changes made to the +60 class, there will now be two Masters +60 classes. Master 1, no A class racers and it will run one at Hare Scrambles. In enduros the promoter will decide on C out of full course. Masters 2 will run the 2 hr course with the A/B classes, and full course. This will be the +60 Masters Championship class. There is a change in Enduro scoring in that all checks that are non restart or start control checks will be timed to the second- times totaled using minutes/ seconds. There were classes added and redefined in Flat track. It was nice to see a Women’s class added as we are long overdue for that. 122-Open cc need to be 14 for 250cc and 16 for 450cc. Hopefully we can field a Shaina Texter level woman racer. There are 2 Mad Dog classes Mad Dog 1 16+ 122201cc 4 stroke air cooled 2 valve engines. Mad Dog 2 125-250cc 4 stroke 2 valve engines. Senior +40. Houligan 750+ class. The Beginner C class will now be a points paying class. Hillclimb had changes to the King of the Hill- it will be restricted to the top 10 fastest times. The annual meeting was held in December, board members were elected and I’m happy to say that we have several new members on the board. Mike Quinn presented the results of a study on neck braces. There was a medical study performed concerning neck braces and the myths surrounding them. The data was taken from a ten year study by Great Lakes EMS: •8529 Patients in the study •4726 Without Neck Brace •3803 With neck brace Findings: •Critical CSI: 89% without Neck Brace (239 without vs 26 with) •Death Due to CSI: 69% without Neck Brace (4 without vs 1 with) •Non Critical CSI: 75% without Neck Brace (702 without vs 109 with) •Clavical Fractures: 443 without neck brace vs 291 with •CSI = 89% more likely without a neck brace. Unbraced CSI also more severe. *Note: CSI = cervical spine injury As you can see from these results, the myths surrounding the use of neck braces do not hold up.. Keep in mind when weighing the option to use or not use one a fractured clavicle is nowhere near as serious as a cervical spine injury. Our D23 commission members gave reports on their meetings. Al Mathwig represents us on the off road commission, Tom and Karen Umphress represent us on the Recreational riding commission, and Mike Quinn serves on the Motocross and Medical Safety Commissions.

was announced in mid February as a new four event series hosted by Motosports Park in Byron and Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut, Illinois. The theme - Keep Moto Fun! The series kicks off in April with two early rounds in Byron before resuming later in the season in Walnut. While details are still coming together, we already know there will be factory contingency involved, and several other fun twist. Those include Free racing for 50cc 4-8 and Junior class riders. A Two-Stroke Open class and each round will have a guaranteed $1500 purse. There will be series-end awards and all events will be scored with Mylaps transponders - those being included with your race fees. For more details as they become available keep an eye on the two track websites. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Welcome to the 2019 season. It is starting out to be quite year, with record snowfall in some parts of the state. We’ll have to wait and see if it will all be gone by the our season starts. Hopefully you’ve been enjoying your winter playground, and been working on your physical conditioning because those early races can be tough if you haven’t been. There are several rules changes that you need to be aware of before the season starts. I will recap a few but I advise all of you to go to our website and download the D23 rule book. One big change from the AMA and reiterated in our book is that in order to be considered as starting a moto the racer must cross the finish line at least once. There were only a few changes in MX one of which is the addition of a 50cc shift and shaft class. This is NOT the same as the Loretta’s shift and shaft. This class is a D23 class that will pay points and it will be restricted to entry level inexpensive bikes. The following bikes qualify: Honda CRF50, Yamaha PW50, Yamaha TTR50, Suzuki DRZ50, or JR50, Kawasaki KDX50, this is for low tech bikes. No KTMs, Cobras, Lems etc., will be eligible for the class. The purpose is to encourage more participation from new riders. We need to get new riders and racers attracted to the sport. In the Off Road discipline there were

Flat Out Friday - Milwaukee Milwaukee, Wisconsin - February 15 UW Panther Arena By Gordon Lunde

aren’t many rules after that except for some safety mods. There were three Hooligan classes to separate riders by talent level, and personal choice of which class best suited them. JV Hooligan was for beginning rid-

