Rapid Angels celebrate 50 years Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin - May 23 By Luke Parmeter Photos by Andy Kawa
O
n Sunday May 23rd, the Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club celebrated 50 years of hill climbing with nearly 1,000 spectators and more than 200 entries from five states. The technical hill featured four jumps, with most riders choosing to roll the first two and fly the rest. However, hill record holder Rick Parmeter went for all or nothing, launching off the first jump on both of his rides. Although both attempts ended with Parmeter on the ground, he got up right away and saluted the roaring crowd. “I had to go for it; you can’t get fast time without trying something different,” he explained. The hill maintained its shape fairly well after round one, but the soft dirt that Dyracuse is known for emerged later in the day, forming ruts that threw even the best riders off their game. As the jumps wore down, so did the times. Many riders found faster lines in round two amid the kickers scattered along the 300-foot hill. As temperatures soared well into the 90’s, Aaron Prebe and Kirk Mueller blazed even hotter rides throughout the day. Each rider took victory in three classes, with Mueller taking home fast time of the day with a scorching 7.731. The duo went 1-2 in the King of the Hill, with Prebe taking the top spot onboard his YZ450F. A “vintage” class featuring pre-1980 motorcycles was a crowd favorite. Starting midway up the hill, Chuck Lundborg won the Vintage Two-Stroke class with a time of 9.060 seconds, while local rider Chad Meyer nabbed victory in the Vintage 4-Stroke class with a time of 7.594 seconds onboard his Yamaha. Iowa’s Emily Schultz took the top spot in the Micro Mini class. Her first round time of 10.394 held off Wisconsin’s Kaden Funk and Casey Paider, who finished second and third respectively. Wisconsin’s Luke Cipala took victory in both the 65cc and Mini Jr. classes. Last year’s Wisconsin Mini Jr. Cham2

pion, Nathan Prebe, dominated the Mini Sr. class with a time of 9.886. Prebe was the only mini rider to drop below the 10-second mark. The 125 class is full of young riders, many of whom just graduated from the minis. However, hillclimb veteran Mel Piontek still has what it takes to win. Always a crowd favorite, Piontek took the top spot by more than a tenth of a second, and more importantly, showed the

kids how it’s done; his choice of smooth lines made his ride look effortless. A rule change in the 200 class now allows 250cc fourstrokes to compete against 200cc two-strokes. With the new rule in effect, half the riders showed up with 250cc four-strokes. Times were very similar as the two vs. four stroke battle waged on, but in the end it was Minnesota’s Reed Lexvold who took his CRF250 to victory with a time of 9.185 seconds. Riding a YZ250F, Illinois’ Eric Wheelwright took second, while Mel Piontek took third on his 200cc KTM twostroke. Compared to 200cc twostrokes, the 250cc four-strokes are very similar, and this class will no doubt grow in popularity. The 250 class came down to the wire, but Luke Parmeter’s first round time of 8.370 narrowly edged out Kirk Mueller’s second round time of 8.382. Third place went to Jeff Piontek, who ran a 8.400. The 450 class saw Aaron Prebe earn his first victory of the day. Prebe ran a fast 7.833 in the second round, the only 7-second ride in the class. In the FourStroke class, Prebe nabbed another first place; his time of 8.032 topped Eric Wheelwright’s 8.434 and Corey O’Neil’s 8.465 The 600 class drew all of the heavy hitters. With twenty entries, it was going to take a near perfect ride to win. Logan Cipala flowed up the hill with ease on his KX500 in 8.222, which earned him third place. Luke Parmeter and his KTM 560 four-stroke cruised up in 8.128, which was good enough for sec-

The 750 class once again saw Kirk Mueller and Luke Parmeter go 12, but Mueller wasn’t finished just yet. Late in the day Mueller flew his Open-class Suzuki up the hill in just 7.731 seconds. As the dust settled, the crowd witnessed the fastest time of the day and saw Mueller win his third class in a row. The top riders of the day squared off in the King of the Hill competition. The stage was set as Kirk Mueller, Aaron Prebe, Wade Schultz, Luke Parmeter, Logan Cipala, Corey O’Neill, Jack Paquette, Brian Kinney, and Rick Parmeter set out for battle. The hill was the roughest at this point in the day as the riders scanned for a smooth line. No one could touch Aaron Prebe, who launched his 450 up the hill in 7.833 seconds! From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Its hard to believe that we are already half way through our season. For many of us this has been a very busy year and it seems to have slipped away without near enough riding time. I always thought that once I got a little older, I would have more time to ride rather than less. Like many of you I find myself making hard decisions on riding/racing versus other activities. It was much easier to get to the track on weekends when my son was riding as that was our priority. Now that he is on his own I find many other things getting in the way of what I would really rather be doing. I have promised myself after the week of the 4th of July I am going to get to more of our events than I have so far. We do have a motorcycle trip planned for Yellowstone the week of the 4th, so at least I will be doing it on 2 wheels. This will be the first time in many years that I have been on a road trip. I am finding that I am enjoying the road almost as much as I enjoy riding in the dirt. A sure sign I am hitting the upper limits of the age scale. But as always it is still too much to give it up. July will be another busy month as we will have the Pro National MX coming to Minnesota’s Spring Creek Park. This is always an exciting weekend and we have our own homegrown racer Ryan Dungey currently in the points lead in the 450 class. The 250 class is the deepest it has been in decades. There are at least 12 racers that can win at any given race. The series so far has seen new winners at each race. We also have events for Quad MX at Motocity in Staples. The Stonelake Hare Scrambles which is always a very fun race. Mankato has a night Hillclimb on the schedule and there are several Dirt track races to attend. Lets not forget the legendary Mora Enduro, an event that is now in its fifth decade. It should be a great month for all of riders and racers. Right now there isn’t a lot to report on district business. Our work with government relations and the trail coalition has been recognized for an award. Tom and Karen Umphres will be going to WashOn The Cover: Kirk Mueller at the Wisconsin Rapids, WI hill climb May 23rd. Photo by Andy Kawa

D23 Enduro Season Opener Huntersville, Minnesota - June 6 By Michael C. Pohl
T
he District 23 Enduro season kicked off with a 52 mile event put on by the River Valley Enduro Riders on June 6th. Once again, the trails in the Huntersville State Forest were in superb condition. The club members put together a challenging, yet fun event. Each enduro has its own personality. Huntersville’s is lots of single track that flows nicely. Sand whoops rear their heads as the trail opens up. The sand is not deep, but your suspension settings and riding technique are tested on these rollers. There was a nice balance to the variety of the trails. Just when you’d be ready for a change of pace, the course would serve one up for you. Once in a while you’d ride through a section of pine plantation that almost made you feel like you were riding in a state park. Trail Boss Kraig Hinkemeyer and his trail crew had a bit of an “experience” just prior to the event. Straight line winds of 60+ mph thundered through the forest, just as they were finishing up clearing the course. “I personally saw over a dozen trees crash down, one of them nearly hit Don (Hansen)… he had to dive out of the way to avoid it.” Luckily, no one was injured, but there were several close calls, and, of course, it meant they had to start all over again clearing the trail. This year the River Valley Riders decided to go with the “Restart” format, meaning riders did not have to keep time. There was no “burning a check” at Huntersville in 2010. The D-23 enduro circuit opens and closes with restart enduro’s (the Duquette Enduro has offered “restart” events for several years). The remaining four events in D-23 are timekeeping enduros. It’s nice to have the va-

riety of events. Rider turnout was up compared to 2009, a sign that the new format is bringing more people to the sport, along with what appears to be an improving economy (hard to ride an enduro without a job). Yamaha-mounted Nate Ferderer took the overall win with Tim Nienow, also riding a Yamaha, taking second place. In third place was Craig Holasek on his KTM. The Huntersville Enduro is the perfect event for the season’s first enduro. The trails offer up a nice challenge, yet the event is completely rideable by most riders. Everyone seemed quite happy to be back in the saddle

