Barney Larson By Mike Quinn

anuary 6th, 2018, ARMCA District 23 lost another one of the pillars of our organization. Barney Larson passed away at home with his family by his side. Many of you know Barney as the owner of Larson Cycle in Cambridge. He along with his wife Karen spent the years since 1955, manning the shop, selling bikes, racing and helping promote races. It was always fun to visit Larson’s Cycle, whether picking up a new bike or parts, it was talking with the Larsons while there that made the trip well worth while. I bought my first machine in 1976, a 360 WR Husqvarna and have been going back ever since. I still like to pay the shop a visit at least once or twice a year just to say hello to the crew. Barney was one of the six founding members of the Norsemen Motorcycle Club in 1960. He and Karen were active in the racing scene, as participants in Flat Track, Hillclimb and En-

duros, helping in the promotion of events with the Norsemen. For those of you that don’t know the history of motocross, suffice it to say the Norsemen club was one of the first to promote MX in the state. Barney was part of that movement even though he wasn’t an MX racer. His racing spanned approximately thirty years, during which time he amassed a collection of over 200 trophies. I think it is reasonable to infer that his racing background helped him with his business. Barney understood racers and their needs. His activity as a racer and later as an event volunteer kept Larsons at the forefront of racing in Minnesota. Barney served on the Board of Directors of D23 for many years as well. Barney was also one of the handful of Lifetime Achievement Members of our district. The many hours spent promoting the sport of motorcycling in all of its forms earned him the respect and gratitude of all those that ever met or knew him. Those of us

that have been around the riding and racing scene for a few decades will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Karen, his son Mike, now owner of Larsons Cycle, daughter Lori, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Godspeed Barney, you will be missed.

or the second year the Madison Motorcycle Club organized the Frosty Cheeks 3 Hour endurance ice race on Crystal Lake at the Crystal Lake Campground. The 5.1 mile layout by the team of John Strangfeld and Speedy Pete Laubmeier was the perfect combination of tight corners and wide open straights to keep everyone happy and the competition hot all day long. Thankfully the unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of snow were corrected by Mother Nature just in time to put on a foot plus of ice and enough snow for the course to be marked out by the plows on Friday. On race day the ice was hard and crisp with the temperature hovering around zero during the riders meeting before practice. At noon the quiet was broken as bikes started revving, waiting for the start. All the classes race at the same time, but go off in waves. First off the line was the Lightweight bike class with the US Chrome (Ryan Callies/ Braxton Callies) bike grabbing the holeshot ahead of Schweighardt Concrete (Tyler Smulders/ Ed Smulders/ Ben Schweighardt) and JJ Racing (Jason Goth/ Joseph Goth) entries. By the end of hour one US Chrome was still holding the lead (11th overall)

with four different class bikes wedged in front of Schweighardt. JJ Racing was unfortunately forced out with a mechanical issue. Two Fiddies (Paul Elledge/ Joey

Schweighardt held on out front with US Chrome pushing them hard all the way to the finish. Tyler Smulders, “Today I teamed up with my dad Eddie, and Ben Schweighardt. We had a good day overall even after a goofy mistake when we figured out the rear tire was mounted backwards but we were able to find someone with one that we could use for the race. First lap I lost the shifter and had to come back in and put it back on, another learning experience. This was a fun race and it supports a great cause. I really liked the course, some high speeds for the 450s and a lot of tight stuff for the little bikes to get around and make up time. We did good and I want to thank Rob’s Performance, Sportland 2, Eric Gorr, and Ben Schweighardt Concrete for supporting us.”

