Bill to ban youth from riding defeated

Part of the group that gathered at Hall’s Cycles to attend the meeting at the capital. Springfield, Illinois - March 11 By Gerhard Ward, District 17 MX Director

M

arch 11th was the day that A.B.A.T.E., AMA District 17, IMDA, clubs, track owners, dealers, and riders from all types of racing venues converged on Springfield, IL, the state capital. The reason was Representative Mary Flowers had submitted a bill for law which would have made it illegal for anyone under the age of 16 years of age to be able to ride, race or operate either an off road motorcycle or atv. We all met at Hall's Cycles in Springfield at 7am. Some had to roll out as early as 2:30 am to make the trek to the meeting. Once there we were quite happy to find that all the e-mails and phone calls had made a difference. Some where around 150 enthusiasts over flowed the room making a pretty interesting impression on the people at the capital. Not because it was the biggest, as 5000 gun rights activists were slated to show up that evening. However that many people in an education committee meeting room isn't heard of, that is unless part of that education was to teach our kids that OHV riding was dangerous and soon to be illegal. Many congressman heard rumors about the turn out, and had to come down and check it out. They said "she won't call that bill now, way to many people in opposition." Well, Ms. Flowers did decide to leave the it in. Flowers started off with a story about a tragic accident with a 7 year old, and how that after intensive care, and severe head injuries, that she has survived, but would have problems with learning as she grew up. She talked about national studies which she quoted figures and statistics which made riding an ATV sound like everyone who rode one was taking chances like Travis Pastrana jumping out of an airplane with no parachute. If she said it once, she said it ten times, she was going to "save the children" even if that meant "she saved one child it would be worth this effort". After some more figures and stats she started telling us about Suzuki and Polaris, which by the way she could not

pronounce either company name correctly. Listing riding parks which were "over a 150 miles" from here, but never mentioning the state supported riding park 20 minutes down the road. Needless to say, once the her comments were finished we all were more then ready to talk. The chairman said, "Okay, we know many of you want to speak but let’s start with saying that 124 sheets have been turned in opposed, and none for this bill. We want only a few people to comment and then take a vote. We have a lot to do today, and many know on this committee how they are going to vote, so lets keep the comments short." Bob Ward from ABATE of Illinois was the first to speak and made great points about kids and family. A couple other guys spoke, then a young man Ryan Burggren did a great job of speaking in front of all those "grown" ups. Rev there for JMX. Bud Northrup spoke of the family atmosphere at many racing events, and all the different places to ride, many with OHV Grant funding in which he sits on the state board. Reminding the committee that the State of IL. taxes purchases on all OHV machines, receives tax revenues from all the gas, food and other purchases on a weekend when the family goes riding. He went on to state in this time of a really bad economy why would they consider banning this sport for the kids. After some others

said a few words, Rep. Flowers countered with some more babble about saving one child is worth it. These committee members from Chicago, Davis, Golar, and Osterman voted in favor to Ban OHV riding by kids under 16, which are names we should remember in the future. Simply put the only individuals in the room who were for this bill was Flowers and the other three Reps from the Chicago area. Their were no witnesses in favor of this bill. We made a large statement this day. Hopefully it will be heard and we won't have to keep fighting for our right to enjoy off road riding in this state. I would think personally that these representatives would have much more pressing issues to deal with. BUT.... it is government, and we’ll stay tuned and will likely see something like this again, and Rep. Flower's actually stated she will be back with another bill to be considered. If that happens, we will need to rise to the occasion again. On a personal note, Patty and I want to thank everyone who dropped everything to come out and support this effort, also to all those folks who wrote letters, called and emailed the representatives. We took our sons Travis and Garrett out of school to see the process and visit the capital. Today was a good day for the sport.

Senate Bill to Overturn Ban on Youth ATVs and Dirt Bikes Introduced! Weigh in to have Your Voice Heard! Youth sized ATVs and dirt bikes are still banned. We need your help to continue to build enough pressure to get the ban overturned. It is unlikely that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) will act to approve the Motorcycle Industry Council’s petition to grant regulatory relief. This means we need Congress to act. Senator Tester (D-MT) has introduced legislation, S. 608 that would stop the ban. Please urge your Senators and Members of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee to support this bill. It is imperative that everyone in your family gets involved... and hopefully you can pull other friends into the effort as well. It is easy to send these letters, and more info can be found at www.stopthebannow.com or www.arra-access.com Notes from AMA District 17 Motocross. 2009 will bring some new ideas to point chasing in District 17. Motocross will not have a "State Championship" race, but will have "bonus" point races with much more meaning. Those riders who are chasing points need to hit the bonus events as they will be worth twenty points this season. Every track has a bonus event (10 total) and likely will have better turnouts/ competition on those days. Some of the clubs and promoters are offering other special promotions in conjunction with the Bonus points payout, making for an even better day. This gives everyone in the district a special race, and riders can compete more often against other riders. Much like a series within a series. Riders will now travel to other tracks to earn a true championship at the end of the year! District 17 Stadium MX will be the same as always, having a Championship race. This year it is being held at Stateline MX. It looks like 2009 will be another good year with plenty of tracks, races and types of events in District 17 for anyone to enjoy. Everyone at District 17 want to thank all those who helped with e-mails, phone calls, and letters/ faxes against the bill proposed by Mary Flowers. Specially all the people who were able to take time off work/ pull kids out of school and travel to Springfield to voice opposition. It was the group effort of ALL types of racers that made this such a successful process. We are watching and waiting for her next move, we suspect next year we will have to do this again! We will keep you all informed and hope that maybe Ms Flowers does more homework and sees that we have a good sport. If not, we can drive there and remind her again. Gerhard Ward, D17 Director of MX. On The Cover: Family members Tyler Tischler #302, Michael Witkowski #557 and Alex Witkowski all came away class winners at D15’s opening Hare Scrambles in Plymouth, IN.

Announcements, personal stuff, and....

