D16 Schedule Changes.... With a few recent rain-outs, Arkansaw Cycle Club has added D16 points to the Sept. 7th event, and Sugar Maple will now have a points event on September 27th. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It has been a few months since I have had the time to sit down and type something up. It’s been an incredibly busy spring for many of us. Trying to get the bikes running, working events, racing, and of the course doing the proverbial household chores leaves little time for other things. The positive side of it all is that I have gotten some riding time in. District business is moving along. We are on track for membership numbers to match last years if we keep going the way we have been. We have still not seen a resurgence in our participation numbers. For those of you that are dedicated racers and riders keep working on your friends and old racers you know to get them back in the saddle. I would really like to see the participation numbers increase for the long term health of our sport. The board is working hard on promoting ourselves and our events. We need the help of all our members to recruit new members and bring back old ones. Other district business relates mainly to our recognition programs. This year will bring a few changes as there will be 4 separate programs. Each of the disciplines will be planning an event. The district will supply all of the awards and the annual Championship Publication. Each of the banquets will have to be self supporting financially. Each of the awards ceremonies may have different prices, menus and format. The MX and Quad MX awards ceremony will be held at Treasure Island Resort and Casino on January 17, of 2015. There will be a set number of tickets available and new for this year will be no walk ins. Those that wish to attend the ceremony and receive their awards will have to reserve the tickets once they become available. At this point we plan on doing everything we can to

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... keep the ticket price the same as the past several years. This is a big change but based on the attendance the past few years we have not been able to accommodate all of the walk ins. Planning these events is hard, but almost impossible when the number of attendees is unknown. For those not attending we will still have the option of shipping your awards as we have in the past. Once again we will be hosting a Road Ride this August 3 which is a Sunday. All the proceeds will go our legislative funds. Maintaining a presence at the state legislature is imperative to keeping out right to ride on the road and off the road open to us. For any of you with road bikes or street legal machines come join us. We are planning on leaving from Treasure Island Casino near Redwing. Bob’s Cycle Supply will be donating a gift card to all entrants. Grab all your riding buddies and join us. We will have another fun scenic route though Minnesota and Wisconsin . In closing I would like to wish our Minnesota D23 racers on the pro circuit the best of luck. They have been doing very well, making us proud and lets hope they can keep it going. We have a very prominent presence at the pro level in the US and in Canada. All of the hard work they put in as young racers is paying off. Congratulations of all them. See you on the tracks and trails of MN. Mike

Nuke Series Keeps Thrilling Byron, IL - June 8 By Josh Rud, More photos at shiftonephotography.com

T

he Nuke Series round four got underway on June eighth with weather being an issue all week. It was raining Friday and Saturday, but this actually turned out for the best as the track drained nicely, and made for some great tacky conditions all day long. The summer racing is in full swing and seems to be flying by. There was a great turn-out this weekend, with plenty of packed gates and action throughout the day keeping things lively for the spectators and racers alike. Right off the bat in the morning 14-24 was on the track with a great race, and

positions changing every lap. Off the gate for the first moto Arick Abraham was out front to an early lead with Jody Walker and Justin Rowntree close behind. Heading around to the third turn Rowntree went to the inside line hard to take over second. This lasted through the first lap till Walker got back into second around the finish line turn, only to get passed back by Rowntree over the tabletop. As they pushed on Walker and Rowntree swapped positions until the last lap where Rowntree caught Abraham to take over the lead with Walker holding on to third across the finish line. Rowntree won the overall after winning the second moto. Abraham took second overall and Walker third to finish off a hectic pair of motos.

first jump and passing Norred in the air for the lead. Heading down to the finish to complete the first lap Berggren tipped it over, moving Norred back to the lead with Schwagerman and Tiaga Judd in the chase. On the second to last lap Schwagerman got around Norred on the inside to take over the lead and hold it to the finish line with Judd holding down third. In the second moto Berggren was back at it taking the win but second overall due to the fourth place finish in the first moto. Schwagerman took the overall for the day with a second place finish in moto two and Norred taking third overall (2-3). Hitting the sand section at the top of the track Zamitalo took over the lead going outside as they headed down the hill. Making their way to the finish everything completely flipped as Larson had gone down and 250C winner Matthew Dziubinski made up for a bad start, and was in the lead now followed by Zamitalo and Andre Remley. The top three stayed the same the rest of the moto. Larson came back the next moto for second place, taking seventh overall after getting back up to twelfth in the first moto. Dziubinski earned the overall finishing first in the second moto as well, Zamitalo took second overall and Gomez third overall with a 43 finish. Open A was out next with some heated action as always. Memorial Weekend at Millville Millville, Minnesota - May 25/26 By Rolfe Otterness

S

pring Creek Park held the now traditional Memorial Day weekend double-header in some beautiful late spring weather. The race was well attended with about 700 entries Sunday and over 400 on Monday. Racing was intense in the various classes, with Christian Craig, Jerry Robin and other hotshoes ripping up the track in the A classes and some quick laps in B class by Henry Miller, Gavin Wilkins and Nick Schnagel. Mini bike star Austin Forkner made another appearance and ran off with Supermini and Schoolboy gold. All in all, a very competitive and fast group of competitors on hand for one of the best weekends of the year. Sunday; Rochester, Minnesota’s Henry Miller is looking nearly unbeatable in the B class this year and he was on form again as the 14-24B pack took off for their first moto. Miller surged into the lead and as the pack settled in behind him, it was Gavin Wilkins and Nick Schnagel snaring the next two positions. Miller had the advantage and pulled a bit. Wilkins was setting a fast pace of his own and Schnagel couldn’t match it. Wyat Krampitz moved up to fourth in the early part of the moto, but a crash in the sand dropped him from the race. Sam Wise inherited fourth then and held on for the duration to finish behind the top three, just ahead of Taylor Strauss. Moto two fired off and Miller sliced through turn one in the lead with Wilkins and Schnagel once again in pursuit. Miller was just too quick and gapped to about a twelve second lead before the checkered. Wilkins controlled second but Schnagel was only about two seconds back. Wise and Strauss replayed their moto one scores for the 4-5 spots. Gage Steburg made the trek up from Iowa and showed that he can handle the Spring Creek track just fine, running out front all the way in moto one of the 65cc 10-11 class. Gavin Janovsky ran a good pace for second with Conner Klemenhagen taking third over Weston Milas and Trevin Nelson. Janovsky edged out Steburg for the holeshot in moto two, but Steburg wasted little time in pursuit and shot by for the lead. Janovsky ran well to pretty much keep Steburg in sight for the remainder of the moto and Nelson battled successfully with Milas over third. Klemenhagen was next past the flag for fifth. 10

Mitch Koester with Schnagel shadowing Wilkins for the and Jerry Robin were scrapping over fourth at the end of lap one. Craig was riding in his usual super smooth, fast style, and edging away from Maier as the first few laps played out. Robin managed to finagle his way by Koester and from there on the top five positions were set. Moto two saw Craig again blast into the lead while his riding buddy Robin slotted into second. Maier and Loberg grabbed the next two positions and everyone ran fast and consistently to maintain their Ethan Miller took home order all the way to gold in Open C on Sunday.