t’s a cold, blustery, February morning in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Rush hour is on and traffic is crawling through the busy streets. People bundled up in cars, on buses, give strange looks to a large group of people waiting in line at back door of the UW Panther Arena… with motorcycles? Hell yeah, it’s Flat Out Friday! Hundreds of riders from around the country have converged on this sports arena to show their talents on a Dr. Pepper sprayed concrete track. The long lines on this cold morning had to be a strange sight to folks unfamiliar with the event. When the organizers of the Mama Tried motorcycle show thought of adding some racing action to spice up the show weekend, they contacted friend and racer Jeremy Prach to see what could be done. What he did was pull together local AMA race organizers to help run the event and manufacturer Bronson Bauman Expert/Charlotte Harley-Davidson to spon- Kainz Memorial class winner. sor it all. Of course with H-D involved other sponsors jumped at the opportunity to support the program. It’s been four years now and the show keeps getting bigger and better each year. Over time, the classes keep getting fine tuned and this year saw a great show with classes for a wide range of machines and rider abilities. The Hooligan class has increased substantially over the years and was one of the largest classes attended this time around. Hooligans are twin cylinder over 750cc bikes originally built for street use. The preferred machine for the class is the Harley Sportster. Stock chassis must be retained, but there 6

the finish. Good racing followed in the next few places, but Schmidt ran away to the winner’s flag. In the Women’s division, Hannah Lang took the holeshot and led all the way to the checkers with Leah Orloff, Malary Lee and Kalen Thorien battling for the runner-up spot. In the end, Orloff took second over Malary Lee. The Open Hooligan event was a barn burner for the win between Nick Mataya, Rich Heverly and Danny Mischler. All three were going hard for the victory. As they pushed and shoved their way around the track, Mataya eventually got the best of them all. Heverly nabbed second over X-Games Hooligan Champion Mischler. In Open Amateur, Brady Lang wasn’t going to be denied the win! Getting off in

third place on lap one, Lang made a pass on The main event of the evening is the Robert Bush for second place, then set out Charlotte Kainz Memorial race. through traffic was a matter of taking chances and using all their skills. Harley Davidson team rider Jarod Vanderkooi, riding a Honda in this event, got the jump and led the first two laps with Bronson Bauman and Cory Texter giving chase. On lap thirteen Bauman went to the front taking Texter with him over Vanderkooi. Those positions remained the same until lap twenty-one when James Monaco passed Vanderkooi and held third. Vanderkooi got past Monaco again that lap and held onto third for the finish. Bauman and Texter had a hot battle for the last twenty-two laps fighting through the heavy traffic. Bauman held on for the victory over Texter. Other classes of the night involved a youth class, women’s class, a bicycle race for young kids and a goof ball class for anything one can dream up to ride. There were fourteen total classes for just about any talent level and race machine you can think of. It is a truly fun, family oriented night of good racing and entertainment. D23 Off-Road Banquet Little Falls, Minnesota - January 26 By Paul Otto

I

t was that time of the year when the OffRoad riders gather around and rehash the stories that made the 2018 season so memorable. Yah, some of the stories might be a little embellished or fall short of what really happened, but that’s part of the entertainment. Besides, unless there’s a witness to the situation no one can deny the story. Once again, a huge thank you goes out to

the River Valley Enduro Riders for taking on the daunting task of putting everything together for all of us to enjoy. A new menu was also favored by all attending. Thank you to all the vendors whom donated all the great prizes that where handed out. The list is too long to mention but was featured in all the year-end booklets for folks to recognize. Please take some time to thank these vendors by supporting their businesses as they continuously support our sport. Every year there is an award that goes to

the best or favorite race of the year. Riders vote on what they enjoyed the most and for the Hare Scrambles the award went to Kensington put on by the Midwest OffRoad Riders. For Enduro, Akeley was the big winner put on by the Paul Bunyan Forest Riders. If you haven’t participated in either of these events it might be a good idea if the riders are putting them as their favorite. Congrats to both clubs. Let’s not forget about all the other clubs that put in countless hours of work putting these races

This youth group proves we have a strong future.

Logan Kittock was awarded the big trophy, being the Overall winner in both Hare Scrambles and Enduro. CYCLE USA, March 2019

on for all of us to enjoy. It’s very much appreciated by all and we Thank You. Many awards were handed out but anyone who participated during the season was a winner for just being part of the greatest sport around. For many of us just throwing a leg over the bike and enjoying the day riding with friends is what it’s all about. At the end of the day very few will venture into the pro ranks and make a career of it but don’t stop dreaming. Just remember its amateur racing put on by volunteering clubs. At this point the annual news letter should have hit your doorstep. Applications should be filled out and sent in before March to retain your number. Remember you can sign up online now. There’s a $5 charge included for fees associated with online charges. Parents please get ahead of the game and get your kids AMA waiver cards to help with speeding up the sign-up process. For 2019 you must run your assigned district number. If your bike number doesn’t match your district card you need to get a temp number at sign up or you will be disqualified. No questions asked. Don’t be that rider. We have another great year ahead of us looking at the 2019 event calendar and we will be racing before you know it. Great 2018 season everyone. 12

