District Riders: Renew your memberships as soon as you get the opportunity to do so. Your Cycle USA magazine is one of your special membership benefits, and only renewed 2010 members will continue to get issues from this date on. Midwest VMX adds a Hare Scrambles Series for 2010. With the season kicking of May 2nd at the Norseman MC Monticello HS, there will be six points paying rounds. Motorcycles produced with drum brakes front and rear are eligible. Basically 1985 and earlier. Race will run for 1 hour. Some of them will run by themselves; others will be run with others such as the C class. We will have three classes - expert, intermediate, and novice. You must participate in four races for series points. For more information see our schedule in any issue of Cycle USA, or go to www.midwestvmx.com D23 Hare Scrambles series to debut Transponder scoring for the 2010 season. The Norsemen Motorcycle Club has purchased MotoTally transponder scoring to be utilized by the D23 points keepers at ALL D23 Hare Scrambles in 2010. To facilitate the sign-up process we ask all riders to get their AMA membership renewed NOW so you have your AMA card by May 2nd. This will allow us to swipe your AMA card reducing data entry. Sign up at Monticello might take a bit longer due to the issuing of transponders. Transponders will be available to purchase for $15 or rental of $5 with a $15 deposit. The transponder we will be using is credit card sized to be duct tapped underneath your helmet visor or placed inside the liner. Go to www.norsemenmc.org for more info. Changes come to the RacerX Senior Championship for 2010. First, John and Greta Martin have decided to opt out for 2010. According to Mikey Quinn, "This biggest problem we have right now is that June is booked for us. We were able to get an ATV Pro added to our schedule, and that will be run the second weekend in June. The first weekend (when we have been running the Vet race), we have the Youth Regional." On The Cover: Braden Allen of Coatesville, IN at Wildcat Creek MX on March 20th in 51cc (4-6)Stk MultiSpeed.
Announcements, personal stuff, and.... In place of Spring Creek, the opening round for 2010 will be at Sunset Ridge in Walnut, Illinois July 23-24. Sunset Ridge is a senior friendly track run by a friendly senior Bob Pistole (re: Jan) and should be a great event. Red Bud will hold VetFest August 20-21. On August 22 RedBud will host a charity practice day with proceeds going to motorcycle related charities like Rider Down so plan to stick around Sunday. Aztalan will host Round 3 of the 2010 RacerX Championship "Dirty Old Blasters 18" on September 10 -11. Finally, on October 1-2, Motosports Park will host the Vet Open and again, like last year, the overall awards will be given away at the final round. New for 2010 will be a different designation for the "B" classes. All "B" classes will be designated "B/C" so riders competing in "C" classes in their home districts don't have to worry about jeopardizing their "C" status. Also new will be the addition of +18A and +18 B/C classes. Also the age limit for the Womens class will be lowered to +18. Cycle USA Contributors Wanted! Are you looking to get more involved in the sport? Maybe help cut the cost of racing this year? Covering events may be the way to do it. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman The 2010 season has arrived. After a winter that seemed never ending the snow is now gone and the frost is almost out of the ground. I can’t wait to get outside and start riding in the dirt again. The road bike has already been out this year and it really felt great to get a few miles of riding in. Once again we have a full calendar of events for all of our disciplines. There were a few rules changes made at last years annual meeting, those changes can be found on our web site in the new 2010 easier to read rule book. District business is progressing. Our government relations people Tom and Karen are on top of all the current issues at the state level and we are still waiting on a response from Amy Klobuchar on the lead ban issue. One of the things that we have working on and are aware of is the demographic make up of our membership. Due to the economic situation we need to appeal to a wider demographic market. To this end the board voted to appoint two new interim positions as a trial for the future. These positions will be in the areas of New Member Recruitment and New Sponsorship Recruitment. Since none of the current board members are marketing types we are looking to fill these positions. If you have an interest in either of them or know of any college students that need a project or work program let us know. These
positions are critical to our future as an organization and hence the sport we all love. Another major project on tap for this year will be the concussion study that is being done by Mayo Clinic. Since Mayo is ideally located with 4 tracks very close by they will be asking our members to sign up for this study. This is a great opportunity for us as racers to participate is a positive manner to an issue that is at the forefront of all sports. The plan at this time will be to have two age brackets 4 to 17 years old will be pediatrics, and 18 to 55 years old adult level. Currently they are hoping to start signing up participants at the May 1 and 2 Spring Creek practice and race. The study will consist of filling out a multi page survey about your riding habits, practice time, protective equipment worn and the like. Shock Doctor has volunteered to provide a mouth guard to all those racers that sign up for the study if they would like one. There is evidence to support the use of mouth guards in contact sports to reduce the occurrence of concussions. Any racer that signs up for the study will have access to Mayo Clinic for an evaluation should they crash and suspect they have had a concussion. The overall goal of this study is to develop a program that we can use as racers and parents to know when a racer that has sustained a concussion is ready to return to action. As added benefits the current helmet standards will be looked at as there may be a need
for different standards for kids helmets. The use of the Eject helmet removal system will also be studied to determine the effectiveness of this device. The preliminary data shows that it is extremely effective by totally reducing the forces and stresses on the neck during helmet removal in the injured racer. The study is open to all racers and is a landmark opportunity for us to become involved in the evolution of our sport and the safety factors surrounding it. If you have any questions concerning the study please feel free to call me (Mike Quinn). We will keep you informed of all of the legislative issues as they arise. We are not out of the woods fully on the lead ban issue so we will continue to work on that. We need all of you out there to encourage new members, and bring new people into the sport. This is the most family oriented activity I have ever found and we need to get more of those family oriented people exposed to the positives aspects of our sport. Each one of us needs to find a minimum of one new racer this season. A lofty goal to be sure but one that would benefit all of us greatly. As always we are open to new ideas and always looking for new sponsors so if you can help in any way please contact us. In the meantime get the bike ready as the season has finally arrived. See you all on the tracks and trails of Minnesota. Mike

Reads Racing Kicks-off 2010
Rochester, Indiana - March 14 By Bobby Elkins
R
eads Racing Unlimited kicked off their first race of the 2K10 season at D&D Motorsports in Rochester, IN. D&D has, for years, been host to the season opener. Fulton County MX, also in Rochester had been slated as the season opener this year, but weather never allowed that to happen. I suppose even one week off was enough to allow, the cold weather die hard riders more opportunity to become anxious about starting the season. Reads Racing is running two individual series in 2010. The AMA District 15 Premier Series which awards District 15 points, and the Northern Indiana All Star Championship Summer Series of which this was, that pay Reads Racing points.
The Quads opened the show and had just a small amount of luck making grooves in the saturated sand. Every lap would retire the lines that seemed to fold up every time a rider missed the berm. Everywhere accept the top of the freeway and the corner afterward that would shoot them over the finish line. That area was solid and stayed static all day. Sole Quad A rider Adam Barth of Alexandria, IN showed the Quad B riders the fast way to get around. Eric Hoffman of Columbia City seemed more interested in staying clean than making on a run at Barth. Jeff Florian from West Lafayette, was managing to keep a cool head and hold off Hoffman in moto one. Hoffman seemed to be having some trouble early negotiating some of the corners. By race end, even with extra laps, Hoffman could do nothing to catch Flo-
rian. Moto two was all Hoffman though. He had the track down pretty well in his second outing and put some real estate between himself and Florian. Only one rider on two wheels made the track look easy. Dakota Robins of Denver, IN riding, out of Spyke's KTM was in great form. The track held up to the attack assembled by Robins, but was giving other riders fits. It was just wet enough to hold together in some places and had no chance of packing in others. Robins rode the Super Mini, 125cc 2 Str, and the Youth classes, scoring convincing victorys. Kyle Brewster was the only other Super Mini rider to gate with Robins in race two. Brewster learned just how fast you need to go to win in sand when it's raining. In Women 65-85 Madison Johnson of Anderson, IN kept a steady throttle to keep power to the ground and put her in control of the bike rather than lettin' the track swallow her up. I was impressed with her ability to stay focused and ride her own race. She got into a battle with Vintage rider John Heger of Carmen, IN in moto two though. Heger who was doing everything to catch her, slipped around her on lap two. Once he was around,
Dakota Robins started the season really right, winning every class he entered. CYCLE USA, April 2010

