District 16 Annual Banquet The 2016 District 16 Banquet was among the best ever, and 2017 looks to be every bit as fantastic, or better. The re-worked evening schedule will return with some tweaking that will have two rooms for presenting awards after dinner. This allows everyone to come back together for all the fantastic drawings, a DJ and more. Best of all, it gives us a common area to celebrate the evening away after all the awards, dinner and activities. Drawings this year will again include “2” new motorcycles, “2” Yamaha generators, and a ton of other very cool items! A ticket order form is in this issue on page 45, but even more convenient, there’s one on line at amadistrict16.com. You surely don’t have to be an awards winner to attend this weekend of fun. The very low room rates at the resort are available to anyone using the AMA District 16 discount up to the cut-off date. The fun is open to all of our riding family, so be sure to come join us in November for this special night. Better yet, make it a weekend like so many others do! From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman I missed getting an article in last month as I was extremely busy getting things ready for the pro race. Putting on an event of that magnitude is a massive undertaking. Few people know all that goes into an event like this. All of the different parties that have to get set up, such as TV, track builders in this case Shane Schaeffer and company, the MX Sports crew that installs all the arches and repeaters - about 2 miles of them. Then there are all of the vendors, food and products. Fencing, layout of the camping spots and parking all need to coordinated. There is the issue of scheduling all of the personnel needed for security. Lighting, generators for enough electricity, extra track equipment in the form of lifts, dozers, excavator, it takes many months to get all these and many more factors in place and on schedule. I have a new appreciation for what it takes

to host a major event. The amount of work and number of hours that go into an event like this take the entire year to get coordinated and into place. Well worth it when you get to watch racers of that level perform on a track of that caliber. My dream is to get to each one of the National tracks at least once. So far I have only made it to Thunder Valley, Budds Creek, and Spring Creek. I have a long ways to go to reach that goal. Getting back to the business of our organization, things are moving along well. We will be looking at and voting on awards for the 2017 season. If you have any ideas or quotes for awards please get them to myself, or Leslie Vanderwerf. Each of the disciplines will be finalizing the details of their awards ceremonies. Watch the website and also your mailbox as award winners will receive a notice that they have earned an award. If you qualify and do not reply that you want your award(s) they will not be made. In motocross remember that the Featured Events pay points per moto so missing them could change your placing. They are worth a maximum of 50 points as opposed to the standard 25. AMA congress is a few weeks earlier this year we will be sending our 4 congress people the third week in September. We will keep you updated on any changes that will be taking place for the 2018 season. I haven’t seen a complete list of proposed rules changes as of this writing. Stay tuned. As always we will be holding our Annual Business meeting in early December. I encourage you to think about volunteering for one of our many board positions that are up for election each year. We have a great organization but we can always use new people and ideas. We have a long list of Class Representatives that needs to be filled and there are always some of those positions open. Send your name and any position you would like to myself, or Shannon, to get on the ballot. Dale Greenwald Legacy By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman

any of our current members may not have been fortunate enough to have met, worked, or raced with Dale Greenwald. Dale is the man who, along with his wife Louisa, started the conversation with the AMA to get ARMCA organized. It was 1969 when Dale and Louisa sat down at their kitchen table and started the basics of organizing our district. They had help along the way, mainly from Al and Gerry Mathwig and the Bilkes. In those early years, there was no motocross. The main types of competition were enduro, flat track and hillclimb, and Dale competed in all of those in his younger days. As he got older, he stuck to off-road events – he loved enduros. Back then, enduros were tough, long events − a test of “survival of the fittest” and Dale loved both the challenge and the competition! Dale was born May 3, 1939 in Jordan, MN and was a resident of Brooklyn Park, MN (although the hobby farm in Mora, MN was the place Dale “called” home) until his death on June 23, 2017. Dale married the love of his life Louisa in 1959, and they had two children, Debbie and Rex. Rex was one of those extremely lucky boys who grew up riding with his father – motorcycles in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter. They were more than father and son; they were friends and competitors as well. Dale was a founding member of the Norsemen Motorcycle Club in addition to his many other business and community affiliations. Dale was one of the most positive people I have ever met. On top of his upbeat attitude, he was a very caring person. As a leader of our district, he always thought about the organization first, not what was best for him. Dale was our representative at AMA Congress from the beginning of our district (he was a trouble shooter for the AMA with troubled districts) and he became Congressman Emeritus. Dale’s work led to D23 being politically active, with strong government relations work done by Tom and Karen Umpress, and our lobbyist Ray Bohn. This has ensured that we have been able to continue riding and racing on both public and private land. Another thing Dale always brought to any situation or gathering was a tremendous sense of humor. He remembered every joke he was ever told and he always shared them

with those around him. He was a man who cared deeply for people, not just those in his family, but also those in his extended family of motorcyclists. Since that 1969 meeting around the Greenwald’s kitchen table, the organization set in motion by Dale has been extremely successful in the motorcycling world, and our organization and the successes of our member racers are part of Dale Greenwald’s legacy. I will list but a few of the racers who are part of that legacy. I wish I could get to all of them, but time and records from past years don’t permit me to mention every one of our racers who have gone on to achieve success in the racing world.