Cedar Lake Arena Motocross New Richmond, Wisconsin - January 19 Cedar Lake Arena Indoor, round 2

T

he 2019 Cedar Lake Arena indoor motocross season kicked off back in December, and we were excited to catch round two of the racing on January 19th. Dry roads (for the most part) made it easier for riders to travel this weekend, with

entrants from six states attending. The almost snow free winter up to this event didn’t mean winter hadn’t arrived - it was plenty cold out, making the comfortable arena conditions attractive for both riders and spectators. The track was all new from last year pretty much a common theme as it is torn down right after the indoor motocross sea-

son ends for indoor short track racing, then youth auto and even dog shows during the sumer. The youngest of today’s riders kicked off the action with Bentley Farrel quickly taking the lead in 50cc Oil Injected 4-8. It took some great effort during the first lap before Kaleb Davis locked down second place ahead of another tight battle between Seren-

Braxton Kragenbring rode to a strong second overall in 85cc 9-11.

ity Salas and Leighton Aguirre. Farrel stretched out a little larger lead with every lap to take the day’s first win as the order head through the top four. Jennings Gall crossed in fifth ahead of Drake Savelkoul, Jase Kratt and Weston Otto as Mason Holt ran into problems and wasn’t able to finish. In moto two Farrel doubled his efforts off the line to grab the holeshot. From there the race was his to lose, but he rode mistake free and stayed out front. It took Salas most of the moto to work up to second ahead of Davis and Aguirre. Savelkoul stepped it up late in the moto to beat Gall in for fifth. Justin King took full advantage of a good holeshot on his Honda to lead the twelve +30 class riders into the first jump section. Aaron Deer was running second on his Husqvarna until mid lap when Aaron Pendergast slid to his inside, then jumped past. Once in second, Pendergast put his head down to try and close the gap on leader

Izaak Farrell finished fourth in the 250C class.

Michigan’s Ranger Flinchum swept both motos of the large 250C class to take a win home. CYCLE USA, March 2019

King. Meantime, Jason Ritt was all over Deer’s rear fender, looking to move up. The laps clicked by with King holding just enough momentum to grab the win by two bike lengths over Pendergast. In the final lap Taylor Otey worked past Dean Anderson and then the battle for second between Deer and Ritt came to an end as the two came together and they both went down. They dropped back to the rear of the pack as Otey inherited third ahead of Daniel Schoumaker and Josh Grover. Anderson got held up in the crash and settled for seventh behind Shawn Ringsaker. The running order in moto two was set early as Pendergast edged out King as they came into the first turn. With Pendergast out front, King could only hope an error would give him a chance as the pace seemed even quicker this time out. Otey was running third and Anderson jumped past Ritt over the large finish line triple for fourth at the end of lap one. That was it for position changes and Pendergast rode to victory with his 2-1 scores. As could be expected here at any race, the 250C class was large, meaning there would be a twist. Two first moto heats would be ran with a final combined moto helping settle the overall score for the best finishers. Riders not qualifying for the final ran in a coni race of their own so they still got two motos of fun in. 250C heat one saw a great race develop with Izaak Farrell leading Jonny Tompkins and Vincent Gregerson right away. Soon enough Hunter Yocom and Trey Hettich were going at it, right behind everyone else. Tompkins was on a mission, making every attempt possible to get around Farrell. As they pushed into the second lap it paid off as he snuck past entering one of the track’s large bowl turns. Once there he led to the end as the order held with Hettich taking over fourth ahead of Yocom, behind Farrell (2nd) and Gregerson. The second heat was another fun race to take in. One consistent was Ranger Flinchum - grabbing the holeshot on his Suzuki and taking off for an easy win. Garret Becker rode a really hard first lap to fight past Brian Goerdt for second. Once there things got a little easier as he opened a gap to enjoy the rest of the race. Andrew Clark gave it his all as well... wanting to get around Goerdt. He pushed right to the end but Goerdt rode really well for third. Sam Haas wrapped up fifth. Fourteen riders took off from the gate in the 250C final. It took two starts to get

everything off clean as the first left two riders down and needing some assistance. Ranger Flinchum picked up where left off in the second heat, out front. Andrew Clark was riding real well in second after getting ahead of Hettich. Farrell was fourth with Yocom fifth. On the charge, Tomkins, the first heat race winner was stuck in mid pack. That didn’t last long though as he was quickly up to sixth, then past Yocom. A lap later and he was running third ahead of Farrell. By then the leaders were gone and time ran out for the speedster showing he had the ability to make it interesting out front if not for the poor start. PBR, Bell Helmets, Clark Concrete,