District 17’s 2018 Motocross Season Opener Casey Illinois - February 18 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

he Snowflake shootout lived up to its name as 330 entries were welcomed with snow showers as they pulled into the track for Saturday’s practice. Being the first District 17 race of the year people came from eight states for the chance to line up on LTM’s famous Classic Track. Saturday practice was cold and the track was wet from the winter, but it didn’t keep the riders off the track. Saturday night the LTM crew went to work and scraped and packed the track giving the riders a better track Sunday morning. With Sunday being a much better weather day, the track started out frozen but as the temps warmed up the track got softer making the first sets of motos a challenge for all riders. The crew again went to work and for the second set of motos the track was amazing considering the freeze and thaw. The best thing was riders were excited to be back at the

track, seeing friends and getting a chance to race. At the rider’s meeting you could tell people were excited to see who would get the first gate drop of 2018. When the line-up was posted it was the Schoolboy 1 with six riders and the opening moto. First off the line was Schoolboy 1, and when the riders hit the first turn it was the KTM of Mason Lutz out front and ripping. With the track being challenging riders were all over the place but at the finish it was Lutz first ahead of Brodie Bennett and KTM rider Conner Pullum. In the second moto Lutz again had his KTM out front. Bennett was unable to make the call for the second moto leaving second overall

up for grabs. Aiden Patton took the spot with Pullum in third. At the finish Lutz took the win and the first overall of 2018. With twenty-two riders coming off the gate all eyes were on the start for the Open Beginner class. When the gate dropped mud was flying and so was the 250 KTM of Dylan Daugherty. With a wild pack behind him, Daugherty rode smart and smooth and took the first moto win with Honda rider Luke Goodman second and Dalton Dent in third. Dent didn’t make the second moto and a shake- up at the front was a sure thing. With the gate down it was again Daugherty first to the first turn but this time he couldn’t hold it as Logan Vaughn and Travis Jones slipped by. Vaughn took advantage of the clear track and rode off. Jones was also having a good ride and had second under control. First moto winner Daugherty wasn’t having his best ride but by the end of the moto had CYCLE USA, March 2018

gathered himself and was on the charge. When the flag came out for the end of the moto Vaughn took the win. Jones came into the finish line in cruise mode and on the last corner, Daugherty still charging, railed around the outside and passed Jones for second in the moto and first overall. After such a great moto Jones learned a big lesson: Don’t back off until you cross the finish line! With the results in the books Daughtery took his first overall win, Vaughn finished second overall with Jones third. It just shows, A class or the Beginner class, great racing is great racing. The 125 Two-Stroke class is popular for many riders. There are kids coming off minis riding their first big bike. Riders who just love riding 125s and there are Vets who are revisiting their youth, and everyone agrees they are a blast to ride. In the first moto Yamaha rider J C Hoyt pulled a great start and took off with the pack hot on his heels. Hoyt’s lead didn’t last long as he started fighting the track. In this moto the track won as Hoyt didn’t finish. KTM rider Adian Patton was back at it and rode a great race for the first moto win. Long

Being a Vet with much younger riders in the class, after the race I asked him what made him decide to ride a 125? He told me “A guy from work bought this bike and I did the work on it for him. The bike was so fun to ride I bought it. This thing is a blast to ride!” KTM rider Conner Pullum finished third making it a sweep for orange bikes. In the second moto it was again Hoyt with the jump at the start but Patton wasted no time getting by and taking the moto and overall win. This moto Hoyt kept it on two wheels and put in a strong ride for second in the moto. Third for the moto was Lankutis giving him second overall on his fun ride. Pullum finished fourth for third overall. District 17 is up and running for the 2018 season. Great job and thank you to the whole LTM crew for again making a great racing weekend. Johnson Triples Otter Street Oshkosh, WI - February 3 By Gordon Lunde

rey Johnson bested the best in short track ice racing at the Otter Street Fisheree ice races by winning three events on the day. The annual short track ice races held at this event drew a nice crowd of racers from the area even though the weather wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the best for travel. A steady light snow kept the roads slick across a large part of the state. The Beaver Cycle Club has promoted this event for many years and once again provided a great show. As part of the weekend activities with the fisheree, the races are free to spectators and the track was lined with fans here to cheer on their local riders. Johnson was on a roll this day as he claimed first place in all of his heat races and finals. In youth competition, Ethan Ebben had

