We are well into the month of May now and the season is finally starting to get some warm weather. April weekends were wet and cold. Lets hope the rest of the season gets warmer and dryer. We have had two Hare Scrambles held so far and the number of participants was phenomenal. One event broke the 400 entree mark, I don’t remember any Hare Scrambles in the past drawing that many. Speaking of increases, our membership numbers are up from this date last year. While it is still early in the season this hopefully is a trend that will continue. We have picked up a few more Supporting Partners including a mortgage lender. Check out the website for all of the support we are getting from our supporting partners. Hill climb and Flat track have both held events and their numbers have been up slightly. These are all good signs that just maybe we are turning the corner. District business is moving along. We’re looking for bids for our year-end awards. This includes trophies, jackets, sweatshirts, hats and any other things that would make great prizes for our winners. We like to start this process early as there are many ideas and decisions to be made in choosing these items. I would like to mention that we have a

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... process for submitting rules changes. This is the time you want to be thinking about submitting them. The forms are on our website. This process was developed so the board of directors has the time to review the proposals to insure they are enforceable, and do not contradict any other rules. If you have questions or ideas about rules changes please ask a class rep or shoot me an email. The decision on rules brought before the members at the annual meeting for a membership vote are made by the members of the board. In the case of votes and or approvals these are all done by board vote. The chairman doesn’t have a vote unless there is a tie then he becomes the tie breaking vote. There seems to be a considerable amount of misunderstanding about how the district works so I will try to pick a facet of district operation each month. Please feel free to send me any question you may have and hopefully I will be able to answer them and clarify situations for all of you. Lastly those of you that have supplied us with an email address will be contacted via email by us presenting an offer to get a link to an online publication. You can accept or reject this link. There is no cost to our members or the district for this publication. I think that is about it for this month. Keep riding and racing, stay safe and enjoy every ride. Mike Wisconsin Dual Sport Rides District 16 has some great Dual Sport opportunities, and now there’s another event added to this list. Valley Springs Motorcycle Club's Dual Sport event is AMA sanctioned in districts 16 and 23. The route will take you throughout the Ellsworth area and neighboring towns. Registration is open to the first 200 participants, on-line sign-up is open at www.valleyspringshillclimb.com

D23 Hare Scrambles Opener Calm before the storm as the C class prepares to battle.
Norsemen Motorcycle Club Cambridge, Minnesota - May 8 By Paul Otto
Y
ou could smell it in the air. That scent of new gear, new bikes and the testosterone of guys reminiscing of how fast they were. Yes, it’s that time of year where old friends gather, new friendships form and your dirt bike family reunites. The opening round of the District 23 Hare Scrambles Series promoted by none other than the Norsemen Motorcycle Club greeted 390 riders on a gorgeous Mother’s Day Sunday. I’m sensing that Moms across the state told Dad to take the kids to the races so they could have some peace and quiet. Although it was a beautiful day, the dry conditions or as one guy said "the Canadian fires" made visibility harsh at times. Luckily we had the brave men from the Princeton Fire Department on hand to water down the first turn for the start of the A/B race. Unfortunately, for the AA riders they didn’t put down enough water as Jerry Robin, younger brother to Danny Robin was on fire. Robin on his YZ250 grabbed the holeshot and never looked back. At the checker flag Robin had a five minute lead over second place finisher Kyle Nelson on his KTM 150. Nelson having a good ride himself was able to hold off the 2015 AMA Rider of The Year Matt Stavish who finished third on his Checkpoint Off-road racing/ LCR backed Honda CRF 250. Senior A rider Paul Otto, riding his Powerband Racing/ Motorex/ LCR backed KTM 300 led the most important lap - the last one. Fending off Jeremy Schmidt for the win Otto said, “he felt the pressure from Schmidt the whole race.” While participation in the youth classes has been declining the Norsemen Motor-
cycle Club continue their efforts, giving free entry to all Micro/ Macro riders hoping this will result in parents pulling the bikes out of the garage and dusting them off. Well it worked and it showed both on the starting line and on their faces with smiles from ear to ear as parents were hooting and hollering for their favorite rider. Hopefully this will bring that itch back to race again. All the Norsemen events will have free Micro/ Macro entry for the remainder of the 2016 season. Speaking of the Micro class, it amazes me the talent these kids have at this age. While at the line I was informed of a brand new Louie Etzel crawled his way rider. Louie Etzel had never from last to sixth in his first race. raced before and was ready place finish and seventh overall B had to have some fun. As the green flag something to do with that. Nuke Series Heats Up Motosports Park Byron, Illinois - May 15 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com
T
he Nuclear series is well underway out at Byron Motosports Park after battling the extremely wet month of May and a cancelled race thrown into the mix. This weekend was looking a little grim as well with rain coming down most of the week. Luckily things calmed down before the weekend hit and Sunday turned out to be a great day. The track soaked up a lot of the water and made conditions prime for some motocross action. Towards the end of the day they ended up needing to put down some water. There was a great turn out this weekend, and you can start to see all the workings going into the prep for the AMA Regional the track is hosting in June. More parking being carved out in place of the hilltop track, and getting everything ready for the massive amount of visitors that will soon be making their way to Motosports Park. Coming out of the gates early in the day was +25 with Kevin Markwardt back on a bike after leaving racing for a while. In the first moto it was a tight battle with Ty Tyrrell coming out front with Eric Feuillerat and Ryan Rowntree rounding out the top three. In the second moto Markwardt came back strong pulling the holeshot on his Honda followed by Johnathan Hartman and Tyrrell. Quickly into the second turn Tyrrell muscled his way into second with Feuillerat pushing hard to take over third. Heading down to complete the first lap Feuillerat had made his way
into third with Tyrrell pushing Markwardt hard to go for the sweep. After several laps Markwardt wasn’t letting off and crossed the line for the win followed by Tyrrell and Feuillerat. Tyrrell took the overall, Markwardt second after a fourth place finish in the first moto and Feuillerat rounded out the day in third. Open C was coming in hot today with thirty-eight riders packing into the forty available gates. This certainly made for some epic starts out there. In the first moto Chase Boykin avoided a large first turn pileup to take the win, followed by Brock Shelton and Johnny Tate. The gate dropped for the second moto to a massive group heading into the first turn bumping elbows for position. Making it into the second turn they all fell into line with Andrew Ramsey out front with Tate and Shelton in the hunt. Heading into the sweeper everyone was still bunched up going back and forth for position with Shelton moving into second as Boykin was battling his way up to fourth, and looking for a line to the front. As everyone came around to close out the first lap Ramsey was starting build a good lead with a clear track ahead, Shelton was still pushing with, Boykin now up to third, making up ground. After several action packed laps the checkers flew with Ramsey hanging onto the lead, Shelton in second and Boykin third. This gave Shelton the overall for the day, Boykin second and Ramsey third after finishing fifth in the first moto. 85Jr had a great battle today with eighteen riders lining up to start the first moto. Johnny Weber grabbed first

