CYCLE USA, November 2105

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... that takes place starting in January of 2017. The age for amateur classes will be 12, however the age to ride a 250cc bike will be moved up to 14 and a racer will have to be 16 to compete on any bike that is intended to be raced in the 450 class. This rule was supported by all the manufacturers and insurance carriers. There will be no changes to the eligibility of the 150cc 4 stroke. Our awards have been voted on by the board. Watch the website for the details on your award as you may be able to submit a picture of yourself for you award. For those not submitting a picture there will be a generic picture on the award for each type of racing. This year’s awards are canvas style prints, so be sure to get a good picture for the award and the awards book. Dates and times for all of the awards ceremonies are on our website or will be soon at www.armca.org. The procedure for submitting a picture is on the website as well. As always, we are researching methods to grow membership but as current members you are our best recruiters and ambassadors. Every new person you can bring to our events improves the level of competition and helps the district financially. I hope to see as many members as can possibly make it at the annual business meeting. The future of sport is heavily reliant on the grass roots participation of our volunteers. Until December, ride on the few nice days we have left and get a training program put together for the off season. It won’t be all that long until we are starting a new one. Congratulations from the Board of Directors to all of our award winners and class champions in all disciplines. We will see you at the awards ceremonies. Mike

By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Our season will be in the record books by the time you read this. It started out as one of the wettest in history, but somehow we managed to hold events on every weekend scheduled. Kudos to all the clubs and promoters for getting the job done well, even though Mother Nature wasn’t the most cooperative. We will have all of our numbers and statistics finalized by the time the annual meeting comes around in December. Saturday December 12th is the date of our annual meeting. The sanction meeting and risk management workshops take place in the morning. We should have a finalized 2016 schedule ready for the Annual Business meeting that will start at 1:00 P.M. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on American Avenue in Bloomington. This is an important meeting for all members. We have a few rules change proposals that will be published in our fall news letter prior to the meeting. We also will hold election of officers at this meeting. We are always in need of volunteers to help on the board. If you have any interest in how the district operates, please show up, feel free to volunteer for a board position at the meeting or by sending an email to me and we will get you on the candidate list. Nominations will be open at the meeting for all elected offices. The first week in October the AMA held the 48th Annual congress session. District 23 had four congress people in attendance. Al Mathwig representing Off Road, Tom and Karen Umphress representing Recreational Riding and myself on the Motocross committee. Congress went smoothly in all disciplines. There was a lot of work that will clean up Try the Cycle USA the AMA rulebook along with a Classifieds... few new items. Woodstock MX Closes 2015 Woodstock, Illinois - September 25 Woodstock MX Stadium MX

A

fter weeks of rain, and cancelled events, a final last ditch effort was made to get in a season closing event, and it worked. A near perfect night welcomed all the riders back to the popular fairgrounds, and the Woodstock MX team was ready to serve up a very good night of racing. Following the heat races, the +30 class kicked off the main events, and Christopher Dicicco took control. He pushed past Jason Haessig coming out of the first turn, and led wire to wire. With Dicicco leading, Haessig kept it close for the first two laps, then a gap opened up. Meantime, Eagle, WI’s Lance Gilbert had been working on Lonnie Urban, and closed the deal as they started the third lap, taking over third place. This set the order to the finish with Tommy Gerlach finishing fifth. Anthony Edgerton continued his winning ways in the 85Jr class. He took the heat race win, and carried that momentum into the main where he led every lap on his KTM. Ryder Beth and Zachary Brunner had a good battle over second, with Beth coming out on top, as Anthony Vargas finished fourth. Edgerton and Beth topped the Open Mini class as well, just ahead of newcomer Deegan Cooley. Cooley then went to work in his 65Jr class, taking that win on his Woodstock KTM. Peter Parenti finished second behind Cooley, as Riley Busse was third, after a tough heat race where he finished back in fifth. The 250C class had some great racing as

as well. Jackson finished fifth in the most action filled class of the night. Bauer after the moto, “I got the holeshot in the heat race and pulled away for the win. Then in the main, I was in second and just got a little too confident on the first lap coming down the start area and went over the first turn berm. It was still a lot of fun even with that. I made a couple passes, so it was good. I’d like to say thanks to my aunt and uncle for taking me to all the races this year. I really appreciate all that help.” Always cool to see out here at Woodstock is the large 50Jr turnout. You don’t see it at a lot of tracks, but its a norm here. Fifteen riders came off the gate in the main, and these kids may be the youngest of the evening, but their time here this summer shows, as many of them get around the track very well. In the heat race, the very quick Mikah Carpenter had to work his way past most of the class to take the win. When they came off the line in the main, he showed the other way to win. Pull the holeshot, Nickolas Lorenz won and just run away from both 250 and Open B everyone. And that he did, leaving some close racing behind. Ryder Skodros was in second, leading Kain Jennison, Jaxson Schiller, and Jayden Adams. The four were glued to each other until on the second lap when Skodros lost a little time, slipping back to fourth. From there, Jennison did his best to hold off Adams. The two stayed close right into the last lap, finishing in that order with Schiller fifth. No doubt it will be #211 Brandon Jackson and Luke fun to see these Debell battled in both 250 and Open C.

usual. Dylan Frisch had the right idea, and used his good jump off the line to take the lead out of the first turn. Heat race winner Blake Bauer was all over him as they ran through the first lap. Coming back into the first turn area, Bauer had a big drive... too big as he went over the berm and gave up several spots. After Bauer’s mistake, Brandon Jackson was running second. Coming up through the pack by mid-moto, Tyler Dennett made his pass on Jackson for second, while Frisch continued to pull away in the lead. On the last lap Bauer slid up into third, passing Luke Debell who had just found a way around Jackson

youngsters work their way through 50Sr, and then onto 65’s in the next few years. Speaking of 50Sr, Peter Parenti beat a fast group of them in both the heat and main. Benjamin Blazek finished second ahead of Riley Busse and Owen Bills. The A classes were as fast as always. In 250A, Alexander Nagy timed the gate perfectly, pulling the holeshot with a number of fast guys on his rear fender out of the second corner. Right away Woodstock KTM rider Travis Sewell went to pushing Nagy. Half a lap into the moto Sewell dove into an inside line in the sand corner, tucketed the front end and down he went, dropping back to sixth. Midwest Action Cycle/ AXO/ EVS/ Spy backed Nagy after the moto, “It was good out there. I got the holeshot, and was getting pressured by Sewell right away. Not sure if he made a mistake or what, but then I had this gap behind me. It closed back up at the end as we got into lappers, but I stayed smooth, and avoided any mistakes to come home with the win, so it was all good. I come out here as often as possible when time allows around the nationals. They always do a great job here, and have the track in good shape.” Behind Nagy, Kyle White ran really well with Cody Vanbuskirk on his heals every inch of the way. As they started the final lap, Sewell entered the mix, and made a last lap move past Vanbuskirk through the rhythm section for third. In Open A Cody Vanbuskirk led early with Sewell again trying to move up, and hold off Kyle White at the same time. Nagy was behind Dale Kathan in fifth. Two laps in and Vanbuskirk hung up in a corner just long enough to give Sewell an opening down the next straight, and that was all he needed to take over, and go on to the win. Nagy went down on the last lap in the whoops, and Erik Utech took over fifth. In 250B, Nicholas Lorenz led all the way. Ian Malinowski traded spots with Jason OBrien a few times early on as they fought for second. But, then Jacob Lorenz moved up to pass OBrien in the fourth lap, then pass Malinowski in the last lap to finish second.

