Chase Blazek worked up to finish fourth and fifth. Carpenter rode smoothly and with perfection out front for the win. Next, another dozen 50Sr riders put on their own show, with Wisconsin’s Benjamin Blazek and Illinois’ Preston Zollers continuing their contest for class supremacy. Blazek had made a mistake in the earlier heat race, allowing Zollers a clean run out front for the win ahead of Peter Parenti. When the gate fell in the main, Blazek got the holeshot, just ahead of Zollers. The two were once again close all moto, with Blazek holding the smallest of leads. Riley Busse also had a better start, and ran in third. Blazek never gave up the lead, pushed by Zollers right to the end. A ways behind Busse, there was a lot of back and forth racing, much of it from Reilly Crisp and Parenti. Crisp managed to hold fourth as they crossed the finish, just ahead of Parenti, Bryce Ostler and Travis McClellan.

Brody Spiekerman took a shot at Swanson on the last lap, having made the pass moUtech had a good mentarily, only to slide Erik night, including a out in a tight corner, and second place in 250A. give the spot back, and finish in fourth. In the 85Jr class, if you saw the heat race, it played out as a perfect repeat in the main. Patrick Murphy continues to top the class on his #94 KTM. Wyatt Murphy got into second in the second corner off the start and led Anthony Edgerton and Lucas Geistler through each lap to the checkers. The 50cc classes continued to showcase impressive turnouts. In 50Jr, fifteen little guys hit the track, to see the very quick Mikah Carpenter pull another holeshot, then his “go hide” moves. With Carpenter pulling away, Kain Jennison worked his way forward from sixth, up to second by the start of the third lap. Dylan

Pit Bikes are a big deal, tonight with nineteen entries.

The 250B class delivered a good race again. Chad West won the heat race with a pretty good lead, and looked poised to repeat in the main after taking the holeshot. This time though, he had Kenosha, WI’s Nickolas Lorenz all over his rear fender. Lorenz struggled in the earlier heat race, working up to fifth. He was now pushing West at every corner, then on the third lap the pass came. Rock River Yamaha/ Lorenz Excavating/ SID Decals backed Lorenz. “I got into second right away, then worked on the leader for two laps trying to find a way around. He made a few little mistakes that let me stick with him, and then I had the opening for the triple and took it. I was hitting it in practice so I just needed an open line.” Pulling the spectator triple was the first time we recall seeing anyone outside of the A class make the leap. Lorenz hit it just right, the one time for the pass and held the lead to the end of the moto. West had a gap behind him as he finished second ahead of Tristin Toney, Jarred Berggren, and the eleven other riders. 250C had twenty-five riders, so the class was split into two divisions. In Division one, Johnson, IL’s Bailey Stefka made his return to racing a good one. Winning the heat race, then pulling a gap on everyone in the main, he led every lap of both races. Stefka after the win, “I just got this bike yesterday, so I am still getting comfortable on it. It is fun to be back out here racing again. I love racing on Friday nights again, it brings back great memories. I haven’t raced in six or seven years. I missed racing a lot, and with this being

close I wanted to get back into it again.” In the second 250C division, Tanyon Palka put his Suzuki out front by the second lap to take the win ahead of Cody Getz on his Kawasaki. #144, Palka after the win, “I needed to get a good start today, and did that. Once that happens the shot to win is there. In the main I just pushed the two guys that were ahead of me, and when they made mistakes or fell I moved past. I like this racing, it is a lot more tight than outdoor tracks, but it is a lot of fun, and the track is great.” In both of the A classes, Travis Sewell put his Woodstock KTM out front and was never really challenged. Behind him, Erik Utech and Vaughn Mays put on a show, eventually each finishing second in one of the classes, Utech in 250A, Mays in Open. It was another really good night of racing, and just plain fun being part of it all at the McHenry County fairgrounds. Most of July is a quiet month for the Woodstock crew, but they return late in the month with two big events. First, they bring stadium mx back to the Lake County Fair on the 29th, then holding a D17 Bonus Points round back in Woodstock on the 31st. As sad as it sounds to hear it put this way, that weekend actually marks the half way point of their season... so if you haven’t been getting out enough, let this be your reminder of how quick time is flying by! Go, get out and enjoy the racing.

