Alec Muth, a friend to many of us lost way too early in life It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alec Muth (22), who was involved in an on-track incident during the American Flat Track event at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D. on Tuesday, August 7. Muth succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, August 16. Muth was an up-andcoming rider from Black River Falls, Wis. He will be deeply missed by peers and fans alike. “Alec was a popular guy in the paddock and had a lot of friends in the flat track community,” said Michael Lock, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. “It is extremely sad that his journey through life has been cut so short and our thoughts are with his family at this time.” “Alec was a hero both on and off the race track,” said Charlie Roberts, Class
of ’79, a 501(3)c charity supporting injured riders and their families. “Alec was a fierce competitor, a firefighter, a friend to many and a great son from a loving family. Having made the selfless decision to be an organ donor, his legacy will continue as he gives the gift of life to those in need.” The Class of ’79 has established a Memorial Fund for Alec Muth, with all donations going directly to Alec’s family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at www.amaft79.com or by check for Alec Muth Memorial Fund, payable to the Class of ’79 at 3989 Springer Lane, Springfield, IL. 62711.

Trollhaugen Hare Scramble Another great Norseman Motorcycle Club event in the books Dresser, Wisconsin - July 15 By Paul Otto
T
he trolls were out in full force prepping the course for yet another year of troll-ish-ous trails for D-23 off-road riders to enjoy. Over 300 entries were on hand to see what the Norseman Motorcycle Club had in store for them. Riders were met with rolling hills spread out intertwining the variety of woods with a mixture of deep sand, clay and black dirt. Conditions were near perfect in the woods as the dirt still had moisture making it tacky for great traction. The future superstars took to the course setting the stage for the day, Troy Horbaty was on another level in the Premier class clipping off several minutes a lap quicker. Copper Anderson, Travis Illies and Tate Tromblay had a good battle, within seconds of each other playing follow the leader until the last lap when Illies finally snuck by Anderson for second.
Pee Wee beginning their battle, #381 Eric Niedzielski and #1778 Zachary Brown up front.
Our Peewee class didn’t give the crowd much excitement to cheer about. Not that PeeWee class rider Ruslan Johnson

it wasn’t a good race, but everyone jumped out into a position and stayed there till the end. Stone Petta put down the fastest lap time earning himself the win on the day leaving Thomas Hanson and Eric Niedzielski 2-3. Charlie Anderson pulled the first lap lead in the macro class but had some issues putting him back to seventh on lap two. Liam Brown grabbed control of the race with a slight hiccup on lap four giving Sydney Goodman the lead but only for a lap. Brown regained the lead and controlled the rest of the race. Goodman kept him honest in second while Austin Holasek had a bad start but kept his composure and battled his way up to third. Carter Niedzielski grabbed the Micro class lead, but Tatum Swygman didn’t make life easy as he stocked him all race and even passed him midway through the race. Not letting the pressure get CYCLE USA, September 2018

to him, Niedzielski regained his composure and took back the lead for the win. Landen MaClaughlin had a solo race back in third where he finished. As the C class lined up to do battle a friendly reminder that Yes, this is a race, but we must remember that if someone catches you hoots, hollers or revs their engine and is obviously faster to kindly move over. A friendly thanks will ensue, and you’ll feel good about your sportsmanship and continue with your race. Otherwise, karma will surface and you’ll find yourself tucked in the weeds with a not so friendly get out of the way next time. It is your choice so chose wisely. Troy Horbaty must have used the Premier race as a warm up. Starting in the back of the C race in Juniors, Horbaty sliced his way through the field like a hot knife through butter. Not sure if it’s ever been done before but definitely not this year, as Horbaty took the overall C class Overall winner Nick Swenson

win. Very impressive ride for someone so young riding a small-bore bike. Jacob Stephens took home the win in the Open C class and was runner up for the overall. Heath Foeller and Derek Hendrickson were rewarded with a second and third for their efforts on the day in Open C. Jason Ryan led the way on lap one before succumbing to Horbaty and Stephas, but still took home the win in 250C. For the third straight race Luther Crum took the win in the 200C class. Miranda Tweeton got caught up in traffic on lap one. Once she got a clear course Tweeton matched Crum on lap times but couldn’t make up the difference from the first lap, settling for second followed by Aundrea Artmann. Moving on to the B class where they compete for “approximately” two hours we had a first time overall winner.
Richard Robinson had that break through race where everything went his way claiming the Vet and overall wins. Looking back at 2017 Robinson also won his first overall in the C class at this very race. I’m guessing that Trollhaugen is his favorite track at this point. Vet class seemed to be the fast class on the day as five of the top ten overall came out of this class. John Liebl and Oeslen Costa shared the podium for second and third. Tristan McDonald made his first presence on the year. The 250B rider had a good showing and lead all B class riders around on the first lap before succumbing to the eventual overall winner Robinson. McDonald did take second overall B and won the 250B class by quite a margin. Kyle Magnuson found

Robert Lane Iv continued his winning streak in the 250A class. Lane kept Kevin Burns and Josh Brixen at bay during the two hour and twenty two minute race. Our final first-time winner is none other than Nick Swenson. Swenson has been MIA for the last few years, at least on the D23 scene but has been chasing the National Enduro series. With an off weekend for the Nationals Swenson dusted off his D23 card and headed to the race. With a good start and smooth steady laps with no pressing issues he lead from wire to wire giving him his first AA and Overall Hare Scramble win of his career. Congrats to Chaz Herzog and Devin Jirik on their best finishes on the year with a second and third AA and overall. Fast Racing Action at XMas
Sunday’s 65cc class consisted of thirteen riders, one of the largest of the weekend.
Christmas, Michigan - August 4-5 By Jeri Nyberg
Y
ou never know what you’re going to get on a summer day along Lake Superior, and Xmas Family Motorsports Park’s August AMA double header got a taste of what those summer days are all about. Going to Xmas on the Thursday night before the race weekend you could tell it was going to be busy as the pits were already starting to fill with campers. By mid-day Friday the track was buzzing with action as people were rolling through the gates to get some seat time in at the practice session. The ever changing scenery at Xmas continued this weekend with the addition of a new split corner section and a tight sturn before the step up. The new sections really added some great passing opportunities. Saturday morning started out with sun and before anyone could see it coming, the skies opened up and huge rain drops started to fall in the middle of practice bringing the day to a temporary halt. Once the soupy mess of water and mud were removed from the track, the sun came back out and racing was finally able to get under way. After first few classes helped put some lines down, +25B/C rolled into the starting gate ready 10