Perfect Weather finds Megacross Mendota, Illinois - June 19 By Jennifer Kenyon Photos by Brett Wilkinson
I
t’s hard to believe that it’s already round six of the Megacross Shootout Series, marking the halfway point in the twelve race series. So far this year we have experienced the brutally cold and the muddy, so it was only a matter of time before we finally experienced the beautiful sunny Megacross that we’re used to seeing, now let’s hope it stays! The track shaped up to be in really great condition after the excess amounts of rainfall the week before. The second main event of the night was the 50cc (4-8) class with seven young riders lining the gate. Radko Tomko captured the holeshot on his KTM followed by Travis Wilkinson. Kevin Huddleston got off to a great holeshot as well with Joshua Tanner right on his heels. Wilkinson was giving Tomko everything he had, showing Tomko his front tire in the every chance possible. In the meantime, Huddleston had his own
third place position to protect as Tanner was closing in hard in the corners. Joe Quest was riding his own race for fourth place. On the last lap, Cody Donna made a pass for sixth on the PW of Samuel Rohling coming out of the finish line corner, only to have the Pee Dub steal the spot right back. Rohling then put it into high gear as he cruised right past Quest over a jump. Quest passed him back in the next corner, claiming the fifth place position with Rohling in sixth and Donna finishing seventh. Tomko finished the moto with a win and Wilkinson, despite a hard effort, finished in second with Huddleston third. The 125cc class brings much excitement as all of the riders are competing on 2 stroke machines, not to mention the diverse field of riders that sign up for the class. Ranging from A riders to C riders, old and young, there is just about every caliber and age in this class. Robbie Hyson captured the holeshot aboard his White Knuckle Powersports Yamaha followed by
Jeremy Beetz was impressive winning Quad A.
Women’s class winner April Roper.
Matt Mellott who put pressure on Hyson early in the moto, but Hyson wasn’t making many mistakes. Tyler Simpkins was right on Kody Smith for the fourth, and with nowhere to go in the corner, hit Smith’s rear tire causing both riders to bobble and lose a position. Hyson and Mellott had their 2 strokes wide open as they battled for the first place spot. Paul Gerke didn’t let the fast boys out of his sight for one minute and as the moto went on Gerke closed the gap on Mellott. Despite all efforts of Mellott, Hyson cruised through the finish for the main event victory; Mellott took second with Gerke in third. Ricki Williams put in a great ride to finish fourth and Kody Smith rounded out the top five. The +40 class saw Steve Perkins shoot off to a great start followed closely by Andy Cole and Larry “The Rev” Dean. Perkins wasted no time getting an early lead on the rest of the pack as he was laying it down on the GP Cyclesports 450. Perkins said, “I was so pumped to get the
holeshot, as you know that’s half the race right there.” The Rev was all over Cole throughout the moto. “I love Megacross,” Dean says, “And the changes in the track are always welcome, it makes it not so familiar- which is a good thing”. Dean made it look as if the track was familiar to him as he pressured Cole hard and on the last lap made his way around for second. Rounding out the top five were riders David Henry and Frank Licastro. Perkins went on to also win the +35, putting in a tremendous night of riding. Catching up with Perkins after his moto he said, “I feel old as dirt and don’t get around as good as I used to, that’s why I ride and not walk!” Adding “I couldn’t do it without my wife Malissa and kids Brooke and Dylan as my pit crew”. The talk of the night was most definitely the A class main events with the new addition of Arenacross stud Kurt McCabe being thrown into the already stacked lineup for both Open A CYCLE USA, July 2010

and 250A. However, Ross Martin quickly showed McCabe and the rest of the pack that he hasn’t gone a perfect season so far for nothing. Venning Motorsports/ SSI Decals/ Fly Racing/ Amsoil/ Ride Extreme backed Martin grabbed the Open A holeshot with the rest of the pack fighting for second place. Martin said, “Starts are a really important part of any race and it really helps knowing you have the best bike possible out there”. McCabe settled in right behind Martin, followed by Max Malatia, Kevin Markwardt and Justin Kelly. On the second lap, Markwardt dove in for a hard pass on Malatia. Meanwhile, McCabe was trying to capitalize on any little mistake Martin made, while also creating his own passing opportunities by taking the outside lines rather than following Martin through the main inside lines. Markwardt was applying much pressure on Malatia for the third spot, so much that he went over the berm, causing Malatia to get away and Kelly to catch up as well. “I was really tired at the end of the race and I lost control for a minute there and went over the berm, luckily Justin didn’t get around me,” Markwardt said after the race. Malatia turned in up in the last couple laps, charging hard to catch up to McCabe. Coming into the last S corner before the finish, Malatia was touching McCabe’s rear tire but McCabe held him off to capture the second. “New competition always puts some kind of twist on things, but I was still pretty
confident going into the main events” said Martin after he swept Open A, 250A, and +25A for the night. One of the last races of the night was the Open B class with nine riders lining the gate. The Honda of Robert Dixon bolted off the gate to capture the main event holeshot, followed by Dade Noones and Cory Catalani. Joshua Stevenson and Denny Morsch were battling back and forth early in the moto as Catalani got hung up in a corner, and both riders went around him. Catalani got back by Stevenson but couldn’t quite get around Morsch for second. Dixon and Noones went side by side over the jump and Noones shot inside in the corner before the tables to take over the lead. Morsch then squared up the corner in order to make his way past Dixon as well, moving into second. Dixon continued to fall back as he quickly got eaten up by Catalani too, putting him back to fourth. Noones claimed the win aboard his Kawasaki, Morsch took second and Catalani finished out with a third. Race against the river Matthews, Indiana - June 6 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck
T
he seventh round of the 2010 D15 series was held at the classic Muddobbers MC grounds with the historic covered bridge in Matthews, In. As was the case with last years race, the river crossings were removed and replaced with extending the course to 6.5 miles of open grass track, tight trails and new terrain. While the river crossings were removed, the riders did have to pass through parts of the Mississinewa River as it continued to rise from the heavy rains and cover parts of the trail. The PeeWee race course was rerouted the morning of the race due to the extremely wet conditions caused by severe storms the night prior to the race. In the PeeWee Injector class, Lance Maschino jumped ahead early and never looked back. In the PeeWee Premix race, Louden Feltner hoped to land a victory, but fell short of Logan White who ran smooth and consistent landing the victory. The mini racers faced a challenging course which was also re-routed the morning of the race. Luke Chilman pulled away from everyone in the SuperMini class and never looked back. Michael Witkowski rode smooth and fast the entire race in the 85cc class, catching some of the SuperMini riders, but never gaining on Chilman. The 65cc race started with Vincent Smith pulling away for another dominating win while the battle for 2nd-3rd was a good one. Dawson Dunnuck and Kayden Young traded places during the first half of the race. Dunnuck would pull away in the woods and Young would make it back up in the grass tracks. Young eventually faded on the last few laps, but landed a well earned place on the top three podium. The big bike course included a unique enduro cross section that contained very large rock gardens, tire crossings and fanned out log crossing turns. These sections as well as the flooded bridge crossing were gathering locations for the large crowd of spectators. Tyler Tischler headed into the first lap of the race with the early lead with Anthony Wagler following close behind. Derek Spangler and Jordan Johns had terrible starts leaving them with the daunting task of working through traffic to get to the front. With Wagler right on Tischler’s back tire during the second lap, it was becoming apparent that he has improved and is meshing with his bike. Meanwhile, Spangler had worked his way through traffic and was attempting to close in on Wagler and Tischler. Near the end of the race, Wagler had faded off the pace and Spangler looked as if he was closing in on Tis12