LTM Beats the Rain Casey, Illinois - May 31 By James Pinckard

R

ound three of the Fly Showdown Series and round one of the Illini Series were hosted by Lincoln Trail Motorsports in Casey, IL. The Bomber track was in great shape for practice on Saturday, before it started to rain. As people loaded or made camp for the night the rain got worse! It was so bad that the roads at LTM prevented you from even being able to leave. A storm then blew in and took out many EZ-UPS. When the storm passed everyone checked the damage and looked at the standing water and thought there was no way we would race. Sunday morning people started coming and we were told the races were on. One of the racers who was at the track all night walked over to the track and came back and said “You’re not going to believe this, but the track is perfect!” In fact it was the best the track has been all year, and they were right - I wouldn’t have believed it. The Illini series brings north riders to

LTM because the other races take place in their area. It also brings A riders because they have a guaranteed purse. In the 250A

class, Yamaha rider Ty Tyrrell took the first moto straight to the bank, taking the moto win. Honda rider Branden Brill took

second with Matthew Bell third. In the second moto things were all shook up except for Tyrrell being out front, counting his cash. Bryten Brill who finished fourth in the first moto had a much better second moto and finished second overall as result of his efforts. Third for the second moto was the Suzuki of Bell which put him in a tie with Bryten Brill, with the tie breaker going to Brill. The Open A class again had their eye on the prize. Tyrell might as well have been driving an armored bank truck. Tyrell picked up where he left off in the 250 class winning both motos. In the first moto he was ahead of Branden Brill and Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond. In the second moto Bryten Brill took second for the moto but after finishing fifth in the first moto, good enough for third overall. His brother Branden Brill finished third for the moto and second overall. After Open A, Cory Deadmond was on the line in the +30A class along with 30B riders. Deadmond showed the field what kind of speed it takes to ride the A class. Deadmond took both moto wins over Husky rider Shawn Kelley. The +30B class last year was always one of the biggest classes. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Tom Kennedy took the win with Yamaha rider Kris Schulte second and Aaron Carter third. In the second moto Carter put his green machine out for the moto win. Kennedy took second for the moto and that was enough to give him the overall for the day. Cory Wallace rode HARD!

Caleb Hetzler charging to second in 250C.

The biggest class of the day was 250C. Twenty-two riders made the gate which is amazing as the Beginner class had twelve riders who would have also been in the class. Even with that many riders the class was easy as 1-2-3. Kawasaki rider Evan Faucett won both motos and took the overall. Yamaha rider Caleb Hetzler finished second with Nick Pingel third in both motos. o if you have ever been to Wittenberg MX facility and know your history, the facility sits on an old golf driving range. It was a good thing Scotty had his tractor and equipment in tip top condition because as haulers started rolling in Friday night, Scotty was put to work pulling rigs out of the mud in the parking lot from all the recent rains. With almost 300 entries showing up for the double header weekend it was a full house. Saturday morning riders were treated to a revamped track that had some changes. The rollers, big plateau jump and a few other spots got a makeover. Twenty-five riders lined up for the 250C class, and in moto one it was Bryce Thomas from Sturgeon Bay, WI who took the checkered flag for the moto win. Beau Ertl, Ben Kurtzweill, Riley Rew, and Gavin Burch rounded out the top five. Throughout the moto, everyone in the top ten was really battling for position and no one was willing to give up any positions. Moto two saw Ertl and Rew out front with Kurtzweill and Jacob Mellberg giving chase ahead of Lukas Erdmann in fifth. First moto winner Thomas ended up with a dnf, so the overall was wide open. At the checkers it was Rew with the moto win just ahead of Ertl. Kurtzweill was a