Kenosha, WI’s Lorenz capped off the good night, by scoring the win in the Open B class as well. SSI/ Lorenz Excavating backed Lorenz after locking down his fourth win, and second class topping ride of the night, “I got all my holeshots, and rode smooth in each of my races, getting the win each time. The track is really good and tacky, and everything is just clicking for me out there tonight. A good way to end the season.” There’s rumors of an expanded program coming next year, maybe including another facility... if that works out, this well run program will become even bigger and better. Either way, we left the track on this evening, already looking forward to next Spring. District 23 MX Bonus Event

National champion and Minnesota native Jeremy Martin put in some fast laps at the event... adding to the “big” feel of the weekend.

T

he new District 23 Motocross Championship format arrived with huge success! Two single race events with, three moto format races, in a regional championship style were added as the last two events of the District 23 season. The membership had been asking for a method to determine a true champion. The events brought out the best of the best. The inaugural event arrived at Berm Benders Raceway, and Kurt and Kelly Caswell were well prepared. The weather was perfect and the track was in excellent shape for the great rider turnout. There

was a good representation by the District 23 board to support the days activity as well. The program started with three rounds of practice for each class and went into moto one on Saturday and worked halfway through moto two by the end of the day, and concluded with the final half of the second motos and all of the third motos on Sunday. The highlight of the event was the current twotime National Champion Jeremy Martin arriving to race in 14-24A and Open

D23 Board Members with Berm Benders’ Kurt and Kelli Caswell worked together on this special weekend.

A. Jeremy, a life-long District 23 member, declined to take any points so as not to disrupt those chasing the District 23 Championship, while putting on a dominant riding presentation, and taking the time to visit with every young rider that showed up to his trailer. Jimmy Diedrich took two overalls home, but had his hands full getting it done, going 6-1-1 and edging out Scott Robinson (1-2-5) by two points in the overall for +40B, and going 1-2-1 and nipping Jamie Koch 2-1-1 by three points for the overall in +30B. In 14-24C Robbie Marty (3-2-1) finished one point ahead of Aaron Blackstone (1-1-5) for the overall, and Ryder Hanninen (1-1-2) fought a tough battle against Travis Richards (2-2-1) taking the overall by three points in 14-24B. Jake Loberg was a multi class winner taking 14-24A going 1-1-1 and winning Open A with a 1-2-1 in a stacked field of top riders; with Sam Wise on his tail both motos. It was worth the price of admission to watch these guys line up with Jeremy Martin and run seven lap motos. With a District 23 Championship on the line in the Women’s class, Katherine Vanderwerf, Mariah Braastad and Anndi Ertel

arrived ready to sort-it-out after a long season of back and forth. Braastad’s 2-3-2 put her third overall, and Ertel’s 1-2-3 gave her the runner-up position, while Vanderwerf and her 3-1-1 and the overall closed the final standings points gap and forced the Championship determination into the final race of the season. In +55, Gary Johnson going 3-1-1 barely escaped the cagey Jack Parenteau and his 1-2-2 winning the overall by a single point, and in +60 Michael Quinn went 1-1-1 for the overall. In +30C Matthew Nornberg took the overall with 1-2-1 results, but Jeff Miller was right there to make him earn it going 2-1-2, finishing only three points behind. 250A brought a stacked gate with Gavin Kadlec, Sam Wise, Justin Craft, Philip Maus, Spencer Henrickson and Jeremy Martin. Martin’s presence definitely had everyone looking for their best per-

formance and Kadlac’s 2-1-3 consistency was enough to beat Wise’s 1-5-1 and take the overall on the day. The two-day event arrived with high anticipation as many attending had never participated in a three moto - single race format. The weather was absolutely perfect both days, the track was well prepared, and the turnout was huge. The gates were loaded with skilled riders looking to finish up the season against the best in District 23, and earn their Championship honors. The Caswell’s went above and beyond to get everyone in and parked, to keep everyone informed from beginning to end, and provide a first-class racing venue. If you are looking to measure your riding skills against serious competition, the last two events of the District 23 motocross schedule appear to be the place to be. The racing form 50cc to Open A did not disappoint.

David Spizman won all three motos in his +50 class.

Dave Williams pushing to a fourth overall in the +40C class.

Another Hot Day at Pine Ridge Athelstane, Wisconsin - September 6 By Cody Wills

A

s the season winds down, along came an unusually hot Labor Day weekend with highs nearing 90 and humidity at its peak. It provided another obstacle to the already tough track, and steep competition making up 360 entries looking to get their last shot at racing the fantastic Pine Ridge Raceway track one last time in 2015. The heat as it turned out, was matched by equally hot racing! There were a boat load of two strokes on hand, many drawn in by two different classes that Pine Ridge offers them. The 2 Stroke B/C and Vet 2 Stroke classes have become quite popular. The 2 stroke B/C class had some good action. Jordan Nielsen’s weapon of choice was a YZ250. Nielsen started the first moto with a poor jump out of the gate, leaving himself plenty of work to do. Kole Olson on the other hand made his job easy by getting out front right away followed by Cody Sigler. Logan VanKirk was up in the mix as well. Nielsen started to push his way through, and fell just short of reaching Olson, finishing second, followed by Sigler in third. VanKirk crossed in fourth with Shawn Jones rounding out the top five. In the second moto Nielsen made sure to get himself a better start, making his way into the lead and holding Olson off for the win and overall. Sigler was con-

sistent with 3-3 scores and Jones improved his moto one performance to finish fourth, and pick up fourth overall.

#316 Cole Prichard dominated 250C going 1-1.

CYCLE USA, November 2105

The +30 Two Stroke class saw Aaron Stroebel put his CR250 out front early and never look back. The battle behind him was between Jacob Shallow, Kevin Guseck, Dave Bickel, and Craig Wallace. Wallace rung his YZ125 out to get back in the mix for the top spot against the bigger bikes, making his way to third. Shallow locked down second for the moto. Guseck finished right behind Wallace in fourth with Bickel fifth. It got better in the second moto for Wallace as he quickly worked his way to the lead, where he finished after a great ride. Stroebel found himself in second, but still locking down the overall with 1-2 scores. Wallace’s win in moto two was enough to move him up to second overall. Dave Bickel went 5-4 to upgrade to third with Shallow not showing up for moto two. Picking up a nice third place in moto two was Chad Nyberg on his sweet retro KX125! 85cc 9-13 was dominated Elijah Tetzlaff, who has been on a roll this season

some race day. Mother Nature didn’t hand us the rain obstacle, it instead handed us the heat and humidity, but most riders showed there true conditioning, muscling through it. Moto two was another run away show by Tetzlaff. This time Haiden Waelchli, who had trouble in the first moto and was unable to finish moved his way to second quickly followed by Anderson. Gravedoni struggled, having to work his way from behind. Still, by the time the checkered flag came out he had moved up to fourth, landing him a third overall with 2-4 scores. Anderson’s 3-3 was good for second overall behind Tetzlaff’s 1-1 performance. The A classes were simply dominated by Hunter Sayles! Sayles won every moto he entered. Adam Reek was the second most consistent guy, picking second overall in both Open A and 250A. Other good rides were Dylan Ziolkowski grabbing a third in Open A and David Watzka finishing up third in 250A. As the race day came to a close, all we could do is look back at a great weekend. he King City Dirt Riders hosted the final District 17 hillclimb of the 2015 season at their club grounds near Mt Vernon, Illinois. The father-son duo of Matt and Levi Peters, from Neoga, Illinois, went out on top, each claiming three class wins, while Jared McKay, also from Neoga, delivered the fastest ride of the day. Levi Peters’ first win came in the 125cc class where he came from behind to overtake Christian Fitts, who topped the hill in 6.135 seconds to take the first round lead. Levi dialed it up on his second ride, and delivered a class winning 5.783 time on his YZ125. Fitts was faster also, but his 6.098 second run was good for second, with Corey Simmons third. Levi’s first round 5.153 time on his KX250F was good for the 200cc class win, with Jake Tackitt second with a 5.294 second run on his KDX200 and Brennan Sowarsh third. Levi had to come from behind again in