chler. Unfortunately, Spangler experience a mechanical failure on his bike while passing back under the bridge on his way to the score tent allowing Jordan Johns to assume the number two spot. While the race at the front was exciting, there was an impressive three way battle in the Senior A class. Pat Flynn landed the overall holeshot with Doug Day running mid pack and Robert Williams bringing up the rear. This running order remained unchanged until the last two laps. Williams continued to charge and started attacking the ruts and the corners throughout the track. This allowed him to close right in on Day and Flynn and eventually take over the lead on the next to the last lap. By the time the white flag was shown, Williams and Day had closed in and passed Flynn and where staged for a one lap shoot out. Williams, feeling confident in his riding style, prevailed on the last lap wearing Day down and pulling away for the win. In the end it was a great race up front with the leaders, but it was Tyler Tischler taking the win. n enthusiastic 174 entries competed on the Goshen Iron Horseman hill, with Chris Huizenga setting the overall fast time of the day. Not easily, as he had to come from last place in the first round, having crashed at 53 feet on his first ride. But on his second ride he landed his KX500 cleanly off the starting line jump and shot over the top in a sizzling 3.906 seconds to take the 600cc class win, and set Fast Time of the Day. He was the only rider all day to break into the three second bracket. Josh Shoup was second in 4.117 seconds with Danny Schumann third. Andy Fortner was the only double class winner, claiming wins in the Senior (+40) and 400cc Stock classes. His first round ride of 4.206 seconds on his CR500 in the Senior class held up all day for that win, ahead of District 15 Hill Climb Referee Scotty Petty, who stopped the clock in 4.491 seconds on his Honda. William Whipple was third. Fortner had to come from behind to win the 400cc Stock class on his CR250, as his 5.705 second first round ride had him in third place at the break, behind Steve Laughlin and
Marshall Dillon. He pinned his throttle on his second round, however, made a good jump and landing off the start and flew over the top in 5.391 seconds to take the win, with Laughlin and Dillon second and third. Ryan Garriott took one ride to win the 2Stroke Quad class with a good 5.187 second time, with his brother Wade running second and Evan Zimmerman third. Clint Garriott topped the hill in 7.091 seconds on his first ride on his KX65 to win the 65cc class, with Joey Howard II claiming second and Andrew Fortner third. Cole Garriott was the fast in the 85Jr class with a fine 6.343 second run on his CR85. Eathen Bartenback was second. In other Youth action, Trevor Lake blazed over the top in 5.888 seconds to win the 85Sr class, and also set the Youth Fast Time of the day. Justin Griffin and Dillon Whipple filled the next two spots. Cody Miller was the best in the 50cc class with an 8.290 second time on his KTM50, followed by Colby Stephenson and Cline Garriott. acing in the Twins/Vintage class was three generations of the Murre family. Barry Murre Sr. the eldest, Barry Murre Jr. and Dan Murre, followed by Danny Murre (son of Barry Jr.). This class brought a lot of riders that evening, having to run a semi. Starting of the main with the holeshot was Danny Murre. Battling for the second place spot was Ian Steen and Danny Vrana, before Vrana had to then give up the fight because of bike problems. Catching Murre was Steen. They ran hard all the way to the finish line, where Murre came out with the win just ahead of Steen. Starting out the 50cc Shaft class was Caden Demaa with the holeshot. Following close behind was Sam Mayer, and he eventually got around Demaa, to take the lead. Coming up to challenge Demaa next was Emmett Sund. After battling it out for a bit, Sund took the second place spot. Coming around for the checkered flag was Mayer, followed by Sund, Demaa, Jahnke, and Callies. To celebrate his first ever win, Mayer took a lap with the checkered flag. There was a good turn out of riders in the 450 Pro class. With the holeshot was Brock Schwarzenbacher followed by Kyle Weise and Eric Mischler. It took Mischler a while, but he finally found his way into second, having got by Weise. Bringing the Heat at Tigerton
Sam Long in the A class
Tigerton, Wisconsin - May 23 By Pete Emme
W
ith temperatures hovering in the 90’s most of the day, the heat was hot and heavy as was the action during round two of the Northern Cup Motocross Series in Tigerton. Its only the middle of May and to see high temps in the 90s in north central Wisconsin is a rarity. It didn’t stop nearly 270 entries as they tackled the rough and tough sandy terrain at the MotoZone. The facility made some more rider friendly improvements to the track since its last race, taming down the DeNoble’s Domain leap, adding some berms, and creating a Talledega type turn with about fifteen seconds added to each lap. The improvements were very well liked and the track stayed in primo condition throughout the day. In 250A action, it was the Motosports Factory KTM of Sam Long starting on the far outside gate to nab the first moto holeshot just ahead of fast Yamaha rider of Dustin Pulley. Long led the pack through the early stages of the race as Pulley pulled alongside in the camelsback but couldn’t make a pass, but within the end of the lap, Pulley had taken the lead. Marshall Maas was being hounded by Dylan Narel through the first two laps and finally succumbed to the Honda rider as Maas fell to fourth. Pulley got the win ahead of Long and Narel. The second moto had Pulley out front once again with about a five second lead over 16 CYCLE USA, July 2010
Long and the finish was a carbon copy of the first moto with Pulley taking the win. Fast racing action was indeed in the 250B division as some of Wisconsin’s finest young riders were showing everyone what the future will be like. Aaron Remter had his front tire to the corner first in the sixteen rider field. Sitting right behind was the Neillsville native Bryce Backaus with two stroke rider Justis Heckendorf in third. Zack Masch was just outside the top five and working his way to the leaders. Backaus had his YZ250F tapped through the sand whoops and into the lead over Remter as Masch moved into third. Within the first lap, the sneaky and meticulous Masch had his sights set on Heckendorf, reminiscent of the old days when their Dads used to compete against each other. Masch was now in the runner-up spot displacing Heckendorf and breathing down the back of Backaus. With two laps remaining, Backaus seemed to get in and out of the corners faster than Masch. The two leaders began to run into lappers by the final lap but it wasn’t enough as Backaus took the win. “I spun on the gate really bad and I came into the first turn and I kind of slid out but then I put my head down and then got around Remter and I tried to catch 497 (Backaus) and I just couldn’t make the pass,” said Masch. “I was third going into the corner and then I was squeezed out by 616 (Heckendorf) but I got him on the outside of the big sweeper and I got into the lead. I felt someone come up on me,” said Backaus. “He was charging
the corners harder but I got through them faster and I stayed in the lead.” The second moto had newcomer Justin Wolf out in the lead aboard his Sportland 2 Kawasaki with a pack of hungry wolves behind him. Masch used the inside lane and hit the plateau on the outside skipping the single after to gain some valuable ground moving into second. Backaus was behind Heckendorf through the sand whoops in fourth. As they entered the first big double, Wolf left the door open as Masch cleaned out his front wheel inadvertently. Wolf remounted quickly but was too far out of contention. Masch pushed hard on the first two laps to gain some ground as Backaus was hounding Heckendorf but couldn’t make a pass. Heckendorf stayed strong and steady throughout the moto and took home second. Masch took the win going 2-1 while Backaus settled for second with a 1-3. “I got a good start and I made my way around some guys and then I put my head down to stay ahead of Backaus and finished in second,” Heckendorf said. In 250C it was the Eagle River rider Shane Scott moving into the lead aboard his trusty Yamaha. He was hounded by Caleb Kofler and then they ran into some trouble handing the lead over to Derek Busse. Busse took the lead but looked uncomfortable with Aaron Horack breathing down his neck. The race was on, and Shane Scott emerged as the leader as they came back around the back side of the track. Busse fell off pace as Scott took the lead with Horack in tow. Moving into the third spot was Tyler Klos on his Kawasaki. Scott scooted to the win with Horack in a distant second with Klos in third. “During the holeshot, I kind of got caught up in the muddy section and then I kind of stayed in third over the big jump and then I took over from there,” said Scott. The second moto had Klos moving into the lead ahead of Busse and Scott. Klos had held a steady lead and never looked back as he rode diligently to first place for second overall. Taking the overall was Scott with his 1-2 scores. The Women’s class had the KTM of Andrea Walsdorf taking the first moto win ahead an eager group. Walsdorf was being hounded towards the end of the race by Yamaha rider Brittany Lemke, both girls were doing the De-
Noble’s Domain Jump. Walsdorf seemed extremely tired after only having a two moto break in between her running 250C and the Women’s class. Walsdorf hung well with the boys finishing a very respectable sixth overall with 7-7 tallies in the C class. Job well done. Falen Narel got into the lead early in the second moto with Lemke moving into second, setting her sights on the leader. Walsdorf wheelied off the gate to move into the third spot and eventually jumping her way into second. Walsdorf soon dropped out of the moto with an apparent injury letting Lemke move into second. Soon after, Narel was overtaken by Lemke and she ran all the way to the finish taking the moto win and the overall with 2-1 scores. Finishing in second was Ashley Densow with 4-2 #112 DJ Gritzmacher getting the start in 50Sr. scores with Narel fourth with 3-4. Dillon Kau used strong starts in “The track was really good, I got a great the Sportsmen B/C class aboard his brand start and pulled away early on, all on a brand new KTM. Kau held Bryce Backaus off for new bike that hasn’t been raced yet,” said the moto and took the win. Ben Cropsey finKau. ished a strong third just ahead of Marcus MarKau led the way in the second moto takkee and Cody Ciszewski. ing the back to back win. Cropsey went 3-3 for second overall. Backaus who had finished in the second spot in the first moto, took a DNF in the second moto. Open A had front runner Dustin Pulley taking the first moto win but in the second moto it was the borrowed bike that had Nathen LaPorte on top moving out to the lead and taking the second moto win and the overall with 2-1 tallies. “My 250 two stroke blew up this past week and I couldn’t muster up enough parts to get it going for this weekend so I borrowed Lyle Block’s KX450F and he set me up on it yesterday and dialed it in to my liking and it worked well out there today,” LaPorte said. “I knew Pulley was behind me and knew he was going to push me but I kept taking good lines and got Michael Namowicz the win,” said LaPorte. charging to fourth overall in Vet B.

avin Faith put forth a masterful effort at the Spring Creek facility over the Memorial Day weekend, taking home overall wins in the 250 and Open A classes on both Sunday and Monday. It was no small feat as many of the fastest local riders were on hand, such as Brandon Haas and Nick Jackson, along with arenacross specialist Chad Johnson. A huge turnout out Sunday made for an action packed day as over 800 entries tussled with the twisty Spring Creek track. Monday had a drop in entries as some headed home early, maybe thinking that the rain on Sunday night would leave the track a mudder but precip was light and it was a great day of racing. Lots of out-ofstate riders were on hand to tune up for the North Central Youth Regional scheduled for the following weekend. Even the prodigal Jeremy Martin made an appearance after spending time in Texas. On Sunday, the 65cc 10-11 class was the second to take to the track and Caleb Self surged out to the early lead. He found Chase Sexton ready to challenge and the two circulated out front while putting distance on third place Alex Ransom. Sexton wrested the lead away on lap two and went on for the win although Self didn’t drop too far back by the flag. Ransom held on for third despite pressure from Trey Moore near the end of the moto. Sexton led all the way in moto two while Self didn’t start after a DNF in another class. Sexton went on for a solid ten second gap over Moore at the checkered. Ransom and Brandon Holmes took third and fourth a bit farther back while Luke Hempen improved on his firstmoto ninth by grabbing fifth this time out. Jace Owen jumped out to lead early in moto one of the Schoolboy 12-16 class but made a mistake and dropped back on lap two. Shane Rhode took over for a lap but Keaton Ward was on
the move and displaced him shortly. Ward went on for a win with some cushion over a battle behind as Brady Rhode was trying to hold off Owen. Cory Breeden held on to fourth with Shane Rhode on his tail. Ward led the majority of moto two with Owen hounding him until the last lap when Owen made a successful bid for the lead to take the flag first. Tyler Skodras nailed down third for a big improvement over his first moto sixteenth. Derrick Boyd and Shane Rhode rounded out the top five. Jake Loberg and Brandon Haas went at it in moto one of the 16-24A class. They had a stellar battle for the first half of the race but Loberg unfortunately stalled and dropped into field whilst refiring. Haas cruised in for an easy win. Trevor Tuma and Nick Jackson trailed him in with Loberg recovering for fourth. Haas led early and steadily for the entire second moto. Tuma ran a respectable race for second considering limited seat time this year held on over a closing Jackson at the end. Loberg bobbled early in the moto but recovered to fourth again over Cody Thomsen. On Monday, checking out the action on the Mighty Miniturized Motocross track, we found intense competition in the 50cc Oil Injected 4-8 class. Torsten Strom and Alex Riley were hammering at each other throughout the first moto but the victory went to Strom. Jake Luloff and Carter Vanelsen ran 34. Moto two featured Riley out front for the first half of the race but Strom took over from there to secure the overall. Cory Klemenhagen snared third over Luloff this time out. Back to the full size track, the adventure continued with the +30A class. Ben Graves snared a holeshot with his two stroker and held on for a lap before the elderly Bruce Gates motored into the lead. Gates is quite adept at riding with the kids even though he probably is closing in on 50