duration. There was quite a gap back to third where Zachary Gallette circulated with Brian Neuenkirk and Collin Reinhart in pursuit. Wilkins held on all the way to lead Schnagel with about a one-second gap. Another fifteen seconds back, Gallette ran in for third. Schnagel cleverly roosted to the front to start moto two and led all the way for the moto and overall win. Wilkins stayed pretty close most of the way. Mason Persha topped a battle over third with Gallette and Zach Harris snaring the 4-5 scores. Open C was the battle of invaders as out of state riders snared the top positions. Justin Wallace from Iowa mastered the start in moto one and went on to win big. Jordan Braaten from South Dakota settled in to a strong pace early and maintained it to take second with Dawson Kaub making his drive up from Kansas worthwhile as he passed a few riders late in the moto for third. Payton Harri-

son and Blake Benson motored in for fourth and fifth. Braaten led early in the second moto, but then Wallace took over and surged away for the win. Braaten held steady for second over Kaub with a safe lead. Then Cody Barnes crossed in fourth while Benson was again fifth. It was another fantastic weekend, filled with fast racing from all the classes. As the Summer settles in, it looks to be a great time for hitting up a Spring Creek race. Red flags were the order of the day in the main as several riders had a hard time negotiating what most riders Jarod Vanderkooi made winning the Pro Twins event look easy. said was a great

track. Steve Bonsey crashed twice, once in a mix up with Brad Baker and the second time just losing the front end. Mikey Martin went down when he tucked the front wheel and then there was a problem with the starting lights that aborted a restart and caused yet another restart. Smith led from pole position at all the starts and dealt with several challengers over the twenty-five lap event. Kenny Coolbeth Jr., riding the Zanotti Racing H-D and Jared Mees, aboard his Harley came up to swap leads a few times but neither could make their moves stick. The top four riders; Smith, Coolbeth, Mees and Jake Johnson got a gap on the rest of the field in the last few laps. On the last lap Coolbeth made a move on the back straight, drafting alongside Smith and trying to get by on the outside of turn three. Coolbeth, however, slipped out the groove and lost his drive to make the pass. Smith stayed on the gas and went on to take the victory by .041 over Coolbeth. Jake Johnson, aboard a Ducati brought home the fourth place position behind Mees. Brad Baker, the only member of the factory H-D team held on for fifth in his debut ride for the team. Smith led the twenty laps in the main event with Johnson leading four and Coolbeth one. This makes four victories for Smith at Springfield, all previous wins were at the fall (Labor Day) events. The removal of the restrictor rule seems to have been a success for the H-D teams as the race was hotly contested. It would appear Smith’s talents and riding style were the deciding factor in this event. Pro Twins.... just say Wonderkooi! Gilead, OH, showed talent reserved for much older, experienced riders. At the start Vanderkooi jumped out front leading the pack by several bike lengths going into turn one. From there he stretched the lead on his Kawasaki EX650 every lap. At the checkered flag second place rider Davis Fisher and third place Jamison Minor were still in turn four. Carver HS a Real Winner Carver, Minnesota - June 9 By Keith McKenna

n the early morning hours on race day, finding the entrance to the Carver Valley Horse Ranch (home of the Hare Scrambles) was a somewhat daunting task, thanks to the very heavy levels of fog that had settled into the valley, sometimes reducing visibility to near zero. Once onto the grounds, the next task was to find a place to pit that wouldn’t have one hanging out in ankle deep water. Drivers of rear wheel drive vehicles, take heed! Hope ya’all brought your Duck Boots because getting around the sign-up area was a muddy, slippery affair. What looked in the early morning hours to surely be a repeat of last year’s soupy, messy event actually turned out to be amazing conditions for racing by the time the big class bikes would come to the line. But that meant that the Premier class and the Micro riders would be first to hit the trail. The poor Premier riders often have the tough conditions to race in, as the grass track sections are slippery from the morn-

ing dew, and the mud and water in the pot holes have not yet been roosted out, or worked down into the soil, often leaving the Premier riders and the Girls class to come home a muddy mess. Today would be no

exception, but, since even, “a rough day on a motorcycle is better than a good day in a classroom” the young guns took it all in stride. Between the dew covered grass and the water filled dips in the first section after

the start line, many racers would disappear into the woods covered in mud and shedding their goggles. The riders were cautioned to stay on the bridges that traversed the three creek crossings, even though the said bridges were decked with plywood, and a fine coating of mud and very slippery, the riders could opt for skirting around the man made structures and test their luck with the creek instead, but water depths varied greatly. Seemed that all of the riders on their 65cc and 85cc steeds chose to exercise caution in these areas. In the Premier class, #475 Devon Jerik came across the checkers, only one second ahead of the second place #100 Jack Maki, who led the race for its entirety, except for the last few meters, where Jerik picked just the right line to eek out a victory. The top two riders in class were the only ones to complete five laps, while third place racer Bailey McCarthy finished four. Running at the same time, Madison Seibenaler claimed the Girls 9-15 gold while Cora Reschke wheeled her new KTM 65 to a close second place. This was Cora’s

first race on a bike where she would have to actuate the clutch with her left hand while shifting. Undaunted, Reschke is working to continue a long and prominent off-road Reschke racing lineage in MN. In the Macro class, #455 Todd McDonald rode to the top of the leader board by riding like he was possessed by Zeus, the God of Lightning and Thunder. McDonald was the only rider to cover eight laps, while second place Ryder Haldeman would best Colin Johanns to round out the podium. Next up was the C class, on a course with rapidly improving conditions. In the Vet C wave, Matt Menke was off to a flying start, crossing the scoring loops only seconds ahead of Jeff Winters and Jason Eggert. Menke held point till the last lap where he stalled his four-stroke, only one mile before the checkered. Kicking, and all the while watching the next three riders wheel around him one by one. In the end Menke had to settle for fourth place while Greg Flohaug, Travis DeWeese and Jeff winters filled out victory circle. Mary Schreiner continued to frustrate KTM mounted Kristi Grote in the Women’s division. Always within view but just out of striking distance, Grote settled for second, after getting a mid pack start. Grote worked her way into second place, ahead of Honda mounted Kelsey Grinhaug. Miranda Tweeton fought her way up to a fourth place finish after a seventh place start. The C class to watch seemed to be the 200C. The KTMs of Devin Winter #165 and Colton Reschke #125 had a battle royal in their four lap roust-a-bout! They traded the lead numerous times throughout the one hour and thirteen minute affair, with Winter leading at the checkers. After a slow start, Alex Tweeton settled into the third place. #319 Derek Otteson had a good run in +30B, with the only hiccup coming on lap four when a little bobble saw him loose the top spot

AA eighth place finisher Dan Robin.

to hard charging Brian Rousselow. Rousselow’s lead was short lived though as Otteson again assumed point and held on till the finish. Craig Dye came in third in the sixteen rider field. There’s some serious talent that resides in the Senior A class. Today, the most serious of them all was Robert Lane on his Honda. Though he has some intense talent on a bike, ya wouldn’t know it by watching him on the track. Every time he came past me on the side of the trail you could clearly hear him bustin-a-gut, laughing out loud, drowning out the bark from his four stroke. While he is a joy to be around in the pits, ya gots to be cautious out on the track as, that dude strikes without warning! Another class favorite Ralph Feld could only manage to keep Lane in his sights, but never got to go bar-to-bar for the win. Jamie Bauer rounded out the top three. By the time the afternoon race rolled around the sun had long broken through and the temps were in the mid seventies with a light breeze. Conditions were perfect. In AA, it looked like it would be a rockem sock-em affair. By the end of the first lap the top five riders were all inside a ten second window. As the race progressed, multi time District 23 off-road champion Nate Ferderer on his GasGas #63 built a lead that the eventual second place finisher just couldn’t overcome. That finisher was none other that another multi-time champion Kyle Nelson. n the end, controversy ruled! Before that, great racing was the show at Road America’s National Park of Speed for the AMA/ DMG Subway Superbike doubleheader. The weekend started with great weather inviting all the competitors and fans to this beautiful venue for round two of the AMA Superbike season. That would change as the skies turned dark along with the racers attitudes. The fans were enjoying the day Saturday with all the different activities going on besides the races. There was the always popular Fan Walk where they can get up close with the riders along pit road, check out the machines, get autographs and souvenirs. The Jason Britain Stunt Show was going full force in the North paddock most of the weekend with several riders showing their talents of doing wheelies, brakies and burnouts of many kinds. And, of course, there is the all day job of people and bike watching, as there is a constant parade of bikes, riders, passengers and walkers moving around this great four mile track. Sitting at one of the many refreshment

due to the friendly people and good food. Always popular is the track ride, “Salute to Cycles”, that many fans join in and ride several laps around this world famous circuit. Getting to run the same course as the racers they came to watch is a big thrill for