Plainview Powersports, FXR backed Andrew Clark, “I started out pretty good and then tried some different lines to move up and that just back fired on me, but I gave it my all. The track is a little slick in spots but overall really good and the fast lines have all moved to the outside. I started racing a few years ago and ride here pretty much every weekend to stay on the bike.” Michigan’s Flinchum, backed by Mika Metals, Maxima Oils, Fly , “After I grabbed the first holeshot, to have it red flagged was sort of a let down as it was the best start I’ve had all day. I got it again and then rode hard for the first three laps to get away and ease off on the last laps. Being smooth and consistent out there makes all the differ-

ence. I was here for the first race and without any indoor riding in Michigan, even with the drive this is great.” 50cc Open 4-8 brings a fun mix of riders together, today there was fourteen in the class. Both motos had KTM mounted Carson Wittman out front and riding extremely well. In moto one, Wittman opened a solid lead right away. Ryder Salas rounded turn two in second with Cooper Lanning, Vincent Astorino and Mason Bair close. That held for a while before Lanning ran into problems, dropping out. Salas rode well for second with Astorino close in third. Bair also put in clean laps for fourth as Tatum Swygman rounded out the top five, just ahead of Peter Grover.

The youngsters put on a show with many nervous parents standing trackside. Astorino grabbed a big holeshot on his Cobra and led them all through the first lap. Salas was in second and first moto winner Wittman was up to third by the end of the first lap. Wittman wasn’t accepting anything but a win as he passed both the riders in the next half lap to take over out front. Astorino held a good pace in second while Salas went down in a bowl corner and lost a lot of positions before getting restarted. Cooper Lanning had a bad first moto but was making up for it this time, passing his way up to third by mid race. Grover locked down fourth as Brayden Hinck finished fifth. Wittman took the big overall win with Astorino’s 3-2 good for second overall. In the day’s fastest race - the Open A rid-

ers clicked off some impressive laps and showed their technical prowess on the track for sure. Justin Craft crushed the race into turn one to lead Joe Perron, Thomey Dertien and Nick Schnagl in the ten rider class. Before they finished the first lap it was apparent that Perron wasn’t content in second, going after Craft at every opportunity. Back in fourth, Schnagl was first to make a move as he dove under Dertien for third. As they closed out the second lap, Perron made his pass into the lead through the starting area. Nick Jackson had a bad start but methodically worked his way up to fourth by the final lap, bringing Jacob Wilke up to fifth as well. Dertien slipped back to sixth. After finishing second in moto one, Craft was left at the line with a bike problem in

the second moto as Perron rolled out to a holeshot and eventual second win. Schnagl made a first lap pass on Nate Kohnke for second as Wilke was also looking to move up. It took a couple laps before Wilke found a way around Kohnke for third, setting the final order with Dertien in fifth. Schnagl after finishing second, “I struggled with starts earlier and tried a different technique and almost ended up with the holeshot on my 250 vs these 450’s. I rode smart to just finish second after the third in moto one for second overall. The track was pretty good if you stay high in the corners. I want to give a big thanks to Joe at Boumeester Electric, FXR, Nitro Lubricants and Pro Taper and my dad for all their help.” Carson Wittman dominated both motos of the fourteen rider 50cc Open class.

After a red flag forced a restart of the +50 class, Barry Weinzirl led Mike Dertien into a moto long battle for the win. Those two never gave an inch, taking it right to the white flag where Dertien found the right line at the right time for the win. Bruce Schaapveld sat in third all moto with fellow Yamaha rider Tim Rhode and Rick Thorud behind him. Moto two also had a close race out front, once again Dertien got the best of Weinzirl for the win. Schaapveld didn’t finish, opening the door for Rhode and Thorud to finish 3-4 in the moto and overall. Tatum Thorud put in two excellent rides in the Women’s class for the overall. Makayla Peterson settled for third behind Kendra Tutt in moto one, but turned the good start in moto two into a second place for the moto and overall as it was Tutt’s turn to accept a fine third place finish. Cherish Fischer went 4-5 for fourth overall ahead of Bella Johnson (6-4). The 85cc 9-11 class saw a perfect 1-5 consistency through both motos. Leaving no doubt, Cade Groen ran off with both wins as Braxton Kragenbring also held a nice gap ahead of Kaiden Fischer. Chad Schmitt and Carson Lanning went 4-5, settling into those spots by the end of the first lap in each moto as well. It was another great day for racing... indoors that is. Most to the riders we spoke to had spent Friday night riding, or were planning on staying over in town to ride again on Sunday. It is all about time on the bike for many of them... the racing just helps keep the motivation level high as everyone works through the long winter.