years old. At the flag Gates took the win over Mike Luoma and Graves while Tim Zebro ran fairly close for fourth. Gates led early in moto two but then pulled off halfway through the moto with unknown problems. Zebro inherited the lead and took good advantage of it to win the moto and snare the overall. Graves held a strong second and there was a battle to the end with Luoma, Kiel Bormann and Shannon Bakken duking it out to 3-4-5 results. Open A class action featured some strong rides from Gavin Faith as he led early and eased away from the battling duo of Chad Johnson and Brandon Haas in both motos. Johnson led Haas all the way in moto one as they ran 2-3 and finished ahead of Nick Jackson. In moto two they were running in the opposite order and it appeared Haas might get the better of Johnson, but a flat tire late in the race dropped Haas from his pace and he had to limp it in for third. Summer arrives at Southfork Taylorville, Illinois - May 23 By James Pinckard
S
ummer said “IM HERE!” with what has been a cool damp spring, on this day temps were in the mid 90’s. The crew did a great job on the track and all day had a great racing surface making for some hot racing as well. Leroy reminded everyone that this year Southfork will again host the Midwest Best Series, Ponca City Qualifier, and the FCA camp with Andrew Short, The Sipes brothers, and others spending the week with the riders as well as the FCA motocross race. The 250B class was on fire! In the first moto Suzuki rider Zach Corman took the holeshot and put in a hot lap before Kawasaki rider Blake Copeland moved into the lead to eventually take the moto win. Next on Corman was Kawasaki rider Ben Elson who put in a great ride take second. After the new section, Corman went down in a corner and Chris Brauch took third for the moto. After the race Corman said, “I have not been able to ride much this year and this is my first race of the year”. In the second moto Elson was on a mission and charging 100 percent for the whole moto with Copeland all over him, shadowing his every move. At the end Elson took the win and overall. Copeland took second as third went to Brauch, after another fight from Corman. Motocross is a family sport and for 2010 Southfork welcomed back the Culp family. With Dad, Ed Culp racing +30 he said “I’m glad to be back at the track with the boys, this is just a great sport to be involved in.” The Ed Culp and his son Carson.

oldest son Carson went to the line for his first time ever on a 65. In the 65Sr class Suzuki rider Jacob Lancaster put the hammer down taking the first moto win. Bryton McDonald finished second with Suzuki rider Jeff Cobb third. Hard luck came to Noah Watts who was riding well only to have his bike break, taking him out of the moto. Culp finished fifth. In the second moto Lancaster again took the pole and the moto win. This moto Watts was on the gas taking second. Third went to Cobb giving him second overall. Third overall went to McDonald. Mr. Culp finished fifth, pretty darn good for his first time out. Cade Culp went to the line for his first time ever in the 50Jr class. In the first moto Edgar Lewis was flying, taking the moto win. Dalton Gunterman finished second with Culp third. In the second moto Lewis as again on the gas and took the moto win and overall. Gunterman finished second for the moto and overall. Culp made his way around the track without trouble and finished third. Break out your bikes, load the family and head to the track for a great time. Summer won’t last forever! See ya there!

Akeley Enduro a winner Akeley, Minnesota - June 13 By Michael C. Pohl
T
he Paul Bunyan State Forest near Akeley, Minnesota was home to over 200 enduro riders on Sunday, June 13th. Norseman M/C Trail Boss Rex Greenwald and his crew of Norsemen offered up 62 miles of widely-varied trails. The amount of new single-track added by Norsemen Bob Swift, Brian Grote, Jerry Morgan and Giles Radtke, among others, really made this a special day
in the woods. (this author rode the event) The Norseman introduced a welcome innovation to take the intimidation out of time keeping: The Mentor Program. Riders could be paired on the same minute with a Mentor who would help them with time keeping during the event. It was a smashing success. And it wasn’t just newbie’s who took up the offer for help. Several “A” hare Scrambles riders, who typically stay away from time keeping enduros rode the course with mentors. Rex Greenwald said the idea was to expand the field to its fullest possible, as part of the Norseman Super Series. At the end of the
year a drawing will be held at the Norseman’s Trollhagen Hare Scrambles to win a brand new Yamaha YZ250F, tricked out for the trails by Hyde Racing and Larson’s Cycle. This year’s Akeley West had the feel of a classic enduro. It was a very challenging ride for most riders. Yet, it wasn’t a torture test, either. It was simply a good, tough, enduro. Rain had fallen all week and it drizzled on and off throughout the day of the event. Goggles were cleaned at every reset. Riders often rode with them hanging around their necks. Akeley’s soil absorbed most of the rain. Slick, greasy spots appeared only occasionally. Nevertheless, the moist terrain required the rider’s full attention all day. Damp

rocks, roots and downed trees meant if you lost concentration, you were off the trail in a heartbeat, and many of us were. The physically demanding ride, combined with the stress on the equipment, took its toll; about 1/3 of the riders did not make it to the last of the ten checks. Equipment took a beating. Fast guys Dylan Debel and Tim Nienow both retired early, with broken bikes. One third of the AA riders retired due to mechanical issues. Nate Ferderer took the overall win, losing just 27 points. Craig Holasek lost 4 minutes to the blazing young-gun Ferderer on the first five checks, but ran minute-for-minute with him the rest of the day. Both riders
looked fresh, strong and very fast at the finish. Todd Mathwig took third place. A pleasant surprise was overall C class winner, Chad Tupper. He pulled a score of 60. D15 Amateur Championship Rochester, Indiana - June 20 By Bobby Elkins Photos by Phyllis Blume
T
he 3rd Annual District 15 Midwest Amateur Championship was held at D&D Motorsports this year. The turnout was better than last years championship at Sweet 16 MX, which was also presented by Reads Racing. The weather was also a whole lot nicer than the previous year. Weather may have been a contributing factor, but I think D&D is just more suitable for all riders. It's not filled with big jumps and triples. It's a track anyone can enjoy. And come and enjoy they did. Riders who I hadn't seen in a long time seemed to be everywhere. In the +30A, Nicholas Jones out of North Manchester, IN made a cameo appearance, and made quick work of Terry Strunk of Windfall in moto one, but got out of shape in some sand whoops in moto two handing Terry the win and overall. In Women’s 85-250cc, Cady "The Lady" Pressler of Columbia City who just pulled a 1-
1-1 at the Regionals, also had some trouble near that section. Cady said she felt like her bike just lost steam coming out of the whoops. She landed on top of the step-over, but crossed up just enough to toss her off the seat and into her bars. Ouch! Meghan Jordan out of Kentland, IN rode around the spill, but wasn't thrilled at taking a win that way. Meghan is another one of many riders I was happy to see at the championship. Cady was under her own power leaving the raceway but DNF'd the moto. She would return in moto two, ride hard, smarter, and took no chances especially with the Nationals around the corner. Cady took the win in moto as Meghan took home the win with a 2-1. As Reads Racing and District 15 riders, we should all encourage Cady to take it as far as she can. In 250B, Jeffrey Henson of North Manchester, IN came out of the woods in the lead followed by Cady Pressler and Braxton Grose from Warsaw. Henson is another one that can ride D&D in his sleep. Pressler looked great for a couple laps but dropped it
Terry Strunk (2-1) leads +40 class overall winner Michael Warmoth (2-1).
Megan Jordan went 1-2 for the Women’s 85-250cc class win.
midway thru the race. Grose began feeling heat from Chase Daugherty near the midway point and sent Grose back to third where he would finish. Henson has been racing since he was legally able to do so, and he's starting to look that way after suffering plenty in the past. I am gonna say it, "he's the new hot young gun to start watchin'". I really want to mention Michael Wesselman from Bargersville, IN. though. Micheal ran a 7-3 for fifth overall. I am assuming he was either full of Red Bull or is beginning to realize he can do well. Joshua Ball of Elwood, IN went 5-4 for third overall and Dillon Ramey of Unionville pulled a 4-5 for fourth overall. In the +50 class it was Charles Nice out of Indianapolis showing the others the fast way around the track. District 15 Rep. Jerry Barber, of North Vernon, IN, Bob Lewis and Art Kreykes of Lansing, IL rounded out the field. Great Scott! Jerry Barber! This really was a reunion. Barber is old school and has been a Dis-
trict rider from way back. I mean way-way back. You kids outta know this, Barber used to be a pretty fast cat. It was nice to see him out there and looking good at the same time. Nice was in another area code most of the race though. Barber, Lewis and Kreykes were tight at the start and kept it that way throughout in both their outings. Lewis got the best of Barber in moto one, but Barber had a new plan for himself in moto two and finished second. Nice went 1-1, while Jerry took second overall by not showing his hand to quickly and just plain wearing out his competition. They all did a fine job of gettin' around the track well enough, and even did some whoopin' on a few +30B riders. Outstanding performances gentlemen! In 50cc 4-6, Paden Hudson of Anderson, IN grabbed the holeshot in the first moto but got a little excited and took himself out before the end of one. Preston Barngrover took over the first place ride and never looked back. And never looked better. CYCLE USA, July 2010

