ATV Racing changes in Byron The following is a letter from Aaron Vincer, promoter/ owner Motosports Park in Byron Illinois.
A
s you may have read at motobyron.com back in February, Motosports Park has made some big changes for the 2016 season. We have decided to close the Hilltop track. This decision comes after long consideration over the course of several seasons. For many years we have tried to keep the Hilltop program alive despite cost being higher than revenue. There were many challenges from soil composition to distance and timing issues from the Legacy track. Our ATV racers lodged constant and sometimes angry complaints that they didn’t want to race the ‘kids track’. This issue reached critical mass this winter and choices had to be made. Ultimately we want to give our customers a high quality product. We feel consolidating our efforts into one track is the best option. There are many tracks across the country that do not allow ATV’s. At Motosports
Park we have been racing ATV’s since they had 3 wheels. We feel ATV racing is an important part of motocross and inclusion is critical. That said, we also have a responsibility to provide the best possible race conditions for our motorcycle racers. Over the years, expectations on course prep and design have elevated. Meeting these expectations is difficult on single day +ATV Legacy track events. We understand this is not a popular decision among the ATV community. We have never wanted to say no to our customers and friends. The bottom line is hard decisions had to be made and this is ours. Now some good news. For the last eleven seasons ATV racing has not been available on the Legacy track. Last year we piloted ATV racing over a two-day event with good results. These classes were run early both days regardless of weather. The extra time in a two-day, three moto format allows us to provide a quality track for both motorcycles and ATV’s. We feel this compromise is really an opportunity for growth. We hope the ATV community will see this
as a much better product less often. In 2016 we are offering four days of ATV racing on the Legacy track at our highest profile Memorial Day and Labor Day events, with the best quality course and conditions we can provide. This is an opportunity to showcase and feature the incredible talent our Midwest ATV racers have in a way not possible in previous years. This change elevates the prestige of the ATV Nuclear Series Championship. ATV racing is back on the legacy track for the first time in over a decade.

CYCLE USA, April 2016
Early in the day’s lineup was the 65cc 7-11 class. With sixteen riders, the class was split into two heats. All the riders would go to the main, but heats were important for gate positions. James Orres got a good jump off the line and led through the first turn, quickly pulling a couple bike lengths through the first lap.
Then in the second lap, Ronnie Orres caught fire. He closed the gap, and made a move for the lead. It looked like he would pull away, but then James climbed back into it. The two ran fender to fender till the end to finish in that order ahead of Tanner Schlegel and Wyatt McGrath. In the second heat, Garrett Becker led from start to finish. Colby Ostbye kept it close for second, just a ways ahead of Brodie Boumeester and Braxton Williamson. The final lined up later in the day, and the same crowd from the first heat race dominated the moto. James Orres made it through the first turn in the lead, and this time ran a perfect moto. Orres, “I got the holeshot and then stayed in the lead all the way. I hit all my jumps and whoops well. I like the whoops the best, but it is all fun. I’d like to thank my Dad, and my uncle James.” As Orres ran out front, Wyatt McGrath quickly made his way around Colby Ostbye for second. Half way through the moto, Tanner Schlegel and Ronnie Orres made it around Becker for third and fourth, setting the final order out front. The Women’s class had some more good racing. In the first moto, Leea Niesen, Sophie Johnson, and Miranda Tweeton went through the first turn and following jump sections three wide. In the first big bermed corner, Niesen took over out front. They stayed close, and half way into the second lap Tweeton kicked it up a bit, sliding all the way up into the lead. The order held for two laps, then Niesen started pushing Tweeton. Working for half a lap, it finally paid off and she re-took the lead, this time for good. Johnson finished third ahead of Kourtney Trautner and Shayna Wunderlich. In the second moto, Johnson had the best reaction and led through the first rhythm section. Niesen went under Johnson in the first big corner for the lead, and Tweeton dropped into second half way into the lap. The three stayed close to finish in the same order, and Niesen happily took the overall on her Kawasaki. Eight riders, from four states lined up in the 250A class. Minnesota’s Nick
Jackson timed the gate best and led the group out of the first turn. On his heels, South Dakota’s Austin Kienast wasn’t about to make it easy for Jackson. Back just a couple bike lengths, Wisconsin’s Talan Hansen was leading Chad Noaeill and Brandon Biggs. Two laps in and Jackson slowed for a moment, looking down at his rear wheel. After Kienast slipped by, Jackson spent part of the lap looking a little hesitant, but then quickly got back up to full speed. Turns out he may have caught some dirt or something in his rear brake, but it resolved itself, and he wanted the lead position back. As they went into the last lap, Jackson forced an opening and went on for the win ahead of Kienast and Hansen. Jackson was fast of the start in the second moto, this time holding the lead all the way. Kienast and Hansen went 2-3 in the moto and overall. Jackson also had the program down in the Open A class, winning both motos for another overall ahead of Daniel Cortines and Chase Becker. Part of the good turn-out, was nice sized 50cc classes. Its great seeing these kids get the year-round riding time to keep sharpening their skills. How big does that have to play out in the future for these youngsters. In the 50cc 7-8 class, nine riders put on a good show. Wisconsin’s Wyatt McGrath has been fast most of his young career, but seeing him whip his Cobra backed ride around the technical arena was impressive. McGrath popped out to the lead right away and never looked back. Jumping most of the obstacles on par with many of the big bikes, he rode away for the win. Behind him, and still with plenty of speed, Braxton Kragenbrag had his hands full holding off Owen Blakey. The two went at it all five laps, holding the positions they secured out of the first turn. Nathan Waldron held fifth all the way. McGrath was just as dominant in the second moto. This time, Blakey had the better start, and Kragenbrag was left to do his best to move up. The two were close, as Kragenbrag tried to find a faster line, but it just wasn’t to be. Blakey held on for second, taking the runner-up sport overall then as well. The 50cc 4-6 class saw one of the closest battles all day. In the first moto, James Schaffer led early, but then was

