AMA District 17 Illinois State Motocross Championship Returns!
The championship event returns Sept 20th, 2015. It doesn’t seem that long ago that this District changed up the process and deleted the Championship and Mid-Season races for a more far reaching bonus point schedule. The last Motocross Championship type race like this was held in 2008. After much discussion in the meetings last fall it was decided to try it again and see if the interest is there like it used to be. This special race was awarded to our long term, good standing Galesburg Motorcycle Club. The process was basically the luck of the draw for tracks who had shown interest in this event. 2005 was the last time Galesburg M/C hosted the Championship race, and it was a great day. Temps in the 80’s, sunny and the 300+ entries all got some solid motos in with great competition. Galesburg M/C which holds top notch short track races as well at the club grounds, and has a long, solid history with the AMA. They have dedicated club members who keep the club a viable place for riders to enjoy. The club has some nice plans for this one day event. They have special awards, t-shirts, and the
Announcements, personal stuff, and.... track will be prime. A mixture of natural terrain, refaced, all rider friendly obstacles, and plenty of parking. The AMA has also provided their coveted Championship number plates for this race. The club has been working on this event all year. Planning started a few days after the initial meeting last December. Race order options, class combos/ structures, track prep planning, if it can be done ahead of time it will be is the motto of this determined group. Details: Out of state riders are welcome. If you live in D17 area, you’ll need a D17 card, but others do not. This is an AMA sanctioned event, and a one day membership is available at the track. There will be primitive camping, but the track gates do have a closing time that can be found on the website. Riders get a free Championship tshirt, and extras will be available for sale. AMA District 17 Points paying classes will run with some others if time allows, and the A classes will have a purse, to be announced. No ATV classes, as they have their own championship at Sunset Ridge MX on September 27th. This is a rain or shine event, within reason. This will be a stand alone event, one day, all the details will be on the website soon. The points for this event are double +10, which riders looking to catch up in the points chase for the end of the year may be able to really take advantage of this day. No other MX tracks will be running races here in IL on this day. Want to see who will have bragging rights for this race? Want to see if all the practicing you have done this summer has paid off? This will be that race to find out! The boys and I will be there, we re-arranged our personal schedule to make sure to attend. Hope you can come out and enjoy the day with us! See you there! Gerhard Ward, AMA District 17 Motocross Director

Philbrick Tops Aztalan Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 9 By Morgan Strauss
A
lot of times when we think of August, we think of unbearable heat, but as Sunday rolled around we couldn’t have asked for better weather for a race day. Once again, the Aztalan crew did a great job prepping the track for an exciting day of fun racing. As the gates dropped in Senior +40, Brian McCanna was on the throttle for the holeshot. By the time they reached the plateau in the first lap, James Coons managed to find his way around McCanna as Carl Hein and Martin Mecum held onto third and fourth. By the second lap, Hein took the opportunity to pass McCanna for second and not far behind Mecum and Marc Ottenad battled for fourth. Ottenad was able to clinch fourth. Somewhere in the last lap, Coons stumbled, dropping to fourth. McCanna then slipped back around Hein for first, followed by Mecum, and Coons. In the second moto, Coons managed to grab the holeshot with McCanna and Tim Boblin shortly behind. By the start jump in the lap three, Hein had worked his way up to

third with Mecum and Tom Ferguson taking the following positions. Coons and McCanna took first and second at the checkers. McCanna (1/2) took the overall with Coons (4/1) taking second, and Hein (3/3) third. Club member McCanna on the day, “After a busy practice day on Saturday we had lots of work to get done on the track since we had just over 120 riders (Sat). It was a great day and we had some nice cloud cover for most of the day, which kept the track moist and tacky. I usually skip practice because I have a five year old that needs some attention. I’ll sign up for +25A and hang out in back and check out the track and get some laps in. Well to my sur-

prise, +40 was the first big bike class in the gate. So I figured, here goes nothing! I holeshoted, made it to the drop before the plateau, and boom I found neutral. Coons and Hein went by, but by lap three I made my way around them and started to relax. I’d like to thank Rock River Powersports for some help with a new tire and gear for the weekend, also everyone at Aztalan Cycle Club for putting on a great weekend. Hope to see you next month for our big Senior/ Pro-Am weekend!” It was a great day in 65 7-11. Owen Haseleu clinched the holeshot with Justin Oehlhof right on his rear fender. By the time they reach the west side of the track, Oehlhof had slipped past Haseleu for first, with Spencer Hein, Jackson Oehlhof, Ayden Price, and Benjamin Blazek shortly behind. In the third lap Haseleu fell back to third. At the checkers, Hein ended up taking second, followed by Jackson Oehlhof, Haseleu, Price, and Blazek. At the second gate drop, Justin Oehlhof once again rushed CYCLE USA, September 2015

for the holeshot. By the time they got to the start area the next lap, Oehlhof started putting some time between him and the other riders. Hein held onto second, with Haseleu, Price, and Blazek battling for the following positions. Hein stumbled in the third lap allowing Price and Blazek to steal third and fourth. Oehlhof’s perfect 1/1 day gave him the overall, while Haseleu (4/2) was second ahead of Hein (2/5). Robert Petrillo grabbed the holeshot in +25B/C with Jake Smith and Nate White fighting for second. By the end #707 Kail McCormack getting of the first lap, Travis the holeshot in Open B. Schaefer found a chance Philbrick. Philbrick wasn’t wasting any to work his way past White for third, and time, and slipped past Baake in the back white was now pressed by White and sand section. Coons found his chance to Josh Ramsay. Once they reached the get around Baake in lap two, with Eli plateau in the third lap, Smith and SchaeWalters and Strauss battling for fourth fer managed to slip past Petrillo for first behind them. Strauss ended up in a bar to and second. In the fourth lap, White managed to work his way around Petrillo for third, leaving Ramsay to hold onto fifth. In moto two, Petrillo once again was on the throttle for the holeshot. When they reached the plateau, Schaefer was already on Petrillo’s back fender, with Smith, White and Ramsay behind. Schaefer continued to close the gap on Petrillo, and they ended up in a close battle over the start jump in the third lap. Schaefer came out on top, with Smith in third and White fourth. Ramsay fell out of fifth, leaving Jacob Noreen to steal the position. Schaefer took the win with Smith, Petrillo, and White behind. Schaefer (1/1) grabbed the overall with Smith (1/2) second, and Petrillo (4/3) third. It was an exciting day of racing in Open A when Josh Philbrick stole the holeshot and immediately put some time between himself and the other riders. Nate Knottnerus was second, Zach Coons third with Taylor Strauss in fourth. Coons started putting pressure on Knottnerus, and by the start area in lap three, Coons had found an opportunity to move past for second. When it came time for moto two, Timmy Baake was on the throttle to grab the holeshot in front of Josh Soholt in Senior +40
bar battle with Walters over the plateau in the fifth lap, and came out in fourth. Philbrick held onto first, with Coons behind. Philbrick with a perfect day took the overall, leaving Coons (2/2) in second, and Strauss (4/4) third.