At the checkers Warren took the St.Amour, Nick Hess, and Joshua Tammi win. Kubowski was able to pass Hess came out in the top three spots. Then and finished fifth overall with 8-4 motos. Cody Warren quickly made his way to One of the most action packed races of the front of the pack as Hess was able to the day came from the 85Jr riders. Ezra pass on St.Amour around the sweeping Beach and Ethan Ebben were right in the sand corner before reaching the first mix. Beach pulled past Ebben up the hill green flag. Through the second and third after the start, then set his sights on Miller laps Ziebert was able to get by Hess and and the two swapped spots up the step up, Michael West was able to make a pass as through the woods, and then back down well, moving Hess back to fourth. Durthe step down. Miller hung on to the lead ing the fourth lap West was able to drag as they finished the first lap. Lance Torp race Ziebert through the uphill and take caught up to Ebben and the two were over second place. Warren went on to win the moto as Hess kept fourth place at the checkers. Rounding out the top five was Chris Morrison. After chatting with a few of the riders while they washed the thick mud off of their bikes, they said the muddy conditions definitely wore them out a little faster, but it was a great race! The key to moto two in all classes would be the perfect start, as the rain delay drew a vote to cut laps for the afternoon. The gate dropped for moto two, and it was the Kawasaki of Ziebert out front with Warren and Logan Poupore hot on his heels. Poupore went down near the spectator table top giving second place to Warren and moving West up to third. A quarter of the way through the second lap, Warren took the outside line of the new split section and was able to take the lead. West still ran in third as the battle for fourth was heating up between Hess and Nicholas Kubowski. Gavin Sargent finished 5th overall in 250C both days.
starting to put on the charge towards Miller and caught him in the tight s-turn section. Beach who had fallen back to sixth closed in on fourth and fifth places riders Paytyn Dosch and Ryder Johnson and was able to jump past them on the double. Ebben caught Miller and swept the outside corner of the split section to take over the lead. Miller and Torp ran a close race during lap four before Torp made his pass into second place. Moto two was a two lap shootout for these riders, as they were flying around the track. Added to the mix this time was Deegan Vanvreede who had made the trek from Loretta Lynn’s to make this D16 race. He pulled the holeshot over Ebben and Torp. Vanvreede pulled away to win the moto as Ebben ran a solid second place. Coming to the checkers, Beach put in a last big push to try to make his way into third past Torp, but wouldn’t be able to pull it off at the line. Miller came in fifth right on Johnsons, giving him 3-5 finishes for fourth overall . Even with the day ending a little later on Saturday, that didn’t stop people from heading to the sandy beaches of Lake Superior to cool off. Races and their families were treated to another high quality fireworks show before bed as well. Sunday morning the sun greeted riders and the day was able to get underway without any rain. As the Vet A riders lined the gate, you could tell it was going to be one of the best races of the day. Grabbing the CYCLE USA, September 2018

holeshot was Travis Grendzinski, but Andrew Zambon wasted no time putting his Kawasaki out front. Broc Stroebel moved up from seventh, then set his sights on Grendzinski in second place and was finally able to overtake him once making it through the third woods section. Many of the racers were running in tight groups of two or three each battling and pushing each other for position. Josh Brehm made his way around Brad Johnson, and then caught and passed Grendzinski. Also cracking the top five on lap four was Ben Bernard who passed Johnson. In moto two Grendzinski found himself out front early and like the first moto, Zambon was able to take over the number one position quickly. Stroebel found himself down just after the start leaving him in the twelfth spot. Eric Uren made the push on lap two and charged past Andrew Hazen on the spectator table top. As the top five began to separate themselves from the rest of the riders, the closest battle on the track was actually over sixth position between Keith Degrand and Hazen. They swapped positions until Degrand was able to pass and hang onto sixth place for the remainder of the moto. On the final lap Brehm was able to pass Gradzinski to secure third place. Once again the hard work and dedication of the Xmas crew was on full display as they made sure the track was race ready for the riders, families, and spectators. The ongoing improvements of this facility and enjoyment that could be seen from the riders assure that the 2017 District 16 Fan Favorite Track still has a lot up its sleeve. Byron Illinois - August 5 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com
T
he Nuclear Series got back underway at the beginning of August with the season winding down faster than one could blink. The year has really flown by with Motosports Park having a lot of trouble dodging Mother Nature early on. Today was another great day out here with the weather being wonderful and the track holding up great all day. With the sun out and the temperatures high, it kept the track workers on their toes today - and they handled it very well. The races today were as intense as ever with a lot of good motos to watch. Heading out for their first moto was +30B/C to put on a good show. Off the line it was a battle for the lead with Eran Salzmann jumping out front followed by Cory Lingle, Jeremy Barone and all the others keeping it pinned through the turn around the tower. They were heading into the sweeper as Barone slid into second ahead of Lingle. Then, around the back of the track Lingle made the push all the way up to the front. Shaking things up as well was Matthew Slager, hitting it hard to make it into second. This left Salzmann in third and holding off the pack after things changed so quickly. Slager was on the gas, getting into the lead with Lingle now holding off Brandon Hastings who moved into third,
but Salzmann wasn’t to be counted out keeping right on him through the sand rollers down the hill. After an exciting
outing the checkered flag was out giving Slager the win, Lingle keeping second and Salzmann back into third.
Cory Lovess finished eighth in Open C CYCLE USA, September 2018

In the second moto Slager returned to win once again, this time with Salzmann in second place moving up to second overall as Lingle finished third. 250C was next up with a large gate out there, ready to give it their all. The first moto got underway with Steven Minkus grabbing the holeshot followed by Jake Luchini and Daniel Mormino. Heading into the sweeper Andrew Voegtle turned up the heat, moving into third. As everyone spread out Minkus was holding down the lead with Luchini close and now James Waldron had moved into third where the battle was really going on. As they came around for the third lap, things had shifted once again. Minkus was starting to pull a gap as Luchini tipped it over in the corner and Jeremy Rybak worked himself up to second, ahead of Voegtle. After some great racing they came across the line in the same order. In the second moto things shook up with Rybak having a much better start and tak-
ing the win plus the overall, that left Minkus in second and Voegtle third to round out the podium for the day. The great racing wasn’t close to over as Schoolboy 1 was in staging for their second moto. In the first moto it was Hunter Billingsley taking the win followed by Mitchell Malaney and Kevin Huddleston. The gates dropped on the second moto with three wide coming in the first turn. Edging out front around the tower was Spencer Whitney with Huddleston and Billingsley right behind him as the chase got underway. Running down the hill to the sweeper Billingsley didn’t waste any time holding it wide open and charging hard through the next few sections. It wasn’t long before Billingsley had taken over the lead with Huddleston in second as Malaney took over third after getting pinched off on the start. The top three were close the entire race as they went back and forth several times only to get right back where they started. It came

down to the final lap giving Malaney an opportunity to take over second and make it stick. Crossing the line it was Billingsley taking the win and the overall, Malaney in for second and Huddleston holding on for third. It was another great day of action at Motosports Park. More will be in store for with a couple events still on the table once the Nuke series comes to an end, the awards play day, and the always exciting Halloween race just to name a few. Fox Valley Double Header frey and Thompson swapped motos. Holda powered his green machine to a win and this whole group that came were ecstatic about the competition and fun the day provided. +40B/C - for the "almost" old people was the largest class of the day. Hot on it's heals was +50B/C. Between the two older people classes there were 28 riders. Interesting how these guys see the process of 20+ minute motos, 10am starts and heading home at 3pm with a solid hour of racing in just one class. Secret looks to be getting out by the looks of it. Noteable mention in this class was Frank Henry Smith’s first race earned him a fifth place finish in 50Jr. Rowley, after a very long Wedron, Illinois - July 28/29 time off the bike he shows up to race, Photos by Nick Smith 11th overall doesn't seem news worthy
but the smile and fun made it so. +50B/C has been Jeff Oldenburg’s play ground as of late. But today Dan Kickbusch and Tim Halsmer made him earn it. Oldenburg had a rare first moto finishing third but the two moto format of Gp racing gets you a second chance. He came back with a solid win and Kickbusch couldn't get around Halsmer to secure the win and had to settle for third. Brody Brewer in the 65cc class this year is his first season trying some woods racing and like his typical style and speed he has excelled. He won the class with Jakee Hasten going 2-2 for second while Cooper Duff came from southern IL to grab third. Notable mentions; Garrett Ward won the Open class but bike problems dropped him to fourth in the A class. Blake Ryan who is one of the strongest GP racers at the moment took the A class win. Joe Voegtle has been putting in solid rides in both classes making the classes very competitive. Day 2 saw many camping over and staying for the Hare Scrambles event. ou get two types of weather in July, hot and hotter. Riders still braved the conditions and did an excellent job of competition through out this final weekend of July. Kicking off the weekend on Saturday morning was a group of GP racers ready to see what kind of layout would be happening this day. Some how this type of racing has been billed as MX vs Woods riders. The fact is that there are all types racing Gran Prix's and more and more riders are defining themselves as "GP riders". This is in part a story of the new kids coming into this sport and the way it transpired. First though there was some pretty good racing. 14/29C class, Nick Holda brought out his kx this weekend to try a GP, and Alex Grunder was also here to make sure his points lead was safe. Nolyn Thompson ventured out of his comfort zone (sx racing) and did some tree dodging with Chris Godfrey pushing his Honda to the limits to keep a solid top five pace. God16