pushed his KTM back past Hastings. These two kept this up through the next
two laps. Mean time, Jayden Adams was in third, locked into a close race with Kai Morgan. The back and forth comtinued right to the last lap. Out front, Hastings began the lap side by side with Schaffer. Neither rider was letting off. As they entered yet another bowl corner Hastings pushed to the inside, and washed out his front wheel, hitting the ground. Schaffer rode to the win, as the others slipped past Hastings. Morgan used the last lap to make a final move on Adams for second. Ashton Thomas and Beau Noaeill rounded out the top five in a moto that had everyone looking impessed afterwards. Morgan was fast off the start and led the first lap before Schaffer took over. Morgan dropped a couple spots after a quick fall and recovery. Adams held down second as Hastings was moving up following a bad start. By the third lap, he had already moved up to second, wanting a shot at Schaffer, maybe trying to make up for the tip over in moto one. As Hastings got close on the last lap, once again he went down. Adams snuck back into second. Hastings was up quick enough to finish third. Schaffer’s smart
rides earned the overall, while Adams put himself in the right spot both motos for second. It just seemed like all the classes were stacked with talent. In the 85cc 9-11 group, Jordan Biese made the trip west for some seat time well worth it. Biese put his Husqvarna out front and slowly inched away, putting in perfect laps for the win. Cole Godfrey put his KTM into second during the first lap, but had Eli Tetzlaff on his rear fender right away. Southeast Sales/ Team Green/ Jessie Williams/ 100%/ Fly backed Tetzlaff, “I had a good start, and rode well. I found a good inside line in the back of the track and passed Cole, then just rode smooth and finished second. I don’t get here often, but always like it because they keep changing things.” Godfrey finished a solid third as Jake Paige and Ronnie Orres filled the top five in the fourteen rider class. In moto two, Biese had to make up for a bad start. FMF/ OC Racing/ Fly/ Scott/ Powersports 1 Husqvarna backed Biese after the moto, “I didn’t get the same jump off the line this time, I just hooked up too much and bogged a bit. The race
went well though. I really worked the corners for my passing and made it to the
front for the win. It was a good race, and fun out there.” Kai Morgan finished second in the 50cc Open 4-8 class.

Biese worked up from fifth. First getting by Ronnie Orres, then Godfrey and eventually Tetzlaff. It took two laps, but once out front the moto was all his. 85cc 9-12 had many of the same riders, but with sixteen total, they ran heats for a main event. After a five lap non stop battle for the lead, Eli Tetzlaff took the first heat win ahead of Tyler Otterdahl, Cole Godfrey and Curtis Biorn. The second heat saw two Husqvarnas out front. Jake Paige grabbed the holeshot before getting passed by Jordan Biese. The two eventually opened a fair gap on Nolyn Hempel and Easton Block. In the main Otterdahl held tough out front for the opening lap, as Biese sliced from outside to inside looking for an opening. As they started lap two, Biese found a line and took it to the win. Tetzlaff gave Otterdahl everything he had as the two ran in for second and third. Even the Vet classes were filled with well known fast guys. In +30, Iowa’s Scott Mericle showed the quick way
around the track in the first moto. Benny Vancleve ran in second early, then slipped back a couple spots as Bill Ahlers and Courtney Sampson moved up. Racing Unlimited’s Kawasaki rider Mericle after the win, “ I had a good start, and out front by myself right away. I’ll take that any day, as I could then just put in my laps. I love it up here. For us to have a place to ride here in the midwest is really appreciated. I come up from Iowa as often as possible to ride.” The order was the same in the second moto, with Mericle leading each lap after another good jump off the line. Rockford, IL’s Justin Peterson led the 250B class through the first lap, then set a pace to distance himself by the end for the win. Ian Malinowski battled with Supermini mounted Carter Biese through the first lap. After swapping spots twice, Biese took over second. Shane Page was in the mix early, as was Logan Hyland. Hyland kept charging after a bad start, passing Page, then on the last lap, Mali-
nowski to finish in third, just behind Biese. Peterson was a no-show for the main, after bike problems in another class. Malinowski led early, but a hard charging Biese made the pass at the start of lap two. Malinowski kept him honest, as he had to keep Hyland off his rear fender. The three finished that way, with Colton Steiger fourth ahead of Logan Kittock. The Biese brothers had completed a big day, sweeping four overalls. OC Racing/ Husqvarna/ FMF/ Fly/ Powerband rider Carter Biese after his win in 250B, when asked about racing the Supermini bike against the bigger 250’s, “Out here, the biggest difference is coming off the line. From there, I can make it work. I still got good starts and just had to make my moves later on. The track was good, and I kept my lines tight and it went well.” The 250C class was big, and after the heats everyone lined up for the final. Austin Kristiansen led from start to finish. Coming out of one of the first corClose racing in the 85cc 9-12 class; #66 Tyler Otterdahl, #49 Eli Tetzlaff and #38 Conner Klemenhagen.
ners, four riders went down behind Kristiansen, allowing him an almost uncontested lead, with the exception of some pressure put on by Spencer Hansmann. Star Cycle/ MotoKazie/ Team Solo/ Black Diamond/ ProAction rider Kristiansen, “The track is perfect. I got past that mess in the first turn so it went nice and easy out front. Sucks for everyone
getting caught up in it, but I’m happy I got clear right away. My bike worked perfectly, and it was a good night in the heat race and this one.” By the time you see this, the indoor season will have concluded, giving way to an early Spring, hopefully. If you’re looking to stay in touch with some excellent riding, or close racing next winter,
keep the Cedar Lake Arena in mind. We have yet to talk to anyone that wasn’t fully impressed with what it has to offer. Forest City Riders’ Weekend Dual Sport - Enduro combination finds great success
First Minute on the Starting Line – Cheers! for the Starter (or maybe it’s drop the flag already)
Leaf River, Illinois - November 7/8, 2015 By Wayne Baer
S
eems like old times rolled around again, when the Forest City Riders M/C put on their first Enduro in four years: The First Annual Bill Maxey Enduro. To honor the club’s co-founder, this first inaugural event was held in Bill’s name. He was a pioneer in off-road events, a long-time national/ regional enduro rider, AMA congressman, and District 17 founder among his many accomplishments. A dual-sport event was held on Saturday, a day before the Enduro, to maximize the off-road sections and provide more saddle time. The Black Hawk Trails Dual Sport was not a tribute to the hockey team, but commemorates the tragic Sauk Indian chief with his exploits and wanderings along the Rock River. [An interesting side trip is about 10 miles east of the start line to see The Battle of Stillman’s Run. This was the first volley in the Black Hawk war.] The Leaf River complex hosted the event, with their amazing indoor facilities. Plenty of hot coffee, donuts, and food for the riders sign-in was on tap in the cafeteria. They are located about twenty miles southwest of Rockford Illinois, so getting there was a breeze. The weekend turned into perfect Indian 16

