CYCLE USA, September 2016
This will be very short this month. I just got back from a European motorcycle vacation. I hope to write about it for the next issue. I no more than got back into town and we had massive rains resulting in some flooding and rather extensive damage at Spring Creek Park. We’ve been working long days putting it all back together. I did receive a bulletin from the AMA reaffirming that the following rule change will be in affect starting January 1, 2017. Any racer will have to be 14 on the day of the event in order to race a 250 in motocross. Anyone wishing to race a 450 in motocross will have to be 16. This is new for 2017, and we need to get the word out immediately before parents start buying new models. This chance applies to motocross only. I missed the last board meeting but we did have some vendors come in with sample and bids on year-end awards for all of our series. We are slowly moving ahead with the riding area near Houston MN, Tom and Karen Umphress are working on that project with the DNR and the county. Dealing with several agencies prolongs the process. I will have more next month as year-end business will be picking up. Remember that proposed rule changes need to be by the end of September at the very latest. They can be e-mailed to myself or the district office. See on the tracks, trails and roads of MN. Mike

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... District 16 Annual Banquet The 2016 District 16 Banquet is growing, improving, and should easily fall among the best ever. Notable changes include a full rework of the evening schedule where there will be two rooms for presenting awards. This will allow everyone to come back together for some fantastic drawings, a DJ and more. Best of all, it gives us a common area to celebrate the evening away after all the awards, dinner and activities. Drawings this year will include “2” new 2017 Honda Groms, 2 Yamaha generators, and a ton of other very cool items! One of the generators will be going to a random District 16 discounted Kalahari room holder for that night. So just by spending the night, you get a shot at winning it. A ticket order form is in the back of this issue on page 69, but even more convenient, there’s one on line at amadistrict16.com. You surely don’t have to be an awards winner to attend this weekend of fun. The very low room rates at the resort are available to anyone using the AMA District 16 discount up to the cut-off date. The fun is open to all of our riding family, so be sure to come join us in November! D23’s Trollhaugen Hare Scrambles moves up a week. Now running on September 25th in Dresser, Wisconsin, District 23 off road riders take on the Troll. Trollhaugen Memorial Race Track in Dresser, WI will be rocked for this legendary, once a year spectacle! The infamous Area 51 will give riders thrills and chills as they try to conquer the hills at the Troll. Four races for riders of every age, size and ability. And just like every Norsemen event, 50cc riders race for free. Gate fee is just $10 bucks. Make your plans to attend now!

Spring Creek’s Donny Day Draws 700 Plus Millille, Minnesota - July 15 By Rolfe Otterness
S
pring Creek Motocross Park’s Donny Schmit Memorial Amateur Race runs in conjunction with the national pro race each year, and this year ti was another huge success, pulling in well over 700 entries from many states. It is a fabulous opportunity to ride on a well-prepped national-caliber track, and tempts riders back year after year. Topping off the weekend, on Sunday another opportunity is presented, the Pro Track Challenge with a chance to tackle the Mount Martin terrain. Some rain fell overnight after Thursday’s practice session leaving the course a bit more wet than optimum, but after several motos it settled in for a very rideable surface under cloudy conditions. Sunday’s second day of amateur racing was much tougher as a thorough overnight drenching, courtesy of Mother N required a lot of bulldozing and a shortened route (less hills) so riders could actually navigate the track. Eventually a dry line formed and the track was much improved by the second set of motos with more maintenance by Johnny Martin and crew. In Friday’s schedule, the Open C class was one of the earlier classes to hit the track. Mitch Thelen was the early leader while Max Earley and Tayler Belle disputed second for a couple of laps. Earley eventually got by Belle and inched up on Thelen to search for a way by, but a mistake late in the moto dropped him back to third. Thelen cruised across the line with the win with Belle behind a bit. Earley maintained third past the checkers with Preston Cowing fourth and fifth going to Nathan Miklo. Moto two featured Thelen snapping up the lead again with Earley and Belle slotting in behind him. Thelen and Earley gapped Belle after a bit and Earley put on a white-flag-lap surge to catch and then pass the leader at the base of a hill, grabbing an inside line. Earley finished just a bike length or two in front for the win. Preston Cowing was pressuring Belle for

much of the race and he also made a last lap pass, giving him third while Belle dumped it and dropped back to tenth. Casey Paider inherited fourth with Levi Dertien rounding out the top five. Chase Becker shot off the line to lead the 14-24A class onto the slick Spring Creek track surface. Becker found enough traction to maintain his lead all the way to the checkered flag. Luke Perreault had to work a bit, passing Collin Reinhart and then Mick Olson, to go on to take second. Olson, Reinhart and Cody Hutshison were the next riders to hit the finish line jump. Diamonte Stugelmeyer nabbed the holeshot to lead the initial lap of moto two. Becker was in pursuit with Perreault and Reinhart in tow. Nuke Series ‘16 winding down As the season enters the final portion, racing still just as hot as ever! Elgin, IL’s Andrew Gerdau gets some encouragement on his chase to fifth overall in the large Open C class.

t was a great day for riding out at Motosports Park with the Nuke series winding down as the summer has flown by. The weather was perfect today, we have been getting pretty lucky on the weekends here in the Midwest with it being pretty hot, and then weekends cooling off. The track was in great shape today with some cool lines forming, and really tight battles in many classes. The crew kept things moving right along with minimal work needed between motos. 85Sr had a great turnout, starting off a great day of racing. In the first moto the gate dropped to Cameron Campbell grabbing the holeshot with Mitchell Malaney and John Perovic giving chase. As they came around the sweeper Perovic grabbed the inside and moved up to second, then giving Campbell a run for his money. They got up the hill and into the sand as Justin Oehlhof was on a charge and took over third before heading into the back of the track. Oehlhof kept the momentum going, but was unable to get around Perovic as they crossed the line. In the second moto Perovic took the win giving him the overall. Oehlhof finished 8

out front for an early lead followed by Cody Williams and Zach Coons, both having made the trip down from Wisconsin. Around the early turns Williams jumped into the lead, pulling the pack into the back of the track. Coons was on a mission and got around Tyrrell for second coming down the hill, and then took over the lead coming across the line to finish the first lap. Mark Marincic was on the gas through the moto, and now battling up to third place as the action got even more heated up front with Williams taking back the lead on the last lap. Coming into the final corner Marincic almost lost it with Eric Feuillerat coming close to making the pass. They came across the line with Williams taking the win, Coons in second and Marincic holding onto third. Fair Night at Woodstock MX Woodstock, Illinois - August 5
District 17 Stadium Motocross
A
nother perfect evening arrived just in time for the annual McHenry County Fair in Woodstock, IL. On this evening, motocross provided the entertainment, at least until the music took over later in the evening. A tweaked track provided the setting for a great crowd of racers on the modified night of racing. Modified, to get everything done in a matter of hours, by 9:30 pm. Tonight saw a slightly extended practice session, and then riders pulled pins for gate picks going into the mains no heat races. Extended laps for a main event only show. The eleven rider Women’s class got the evening of racing started. Erin Pusateri led them all off the line, with Kati Pfaff, Allie Roland and Emily Smith trailing. Smith stalled early in the first lap, dropping a couple spots. As they got into lap two, Pusateri made a few mistakes, and let Roland, who was now in second take over the lead. By the moto’s half way point, Roland had opened a nice lead. Pfaff was running in third, but Amy Garlanger passed her as Brooke Kennebeck moved up to fifth behind Pfaff, setting the final order. The Vintage class saw a fun match-up between newer, and older technology. Jay Jahns had his big Honda four stroke out front with Lance Gilbert running second through the first lap. On the gas in third, was Yamaha YZ125 rider Jordan Roxworthy. Never letting off, Roxworthy was working his trusty two stroke hard. He slipped past Gilbert, then spent the next three laps bouncing from one

side of the track to the other, looking to make something happen on Jahns. Just when it looked like Jahns would hold on, he spun sideways in a slick corner. Roxworthy kept the 125 revving and passed into the lead for an eventual win. This time the good old two stroke won out. The 85cc classes always have some really quick young riders - many of them racing every weekend somewhere. They make it look easy on the stadium track. In 85Sr, Zachery Brunner led with Trace Franzke in second for the first lap. Then, out of mid pack Hunter Billingsley just worked his way through riders, then past Franzke. Half a lap later he had passed Brunner and looked unstoppable. Next lap he was on the side of track, looking very disappointed with a me-
chanical failure. Brunner resumed his lead. Anthony Vargas was holding down third, getting pushed by Suzuki mounted Matt Calhoun. Just before the white flag, Calhoun passed into third. Vargas was next to have problems in the sand section, and didn’t finish as Wyatt Brock took over fourth ahead of James Waldron. The 85Jr class saw all sorts of great action. Elijah Tetzlaff had the right idea though - get out front, and leave it all behind. He did just that, with a little help from one of his closest competitors, Ryder Beth. Beth tucked into the inside going through the first corner, and went down. Tetzlaff just went away in the lead as a great battle took place behind him between Deegan Cooley, Noah Bindas, Kevin Huddleston, and Evan Griffiths. Beth was back up quickly, and on the gas. He went all the way through this pack, and into second place by the fourth lap. He had a little help as Cooley slid to the ground, but Beth was now in second to stay. The order pretty much held from there, with Tetzlaff never realizing what was going on behind him. CYCLE USA, September 2016