many. For those wanting to get into the track action, there is the Briggs and Straton Motoplex where fans can rent go-karts and ride to their hearts content. On Sunday, all the same things occur for the fans and the race schedule is a copy of Saturday’s. Of course, all but the winning Superbike riders intent on improving their results from the day before. Saturday, Cameron Beaubier, last year’s Sportbike champion has made the transition to Superbike racing look easy thus far. After winning at Daytona in March and leading the points series, Beaubier charged to the front of the pack Saturday to win his first pole position. Later in the day, Cameron sped to the front again and held off his Yamaha teammate Josh Hayes for the win in the first race of this doubleheader event. After taking the lead on lap six, it looked as though Beaubier may just run off with the victory, but Hayes stayed strong and came back from a second down to close back in and retake the lead on lap eight. The rookie superbike rider, Beaubier, ran a bit wide after being passed by Hayes and fell about 1.5 seconds back. He came back on the last lap, repassing Hayes through turn one and holding on for the victory. Beaubier stated, “That was probably the best race of my career right there.” Yoshimura Suzuki rider Martin Cardenas hung with the pair of Yamaha riders as long as he could, but the pace was eventually too great for him and he dropped out of contention for the lead. Sunday’s race, Round 3 of the series, started well for Josh Hayes as he jumped out front and looked ready to regain the glory of winning. Beaubier sat behind Hayes for five laps then made a mistake

and lost the front end in turn one on lap six. He was able to remount and continue, but the opportunity to do the double this weekend was over. Martin Cardenas once again picked up the leader Hayes and stuck to him. The duo was well ahead of Cardenas’ teammate, Roger Hayden, in third and the rest of the

This time the rain came full force as a complete downpour spread across the entire facility. Hayes held on to the lead in the extremely difficult conditions, but Cardenas fell off the pace and was soon no threat. David Anthony came up to fill the second spot and Hayden settled into third. field until rain started falling in different areas of the track. Riders began signaling to officials about the rain and a red flag flew to stop the race after a few riders crashed. With strong storms sitting around the track it was a toss up by officials as to restart the race as a “wet race” or “dry race”, the difference being what tires the riders would be allowed to use. In “wet race” conditions the riders can choose slicks, intermediates or rain tires. Also, once a “wet race” is started the riders can no longer call for a stoppage due to rain. The track actually dried out during the mandatory ten minute wait during a red flag. The officials announced it to be a “wet race”, but most of the teams opted for slick tires because the track was dry and the rain tires would not hold up under the dry conditions. The super soft rubber compound disintegrates with the intense heat of dry racing conditions. The restart, with five laps remaining showed Hayes opening an early lead ahead of Cardenas, with Hayden and Chris Clark battling for third. Unfortunately, the rain returned with just over two laps remaining.

the course as the rest of the racers just tried to keep their machines upright. Chris Fillmore crashed and his bike lay in the middle of the track. That brought out the final red flag at the same time the checkered was supposed to be thrown. Leader Hayes took a red flag as his checker for the win. In winner’s circle, held in the press room due to rain, the mood was somber, no joy shown by any of the top three, even for David Anthony, for whom this was a first time podium finish. Hayes said of the last couple of laps before the red, “It was harder than the hardest lap I’ve ever ridden around this race track, just to negotiate around it.” Beside the Superbikes, the Vance and Hines Harley-Davidson race was a close fought battle as usual. Kyle Wyman came out on top over Danny Eslick and third, place local rider Benny Carlson. The all Harley XR1200 class always provides great racing and a win by Wyman was specially sweet for his Plymouth, WI based Millemium Technologies sponsor. Be sure to mark the first weekend in June next year to catch all the great racing action at Road America.

New Record at KMSR Hillclimb

F

irst and foremost all of the riders and myself would like to extend a thank you to the club and the sponsors that make the KMSR hillclimb possible. The

KMSR climb in Kewaskum, Wisconsin held at Sunburst Ski Resort is always an event to look forward to. The great club, technical hill, and huge crowd always make for a spectacular day of racing. A mid-day rain shower looked as if it would be enough to cancel the event. Luckily, it passed through, almost perfectly watering the hill for the second round. The 400cc stock class started off the day and saw Travis Faust take the win out of almost fifty riders. Garrett Graff from Germantown took the win in the slightly smaller Open Stock class. The KMSR hillclimb tends to draw in great competition in the Pro classes. The 250 Pro class kicked off the extended class racing. Early on in the class Logan Cipala slid into a smooth line up the right side of the hill and laid down a 7.943 second ride. Logan Peterson’s second round ride of 8.017 narrowly kept him out of first place. Zach DeGross stole the show in the 600 Pro class on his CR500, earning one of four seven second rides of the day. His 7.92 was good enough for the win with Logan Cipala, Logan Peterson, and Kirk Mueller following close behind. The KMSR club always make it a point that the Open class will be the best show of the day, which does not disappoint. Zach DeGross and Kirk Mueller took their low 8 second rides into third and second place, respectively. After that, Logan Cipala found a smooth line and rode his Buell 1125r to a 7.377 and new hill record. The King of the Hill saw four different leaders before it was over. Early in

340 take on Aztalan in June Lake Mills, Wisconsin- June 8 By Dave Hollub

N

ow that school is out and summer is settling into Wisconsin more and more riders are starting to fill the gates. This month many of the classes had fifteen or more riders lined up and several were approaching full gates. Despite heavy rains overnight the crew at Aztalan went to work and once again had a great track ready for the 340 entries. As the day went on the track got rough enough to challenge everyone. When the gate dropped for Sportsman B/C moto one Timmy Baake got the jump and hit the holeshot out front. Baake had a brief challenge early from Mason Persha, but once he shook Persha he sailed to an easy win. Jake Seipel had his hands full holding back Bryce Telfer. Telfer slipped into third midway through lap three and Kail McCormack and Eli Walters slipped past Seipel just before the checkers. Telfer got the second moto holeshot but Walters was out front on their first pass over the plateau. Walters stayed out front for the moto win while Baake worked his way into second on lap two. Telfer was forced out with a mechanical leaving McCormack in third with Persha fourth as the checkers flew. Baake’s 1/2 was good for the overall with Walters (5/1) second and Persha (2/4) finishing third.

The track was pretty good, it started drying up after the first set of motos. It got pretty rough and lines formed up - it was hard finding the smooth ones. I’d like to thank Tom Wolf from Sportland 2, my Mom and my Dad, Trevor Semrow from 406 Films, and Kurt Mueller from Mueller Motorsports.” Erik Utech was able to beat everyone onto the track in Open A, but Joe Dretzka was right on his rear wheel with Tyler Skodras and Jonathan Hartman close behind. Dretzka got by Utech in the barn section, then Skodras went to work on Utech and was able to take over second in the west end. Skodras began chasing Dretzka and midway through lap three he was out front. Skodras took the checkers with Dretzka and then Hartman finishing behind him. Dretzka grabbed the moto two holeshot with Maxwell Malkmus right behind. By the beginning of lap two Skodras had gotten around Malkmus, and began running down Dretzka. Skodras was able to put a wheel in on Dretzka several times, but couldn’t slip past before the checkers flew ending Skodras’ run on moto wins today at 3 (he went 1/1 in Unlimited A). Malkmus held on in third with Hartman finishing fourth. Once again Aztalan transformed through the daythis time starting muddy and developing several lines and bumps before drying out as the day went on. The riders here all were pretty happy with track conditions, and it was fun seeing the gates fill up once again. The next motocross at Aztalan is Sunday July 13 so hopefully even more riders will show up to take part in some of the district’s most exciting racing. Thanks to everyone that came out this time.

acing is in full swing in the Midwest with Joliet MX being no exception. This past weekend kicked off round three of the Arsenal Series, with everyone coming out for a great night under the lights. The stadium track has been being tweaked a lot so far this year and the night went by smooth as ever with the track fresh and ready to go. Open C was a great race of the evening with the battles going on till the last lap. Coming off the gate Juan Wonders got out to an early lead with Jacob Borge and Danny Norton both coming up from Morris Illinois, right on his back tire. Borge went wide and launched it into the rhythm section to take over the lead with Wonders and Norton now battling for second. Coming around the back tabletop Norton was able to get the inside line to get by Wonders as Mike Nechvatal joined the group, looking for a spot up front. Heading around for the final lap Nechvatal worked up to third, getting a line on the in-

side of Wonders to take over third. Norton went down, bumping Nechvatal up to second and Dontaye Bates moved into to third before the checkered flag. Borge had a great race staying up front the entire race for the win. Later +30A was on the track keeping things interesting as always. Tony Mcvey jumped out front on his Yamaha with David De Ano and Larry Bank in pursuit. The three were hot on each other’s trail when Bank went down in the corner, bumping Ray Tanguay up to third. Mcvey was on the gas and starting to walk away as the checkered flag flew giving him the win. 250B was up next with some battles ready to unfold, everyone revving on the line. The gate dropped with

Ricki Williams hauling into the first turn, grabbing the holeshot with Alec Leasure and Aj Miksys side by side hitting the straight. Leasure came out ahead with Miksys in the chase as Williams was already making a decent gap up front.