Summer days, with clear sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-fifties. A slight amount of rain fell a few days before the event, just enough to provide great traction. Unusually warm weather has graced Northern Illinois this November, allowing the riders a late season treat with no tricks.
Ron Maxey is presented a plaque by Ride Director Ryan Moss.
The Saturday Dual Sport ride was a mix of off-road single track, open fields, a few hero sections, and country roads. The loop was a little over thirty miles long with most people running two loops, three for AA & A riders. To increase the “competition”, a optional Poker Run was added in the mix for those who were interested. The winner was a natural full-house from a D16 rider that covered his entry fee and lots more, with $335. Attendance soared to 326 riders due to the great weather, and the cancelled Brushpopper’s dualsport event from the previous weekend. Many riders also attended the enduro on Sunday, tallying 127 entries. A commemorative plaque was presented to Bill Maxey’s son Ron during the riders meeting. Ron also held the honor of starting the field. Five riders per minute got the entire field running in about thirty minutes. The C class was well represented with thirty-four riders.
The format was very easy: re-start format - no time keeping needed, 2 or 3 loops depending on class, start/finish line in the corner of the pits, giving about 45 minutes to rest and refuel between loops. Each loop was 22 miles of entirely offroad riding, including several test sections and one OB check. Each loop had a wide variety of offroad terrain that kept the riders busy. Some very tight single-track woods started to spread the riders out at the beginning. This opened up to corn field crossings, then back into some technical work along the Leaf River. The layout combined many elements that blended together well. Many positive comments about the course, condition, layout, and volunteers were received. As an added bonus, each enduro rider received a free meal coupon which could be redeemed at the complex cafeteria for a sandwich and drink. The volunteers at the complex were wonderful. A crowd favorite was the BBQ pulled pork, with the grilled cheeseburgers a close second. The first annual Bill Maxey Enduro Overall A Champion was JD Friebel, followed closely by Matt Dissell then Matt Adams. A fitting trophy was awarded to JD for his efforts. JD hails from Pulaski, WI and has been riding mostly hare scrambles and enduro events this year around the midwest. In second, Matt Dissell kept things very close right down to the last turn, logging 126:22 points. Matt’s efforts after three loops came up short by a mere 0:28 points that separated him from the champion. Missing from the AA mix was hometown hotshoe Ryan Moss. Moss directed the layout, riders meeting, entries, scoring, and trophy awards. The Moss fam-
ily was well represented by Alex, who had healed up from his arm injury in August. He finished a respectable seventh place in C class. The Overall B Champion was Andrew Ballard (D17) with 91.07 points for two loops. He was followed by Paul Biggerstaff and Carter Shelton. Let’s not overlook another performance of note. Rich Mertes in the Grand Masters class once again is atop the podium. Even the loss of his backpack during the ride didn’t slow him down. He has also captured top honors for the season, outdistancing second place by over 100 points. And the backpack was turned in by the sweep crew, so no worries there. What a perfect event: great weather, fantastic layout, and a large turnout… What are the chances?
Pat Reilly (above, left) found Linda and Stan Szlachciuk at the rider entry table for the Bill Maxey Enduro. Pat was working the entry forms for the Forest City Riders, and Stan was ready to enter the ride. The long-lost buddies hadn’t seen each other for more than 5 years. Back in the day, they had some great races due to their matched skill levels, and same rides (1992 Yamaha WR200’s – “the best bike I’ve ever owned” says Pat). Over 20 years ago they developed a fast friendship out on the enduro circuit that has continued to this

Kold Kutter Cash Heats it up Tomah, Wisconsin - Janury 24 Kold Kutter Mid-Season Championship
T
he Tomah event for the Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association usually marks sort of a mid-season point. With the late start to the 2016 season, and very cold opener in Fremont, this day of upper 20’s, and perfect ice was just what the ice crew needed. A shot of good racing can help everyone forget a crapy start... and it did just that. A large turnout, great racing, and bonus prestige and cash thanks to Kold Kutter ice screws made this a must attend event. For all those that came out, the day met all expectations. Racing kicked off mid-morning, and right away we had plenty of action to enjoy out on the ice. The 250 Amateur GP class saw Weston, WI’s Travis Leu run off with both moto wins. Behind him, Dave Jelinek ran in second. Through both motos, Jelinek was pushed right to the end by Corey Schroeder, as Noah Baehnman finished fourth. The Open GP Quad class final saw Ryan Bruggeman out front on the start with Graham Eichmiller and Tyler Martin all over him. The three were bumping all through the first lap. As they exited the

The three ran close the remaining laps, holding that order ahead of Zack Raab and the six other riders. With the added payout in the Kold Kutter classes, there was a larger group also
racing in the Open Pro Motorcycle class. With fifteen riders, heats ran to determine gate picks for the winner takes all final. In heat one, Roy Nafzger set himself apart, leading from start to finish ahead of Soren La Valley and Austin Hamburgur. Right from the start of the second heat, John Strangfeld led. He pulled a bit of a gap early, then saw Nick Blumer close up on him in the final lap ahead of Jesse Leu. No surprise this group of riders stood out, but it was a reminder of how close the final would likely be later in the day.