CYCLE USA, September 2016
In the +40 class, we saw too new “regular” faces tonight. Roy Nafzger and Everett Dahlberg both came out, making a rare appearance here. They took over out front right away, Dahlberg leading through the first lap. Nafzger had ridden a little earlier in the +25 class, and was jumping a large triple by the spectators. Dahlberg wasn’t, and was losing time because of it... but the landing quickly took a toll on Nafzger, and he too quit jumping it. Dahlberg held on for the win as Larry Bank and Steve Perkins finished 3-4 ahead of Frank Liroston. 520 Machinery/ FMF/ Works Connection backed Dahlberg, “I got the holeshot and had the long time Illinois veteran Roy Nafzger behind me the entire moto. He was pretty close early. He came up on me a couple times but then I would get away again. I raced out here last year, and like the new track they have this season. It is really great that the
Woodstock KTM guys are doing all this for the sport.” The 250B class had a messy first lap. Besides two riders down briefly in the first corner, Rj Mackenzie hit the big triple by the spectators when then race leader Justin Nalezny wasn’t. The result left them both picking up bikes in the proceeding corner. Kyle Schneider kept clean lines, and avoided everything to take the lead then, and never let go of it. Jacob Lorenz was in second early, then half way through the race got dropped back to fourth as Maximillian Richter and Justin Nalezny slid past him. With the white flag out, Schneider put in his last solid lap for the win, as Chad West found a way around Lorenz for fourth. The A classes had an extra purse tonight, $3000 divided up between 250 and Open A. Both classes saw Ohios’ Daniel Herrlein take the win ahead of Woodstock KTM’s Cody Vanbuskirk and Sportland2’s Suzuki mounted Alexander Nagy. Most of the night’s 85 riders came back together in the Open Mini class, with fourteen riders. This time Ryder Beth had a great start, and stayed on the bike. EVS/ Woodstock KTM/ Moose backed Beth, “I fell down twice in the other class, and had a lot of passing to do to get back up to second. This time I got a good start and won, so it was fun for sure.” Beth rode hard out front, with Elijah Tetzlaff just back a few bike lengths. Kevin Huddleston won the battle with Noah Bindas for third as Deegan Cooley made a late moto pass into fifth ahead of Evan Griffiths. SE Sales/ Fly/ 100% Kawasaki rider Tetzlaff was still pretty happy with his second place, after the earlier win. “I got a decent start and tried to push for it to catch Ryder. I’d make a mistake and he would pull back out, then I would sneak back up on him and not be able to try and pass. It was a good moto and a great race. I did my best, so I’m happy.” In 250C-2, Erik Carlson took the win on his Hall’s Husqvarna after a moto long effort to get a pass to stick on Sean Prenner. Carlson, “I started back in like fifth and had to really work. After the first lap I battled hard with the Honda rider (Prenner) for the rest of the race until the last half lap. I got under him and then jumped the wall into the sand section for the win, so it was great. This is my third race here, and I’m still in my first season.
I did a woods race back in April, and probably finished in like last place. I learned a lot there. I ride as much as possible, and I’m just getting things down with racing. Hall’s Cycles put me on a sweat ride and helped me a lot.” With all the fair rides, food vendors and other attractions going on in the background, and available to riders and their families, it was a really fun night. Many in the stands hadn’t seen motocross before, and the show surely helped build some new fans for future events. Hopefully even a few new racers! Echo Valley Hare Scrambles District 23 race sees another great turnout with over 250 entries Range Riders Motorcycle Club Brookston, Minnesota - August 7th By Paul Otto
T
wo hundred and fifty six of Minnesota’s best off-road racers showed up at the third annual Echo Valley Hare Scramble in Brookston, MN hosted by the Range Riders Motorcycle Club. Riders were greeted with a perfect day of upper seventy degree temp, a nine mile course consisting of a perfectly groomed motocross track, manicured grass track, tight technical woods and lots of rocks. Riders were treated to a little different start as they all had to straddle their rear wheel while hanging onto the rear fender. Not something you want to do if your old or short, or worse yet old and short. I think someone was doing a bloopers video with this starting procedure. AA saw the return of Nate Ferderer as he’s been racing most of the National events this year in preparation of the International Six Days Event in Spain. Anyone looking to help support Nate in his quest for a Gold Medal at the ISDE can purchase a t-shirt directly from Nate himself. From the end of the first lap Ferderer led every lap. Kyle Nelson on his KTM 150 was on the pipe and on Ferderer’s rear wheel trailing by seconds each lap. They gave spectators plenty to cheer about as they quickly got out front and pulled a good lead over the rest of the
field. When the checkered flag flew Nelson just couldn’t find the right line to get by, and Ferderer took the win. Rounding out the top three was Nick Swenson on his Fly Racing, Motorex, Checkpoint Racing CRF250. Things took a turn in the Senior A class as the points leader was reported out with a broken clavicle. Taking advantage of the opportunity was Jeremy Schmidt, coming off a hiatus from MX racing. Schmidt is showing some good results in his first year of woods racing and took the win. Second place went to Yamaha mounted Chad Tupper. Tupper having an off day hopes to bounce back and give Schmidt a run for the title. Rounding out the podium is the ever likeable rider Jason Hinkemeyer McCoy. and try a Hare Scramble or Enduro, as the clubs have reduced prices in some of the youth classes and for those adults looking for a change of pace or are uncertain about what to expect. There’s the Sportsman class so you don’t have the pressure of getting in the way. If you’re new to the sport, don’t hesitate to reach out as anyone will assist with questions and guide you through the process of getting started. Some great racing by all, but more important is that everyone got out and spent time with family and friends riding their dirt bikes. Doesn’t get any better than that. Half a weekend at Azzie ST Still better than a full washout - Saturday was fun Lake Mills, Wisconsin - July 16 By Bambi Yogerst
W
e pulled into Aztalan with lots of sunshine early Saturday afternoon to kick off the weekend of racing - what was suppose to be a two-day event. Saturday night was great... and the racing was as exciting as always. Early Sunday morning the rains came, along with storm sirens and plenty of wind. Needless to say, we lost our second day - but at least we got day one in. The club members worked diligently to prep the track on Saturday. Water, water and more water! It was all about keeping down the dust, and trying to beat the dry conditions mother nature delivered. Super Senior heat race one started with Dan Vonmoos and Steve Wasser leaving the line together. Coming out of turn two, Vonmoos was just ahead of Wasser, exactly they finished. Heat number two 80’s Singles and Twin/Vintage class winner Robert Reese with his wife Mia and son Ryder.
Helping to direct practice, Al Sumner seems to be entertaining as well!
#7 Ezra Brusky goes for a slide coming out of turn three behind #06 Loyal Prach
had Brad Boughton, Mike Yogerst, Mike Anschutz and Mark Harris coming off the start line about even. By the time they exited turn two, Harris dropped behind. Boughton had the lead, with Anschutz on his heals the entire race. Yogerst was running in third, then got loose dirt on the outside of the track causing him to go down, snapping the left side of his handle bar in two. Thanks to two of the younger riders Micheal Vanlangen and
Ryan Weber, Yogerst was up and ready for the main with a new set of bars! As the main event light turned green, Wasser and Boughton rolled off the line first. Going into turn one Boughton led Anschutz, followed by Wasser. Jeff Chromy and Yogerst were side by side until turn four when Chromy dropped back to fourth. At the half way point, Boughton still led, but he had Anschutz looking for the opportunity to make a move around him. Yogerst got the opportunity and went around Wasser to take over third. Boughton took the checker flag for the win. Blake Barry and Michael Van Langen won their heat races and went on to be first on the starting line for the Open 250+ class main. Just after a lap in, the red flag came out after a couple of bikes down between turns one and two. On the restart, Barry hit turn one first with Colin Brill on his Yamaha right behind. Cody Funk joined in, pulling next to Brill in turn four. Barry pulled ahead while Funk got the pass on Brill. Michael Van Langen caught Brill and made the pass in lap four. The half way signal is given with Funk gaining ground on Barry. Barry maintained his lead, despite coming up on lap traffic and a little bobble by both himself and Funk. CYCLE USA, September 2016