Riders' Meeting, By D16 President Ken Schuck. Hold the line in 2009. The national economy is struggling. I hope each and every rider and rider's families are still doing OK. The D16 clubs and promoters have again scheduled an amazing number of events. Please support them by racing or spectating again this year. Every year I am reminded of the fun I have riding my dirt bike, or my road bike, putting on events for the Madison Motorcycle Club and being involved in District 16. Almost any time I go to an event I recognize fellow riders and workers. Even though I can't always recall their names (getting old, I guess). Remember your local dealers and independent shops. They support many events with trophies, door prizes, etc. A lot of folks that work at these places are also riders and racers. Most are more than willing to help out their fellow riders, we should do the same for them. The more involved you get, the more fun you will have. I hope to see you all out there again this year! All District Members. A reminder to all the Cycle USA readers that get the magazine as part of your membership with one of the sponsoring districts... renew your memberships right away to assure you don’t miss any of the Spring issues. The April issue may be the last you receive if you have not yet renewed. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It is March 19th as I type this and we still do not have a resolution to the CPSC ban on sales of motorized vehicles to riders under 13. I have just read an article in USA Today saying that Malcolm Smith at 68 years old has taken on the CPSC. He informed them that he was going to sell youth bikes, and if the rumors are true the likes of Jeremy McGrath and Rick Johnson are a couple of the customers. It is really sad that this legend has to stand up alone for an entire industry. This is the stance our industry should have taken by February 17th, 2009. Malcolm has gone from legend to super hero. Now it remains to be seen if there are any more men out there within the industry that will stand with him. All of you riders and racers out there take note of all that happen starting March 20th. board with Malcolm Smith then do not support them in any way shape or form. I expect to see most of us in MSR gear for the foreseeable future. Kudos to the MAN. There are times that a stance has to be taken to force an issue and to right a wrong. Unfortunately our large, and still prosperous industry ran up the white flag of surrender and left that task up to a man that has already done way more than his share for our sport. Thank you Malcolm Smith now factories and dealers it is time for you to stand up with him. The CPSC ruling, while most likely not enforceable, and certainly unconstitutional will not be the last of our battles in the next few years. It will take time and effort on the part of all of us to keep our sport moving forward and to protect it from being legislated out of existence. Please be ready and respond when the call comes. It will be up to each of us to make certain we are here tomorrow, and the day after. We know from many years experience with our state legislature that it takes bodies showing up to the meetings to make a difference. Together we will survive and prosper. In other news, I have been contacted regarding an injury study. In researching the premise of this study it should really be a good thing for us as riders and racers. There will be many more details coming in the near future, and if you have a youth racer in the family he may be eligible to enroll. In the long run we would like to see some new helmet standards come out for Youth racers. The current standards all apply to the average size adult. I will keep you posted and keep our web site with the details. Rest assured that this will be a positive thing for us. We have a really full calendar of events for 2009 in all of our venues. It is shaping up to be a great year competition wise. The season is only a couple weeks away after what seems to have been an endless winter. I hope to see all of you out there giving everything you have, and as always having a ton of fun doing it. Mike

“My Photo Pages” Here’s a chance to get your favorite photo published in Cycle USA With the season finally off and running, we want to get these pages going as soon as we can. The new “MyPhoto” page, or even better yet, a group of these pages will be a great addition to the magazine. This is your opportunity to submit a cool photo, and have a good chance of it getting published. We’re thinking photos that capture a truely memorable moment... someone with their first trophy, or a group photo of you and all your pit buddies. It could be a really cool photo from a mud race you just happened to get. Maybe there’s a track worker that has never really been noticed, but deserves to be, and you get a photo of them flagging or whatever. An off-road ride with a couple friends, and you get a cool shot together in some scenic setting. Perhaps a really good action shot, just good old racing stuff. They don’t have to be on the track photos... people having a good time together at the events is great. Nothing obscene, but be creative and have fun. Clear, close, and good photos work. Send your “high-resolution” photo to myphoto@cycleusa.com. Include a note describing the image, the who, where and when along with your name. Editors decisions are final, but we’ll include everything possible. As soon as we get enough submissions, we’ll get the pages started. CYCLE USA, April 2009 7

Reads Awards Banquet leads way to 2009 Season Nappanee, Indiana - March 7 By Bobby Elkins

T

he 2008 Reads Racing Awards Banquet came late enough to actually help kick start the 2009 Season. The banquet was held three weeks after the District 15 Banquet in Indianapolis. A date had been scheduled earlier but had to be cancelled since it coincided with the Supercross. They were very lucky to have snagged a date at the United Christian School in Nappanee, Indiana. The room had a large kitchen, and a small stage. Best of all, it was a larger facility, and by the looks of the turnout, it was a good thing. The impressive turnout meant a lot to the Reads Racing Family. It was apparent there were a lot of riders excited about beginning the 2009 season. This year the most improved rider award went to Madison Johnson of Anderson, Indiana. As voting began for all awards by members of the Reads staff, Most improved was talked about for the least amount of time. There were some stories told and some checkin' back and forth, but it wasn't long before the name Madison Johnson was being repeated and voted on. Madison

had a break through about mid-season that began etching her name in the award before the season was over. She began starting better and racing harder. Madison is figuring things out. She's learned to ride harder in a shorter gear! She knows it's going to be a lot of work to get even faster, but she's also very eager to learn. No one person is responsible for her new-found talent on a motocross bike except herself. She earned it! A new category was added to the awards ceremony this year. "Most Likely to Succeed!" MLTS was created to honor riders that the Reads Racing Staff assume could have a pro career if they truly went for it. Dakota Robins of Denver, IN was honored as well as Austin Carter of Elkhart. Both kids have grown up racing each other and both use the whole bike. Phillip Schlegel of Wheatfield, IN was another rider not overlooked. When he's on, he's really on. Sam Miller picked up a MLTS award and is another rider who can make a name for himself in this sport. Chandler Pitts of Peru, IN was a shoe in for this award. He's got the talent, the backing and the desire. Chandler barring no injury will be staging in a pro event in the future. No doubt about it, he's already picked

up some great habits the pro's use off and on the track. He's the real deal and should be very successful. Justin Stichter of Goshen, IN who is another small pilot also honored. His family is supportive, and Justin seems to always challenge himself. One thing he shows is great balance. Another Kevin Windham in the making? If not he can join the circus and walk the tight rope. In any case he is another who should be proud to be honored by winning a MLTS award. Kyle Biggins of Spencerville, IN was also on the list of riders who could sign a deal one day. He's got the family to lean on and the family to lean on him. If someone were ever to say to me "Kyle Biggins made a main event",.... my first response wouldn't be, "really?",... I think I would respond,... "what gate pick did he get?" Two more riders were also awarded MLTS plaques who were not at the event. Camron and Cady Pressler of Columbia City. Both have grown up around a race track. I'll betcha if Cady wore mix-gas as perfume to her prom, no one would notice. It's just Cady wearing race gas. Camron is now growing up

District 17 Awards Banquet Ottawa, Illinois - January 24

M

other nature made it easy for everyone to get to our special celebration this year. Weather wasn't an issue for the 2008 AMA District 17 Awards banquet. Extreme cold was on hand but the snow wasn't flying which in January is always a good thing. Riders started showing up as early as 3pm to get the "good" seats, and by 5:30 the almost 600 riders, friends, and family had made their way into the pavilion. Pitsticks Pavilion north of Ottawa, has hosted our banquet for the better part of twenty years. With it's excellent food and family atmosphere, the hall has been a stable part of our year-end award process. The night started off with Trials awards, then followed up with Hare Scrambles in the "East Wing", at the same time Motocross was starting to hand out jackets in the main hall. The District 17 motocross and stadium crowd was down a little bit this season. Many of our younger riders were on hand to receive their awards, and try out their dancing skills. We had a ton of door prizes to hand out, and Likely half the riders went home with some kind of prize. Notable winners this season included, Anthony Wallace following in Chase Sexton’s footsteps of last year, won all four classes he raced; 50Sr along with 65Jr in both motocross and stadium racing. D17 Dirt Track Referee Stan Camp was happy with the banquet, and is already looking forward to another great season. “This was another fun year of racing for the D17 dirt track crews. It was very nice to see everyone that we had not seen since October. There were however quite a few that were missed. I know the economy plays a big roll in this. I also know as a parent of three, two that race, life is very busy this day and age and schedules conflict. The district had a very strong group of

The man we were all watching this year was AA rider Lee Lankutis. He was there every weekend and showing why he won the top spot. There was one other small thing, Lee received the 2008 Mark Cain Sportsmen Of The Year Award. When Lee received his award he was very taken, as he is each weekend, he was very gracious in accepting it. The guy that we all think will be hunting for the AA title next year is Matt Capodice. He won the A class title this year, and won several overalls as well. We look forward to him running up with the AA riders next year. The guy that was there with the four wheelers every weekend was Roger Swim,

Wild looking hats and organized dancing kept the kids interested while all the parents socialized. The long winter this year had them all discussing "when can we ride" and where! Few things changed for the ‘09 season, races look to be plentiful as always. Hopefully the weather breaks early and we all can be racing/riding soon!! See you on the track or trails!!!!!