Philbrick, “The track was awesome, I felt good, and my bike was working great. I won 3 of the 4 motos and got 3 holeshots. Zach Coons was keeping me honest all day though, he was riding really good. I'd like to thank Sportland 2, JM Racing, and my parents for all the help and support.” When NonCurrent took their gate drop, Justin Fluger powered out front, with Tyler Murrie behind him. By the time they reached Pete’s Plateau, Mark Bahr and Chase Janaky had found a chance to get around Zachary Scheiber for third and fourth. Scheiber wasn’t giving up, and moved around Janaky for fourth. By the third lap, Bahr stumbled, allowing Scheiber and Janaky to move up. Dustin Erickson was also on a roll and started to put some pressure on Janaky and pushed past for fourth in the last lap. It was a replay when Noncurrent hit the track for moto two. Fluger once again grabbed the holeshot, with Murrie behind. In the last lap Erickson saw an opening as he went by the start jump to slip past Janaky for fourth. Fluger with two wins took the overall, leaving Murrie (2/2) second. Once again, the Aztalan Cycle Club hosted a great day of racing. The overcast skies and humidity in the morning left the track moist and soft, making for great conditions for the rest of the day. All of the riders put in an awesome day of racing, and the volunteers kept the day moving along. We hope to see you all at the Mike Gaborsky Vet Race and Pro Am next month! Hibdon Hammers Hutchinson TT
#24 Josh Hibdon gets the holeshot
Hutchinson, Minnesota - August 8 By Tim McBride
O
ak Grove Missouri native Josh Hibdon made the trek to the McLeod County Fairgrounds worth his while as he took home the lion’s share of a $2000 purse. He won the Quad Pro-Am and Pro Challenge classes during the third annual Hutchinson TT presented by Mystik Lubricants. The District 23 event hosted by the North Central Dirt Track Association and Rath Racing also featured $3000 in prizes and contingency for amateur competitors, as well as holeshot awards. The venue attracted a whopping 178 race entrants. The tight and twisty multi -
turn/jump TT style circuit made passing tricky, so race promoter Daryl Rath added a “Joker Lane” that featured a wide sweeping left hand turn leading to the front straight that lined the outside of the customary tighter inside turn. Competitors using the unique section would obviously lose track position to anyone following closely behind, but the rule was everyone had to use the joker lane at least once during the main event. The Quad Pro/Am main event saw eighteen competitors on the starting grid. Hibdon took control of the lead quickly and scored a decisive win ahead of the normally unbeatable Rath. Third place on the podium fell to Tayler Peter-

son. Ryan Bruggeman and Colin Johnson rounded out the top five respectively. The sixteen rider Pro Challenge Quad final saw Brock Zychowski grabbing the holeshot and the $100 holeshot check. Hibdon and Rath made quick work of Zychowski when he used the Joker lane at the end of the first lap. The duo then broke away from the rest of the field. A newly determined Rath was pressuring Hibdon relentlessly throughout the race which in turn brought the Joker lane in to serious consideration. With three laps to go Hibdon used the option lane and surrendered the lead to Rath, but with one lap remaining Rath had no choice but to use the lane as well or be disqualified, in effect giving the lead and the eventual race win to Hibdon. Zychowski maintained third place to race’s end with Bruggeman and Peterson landing in the top five positions. “I saw Brock take the Joker lane after the first lap and thought ‘too early Brock!’’ explained Hibdon while being interviewed on top of the podium by celebrity announcer Dan Bailey. “I waited until I thought I had a little better lead on Daryl and took it. I thought Daryl had already taken it. The next lap I saw Daryl take it so it turned out to be a good race for me.” Hibdon, a regular on the Midwest Extreme Dirt Track Racing National ATV racing circuit is currently sitting fourth in points in the Pro division.
Mini Quad winner Brody Srsen.

Nice “Dry” Hare Scrambles

today. Running the clockwise rotation at Fox Valley gives the opportunity to run more technical trail, and with it being dry for the first time in 2015 the ability to put in the many hills was the order of the day. The west side holds moisture well and wasn’t too dusty, but the east side and the connecting fields got a little intense as the day went on. This being the AMA District 17 Bonus point race brought some new riders to the event. This made for a much better racing atmosphere as more competition and different competition is always good. Kicking off the morning program 2 separate courses were set up. The kids course behind the sign up office is set for 65 Beginner, while on the big course Super Mini, 85's, 65's and Women's classes are sent off for an hour long race.
Fifteen riders lined up in 65 Beginner, the abilities of these riders from true new to the clutch kids to riders who are real close to stepping up to the big side of things. Cole Morgan (135) rocketed off the start and looked to be the boy to beat this time. Just before the tight trees Conner Pilon (119) made his move and passed for the lead. Pilon and Morgan were the only two riders in the class to complete eleven laps. Kyle Walker and Jackson Damron had their own battle as less then stellar starts mired them deep in the pack. Picking off riders one - two at a time with a 40 minute race they had more than enough time for top five finishes, and Walker filled the last podium position. The normal inter-action between Riders Choice Kawasaki’s Garrett Ward and WFO’s Tanner Whipple in the Supermini class didn’t disappoint anyone watching today. They raced hard for the first hour of the event, with Ward then dropping back a bit. By race end Ward had pulled to less then ten seconds as Whipple went on to win, and overall the morning youth course. Morning big bikes had seventy-three riders. In +50A, while finishing fourth overall out of all of the riders, Kenny Otterbach had a great race with Shawn Van Alsburg and Kevin Finefield. Finefield took the lead for a brief time. Van Alsburg late in the race put on a charge catching up
to Otterbach, only to smack a tree and down he went. Otterbach won with Van Alsburg second ahead of Finefield and Halls Cycle rider Greg Birkland. Van Alsburg about the day, “Hot and technical for sure. This race made you think and you have better paid attention to the arrows. The hills were slick and tight, you had to have good throttle control. If you stayed on your bike and hit your marks you probably finished well.” Good racing in the C class continued today as Tanner Whipple on his KX100 was on fire. He attacked the course with finesse and determination. Jacob Maccarrens and Garrett Ward were Little B start trying not to let Whipple out of sight. Kaleb Cloyd was making sure that the local boys knew he could hang on to the pace as well, finishing third in little C, while Maccarrens man handled big C, on his new to him KTM 250. In AA, an early crash dropped Drake Lineback on his Halls Cycles Husky back, but like all know his never give up, push to the end personality made this race one to remember. Woodstock KTM's Ryan Moss had a early meeting with a square edge hole and subsequent meeting between his radiator and trail edge tree, ending his day. SRT's Austin Wells went down twice in the first lap after having a bad start, putting him back far enough to take him out of contention. Chase Robinson and Travis Ward have battled pretty hard this season. Today Ward and Robinson both had the same strategy. Get in some solid early laps while Blake Ryan held the lead. Lap five, about an hour into the race Ward found a spot where Ryan was a little slower and took advantage. Ward led for around four laps. Ryan is still lurking, and keeps telling his father Dj Ryan "next lap" for gas. Well on lap seven it wasn’t the best plan, as Ryan is sitting out on the trail looking for gas. This opened the door for Lineback to push up to Ward who was losing sight of Robinson. Last two laps side by side in the Ex section, good clean racing pushes them to the back tire of Robinson on the last lap. On lap nine Robinson pulled the fastest lap of the day at 9:33. Coming into the barrels for race end, Robinson was five seconds ahead of Ward, and Lineback. It's been a long time since
the top riders had this close of racing after almost two hours. Honorable mention is the middle Schmidt kid. Yep Benjamin won the Open A class today! Riding a bike he just bought because his normal race bike had issues. Schmidt kept a smooth pace to cover Mason Schuhler for the first time this year. In the B classes Colten Zuidema once again rode to a top five finish overall, winning 250B. 250B rider Nick Balzer (306) had this to say... “I really had a fun race ended up sixth. The dry conditions were a really nice change. The rock creek is always my favorite section. I seem to be able to get a groove through it even if it’s not particularly fast. Overall this was one of my favorite layouts I’ve ever experienced!” Matco Tools’ Lee Orme stated... “The course itself was quite technical but still fast and flowing. The technical nature of the course leaned more toward the rider who focused on being smooth. If you tried to over-ride the course it would bite you.” Twenty some Atv racers came out, and Chris Breitwieser topped the A class. Doug Yunker and Ian Pavelonis filled the podium. Then came the old guys in quad racing. Andre Topper is back again after some time off. Kevin Johnson led for a bit, but Topper passed for the lead in the +30 class with Bryan Wittersheim having some issues, finishing third.