Sergius Figliuzzi bolted out to an early lead in the +40 class main event, leaving Jack Kainz and Jim Kirschbaum to battle for second. Going at it side by side through the turns and straights, lap after lap. Finally Kainz pulled ahead briefly, before Kirschbaum plunges down to the inside to take second place coming out of turn four. Brad Boughton pulled close to Kainz, looking like he may challenge as the white flag flew. The positions didn’t change as Figliuzzi took the win. Congratulations to the winners! See you next time - and hopefully we’ll get all our races in for September!

lasts of rain in the few days prior to the Greg Moss Memorial hare scramble in Byron, IL had everyone worried about sloppy conditions. Fortunately, the amount of rain that hit the ground only created perfect-like conditions. A triple co-sanction between WFO Promotions, AMA District 17 and AMA District 16 brought 250+ entries to Byron Motorsports Park for this annual event. With no quads classes at this event, the course, set up by Ryan Moss and the Forest City Riders club was laid out over a mix of tight and technical trail, some open and flowing trail, a gnarly endurocross section and a fast motocross segment. This event, a favorite amongst many racers, also pays tribute to the late Greg Moss, a key figure of woods racing in the Midwest. The rather large turnout made for great racing. In the fifteen rider 50cc 7-8 class, #5 Levi Fortune took home the win followed by the #36 of Regan Doerr and the
65cc rider Chasen Orme with father Lee behind him.
#42 of Reece Doerr. In the highly competitive 65cc Beginner class, Lane Davis took the win with Riley Roberts and Kyle Walker rounding out the podium of the
twenty-four rider class. In the morning mini race, your overall winner was Buddy Fortune out of the Supermini class. Kane Ulve and Kyle

Roberts rounded out the Supermini podiums. In the 85cc class, Kawasakis swept the podium with Cody Stewart on top, edging out Elijah Berryman and Jayson Crawford. The fourteen rider Women’s class saw Allie Roland take the win aboard her Kawasaki KX100. Katie Redell returned to the class, after racing the 98200cc C class all season, to finish second. BriAnn Stocklen aboard her KTM finished third. In the morning big bike race, Elijah Otterbach took the overall win along with the win in the 98-200C class. Jhadyn Walker finished second aboard his Yamaha, and Tyler Lueschow out of New Glarus, WI finished third. In 201Open C, Wisconsin native Mitch Burth took the win over Brandon Griffiths and Erik Carlson. In the AA class, current WFO and District 17 points leader Cody Barnes had some of his stiffest competition of

the year in the form of a Fun Mart Cycle Suzuki-mounted Adam Bonneur. Barnes ripped the holeshot aboard his Gieson Motorsports Yamaha and led the pack into the woods. It was Bonneur, however, leading as they hit the endurocross section at the end of lap one. Bonneur and Barnes seemed to battle all afternoon with Bonneur having the advantage for most of the race. Unfortunately with three laps to go, Bonneur’s front brakes faded out due to a hole in the brake line, allowing Barnes to get by and pull away for the overall win. Bonneur did manage to hold onto second, as Colt Converse rounded out the AA podium in third. In the Open A class, Husqvarna mounted Benjamin Schmidt and KTM rider Colten Zuidema put on a show with exciting passes and close racing for almost the entire 1 hour 45 minute race. Winning weekend in Mankato Mankato, Minnesota - August 14 Motokazie Motocross
R
acing in District 23 returned to Mankato mid August, and everyone here was given a great weekend. Saturday’s practice was followed by racing on Sunday... and the tracks were in great shape after mid week rains, and some extra effort by the Motokazie crew. Many racers were here just because they like racing at this facility, a few were looking for that extra track time before September’s D23 Premier weekend with the bonus points. Whatever the reason, it was a fun weekend. We started our day checking out the separate PeeWee track that was buzzing with the sport’s youngest racers, and a lot of smiling parents and family members cheering them all on. Calum Fisher took both moto wins in the 50cc Shift Shaft class. He led all the way in moto one ahead of Easton Hickok and Jacob Theis. In the second moto, Hickok led early, only to see Fisher scream past during the first lap. Hickok suffered a brief tip over mid moto, and dropped back to six. Theis finished second ahead of Nathan Walter. Wyatt Niedfeldt won both motos of 50cc Single/Multi ahead of Jameson Olson, Calum Fisher and Hudson Beckman. He then returned and raced in the 50cc Injected class, where he finished second in both motos behind Briar Madison. Carson O’Connor and Jameson Olson rounded out the top four in that class in both motos. The 50cc 7-8 class saw riders putting in some quick laps, with Atwater, MN’s Braxton Kragenbring showing everyone the fast way around the track. Briar Madison had a great battle with John Grommersch for second. Both riders being local residents of Mankato, 24

LeCenter, MN’s Austin Kristiansen won the first moto ahead of Mitchell Prescott and Nic Juen. Star Cycle/ Motokazie/ Black Diamond/ Pro-Action backed Kristiansen was out front off the start in moto two as well, and just as it looked like he was getting ready to pull away, Hunter Meyer latched onto his rear fender. Mitchell Prescott was running in third and in a tussle with Juen and Jacob Prescott. As they went into the second lap, through the starting area Meyer pushed his way past Kristiansen for the lead. Meyer, “I just tried to stay clean through the first few corners and out of trouble. Then I made as many passes right away as I could, grabbing some good lines. I went inside Austin and managed to pull out a little for the win. I missed the first moto when I couldn’t get my bike started, so this made up for it. Boaz and Cassandra Hall went 2-3 in both motos. The day wrapped up early afternoon. The Motokazie team runs a tight ship, and quick program, and it is done without skimping on track prep or by cutting laps. Mid-Summer Fun at Sunset Walnut, Illinois - July 10 By Josh Rud, www.ShiftOnePhotography
J
uly tenth kicked off some exciting racing out at Sunset Ridge MX with the summer cruising right along. There was a great turn-out today, along with the addition of the quads it made for a ton good racing to watch. Some weather blowing through to kept things interesting as well. Another special occasion today was Chase Sexton being out at the track. I’m sure he will come back at some point, but the next day his entire family would be on their way to his new home in Florida. The track was in awesome shape as always, with some big ruts forming in a few spots and a lot of great lines to keep things fantastic. The crew out at Sunset Ridge kept things moving a long as quickly as ever - and the event ran smooth as it could ever be. Even the little rain coming through didn’t slow any-
thing down. There was some great racing in a not so often seen class today - being Mini Open 65/85. In the first moto things got moving with Brandon Martyniak jumping out front followed by Dj Gritzmacher and Anthony Edgerton. They came up the hill after the first turn with Gritzmacher jumping out front, shifting Martyniak back to second place. The pack of riders were sticking pretty close in the front with Edgerton putting the pressure on, and finally getting up to second. On the last lap Johnny Weber turned up the heat coming out of sitting in wait in fourth. He put in some great turns, jumping all the way up to second, leav-

ing Edgerton in third. In the second moto it was the exact same finish Giving Gritzmacher the overall for the day. The Quads were out in force today putting on some great racing. Quad C was up with Clint Nekola winning the first moto with Jeremiah Stearns and Luke Meyer rounding out the podium. The second moto blasted out of the gate with Trent Roland out front with the holeshot being hunted down by Noah Samuel and Tyler Shugars. Heading down the ski jump Meyers was on a mission jumping into third and pushing into second through the rollers. Samuel was holding down third until Shugars got an inside line into the front straight taking over. Meanwhile up front Meyer was pushing it hard and moved into the lead with Roland still holding second. As the race came to a close Roland got hung up allowing Stearns to get into the mix
moving all the way to second with Nekola riding right behind him for third in one swoop. The race ended reverse of the first moto with Meyer taking the win, Stearns in second and Nekola third. This gave the overall to Rock City, IL’s Meyer followed by Stearns and Nekola. There was a lot of action in Super Mini, as the first moto went to Wisconsin’s Bryce Hansen on the Kawasaki followed up by Conner Burger and Dj Gritzmacher. The second moto dropped with Monroe Center, IL’s Burger out front with Hansen and Zenon Shain close behind. Heading up the hill after the start Hansen jumped into the lead leaving Burger to battle with Shain. In the back of the track Robert Lopez was turning up the heat and put himself in third. This didn’t last long as Gritzmacher was coming back from a bad start and took over the position shortly after. Things got more interesting as Gritzmacher tipped it over leaving third open for Shain to make a comeback. Burger was putting on a hard race against Hansen as the laps came to a close. The checkers flew giving Hansen the win, Burger second and Shain third. The overall for the day went to Hansen with Burger in second. 250C riders were out in force today for some good action as always. With twenty-three riders signing up there was certainly a lot of passing going on all around the track. In the first moto Tyler Evensen took the win with Chase Boykin in second and Paul Law third. The second moto dropped later in the day with Law taking the holeshot followed by Evensen and Brock Shelton. Into the second turn Evensen took over the lead with Law not far behind, keeping up the pace. Coming back around for the third lap Law had pushed back into first as Shelton was still in third. Evensen got the lead back as the pack was getting tight. Around the back of track something happened with Evensen coming toward the line, as everyone had shifted up with Law in the lead, Shelton second and Boykin moving into third and Evensen now in fourth. Around the last turn Shelton dug in hard and managed to grab the lead before the line giving him the win and the overall having a fourth place in the first moto. This gave Law second overall and Boykin grabbed third for the day. The top four all tied with a two moto combined score of five... very good close racing. 30