Bob’s Cycle Winter Classic New Richmond, Wisconsin - January 17 By Michael Anderson

F

or the second year of many to come the Amsoil Sandbox ran its annual Bob’s Cycle Winter Classic. This race gives racers from the regular Sandbox winter series a chance to come out and race in a different format. Racers run more laps and don’t have to worry about series points if they push too hard or take a few more chances. The race is run with a Supercross format, and with that comes an added excitement in the air with larger crowds and extra activities in between motos. In the Lites Pro A main it was Justin Craft of Ham Lake, MN pulling the first holeshot, with Mike Bottolfson and Kelly Brown right beside him heading through the first set of whoops. Craft and Bottolfson traded the lead three times in the first lap, until Bottolfson started pulling about two bikes lengths with each lap. On lap five Craft bobbled in a corner and Brown passed. Craft was relentless, riding Brown’s rear tire for the next three laps. Brown then slid off the track for a moment due to a flat rear tire and Craft went by for second. Somehow Brown rode two more laps clearing every jump without going down for third overall. All three battled again in the MX Pro class; another ten laps of close racing. Next up was the +25 class. Jared Anderson’s first race back after injuring his knee months ago started out with a holeshot and a four bike lead after lap one. Mike Little caught up to Anderson after three laps. With this added pressure Anderson crashed twice on lap four and Little took over the lead. Then out of mid-pack came Levi Mcmains on his 125 two-stroke. With two laps to go Mcmains had hugged every inside line and pulled up to Little’s rear wheel. Mcmains then tried every line that Little was not in, trying to make the pass. He seemed on a mission this moto but Little held him off well and took the win.

In the MX B class #308 Colin Jackson rounded the first corner in the lead. On lap two Connor Ahlers of Duluth passed Jackson. Jake Burbach was now right on Jackson’s tire looking to take over second. Burbach worked hard for three laps to finally pass Jackson on the back straight, then charged hard through the whoops to take over the lead, and win the event. In the 85cc 12-15 race, Alex Nagy of Richmond, IL pulled a great holeshot leaving Brandon Riehm and Brody Penman chasing. Nagy and Riehm ran close for The evening’s 30 second girls. three laps, even hitting bars in two first race. This was also the first feeling I had corners. Other top winners for District 16 included Darren DeGross in the 600cc and Senior classes, Kirk Mueller in the 750cc class, TC Allen in the Open class, and Dan Shaha in the 0-400cc Stock class. District 23 Awards were given out next with the Prebe family once again making their presence known. They weren’t quite as dominant as their performance in Wisconsin, but Nathan, Jacob, and Aaron combined to win six classes for the season in Minnesota. The Cain family also had a great showing in District 23. Steve, Brad, and Tim took home five first place plaques and the new jackets that go with them. he 2008 Season awards banquet for Hill Climb riders from both Districts 16 & 23 was held at Grandpa’s Event Center in Cannon Falls, MN this year, and for the first time in several years, the weather cooperated with sunny skies and above average temps (for February in Minnesota). Here’s hoping that this is a sign of things to come for the ‘09 season. Riders and their families from all across the upper Midwest signed in at a steady pace all afternoon to enjoy some social time and get registered for all the drawings later in the evening. Social time was followed by a very nice buffet style dinner. After the meal, Kaleb Northrup took the stage and got the official portion of the evening rolling. Before the awards were given out some announcements were made, and the 2009 schedule was announced. The biggest news of the evening was that the Hill Climb Nationals were coming back to Minnesota this year. Jim Gitter of the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club was on hand and said the Dutchmen had been awarded the National. The event will be held in August at the club grounds just outside of New Ulm. Tech inspection will be Friday. First runs will go Saturday with final runs Sunday. Also coming up in the 2009 season, a second Hill Drag event has been added to the schedule. The Indianhead Motorcycle Club will host a side by side racing event this June along with the Kato Cycle Club’s third annual drag event. Micro Mini top finishers. 24

Reed wins Indy SX Ties points chase with Stewart Indianapolis, Indiana - February 28 By Larry Witmer Photos by Michael Sierens

I

ndianapolis’s new Lucas Oil dome was host to its first ever Supercross event, and Chad Reed left the crowd already looking forward to next year’s return. Opening ceremonies had long time Indiana favorite Mike LaRocco going through the rubble of the old RCA dome finding a gold horse shoe, then showing the Hoosier native winning at the RCA dome in 2004 on the two huge screens in the dome. This electrified the crowd showing his last pro event win. LaRocco helped design tonight’s track, and it was tough. A short start straight, turn left and into a seventy foot double off the start that was next to impossible. Throw in some great timing jumps with different ways to attack them, forty truck loads of sand just after the finish line, and a 120’ section of rockers that the riders couldn’t get a clear run at and most said this was the best laid out track yet this year. 61,000 plus fans were in for a great show. Heat 1 of the Supercross class saw the holeshot expert Mike Alessi go through the tight left hand corner ahead of Ryan Villopoto. David Millsaps on the factory Honda was third after Thomas Hahn went down on lap two in the tight finish line corner. Millsaps went by Villopoto through a rhythm section, then got by Alessi on lap four. Alessi and Villopoto hit and banged each other until the checkers with Alessi holding on to second. Heat 2 holeshot went to Robert Kiniry. It was short lived as James Stewart and Chad Reed both zapped him on the opening lap. These two top contenders were close the first three laps, then Stewart checked out for the win. Andrew Short carded a third. The LCQ win went to Josh Hill, with Kiniry taking the last spot for the main event. Regional riders James Povolny, Jacob Marsack, and Indiana’s Scott Metz were unable to make the final. The Main Event was staged and with the drop of the gate Reed took the holeshot on his Suzuki. Reed went slightly wide around the left hand corner, and in doing so did the 70’ double jump off the start for the 26