In the off-road segment, racers of note include 1985 National Hare Scrambles Champion, and many time runner-up in the National Enduro Series John Martin. He was followed by racers on the national scene like Matt Stavish, Joe Zierman, and Nate Ferderer, and ISDE competitors Todd Mathwig, Steve Reschke and many others. In Hillclimb, we have several amateur and pro champions, most recently the Cipala brothers Luke and Logan who have set records on their way to winning Amateur National titles. In the pro ranks, we have

Nate Redman and Jay Salstrom with as many as eight titles between them. Flat track is another part of the legacy that was started by Dale. Many of our early members were flat track racers and some like Al Mathwig raced at the pro level. The newest discipline to join our district is motocross. As with the other disciplines, D23 racers have shined. Our first factory MXer was Tommy Benolkin; he was followed by many of racers who qualified and raced at the pro level. Donny Schmit went on to garner a West Coast Supercross title, and two world titles. He was followed by Heath Voss who won a World Supercross title. Then, of course, there is the “Prince of Belle Plaine" Ryan Dungey who with a combined nine titles and two ESPY awards being among his many accomlishments is the first motorcycle racer to be featured on a Wheaties Box. Jeremy Martin has captured two MX titles in the 250 class, while his brother Alex has been runner-up in the class. This is the short list of D23 pro MX racers who have had an impact on the national and world scene. None of this would have been possible without the efforts and foresight of Dale and Louisa Greenwald, and the handful of others. This may be the longest legacy list in motorcycle racing history. Dale’s efforts have paid big dividends to literally thousands of racers. I can’t imagine the last 50 years without having organized events to race and be a part of. I am sure Dale had no idea that his vision would turn into the organization it is today. Many people have helped build what we have, but it was the foresight and energy that was Dale that got the wheels rolling. It was under his tutelage in the early years that our solid foundation was formed. It was his guiding wisdom and business sense that kept us moving forward. There are no words to express the depth of gratitude we owe Dale. His contributions are immeasurable. He will be missed by all of us who got to meet, ride and work with him and if you didn’t, please remember his legacy, as he and a few others set in motion all that we have today in Minnesota in motorcycle competition. Look for a special event next season as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary; it will include a Dale Greenwald memorial event. God Speed Dale CYCLE USA, September 2017

Moline EnduroCross Rock Island County Fair’s feature entertainment brings AMA EnduroCross to the fans East Moline, Illinois - July 22 By Austin Wells, Photos by BriAnn Stocklen

n the past, the Rock Island County Fair has had motocross races in the form of the “Super Arenacross”, however it was put on hiatus for a few years. This year, the fair board contacted AMA’s Harv Whipple to see if he had any ideas for an exciting show for Saturday night at the fairgrounds in East Moline, IL. Combining his past in woods racing and his current ties with the AMA, Whipple came up with the Quad Cities’ first ever AMA-sanctioned endurocross. His biggest challenge: 4.5+ inches of rain on Friday night. Whipple and his crew of family members and friends, made the impossible happen in order to go racing Saturday evening. The track, in the front stretch of the Quad City Speedway, consisted of railroad ties, huge tractor tires, a very long pit of freshly mined rocks from the local quarry, logs, sand, jumps, and logs standing on end to create what they called the “Funky Forest”. Racing was great all night and put on a great show for the fans who lined the grandstands. They had fourteen different classes ranging from 50cc to Women to the $500-to-win Open Pro class. The 14-24 Amateur class saw JJ Beighle return to racing after missing much of the last couple seasons to take the win over Buddy Fortune and Tobin Miller. In the 14-24 Expert class, Cody Barnes reigned victor over Team SRT’s Austin Wells and Yamaha-rider Cody Bollinger. In the +25 Expert class, a battle ensued between local pro woods rider Bren 6

Earlier it was hard for me to get through the new sand section, but now I have a rhythm through it and just hooked up and got through it good every time. The track is super fun even for a C rider like myself. There’s spots you can just give ‘er and it’s all fun. Working hard in third, Rj Mackenzie put in faster laps all night trying to advance his skill set in the new class. Mackenzie after the race, “It’s hard being out here with the top Woodstock guys, but every weekend I’m pushing to get better and work up to their level before the winter and arenacross. It’s a lot of work but racing these type of tracks really helps. I’m getting a better feel for the whoops and it is shaping up well. Every lap I feel better and using better lines.”

