From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman This has been one of the busiest off season winters I have ever experienced. That is a good thing considering all the snow still on the ground up here in the North Country. But what an exciting Supercross season it has been. Watching so many different winners in both the lites and 450 classes is refreshing. It really makes one want to get on the machine and start riding. Hopefully by mid April all this snow will have melted and we can hit the dirt. I have been lucky enough to make it to three SX races and have one more to go in Minneapolis. It is nice to have it back again, but kind of sad knowing this is the last one since they will start tearing down the Metrodome this summer. I have been informed by Feld that this year for the first time Minneapolis will have the pits open to the public like the other races. This is really nice considering we have a lions share of racers trying to make the night program. MN ranks 21 in overall population but has eight to ten racers trying to make the main on any given Saturday. There is the Prince of Belle Plaine currently in third in the 450 class, then you have Jake Loberg with Munn Racing, Dalton Carlson and Justin Brayton of Fort Dodge IA, vying for gates in the 450 class. The lites class is super stacked with home boys. Gavin Faith another Fort Dodge racer and regular in MN, Jesse Wentland, Zack Williams both off of wins at Loretta Lynns last year. Gannon Audette and Alex Martin both recovering from injuries will be a factor when they return to action. Mitch Oldenberg who now resides in TX learned the ropes and paid his dues on MN tracks. He has had a very successful privateer season so far. Jeremy

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... Martin is our lites class standout to date even though he has experienced some bad luck in a couple of events. I had the opportunity to go watch Jeremy train at the Carmichael Ranch this winter just prior to the first East Coast Lites SX. It was an education to say the least. I was overwhelmed by the fact that there is no time to set up for turns and obstacles like one has on an outdoor track. Everything comes at the racer so quickly there is no time to set up, make adjustments, or change lines unless it is done several corners ahead. It gave me a whole new respect for the challenges of Supercross. We also have a full new season to look forward to. Our schedule is once again full for all disciplines, plus we have some road bike rides on the schedule. We will again be hosting our Ride 4 Right this year in August. Make sure to put this date on your calendar as it is a fun way to spend the weekend and still get some relaxing riding in. It is also for a good cause as we always need to keep our legislative efforts on task and up to date on the happenings at the state capital. Our legislators have a way of trying to pass very detrimental and many times moronic bills. So far our efforts have paid off and we have avoided any major catastrophes and plan to keep it that way. Off-roaders, you have a full schedule of events this year between Enduros and Hare Scrambles. Get your training programs up to speed because you will need to be in shape for this year’s schedule. Make sure you check out the rule changes that were passed at last year’s annual meeting. The updated rule book is posted on the website along with the 2013 schedule and contingency events. A big change for off-roaders will be the requirement for numbers at all hare scramble this year. You can request a riding number from the district office. I would highly suggest you request your numbers prior to the first event. This will save you a ton of time at sign up and allow you ample time to get the numbers on your bike as the rule will be enforced. That’s about it for now, I will see all at the tracks and on the trails at our events. Be prepared for a great season!

Deal, Rath Dazzle Rush Lake Rush City, Minnesota - March 2 By Tim McBride

M

ark Deal and Daryl Rath each scored a pair of victories in their respective divisions during the penultimate round of the North Central Ice Racing Championship Series held on Rush Lake located on the outskirts of Rush City, MN. Winning two motorcycle classes seemed to be no issue for long time ice racer Mark Deal as he piloted his 450 Honda to his first win of the afternoon after chasing Jimmy “Quick” Bjerke throughout +30 main event, and sealed the deal via a smooth pass with only a couple corners to spare. During the +40 main event Deal went to work on Bjerke quickly, making the pass on the early leader after one lap of the Le Mans style circuit. Notorious fast guy John Monroe finished third in both events. In the Open B main event Nate McNeilly slid past early leader and previous event winner Shayanna Wilson to score the win. Wilson eventually finished second while closely chased by Justin Ogg and Shawn Fowler. The Pro Quad division saw a familiar face in the winner’s circle in the form of Rath. The veteran topped the Open Pro Quad main and the Pro Dash for Cash while closely chased by Taylor Peterson and Brock Zychowski. Rath’s shot at a three-peat on the day was thwarted by Bryan Skaudis in the Open A Unstudded main event. Skaudis raced to victory while Rath gated poorly, but methodically worked his way up from the back of the pack to finish in second by race’s end. Malatia Wins Championship Denver, Colorado - Mar. 15/16 By Josh Rud www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

T

he last round of Arenacross for the year came to Denver, Colorado this past weekend where the championships were on the line, and all of the points were extremely close. The track this weekend was the longest and most interesting of the season. The venue was a rodeo arena opposed the the standard hockey rink so there was a lot more room to use. The first section of note was adding the over-under bridge taken straight from Vegas, and the start was in a separate section under the seats so the riders would come barreling from under the arena floor to take the over-under jump. The crowd was packed this weekend with a sold out crowd and Ricky Carmichael was on hand to take part in the opening ceremonies. The altitude played a role with Denver being a mile high. This not only effected the riders getting tired, but the bikes not running at 100% potential. In the main Arenacross class points were so close almost anyone could have taken the win, it made things very exciting to watch. On Friday night Tyler Bowers won the first race, when the inversion came up he drew the sixteen giving him the last gate pick. Off the

start he got tangled up and went down briefly moving him back. Half-way through the race he had started gaining some ground and slid out again ending up eighth place in the second race. Kelly Smith took first over-all for the night finishing fourth and second, Jeff Gibson took second overall with a third and a fifth, and Bowers took third. On Saturday night the points were looking in Jeff Gibson’s favor with Bowers having a bad night Friday. In the first race Gibson came out with the win with Bowers behind him in second. Coming into the second race it was make or break. Gibson also pulled the sixteen putting him and Bowers in the back. Gibson got a great start and was up to third on the first lap; Bowers wasn’t able to find that gap and got stuck in the back running in tenth. If things stayed this way Gibson would take the championship. Bowers was trying everything to get some places to pass and kept getting stuck as Gibson moved into the lead. On the second to last lap someone went down in the over-under bridge making a huge pile-up allowing Bowers to jump all the way to fifth place. From there he was able to knock out a few more riders getting up to third place, locking in the championship for the third year in a row. Gibson took second for the year, and Ames third.

Kyle White had a great season up to the last event where suffered a broken femur.