with Harry Gibson and Ryder Schnowske landing on the podium. The second moto got underway with Schnowske pulling a holeshot from the far outside and cruising through the next two turns, making it stick. He was followed closely by Luke Jackson and Kayden Bosin as the pack bunched up moving into the sweeper. Weber made it up to third as they hit the table top and was pressing hard. Weber moved up to second with Gibson right behind him taking over third. For several laps Weber put the pressure on Schnowske, and finally got him on the last lap and was able to cross the line for the win and overall. Schnowske held second which also secured second place overall with Gibson rounding out the day in third. Later 250B was on the line ready to get things started, and there’s a lot of new faces in the class this year and some great battles going on. The first moto Christopher Fortier out of Florida took the win followed by Apollo Mbuki and Parker Smith. The second moto got underway with Fortier taking off on the wrong gate drop taking him out of contention for the podium. When the gate dropped RJ Mackenzie rocketed out front followed by Bryce Cox and Andrew Satas Vaupsas went 1-3 in 50Jr for third overall. Hansen. ever. The weather was a concern for everyone and as I’ve seen time and again some rain is always good out at Motosports Park. The track really shapes up nice with a good soak and the lines were getting cut in really nice all day. The season is just getting a move on around the district and it’s already looking to be a great year for the Nuke Series. With how cold it’s been all month one can only wonder what the summer is going bring us, but the racing will go on regardless and it will always be a great time out Motosports Park. Adams Opens District 16 Hare Scrambles Season Madison Motorcycle Club Adams, Wisconsin - May 1 By Ken Schuck, Photos by Brian Mullane
O
ver 175 riders from Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin kicked off the 2016 District 16 Hare Scrambles season at the cranberry bogs/ski lake near Adams Wisconsin on May 1st. Moderate rainfall the night before made for excellent conditions in the sandy soil. The great turnout of riders in all classes made for a fun day of good racing. Notably the Vintage class with a group of riders from South East Wisconsin Enduro Riders dusting off some old bikes for the day. The Vintage class is running at select events this season, so check out the schedule and dig out those old bikes for some additional fun. Also, the C class with a total of forty-five riders made quite an impression. Competition was close in all the classes with the top finishers leading from the start or swapping a position or two over the laps. Even with a six plus mile course with single-track woods, the riders made an impressive number of laps in every class. The largest class of the day, the C class

Bryan also credited picking good lines through Chezich rode a consistent pace to finish the mudholes as a key to his ride. Must second and Mitchell Buth took a fourth be his years of riding enduros. He also place start and worked up to third by the end of their race. Alex noted that his first corner fall put him behind but “smooth riding and avoiding the deep ruts in the mudholes allowed him to catch up and go on to the win. The last race of the day features a two hour battle of the fastest riders, drawing the attention of spectators, workers and other riders as these guys just fly through the open sand bogs and tight woods! Perfect Day at MotoCity Motocity Raceway Staples, Minnesota - May 8 By Samantha Laderer
M
other Nature blessed Motocity Raceway with bright blue skies on Sunday, May 8th. Compared to two weeks earlier with a mud race, the perfect riding conditions were welcomed by all. One of the most heated races was the 14-24B. Austin Aspros shot out of the gate with first place on his mind. The other B riders didn’t stand a chance as Aspros pulled away from the group in the first lap. Aaron Lindell fought his way through the pack after a bad start. One by one Lindell passed his fellow racers and tried his hardest to catch up to As-

pros, making his way to second place in the first moto. In moto two, Aspros pulled away yet again. Lindell pushed hard, but fell short after he cross-rutted before the finish line double, ending his day. Brad Hoppe and Charles Andersen then battled for the second position. Hoppe was feeling good on the bike, but Andersen found a few faster lines in the third lap and passed Hoppe for second place. Following was Wyatt Hooper and Owen Hoppe to finish out the pack. Who said you had to be young to race motocross? The Super Senior class saw eight “young” men line up, and you can’t under estimate them because these guys are fast. Pat McCarthy and Dale Arcker-
man led the pack in both motos. McCarthy, who comes out to race only a few times a year, took the lead early in the race with Steven Tate second off the holeshot. Ackerman made the pass for second after turn two while John Cram then played tag with Tate for the third position. Tate’s new tires were hooking up well which helped him with his confidence on the track. “I was super pumped,” said Tate. Cram was slightly faster though and took over third from Tate in the third lap. Second moto didn’t go much different other than Tate stepped up his game and found some faster lines and kept Cram behind him, but not by much. It was a good battle to see with the older guys. Whether you are 16 years old on a KTM 125 or 56 on a RM250, motocross is something that can always be a part of your life. Once it get in your blood, you’re often hooked. Storms miss Sunset Ridge Turns out to be another fantastic day at the track
90cc Quad racer Kyle Smith with his support crew.
Sunset Ridge MX Walnut, Illinois - May 8
B
ob and Jan Pistole reminded everyone here today that it doesn’t matter if the race they are holding is a National Qualifier, or a mid-sized District 17 points race as part of a regular schedule - they are all in to make it everything possible. With mother nature threatening heavy storms in the morning the crowd out at Sunset Ridge was a little lighter than usual, but the track was perfect, and the crew worked just as hard as any time we’ve ever seen. As the heavy storms seemed to part and go around Sunset as if there was a dome above the track, racing kicked off right on time. A group of impressive Quad riders kicked off the day’s racing. A class rider Justin Medine took over out front as they rounded the first turn, and never looked back to take the win ahead of William Easley. In the Quad C group, Amboy, IL’s Tyler Shugars spent two laps fighting his way towards the front. Once there, hav-
today, as it always seems to be.” Genoa City, WI’s Knull topped both motos ahead of Stillman Valley, IL’s Chase Dorsey. It took Blake Copeland a third of the opening lap to fully control the lead position in the Open A first moto. Billy Holzapfel was in the mix for the lead early before slipping behind Zach Scott and Sean Hallin. As they got into the third lap, Hallin stalled his bike after getting up to second, dropping back a ways. Copeland took the win with Scott and Taylor Mclaughlin rounding out the top three ahead of Holzapfel. Copeland Trucking backed Copeland after the second moto, “It went great. I got two decent starts. In this second moto Billy (Holzapfel) was running awesome in front of me. I was on him and then he made a mistake and went off the track letting me take over. From there I did what I had to, to stay ahead of everyone. The track is rough, and the bumps are growing for sure. I like the outside lines today.” Once Copeland was in the lead, all the racing was behind him. After several position swaps, Scott finally locked in second ahead of Holzapfel and Mclaughlin.
ing passed Nick Baker, then Kawasaki mounted Noah Samuel, he sailed off for the victory. The second combined moto saw these riders quickly get into the same positions to repeat their first moto finishes. After not seeing the quad classes out here on the Qualifier weekend, this was a good reminder of what we were missing. These guys put on a great show, and seeing them push the quads over some of the longer jumps is always cool. Later in the day, after winning the 300cc Quad class, Nathan Knull, “It was pretty, and I went out there and did my own thing once out front. I come down here when I can, and I’m looking forward to the national in June. The track was perfect Kash Schnowske going 1-1 in 85Sr.