as most riders do, especially in tough conditions, he expected her to fold. She let the race come to her. She didn't rush, and eventually found herself pressing hard and coming back around Heger and then riding away from him. Impressive ride by the young lady. Robins lined up again in race four and finished his second act this time in the 125cc 2 Stroke. Scott Swinford of Daleville, IN splatted and took soil samples in, around, about, nearby and close to everywhere and multiple times as did Dalton Packard. By the third go down it was apparent they were both upset and lettin' it get to them. Neither could see it, feel it or find it. He just kept missing the key ingredient and that was to have fun. In conditions such as these you have to keep it light and not be hard on yourself. There isn't a pro rider on the circuit who doesn't have trouble in sand or wet sand. You just have to eliminate the amount of trouble by keeping a cool head and riding smart. In race seven, they all either went down, fell over or stalled at least once from no failure of trying. Michael Wesselman of Bargersville, IN went 2-1 for a win in 250B. Wesselman went up against Anthony Mann, who was caught struggling just a bit more often. Wesselman was able to assemble more

mistake-free corners. Open B rider Doug Read was also gated in race seven and was awarded the holeshot in both motos. He grabbed a safe lead, then chopped the throttle at half track. He would start fast then slow down and move to the right and hand the lead to 250C rider Jake Truay of Crawfordsville. Truay was never threatened after he took the lead in moto one, but gave it away in moto two. Gave it away! He had stretched out a huge lead and then just kept finding new ways to blunder. I know he was tired. He had yanked his goggles and I could read his face. It was telling me he was spent. Instead of just riding smart to the overall win, he literally was riding it like he stole it. Really! Sometimes smart wins over speed! Truay still crossed the stripe first to win the 250C, even after going down multiple times. Nearly all the riders went down or had some type of trouble at least once to start the season, even Robins! This race was attended by riders who just can't wait to start racing. They just gotta race! It's a Reads Racing tradition to start the season early. I can still hear Larry saying, "They are already racing in Oklahoma!" I saw some things I liked and some things I was surprised to see. I think we're in for a great season at Reads Racing.

Indy SX A Great Show Indianapolis, Indiana - February 20 By Larry Witmer Photos by Michael Sierens
I
n front of a packed crowd of over 60,000, Supercross made its East Coast Lites debut at the beautiful Lucas Oil Stadium. Kawasaki mounted Christophe Pourcel grabbed the lead early in the main and left the field in the wake. It wasn’t so clear cut of a win in the premier class with Ryan Villopoto coming from third to work by Honda riders Kevin Windham and Davey Millsaps. Villopoto made it a Kawasaki sweep tonight. The top ten riders in points came out one at a time in selected areas of the dome with lasers and bombs erupting to showcase their arrival. Davi Millsaps worked his #18 Honda to the partisan Indy Colts crowd, donning the #18 jersey of Payton Manning over his race gear. The crowd loved it. The elder statesman of the series, Kevin Windham did his talented front wheel stoppie through the full length of the start stretch area. Impressive! Some other highlights saw Indiana favorite Mike LaRocco come center stage and to be interviewed. He spoke about his last career win which came in 2004 at the old Indy venue, the RCA Dome. The half time show brought out the freestyle team of Kenny Bartram, Ken Clark,
The start of the Lites main event.
and Mike Metzger. These guys put on ten minutes of a full on freestyle show. Back flips, full whips, lazy chairs, cordova’s and many more tricks. These guys are good, and possibly a little crazy, OK, really crazy, but good. It didn’t take long to get fireworks started on the track, as in the second practice of the Supercross class as Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey got into a tussle with his old rival Jason Lawrence. They block passed each other and did the old trick of stopping in the middle of the turn and making the other rider take evasive moves. The AMA didn’t tolerate these actions and the black flag came out immediately to these riders. The AMA pulled them aside and had a talk with them. Both riders were penalized with last gate selection in their heat races. Lawrence is already walking a fine line and his attitude needs to be harnessed to avoid these confrontations or he will again lose his racing license. Heat one holeshot went to Millsaps, but the Team Honda rider lost the front end going into the first corner taking Villopoto out with him. Millsaps remounted to chase the field down and qualify in eighth. Josh Hill took over the lead in the carnage from the first corner. Matt Boni was second and Nick Wey third. Hill kept the Yamaha on the point to the checkers. Byrne, Lawrence, Billy Payne, Millsaps, and Trey Canard would transfer.
Spencer Dally of Taylors Falls, MN. finished tenth, having to take his fight to the LCQ, where he finished eighth, and out of the program. Hill was upbeat on his first win of the year. “I felt really good and strong out there. It’s good to get my first win and keep my Yamaha out front.” Justin Brayton took the shot in Heat two, but Kevin Windham pushed into the lead on the first lap through the first triple jump section just after the start. Dungey also passed Brayton in the back section. Ivan Tedesco was fourth, and Kyle Chisholm rounded out the top five at the end of the opening lap. Windham took the win in smooth fashion. “Passing is going to be tough tonight. I need a good start and get on the podium.” In the last chance event Villopoto didn’t get the best start, but one by one got by the other riders eventually taking the lead and win. Jason Thomas carded the last transfer spot. Regional racers Brad Ripple and James Povolny missed out getting a qualifying position. The main event saw Millsaps rip the shot with Windham close in second. Starting from the far outside was Villopoto and he pulled off a great start going around the first corner wide and carding third. Dungey rounded out the top four. The first laps saw Millsaps and Wind-
ham exchange the lead at least three times each lap. The crowd was going wild. Windham got by Millsaps on the third lap. That same lap saw Villopoto get by Millsaps on the far triple with an inside line. Dungey also displaced Millsaps to fourth on the fourth lap going down the start line shute. The front runners were starting to get into some back markers by the fifth lap, and the pressure was intense on Windham by Villopoto and Dungey. Trey Canard on the replacement factory Honda ride went down hard on the far triple section ending his night. Tenth lap, Villopoto got the Kawasaki past Windham and it seemed like Windham possibly ran out of steam as Dungey did the same exact pass on lap eleven without a fight from Windham. Millsaps just went down in a sand corner running by himself. The Honda didn’t stall, but Brayton snuck by on the inside taking over the fourth spot. Chris Blose was the top, privateer in sixth. Seventh belonged to Langston with Nick Wey eighth. Lawrence and Hill were about five seconds back running inside the top ten. In the closing stages of the event, Villopoto pulled a three second advantage to the checkers. Dungey crossed in second and Windham seven seconds back. In the winner’s circle Ryan Villopoto was excited about his win and taking over the points top spot. “I was concerned about tonight after the DNF in the heat. I got a great drive off the gate on that outside gate. I kept my concentration in the main early on not pushing it and being patient. I knew I could win it, and Dungey got hung up with lappers
Windham looked very strong and took his heat race win easily.
in the closing stages.” Dungey, “passing out there tonight was tough. The lappers weren’t too kind, like Chisholm blocked me in the closing stages.
Justin Barcia made his rookie debut, finishing third in his first main event.