When the final came to the line, it happened to follow a Pro GP Kold Kutter final earlier in the program. That final saw some very close racing between Nafzger and Strangfeld resulting in a protest and eventual adjustment in who was scored as the winner of the race. This just added fuel to the competitive battle we all expected here. The race set up as anticipated - Nafzger got the jump and led Strangfeld into the first turn. As the fifteen riders screamed around the oval, Nick Blumer locked in third ahead of Hamburgur. They were all close, but by lap two Nafzger and Strangfeld had pulled out a little. The pace was intense, and Nafzger was the first to make a slight error, slipping off the main line in turn one. Strangfeld went right to the inside, wide open and pulled three bike lengths out of turn two. It was all over from that point... Strangfeld took the win. Parts Unlimited rider Strangfeld after the race, “Roy and I got a simular jump and I had to chase him. We were going into the third lap and really pushing it. Roy just came into turn one a little hot and got out of the groove and I was able to get the line. Our speed is so close out there today it is coming down to starts, and who doesn’t make a mistake. The overcast conditions have the ice in perfect shape, so racing on it is really good.” Russell Bradley won his heat race in the 450 Pro class ahead of Alec Muth. Then Roy Nafzger came out in the next heat, scoring a win ahead of Austin Hamburgur. In the Main, Hamburgur got out front and held off constant pressure from Nafzger and Blumer. Hamburgur, “It was an awesome race. I got the holeshot and it was good. I fought the bike and stuff during the heat race and finished fourth. The start made all the difference, and not fighting the bike so much. This is my first year ice racing in the A class, so I’m still getting up to speed out there. I got into this because of Jason Heindl and my girlfriend Sierra. It is a lot of fun, and this win is great.” For the Quad Open Pro 20

riders, Kold Kutter cash was on the line, paying deep into the class. Three heat races determined the line picks for the ten rider final. That meant only half the riders entered would move on. The first heat saw an old school, but very fast Yamaha 2 stroke take the win, ridden by Mitchel Williams, as he pulled from Travis Weller. Second heat had Tyler Martin of Kendal, WI win ahead of Shaun Winkler and Kodi Wells. The final heat was the closest of them all. Craig Melville was on it hard, making a second
lap pass on Mike Mueller while Ryan Bruggeman finished third. In the main, Tyler Martin grabbed the holeshot, and right away had to go on the defense as Craig Melville was all over him in the opening lap. As they went into lap two, Melville did the unthinkable, and used an outside part of the track to go the long ways around Martin and take the lead. The two rode in those positions while Wes Asbach locked up third ahead of Travis Weller and Graham Eichmiller.
Mason Barth won both the Open and 250 Amateur classes.
Full gates were the norm in both the bike, and quad classes.

Johnson brothers top the Bay
Sonny Johnson and #57 Parker Lange locked in battle.
Oshkosh, Wisconsin - February 6 By Gordon Lunde
A
chilly winter day brought out the best in brothers Christian and Sonny Johnson at the annual Otter Street ice races on Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh, WI. The brothers shared a 2012 Honda 450 and claimed the most victories on the day. Of ten total races, Sonny took two victories and a second place while Christian won two races and grabbed a third in the final event. Brad Boughton was the first race winner as he took the checkered flag in the Senior’s class. This year twelve riders lined up for the final, with the most racers in any class for the day. On the other end of the spectrum, Ethan Rosine took the victory over Nicholas Johnson and Loyal Prach in the 85cc youth class. Christian Johnson was the first brother to strike in 450 Pro action as he ran out front the entire race. The Hesbeck Engines/
Johnson Autobody/ RBI Industries/ sponsored rider won the race going away. Christian repeated in the Open Pro class with another runaway victory and took third in the Canadian Screw Pro-Am event. Sonny Johnson’s first victory came in the 450 class. Johnson led the entire race in front of Caleb Larson and Tyler Rosine, who battled hard for second place.
Late in the race Larson slipped and Rosine got by while Mike Moore slid past for third place. Sonny is sponsored by Hesbeck Motors and Diane Johnson. Sonny went on to take the win in Open Amateur and second in the 250 class. The always popular Vintage/ Twins class had five riders in the final, and they were led to the checkered flag by Triumph mounted Dan Vrana. The DVR Enterprises/ Fred Petis/ Mike’s Motorsports rider took the lead early and held off Todd Lefeber on his Yamaha and Joe Stoppleworth, also Yamaha mounted, for the win. Two quad classes were combined and Hayden Reitz rode his Oregon Coastal Powersports/ Reitz racing/ Meilke Racing/ Dutch Motorsports Honda to victory in the Open Quad class. In Open Pro Quad, Zach Zwirchtz took the class victory aboard his JSF Racing/ Magoo’s Speed Shop/ Dunrite Construction Honda. Zach had a bad start, getting tied up in traffic, but once clear, he flew to the front of the pack. Continued on page 27 Ethan Rosine won the 85cc class CYCLE USA, April 2016