through the second lap. A couple of the bigger bikes soon caught and passed, but Ethan fought for fifth place until the last lap, eventually finishing seventh. The eleven year old looks to be a serious contender in the future! The final event of the day was Amateur TT, a road course style race that proved to be one of the best of the day. The first turn was a very tight left hand corner that had the pack bunching up and banging off each other. Trey Johnson was first into the turn and got away from the fray behind him. D23 Motocross Championships Motocross awards program sees popular changes Red Wing, Minnesota - January 13 By Mike Quinn

anuary 13th was the date of the District 23 Fly Minnesota State Motocross Championship Awards Banquet. The format for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s awards presentation changed considerably from previous years. We started with a 10:00 AM brunch and got into the awards presentation by noon. The festivities were held at Treasure Island Resort and Casino, in Red Wing, MN. This new idea appears to have been popular with the award winners as an even 400 people were on hand to receive their awards and enjoy the afternoon. The reasoning behind changing the time schedule was to allow our award winners and families to enjoy all the activities that Treasure Island has to offer. The indoor water park and bowling alley are always a big hit with the youth racers. For the first time in several years the families had the opportunity to take advantage of the fun and games. McCoy Oldenberg, the younger brother of pro racer Mitch Oldenberg. Lisa Boaz along with Missy and Mike Janovsky did an incredible job of organizing everything and working to collect the thousands of dollars in prizes that we had to give away. Every racer in attendance won some valuable bling to go along with their award. We also had some autographed jerseys that went to several lucky winners, along with an autographed Chad Reed jersey that was auctioned off, the lucky bidder being Frank Jackson, (allegedly bought it for his wife, Chad is her favorite racer). The bidding war between Frank and Kurt Caswell was hard fought with Kurt giving up first. This event is always the highlight of my year. It is an honor and privilege to recognize the racers that put in the time, training and determination to race the series and earn well-deserved awards for those efforts. We all know the amount of work, training, dedication and money that it takes to run the series. The 2017

season consisted of the races best ten finishes, this is down four races from previous seasons. Next season will see several changes to our Motocross program this includes an added featured event and shorter regional series with awards for the top three in each class within each region, in addition to our D23 full season awards. For more on this watch the website. Quad Motocross saw a three class winner in Trent Hilmerson. Trent won the Mini Production 6-13, the 90cc mini production 8-13 and the Semi Stk 90cc 1315. Congrats to the triple class winner. The Tibbetts racers took home awards in three classes, Ahley won the Womens class while brother Beau won 16-26 and placed second in the Open A class. Perennial old guy Mike Barnhart took third in +30A while second went to Russel Strack, and class leader Zeb Kittelson. Open winner was Neil Larson, followed by the aforementioned Beau Tibbetts, with Quad class rep Cody Anderson coming in third.

On the two wheeled side there were 331 members that received awards. There was one three class winner. Josh Boaz took the top honors in Schoolboy 1 and 2, along with the 125cc class. He was also one of our Loretta’s competitors. He has an exceptionally busy year between district events and qualifiers. Our Women’s class was once again strongly represented with a full ten awards presented. The winner for the 2017 season was Sophie Johnson followed by Trish Hoover and MX newcomer Miranda Tweeton. Open A winner was non other than Nick Jackson owner/operator of Black Diamond MX Open Quad C racers

Nelson in the 85cc 12-15 and Supermini. Austin Aspros took the top honors in the highly competitive 14-24B and 250B classes. Austin will be moving up to the A ranks next year. Avery Long won two mini classes with his performances in 85cc 9-11 and 85cc 9-12. These are but a few of the many racers that put in the time, training and effort to earn year-end awards. Our class winners ranged in age from four to almost seventy. That is a wide range and it was great to see the over 400 on hand to receive the recognition they worked so hard to earn. It was a great season, and 2018 will be even bigger and better.