Saturday so Sunday became another scorcher, thankfully some early morning clouds kept it tolerable til late in the day. The morning started off with kids. 85's and 65's on the big course with 65 beginners on the little course. This was the local kids day today. Landon Lee from the famed Lee Excavating family holeshotted and led the entire event. It wasn't a run away, rather a hard fought battle with the Doer twins. Reece Doer at first was coming from a little ways back but Regan Doer pushed on Lee early in the hour race. Jake Mueller was running 4th. Off the pace a little he was riding his own race with Ayden White doing what he had to, earning top five. Once the race got settled in a bit the Doer kids traded places and it was Regan pushing on Landon to try to get the victory, but as time expired Lee held on for the win. 65cc was equally good with Jake Hasten putting in some solid laps right ahead of Brody Brewer. This could have been 18

one of his first Hare Scramble events, Hasten was faster in the tight stuff and Brewer on the open areas did well. In the end Hasten won by about a minute with Ethan Fox finishing third. The 50Jr class had an ability variance that is seen in this class from time to time as it is where future riders start their racing "history". Wyatt Johnson put in a solid ten laps for the win with Cassie Fairfield taking second with nine. The next three contestants are all riders who in the last few races are brand new. Weston Sticha and best friend Ethan Breitwieser have been bangin out laps at the riding park for a while now, this being their third race, dads don't have to run behind and help as much. But for Eric Smith today was his day to get that coveted exercise. Henry Smith's first race was today! Henry had his share of spills but there was plenty of help to make sure he kept going. Not sure how dad managed to race the afternoon class
in +30B and take a third after jogging around behind Henry for better part of a half hour. It's always a good day when the little ones have fun and get around, particularly if it's the first race out. Races come and go, but everyone remembers their first race, their first award and all the rest surrounding that day. This was Henry Smith's day to remember. AA class didn't have a turn out, but Matt Mcdonald seen some easy points so he got on his buddy's machine and played around for the win. Garrett Ward actually overalled the event with Sklyar Harkless in second. The A class was surprised at the end of the day with AA purse being paid to them. Elijah Berryman didn't have the clutch trouble he had at CCDR a month ago and came from behind to pass the others in the morning race for the overall. Beating Greg Gourley who is 3x his age by 23 seconds. Kevin Finefield and Gourley were a mere second apart at the finish

line. They had solid performances for this event. Once again the +50 classes and Open C were the biggest of the day, seems like in woods racing the older folks can still be compete and have a fun day of racing year in and out. Fox Valley Off Road's next event is Sept 15th and 16th. GP/ HS double headers for both of it's remaining race weekends, the event on Sunday is also a WFO points event which is always a good time. You guessed it! It was good to be back at the Arkansaw Cycle Park in bustling metropolis of Arkansaw, WI. Traffic was brutal coming in as we dodged many of the local whitetail creatures that inhabit the area. 2018 was the July Double Header 20 Year Anniversary race. The Richardson family hired in the Dirt Monkey LLC aka Marty Leum to do the pre dirty work and he had the track in tip top shape for the huge turnout of riders that showed up from Wisconsin and Minnesota to battle over the two day event. Open ride day on Friday and points races both Saturday and Sunday gave everyone ample ride time on the minty circuit. All was well on Friday for open ride and Saturday’s races were followed by an epic firework show to end the evening. Sunday, the 40B/C class was one to keep an eye on with the large turnout of sixteen riders. Moto one had Jeff Ramsay get out front and lead to the checkers. Jack Pogany was a solid second followed by Barry Weinzirl, Troy Fisher and Clint Wanta who had a flurry of

Weinzirl went 3-6 which was good enough for fourth just beating Burch who had a solid second moto for fifth overall. 250C had twenty-four riders on Sunday and Tristan Woolf was able to get through turn one first ahead of Dane Klinger and Shawn Haus. End of lap two, Klinger battled with Woolf through last straight away section before finish line and tried to sweep around the outside. Woolf held on and while that was developing Braden Warner made his way into third place ahead of Hayden Zurn. Kevin Gollubske moved up as well into fifth. third followed by Zurn and Gollubske who were in about a six rider battle for those spots. Moto two, Klinger got in front along with John Meyer and Zurn. You could tell these guys have been improving all season as some of the battles were pretty intense - yet fairly clean racing. I was sitting down in the middle of the track and could even hear some metal clanks from the bar banging and rubbing that was going on in some of the bowl turns. Klinger stretched out his lead and Warner moved into the runner-up spot mid moto followed by Judea Youngthunder, Zurn and Gollubske. End of the race we had Klinger with the win, followed by Warner, Youngthunder, Zurn and Meyer. 65cc 7-11 was all about the Grant Neubauer show. He was able to get out front in moto one then check out from Brecken Maas. Lane Rhyme took home third place ahead of Brad Ottenad and
Kyler Gollubske who had a good holeshot and kept him up front with the leaders for much of the race. Moto two, again Neubauer took control and led to the checkers. Maas was consistent going 2-2 beating Ottenad who moved up a spot going 4-3 for third overall. Gollubske also moved up and went 5-4 for fourth beating Rhyme who finished seventh in the moto. Colton Berray and Jaggyr Wolf were knocking on the door to get inside that top five. 85cc 9-11 was led by Milo Maas from Chippewa Falls WI both motos. In moto one a good battle for second between Kameron Steindl and Lance Torp developed. Ryder Johnson, Brady Kirchner and Kyler Gollubske also had a good race going on. For the overall, it was Maas going 1-1, Steindl was 2-2 and Torp 3-3. Schoolboy 12-17 moto one had Cole Godfrey with the holeshot ahead of Brandon Martyniak and Reed Klinger. You