1. Kurtzweill’s consistency earned him third overall. 65cc 7-11 had seventeen entries, and it was Cole Godfrey nabbing the moto one holeshot with Elijah Tetzlaff hot his rear fender. Isaac Therrien ran in third by himself, with a battle behind him between Owen Haseleu and Luke Vanlyssel. Mid moto, Tetzlaff made a pass on Godfrey for the lead, but Godfrey stayed close and gave him a run. Moto two saw Godfrey and Tetzlaff out front again, pushing each other hard. Easton Block had a better start and found himself running in third. Vanlyssel and Aiden Price rounded out the top five. This moto, Godfrey wouldn’t give up the lead and held off Tetzlaff for the win and the overall. Block went 6-3 for third overall. The Open A class had nine riders, and it was Colton Karl who pulled the holeshot in moto one to lead wire to wire. Chase Nystrom had a good start and was in second on the first lap. Cloughs tough at Spring Creek Red Wing, Minnesota - May 24-25 By Rolfe Otterness

T

he Clough boys were out in full force for the Memorial Day Weekend and had a strong run at the traditional double-header race. Jayden Clough took three overalls in 85cc classes and James grabbed a couple of second place trophies on Sunday, and two wins on Monday. Spring Creek was groomed up nicely for the weekend and there were a bunch of riders on hand, eager for action. However, ol’ Ma Nature decided to water the track (for free) and after a few motos, a light rain began to fall. Conditions started to deteriorate and eventually the track was rerouted to avoid the steeper hills. But the first set of motos were completed and thus a chance for motocross glory was gifted to all. Out of the 500 plus entries, there were a few others besides the Clough boys who proved equal to the challenge – such as Gage Steberg in the mini classes, Matt Mullen running +25B and 30B, and Henry Miller stomping the A classes. Joe Kidd blitzed off the line to lead the Vet B class around turn one, but it wasn’t long before he found trouble and dropped back in the pack. Wade Hasse took over and found a bit of a gap by the end of lap one. Matt Mullen was into second by the end of the lap and started to erode the lead of Hasse in a steady manner. On the last lap Mullen drew alongside the leader as they climbed the hill just before the finish and although Hasse tried to defend his position, Mullen swept by past to lead as they hit the turn to the finish line tabletop, sealing the win. In the Junior class, Jamison Duclos led early with pressure by Luke Hempen. Duclos found the slippery track to give him a spot of trouble and dropped back a bit as Hempen got by and also Mateo Johnson. Things settled a bit at that point with the track getting slippery and the top three spread out a bit but held their positions to the checkered. Gage Steberg is always a threat in his 85cc classes, and jumped into the lead as 85 9-12 class was released onto the slickened circuit. Jayden Clough looked like he might mount a challenge to the Iowan, but Steberg gained a second or two per lap. They were cutting times quite a bit quicker than the rest of the pack and at moto’s end were about twenty seconds clear of third place rider Conner Klemen-

hagen. Gavin Janovsky secured fourth place with Avery Long a bit back for fifth. Open A looked to be talent-packed with Iowa’s Teddy Maier, Henry Miller, Joe

Peron, Jake Loberg and others on the line in the thirty-two rider field. Miller led through turn one with Maier in tow and before they made a lap Maier charged by for the lead. Miller took stock of the situation and about three quarters of the way through the next lap took over the lead as they raced down the hill after taking the triple jump. Miller had the track dialed and started to build a lead over Maier while Joe Peron and then Jake Loberg got by Luke Peters in the early laps. Miller went on for the win with 7 or 8 seconds over Maier while Peron and Loberg finished a pretty good distance back. Logan Marzahn moved up a bit to take nice fifth place finish. With Sunday’s incessant rain showers bringing the day to an

released. Some notable rides on Sunday were the 1-1 motos by Nick Jackson to take 250A, Henry Miller cleaning up in 14-24A and Open A plus Gage Fisher taking the win in Schoolboy. With the sun shining and the track shaping up through the day, it turned out to be another great Memorial Day Weekend at Spring Creek.