CYCLE USA, April 2010
Oh, well, that’s racing, but it feels good to get back on the podium this week. Much thanks to Suzuki.” In the Lights division it was all Christophe Pourcel all night. He pulled the fastest lap, the fastest heat lap and race time, and came out blazing in the main displacing Austin Stroup just after the start. Pourcel turned on the smooth speed and never looked back for the win. Stroup was under attack by the rookie #17 Justin Barcia during the second lap. Barcia passed Stroup in the far triple jump section executing a perfect scrub, and getting by the Suzuki rider. Barcia continued his runnerup position until the third lap when the front end of the Honda washed under in one of the sand corners. Barcia quickly remounted behind Stroupe and Ryan Sipes. Pourcel was checking out, but the battle for the top three was intense. The final laps the trio was getting into lapped traffic and that would be the factor for the outcome of the event. Stroupe held the second spot, Sipes and Barcia tried splitting Adam Chatfield’s Kawasaki, but Sipes got the raw end of the deal and Barcia got by Sipes in the finish line corner going for the checkers. Sipes said a nice hello (yea, right) to Chatfield after the event just after the finish line. Give props to some fast regional racers like Drew Yenerich, just outside of a heat

transfer and getting 14th in the LCQ. Another Yamaha rider Shane Sewell gave it his all coming in 11th in his qualifier and taking 8th in the LCQ. Josh Lichtle looped his Yamaha off the line in the LCQ and with that never had a chance to advance. Nick Jackson on his Honda from MN. took an 7th spot in the LCQ and showed some good speed through out the evening. Alex Martin didn’t get the results he was looking finishing just outside a LCQ transfer spot in fifth. In winner’s circle Pourcel, “I felt good tonight, and with not riding much since I broke my collarbone. I tried to be smooth early on and set a fast pace. Much thanks to Mitch /Pro Circuit for such a great bike.” Austin Stroupe was also upbeat with his runnerup slot. “I had a good night, settled into a good pace, but that #1 was fast. This is what I’ve been shooting for is to stay consistent, and be there for the championship. 009 wasn't anything like some of the years past, it didn’t see the biggest turnouts, and it wasn't the best as far as weather. The year was still a success, and another one worth remembering, as they all are. This evening’s banquet was fun, and with just under 600 people, it proved there is still a huge interest in our championship racing, and that even better times are ahead. With a little scrambling we located a few extra tables and secured seats for everyone, Electric Blue was on hand with the nights entertainment. AJ introduced the D-17 Board, and newly elected AMA Board of Director James Viverito spent a few minutes and spoke to the crowd with his ideas and plans going forward with the AMA. George Barrington displayed his new toy for setting up the handing out of door prizes. The screen display on the wall was excellent and addressed that age old problem of dispersing thousands of dollars in prizes out in a timely fashion. Most of the Motocross and Stadium Motocross riders on hand were under the age of fourteen. The night was filled with those "little people" coming up to get a sneak peek of those "giant" first place Champion plaques. Some of the "old" guys were there and some that never made it to a banquet like this before. Comments like "wow" you get that many people for this every year? The heart and spirit of the Hare-Scramble rider and their families are strong, and they all love the challenges. This year’s racing was full of mud, being one of the wettest years since ‘93, with a few races canceled and a few that should have been. Even with that, riders kept coming and looking forward to the next weekend.
Jay Hall, “This year’s awards banquet was a huge success, with the largest turn-out of Hare Scrambles families since we have had the banquets. With that being said, the ones that didn’t attend, you missed a very good time. We gave out 116 jackets this year.” The evening started with the Mark Cain Memorial Sportsmen Award being handed out this year’s recipient being Clint Pherigo. This award is given to someone that goes above being just a good rider, but one that show good sportsmanship to their fellow riders. We had so many winners this year, there are two many to list, but Tammy “my wife” and I liked seeing all the kids, they are very special to us. They are our future, and without them our sport will go to the wayside when all of us are in our rockers. With this being our tenth year as Hare-Scramble director we have seen kids grow into adults, and
become a part of the Hare-Scramble family, and ours. How times have changed, some of these kids are taller then me, and using me for traction, how times have changed! Tammy and I hope to see you all at the track this year, and wish you all the best of luck in 2010. Let’s hope for a spring of green grass, and a little dryer conditions. Jay... Stan Camp, D17 Dirt Track Director... In Dirt Track, the season was another success. We would still like to see more of our dirt track riders present at the banquet, but we’ll always be hoping for more and more. Those that showed up had a good time. It’s always fun to see people you haven't seen since fall, and find out plans for the coming season. We have a good schedule for 2010, and everyone I talked to was excited, and waiting for it to all get started again. I look forward to seeing everyone at the opener at Pekin in April.

Motocross Champions
the series turned out to have some great events and some great points battles. Once again our AA and Grand Enduro Champion was Jeff Fredette on his Team Green/ Moose Racing/ FRP KLX450. For many years Jeff has been challenged by up and comers, but year after year he has shown why he is a champion by putting in consistent rides and coming out on top at the end. This year we had a new comer to 200B that set the class on fire. Chris Welch came
into the class and took almost every class win and many Overall B awards. Chris was so successful this year that he won both the 200B class and the Overall B award. In Open B we had a three way battle between Michael Westhoff, Travis Held, and Curt Shomberg. All three riders had consistent rides and pushed each other at each event. Michael came out on top this year, and Travis had good enough results from this year and last that he is now an A class rider.
Thanks to all that came to the banquet! It was good to hand out the awards and see everyone to some bench racing during this cold winter. 2009 was a very wet season, many races cancelled or changed around. Hopefully 2010 will be dry on weekends! Racing started in March and so far, things are looking great, good luck in your racing endeavors this year!