Maxx Malatia wraps-up the championship, getting congratulated by Travis Bannister

CYCLE USA, April 2013

Ames was pretty upset with the outcome because of the race for the championship. If they had not reset the points he was in quite a large lead to take second place for the year, and Bowers was un-touchable with over a one hundred point lead. Coming into the weekend the west coast lites class was as close as you could get with the top three only one point away from each other. Anyone could take the win; even fourth place Tyler Villopoto had a chance to take the title being 20 points behind. On Friday night Maxx Malatia on his took the win, Travis Bannister finished second coming out for his first and only race this year, as well as Bryce Stewart in third. Kyle White finished fourth while the third rider in contention for the title, Michael Lang did not finish. Coming in Saturday night’s race all Malatia

needed to do was get a sixth place finish to take the win, but he was still out there giving it his all. The gates dropped with Tanner Moore out of Kansas taking the holeshot with Malatia right behind him. This actually didn’t change the entire race with Malatia most likely playing things a little safe to make sure to stay up on two wheels and get the victory in the bag. White on the other hand had a very unfortunate end of the race taking a fall in the rhythm section breaking his femur. He was out of the hospital by Monday morning and heading home with a couple months of recovery ahead. Moore ended up taking the win for the night with Malatia second and Bannister taking third. This gave Malatia the red number 1 plate for the West Coast Lites Championship, a hard fought battle and well deserved. White was second overall for the year. I spoke with Malatia about what it took for him and his BWRengines team to every arenacross round this year. “It came down to just money, we were

driving to all the rounds. Just to get the gas and hotel money was really the toughest thing. I worked with a buddy so I was lucky he was lenient with giving me days off, but sometimes we had to leave a couple hours later than we really wanted to. We had an e35 van jammed with four bikes and seven people just to get everyone to all the rounds. Let’s just say the drive to Texas was hell. Then the problem was finding time to ride because it was cold out by us and since we were driving, we would get home late Sunday and have to leave on Wednesday. I was a little nervous coming into Friday with the whole elevation thing I was curious how fast everyone was going to get tired. I ended up getting a lucky break with Lang going down, so coming into Saturday I was pretty confident. Looking forward I’m signed up for the Toronto Supercross. I’m going to go up there and feel it out and go round for round to see how I do. I want to make sure to give Brian White a huge shout out for keeping all the bikes working

great all season. He worked and ran his shop on top of all the bike maintenance and getting us to all

the rounds, he was working his tail off to make this happen.”

Triplecross Banquet Warms Winter Wisconsin Dells, WI - Jan. 12 By Dave Hollub

T

he family nature of Motocross becomes so evident when the banquets occur. Each time another family walked into the room they were welcomed with smiles and greetings from their extended track families. Peewee racers that hadn’t seen each other since the last race a couple months ago immediately formed into energy bundled packs. The older racers went right back into bench racing mode as they relived battles from past seasons. As I walked around the room I not only noticed the happy faces on everyone, I also spotted a row of tables covered with the year’s quest in the form of some pretty cool plaques ready to be taken home to keep memories of 2012 alive for years to come. Against a back wall was another row of tables covered by sponsor gifts to the series racers. Quite a return for a $15 fee to join the Triplecross Series, thanks to the generosity of the series sponsors. Before everyone sat down I got a chance to talk with

Women’s class champion Kendra Tutt about 2012 and what it meant to her, “Last season went really well for me despite a few minor set backs and a couple injuries. I had a concussion and separated shoulder, but I bounced back, and was able to improve all season and everything went awesome. Triplecross is really great. I love all the tracks in the series. For 2013 I got a new Honda CRF250 for Christmas and I’m really looking forward to racing it. I set my goals higher for next year, and plan to keep it on two wheels and stay strong. I want to send a huge thank you to Rob’s Performance, Whispering Pines Development, My Mom and Dad, my grandparents, and Mercer NAPA Auto Parts- They all do so much for me and I couldn’t be here without them all.” Triplecross is set up so everyone competes on equal footing using the standard District 16 class structure while incorporating three tracks for ten races. This season (as well as in 2013) Aztalan, Arkansaw, and Gravity Park played host to the series. Racers were expected to compete at a minimum of one race at each track to be eligible

for end of season awards at the banquet. In addition if racers compete in an additional four events at any of the tracks they became eligible for the door prize drawings as well as the new Honda CRF50 donated by Sportland 2. There also were prize drawings at each race for triplecross participants. Jacob Jesko took the time to fill me in on his past season and future plans. “My season went pretty good, in the district standings I got third in Supermini and fourth in 85Sr which I think is a pretty good accomplishment for only my second season racing. Triplecross went even better getting first in Supermini and second in 85Sr. I The Telfer boys had a great Triplecross season. really like the three tracks in the series and can’t wait to ride any racer needing a quick trackside repair or them again. Next year definitely I plan to try just advice was able to collect this prize winning again in both Triplecross and D16. I tonight. So here is a fair warning, look out in also plan to try for Loretta’s. I’ll still be rac2013 because Big John will be all over the pits ing 85Sr and then my 150 in Supermini. I on his new ride. have to say thanks to Finish Line Engines and As the night ended and everyone drifted my Mom and Dad.” off to keep the bench racing going series diOnce everyone enjoyed a great dinner it rector Harvey Schave filled me in on the was time for the awards. This season everyTriplecross Series future, “First off I really one that was eligible got a great looking want to thank all the sponsors who were there plaque. Then came time to collect on the door for us in 2012- Yamaha, KTM, RIDE, Sportprizes donated by the series sponsors. Due to land2, Southeast Sales, Spectro Oils, FMF, the generosity of all the sponsors everyone ProAction, MSR, Meehan’s Juice Plus, Prowas called up five times before the tables Taper, Rob’s Performance and the Aztalan were empty. After all the door prizes were Inn. The tracks in 2012 will stay the same for claimed it was time for the Honda CRF50 to 2013. We had one rainout at the final Aztalan be given away. The room was silent as everyrace so we adjusted the required races to be in body concentrated on the ticket number being the drawing for the pitbike tonight which called out and finally the lucky racer was none made quite a few more people eligible to win other than John Meehan. While everyone it. The 2012 season was really good and once shared a disappointment not to have won you again we will hold our first race at Aztalan on could tell they were all pretty happy for Big April 14th. Right now it looks like all of our 2012 sponsors will be back and we are negotiating with Honda to have some contingency events this season. I also want to thank everyone that helps out at the races and the banquet.” At the end of the night you could tell everyone was excited to see winter end and get the bikes out to start burning some laps to back up the bench racing stories going around. So be sure to mark your calendars for April 14th and get out to Aztalan for the first 2013 Triplecross race, who knows you might take home a champion plaque next year. It took a couple of hours to get through all of the classes but it was fun seeing everyone and it is always a joy to hand out awards that are so hard to earn. The 250A and Open A class titles were once again won by Gavin Kadlec, after a season long and hard fought battle with runner-up Connor Ahlers. The two battled all season and the title came down to the last few races. Congratulations to both of them for all the effort. Kadlec was a three class winner as he also won 14-24A.