Arkansaw Hare Scrambles

Some of the carnage at the first big uphill before entering the woods.

Arkansaw, Wisconsin - June 7 By Keith McKenna keithmckenna.zenfolio.com

istrict 23 made a jump across the Mighty Mississippi River to hold Round 3 of the 2015 Hare Scramble Series in conjunction with District 16 of Wisconsin. The District was holding an off-road race at the Arkansaw Cycle Park again for the first time in years. The racers were looking forward to having the new venue replace one of the races that is typically held in Stone Lake, WI. For the uninitiated, the Arkansaw Cycle Park is located in a long narrow valley floor between two bluffs. That means that the flattest part of the course was the motocross track itself, although, the MX track is not considered flat by any standard. So, that meant much climbing up and much heavy braking on the way back down. Not a problem right, as the course surface was in perfect condition (on Saturday evening). Well, at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday the rains came, and came, and came, until 5:30. Not what anyone wanted to see. Racers arriving at the track approached with trepidation, wondering if the race could even be run after two inches of precipitation? The sun was breaking through the clouds by 8 am, and it looked like the course just might dry out (for the later races, at least). For the unfortunate souls 46

that had to race first though, the going was gonna be tough, REAL tough! The first classes to hit the mud were the Premier (85cc 2-str to 150cc 4-str) riders, the Peewee class (65cc) and the girls class. I viewed some GoPro footage after the race which seemed to suggest that clear vision for the riders lasted on average... eleven seconds! This, in a one hour event. The mud had riders pulling tear-offs midway through the first turn. It was going to be a long race for the ones that were able to complete the whole hour. The greasy moto track had radiators clogged and engines overheating and clutches burning up from the get-go! #504 KTM mounted Brady Kittock is making some waves this year in the Premier class. By lap four Kittock built up a

five minute lead, at which point he dialed it back a notch to conserve energy, but still won the race over a smooth riding Austin McCoy, also on a KTM. Jayme French held third place for a KTM sweep. Just as stated earlier, for the Peewee racers, the slippery greasy course was just too much, for all but one Ryder Gerulli on his KTM. Gerulli rode like lightning! He remained on pace with the more senior riders on their 85cc bikes, and was the only PeeWee rider to finish the event. For the Macro/ Micro class, (the tiniest racers) the plan was to run them on a small loop in the infield of the moto track in the grass and have them cross the moto track to get from one section of their course to another. The muddy motocross track proved to be a test of the tiny wheeled, 50cc pilots, even in small doses. The racers took all of it in stride and soldered on for as many laps as they could. In the end, in the Micro class, the Honda XR50 ridden by Boede Wallner was able to cover

the course in seven laps compared to KTM mounted Max Munoz’s second place five lap effort. Ruslan Johnson finished third. In the Junior class, the brothers of Elijah and Roan Buchholz finished in the top spots in that order, with Brady Kittock coming off of an earlier win to finish in third. The top five spots were an all KTM affair. For the start of the C class races, the course ran the moto track to the point of the uphill triple, where the course would take a sweeping left up the steep incline into the woods. The near 45 degree climb up in the terra that was soaked and slippery had a majority of the field laying on the side of the hill, getting the type of mud bath that New York socialites pay hundreds of dollars for. The C riders got all that and the chance to compete. When the Womens wave

finally got cut loose and came around the moto track to see the mass assembled at the juncture of the woods loop, the choice of weather to proceed or not was at hand. All chose to charge headlong into the mess. Up the hill they bolted, tires clawing for any available traction. #2 in the standings, Kristi Grote willed her KTM SX85 to the top of the hill with the Yamaha YZ of class leader Mary Schriener in tow. Schriener’s YZ would break traction and convert her forward momentum to rearward momentum. Down she went into a tumbling brown mess! This allowed Grote to get into the woods first, but first she would have to wait for a chance to sneak into the clogged single track into the woods. With a myriad of workers and spectators helping the trembling mass to get righted again, Schriener finally get to the woods, three