the 250cc class, as Sowarsh took the first round lead on his KX250, with Troy Camerer close behind on his RM250. But Levi flew his CR250 over the top in 5.213 seconds on his second ride to claim his third win. Jon Creek was close with a 5.220 second run on his RM250 for second, while Sowarsh slipped to third. Matt Peters took his first win in the 450cc, taking the class lead on his KTM450 on his first ride, then beating that time himself with a 4.934 second run in the second round. Cody Jenner was second on his KTM with a 5.099 second first round ride, but crashed hard on his second ride trying to catch Peters. Jenner did win the 600cc four stroke class with a 5.077 second first round ride, then crashed again on his second ride. Peters was second in that class with Mark Dunbar third. Peters’ second win was in the Senior (40+) class where he took the first round lead, then blitzed the hill in 4.853 seconds on his second ride to seal the win. Mike Pulver was second with Jon Creek third. Matt’s final win came in the one run, winner take all King of the Hill class for the ten fastest riders of the day, with a 5.004 second time. Jon Creek was his closest challenger with a 5.007 second run – only 3/1,000’s of a

Jared McKay turned in the fastest ride of the day, his 4.733 second first round ride on his KX540 claiming a convincing win in the 600cc class, as well as the Fast Time of the Day award. Cody Jenner was second in 5.093 seconds with Levi Peters third with a 5.109 second run. In youth class action, Mitch Moran was a double class winner, taking both the 65cc and 85Jr class wins. His 6.405 second time in the Jr Mini class was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. Lilah McGurer and Jaydn Aliprandini were second and third in both classes. Troy Camerer was also a double class winner, claiming the 400cc Stock class win with Corey Simmons second and Derek Valstad third. Troy was the best in the 4 stroke ATV class, with Valstad second. sults of the first moto. In the second moto Dickinson again had the field covered and took the moto and overall win. Behind him, things were shaken up, making for a three way tie for second overall. Travis Ward was on the gas and finished second in the moto giving him a score of 6-2 giving him second overall. Devine again finished third for third overall. First moto second place rider Bogash finished fourth in the second moto, also giving him a score of six but he came out on the short end of it all, with fourth overall. It shows just how close motocross can be at times. Honda rider Michael Westbrook raced three classes. In +50, Westbrook took both moto wins. Kawasaki rider Rimantas Pazemeckas and Larry Bank on his 2016 KTM 450 traded moto scores after Bank crashed early and had to come from the back in the

second moto, giving him third overall behind Pazemeckas. In +45, Westbrook took both moto wins as well. Bank finished second both motos and KTM rider Roland Gomez finished third. In the +40 class Westbrook ran into some riders looking to spoil his perfect moto scores of the day. In the first moto KTM rider Tony Mcvey was flying! Mcvey took the win with Honda rider Arek Kruk second and KTM rider Eran Salzman third. Westbrook was fourth. In the second moto Mcvey again put on a great ride for the win ahead of Kruk. In the battle for third, Westbrook took the position of the moto, and then the overall as well. Salzman finished fourth. How many times have you had a great battle with another rider for a mid-pack finish, and when you were done were saying “that was great fun”? Today, the 85 Beginner class provided outstanding action and racing. The battle was between KTM rider Joey Elliott and Kawasaki rider Jaden Huff. These riders stayed on each other, charging, not following, always looking for an edge over other. It’s clear someone is teaching them right. In the first moto Elliott took the win with Huff taking her Kawasaki across in second. In the second moto it looked like they were tied with a rope, that’s how close they were. Huff had first place and she

Saturday’s practice was cancelled after rain dumped on the track during the week. With all the rain, mud was an issue but it didn’t stop the Joliet crew from racing the AMA District 17 Bonus Points race come Sunday. The crew went to work dumping sand and moving wood chips on the track and the result was a great track for the riders. Hats off to the crew, the track was fun, fast, and provided great racing. AMA Vintage National champion Derek Devine broke out his Moto Nation Sidi Decal Works Kawasaki modern bike to race this event. In the 14-24 class first moto Devine got a good start but couldn’t hold off the charge of Nolan Dickinson, who once in front of the pack was un-stoppable. Devine then had Seth Bogash to contend with. Bogash took second and it set the re-

Michael Westbrook won +45 and +50, then finished third in +40.

With all the extra sand and wood chips they had to apply on the track one would think it would cause an issue with the 50cc classes - wrong! The track worked up perfectly and the mini sized riders were on it!

In 50Jr, Cobra rider Satas Vauspas rocked it - taking both moto wins for the overall. In the first moto Cobra rider Joey Arnold finished second with Joseph Buskirk third. In the second moto Buskirk had the KTM

cranking and took second for the moto and overall, just ahead of Arnold. In the first moto of the 50Sr class, Hunter Savage had his Cobra out front and trucking. Behind Savage the Cobra of Nicholas Stefancik and Ayden Oppenlande on his KTM were in hot pursuit. When the checkered flag flew Savage finished first with Stenfancik second and Oppenlande third. In the second moto it was ditto. Savage again took the win and the overall. After 50Sr, Savage and Stefancik took on the 65Jr class. Being on the bigger bikes with a faster class proved a challenge for both riders. Challenge or not, taking on a faster class will for sure make you a faster rider. In the first moto KTM rider Ian Murphy led the pack and took the moto win. KTM rider Talan Zollers finished second and third went to none other than Hunter Savage. In the second moto Murphy and Zollers finished the same. Third in the moto and overall went to Cobra rider Gavin Batson. How did our 50 riders do? Hunter Savage ended up fifth overall with a 3-5. Stefancik finished sixth overall with a sixth in the first moto and a seventh in moto two. alesburg Motorcycle Club was the host this year for the District 17 State Championships, an event that hasn’t been run for over 7 years. It was a great day for racing and everyone was out and excited to ride the track which isn’t used very often. This weekend offered a tweaked layout and the track was really set up well. The race was not only for District double points, the AMA supported the event with number one plates for the champions of each class. There were also some really special trophies for the top three carved out of wood; it was certainly unique. With some built up jumps and sections going down into the woods and back into the open it made for a really great day of racing. There was a great turn-out with the parking lot packed full of riders. Starting the day off strong was Open A with some impressive competition. In the first moto Alex Nagy took the win, with Brady Neys and Reid Janson rounding out the top three. The second moto dropped down the big grass hill into the first turn with Neys out front getting a good jump followed by Mark Marincic and Nagy. Marincic took a hard charge to Neys in20

side with Nagy following right behind, swapping the order around heading into the first jump. Marincic was out front with Nagy railing a few turns and heading into the woods as Neys was charging back into the mix. After a few laps he was able to reel in Marincic and get past for second. Coming across the finish the line Nagy took the win and the overall with Neys second overall and Marincic coming in third with a fourth place finish in the first moto.

William Tucker swept both motos of the 50cc 4-8 class.