Monster Energy Supercross

#800 Mike Alessi with a great start.

St. Louis, Missouri - March 2 By James Pinckard, Photos courtesy of Hoppenworld.com

T

hey say St. Louis is the Gateway to the west, but I see it as the Gateway to Cycle USA country to the east!! With every rider still dreaming about going riding it’s only natural to go see the best riders in the world do what we all love. Over 60,000 people did just that for round nine of the Monster Energy Supercross. Just like the Midwest tracks that have the best dirt, the St. Louis AMA Supercross track in the Edward Jones Dome has the best racing surface of any event. With the dirt being moist and tacky it creates great lines in the corners, and the result is great racing!!! Before the racers took to the line the crowd let out the biggest cheer of the night when Factory Honda’s Kevin Windham made his famous transfer at the start of the show. When Kevin spoke to the crowd about his retirement, he received a standing ovation. A true crowd favorite. In the 250 Main Geico Honda rider Will Hahn took the holeshot with Suzuki’s Blake Wharton on his tail. With the two heat winners out front it looked like bad news for the rest of the pack. Dean Wilson was on the move, and I mean on the move making passes every-

where, working his way up to fourth from 12th. Vince Friese was putting in a great ride in third but Wilson make quick work of him and set out after Wharton. Wilson reeled in Wharton and made the pass for second! Hahn was laying down fast laps out front but now Wilson was only two seconds behind at the halfway point. Wilson caught Hahn and dove inside Hahn making a pass only to have Hahn cut under making a pass back! Lap after lap Wilson Hounded Hahn but at the flag it was Hahn taking the win with Wharton third. It was Hahn’s second win in a row. After such a great race how could the 450 race be any better? Let me tell you how when the gate dropped Moto Concepts Suzuki rider Mike Alessi took the holeshot with Barcia on his Honda second and James Stewart third. Stewart made quick work of Barcia for second and then passed Alessi for the lead and set sail. Villopoto made the pass for third on Alessi in a yellow flag then a RED FLAG!!! The riders lined up single in the order they were running at the time of the red flag. Well all but one, Villopoto was docked for passing Alessi by jumping a double with the Red Cross flag out. With the restart Stewart was out front and Alessi got a great jump to pass Barcia for second.

The ever-popular Kevin Windham closing out his racing career. CYCLE USA, April 2013 21

Jeremy Martin had a great showing to finish fifth in the 250 class!

Chad Reed moved to fourth with Villopoto in fifth. In one corner both Reed and Villopoto passed Alessi. Dungy was next to work past Alessi. Villopoto made an inside move on Reed and then kept charging, and passed Barcia on lap nine. Villopoto kept the heat on Stewart and on lap ten made an inside move for the lead. But Bubba was not done and at the end of the next rhythm section made his own inside move and took over the lead heading into the triple. But again there were Red Cross flags out so Stewart pulled up and rolled the section like he is supposed to. At the end of the section there were yellow flags and it was clear that Stewart was not in race mode and Villopoto jumped him on the yellow taking Stewart out of his line and making the pass for the lead!! What? Again? This time the AMA said it was legal and did not dock him any laps. But for me he did at least gain ground on the Red Cross and use it to put him inside. The sad thing is it

was clear that Stewart was not expecting it and it knocked him off his pace while Villopoto set off charging in the lead. With all that going on Barcia was now on Stewart and had Reed and Dungy with him. With seven laps to go Barcia made a hard pass on passed Stewart but made a mistake getting into a tough block and Stewart, Reed and Dungy all passed him. After that action the pace settled and the finish was Villopoto, Stewart, Reed, Dungy and then Barcia fifth ahead of Millsaps. istrict 17’s season opener for the GP series was held at the Midwest MX facility in Chandlerville, IL. The Canton M/C club once again teamed up with the Midwest MX facility to put on a great season opener. The club laid out a 2.6 mile loop that consisted of the sand MX track, a large grass track, and trails that had a little bit of everything, but rideable for everyone. This mix made for a great course that tested all the riders, regardless of a typical racing preference. The weather forecast showed a chance of

snow in the late afternoon, possibly causing a repeat of a snow storm that happened part way through the event last year. The morning started off cold and it stayed that way all day. Luckily the snow never came, but with the lap times around six minutes resulting in twenty-four minute motos, all the riders quickly warmed up. The newly added 14-29 class was up first and Ryan Smith led from start to finish in

both motos. Being the first moto of the day they had a smooth trail, but they also had to Continued on page 28

Gran Prix, Continued from P 25 burn in the lines in the grass track. Smith admitted the second moto of the day was a whole lot different than the first, and he had to ride smart to conserve energy once he was out front. The +30 class was up next and motocrosser Tim Dameron on his Liepold Honda/ Moose Racing CRF450 got the holeshot with hare scramble to motocross convert Jeremy Smith on his Free Moto Pix Kawasaki KX450 was in tow. Ryan Moss on his Moose Racing/ Woodstock KTM 250XC snuck past Smith and then heading to the grass track section kept the gas on a little longer than Dameron, and took the lead. Moss never looked back and took the win, and then won again in moto two. Moss also took both moto wins in the 122-250cc class. The 85cc class had some great racing. Local rider (lives across the street) Taylor Hamblin in his first race ever took the holeshot in moto one only to

have his front wheel wash out in the first corner. Alex Moss snuck around and got the lead until the grass track where Thor Rick assumed the lead. Somewhere in the woods Hamblin got back around and took the lead and the win. In the second moto Rick took the lead early and never looked back to take the win. In the 65cc class Garret Ward on his Fox Valley OffRoad Kawasaki took both moto wins ahead of Ryan Bienemann. The 122cc-Open class saw a three way battle from riders of different disciplines. Motocrosser Blake Copeland got the holeshot with newly advanced to AA Hare Scramble rider Travis Ward on his Service Honda CR250 giving chase. Lurking in the back as he always does was Matt Dissell on his RTR Kawasaki KX450. Dissell made his way into second and started moving in on Copeland. On lap three Dissell made the pass only to fall on the MX track, letting Copeland back around. Dissell remounted and tracked down

Copeland making a pass for the lead and then took the win. In moto two Dissell moved into the lead while Copeland went down early, and retired to the pits. Ward put in a late race

charge and almost reeled in Dissell but ran out of time and settled for second in the moto and overall as Mike Tinkham put in two consistent motos, finishing third each time.