Chase Dorsey on his way to second in the 300 Quad class.
Open B rider Edward Lengwin had Rj Mckenzie all over his rear fender for three laps as they fought for the lead. Running with the A class, they had a little longer moto, and Mckenzie used that time to make a late moto pass for the win as Iowa’s Tyler McDonald wrapped up third. They returned in the second moto to finish in the same order. This time McKenzie got out front a little earlier, as Lengwin fell back by only a couple bike lengths by the checkered flag. Twenty-one riders came off the line in Open C for moto one. As they dropped to the second corner to shoot back uphill, Chase Boykin grabbed a two bike length lead ahead of Lucas Garrels, Matthew Selinger and Jake Schmit. As the laps ticket away, coming through the pack Huntr Grampp and Seth Becker were slowly working up. In the last lap as Boykin was out on his own, Grampp
pushed his Suzuki into third behind Garrels. Becker took over fourth ahead of Selinger and Jake Schmit. Garrels grabbed the lead in the second moto, but as they hit the large Pistole’s leap, Boykin held it on and essentially jumped over him to take the front spot. From there the two ran 1-2, much closer this moto, right to the end. Becker had a better start and held third all the way, but not without a lot of pressure through each lap from Grampp. Becker’s 4-3 got the advantage over Grampp (3-4) for the third overall spot. Grampp after the moto, “In the first moto I messed up and was still in neutral off the gate, so I had a lot of riding to do. I worked up to third. This moto I started pretty good and stayed consistent for fourth. The track is great, rough, but good. I race here as often as possible and always like it.”
Race winner Boykin swept both motos of the large 250C class as well... making for a perfect day. Boykin, “ I pulled holeshots or got there right away, and then just held onto it. I rode as smooth as possible. You really have to work the right lines out here. I rode yesterday and Shawn Miller spent some time helping me out. I want to thank my mom for keeping me safe from up above, and all my sponsors for supporting me.” The 250B class saw Ian Pistole take the lead right away in moto one ahead of Dylan Boyd. By the second lap the two were creating a small gap over Daniel Kraemer who made the trip down from Wisconsin. They finished in that order, with Rj Mckenzie fourth. In the second moto, even though it took a bit longer for the leaders to shake the others and settle into positions, the top three were the same, Pistole sweeping both motos. This CYCLE USA, June 2016

time Tyler Sanders finished fourth for fourth overall (6-4). Pistole, after taking his second moto win, “I got off to good starts and just kept hitting my lines well, and it worked out. I had a lot of fun out there as always. Right now it is all about working the outside edges and carrying your speed.” The combined 85Jr and Sr classes put on a good show. Out front was a race of “family pride” between Jr class rider Ryder Schnowske and Sr rider Kash Schnowske, both on Husqvarnas. The two were tooth and nail right to the checkered flag, distancing themselves
time. I got a good holeshot and just took my lines from before and beat everyone, so it was good.” Kash’s cousin, Ryder after the moto, “I wheelied off the start and went into the first corner and almost fell, loosing two more spots coming out. Then a couple corners later I actually went down, starting behind everyone. I worked up and won my class still, so that was good. The track is good. I’d like to thank my parents, and my grandpa, and Husqvarna for building a really good bike.” Ryder climbed back quickly and actually won his class as Lopez and Huddleston re-