spectators the answer was simple - go outside, brave the cold and either race or watch the twenty-second Steel Shoe 3 Hour Endurance Ice race. With the temperature hovering around the zero mark at race time the ice was hard and plenty thick to race. Once again The Tiki Bar and Grill on Kettle

Moraine Lake hosted this winter loving group as the new owners showed off a great new interior. New this year the AMA combined with the Steel Shoe 3 Hour to make this the AMA National Ice Finals so we got the treat of watching some up and coming 65cc and 85cc riders show off their talent. The youth riders got first crack at a modified version of the course and after a couple quick warmup laps fourteen bikes lined up for their gate drop. Ethan Ebben led the 85cc bikes down the start straight, slipping back to fifth by the time lap one was scored. Dominic Huey was first to complete the 1.5 mile course. Huey ran into problems on lap two leaving the lead to Colby Bondeson with Trevor Wieling right behind him. Wieling took over the lead on the next lap and held off several challengers until lap ten when Huey was once again out front. Huey held the lead to the finish as Blake Bradish settled into second. Kasyn Callies and Colby Bondeson battled back and forth the final five laps for third. When the checkers flew Bondeson owned the final podium step. The top five riders finished sixteen laps for a total of twenty-four hard fought miles. Afterwards Huey talked about his race “It feels good to be the first Youth winner at the Steel Shoe race. I had a crash on lap

two but I didn’t give up and just kept trying. My bike was running good thanks to my dad changing the jetting and getting everything ready yesterday. Some areas were pretty tight and I wish it had been a little more open so I could sweep through the corners even faster. I really like to go fast. Thanks to my mom and dad, Seth Pickett for hooking me up with tires that really help me win races, and everyone else.” The 65cc riders were next out and Jack Brucks took the early lead, also beginning an ongoing battle with Drake Callies. Callies got out front on lap three but Brucks wasn’t giving up and soon was back into the lead, then grabbing the win at the end of fourteen laps. Callies finished second with Rocket Altman third. At 12:30 the big bikes were lined up waiting their turn on the 7.5 mile Jeff Fredette designed course. First out were the Elite class bikes battling for the AMA national title. Trey Johnson (Johnson Auto Body) was out of the start straight first with the team Cornfield (Hunter Even/ Ken Even) bike close behind. By the time lap one was scored the On Empty (Kyle Johnson/ Davis Fischer) bike was in the lead with Beaver Cycle Elite, Team Cornfield, and Parker Lange completing the top four spots. At the

one hour mark Team Cornfield was still ahead of Beaver Cycle with On Empty slowly falling back to third just ahead of Johnson Auto Body who had slipped past Parker Lange. During hour two Beaver Cycle was running hard and took over the lead. By the time hour two was wrapping up Beaver Cycle was in the class lead with Parker Lange second, then Johnson Auto Body and On Empty also in the top four. Beaver Cycle was forced out with a mechanical on lap fourteen and Parker Lange took advantage to run out front to the finish. On Empty crossed the checkers right behind Lange while Team Cornfield made a late race charge to grab third. The next start wave was Ironman as Jacob Jesko edged out Jason Schreffler and JR Schnabel for the early lead. Schnabel got around Jesko on lap one and for the re-

mainder of the race these two stayed out front. Lance Wollin and Jason Larson rounded out the top four at the end of lap one, battling for position until lap five when Wollin was forced into the pits with a flat front tire. Wollin fought hard once the tire was replaced but the best he could do before the finish was fifth place after getting back into fourth for a couple laps. By the end of lap five Schnabel was not only in the Ironman lead but had now taken the overall lead as well, only to have Jesko back on his rear tire by the end of lap eight. Joe Bibbler ran a steady pace and in the final hour managed to catch and pass Wollin for fourth. Schnabel ground out seventeen laps on the 7.5 mile course for a total of 127 miles. and then stay consistent as the track gets rough. It was a bit harder today starting in the second wave behind the Elites, I think we were forty seconds after them. I was able to get the lead in my group pretty quick but then we began catching the Elites. You can’t rush it and have to keep inching up and then passing them one at a time. My pit-crew kept track of them as I counted down each pass finally knowing the leader was the only one left. Once around him I was able to get a little lead and finally went in for some gas and then came out and cruised the last hour. By the end the track was just brutal so it was good to be riding my pace and not chasing anyone. I did have one tip-over mid race, and lucky just