Ryan Bladecki working to fend off Ryan Klotz in Quad A.
The sand agrees with him and his style. I was thinkin' while watchin' him, "this kid needs a nickname!". He's a plastic to plastic rider who
uses all the bike when it suits him. Hudson's mistake may have sent him to the back of the field, but he rode at break-neck speeds to return to the pack and managed to finish second, putting himself back in position to win the overall. In moto two Barngrover took the early lead. Hudson was right there with Barngrover for a couple laps, but it turned out that Barngrover was just making smarter decisions in the loamy stuff while Hudson insisted in making his own rules. At D&D, the sand is your friend, but it can never be tamed. The outstanding rider award should go to Mike Warmouth of Thorntown, IN. Mike won +40 and +30B with only a small bump in his attempts of taking home 1-1's in both. In +40 Terry Strunk kept him humble by defeating him in moto one, but Warmouth just looked a whole lot more comfortable in moto two and took the win and overall. He had to work for it, Strunk doesn't just give away races. Strunk went 1-2 for second. In the +30B Warmouth walked away with a 1-1. 65cc 10-11 and 85cc 9-11 rider Chandler Pitts of Peru, IN pulled a Warmouth by going 2-1 on his 85 Chandler Pitts in the 65cc 10-11 class. and 1-1 on his 65. Kraye Loft from

Lafayette finished behind him in both outings on the 65, but on his 85, Kraye was the “1” in Chandler's bid to go 1-1 in moto one. Kraye crossed the stripe just one bike length ahead on the 85, which was enough to send Chandler into orbit. Upset and angry Chandler gassed it after the stripe, after the checkers, after the race and took a soil sample right in front of me. I'd also just like to mention it was real nice seeing Quad A rider Dave DeMatteo back on his steed. I was cheated out of a great battle. Dave konked out on lap one in moto one and would never return. The worst. I’m sure he was disappointed. I walked right by him on the track where he sat broke and got a smile and a shake of the head. Great attitude, great rider! I also saw ex Pace Supercross Media Rep Ryan Marshall from Richmond, IN on the surface too. He showed he can still get it done when it matters. Ryan went 6-5 in the +40. The last moto of the day was the Super Mini and the Schoolboy 2. Dakota Robins kept the fans at the fence in Super Mini with his freestyle type whips as he went 1-1 while catching lappers. In the Schoolboy 2, James Cooper of Indianapolis had to come thru Jake Truax of Crawsfordsville and Levi Johnson in both motos for a 1-1. In their first moto, Levi got the holeshot and James attention when he railed a sandy berm early in the moto and gave him a face full. That little spray told him
he better get down to business. It didn't take long. James poured on the power and took the lead at the end of one. Levi was forced to ride just a bit faster than he may have wanted to, but what it did was create a whole lot of real estate between the himself and Jake in third. Levi went 2-3, while Jake started better in moto two and decided he'd like to test James speed. It was faster, but not by a lot. Jake would go 3-2 for second overall and Levi scored third overall in the championship. Halbert steals show at Decatur Macon County Fair Grounds Decatur, Illinois - June 17 By James Pinckard
H
ot dogs, funnel cakes, carnival rides and Flat Track racing could all be found at the 2010 Macon County fair. The American All Star Flat Track Series presented by Steve Nace Promotions was the first time in thirteen years motorcycles raced in Decatur. With the grand stands full, the spectators were not disappointed as these hot shoes charged around the track to the roar of the crowd. Tonight the crowd favorite had to be multi-national champ Chris Carr, but with all the great riders no matter who your favorite was, you were in for a great show. In the Pro Singles, Yamaha rider Jeffrey Carver had things under control for the first heat win with Honda rider Michael Avila second and Zack Cassidy third. In the second heat the number one Honda of Brad Baker took the win with Kenny Malaguamero second and Yamaha rider Rick Ivey third. In the Main the race was on with Baker setting some fast lap times, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the charge of Carver who laid down expert level style and speed to take the win. Baker finished a strong second with Malaguamero third. In the Expert Singles three heats set the field for the main. In the first heat, Yamaha rider Rob Pearson took the win with Brock Schwarzenbacher second. In the second heat it was what the crowd was waiting for as Honda rider Chris Carr took the win. Yamaha rider Jethro Halbert finished second. In the third heat Sam Halbert laid down the fastest time with Jared Mees second. In the main, Sam Halbert took the lead and never looked back to see the battle behind him between Jethro Halbert and Jared Mees. At the flag Sam took the win with his brother Jethro sec30

ond Mees third. Chris Carr finished fourth. Sam said, “It’s great to be up here and even better with my brother.” Everyone was on the edge of their seats as the Expert Twin class thundered to life. These are the big dogs of flat track racing, and when these dogs bark people listen! In the first heat Harley Davidson rider Sam Halbert picked up where he left off in the Singles and took the heat win over Harley Davidson riders Chris Carr and Brandon Bergen. In the second heat National Champ Jared Mees showed why he has the #1 on his bike, and took the win. Bryan Smith took second with Jethro Halbert third. In the third heat Harley Davidson rider Rob Pearson took the win with Matthew Weidman second and rounding out the Harley Davidson sweep of the heat is the fastest lady in Flat track racing, Nichole Cheza. In the main all the major players were out front, including Mees, Carr, and Sam Halbert. They say every dog has his day and today belonged to Sam Halbert. Fresh off his Singles win the #7 Harley was flat out flying to take the win with Mees second and Carr third. As Halbert was taking his victory lap Carr said “Thank you for coming out and supporting us. Tonight I just could not beat these young kids.” Mees said, “This is a great event and series, and I hope we come back again.” I have to agree, and hope to see racing back again at the Macon County Fair. Mees claims Dairyland Classic win Plymouth, Wisconsin - June 4 By Bert Sumner Photos by Pete Emme
J
ared Mees of Clio, Michigan claimed his second consecutive Dairyland Classic crown on Friday night with a come-frombehind ride to best Joe Kopp of Mica, Washington and defending AMA National Singles Champion Henry Wiles of Michigan in the twenty lap 450cc Professional Division final at the Sheboygan County Fair Park. Thirty-one professional racers from ten states comprised the most star-studded field in Dairyland Classic history - five riders represented thirteen AMA Grand National Championships between them. Kopp, the 2002 Dairyland winner, clocked in the fastest qualifying lap at 17.252 sec (69.557 mph), with Mike Avila (California), Mees, Rob Pearson (Morton, Illinois), and Wiles rounding out the top five. All thirty-one pros qualified within ¾ of one second of each other on the third mile clay oval. Three-time AMA Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth (‘03 & ‘08 Dairyland champ) claimed the fastest heat race win and thereby earned the pole position for the main event. Jethro Halbert (Washington) and Mees won the other two heat races, while Matt Weidman (New York), seven-time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr (Pennsylvania) and Pearson won the three semi-finals. Kopp sliced through the field to win the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash for Cash, over Wiles and Pearson. Kopp had a back-row start for the Main event, and felt he had found a chassis set-up that would allow him to slice through the field again. Coolbeth squandered his pole position with a terrible start in the final, finishing the first lap in sixth. Wiles grabbed the early lead on the National #1-plated Kawasaki with Halbert hot on his tail. Mees started in fifth, but muscled his way into third by lap two, and began hounding Halbert, working past on lap four. Four laps later Mees passed Wiles en-

tering turn three and immediately began to stretch a big lead. Kopp, meanwhile, was indeed slicing through the field. He started in tenth, completed the first lap in seventh, and moved into the number four slot on lap seven. Two laps later he made a big move around the outside and passed both Halbert and Wiles for the runner-up spot. As if sensing the challenge now that Kopp was in second, Mees put together a handful of stellar laps to pull even further ahead, scoring a comfortable win at the finish. Coolbeth recovered to snatch fourth place on the last lap from Halbert. The professional riders loaded up and headed to an AMA Grand National event in Indiana Saturday night. Terry Vestal borrowed Dan Vrana’s 2009 Vintage-winning Triumph T140 and powered to a hard-fought victory in the Vintage Division. Lee Johnson (‘79 Yamaha TT500) and Vrana (‘68 HarleyDavidson KR) fought back and forth throughout for the runner-up spot, but were unable to unseat Vestal for the win. Dan Murre (‘76 Yamaha XS650) overcame a poor start to claim the fourth spot at the flag over Louie Lauters (‘77 Yamaha XS650) and Mark Muth (‘80 HarleyDavidson XR750). Soren LeValley,
Trey Johnson, and Lexi Hoffman claimed the three 250cc Amateur division heat races, with Hoffman’s time earning her the pole position for the main event. Johnson, the 2008 250cc Amateur winner, grabbed the holeshot in the final and never looked back. Dave Kilkenny held the runner-up spot until the mid-way flags when he succumbed to the charges of both Nikki Spore and Hoffman. Charlotte Kainz claimed the 85cc Youth heat race win and appeared set to claim her unprecedented third division win in a row, Dairyland, continued on page 35