Schnabel Doubles Takes two wins at annual charity ice race Wallace Lake, West Bend, WI - February 11 By Gordon Lunde

irt Track/Ice Racing local legend JR Schnabel put on a riding school at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Washington County annual benefit ice races on this second weekend of February at Wallace Lake in West Bend, Wisconsin. Eddie’s Lake House was packed when I arrived at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Riders, crews and spectators filled the host bar from door to door in anticipation of the day’s races. Hot food and hot chocolate were served on the patio and the bar stayed full all day and well into the evening. Many bench races were held before, during and after the real races! There was an unscored kids race before the main events and many youngsters came out to show their stuff. Fun was the name of the game and they had a ball. The first actual race of the day was for bikes with AMA legal ice screws in the tires. Some 82 teams, consisting of 120 riders, turned out for this event. These races are set at only 1½ hours each, and many more riders are choosing to ride them solo.

and passed for the lead. After that, JR, on the West Bend H-D 450 Husky put his head down and ran as fast as he could to build a gap. The front runners caught back markers early and Janisch had a little more trouble getting through the pack than Schnabel, costing him several seconds. Then, in a case of pure bad luck, as Janisch was passing a plow truck, the plow driver changed direction of his plow and pushed a wall of snow right in front of Jesse’s front tire. He did all he could to keep control, but there was just too much snow and he went down. Unhurt and the bike unscathed, he returned to action but just couldn’t make up the difference. JR cruised on to the win followed by Janisch and third place Lance Wollin on the Sunset Tavern machine. Schnabel and Janisch were the only riders to finish on the same lap. In race two for bikes with AMA or Canadian tire screws, Schnabel went to work right away and put on a ice racing clinic. After switching wheels and tires 20

on his Husky, JR made it look easy as he built a steady lead and eventually won this race by a full lap over Cameron Cornet, on his self sponsored Yamaha 450 in second. Mike Wiedmeyer finished third aboard the 328 Powersports Honda. This race has been running for thirteen years, all for the benefit of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Washington County. From these events, promoter Scott Schneiberg and Moto-Ice, have donated over $40,000 to the organization. Great job Scott! We look forward to next year

nce again Spring Creek Motocross Park ended their Super Series season with a well attended awards ceremony. On October 14th at Treasure Island Resort and Casino almost 600 people showed up to enjoy a good meal, socialize with moto friends and collect awards and some of the many prizes handed out through out the night. As always it was a busy weekend setting up and presenting awards to some 350 award winners. Each rider that earned an award received a gift bag with many useful riding and racing items, everything from riding gear and tee shirts to bike maintenance items. All of the racers that entered every race received specially designed perfect attendance Pit Boards. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special awards included most points and three class champion. Josh Boaz was the big winner, taking the honors in Schoolboy 1 and 2 along with

the 125cc class title. Wyatt McGrath garnered the High Point award having raced four classes and amassing well over 700 points.

The presentations followed a well put together and tasty buffet. The first order of business was a Veterans recognition. All of the veterans in attendance were

called up to the stage for a photo and they were presented with a ticket to the 2018 Pro National. A special thank you to all who have served from the owners and crew at Spring Creek MX Park. Drawings for door prizes went on through the awards presentations and every racer there had their name drawn at least once. Among the big ticket prizes were autographed jerseys from Jeremy and Alex Martin, RJ Hamshire, MacAdoo, to name a few. Jason Vaith of Vaith Sled and Sycle provided ten 5 gallons cans of VP racing fuel. There was a Snap On pressure washer and an air compressor going to more lucky winners.