Hot day at Lincoln Trail MX
+25A/B riders into the first turn.
Casey, Illinois - July 19 By James Pinckard
R
ound five of the Grassroots motocross series was hosted by Lincoln Trail Motosports and Pro Tracks. Hot weather welcomed the riders to a few changes to the Bomber track that set up perfectly for great racing. With the series covering four states it draws riders from all over and today riders from five states made the trip to LTM. The 250A class was a battle between long time local riders. KTM Rider David Howard has been running these tracks for years and today it paid off. In the first moto Howard had his two stroke cranking, with Blake Copeland was all over him. Copeland charged and tried everything but this wasn’t his day like many are. Howard took the moto win with Copeland second and Tyler Auten third. In the second moto Yamaha rider Ian Naccarato decided to play spoiler, taking the moto win giving him second overall. Howard kept Naccarato honest finishing second for the moto, and the overall win. Third in the second moto went to Copeland, not Blake but his brother Brayden Copeland, giving him fourth overall. Third overall went to Auten. Fifth both motos went to Giancarlo Clouser, not bad for his first A class ride. First moto fast guy Blake Copeland had issues beyond his control and suffered a DNF. In the 250B class, Logan Dagner just had the class covered, taking both moto wins and the overall. KTM rider Nathan 14

Mcclure finished second with Gage Noblitt third. In the second moto it was Ashton Hollis stepping up to finish second for the moto and overall. His moto scores tied him with Mcclure, but his better second moto handed Mcclure third overall. The 14-24 class was as easy as 1-2-3. In the first moto Yamaha rider Alex Rudd took the win with Husky rider Kody Lorenz second and Cody Schmitt third. In the second moto Lorenz took the win and overall. Second for the moto and overall went to Rudd with Schmitt third. The +25A class is fast! How fast? After taking second in the 250A and third in the Open A, Ian Naccarato had enough gas for his Yamaha to take both moto wins. Yamaha rider Josh Hicks finished second both motos. The +25 B/C class gave some riders a second chance to attack the track. In the first moto Husky rider Hank Becker took the win with Travis Walker second and Daniel Maher third. In the second moto, Becker again was out front of the pack and took the win. Suzuki rider Brian Cope took second, and when the smoke cleared for the scores it was good enough for second overall. D17 Lena Trials a Hit
Lena, Illinois - August 1/2 By Liz Jeffries
I
t was the first of August, and the sun was shining down on the opening day of the Lena double header. Day One was labeled as a Fun Day, a chance for riders to play around in the woods, and for other dirt bikers to come and see what this trials sport was all about. The work crews had been a combined effort between the NITRO riders and the Chicago Dual sport club, who had done a wonderful job on the trails for his weekend. The crews had even set up actual “practice sections”, real life sections with their own lines, that riders could play on and practice, to try a more difficult line or obstacle. Day two dawned just as sunny and warm. Sixty riders gathered to ride, meaning that the day would be team checking, groups of three assigned to each section who rotated checking duties. There were two loops through the woods, the Beginner loop for the beginner, women and youth classes, and another line for the other classes. The loop was an easy single-track through the woods, dipping in
and around the trees. There were eight sections, spread out among the property, which sported trees, ravines and a shallow creek. The hills were dry and dusty, meaning that even the simplest looking lines were a hazard of loose dirt and stones, providing another level of challenge to everyone. Lines were tight and twisty, challenging riders to be precise with every movement. Before any of the other riders took off, there was the Pre-Youth class, riders under 13 who were on 50’s or Ossets, allowing them a step from just starting riding to the Youth class. These sections were set up right in the pits, although they still challenged the kids with their balance and skills. David Cunningham took home the prize for the class. The Youth class was won by Eric Wallerich. The Women’s class, which rode the same four sections as the youth for four laps, was won by Abby Fuegen. For the other classes, who rode all eight sections for four loops, Jeff Franklin took home the win for the Senior class while his brother Kent took first for the Vintage class. Steve Hayes took the top spot for the Novice class, which had an impressive eight riders. The ten rider Intermediate class was won by Scott Heininger. Garry Gardner took the top spot in Advanced, tying with Tom Littlefield, but winning on cleans. William Check won the day for the Expert class, and the winner for the five rider Champ class was Jesse Wellenstein.

ighty-two entries signed up for the dirt tracks races at the Door County Fair in Sturgeon Bay, and Jim Kirschbaum took home the blue ribbon in both the 250cc Amateur and the Senior divisions. “Kirby finished mid-pack in the 250cc heat race, but led all but the opening lap of the final to claim the win over Colton Anderson and Adam Greenwood. Kirby and Tim May won the two Senior division heats, with May leading for the first three laps before giving way to Kirschbaum on lap four. May held on for second over Mike Yogerst and Dan Peterson. In 85cc action, Brady Lange grabbed the holeshot and led Emmett Sund, Loyal Prach, and Cole Andresen for seven laps. On the final circuit, however, the finish order changed with Sund taking the lead in the final corner while Andresen claimed third as he and Prach crossed the line sideby-side. George Patrick claimed the heat race win in the brake-less Classics class, but John Lovas led William Ferguson and Patrick after one lap in the final. Ferguson passed Lovas on lap three, with Patrick following suit a lap later. Patrick seemed unable to close the gap until he saw the white flag, and then suddenly charged alongside Ferguson going into turn one. Ferguson got a great drive out

Remembering Roger Fortner at the Pleasure Riders Hillclimb Cayuga, Indiana - June 27/ 28 By Kevin Northrup, photos by Martha Peters
T
he Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club dedicated their June 27 hill climb to the memory of Roger Fortner, who passed on at the age of 82. Roger was a big man, especially in heart and character, and will be deeply missed by the Illinois/ Indiana hillclimbers. He was a big supporter of his son Andy (‘Fast Andy’) and his grandson Andrew (Little Fast Andy) and was a major factor in the success both have achieved already. Andrew did very well at the memorial event, winning the 85cc Senior mini class and taking the Youth Fast Time award, then repeated the performance at the Sunday event, taking both the class win and setting the Youth Fast Time again. Eric Wheelwright was a triple class winner Saturday night, and a double winner Sunday. He took the wins in the 250cc and 450cc classes both days, and added the Senior (+40) class Saturday night. Mike Pulver enjoyed a double class win night Saturday, claiming the Super Senior and Open Stock classes. Mitch Morgan with a nice trophy collection from the weekend.
Jared McKay was the fastest of all Saturday night, riding his KX540 to the win in the 600cc class, as well as setting the overall Fast Time of the Day. He flew over the top of the 155 foot, 3 stage hill in a blistering 3.725 seconds on his first ride to set a time that would not be matched the rest of the night or for the rest of the weekend. Joe McGurer was his closest challenger with a 3.779 second run on his KX500 with Cody Jenner taking third with a 3.866 second time on his Kawasaki. Jenner continued his fast riding Sunday, taking the 600cc class win and also the Fast Time award with a 3.728 time on his first ride. Dylan Brady was a close second with a 3.756 time on his CR500. Wade Schultz was a double winner Sunday, taking both the Open and Senior (+40) class wins with very good runs on his big Suzuki fire breather. His 3.785 second time was good for the win in the Open class, with Mark Peters second,
then he delivered time a 3.754 second time to win the Senior class with Eric Wheelwright second and Matt Peters third. Wade flew the big Suzuki over the top in 3.858 seconds Saturday night for that Open Class win, ahead of Mark Peters and Steve Shafer. In youth class action, Mitch Moran was a double winner Saturday night, taking the 65cc and 85Jr class wins. Kane Brown was second in the 65cc class with Lilah McGure second in 85Jr. Lilah was a double winner Sunday, however, taking the 65cc and Junior Mini classes. Lake County SX Returns
The bleachers were filled, even as the Heat races kicked off.
Grayslake, Illinois - July 29 Woodstock MX Event
T
he Lake County Fair Stadium Motocross returned this year, and in many ways, it was better than ever. This event had always been known as a big show... filled with a bunch of fast riders, often times flown in from around the country. A big event, but missing the opportunity for the average rider to fit in, much less any of the youth riders. After a couple tough years of weather, combined a slow economy, the support slipped away, and the race didn’t happen in 2014. The fair board, seeing how significant this part of their fair was, hooked up with Woodstock MX’s Team (from Woodstock KTM) and together, they revived it. Now with a full amateur class schedule, and different expectations, it worked. Riders came, fans came, and it was a great night. The College Boy class got the action started. Heat race winner Neil Knottnerus took the lead out of the first turn, but quickly had his brother Nate Knottnerus on his inside. The two didn’t give each other an inch through the first two laps, as they went through most of the corners bumping elbows. As they started the third lap, Nate found an advantage on his Kawasaki and took the lead, opening a two bike gap at the same time. Meantime, Billy Holzapfel was working up from a mid-pack start. By the third lap he was into fourth, and then used the large infield
well. Once there, he never missed a line, and ran wire to wire for the win. He left the bar banging behind, as Ian Malinowski and Kyle Schneider swapped positions four time before the final lap, fighting for second place. The two had the spectators on their feet most of the moto. Schneider after the race, “It was a great battle. I didn’t get a good start, but quickly got into third. We went back and forth a bunch before I got back around him before the final jump section for second.” Malinowski finished in third, right on Schneider’s rear fender with Kyle Kunstman only a bike length back in fourth. Nate Knottnerus was back on the track in Open B, and won that class as well. Knottnerus after his second win of the night, “My heats weren’t very good, but in the mains it all came together. In the past here at Lake County I’ve done well in heat races, but never a main, so this is a great
tabletop to pass Colton Burk for third, setting the final order in the front of the pack, as Sean Hallin finished fifth. In 85Sr, KTM mounted Dj Gritzmacher made the most of his trip down from Pewaukee, WI. Grabbing the holeshot, he took control early and never looked back, riding off to the eventual win. In second, Connor Burger stayed close through all the laps, while Dalton Hein climbed up to third place from mid pack. Ayden Oppenlander had the best reaction off the line in 50Sr, grabbing the holeshot, and leading through the first lap. With the crowd cheering, and fully into seeing the youngsters on the track, the top riders were all running really close. As they began the second lap, heat race winner Benjamin Blazek slipped by Oppenlander for the lead while Peter Parenti was right there in third. With Riley Busse in fourth ahead of Shane Larson, they finished in that order, to huge cheers from the spectators coming every lap. Kenosha, WI’s Nickolas Lorenz won the 250B heat race, and was quick to jump Part of doing well at the fair, is getting interviewed in into the lead in the main as front of the crowd, as Nate Knottnerus got to experience.