In an effort to get the Pro riders done early, allowing time for them to get ready for Peoria the next day, the two GNCC classes ran next. We’ll never be able to explain how fast, close and exciting the racing was in these two classes, but it was really good. The hillside, covered with spectators were on their feet the entire time, through both of the twenty lap fea-
ast year was our maiden trip to the annual Bob Walters Memorial dirt track, hosted by the Galesburg Motorcycle Club. We went away impressed, and this year was the same, even more so. The weather was perfect, track was great, and the spectator hill was covered with excited fans. Add in a bunch of great racing, and it Trevor Tidwell won was a fantastic evening for sure. the 50cc 4-8 class The $10,000 plus purse helped for sure. The club knows how to put on a great show. Main event racing kicked off with a Bultaco Astro Cup event, featuring riders on the long past Bultaco motorcycles. Many of these bikes looked like they belonged in a showroom somewhere vs on a race track - but it was a fun show. Working his way to the front to take the eventual win was none other than the very famous Chris Carr. Charles Roberts and Darren Carter (both of IL) finished behind him in the fourteen rider group.

tured events. After all the heat races wittled the group down, fourteen riders lined up for the GNCC Expert class. Out front from start to finish was Washington’s Sam Halbert. He never gapped the always changing crowd behind him that was led early on by Illinois’ own Rob Pearson. The racing was intense, and slowly Pearson dropped a few spots, to finish fifth. California’s Briar Bauman and Dominic Colindres scraped plastic as they finished 2-3 ahead of Oregon’s Davis Fisher. him all the way. The dozen riders were tight and racing hard all the way to the back of the field. Just past the half way point, Luker shoved his way under for the lead. It wasn’t done there, and the close racing went right to the checkers, with Luker holding on. Racing shifted gears in a big way after all that action, as the night’s youngest riders hit the track, in the 50cc classes. Cool thing, the spectators were all cranked up at this point, and the enthusiasm never let up as they cheered and supported the amateur classes all night long. In 50cc 4-8 Shaft, Pekin, IL’s own Konnor Copelen got a good jump at the green light and led them to the end. It wasn’t without a challenge though, as he got pushed hard in the final laps by North Carolina’s Nicholas Fox, as Michael Camp stuck to them in third.
In the 50cc Chain group, Trevor Tidwell was the most impressive. The young rider kept it pinned around the track for a fantastic win. He left the close racing behind. Trenton Crow ran in second for two laps, with Cayden Cox looking for a way around. Cox went wide to the outside through turns 1-2, then down the back straight. Hitting turn three he took that momentum back low to get by Crow for second. Nine riders, all from Illinois made up the 65cc 7-11 class. After a little finess in the first couple turns, the order in the front was locked in to the end. Chase Saathoff put his Kawasaki out front, leading Tyler Tidwell and Chase Anderson. Saathoff returned in the 85cc class, leading every lap in that class as well. Peoria, IL’s Johnnie Baggott worked his way up and won the Vintage class
ahead of Missouri’s Matt McCracken and Matt Ho. Baggott after the win, “This Galesburg track and the crew are unbelievable. With the rain we had this week, the crew did an excellent job on everything. The track is tacky, and you can go pretty much anywhere you want to go. I didn’t get the holeshot out here this time, but came out of it alright.” Dallas Daniels made the short trip over from Mattoon a good one, winning the very competitive 250cc class on his Yamaha. It took some work, but Gunner Schmidgall locked in second place ahead of Alex Sandoval and Joshua Cecil. Daniels, with a big smile in the pits said, “The race went really well. I got the holeshot and stayed out front. They were on me for a little bit, but then I pulled away. The big thing was a good start, but then consistent laps. I didn’t get the best Michael Camp getting eveything he can out of the little Yamaha PW for third place in 51 Shaft.
jump in the heat and still got to the front, so everything is working well. The track was rough in practice but I found some good lines and it kept getting better. This is the first time out on this bike. I like racing here when they have all the fans, and the pros, it makes for a really good night.” Rob Gessner came west from Ohio to top both the Senior and Super Senior classes, pretty much leading every lap through his heats and main events. Gessner couldn’t have been happier, or more impressed with the event, “The track is spectacular tonight. Nice and tacky - you can ride it really hard or nice and easy down low. They do a hell of a good job on everything here. Running the event, working on the track and putting on a great show.” Wisconsin’s Dj Slosser took the big win in the 450cc class ahead of Kolton Featherston, and Indiana’s Jeremiah Duffy. Saint Jocob, IL’s Matthew Guenther finished fifth after coming from the back of the class. “I was on the back row and got pushed wide as we came into the first corners. Jeremiah (Duffy) was just ahead of me and he was getting through the riders pretty good. I tucked in with him and just moved up. He ended up third. I think if I had a grooved tire it would have hooked up even better, but things are good out there. It was fun just the same and I’m very happy.” The night’s show officially kicked off at 6pm, but there was plenty going on before that making it worth showing up early. A couple displays, great food, drink, practice running, and can you ever get enough of the racing atmosphere? The racing ended just after 11pm, and it was like a parade leaving the facility - so many fans stuck around until the end, it was simply one more example of how cool this event was - once again. Before the first lap finished though all the racers shuffled and it was the Honda of Chance Trigalet out front, Yamaha racer Damon Evans just behind, while Cox had dropped to third. Evans wasn’t satisfied and stayed hard on the throttle, getting the pass on Trigalet in the final lap as they finished ahead of Cox and Hagios Dewet. Dewet had a rough start and had to work his way through almost the pack. Missing the podium by one place obviously did not sit well with Dewet. He launched off the start in moto two and stayed on the back wheel of Evans for a couple laps. Getting into lapped traffic allowed Evans to pull away to take the checkered for a 1-1 overall. Trigalet was never far behind Dewet, and Dewit’s 4-2 finishes were good for third overall. Supermini is often a class with two vastly different racers – those starting the move up from the smeller classes and kids not quite ready for a 250. That makes racing in this class a battle every time. Conner Burger owned the start in moto one with his KTM, but he was quickly passed by Husky rider Kole Medwid. Medwid held the lead into the final lap when he ran into problems, managing only a sixth place finish. Burger

Alyssa Cole stayed close and finished fourth. Shain was focused in the second moto and when the gate twitched he was on it, getting a sweet holeshot in front of his good buddy Burger. Burger swung wide and took an outside line in the first turn. Not able to keep up his speed he let several racers get by on the inside. One of those racers was Medwid. He had the track figured out this time and led the field past the finish for every lap. Medwid earned the checkered, but because of his rough first moto he settled for fourth overall. Burger made a few passes, and locked into the line behind Medwid. Moto two’s second place finish was enough to give Burger the top spot overall for the day. Shain and Singleton battled again, but this time it was Singleton getting a late-race pass. Singleton revved his Yamaha as he cleared the checkered in the third spot again. Azzie Pro-Am Brings 400 Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 14 By Morgan Strauss
I
t was a perfect summer day for the August ProAm at Aztalan Cycle Club. Not only did we beat the August heat, but also had about 400 entries for a full day of racing. With the number of participants and a purse in excess of $6,000 for the Pro-Am classes, it was sure to be an exciting and competitive day of racing. Two-stroke B/C was the third big bike class of the day to hit the track. Jeremy Noreen was on the throttle for the holeshot in moto one. As the group made their way to the back sand section, Kristopher Korn had already moved in for the pass, now followed by Noreen, Cody Sigler, Ryder Sigler and Braden Warner. By the start of the third lap, the Sigler boys maintained their positions, but Warner started to close the gap for fourth. By the time they reached the plateau, Warner took the opportunity and was able to move around Ryder Sigler for the position. Korn held onto first until the checkers, followed by Noreen, Cody
Sigler and Warner. As the gate dropped for moto two, Cody Raduenz pulled the holeshot, and held the lead for half the lap, until Cody Sigler found the chance to slip past. Raduenz continued in second, followed by Warner, Noreen and Ryder Sigler. Noreen and Ryder Sigler battled closely until the middle of the second lap when Noreen boggled, allowing Sigler to move into fourth. Ryder Sigler wasn’t letting off the throttle there, and started to put the pressure on Warner for third. By the start of the third lap, Sigler found the opportunity to make the pass. AT the end, Cody Sigler had a significant lead on the rest of the group, with Raduenz, Ryder Sigler and Warner behind. Cody Sigler (3/1) took the overall, with Ryder Sigler (5/3) second and Warner (4/4) third. Blake Hansen took the Open B class overall.