first time this evening. Alessi was close in second, with Windham and Michael Byrne running just in front of Stewart. Alessi and Stewart went at it the first lap passing and repassing in the rockers. Reed made a quick break from the field, gapping it some six seconds by the end of the second lap. Stewart took a quick soil sample when the front end of the Yamaha washed out in a fast left hand corner. The fourth lap saw Reed opening his lead to seven seconds while Windham, Alessi, and Stewart went fought over the runner up slot. Stewart passed Alessi in the sand section kicking up a Tuf Block right in the path of Windham. Stewart started cutting into Reed’s lead, but was riding on the ragged edge, almost throwing it away in the long rocker section. Broc Helpler’s return to SX was looking good until a crash on lap six took the Yamaha rider out of the top ten. Andrew Short was off the track with a rock jammed into the rear brake. Short got the rock out, but the points damage was done. Stewart continued to cut away at Reed’s lead, and on lap twelve he passed Reed with a tight inside line. Reed looked more relaxed after Stewart got by, and kept the pressure on hard. It paid off on lap fifteen going into the finish line s-turn section. Stewart took the inside for the first time in the main to protect his position and his front brake hit the tuf block sending Stewart quickly down to the ground. Reed took over the lead and went on for the win. Stewart came in second, some

four seconds behind with Alessi carding third. Rounding out the top five was Josh Grant and Ivan Tedesco. Alessi was elated with the podium finish. “Its my first podium ever and I am excited! Thanks to the Indy crowd.” Stewart was smiling in winners circle, “I told you guys this was going to be a good race tonight, I just came up short. Reed rode great tonight and good job. I hung it out and made a couple of mistakes that cost me a win.” Reed commented, “I knew if I got the start I’d have a chance. I just might move to Indy, you guys were loud, and man it was great hearing you. Much thanks goes out to Team Rockstart Suzuki, they have been great. This win feels good!” In the Lites class Heat one went to Wil Hahn. Early leaders Martin Davalos and Austin Stroupe collided over a jump, with going down. Both riders got back up to qualify. Local rider Brad Ripple got into the main via an eighth place finish. Lites division two saw Vince Friese on his Honda get the holeshot, with Nicco Izzi second and Steve Clark third. It was a good battle with Izzi getting the win ahead of Clark and Kawasaki mounted Brandon Jesseman. Indiana’s Shane Sewell took a direct transfer after finishing eighth. In the main event saw Izzi ripped the holeshot, but Yamaha mounted Darryn Durham went over the bars collecting half the field. There was carnage everywhere and

when Izzi came through the finish line to complete lap one the red flag was out, even though the first turn was cleaned up. The Izzi camp was not very happy on this decision. The restart saw points leader Chris Pourcel get the holeshot over Stroupe with Clark third. Izzi was sixth. Stroupe kept it close, and struck past Pourcel on lap three with an inside bump and pass. Stroupe took the win, battered and bruised after the second heat crash, and then the big pile up in the first corner. “This win feels great! My Monster Energy Kawasaki is fast. I’m sure I’ll feel this tomorrow, after going down twice tonight. Thanks Indy for the cheers!” Pourcel ended up second, with Izzi third on the podium. The fences at the Soaring Eagle Casino were filled with race fans from around the Midwest as the big guns of the Grand National tour came out to do battle on the frozen tundra. inside bails on both ends of the track while Schwarzenbacher. Bigelow went with the opposite end of the spectrum and was up high, feet on the pegs stretching the throttle cables. At the halfway point, the motor on Mees’s CRF went south ending the battle up front. The big battle between Mees and Bigelow opened up a lead over the pack, and Bigelow extended that lead until the checkered flag came out. The young lad Vanderkuur rode above his listed age and had his hands full with Cummings. However, in what many are calling the next Michigan dirt track GNC regular, Vanderkuur held off Cummings at the line to fill the all Michigan HLR Motorsports Park - Moberly, MO podium while Emmenwww.hlrmotorsports.net 660-263-4321 dorfer crossed the line You must race at least 1 qualifier and finish in the top in fourth just ahead of

Bryan Smith crept away to win the Kold Kutter Open Pro class.

The premier race of the day had to be the Kold Kutter Open Pro finale, no less that seven GNC riders including nine time GNC Champion Scotty Parker who was there mostly for the show and to watch his buddies, couldn’t resist bowering a Nichole

Cheza back up scooter after seeing the facility. Smith, Bigelow, Mees and Ed Hieftje won their heat races, putting the four heavy hitters on the front row along with Meyers, Cummings and Cheza. As the light went green, it was the mighty KX500 of vet rider and holeshot master Hieftje leading the pack into turn one. Myers and Mees dropped underneath Hieftje coming out of turn two and the three headed down the front straight three abreast as Kurtis Lee, Smith and Cummings all gave chase. Bigelow didn’t get the start he wanted, but it was only a lap into the race and Bigelow was in the top five. Smith was also on the move and by lap three he had his big twin out front and was throwing ice cubes off the rear wheel of his XR, pelting both Mees and Bigelow in the process. Smith had the high line working and crept away with each passing lap. Bigelow was all over Mees, but couldn’t find the opening he needed to advance his position and as the white flag

neared, it was clear to see that Smith was riding on rails making that Harley Davidson twin sing to the delight of the crowded fences. Bigelow made run after run at Mees going into three lap after lap before the two followed Smith to the white flag. Mees revenged his Kold Kutter 450 loss to Bigelow by nailing down the runner up spot. On the podium, Smith was all smiles, “I knew it was a risk running the Harley out there but it was working well today, and I have to give a shout out to the gang from Baja as they did a great job with the facility and track.” Second place rider Mess commented, “I was a little surprised that Brian rode the 750 today, the 500 works so well, it must of been a handful out there, but he made it work.” The King of GNC racing Parker crossed the line in the Kold Kutter Open Pro class ninth on a borrowed bike, and in an interview later in the day, told the MC “I brought my helmet with me just in case I got the bug, and I sure am glad I did because I had a blast with them kids out there.” The 250A class lined up for the finals and the Kurchak Brother and Sister act each had won their heat races, putting the sibling rivalry on the front row. Ultimately there were at least four riders that could have won the race and it came down to the last lap when Stacey Kurchak took the lead for good, crossing the line just ahead of brother Steve Kurchak and Jonathan Turner. The race action was fast, the event was run well, and many will be contacting the AMA to see if the AMA Ice Racing National Championships have found a long term home in the mitten state. Rochester, Indiana - March 14

R

Fort Wayne’s Chris Scott was the fastest rider on the track.

eads Racing is known for kicking off the AMA District 15 motocross season... this year was more of the same, except it was one of the better weather days an opener has seen in a long time. Sunny skies, mid fifties... perfect for racing. Also in great shape, the Fulton MX track. The Reads family had everything ready, well prepped, and it was a fun day of racing that actually saw both a morning program followed by a complete afternoon race, then the customary Sunday program starting the next morning. The Quad B class officially opened the 2009 season with ten riders coming off the line in the first moto. Matt Hoover pulled the holeshot on his honda only to immediately be hammered on by Suzuki mounted Brian Shukitis of Chesterton, IN. Shukitis took the lead as the riders made their first trip through the whoops, and never looked back. As he pulled away for the eventual win, Hoover held his own as Sonny Nemitz made his way into third ahead of Jacob Stephenson and Michael Schooley. Half way through the second lap, Schooley made an infield double to pass Stephenson for third. Stephenson kept it close trying to get his position back, but not hitting two of the tracks doubles held him back to finish fifth ahead of Anthony Russell. In the second moto it was Nemitz who had the best reactions as he led the first half a lap... again, with Shukitis right their in second looking for an opening. As he did in the first moto, when the leaders went into the whoops, Shukitis dove inside and into the lead. From their, the race was all his as he wrapped up the first overall in the new season. Hoover had a bad start, and passed into fifth during the first two laps behind Zachary Shrum and Schooley running in third. Hoover’s run forward came to a halt after running into problems and dropping back. Shrum dropped out and Jacob Stephenson worked up to fourth after finishing fifth in the first outing. The good run by Nemitz (3-2) was good for second overall ahead of Schooley. The second moto of the day combined two competitive classes, +40, and the quickly becoming even more popular 125cc 2-stroke class. The +40 riders on thier bigger bikes dominated the track as far as the overall positions. Rod Vigar had the start down perfectly, and quickly started pulling away as Brad Kopsho and William Kirkpatrick were working through the 125cc riders to get a chance at catching Vigar. By the end of the second lap the three +40 riders were pulling away, and now all fighting for the lead. Vigar tired quickly... a common occurrence for many at early season races. Kopsho was first to strike, taking over the lead, a half lap before Kirkpatrick was able to climb into second where they would finish.