Running with the A riders, the 250B class saw the always quick Kyle Schneider win both the heat and main. Kenosha, WI’s Jacob Lorenz let Blake Bauer get the best of him in the heat race, but came back when it mattered in the main to finish second. The 50cc classes were as enjoyable to watch as usual... with the younger 50Jr riders kicking it off. Ottawa, IL’s Connor Cooper led all the laps in the heat race, then continued the pattern out of turn one in the main. Once out front, the race was for second as Cooper rode really well to slowly gap everyone by the end of the moto. Mathew Tomaszewski held second early in the race before a slew of regulars worked past. By the third lap Lincoln Paxton was keeping Cooper honest. ity than us older riders. Everyone restarted except Riley Busse who walked off the track with some help from mom. Making it out of the start nicely was Nate Bierbom. He led Kain Jennison, Kallin Thomas and Owen Bills through the first half a lap as everyone else juggled for positions. Once out front Bierbom rode comfortably for the win as the top four held their positions. Heat race winner Preston Zollers had to work up after the messy start and eventually finished a solid fifth. Talan Zollers made quick work of the 85Jr class in both the heat and main events. Once out front he made it look easy, putting in quick laps all the way to impressive wins. Deegan Cooley rode well in second also... leading Connor Pilon. Benjamin Blazek ran in fourth all moto, never having a second of rest as Nathan Bills and Ethan Abraham were right on his rear fender in a three bike battle. On the last lap, Abraham snuck past Bills for fifth. The night’s racing ended on time as it always seems to... the program here at Woodstock is ran by a pretty sharp team. park with rapids in the river for kayaks and float tubes. Chris saw this park, which has the banks lined with rocks, and dreamed of having a Trials event there. This year his dream came true. In conjunction with a town celebration called the “Bacon and Hops Festival”, Chris hosted a trials event. While this event wasn’t on any club

schedule, word was spread through the Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota trials clubs about the event. Even though there are no trials clubs in Iowa, many of the trials riders that live in Iowa, like myself attended the event. Chris also had some interviews on the local radio station, resulting in a large turnout of spectators. This event was great for spectators with all sections visible with very little walking. This event was the closest to my home of any I have ever ridden in, only one hour away. I was surprised by the crowd cheering me as I rode through the sections, which I had never experienced before. The sections were very unique, with the many steps up and down the rocks placed on the banks. It was also unique watching the kayakers and float tubers going down the river just a few feet away while we competed. After the event Pat Smage, Phil Smage and Will Check demonstrated their skills in a blocked off street next to the food tent at the festival, even riding over a junk car placed there. Don’t be surprised if this event gets added to next year’s schedules. It was a hot and humid weekend in Arkansaw, Wisconsin but that didn't keep anyone from enjoying a few fun-filled days of racing with family and friends. This year's doubleheader at Arkansaw Cycle Park was one that you didn’t want to miss - from the tight battles on the track to the annual pig roast and fireworks show, Randy and Audrey Richardson definitely put on another successful end-of-July bash. Although it was a bit muddy earlier in the week from all the rain, the track turned out to be perfect for a weekend full of successful racing. Families from all around traveled to pull in mid to late week to get ready for a day of organized practice on Friday, the 28th. While everyone was excited to get some time on

the track, the big talk of the pits was all about the KTM demo bikes that were available to riders from 11-4 during practice day. Brought in by Xtreme Motorsports, two brand new 2018 orange machines sat beautifully under a tent just waiting to be tested. Anyone over 18 was able to choose between a shiny KTM 350SXF or a 150SX to take out for a spin on the freshly groomed track. With racing in full swing Saturday morning, the first class to hit the gate was 2 Stroke B/C, totalling eleven eager riders. Nick Jacobson, #828, was the first around the corner, taking the holeshot to start the day off. Close behind was Nick Randrup, who passed Jacobson in the whoops after a lap