from the rest of the class. Sr class rider Tanner Hensen was third overall in the group, and finally late in the moto able to break away from Jr class second place finisher Mario Lopez. Kevin Huddleston and Ian Murphy were third and fourth in the thirteen rider Jr group. In the second moto, it was Sr rider Kash Schnowske out front all the way, with Hensen settling into second in the class. Jr class, and first moto overall leader Ryder Schnowske was well behind everyone halfway through the first lap, after going down early in the race. Kash Schnowske, after winning both of the 85Sr motos, “It went pretty good this
peated the 2-3 finish from the first moto. Thomas Wojtasow jumped out to the early lead in 65Sr, and never flinched. Gavin Batson did a great job of keeping him honest right to the checkered flag as Iowa’s Colin Nash ran in third ahead of Evan Entas. In the second moto, it was much the same for the leaders, but this time Entas rode his Kawasaki to third for third overall ahead of Nash. In 65Jr, both motos saw Ayden Oppenlander take the win. Behind him it was far less consistent, as this is a pretty competitive class that had ten riders. In the first moto, Leo Tucker picked off second place ahead of Christopher Colantoni
- but neither of them could repeat that performance in moto two. Tucker settled for fifth as Colantoni was seventh. This time Kellen Arnold finished third. Combined with a first moto fourth, he grabbed third overall ahead of Tucker. Looking back on the day, it was a fantastic event. The sun was out by late morning, and besides a few raindrops, everyone stayed dry all day. The Sunset crew kept watering as needed, lightly tilling the track where best, and served up perfection as they always do. If you skipped this event simply because of something you saw on the radar, you missed out. With the Quad National and District 17’s Il State Championship, plus all the other races on the way yet this season, you have plenty of chances to make up for missing this event... so don’t blow it again. Marshfield riders beat the mud Elijah Gorecki fighting through some of the sticky early race mud.
Marshfield T&T Riders Marshfield, Wisconsin - May 15 By Doug Forstner
T
wenty five degrees at 5am Sunday morning was what I woke up to, and for a moment I wasn’t sure if I was going to a snowmobile or a motocross race. Usually, the week prior to the Marshfield T & T Riders annual motocross race, it will rain like clockwork and this year was no exception. The track was prepped the weekend prior and was in great shape until all the rain hit. So now on top of the rain soaked track,
racers needed to worry about bikes starting and fingers freezing. Good thing my buddy Chad who spent the night had firewood stacked up and a fire ring ready to go to sit around and warm up with all day. The sun was out and temps slowly rose throughout the day. The track crew did a great job of prep this year, again cutting down more trees allowing sunlight to hit the track and let things dry out better along with some more track changes. Every year for the past five years, this track keeps improving and if you are aren’t coming out to support this longtime AMA club you are missing out. Come on, how can you miss out on the only bungee cord start that has been around for fifty-one years. 50cc riders started the day on the modified peewee track which utilizes the infield area. Peewee Sr had a big turnout of riders battle for eight laps. Eleven racers lined up and it was the #337 of Jace Miller from Michigan and Kyle Schreiner setting the fastest laps both motos. Miller took the overall after winning moto two beating Schreiner. Carter Millette rounded out the top three as Lane
Rhyme and Ryan Berger rounded out the top five. Sportsman B/C was first up on the big the track and #5 Clayton Vonmoos who has been racing flat track a bunch recently, pulled the holeshot in moto one with Jeff Stewart trying to chase him down. On lap two, Stewart made his pass into the lead. Cody Funk also made a pass moving him into third place with Nick Jacobson sliding back to fourth. On lap four, Stewart ran into bike problems in the muddy section after the start allowing Vonmoos back into the lead. Funk inherited second place and Joe Obert-Walton moved into third. On the last lap Funk was doing his best to hold off Obert-Walton but he got by in the back section to claim second. In moto two, Vonmoos took the moto win going 1-1 for the overall. Obert-Walton grabbed a third for second overall, beating out Jacobson who went 4-4. +25B/C had local rider Josh Lechner put his Suzuki out front both motos to take the overall ahead of Elijah Gorecki who made the trip from Elkhorn, WI, going 2-3 for second overall to beat out Scott Ramker who had an awesome second moto going 6-2 for final podium spot. Chris Check and Jerold Petroski had a tie in points, but Check had the better second moto giving him 4th overall. 250C was the largest class on the day and it was Trytan Stewart going 1-1 for the overall beating out the consistent Gavin Burch (2-2). Austin Blunt took his 3-4 scores to third and Chardae Tovar ran great both motos on her Suzuki giving for fourth overall beating out Funk who rounded out top five even with his third place finish in moto two. On a side note, Trytan also took home

first in the new Two Stroke B/C class as well as Open C. T&T stands for track and trail, and while the group gets together to ride motorcycles, they appreciate the annual motocross event as a major fundraiser for the club. The club is also looking to attract people to use the track throughout the year and offers the option of an off-road
membership. As the day wrapped up, it was hard to believe that it was almost 60 degrees with the sun shining and everyone saw a hint of dust coming off the track. No one had to be pulled out of the pits and all left thinking that they are excited about the future on this historic track.

Olson Golden at Cedar Lake New Richmond, Wisconsin - May 16 By Tim McBride
R
ound two of the District 23 flat track season was once again hosted by the Shadow Valley Drifters at the Cedar Lake Arena Indoor facility, where D-23 Flat Track Representative, Mark Olson scored his first Open Pro class victory of the season ahead of some tough competition. The two Pro Motorcycle divisions saw a familiar face on the top tier of the podium in form of AMA GNC National Number #68 Josh Koch. Olson’s day go off to a rocky start in the Quad - +25 class main event where he spun out while keeping close tabs on previous heat race winner Tim Hinz. Olson’s miscue relieved the pressure
from the race winner Hinz and allowed Ryan Howe to race by to finish second. In the Open Pro class main Olson changed his strategy by starting with a holeshot then pulling away from heat race winner Justin Berhow and Hinz to score a convincing victory. Juggling duties as District Rep and helping promote the races, Olson has had his hand full of responsibilities, “I had a nice second place going until that happened (referring to his spin in +25). I got a great start in the Pro-Am and won a bit of money! It’s been a rough three weeks, but this helps bring my spirits up!” In other Quad racing action Justin Berhow took top honors in the Open A class after a close race with Tim Hinz and Brandon Mattson. The popular Shadow Valley Special class saw Kyal Prochnow
score a narrow upset victory over heat race winner Dustin Wigen with Ryan Howe, Dawson Lugert and Brandon Mattson in tow. The two wheeled division saw AMA GNC National #68 Josh Koch continue with his winning ways. The Anderson Plumbing sponsored Koch won both the 450 Pro and Open Pro classes. Ezra Brusky pulled a double also by topping the 80cc Open and the Supermini classes in convincing fashion. The 65cc Mini main event appeared in the hands of heat winner Ethan Ramsey until the youngster crashed heavily on the front straight. Waylon Hastings went on to score the win with Rowan Penders in tow. Ramsey remounted - obviously shaken, but couldn’t finish the due to damage to his bike. Cedar Lake Results on page 35