Jake Rice was super fast in the 85cc classes.

In the second +40 moto Kopsho took the holeshot and had the same two front runners right behind him. Into the second lap, Vigar was trying to make a move into the lead. Kirkpatrick took a shot at passing into second, but stalled his bike. He dropped back a ways, but came right back in the next lap and a half. Vigar again dropped off the pace getting pumped up. Kirkpatrick chased Kopsho right to the finish line without making any of his pass attempts stick. Kopsho swept his second moto of the day on his Yamaha for the overall as well. Isaiah Monroe led the 125cc class through the first two laps, but then slid back as Scott Swinford and Mitchell Highbaugh came flying by. Highbaugh gave it his all, but just couldn’t beat Swinford. Monroe used his good start to finish third after fending off Cody Garfield. Elkhart, IN’s Highbaugh got the second

moto holeshot, and it made all the difference as he rode smart, just ahead of Swinford, all the way to the checkered flag for the win and overall. Cody Baker finished sixth in the first moto but had an even better second moto third, for fourth overall behind Monroe (3-4). The two went at it all moto, with the muddy corner in the track’s back section making for position swaps twice. The 85cc 12-15 and 9-11 classes were combined, and right out of the first turn, no one touched 12-15 class rider Jake Rice on his KTM. He pulled away, and flat out hauled off to take an easy looking win. Behind him, Jared Wisler passed Megan Moan take over second. Dalton Packard eventually worked up to third, and closed on Wisler, but just couldn’t get by as the moto ended. As Rice dominated the second moto again, Packard had the start he needed to finish second, beating out Wisler. Megan Moan finished fourth in both motos. The 85cc 9-11 class was pretty clean after the first lap as Derrick Bryant had two good rider on his Suzuki for back to back wins. Isaac Kopsho and Jordan Parmley finished second and third each moto. Terry Jamieson and Jarred Wright went 4-5 in each moto. Kennan Leis was having a great day, it was his first time racing.

Megan Moan rode well all day and won the Women’s 65-86cc class.

Brad Kopsho held off #40 William Kirkpatrick to win the +40 class.

Jared Wright took his KTM to two moto wins ahead of Isaac Kopsho and Ethan Binney in the 65cc 10-11 class. In the 7-9 year old class, Maxwell Spicer worked hard for the first moto win, but Johnathan Davis put it all together in the second moto to grab the win, and overall victory. Battle Ground, IN’s Preston Barngrover was the fastest 50cc rider of the day on his Cobra. He took both moto wins in the 50cc 4-6 class, topping the 7-8 riders who were on a combined gate drop. Then he also ran off in both motos of the 50cc Open class. On the big bikes, Fort Wayne’s Chris Scott made a return to racing, trying to get some track time after a significant injury this winter while racing an indoor event. Scott was in a class of his own, turning laps times far quicker than anyone else on the day. The MXDecals/ RJK backed Kawasaki rider commented, “This was a pretty rough winter after crashing bad indoors. It feels good getting out and riding, although I am under prepaired as I just haven’t had enough time, but this is a good way to start. I came here fully expecting it to be a mud bog, and it is totally dry except for the one corner in the back. It is a great start to the season and now the work begins towards a successful Loretta Lynn’s.” The season is now officially off and running, and this was a great way to get it going. We had new racers, vets, and a mix of everyone between. With the soft economy and all those related concerns, it was really refreshing seeing everyone come back together and enjoy their favorite activity... a day at the races. Let it be just the beginning of a long and outstanding season! CYCLE USA, April 2009 31

Local wrench to working on Reed’s bikes By Cody Wills

R

iders around District 16 may remember a guy in in the late 1990’s early 2000’s that used to haul the Torque Center rig to all the races. If you don’t, his name is Mike Mcquillin. You used to find Mike driving the Torque Center rig from a late Friday night race in Southern Wisconsin to a Saturday race in Northern Wisconsin. Changing tires and selling those “California goodies” all day long. Oh, I forgot to mention, he would be racing a couple classes during those days as well. Mike started at Torque Center when he was sixteen, working out of the truck on the weekends changing tires, and started full time at Torque Center when he turned eighteen. He worked all week at the shop, then traveled to the District 16 races on the weekends. In 2003 Mike decided to move to Florida with his wife Megan and attend MMI. When school was over he got a job with a dealership in Orlando. In the fall of 2005, after working at the dealership for two years, Mike heard from a friend that Chad Reed was looking for extra help at the practice facility in Dade City, Florida. Thanksgiving week Mike went to meet Chad, and soon after started doing jobs for Chad on the bikes and at the property. By the time the 2006 supercross season started Mike was working full time as a practice mechanic for Chad. Mike moved to the property and has lived there ever since. He lives in a house he remodeled just footsteps away from the race shop with his wife Megan and dog Liebe. There is a wide range of things you will find Mike doing as a practice mechanic for Chad. During the week, Mike is up at the crack of dawn working on the two supercross tracks. He puts numerous coats of water on the tracks, then hops in the dozer and track loader and reworks them to perfection. After working the tracks he will often make his way into the shop to make sure the bike is perfect for a day of

practice. He makes sure there is a new clutch, filter and tires on the bike every day. That’s not all Mike does with the bike, every so many hours Mike needs to put in a new motor and send the old motor back to the factory. He will do the same with the frame. Not all the testing is done in California. There are times Mike is on the phone giving specs to the factory team that they tried in Florida so the team can match it on the race bike for that weekend. After the bike is ready and Chad shows up, its time to hit the track. Mike makes sure he is giving lap times and keeping Chad motivated every lap. Between practice sessions Chad may ask for different gearing, flywheel, clutch, brake setup, or maybe a track touch up. Once practice is over the bike gets washed and ready for the next day. Aside from employee/employer, when the day is all said and done, Mike and Chad are good friends. For fun Mike still squeezes in some pit bike seat time and enjoys spending time with his wife and dog out on the practice facility property. He spends a lot of time building rock climbing trucks, which is a passion of his, along with Vo l k s w a g e n Beetles. Lately, however, his time has been spent attending Supercross races. Mike says he owes a

lot to the late Torque Center founder Mike Gaborsky, “I learned a lot from him, he was like a second father to me,” says Mike. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for him.” Mike contributes his hard work ethic to what he learned from Mr. Gaborsky. So, if you happen to bump into Mike at a race in the future make sure to stop and say hi. He is the type of guy that would give the shirt off his back to help someone out. This story really shows that if you work hard enough and maybe take a risk in life, here and there, you might just end up doing something that doesn’t even feel like a job at all….. just a whole lot of fun being around something you love everyday!!!