Looking back, Jacobson said, “that class, I think is now one of the fastest classes we have to choose from, other than the A classes.” After observing the wide array of skill and technicality this group of riders brings to the table, his point is certainly agreeable. While the rest of the pack continued to battle, the second and third place riders had a duel of their own with Yamaha rider Haiden Waelchli finishing second and Dane Klinger taking third. Ry Baumann finished right behind Jacobson on his KTM bike to secure fifth place. After an intermission for track maintenance, 2 Stroke B/C headed out for a quick sight lap before lining back up at the gate for the second moto. According to Randrup, “the track was a little wet and it made it more of a struggle to get traction.” The moisture eventually worked its way in to make the soil perfectly tacky. Lance Torp managed to finish with a 2-2 overall while Grant Neubauer grabbed the third place spot in both motos. Stratford's very own Kyler Gollubske was in it for the battle for fourth place against Lane Rhyme. Gollubske stated, “The track is nice and smooth with good ruts.” Although Rhyme was fighting hard to hold Gollubske off until the end of the second moto, the conditions must have worked in Gollubske's favor as he came back strong and finished just ahead of Rhyme. Racing aside, the weekend at Arkansaw always provides everyone with great company, delicious food and fun entertainment. Both days of the weekend included raffle drawings for a variety prizes from some of the track’s sponsors, while a new pit bike was given away on Sunday to the lucky Brad Baumann, who was elated to take home his brand new ride. The pig roast went off 2 Stroke B/C riders off the line.

All Fun at Echo Valley Brookston, Minnesota - August 14 By Samantha Laderer

cho Valley’s Northern Points Series saw near perfect track conditions for the fifth and final round. Although the day was partially cloudy, it led to the track holding up very well with little to no watering needed. If you asked any of the riders, it was by far the best the track has been in a while and everyone was pleased with it. Of those who were impressed with the track was Gerald Krueger in the +50 and 60 classes. Krueger has been around motocross since the mid 70’s so it is safe to say he’s no stranger to the sport. In the early 80’s he hung up his boots and started a family. After the kids were out of the house, at the age of 49 he had come to a point where he was faced with a decision, what to do in his spare time. He chose to get another dirt bike and get back into racing. Krueger turned 64 on the 11th of August and is one of the eldest guys still out on the track today in Minnesota. How cool is that! In the first moto of +50, Craig Janzig pulled the holeshot and led the pack. Krueger struggled with the start but it didn’t take much to catch back up to the group on his ‘00 RM250. Craig Hultgren and Terry Seip were battling it out for the

second position. Hultgren was able to keep a tire ahead of Seip as Frank Barna watched in the fourth position. Janzig was able to pull away from the group and take the win. Hultgren claimed the second position with Seip in third. Krueger rounded out the top five. In the second moto Krueger got a better start and was third in the holeshot. In the second corner though he missed his shift allowing for Seip and Barna to get past. Time to play catch up again. By now the track was getting a little rough and Hultgren made a mistake while in second, allowing both Seip and Barna to get around. Janzig was able to pull away again and take the win. This time Seip finished in second with Barna third. Krueger went 5-5, still out there having fun. He has been racing with Hultgren for almost too many years to count, so to be out there still riding with his friends and having fun is all that matters to him. In other words, someone is very much enjoying their retirement to the fullest. On the other end of the spectrum, the kids were also out there

having fun in the 85cc 12-15 class. Matthew LaMourea shot of the gate and pulled the holeshot, taking an early lead. About midway through the first lap, Jacob Paige made a smooth pass on LaMourea. Paige had found some good lines and pulled away. Behind them the battle was on for third as Xander LaValley and Sawyer Niewind pushed each other to the limit. The two went back and forth for two laps until Niewind was able to get around for good. Cooper Lavigne rode in the fifth position and watched as the boys ahead of him battled. In the second moto, LaMourea got another great start. Just like the first moto Paige was able to get around to take the lead early in the race. LaValley and Niewind yet again were going hard for the third. This time it was a battle to the

end for the boys. Niewind pushed himself hard and made a pass with only a half a lap to go. The boys finished in the same order as first moto, with similar battles as Paige took the overall. As the boys pulled off the track, regardless of what place they got, under their helmets it was all smiles. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safe to say with all of those smiles, that it had been another great weekend of racing. So no matter your age, all that matters is being out there with your friends, having good rides and most of all fun. Teri, owner of the track, as well her daughter Amber and her husband Spencer would like to thank everyone for all of the support this summer as well as would like to invite everyone to round one of the 2018 Series kicking off in October.

he Nuclear Series got back underway at the end of August with the season winding down faster than one could blink. The year has really been flying especially with all the weather interrupting things in June. Today was another great day out at Motosports Park with the wonderful weather and the track holding up great all day. The overcast skies kept the track work to a minimum and everyone was out to focus on racing.