Strangfeld rolls through Humbird Humbird, Wisconsin - January 17
E
merson Lake in Humbird, WI was home to round three of the Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association’s (CWIRA) 2010 event schedule. It was a near perfect day as temps rose to around thirty, very little wind, and the sun actually made it feel even warmer than it was. The ice was also in great shape for both the oval and GP courses. Well over 200 entries made it another successful event. As far as successful days go, John Strangfeld added another to his list. In the Open Pro GP racing that starts off the day, Strangfeld quickly jumped to the front of the pack and then led them each lap to take the win. Brian Frandsen kept in close early to finish second ahead of Marky Will, Luke Fox, and Jason Severt. Strangfeld led all the way in the second moto as well, while Fox got the better jump over Frandsen this time. Fox pushed Strangfeld for the first half of the race, then settled into second as Will worked up to fourth at the finish. Moose Racing’s D16 Enduro Referee (Speedy) Pete Laubmeier got the start he wanted on his KTM in the Open Am GP class. Laubmeier led from the first turn to take the win. Grafton, WI’s Robert Fedrowitz was in second, but had Zach Sherman pushing him hard after coming up from fourth off the start. Sherman eventually found his way around to finish second on his Husqvarna. Fedrowitz held on to third while Corey Schroeder and Bryan Smetana filled out the top five. It was a repeat for Laubmeier as he won the second moto. Fedrowitz had a better start, and ran in second ahead of Schumer and
John Strangfeld fends off Luke Fox in the Open Pro/Am GP class.
Schroeder every lap as well. Fedrowitz (3-2) finished second overall ahead of Sherman (25) and Schroeder (4-4). The final GP race of the day was for the Open Studded Quad riders, and Dustin Hoffman swept both motos for the overall. Colin Wilcott finished second in the first moto after a close three battle with Tad Fehrenbach and Bradley Helser. Wilcott had problems in the second outing, finishing back in seventh. Fehrenbach and Helser went 2-3 for the moto and overall. Fehrenbach led the first lap of the second moto with Hoffman giving him fits in every corner. Crossing the finish line at the end of the first lap, and finishing the Dustin Hoffman is always a contender, fastest part of the today winning the Open GP class. course, Hoffman pushed his way to the inside of Fehrenbach for the pass to take over. From there Hoffman rode hard and opened up a little gap with each lap for the win. Also on the move in the early laps, Helser came from mipack to third where he finished ahead of Mike Mueller. Strangfeld continued his winning ways in the Oval racing when the Open Pro riders hit the ice.
Mark Muth started in second and pushed Strangfeld through the opening two laps. Luke Fox was on fire, and slid under Muth at the beginning of the third lap, then went right after the leader. As the two put a little distance on Muth, Strangfeld never faltered, holding off Fox to the checkers. Mike Schnur rode well for fourth, just ahead of Russell Bradley. The second moto was a close one for second through fourth, behind Strangfeld. Fox held second in the first lap but hit a soft spot going into turn two of the second lap and slid back behind Muth and Bradley. As those two worked each other every lap to the finish, Fox pulled out all the stops to try and move back up. Using every line on the oval, he came close several times, but had to accept a fourth place finish. Consistency was out the window in the Quad Pro studded class. It all started with a series of botched starts and early crashes leaving almost half the riders on the penalty line for the first moto start that “actually worked”. Colin Wilcott took the lead and never gave it up. Behind him Dj Schultz was in second before Sam Spatz dropped him back on the third lap. Ryan Powell was one of the riders stuck in the back row at the start, and really worked hard to get to fourth by the finish, almost side by side with Schultz. After finishing back in eighth in the first moto, Polaris rider Mike Mueller nailed the holeshot in the second moto and simply rode the wheels off his quad for a big win. While it only got him a fifth overall, it was one impressive ride for sure. Powell quickly moved
by Schultz for second, taking full advantage of not having to start on the penalty line this time. He rode there to the end for the overall win via his 4-2 results. Schulz finished second overall with his two third place finishes as first moto winner Wilcott finished sixth in the moto, for fifth overall behind Spatz (2-5). In the exciting Pro/Am Rubber ATV class, Michigan’s Art Kossow put in a near flawless ride for the overall... winning both motos on his way to the overall. In the first moto, with Kossow out front, Brandon Hoffman worked up to second after getting by Cody Norris in the second lap. Kyle Krasselt also moved up, finishing fourth after a late race pass on Derek Spatz. Krasselt finished third behind Hoffman in the second moto for third overall, just edging out Norris. While we are on fast rubber class racing, the Outlaw Pro class delivered excitement as usual. The top four kept it close and unpredictable right to the end. Dustin Hoffman was in contention early, but after bouncing off Dan Lindner twice, ended up at the back of the pack. Lindner somehow held it together to finish third behind Scott Geldernick and Scott Lindner in the first moto as Nick Nett finished fourth. The second moto was a little less intense as Scott Lindner led Dan Lindner from the start to the checkered flag for the top two spots. Behind them, Geldernick and Nett went at it all race, with Nett passing for third

at the half-way point. Geldernick made runs to re-take the spot in the last laps, but couldn’t find a way around. His 2-4 set of motos
was still good for third overall ahead of Nett, so we are sure these two will continue their battle at future events.

Tim Brooks finished fourth after Zach Miller fell back a few spots from a good start. Perfect Opening for Wildcat Rossville, Indiana - March 20
W
ildcat Creek MX scheduled one of the very first events in Indiana, and it was the first Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier for the Mid-East area. A gamble... if the weather was right, you could have a great weekend, if not, well, you get the idea. Leaving from southern WI on Saturday morning to drive down to day one of the two day event, we ran through snow, sleet, and rain. It was looking like one of those days, but as we got closer to the track everything was looking good. All the bad weather had stayed to the north, and we were in for a great day as temps climbed up close to sixty. After a long winter, everyone was ready for a great early event, and the Wildcat Creek crew was more than happy and ready to deliver it. Kicking the day’s racing off in grand fashion were the 450A class riders. Indiana’s Blake Niccum was fast out of the gates, grabbing the holeshot and holding the lead through the first lap. Coming on hard was Maxx Malatia, Kentucky’s Chad Bedard and another quick Indiana rider, Ryan Koontz. By the start of the second lap Niccum was under big pressure, and shortly after Malatia pushed Part of the 250B class off the start. his way to the inside of Niccum for down pat as he put his Yamaha out front in the the lead. Bedard was next to move up, taking second moto. Coming through the first turn, over second just before the end of the same first moto winner Malatia got pushed wide lap. From there, Malatia was in control, and and was forced into mid-pack. Niccum slid led to the finish as he and Bedard opened up back a few spots through the first two laps, as a small gap over eventual third place runner Koontz took the point with Bedard second, Koontz. Canada’s Nick Beatty finished fourth and Malatia working up to third. The next lap ahead of Niccum. saw Malatia move into second behind Koontz Niccum again proved he had his starts
(3-2) where he would finish. 4PR Racing/ DGY/ No Fear backed Malatia, “I didn’t have the best start, but came back to second. I tried to get by him, but just couldn’t get it. I’ll still have the overall, so I’m happy. The track is good. It was groomed between motos so it was a little harder finding lines this time, but it is fun.