change. Woodstock coming out here and putting this on for the first time, they did a great job. It has to be hard to come and build a track that is so close to perfect for one night, and they got it really right. This is technical and challenging, but with the table-tops and such, anyone can come out here and get comfortable pretty quick.” The 250C class was large enough to create a two class split. In division one, Bailey Stefka took his Kawasaki to a commanding lead and victory over Tanyon Palka and Luke Debell. Nicky Shelton did the same in the second division, leading all the way ahead of Logan Rusk and Steven Minkus. It was great seeing well over thirty 250C class riders at this event. The A classes were stacked with fast riders... all competing for their share of the $5000 Pro class purse posted by Woodstock KTM. Indiana’s Travis Sewell quickly worked into the lead on the first lap of 250A, and from there he was simply unstoppable out front on his Woodstock KTM. The spectators were all on their feet during this show as Cody Vanbuskirk, Ohio’s Daniel Herrlein, Kyle White and Scott Zont were all mixing it up for second. Freeport, IL’s White was putting his arenacross experience to good work, shaving a little time all across the track as he picked his way slowly through the other very fast riders. With less than a lap to go, he locked down second ahead of Vanbuskirk with Herrlein settling for fourth in the seventeen rider field. Sewel returned in the Open A class to lead every lap as well... sweeping the biggest payouts of the night. Herrlein finished second ahead of Vanbuskirk. White once again worked his way up, after a final pass on Zach Coons put him into fourth. The pit bike racing is always entertaining for spectators, particularly when there’s twentythree of them out there, and plenty of high-flying little bikes doing crazy stuff. When it was all done and said, many of the top regulars were up front. Mike Wendrix took the win ahead of Chad Westbrook, Ryan and Kevin Popaeko, and in fifth, Trials Expert Pat Smage. The same team from Woodstock KTM that make racing possible in Woodstock, IL were fully responsible for bringing this 20

event back to the Lake County fair. It had to be a ton of hard work and planning, but they pulled it off. Dan Jackson, a long time racer himself, and a key member of the Woodstock team couldn’t have been more happy with the night. You could see it on his face at the riders’ meeting, and then as the huge bleacher section filled to what had to be a record sized crowd. Jackson, “This is all great tonight. We have a fantastic turnout of riders and all the spectators came out to see the racing. There’s just Ayden Oppenlander led early in 50Sr. Having the a lot of excitement that youth classes back was a huge hit with the spectators. the racing is back, and year effort, as we look to be back and that it has the new format. We built the doing this for a long time, and maybe even program to include all the rider classes, inoffer a series of events here next year, as cluding our kid classes, and the fans really well as another location where we have relike that as well. There’s just less places to cently opened conversations. All conride now, so any chance we get to include necting this to our Woodstock events for a everyone, we will. The turnout proves it mini series.” was a good change. This is far from a one
Fastest of the fast tonight, Indiana’s Travis Sewell topped both of the Pro classes.
Tonight being the result of the group’s first effort here was a total success. With this event in good hands, anyone in the area should include it in their plans when schedules are released next season - as a rider, or spectator.

Half a weekend still works Shortened weekend at Aztalan still ends on a high note

T
his third weekend of August held plans for another fun double header short track at the Aztalan Cycle Club. Saturday afternoon, after most of us had arrived, got set up, watched track preparation and were waiting for practice to begin, the Wisconsin weather took a turn for the worst. A lone heavy shower lasted just long enough to cancel the evening’s event. While some folks returned home, others finished setting up
camp with their race families, and enjoyed the night, even without the racing. A bright, sunny Sunday morning brought all but three participants back that had signed up for the previous night’s event, and added about ten more riders as this was going to be a good day of racing. In practice, Quad B rider Keegan Rietz went off the track coming out of turn one,

crashing into the fence. After some ice on the elbow, he was good to go for his heat race. Hayden Rietz, Keegan’s brother, was first off the start line. By turn two, the brothers were side by side, Keegan then pulling ahead going on to win the heat! In to the main, Keegan was able to get the edge over Hayden coming off the line with Dan Mecklenberg on his Honda close behind in third. By the half way point of the race, Mecklenberg had slipped by Hayden, but was unable to catch Keegan, who captured the win, as well as his first victory over his older brother. Postponed from Saturday’s event, the third annual Ron Bean Memorial race, featuring the Super Senior class took place during Sunday’s program. A very chaotic heat race ended during the second lap after five of the eight riders crashed, collided,

Bob Walters Memorial A fantastic night of Short Track racing Galesburg, Illinois - August 15 Bob Walters Memorial
O
nce a year, for the last fourteen years, the Galesburg Motorcycle Club holds a special short track event. This is the Bob Walters Memorial. There’s usually a great turnout of both amateur riders, as well as professionals from across the country. This is a perfect stop for many of the pro riders, with the Peoria TT the next day. Tonight’s venue offered a $2000 purse in the Pro Singles and an even more impressive $5000 purse for the Expert Singles. Bob Walters was one of the founding members of the Galesburg Motorcycle Club, Inc. It is from his dedication and aspirations that allow the membership to follow a common goal of “promoting the sport and recreation of motorcycling”. The organization was founded in 1923, and this event is in his memory. In addition to all the riders and their families, there’s huge support from spectators. Tonight’s weather was just perfect... warm, dry, and we heard conversation that the club saw close to 1500 people come through the gate. The spectator hill was covered, and the fans were fired up all night. The four to eight year old riders kickedoff the main events in the 51 Stock Shaft class. Washington, Illinois’ Trevor Tid-

well had shown his speed earlier in the heat racing, and continued right from the green light start. He led out of turn one, and slowly inched away for a clean sweep. Mason Brock made a couple early race passes to take over second, and then led Caden Bender and Konnor Copelen across the finish line. In the 51 Chain 4-8 class, Mason Brock led the group of Cobra riders through every lap. The top four stayed close, but the order was set right away in the first lap. Trenton Crow ran in second, as Trevor Tidwell and Cayden Cox were never more than a bike length or two back.