minutes in arrears of Grote. At the end of lap one, Schriener would be three minutes behind her rival. By the end of her final lap, lap two at the checkers, Schriener was fifteen seconds into first place over Grote. The third place rider and the final rider to cover the treacherous course for two laps was the #225 KTM of Miranda Tweeton. Of the 10 ladies on the line, only the top five were able to finish the race. In the 200C race, although I wasn’t able to keep track, it appears that the #667 of Cruz Wahl was able to conquer the "Giant Wall-O-Mud better than anyone else in his class on the opening lap as evidenced by his completing the first lap in 25:01 while the next closest competitor in class was Jacob Peterson with a lap time of 32:04, a full seven minutes out of first place. Peterson would make

up two minutes on Wahl on lap two and another two plus on the third and final lap. Jake Germann would pull out a bronze finish for the Blu Cru! By the time the C riders finished their races, the five miles of trail that they ran on was in prime condition for the AA, A and B races. The fastest classes had an additional two miles of trail to negotiate. A lot of the terrain for the race was run on pretty well used single track, so keeping the wheels under you was a tall order when the trail is slippery and very deeply dished out from years of use. To come out on top, the order of the day would be to ride steady and mistake free. That plan was well executed by the Suzuki mounted #637 Alex Kulzer in the 250B wave. Kulzer would strike while the iron was hot and set himself “on point” at the beginning stages and just chugged along, never to be

headed in his two hour - ten minute race. In the end Kulzer would win over second place Kurt Eisenschenk. The battle for second in 250B was an intense affair though. Nine seconds separated second from third and

four seconds separated third from fourth. Yamaha mounted Johnny Weir rounded out the podium with KTM #125 Colton Reschke just missing out on the hardware. Garrett Hanson was haulin his first laps in the Vet-A class

while Yamaha mounted Andy Storbeck kept him in sight. Then, on lap five Buddy Rudy dropped the hammer and overcame a five minute deficit to charge into first place on his Suzuki. Hanson, relegated to second place had to be

Jason McCoy leading flag to flag for a victory in the +30B class.

shocked to see Rudy disappear into the distance. In the end, Rudy would lap just fast enough to be granted a seventh lap, while time ran out for Hanson and Storbeck and the rest, as they only got to circulate six times before being shown the checkers. It seams that in the AA class, 2013 Minnesota Champion Dylan Debel really likes having the power of his 450 back. After last trying his hand at a 250 4-Stroke and finding it to be somewhat anemic, he is super happy to be back on a big Osseo Power Sports/ CheckPoint Off-Road Honda CRF450. When he is hard on the throttle racing through the woods with the bike on full boil, it sounds like the earth opening up, but no, it’s just Dylan doing what Dylan does best, that is winning races. In the first two laps, KTM rider Adam Barlow had the first place rider in his sights, but on the third lap, when the rest of the riders were beginning to fade, Debel was hitting his stride, increasing his lead. As this was a dual sanctioned event, and run in Wisconsin, there were a number of Wisconsin riders in attendance. The fastest being Jd Friebel on his Husky. It must have been an off day for Friebel, as in the end, he could only manage a fifth place finish. So the race order at the checkers was Debel, Barlow, Tyler Pogreba in third, Matt Stavish then Friebel in fifth. All in all it was a good day of racing for those that were able to persevere, but a memorable day for all. Big thanks to Arkansaw Cycle Park for the use of the facility, to all the volunteers that put countless hours putting the event together, and to spectators that got their hands dirty helping right the downed racers in the early events, and to the Straight Arrows Motorcycle Club for tackling the event!