Alex Moss finished fourth in the 85cc class.

Lars Valin finished fifth in both Open class motos.

you’ll be surprised on how much you’ll have. Through the pits the same thing was heard over an over again; Good job Canton M/C! They would also like to thank all the club members and sponsors for making this a successful event. Sponsors: Halls Cycle, Dr. Ugs Drugstore Café, Bent Bones BBQ, and Fulton County Septic.

The iron man award(s) go out to the father and son team of Jay and Jared Hall. They both competed in three classes during the day on their Hall’s Cycles Husqvarnas. Father Jay had a successful day and took the win in both Vintage and +45. Jared put in some great rides, but by his last moto of the day had the exhausted look in his eyes. That didn’t stop him from charging hard all the way to the finish line. Even with the cold temps everyone that raced commented what a fun day it was. The course had a great mix of everything, making it both challenging and fun for all riders. The whole point of the GP series is to come out and have fun riding your with your buddies. For the motocross riders this series gives you that extra ride time, plus the chance to try woods that aren’t as tight as your typical hare scrambles. For the off-road rider it gives you the experience of the mx track with tamed down jumps, plus the bonus of getting the feal of the intensity of MX. If you haven’t tried a GP yet, look at the dates and put one on the calendar,

eads Racing welcomed racers back, holding the season opener at Hangtime in Akron, IN. The track was in very good condition, considering how wet and snowy it has been recently. It was a cold day, with some snowflakes coming down, but people still came out to race. The big bikes hit the track first, running a few classes together. Mitchell Highbaugh of the Open B class took the holeshot in the first moto. Nick Myers led the way for the Open C class, followed by Zack Schneider and Dakota Souza. Myers maintained his lead, and took the win in the moto. In the second moto, Myers was able to cross the checkered line first again, followed by Schneider. In the Quad A class, Roger Gluth led the way out of the gates in the first moto, with Greggory Miller pressuring hard from behind. Gluth and Miller had a good battle the entire moto. Near the end, Miller found a section where he was able to pass Gluth, and take the lead. In the second moto, Gluth led out of the gates again, followed closely by Miller and Will Wood. Miller pressured Gluth the first few laps. Late in the race Miller found an opportunity in the corner to pass Gluth. It

looked like Miller was going to take another win but then he had some machine problems in the back section, just before the finish line. Gluth was able to take advantage, pass Miller, and go on to win. Dakota Kedik, mounted on a KTM, took the lead in both motos of the 125cc 2-stroke class. Austin Wilkins and Isaiah Hiatt chased after Kedik, but were not able to catch him today. One of the larger classes was 85cc (1215). Cameron Middleton, riding on a KTM, shot off the gates fastest in the first moto followed by Chase Boykin and Trevor Lomperski. Lomperski passed Boykin early in the race and continued to ride hard, but he wasn’t able to catch Middleton. In the second moto Middleton was first out of the gates again, followed by Justin Stichter and Lomperski. Middleton was able to hold everyone back again this moto, taking 1-1 finishes. Lomperski worked his way around Stichter, for another second place finish. The biggest class of the day came from the 250C riders. In the first moto, Stephen Nagy was the leader out of the gates, followed by Zack Schneider and Nick Myers. Corey Mcclung came up fast from further back, and was able to pass Nagy in the second lap. Nagy pressured Mcclung the rest of the moto,

but Mcclung maintained his lead, and Myers finished behind Nagy. In the second moto, Mcclung and Nagy battled it out for the first two positions, while Myers and Jared Meranda fought for third. Mcclung was able to pull ahead of everyone, and take another win, followed by Nagy and Meranda. It was a cold day of racing, but it didn't stop people from coming out to the season opener. Steel Shoe Three Hour Campbellsport, Wisconsin - January 20 By Dave Hollub

A

s another Wisconsin winter drones on it becomes apparent that for many die hard dirtbike racers there is one day that shines brighter than the rest. As always, the third Sunday in January means one thingThe Steel Shoe Fund 3 Hour Endurance Race! This year a record seventy teams were entered

in four classes to take on the Jeff Fredette designed course on Kettle Moraine Lake. After a late week heat wave which drove temperatures up into the 40s, there were some serious questions whether the race would go until an arctic front Saturday night drove the thermometer into negative readings. As everyone began arriving at Nan Sea’s Tiki Bar and Grill Sunday morning, the temperature had risen to a balmy -6.

JR Schnabel proves just how fast and aggressive you can ride on good ice.

A huge turnout made for a great day of racing on really good ice.

Fredette battled a slushy surface as he laid the course out on Saturday and there was also the lack of snow to define the course. Volunteers came to the rescue, working late into the night placing corner markers into the ice to make sure nobody strayed away from the 6.75 mile layout. Once the bikes were finished in tech inspection, and the riders meeting was finished the first wave headed out for their course sighting lap. Fredette led the first group and by the time seventy bikes made their way around it the course was now easy to see on the nice hard ice. This year the Lightweight Team class was first to get the green flag, and John Stewart of the Lemon Pie Productions team was out front leading the class onto the course. The Lemon Pie bike stayed out front all the way to the finish leaving the rest of the class to battle it out. At the one hour point the father/ son team of Eddie and Tyler Smulders representing Rob’s Performance were running second (7th overall) with Retriever Racing close behind in third (9th overall). The Rob’s Performance bike slowly began falling back and by the end of two hours was sitting in fifth (34th overall) while

Jim Beckman (65) grabs the Middleweight holeshot.