This is my first year on the 450, so a lot of this is new.” The 450B class had plenty of fast guys as well. In the first moto, Harvard, IL’s Cody Vanbuskirk grabbed the holeshot and immediately went to work putting time on the rest of the eighteen rider field. Vanbuskirk was smooth, and a step ahead of the class as he went untouched for the win on his Suzuki. Behind him, there was plenty of close racing. Indiana’s Samuel Miller was running in second with a bunch of riders right on his rear fender. IL’s Mitch Koebele and Ohio’s Branden Dillon in the early laps, then Jake Fiddler rolled his way past several riders, and into fourth by the end of the second lap. The order held until the last lap, when the push from behind finally got to Miller. Half a lap left, and Koebele slid by over the large table top jump, then just before the finish, Fiddler slammed to the inside to take third, and drop Miller to fourth. Vanbuskirk had a little harder time with the second moto, “It went pretty good out there, but I had to catch up for it this time. I think I was just holding it on longer in the corners and making time there. On the last lap, he (Koebele) made a few mistakes and I was able to pass him going into the back section.” Tom Zont/ Midwest Action Cycle/ SF Performance backed Koebele, “I was going as hard as I could, he just got to the ground quicker than I did at the end there, and beat me into the corner. The track was good and there’s a couple ruts in each corner so it was a lot of fun. We were at Duquoin last weekend and it was so muddy, it was really good being here and having it be dry.” Behind those two, Fiddler held third most of the race for third overall. The Women’s class didn’t have bunch of riders, but those that were here were looking to Qualify for the national, as many had traveled from other states to do so. Even with that, Indiana’s Meghan Jordan went 1-1 for the overall. Michigan’s Cierra Busby worked up in both motos to finish second ahead of Cady Vancura (3-4) and Missy Dowers (5-3). Stephanie Mansell traveled from Alabama to finish fifth overall (4-5). The 51cc 7-8 Stk class was dominated by Ohio riders, as they filled the top six positions. Jackson Thomas won both motos ahead of Griffin Maxwell and Spencer Brehm. One of the bigger classes of the day was filled with twenty-seven 250B riders. While there was a lot of close, and really good racing all through the pack, one rider kept his gear totally clean in the first moto. Minnesota’s Clarion Chapiewski pulled the lead off the start and stretched further away with each lap. The Honda rider was in a class of his own for sure. Tennessee’s DT Young quickly fought his way into second where he finished just ahead of Mitch Koebele, Cody Vanbuskirk, and Pennsylvania’s Nicholas Pat-
terson. Chapiewski again won the second moto after quickly getting by Dakota Blakeney just after the start. Larson’s Cycle rider Chapiewski, “I tried to get good starts and be consistent. I wanted to ride smooth and stay out front. The track is getting rougher now, and this was my first time here so I’m happy. Patterson, Vanbuskirk, Alex Williams and Koebele rounded out the top five in the moto. Illinois rider Zachary Loehr got the jump on the Schoolboy class’s first moto, and put it to good use staying out of the fight over sec-
ond. Ohio’s Blain Brown and D17 rider Dakota Blakeney went at it all the way to the finish line where Brown held on for second. Willie Patton was close in fourth as well. Blakeney pulled the second moto holeshot, but Loehr simply wasn’t ready to be beat, and passed him early in the opening lap. From there they ran 1-2 to the finish ahead of Brown and Patton. Mattoon, IL’s Carter Gordon found plenty of competition in the fast 85cc 9-11 Stk class... most of it from Ohio riders. Gordon had a great first moto start and led the field, but was really getting heat from behind.
Maxx Malatia won Saturday’s the 450A class. Cody Vanbuskirk was unbeatable in 450B.

Even with indoor events and ice racing, it is still a long winter for those of us that crave the sound of motocross, and the warmth of a good summer day. Reads Racing Awards Banquet
Nappanee, Indiana - February 27 By Bobby Elkins
T
here were over 300 people in attendance at this year’s Reads Racing awards banquet. The banquets date has been pushed back to near the start of the new season for the second year. By scheduling the banquet late, it helps to revert a rider’s thoughts back to the previous season and gets them thinking about this year’s championship again. The banquet was sponsored by Lake City Hon/Kaw, Napa, Hoosier Racing Tires, Loose Moose Motorsports, Orr Motorsports, Max Pitts, Frazier Motorsports, Tech Works, North End Cycle, Day Hardware, Webbs Family Pharmacy, Viking Foods, Rochester Ford New Holland, South Side Video, and RJK Promotions. All together there were over 250 door prizes handed out. Everyone who came to the banquet was entered into the drawing at no charge. The class awards were seperated by the handing out of door prizes and some picture taking. The top raw points winner was Jordan Parmley of Daleville, IN. Jordan wore the vinyl off his seat racing 72 events in 2009. The top award handed out at the banquet next to the class champion plates is the coveted Larry and Joyce Memorial Award, which honors AMA Hall of Fame entree and the founder of Reads Racing, Larry, and the Reads Racing matriarch, Joyce Read. The Johnson Family, Dale, Stacy, Levi and Madison were awarded the trophy without hesitation. "No big trick picking this one," spouted Mikey Klinger of Reads Racing. The Johnson's (Big Daddy Racing) have two spirited riders in their camp. Levi, who returned last year after a nasty spill, and Madison who is a class champion, state champion, and an Arenacross winner. She works she tail off on the track. Meanwhile, Dale is letting another rider borrow her spare ride to go out and try to beat her. Same thing with Levi. Levi is set to win Johnson family.