Thanks to West Bend HD, Arai Helmets, Moose Racing, Motion Pro Racing, Maximum Oils, and all the other people always helping me. Next out was the Heavyweight Bike class (with 38 bikes they were divided into two waves) and when the flag dropped the 328 Powersports (Jacob Weidemeyer/Tylor Skodras) bike edged out the rest of the first wave down the start straight. Once lap one went into the books Beaver Cycle Team 2 was out front with 328 and the Harada bike (Craig Pickett/Westley Westesson) close behind. Beaver Cycle stayed out front for the next thirteen laps but in the end due to a penalty (they suffered a mechanical and continued the race for fun on a spare bike) they finished back in nineteenth. ers. At the end of lap 1 The Whiskey Throttle bike had the lead with Rob’s second and Team KLIM (Scott Fittshur/Benny Carlson) third. Rob’s made a move on lap two and pulled out front beginning to put distance between them and the rest of the Middleweights. Rob’s held onto the lead for the next two hours but by the time the checkers flew Retriever Racing (Pat Ryder/Terry Hahn) had worked their way out front with Team KLIM, Whiskey Throttle (Ethan Rosine/Emmett Sund) and then Northwoods GP (Mitchell Thomson/Vinnie Studt) rounding out the top four places. The Lightweight bikes were the final wave. Schweighardt Concrete (Ben Schweighardt/Cole Godfrey/Ed Smulders) jumped into the lead ahead of US Chrome (Braxton Callies/Luke Padrutt/Jennifer LaTour/Ryan Callies), and Nacho Momma (Elias Saigh/Jennifer Froh) down the start and never looked back holding the lead for the next fifteen laps. US Chrome kept the Schweighardt bike in sight but just couldn’t close the gap before the finish. Nacho Momma was forced out on lap six with a mechanical. Once again the Steel Shoe 3 Hour was able to get enough last minute cold to set up a great ice surface as temperatures plummeted in the week before the race and then benefitted from a fresh snowfall so Jeff Fredette could once again plow out an exciting course. The promoters want to thank all of the Sponsors that make the race possible: Pro-Gold Screws, Suburban Motors HD, Fuel Cafe, The Mack Family (in memory of Steve Mack), Pro Plates, Light Shoe, and Moose Racing. Without the Sponsors this great event and the money they raise to assist injured riders wouldn’t be possible.

Mille Lacs Ice Racing

#111 Brock Zychowski earned the Iron Man award, competing in five classes.

Onamia, Minnesota - February 2 By Tim McBride

T

he Midwest Ice Racing Association held round three of their five race championship series on Mille Lacs Lake in Onamia, MN., where the weather Gods were shining down on them in a fabulous way. The last two weeks the Upper Midwest has seen record breaking sub-zero

temperatures. This week’s event saw the mercury cruising up to the mid-twenties with light winds which made for a delightful day of ice racing action. Quad racing extraordinaire Brock Zychowski was among the most successful of contenders as the Brockstar Motorsports Rath Racing sponsored rider topped all four quad classes on the day, and for the first

time took part in a motorcycle class (Open C) and finished a respectable eighth place out of nineteen riders, which was the largest class of the day. “My first ever race on the bike was a social media hit for us as well!” explained Zychowski afterwards. “On the quad we were on fire and ended up with four overall wins. We’ll try to keep the momentum rolling and see if we can come home with the championship!” Zychowski, who hails from Iron River WI., won the Quad A 250/450, Unstudded Open 16+, Open A, and the Dash for Cash. The heavily populated Open C bike class was won by Rowdy Sorenson who topped the Open C 14-29 age group as well. DJ Keeler was also a multi-class winner as he took the overall in the Open B bike class and Open B 14-29 class.

The eleven rider combo 2-stroke/ 4-stroke Mini class was won by #119 Tucker Reuikke (currently behind the #119 with red helmet Aiden Nelson) CYCLE USA, March 2019

A heated battle in the Open A final where D23 flat tracker #42 Jeremiah Lindberg crashed heavily out of contention. #393 Neil Pede finished 1-1 to score the overall win.