It was a great day in Open B as SE Sales rider Blake Hansen pulled the holeshot in moto one. As they made it to the plateau, Jacob Jesko, Jake Garwood and Tyler Vacala were shortly behind. Halfway through, you could tell Hansen wasn’t going to give up his drive for first anytime soon. Jesko and Garwood also held onto a strong second and third. Somewhere in the third lap, Vacala stumbled, allowing Austin Kenefick to slip into fourth now followed by Trevin, Simes and Nate Telfer. They held onto their same positions until the checkers. It was a change-up in the start of moto two when Garwood was on the throttle for the holeshot, with Hansen right there. Shortly behind, Jesko held onto third while Simes and Telfer battled closely for fourth. The two kept a close gap on each other until the third lap when Telfer allowed Eric Leach and Bend Paderta the chance to slip by. As the white flag flew for the last lap, Garwood and Hansen continued their battle. Hansen eventually found his chance and was able to make the move around for first.
Garwood, “I had a lot of fun racing at Aztalan. I got good starts and had a blast moving up front in my motos. The track had perfect dirt and got nice and rough throughout the afternoon. Blake Hansen and I had a really close battle at the end of the day, but he ended up passing me last lap. I’d like to thank my family and friends for coming out and cheering me on, I couldn’t thank them enough.” When the gate dropped for Senior +40, Andy Bowman was the first around the corner for the holeshot in moto one. As they reached the back sand section Robert Behrens had already made the pass into first, with Marc Ottenad and Bowman close behind. Behrens started to put a small gap on second and third place, and by this time, Brian McCanna moved into fourth with James Coons holding onto fifth. In the second moto, Behrens was ready to steal the holeshot in front of the rest of the group, not giving up his momentum to go for yet another win. Ottenad held onto a strong second, but this time McCanna pushed his way into third with Bowman shortly

behind. Behrens with a perfect 1/1 day took the overall, with Ottenad (2/2) second and McCanna (4/3) third. It was an exciting day for Open A with the significant purse on the line and a large class of talented, competitive riders. When the gates dropped, Illinois’ Cody Vanbuskirk pushed his way to the front of the group for the holeshot with Justin Wolf and Cody Williams right on his fender. By the start of the second lap, Williams already found the opportunity to move around Wolf for second and quickly started to gain time on Vanbuskirk. As the two battled, Zach Coons, Wolf, Josh Philbrick and Ty Tyrrell held onto the following positions. By the start of the next lap, Benjamin Nelko slipped past Tyrrell for sixth. As the race hit the halfway point, Vanbuskirk and Williams started to put a small gap on the rest of the group. At this time, Daniel Herrlein pushed his way to up sixth and started to pressure Philbrick. By the seventh lap, Herrlein found his chance to pass Philbrick and move into fifth behind Wolf. Herrlein then was able to move around him for fourth. By the eighth lap, Williams finally found his chance to slip past Vanbuskirk for first and held onto the position until the checkers. In the second moto, Vanbuskirk once again took the holeshot with Coons, Herrlein, and Williams shortly behind. By the middle of the race, Herrlein started to put pressure on Coons for second and eventually was able to make the pass. Williams also began to put some time on Coons, and was able to push into third. Williams wasn’t stopping there, and eventually used Herrlein’s stumble as an advantage to slip into second. Although he closed the gap on Vanbuskirk, he wasn’t able to take over the first place position before the last lap. Vanbuskirk (2/1) walked away with the overall with Williams (1/2) second and Coons third. Vanbuskirk on the day, “The Aztalan Pro-Am went well for me, I had a lot of fun battling with some fast guys all day. I ended up winning four out of the six motos I raced. The track was the best I’ve ever seen it. It got nice and rough and had multiple lines, which made for

some great racing. I actually made a last minute decision to pull out of Unadilla due to sickness, but was starting to feel better by the time Sunday came around. Big thanks to everyone involved with the event and also a huge thanks to my sponsors: Woodstock KTM, Tom Zont Racing, Decal Works, Parts Unlimited, Thor, Alpinestar, Mx-Tech, EVS, 100%, FMF, Dirt Tricks, Acerbis, Works Connection & Club57.” Justin Oehlhof stole the holeshot when 85cc 9-13 hit the track in moto one, with Cole Godfrey right on his fender as Ryder Beth and Spencer Hein held onto third and fourth. When the group made it to the start jump in the third lap, Godfrey quickly closed the gap on Oehlhof and the two battled for first. This lasted until the last lap before Oehlhof was able to pull away and put a little time between them. Beth, Hein and Noah Bindas held onto the following positions. In the sec-
ond moto, Oehlhof once again was on the throttle for the holeshot. Oehlhof and Godfrey started their battle once again in the second lap, with Oehlhof coming out on top. Once again, Aztalan Cycle Club had perfect weather for a perfect day of racing. There were a lot of fast riders, a great group of spectators, and the whole crew at Azzie did a great job of preparing the track and maintaining it all day for competitive racing. Aztalan Cycle Club would like to send a huge thank you to Rob’s Performance Motorsports, Triton Trailers, Sportland 2, Midwest Electric, Best Tile Werks, Aztalan Inn, Schweighardt Concrete, Chris Kau and Ben Carlson from Bell Helmets for sponsoring this year’s Pro-Am. We wouldn’t have been able to put on such a successful day of racing without you all! Thank you to all the competitors and everyone else who spent their Sunday at the track. CYCLE USA, September 2016

ound six of the Berm Benders Raceway Civil Series hosted by the Caswell family was like many other moto weekends there this season, with showers on Friday night, a busy practice day and great track preparation for Sunday racing. Owner Kurt Caswell, who was recovering from a recent hip surgery, maintained his usual high standards with both the track and his crew delivering an exceptional weekend of moto family fun. The second race of the day was one of the spectators’ favorites, 50cc Multi-speed 4-8. With their little boots firmly placed on the starting line the gate dropped and Kahler Oman took an early lead followed by Karsen Tabaka and Deegan Leaf. As is customary with the little rippers, tip overs and collisions peppered the track. Kurt Caswell, mid track on one crutch, cheered encouragements and the ever smooth Ron Loberg cruised around picking up determined racers, helping them restart their bike and sending them on their way with a “Good job!”. The first moto finished as it started but the second moto was a combination of great starts, frequent position changes and perseverance. No one on the track is more determined than these little warriors. This time Tabaka took the win and the overall with Omann in second and Leaf rounding out the top three. My favorite race of the day was Womens. Filled with great riders and fierce competitors, the first moto dropped with Grace Eiden last out of the gate. Relentlessly she fought her way through the pack. Corner by corner she passed everyone including second position Mariah Womens #77 Mariah Braastad leads #28 Katie
Third lap Trisha Olson charged hard and capitalized on an Eiden tip over, seizing third for the moto. Vanderwerf got the overall despite racing with broken ribs, she is one tough competitor! Braastad took second and Eiden third for the day. As the weekend ended with trophies, hugs and high fives from competitors, family and fans - I observed in wonder at what a great sport this is, and gratefully state what a thrilling day of racing it was.