Team Markel moved up into third with Moto on Ice Lites close behind. When the checkers flew at the three hour mark Lemon Pie Productions had finished seventeen laps to claim first in class and fifth overall. Retriever Racing was second (11th overall) while Team Markel held onto the final podium step. Jim Beckman on the Far-Frum-Losin bike led the Middleweight class around the holeshot corner but had Ian Malinowski from Kids & Fossils right on his rear wheel. By the hour mark the 3Joe’s bike was out front. Team Just The Tip was right behind while team WhyTheBleepAreWeDoinThis was third. At the two hour mark 3Joe’s had slipped back into fourth while Just The Tip was the class leader. Carlo Rossi was running third with the 3Joe’s right on their back fender. At the checkers team Carlo Rossi had moved into the front of the class (9th overall) to claim the win. Just The Tip was right behind to grab second and WhyThe-

BleepAreWeDoinThis finished third. When the Heavyweight class got the green flag Dan Mischler aboard the Beaver Cycle Club entry was out front with team Smith/Bushman in a close second. While Beaver Cycle never fell off the lead position all race the rest of the class was not ready to give them the win easily. At one hour Heinecke Auto was in second and team Old & Broken was right behind with FKH+50 drafting off his rear fender. By the two hour mark Old & Broken (JR Schnabel/ Jeremy DeRuyter/ Ben Carlson) was closing in on Beaver Cycle as they were now running first and second overall. The Sore Losers had moved up to claim third but were getting pressure from Heinecke Auto (Andy Heinecke/Jack Sutherland). When the checkers came out at 3 hours team Old & Broken was pushing hard but just couldn’t catch the leader Eric Mischler aboard the Beaver Cycle bike. Heinecke Auto was fourth overall at the

finish to claim third for the class. Dan and Eric Mischler talked about the race later as Dan filled me in first “This was definitely a very different start today as they put the smaller bikes out first and we went last in heavyweights. I just tried to get away fast to avoid any first corner mayhem that might happen. I was lucky I got a good start and avoided the guy that went down which slowed a lot of the others. Once out on the course I just tried to watch the other riders and where they were on the lake. I tried to judge the corners and put in as fast of corner speed as I could. The ice in my half of the race was great, there was a little wind so you had to be ready in the corner for it. It was harder working through the smaller bikes early in the race but I got through pretty easy with no problems.” Eric Mischler filled in the rest of the race, “It made it real easy that Dan got the holeshot and moved us out front right away. I

just had to put in good laps and be sure to keep that number one (JR Schnabel/ Jeremy DeRuyter/ Ben Carlson) plate back away from me. They were the guys to beat today, they came in with a strong team. We had been racing against those guys since we were little

kids so it was kind of neat to come to something like this thirty years later. My hat is off to Jeff Fredette, we wouldn’t be in this position without him. He worked with us a lot last season and he made the rear tire we ran today, and John Rosine made the front- we could

ride them anywhere we wanted and had great traction. I had to get creative for my half of the race to avoid the big holes and bumps on the ice. The plow guys did a great job keeping the track clear so I could make passes where ever I needed. Thanks to Beaver Cycle Club, they paid our entry today, Mischler’s Harley Davidson is our flagship sponsor.” I also talked with Troy Siahaan who rode the Polar Express bike today as a reporter for Motorcycle.com. Siahaan who recently transplanted from Los Angeles to Chicago has never ridden ice before. “Ice? I have it in my freezer in my house but that is about it. This was awesome, it was so much fun. I have a road racing background so this was unlike anything I have ever done on pavement. It is a whole different mentality from what I was used to, on ice I found out you want to lean the bike over so much farther. On an ice bike the throttle is your friend to get out of trouble but on a road bike it usually gets you in more trouble. I could have gone for some warmer weather but it was awesome. I would love to come back again next year if I am in the area and have a bike to ride. I heard about this race from another journalist that did it last year, He kept talking about how cool it was, but I was still in California. I was lucky enough to get Yamaha on board to supply a bike, my buddy Tom Roderick and Tim Olson came along to ride also. We got a chance to ride Saturday on the South end of Lake Winnebago, it was about 20 or

30 degrees warmer so I had a great time. Conditions were great and by the time we came today Tom and I had about 45 minutes of ice riding experience. It was a shock to walk out this morning into below zero weather. I really want to thank Yamaha and especially the Drummond family- they provided the bike and just the great hospitality with a trailer, space heater, food, drinks, just everything you need on a race day.” The last class to get the green flag was the Ironmen led down the start straight by Charlie Deutscher. Despite a late start Jeff Fredette burned up the course and by the time three laps were in the books he was the lead Ironman, running sixth overall. Jay Waalen was in second (25th overall) and Bill DeGroot was in third holding Stephen Anderson back in forth. By the two hour mark Fredette was still the leader with Waalen and Degroot staying in their positions as they were moving up in the over-all positions. When the checkers came out the top three Ironmen were Fredette

(3rd overall), Waalen (13th), and DeGroot (31st). Once everyone finished racing I talked to the Steel Shoe Fund race coordinator Chris Daronco “The last two years we had a lower

turnout so it was great to rebound this year. The course was again set by Fredette with a great mix of tight corners and fast stretches. I think the guys liked the real tight spots because they had to work a bit harder and stayed a bit warmer working harder. Team Mischlers (Beaver Cycle Club) came wanting to kick some butt this year and they did a great job out there. JR (Schnabel) was closing on them and given a couple more laps just may have caught them- I guess we will never know. I think everything went really well, the workers came out and did a great job. Jeff Fredette, the ice god, helps make us the best ice race around because he does a great job putting in something new every time. Our sponsors are Pro-Gold Screws- Fox Valley Supplies, Fredette Racing Products, Suburban Harley Davidson, Moose Racing, Cedar Creek Motorsports, Bell Industries, Action Motorsports Groups, Nan Sea’s Tiki Bar, Southeast Sales, Spiderwebmxpics, Joe’s Cable Ties, and the Campbellsport Fire DeLance Wollin on the Retriever Racing Heavyweight bike. partment. the clubs and individuals that came out and worked, without them we couldn’t get this done.” Once again the Steel Shoe Fund 3 Hour race helped take the edge off for guys waiting until the Wisconsin winter gives way to spring so the bikes can come out without studded tires. The day was a success for the fund to aid injured riders by raising money, as well as awareness. If you are sitting at home all winter dreaming of riding your bike keep the event in mind. Megacross/ Fox Valley Banquet Wedron, Illinois - November 10