a race, and dad steps in and lets another rider borrow a ride to beat his own son. That really explains it all. And if that isn't enough, Stacy understands the importance of running a calm and quiet camp, and invites anyone and everyone in for coffee. They come to the track willing to give rather than just take. They have reintroduced sportsmanship to an entire new decade of riders, and are becoming known for it. It's not just the race itself, but rather, it's how you raced! And that seems to be their team’s motto. The Sportmanship award went to Jennifer Reutebach. You can't keep a good girl down! Jennifer put in some pretty exciting rides and showed some real improvement by season’s end. She's always ready to talk racing. I’ve heard her talking with friends at the track and the conversation is always about racing. I don't think I've heard her talk about anything else. The Best Sibling Rivalry award went to Maddison and Brogan Guyer, both MiniQuad racers. There are no exemptions for this award. You can't work at winning it. It's been offered only three times in ten years. But this year's was the best. The rivalry beats anything the Reads Racing group put together in their careers which also included another battle of the sexes. This brother and sister team may need to seperate their camps at the track. They are great pals off the track, but when they see dirt and smell
gas they both get heated, competitive, anxious and sometimes down right angry. Which, of course brings plenty of excitement for the fans of the mini-quad motos. I have to admit it has been hilarious at times watching them go at it. Same class, limited motors, nearly the same size, and both with infectious smiles. Brogan finished third overall this season with Maddison just behind in fourth. Both were forced off the track seperately due to injury's sustained on and off the track and other complications that were unpreventable. Maddison went thru some awfully painful surgery and was wheelchair bound for a spell. She had to have some rehabilitation at no fault of her own. She was on crutches at the banquet, but seems to be gettin' along just fine. Whenever there is a large entry of Mini's in the gate and two of them are Guyer's, there's gonna be a race. Just think it'll only be a handful of years before they both are driving! Hahaha! Good luck with all that! The Hard Luck award went to Lindsey Sande of Zanesville. "What's it gonna take?", "How does that happen?", "You've got to be kiddin' me!", And of course, the ole', "Couldn't have happened any other time, had to be now didn't it!" Lindsey has had to put up with more busted this, broken that and konked out the other, but still seems keeps coming back. I've never seen a rider have more problems on the track. Lindsey does punish equipment but at the same time, it's supposed to take it. Her dream would be to turn pro, race the circuit and use what she has learned to create a career in the industry at some level. Maybe she should conisder creating her own company and make parts that don't break. If she rides it and it don't break, it's been Lindsey'd. Most improved rider awards went to Colton Camp and Hunter Anthony. These rac-
ers finished first and second in the 50 4-8 Oil Injected class. Both riders were as tiny as I've ever seen 'em come into the sport. Hunter also mixes it up in the 50 Open while Colton finds finds the 50 4-6 more his speed for a second class. Hunter is a come from behind type rider who has already learned a trick or two from watchin' the big boys. He's really picked it up quick. Colton has improved seriously in just one short year also. He's quite a character, but is sporting a new personality. He was so quiet his first year of racing, I wondered if he could talk yet. He was just so little. He must have thought everyone at the track were monsters and giants yelling at him to go faster. Cut to one year later and you'll find a kid who can't be slowed down. Colton freaked out when they called his name for most improved rider. You would have thought he just won a trip to Hawaii aboard Santa's sleigh with a stop over in Candyland. He ran around the front of the room like he'd just won the lottery. I got such a kick out of his enthusiasm. I’m expecting big things this season from some of the older kids like Michael Wesselman. It's time Michael, you are due! I am also expecting big things from another younger lad, Seth Anderson of Peru. You two managed to slip quietly in under the radar. All your efforts to stay unrecognized have been useless. It's time for both of you to take it to the next level. I'm not to busy on most race-
days to recognize your abilities and I intend on speaking about them clearly. "Gimme somethin' to talk about fellas." Motokazie Indoors - Part Two Fergus Falls, Minnesota - February 20 By Matt Wellumson
M
oving deeper into 2010, many riders are just now starting to dust off their machines, to get ready for the tracks to open up this spring. A great time of year indeed, but for those in the 'know', that dust isn't from sitting, it's actually from racing indoors. During the weekend of February 20th, Motokazie had again set up camp at Red Horse Ranch in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. This time they were gathering riders for the final rounds of their 2010 indoor motocross series. The Motokazie indoor series is not actually a district race, however, it does follow the same two-moto format. For those of us watching, it makes for two highly intense races, full of action from start to finish! Not the first race of the night, but one of the best due to the cool factor, was the 50cc Oil Injected class. This class is entertaining to watch, mostly because a majority of the riders being younger than 6, and due to it being the smallest class (size of the riders), it makes for some interesting riding. For them, small ruts for big bikes, become deep canyons, small
jumps become mountains, and everything else that goes with these things has a much larger feel. It's the sheer change in scale that makes this group have to work much harder, and really gives them a chance to develop their skills in ways that no adult starting off in motocross will ever have. This group is always filled with some great future riders, in this case, two of which being brothers. Austin (#153) and Timmy (#154) Kristiansen are both riding buddies, and brothers who call LeCenter, Minnesota home. Their night wasn’t without challengers, as Chase Hanson of North Dakota was charging hard on his KTM, gunning for that first place podium finish. Hanson had his work cut out for him, and even ran into a bit of a snag during the first moto when he engaged too much throttle, and ended up launching off one of the last whoops of the section. This gave Timmy Kristiansen an opportunity to pass, and finish a second behind Austin. Moto two was a totally different animal however. Hanson was back, and with a vengeance! With a much better holeshot, and a bit more throttle control, he was able to hold on to second after momentarily leading Austin
Kristiansen for part of the first lap. Austin was able to work by him on his Honda CRF50, and hold onto his lead throughout the rest of the race. Timmy finished third, with Jaylona Hull of South Dakota holding a strong fourth place finish. I’m really looking forward to watching some of these riders race the upcoming season, as these kids can only

get faster, and more in control of their machines! For many riders, the C class provides an opportunity for youngsters to move into big bikes for the first time, or for adults, a chance to start off in racing all together. The class is always changing, and offering a glimpse of
what we may eventually see in faster classes. During this event, two riders who will soon transition into the faster group of B-riders held their final races as C riders. At the drop of the gate during Lites-C, it was obvious that Mike Will was intent on going out with a bang! Will had an a w e s o m e holeshot from which he essentially remained unchallenged Belview, MN’s during the first Alex Anderson in 250C. lap of the race. What Will didn't know, was that Conner Cunningham, who started near sixth, was making quick work of the field, and soon battling second place Alex Anderson (Belview, MN). Cunningham was able to square off the S-Turn section of the track to get around Anderson, and started to charge hard into the back sandy section, and start reeling in Will. It only took one lap be-

fore it was Will and Cunningham sharing the same section of the track, causing Will to think hard about ways to hold his lead. Cunningham put just the right level of pressure on Will to open up an opportunity for a block pass. Eventually Cunningham was able to slowly pull away, giving him a comfortable lead. Truly an awesome race to watch and photograph! This day was a last hurrah for Cunningham as a C rider, as on day two at Fergus Falls, he made the transition to B. Will plans to make the transition during the spring season. As always, the event at Fergus Falls was an amazing sight. Every hotel in town was full of trucks and trailers full of MX things, and every restaurant was full of MX racers, families, and spectators! It truly is the closest thing I have experienced to shooting Professional Supercross in a major city. You truly do get immersed in motocross from the hotel pool (full of mx bike noises from kids), to the track full of all types and size of bikes! While I love shooting Pro events at national stadiums from time to time, I wouldn't trade that for the experiences an event like this has to offer. A total takeover of a town by people involved with motocross is a beautiful thing to behold. The week before they performed a flag to flag victory in the Mid-Cities two hour race. At the start of the race, the Couldn’t Think Of One team put their machine out front overall ahead of the field of 48 teams. HMC Racing was in fourth at the start, third on lap two and claimed the lead shortly after. This was the fourteenth edition of the Steel Shoe Fund three hour ice race. The Fund is established to aid injured dirt track racers who have been hurt in competition. The event was originally planned to run January 21st, but warm weather and rain caused a postponement to this day which, brought better weather. The normal turn out for this event is over seventy teams, but other events on the calendar and riders preparing for the national events in Daytona Beach unfortunately contributed to a lower number of entries.

n 80% chance of rain showers in the weather forecast for Plymouth, Indiana did not impact the turnout for the first Hare Scramble race of the 2010 District 15 season. 179 bikes and quads showed up hoping for a chance to start the season with a class victory. The partially sunny skies and dry conditions once again proved that we should not plan racing events based on the forecasts. Each year brings a significant change in the class talent through riders moving up in youth events, or advanced from the previous year’s performance. This year proved to be no different. Last year’s Mini 65cc undefeated champion, Mike Witkowski, moved up to the premier 85cc class a year early with grand plans to continue his winning streak.

Light B riders Jesse Parr, and Alex Witkowski (#101).
Witkowski’s goal would be challenging considering the return of last year’s runner up, Keagen Lee, coming back after a winter long training program including participating in the ice racing series. Witkowski was hard on the gas from the second the green flag waived, landing the coveted holeshot. Lee followed close behind during the first lap, but Witkowski’s efforts proved too much for the rest of the 85cc and Supermini field. He put on a show which was consistent with his dominating efforts from last year’s run. Lee hung in for a solid second place finish with Tanner Bartlett landing the third place spot. Zachary Dubois jumped up to the Supermini class and held on for that class victory. The 65cc class race was now up for grabs. Vincent Smith landed the holeshot with Dawson Dunnuck following close behind. The smooth riding style of Smith proved too much for the remaining field. Smith landed the victory with a five minute lead over Dunnuck as Blake Ryan finished third. 115 big bikes lined the five
starting rows in hopes of claiming a holeshot and subsequent victory. Tyler Tischler, last year’s opening round winner claimed the front row holeshot, entering the woods in the lead. Less than half way through the first lap, Tischler suffered a mechanical failure ending his hopes of repeating. Tischler’s breakdown opened the door for riders such as Matt Zeiler, Jordan Johns, Daniel Sims and Jake Fiddler. Zeiler rode a smooth race landing the overall victory followed by Johns and Fiddler. As we saw in the Mini classes, several big bike classes were loaded with new talent through forced and self advancement to higher classes. Anthony Wagler moved up from the light B to light A class. The move not only resulted in an improved overall finish, it landed Wagler his first A class victory over last year’s competition, Andrew Hardin. The light B ranks were loaded with last year’s 85cc riders Alex Witkowski, Jesse Parr and the returning Matthew Sims. Sims had an impressive start leading the pack into the woods, but Witkowski was too much to handle landing a five minute victory over Sims with Parr coming in a solid third. Another one of last year’s 85cc talented riders, Taylor Day, moved up to the Heavy B ranks landing his first every big bike victory. The PeeWee track was moved to a new section of the property in anticipation of the forecasted weather. The track consisted of