Treinen tops D23’s St Croix St Croix Falls, Wisconsin - July 30 By Tim McBride
M
errill Wisconsin’s Robert Treinen scored a pair of Pro class victories at the AMA District 23 short track event hosted by the Shadow Valley Drifters, held at the St Croix Speedway located just north of St. Croix Falls, Wi. Treinen’s first win on the day came in the 450 Semi Pro class were he scored the runaway win followed by Andrew Hook who worked his way past Eagar Wisconsin’s Brian Frandsen for second, and appeared to be gaining ground on the race leader, but ran out of laps. The Open Pro main event saw the fast starting Treinen out front again only this time he was in close company with Hook, Frandsen and veteran Troy Brisbin. Hook was able to make a couple runs at Treinen as they exited turn four but came up a bit short at the checkered flag. Treinen was unavailable for comment, but Hook elaborated on his performance. Hook, “The track kept getting faster as the day went on,” Hook explained. “I pulled a tooth off (his rear sprocket) after practice, and took another one off after the heats. I started running out of gearing options! I do have to work on my starts though.” In the ever popular Maddog class Dan Bailey scored a hard fought victory over some very fast performers in the likes of Hook, Adam Schmidt, Zach Bailey and the rest of the eleven rider contingent. In the four wheel ranks Ryan Bruggerman was the man to beat in two classes. Bruggeman topped the Open A class with Mark Olsen, Tim Hinz, Justin Berhow and Branden Mattson in close contention. In Open Pro, Bruggerman was ahead of Hinz, Berhow, Olson and Mattson. Motorcycle Results: Vint Twin: 1.Eric Dietz

Fantastic Lake County Fair SX
The bleachers were filling up even before the first motos got underway.
Grayslake, Illinois - July 27 Woodstock Motocross
L
ake County Fair SX... sort of a legendary race in these parts, has seen much change over the years. It was a huge fan show drawing riders from all around the country years ago, with little opportunity for the regular local racers. Then as the economy tanked, so did this event. The fairgrounds moved, and eventually the event completely fell off the schedules. Last year the blossoming Woodstock MX team gave it new life,
Cody Vanbuskirk has been riding well all season, tonight working through the pack for second in Open A.
and for the first time ever as an event offering classes for everyone. It was a hit. This year it is back, and first thing anyone would notice, is the track is huge big everything. A raised starting line, bigger jumps (with landings) and even a bigger space used for the new track. The event still packed the vast bleachers, and again this year, the pits were overflowing with riders. Tip if going next year, get there early. The racing was great - with excitement for everyone in every class. Good news is that with the success, the Woodstock team is already
excited and talking about next year. As the racing kicked off in the 85Sr class, Spencer Hein and Brandon Martyniak fought through the first lap, with Martyniak eventually securing the lead. As those two opened a small gap, Anthony Vargas, Zachary Brunner and Trace Franzke were fighting over the next spots. Those three stayed close all moto, with Franzke making a late move up into fourth behind Vargas. After the win, Martyniak was pretty happy. “The track was great. I got a really good start, but drifted a little too wide and Spencer was just on me. Winning this is good, but I’m really looking to try and win the big Mini Open class later in the night.” The 85Jr class was a good one, and showed why the race is never over till it actually is. Out front right away, Anthony Edgerton started opening a lead right out of turn two. The other top finishers from the heat race were all working through the pack. By the second lap, they were in position, but a good margin back from Edgerton. Elijah Tetzlaff was second, just ahead of Ryder Beth and Deegan Cooley. As the riders went into the third lap of five, Edgerton was already working through lappers, when he simply tipped over in a steep berm. Unable to get his bike up and started, he dropped to mid-pack, giving up the comfortable lead he had built. When the checkered flag came out, the best he could do was work back up to sixth. Tetzlaff took the win ahead of Beth and Cooley, as Mario Lopez moved into fourth CYCLE USA, September 2016

ahead of Noah Bindas, on the last lap. The 50Sr class saw nine riders hit the track... and you would have thought it was the pro show from the spectator involvement. The packed bleachers erupted with every pass, or close call and these youngsters delivered plenty. The crowd just loved the youngsters here and in 50Jr. In Sr, out of the gate North Aurora, IL’s Preston Zollers grabbed the lead, and went to work extending it right away. Late in the lap, he slid down in a corner, dropping way back. Riley Busse and Branden Wereski took over out front, and were swapping positions multiple times through the next two laps. Meantime, Zollers was on a roll, climbing all the way back up to third. As Wereski led, the white flag came out, with the three now very close. Zollers railed through a jump section passing Busse, then immediately went by Wereski for the lead. The pass distracted Wereski, as Busse went past Wereski for second just before the checkered flag. The action was perfect for the fans in the stands and the pits. 50Jr looked to be a little more calm, that was until the last lap. Nolan Simonton had led all the way, with Bryce Arnold on his Honda and Jayden Adams nipping at his heals. As they hit a deeper sand corner for the last time, Adams went

by Arnold, into second. Then, with just a few sections of the track left, he found a way under Simonton for the lead and eventual win on his SE Sales backed KTM.
Elijah Tetzlaff continues to turn heads in the 85Jr class, getting another win tonight.
As if the action wasn’t already in high gear, the twenty-six rider 250C class was next. With all the riders taking the single gate drop, you knew they would line the track with action front to back. As they rounded the first turn Brock Shelton had his Woodstock/ Factory Connection KTM out front. Right on him was Logan Rusk on his Honda. As the two immediately went at it, Tanyon Palka and Brandon Jackson fought over third... with a number of riders on their rear fenders, who it was constantly changed. By the mid point little had changed, and all the positions were still being fought for, as Jackson now held third. When the white flag came out, Rusk made a move for the lead. Rusk, after the moto, “We both got a good start and obviously rode as hard as we could. I luckily got him in the end and it was a lot of fun. The track is cool, it is bigger and lets you open it up a bit more, yet it is pretty technical, and still stadium style.” Rusk had pulled off his last lap pass, and Shelton finished second ahead of Jackson. Corey Robins climbed past a couple riders late in the moto to finish an impressive fifth. Shelton after finishing second, was all smiles, “I got the holeshot, then cased the big triple out in the middle on the opening lap, and CYCLE USA, September 2016

dropped my bars down near the tank. (Laughing) I’m a tall rider and my knees were hitting the bars and such. It was messing me up in the turns as well as the jumps. I held on as long as possible, but it was really hard with them down like that. It was a good moto, I loved the track and it was a great time for sure.” For the Pro classes, there was a good payout, drawing a fourteen rider 250A class lineup. The first effort to run the class ended in a red flagged moto as heat winner Travis Sewell took a violent tumble in the third lap. Sewell ended up with substantial injuries, not only ending his evening, but season. Our thoughts go out to him for a solid recovery. When the race re-started, you could feel the level of aggression the pack had been showing earlier in the night was tamed down a bit - most likely a good thing. Through the heats, and first couple laps of the red flagged moto, it was pretty crazy. Now it was simply fast riding, with a little less edge to it. Harvard, IL’s Cody Vanbuskirk led off the start. Ohio’s Daniel Herrlein took 56

many of the top performers from earlier in the night. Out of the first turn, Elijah Tetzlaff was on fire, leading them all. It turned into a real battle with Dalton Hein pushing his way into second, as Anthony Edgerton, Ryder Beth and Robert Lopez were really mixing it up. Hein, after the moto, “I didn’t get the greatest of starts, but quickly got into second on the first lap. It took me about another lap to get by the leader. I finally got that middle dragon-back section down, and that helped a lot. Once there, I was able to make up some time and right everything I was fighting earlier. It was great getting the win. I’d like to thank Team VRM, SE Sales, Rob’s Performance and my mom and dad for supporting all this.” Once out front, Hein had a clear track and never gave an inch as he went to the win. Edgerton kept pushing Tetzlaff until he found a way into second to set the final order in the eighteen rider class. The Open A class saw many of the same riders that were on 250’s, and Kyle White led early. He eventually dropped back a bit, as Herrlein took over out front. Wisconsin’s Cody Williams was charging in second as Tylor Skodras found some extra momentum, and was looking really good in third by the half way point. Coming from mid-pack, Vanbuskirk looked like he found another gear on the track, climbing all the way to second in the final laps.
over the lead in the third lap, going on for the eventual win. Kyle White climbed ahead to a solid third place finish, just ahead of Cody Williams, who also spent the entire moto moving up from a mid-pack start. Kenosha, WI’s Nickolas Lorenz had a tough heat race, finishing back in sixth. He left that all behind as the main came off the gate. Grabbing the holeshot, he felt some heat early from Maximillian Richter, then pulled away. Kyle Kunstman rode in third, close to Richter all the way to the end. The Open Mini Kyle White started the night class returned with off with a win in the +25 class.
Vanbuskirk after the great ride, “I had a lot of work, as I almost missed the gate drop. I was sitting in the pits when I heard our class was on the gate. I got there and started in the back row. I just put my head down and charged hard. I got through the pack well and into second on the last lap. It would have been fun to start out front and go for the win, but this worked out. I’d like to send out a huge thank you to Woodstock KTM, Tom Zont Racing and Decal Works.” It was a fitting race late in the program for all the fans... and just one more example of the great night. Till next year when we return, here’s to even bigger and better!