could throw a blanket over those three riders for the first half of the moto. Behind them was a heck of battle for fourth with a couple riders. Martyniak finally found a way around Godfrey and was able to take that checker flag first, followed by Godfrey, Klinger, Aiden McCormick and Jake Hunger. Moto two, Martyniak grabbed the lead followed by Godfrey and Klinger and everyone was wondering if Godfrey had enough gas in the tank to make a run at Martyniak and swap moto positions. On the second lap, Martyniak went down in the first turn giving the lead to Godfrey with Klinger right on his tail. By the end of that lap, Martyniak made up the gap from his tip over and was back on the leaders. On the last lap he was able to get around both riders in the new s turn section before the valley plateaus and back into the lead. He finished 1-1 ahead of Godfrey and Klinger. Hunger made up a spot and took home fourth ahead of McCormick. The Richardson’s would like to thank everyone for coming to the event and also all that helped out. Mendota, Illinois - August 18 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com
M
egacross got back underway August eighteenth after two races in a row to make up for the rain earlier in the summer. At the beginning of the month everyone was treated to a new layout on the track which took out the table top across the fence, extended the straight away, and added a bowl turn to spice things up. The new layout definitely added more opportunities for passing. Tonight in particular the track was looking great. There was a lot of time spent the day before getting water down and everything ready for action. The time was well spent and as the night went on the track was getting better, making for some really fun racing to watch.
The summer is going by fast as ever with the last few races of 2018 looming, and the fight to finish will certainly be strong with everyone going after those all important points. Starting off the night with a great action was the 125 class. Off the line it was Kash Schnowske jumping out front with Garrett Ward and Gavin Sienkiewicz right on his back tire. Schnowske held on into the whoops for the lead with Austin Beaty sneaking to the inside to take second with Sienkiewicz right behind as the pack battled to the table tops. Heading down the straight Sienkiewicz pulled hard to take over second leaving Beaty back to battle with Ward who was charging hard. It didn’t take long before Ward was dove to the inside before the finish to take over third, continueing the
push to the front. As the pack came around for the second lap Schnowske had the lead locked down as Ward won a battle with Sienkiewicz, blasting the inside before the finish to keep the drive moving as they hit the whoops. Then Schnowske laid the bike down in the corner before the whoops allowing Ward to make the pass for the lead. Schnowske got up to keep second just ahead of Sienkiewicz. After a very exciting five laps, the checkered flag marked Ward’s the win, ahead of Schnowske and Sienkiewicz. Supermini was another exciting class to watch tonight with some great passing out there tonight. Off the line it was Lucas Geistler blasting off the gate, followed by Connor Pilon and Zachary Brunner leading everyone around the first turn. Heading into the whoops Talan Zollers held a skinny line through the inside and was able to jump in behind Geistler, taking second leaving Brunner in third to fight off the pack. Geistler was already making a gap as they came down the straight. Ian Murphy got caught in the traffic off the start was making moves and soon up to Brunner, looking for a way around. Coming back around on the third lap Geistler now had a sizable lead with Zollers trying to make up time. Murphy finally got a good run through the table tops and was able to beat Brunner down the straight to secure third through the bowl turn. As the laps ticked by Geistler hung on up front for the win with Zollers and Murphy rounding out the podium. Open C was one to watch tonight with every gate full, making for a very tense start for everyone. The gates dropped to the pack all pushing hard to the first turn as Emily Smith got out front on her Kawasaki for the holeshot. Right behind was Brett Aimone and Tanner Galyen. As they moved to the hairpin before the whoops a giant pile up happened on the collecting many riders. Making it through into the whoops unscathed was Aimone taking the lead, Galyen in second and Jack Sparks moving up to third. Flying up into the turn after the straight CYCLE USA, September 2018

was Kevin Mulligan taking it wide to grab third with several riders now up towards the front looking to challenge. Lane Christians was on a mission, making quick work of jumping into third then second in the next turn ahead of Galyen. Mulligan fought back to get third after a great performance out there tonight. Aimone came across with the win with Christians keeping second after a great ride ahead of Mulligan. The night wrapped up with another successful Megacross race in the books. The summer is certainly slipping away with everyone heading back to school soon and weather starting to feel much more reasonable. Megacross isn’t showing any signs of slowing down with everyone out there going for the best finishes possible. The points are getting tight in a lot of classes and everyone is starting to feel the excitement. Kyleigh McLaughlin won the Women’s class.

ittenberg is pretty close to smack dab in the middle of Wisconsin. You can find it right off Highway 29 which runs from Green Bay all the way to Minnesota and it’s not far from the north and south corridor of I39. Thousands of motorists drive by the facility each day but I highly doubt most of them even know this motocross track is even there. Something that isn’t a secret is the fact that no one likes only one race weekend a year at this facility. This year was District 16 points racing on Saturday and Sunday so riders good enjoy ample time at the facility. Race action on Sunday was heating up as most riders by now had plenty of track time. After Saturday’s races, I heard a few positive comments on the couple of small changes to the track that everyone seemed to like. Both whoop sections were in prime condition and for once, we didn’t have to face any summer time storms so the track rutted up nicely. 250C was the largest class on the weekend and it was Tristan Woolf from Mercer who pulled the moto one holeshot over Dane Klinger, part time announcer Kevin Gollubske and the rest of the pack. On lap three Klinger made a move for the lead and took over the top spot from Woolf. The two eventually pulled away from Gollubske. On the last lap Easton Block had some issues allowing Gage Neubauer to take over fourth after making a few passes to move up during the moto. Hayden Zurn rounded out the top five. Zurn grabbed moto two holeshot with Gollubske running second. It didn’t take Klinger long to work his way to the front and on lap two he was back in command. Zurn held onto second ahead of Gollubske and Max Mayer who was running fourth. Tristan Alloway and John Meyer were also making their way up. Alloway got around Gollubske. Overall, Klinger went 1-1 and Zurn, with his good start in moto two gave him the runner up spot. Gollubske’s consistent 3-4 moto scores netted him the bronze medal ahead of Al30

loway who went 6-3. The Peewee classes were a highlighted class as United Rentals stepped up and donated 2018 United Rentals Die Cast Collectable Water Trucks to the two class winners. As word spread, it was pretty evident these mini pilots were ready to get those top spots. Moto one saw Cole Goedert in 50Sr take the moto win over Zack Augustine and Brayton Wills capture the 50Jr win. Augustine put on a late moto charge to close the gap at the checkers and make it a heck of a race. Moto two saw a couple more challenges as Taylor Ebben and Mason Mccanna battled pretty much the entire moto in Sr. The battle out front was on and everyone

knew it was going to go down the finish line. At the checkers Goedert kept his composure and bagged the win over Augustine. Ebben finished third and Mccanna fourth. In 50Jr Wills got out front early and ran away from Jett Wolf and Avery Henry. Vinnie Lohman and Brayden Brandemuehl traded positions for fourth and fifth. 85cc 9-11 was a pretty full class and it was Ayden Price with the moto one win over Deegan VanVreede. Ethan Ebben took home third place ahead of Jace Miller and Lance Torp. Moto two again saw Price take command of the class and bring home the hardware going 1-1. VanVreede and Ebben were both solid and

consistent going 2-3. Torp got a fourth in moto two beating out Brad Ottenad. Schoolboy 1 saw Haiden Waelchli running up front in moto one before handing over the lead to Brandon Martyniak. Reed Klinger, Jake Hunger and Cole Torp ran top five early. Waelchli had bike problems and eventually dropped out. At the checkers, it was Martyniak, Klinger, Hunger, Torp and Dylan Thomson. Moto two, Waelchli was back and challenging for the lead but Martyniak got the taste of victory and didn’t want to give that up. Klinger and Hunger ran 34 behind the leaders. At the checkers it was Martyniak with the unbeatable 1-1 to get the overall. Klinger went 2-3 for second overall. With the sun and high humidity it took about three days to finally get hydrated but again when you only get one chance a year to have fun at the hidden gem in Wittenberg you give it everything you can to be there and do your best. Spring Creek Viking Clash Millville, Minnesota - August 19 By Rolfe Otterness
Ben Adamson trounced the assembled hordes to grab the glory in the A classes as Spring Creek MX Park hosted the eleventh annual Viking Clash. With cash on the line, there was a little more twist of the wrist as the A class riders throttled their way around the course but Adamson was able to wring the most out of his iron steed with a 1-1 finish in 250 and a 1-2 in the Open class. Jake Loberg showed that he might have had a chance to get an overall from Adamson by winning the second moto but tough luck in moto one led to a 7-1 score. There were a lot of other success stories as around 650 entries were totaled for the day, possibly due to the fact that the weather was finally cooperating a bit. Dry weather meant no major mud-scraping or heroic track maintenance was necessary. Along with the good weather the usual off-track entertainment on Saturday night (tug-of-war, live music, etc) helped make for another memorable weekend.
Leighton Oswald gets some extra attention on the podium after his victory in 50cc Oil Injected 4-8.