Siler takes two at LTM Opener Casey, Illinois - March 8 By Kirt Monk

L

incoln Trail Motosports got the first District 17 race in the books on Sunday March 8th with Tim Jackson in his second year as owner. The forecast called for rain all day, and mother nature gave the track just the right amount of moisture for some great racing. New for LTM is a separated program for bikes and quads. All bikes practice and race before the quads take to the track later in the day. This seemed to be a hit with the riders as track conditions were great, for both the bikes, and the quads being able to form their own type of lines and grooves. This created some great battling through the day, and none better then what took place in the 85Sr class between Keeze Carver and Blake Copeland. Carver grabbed the moto one holeshot and early lead, but Copeland was on the charge picking off time on Carver with each lap. At the closing stages of the moto Copeland made a pass and held on for the win. Moto two saw more of the same with Carver pulling the holeshot, but Copeland wasted no time jumping out to the lead and

never looking back. Carver held on to second for the overall while Joseph Aumiller rounded out the top three. Cody Siler made the trip to LTM to pick up wins in both the 250B and Schoolboy classes. Siler made it look easy winning three of his four motos. The only challenge for Siler came in the second moto of 250B from Kawasaki rider Mitch Koebele. However, Koebele’s first moto DNF handed the overall to Siler with a 1-2 finish. Later in the day, if wanted a battle, the Quad C class was where it was at, in both motos. Behind overall winner Wyatt Halfhill a three way fight for second place took place both motos. It came down to the checkers in the second moto with Austin Adams edging out Jeffery Agnew for the runner-up spot in a successful first race of this new season. CWIRA Mid-Season Championship Tomah, Wisconsin - February 1

T

he Central Wisconsin Ice Racing DLB Motorsports backed Mid-Season Championship saw a near perfect day for ice racing. Temps were in the upper 20’s, and the sun was out all day. This event is special for a couple reasons, one of them being how close the event is ran to a good sized town. The larger course made for great racing, and with plenty of good ice, a large area was plowed for the exceptionally large crowd of spectators that make this an annual favorite. Many of the town’s businesses were aware, and quick to pass along directions and information about the event that draws hundreds of newcomers for the day. It has been a good season for ice racing... plenty of ice, and for the most part, the weekends have been spared bad travel weather. In Central Wisconsin, that can have a big effect on an event’s success. Today’s race marked a midpoint in the season’s points chase, with only a few of the classes starting to have any sort of substantial leaders. Every good finish is still very important to most of these competitors. In the Open Pro Quad class, Ryan Powell led off the line. Jody Meadows spent the first three laps trying to find a way around, and it finally worked as he got to the inside of Powell to take over. Ken Marcou and Kris Parker were fender to fender on their Yamahas right to the finish for third and fourth as Mike Mueller finished fifth. Meadows made it right to the front of the second moto on his KTM, and left the suspense behind. Colin Wilcott was second with Marcou third. The two railed around the course getting side by side often until the white flag came out. Marcou made one more dash out of the final turn to the inside and just inched by for second and second overall. Parker rode smart to finish fourth again, good for third overall in the very tight group that followed the leaders. The Outlaw Pro Rubber ATV (non-studded) guys put on another good show. Scott Lindner led the way early with Scott Geldernick all over the track, trying to move up. Geldernick also had to worry about Dan Lindner who was sweeping in and out of the corners, testing the ice for traction to make a run to the front. The three stayed tight all the way and as they came into the final lap Dan pushed it hard into turn three and went too wide, giving up some time, but managing to stay in third as Nick Nett just missed moving up a spot. The second moto win wasn’t decided until the final turn... Scott Lindner had been leading the entire race, fending off Dan Lindner. Dan got one of his inside moves to stick as Scott ran wide in turn three on the

Gettinger won the second moto, and Potter improved to finish second and second overall ahead of Gray. The PeeWee Quad class had a dozen little buzzing ATV’s ripping around the ice. Dawson Dick of Marshfield took both moto wins ahead of Becka Handy and Noah Baehnman. Yaya Nett went 6-4 for fourth overall while Mckenzie Geldernick finished fifth. In a combined class for the sport’s littlest bike riders, PeeWee 1 and 2, Noah Baehnman simply flies on his little Cobra. While he ran away to win PeeWee 2, there was a fun race behind him in PeeWee 1. Megan Funk on her KTM, and Mason Barth on his Honda pit together. Friends, they put on one of the closest races of the day. They rode side by side through both of their motos, frequently looking over at each other to see who would let off first coming into the corners. Funk took the win in each moto. My guess is as exciting as that was, the memories they’ll share in the future will be just as important. T

he 2008 D23/ARMCA Annual meeting and banquet was a hot ticket at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN on December 6th, 2008. A full crowd helped to wrap-up the season, take home awards and snatch up prizes when drawn. The Canterbury Park crew did a great job of hosting the meeting, social time, dinner and awards ceremony. The D23 board members gained sponsorship throughout the year that provided close to $50,000 in prizes to give away to those present at the ceremony. Many of the major sponsors were on hand with booths set up to give members a preview of their products and services. As always,

Gregg Wolfe, from MNRacing.com was on hand and running mad trying to get pictures of everything going on for the members. Chairman Mike Quinn facilitated and presented the annual meeting. Mike started off with recognizing that 2009 will be the 40th Anniversary of the D23/ ARMCA organization and we have a special logo design from Allison Larson, a D23 member. Considerable recognition also went out to some of our long standing members and founders. Dale Greenwald, Al Mathwig, Barney Larson, and Chip Donaho were thanked for their many years of continued service, and for being part of the District since its inception in 1969. Also a special thanks went out to Gerry Mathwig, Karen Larson, and Louisa Greenwald for their

important service to the off-road venues, especially in the early years. A detailed report was given of the number of district members and attendance numbers by venue. Membership was down a little bit. The attendance was down for motocross, hill climb, dirt track, and trials, but the off-road venues were up in 2008. Many officers and class representatives from the year were welcomed back with a few new ones for the 2009 season. Congratulations to the new class representatives, John Aune, Andy Terrell and Matt Stukel. The updated class representative list can be found on our website. The board discussed the season length and number of

As mentioned above, almost $50,000 in prizes were drawn and given out, interspersed between the awards. Lucky winners were drawn for products and services, including tires, goggles, gear, practice tickets and others, from all of the D23 sponsors. Race school scholarships were awarded to Maverick Engstrom, Andrew Peterson, Brandon Skaare and Jennie Carpenter out of

34 candidates that submitted essays and applications. The night wrapped up with the prize awarding of a 2008 Apex 90 Quad to Ryan Anderson from Root River Power Sports, a 2009 RM85 to Matthew Pelletier and a 2008 KX250F to Jamie Koch from Caswell Cycle. There was much talk of memories from the season and thoughts of the season to come. Everyone enjoyed the evening of camaraderie and relaxation with an optimistic look forward to the 2009 season.