Splinter Creek Dirt Riders D17 Bonus Points Race
Coming in to the first turn are 14-24 winner Zachary Meyers (729), and 30A racers Billy Fosnock (598) and Adam Wright (x).
Fosterburg, Illinois- July 24 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
T
he Splinter Creek Dirt Riders hosted a round of the District 17 Bonus Points races in late July. SCDR is located in Fosterburg, Illinois, and being in the St. Louis area it one of the most southern tracks in the district. It’s a club track that hosts TT, Flat Track and Motocross races. Last year they had the worst moto luck ever with each and every event they tried to run rained out! This year the rain came early in the week, making it a challenge to get work done on the track, but come race day they were ready. By Sunday they were almost praying for some rain though - as temperatures were at the 100 degree mark and the heat index was 119! To say it was hot was an understatement. It was brutal. Even with the track drying so quick, the club did a good job of keeping enough water to avoid dust. Great job!! You would think as much as everyone was sweating we should have been wa58

tering the track ourselves. To every rider who came and raced, Outstanding job! You showed motocross can be a tough sport, and riders are even tougher. The first moto off the gate was the combined +30A and 14-24 classes. It was the “X” Kawasaki of Western Powersports Fly Racing rider Adam Wright who jumped to the front and was rolling. Wright took the win with Yamaha mounted Billy Fosnock a close second. In the second moto it was Fosnock out front with Wright running second at the end of the first lap. Wright made the pass as Fosnock went out of sight into the woods section. Unfortunately for Fosnock he caught his foot in a rut, breaking his lower leg, and taking him out of the moto and season. In 14-24, Kawasaki rider Zac Meyers took the early lead with Kawasaki rider Derick Bell second, Husky rider Zach Piper third, Eddie Kline fourth and Kyle Campbell fifth. With the riders charging around the track, Campbell was on the
move to pass Kline for forth, setting the results for the moto. In moto two Meyers returned to the front and wasn’t going to give up that spot, taking the moto and overall win. The action was behind him with Kline running second ahead of Piper, Bell and Campbell at the end of the first lap. Bell moved into second on the third lap, but then ran into trouble taking him out of the moto, handing second back to Kline. Piper again had a strong ride taking third for second overall. Wright and Fosnock also met in the Open A. Adam said “There were just two of us in +25 so we opted to ride the Open A.” In the first Open A moto the pack burned into the first turn with all the riders close. As they started working their way into place the Big St. Charles Kawasaki of Theodore Bubba Pauli showed why he makes the mains in nationals, jumping to the front. Kawasaki rider Scott Crowder was running second with Jordan Buchanan third and Ryan Hamilton fourth. Up Front Pauli kept charging in the lead but the rider on the move was Hamilton who moved into third on the second and passed Crowder for second on the third lap. Adam Wright on the fifth lap charged passed Buchanan and Crowder, into third. At the finish it was Pauli with the win, Hamilton second, and Wright third. In the second moto Pauli looked so smooth as he worked his way around the track, taking the moto and overall win. Wright was flat out rolling, running in second the whole race, giving him second overall as well. Hamilton finished
Bob McGee flying to the win in +30B/C
third as Crowder was fourth. Fifth overall went to Jordan Buchanan. One rider that made the trip south to race with his son was +30B/C rider Bob McGee. “I ride most of all to come and ride with my son, Ryder. But turns out I am the current 30B/C District 17 point’s leader… so I guess now I have to keep going.” In the first moto McGee showed why he’s the leader: He is fast and took the moto win. KTM rider Eran Salzmann finished second with Brian Kooistra third. In the second moto it was again McGee out front. Salzmann was cooking in second for the moto as Kooistra had his Honda across the line in third once again. Suzuki rider Chris Moore finished fourth for the moto and overall. So with Pops McGee showing him how to do it, how did Ryder McGee do? In the 50Jr McGee took his KTM to both moto wins and the overall. In 50 Shaft he ran into Hudson Wright, son of another fast dad, Adam Wright. The first moto saw McGee grab the start and take the win. Wright had his KTM on the gas for second, with KTM rider Caleb Coul-
ter third and Mason Kalmer fourth. In the second moto McGee ran another strong moto and took his fourth moto win of the day. Coulter was running second. (He’s the son of racer David Coulter who finished third overall in the Vintage class.) The younger Coulter kept it straight and took second for the moto, with Wright third for the moto and overall. Kalmer finished fourth for the moto and overall. One thing equal across the board for each of these little racers was a proud dad cheering them on. The 250B class provided some great racing action. In the first moto Yamaha rider Tyler Sanders was on it. Sanders laid down fast lap times and took the win, leading the field wire to wire. Kawasaki rider Kyle Campbell was running in second but on the last lap Klayton Fox made the pass and took the runner-up spot for the moto, leaving Campbell third. Kawasaki rider Jon Pearce finished fourth. In the second moto Campbell came out swinging and jumped to an early lead. Fox was hot on his heels, and passed him on the second lap. First moto winner Sanders was running third and on the third lap he also passed Campbell. Fox took the checkered for the moto and the overall, his first of the season! Sanders finished second for the moto and overall. Campbell was third for the moto and overall. Fourth went to Pearce in the moto and overall. Congrats Klayton, great ride.

Williams rips at Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - August 7 By Rolfe Otterness

ack Williams and Gage Fisher carved up the Spring Creek track at the latest round, number nine, of the 2016 SCMP Super Series. Williams snared wins in the 1424A and Open A classes as he took advantage of some down time in the pro national series. Fisher motored on for victories in all four motos of the 14-24B and 250B classes plus scored the overall in the Schoolboy 2 class with a 4-1 tally. They were among the most successful riders for the day, but with 477 entries there were many satisfied customers as the track shaped up into a real challenge. Other riders with major achievements for Zack Williams was on the gas as he won 14-24A and Open A! the day were Brandon Nelson, moto two with Williams once again in who ran off with wins in 65cc 7-11 and tow. Williams jumped out front on lap 65cc 10-11 plus Avery Long managed to two and began to build a lead. win 85cc 9-11 and 9-12. Chapiewski kept it under control this Clay Chapiewski came smoking off the time around and brought his bike in for line to lead early as the 14-24A class took second as Williams took the win. Maus to the track for moto one. Zack Williams and Becker ran 3-4 for most of the moto latched onto second with Philip Maus in with Loberg out due to bike problems, tow for third. Williams was keeping the opening it up for Marcus Winch to grab pressure on as they rounded the top of fifth. Collarbone hill, and launched off the Drew Slocum grabbed the holeshot as downhill jump to put on the pass for the lead. Chapiewski had some slight problems on the next lap and both Maus and Loberg got by, dropping him to fourth. Williams continued to build a gap over Maus who was under pressure from Loberg for the next few laps. Just before the white flag came out, Jake Loberg made the same move on the Collarbone downhill jump that Williams had used, blitzing past Maus to take over second. That set the finishing order at Williams, Loberg, Maus, Chapiewski and Chase Becker. Chapiewski grabbed the Jake Johnson (95) and Mitchell lead as the gate dropped for Bergstrom dueling in Open C. 60

the 250B class tore down the start straight to start their first moto. Slocum was out front for the first lap, but Gage Fisher was on the move and took command on lap two. From there Fisher started to pull away while Slocum had problems and dropped way back. Keegan Kleinwotterink then slotted into second with Bailey Kroone on his tail. That set the order for the top three with Fisher going on to win by about 14 seconds at the checkered. Kleinwotterink and Kroone weren’t too far apart with Jordan Frericks just a bit back for fourth while Kollin Lund scooped up fifth. When Tom K. dropped the gate on moto two, Kleinwotterink roosted to the front and led all through the first lap with Fisher and Kroone applying a lot of pressure. Fisher got by on lap two, leaving Kleinwotterink to deal with Kroone. Kleinwotterink managed to

hold off Kroone’s attack for the next couple laps, then pulled away just a bit to secure second when the checkered waved. Kroone maintained third over Frericks and Mickey Bender as the filled out the top five positions. The 65cc classes are very entertaining with good numbers of entries and the little buggers can jump like the pros. Braden Long grabbed the holeshot in moto one of the 65cc 7-11 class, but soon was displaced out front as Domenic Hegman took control. Brandon Nelson also got by before they completed lap one and the two out front were battling for the duration of the race. Hegman managed to hang on to take the win by two bike lengths after a tremendous moto long duel. Long held on for third with Isaac Therrien and Wyatt McGrath rounding out the top five. Long has mastered his start technique and once again led through turn one in the next moto. Hegman and Nelson were quickly by and had another fierce skirmish for the lead. Nelson made a move on the last lap to get out
front and took a win by a bike length at the flag. Long took a solid third with Therrien and McGrath repeating for fourth and fifth. Brandon Johnson and Nick Fox were dueling early in the first Open C moto but Fox managed to take over the lead on lap two and began to edge away a bit. Aaron Boatman worked his way by Justin Evans and closed on Johnson to make a challenge Tom Williams leads late in the moto but the field in +50B/C. came up a bit short and settled for third. Dan Dvorak and Evans ended up 4-5 when they crossed the line. Casey Paider put in a winning effort in the second moto after
Drew Sampson ran strong in 85cc 12-15 for second overall.