Once all the awards were handed out and class pictures taken by friends and parents, the excitement really built as all in attendance awaited the drawing for the two bikes to be given away. Mike Larson and KTM provided a KTM 65 for the youth classes. The KTM was won by Hannah Oakes, needless to say both she and her parents were on cloud nine when her name was drawn. The second bike was a Kawasaki 250F. With some 250+ amateur racers on hand, all of them convinced they were the winner, Matt Dohrn of Plainview Powersports drew the winning name, which is only fitting since he provided the bike. The name he pulled out of the box was Jerry Bumgardner, one of our +60 racers. Jerry has been racing the same 2005 Honda 450 for the last 12 years. He was definitely due for a new ride and was all smiles as he was photographed with his new bike.

This season ending event is always one of the highlights of the year. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a few months off to recuperate, but more importantly it is time away from the race track to just enjoy laid back time with friends and family. Everyone left with awards, goodies and looking forward to another season of fun and competition coming in spring 2018. New Richmond, Wisconsin - December 16 Cedar Lake Arena Indoor Series, Rnd 1

ace #1 of the Cedar Lake Arena 2018 Winter Series kicked off on this mid-December Saturday afternoon. Even with temps outside being pretty darned cold... snowy roads for travel, the turnout was excellent, with a couple classes needing to run heat races to help determine a final moto order. The crew had the all new track for the season well prepped and most of the riders looked like they were fully ready and up to speed. Not surprising considering the indoor arena had been open to riding for several weeks already. After a warm up session and riders meeting, everyone was set to get out and race. For those sitting trackside in the bleachers it was a little chilly, many others found complete comfort in the heated viewing area. Riders said it was just right and everyone was happy to see the first gate drop. Early in the afternoon the 4-8 year old 50cc Injected riders left the gate to have ten riders file through the first 26

turn. Carson Wittman immediately took over with Tatum Swygman in second, also on a KTM. It took much of the opening lap for Tyler Brindamour to secure third ahead of Leighton Oswald. As the laps counted down the four leaders spaced out some, leaving a close battle

over fifth that lasted all moto. Tristan Penders finally shook Kameron Hagedorn in the last lap to finish about a bike length ahead. The second moto was a near repeat as Wittman led Swygman, Brindamour and Oswald around the track. The same battle developed over fifth again, this time Hagedorn got the best of Penders for fifth place in the moto and overall. The only constant in the first 50cc 7-8 moto was James Schaffer running out front. After grabbing a nice holeshot he went to work stretching his lead with every lap. The action was all behind him as the next three riders were closely matched. Beau Noaeill was in second right away and then spent the entire moto in a fender to fender brawl, trading positions with Brecken Maas and Coen Abel. Soon enough Bentlee Walker joined in and they kept the spectators and their parents attention right to the checkered flag with Noaeill sliding back into second on the last lap. In the second moto Schaffer picked up where he left Atwater, MNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Braxton Kragenbrag off earlier, leading the pack. charging hard in the 65cc 7-11 class.

opening a lead by the end of the first lap. As he did his thing out front, Walker quiHe’s definitely become comfortable on etly worked his way up to second from a the 250. This time Smith figured out it fourth place start. Noaeill wasn’t able to was easier to start ahead of Dertien and finish after a rough tumble. Couper Couette stepped it up after a sixth in moto one to pass into third by mid moto, ahead of Louis Oswald and Maas. Schaffer took the overall ahead of Walker (5-2) and Maas (3-5). The Open B class was dominated by 2017 Loretta Lynn National Champion, Carter Biese. From the gate drop, Biese put his Husqvarna out front and never looked back. Levi Dertien was running second with a lot of pressure from Yamaha mounted Dylan Smith. Brad Hetchler took a stab at the front runners as well before sliding back a few spots to finish behind fifth place Tommy Olson. Just past the moto’s half way point Smith found a way into second to set the final order. OCRacing backed Biese went to work immediately in moto two, Luck, WI’s Rowan Penders airing it out in 65cc 7-11. 28

hold second to the end, vs fighting for a pass like in moto one. Those two rode evenly spaced to the end ahead of Brady Peterson who worked into fourth for good after a seventh place outing earlier. Altman climbed up a couple spots for fifth late in the moto to wrap up fourth overall. Carter Biese dominated the motos in 250B as well as his Schoolboy 12-16 class, making for a perfect six moto sweep through the afternoon. The 65cc 7-11 class had sixteen entries and ran heat races to set up the evening’s final moto. In the first heat Jamison Mutschler grabbed the holeshot as Cade