Preston Zollers won his 50cc 4-8 class.

Miksys was looking for any way around. They came through the front rhythm side by side and hit the corner before the finish line. Coming up over the finish line jump they were still bar to bar with Miksys nailing the inside rut to secure second place. Coming across the finish it was Williams in first and Miksys second. The little rippers in 65 Open were keeping things interesting tonight with tons of passing going on. Right off the line Connor Pilon shot out front with Wylie Roberts and Joe Elliot to follow. Around the first turn Roberts hit the outside to take over the lead as Talan Zollers moved into third through the first rhythm section. Zollers was on move on his KTM and as they came over the table top he went inside of Pilon to take over second. After several laps Zollers reeled in Pilon to grab the lead heading into the last lap. Roberts was trying to come back, but Zollers held him off, hitting the finish line for the final time to take the win. It was a great night out at Joliet MX with good racing as always and the track was held up very well.

he Central Illinois Motorcycle Club ran another doubleheader on June 7 and 8. The Saturday night event was cut short in the second round due to rain, but the Sunday portion ran on a tacky, fast hill. ‘Wild Wade’ Schultz and ‘Lightning Levi’ Peters claimed the Fast Time awards both days. Brodie Bennett, Levi Peters, and Matt Peters were double class winners both days. Levi claimed his wins in the 85Sr and the 200cc classes. His 3.283 second time Saturday night in 85Sr was good for that win, and also the Youth Fast Time award. Reece Hutton was second in 3.474 seconds. Levi was a bit slower on Sunday, and had to come from behind to overtake Andrew Fortner, who took the first round lead with a 3.437 second run. Levi carded a 3.343 time on his second ride to take the win, and another Fast Time award. Derick Bell was also fast with a 3.355 second time to claim second place. Levi claimed the 200cc class win both days, with times of 3.267 and 3.131 seconds. Mario Clarke was second Saturday night with Morgan Wheelwright second on Sunday. In other Youth class action, Brodie Bennett was the 65cc and 85Jr class winner both days. His 3.593 second time was the winner in the 65cc class Saturday and he followed with a 3.497 second time to win 85Jr. Lilah McGurer was second in both classes with Mitch Moran third both days in the 65cc class. Derek Valstad was third in 85Jr Saturday. Brodie posted a 3.716 second time on his first ride in the 65cc class Sunday to take that win, with Lilah again taking second. In the 85Jr, Brodie flew over the top in 3.419 seconds to not only take the class win, but post the Youth Fast Time to that point, only to see Levi slip under it in the Senior Mini class. Mitch Moran was second with a 3.773 second time with McGurer third. Matt Peters was also a double winner both days, winning the 250cc and Senior (+40) classes. Eric Wheelwright was second Saturday in the 250 class and both days in the Senior class. Dylan Brady claimed second in the 250cc class Sunday. Wheelwright also enjoyed a double win day Sunday, winning the 450cc and 600cc Four stroke classes. He also won the four stroke class Saturday night. T

he final weekend of May set the stage for the fourth round of the ATV National Championship out at Sunset Ridge MX. The professional level of ATV racing is run very unique. The series not only holds professional level races at different times throughout the day, there is also a large amount of amateur classes competing out on the same track, the same day. This makes for a fantastic experience for everyone involved, with the fans and vendors all showing up to make for a very action packed day of races. The event draws riders from all over the country, Florida to Texas, Canada and everywhere in between. There’s also a large amount of riders that make it out from our local districts. There were thirty-seven amateur classes running, making it very interesting to see all the different quads and skill levels. The amateur classes ran their first moto on Saturday along with the pro races, and then the amateur racing concluded on Sun30

day with second motos. There was plenty of the local talent out there giving everyone a run for their money this weekend. Bryan Blake out of Verona, Wisconsin was tearing up the C classes. In 450C Blake got out front with the holeshot and never looked back, sweeping both days for the overall. Blake also had a good run in Production C, taking the win in the first moto and a hard fought second in moto two to take the overall with Logan Dusenberry (OH) second overall. Open B was some great racing with Zach Kaczmarzyk out of Illinois getting out front for an early lead in the first moto with William Easley (IL) and Len Plaza (IL) falling in behind him. Heading down the hill through the hairpin Kelton Zeman (IL) took the inside to take over third. As the race

went on things kept getting shook up with Haedyn Mickelson (MN) making up ground and eventually taking over the lead, as Jeremy Ledonne (PA) was right on his pace, making the pass for second, leaving Plaza in third. In the second moto the top three were the same giving Mickelson the overall! There was a very stacked A group out there today with three different A classes; Production A, Open A, and 450A. Samuel Rowe out of Wisconsin won both motos in 450A. Rowe had a rough first moto in Open A, finishing twelfth then came back in the second moto for second place, giving him fourth overall with William Lloyd out of Virginia taking the overall (4-1). The pro races happened throughout the day. The first moto was dominated by Chad Wienen out of Galena Illinois, who came into the day as the points leader. There was a nice battle going on for second with Thomas Brown and Josh Upperman going at each other the entire race. The second moto things got interesting with Wienen getting a bad start, and Upperman getting out front for the holeshot with Brown and Jeffrey Rastrelli right behind him. The pack fell in line and started knocking out the laps as Brown started putting more and more pressure on Upperman. Coming into lap four Wienen had made his way by Rastrelli to take over third, and was

charging to the front to try and salvage a win for the day. Brown finally was able to get a run on Upperman on the last lap, taking the inside hard making a hole and gunning it out for the lead. It put Brown in for the win overall going 2-1, Wienen (1-2) was second overall with Upperman taking third (3-2). Great, competetive racing for sure! It was a great weekend of racing with the races going non-stop all day. The track crew at Sunset Ridge really kept everything going completely smooth with nothing but good things being spoken by the riders. It is a very cool event to have come through town and such a great atmosphere around the facilities. It’s not something you will find anywhere else with the pros riding right along with the amateurs, and it makes for a very special day for everyone out there. Red Bull Indianapolis GP is a Celebration of Two Wheels The Greatest Motorcycle Spectacle offers great activities for all riders, fans

O

n a rainy day more than a century ago, on a crude, crushed stone surface sprayed with tar, the era of professional racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was born. And it wasn’t cars. It was motorcycles. That storied tradition continues with the Seventh Running of the 2014 Red Bull Indianapolis GP, Aug 8-10. This incredible race weekend features the world’s best riders competing on the world’s fastest sportbikes, with speeds topping 200-mph. MotoGP is the premier class, and it features superstars like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and reigning World Champion, Marc Marquez. Also competing will be Americans Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards. They’ll be competing on exotic 1000cc prototype motorcycles from Ducati, Honda, Yamaha and more. The race is held on the IMS road course Sunday, Aug. 10, with practice Friday, Aug. 8 and practice, as well as qualifying Saturday, Aug. 9. Also on the schedule for race weekend – thrilling competition from Moto2 (600cc) and Moto3 (250cc) World Championship classes, featuring riders from around the world. But the distinctive rumble of American V-Twin thunder can also be heard and felt, as the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series returns to the famed Brickyard. Competitors will race on spec HarleyDavidson XR1200 machines, with only 32

limited modifications allowed. This formula places a premium on rider skill and creates fantastic, side-by-side, handlebarbanging action. XR1200 races will once again take place Saturday and Sunday during Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend. There’s also plenty of action off the track at IMS, both at the Speedway and around Indianapolis. Major motorcycle manufacturers and aftermarket companies will display and sell their products at the Manufacturer Display area in the IMS infield and the Vendor Marketplace in Gasoline Alley. Manufacturer representatives will be on hand to answer questions from fans interested in putting one of the beautiful new machines in their garage. Enthusiasts can see and purchase gear from top motorcycle equipment and accessory companies at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP Vendor Marketplace, as the popular display area for aftermarket products returns once again. The Vendor Marketplace will feature the largest selection of motorcycle apparel anywhere and is open throughout the entire Red Bull Indianapolis GP, Friday, Aug. 8 through Sunday, Aug. 10. For fans of rare and unique motorcycles, the Red Bull Indianapolis GP will also be hosting a custom bike show. For $25 you can enter your bike in The Pagoda Show in one of the following classes: 1949 and older; The 50’s (1950-1959); The 60’s &