MC Motopark Area Qualifier MC Motopark Mount Carroll, Illinois, May 21/ 22 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography
M
C Motopark hosted a Loretta Lynn’s qualifier for the North Central Area, one of the last chances at getting through to the regionals. This was also a District 17 points paying weekend. It was a great event running over two days covering twentyeight different classes. For those unfamiliar with the process in the North Central Region the top 8 will advance to the Regional with the exception the staggered classes which allow the top 4. There are also opportunities for alternates to make it through as well with some math dependent on the number of entries. The weather this weekend turned out perfect with any sign of rain completely out of the picture, which is great for the way things have been shaping up this May. The track crew did a great job of keeping things moving right along with very little stopping of the action for some slight grooming, there was some great ruts out there and plenty of lines for great racing. To touch on some of the larger classes

out there this weekend, there was a lot of from all over the country, as far as local riders gaining their admission into Canada to get through to the Regionals. the regionals. 250B limited was stacked on Saturday with thirtyone riders lining up for action. Christopher Fortier was sweeping all of the B classes this weekend, coming from Florida and now staying out at Byron training with Club 57, he is going to be one to watch for in the B class this year, sweeping both motos in 250 Limited. We also had Sam Tinkey (IA), Stuart Schwagerman (IL), and Damon Evans (IL) advancing through on Saturday. 250C Limited was packed on Saturday as well with thirty-one riders. Chase Boykin (IL) was the star of the day pushing back from a fourth place finish in the first moto to winning the second moto, taking the overall. Super Mini 1 was great with the 12-15 class really turning up the heat. Patrick Murphy (IA) was looking to take things over on his Rock River Yamaha taking second in the first moto, but having a crash and not wanting to hurt things further bowed out of the second moto. Pushing through was Dj Gritzmacher (WI), Brandon Martyniak (Wi) and Miss Sarauer (IA) to round out the day with everyone out there really pushing hard.
Water slide, future entertainment stage and swimming pond will be part of a weekend’s fun.
Sunday came around to much warmer temperatures and the racing was just as intense. In +25, Tommy Hofmaster (IL) came out on top after fighting with Ty Tyrrell (IL) in both motos. Hofmaster took the overall with a third place in the first moto and winning the second moto. The entire top eight moving through was from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. This left Hofmaster, James Povolny Jr and Tyrrell rounding out the top three.
450C ran on Sunday with eighteen riders pushing it for a spot to the Regionals. Once again Chase Boykin came out victorious taking the overall after a third and first place finish. Aiden Krisch was back in the top taking second and Tyler Evensen (IL) grabbed the third spot. We also saw John Tate (IL) and Hunter Grampp (IL) making it through, staying in the top eight after some really hard riding in the heat. College boy was a big class on Sunday with seventeen riders. Zach Coons (WI) pushed through for a second overall with Logan Dagner (IL) taking third. Sam Tinkey was back at it putting it through the top eight along with Charles Anderson (MN) and Zach Scott (IL). It was an extremely successful event for the crew out at MC MotoPark this weekend with riders spending Friday through Sunday at the facilities. Things are really starting to grow around the track with new activities being worked on along with the already implemented fun for everyone on site. There was some great dinners every night for families to take part in, along with the huge waterslide running Friday and Saturday after

Fantastic Theilman Trail Ride
Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club Theilman, Minnesota - May 21-22 By Mike Quinn
I
was lucky enough to be able to get in a full loop at the Theilman trial ride, hosted by the Golden Eagles Cycle Club of Rochester MN. The event has been held twice a year for over 25 years now. I remember when we first met with the DNR to request permission for a special event permit that would allow motorized vehicles in the Zumbro Bottoms Management Area for two days each spring and each fall. It was an uphill battle but one that was well worth it. Those early years the rider turnout seemed a bit disappointing at only a hundred or so entries. In the decades since, it has grown into the largest single event on the District 23 calendar. I did not receive the official count as of this writing, but it was another 800 plus rider event. The Assembly area was overflowing with campers, trailers and RVs. This ride draws entries from all the surrounding states, and states further away such as Illinois and Indiana. The club had a very well marked loop with both easy and
hard routes marked as well as an ATV route. I actually expected the trails to be a bit greasy to muddy since we’ve had so much rain lately, but the opposite was true. The trails were in great condition
and some open spots even sported a bit of dust. The two track trails were well marked and fun. It was nice to see so many families, with their sons and daughters, enjoying the sights and motoring along the trails. The single track was challenging and trails were in great shape. They have been ridden for many years but appear to be in near new condition. This is because the club promoting this ride devotes hundreds of hours to fixing up the trails after every event. They have set an example for all clubs and promoters on working with the DNR to achieve a winwin situation for all parties. My son and I left the assembly area and headed up the first of a few hills and proceeded to the overlook. Looking down on the assembly area with all the vehicles jammed in was amazing. From a handful of vehicles in the early years to not having enough room for all of them told a story of the rewards of hard work. Theilman, continued on page 45

his weekend brought us to the second event of the 2016 season, and the schedule brought the trials crew to the home of Jeff Franklin in Oregon, IL. It was to be a joint effort between the District 16 WOTA and District 17 NITRO clubs, and promised to be the best of both clubs. As always, the landowner had done an amazing job. There was plenty of room for camping, a bonfire for Saturday night, and the sections were amazing! On the lawn, they set up the pre-youth sections, one of the competitors only three years old! For the adults, there were twelve sections each day scattered throughout the woods, with riders only having to ride eight. For several of the sections, upper level riders were sent on top of a ridge, while the women, youth, and novice classes had sections all to themselves. The sections were an amazing mix of difficulty, from a huge rock garden in Section 1 on Saturday to tight twisty turns, off camber logs, to steep inclines and banks that the upper level rid44