N

ovember is known for some interesting weather patterns. Being the end of the season, team races, play days and the like are regular events as the season comes to a close. No different this year was the play day/ awards presentation at Fox Valley Off Road to reward the riders who competed for well deserved year-end awards. Not to mention the play day could be the last ride of the season for many riders. Everyone was well aware of that green monster (visible on radar) on the horizon this Sunday, weather "experts" said 10am, then noon, then 3pm. We started the day with the smells of Patty's home cookin ... very good stuff. We swung the gates open at 9:30 am anticipating a much smaller crowd, as a threat of sideways rain and 45 degrees usually keeps riders home these days. Then to our amazement everyone came in about the same time and it was pretty intense for about 30 minutes. Almost immediately the sounds of bikes and atv's filled the air as riders starting pounding a few laps, and exploring the trails. As the day went on, the lower track was getting way to congested so we had to do some splitting riders into groups. Motocross, woods, play riders, heck even a good size group of trials guys came out, all exploring different things about the park. Perfect time to sound the lunch bell, and get started feeding the masses. Thankfully the person in charge of the food purchasing convincingly decided to acquire the right amount of beef, pork and all the rest of the ''fixins" as there were a lot of hungry riders to be fed. In 2012 riders raced a lot, earned points and the personalized awards given out to them hopefully will be "keepers" for a long time. Thousands of photographs from a wide variety of photographers (Ryder Photos, Eslinger Photos, Jen Wamhof, Brett Wilkinson, Tanya Boyles, Don Mcdonald, Free Motopix, Rickie Foote, Sammy, and even Garrett Ward). 19,717 files (photos) were sorted and used for this endeavor. After a while it's a blur. The awards presentation was "rushed" a little more then usual as the winds picked up and a few strategic placed team and year members held onto poles. (2) 40'x40' tents in that weather, lets just say we are not sailors. We started off the presentation with Iron man winners. These riders rode both Megacross and Fox Valley Off Road Hs/Gp events. They have earned and learned different techniques, whether it's jumping table tops, hammering trails, or running big sweeping bean fields. Iron man has become something the kids really enjoy and it keeps them interested. Running three different types of racing gives them a variety, which helps them learn to be more

complete riders. Megacross awards and on to Fox Valley HS overalls were presented. During the presentation, we also handed out the thousands of dollars of Fly products and assorted door prizes, and wrapped it all up at 3pm. A complete list of year-end award winners is posted on the website. Timing can be everything. As we wrapped up the day, the rain came in just as we put the last tables, chairs and tents away. Many riders and families jumped in to help get things put away quickly. Pulling three tents, 30 tables, and 150+ chairs in 15 minutes has to be a record of some kind??? They simply seen something that needed to be done and did it. It's so cool to see everyone work together like this and it made for a fitting end

to a good day of sportsmanship, riding fun, and simply hanging out with friends. Slightly over 750 some riders/ families came out to the abbreviated play day. Special mention - Hall's Cycles was on hand with demo rides on new Husqvarna motorcycles, and Fox Valley Cycles and Service Honda had some new machines on display. Chicago Ossett, new comer Dean Herman had his machines out and amazing how the kids took to those quiet electric trials machines. The year started out with a bang, then ended the same way. Thank You to all the riders and families from our team at Megacoss/ Fox Valley Off Road and our sponsors. 2013 is here, and we are all looking forward to this season! CYCLE USA, April 2013 39

For 2014, our format will be different. We are going to eliminate the ATV class due to lack of entries. This will allow us to run two separate races, dividing the AMA and non AMA tires, so you can enjoy this event on the tires you prefer, or both if you’re feeling ironmanish.” “We have been able to support Big Brothers/ Big Sisters in a big way since 2005. District 17 Awards Banquet Ottawa Illinois - January 26 By D17 Directors Photos courtesy of Free Motopix

T

his year’s banquet started off with some talented kids who race, but also take part in other hobbies. Often we forget that racers have many talents. Jarred Hall, Alex Moss, and Garrett Ward started off the night with the national anthem playing a couple saxophones and a trumpet. We were all impressed with their abilities and they did a great job. Special thanks to Tammy Hall who help them set this up. The banquet had a good attendance, not record breaking but in these times over 500 is rock solid. It was fun and special night, as all the competitors who have earned awards did so with dedication, competitive spirit and hard work! District 17 Enduro Director Ryan Moss... The 2012 Enduro season saw ten events, traveling to many different places with varied terrains to challenge even the best riders. The series saw some great events, thanks to all the clubs for putting the events on and to the riders for making it a great season. Once again our AA and Grand Enduro Champion was Jeff Fredette on his Moose Racing/ FRP KLX450. Jeff has been challenged by up and comers, but year after year he has shown why he is a champion by putting in

consistent rides and coming out on top. This year we had a few good class battles through the season. In the 250A class motocross convert Anthony Krivi and up and comer Chase Robinson battled with Robinson coming out on top. Both riders were moved to AA for the 2013 season due to the good rides all season. In the Senior A class Tom Elliott and Darren Morgan were the front runners from the start with Tom taking the win for the season. Rich Mertes was the “kid” in the Masters class and took command of the class right from the get go. Wally Mika took the Super Senior win over long time champ Tom Graf and hard charging Tim Graf. Nick Graf moved from the C class to 200B for the 2012 season, and took the win in his first try. The District 17 Randy Hatcher Sportsman Award went to Dave Edsall this year. This was a special year for Dave and he was also the recipient of the Sportsmen award given by Jay Hall and the Hare Scramble series. Many know that Edsall has supported both the Enduro and Hare Scrambles for many years. The best part is that neither Jay nor I (Moss) talked about the Sportsman’s awards. We both keep it a secret until the night of the banquet, which means that Dave truly deserves the awards if