Groen quickly worked up to second. As those two ran out front, Zaine Randall held off Braxton Kragenbrag for third. The second heat saw Brody Barth dive into the lead through the first turn with Jeffrey Rinkel and Rowan Penders right behind. Those three held their own out front as Kyler Hagedorn pulled into fifth by the third lap. The final for the young riders was an exciting one. Groen charged to the front when Mutschler made a mistake and Barth took over second leaving Mutschler to play catch up. Pax Racing/ Full Throttle rider Mutschler did work up, as he explained after the moto. “I got the holeshot and then in the sweeper I hit the same rut I was using on my 85. With this smaller bike though I got stuck in it and dropped back to third. A lap later the guy in second crashed and then the next lap the leader fell so I took the easy win by just keeping it on two wheels. The track is great and the jumps are a lot of fun.” After Groen slid out he eventually dropped out of the race. Barth recovered nicely to finish second while Randall, Rinkel and Braxton Kragenbrag rounded out the top five. 30

250C as expected was a big class, tonight filling two heat race gates with a total of twenty-five entries. Again, both motos count, your first moto just adds in with moto two once all the riders are combined where your best average wins out, tie breaker going to the second moto. In heat one, Isaac Moyle made it look easy as he gapped the others by the second lap. Lexi Dyekman ran in second early then slid back. Nolan Darr kept his Husky pegged to climb up to second place early with Kody Beck following him to third ahead of James Waldron. The second heat had Riley Fisher lead all the way. After a bunch of position swapping Kyle Klectschka took over second and put a two bike gap on Taylor Otey, Colten Tuomi and Andrew Clark. The track was really busy when the combined twenty-two riders came off the line for the second moto. Once again, Moyle had the

right reaction and pulled the holeshot. Iowa rider Moyle after the moto, “I have another moto coming up so when I got the good start I just took it easy out front. I wanted to carry my speed around the track and stay consistent, and it worked. I haven’t been here in three years and they have improved quite a bit even since then.” Moyle ran out front all the way as another Iowa rider climbed his way past others to eventually finish second, doing so on his 125cc Husky. Nolan Darr, “I didn’t get a very good start and had to work through the pack. I almost crashed a couple times riding so hard, but made it up to second. A lot of my passes came in the deeper ruts in the back sweeper. Guys would go wide around them but they were fast if you could hit ‘em. This is my first time racing here and its a lot of fun. I made the trip over from northwest Iowa. I’d like to thank my dad for all his support.” As these two stood out, there was plenty of other close racing all around the track. When it was done, Kyle

Klectschka held off a charging James Waldron and Colten Tuomi for third place. The SuperMini class saw two very quick riders fight for the win through both motos. Jordan Biese grabbed the early lead to force Avery Long into spending the next three laps looking for an opening to make a pass. After some good clean racing it came down to the long whoops section where Long found an advantage for an eventual pass for the win. In the second moto the two were again close off the start, this time Long held the lead. Biese kept on him early but Long was dialed in and rode to another moto victory. Garret Becker put his Kawasaki across the line in third both motos to edge out fourth place finisher Nash Romleski (6-4). PDR/ Race Tech/ 100%/ Fly/ Black Diamond backed Long after winning his fourth moto of the night, (other motos in 85cc 9-12), “Biese block passed me in the first moto so after I passed him in the

whoops I started protecting my inside lines better and it worked out. I’m getting good starts and the track is awesome. I rode well in all my motos so far but almost lost in the last lap of this one when my rear end kicked out really bad. I’m not sure how I landed it but I’m really glad I did.” The day’s racing ended right around 6pm and many of riders already had plans to be back the next day for some open riding time on Sunday before heading home. All these riders seem to have found the perfect way to spend a few weekends staying tuned up during the winter, doing what they already love to do. LTM, Fly year-end Banquet Caey, Illinois - December 9 By Rollanda Pinckard