Brandel, Conis shine at Fun Valley Montezuma, Iowa - May 30/ 31 By Mark D. Bonnell Photos by Missi Thede
M
ay in Iowa has always been one of the best months for racing. The weather has usually has settled down, the riders have had the chance to shake off the early season jitters and are up to speed and very competitive. Fun Valley Moto X had the pleasure of holding a two day event on the last weekend of the month. As expected, the Fun Valley crew provided a race course that was ready for both the bike and quad racers to enjoy. The 16-24B/C class proved to be a great one to watch on Saturday with very dissimilar results in both exciting motos. Dalton Brandel, Riley Christie, Dylan Busby and Jacob Harnish all had good starts, but it was Brandel who was most willing to hold the throttle on the longest and come away with the lead at the top of the hill. At the end of the first lap, Brandel was in the lead with Wyatt Setterburg close behind.
Kyle Diemer was next over the finish line jump with Mick Hesse, Ryan Christie, and Riley Christie doing their best to stay in the top five. On lap two, Setterburg slid out in a corner and ended up on the ground. This allowed Brandel to breathe a little easier as he slowly pulled away from the rest of the field. Hesse, who was in second after the second lap, was getting pressure from Ryan and Riley Christie as lap three neared an end. At the end of the lap both Ryan Christie had managed to put himself into second place. Riley managed to get past Hesse for third shortly after. Harnish rounded out the top five. On lap four Ryan Christie bobbled in the upper section of the track. This allowed Riley Christie to take over second place with Hesse now in third. Busby was now running in fifth just behind Ryan Christie. At the end of the moto it was Brandel with a responding win ahead of Riley Christie. Hesse, who was less than a second behind seemed to be riding much faster at the end of the

moto. Ryan Christie crossed the line in fourth. Harnish managed to get around Busby to take fifth. Brandel was again able to start out front in the second moto. Several riders got together in the left hand corner at the bottom of the hill. Riley Christie and Busby and a couple of others ended up on the ground. Setterburg looked as if he might have been able to catch Brandel as the two completed the first lap. Diemer, Ryan Christie and Harnish rounded out the top five. The riders stayed in the same order for the remainder of the race. Brandel was the winner for the day with his wins in both
motos. Ryan Christie’s 4-4 finish was good enough for second for the day proving that consistency can result in a strong finish. Setterburg’s 7-2 finish earned him third. In the 250C class, Chase Conis proved that he could get the start he needed, but also stay out front. Conis managed to lead both 250C class motos from start to finish. Ethan Trumble also had an excellent day, managing to work his way into second place by the end of both motos. James Goss made Trumble work for both of his second place finishes by getting along side of Trumble several times around the

lex Mclean put on his race face Saturday morning and kept it on all weekend, winning six races and taking a second and third place to become the winningest racer at the Road America Vintage Motorcycle Classic, AHRMA races. Mclean, of Brookeville, Maryland rode to victories aboard a pair of Nortons (1937 and 1961) and a 2005 Honda in Pre 1940, Cass C Foot Shift, Classic Sixties and Sound of Singles Two Stroke classes. Damp weather greeted the early arrivals at Road America. Gloomy skies and rain hampered the Friday practice rounds all day. Very few riders actually took to the track in the poor conditions. Saturday brought out more intermittent drizzle leaving riders guessing on traction in each corner every race. he reports came in early in the week that the track conditions were perfect and as a result, communications went out to riders. The courses were arrowed and bannered with all the preparations complete, and then the skies opened up Friday night. The storms that passed through the area dumped almost 2.5 inches of rain on the track and parking area. The promoter, Danny Davis was prepared and had significant help to reroute sections with standing water and re-banner other areas. The PeeWee race course covers both grass tracks and tight hilly woods that challenges young riders. The riders were all given the pre-race parade lap to allow them one last chance to pull out of the race. All nine PeeWee racers opted to stay in and
take a shot at a win. Camden Feltner had an excellent race landing that PreMix victory over a hard charging Colton Beavers. Lance Maschino came from a terrible race the previous week to landing back on top again in the Injector class. With the exception of only two minor sections, the mini racers face the same course as the big bikes. GNCC youth standout Austin Lee showed up to challenge for both the 85cc and overall youth wins. While Luke Chilman would be starting in the Super Mini class, he had no intention of letting Lee take the bragging rights to an overall victory. Chilman appeared to be on a mission from the second the shotgun fired, riding a near mistake free race. In the 85cc class, Michael Witkowski also had no intention of Allowing Lee and easy win. While Lee was leading the class, Witkowski remained glued to his wheel
throughout the race. Late in the race, Lee had problems allowing Witkowski to capitalize and take the win. All but two 65cc racers, Vincent Smith and Dawson Dunnuck, took off when the report of the shot gun was heard. The two of them sat on the line frantically kicking their bikes hoping they would start. The bikes eventually started and off they went. Smith’s performance was impressive as he had worked through the entire class by the time he reached the telephone pole crossing. He continued on pace and completed all three laps landing the class win. In the big bike race, Nathan Sullivan set the pace early - leading the pack through the checkpoint on the first lap with a 19:37 lap time. Following close behind were Zachary Nash and Jake Fiddler separated by 0:02. Tyler Tischler was looking good cruising through the checkpoint with only 0:14 separating him and Daniel Sims riding in the number five
position. At the end of lap two, Sullivan still had the lead, continuing to set the pace on the track. Coming in second was Fiddler. Nash kept a cool head and staked a claim on third. Tischler held fourth as Sims was already feeling the heat and length of the race, but blew through the chutes in the number five spot. We had a new leader at the end of lap four, with Fiddler taking the lead away from Sullivan. Nash headed into the white flag lap in third place - behind by 2:33. With Tischler out due to a smashed pipe, Sims had moved into fourth with Jordan Johns rounding out the top five. At the checkered flag, Fiddler was still in the lead. f you’re reading this magazine, that most likely means that you’re in some way an affiliated member of an AMA district right here in the Midwest; and as a Midwest motorcycle rider, you all understand the adverse weather conditions that we’ve been battling lately... and frankly, it’s unacceptable. Luckily we have motivated track owners that work hard to ensure that we as riders get the opportunity to ride and race as much as we possibly can in between thunderstorms and downpours. If you were anything like me, Saturday consisted of watching hopelessly out the window as the rain hammered down, causing open practice to be cancelled for the day. Some riders even reported seeing lightening touch down just feet from their campers in the Sunset Ridge pit area, such troopers they were! But by Sunday morning the green flag was waving as riders from all over the area came out to enjoy some racing action at Sunset Ridge MX for the Ponca Qualifier, or at least until the rain set in yet again. The beginning of practice was a little on the muddy side after the large amount of rain the night before, but by the time the first moto came around the track was in mint condition. There was talk of an enormous storm rolling through by mid afternoon so the Sunset crew did a great job of moving through the first set of motos as quickly as possible. Twenty riders lined the gate for the first moto of 250B. Zach Scott of DeKalb, Illinois captured the holeshot aboard his Yamaha, but Reese Miller immediately cut inside in the first corner, stealing the lead away. Ryan Verachtert got off to a great start on his Open Air

Kawasaki, settling in behind Scott for third place as Brandon Brill and Derrick Boyd battled close behind. By the second lap, Miller had put distance between himself and Scott, putting in a phenomenal first moto on his Open Air/ SPM Racing Kawasaki 250F. “The track was really good today; I got a good holeshot behind Zack and got around him pretty quick then just rode my own race,” Miller said after his moto. Verachtert spent the entire moto chasing Scott, finally putting some pressure on him as the white flag set out. Ty Tyrrell got a great holeshot behind Kelly and Corman and kept the pressure on Kelly for the first few laps. Andrew “Hammer” Tyrrell, the older brother of Ty, settled in behind his little brother giving him a run for his money. There must have been some sort of brotherly bet going on because Andrew was pressuring Ty hard, leaving him no room to make a mistake. Corman began to pull away in the middle of the moto but Kelly got a second wind at the end, catching back up to Corman as they made their way through lapped traffic. Tough luck for the youngest Tyrrell brother, as he went down on the last lap allowing Andrew to cruise his way to a well-deserved third place finish behind Corman and Kelly. Tyrrell said after the moto “My front end just washed out coming down the big hill after the triple and I went down”. Ryan Tracy put in a solid ride on his Honda to capture the fourth spot followed by the oldest Tyrrell brother, Tad rounding out the top five. With only a few more races to go until the completion of the first set of motos, Mother Nature decided to come on strong once again as eleven +40 guys lined the gate. Rain had been sprinkling throughout the last

few motos but it was nothing compared to what came down as the gate dropped and the +40 class took to the track. Layton Jones got off to a great start, followed by Anthony Bartemio, Barry Ream and Theron Maring. By the time these riders got to the back section of the track, the rain was coming down so hard that the Sunset Ridge crew was forced to throw out the red flag, causing the moto to be stopped. Lap one leader Layton Jones was so focused on his race that he actually bypassed the red flag and kept on trucking! The rain became a steady downpour paired with thunder and lightning; unfortunately causing the race to be cancelled after only the first set of motos. Although the race got cancelled, most would probably agree that it was well worth it to come out and ride practice and first motos as the track could not have been any better with the previous rain and spectacular track maintenance by Sunset Ridge! Now we just have to look forward to the next event here.
Reese Miller and Neil Borgic finished 1-2 in the Open B class.