Mama Tried Show/ Race UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena Wilwaukee, Wisconsin - February 19 By Gordon Lunde
T
he Mama Tried motorcycle show began a couple of years ago in an old warehouse in downtown Milwaukee. The show is a success in all ways. Huge attendance and media coverage bringing in invited bike builders from across the country. As successful events go, someone always wants to get in on the action. Step forward Jeremy Prach who approached the Mama Tried people about adding indoor motorcycle races to the program. An agreement was made and the first indoor motorcycle races were to be run the Friday evening before the Mama Tried show. The very first Mama Tried Flat Out Friday indoor motorcycle races. An agreement was made with the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena to use their indoor hockey facility for the event. Dr. Pepper soda syrup was applied to the concrete floor to provide traction. The application on the 1/10 mile oval began in the early morning hours because the syrup has to dry for a minimum 8 hours to provide the stickiness for traction. There were going to be some normal flat track classes like Amateur, Pro, Vintage and such, but then there were also the Hooligan and Goofball classes. To say these were different isn’t telling the truth. They were VERY different! In addition Roland Sands was in attendance with his Indian Scout Sixty Super Hooligan Team of bikes and riders. Prach hired starter to the stars AMA Pro flat track flag man Kevin Clarke to preside over the start finish line. Clarke put on his usual great show of expertise at the line. With double 26

checker waves at the finishes and his flourish with the flags, he kept the huge crowd entertained all night. Heat races and semis were run to set the fields for the final events. To show
how well the races were run, twenty-two heat races were completed in one hour! That is an amazing feat for any program. During riders meeting the riders were told, “Sorry Pros, but you are not the show here tonight. Your races are important and you need to put on a good show, but the stars tonight are the Hooligans and Goofballs. This is what the people are coming to see.” It was discussed that although they all are racers, they also need to go to work on Monday. They need to put on a good show, but be safe and entertain the crowd is of utmost importance. Well, they succeeded in putting on a great show, and entertain they did! In front of an estimated 10,000 fans, the first final of the night was the Brakeless class. Danny Vrana jumped into the lead in turn one, but left the inside door open just a little and Terry Vestal stuck his front wheel in. The two came together and before they separated again some damage was done to Vrana’s bike forcing him out of the action. Vestal went on to a commanding victory. Finishing second was Matt McNall, who was told by a doctor many years ago to take up some exercise to help his heart problems. Well, he chose motorcycle road racing and did that for many years. He has since quit road racing but you can find him at the AMA District 16 flat track races nearly every week. The Amateur class had a bit of a battle to finish as many racers crashed. Nearly all were able to get back into the race, but the race order was shuffled constantly. In the end, it was Trey Johnson taking the checkered flag followed closely by Jacob Walter and Rob Reitz. The Pro class was a star studded event with several nationally ranked AMA flat trackers involved. Jake Mataya was the man in this event leading all the way. Jesse Janisch and Jeremy
DeRuyter had a great battle going until they both went down late in the race. Jake Cunningham and local favorite Charlotte Kainz filled in the top three at the flag. The Hooligan final saw some great racing from former AMA Pro Superbike and Supermoto rider Benny Carlson. Riding the Suburban Motors XR1200, he was able to close on the field and work his way through traffic precisely to keep his challengers behind him. It was a great show of excellent ridership to take the top spot on the podium. The final event of the evening was the Goofball class consisting of anything you wanted to put on the track. Only rule, rubber or duct tape covered foot pegs, so if you crashed the concrete floor would not get damaged. Prince‌ I mean Ronnie Zastrow, was the showman of the evening. Big Brothers/Big Sisters Race West Bend, Wisconsin - February 14 By Gordon Lunde
E
ddie’s Lake House on Wallace Lake, hosted a charity ice race on Valentines Day for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Washington County (WI). This annual event is held to raise money for this great organization. An all volunteer crew runs the event and a local snowmobile club provides food and hot refreshments on the bar’s patio. A 3.5 mile road course style track is laid out on the lake for this once a year event. The local ice fishermen take the day off and leave the frozen surface to a bunch of riders that love ice racing. The first race of the day is a kids “ride”. A thirty minute, non-scored fun event for the young riders. Of course, the competitor in them is no different than the older riders, so they were dueling for positions just as though the race was for a world championship. Some of these kids looked to have some serious talent and will be running in local flat track events in the near future. The second race is for teams of riders or individuals challenging the 3.5 mile course on machines using AMA legal ice screws. Early laps saw the 328 Powersports B Team battling with JR Schnabel and Eric Mischler for the lead. Jacob Jeskno and Tim Beckman also mixed it up the entire race staying on the lead lap. Unknown to Schnabel, his bike had developed an oil leak. Just past the mid point of the race his engine seized, putting an end to his challenge. Fuel stops and rider changes mixed up the results, and in the end, it was Eric Mischler riding solo on the Mischler’s H-D KTM 450 taking the win with twenty-eight laps completed. Only two other rid30

ers finished on the same lap, Jacob Jeskno on the Jeskno Racing Yamaha 250 and Tim Beckman riding the Team JJ Honda CR250. The third and final event was the Canadian tire race. The riders on these machines use the much more aggressive Canadian ice screw. These screws dig into the ice much better and make the track much more difficult to ride for the AMA legal ice screw riders because of all the ice shavings they raise. The AMA screwed tires are not able to dig through the shavings for proper
Canadian Screws, nothing but traction on the ice

traction. This is why the event was split into two separate races. Parker Lange, Jeremy DeRuyter and Brad Thoma fought hard for the win early in the race. Lange riding solo, was able to stay close to the front and, without having to make a rider change, able to get in the lead and hold it. DeRuyter rode the first half of the event then handed over the controls to Jesse Janisch. Janisch
managed to catch and pass Lange on the last lap of the race, but Lange was a full lap ahead by that time and took the win. Thoma’s teammate, Brad Rosine, put on a great charge also, finishing third. Eddie’s Lake House was a great host. The friendly atmosphere and great service helped make the event a success. Please stop in and show them you appreciate their support of this event when you’re in the area. We hope to Brady Lange see you at this event next year to support Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Washington County. You’ll see great racing and have a good time, all for a good cause. When it was all done and said, this year the event raised more than $5200 for Joe Stoppleworth the charity. having fun