The Open A bike class, a twelve rider affair saw a host top-guns go at it in dramatic fashion. The first moto was won by Niel Pede ahead of a heated three way battle between Jason Larson, Cole Sindler and Jeremiah Lindberg. The second moto saw the District 23 flat track AFT Singles fast guy Lindberg out front in the early laps trying to improve his fourth place moto one finish

until disaster struck on the checkered flag straight away. Lindberg crashed and was immediately run over by Pede which sent his bike tumbling end over end after slamming into the snow bank. “We were going into the first corner after the finish line and I hit some breaking bumps going into the corner and washed the front end of the bike,” Lindberg explained afterwards. “I

was sliding to the outside of the track and he (Pede) ran over the lower part of my back while trying to avoid me.” Lindberg was sporting some pretty nasty cuts and scrapes and will probably be sticking to the bed sheets for a while. “My back is still sore, but it could have been much worse,” Lindberg said. Pede remarkably was able to make the singlefile restart and went on to score the eventual overall victory. Every racer knows the efforts to promote a race/ championship are at the least - astronomical. Foxboro, WI natives Diane and Denny Almer, have been promoting the series since 2013. “We have a loyal following with a lot of great riders,” explains Diane Almer. “We are always encouraging anyone to come try the sport out. We average about 100 entries at each event. With the help of our gracious sponsors we are allowed to continue to give out large payouts in both A and B classes. We have a dedicated crew of about thirty people that help at each race. It’s a lot of work and time, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.” #112 Rowdy Sorenson leads the pack in the nineteen rider Open C class.

he Beaver Cycle Club promotes short track ice races in conjunction with the Otter Street Fishing Club every year and uses the opportunity to put our sport in front of a huge crowd that gathers for the festivities. The fishing club has a large tent with food and beverages. Games for the kids, raffles and door prizes go on all day. It’s a great event for the whole family. Escanaba, Michigan’s Tyler Livingston put his Ox Motorsports/ NTech/ Zambons Motorsports/ Hyde Self Storage KTMs out front in three different classes on the day. In the 250 class, Emmett Sund got the jump at the green flag and led the first lap. Livingston pushed his KTM out front on lap two and ran there the rest of the race. Sund took second followed by Ethan Rosine. In the Open Amateur event, Livingston benefitted from Clay Johnson’s mishap in turn one and took the lead. Johnson remounted but was out of the lead pack. Brock Schwarzenbacher gave chase along with Sonny Johnson. The pair had a great

battle for second, but were never able to close on Livingston. Schwarzenbacher took the runner-up spot over Johnson. The 450 class brought about one of the best races of the day. Sonny Johnson got out front early and led through lap one.

Ethan Rosine and Livingston fought hard for second place staying close to Johnson. On lap two Rosine and Livingston got by Johnson when he ran wide in turn one. Lap four saw Livingston move into the lead and take the checkers on the next lap. Rosine

Annual District 16 Banquet Another winner as over 500 attend Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin - November 10 AMA District 16 Annual Banquet

T

end for everyone, often starting on Friday or even Thursday. The weekend schedule was changed up some this year. The Friday night motocross club/ promoter meeting was moved to Saturday morning... to run along with the other break-out meetings for each discipline - be it dirt track, trials and all the others. Friday night now focused on a new Youth Off Road Riders gathering. This fantastic movement to get more new and youth riders

he second weekend of November... cold outside, usually a little ice or even snow already - yet it marks the biggest event of the AMA District 16 season. Indoors, no motorcycles or ATV’s running, just a bunch of like-minded racing/ riding enthusiast enjoying a great weekend. The destination has remained the same the last several years and we see no change in that ahead - the Kalahari Resort in tourism driven Wisconsin Dells has been excellent. It is a centrally located destination for much of our family and draws members from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota in addition to the expected large Wisconsin and Michigan crowd. While some come for Saturday night only, many make it a full weekend. The overall attendance continues to grow as many extended rider family members and friends now join us, even if it is just for the discounted rooms and some fun times outside of the banquet activities. The waterpark, activity centers, bowling alley, bars, food options and even a movie theatre make this a busy week- Some of the youth Dirt Track award winners having a good night.

involved in riding and racing was spearheaded by Melissa and Todd Ellingson... with the leadership of the group being quickly turned over to a group of local youth off-road riders to act as the group’s leadership team. Melissa on the activities Friday night, “Friday night we added an extra banquet for our Youth Off Road Riders to celebrate with all of the beginner riders that experienced riding a dirt bike for the first time. It was great to have clubs and

promoters be a guest at this event to support the upcoming generation of riders. We had balloon fights, a dance party and glowing trophies. We were pumped for our special guests; privateer Heath Harrison and local Carter Biese. 2019 will have more surprises and options for our riders to make the most of their weekend at Kalahari!” Saturday’s day long meetings involve all the District clubs and promoters. Rules are reviewed and tweaked as needed. Officers

are selected and a lot of work is done in a very condensed time to get the following season planned. It is amazing what can be accomplished in such a short time by this group dedicated to the sport we all enjoy so much. Fortunately, all the past board members/ volunteers have stayed on and we are excited to include Miranda Amerling as our new District secretary. Her skill set will go a long ways to helping the team stay organized and communicating well in 2019.