Declan Bender took the early lead in the 65cc 7-11 class, while Chase Saathoff rode right on his back wheel. As they exited turn four, Saathoff went under Bender for the lead. From there they ran fender to fender for the rest of the race, with Saathoff never surrendering the lead position. Tyler Tidwell, Clayson Price and Landon Drowns kept in close, back just a bit from the leaders as they rode to fill the top five spots each lap. The 85cc class was a little short of the number of riders, but the racing was the closest to this point of the evening. Kash Schnowske led off the line and was riding really well. Heat race winner Chase Saathoff was second, and able to take over the lead as Schnowske missed a line in the third lap. This also opened the door for Gunner Schmidgall to get by, taking over second. A lap later, and Schmidgall made his move, passing Saathoff for the lead. The three stuck super close to cross the line in that order, all three riders having been in the lead at one point. With the youth classes wrapping up, the bigger bikes fired up, and it was time for the final in the Pro Single class (GNC-2). Twelve riders had qualified through the heat racing, and lined up for the $2000 purse, $500 of that going to the winner.
Riders from seven states were on the line including IL’s Steven Sandoval, Blake Claeys, and Adam Camp, plus WI’s Morgen Mischler and IA’s Kole King. hit the track. Kolton Featherston had the best reactions off the gate, and needed it as Dallas Daniels pushed him hard right away. With Drew Hart and Jake Fell right there in third and fourth, Featherston rode a perfect race to win, never letting the pressure from Daniels create a mistake. Lance Kent and Richard Kent were out front early in the +30 class, before the crafty elder Rich King turned up the pace, and worked from mid-pack to an eventual win. Waterloo, Iowa’s Rich King wasn’t done there, as he went on to win the +40 class next. King, “I won the +30 and +40 classes, and the +50 class is coming up yet. Believe it or not, sometimes that is the toughest of them all. This is a neat race track, and a lot of people come to it. I used to race professionally, and brought my son here to race numerous times over the years. Now, while he is busy working and the bikes were sitting there, I decided

to dig em out, and go racing. This is one of the places I always liked so here I am, and I’m having a great time.” King kept his record perfect for the evening, winning +50 ahead of Rob Gessner and Jack Klein. After several attempts to get the 450cc class off and running, Jayson Beal was the sole rider on the front row for the final re-start. He took full advantage of that and led every lap to take the win. Coming from fifth, Kolton Featherston slid past Tyler Mink, and then Jeremiah Duffy for second in the last lap. Beal repeated his winning ride in the 250-Open class as well. Featherston again finished second, this time ahead of Jake Fell. Was this a perfect night... pretty close! The club ran a great program on an excellently prepped track. The riders put on a fantastic show and from what I could tell, the crowd was as impressed with it all as I was. Yup, it was perfect “enough”. Chase Saathoff cutting under Maclain Drucker, on his way to winning the 65cc 7-11 class.

Nearly 500 at Millville
James Clough (15) is off to a great start in the 65cc 7-9 class.
Millville, Minnesota - August 16 By Rolfe Otterness
T
ucker Hibbert emerged from his summer hibernation and charged hard to take the overall in Open A and the +25A classes at the latest Spring Creek motocross event. In a bit of a tuneup for the Indiana Pro National, Hibbert showed he had good speed by holding off some hard charging young guns - Henry Miller, Sam Wise and Nick Schnagl in the Open class motos. Miller had a couple of wins himself as he snared the 14-24 and 250A classes while Wise and Schnagl

showed they are worthy in the A class with good finishes. A few other notable performances were James Clough, Gage Steberg and Josh Boaz taking double wins in the various mini classes, plus Keegan Kleinwotterink (say that name fast five times!) mastering 250C and 14-24C. Even the old guys were getting in the act as Scott Steinle and Michael Zimmerman piled up double OA-wins in some of the classes for the youthfully-challenged. The Spring Creek track was in prime shape for the event as the ground was dry down deep compared to previous races in this wetter-thannormal summer. Turnout was good with the entries close to 500. The temperature cooled considerably from Saturday’s practice session where it was cookin’. Gage Steberg came flying off the line to lead early as the 85cc 9-12 class was released. Steberg started to gap Jayden Clough by a bit as they rounded the turn at the bottom of Mount Martin, but he slid the rear end of the bike around and lowsided as he started uphill. Clough took over out front
with Donovan Hanson and Gavin Janovsky blitzing by Steberg as he tried to recover. By the end of the next lap though, Steberg had displaced Janovsky for third and was behind Hanson, in a dogfight. Clough went on to take the win with Steberg eventually pulling clear of the rest of the pack for second. Hanson, Avery Long and Janovsky wound up 3-4-5 at the finish line jump. Moto two featured Steberg on a mission as he led every bit of the way from the holeshot to the checkered. He had a solid lead over Clough, who in turn had a gap over third-place Janovsky. Long was only a second or two back for fourth with Hanson grabbing fifth. Mateo Johnson and Devin Stang surged ahead of the pack in the Schoolboy class as moto one proceeded to unwind. Johnson had pressure all the way,

Riess pulled a bit of a lead over Knupp and maintained it for a nice win. Murphy displaced Vanderwerf after a lap or so and edged away a bit for third at the flag, aided by some good jumping technique on her 85. return of Henry Miller from Loretta Lynn’s and the advancement of Sam Wise and Nick Schnagl to the A class, along with sixteen more good riders on the line. Schnagl jumped out to lead early on with Hibbert pulling into second over Wise. Miller had a trouble-plagued early lap and was buried in the pack. Hibbert and Wise both got by Schnagl on lap two. Blake Raskovich and Dylan Narel were also running top five early on while Miller started picking off riders at a steady rate. Hibbert began to creep away from Wise and Schnagl, gaining a second or so per lap. Schnagl dropped back a bit late in the race and just managed to hold off Miller on the last lap. Raskovich filled out the top five. Hibbert snared a holeshot in moto two with Miller latching on to second. Hibbert would pull a few bikes lengths
here and there to have Miller reel him back in again to maintain pressure throughout the moto. At the flag Hibbert held on for the win with Miller close behind. Another Great weekend at Arkansaw MX

Arkansaw, Wisconsin - July 25/26 By Cody Wills
S
ummer was finally upon us and there’s no other race to look forward to more than the D16 Arkansaw MX double header in Arkansaw, WI. Summer in Wisconsin is an excellent time camp out, but combine it with great people, awesome trackside activities along with some fantastic racing and you have all the right ingredients for a perfect weekend. It was time to get the party started. The activities the crew here at Arkansaw MX put together are what really create the weekend. Saturday night they had an amazing band that suited the crowd and everyone enjoyed it. For the kids they ran a homemade slip and slide down one of the down hills and they all had a ball. The parent/ child race was a huge success, and it was a close one between Jason and Sierra Heindl and Dave and Kyle Hameister. The annual pig roast was of course a huge hit, and the door prizes and pit bike giveaway provided by Xtreme Motorsports of Chippewa Falls 34