incoln Trail Motosports hosted round one of the 2016 Fly Showdown series presented by Scott Sports and Dunlop on the Bomber track. Very mild weather has allowed Lincoln Trail to have two ride-day weekends and to host the first District 17 event - the Snowflake Shootout back in February. These all took place on the Classic track, so Saturday practice on the Bomber track (after sitting all winter) left it rutted and rough. Corners had so many lines it looked like a slot car track. Sunday the racers were welcomed to a perfectly groomed track. It looked like cake. With almost 400 entries, the LTM crew did a great job all day keeping the track safe and providing great racing. With such a strong turnout it looks like the series is going to be a great one for 2016. Today was also round two of the LTM track championship, with District 17 points as usual. It was a great weekend and good to be back on the Bomber track! There was one rider at the track in particular that everyone was glad to be able to watch and study his lines. That was District 17 rider Chase Sexton who has been signed to the Factory Connection/ Geico Honda team. It’s great to see a District rider sign with a powerful pro team, and Chase grew up racing a lot at
Chase Sexton was as impressive as anyone could have ever expected.
these local events. When you see him ride you realize right away why he was signed, because he is very fast and smooth. In the first moto of 250A, Sex-
ton had his Honda flying out front for the win. Kawasaki rider Channing Hunt finished second ahead of Matthew Bell, David Howard and Honda rider Keeze Carver. In the second moto it didn’t take Sexton long to get out front, but while out there he made his only mistake I saw, tipping over in the corner after the uphill whoops. With a comfortable lead Sexton remounted and went back to attacking the track to the end. Hunt placed his Kawasaki across the line second for the moto and overall. Derrick Boyd with the early jump in Open A.
In the Open A first moto Sexton had his Honda out front and trucking. The race was behind him between Honda rider Derrick Boyd and Hunt. On the last lap Boyd and Hunt were still charging as Hunt found a way around to finish second. In the second moto it was as easy as 1-2-3 with the riders placing themselves in the same spots. +40 may have offered up one of the closest races of the day. There was twelve riders in the class and don’t let their age fool you, these dudes were fast! In the first moto Marty Vaughn found his way into the lead off the start. This is nothing new as Vaughn has been a quick rider for a very long time. What I didn’t expect was Jason Stills and how fast he was. On the first lap Vaughn was out front, Stills was all over him in second, and KTM rider David Stouer was third. On the second lap Arek Kruk made the pass on Stouer for third. While this was heating up, the action out front was boiling! Vaughn and Stills 34

down hard before the downhill sending him to the truck for the rest of the day. Stills took the moto win and overall. Kruk finished second ahead of David Stouer who had his KTM twostroke on the gas. Fly Super Series is just a title, right? Wrong. WPS rep Adam Wright was on hand to race and have some fun, not pushing it because he wasn’t in shape. Well that’s what he said at the riders meeting so I’m guessing he wasn’t expecting to be in the middle of one of the best battles of the day. Not in one class, but two. In the first +25A class Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond took off with the lead. Wright was hot on his heals with started trading spots with Stills eventuKawasaki rider Daniel Biba third. On the ally taking the lead and holding it to the third lap Wright pulled the trigger and finish. Vaughn finished second with made the pass to take the win, leaving Kruk third. In the second moto Stills had Deadmond second and Biba third. In the his Kawasaki right where he left off, out second moto Wright snagged the front. Vaughn was tight in tow and on the holeshot and this time it was the second lap made the pass for the lead. Kawasaki of Biba that was in tow. On Stills kept putting pressure on Vaughn, lap three Biba made the move on Wright but when they came around for the third and into the lead. Biba held on for the lap Stills was all alone. Vaughn went moto and overall win. Deadmond finished third for the moto and overall. In the +30A class, the same suspects were back for battle and they didn’t disappoint. In the first moto Wright was just where he wanted to be, in the lead off the start. It held until the last lap when Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond passed Wright for the win, Biba in third. In the second moto Biba made the move into second, passing Deadmond early in the second lap. On the third lap he passed Wright to move into the lead Corey Deadmond & Adam Wright battling in +30A
and after more close racing they finished in that order. Best part it created a threeway tie on points! With the second motos being the tie breaker Biba took the overall. What great racing!! Spindler wins Mille Lacs Midwest Ice Racing Association Garrison, Minnesota - February 13 By Tim McBride
T
he Midwest Ice Racing Association held round three of their championship series on Minnesota’s iconic Lake Mille Lacs, hosted by Eddy’s Resort. The frosty minus sixteen degree wake-up call from Mother Nature didn’t thwart 160 race entries from competing in a total of 25 classes. However, temps did rise to the upper single digits by mid-day and the sun was shining, so if you are from Minnesota or Wisconsin it would be categorized as a perfect ice racing day. Superior Wisconsin native Cole Spindler almost had a perfect day by topping two out of a possible three classes. Spindler won the overall in the Open A 14 to 29 age group class via a 1-1 moto tally. He then went on to score the win in the single moto Dash for Cash. In the Open A class, Dain Olson stopped Spindler's chance at a three-peat by sharing first place moto finishes with CJ Wise. Gavin Love topped two classes
Open A was topped by D23’s #20 Rich Suter (1-2). #99 Ryan Santikko finished second (3-1).
also by taking the overall in the Open B and the Open B 14-29 age class, in convincing fashion. In only his first time competing on a motorcycle, the multi-talented Brody Srsen won the overall in the Micro Open Age 4-8 class. The young speedster then went on to score the win aboard his customary quad racer in the Micro Studded