The biggest buzz of the day was the new layout for the track with everything running in reverse. Also, several sections were retooled and the finish line moving locations made for some great new jumps and lines for the riders to find out there. The track flowed really well in reverse and made a lot of new places where everyone was getting close... the racing was very entertaining. One of the many great races today was in 250C. Getting off the line for their first moto it was Jeremy Rybak out front around the first turn for the lead with

Steven Minkus and Matthew Speers right behind. Things switched up right away as they all hit the sand section when Tyler Pryor jumped into third, trying to hold off the pack. Everyone was gunning for the front and moving up the hill Speers put it back into third with at least four riders able to take it at any time. After a few laps Deven Fell got up behind Speers following a charge to the front. On the last lap Fell put it into third and made it stick. Rybak was still out front alone for the win with Minkus in second. The second moto ended the day with Luke Jackson up front for the win, Rybak in second and Minkus third. Lining up the points for the overall had Rybak in first ahead of Minkus and Speers (4-4). Jackson ended up in fourth after an unfortunate ninth in the first moto. Open A was a battle today for sure with many position changes. In the first moto Cody Vanbuskirk took the win with Johnny Six in second and Rj Mackenzie third. The second moto got underway later in the afternoon with Ty Tyrrell jumping out front followed by Vanbuskirk and Mackenzie. The pressure was already building as they got through the second turn and Six moved into third, passing Mackenzie setting the stage for a battle that lasted the whole race. Mackenzie got back into third just as Vanbuskirk made a move for the lead as Mackenzie followed him around Tyrrell. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t long till some bike problems plagued Tyrrell and he pulled off the track for an early end to the day. This moved Six back into third, chasing MacKenzie. Vanbuskirk took the win leaving second to Mackenzie and Six rounding out the podium for third after two great motos.

mas Family Motorsports kicked off their second AMA weekend with their much looked forward to doubleheader. As far as U.P. weather goes, you couldn’t have asked for a more perfect weekend. There was just the right amount of rain early in the week to leave the track in great condition for two days of racing. The track set up nicely and if you asked anybody about its condition for the weekend, there’s a good chance they’d tell you about the ruts. Deep ruts, almost like that of a national track formed in the black dirt and from Ziolkowski and Kyle Hameister what I could hear all weekend, Dylan celebrate a hard-fought Open A moto. riders loved them. Randrup and the battle for fifth heated up between Maki and Blaise Morrison. At the checkers it was Morrison running fifth. The second moto started with Edwards out front with Baumann and Morrison behind. Hass was able to move himself into third by the end of the first lap and the top three ran consistent for the reminder of the moto. Randrup got around Morrison in the woods section, and was sitting comfortably in fourth. Rounding out the top 5 was Combs with who went 3-7. The 85 Open class put on a good show both days and had some of the most exciting battles to watch. Moto one Ranger Flinchum led the pack with Cale Huotari, Drake Morrison and Drake Dionne putting on a close battle over second place. Morrison hit a bump and went flying over the bars causing him to slip pack to sixth. Dionne and Cooper Burkman then put the pressure on Huotari all swapping spots until Cole Torp made his way into the group in the final lap, taking over the third position. In the end, Dionne was able to maintain second and Huotari and Burkman completed the top five. In moto two, Morrison was able to redeem himself and settled into second place as the battle between Dionne, Burkman, and Torp started again. Torp was able to make it around Burkman on lap two and they ran closely together for the remainder of the race. Behind them the remainder of the field ran within bike lengths of each other swapping spots each lap. Morrison’s second place run ended up giving him 8-2 for fourth overall as Flinchum grabbed the overall win. After a Saturday night filled with camp fires and for some, swimming in Lake Superior,