Mees Defies adjectives at Dairyland Classic Plymouth, Wisconsin - May 29 By Bert Sumner

I

mmediately after winning the 2015 Dairyland Classic, a jubilant Jared Mees asked “has anyone done THAT before?” The defending AMA Grand National Champion had battled the elements, the new clay surface, and a rare penalty line start to claim his unprecedented sixth Dairyland Classic in seven years. And then he hopped on a plane and finished third at the Sacramento Mile the next day. Despite several showers throughout the day (including one after practice completed), the 31st Dairyland Classic roared to life a little late, but not undaunted. The fresh clay surface added in the off-season, combined with the extra moisture and wheel-packing, provided a ripple-free, tacky racing surface from pole to pole that allowed side-by-side racing all night long. Captain Chuck Calvert overcame a runner-up finish in his heat race to score a wire-to-wire win in the Spectro Oils Quad Division. Ken Reimer and pole sitter Travis Stadler rounded out the podium. Rookie Quad racer Hayden Reitz, who won the second heat race, held down second place in the final until a rear wheel came apart on the last lap, which sent him directly into the wall on the back straightaway. Reitz was uninjured; his Honda

Jared Mees said the track was the “best ever” and dominated the night’s very competitive racing.

was not so lucky. Dawson Schieffer, Clayton VonMoos, and DJ Slosser claimed the Fuel Café Amateur heat race wins, but Jacob Walter grabbed the early lead in the final ahead of Morgan Monroe, Slosser, and pole-sitter VonMoos. Parker Lange overcame a poor start to claim the third and final podium position on lap five, as VonMoos fell back with bike issues. Rick Bretl grabbed the holeshot in the West Bend H-D Vintage final ahead of Patrick Bean, Dan Lauters, and Terry Vestal. Vestal slowly worked his way forward on his Harley-Davidson XLR900, taking the runner-up spot on the fifth lap.

Mark Martinich crashed hard on the sixth lap, and the race was called complete with Bretl, Vestal, and Bean in winners’ circle. Christian Johnson grabbed the holeshot in the first GNC1/GNC2 heat race over Mees, Hunter Edwards, and Morgen Mischler. Mees made his trademark move for the lead in turn four at the end of lap three and then slowly inched away to the win. Johnson, Edwards, and Mischler all followed into their first Dairyland Classic main event. Ion Stear grabbed the holeshot in heat race #2, but Rob Pearson was past before the end of lap one, and ran off to a convincing win. Dalton Gauthier and Australian Mick Kirkness transferred

into their first Dairyland Classic final. Jeffrey Carver led Ryan Wells, Shane Vance, and Dan Mischler into the Classic from heat race #3. Carver would sit on the pole for the final. Pearson and Mees started the GNC1/GNC2 final from the penalty line and jumping Mike Vrana’s starting light. When the light did go green, Christian Johnson grabbed the holeshot, but gave way to Jeffrey Carver at the exit of turn two. Carver tried to click off as many perfect laps as he could in the early going. “I got a great start, and tried to run consistent laps”, he would recall later, “because I knew Jared was coming”. And coming he was, slicing through traffic like a man with a plane to catch. Mees was up to fifth place in four laps, and just kept climbing the charts, passing Wells for the runner-up spot on lap nine and then closing the considerable gap to the lead with ease. Mees made a clean pass out of turn four and then simply pulled away. “This is the best track we’ve had in the ten years I’ve been com-

ing here”, complimented Carver on the new clay, “but Jared is just dialed in here”. “I want to thank the fans for coming out and supporting this event”, cheered Mees from the winners’ circle. “I always try to be ‘perfect’ here, and this is a great start”. Wells finished a strong third, and the top GNC2 rider. “I was running really good… I couldn’t catch Jeff, and then Jared went by…”. Gauthier, Kirkness, Mischler, and Johnson rounded out the top seven. The night finished with the thirteenth edition of the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash For Cash. Carver started at the lead, by virtue of winning the fastest GNC1/GNC2 heat race. Directly in front, in order, sat Mees, Pearson, Wells, Kirkness, and Robbie Trienen. Kirkness led the field at the finish of lap one, with Pearson, Mees, and Trienen in tow. Mees grabbed the lead coming to the end of lap two and led the rest of the way for the most dominant performance in recent history, finishing in front of Pearson, Carver, Kirkness, Wells, and Trienen.