The 70’s; The 80’s & The 90’s; 2000 and newer. Motorcycle magazine editors will award winners in each class and for best of show. Offer is limited to the first 200 motorcycles until August 1, and includes premium parking for the weekend near the Pagoda. For more information visit: IMS.com/pagodashow. And because the entire event is very much a celebration of motorcycling, IMS is offering riders free bike parking and free gear check inside the facility. With all the action taking place inside the track, you might find yourself looking to take a break from the intense competition. Motorcycles on Meridian is the perfect place to start. As has been the tradition each year during the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, South Meridian Street in downtown Indianapolis will be transformed into a festival of the motorcycle lifestyle on Friday evening, Aug. 8 and Saturday evening, Aug. 9. The streets will be filled with the roar of bikes as riders of all types enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow enthusiasts. Riders will gather on Meridian Street, all the way from Monument Circle to South Street to tell stories and celebrate their shared passion. Regardless of how long you’ve been riding, or what kind of bike you’re on now, the Red Bull Indianapolis GP is a motorcycling event without comparison. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss. ll week long the weather shifted from heavy thunderstorms to hot and humid making sane people question if the Aztalan Cycle Club short track would be able to run this weekend. Keep in mind, this was SANE people and not true racers questioning. Friday afternoon the clouds parted and the track crew went to work and by noon Saturday had a perfect track surface prepped. The next challenge came mid afternoon when the clouds came back and dumped more rain on the track, but remember these are racers. As soon as the rain stopped the crew went back to work and even drafted spectators to drive laps in their cars and trucks to pack the 125-250cc winner Parker Lange

Jarrett Marshall was third with Chuck Calvert fourth. As the race went on Durant never got a chance to relax as Suter stayed right on his back wheel, constantly pushing a tire in at the corners, looking for any opening to get out front. Durant crossed the finish first with Suter and then Marshall rounding out the top three. Ty Marshall got a good jump at the green light in 50cc Four Stroke and went into corner one out front with

Both Ethan Ramsey and Sydney Sund got by Marshall before the finish to claim third and fourth respectively. Super Senior was a battle between Daniel Vonmoos and Mike Yogerst from start to finish. Yogerst had the lead off the start but before they hit corner two Vonmoos powered past into the lead. Yogerst never let off and was constantly pushing a wheel in at the corners, trying to slip back out front. Yogerst looked like he pulled some extra speed on the white flag lap and going into corner three they were side by side, but coming out of corner four Vonmoos hooked up the extra traction and crossed the finish line out front Tyler Martin won Quad B. by half a bike to take the win. Daniel Vrana was out front as Vets 30+ got their green light, pushed hard by Brian Frandsen and Timothy Zeidler as they headed down the back straight. Patrick Stemper got pinched off in the start and hit the back straight in fourth, but by the time lap two was scored he had slipped past Zeidler and attached himself to Frandsen’s rear wheel. Stemper picked off Frandsen before lap two was over and began working on Vrana. VanLanger held on to the lead despite constant pressure from Kainz over the first four laps. Kainz shoved a wheel in on VanLanger every time they went through the west end of the track, and finally was able to make a pass to grab the lead. Clayton Vonmoos settled into third and was able to hold off pressure from Dj Slosser all the way to the end. In the 251-505cc class Michael Carlton and Patrick Stemper went into corner one on the start bar to bar with Carlton having the lead by the time they hit the back stretch. Kainz started out third but was able to get past Stemper on lap two. Kainz was right on Carlton’s rear fender looking for any opening to slip into the lead. Kainz saw her chance on lap four as they headed down the front straight. She took the lead and then began opening a gap for the final two laps. Carlton held on in second with Stemper and then Alexia Hoffmann close behind. Kainz, “In the Open main I rode a couple laps in second looking for a way around and finally got out front. I was able to pull a little lead to win that. Then in 505 I didn’t get quite as good start, locked some bars a little bit so I was third. I got up to second and then I was trying to find a way around. I felt like I was faster going in and coming out of the corners but just couldn’t get the drive in the corners. I just kept trying to get my wheel in there so I had the chance coming out to finish the pass. I finally was able to run the low line and get by him and got the win. I expected the track to be really rutty and tacky but it was really good tonight, you could pass almost any where. I want to thank Wiseco, Saddlemen, Spectro, Troy Lee Designs, RASE, G2 Ergonomics, The Service Pavilion, Red Line Cycles, Works Connection, and Performance Cycle and Dyno and of course my parents. I am heading to Nationals this week and hope to carry this momentum there.”

At the flash of Mike Vrana’s green light, Mees grabbed the holeshot and set sail, never missing a beat for twenty laps. Cose, Pearson, Wells, Carver, Carlisle, and Robinson ran nose-to-tail for the entire twenty laps, each trying to force the other into a mistake that never came. Mees, Cose, and Pearson each expressed their appreciation to the fans for supporting the event over the years. Quad class winners: Dave Bower, Rich Suter, and Trey Johnson When reminded that the last time he won the Dairyland (in 2012) he went on to win the Grand National Championship, Mees replied, “I feel like I did in 2012, like I can win any race I enter.” Former National Number Jesse Janisch dominated the Fuel Café 250cc Amateur Division, winning the fastest Morgan Monroe, Jesse Janisch and Chaz heat and leading Meiman topped the Amateur division every lap of the 38

Former Pro DJ Slosser won heat #2 over Morgan Monroe and Ryan Weber, while Parker Lange topped heat #3 over Jake Fell and Cody Funk. Michael Van Langer, Lexi Hoffman, and Clayton Vonmoos transferred out of semi #1 while Cody Funk, Jacob Walter, and Blake Berry survived out of semi #1. Janisch led Meiman and Monroe into turn one and never looked back. Meiman had his hands full with Monroe, who was trying her best to make the high line in turns 3-4 work. Morgan took over second briefly on the seventh lap, but Meiman stayed low to reclaim the spot. The two came across the stripe nearly side-by-side at the finish, with Meiman topping Monroe.

Terry Vestal topped Steve Kasten and Dan Vrana in the Al Muth Memorial/ West Bend HD Vintage final. Dan Lauters topped Kasten, Louie Lauters, and Mark Martinich in heat #1 while Vrana topped Vestal, Mike Yogerst, and Scott Johnson in heat #2. Vestal and Vrana tangled at the start of the final, but Vestal kept the throttle pinned on his XLR and captured the lead in turn one. Vrana held second until the last lap, when Kasten motored around to take the runner-up spot. In the Cedar Creek Motorsports Quad Division, Dave Bower and Rich Suter claimed the two heat race wins over Trey Johnson and Chuck Calvert, and Brett Durant and George McBride, respectively. Suter grabbed the

holeshot in the final and pulled away for his first ever Dairyland victory. Johnson had his hands full with Bower the en-

ust like the month before, riders came from all over the midwest to compete in the second round of the Hare Scramble series at Fox Valley Off-Road. Weather was difficult all week, but cleared up for this Sunday's event. Every race at FVOR is run opposite from the previous one to give the riders a different feel on the same property. This event was run in the more technical clockwise rotation. Rock creek, which some hate or love depending of their skills, is particularly ornery as riders have to turn hard ninety degree turns out of the deep creek banks. It is limited in the smaller age groups and morning big bike classes, but the AA and afternoon classes get the full extent of the fun. Women’s class this year has been solid with 14-17 riders per event. Coming out of semi-retirement was Nikki Dixon who you all know as a writer and racer from mx to now a mama and woods rider. RCR's Kim Chandler was on hand and one of the favorites to win. Woodstock KTM's Gretchen Orme limping about with a badly sprained ankle, put in a valiant attempt but really should have been a spectator on this day. The big surprise is Autumn Torres who has been in the battles for a while, but never "shining" at the end. Today was different, Autumn rode a flawless race. Nikki rode a solid race and finished second while Katie Parker rode well for third. Colten Zuidema (265) is the kid to beat this year in Super Mini. As Zuidema led, Brenden Lawrenz along with Robert Bland battled with RCR's Garrett Ward early in the race. Somewhere on lap four Ward took a log wrong, taking himself out of contention. Lawrenz and Bland battle hard til Bland hiccupped in the crossing part of rock creek letting, Lawrenz get away and out of site. The bigger story of the day was 117 riders in the morning big bike race. Who would have ever thought there would be twentyeight +50 riders. Then go on with thirty-five