Supermini was another one to watch today with a big group of riders hunting down that number one plate. In the first moto Nolan Dickinson took the win with Kash Schnowske second and Garrett Ward third. The moto two gates dropped to a full charge down the hill, everything was looking even until Ward came hard from the outside to make it around everyone in the first turn. Right on his back wheel was Schnowske and Spencer Whitney. Not long after hitting the first jump Dickinson was on the move after a bad start and had claimed third. Back out of the woods, Dickinson had pushed up to second. Ward held him off through several turns, but Dickson was able to take the lead while Cameron Campbell out of Coal City, IL was on the move, pushing up to third. Coming down to the wire Campbell was able to get down low on the inside of the

bowl turn to take over second and make it stick. Hitting the checkers it was Dickinson with the win and the overall. Campbell took second in the race and Ward followed up in third. This put Ward in second for the overall and Schnowske third after a fourth place finish in the second moto. +50 was a great race today with fourteen riders lining up. In the first moto Michael Westbrook took the win with Rick Grebner and Dave Jolin completing the top three. The thirty second board turned and the second moto was off with Grebner jumping out front with the holeshot followed by Andy Kooistra and Westbrook. Hitting the first turn Westbrook got the inside to take over second with Gerhard Ward following right along on his Honda. They headed around the long sweeper as Westbrook got into the gas to get out front only to have Grebner take it back as they came down into the woods. The two battled until the second lap when Westbrook was able to get out front again. The battle for third raged on as Dave Jolin had now taken over the spot and was pushing ahead as the laps wore down. In the last lap Westbrook made a small mistake that ended up shaking up the order. Grebner took over in the lead and Jolin was able to get by to take second. They fought it all the way to the line with Grebner winning the moto and the overall for the day. Westbrook took sec-

ond overall with the third place finish and Jolin took third overall for the day. 250B was another great race. In the first moto Parker Smith who has been putting in some great rides this season took the win with Ian Pistole in second and Tyler Collins third. The gates dropped on the second moto with Smith hard on the throttle from the outside to sweep out in front of everyone. This left Koty Groutage in second and Stephen Stocklen in third. Heading into the second turn Collins was pushing hard to take over third as the top three went back and forth for several laps. Smith was starting to pull away as Collins kept the pressure on Groutage and finally made the pass for second, following along was RJ Mackenzie on a last minute sprint to make it up to third. Coming across the finish line it was Smith sweeping the day and taking the overall, Colling secured second overall with his second place finish and Ian Pistole took third overall with his 2-4 finishes. It was a great day for everyone out at Galesburg motorcycle club this weekend. With few races being held out here through-out the year, it’s always a special event and everyone is there to have a great time. The track turned out great, it was a really well put together layout that had plenty of varying conditions to keep everyone on their toes and made for fun racing all day. T

he racing was intense as was the anticipation for this event which hadn’t been ran since 2008. Last December the tracks and clubs of District 17 thought it would be a good idea to revisit this event which was sidelined many years ago. The process included a little bit of luck, as the names of the tracks were placed in a hat and were drawn to choose who was able to host the event. What was evident from the start was that Galesburg M/C was very serious about putting on this event, and they had support with an all hands on deck attitude, and even some outside help. Bob Pistole attended the meeting late in December and volunteered to come out and help with dirt work to tweak the track a little for this event. Special awards were discussed, free t-shirts were looked into, and the whole process was started nearly a year in advance. Fast forward to race day. Galesburg M/C isn’t new to big events, they have handled excellent dirt track events for many years and also have a few motocross events every year. Just the fact that their charter is #181 tells us they have been around a long time (181 means they were the 181st club to form in AMA) Just to give you an idea most clubs/ promoters numbers are in 8-9 thousand sequence.

Free t-shirts with some very nice logos and photos, the AMA provided the state championship special Number 1 plate for all the winners. The top three plaques were simply amazing. Six different processes to finish out the walnut plaques with engraved logos and wording. The purse for the A class was excellent and brought in some solid riders. Just about 300 entries showed up to compete (same number of riders that came to this event here in 2005). The nice thing to see was there wasn’t only MX riders there. Dirt track, Hillclimb, Enduro, Hare Scrambles, and Gran Prix riders were represented well at this special event. In fact a few "mx" champions were crowned for the first time who rarely ride mx. This event brought together many types of riders, and made for interesting competition. A true example of what AMA District 17 really represents. All types of riders and racers. Josh Rud from Shift one photography was on hand and stayed the duration to take hundreds of photos and podium shots. The day went flawlessly. It ran a little long, but the riders got solid long motos, five laps for all and ten laps for the two premier A classes, which in today’s world simply isn’t heard of often. They had two ambulances on sight, which didn’t leave the whole day.

Motos clicked off like clock work. Weather was perfect, track conditions were exceptional. The Galesburg club stood tall and did a fantastic job. Future race organizers will have to work pretty hard to stack up to this event. Special thanks goes out to the tracks and clubs that supported this effort by giving extra effort in promoting this event. Ki Tracks, Byron Motosports Park, Tri-City, Muddy Waters, and Moto Pro all promoted this State championship in one way or another. Sunset Ridge MX (Bob Pistole) along with Travis Schnowske’s help in hauling in the dozer, spent two days working on the track which the club appreciated and so did all the riders. Not only did Sunset Ridge Mx show up and help, they closed that weekend as well - not hosting a practice. Stellar. It’s proof that in today’s dog eat dog world, our district organization can come together and get it done. Maybe this will be a sign of bigger and better things to come. There were many that thought it wasn’t going to be anything special. As it turned out it was on of the best race events I have attended in a very long time. Great job to all, thanks for showing what AMA District 17 Clubs and Promoters can do! Gerhard Ward AMA District 17 Mx Director

S

eptember was an eventful month for Aztalan, with the Senior Race, ProAm MX, following an open ride day... not to mention two days of Short Track the following week. Day two of the MX weekend followed a very successful Vet race day, and the Aztalan crew made sure the track was prepped and ready to withstand another big day of racing for the ProAm Sunday. A lot of fast riders made an appearance, which made for a great day of racing and competition. As the 50Jr. gate dropped, Logan Kre-

sal was on the throttle for the holeshot. By the time the riders came through the start area in the second lap, Kresal continued to hold first with Chance Aisbet, Ryder Skodras, Lane Rhyme, and Jayden Adams shortly behind in the fourteen rider class. Skodras found his way into second, now followed by Adams and Rhyme. Kresal wasn’t giving up first, and held onto his position until the checkers. Tyrrell and I had a great battle to start the first moto off and I ended taking the win. The second moto I got out front and put in solid laps to open up a gap and get the overall. The track was good all day long with a large turn out and long motos; the Azzie crew did a great job. I want to thank Latitude Graphics, Rock River, Fly, Scott USA, Dunlop, Gaerne, UFO, VP, Works Connection, Renthal, Factory Connection, Galfer, Dubya, and GPF.” The weather was gorgeous and the turnout was great, which made for an exciting day of racing at the Aztalan ProAm. Aztalan Cycle Club would like to thank all the riders and everyone else who came out for the big weekend! It was a huge success for everyone involved.... +40A delivered a great race tonight with a lot of action going on. They came off the line and funneled into the first turn with Burton Lavens ahead of Bryan Austin and Steve Perkins. Cruising around the second turn into the whoops Tony McVey made the move for the third. Heading through the whoops and holding the inside

egacross opened the gates for the last time this year on the twenty sixth of September, kicking off the final round of racing under the lights. The track was looking great tonight with several fast lines forming through-out the evening, making for some really good racing. The riders were out in force to get in on the last race of the year, and the battles got pretty heated as the night went on. Racing is slowly winding down in the Midwest as the dreaded winter is closer than one would like. It’s wasn’t holding anyone back tonight as things moved right along with some extra pit bike racing for some added entertainment. 250C had a packed house tonight. Nineteen riders signed up for action tonight and at gate drop it was a dash to the first corner with Justin Horter leading the way. Charles McCook and Justin Carr tucked in behind him as they went into the whoops. Carr was on the move blitzing into second, but McCook was staying right on him as they headed into the Dontaye Bates had a good night, finishing second in Open C. back table tops. With McVey was able to take over second and everyone still rushing for positions Carr began working on Lavens. At the same jumped out front moving Horter back to time, the battle for third started to get resecond. Coming around on the third lap ally good with several riders getting Horter tipped it over. Gavin Hawks was bunched up. David Hayes had moved into now third, joining the two up front as they fourth and was able to get past Larry Bank were still right on each other. Coming in the table tops to take over third as down the last turns Carr gunned it out of Lavens and McVey were opening a gap. the inside to take the win. This put McLavens held on for the win followed by Cook in second and Hawks third to end McVey and Hayes to round out the top night.