class, and shared victories with his mother Sarah Srsen who took both moto wins in the competitive C 250-450 class. Brock Zychowski also scored a double in the quad ranks by winning the super fast A 250-450 class and the Dash for Cash. Ben Suter spoiled Zychowski’s chance at a three peat by winning the Open A class.
The final round of the Championship series is set to be held at Barkers Island in Superior Wisconsin. Then that evening attention turns to the series banquet. It was a shortened season due to mother nature, but plans are already in the works for 2017, hopefully including two rounds in Minnesota again. nother year is in the books for all the Off-Road participants. The number of participants this year has increased slightly which is good and we always have room for more, so come on out and give it a try. The River Valley Enduro Riders hosted the 2015 District 23 Off-Road Awards Banquet at the Little Falls Ballroom, and did a great job organizing good food, big prizes and some awesome District 23 awards. Award winners received custom canvas prints with individual pictures. “A class champions received embroidered jackets while new for 2015, the B/C class champions received embroidered sweatshirt as a recognition for their accomplishments. For an impressive sixth time the Range Riders Motorcycle Club won the Hare Scramble of the Year Award, voted on by the riders. Not only does the RVER put on a great banquet, they seem to know their way around the woods by winning the Enduro of the Year Award. Congratulations to those two clubs.
Some big news coming from a couple of Minnesota District 23 Off Road riders. We had Matt Stavish winning the AMA Vet/ Senior Racer of the Year Award, Matt was the 45-plus A champion from the 2015 Kenda AMA National Enduro Championship Series.
Nathan Ferderer participated in the 2015 ISDE in Slovakia and earned himself a gold medal, and an experience of a lifetime. Congratulations to you both on your accomplishments and for proudly representing Minnesota.

2016 comes with some exciting news as a band of D23 clubs have joined to put together a mini series for the riders. Al-
though it’s in its initial stages there will be six races. Riders can miss one event, but will then have to attend one of two
trail rides put on at Thielman. There will be a payout to all A classes with five or more riders at most of the events and we will have over $8,000 in prizes at the end of the year for all who qualify. No points or class winners, just a random drawing for prizes. Stay tuned for more details. It should be fun. The big winners for the night were Dylan Debel and Tyler Pogreba. Dylan in dominating fashion won the Overall Championship in the Hare Scramble Series and Tyler Pogreba won his first ever Overall Championship in the Enduro Series. Congratulation to all participating racers on their accomplishments, continue to enjoy the privileges we have and Thank You to all the Clubs for all the hard work in putting on these events. See ya at the races. AA Class winners

District 17’s 2015 Championship
Awards Banquet Ottawa, Illinois - January 30 Pitstick Pavilion
T
his afternoon was much like any other AMA District 17 Championship Awards banquet. Just as special as always, be it your first time here, or something you’ve done for many years. We had a good turn out with close to five hundred again, and it really helped that this year the weather didn’t keep people home. Temps in the 40's and dry roads in January are a great plus for this event. Funny how even inside events are impacted by mother nature. The Directors put together another great night, with a bunch of very cool awards that followed a fantastic dinner. This year’s festivities were made more special as we were able to honor one of the most dedicated members of our family. Greg Moss who passed away a couple years ago was honored with the Hall of
Ryan Moss and family after receiving the Hall of Fame Award for Greg Moss

Over 500 friends and family members enjoyed the Annual Banquet
Fame recognition. It hasn’t been awarded in over twenty years, but anyone who knew Greg totally understands how this came to be. Greg was a long time AMA and Dist.17 member, and long time enduro rider. His enthusiasm of the sport and motorcycles was obvious to all that met him, and with the passing of his love of the
sport to his son Ryan. Greg had been a member of the Forest City Riders and Kishwaukee Riders. Greg’s son Ryan Moss, along with Ryan’s wife, mother and his son, Greg’s grandson, received the award do to the untimely passing of Greg who will be missed by all of the motorcycling community. The family is very proud of what Greg accomplished and thanked everyone for not forgetting him. Greg Moss is in all our thoughts. This Hall of Fame award was just a small way to show our appreciation. D17 Trails Director, Eric Miller, “The 2015 season was a great success. The trials community seems to keep growing in District 17, as we now see an average of around thirty riders per event. We had nine events, with two new venues, one being near Sidell, IL at our 2015/ outgoing Director, Mike Cross' family farm, the other being near Oregon at what we now call “Jeff's place”. Jeff Franklin and his family even stepped up to host a second event there when one of the other clubs had to cancel. This is the type of camaraderie and participation that I like to see in the name of our sport. I can remember the first trials I went to in our district as a spectator, and there were six riders total. Also, “dual” events like the one put on at Fox Valley Off-road are having a positive ef-
fect on our turn outs due to the fact that riders from other disciplines can see what we do. While I’m on the subject of participation, it is worth mention that our Women’s class this year saw Kimi Gardner and Anna Rushbrook at all nine events, battling for points. Kudos to you,
There was far from a shortage of proud family members looking to catch a photo.

ladies! I'm looking forward to the 2016 season as my first full year as Trials Director. We will have 11 events, 8 of which are included in Saturday/ Sunday event weekends. We try to keep all of our events as spectator friendly as possible, so if anyone
is thinking about giving trials a try, or just wanting to see some amazing talent, come see one of our events.” “The 2015 Hare Scramble season went really well with many riders ridding more than the best of fifteen rounds that count. When you talk to them, they all said they were having fun and wanted to ride them all.” District 17 Hare Scrambles Jay Hall continued, “Also we had some intense battles in many classes from the start of the season to the last race of the year. From the top AA class to the plus classes, we had some of the best lead changing that I can think of in years. Your AA winner Drake Lineback won by just three points, and also the winner in +40A Randy Southard won by just one point. It doesn’t get much tighter then that! The banquet was well attended again by the H-S bunch, and all had plenty to eat and were glad to get there awards. Also, as always there was plenty of talking trash to their buddies over a cold drink before the 2016 season starts. Tammy and Jarred and myself hope to see everyone at the track this year and hope you all have fun because after all, when the smoke clears we race motorcycles to have fun and build friendships, because we are all a family at the races.” Long time D17 Enduro Ryan Moss was also really upbeat about the 2015 season, and what was coming in 2016. Moss, “The 2015 Enduro season saw eleven events on the schedule, with two of those being ones that came back after many years away. The series got to travel to many different places, and all those had varied terrains to challenge even the best riders. Even with those challenges the series saw some great events and great battles. Thanks to all the clubs for putting the events on, and to the riders for making it a great season. Our Grand Champion this year was Chase Robinson, taking his first Overall Championship. Chase came out swinging at the opening two rounds to take the overall and a nice points lead. Throughout the season Chase was able to take seven overall wins, showing why he would be the series Champion. We had a few good class battles throughout the season along with a couple standout CYCLE USA, April 2016