ne sport, one season, two tracks, Lincoln Trail Motosports celebrated the mx racers, families, track personnel, office folks and sponsors that made 2017 a record breaking year. Celebrating a season that stretched from February though October, the LTM banquet was the place to be on December 9th. Usually the track personnel get a mention at the end for all their hard work. But let’s be real – without Tim, Drew and Lisa (creating and working the tracks, schedules, and property), without Mayana, Shay, Kelsey, Amber (scoring and in the tower signing up, giving payouts and awards, keeping the scores and rules straight,) without Chris, Jesse, Dave, Pacen, and Wendy and the rest of the

crew on the track, (in the doghouse, at the gate, waving the checker, and flagging the track), without Dave Henry on the mic … these races wouldn’t happen. You guys rock!

The 400+ banquet attendees came into the hall and were greeted by Adam Wright and Austin Woodrum with their Fly Racing set-up from Western Power Sports showing bikes and gear. But it was the electric balance bikes that had the kids mobbing the Fly guys. These strider-type bikes have a throttle & brake but are sized for the littlest ones. Dozens of future mx racers put miles on these bikes at the banquet. True to form, LTM had one-of-a-kind awards for the winners of the Fly Showdown Series: old-school open face helmets with the racer’s name on the side. Helmets were awarded to the 128 racers that took the gate for at least eight of the eleven races. Each also went home with swag bags from Fly filled with goodies and the coveted LTM “Champion” hoodie. But to the Iron Men, Women and Kids who made every race, there’s the 100% award, and 37 racers received this high honor. Then there’s the highest award – the three Champion trophies. Congrats to Mason Lutz who won the Youth division, Dillon Cantrell for the Amateur division, and Aaron Carter who was the class of the field in the Vet division. Though the banquet stage stayed busy handing out awards, the evening itself felt like a big family reunion. Stories of awesome crashes, buddies battling, injuries overcome or still healing, plans for

AMA District 16 Banquet Another fun and very successful weekend Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin - Nov 11 Annual AMA District 16 Banquet

t may almost sound redundant if you have been reading any of our coverage on the annual banquet from the past - but this was a fantastic weekend! This is billed as the biggest weekend of the District 16 season, and for good reason. Hundreds, like well over five hundred riders and family members attended this mid-November weekend at one of Wisconsinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most recognized tourism destinations, the Wisconsin Dells. The Kalahari Resort was again our host - as they will be for the next two years under then new plan. With the special rates our group gets on rooms for the entire week- Trials top finishers

end, many families came early on Friday and spent the weekend having all sorts of fun with their motorcycling family. While many were enjoying themselves at the pool or game rooms, the District 16

clubs, promoters and officers were busy with meetings that started Friday evening and went through the weekend. This is the same weekend where everyone comes together for planning the new sea-

son. 2018 schedules were organized. Any rule tweaking and changes get worked on as well as a number of other little things that all add up to make a new season roll out well for all our fellow riders. Part of these meetings brings elections of District officers and referees. There usually isn’t a list of individuals standing in line to fight over this volunteer work... but we are fortunate to have just enough of the “right” people involved every year to make this all work. One of our founding fathers in District 16, Dave Arva has been slowly stepping away from some of

the work load the last couple years. Arva not only helped organize District 16 many years ago, but he shouldered the motocross referee and points keeping responsibilities as well as representing us all with the AMA. He also oversaw the rider registration. Any part of that list is a big deal and he did it all. In 2017 he stepped away from the referee and registration work. This past year he passed the torch for the points keeping to Scott Biese. Luckily we managed to keep him involved with the AMA for another season! His many years of dedication can’t be appreciated enough.