three, in a fun filled moto. 250A was cool tonight as always with a stacked field. Hitting the first turn is was Joey Dalzell taking the holeshot with Kyle White and Tommy Hofmaster right on him. They went three wide into the next turn with Hofmaster getting a jump out the corner to take over second with White holding off the field in third. Heading into the back of the track Hofmaster got off balance and dropped back to fourth moving Malachi Messenger into third. Dalzell and White being supercross teammates, they were all over each other, know what moves the other would try well. The battle for the lead was great to watch as the laps wound down. With the checkered flag waving, Dalzell took the win having White and Messenger finishing out the podium. 125cc was a very intense race this evening, with it coming right down the last turn to decide everything. Coming off the gate was Mason Schuhler grabbing an early lead followed by Nolan Dickinson and Travis Ward. Coming around the pole into the whoops Cody Barnes was on the move taking over third as everyone was still quite bunched up. Barnes with a fire under him took over second through the table tops but then slid out. This put Dickinson into second and Ward back up into third as they kept changing spots. Dickinson went hard to the inside into the triple to take over the lead with Ward following, dropping Schuhler back to third. Barnes was on the throttle hard coming back and taking third and then right on Ward. Coming to the checkered flag Dickinson made it across the line for the win. Ward and Barnes were taking opposite lines into the chicane and both went inside on the final turn making contact, ending with both going down. Schuhler cruised by for second and Barnes was able to get it moving and up the hill to grab third with Ward right behind ending the night with a very dramatic finish. CYCLE USA, November 2105

The books are closed on Megacross for the season with a great turnout for the last race. It was a fine night of racing as always with so many classes having good races to watch. The track held up all night with no prep needed, and there was several lines through every corner and straight. Things will be starting up again before we know it, and everyone will be itching to ride come spring, so don’t miss out... we’ll see you then!

Unfortunately it will be a while before we get to hang out with our buddies in the pits - and have it be this warm.

2015 Final D16 Short Track

51k Sheldon Wenz and Parker Lange #57 bring the rest of the Open class around turn two.

Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 27 By Bambi Yogerst

A

ztalan Cycle Club ends another short track season, with Mother Nature still dictating when the show will go on! The final races of the season were to take place on Sept. 19/20th, but four plus inches of rain before race day was too much to dry up in time. Fortunately the following weekend was open and the event was rescheduled - so on the 26/27th we were able to wrap up the racing season the right way. Saturday’s event started with the retirement of #20k Al Sumner. Steve Wasser presented Al with a plaque, that all the riders signed. Before the Super Senior main

event, Al led the class out on the track and rode his final lap, waving while the crowd cheered. Race action for Sunday delivered plenty of excitement… The Open class started with Parker Lange and Cody Funk off the line even. Coming out of turn two South Dakota’s Sheldon Wenz and Lange were be side by side as Funk slid back. By turn four Wenz was the leader. Right away Michael Van Langen started looking for a way around Lange. As Wenz pulled away, Lange and Van Langen were still battling as Blake Berry joined in. Coming around to the final laps it stayed really close, with the three holding their positions. The Vintage/ Twin class always brings some fun racing, and tonight saw more of

Seniors main. #18 Tim May and #10 Dan Peterson leading the pack.

the same. Robert Reese got the holeshot on his Yamaha, after a disappointing crash in Saturday night’s main event. Mark Martinich and Danny Murre went side by side into turn two, fighting for second. By the second lap, Reese and Murre were pulling away from the rest of the riders, Reese barely a bike length in front of Murre in the turns, but gaining some distance in the straights. Reese maintained

his edge and took the checkered flag. The largest class both days of the weekend was courtesy of the +40 riders. Twelve riders, two rows, lined up Sunday afternoon. As the start light turned green, Mike Anschutz wheelied off the line on his Yamaha as Dan Peterson and Tim May dove under him into turn one. Peterson just edged out May coming out of turn two. Third lap‌ Peterson went wide giving May the opportunity to pass in turn one, and the Green Bay rider was glad to take over out front. Behind that contest, Anschutz riding in third was getting pushed hard by Sergius Figliuzzi. A couple more laps of close racing, and May took the win to close the season out right. Peterson finished second as Anschutz held on in third. All said and done for the season, I will sign off saying it was a pleasure to be out there with you all, taking pictures and helping pass along some of the racing news during this season. Congratulations

Koch clobbers Cambridge Cambridge, Minnesota - Sept. 19 By Tim McBride

Maddog class #48 Cole Fealy scored a narrow victory over #97 Andrew Hook and #50 Paul Koch

A

MA Grand National #68 Josh Koch picked up a pair of victories aboard his Anderson Plumbing sponsored 450cc Honda, as the North Central Dirt Track Association held round six of the District 23 flat track event at the infamous Norseman club grounds one half mile tourist trophy circuit located in Cambridge MN. The 450 Pro class saw GoMoto sponsored Nick Mataya out front in the opening laps, but it wasn’t long before Koch made a pass for the lead and to score the eventual win as they sailed over the start/ finish line jump. Mac McGrew had the M3 Racing Honda running in third until he crashed, unhurt, giving the final spot on the podium to Jeremiah Lindberg. The Open Pro main event saw Nick Mataya in the lead again for the first few laps with Koch and older sibling Jake Mataya in close formation. This time Koch made his bid for the lead through turn one when Nick Mataya slid off the track and into the grass, having to recover near the tail end of the pack. Koch and Jake Mataya then broke away from the rest of the pack to finish in that order. McGrew used a late race effort to pass Lindberg and finish third.

In the highly competitive Maddog class, contenders are allowed to compete aboard 0-200cc machines. The opening laps saw multiple event winner Paul Koch battling with young guns Cole Fealy and Andrew Hook. Fealy and Hook eventually slipped away from Koch and crossed the finish line in a photo finish, with Fealy getting the nod. Celebrity track announcer Dan Baily finished fourth with Adam Schmidt garnering fifth. In the four wheel ranks, Scott Williams took top honors in the Open Pro division. The early laps saw race favorite Ryan Bruggeman off the track in turn one allowing Justin Berhow to inherit the race lead until the race was stopped due to Bruggeman’s mishap. Bruggeman was

unable to make the restart where Berhow was overtaken by Williams shortly afterward. Williams went on to score the win slightly ahead of Berhow, Open A event winner Andrew Wendorff and Patrick Edmonds. Williams also topped the +25 main event. osh Boaz proved his mastery of the Spring Creek motocross circuit, gathering up three first-place trophies at the latest round of the Super Series. Boaz ran off with wins in his usual 85cc classes. He also jumped up to a 125 to contest Schoolboy, taking the measure of that class next, totaling six moto wins for the day. Boaz wasn’t the only rider to have extraordinary success, but was the only one to pull off three wins. And what a great day it was for everyone in attendance. Cooler weather finally moving in after the late summer heat, it was a perfect day for motobased exertions. The track was in prime condition with the usual Spring Creek-prep and maintenance by Johnny M. and crew.