winning the rest of the 250A and Open A overalls through the weekend. The Women’s class had some excellent battles as Kendra Randrup and Leea Niesen showed their speed throughout the weekends motos. Randrup just edged out Niesen in moto one on Saturday, but Niesen got the best of her in moto two, claiming the overall. Sunday the battle was on again and it looked like Niesen would claim the first moto but she tipped over in the last corner before the finish and Randrup and Sierra Heindl dropped her back to third. Niesen unfortunately was actually be handed a dnf for getting outside assistance getting her bike started. She bounced back to win moto two, but the consistency of Randrup got her the day’s overall. Heindl claimed second. Sometimes to find the most exciting racing you have to look for the Vet classes. +30B/C had just that on Saturday with fourteen riders showing up at the gate. Aaron Bechel showed some speed throughout the weekend and Adaptive rider Dylan Apnli giving it is all and having a blast. put in a good battle with Justin
added even more. The lucky winner was Brady Strum! How else could you start a weekend any better? The A classes had some fast guys that put on a great show. Collin Reinhart started out the weekend looking like the man to beat, winning 250A on Saturday, but Kyle Hameister quickly showed the speed and consistently he has all year by
Fluger in the first moto, as Bechel got the win. Also in the mix was Jeremy Braund who picked up a third. Moto two saw things flip around as Fluger got out front and made sure to secure the lead and the overall. Bechel was only be able to muster a third and stepping up his game this moto was Bill Ahlers, who picked up second. Ahlers’ 5-2 score put him in third overall. Bechel’s 1-3 earned second overall. Tom Ferguson went 4-4 for fourth overall. +25B/C also had a good turnout. It seems more and more riders are turning out for the age classes, and all those guys love this track. Josh Ramsay has been a District 16 regular for years. Josh came out dominated the class both days, winning all the motos. Andy Draeger also had a solid weekend on his Donahue Super Sport YZ250F, picking up second Sunday and third on Saturday. The parent/child race was really exciting. Sierra Heindl of the Women’s class and her dad Jason Heindl pulled out to a lead as Kyle Hameister and his dad Dave worked their way into contention with a lap to go. As Jason made some ground against Dave, Kyle would make up the difference and did just that on the last lap as he passed Sierra for the win. A great weekend had to come to a close, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The weather couldn’t have worked out better for racing and all the activities the crew provided. This event is a can’t miss every year. The track formed its normal
awesome ruts, and the crew took awesome care to make this one of the best weekends this year. R
ound seven of the Fly Racing Showdown series was full of fun and things to do and see. With Monday being the Fly ride day there were riders from all over the Midwest to tackle the Bomber track. The Fly rig was there showing all the cool products. Thompsons Motorsports had the Jason Raines’ Yamaha Demo Program where you get to ride any of the new bikes you want, ranging from the TTR50 to the YZF450. What a great deal and there was a line all day for the retro yellow bikes. Six time AMA National Hare Scrambles champion and a former factory Yamaha rider Raines, when asked about the program said, “This is the fifth year for the program. It is open to all age riders and we encourage first time riders. Right now our number one group is the 5 to 15 year olds which is good news for our sport. Our
number one bike asked to ride is the YZF250 followed by the twostrokes. We even provide gear if you need it.” Lincoln Trail also added loads of sand to the track sending loads of talk through the pits Saturday. Yes, it was deep, but by the second motos it was perfect!! Good job LTM for providing a fun track and keeping it in great shape. With well over 400 entries on hand it was a surprise to me that the biggest ride of the day came from a Little Dude. Cobra/ Seven rider Krystian Janik was simply impressive, setting lap times that matched many of the big bike riders. The first class Janik faced was 65 Open. Janik got a good jump off the start and took off taking the moto win. KTM rider Mark Fineis finished second with Ian Murphy third. In the second moto it was the same as Janik laid down what looked like perfect laps taking the moto win and overall.

Valley Raceway, Just Right Crystal Falls, Michigan - August 9 By Cody Wills
T
hat time a year in northern Michigan… and particularly in Crystal Falls, Michigan when they celebrate Fungus Fest. At Valley Raceway they like to bring a little bit of that town tradition to the track and crown what they call King Shiitake… the king of the A classes! Along with that is some great racing in all the classes on what was sure to be a beautiful weekend at Valley Raceway. This year saw a dominating performance in Open A by northern A class regular Adam Reek. Reek went 1-1 to claim the “King Shiitake” crown. David Watzka claimed second in Open A but not without fight from Justis Heckendorf who would end up third overall (3-3). Watzka turned the tables, and came out on top of 250A, ahead of Reek. Kyle Ahola went 2-3 for third overall. 50Sr had some amazing racing going on as the little guys had took to the big track this year. Deegan Vanvreede, Lance Torp, Ethan Ebben, and Jace Miller battled for the win at some point in moto two, where
they all seemed to hand the lead away at one time or another. Vanvreede looked to have the speed of the class working his way to the front and at the end, staying there for the win in both motos. 250C had some close and always exciting action as John Bougneit of Green Bay and Christian Maki had a great battle in moto one for the win. Bougneit managed the rough sand track just a little bit better for the win. Michael Kingstad, who showed speed on his KTM all weekend had some trouble early in the moto, but made his way up to third. Moto two saw Kingstad jump out to the lead after about a lap, and put his speed to work. Bougneit showed his consistent riding style locking down second and that was enough for the overall. Get-

ting in the mix this moto was Broc Watzka who finished third, after a fourth in moto one, landing him in third overall. First moto runner-up Maki went down, and dropped back to sixth in this moto. The younger Preston Maki rode well in the 85Sr class, working hard to get a second in moto one behind Tyler Kalies. Pre-
Preston Maki topped the 85cc 12-15 class.
Justis Heckendorf went 3-3 for third overall in Open A.
ston also had pressure form Collin Schmechel but was able to hold him off. First moto winner Kalies didn’t have such good luck in moto two, but Andrew Combs turned his luck around from his first moto fifth, taking off in the lead and eventual moto win. Maki stayed consistent in second and finish there as Kalies came back to finish fourth. Maki landed the overall with 2-2 scores ahead of Kalies (14) and Combs (5-1). The weekend started with a little rain on Saturday for the first day of racing, but when you come to a sand track you welcome that type of rain with open arms. It made for an excellent track. I’m already looking forward to the events next year. Both times I’ve attended the track this year I have never seen it in better shape, and the crew always does everything they can to change things up and make everything exciting.

Motosports Park Winding Down Byron, Illinois - August 2 By Josh Rud, www.shiftonephotography.com
R
ound 7 of the Nuclear Series got its start on the second of the August with the season winding down faster than one could blink. The year has really been flying, especially with all the weather slowing things down in June. Today was another great day out at Motosports Park with the weather and the track holding up great all day. There was a good turn out today and some awesome racing. One of the many great races today was in 250B. In the first moto Derrek Rodgers out of Nebraska took the win with Dylan Boyd in second and Tyler Collins third. The second moto started off strong with RJ Hampshire taking the holeshot, after not even being able to start the first moto. Right on his back tire was the 99 of Jarred Berggren who also had some bad luck in
the first moto, and Rodgers as they moved in the second turn. Berggren snuck to the inside of Hampshire with Rodgers following him to take over first and second. Heading into the sweeper Rodgers wasted no time flying hard to the outside to take over the lead as Boyd was back in the hunt, moving into third over the table top. The top six were close for several laps before coming down the hill towards the finish area, where Berggren tipped over, pushing Hampshire up to third. It came down to the last lap, as Tyler Collins was pushing hard all moto and finally got around Hampshire to secure third. When the checkers flew it came out with the same order as the first moto giving Rodgers the overall, Boyd in second and Collins in third. Supermini was out there putting in some hard battles as well today. In the first moto Eddie Norred took the win followed

by Conner Burger and Zennon Shain. The second moto got underway with Norred out front and Burger literally right next to him as the two battled for the lead all moto, putting out a great race. Coming around on the second lap into the tabletop Mitchell Malaney who took fourth in the first moto got a good run at the jump and held the inside coming into the next corner to take over third. Norred and Burger continued putting in solid laps and started to pull away from the field. They came across the line with Norred sticking the win and taking the overall, Malaney held onto third giving him third overall for the day closing the books on another great race. 250C was a packed house with thirty riders lining up to rush the first turn. In the first moto Bailey Stefka took the win followed by Cole Prichard and Jeremy Witek. The gate dropped on the second moto with a roar of bikes charging the first corner. Stefka had a great jump and got out front on his Kawasaki. Prichard had grabbed second and Bobby Zielinski was holding third. For several laps the field was battling for positions with Stefka doing all he could to hold off Prichard as they continued their battle from the first moto. On the third lap Tyler Evensen was putting on a charge after getting a bad start. He made it up to fourth and was looking for a way around Zielinski and managed to snip off third coming around the sweeper. Zielinski lost the back end momentarily, but it was enough for Evensen to get by and push hard towards the front. Stefka took the win and overall for the day, leaving second for Prichard and Evensen picking up third overall with a fifth place finish in the first moto. +30B/C was a crazy race today with a ton of action going on. In the first moto Jeremy Witek took the win with Paul Molkentin in second and Cory Lingle third. The second moto came off the line to chaos as Randy Julseth got the holeshot ahead of Molkentin and Witek. Heading into the sweeper Witek was on the charge taking over second and then moving into the lead over the table top. This left Molkentin in second and Julseth third. In the second lap Witek had some back luck and slid out on the sweeper pushing Molkentin into the lead followed by Julseth and Lingle. Julseth was on a mis-
sion and on the last lap was able to get by Molkentin for the lead. Julseth took the win with Molkentin and Lingle literally side by side over the finish line. The overall ended with Molkentin taking the win, with Julseth second after a fourth place finish in the first moto and Lingle third for the day. It was another great day of racing at Motosports Park as things are coming to a close. The last rounds of the Nuclear series will be a double header in September running Saturday and Sunday with awards after the race Sunday. More will be in store for Motosports Park Zennon Shain finished with a lot of events still on the second in 85Sr and table once the Nuke series fourth in Supermini. comes to a close, the Vet Race, +45: 1.David Hayes 2.James Coons 3.Frank Licastro and the always exciting Halloween race +55: 1.Ken Petrillo 2.Dan Dworzynski 3.Steve Abt just to name a few. Megacross, with an EX Twist Mendota, Illinois - August 8 By Josh Rud, www.shiftonephotography.com
Kyle Bounds takes on part of the EX section, quickly becoming very popular with many riders.
A
ugust has come and gone, with Megacross kicking the month off and bringing out the “endurocross” motos for some extra fun for the fans and riders. It’s a great setup putting in some trees, tires and logs at the side of the track to create obstacles for the riders who ride half the stadium track and then the EX track. Tom Hofmaster in particular has been getting the itch to jump some tires and was actually practicing a bit at his house. It was a great night of racing under the lights with the EX drawing in extra fans to watch as the riders traversed the logs and trees, and had to make up some time in whichever section of the track they were best at. Things are winding down around the area with only a few months of racing left so everyone is looking to lock things in for the year. There was a lot of great racing out there tonight. Starting out the night was +25A, putting on a good show for everyone. The gates dropped to Jonathan Six jumping into the lead followed by Marshal Cudney and Burton Lavens as they charged into the whoops. Lavens passed Cudney for second and was right on Six as they moved into the back of the track. Joe Smutney was on the gas taking over third as they hit the second set of whoops. Smutney then went to showing Lavens a