entleman start your engines” is what I overheard one racer say while leaving the riders meeting. The outdoor Motocross season for AMA District 17 kicked off with over 200 entries at Lincoln Trail Motosports in Casey, IL. Overcast and cool, the day did see some light rain, but nothing you couldn’t race in. The radar showed heavy rain all around the region and the track owner Tim said, “one thing I want people to know is that when I post or say the weather and track are good they are!” Much to my surprise he was correct, the track was in great shape with very little mud. Even when it started to rain at the end of the first motos the track still stayed in good shape. Good job to the LTM staff. Overall, the atmosphere of the event and riders was “Man it’s good to be back at the track racing, this winter was way too long.” “It's great be back at it again and we look forward to another exciting season with the return of the Illini series with factory contingency as well as hare scramble and vintage events. We should have something for every rider to enjoy,” stated Tim. 42

The first gate to drop for the 2010 season was for the 250B class. Right off the bat it was a battle between Kawasaki rider Quentin Jones and Yamaha rider Derrick Boyd. Both riders were on their “A” game already, and you could have thrown a blanket over them at the end of the first moto as Boyd took the win with Jones second and Yamaha rider Joseph Aumiller third. In the second moto the war was again on between Boyd and Jones. This moto Jones rocketed his Kawasaki to the lead taking the moto and overall win. Boyd finished second. Kawasaki rider Ben Elson finished third, and overall. In motocross you are taught to never give up, don’t follow and never let up until you cross the finish line. I’ve never seen a more perfect example of this than in the 85Sr class from Honda rider Keeze Carver. Carver was on the hunt, not for some wild animal, but for Yamaha rider Matthew Bell. Carver did all the things he was supposed to, but so did Bell who laid down perfect laps with Carver in his shadow. On the last lap Bell was still out front with Carver hot on his heels. Coming into the last turn there were some lapped riders taking the white flag and the two leaders split them with Bell going low and Carver railing the outside wide open and out of control, but making the pass at the finish line by half a wheel for the moto win, only to slide out and take down Bell with him! What a race, and both riders were ok. The best seat in the house for the battle was third place finisher Sam Shamie. In the second moto Carver didn’t have to be so dramatic in his moto and overall. Bell took second in the moto and overall. Third went to Suzuki rider Bryce Weger. The biggest class of the day was 250C. With thirty riders on the line you knew it was going to be great. In the first moto Honda rider Brandon Skinner took the win with
Kawasaki rider Blake Copeland second and Cody Willenborg third. In the second moto Skinner had trouble and could only manage a tenth place finish for the moto and fifth overall. Copeland on the other hand was on the gas and took the second moto win and overall. Honda rider John Loughman finished second for the moto but matched to his first moto ninth place finish gave him third overall. Second overall went to third place moto finisher Willenborg. Some young riders started off their season with one of the best races they have ever had. In the 65Jr class KTM rider Jason Gepford took both moto wins, and the overall after having to come from behind each moto. Second overall went to Aiden Kaiser with Declan Alexander third. The 65Sr class also had a rider who put in a great ride taking both moto wins and the overall... none other than Tanner Chada. Second overall went to Brody Beck with Jeremy Rybak third overall. With all the kudos to the youngsters I

have to give a nod to experienced Suzuki rider Gary Adams who took both moto wins and the overall in +40 as well as +45. It looks like everyone will again be chasing that yellow bike this year. Winter series wrapping up Richmond, Wisconsin - March 6 By Michael Anderson
W
ith four races in the books, the point’s battle heated up in the Sandbox’s winter race series. Once again, racers from all around the area piled into the Sandbox to better their point standings and try out the newest track. This year’s series features a new track every month. This takes away a lot of the home track advantage local racers have over their competitors coming from afar. Also new this year, the morning races of the little guys 50Jr, on up to 14-16. Then starting at 3:00, the big bikes 125cc and up hit the track. One other program change this year is the addition of transponders. Each racer can check his or her lap times and compare with other racers not in their class. As I was in the pits this weekend I even heard small bets between racers as to who was going to have the fastest lap of the night. The transponders also track the number of laps a racer rides during practice days. With this tool the Sandbox holds many contests throughout the winter. +50 racer Mark Deal has won the past two months Thursday most laps contest, riding well over 100 laps each night. This won him his own private track party. Starting the weekend of
races were the 50cc multi speed 4-8. Series leader Conner Klemenhagen, showing speed and consistency throughout the series, held off the hard charging, long jumping Alex Riley for the overall win. Little Alex turned my head as I took photos more than once due to hearing his suspension slam and bottom out from his long distances leaps. This little dude has no fear. Coming in third place was Davis Sunken with his Cobra. This was Davis’s first race of the year at the Sandbox, but you sure couldn’t tell. Davis tore up the track. Josh Boaz also showed speed and consistency throughout the day winning both the 50cc 4-8 and 7-8 classes. Josh either pulled the holeshot or worked his way through the pack to win his motos. Nothing was stopping him today. Josh didn’t race the first two races of the year though. With two races left it will be a close finish in the end for the championship. When it came to the big bikes, it was all Ryan Orres today in the A class. Ryan rode fast and smooth in all his motos. Ryan didn’t get the greatest starts, but he was able to move through the pack. Ryan took the overall in 14-24A, 250A and Open A. The only rider able to give him trouble was Mike Bottolfson who was riding a borrowed bike. Mike will be back on his

RMZ450 next race, and I’m sure these two will put on a great show again. In the C class races, Hunter Ersbo rode both the day and night program taking the overall in nearly every race he entered. Hunter was racing his shiny, new Yamaha YZF250 for the first time. After going back and forth from his trusty two stroke and his new four stroke, Hunter stuck with his four stroke and cleaned up on everyone. Only Jack Slagel was able to beat Ersbo in the Schoolboy 12-16 class. Today’s C class racers are amazingly fast. When I was young and winning C class races, I had nowhere near the speed today’s racers have.