At the end of the meetings, Matt Sather who took over coordinating the Hare Scrambles/ Gran Prix racing efforts with District 16 two years ago was quite excited about how things are going with the offroad racing. Sather, “It was great to see the HS/GP schedule fill up quickly and give us the opportunity to have almost every race inside of our district. We have had a huge amount of good feedback on the GP races and with the support we are seeing from the

tracks, I'm sure they will have their own series in the near future. We also have more HS races because of it, which is great. I'm very excited to see a great season of racing in 2019 with some awesome new events added to the schedule." Once the meetings wrap up a group of volunteers jump in to assist banquet coordinator Melissa Ellingson with the final details in the two large banquet rooms. Awards are organized, drawing displays set and all just in time as the lines start to form in the hallways well in advance of the official event opening. Banquet time is finally here! After an excellent sit down dinner was enjoyed by several hundred, a couple hundred more attendees flow into the room as there’s alThe Fly Racing team kept busy between ways the option for a “awards only” tickets showing off gear and handing out door prizes. for riders and their guests. Like last year, two rooms were used for passing out awards after dinner. This way each discipline isn’t rushed and everyone can enjoy even more time with a smaller group of friends. Ken Schuck, the District 16 Treasurer and very long time Madison Motorcycle club member has been attending these events for as long as anyone. Schuck, “I have been going to the Awards Banquet over 40 Hare Scramble youth riders with their awards.

years. Once again it was great to see families, friends and competitors cheering for everyone from under six to over sixty years of age. There was lots of smiles and bench racing as the group picked their favorite raffle prizes and caught up with old friends.” Danny Vrana, the Dirt Track Coordinator was happy with not only how his earlier meetings went, but was thoroughly impressed with the fun and turn-out for the

banquet. “For dirt track, it was one of the best banquets we’ve held. Almost all the awards were received by the racers and we finished with a great party in the banquet room afterwards. The earlier meetings for dirt track were well attended by clubs, promoters and racers. We had a lot of good discussions on new rules and how to better the 2019 season. I can't wait till spring to hit the tracks.”

Obviously the center of attention at the banquet is the awards - and the recognition of a season’s hard work by the riders. Passing out hundreds of beautiful awards and jackets takes a couple hours and is time well spent. Like Schuck said, there’s nothing but smiles in both rooms. This really is a party and a fantastic get together - that keeps getting better every year, with more and more attendance..

Everyone was having a good time.....

CYCLE USA, March 2019

Scott Biese has been District 16’s Motocross coordinator for a couple years now and has seen it improve even in that limited time. Biese, “I’ve only been a part of the banquets for a few years but in that short time you can see the difference in the excitement from the families and racers attending the banquet and accepting awards. The atmosphere is even more enjoyable and energetic. I’ve also noticed the vast majority of awards are picked up at the banquet. Just two years ago there were three complete boxes of awards left. This year it was down to a partial box.” Once all the awards are passed out... the speeches made, and special moments captured by dozens of family members holding up cell phones for photos, everyone reconvenes in the large room. It is drawing time... cocktails are flowing and enthusiastic conversations are being enjoyed to the point where it is actually pretty loud in the room... a good loud for sure. Kids are running around having fun, being kids. Everyone is having a great time their own way. Then it quiets down, a lot... two motorcycles courtesy of Sportland2, two Yamaha generators made possible by Port Yamaha, a ton of cool stuff from Fly Racing, County Cycle, Narelli Racing and others will be drawn for and everyone wants to make sure not to miss their lucky number being announced. The support of these sponsors along with DOC Energy Drink, Golden Eagle Homes and all the others make this huge part of the banquet possible - and we need to thank them at every opportunity. Even after all this, the night isn’t done yet. Riders and family member options continue and many stay for dancing and more celebrating as we had some fun music from a very talented DJ. Others went to the bowling/ sports bar area... kids activity areas or whatever they wanted. Fun here can last well into the night and it always does even if that means quietly sitting back in one of the

nice rooms, taking in all of the last several hours. It was another awesome, fast moving weekend for everyone involved. If you attended this year, thank you for joining us. If you missed it... don’t make the same mistake in 2019. Mark the calendars now for the second weekend of November - make your room reservations in late September when the option becomes available - then join us for a weekend of fun. It absolutely does not matter if you are an award winner or not, this is just a good time with great people! See you here in November, until then, make the most of the warm and “hopefully” perfect weather coming in 2019!

Warren Martyniak was recognized for his support and true passion of this sport with the Lofquist Racing Award.