Sunday’s racing was just as action packed as the day before. Moto one of 250C started with an act of kindness. As the bikes fired up, Nathan Barnhart’s remained quiet. Just as they were about to let the gate go without him, Johnny Vandezande happened to be in staging and offered up his Kawasaki 250 for Nathan to go out and make his race. Cheers and clapping surrounded the starting line as the 30 second board went up and you could see Barnhart’s smile from across the track. Vince Hughes put his Yamaha out front leading half the race until Ry Baumann was able to make the pass. Tristan Alloway worked his way up to third from a mid-pack start. As the leaders pulled away, Tristin Woolf, Carson Gerroll, and Noah Smet banged bars over fourth place eventually ending with Woolf in Ry Baumann won 250C Saturday & Sunday fourth and Gerroll fifth. fter taking a year off to let the trails get some much-needed rest the Paul Bunyan Forest Riders got back to work prepping for their much-anticipated return in 2017. Although the trails were still open over the course of the year for trail riding, the club still had a lot of clearing downfall and grooming work to do before the enduro. The Stomping Grounds located in the heart of the Paul Bunyan State Forest takes considerable pride in being the host with an expanded campground for this year’s campers and as always, the lodge had its usual great food, drinks and entertainment for riders to enjoy the night before the race. Saturday kicked off the festivities with the youth taking on the rejuvenated trails. Unfortunately, the youth enduro participants have been low this year compared to the Hare Scrambles. Not sure if the Saturday events are the cause or what. It would be nice if someone could shed some light on this so it can be discussed and adjusted. For those that did make the event they sure put on a great show. Micro riders Austin Holasek and Sydney Goodman had a battle of the ages as they ripped through the forest pushing the limits of their 50cc bikes leaving Holasek with the win after 14 checks, by 7 seconds. Lucas Stageberg had a good run going but just didn’t have the pace of the top two. With more seat time, he’ll be right there battling for the win. Premier riders Lucas McCoy and Logan Carlile gave the crowd and their parents a nail-biting, heart pounding, sitting on the edge of your seat race as McCoy edged out Carlile by a mere two seconds. Today marked McCoy’s first win on the year and he was super pumped about it, as was Mom and Dad. Wyatt Simonsen took the 250C class by storm. Entering in only his second off-road event, Simonsen took top honors. While running times that would put him up with the A/B riders Simonsen also won the overall C class over Owen Farmer, entering his first enduro of the

year. Farmer though has been showing some dominance this year in the hare scramble series. While placing second overall Farmer brought home the gold or maybe it was just a plaque, but either way it was a golden win in 200C. Jonathan

Newstrom rounded out the top three overall and was also a class winner, taking three out of the four checks over Travis Deweese in Vet C. Brady Kittock finally got that elusive first win on the year. After playing run-

ner up the first two races Kittock wasn’t on fire right out of the gate. After the first check, he was running in fourth overall B but wasn’t too far behind on time. Inching his way up he finally grabbed the top spot on check six when Jayme French had some issues. French rebounded on the next check but Kittock found another three gears as he laid down a time faster than the A riders on the final check giving him to the overall win and first in 200B. French rounded out the day in second in both class and overall with Noah Squires taking third in class and sixth overall. Devon Forsberg stuck to his winning ways in Open B, keeping his undefeated season alive. It wasn’t easy for Forsberg as he and Tanner Lokken swapped section wins at each check. In the end, it was Forsberg that minimized time lost in each section giving him the win and a third overall. Peter Nickel proved his Overall win at Huntersville was no fluke. The Yamaha mounted rider has had terrible luck this year in the Hare Scramble series but is on fire showing no mercy in the enduros. Steve Moilanen came over from North Dakota to put a stop to Nickel’s dominance but came up short like everyone else in the Open A class. A valiant effort on his part and a good showing being his first time on the Akeley course. Jake Hinkemeyer had a solid day winning the Vet A class and placing third Overall A. It’s with great pride that I finally get to say that Chad Tupper has broken the curse of being that runner up guy. As much fun as it is giving him grief, Tupper’s perseverance has awarded him with that ever-elusive +40A win. Next time you see Tupper make sure to congratulate him. You’ll recognize him by his big smile and still carrying his first-place trophy where ever he goes. Nice job Chad. By far the biggest class of the day goes to the Super Senior A class. These guys are all 50+ years old, are still competing and having more fun than most kids. Although for a couple days after the race they may be feeling the effects of the pounding they take from the race they still have the passion to get out and enjoy the sport they love so much. llinois’ first ever Sprint Enduro has come to Byron’s Motosports Park! Ryan Moss and his club, the Forest City Riders, put together a great event a the park. Dubbed the Nuclear Sprint Enduro, after the close by nuclear power plant, this event paid District 16 and 17 enduros points.