A happy Blake Phelps with his Hare Scrambles award

both of us picked him without knowing it. We also had some great racing in our GP series this summer. This relatively new racing is about riding and racing your friends, getting quality time on the machine and seeing how you stack up. Numbers and signup for the district improved greatly from the inaugural 2011 season, and it looks like even an better plan for 2013 with eleven point paying events. Keeping your racing fresh and fun is what Gran Prix racing is all about. MX, SX, HS, End, all types of riders come and play

on specially laid out courses with mixes of all kinds of obstacles, GP racing is the new and up and coming trend. Thanks to all the riders and families that came to the banquet! Trials Director Dan Loer... We had ten trials events in 2012 with 291 total entries and 73 individual riders which made for another good year. The top rider only receives the overall award in each of the nine points paying classes. We had Ralph Littlefield receive his champ award from the Sportsman class, Tim Freed in Intermediate, Ryan Rivenburgh in Novice, Kailey Rivenburgh in Women and Jeff Franklin in the Senior class. We have several families compete together. Of those, we had one father/ son, one brother/ sister, CYCLE USA, April 2013 43

Special recognition also goes to the entire NITRO crew led by Ralph (and Nancy) Littlefield for hosting eight of the ten events, Charlie Shanks as the NITRO web master, Tony Meo as referee and host clubs including Rock River Riders, Variety Riders and the Peoria Motorcycle Club. Special thanks also to landowners including Gary Lingbeck (Lena), Donnie Meehan (Elmwood), Tito Nappi (Pearl City) and Aaron Vincer (Motorsports Park-Byron). I want to sincerely thank my wife Jennifer for her support, all the riders for their participation and everyone else who contributed to the 2012 trials season. We have another ten events lined for 2013. We want to continue growing trials so it’s great to see new venues and opportunities to partner with other organizations. We welcome everyone to come and check out trials, so we will see you in the sections!! Hare Scrambles Director Jay Hall... 2012 was a very good year in the district for Hare Scrambles, except for all the dust, 100 degree days and lots of sun, and did I say it was 100 degrees! Even with the heat, turn outs where good and lots of good racing was to be had. The conditions didn’t stop Cody Bollinger from topping the AA class. Talking

about bringing the heat, how about Wally Mika at 59 years young winning the +50 class again, and I heard that he just turned 60 and has been ridding all winter to stay ready for those young guys he races. On a lighter note Jerimy Hanlin won +30B and will be moving up next year to the A class and said 2014 he will turn 40, and will be gunning for me (Jay) in the +40A class! Well he will get his wish early, I’m riding +30A this year, not getting younger myself you know.

Dirt Track’s Blake Claeys with his family.

Back to the banquet, we did something this year that made it run much smoother by handing out the awards in the big room along with MX. Only had a few jackets at the end of the night so thanks for the great attendance and hope you all had a good evening of bench racing and telling good stories. Our Mark Cain Sportsman Award this year went to David Edsall a long time rider of the dist. and a friend to all cycles. It was al-

most like a life time award after we talked about all he has done for the district. Last Tammy and I would like to thank everyone out there for all the helping at the races - from the clubs and promoters, to the racers and their families, thanks for a great

2012 and hope to have an even better 2013. See you at the track. Dirt Track Director Stan Camp... The banquet was a great success again this year. There was a low dirt track turn-out but for those that were able to make it a great time was had. I believe everybody is anxious for 2013 to get started, I know I am. We have a good schedule this year with plenty of races and hopefully even more racers. It has been such a pleasure to watch these competitors go from the 50cc classes to becoming pro riders. I hope I can do this for many more years to come. Flat track is such a unique sport and it has a great following of participants and spectators. I hope to see you all in April. Motocross Director Gerhard Ward... Motocross kicked off extremely early in 2012. June like temps in March got everyone out on the bikes early, only to be rewarded with hot and dry conditions all summer. The tracks of d17 like always did a great job keeping this going smoothly. With the first glances at the 2013 schedule, it looks like one of the best mx/sx schedules we have seen in years. We lost a track, gained two and eventually three so as the things find center, the process is moving forward. Welcoming KI Tracks into the MX fold, after a GP race season last year they have gone forward with five events in 2013, three of which are MX races. A “new” comer at an established facility, Dave Seitz revived Muddy Waters,

and has a full slate of mx races this summer. At the time of this printing there hopefully will be another SX track coming into the fold for 2014. Don’t forget all the tracks and clubs work extremely hard to put on some of the best racing that you will find anywhere. Riders last year had some tough battles, Quad C class in MX was closely contested. 30B/C as well. Paxton Kerber and Parker Smith had their battle again this year, those two stayed close all season long. Don Large and Orville Kline in the “ole” man classes were head to head all summer. Many close races and a few runaways. 125cc classes in both mx and stadium had the closest battles. The Mini classes were rock solid again this season. Good to see youth in a sport that has so many distractions as the riders evolve. On a somber note we lost some good guys this year, prayers go out to the families. None of which were racing crash related issues, but they all were strong competitors in our events, or were riders in this district at one time… Dillon, Greg, Hank, and Jeremy, you guys will be missed at the events this summer no question. As much as last year had a great start, this year we sit and watch it snow more in March then last December. Riding is coming fast, hopefully you have picked out the events that are the “must” race list for the summer. We have. Racing in District 17 has become more and more diverse, riders can choose to do many types of events, many series, loads of contingency events, etc. Make sure to look at the individual track sites, but don’t forget to look deep into the district site as well, everything is there to help you have the best season ever. Good luck in 2013, stay up and realize that not many other areas have the choices and events we enjoy here in this district! Racing in D17 is cost effective, competitive, and fun. Don’t miss out!

Short Day at Rock Dam Rock Dam, Wisconsin - January 27

R

ain-outs and rain shortened days are something we all have dealt with in racing... but it is rather uncommon in January. The Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association (CWIRA) visited Rock Dam Lake, just east of Eau Claire, WI on the twenty-seventh of January. While it was warm enough, conditions right from the start were questionable. A lot of good ice... but a steady mist turned into an eventual drizzle... not ideal for ice racing. Visibility quickly became the challenge of the day. Half way through the first set of motos and heats, it was a drizzle, eventually turning into a very wet snow. After plowing the track during intermission, it was coming down hard enough that a good call was made to run finals for those earlier heat races, use the first motos from the other classes, and call it a day. No one complained. Even with conditions what they were... racers are there to race, and they provided some great action, impaired vision or not. The morning started with racing on the GP course, left and right turns mixed in. Off the start in the Amateur class first heat, Mike Trulen grabbed the early lead into the hairpins, but then slid out, dropping to third. Corey Schroeder took full advantage of the situation to go ahead and lead with Jack Potter on Husqvarna in second. As Schroeder stretched his lead a little in each lap, Potter came under pressure from Trulen who made a pass stick in the third lap. In the second heat Hayden Henry showed his speed after pulling away early, setting the stage for the final later after intermission, in the very wet conditions.