We also saw our Enduro referee Curt Shomberg take a step away after several years, leaving the position in the hands of Steven Kacmarowski. On the Hare Scrambles side of racing, Karl Lueschow also found it to be a good time to let someone else step in and luckily Matt Sather was willing to take over. Kacmarowski added, “With many thanks to Curt Shomberg for the years he has served as Enduro Referee, I take the reigns and look forward to the task at hand for this year and many to come. everyone in District 16, thank you for the years of support! Our sport is better because of the time you have given. Thank you also to Steven and Matt for stepping in. If it wasn’t for volunteers, none of our racing would be as successful as it is. A cool and new twist this weekend was the forming of a effort to get youth riders involved in our sport - both as riders and as future leaders. This is a group of youth riders that have the support and guidance of D16 board members, but this will be all their program. The group kicked off their first meeting with a live broadcast of their conversations and already have plans for youth riding and training days... geared to introducing motorcycling to other kids. District 16 Secretary and banquet co-ordinator Melissa Ellingson helped kick this program off. At the end of the long weekend, when asked what stood out as the best part of it all, she quickly said, “The thing that stands out to me the most is the support that poured in for our new Youth Off Road Riders group, developed with our young district riders. It truely is a testament to our district’s strength and eagerness to grow!” Everyone in the general meetings was supportive and welcoming to the

youth riders and their efforts. It will be exciting to see where they go with it all in 2018. By Saturday afternoon most of the meetings were done. Organizing the hundreds of awards, jackets and drawing prizes had been done. Now the real fun began as the doors opened to our large banquet room, one of two we use! All those joining us for the full banquet and dinner arrived first for another excellent meal. Meantime, the lines had grown in the hallway as the other couple hundred guest coming for the awards ceremony only arrived. That’s a cool option offered

now, as a rider you have a choice to eat at one of the many local establishments and pop in for the awards only an hour later. Once everyone comes together the next roughly two hours is spent recognizing everyone for their past season’s accomplishments. Thousands of photos are taken by family members. Speeches and thanks are heard through the two rooms from riders.... everyone is happy and celebrating. Cocktails are flowing. Dozens and dozens of conversations are being enjoyed... everyone is having a great time their own way. Kids are racing around

having fun, being kids. This is banquet time! As the awards presentations wind down the main room once again fills to near capacity... its time for the drawings. There are some prizes just for those in attendance, and another slew for those purchasing single, or an arms length of tickets... all part of the fun, but you have to be here to see and be part of it. We could right several paragraphs on the fun of that process alone. We’ll just say it’s part of the fun and proceeds help make the banquet even bigger and better. ages available. Biggest of all, two brand new Kawasaki Z125’s made possible by Sportland2 and two Yamaha generators from sponsor Pro Motorsports in Fondulac. Add in thousands of dollars in other

goodies and you get the feel for how fun drawing time is. After all that is done riders and family members options for the night continue. Many stuck around for dancing and more celebrating as we had some really fun music from a local DJ. Others went to the bowling alley/sports bar area... kids activity areas or whatever they wanted. Fun here can last well into the night, if you so desire. As we said in the beginning, this was another very awesome weekend and there’s no doubt next year will be every bit as enjoyable. None of this could have happened with out the year long efforts of the many District 16 volunteers, again led my our ban-

quet coordinator Melissa Ellingson. The outstanding awards, jackets and long list of drawing items come from generous and supporting businesses that deserve our recognition and support all season. DOC (drinkdoc.com), Fly Racing and Sportland2 top the list. Also playing huge rolls were; Golden Eagle Homes, Pro Motorsports, County Cycle, Fuse Fuels, Rob’s Performance, Scott, Pit Posse Motorsports, Narell Racing, Port Yamaha, Action Awards, Switched, Rapid Angels MC Club, Town of Rome, Beaver Cycle Club, Lake Country RV and the Furniture Studio. If you attended this year, thank you for joining us. If you missed it... don’t make the same mistake in 2018.