Morgan Monroe rode to second in the fast Amateur class.

Mees, Carver, and Pearson then grabbed the same flight to Sacramento for the Grand National mile event on Saturday, where Mees finished third on his XR750, Carver sixth on his Kawasaki 650, and Pearson missed the main by one spot on his KTM 990.

600cc 4-Stroke class. But once again a veteran rider, Andy Fortner blazed over the top in 3.360 seconds on his Kawasaki for the Senior class, setting a new fast time. Pulver, however, still had a ride coming in the Super Senior class, and delivered a stunning 3.348 second run to snatch the Fast Time award from Fortner, his second in two days. The ‘old guys’ put on a good show both days! In youth class action, Lilah

oe McGurer and Troy Camerer were triple class winners at the Central Illinois M/C night hillclimb on Saturday, May 23, with McGurer repeating the feat at the Sunday portion of the weekend double-header. McGurer’s wins came in the 250cc, 600cc and Open Stock classes both days, while Camerer claimed the wins in the 450cc, 400 Stock and 4-Stroke Quad classes Saturday night. Camerer repeated his 400 Stock and Quad class wins Sunday, but fell to third place in the 450cc class behind Matt Peters and Cody Jenner. Levi Peters was a double class winner both days, taking wins in the 125cc and 200cc classes, while Mike Pulver was a double winner Saturday night, taking the Senior and Super Senior wins. Pulver repeated his Super Senior win Sunday, but dropped to third in the Senior class behind Andy Fortner and Matt Peters. McGurer’s class winning 3.181 second time on his second run in the 600cc class appeared to be a cinch for the overall Fast Time award, overtaking Camerer, who had posted a 3.241 time to win the 450cc class. But Fast Time winners; Brodie Bennett, Michael Pulver and Andrew Fortner. Pulver once again demonstrated that old McGurer took the 65cc class win Saturisn’t always slow, as he flew his CR500 day, followed by Maria Moran and over the top in a blistering 3.140 seconds Clayson Price. Mitch Moran claimed the to take the Senior class win, and also the win Sunday followed by McGurer and Fast Time award. Jaydn Aliprandini. In Sunday action, it was much the same. Brodie Bennett was the 85Jr winner This time McGurer set the fast time at both days, followed by Lilah McGurer and 3.367 seconds on his second ride on his Maria Moran Saturday, and McGurer and KX500 to win the large and fast 600cc Mitch Moran Sunday. Brodie’s 3.483 secclass, slipping under Cody Jenner and his ond time Saturday night was good for the 3.405 second class winning time in the Youth Fast Time award at that event. 52

Little Andy Fortner ran unopposed in the 85Sr class, with his 3.224 second time good for the Youth Fast Time award at the Sunday event. Road America delivers again Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - June 1 By Gordon Lunde

T

he MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship made it’s first stop at Elkhart Lake’s 4 mile Road America road course, and from talk of the fans the show was well received. MotoAmerica is the new management body of AMA Pro Road Racing. They put together a late deal to take over from a failing Daytona Motorsports Group last fall. Even in the rush to get things organized for the 2015 season they have managed to put together a good package of rules and classes. The President of MotoAmerica is Wayne Rainey, former two-time AMA Pro Superbike and three-time 500cc World Champion. With his contacts and knowledge he has gathered a strong group of investors and principles that are working to return AMA Pro Roadracing to its former glory. Wet weather has been a problem for MA this first season as 3 of the 4 racing weekends have been soggy. Friday practice was off and on rain, not allowing teams to get much useful information. Saturday arrived with rain again and conditions remained about the same as Friday, forcing teams to be ready for whatever weather came during their classes. It’s a tuners nightmare, all of the suspension changes, tire changes, etc. means more work for everyone. Fan attendance was a little light partially due to weather and some fans have some misguided hard feelings toward AMA because of the last few years of bad management by DMG. All who did attend saw some good racing and a well organized, well run program of races. The food vendors, by far some of the best race track food you’ll ever have, were