Saturday’s weather was not so cooperative, as it had rained for four hours the night before. The day dawned cloudy, gray, and cold. The soil however, being sand, had drained fairly well. It made an interesting mix of perfect traction and slick spots where the surface crumbled away as tires skated across it. The wet did cause havoc for a few sections though, taking already tough lines and making them the ultimate challenges of the day. Saturday saw Veronica Misek taking first place for the Pre Youth, with Weston Poth placing first for the Youth (which rode the Novice lines in four sections). The Women’s class was won by Victoria Wallerich (who rode the same four Novice sections as the Youth). The Senior Expert rider Ralph Littlefield
ond place by eleven points.
Novice (which had eight competitors) was won by Kimi Gardner. The largest class of the day was Intermediate with twelve riders, was won by Ray Cosgrove. Tom Littlefield took the Advanced class,
with Ryan Rivenburgh topping the Expert field and Dave Rohrschneider taking the Champ class by only two points over Luke Littlefield. Sunday, by comparison, dawned sunny and bright. The loop and sections dried out, and the trialsmasters had done an amazing job overnight of easing up some of the more difficult lines. More than sixty riders turned out to compete! The Vintage class was taken by Clark Runyard with only two points, and Jim Schaidle won the Senior class with six. Tyler Ingold got first with the Novice class, and Ray Cosgrove was at the top spot for Intermediate. Keith Johnson took the win in the Advanced class. There was a tie in the Expert class for first between Mike Cross and Rick Agans, which Mike won with an amazing eleven cleans. Dave Rohrschneider took the Champ class once again, taking first place with forty-eight points, beating sec-
Theilman, continued from page 43 Once we left the overlook, we picked up the red arrowed (more difficult) trail that would cut through the west side of the management area. We rode uphill downhill and traversing trails for miles. It seemed like we went for hours although the reality is it was more like 45 minutes to complete the west loop. We then dropped down to the Zumbro River, crossed the bridge and headed into the east loop. This part of the ride is fast flowing and tons of fun. The Ridge trail, sand coulee and high speed high road complete with jumps top off the loop. We then capped off the ride by crossing the bridge one last time and taking the famous bottoms trails back to the start area. The bottoms are far and away my favorite part of the ride. I could do loops in the bottoms all day long. The trails are tacking, bumpy enough to be challenging, with short straights and more turns than a plate of spaghetti noodles. It would have been nice to have the time to do another loop but it was not to be on this weekend. I’m already marking my calendar for the fall ride as I really want to get in both days of riding on that one. As a bonus for the riders, Tom and
Karen Umphress and club hosted a pancake breakfast for everyone that was up early and ready to ride. They sold out on Saturday morning and had to make a trip into town Saturday night to restock their supplies for a hungry Sunday morning crowd. All in all the event was an unqualified success, with trails for every riding ability, great conditions, it was well marked and well attended. If you
own a dirt bike or dual sport bike this is an absolute must do ride. If you missed the May ride mark your calendar for the fall event. You really do not want to miss this event. I never get tired of this area, maybe it is because we only get to ride it twice a year. Whatever the reason, it is a great way to experience what makes dirt bike riders the passionate people they are.

Roselawn Hare Scrambles Roselawn, Indiana - April 30 By BriAnn Stocklen

ound 3 and round 4 of the WFO Promotions Series were held in Roselawn, IN. However, the same location provided two different tracks for the two days. On Saturday, the 65s, 85s, Supermini and Women’s race and the morning big bike race raced on one 4.5 mile course while the afternoon big bikes raced on a separate five mile course with only about 1.5 miles of coexisting trail between the two tracks. There was one major obstacle that every rider had to deal with over the weekend rain! It rained steady all day Saturday from about 8AM until 9PM. Luckily for the morning racers, their track was the sandier of the two tracks. This added just enough moisture to make the track almost perfect, despite dealing with the falling rain. After the morning big bike event, course changes were made for the afternoon bikes. This five mile course had more black dirt than sand. After rain had fallen all morning, this event was

pretty sloppy. Not only did they have to deal with the muddy conditions, the rain was still coming down. The AA class fired their bikes at the sound of the shotgun and took off. Cody Barnes, aboard his Gieson’s Motorsports YZ250 two stroke was the early leader. The first lap was a bit wild as riders were fighting to find traction and trying to figure out where to go. About a third of the way into the first lap, Adam Bonneur, aboard a Suzuki RMZ450 found a hot line around Barnes. From there Bonneur quickly gapped the field while Stephen Willis, Austin Wells, Colt Converse, and Tyler Vore were in pursuit. Willis washed the front tire about halfway through lap one, allowing Wells, Converse, and Vore by. After lap one, Wells pulled off to switch to a
fresh pair of goggles, allowing Converse and Vore to pass and pull away some. Vore made a pass on Converse early on and put his head down to try to chase down Barnes for second. Bonneur received the white flag, signaling one lap to go, while Barnes was still roughly a minute back. Bonneur, put it on cruise control on his final lap only to come in and receive another white flag! The scoring officials misjudged his lap time and he come in just over a minute before the cut-off time. At this time, Bonneur had to grab a fresh pair of goggles before going out on his final lap, but used up just enough time for Barnes to sneak by and take the lead! Vore was cut off by time and finished third overall. Converse finished 4th and Wells 5th, but we had yet to see who would win the race. Bonneur was able to find a place to pass Barnes on the additional lap to take the overall win, with Barnes finishing five seconds back in second place. In the 86-200B class, Tommy Fortune, Jr. took the win after a last lap pass on Tanner Whipple. TJ Nees rounded out the podium in third. These three up-andcomers are a fast group of kids.
The race tracks for Sunday were reversed. The minis and morning big bike events raced on the 5 mile black-dirt track and the afternoon big bike event was held on the 4.5 mile sandy track. Despite the rain, 280 total entries were tallied at the two-day event. Charlie Deutscher did a great job at setting up two different tracks and putting on a great event. athan Ferderer took advantage of a perfect spring day at Spring Creek Park to slice through the hare scrambles course laid out in the surrounding hills and put a whoopin’ on his competition in the AA class. Leading the way through the first turn after a dead engine start on the motocross starting line, he had Kyle Nelson and Nick Swenson in pursuit as they soon left the track and disappeared into the woods. He hammered out a nice lead in the first couple of laps, pulling about fourteen minute lap times, then settled into steady pace as Nelson and Swenson trailed him about 30 and 45 seconds behind. The weather was temperate with highs in the 60’s so they could hold a good pace and the trails were in mint condition due to plentiful rain during the previous week, and just enough time to dry the surface a bit before race day. Nearing the end of the two-hour mark when the checkered was scheduled to wave, the leaders came through so they had one final lap to make a move to secure a win. By this time lapped traffic was quite an issue as a lot of the riders were reaching their endurance limits and the leaders were pushing through still at a good pace. Nelson was maintaining second over Swenson but neither were able to close on Ferderer for a challenge. Late in the lap Nelson found one lapper too many and sampled the Spring Creek trailside rest stop. This gave Swenson the break he needed to quickly slip into second. Ferderer pulled across the finish line with a secure win with Swenson and Nelson safely behind. The legendary Matt Stavish secured fourth with a nice ride for kind of an elderly fellow with Matt Lindeberg rounding out the top five. With the great weather and sunshine there was a huge turnout of riders; 86 youth entries and 333 amateurs for a total of 419. Thanks to all the volunteers, as well as KTM and Larsons Cycle for their support of hare scrambles competition.