Blue Hills Enduro Stone Lake, WI - June 20 By Michael C. Pohl
T
Women B class winner Kristi Grote. Tim Gregory won Sr. B.
he Blue Hills Enduro enjoys a reputation among District 16 and District 23 riders as one of the tougher enduros. The tight, technical, rocky trails stand in stark contrast to the incredibly scenic Summit Lake Game Farm, where the event is staged. The fifty-three miles of single-track (45 miles for C riders) allowed almost no chance to stretch out the legs for bikes or riders. As in the previous five years, every single rider, AA to Novice C was challenged by the trails. For enduro riders who live for a challenge, this place serves it up on a platter. Finish this event and you are in a select fraternity, indeed. As tough as the reputation is, MOTR Trail Boss Mike Ward said attendance was up over 50% from 2009. Perhaps it’s another sign that the economy really is on the mend. Immediately after the start, riders were sent through an infamous section
known as “The Jungle.” A couple miles long, this sinuous super-tight single track trail has seemingly hundreds of narrower than your handlebars spaced-trees. It was a bark-busterbashing-bonzai through what felt like a popple-lined maze. The soil at Stone Lake holds moisture like a sponge. The dampness attaches itself to the rocks, making high speeds treacherous. Up the pace a couple miles an hour, and bikes would deflect into the trees or body-slam the rider to the ground in an instant. Over 25% of riders either DNF’d or hour’d out. And this was a “dry” Stone Lake. Senior B rider Wynne Earlewine summed it up best when he said after the race, “I now know why it’s called “Stone Lake”. AA rider Bob Swift said, “I felt like I was riding a jackhammer all day”. In one spot, Master’s rider Duane Nienow said, “the rocks were all sharp and pointed straight up at my face!” “Just like shark’s teeth”, added another rider. For the third time in a row this year, Nathan Ferderer brought in the lowest score of 13. Craig Holasek was just one point be-
hind Ferderer (who changed a front tire at main gas). Tim Nienow brought up third place with a 16 and Dylan Debel arrived at the finish with 17 points. Just four brief minutes separated these four riders. A regrettable incident occurred during the Mini. A turn caused some confusion on the course, with a group of riders getting lost. Two young lads decided to ask for directions back to the Game Farm. They parked their bikes at the entrance of a driveway and started to walk up to the home. They were greeted by a shotgun-toting man who (allegedly) pumped the gun and The Premier riders before the start. made threatening gestures, telling these 12 mann year olds to “get off his property”. ll everyone thought on Friday as the open practice for Saturday was cancelled because of flooded track sections was NOT AGAIN! The track crew set out early Saturday and went to work drying and then reconstructing the track so the racers on Sunday would see a mint track with a few new twists. Sunday morning came on with a heavy overcast and the feeling that rain was not far away as 577 entries prepared to hit the track. Jake Luginbuhl grabbed the Non-Current holeshot for moto one just ahead of Frank Dunn and Andy Heinecke. On their first trip over the plateau it was Luginbuhl out front with Brandon Marescalco right behind. Heinecke was holding off a charging Mat Herrington for third. Marescalco made his move on in the west end to grab the lead and held on to the finish. On lap three, in the barn section Herrington slipped into third. Luginbuhl repeated the holeshot again in moto two with Herrington right behind this time. The running order stayed Luginbuhl, Marescalco, and Herrington until the end of lap two when Herrington was able to push into the lead. Marescalco quickly made his way out front on lap three and despite constant pushing by Herrington was able to take the win. Luginbuhl later commented, “The track was really nice. I don’t think it has ever been this nice. My holeshots were good. I had a great time on that section right after the start, 46

that whole section all the way to the sand whoops in the back. The dirt was really loamy all day and it was really impressive how good of a job they did here today. I had no idea they were going to do any changes.” Dale Kathan powered his Kawasaki off the line and around the holeshot in front of 250B in moto one with Cody Fredrick close behind. Kathan had a small gap on lap one but Fredrick had Zackary Masch right on his rear fender. As the pack came by the start straight on lap two Kathan was still out front with Masch closing in and Joshua Philbrick now in third place, less than a half bike length in front of Fredrick. By midway through lap two Kathan had Philbrick right on him until they hit the sand in the west end and Philbrick slid into the lead. Masch pushed Kathan for position and moved into second by the barn. Bryce Backus grabbed the moto two holeshot. Philbrick moved into the lead and then Kathan slipped into second on lap three and held off a hard charge by Backus to the checkers. Philbrick went 1/1 to take the overall. It looked like Jeff Ramsay was going to get the moto one +45 holeshot, but he washed his front wheel out leaving the door open for Tim Bares. Bares got passed pretty quickly by Nick Lazzaretto but his lead was short lived. As they hit the plateau on lap one Lazzaretto hesitated and Bares jumped over him for the pass. Gary Behrens was running third with pressure from Dan Hayden. As lap three was ending Lazzaretto found a slit big enough to get by Bares for the lead and he defended to

the checkers. Meanwhile on lap four it was Haydin ahead of Behrens and as they went down the front straight to the Wall jump they were bar to bar. Hayden held on and finished the moto in third with Behrens slipping in right behind. Behrens grabbed the moto two holeshot but Bares quickly moved out front with Lazzaretto in third. Haydin had a bobble in the east end which let both Lazzaretto and Tim Boblin move up in position before lap two started. Boblin was soon feeling pressure from Haydin and in the barn section Haydin made the pass back into third. The moto win and overall went to Bares (2/1) with Lazzaretto (1/2) second and Haydin (3/3) finishing up the podium. Kirsten Raemisch grabbed the Women’s moto one holeshot and stayed out front to the finish. Meanwhile Brittany Lemke was in second with Kaylen Pellmann just inches back fighting off a constant barrage of roost. Pellmann finally found a way past Lemke in the sand on the west end to take away second. In the barn section Marescalco found a way around Lemke into third. The running order held to the
checkers. By the time moto two came around so did the rain. Once again Raemisch ran out front staying clean while Pellmann was holding onto second and Marescalco was third. Lemke was busy defending her position from constant challenges by Ashley Densow. Densow went down on lap four leaving Lemke half a lap of easy cruising to the finish. Joseph Dretzka edged out both Zach Coons and Tyler Smulders for the holeshot in Unlimited A moto one. Dretzka was able to get a gap behind him but Coons had his hands full battling with Smulders. In moto two Matt Menzer blasted down the start to grab the holeshot but went down in the west end finishing his moto. By the first time over the plateau Dretzka was out front followed by Kurt Jennison and Coons. Coons went to work on Jennison and on lap three moved up into second. By the end of lap two Smulders had moved up into third as Jennison held onto fourth to the finish. In +50 it was Nick Lazzaretto leading the class onto the track in moto one. him with Tim Boblin running third. Michael Zimmerman fought his way up into fifth place behind Bradley Garland. On the last lap Zimmerman moved into fourth back in the sand section. In moto two Boblin was out front at the holeshot, but before he hit the plateau Lazzaretto had moved into the lead. Bill Krohn was running third but in the barn section Garland made the pass and held onto third to the checkers. Lazzaretto (1/1) topped the podium, Boblin (3/2) was on the second step, and Behrens (2/5) finished it off. Despite the Saturday rain out the crew once again did an amazing job of seeing to it that the track was in excellent shape and ready to race. However, thanks to a late night split in a storm that went north and south of the track and some amazing track preparation by promoter Craig Maasdam coupled with a strong turnout of optimistic riders from 4 states - a great day of racing was had by all. I even think there was a bit of dust on the track toward the end of the second moto! The starting gate had to be scraped and the track re-routed with some grass sections, but the results were a really fun and safe track. For those unfamiliar with the Midwest VMX series, we are dedicated to offering motocross racing in a family friendly, safe environment for both vintage and modern bikes. We have fun, race hard and are committed to going home and back to work on Monday! No whoops allowed. Check out the remainder of our series with stops at Muddy Waters July 10, Sunset Ridge Aug 8, 9 and Oct 9, and Motosports Park in Byron, IL Sept 11. Anyway, back to the racing. The track was really pretty good from the start, but it was even better after the modern bikes kicked things off with the first moto. In the hotly con50 CYCLE USA, July 2010
tested Modern 250C class, Brad Hennessee brought home the win on his KTM, with Chad Jachems finishing second on a Yamaha. In the mostly hotly contested class of the day, Schoolboy, Jon Landis, Phillip Anderson and Jarrett Winder battled both motos start to finish with Landis edging out Anderson with two first place moto finishes. In the Vintage classes, Mike McConaughy had another excellent showing on his 250 Husky defeating track owner Craig Maasdam on his Kawasaki for the overall win in the Vintage Heavyweight A class. Paul Jensen finished third, in part due to someone mysteriously tampering with his Honda and turning off the fuel. That led to a much slower first lap than anticipated! Mike McConaughy also took a win in the Modern +50A class. And finally, in the Evo/Revo +50A class, Roger Burman decided to give vintage racing a try and dominated both of his motos with two first place finishes. pen Semi-Pro contender Conner Anderson became the first rider of the season to break the four race winning streak currently held by GNC National #68 Josh Koch during the AMA District 23 Tourist Trophy dirt track race held at the Norseman club grounds in Cambridge, MN. #302 Will Larson won the Mini Chain class. The Jeff’s SOS/ Anderson Plumbing/ Motorex/ General Engineering/ Durelle Racing sponsored Koch sped to victory in the 450 Semi-Pro final via an all important holeshot ahead of Anderson who spun the tire at the start and had to work through traffic before finishing second. Anderson however, came prepared as they lined up for the Open Semi-Pro final and nailed the start perfectly to lead the nine rider pack into the first turn with Koch hot on his heels. The duo of Anderson and Koch then sped away from the rest of the field during the 25 lap endurance race. After the halfway point Anderson slowly added some distance over Koch and raced on to record his first ever class victory. “That’s the first time I’ve ever beat Josh,” explained the Diesel Minnesota/ LarTT Quad winner Nick Allen leads son’s Cycle/ Supertrap / Randy’s Toy Repair