+30C class riders, and thirty-four in Open C, with a solid group of twenty in little C. This made for very non-stop competition all morning long. The track has more single track in this direction so every pass was earned, and the hills made them work even more. Steve Bland got one of his patented holeshots, with Tom Robinson and DJ Ryan hot on his heals. Bland rocketed off as Ryan and Robinson both had mechanical issues, but in the +50A class there is always someone to pick up the pace and push the leader. The new "young" guys in the class are riding well, like Greg Gourly, and Greg Birkland, with Tom Burtle in there as well! Out of all

many as eight rider battles were seen all morning. Colten Zuidema and Jacob Mccarrens had a great battle for top honors in 200C, better known as little C. The finish line log section was fun to watch as they did it side by side. Some where in the back section Zuidema got by Mccarrens and never looked back. These two kids have been racing for years, and they both ended up top ten overall as well as the Open C winner Casey Shatters. While these guys were doing battle the 65 beginners and 50cc classes were running on the middle section of the property. Nice to see such large numbers in these two classes as the sport draws it's future from them. Fifteen 65's and twenty 50cc riders made for a great morning of racing. The new 40 minute format for the 65's helps them with the longer races they will encounter as they move up. The little man of the morning was Elijah Berryman, his last place start and charge to the front was epic. Nathan Young came through in the lead on the first lap and was looking solid but pressure was mounting as the duo of Jhak Walker and Lake Plowman kept pushing him. Lap five, Plowman took over the lead when Young toppled over on the kids mx track area. Berryman at this time was about mid pack and still charging. The last couple of laps Berryman got by a couple more riders and took a well earned third. Walker also getting by Young late in the race took second. Young fourth and Conner Pilon took some time off from mx rac#24 Ryan Moss and Matt Dissell battle in AA. ing to finish fifth. Moss got by Dissell, then took a bad line in rock creek and Dissell out horsepowered him up the hill and moved into second. This with 1.5 laps to go. Ward got his ride fired up and moving then ran down Moss, then Dissell with only half a lap left, taking over second behind Vance. Speaking of riding well, Alec Perry put in a very solid ride on his ole Yamaha to finish fifth. One thing all these riders will find out soon enough, is that a little hot rod is coming. Mason Schuhler, (338) on a clapped out 125 Suzuki (sorry dad it's been beat), came from the little B line, the last line, for fifth overall. The only riders to stay ahead of him were those top four AA riders. Quad classes were solid again this race, nineteen riders with Brian Wittersheim pulling double duty racing bikes, then quads for a hard day of racing. He won the +30 Quad class and actually having to race Paul 42

Mataya, McGrew master Cambridge In the Quad division Brock Zychowski pulled the double by winning the Open A main event and the Open Pro-Am final as well. Ryan Bruggeman and Jordan Lokken filled the podium on both occasions.

Nick Mataya #12L won the Open Semi-Pro class. #10L Mac McGrew won the 450 Semi-Pro class earlier in the program.

Cambridge, Minnesota - June 6 By Tim McBride

D

istrict 23 Pro Singles contenders Nick Mataya and Mac McGrew split victories in the Pro classes during the first round of the North Central Dirt Track racing season. The event itself was in jeopardy from the start as heavy rains left the ¼ mile circuit in a muddy mess. Through the efforts of Kurt Boehlke, Adam Schmidt and a host of Minnesota dirt track family volunteers, the seemingly unrideable quagmire was transformed into a delightfully tacky, multilined surface. The 450 Semi-Pro heat race was won by Mataya with Cole Fealy and McGrew in tow. But when the starting flag flew for the main event everyone knew McGrew was the man to beat, as he sped to victory with Andrew Hook placing a legit second place ahead of Mataya, Fealy, Cale Langland, Rich Delak and Craig Dye. The Open Pro Heat saw a repeat win for Mataya ahead of Fealy, McGrew, Hook and Langland. In the main event Mataya

jetted to the front and held the position while heavily contested by McGrew throughout the race. Hook finished third on the podium with Fealy and Langland in tow. Afterwards the Go-Moto sponsored Mataya shared his thoughts, “I was pole putting” Mataya laughed. “I was sand bagging going into one so I could get out where I wanted to be coming out of two, I was trying not to make a mistake, my arms got tired and I got a little bit of arm pump. After Springfield (last week) my hands hurt so badly that Cole Anderson came over and started massaging them. I’m starting to get into shaped though.” The M3 Racing sponsored McGrew also admitted he got a little tired at the end as well. “I saw the halfway flag I thought I really have to pull something out. In the first race (450 Semi-Pro) I was not going on the gas so much and that helped a lot. You couldn’t set your own pace and I was trying too hard behind Nick (in the second race) to make up for it.

Even one day is worth the trip Crystal Falls, Michigan - May 31 By Cody Wills

T

he Crystal Falls season opener came a bit later this year with hopes of warmer weather than last year’s, where we saw snow. It was… well the opposite this year, the sun was out and it was set to be in the upper 80’s. The weekend was forecasted for a nice warm two days of racing and the Valley Raceway crew had prepped the track the best it has ever been. Early race day action came from the 50Jr class, which had a pretty nice turnout. Deegan Vanvreede got out front early in moto one, getting quite a challenge from Team 2 rider Kane Kalies. The two would battle it out would then put time on the field. Johnny much of the moto before Vanvreede beat Vanezande had good rides, going 2-4 for secKalies at the finish line. Moto two looked to be the same as Ahola grabbed the early lead with Sayles in second. It didn’t take but a lap for Sayles to move into the lead. Childers had a better start but lost touch just a little bit with the front two. He locked down third as Aaron Gurchinoff pick up fourth this moto, bettering his fifth in moto one for fourth overall. “A” class was dominated by Adam Reek. He didn’t’ holeshot and walk away though. Boaz Blitzes Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - June 8 By Rolfe Otterness

J

osh Boaz was running strong at the latest edition of the Spring Creek Super Series, taking six moto wins to snare the overall in 85cc 12-15, 85cc 9-12 and Supermini. Jerry Robin had three overalls as well, but had to split wins in a couple of classes with Christian Craig. The track was prepped as well as usual and in good condition considering the rainy weather that has been plaguing the area. Saturday’s rains in the metro area scared off some potential riders, but still there were over 400 entries. Luke Hempen shot his bike into the lead as the Schoolboy class was let loose for moto one. Ben Adamson has been running strong all year and he was able to slip by before the end of the first lap. Adamson started to edge away from Hempen who was forced to deal with a challenge from Mateo Johnson. Austin Nelson was holding fourth while Kole Lemcke and Justin Evans dueled for fifth. On the last lap Johnson slipped up and stalled out at the bottom of the big hill, dropping back and letting Hempen get away. The order at the flag; Adamson, Hempen, Johnson, Nelson and Lemcke.