class took to the track for their first moto. Adamson took the lead shortly into the first lap and began to edge away. Riley Kroone settled into third for a few laps with first Bailey Kroone and then Austin Kienast on his rear fender. There was a tight gaggle of riders crossing the line about ten seconds adrift of Adamson with Kienast taking third from R. Kroone on the last lap. Moto two featured Kienast grabbing one of the three J & B Pallets holeshot awards he would snare for the weekend. Adamson wasn’t messing around though and soon had the lead with Kienast dropping back after a spot of trouble. Patrick Miller and Bailey Kroone set up shop in second and third with Kenny Mandryk a bit behind. Adamson won with a decent lead while Miller finally crossed the finish line about a second or two clear of B. Kroone. Riley Kroone snapped up fourth with Kienast making it back to fifth after his earlier problems. Tyrell Williams led through turn one in the first Open C race. year and was quick to take over out front with Ian Miller and Dan Dvorak also demoting Williams back to fourth on the first lap. Paider pushed beyond the limits at the bottom of Mount Martin and crashed in some tricky ruts. Miller was quickly by and so were a number of other riders before Paider could regain forward progress. Miller took it on home for the win with Dvorak runner-up at the flag. Daulton Schoon pulled in for third ahead of Williams and Paider who had to slice his way through traffic in quick fashion. Miller snagged the holeshot in moto two but glory is fleeting as he dropped way back in the pack after a first lap miscue. Paider motored into the lead then and went on the secure the win with Dvorak back just a bit to take the checkered in second. Schoon and Miller were having a battle which pushed them both to pass third place at the time Williams on the last lap. Then Miller powered past Schoon coming down Collarbone hill to take third away just yards away from the finish line. Williams rounded out the top five maybe four seconds back. In the 65cc 7-11 class there was a miniature motorcycle battle of immense proportions as Wyatt McGrath and Tanner Schlegel went at it for the lead. A bit farther back there was another good dice taking place with Ethan Rennie and Vin34

cent Harens dueling. McGrath kind of blew it on the last lap and lost a number of seconds getting going again so Schlegel went on to take an easy win. McGrath recovered adequately to take second with a safe lead over Harens and Rennie. Rounding out the top five was Kai Morgan. McGrath took over the lead from Cade Groen as they navigated the whoops in moto two. Groen must have taken a digger as he dropped way back while Schlegel and Harens were promoted to second and third. McGrath had it easy for the win with Schlegel just too far back after a bad start to mount any kind of a challenge. Harens, Morgan and Rennie ran in a pack across the line to round out the top five. The 125 two stroke class had some great battling up front. In moto one Weston Milas, Cameron Skaalerud and Harry Gigson were in a tremendous scuffle over the lead until they tried to fit three bikes wide in the turn at the bottom of Mount Martin. Gibson lost out in that maneuver and flopped to the ground, recovering far back in the pack. Milas and Skaalerud battled on until Skaalerud finally made a pass for the lead on the last lap. Rounding out the top five were, in third, the fastest girl in Iowa, Linkin Sarauer, Luke Geis and Gavin Tilford.
Skaalerud pulled off a holey in moto two and edged away from the Milas/ Gibson battle over second to take the win with a solid lead. Owen Sailor and Sarauer cruised in for fourth and fifth. Fun night in Portage Portage, Wisconsin - July 26 CMJ Raceway team
B
ack in Spring when the annual schedules were released, District 16 Dirt Trackers were happy to see the event in Portage, WI included. In 2017 Chris Halverson’s team from CMJ Racing along with a bunch of help from D16 Referee Danny Vrana made the return of motorcycle and atv dirt track racing in Portage possible. Many years ago the Columbia County Fairgrounds was host to a regular schedule of dirt track racing. In the fall of 2016 the fair board went to Halverson with the request of adding another event. The facility was already hosting his annual Stadium styled motocross, so a quick thought about the history of the facility made short track an easy choice. After a successful event in 2017 where fans, riders and the fair board were all happy with the effort they quickly asked for it to be scheduled again in 2018. Fast forward to late July of this year and only one thing was missing from the day’s event. Missing was the threat of rain... a good thing after a wet and frustrating season for most of our dirt track riders that can’t seem to catch a break to get out and really enjoy thier choice of racing. With clear skies, warm weather and plenty of sun, the challenge for today’s racing was putting some moisture into the track. A water truck put in hours and hours of work and as the sun set a pretty nice 1/3 mile track came together and everyone we talked with had a lot of fun. This is a fair event - so the schedule of classes is condensed to put on a good three hour show. Ten classes in total... something for pretty much everyone and it was a good quick night. After
practice and heats, the Quad riders lined up for the first final of the night. In the Open Quad class Dan Mecklenberg took the first two laps to break away from Carson Patrick and Eli Komarek. Once he got a gap it was all over as he seemed to only get quicker as the race went on.
Later in the night’s program a second group of Quad riders came to the line in a Knobby class. Honda mounted Jake Mchoes took that win ahead of Justin Bleck and five others. The Breakless bike class, like Vintage, seemed to be among the crowd favorites.
Cody Funk won two classes on the SSR 450.
Dan Mecklenberg topped the Open Quad class. CYCLE USA, September 2018

It wasn’t about the speed or hard fought battles - but the cool old bikes and the riders on them. When it was all done and said Larry Pettis took his beautiful old Harley to the class win ahead of William Ferguson, also on a cool Harley. Cody Funk made it a good night winning two classes. In Open Amateur he beat Emmett Sund and Ezra Brusky to the finish line. Later, in the nine rider 450 Amateur class he once again had to fend off early efforts by Sund. Once he got away he dug in and put in solid laps for his second win of the evening on the well put together R-3 Motorsports SSR450. Brusky finished third here as well after a close race with Mason Barth and Cole Andresen. Sund didn’t go home empty handed by any means as he swept up his first win in the 85cc class, edging out Ethan Ramsey and Vincent Jung. If that wasn’t enough, Sund won the seven rider 250cc Amateur final ahead of Ramsey and Mason Barth. The Senior class delivered the closest racing of the night... won by a rider that still remembers what it was like racing here in Portage all those years back Steven Kasten. The always crafty Kasten had Vintage class winner Jim Kirschbaum all over his rear fender right from the start of the race. Then mid race, from what seemed like out of no where charged Dan Peterson to make it an exciting three way battle. Peterson slipped past Kirschbaum and then by Kasten as they got the white flag. Kasten swapped lines and returned the pass for victory just before the finish line. After the race he was quick to say it was “just like Portage of the old days - good close and fun racing”. Remember when we started this article we talked about the great and clear weather? Out of no where and not on any forecast light rain drops started falling on the last race of the evening - for the $1000 Open Pro event. After a restart and even harder rain falling Jesse Janisch of Beaver Dam was quick to point out that he wanted the largest chunk of that big payout. He never let anyone get close enough to threaten his claim to that fame and won the final race of the evening. Just as quick, the rain went away - it was 36

Camp Douglas Hare Scramble Second attempt to get this new District 16 event off proves well worth it! Camp Douglas, Wisconsin - August 5 By Chris Halverson, Photos by Andrew Shaw
O
ff-road riders from five states were treated to a new course at the Georgeson family farm in Camp Douglas on August fifth. Marty and his sons Jared and Jason have all raced Harescrambles and wanted to open up their land for an event. A 2017 event was added to the District 16 schedule, but heavy rains flooded the pit area so the event had to be cancelled. For 2018 they laid out a fun yet challenging course that seemed to be very well liked by the racers. Mother Nature still got a jab in with a rain shower that cancelled Saturday evening’s bonfire and fireworks. The course contained a mellow supercross track, an optional Endurocross section, a fast grass track section and miles of fresh wooded trails with ideal dirt. The first race of the day at 9 am was the 85’s, 65’s and Women. Another brief Jonathan Geary of the B class over one of the Enduro section jumps.