fter weeks of fluctuating weather patterns, I’m sure everyone at Aztalan feared a shift in the sunny, warm week we were experiencing just before the first race of the year. Luckily, Mother Nature didn’t decide to throw any rain or cold temperatures at the 417 entries who showed up to race on Sunday and we experienced a beautiful, sunny and 70 degree day. The riders and club members were excited to kick off the season and welcome back motocross races after a long winter and an April rain-out. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and all the riders put on a competitive day of racing. Riley Busse grabbed the first holeshot of the season as he led the 50Sr. class around the first corner. By the time the group reached the plateau, Busse continued to hold the lead, with Owen Blakey quickly gaining time on him. Blakey continued to pressure

As they reached the start jump in the second lap, Johnson and Wolf were in a good battle for third, with Paytyn Dosch shortly behind. During the last lap, Busse moved around Blakey for first, holding on to the position until the end. Blakey (1/2) walked away with the overall, leaving Wolf (2/4) to take second and Johnson (4/3) third. Blakey reflecting on the day, “The first race of the season went awesome! It was great to get out to Aztalan and I was so excited to take home the first place trophy. The new trophies are really cool! The track was great too. It wasn’t too rocky, bumpy, or muddy. Doeberlein then had quite the battle with Earley for second, before Earley grabbed the position. Jesko (2/1) took the overall, with Earley (1/2) second and Doeberlein (4/3) third. In the Mini 85 9-13 class Justin Oehlhof started his season out right by rocketing down the start straight to grab the moto one holeshot. By the time they reached the plateau, Elijah Tetzlaff had made the move around Oehlhof for the lead. Dylan Duclos was holding onto a strong third place position, while Spencer Hein and Sean Badker kept it close just a short ways behind. By the second lap, Badker increased his pressure on Hein and managed to make the pass. Tetzlaff took first at the checkers, followed by Oehlhof, Duclos and Badker. In moto two, Oehlhof once again grabbed the holeshot. He held onto first until the second lap, when Tetzlaff found his way around. Duclos again fought strong for third, while Hein took over fourth. In moto two, Wolf charged ahead of the group for the holeshot. Wolf continued his lead into the second lap, with Skodras second, Taylor Strauss in third and Josh Philbrick fourth. Strauss stumbled in the corner, allowing Laporte and Coons to pick up third and fourth. away with the overall with Wolf (4/1) second, and Laporte (3/3) third. Wolf on the day, “I just want to say how glad I was to have my mom at the track for Mother’s Day. In the first moto I got a bad start, but worked my way up. In the second moto my Sportland2 Honda pulled the holeshot and I put the hammer down because I knew my buddy Tylor Skodras was coming for me! I ended up staying consistent and strong to take the moto win! I cannot thank my parents enough for giving me the opportunities this year and I wouldn’t be where I am today without all my sponsors. So, thank you to Sportland2, Eagle Disposal, Vmetals, Spectro Oils, EVS, Answer, Tucker Rocky and everyone else.” Once again, Aztalan showed the riders that the club is committed to always making race day the best they can. Perfect weather, combined with a good turnout of riders, and it turned out to be an awesome opening weekend for Aztalan.

D23’s Little Falls Raceway Little Falls Raceway Little Falls, Minnesota - May 15 By Samantha Laderer
W
hen you are wide awake at 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning, you know it must be race day. Although the weather wasn’t as warm as the week before, the sun was still shining, and the temperatures of around 55 still made for a nice race day. This Sunday’s schedule was a little different compared to normal due to a joint race between the District 23 and the Loretta Lynn’s area qualifier. First race to begin the day was the district’s 50cc Chain Premix 4-6 and 7-8. A
Alexandria, MN’s Gavin Wilkins leading in 250A
total of eleven little boys and girls lined the gates. Of them in the 7-8 class was Christian Berg and Brady Karolevitz. Berg pulled the holeshot. Karolevitz made the pass for the lead in the second turn. The two then battled back and forth until lap three when Berg found a faster line and took over out front for good. Braxton Kragenbring rounded out the top three. In the second moto, Kaden Tabaka pulled the holeshot. Berg was forced to go wide, which meant he had to work his way back up to the top position. That wasn’t too hard for him because just after half a lap he was already running in the
top three. He passed Tabaka and Karolevitz not far from the finish line giving him the top position. Once out front, Berg pulled away, leaving the other two to battle it out. Tabaka made a mistake hitting an outside line allowing Karolevitz to take the faster inside line to make a clean pass in corner three. After making the pass he pushed to catch Berg, but fell short by only a few seconds. Race eight saw another group of non qualifying classes, which was Schoolboy 1 12-16 and the 14-24A, B, and C. In Schoolboy, Bailey Kroone pulled the holeshot with Joshua Boaz, Chase Webber, and Gavin Janovsky behind him. Kroone and Boaz soon pulled away showcasing a good battle up front. Boaz passed Kroone for the lead. Kroone, however, didn’t give up and stayed on Boaz’s tail. Also on the track was a heated battle between Gavin Kadlec and Philip Maus and it was stealing a lot of attention of the spectators. Maus was hot on Kadlec’s rear tire until lap three where he made the pass for the lead. On the white flag lap, Kadlec went for a pass, but Maus was able to hold him off. Kadlec was unable to find another chance to make a pass before the checkers flew, giving Maus the win in moto one in the 14-24A class. Austin Kienest and Brandon Kofstad finished out the pack in the third and fourth positions. In the second moto for Schoolboy, the race went very similar to the first. There were a few different battles but the end results remained the same with Boaz in first and Kroone following. However, for the 14-24A class, Kadlec was able to find some faster lines than Maus and took the lead. The track at this point was getting pretty rough so finding a smooth fast line was key. Kofstad didn’t start due an injured ankle, which left Kienest to ride his own race in the third position. CYCLE USA, June 2016