tire through several corners. As the laps wore down he finally got around him, coming in hot down the straight to take over second. Crossing the finish it was Six taking the win. Tonight’s Ex turnout was a little light considering it was a rain date make up event. One in which would have been ok but having not one but two Hare Scramble races on this Saturday divided up the riders who turned out in force the previous event. This didn't deter the racing intensity, or the fans who came out once again
to watch. Many riders made the long trips back from the day’s HS races to line up in time to get some Ex laps, like Tanner Whipple coming four hours from Plainview and Brian Roland and his family coming back from Roselawn. Tonight the program was streamlined and finished on time. Ex C was the biggest class and the Heat race saw Spencer Neurohr grab a killer holeshot only to hit traction 150' off the starting line and loop out in grand style. In the main, off the line Justin Carr pulled the holeshot with Neurohr and Tanner Whipple in the hunt. Riders Choice Racing’s Garrett Ward was mired back in the pack with a bad start and had to start looking to find ways to get his KX100 past riders quick. Carr held the lead for a lap, and as happens in many Ex type races miscues on a log and got passed by Whipple, Neurohr, and Ward. Neurohr took the big log line and Ward who was now in second chooses the multiple smaller log line and makes the pass. Ward held on for the win with Whipple and Neurohr rounding out the top three. One of the other very competitive races was Ex A class... with only a few riders but MXstuff4U's Tommy Hofmaster must have liked his Sx-Ex Dash for cash win in July, as he signed up for tonight’s Ex A class. This put Travis Ward and Andrue Remley on the block to give the ole Arenacross pro some competition. Hofmaster holeshots his YZ250 smoker and CYCLE USA, September 2015

pulled Ward’s Honda 500 by a couple feet. Remley was there also. With all the B class riders mixed in with them it was going to be good battle. Hofmaster hung up his suspension linkage on the big log. Four feet off the ground and the bike teetering like its on stilts. Ward, Remley along with most the B class passed by him. Ward now is cruising and arguably has the most experience of all the riders dealing with logs, tires, and the rest. Hofmaster remounted and was flat hauling. Middle of lap three Hofmaster on the Sx part of the track cut an inside line on Ward and retook the lead. Watching Hofmaster double up logs, launch off the tires, there had to be something up! While being interviewed it was found out that he had in the last week installed some logs on his Sx track at home, and had been practicing the new type of racing offered with the Ex classes. In that interview he said "man that is tiring, but it's a lot of fun!" Notable mention in the Ex 40 class Steve Perkins found the ground, after leading for 2.5 laps, letting Ex 30 class winner Luke Kaszynski taking the multi-class win. Jay Porter also had a first, it was the first time his good friend AJ Jensen has ever beat him in a race. Both were Ex virgins and had a blast! Nothing like good rivalry to make a night of racing fun! The Ex racing was finished up in the middle of the evening’s program and the racing on the track was back underway with 250C coming out for battle. The gates were packed up to the brim with twenty-two riders signing up. The gates dropped to Even Valicenti getting a great start off the line with Charles McCook and Huntr Grampp right on him as they went around the first turn. Flying into the whoops section Colton Saylor mounted a charge, taking third from Grampp. Heading over the table tops McCook was on hot as he took over the lead with Saylor following right behind, bumping Valicenti back to third. From here things started to heat up with an intense battle for third ensuing. There were four riders bunched up behind Valicenti, putting pressure on as they came into the whoops. Coming to the finish line it was McCook taking the win with Saylor a solid second, and Matthew Ott holding his line through the sand and pinning it over the line for a third place for the night. Things heated up even more with 250A taking to the track. Kyle White is back in town after doing a majority of the outdoor nationals. Coming off the line Tommy Hofmaster took the lead with Mark Mar44

incic and White filing in right behind him. The racing was very intense with everyone going right to the edge of their limits, looking for lines to pass. White’s opportunity came over the table tops as he went for it hard coming into the straight to take over second. White was on a mission chasing down Hofmaster and staying right behind him the entire race. The battle started to mount for third as Wisconsin rider Andy Kost made his way to the track for the second time this season. Kost was blasting out there, making up from a fifth place start and right on Marincic. They went back and forth several times throughout the race. It was in the second set of whoops Kost finally got around and made it stick after a hard fight. At this point Hofmaster and White had checked out, coming the close several times. They crossed the line after an exciting race with
Hofmaster winning. It was a great night out at Megacross with the track holding up really well through the evening. With the season being so close to over you can expect some great races as everyone gets in some

he Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders ran their rescheduled May hill climb at their club grounds near White City, Illinois, with Cody Jenner claiming two class wins and the Fast Time of the Day award. Dylan Brady posted the first sub 3 second time on his KTM380 with a 2.930 run in the second round of the 450cc class. That ride vaulted Brady into the class win after finding himself in sixth place at the break. It also moved him up on the Fast Time bubble, slipping under Jenner who posted a 3.00 time in the 600cc Four Stroke class on his KTM450 to take that class lead into intermission. Matt Peters, on his KTM450 was second behind Brady in 3.066 seconds with Michael Kirkness third. Jenner’s first run held up for the win in the Four Stroke class, with Peters second again with a 3.022 time. Kirk Gorsuch was third. Jenner had another ride coming in the 600cc class, where he was leading at the break with a 3.128 second time on his KX500. In the second round Brady chal46

lenged him for that win with a 3.104 second run, but Jenner responded with a class winning 2.911 second time to not only claim the class win, but set a new overall fast time. Jenner’s closest challenge for the coveted Fast Time award came from the Super Senior (+50) class where veteran rider Mike Pulver flew his Honda over in 2.916 seconds to stage a come from behind win, overtaking Mark Peters and Mark Dunbar for the class win, and coming within five thousandths of a second of the fast time. Once again, proof that old isn’t always slow! The only other double class winner was Levi Peters, who claimed wins in the 200cc and 250cc classes. National #3 plate on his KX250F, Levi topped the hill in 3.136 seconds for the 200cc win, ahead of Ken Matway on his YZ250F. Riding his CR250, Levi set the best first round time in the 250cc class, then lowered that to 3.053 seconds on his second ride for the win. Jon Creek was second on his Suzuki with a 3.182 second time with Jake Bell close behind him in 3.202 seconds on his KX250. In youth class action, Jaydn Aliprandini took the 65cc class win with Ian Brown second. Brodie Bennett was the best of the 85Jr class with Aliprandini second and Brown third. n August 15th and 16th Wisconsin Observed Trials Association held their Dickeyville event at the Vinnie Loeffelholz farm. The pits area is provided by the neighboring Neise farm. This area included a pavilion with picnic tables and a rest room with a flush toilet and running water. Sure beats the usual set-up. Half of the sections utilized a slate bottom creek that includes some waterfalls. The other half was in the woods and utilized hills, trees and a few rocks. There were some new sections built in this area that included more rocks and provided new challenges. One section even had four springs that added some wet slippery spots to the otherwise dry terrain. The creek sections can be seen from the road and attracts many spectators. A group of Harley bikers showed up to watch and joked about taking their “hogs” up the waterfalls. They decided the trials bikes were better suited for the task. The Women’s class grew from last year with Loreydi Lopez Ramirez entering her first WOTA event. The Youth class included Pat Doll riding exhibition. Pat is a past Champ class winner. When he signed up he said he would just ride exhibition for the weekend.