shower had them staging in the rain. As is usually the case for the past couple seasons, Travis Bloyer took the early lead in the 85cc class on his Husqvarna and held on for the win. Local rider Mason Kubis on a Suzuki and Rex Valek on a KTM rounded out the top three. Walker Garetson won the 65 class on a Husqvarna and passed many of the 85’s in doing so. Nadia Ellingson topped the Women’s class. That was the bright spot of the day for the family as Todd, District 16 President, retired early in the +40 afternoon race and sister Autumn injured her wrist in the C class race. Next up was the 50cc race. They were treated to a shortened version of the Endurocross section and a much longer course than at many events. The top three finishers names on the score sheet; Garetson (Beau), Drone (Kellen), and Laubmeier (Brooks) read like an A class results sheet from a decade or two ago. The kids had now set the bar for their fathers in the afternoon race!
The 11:00 race featured the +50, C, and Vintage classes with thirty-six total entries. The loop from the 9:00 race was used along with an additional more challenging section. In +50, District 16 regulars; Carl Jahns, Brad Kortbein, Bryan Nebel, along with Ron Whipple who made the trip up from Illinois, completed one more lap than the others in class, with Jahns taking the win. Daniel Kirkbusch finish fifth, then went on to take third in the +30B class in the afternoon. The C class was the largest of the day with twenty-one racers. Yamaha rider Noah Dalsing and Husqvarna mounted Caden Hosking put on a great show up front and were never more than 35 seconds apart when coming through scoring. Noah took the hard fought win. With the virgin trail and soft soil, many tree roots were exposed during the race. Local rider Lance Bunde was seen after the race inspecting his newly acquired arm scrapes which he said were the result of one of those roots. CYCLE USA, September 2018

I heard a spectator comment “Someone’s jumping the supercross track double on a Yamaha IT!”. That someone would turn out to be AA class regularSpeedy Pete Laubmeier. Pete went go on to claim the Vintage class win along with a seventh place finish in the afternoon’s hotly contested AA class. James Williams and Buck Vincent rounded out the top three. Fourth place went to Steven Kaczmarowski who rode nearly the entire race with a broken clutch cable. The two hour, 1:00pm race used all of the trail from the earlier races and an ad-
ditional loop which went through a large area of planted pine trees. This section contained some very tight areas with log crossings. The fifth of the five wave start was the +30B class. Dave Peters rode well to take the win. District 16 Referee Matt Sather found enough time between registration, scoring and printing results to make it to the start on time and go on to finish second. McCutchin Motorsports and CMJ Raceway sponsored rider Brent Hanke took the B class win, besting Patrick Mullarkey on a KTM by nearly a minute.

Third went to Jake Zyhowski. A slew of riders; Greg Steffes, Joe Vadeboncouer, Aaron Cihlar, Ronny Zastrow and Karl Lueschow kept the racing tight in the +40 class, finishing in that order. Craig Amerling pulled off by the scoring area and said that he was retiring for the day. After a short sit, he said the course was just too much fun to not ride, and jumped back in to finish. Upon seeing the Endurocross section that morning, Lueschow commented that it looked a bit sketchy. Once the race was over, Karl was all smiles and stated that he loved the course and hoped it would be on the schedule again in 2019. The 16 rider A class was moving at a very fast pace with a few of the top riders mixing it up throughout the day with some of the AA class riders which had a minute head start. Local rider Ben Kortbein had to retire after three laps with an engine issue. Jay Mittelstaedt of Jay’s Powercenter – the event’s primary sponsor, finished seventh on his Gas Gas after tweaking his back while picking up his bike during the race. Mitchell Buth took a well-deserved second place after bending his KTM’s shift lever on the first lap, and having to ride the rest of the race stuck in one gear. Husqvarna mounted Heath Drone won by nearly a half minute. With an extra $500 added to the normal AA class purse, thirteen riders showed up for a shot at the money. The first corner was quite chaotic with everyone wanting to be the first to the tight and challenging Endurocross section. Dylan Narrel’s chances of a good start were ruined when the back-up bike he was riding did not start on the first kick. Mat Herrington on his Husqvarna 125 also had a bad start and trouble on the first lap. Mat had spent the entire prior day walking the woods at Hixton, in preparation for the upcoming Gran Prix and Harescrambles doubleheader. He still managed to work his way back to a very respectable eighth place finish. His wife Lyndsey was also on trail duty Saturday and then came with Mat to Camp Douglas to do registration and scoring for the event. As noted earlier, Speedy Pete was on his second race of the day and still managed a seventh
place finish. Ryan Moss finished sixth riding most of the race with his visor broken off. A quick glance at the consistency in his lap times showed that he must have bounced back up as fast as he went down. Tanner Whipple, JD Friebel and Eric Mischler finished 3-5th respec-
tively and were rarely separated by more than thirty seconds. The main battle that the spectators were anticipating was that between GNCC XC3 round 3 winner Cody Barnes and Kenda National Enduro regular- Nate Ferderer. Barnes was armed with his Beta from GNCC racing
while Ferderer was riding a 2009 Yamaha YZ-125. Barnes grabbed the lead and the battle ensued. At the hour mark, only four bike lengths separated the two. Both the Supercross track section and the Endurocross section were easily accessible to the spectators. The skills and determination shown by these two riders drew many cheers from the spectators at those areas of the course. In the end, Barnes was able to hold on to the win and take home the largest portion of the purse. A big “thank you from all goes out to the Georgeson family for hosting the spectacular event! Trials returns to Manchester Manchester, Iowa - August 11 By Kevin Huber
L
ast year Chris Halverson of CMJ Raceway acted on his vision to have a Trials event at a whitewater park built on the Maquoketa River in Manchester, Iowa. This was in conjunction with a town celebration called the “Bacon and Hops Festival”. That trials event was not on any club schedule, but word spread through the Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota trials clubs and around 25 riders were there. After the event the riders were so impressed that they quickly spread the word about the unique sections with many step-up and down rocks placed on the banks. It was also unique watching the kayakers and float tubers going down the river just a few feet away from the riders. This year both AMA District 16 and 17 added this event to their schedule for season points. This resulted in 56 riders from Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, and Iowa competing in the various classes. The Tuesday before the event there was a little scare. A six inch rain storm had caused the river to rise over six feet. This covered most of
the rocks that were to be used for the event. Chris was worried that he might have to cancel the event. Fortunately, the river came down fast and by Friday morning it had dropped five feet, allowing a group of volunteer riders to mark all eight sections for the Saturday event. Unlike last year, two of the sections were on the other side of the river, requiring riders to cross the bridge on the sidewalk that was roped off for them. One of those sections had a steep sandy hill climb that offered some excitement for the top three classes. Not everyone made it up their first try. The other new section took the champ class out into the river on a rock jetty before sending them back up the hill over very large rocks. Once again there was a large amount of spectators. They could sit in one spot and see almost all of the sections, even the two Pat Doll won on the other side of the river. the Expert class.

Wiles & Janisch at Peoria Peoria, Illinois - August 18 By Gordon Lunde
H
enry Wiles continued his unbelievable win streak at the August 18th Peoria TT. Fourteen consecutive wins on this challenging track, the last two on the revamped version. A huge amount of work was done to get the track in shape after recent heavy rains in the area. Compliments to all involved in doing such a great job prepping it all. The hills were covered with excited race fans for the 72nd running of this legendary race. It is the longest consecutively running dirt track in the country. Due to the track prep and time constraints, AFT twins went
straight from qualifying into semis, no heat races, leaving twins teams struggling for set up time. Wiles qualified third in class with a 27.313 time, then won his semi to put the Bandit Industries/ Wilco Racing/ Willy Built/ Kawasaki Ninja 650 on the front row for the national start. At the start of the twenty-five lap final, Wiles slipped and got off in fourth place. Ahead were fast qualifier Briar Bauman, Jake Johnson and AFT Twins points leader Jared Mees, all on Indian Scout FTR750’s. Mees and Johnson fell back quickly as Wiles put on his charge to the front. Bauman was out front flying and it took Wiles to lap five to catch him.