The aforementioned Mr. Boaz rocketed off the line and into the lead early in the first 85cc 12-15 moto. He clearly had the upper hand and began to build a gap over the valiant pursuit put forth by Izaih Clark and Max Earley. Boaz swept up the win with Clark and Earley maintaining good speed to the flag. Dawson Biermann tallied a fourth place over Gavin Janovsky as they crossed the finish line some brief time later. Moto two featured a surge to the front by Biermann, who led the troops around the track for the first lap with Boaz and Clark on his tail. Boaz cranked the throttle on an extra degree or two and took over control on the next goround while Earley grabbed third when Clark bobbled and dropped back a bit. While Boaz began to pull away Josh Boaz had another big day at Spring Creek.

steadily from Biermann, Clark battled with Dalton Hein and Janovsky, and finally regained fourth place. Then he closed in on Earley on the white flag lap, and drove in for the pass with only a quarter lap of race left. Boaz crossed the line under the checkers with a secure lead over Biermann, then a bit of a gap back to Clark who pulled some over Earley over the last few turns. Hein finished fifth. In the 65cc 10-11 class, Brandon Nelson led every lap with Trevin Nelson applying huge pressure, but Brandon held on all the way to take the win. Cole Marsolek ran well but wasn’t on pace with the top two this time out and took third, some distance back. Spencer Hein and Louie Falardeaux were just a bit back in fourth and fifth. Moto two was somewhat anticlimactic as Trevin Nelson jumped out into the lead early and was pursued to the flag by Marsolek. Hein took third over Falardeaux with a subdued Brandon Nelson rounding out the top five and off the pace with some type of problem. Matt Hendrix took the early lead in moto one of the 250C class and held on to take the win with Tucker Kieffer hanging in there all moto for second. There was a good battle for a bit with Chase Cooper, Justin Evans and Shane Halverson in the

mix for third. Halverson finally broke free to go on to the flag with third. Shortly later a gaggle of riders consisting of Cooper, Evans and Marcus Koester rampaged over the finish line jump to round out the top five. Kieffer made the trip from Rapid City, SD worthwhile with a nice holeshot to start off the second moto. He held on to the lead for the first two laps, but Marcus

Koester made the pass coming around the turn at the bottom of Mount Martin. Koester kept up a good pace and pulled out a few seconds on Kieffer by the end of the race. There was a gap back to third, which belonged to Brady Peterson with Colton Steiger and Zack Keller close behind. In the Open A class, the holeshot terror, Luke Peters, rocketed off the line to lead

through turn one in the first moto. However Blake Raskovich slipped by shortly before they hit the whoops and led for the first two laps. Henry Miller was on Peters tail by lap two and made the pass coming down the hill into turn twelve. Brennan Myers also made it by Peters shortly. Miller went to work whittling down the lead of Raskovich and took over at the front shortly before the halfway point of the moto. With Miller out front, a battle broke out over second with Raskovich, Myers and Sam Wise in the mix. Myers finally won that dispute and at the flag held second about six seconds in arrears of Miller as they crossed the line. Raskovich Wise and Peters went 3-4-5. Miller snared the ProKart-sponsored holeshot money in the second moto and went on to lead all the way to the checkered with no problems. Nick Schnagl, Wise and Myers were in pursuit but no one was able to stay with Miller. Schnagl managed to shake Wise later in the race and at the end Miller took the win with about a fifteen second gap. Schnagl had a smaller but safe lead over Wise who had Myers just a couple of bike lengths back. Rounding out the top five was Peters once again. 2015 Finale out at Ki Tracks Oregon, Illinois - October 4 By Josh Rud More Photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography

K

i Tracks fired things up October fourth for a great day of racing at a great Midwest track. Fall is officially here, while the morning was a bit chilly it turned into a really great day. The track had been changed a lot since I was here, with a focus on opening up the area for a better spectator view. Things were looking great, and the races were just as good as always.

tles in 85Jr. In the first moto Brandon Martyniak took the win followed by Anthony Edgerton and John Perovic. Dropping the gates on the second moto saw a battle to the first turn with Perovic coming out in front of Martyniak and Edgerton. Into the bowl turn where a lot of passing was happening today, Martyniak dove down to the inside and came out in front. Perovic was on a mission and got back around him coming out of the woods. But then, heading over the table top Perovic went down pretty hard. While al-

Chase Sexton showed up on his new Geico Honda team ride for his first A class ride, as he’ll be off chasing the professional scene next.

This was the last race of the season here, and it was a good one for sure. One big thing going on was Chase Sexton being in town for the weekend, throwing a leg over his brand new Factory Connection Geico Honda ride. At sixteen Sexton just signed a three year professional deal with Honda that went into effect October first. Riding B class through Lorettas, this was his first A class race today and it was really awesome to be there and see it. Starting the day off was some great bat40

right, he didn’t get back on the track. This moved Edgerton to the front with Martyniak in the hunt and Landon McCombs into third. It was down to the last lap where Martyniak was riding clean and put it up front in time to take the checkered flag. The overall for the day ended with Martyniak taking first, Edgerton in second and McCombs third after a fourth place finish in the first moto. Open B was another good one today with a lot of close finishes by the end of

the two motos. In the first moto RJ Mackenzie took the win followed by Travis Ward and Nick Blumer. The second moto got underway later in the schedule with Mackenzie jumping out front with the holeshot, followed by Colton Burk and Trevor Hayes. As they made their way up the hill into the back of the track Hayes was on mission, moving up to second to start off a race long battle as Blumer was coming back from a bad start. On third lap Blumer was able to get an inside line on Burk to take over third while Mackenzie was starting to put a good gap on everyone. Coming across the line it was Mackenzie taking the win and the overall for the day. Hayes took second and ended with third overall after an unlucky seventh place in the first moto. Blumer came across in third and picked up second overall putting in two solid thirds, rounding out the podium. Open A was up next with two great motos to witness. In the first moto Chase Sexton took the win with Mark Marincic in second and Malachi Messenger third. The second moto blasted off the line with Sexton tearing out of the pack by the time they hit the first turn. Nick Inman was back riding only his second race this year, holding it in second with Marincic in third close behind him. Marincic and Inman were all over each other going back and forth through several turns until Marincic made it stick coming down the hill into the infield bowl turn. Sexton was up front opening quite a gap as Messenger was charging back and took over third. The battle went on for several laps before Marincic had a mechanical issue and had to pull off moving Messenger up to second and Billy

to win in the first moto followed by Brock Shelton and Dalton Hancher. The second moto got under way with Shelton blasting out front with the holeshot. Following him close was Nick Harris and Jake Schmit. Into the third turn Schmit found an opening to take over second only to have Harris knock right back into third as they went up the hill. As they got to the off camber, Hancher made his move for third and then quickly up to second at the bottom of the hill. Harris was putting up a fight going back and forth with Hancher several laps. When it was all done, they crossed the line with Shelton taking the win and the overall, followed by Harris (1-3) and Hancher rounding things out for third overall (3-2). It was a great end of the season for Ki Tracks. With only a couple races through-out the year it’s always a great time at the family friendly facilities. It’s great to see all the improvements going on at the track as well. Be sure to put Ki Tracks on your cal-

Pleasure Riders 2015 Finale Cayuga, Indiana - September 12/13 By Bud Northrup, photos by Martha Peters