Culver, Indiana - March 15

A

ny time you have a mid March motorcycle event in the midwest you are rolling the dice with mom nature. When it all works out, you end up being a hero, and usually have a great event. That was the exact situation this weekend as the Plymouth Blackhawks opened the 2009 District 15 Hare Scrambles season. Mid fifty degree temps, plenty of sun, and a great week of weather prior to this event held in north central Indiana led to one of the most pleasant openers most riders could remember. The trails were in great shape. Routing was done to avoid low lying spots, and the big bikes enjoyed a 4.5 course that wound around the couple hundred acre Culver site. Last year’s season for the club was a dismal one. Having lost an early event, then getting small turnouts at two others due to bad weather had left the group in a financial bind. This event was a very welcomed change of pace as nearly 200 entrants and a large number of spectators turned it into a real winner. The day started with the Mini Quad riders on one track, while the 65 and 85cc bikes ran on another, on the other side of the facility. Each group rode a part of what would be later combined to make up the much longer course for the big bikes and ATV’s. Lake City Honda backed Travis Pettit won the 90cc Quad class. “The start was pretty good as I came out first. It got harder in the second lap when we started to lap some of the other riders. The track was good, and dry. I like all the turns and sand here.” Payton Fleming had an exciting day to finish second. “I flipped twice. There were like these really steep trails, and I flipped off sideways. I got passed by a couple riders each time. I tried as hard as I could and went really fast and passed them back. It was so cool.” Justyn Wade, Tyler Cambe and Shelby Fleming rounded out the top five in the twelve rider quad class. Alex Witkowski had to work extra hard to get the win in the 85cc class. The Frazier Motorsports backed Witkowski is a hare scrambles regular, so he knows his way around the track for sure. Today he had some fast competition, and equally as challenging was that he was riding with a broken collar bone (oh, to be young again). Alex, “I broke my collar bone at a wrestling competition. I won the championship, but it hurts now. The race went pretty good. I was cruising in third off the start behind Keagan Lee. When we got to the grass track I was able to cut to the inside and move up to second. I could see Tyler Vore way out front already. I was trying to push it, and I finally caught up and got by him in the second lap. Then I fell and landed on my collar bone. It hurt, but I worked through it and managed to get in front, and then get away again.

The Mini Quad riders after finishing their race.

I thought the race was going to be real muddy, but it was good. A few spots got pretty rutted and rough, but I liked it.” Second place Tyler Vore, “It was pretty nice out there. Good getting the holeshot, and leading for a while. I’m just getting over the flu, so I never really felt good. I’ve always loved Plymouth, and the sand here. I only live a little ways away, and this was another fun race.” I had a decent start behind Tyler,” stated third place finisher Keagan Lee. “He just pulled away from me. I was running third, then I crashed once after hitting a tree. The track was good. I’d like to thank GBY Motorsports and Moose.” Lee plans to run the entire hare scrambles series this year. Younger brother of the 85cc class winner Alex also had a big opening day. Michael Witkowski took his Frazier Motorsports backed ride to the 65cc class win. “I got a good start, and then I led. Near the end I thought my shifter had come off. I couldn’t

change gears, so I had to ride the last lap in one gear. It is fun riding with the bigger 85cc bikes, as I can catch some of them and ride as good as they are.” Blake Ryan and Kayden Young finished second and third in the class. The big bikes were next, and they put on a great show. As the first wave worked through the grass field, two riders stood out right away. Heavy A class winner Charlie Deutscher was one of those two front runners. “The race went really good. They had an excellent track, and perfect weather.

Tischler and I battled for a lot of the race, and were really close for the first half

of it. He’s going really well, and it was good running together. I raced last weekend, so this is my second time out on the dirt. I have to admit, ice racing is easier and a lot of fun. This will really knock you into shape. I lost some time after hitting a lapper, and really tried to make up time, but he was on it and I struggled the last half hour. I rode in the snow here last fall, so this is my second Indiana District race, and I think they did a really nice job. I’m going to try and hit a few more of the area events this summer.” Light A class, and overall winner Tyler Tischler, “I was hoping for the holeshot and didn’t get, instead starting in second. When we came around to one of the checks he (Deutscher) made a little stumble and I managed to get around. After that he was right on me most of the race. He would catch up, then I would pull a gap again. I think I worked through the lappers better, just lucky with that. That can be one of the biggest problems, and it was really bad out there today. No one would let you by. The course was real fun today, and marked a lot better than it has ever been before. It had a good flow, and was fast... just how I like it.” Woodson Motorsports supported

Quad C rider Andrew Hochstetler.

CYCLE USA, April 2009

Patrick Flynn was pumped up after the two hour race. “I had a great day. Never fell, never stalled the bike. Just a text book day. This is my first race of the year, it was a good course, a little faster than usual as they had more quad trails, but a perfect opener. I think I won my class, and finished in the top five overall so it went great. I do a lot of the district events, and this is a perfect way to start the season.” Lynn did end up as the Senior A class winner. I grew up riding in the sand, so this is about as good as you could ask for,” stated Abe Cyr after taking his Yamaha to the Vet B class win. He’s more of a regular on the District 17 circuit, but there wasn’t a race in his area this weekend. “This is about the only time of the year that we can ride in sand like this, and I love it. Not sure how I did, but I had a good time no matter what. I was third off the start in our wave, then after that I just raced, and don’t know, or don’t really care where I finished, it was a good day.” Anthony Wagler won the Light B class on his YZ125. “It was a good smooth day. Pretty fast. I got stuck in the one mud hole, but managed to get out and catch back up to

everyone. It was a fun track, and I led most of the time except when I got stuck.” Hopefully, the opener is a sign of good things to come. Many of the districts have seen growth in their Hare Scrambles events, and District 15 has had a perfect start. Our advice, get out and ride... there’s a bunch of good times just waiting for you at every event... rain, snow, dust, or even a fantastic opening day like this one.

isconsin in January, there aren’t many opportunities to spend time with fellow racers - unless you are part of the crowd that goes ice racing, or riding indoors. The Triplecross banquet is a perfect setting for breaking up the long winter, and for the season’s participants, its time to celebrate accomplishments, and start looking forward to the new schedule. Returning to the very familiar Wintergreen Resort, the banquet had a great group of riders and their families attending. Riders in this series are often the same that race every weekend throughout District 16, so it is a pretty tight, and friendly group. Everyone first enjoyed another good meal, and then it was awards and door prize drawing time. Not one, but three pit bikes were given away this year, in addition to countless other goodies from all the sponsors. No one left empty handed, and many of the younger riders needed help carrying out their new found loot. Announcements were made on the changes coming for 2009. Schnabel, Conti Snare Mid-Cities Wins

J.R. Schnabel gets the holeshot in heavyweight. West Bend, Wisconsin - February 22 By Gordon Lunde