After chasing for another three laps, Wiles made his move on lap eight and got by Bauman coming out of last turn. Bauman tried to repass into turn one, but Wiles was not to be denied. From there on it was all Wiles and his Kawasaki. The undisputed King of Peoria then went on to build a strong lead to the finish. Bauman held onto second place with Johnson securing the final podium spot. With this victory, his first on the year, Wiles moves ahead of Chris Carr for the most AFT Twins class wins at Peoria and keeps him second in the season points race. In AFT Singles, 2015 and 2017 Peoria winner Jesse Janisch claimed a repeat victory. Turning in fast qualifier time, heat race win and second in his semi, Janisch looked to be on his game from the start again this year. With permission from AFT, Janisch ran the #196 during practice in honor
of his friend and fellow AFT Singles competitor Alec Muth who passed away recently from injuries he received in a race at South Dakota. Janisch (Roof Systems/ West Bend HD Yamaha YZ450F) got off the start in third place chasing leader Ryan Wells and Cole Frederickson aboard Honda CRF450R’s.
Frederickson got by Wells very early and led for the next couple of laps before Janisch stuck himself in the lead with a pass, in the air, over the first jump. Janisch then proceeded to pull away to the win. Wells managed to get past Frederickson again to reclaim second. Get your tickets for the 73rd running of this great race next summerI’ll be there! Great Weekend at Azzie Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 12 Aztalan Cycle Club
S
ummer arrived in full force for this extended weekend of motocross activity at the popular Lake Mills facility. The Aztalan Cycle Club kicked it all off with an open ride on Saturday. That evening the new and quickly growing Twilight Series racing took over under the lights. Minis, youth and pit bikes - a lot of pit bikes as nearly sixty entries filled those three classes alone all total there was close to 150 entries for this short evening of fun. Sunday saw temps climb well into the 80’s as there was nothing but sunshine all day for the almost 400 entries on this District 16 points paying event. Racing kicked off with the youngsters in the 50cc 7-8 class on the front half of the big track. Ryder Skodras got a good jump and held it through the first corner with Jayce Wolf right next to him. As they came to the barn section for the first time Skodras momentarily got hung up and that was all Wolf needed to slip past. Skodras held onto second with Michigan’s Cole Goedert in third. As the laps ticked away, Zach Augustine worked up to fourth just ahead of Chase Blazek. In the second moto Wolf grabbed the holeshot and led Skodras through every

lap. They were close again and quick to share smiles with each other after a fun moto where they both rode well and Wolf took the win. Behind them it was a flipped order from the first race. Blazek had a great start and ran in third all moto with Augustine and Goedert behind him. They were all tied up in the overall points
with eight each so the second moto set the overall order - Blazek getting the best of it for third. Using the smaller track up top, 50Jr left the gate with full enthusiasm... and parents chasing around the infield fence line to keep an eye on them all. Out front, Lacey Jennison had timed the gate per-
fectly to lead Jett Wolf, Kodie Kadinger, Grant Pellmann, Audi Agnew and the rest of the eleven rider class. Wolf kept pace with Jennison through each lap. By midmoto Pellmann had slipped by Agnew for third as Kadinger ran in fifth. Jennison felt Wolf at her back fender to the checkered but never flinched getting the win. Moto two looked like it may be a repeat off the start with Jennison leading Wolf. Pellmann and Skyler Fritz were there and ahead of Kadinger this time though. It took a while, but it all changed up as Wolf found a way into the lead as Kadinger made some moves and got all the way up to third on the last lap. This set up a unique result as the top three in the class were all young ladies... Wolf, Jennison and Kadinger. Careful boys, these young speedsters are coming your way sooner or later. Smooth and steady often works for great results... proven today by Brock Noreen in the Open B class. Noreen led the first 1.5 laps until the non-stop efforts of DJ Gritzmacher propelled him into the lead. Logan Rusk, Tyler Gamble, Nicholas Gaskell and Nick Heilman were

in the mix fighting behind them all moto. Just when it looked like Gritzmacher had the win he lost two spots with just over a lap to go. He managed to get back around Rusk for second but Noreen had the win locked down. Gaskell fought hard for fourth ahead of Gamble.
In the second moto it was all Noreen out front as we missed out on a rematch when Gritzmacher didn’t start. Sportland2/ Mike’s Motorsports/ J&J Masonry backed Noreen after the moto, “I got the holeshot in the first moto then was passed - but retook the lead when he went down. This moto I got out front and rode smooth for the win. I just got the 450 this year and it has taken a while to get comfortable on it. The track was awesome and there’s a bunch of different lines out there so riding is great. I’d like to thank my mom and dad for all their support as well.” Behind Noreen, Gamble put in a solid ride for second and third overall (5-2). Rusk fought off and swapped spots with Heilman through the moto to prevail in third for second overall (3-3). Twenty-six riders left the gate with a sound of thunder in the Open C class... right away Jeremy Engelbart and Mark Wendt locked into a tussle for the lead. Shawn Haus and Brandon Heinzel were there with a good view as you could tell right away there were some riders cutting through the crowd to get towards the front. A lap later and the fight was still going out front with Austin Beilke now hot on their heels in third as Zaiden Sigmund was in fifth, all over Heinzel’s rear fender. The third and fourth laps saw plenty of changes as Engelbart bobbled CYCLE USA, September 2018

just a little in the sand allowing Wendt and Beilke to slide by. Jake Robinson was on fire, working up to fourth ahead of Sigmund for the final order. Wendt got the win, but not without a ton of work and late pressure from Beilke. In the second moto Shawn Haus was on it. Starting in second behind Engelbart, it took a while but once Engelbart began to run out of steam Haus moved to the front and grabbed the moto win (9-1). Wendt rode a solid race to finish second and still earn the overall (1-2). Wendt after the moto, “After the first three laps my arms really started giving up on me as I was riding so hard. I didn’t get the best of starts but managed to work my way back up and I’ll take second any day. I made it all up in the corners and back in the sand.” Engelbart slid back to fifth this time after starting out front again. As he crossed the finish line he was still plenty happy with his day. “I pulled the holeshot and led the laps early but then just pumped up and couldn’t keep up with them any longer. I don’t ride much because of work and it shows. I had a

blast just the same. The track was fun, a little rutted but that’s good and it was great to be out here.” The adult age classes were big today, as usual at Aztalan. In +45 nineteen riders saw the rear fender of Joe Schuster lead everyone out of the first turn. Schuster never had a chance to relax and celebrate the great start as frequent class front runner Frank Weiss was knocking hard in second. By the third lap Schuster was done looking over his shoulder and just fighting to hold on to that lead. Michael Ferkans was now in third with Kevin Yde and Tom Ferguson filling out the top five. Schuster finally gave up the lead on the last lap after a great effort to beat the relentless Weiss.
Yde had the best reactions off the second moto start and led Schuster and Weiss through the first lap. Out back Schuster took over on lap two and Weiss quickly moved into second. Like the first moto, Weiss went right after Schuster. Weiss didn’t get it done until the last lap, making a pass stick for another win after another fun battle between the two long time competitors. The Women’s class saw Sportland2’s Bryanne Wolf lead Haley Nowicki most of the moto. Near the end, and out of sight Wolf ran into a problem and Nowicki grabbed the win. Dana Hanna, Brittany Cornelius and Brooke Kennebeck had a nice tussle over the next few spots with Kennebeck winning out for third.
Hanna finished fourth just ahead of Cornelius in the fourteen rider class. Wolf put the first moto behind her off the start in moto two and led everyone right to the checkered flag. Nowicki finished second ahead of Hanna who got the best of a four way battle this time. New to the track Makayla Peterson stepped it up to finish fourth in the moto after a sixth place in the first outing. Kennebeck was rock solid going 3-5 for fourth overall. Peterson made the trip down from Little Lake, Michigan (5 hours away) and had a good day. Peterson after the close racing, “I had good holeshots and was with riders all moto. It was a really good battle right to the end. There wasn’t any