T

he Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club unveiled their hill with a new look, stretching it to 200 feet. The riders seemed to like it, with Eric Wheelwright and Joe McGurer scoring top rides at the club’s season ending double header. Wheelwright took three class wins and set the fast time at the Saturday event. His first win came in the 250cc class where he came from behind to overtake Levi Peters, who held the first round lead with a very fast 5.897. Eric responded with a sizzling 5.875 time on his second run, which was not only good for the class win, but also the Fast Time award. Gage Stear was third in 5.923 seconds. Wheelwright took the first round lead in the 450cc class, but had to come from behind again in the second round to get under Cody Jenner, who turned in a 6.204 second time on his KTM. Eric responded with a 6.083 time for the win, with Joe McGurer third in 6.231 seconds. Jenner turned the tables in the 600cc 4 stroke class, winning it with a 6.070 second time, with Matt Peters second (6.091) and Wheelwright third. Eric’s third win came in the Senior class, where his 5.962 second first round ride held up for the win. Matt Peters was second with Andy Fortner third. Eric ran his class win total to five for the weekend, repeating wins in the 450cc and Senior classes Sunday. Joe McGurer duplicated Wheelwright’s performance at the Sunday edition, taking three wins and the Fast Time award. His first win came in the always large and fast 600cc class. Joe is the 2015 National Champion in this class, and showed folks why as he came from behind to overtake Levi Peters who took the first round lead, with Jared McKay second. But Joe really turned his Kawasaki on in the second round, flying over the top the hill in a blazing 5.777 seconds to take the class win as well as setting the fastest time of the entire weekend, and a hill record on the ‘new’ hill. Cody Jenner slipped into second with a 5.905 second time in front of Levi. McGurer is also the 2015 National Champion in the Open Stock class, and lived up to that billing by coming from behind to overtake Mike Pulver, who posted a 6.369 second first round time for the class lead. Joe carded a 6.199 second time 46

on his second ride for the win. Pulver was faster on his second ride, but fell just short. Mark Goodman was third. Joe’s third win came in the Open class, ahead of Mark Peters. Joe also ran his weekend total to five wins, having won the 600cc and Open classes Saturday night. Gage Stear was a triple class winner also Sunday, taking the 125cc, 200cc and 250cc class wins. He too enjoyed a five win weekend, as he also took the 125cc and 200cc class wins Saturday night. In youth class action, Mitch Moran was a double winner Saturday, taking the 65cc and 85Jr wins. His 6.731 second time in 85Jr was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. Lilah McGurer was the best in the 65cc class Sunday ahead of Moran. Kane Brown turned in a 6.955 time in the 85Jr to take that win ahead of Moran. That time was also good for the Sunday Youth Fast Time award. Cody Jenner capped his weekend with the win in the one run, winner take all King of the Hill class for the top ten riders of the day at the Sunday event. It was a hotly contested class, with Jenner coming out on top with a 5.847 second time. Eric Wheelwright was second in 5.903 seconds with Matt Peters close behind him with a 5.912 time – just 2/1’000’s ahead of Joe McGurer in fourth. Today was the ATV portion of the D17 State Championship!

Sunset Ridge District 17 Bonus Points Weekend Walnut, Illinois - September 27 By Josh Rud, More Photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography

T

he last weekend of September kicked off a special double-header at Sunset Ridge MX. They were offering D17 Motocross Bonus points, as well as the ATV portion of the Illinois State Championships. It was an awesome weekend out at Sunset Ridge, with fall starting to show through as the trees are starting to change, and the weather being race perfect. The track has been going through face lifts the last few years (as it always does) and it is better than ever, with a really fun layout everyone always enjoys. The racing today was a testament to that with a lot of great battles going on in all the classes, making it a fun weekend for riders and spectators alike. Early in the day on Sunday, 250B lined up for their first moto. The stacked gate took off down the hill battling into the first turn as Tyler Collins got out front for an early lead. Right behind him was Sam Tinkey and Brody Demull with everyone bumping elbows for position. Heading up the hill onto the second turn Jarred Berggren was on the move taking over third, pushing 48

towards the front. As they hit the first jump Tinkey had moved into first with Collins holding off Berggren. The top three started pulling away, but Demull was keeping pace with them as Berggren

moved into second after a couple laps of looking for the right line. On the last lap Tinkey was still holding the lead with Berggren giving it his all while Demull was able to keep the stamina up and take

over third, and they finished that same order. In the second moto Berggren came back to take the win and the overall for the day, Tinkey took second overall and Demull third, ending one of the many great races today. The quads riders were out in full force this weekend with it being their day of the Illinois State Championships. Along with the AMA providing #1 plates for the class winners, there was more than points on the

line for a good ride. 4-wheel B lined them up for their first moto of the day. Off the gate Drake Koelling out of Brimfield IL took the holeshot as they ripped into the first turn. Following him was Kory Blake and Len Plaza, making moves through the pack and steering clear of any incidences. Heading up the first jump Brandon Cesaroni moved up to third, grabbing the inside before the jump to clear it past Plaza. Koelling started to pull a good lead hitting

everything smooth as the battle between Blake and Cesaroni was now getting really good. After some hard riding they crossed the line with Koelling taking the win. Blake held on in second despite all the efforts of Cesaroni. In the second moto Koelling came away with the win securing the number 1 plate and the overall. Cesaroni got the best of Blake this time out, for second in the moto and even more important, the overall. Blake finished in third ahead of Joey Meyer and Shane Stoddard. One of the many great battles out here today came in the 125cc class. As they left the line starting off the first moto it was Tyler Evensen jumping out front with an early lead. Coming in hot behind him was Ben Ibianskas and Chase Boykin in the very competitive group. Things shook up through the next turn as Boykin made the push to take over second. Heading into the back of the track Boykin got a little out of shape dropping back behind Ibianskas and Nick Harris. Soon enough Boykin was back it taking over third while Harris wasn’t going down without a fight. Up front things starting shaking up as Ibianskas put his KTM into the lead after several atCYCLE USA, November 2105

tempts. Nolan Dickson had been cooking the entire race after a bad start and was able to push it right up into third before the finish line shaking everything up. After all the passing the final order was Ibianskas, Evensen, and Dickinson rounding out the top three. In the second moto Ibianskas came back with the win, sweeping the day and taking the overall. Evensen took second overall and Dickinson grabbed third overall with a fourth place in the second moto. 85Jr was one to watch with fourteen riders coming off the gates for the first moto. Hitting the first turn hard was John Perovic coming up the hill out front followed by Anthony Edgerton and Wyatt Mattson. Coming back down the hill was Patrick Murphy on his Rock River Yamaha blasting by everyone and sticking it right up front. This left Perovic second and Edgerton in third with Mattson on a mission looking for a way around. Around the

back of the track Mattson took over third and hitting the straight pushed it up to second with Perovic now holding down third. They were all putting in some great laps as Ryder Schnowske pushed into third and Mattson was able to get an inside line on Murphy to grab the lead. As they crossed the line Matteson took the win followed by Murphy and Schnowske. In the second moto Murphy was on a much different ride putting it out front and taking the win along with the overall. Mattson had another great ride to cross in second as Schnowske rounded things out taking third overall making for a great weekend. Things are winding down for Sunset Ridge with one race left this year, but plenty of practice time available for anyone wanting to check out the track. The racing today was as exciting as ever, it’s always a good day out at the track with the program running smoothly and everything getting taken care of with precision.

Always fast at Sunset, Iowa’s Patrick Murphy swept 85cc 9-14 and 85Jr.