A

picture perfect winter day greeted the teams entered in the Mid-Cities Motorsports two hour charity ice race. Bright sunny skies and temps in the upper 20’s were perfect for a great race and brought out many spectators. Scott Schneiberg, owner of Mid –Cities Motorsports, has promoted this event for five years, and it gets better every year! This year’s race brought 45 teams of riders to Pier 144 on Lake Wallace for another fund raiser for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Washington County. At the end of the day roughly $2,500 had been collected for the charity. Some came to play, some came to train, and others to win. The track was 2.5 miles of smooth ice kept clean by an army of ATVs with plows that circulated almost the entire two hours of race time. A little discussion took place before the race concerning machines equipped with Canadian ice screws. At first the machines with Canadian screws were not going to be allowed to ride but, a compromise was met when the organizers offered to score those machines separately and give them there own class. A total of 5 machines ran the Canadian screws, three heavyweights and two middle weight bikes. J.R. Schnabel came to win. At the drop of the green flag Schnabel blasted out front and was never in jeopardy of losing the lead. His self sponsored RMz 450 Suzuki ran flawlessly the entire race and J.R. used the power to put down the fastest lap of the race at 2:06.301. Following Schnabel through turn one was Dan Jung, Dave Dupree and Benny Carlson with the rest of the 28 bike heavy52

weight class in tow. The second wave of bikes were middleweight machines and they were headed by Todd Walsdorff, Cole Walsdorff and Dean Hagemann. In lightweight competition John Stewart led the way followed by Dan Dricken and Brian Werbelow. The end of lap one saw Schnabel out front with Ben Carlson, John Stewart, Dan Jung and Dan Mischler battling for second place. By lap five J.R. had a ten second lead over Carlson and the rest of the field. After 30 minutes of racing Stewart had claimed second place, Carlson still held third and Jung sat in fourth place in heavyweight class and overall. In the middleweight group Cole Walsdorff led (6th overall) with John Rosine and Todd Walsdorff in tow. At about the 40 minute mark Carlson lost his clutch and called it a day. Jack Sutherland moved into third and bumped Jung back to fourth overall. Schnabel was still pulling away out front and Stewart was trying his best to close the gap.

One hour into the race and the positions were unchanged. With 90 minutes of the clock gone the top three remained the same but now John Rosine moved his middleweight Honda into fourth overall and led the middleweight class with Cole Walsdorff (5th overall and 2nd in class). Todd Walsdorff held down third in

class and sixth overall. At the finish it was all Schnabel going away with the victory after laying down 53 laps and 132.5 miles of competition. This win was a sweet taste of success after breaking down in his last two attempts at this event. John Stewart on his CRF450 Honda claimed second place and Jack Sutherland put his YZ450F Yamaha on the last podium

The event also had Quad racing, and Jason Conti definitely came out to win. The KTM450 Quad rider put a full lap on the rest of the field, completing 25 laps on the 2.5 mile track. While leading the event Conti took the opportunity to show off a little bit by riding big wheelies down the front straight. TJ Timblin took second place honors and Brad Thoma filled the last step on the podium. The kids came out to play also in a non scored mini event. The young ones ran for a ½ hour on a shortened course and all had a great time. Timing and scoring were provided by Glen Curtiss of Glenn Curtiss Motorsports. The organizers would like to offer a huge thank you to all the volunteers that made this event a success. See you next year! Results Overall: 1.J.R. Arenacross Comes to the

SANDBOX Richmond, Wisconsin - February 12 By Mike Anderson

A

msOil Sandbox has played host to many different events within the doors of its new facility; motocross, quad races, car racing and other motorsports. Spectators filled the bleachers Saturday night to take in the Sandbox’s first Arenacross. Some of the fastest riders ever to compete in Arenacross showed up Saturday night with the hopes of taking home some of the guaranteed race purse. Photographers found themselves pointing their cameras toward the rafters more than normal due to the amount of high flying rhythm sections and the largest finish line jump the Sandbox has ever had built. All qualifiers, with the exception of the pro classes, were held early in the day to determine gate pick for the main event. With the qualifiers out of the way, the main events were ready to begin. The first big race of the night was for the Arenacross Pro riders. The gate dropped, and Tommy Hofmaster got a great jump off the line, rounding the first

Tommy Hofmaster had great results with a win and a second in the Pro classes.

Gavin Faith had a good night taking the Lites class win.

Jade Dungey was running a solid third before a fall took him out for the evening.

corner in the lead. As they headed through the first and roughest line of whoops Gavin Faith passed Hofmaster only to give the position back to Hofmaster in the very next corner. Hofmaster moved inside with a great block pass, almost sending Faith into the soft blocks. Faith did not give up and on lap four passed Hofmaster again through the woops, holding it this time. While these two battled for the lead, Jade Dungey was holding a solid third waiting for someone to make a mistake. Half-way through the moto Faith had pulled a four to five bike lead on Hofmaster. Dungey was slowly closing when his front end pushed out at the end of the whoop section, sending him down hard. This left Dungey out of the race, and Hofmaster chasing Faith with five laps left. With three laps left, and at the very same spot Faith had made the passes for the lead, he lost his handle bars. He didn’t go down, but hit his chest so hard on the bars he was forced to pull off the track. Hofmaster continued on for the win ahead of Kevin Markwardt of Freeport, IL and

Matt Maier of Hartford, WI in third. The little guys and gals in the 65cc class also put on a good show. Chad Saultz of Illinois was amazingly fast on this tough Arenacross track. Saultz pulled a great holeshot only to go down hard midway through the whoops right after corner one. This left Nickolas Manning with the lead, Jake Nethery chasing his rear wheel and Saultz quickly getting back on pace in third. By lap three Saultz had taken over the lead, and was on a mission to start lapping riders. Harrison Gulick of River Falls, WI was also moving through the pack, and had now moved up to Nethery’s rear tire for third. While Saultz ran away with the race, these two battled the entire way, even hitting each other a couple times. Nethery held the hard charging Gulick off, earning second overall. In the Arenacross lights class Gavin Faith pulled out all the stops, rounding corner one with the holeshot, never looking back. Hofmaster kept Faith in sight in this moto, but Faith was clearly determined and not ready

to settle for second. This time he worked his way through the race without making any mistakes. Faith wanted to make up for letting the Pro class get away from him, and he sailed away with the overall. Hofmaster rode conservatively for second leaving Maier in third. +25 was the eldest class of the night. Mike Little of River Falls, WI and Josh Patzoldt of Pine City, MN raced one of the closest races of the night. During their qualifying race the two traded the lead four or five times, until Patzoldt made a small mistake giving Little the win. In the main event the two were repeating the qualifier until Patzoldt followed Little into a berm so close that on the exit he hit Little’s rear tire so hard that he went down. Little went on to take the main event win. Throughout the night, awards were given after each main event, giving special recognition to the winning riders of the Sandbox’s first

Arenacross race. The stands were full of fans watching the fastest racers take the track at the arena. There was a special feeling in the air that Saturday night. The track was unbeatable, and the racing was even better. We really look forward to next year’s 2nd annual AmsOil Sandbox Arenacross race.

Chad Saultz ran off with the 65cc class win.