Great Conditions at Hangtime Akron, Indiana - March 20 By Becky Stichter
T
his was the second race of the season put on by Reads Racing and no one could have asked for a better day. The sun was out, the temperature was comfortable, and the track was in excellent condition! We couldn't believe how dry and perfect it looked. Changes had been made to the track in preparation for the upcoming Loretta Lynn's qualifier race that Reads Racing will be hosting at the end of March. Ryan Combs, who races in the 85cc (12-15) class said he liked the track today. He especially enjoyed the downhill rhythm section. He said he attended the qualifier last year and thought he would be again next weekend. Riding today gave him some extra practice time on the track. A racer that caught my attention today was Cady Pressler. Since she was the only competitor in her class (Women's 85250cc), she ran with a combination of other classes. In the first moto she shot off the gates, taking the holeshot and the lead. Pressuring from behind was Spyke's KTM rider Quinton Camp and Allen Kirkpatrick. Pressler rode strong and maintained the overall lead for almost two laps before Camp managed to pass her in the back section. He held it until the end of the moto, but he had no room for error as Pressler was just seconds behind. In the second moto Pressler again came out strong and held the overall lead. Camp threatened several times, but she held him off until the final lap. Right when the white flag came out Camp edged by her, stealing the lead. It was some fine racing. The 250A, B, and C classes all ran together today, with 250C being one of the larger classes. Coming out of the gates in the first moto Braxton Grose (250B) had the holeshot, followed closely by Justin Brumfield (B) and Cody VanLue (C). 250A rider Tyler Lock didn't get the 50

start he wanted, but by the back stretch he was in the lead. After that Lock was the steady leader overall. For the 250C class, VanLue and Jacob Kline were in control running 1-2 respectively. In the second moto, Lock, Grose and VanLue were the leaders of their classes again. There was a little more battling going on behind VanLue this time. Hunter Kreft, Daren Ransbottom and Cody Cook were fighting for the third place.
250A class rider Tyler Lock.
#64 Cady Pressler, #40 Allen Kirkpatrick, and Quinton Camp.
Cook had a little difficulty in this moto, and fell behind. Kreft and Ransbottom took advantage of that, placing them third and fourth. Even though there were only three riders in the 50cc open combined with the 50cc 4-6 class, these young riders get the perseverance award for the day. Right out of the gates the track was rough and ruddy, which caused some problems for the smaller bikes getting good starts. In the first moto Robert Bounds came out of the gate first. He struggled a little, but kept his bike up. Colton Camp came out second. Riley Wheeler had a rough start, but once he got on to the track and got going he did fine. In the second moto Bounds and Camp again pulled ahead of Wheeler. About half way through the race it looked like Wheeler decided enough was enough and pulled back on the throttle. He passed both of the other riders and rode well the rest of the race, placing first overall. The Mini Quad riders showed up to race today! In the first moto, Maddison Guyer came out of the gates strong and it looked like she was going to take the holeshot, then at the very last second, Logan Stanfield passed by her. Brogan Guyer was right behind, and after they had all made it around the first turn, he opened up and passed them. He looked like he couldn't contain himself anymore and he just wanted to go!!! B. Guyer remained in the lead for the rest of the race. Stanfield maintained his second place. Maddison was running in third until Jacob Clingaman came from way back to pass her. It was fun to watch. In the second moto Maddison came out with the holeshot: Not to be stolen from her this time. Brother, Brogan again hit the throttle and soon took the lead. Kyle Brewster stepped it up in this moto. In the first moto he tipped in the second turn and had lost some ground. This time he didn't have any problems and rode well. Really, all of these riders looked like they had been penned up too long and needed to get on the track! After a great day of racing, there was an open ride session. Several riders took advantage of the extra riding time. With the weather so cooperative, and the track in such great condition, why would anyone want the riding to end? Three Hour Race on Trace
Jay Waalen
Grey Eagle, Minnesota - February 21 By Mike Pohl
T
race Lake was the site of the fourth annual Race on Trace. A three mile road course was carved out on about half of the lake’s 250 acres. Eleven teams rode for three-plus hours, making it a true endurance event. Sunny skies and moderate temps made for a rather pleasant race day, and there was even a portable restaurant parked out on the ice with us. The riders launched onto the course in two groups, exactly one minute apart. Matt and Tawnia Stukel kept track of their progress with a new Moto Tally timing system, which made for a quick and accurate turnaround of the results at the end of the day. Organizer Jay Waalen, of Hyde Racing, worked with the Oval Racers Alliance in putting the event together. Their hope is to create a three race ice series, in conjunction with the Moose Ice Race in Neilsville, Wisconsin and the Steel Shoe Ice Race in Wisconsin. The event went off smoothly, and as riders ground through layers of the lake’s crust, a sweeper-equipped Bobcat kept the track tip-top throughout the race. While motorcycles ripped around the course like they were on rails, the other half of the lake was occupied by more conventional tenants - snowmobilers, really fast snowmobiles. They sounded like Formula One race
cars shrieking past at 18,000 rpm. It was a fascinating day watching bikes that seemed attached to the ice as if it were sticky asphalt on a hot day. Lots of work by many unsung heroes makes events like this happen, and it showed. Proceeds went to Lions Club of Grey Eagle. Sponsors were Double R Bar & Grill and Eagle Manufacturing.

Annual Frozen Toe a hit
Start of the Quad race. Coal Valley, Illinois - February 7 By Dave Genung Photos by Michael Sierens
T
ri-City Motorcycle Club is one of the oldest in the state of Illinois, and with an AMA charter of 88, it one of the older in the country. TCMC holds a fun and relaxed Winter Hare Scramble every year, and this year’s event marks a minimum 45 years run for this event. Local motorcycling icon Bill Tuman Sr. puts it out there as being at least that long of a run, but it may be longer. The event is held on the club grounds in Coal Valley every year, BAD weather permitting. It is a shorter format with a one hour time period plus one lap for bikes starting at 11 am, and ATV's starting at 1:00. Motorcycle scoring and awards come before the start of the ATV's. Studded tires are extremely recom-

mended for this winter time ride... The classes are broken down only by engine displacement, with no consideration of age or ability, to simplify scoring. The event is free for spectators and entry for riders is free for club members, non club members need only sign up for a one-day membership. The Frozen Toe for this year took full advantage of average winter weather this past with a huge turnout of spectators and participants.
This year’s course was a cooperative effort of Dave Seyler, Marty Huyten and Carl Larvenze. Other members helped the trio with trail clearing and marking. The course was a big hit with the riders, motorcycles at the front of the field put in eleven laps and ATV's had a shortened course with front runners putting in fourteen. Participants always range from the top of the A-class on down to regular riders seeking a good time, and this year was no exception. It appeared every local shop and club was represented this year. MS Action photography provided the excellent images. At the front of the motorcycles was Ryan

Lenth, Bren Raschke, and Steve Blender. All three were from the 201250cc class. At the front of the ATV's was Adrian Deering, Jamie Weckel and Scott Fridley. These three were from the 401-Open class. Both races went fairly well, the only obvious hitch being a large water hole that developed due to broken ice and during the ATV race it became huge, with no line around it. Not a typical component of the Frozen Toe. Some wet gloves were discarded and one hard charging ATV rider toughed out most of the race without gloves. After the race his hands were torn up pretty good, but he was all smiles. Another tradition of the event is hot chili in the clubhouse for the competitors. This year TCMC Mom Jules Johanson stepped up with a huge layout of complimentary items in addition to the three huge batches of chili. The Frozen Toe is a somewhat unconventional race, and this year was no exception with Bill Tuman Sr. donating the majority of the awards from his decades old personal collection. The coolest trophy awarded was a hunting trophy, having a coon with a hunting dog at the base of the tree. The club considers the annual event a club institution, and there is