50cc class riders get ready for their turn on the beautiful track

Forest City Riders Trials event Byron, Illinois - October 11 By Liz Jeffries

I

t was the last trials contest of the season, and the D17 riders had converged on Jeff Franklin’s beautiful property. This event was being hosted by the Forest City Riders club, who had lost access to the original property they planned to use, and Jeff stepped up and offered his land which had hosted the Memorial Day ride earlier in the year. The day was perfect: sunny, bright, and warm. The grounds are a maze of woods and hills, with rocks and logs scattered everywhere. The loop was an easy mix of somewhat curly single-track and atv trails. Jeff had offered up eight sections, but in a new twist, three of the sections had split the sections: novice and intermediate stayed on the low ground while the upper classes took off for tougher terrain. There was a shorter loop for the women, who rode sections 4, 6, 7, and 8. And because of the easy trail and closeness of the sections, a fairly good group of spectators showed up to enjoy the day. Jeff and his crew created an amazing event to close out the season. All the sections were full of twists and turns, and log challenges that taxed even the most advanced rider. The ground, while dry and full of traction, also had unexpected sections of sand and silt mixtures which would send an unwary rider spinning out. In a cool sensation the breeze was playing through the trees, sending fall leaves cascading down into the section as you rode. An amazing sixty plus entries came out to ride. There were twenty intermediate riders alone! There was also a large knobby class, which was cool to see as it introduces new people to the sport of trials. What was great to see as well was five riders in the Women’s class. Last season the Women’s class was either non-existent, or with one or two riders who never came back to the sport. This year, two women rode the entire season, with five others riding multiple events. This growth seems to be coming from the addition of the new Women’s class (and Beginner and Youth as well), rules that NITRO had 52

CYCLE USA, November 2105

adopted and had been suggested for the rest of the D17 clubs as well. The new rules created a special loop for the three classes, taking the four closest sections, and making them easy novice sections, and giving these classes their own loop without any of the harsh ups, downs, or tricky crossings that sometimes appear in more advanced loops. They ride three or four loops, of four sections. Not only does this allow them to test their skills in a safe environment, it gives them a chance to compete and if they still have the energy, go out and try riding a loop or some of the other sections. Rylee Woods took the first prize for the Pre-Youth with 19 points. Alex Dinger took the Youth class with sixty. Abby Fuegen won the top prize for the Women with only two points. Clark Runyard topped the Vintage class with six points. Stan Bennett finished at the top of the

knobby class with nineteen points, and Glen Falter won the Senior class with sixteen. Jeremy Dinger took the podium for the Novice class with eighteen. The Intermediate class, with an outstanding twenty-three riders, was won by Mitchell Littlefield with only two points. Josh Glueck took the Advanced class with eight. In an amazing finish, Mike Cross tied with Jim Schaidle in the Expert class at thirty-two points, winning the class with eleven cleans. And to top off a great day, Dave Rohrschneider rose to the top of a six person Champ class to take the win with thirty-three points.

Also decided this weekend was the year end D17 points. Congratulations to your winners: Champ class- Greg Sassi, Expert- Mike Cross, Advanced- Garry Gardener, Intermediate- Scott Heininger, Novice- Annmarie Cross, Women’s- Kimi Gardener, Youth- Chasen Orme, VintageKent Franklin, and Senior- Jeff Franklin. The D17 season is over, and it was an amazing one! Thank you to all of the riders, checkers, trialsmasters, and landowners that made this season amazing. See you next year! Midwest Riders Shine At AMA Hillclimb Nationals Waterford, Ohio - August 8-9 By Bud Northrup

T

he Pioneer Motorcycle Club hosted the 2015 AMA Hill Climb Nationals at their club grounds near Waterford Ohio, drawing 396 entries, 370 in the 2 wheel category. Midwest riders made an impressive showing, winning 13 of the 19 bike classes. Luke Cipala, from Elsworth, Wisconsin, claimed two class wins, two thirds and was also named the AMA Amateur Hillclimber of the Year. Joe McGurer, from Indiana, also was a double class winner with an additional second and a ninth to his credit. The hill was a ‘new look’ for many climbers, as it was set up in an ‘L’ shape. The riders came off the line over a motocross style tabletop, then had to make a 90 degree left turn into the hill itself, which was very hard and dusty. Those with significant motocross experience had a distinct advantage, and many big bikes had trouble making the turn.

Cipala’s first win came in the 200cc class with an outstanding 9.846 second first round ride. His closest challenger was Levi Peters, from Neoga, Illinois, with a 10.507 second first ride, followed by Taylor O’Neil, from Hager City, Wisconsin. Luke followed up his 200cc class win very quickly in the 250cc class, where he had to come from behind to overtake Steve Cain, from Bellevue, Nebraska, who sailed over the top in 9.602 seconds on his first ride. But Luke dialed it up on his second ride and posted a class winning 9.507 second ride. Cain couldn’t improve. Cipala also took thirds in the 125cc class behind Brock Riffe and Levi Peters, and in the 450cc class behind Steve Cain and Logan Peterson. Luke capped his day after reaching the awards podium four times, as he was called back for the prestigious AMA Amateur Hillclimber of the Year award. This has become sort of a Cipala family tradition as both his father, Todd, and brother, Logan received the title in prior years. Todd had a good day, too,

winning in +40. Joe McGurer’s first win came in the large 600cc class, where he posted an excellent 9.283 second on his first ride. That time held up in the 41 rider class with Dylan Brady, from Illinois his closest challenger. Dylan carded a very good 9.422 second time on his first run. Nathan Prebe, from Rochester, Minnesota was close behind Brady with a 9.449 first round run, but crashed hard at 282 feet on his second run in a full throttle attempt to overtake the leaders. McGurer had to come from behind for his win in the Open Stock class. His first round time had him in eighth place, with Jacob Crider of Kentucky in the lead. But in the second round, ‘Jammin’ Joe let it all out and jumped the tabletop like a motocrosser would and flew into the hill full throttle, topping it in 10.372 seconds to claim his second class win – the only rider in the class to break into the 10’s. Justin Mosely, from Kentucky, after crashing on his first ride, flew over in 11.033 seconds to grab second place. McGurer claimed his second place in the one run, winner take all, King of the Hill class for the top 20 riders of the weekend. His 9.932 second run was one of only two below 10 seconds, but Austin Coon, riding his stock length 250 like the superior motocrosser he is, blitzed the hill in an incredible 8.859 seconds to claim the ‘King’ win and the Fast Time of the Day. In Youth class action, Bodee O’Neil, from Hager City, Wisconsin claimed the 65cc class win with a 13.944 second first round ride, just good enough to hold off Bryan Curry, from West Virginia. Bodee returned in the 85Jr class with a 12.500 second time, but it was good only for second place, as Brandon Hager, from West Virginia, posted a 12.317 second first round ride that held up for the win. Lane Brookshaw, from CYCLE USA, November 2105

53

Elsworth, Wisconsin, grabbed the third podium position with a 12.872 second time. Bodee’s biggest thrill, however, probably came when he was called back to the podium and awarded the AMA Youth Hillclimber of the year award - the second year in a row for Bodee! Gage Stear, from Peoria, Illinois, was the best in the 85Sr class with a fine 11.896 second ride, the only youth rider to break the 12 second barrier, so his win was also good for the Youth Fast Time of the Day. Brock Riffe, from Kentucky was second with Andrew Fortner, from Pittsboro, Indiana, third. Gage also claimed fourth place in the 125cc class and fifth in the 200cc class. In other youth class action, Lane Brookshaw, from Elsworth, Wisconsin won the 50cc Micro class, bringing cheers of approval when he took his tiny bike over the top in 15.507 seconds. Conner Shafer, from Ohio also thrilled the crowd with a 15.714 second hill topping time. Kaden Braun, from Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, was third with a 266 foot effort. Hannah Schilling, from Ohio claimed the Mini Girls title, followed by Lilah McGurer, from Indianapolis, with a

16.770 second run and Kennedy Braun from Minnesota with a 276 foot climb. The Super Mini class win went to Sami Jerls, from Michigan in 13.856 seconds, followed by Kayden Funk, from Bay City, Wisconsin. In Women’s class action, Amber Fraedrich, from Muskegon, Michigan emerged on top with a 11.421 second time, coming from behind to overtake Morgan Wheelwright, from Elizabeth, Illinois, who posted a first round leading time of 11.782 seconds. Gabrielle Prebe, from Frontenac, Minnesota, after crashing at 262 feet of her first ride, kept it together on her second run to slip into second place with a 11.535 second run, pushing Morgan to third - but still on the podium.