Hayden Henry finished third in Open B

Jesse Leu pushed Schroeder hard in the final, but it wasn’t enough as Schroeder held on for the win. Trulen finished third ahead of Henry and Potter as the snow was falling. In the Quad GP class, Dustin Hoffman led from start to finish, ahead of Graham Eichmiller and Dj Schultz. Back on the oval, in the PeeWee motorcycle class Marshfield, WI’s Matthew Trulen just hauled on his KTM. Jumping out with the holeshot, he slowly left the race behind,

leading to the checkers. Fellow KTM rider Hayden Winkler got into second early, and ran there ahead of Trevor Simone to the end. Eli Strangfeld finished fourth ahead of Mallori Barth and Ethan Trulen. John Strangfeld looked to have been shot out of a cannon on the start of Open Pro as he had a three bike length lead around the first turn, never looking back from there. By the time he hit the finish line, it had opened further after a really good ride. Russell Bradley

Mathew Trulen ran off with the PeeWee class win. CYCLE USA, April 2013 49

ran in second just ahead of Mark Muth and Marky Will. Late in the race they were still tight, and Will slid by Muth for third. Strangfeld also won the Vet Pro class as Mark Muth and Luke Fox ran hard in second and third. Dan Wappler led from start to finish in Amateur Vet. Late in the moto he started to open up a gap after a close first couple laps. Mike Trulen and Kevin Weivoda finished 2-3 ahead of Jack Potter and Dale Funk. In the Open Pro Quad class Andy Netzel was leading all the way as they went into the last lap. Under the gun hard from Dustin Hoffman, into turn three he lost the line just a little as it looked like he may have had a problem with his machine, and Hoffman slid by for the eventual win. The error was costly for Netzel, as exiting turn four heading for the checkers he still was fighting to gain traction and Craig Melville went by as well. The Pro/Am Rubber class had two heats, and then a final after the intermission. In heat one, Mitchel Williams of Chippewa Falls led from start to finish, just ahead of a tooth and

nail battle between Dustin Dix and Kyle Krasselt. The second heat was all Scott Davis out front on his Honda, leading Andy Netzel and Jim Falke. In the final where all the riders were combined, and lined up based on the heats, Mitchel Williams answered any doubts that may have existed, takJack Potter and the ing the big win in Vet class off the line. the twelve rider class. After winning heat two, Davis finished a solid second as Dix and Netzel led Krasselt across the line. Open C ran only one moto, and Jake Graf had the right idea - get out front early. Taking the holeshot, Graf had Travis Leu, George Selinger and Cody Funk close behind through the first two laps. After that, everyone started to gap a bit, likely due to the worsening conditions. It took two starts to get the Open B class off and running right. Mitchel Rush went down hard in the first start. Under the re-start, Hayden Henry took the lead, but seemed to have visibility problems, and didn’t put up a big fight as Mitchell Leu and Jesse Leu went by for first and second

at the halfway point. Dave Wappler finished fourth ahead of Alec Muth. The Junior motorcycle class (Mini) had a good race. Noah Baehnman had his old reliable Yamaha out front until a hard wobble sent him to the ice in turn three. Ryan Mullen became the new leader, but it didn’t last long as Mason Barth was having an excellent race, and made the pass a lap later. Barth was on the gas, and from there he was uncatchable... going right to the checkered flag. Mullen finished second, just ahead of Cody and Megan Funk. The 450 Pro motorcycle class was fast as well. Luke Fox was out front early, but slid back as the rain started coming down harder. Not letting up, Jamie Hanson never slowed down as he held off Marky Will and Russell Bradley in the remaining laps. Will after the race, “The snow and rain is pretty bad out there. The actual track conditions and traction is good, its just a matter of seeing. It can be a little scary. Jamie was running good and we had a good race. Coming around some of the corners I had to let up a little with the spray, but it was a good, fun race.”

Conditions didn’t keep the enthusiastic spectators away.

Cody Funk finished third in Junior motorcycle, he also rides 250 Amateur

#24 Caleb Leschke and Diesel Plaskey leading some of the PeeWee Quad riders.

As the day came to an early end, it was really a good thing, as the roads, and freeways were pretty much shot from the now heavy snow and freezing rain. Wilson Tops Rush Lake Rush City, Minnesota - Jan. 20 By Tim McBride

S

ixteen year old Shayanna Wilson showed the guys the fast way around the track by winning two divisions during round one of the North Central Ice Racing Series held on the frozen shores of Rush Lake. The personable Cambridge High School student from Harris, MN not only displayed her riding prowess by topping the Open B and 250A classes, but her fortitude as well. Wilson crashed out of contention during the preliminary Open B heat race where Justin Ogg raced to victory and therefore securing the pole position. In the main event Wilson grabbed the lead at the start and held off a hungry pack that included Justin Leritz, Ogg, Shawn Fowler and Tyler Seiberlich, all the way to the checkered flag. The 250A class saw a repeat performance from Wilson who was followed to the checkers this time by Ryan Dean Einerwold and Dave Darsow. Only three months ago Wilson suffered a serious leg injury (a broken femur) while competing in her customary summertime discipline - motocross.

When asked about her injury as well as her race day success, the humble teenager was more concerned about the frigid race-day temperatures (which remained in the single digits throughout the day with a wind chill factor that border lined insane). “Racing motocross is a little bit easier because it’s warm and you’re toasty, Wilson explained. “Out here when you get cold you can’t feel your fingers. The brakes and the clutch are so hard to find. When you pull off the track you have to go somewhere warm because you hands are burning, and feel like they are falling off. In other racing action Jake Bostrom continues to be the benchmark to beat as he posted victories in the Open Pro class and the Dash for Cash aboard his Larsons Cycle sponsored 450 Yamaha. Second place in both divisions was awarded to Wisconsin’s Dain Olson, also aboard a 450 Yamaha. The Open Pro Quad class saw a clash of titans as quad guru Daryl Rath and Taylor Peterson went head to head. Peterson defeated Rath during the one of the preliminary heat races. Rath turned the tables and raced to victory during the main event. The Beginner C Quad class saw

#302 Mason grecula won the 85cc main event.