The Open A class saw new to enduros Darren Carlson win all but one event that he entered. Darren’s rides put in the top ten overall many times and he finished out the year seventh overall, welcome to the AA class Darren. Nick Graf and Michael Manuel battled for the Overall B title. Matt put in some top three overall rides to take the points lead and title. Matt also finished third overall for the season. DJ not only helps put on one of the longest running enduros in District 17, but is also the father of Blake Ryan and master pit man for many riders. While DJ does still ride enduros, he has changed focus to make sure his son along with fellow Hill and Gully members have a pit crew, and you can find DJ at many spots along the course helping out. tions to DJ, a very deserving rider for this award.” Moss, on 2016, “The 2016 will see twelve events with two clubs putting on two-day events. We will also have a national enduro on the schedule this year. Many of the events are going to an all offroad setup, or have permission to run with no lights required. And all events on the District 17 schedule are “restart” events, so no timekeeping is needed. If you’ve

ever wanted to try an enduro this would be a good year to do it. Thanks to all the riders and families that came to the banquet! It was a pleasure to hand out the awards and see everyone doing some bench racing during this cold winter. Hope to see everyone an Enduro in 2016.” D17 Motocross/ Stadium Director Gerhard Ward was quick to point out some of the highlights os the moto season, as well
as the growing trend in riders crossing over to other venues. Ward, “Racing in District 17 was solid again this season, there were strong class races which went down to the wire and the normal runaways as well. There has been more and more cross type racing going on with riders trying new things. We had riders who did well in Dirt Track and Motocross, Hillclimb and Motocross, even the new Gran Prix type of racing had Champions in both types of racing for the first time. Our participation numbers weren’t huge, but have been steady over the last few years. Seventeen weekends of rain starting off the 2015 season made racing even more concentrated after July then it has been in a long time. Mike Westbrook was the three class winner in motocross this year, winning +40, 45, and 50. He raced all summer and on race day one could look up and see what class was running by whether Mike was on the track or not!! Roger Lyall and Zach Smith went down to the wire in the 4-Wheel 90cc class, ending the season with a two point separation. Ty Tyrrell won the 250A and Open A classes. It seems no one has put together a good enough charge to give Ty a run yet! Two years in a row isn’t a record but it a solid accomplishment! Mikah Carpenter crossed the MX/SX lines and won championships in both 50Jr classes this year. In SX Preston and Talan

Joe rode hard and well this year staying healthy for an entire season. Ashley Newmarker won the Women’s class in Motocross. She has been seen racing quite a few stadium races as well, ending up second to Allison Roland who won the Women’s Stadium class. Krysten Merchantz won Gran Prix’s Womens class this year, and she is actually better known for her motocross background! Looking down the line at a motocross or stadium motocross one may see a big tank, or bark busters. Riders are seeing the increase of participation with different types or racing improve their ability to go better in the part of racing they like the most. We all know this, racing is the best practice it has been proven over the years by the likes of Junior Jackson, Tommy Hofmaster and we are all witnessing today how racing every weekend is rewarding our current hot rod Geico/ Amsoil factory rider Chase Sexton.” If you haven’t come to an Awards Banquet, you are missing out. you don’t need to be receiving an award. This is a huge social event... the best kind, filled with other that love this sport. There’s more bench racing here in a couple hours than anywhere else. Either come just because it is a good time, or get really involved in this new season, and chase the points and a possible Championship of your own. Regardless, be here in January 2017.

ichards Farm in Casey, IL hosted the Lincoln Trail Motosports 2015 Awards Banquet. As the riders arrived for the night they walked by tables full of awards for both the LTM Track Championship and the Fly Racing presented by Scott Showdown series. It seemed like a thousand motos were run on the three tracks - The Classic and Bomber at LTM and Staunton MX, a new track in 2015. All of these tracks were awesome and provided great racing. I can’t say enough about the staff of both tracks putting in hours of hard work. With everyone seated there were more laps bench racing than really ran for the year. It is always fun to talk with fellow riders and share racing stories, both good and bad. When the LTM staff took to the podium to start the night they began by thanking the riders for coming out to the track for races. They thanked the Action Sports medical staff for doing a great job taking care of the riders and all the staff,

flaggers, gate people and score keepers. Along with Fly Racing and Scott Sports Goggles (who provided sponsorship cards for the track championship winners) they thanked Dunlop tires for gifts and for having an incredible Ride Day this year, complete with the Dunlop staff and semis full of products and guest stars Will Haun and Broc Glover. Also thanked was Thompsons Motorsports, World of Powersports, Owen Motorsports, C&D Motorsports, CW Motorsports,

Webers, Sportland Cycles, Neihaus Cycles, Action Motorsports and R&R Cycles, the dealers who provided prizes for the nights event, giving the riders some great swag to take home. Tim and Drew Jackson added, “We had a good year this year but are set up to have a really good 2016.” So come out and have some fun. With all the deserving thanks handed out, everyone stuffed with food, and the future plans discussed, it was time for the business of the night - to reward the riders for their hard work. The riders hauling out the big hardware were the overall points winners for the series: Brayden Cox, Clayton Anderson, and Troy Noland all needed help hauling out their awards for the night. With all the awards handed out for both the track championship and the Showdown series, announcer Tony again thanked everyone for coming and told them to drive safe because there was a threat of bad weather. Everyone headed for the door… not worried about the weather but trying to get home before the first round of the Supercross came on. Once a racer always a racer! CYCLE USA, April 2016