Two separate special tests were set up - both about four miles long. One test, all timber, was tight, technical and slow. Rain earlier in the week made things a little slick for the first lap but everything tacked up great. The second special test included most of the motocross track, a little bit of woods, and corner track and was much faster than the other loop. With the new format, everyone had to

start on their specific ‘minute’ on the woods loop with a key time of 10:30. After that first loop, riders were able to ride whichever test they wanted to, whenever they wanted to, up until 3pm. This created a very relaxed, but fun environment. Riders were able to ride hard for a four mile loop, then take a break, chat with buddies, eat lunch, or go right back out and knock another test out. Four laps on each of the two tests were required. After all eight tests were complete, times were added together to get scores and the fastest rider won. Fastest rider of the day: Cody Barnes. Barnes had everyone covered by over three minutes. Second in the AA class was Wisconsin’s Mason Amerling, followed by Countryside KTM’s Blake Ryan. Open A saw Tanner Whipple take the class win over Jarred Hall and TJ Nees. Buddy Fortune won the B class over Jhadyn Walker and Andrew Ballard. In +30A, John Griffiths walked away with the win over Jeremy Walker and Shane Harmon. The +50A class was topped by Erik Shafer. Jay Hall and Shawn VanAlsburg rounded out the podium. On Sunday, the Greg Moss Memorial Hare Scramble brought in 217 entries from Wisconsin and Illinois. The morning mini race was overalled by Buddy Fortune out of the Supermini class. Second in Supermini was Trevor Keogh ahead of Travis Boyer. In the 85cc class, Easton Morgan took the victory over Lake Plowman and Jhak Walker. Regan Doerr won the 65cc win over Levi Fortune and Jaden Hamilton. Allie Roland took the win in the Women’s class over Morgan Wheelwright and Wisconsin’s Autumn Czappa. Great Azzie season continues Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 13 By Morgan Strauss

hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing better than a beautiful summer day spent out at the track watching some motocross! The August round at Aztalan Cycle Club brought perfect weather and a good turnout in all the classes. After a special day of open practice on Saturday, riders were ready to go by Sunday morning! As 2-Stroke B/C hit the track, Brock Noreen was on the throttle for the holeshot. However, as they neared the back sand section, Jacob Oldenburg, Eddie Norred and Tyler Gamble had already found their way into the top three Nathan Oldenburg charging in the 2 Stoke B/C class.

positions. By the start of the second lap, Norred found the opportunity to make the pass for first, which he was able to hold onto until the checkers. Meanwhile, Noreen and Austen Madison battled shortly behind the top three guys for fourth. The two fought back and forth, but Noreen was able to hold off the position until end. It was a repeat in the second moto when Oldenburg and Norred showed up with the same mind set â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not giving up the battle for first. Oldenburg held Norred off until the third lap when Norred finally found the right line to make his way around. Gamble held onto a solid third followed by Noreen and

Madison and they finished that way. As thirty riders hit the track for +30B/C, Jim Beckman made it around the first corner for the holeshot. By the time they hit the plateau, Beckman had fallen back to third with Nathan Oldenburg and Nate White holding the top two spots. White began to put the pressure on Oldenburg as Joshua Pakenham was able to make the pass around Brad Yde for fourth. After moving into fourth, Pakenham started to close the gap on Beckman for third. With one lap left, White found his chance to take over first and Pakenham moved into third. In the second moto Beckman once again stole the

holeshot, with Oldenburg and White right at his rear fender. By the back section, Oldenburg had taken over first, now followed by White, Beckman and Miles Saigh. For the rest of the race, Oldenburg wasn’t letting off the throttle and held onto the lead until the end. By mid moto, Pakenham once again made his way around Beckman for third. Oldenburg (2/1) took the overall, leaving White (1/2) to take second. 250C was another great race to watch for the day - with twenty-eight riders. As the gate dropped, Cole Godfrey pulled the holeshot followed by Austin Beilke, Kollin Kadinger and Braden Warner. In the second lap, Godfrey stumbled, falling back into third, allowing Kadinger and Warner to slip into the top two positions. Warner made his move into first by the start jump in the third lap. Godfrey and Kadinger continued their close battle for the rest of the race, with Kadinger able to hold the spot till the checkers. In the second moto Blower held the lead for a short time until Warner made his way into the position. By the second lap, Warner already started to put some time on the rest of the group. Kadinger, Blower, Jake Robinson and Sean Badker

held out the remaining positions. Warner with a perfect 1/1 day took the overall. Warner on the day, “In the first moto I worked my way up to third by the end of the first lap. I got into second behind Cole Godfrey and we battled for a while, then he went down on the third lap and I went on to win the moto. It was good, fun racing! When second motos came I knew I had to get a second or better to guarantee the overall. I got into second by the second lap, then passed for first and went on to win the moto. It was a good day at Aztalan and the track crew did an amazing job – track was top notch! As the gate dropped for moto one in 250A, Justin Wolf rushed around the first corner for the holeshot. As the group flew over the plateau, Wolf continued his lead followed by Taylor Strauss. Josh Philbrick started to close in on Strauss, eventually stealing the position near the back sand section. Shortly behind Strauss, Dale Kathan and Mason Persha kept close tabs on each other. After putting in some good lap times, Philbrick started to move closer and closer to the first place spot. Soon Philbrick found the right line to move around Wolf for first. Before the checkers, Persha also managed to move around Kathan for fourth. When the group hit the track for the second moto, Philbrick was ready for the holeshot with the rest of the riders right at his tail. Philbrick and Wolf battled for the remainder of the race; however,