finishing a disappointing seventh in the first moto, taking the win over Fox. Boatman surged to third on his 125 smoker in an impressive ride with Johnson taking fourth and Trevor Bonnicksen holding fifth at the checkers.

uly 31st proved to be an average late July morning that would live up to its reputation, according to racing standards. I see a number plate rolling in, across the pits and knew to myself this could only be Andrew Hook. The number plate read 97L and the bike attached was a race ready 450cc tornado. I had to run up and welcome him. Anyone who has ever had the privilege of meeting the him knows, if your interested in the sport he loves, he will make time to talk. I asked what drives him to take time out of his personal and family life to race the races he does? His answer floored me, “I want to see families, I want to see families have fun. I believe when a person or family as a whole is out at the track, it is a place to learn crucial life les-
sons, to be polite, and work on using manners. So in turn, I guess this is my family, my track family.” Then there was a pause and he looked up at me and said “I hope and I pray these kids beat me someday!” Andrew Hook is a giver! Andrew gives advice, time, and knowledge at every D23 event, I have seen him at. Andrew received two 1st place wins this Sunday in the Open AA Pro and 450 Semi Pro classes. He is a true champion on and off the track! So, let me lay race day out for you at the St. Croix Speedway. The race consists of two tracks, the cycles run the ¼ mile oval and quads run what proves to be a high speed, yet technical TT track that managed to outwit some of the most skilled riders in the district. It never ceases to amaze those of us watching how everyone of these riders
find a way to “thread the needle.” One of these riders that manages to come out week after week and leave everything on the track is the 66 of Justin Berhow. Justin has figured out in his four-year racing career how to be a consistent presence and force to be reckoned with out on the track. After the race, I asked him what goes through his mind before each race? His answer was, “before each race I try and visualize the race before it happens, I run through the race in my head trying to go over any possibilities for places to pass because I never expect to lead a race start to finish. I try and picture myself coming into each corner, maintaining speed, and exiting as fast as I can. I try and picture what would happen if I come in high, low, fast, and slow. And look for the benefit of each of these positions and speeds and then attempt to execute on it in practice to see if it was the best way to run the corners, that’s why I solely concentrate on corners, anyone can drive fast on a straight, it’s the guy who can hold it on the edge in a corner that’s going to be fast.” Justin, finished second in the Open A class and fifth in the Open Pro class. Georgetown Fair Motocross Georgetown, Illinois - August 12 By James Pinckard
L
iving in the Midwest, we get to enjoy summer fairs and celebrations in many small towns. You’ll find carnival rides, funnel cakes, even fried pickles. But at the Georgetown Fair in Georgetown, IL you’ll find something no others offers - District 17 Motocross points! The Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club now has one race a year and it’s the fair event, a one of a kind in District 17 motocross. Being a fair race the track couldn’t be built until after the last event from the day before had ended, and it had to be torn down right after the race was over. D17 rider Eric Trigalet was on it. He started building the track at 10 pm Friday, working through the night to 3am, then up and back at it soon after to finish for Saturday night’s race. The result was a great track. The track was safe and fun for everyone, yet challenging enough that A-riders could put sections together making for a good show for the fans in the stands, some of whom only see motocross this one time a year. The first moto on the track for the rubber-band start was a combo of the +25, +30 and Vintage. +25 Suzuki rider John Gocken was the first rider around the new track, but he had company. On the

second lap Suzuki rider Matt Schambach made the pass for the lead and never looker back, taking the first checkered flag of the night. Gocken held on to second in the class with Honda rider Cory Nixon third. The rider on the move in the moto was +30B rider Travis Wait. He started the moto in third overall, kept chasing the +25 riders, and on the third
lap passed Gocken for second overall in the moto where he took the win in +30B ahead of Jason Gerling. After the moto I talked to Wait and he said “I haven’t been able to ride much. We just had a baby and it’s been great, but I’m now going to be able to do some more riding.” In Vintage it was Honda rider Thomas Savage finishing first with KTM rider Dana Chris250C riders off the line. tensen second. Off the start in the second moto for these three classes it was the Suzuki of Schambach out front with Gocken second and Wait again tagging along. These three put on a show and battled to the end with Schambach taking the win and +25 overall. Gocken finished second. Wait, with another strong ride, took the moto and overall win in +30B. Jason Gerling finished second in the class, after having the wildest ride of the night: In the middle of the track was a rhythm section that some riders were tripling… and some not. Well, Gerling went for the triple but came up short and the bike pitched

him off. While he was on the ground his bike kept going though. It crossed the first turn and wedged itself under the fence. He got up he looked around and couldn’t find his bike. He turned toward the crowd and there were about 100 people pointing and yelling in the direction of his bike. He ran over, got the bike, and finished the race to huge applause from the crowd. Gerling laughed and said “That was wild! I got up and there was no bike. I had no idea where it was but the crowd was yelling and pointing so I could find it. I hadn’t been doing that triple but some of the guys in the pits were telling me I should be doing it, so I went for it.” What a ride, and maybe a lesson in there about listening to the guys in the pits. The person with the best view was Savage who went on to win the second moto and overall in the Vintage class ahead of Christensen. After the race Christiansen said “This is fun. It’s been years since I have done anything like this.” While Eric Trigalet did the track building and work, there were two Trigalets that had a good fun night of racing. One was Women’s class rider Sydney. The class provided some great racing. In the
first moto Trigalet made dad proud and led the moto from start to finish as Honda rider Taylor Schultz put in a strong ride for second. The battle was for third between KTM rider Jaden Christensen and Rollanda Pinckard. After having an issue on the line Pinckard caught up to Christensen and you could have thrown a blanket over those two. They traded spots a couple times, in the end Christensen took third. In the second moto Trigalet was on it! She charged the track and took the moto and overall win. After the races she was on top of the world with a smile so big I would guess she still has it. I asked Eric what he thought and he said. “She did great and is having fun. She wants to ride and race and that’s what it’s all about. We’re leaving after the track is done and driving to another event so she can race because that’s what she wants to do.” Schultz also looked extremely happy after finishing second. The battle though was again between Pinckard and Christensen. Pinckard got the better start in the second moto but Christensen made a pass in the whoops. Pinckard didn’t give up and passed her back in the next section. These two passed each other every lap. At the end it was Christensen taking third after the great race. The 250A and B classes provided an amazing show for the fans. These riders were jumping whole sections and doing it at a pace that had fans on the edge of their seats. Yamaha rider Carter Gordon is new to the A class, but in the first moto it was clear he is going to make an impact. Gordon took off and held a pace no others could match, taking the win. Behind Gordon, Derrick Boyd was flying but the Honda of Matthew Bell was flying a little faster. Bell passed for second with two laps to go. Suzuki rider Matt Schambach was fourth. In the second moto excitement was an understatement. Bell launched to the front with his Honda. Gordon and Boyd were so close to him, they looked like the people waiting in line for funnel cakes. Bell attacked and charged the track making few mistakes. Gordon tried every way he could think of, even launched a jump section landing in the whoops. It
was impressive and for sure the crowd loved it. Gordon was on the rear wheel of Bell, then cut under him in the corner before the finish. Bell saw it coming though and squared him off, retaking the lead. Gordon made one bobble and that gave Bell enough room to take the moto and overall win. Boyd finished third. In the B class Trigalet was on the gas! He kept pace with the A class, taking both moto wins, and making it a very good night for the Trigalet racing family. Yamaha rider Rodney Sullivan finished second. What class do you think most people want to watch at a fair race? It’s Open C, because with its crazy mix of rider skills, anything can happen. Open C had lots of action, not crashing, but real racing action. In the first moto Yamaha rider Jacob Hall nailed the start and pulled out to a moto win. Kawasaki rider Kyle Burks finished second with Clay Patton third. In the second moto off the start it looked like it would be another battle between Burks and Hall, but on the first lap Hall fell and couldn’t finish. With Hall out, Burks was gettin’ it. Burks took the second moto win and overall ahead of Patton. Third place for the second moto went to KTM rider Richard Harrier. That finish gave Harrier the score he needed for third overall. The amazing thing about Harrier is that he is 71, and still racing a fair race! Fantastic. It shows there’s no need to simply stand and watch motocross, no need to just be saying “I could be out there.” Get out and ride!