Despite a cold start to the day, all the racing action was still on point and another Sunday ended with more racing memories made. Between Saturday and Sunday’s qualifying races, over 40 riders from Minnesota qualified for the Loretta Lynn’s Regional; most in multiple classes. The Kadlec family, who run Little Falls and Motocity in Staples, as well as the rest of District 23 wish the best for the riders at the regional and would like to remind them to never give up on chasing their dreams. Woodstock MX McHenry, Illinois - May 20
T
he 2016 Woodstock Stadium MX season kicked off on a perfect Friday night May 20th. In addition to great weather, the Woodstock team had a large open house scheduled for the next day at their dealerships, so there was a bunch of cool industry stuff present at tonight’s race. The Moose Racing and Thor semis. Hammertime had a display, The Red Bull truck, and representatives from several other dealerships plus some heavy hitters from the industry added to the excitement of the evening. In a sign of where these efforts are going, over 200 entries were on hand, and a bunch of spectators. Add in some fantastic track prep and cool changes, and it was already a fantastic night even before the first gate dropped. Racing started with heat races for everyone, then main events. In 85Sr, Connor Burger simply owned the class. He jumped into the lead right off the start, and put in nothing but fast laps. Behind him, Zachary Brunner pushed Anthony Vargas as hard as he could through the first couple laps. Vargas picked up a couple bike lengths mid moto through the new sand section, and then rode smart to second place as Mitchell Reich and Ryan Koepp rounded out the top five.
HR Powersports/ Burger Trucking/ Fly backed Burger after his win, “It was good out there tonight. Just got a good start and never looked back. The sand is pretty fun. I just try to stay smooth out there and use good throttle control.” In the eleven rider 85Jr class, Wyatt
Mattson had to be on his toes all moto as Ryder Beth never gave him any room for a mistake. In the end, Mattson held on to start his season with a win. Evan Griffiths kicked it up a bit to improve on his heat race, and finish third ahead of Noah Bindas and John Fallaw. The 50cc classes have always been good sized here at Woodstock... as they were twenty years ago at the old Lake Geneva Raceway. Something about fitting in an additional race during the weekend, and on a track the entire family can view easily seems to work. Tonight, between the Jr and Sr classes, there were twenty-five entries, sixteen of them in Jr. The heat race gave us all a pretty good example of what would happen in the main, at least at the front of the pack. When the main event gate dropped, Mikah Carpenter dove into the first corner on his Cobra to grab the holeshot ahead of Jayden Adams. The two ran 12 through each lap, just as they had earlier. This time, in third it was Jaxson Schiller. He had a good start in the earlier heat race, but ran into problems and settled for ninth. He left all that behind him this time, and even with some pres-

The track is fantastic, and the new sand section is so fun with the dragon styled obstacle following it.” In the second group, 250C-2, Austin Hansen once again had a great start on his Yamaha 250F. While out front, he had Colton Ludwig behind, being pushed hard by Zack Jurgensen. In the heat race ran earlier, these same three riders were in the mix, and Jurgensen actually made his way into the lead for the win. This time, Hansen was glad to have Ludwig as a bit of a buffer for Jurgensen’s non stop efforts to advance. Lap after lap Jurgensen pounded on Ludwig, but Ludwig seemed unshaken. In the last lap, Jurgensen made Matthew Alshouse on his way to sixth in the 50Jr class. 64

ing a “heat” race. A repeat set up in the main when Lorenz once again jumped out front. Stefka dropped Justin Nalezny to third half a lap in, and then went back after the leader. Lorenz after the main, “Yea, we got into it a bit in the heat race, but we talked about it after and it’s all good, and just close racing. I got a little better jump out front this time. I stayed more smooth this time, and had a fast line over the new dragonback, so I never let him get as close this time. The track is awesome, and has come a long ways even since last year. It is great seeing the big crowd, and everything they have going on out here for this opener. I’d like to thank Amsoil, SE Sales, Fly, Lorenz Excavating and everyone for helping me so much.” Stefka finished second ahead of Nalezny, Kyle Schneider and Blake
Bauer in the fifteen rider class. Travis Sewell had a big night on his Woodstock KTM, taking the win in Open A, 250A and the +25 classes. He led

of both the heat and main in the nine rider Women’s class. In the main, as she slowly inched away towards the win, Erin Pusateri locked up second ahead of Brooke Kennebeck. Madisyn Larson and Emily Smith rounded out the top five. Wolf after putting in her quick laps, “I did pretty good out there, and the track was great. I like the jumps, and the sand section is fun. This was my first ride out here, and I’d like to do more for sure. I’d like to thank Sportland2, and my mom and dad for everything they do to help me with my racing. I really appreciate it all.” The night ended just before curfew time... a example of how this team can kick out a lot of good racing in such a short evening. As far as openers go, this was pretty much perfect... and a sign of the great season to come.

Quad Motocross in Cambridge
Cambridge, Minnesota - May 1 Story by Melissa Merschman Photos by Samantha Laderer

he first weekend of May brought round three of District 23 quad racing. Though the weather was a bit chilly, the quad numbers were magnificent; sixty-seven entries made round three the best turn-out D23 events have seen in a long time! In the 90-125cc Semi Stock class, Austin Lowry, the defending champ hit it hard and wheelie off the gate. Tanner Carlson and Tanner Carlson crossed into each other as Lowry pulled the holeshot. Lowry led the whole race with Carlson on his back wheels. Montray Thomas held steady at third ahead of Kasper. Moto two was another hot battle between Lowry and Carlson. This time Carlson pulled the holeshot, with Lowry behind. Lowry went for a pass outside on the second corner, and the two riders came together resulting in Lowry going off the track. He managed to overcome and hold on to second place with Thomas and Kasper close behind. Lowry worked hard, but wasn’t able to find the opportunity to take the lead, giving Carlson his first ever overall win! This class of young men is a site to see. They push each other for all that they have, and race their hearts out each and every time they hit the track! 66

After an early mid-pack pile up in a back corner, Russ Strack on the lone two-stroke Yamaha Banshee claimed the checkered with Brandon Lenk and Dawson Lugert in a close second and third. It was a great change for District 23 to see gates full of quads. Many new riders entered the competition; several riders blew the dust off their quads and rejoined the D23 quad family as well. These are both great things for the future of quad Austin Lowry & Tanner Carlson battle racing in District 23.