he first weekend of August brought the second annual joint Trials event at Jeff Franklin’s place in Oregon, Illinois. This is a shared event for the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association (WOTA) and the

Northern Illinois Trials Riders Organization (NITRO). Jeff and many of his trials friends had worked on and off for many weeks getting the setup for the event completed and were almost done when one night less than 3 weeks before the event the skies opened up, dropping a torrential rain on the property. Jeff’s rain gauge went to 7.5 inches before overflowing. The damage and erosion was more than anyone could imagine. Twenty plus trees fell when the water washed the soil away from their roots on the hillsides. The next weekend a group of volunteer riders ascended on the property with chain saws and worked relentlessly to clear the loop and rework the sections. Some of the fallen trees became new obstacles for the riders. By the time the event came the loop was clear and 24 sections were ready.

There were twelve sections for each day with every competitor riding eight of them for their class on each of their four loops. On the weekend of the event Jeff’s spacious yard was filled with campers, tents, trucks, and trailers from the large turnout. The event felt like a festival with all the activity. The center area of the yard that was roped off to protect the septic system was used for preyouth sections, badminton and croquet games. Saturday evening after the event there was even a show put on by National Champion trials rider Pat Smage. He used the most extreme rock ledges and some of the very large fallen trees to demonstrate his abilities. He even was able to do a back flip out of one of the ditches. The highlight of the show was when he had WOTA president Shari Huber and NITRO president Ralph Littlefield lie down on the driveway. He did various maneuvers where he bounced and flipped his bike back and forth over them. It looked scary, but both presidents had great trust in Pat’s abilities. It will be hard to top this event next year, but I know Jeff will try very hard. Great show at Oshkosh Oshkosh, Wisconsin - August 12 By Bambi Yogerst

airyland Amateur event at Oshkosh Speedzone hosted seventeen classes drawing 175 entries to participate in a super night of racing. Weather was perfect, yay Mother Nature!! As instructed in the riders meeting, ‘if you don’t want a wide groove, just follow each other around the track, if not, spread out in practice and make it wider!’ And that is what the riders did! Quoted from Bert Sumner, “there was great multi-line racing all night long!” That was agreed upon by many! Second heat winner, Dan Vrana #88 (TRI), was first off the line in the Vets class main event. By turn three Jim Kirschbaum took the lead on his #99 KTM. After leading two laps Vrana was right at his back wheel to then take the lead back. Not willing to go down without a challenge, Kirschbaum came right back to retake the lead, only to have Vrana charge ahead once again! If that wasn’t action enough, here comes Kyle Weise #29K on his Honda at the half way point of the race, taking over second and moving up on Vrana. Weise was able to get alongside Vrana, but unable to complete a pass despite all the efforts. Kirschbaum was still struggling when Kyle Meiers got around to take third. Vrana held his lead to the checker flag, finishing off an awesome race! Three heats and a semi set the stage for the 505cc class main event. Michael Van Langen on his #51 Honda got the holeshot, challenged right away by Kyle Weise. Van Langen maintained his lead as Jake Walters, Cody Funk and Brady Lange began a heck of a battle over third that included some friendly bumping. Weise kicked it up a bit to get around Van Langen for the lead while the third place contenders were three wide heading for turn three, taking advantage of that wide groove! Funk got ahead of everyone to charge up on Van Langen, and the take over second place and set the final order out front as Weise grabbed the win. 80’s Singles main event again had 40

Michael Van Langen as a big contender, this time on his Rotax, getting the holeshot in front of Jordon Houpt and Danny Murre. Before concluding the first lap, Houpt passed Van Langen. It didn’t last long though as Van Langen moved back into the lead a lap later. Murre then made a move on Houpt for second, moving up on Van Langen for a shot at the lead as well. Houpt stays with them to keep the battle going through the mid point of the race, then on lap five Houpt took over out front bringing Murre with him. Van Langen never let off as

they finished that way, all three still very close. What an exciting race! The whole night was filled with terrific action!