In con-
versation with race director Kurt Boehlke afterward, Boehlke was asked by one of the riders at the starting line if they could go fifteen laps instead of twelve in which he replied, “the heck with it, we’re doing twenty five laps!” Anderson then chided, ‘’next time let’s go thirty.” Bemidji, Minnesota’s Randy Thistle took top honors in the +40 and +50 senior classes both times while battling with long time dirt tracker Ron Bystrom. Thistle’s shot at a three-peat was faltered however when veteran Verdeen Langland who recovered from a first turn crash only to bolt from the back row of the restart and into the lead as the +30 main event got underway. Langland went on to victory ahead of Thistle, Kurt Funk and Marc Haldeman. While keeping in mind the 50cc Mini classes all race for free in D-23. mateur racing stepped up a notch in intensity as the Loretta Lynn’s hopefuls that made the grade in area qualifiers moved on to the regional level. Spring Creek Park held the Youth North Central event this year and the racers were able to test their mettle on one of the country’s premier tracks. The weather was a bit testy, with rain on Saturday resulting in postponing the remainder of the day’s races in hopes of better conditions on Sunday when the remainder of the three-moto format would be concluded. The track crew put their equipment to good use the next morning and with some judicious mud-relocation brought about a pretty decent riding surface. There were over 500 entries on hand from around the midwest and farther afield with standout performances by some competitors. Joey Crown, Jerry Robin and Jace Owen all made their presence felt as they each took overalls in two classes. The Schoolboy 1 class featured a holeshot by Timmy Badour in moto one. S
ince 1995, every year the 63 year old Motorcycle Club has been putting on District 23 flat track races, the double headers have been a highlight of the Minnesota season at the lush club grounds near New Ulm, Minnesota. Day one of the two event weekend was halted during practice on the wicked fast short track from a long lasting rain that started and went until late afternoon. Head of Track Prep, Smiley Wiltscheck had to call the event for Saturday. The Flying Dutchman Motorcycle Club tried to reschedule the Short Track for Sunday but the AMA District 23 has a rule about having two races on the same day. Early race favorite National #68, Josh Koch on the Jeff's SOS Honda swept the day’s Pro Class events... sort of. During the last
of the day’s 22 classes, Rick Waschek District referee said Josh used the grass to pass Kevin Anderson and then Kevin not liking the move cut through the infield to return the favor that then moved third place Dan Jacobson Jr. into the top spot. For some reason scoring didn't get the memo from Waschek. I'm just thinking, we may hear about creative track usage at the next event. I asked 22-year-old Josh Koch what his favorite memory is from the 15 years of FDMC events, He said, "racing mini bikes with Brock Schwarzenbacher". The Open Amateur class had the fans on thier feet when Dustin Paul on a 2-stroke 125 KTM held on for the hard fought win over heat winner and cause of the main events restart Zack Zemanovic. California's Lindsey King closed out the top three at the finish.
Josh Koch won the Open Semi-Pro class.
Verdeen Langland and Randy Thistle battled in the +30 event with Kurt Funk, Bob Becker, and Jeremy Khanne. AMA District 23 has opened thier gates to the mini classes with free entries! Kamm, Mays top Pine Ridge
Crivitz, Wisconsin - May 30 By Cody Wills and Randy Miller
A
s the temps hovered near the 90 degree mark, the competition was hot as Pine Ridge Raceway kicked off its Pro-Am event. The crew had the track in perfect condition for their annual Memorial Day race. With weeks prior of no rain, a newly installed sprinkler system last fall was the perfect component for some of the best soil Wisconsin has to offer. The turnout of riders was near the 450 mark. The first moto of 250A saw local rider Brain Collins grab the holeshot on his Yamaha, and quickly pull to what looked like a commanding lead. That lead would diminish as Kody Kamm, who also had a decent start, reeled Collins in and began to run away with it. Three laps in and Kamm was out front followed by Collins, Danny Maki and Billy Larsen who had made his way up after sitting outside the top five on the first lap. Larsen made up more time in the next couple laps passing into second with two laps to go. He seemed to have the valley section of the race track dialed, making up time there every lap. By this time Vaughn Mays and Dustin Pulley had hooked up and worked their way from outside the top ten. By the final lap, early leader Collins had dropped back to the sixth. Larsen was still ringing his YZ250 out, falling just short of Kamm who took the win. They were followed by Mays, and Pulley, making it a Yamaha sweep for the top four. Honda mounted Maki took fifth. Moto two saw a very fast Nate Laporte get his YZ250 out front and check out. In moto one, Nate went down early and came from outside the top twenty to get eleventh. 56 CYCLE USA, July 2010
Not really a surprise as Laporte has to be the most improved A rider in Wisconsin in this young race season. The real battle was now for the second spot. After lap one, the top four were completely different with A class new comer Marshall Maas, followed by Zach Kenning, Dylan Narrel, then moto one winner Kamm. Larsen was back in nineth. Kawasaki mounted Maas faded back as Kenning and Narrel also fell outside the top five. Kamm made his way back up to second to secure the overall, and Larsen worked up to third for second overall. Mays put his 250F into fourth to finish third overall. Laporte’s 11-1 scores got him fourth overall. The +40 class seems to be getting faster every year. Moto one had Johnny Greaves pull the holeshot with Tom Nielsen second, ahead of John Ludwig, Honda mounted Rod Mineau, and KTM rider Tom Kalies rounding out the top five. By the time they reached the first rhythm section Kalies had the three riders in front of him set up and passed all three in one short section. Ludwig and Mineau battled for fourth all moto with Mineau winning out. Nielsen held on to a pretty quiet third as Kalies pushed hard, but fell just short of a very fast Greaves. The second moto had Kalies getting the holeshot followed by Nielsen. Mineau and Ludwig battled again, but in the end, it was Mineau getting the better end of the stick. Mike Frankini rounded out the top five. Open A proved that being consistent can pay off as Vaughn Mays took the overall with a 2-2 finish. Like in the 250A class, Billy Larsen worked from behind in both motos to garnish a 4-1 for second overall. Matt Maier led for the first few laps of each moto aboard
his KTM 450. Maier faded back to third the first moto and fourth in the second moto, still locking in third overall. “I surprised myself by leading those motos. I haven’t ridden in almost three weeks. I am pretty happy with those results” said Maier. Nate Laporte would be the first 250 two

Wagler challenges Cregg Columbus, Indiana - June 13 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck

s was the case with the seventh round of the 2010 D15 series in Matthews, the Stoney Lonesome MC club grounds was pounded with rain the night before the race. This, the eighth round of the 2010 D15 series was held in Columbus, Indiana. In anticipation of wet conditions, the club adjusted the layout and shorted all courses in order to avoid the difficult sections of the property. Given the conditions, the majority of Stoney grounds can fall into that category of Difficult. The PeeWee race course was reversed from previous races and routed around the new spectator retaining fence near the start area. Hunter Huser is on a role this year at Stoney in the PeeWee Pre Mix class and he continued that dominance through most of the race. As Huser was coming in to receive the white flag, he started experiencing bike problems. Huser had already lapped the field when he got the white flag, but had to pull into the pit area for assistance. This allowed for Louden Feltner to regain his lap and con65cc winner Vincent Smith.

tinue on to a checkered flag before Huser could get fixed and back out. Huser eventually did return to the track and finished that last lap for a hard earned third place. While Lance Maschino seems invincible at most races, it appears there is no love affair between him and Stoney. Maschino has been plagued with bike problems at most of the Stoney races this year. This race was no different, but Reed Day didn’t have any issues landing the victory in the Injector class. The mini racers faced a fun course which was significantly shorter than most, but allowed for good racing. Luke Chilman appeared to have no issues with the track as he cruised to an impressive overall win. Michael Witkowski appeared to have it all clicking until he fell very ill late in the race. Witkowski’s misfortune opened to door for Keagen Lee to take another 85cc class victory. 65cc racer Vincent Smith is proving to be the real deal. Smith was mixed in with the 85cc riders as they came through the check on the fist lap. Dawson Dunnuck followed 20 seconds behind in second. Dunnuck was out on lap two with mechanical problems, but John Henry Robinson was hanging tough and holding off Kayden Young. Robinson continued to run a near flawless race and landed the second place finish behind Smith. The big bike race saw a lower than normal turnout with 64 riders lining up and fighting for a holeshot. Lap one had Jeff Cregg taking control of the race, turning a very quick 10:38 lap time on the shortened course. Anthony Wagler was next through the gates, followed by John Robbins, who was slightly surprised to see Wagler hanging in near the front. Cregg was still in the lead at the end of lap two, riding well, but with a smaller lead over Wagler. During the third lap Daniel Sims started getting it together and moved up from number 23 to 14 overall while Doug Day dropped 21 places, from 7th overall after latching onto the mini arrows for a portion of the lap. Cregg was still in the lead at the end of lap four while Wagler owned second place, but with a 0:18 disadvantage. Nathan Sullivan kept a cool head and staked a claim on the number three spot. Robbins held the fourth spot with William Wagner claiming the number five position. As the race progressed, Cregg maintained his pace while Wagler faded to fourth overall. Robbins and Sullivan continued an intense wheel to wheel battle for second place. Still on the gas, Cregg remained in the lead during eighth and final lap staying ahead of Robbins who was trailing by 2:15. In third, Sullivan knew the throttle had to stay open if there was any chance of eliminating that 1:17

just ripped through the whoops, passed the start and launched over the first jump just as a gust of wind came up out of the valley to meet him in mid air. The wind grabbed that Honda and pushed the front end straight up and over with Luke trying everything he could to get the machine to roll back over. Waxon’s efforts were in vain as the machine didn’t come back over until the back wheels were on the ground and then it flipped over hard throwing Waxon in a spectacular crash

ith the 2010 season well under way, the ATVs rolled into Hurricane Hills for two days of racing action on Memorial Day weekend. Cole Keough came prepared to continue his domination of the Youth Production class and showed no signs of letting up as the weekend progressed. From the holeshot of his first moto Keough jumped out front and led the way all weekend, avoiding breakdowns and mistakes to win both motos on each day. The perfect double really solidified his lead in the class and has him well on his way to a District title shot. Keough was just one of several riders to double up class wins for the weekend.