happy as the rain kept many fans under their canopies. Sunday’s weather improved and brought more fans to the track and happier faces all around. Sunday’s Fan Walk on pit road was packed with folks looking to meet riders and get autographs. Road America, always looking to improve the fan and racer’s experience, made

more improvements. Several corners on the track were repaved, greatly improving cornering traction in those areas. New viewing areas for fans were carved out of the back straightaway, known as Thunder Valley. Road America is such a treasure right here in District 16. All race fans, car or cycle, should make the trip to this beautiful “National Park of Speed.” Wayne Rainey’s idea is to develop racers

for the world championship classes. Hopefully rules and operational changes more in line with world championships this will prepare American racers to make a smoother transition to world championship racing. Part of that is the new KTM RC390 Cup. This class pits 14 to 22 year old racers against each other on basically stock engined KTM RC390 motorcycles. The class is meant to be a learning tool and hopefully these racers will advance to bigger, faster machines in the future. It is quite a good show with some amazing young talent as shown by 16 year old Gage McAllister. McAllister took home the win on both days. On Saturday evening he also raced in the AMA Supermotard event and won it. There are two 600cc classes, Supersport which run modified engines/ chassis and slick tires. Superstock 600 machines are less modified and must use DOT legal tires. Superbike and Superstock 1000 class machines run in the same race but are scored separately. Superbikes are 1000cc, highly modified, full out race machines running slick tires. The Superstock 1000 bikes are less modified but may run slicks also. I like the changes being made to AMA Pro Roadracing. This first season will allow the new regime to test some theories and work out some bugs in the program. Eventually I think they will be successful in delivering a great program for American road racing fans. Take a ride next year to beautiful Road America and check it out for yourself. There’s so much to see and do, you’ll be hooked for returning year after year. CYCLE USA, July 2015

District 17’s Oregon Trials Oregon, Illinois - May 24 By Liz Jeffries

N

ot even the threat of rain could spoil the fun of the first Oregon trials, and the first Memorial Day weekend event for the NITRO crew. Located on private property up near Oregon Illinois, the land was absolutely beautiful, with woods, hills and lots of trees providing plenty of opportunity for fun. Jeff Franklin, the owner/ trialsmaster, had invited riders to stay for all three days, although only Sunday was a contest, with Saturday and Monday “fun” days. Jeff and his crew had done an outstanding job laying out a loop, including one for spectators and a shorter loop for the women, beginner, and youth classes. There were even practice sections and play areas for the play days on Saturday and Monday. Saturday night boasted a bonfire for all those camping out, providing a great time of sharing stories and just relaxing on a beautiful night. Forty nine riders came out to brave the weather Sunday (gray clouds and spitting rain, although thankfully no downpours). Because of the constant rain threat, riders ‘class checked’ (riding as a class and scoring each other). Even with the rain,

the day turned into an extremely excellent contest. Every section required the utmost concentration to make it through. The rain, while making the ground tacky enough for amazing traction, had left logs a slick and slippery mess. It was a great contrast between the two, requiring riders to be on their game or they were going to go sliding. The sections themselves were set up to be rideable, even in the rain, but the lines were tight and technical meaning that they took plenty of dabs if you weren’t focused. All the sections were a mix of uphills and twisting serpentines around trees, off-camber climbs and logs placed in just the right spot to make you really work for a line. There were smiles all around as riders gathered for awards at the end of the day. Chasen Orme took first for the youth. Kimi Gardner took the win in Women’s, which boasted four riders today. Matt Dissell took the Knobby class and Kevin Huber topped the Vintage class. Lee Orme took first for the Intermediate, which along with Expert were the largest classes with ten riders each. Mike Cross took first in Expert. Results: Youth: 1.Chasen Orme Women: 1.Kim Gardner 2.Anna Rushbrook 3.Gretchen Orme 4.Michelle Dalton