the first moto Dalton Hancher took the win followed up by Andrew Mueller and Sean Prenner. They took off the line later in the day for the second moto with Hancher getting the early jump as they bunched up in the first turn. They came down the short straight with Mueller moving out front, and Nick Britt in third. Hitting the first bowl turn Prenner took over third shortly to have Britt come wide and move back into position. As they came to the first jump Hancher took the corner wide to get the extra speed and take over the lead from Mueller. Hancher began putting some distance behind him as Mueller and Britt were holding second and third with Prenner right in the mix, making great attempts to move up. As they crossed the finish line Hancher took the win and overall for the day, Mueller second while Britt took third, and fourth overall. Supermini was another great race today with the little rippers out there putting down some great battles. In the first moto Garrett Ward took the win with Robert Lopez in second and Zennon Shain third. The second moto things started out a little differently since their first moto was very
much in the mud. Coming off the gate Lopez jumped out in front with Ward and Lane Christians right in the chase. Conner Burger came around looking for redemption after succumbing to the mud in the first moto, sliding into third, looking very much on a mission. Not long after, Ward flew by Lopez with Burger right behind him, leaving Lopez in third. The three up front had plenty of company all moto with Shain right on Lopez, trying to grab third the entire time. The checkers fell to Ward taking the win and the overall. Lopez (2-3) took second overall ahead of Shain’ 3-4, ending yet another great race out there today. Open A is always a great class to check out, and today was no different. Malachi Messenger didn’t finish the first moto, leaving the top three spots to be filled by Adam Tarara, Byron Downen and Sean Hallin. The second moto lined up with everyone ready to go and the track in much better shape. The gate dropped to Messenger putting his Husqvarna out front, chased by Tarara and Billy Holzapfel. Coming around the first turn Hallin stuck a wheel in to take over third, but it was quickly taken back by Holzapfel around the bowl turn. As they came down the back straight Messenger was clearly out for redemption, building a pretty good gap on the field while Tarara held onto second. Holzapfel and Hallin were still battling it out when Scott Kaltenbach started a late charged and joined the battle for third taking over forth and now putting the pressure on Holzapfel. Messenger took the win with Tarara in second and Holzapfel fought everyone off for third. The overall went to Tarara going one-two. 250B was out to close things down for
i Tracks continued the season with their second race of the year this past August ninth. The weather hasn’t been on the track’s side this year, with the last race ending due to lightning after first motos. Today started out with a little rain, but as time went on it cleared up and had some great lines and great racing followed. I always enjoy making the trip out to Ki Tracks; the area is very beautiful with a nature terrain track carved into the woods - it’s a very cool spot to check out. The layout has changed a little bit since I had been here last with some good additions. After the finish line table there’s an interesting switchback section through the woods, and the back straight has been turned into a nice downhill jump with a sweeper into the straight. Of course the visit to the track isn’t complete without clocking your speed at the end of the straight with the radar trap setup. Things got underway with some great racing #93 Roy Nafzger gets the jump in the +50 class. Next to him is Michael Westbrook. from the 250C riders. the day and definitely put on a great show. In the first moto Steve Simmons took the win with Lucas Hayes and Michael Prince rounding out the top three. The second got underway with Hayes pulling the holeshot with Simmons and Prince on his back tire. Heading into the top of the track, Prince took over second with Hayes holding his ground out front. On the third lap things were getting a bit spread out as Prince went down, ending his race for the day. This bumped Steve Simmons up to second and Matt Simmons moved into third. They came across the line with Hayes taking the win and overall for the day. It was another great day out a Ki Tracks. Despite the weather in the morning, things cleared up and made for some amazing conditions. The natural terrain and wide turns with lines for days is something a lot of people are always looking for. Going four wide around the finish line sweeper isn’t uncommon at all, the track always develops into many

Finally, Tri-City gets one in!

really popular with riders from all backgrounds... trial riders, moto, and woods racers all dig the two long motos on a fter getting off to a terrible start mixed terrain course. this season, thanks to mother naSunday delivered motocross, and a dry, ture and plenty of rain, the long actually very dry and hot day. Can’t comrunning Tri-City Motorcycle club in Coal plain about the heat and it being dry Valley, IL finally got in a full weekend of though... it was a day we could actually racing. It started on Saturday with a GP spend at the track racing, versus sitting at race. The GP racing is quickly becoming home wishing we were there. The Quad riders kicked off the racing, and Drake Koelling set off to win the B class right from the gate drop. Pulling the holeshot and then clean laps, he held Kelton Zeman behind all the way to the checkers as Mark Dekker finished third. In the second moto, Koelling had a little more room as he led Zeman. Mark Dassow finished fourth in the first moto, but this time he was on a mission to beat Dekker, and got by him mid-moto for third, and third over85Sr class winner #24 Cameron Campbell with 85Jr winner #55 Seth Warfield early in their combined moto. all.

After taking the win, Koelling, “I came out here in practice and ran some good fast laps. After pulling the holeshot in the first moto, I had the lead all the way. Same in the second moto. The track is pretty good... just rough enough to help separate the riders and keep you thinking. I just got done with the national series where I got a seventh and a ninth in the B class, so hopefully next year I can go for the Championship.” In the Quad C class, Eric Johnson and Cory Ford were fighting hard out front right from the start. Johnson would pull a little, and then Ford had his faster sections as well. With just over a lap left to go, Ford dove to the inside and looked to have a pass made, but then stalled his quad, losing enough time that Johnson rode off to an easy win. Craig Fyfe finished third, a ways ahead of Nick Miller and Alex Veith. In the second moto, Johnson pulled a small lead early, and had a little easier run to the win. Ford held second all the way, as Fyfe put in the extra effort to get around Miller late in the moto for another third. Fastest laps of the day were put in by East Moline’s Taylor Mclaughlin in the 250A class. Jake Gray kept him honest, but Mclaughlin was in control through both motos. The Open C class saw a perfect two moto sweep delivered by Kawasaki mounted Joey Fechter. Out front, Fechter was never really challenged after the first
half lap. Second place finisher Nicholas Vaughn held off some late moto pressure from YZ125 rider Kyle Caudill. In the second moto, Fechter had everything under control while Vaughn again found himself under the gun from Caudill. Half way through the third lap, Caudill saw an opening and made the pass. He pulled a couple bikes lengths, and then rode off to second in the moto, and overall. In 250C, Thomas Schwieter led start to finish in moto one. Joey Fechter was second, but eventually Andrew Mueller made the pass over a mid-track double that Fechter wasn’t attempting. Tyler Faull was back a ways in fourth, ahead of Austin Cobb in the ten rider class. Schwieter pulled a repeat in moto two, going untouched after slipping away from Mueller. This time, Fechter wicked it up a bit, and finished second ahead of Mueller. Cody Anderson finished fourth, bettering his first moto tenth with a good ride on his Honda. Caudill was in this class as well, and quietly went 6-5 for fourth overall behind Mueller.
Schwieter after the win, “It was a little slick, but you just had to ride smooth and smart. I pulled the holeshot and was having a good battle with my buddy Andrew Mueller for a while before he fell back behind another rider. I’d like to thank my family and friends, and dad for helping me so much.” Roland Gomez celebrated his forty-seventh birthday at the track in a big way.