Adamson gated better and led through turn one in the second moto. Hempen and Johnson set off in pursuit and both riders ran strong to stay fairly close. While these three ran out front, there was a tussle over fourth with Evans, Lemcke, Adam Volkmann and Nelson involved. On the white flag lap, Hempen put on a surge and closed in a bit on Adamson, only to come up short at the flag. Fourth went to Volkmann over Nelson. Mccrae Hagarty came flying out to lead the 65cc 7-11 class around turn one, but Trevor Nelson assumed control shortly into the race with Conner Klemenhagen and Cameron Skaalerud also getting by Hagarty early on. Nelson was looking strong and went in for the win. Klemenhagen followed him in with Skaalerud trailing. David Sunken nipped Tyler Vanatta on the last lap to tie up fourth while Hagerty didn’t finish. Nelson holeshotted moto two but Klemenhagen was on the gas and soon took over the lead. Skaalerud dropped his bike about halfway through the race and lost a bunch of time. At the flag Klemenhagen took the win with a big edge over Skaalerud. Sunken claimed third over Nelson and Hagarty. Jerry Robin roosts out of a berm at the bottom of Collarbone Hill.

CYCLE USA, July 2014

Brent Mason (281) just edges out Zach Ehmke (29) at the start of +25.

Blaze Best stormed off the gate to lead the 250B pack with Mateo Johnson and Collin Reinhart running 2-3. Best was looking pretty strong as he proceeded to build his lead on this KTM 250, pulling a solid five second lead in a few laps. Johnson had a pretty good gap of his own over Reinhart and they ran in to the finish in that order. Isaiah Reidel took fourth with Cody Carlson fifth. Best definitely had his starts down and charged out into the lead in moto two. Johnson again set into pursuit and managed to keep Best from gapping him too much. Reidel, sitting in third couldn’t quite match their pace but found himself safe from challenges late in the moto with Marc Buhl and Carlson disputing the fourth place all the way to the end. Best took the win. Christian Craig surged into the lead in 14-24A with Jerry Robin chasing him around the track. That would be the story for moto one as Craig maintained his edge all the way to the checkers. Joe Perron had a good ride for third as Blake Raskovich and Nathan Kohnke motored by the flag to fill the top five. Craig jumped out front again in moto two with Robin again giving chase, and Perron in third. About mid moto Craig had a bobble and Robin took advantage to spring into the lead. Craig resumed operation in second but Robin had grabbed enough of an edge to lead to the finish. Perron, Raskovich and Nick Jackson filled out the top five this time.

S

unday was round three of the Fly Racing Showdown series was full of fun things to do and see. With Monday being a ride day there were riders from all over the midwest to tackle the Bomber track. With it being the FLY event, James Povolny was on hand with the FLY rig showcasing all the cool products. Povolny wins. That is something that many have read about over the years with James Povolny cutting his teeth on the way to being a pro in the region. This time, it was his son Eli Povolny. In the 50Sr class Eli had his hands full with KTM rider Mayson Byrnes who took the first moto win. Eli took his KTM to second with Jeremy Frailey

third. In the second moto Eli had things under control and took the moto and overall win. Behind him, things were all mixed up. Cobra rider Caleb House took second but his sixth in the first moto left him fourth overall. Third for the moto went to KTM rider Landon Mccombs and mated to his fourth in the first moto gave him second overall. Third overall went to Frailey who finished the moto fourth. Fifth went to first moto winner Byrnes who finished eighth the second moto. In 50cc 4-8 Eli Povolny took both moto wins and the overall. Second both motos went to Briley Viviano, ahead of Maddox Wilson. The 65Jr class had KTM rider Caiden Gerling on the gas! In the first moto Gerling took the win with KTM rider

Preston second. Kawasaki rider James Povolny rode well and earned himself third for the moto. When the gate dropped for the second moto Gerling again found himself out front and he was trucking. He wasn’t about to give up this moto win, taking the moto and overall. Povolny improved his first moto score with a second for the moto and overall. KTM rider Clayton Anderson also improved his moto score by one, for third in the moto and overall. Wow, fast kids but what

about dad? James Povolny (Sr) took on the +25 and Open A classes. In +25, he showed he still has some of that National level skill. In the first moto Povolny took the win. Honda rider Michael Akaydin was second and Ryan Tracy third. In the second moto it was more of the same as Povolny took the win. The Open A class had some great battles. In the first moto Honda rider Blake Copeland was a rocket out front. Theodore Pauli hounded Copeland, eventually making an aggressive pass for the lead and moto win. Copeland finished second and Woodstock KTM’s Povolny third. In the second moto Copeland again was on a roll but had trouble leaving him fourth for the moto and overall. Up front Pauli was again setting the fastest lap times of the day. The true battle was between Michael Akaydin and Povolny. Akaydin finished second for the moto with Povolny third giving them a tie for the overall. With the second moto tiebreaker Akaydin finished second overall.

Also, on Sunday, Thompson’s Motorsports had the Jason Raines Yamaha Demo Program at LTM. With this you get to ride any of the new 2014 bikes, ranging from the TTR50 to the new YZF450. What a great deal and there was a line all day for the blue bikes to hit the track for a test ride. Jason Raines is a six time AMA National Hare Scrambles champion and a former factory Yamaha rider. Asked about the program, he said “this is the fourth year for the program we have done many demo rides. The program is open to all age riders and we encourage first time riders. Right now our number one group is the 5 to 15 year olds, which is good news for our sport. Our number one bike asked to ride is the YZF250 followed by the twostrokes. Pro/450B race. The finish order at the checkered was Craig, Robin, Orres and Simons. Watching the big guys from the pits was another big winner of the night, Kaleb Carman of Rochester, MN. Carman raced in the Open 80-105cc class and the 85cc 12-15 class, taking the win in all four of his gate drops. In the 85cc 12-15 class Carman raced against Ben Bernal, Nick Vaidich, Caleb Melstrom, Ray Oehlerking, Eric Molnau, Mitchell Dalheimer, Jacob Mertens, Jake Johnson, and Alex Damlow. In the main event, Carman quickly took the lead and held a comfortable distance from the pack during the entire race. The 85cc 7-11 race was double dropped with the 12-15 class; and by the second lap 85cc 7-11 racer Austin Kristiansen of Le Center, MN, was already making his way into the older kids pack. The running

t was a hot, sunny day, something rare this race season. The track was in great shape, moist and tacky, even after a four hour open practice in the morning. The Motokazie crew worked hard to keep the track in mint condition, and about 150 entries turned out for the Saturday night Jordan Supercross race, round four of the eighteen race Motokazie Supercross Series. Included in that number was fifteen pit bike racers getting their training in for the big July 11th full supercross, two moto race. The infamous Jerry Robin of Hamel, Minnesota made an appearance to race against his training partner Christian Craig of Plymouth, MN. Robin is training for Loretta Lynn’s, qualifying in 450A and Open Pro Sport; and Craig is training for his return to outdoor nationals. In the Pro class main event start, it was Robin then Craig off the line, followed by Ryan Orres of Hastings, and Taylor Simons of Iowa Falls, IA. The start at Jordan is straight out about three hundred feet into a tight right hand turn with a very tall berm. The four riders entered the berm at about the same time with Craig and Robin getting a little close and a squirrely. Craig came out first with the throttle wide open, head and chest over the front bars, working to keep that bike moving forward. After the first turn is a left hand turn into a double triple combo in front of the grandstands. Over the triple, only twenty feet in the air, Craig looked over his left shoulder to see just how close Robin was. Next is a left turn into the back full turn berm then over the catapult jump. Craig did a sick scrub over the catapult, extending his distance in front of Robin and the pack. The first lap set the trend for the remaining seven laps of the The fastest two riders on the track tonight.

order of the first lap was: Carman, Damlow, Johnson, Mertens, Dalheimer, Molnau, Oehlerking, Melstrom. 7-11 riders Ethan Wilkes, Riley Renner, Nolyn Hempel and Cole Busch. By the last lap there, really wasn’t much change to the finish order, with the exception of Kristiansen moving into the middle of the 1215 pack. Kristiansen was returning from an injury and proved he has not lost any speed or determination. Motokazie would like to thank their sponsors: Ziegler Cat, Minnesota National Guard, 401 Manufacturing, Strider bikes, Coates RV and Ace Trailer Sales. All Kamm at Pine Ridge Pro-Am Athelstane, Wisconsin - May 25 By Cody Wills