bumping around or anything - just good fun racing. This is my first time here and it was a lot of fun - I’d love to come back again.” Ayden Price came over from Fall River, WI and made a statement in 85cc 9-13. After a hard fought first lap with Riley Busse, Price put his KTM out front and slowly motored away for the win. The running order was set after the opening lap as Gavin Templen, Ryan Bussen and Zane Siminak quickly filled the top and held there to the finish. The second moto was more of the same with Price pounding out impressive laps for a second run away win. Busse didn’t go home without his share of glory though as he topped three of his four motos in the 65cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-11 classes. Templen won both of his motos in 85cc 12-15 ahead of Brock Nowicki and Cooper Meyer. Templen at the end of his busy day, “I took first in both of my motos in this class and it was fun. It was hard though as the track got really rough. I’d like to thank Rob’s Performance for all thier help in getting my bike set and working well. Also my mom and dad.” Frank Weiss returned later in the twenty-seven rider +50 class and swept both moto wins ahead of Kevin Yde. Carl Hein had a good first moto starting in second before Yde worked past, but then didn’t finish moto two. Tim Boblin was glad to put in his consistent 4-3 motos for third overall ahead of Jeff Ramsay (5-4) and Gregg White (6-6). LTM Fly Series Continues Casey, Illinois - August 19 By James and Rollanda Pinckard
L
incoln Trail Motosports hosted round 6 of the Fly Showdown Series in Casey, IL. Rain leading up to the event left the track crew with a challenge. With 573 entries from eight states signed up to race the crew did a great job providing a good track. With that many racers and bikes on the track, it was rough, rutted and had multiple lines in every corner; it was awesome! Motocross at its best. You ever know when you’re in the presence of greatness? Well everyone at LTM this day should have had that feeling. Seven Team Green rider Krystian Janik (now only riding an 85) took four moto wins and two overalls in 85 Open and 85Jr. For those who didn’t get to watch Janik they were for sure on the fence to see Lance Kobusch. What they saw was pure smooth. Kobusch looked like he was on a different track. The rough, rutted track left everyone bobbling a little, except Kobusch. He has an effortless style with no wasted energy, reminding me of Robbie Reynard when he was young. Kobusch took four moto wins in the very stacked 250 and Open A classes. Expect to see him on TV at the Nationals and Supercross in the future but for now it was great having him here. Halls Husky rider Zennon Shain suffered an injury at the first race of the year that kept him off the track for some time. This weekend he was back and racing the Supermini and Schoolboy 1. In Schoolboy Zennon wasted no time going to the front for the first moto win with Kawasaki rider Jace Arrington second and Kevin Huddleston third. In the second moto it was more of the same with Shain taking the win again ahead of Arrington and Huddleston. In the Supermini class Shain showed he’s feeling fine because it was the last moto of the day and the track was super rough. Before the first moto I asked Zennon if he was going to win and he said "I’m going to try". In the first moto he took the holeshot and never looked back. KTM rider John Perovic put in a strong 52

ride for second ahead of Brayden Warfield. In the second moto Shain again nailed the start and took off with Perovic in tow. Shain kept on the gas and took yet another moto win. Perovic had another strong ride for second as KTM rider Ace Enloe rose to the third spot in the moto and overall. The +40A class was full of fast riders and one was Yamaha rider Anthony Mcvey. He said, "My home track is Joliet but I’m glad I made it down to LTM. I’m also riding Open A so I hope
it goes well today." After finishing eleventh in the Open A, which was a very stacked class, the battle in the 40A class was on. In the first moto it was a fourway battle for the lead between Honda rider Billy Fosnock, Mcvey, Ronnie Ford and Matt Pursley. Fosnock got himself out front and took the moto win. Behind him was a great race. As the moto ran the A riders caught the end of the B pack. Mcvey held second the first of the moto but Ronnie Ford made a pass having Mcvey on his tail the rest of the moto. As

the riders approached a B rider moved over to let them by and without knowing blocked Ford. Mcvey made the move passing Ford and went on to take second for the moto. In the second moto Fosnock had his Honda out front taking the win. Mcvey made his trip to LTM worth it taking second for the moto and overall. The battle this moto again included Honda riders Ford and Pursley. Some days everything goes your way and others not - for Ford it was a not. Pursley took third for the moto giving him third overall. Open B riders having a good close race.
All Fun at Muddy Waters Port Byron, Illinois - July 29 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com
M
uddy Waters was back in action July 29th with some great racing and an awesome turnout. The facility is in a constant state of improvement with the new owners really stepping up and making this place a great destination for riding and spending the weekend with family. The track has underwent some changes to add in some spice of a new layout as well as outfitting a full sprinkler system to make watering much more efficient. All the work is making an awesome track even better. There was a lot of great action out there, and some really tight races making for an entertaining Sunday for everyone. 250C delivered a great race today with twenty three riders lining up. In the first moto it was Lane Christians taking the win followed by Joe Quest and Kyleigh Mclaughlin. The gates dropped on the second moto with everyone tight around the first corner as Cameron Campbell grabbed the holeshot followed by Daniel Mormino and Christians. The three bat56

tled up the hill with Christians keeping it pinned to the top,l taking over second and running down the lead. Not far behind was Quest making moves as they dropped into the woods. After several laps went by things had shaken up once again with Christians in the lead Quest moving up to second and Mormino holding off a pack of riders while in third place. They fought all the way to the finish as Brain Goerdt was making up ground the entire race, sliding into third over the triple. Christians took the win and the overall for the day followed by Quest and Goerdt who went 5-3 for third overall. Up next was 85Jr. In the first moto Hunter Savage took the win followed by Christopher Colantoni and Sadie Quest. They took off in the second moto with Savage jumping out front on his KTM for the holeshot, with Quest and Colantoni right behind as they went up the hill into the sweeper. Colantoni came around the outside heading into the

back of the track to take over second while Savage was starting to make a gap up front. The laps wound down with Savage coming out top for the win and the overall. Open B was one to watch today with some great racing. In the first moto Nick Blumer came out on top followed by Joshua Franklin and Aaron Anderson. Heading off the line down the hill for moto two Eddie Kline had an early run to the line as Blumer came in hot from the outside to grab the holeshot. Right behind him was Anderson and Franklin all battling for position. As the pack started up the hill Scott Kooistra charged up to third behind Anderson as the group was close all the way to the back of track. Coming around on the next lap things had changed up quite a bit as Kooistra was pushing hard and into second now with Blumer still in the lead. Meanwhile Franklin had charged back and took over third. Then on a final charge Kooistra was able to get a good line around the outside to take over the lead. The checkers flew for Kooistra with Blumer and Franklin rounding out the podium. The overall went to Blumer having a first and second place finish, Franklin in second with a second and third, and Kooistra in third having finished fifth in the first moto. It was a great turn out for the track today and the dirt was amazing. The property is looking amazing and you can see all the hard work going into everything. The crew at Muddy Waters is working hard to keep the facilities in top shape and it really shows. Be sure to make your way out to catch a race or practice before the end of the season.