T

he Southeast Sales Spring Classic Pro-Am is becoming a popular annual event for the crew at the Pine Ridge Raceway. The track had an open practice the day before the event, which normally is only for the Pro Am riders. This year they opened it up to the everyone, creating a great weekend for all the riders to enjoy. It was an excellent weekend weather wise, and the turn-out was large. It was time to watch the top riders in the midwest to do battle. Cody Williams was the man to beat in the Pro Am classes. In the first 250A moto Williams grabbed an impossible holeshot from the far outside, when 90% of the holeshots come from the far inside. As Williams held it wide open around the outside Kody Kamm snuck around the inside and into second. Quickly, Vaughn Mays worked his Southeast Sales KTM250 into third. As the battle out front waged on between Williams and Kamm, Mays kept his distant third throughout the moto. The man on the move was the ever fast Joey Dalzell. Trying to recover from a poor start, he made his way up to fifth, but was easily running the pace of the front two. Kamm at times would reel in Williams, but just about every time that happened Williams would twist the throttle just a little more and open it back up again. The moto ended with that order as Philip Maus quietly stayed in fourth just ahead of Dalzell. Moto two had Dalzell out front quick with Kamm close. Williams was nowhere

A good crowd came out for the day of racing.

to be found in the top fifteen. He then went down on lap two, and with this crew of riders that was handing the win away. Out front, Dalzell put on a show in front of Kamm, two guys who have qualified for pro nationals multiple times. Kamm, who may have been riding for the overall lost some time on Dalzell as the moto went on. Mays again held strong in third. Ty Tyrrell, a usual front runner had made his way to fourth after a bad first moto, and late moto battle with local Adam Reek. Dalzell cruised to the win picking up second overall with 5-1 score. Kamm took his 2-2 with a smile because it landed him the overall. Mays consistent 3-3 got him third and Williams would fight back to sixth after his early fall, for fourth overall. The first moto of 450A seemed like a repeat of the 250A first moto, Williams grabbed the most unlikely holeshot from

the outside and Kamm snuck around the inside. Williams on his YZ450F checked out from there. Brandon Pope and Ty Tyrrell made it tough for Kamm early, but eventually he found his groove and locked the spot in. As Tyrrell settled into third over Pope, locals Jake Vaness and Dustin Pulley finished fifth and sixth. Pulley had worked his way to the top six after a poor start. Vaness was the man to beat at Pine Ridge two weeks ago and this just shows the talent the pro-am brings to this event. In 450A moto two Kamm got out front as Williams had a bad start. Tyrrell and Pulley had to fight it out between the two of them for second as Kamm checked out. Kamm’s domination was impressive, but people couldn’t keep their eyes off Williams, who at one point was outside the top fifteen. By lap four he had broken the top ten. He would eventually catch Taylor Skodras who CYCLE USA, July 2014

was having his best moto of the weekend, running fourth and on the last lap Williams made the pass. That 1-4 finish was enough to give Williams second overall. Pulley would duke it out for second and finish there, giving him fourth overall while Tyrrell picked up another third for third overall. Kamm got his only moto win of the day which didn’t seem to matter as he would win both overalls in the Pro-Am classes. The practice the day before was a huge hit and set a good example for tracks in Wisconsin to look to. The Pine Ridge crew started the weekend well and ran a smooth show till the end. The track stayed together well for the 400 plus entries.

MC Motopark Regional Mt Carroll, Illinois - June 14 By Josh Rud, More photos at www.shiftonephotography.com

T

his past weekend MC Motopark hosted the North Central Amateur Regional, drawing riders from all around the Midwest, and a handful of riders from California all the way to Connecticut. The pressure was on with this being everyone’s last chance at getting a ticket to the “big show” at Loretta Lynn Ranch. There were eighteen classes racing the two day event, the first day turned

in twenty-eight motos. There was eleven classes that had more than forty riders registered, so they ran two divisions in those classes with a LCQ at the end of the day one to determine who went on to last two motos on Sunday. There was certainly a lot of nerves out there with only the top eight in a class advancing, not only do you need to ride three solid motos, you need to keep your bike in top shape the entire weekend. Practice started on Thursday with a timed practice on Friday, it was a long weekend out at MC Motopark. The crew was going non-stop with forty gate motos shredding the track all day, and they kept everything great all weekend. The A class was packed with several midwest riders making it through. Jerry Robin out of Minnesota, known well for winning the 2 stroke class last year after qual-

ifying on a 1985 Honda, took third overall in 450A. Robin also won Open Pro Sport for the weekend with Cody Williams (WI) making it through in sixth place and Cody Vanbuskirk (IL) grabbing seventh overall. Vanbuskirk also grabbed a second ticket to the big event, finishing fourth overall in 250A. The B class was just as stacked this weekend with everyone putting in their best to get through. 250B was a Minnesota kind of day with three riders taking home tickets. Henry Miller took second with Gavin Wilkins taking fifth and Sam Wise in sixth. Jamison Duclos (WI) on his Rock River Yamaha also made it through, finishing up seventh overall. In 450B Limited, Miller came through again riding hard for third overall and Wise was up there also, in fifth. Duclos had some bad luck in the last moto putting in him in ninth. In College B/C Wisconsin’s Sportland 2 rider Justin Wolf put the throttle down and pulled out a sixth overall after a great weekend of riding. Then in TwoStroke B/C, Blaze Best out of Orono, Minnesota was out there dominating all day, taking home third overall.

C class had several Illinois riders making it through as well, in 250C Chad Saultz and Ian Pistole made it through with Saultz taking second and Pistole in seventh, having a great third place finish in the first moto. The vet riders where out today making it look easy, in Senior +45 Tim Filippi out of Rock Falls, Illinois took home the overall, followed by Tim Bartylla (MN) and Greg Gerulis (MN). Michael Westbrook (IL) also made it through in eighth place. In Masters +50 Bartylla was the man with the overall. In Vet B/C +30 Jiri Brabenec coming out of Illinois took the overall with Stanislau Bachman (IL) qualifying. Brabenec made a repeat appearance in Vet +35, taking sixth overall with Eric Horcher out of Palatine, Illinois in fourth. Horcher took home second overall in Senior +40 with the addition of Howard Jabaay (IL) third and Alex Kruth snagging eight overall to finish out the weekend. Then in Junior +25 Justin Kelly out of Illinois put in some good motos for third overall. Everyone had a great time out at MC Motopark with tons of stuff going on around the facilities giving everyone plenty of time to unwind through the four day stay. A really cool rope swing in one of the ponds at the back of the track kept everyone cool and a really killer waterslide setup had people busy all weekend. The track was in top shape all weekend

he Rock River Riders ran their first hill climb of 2014, with familiar riders coming out on top. Wade Schultz was a double class winner as well as setting the two fastest times of the day. Chad Altfillisch was also a double class winner while Mike Pulver was a triple winner. ‘Little’ Andy Fortner was the fastest of the Youth riders. Schultz set the fast time of the day in the Open class with a blazing 3.849 second time on his big and bad Suzuki for that class win, the only rider to turn in a sub four second ride to that point all day. He brought the big bike back in the Senior (+40) class and came from behind to overtake Andy Fortner who had taken the first round lead with a 4.171 second time on his CR500. Wade Schultz and Andy Fortner, the Fast Time winners. Schultz broke the four second bartake the class win. Adam Keeler was nearly rier again on his second ride with a 3.898 as fast with a 4.376 second run on his KTM second class winner. Fortner was close to claim second. Wheelright was also faster with a 3.981 time on his second ride, the on his second run, but his 4.396 run was only other rider to post a sub four second good only for third. Eric did claim the run. 250cc class win, however, with Altfillisch Chad Altfillisch was in fourth place in second. the 450cc class at the end of the first round, Altfillisch brought his Honda back in the with Eric Wheelwright sitting on the lead 600cc four stroke class and took the first with a 4.483 second time on his KTM. Bur round lead, only to see five different riders Chad turned in an excellent 4.336 second beat that time in the second round, with time on his Honda on his second ride to Cody Jenner running strongest with a 4.250 time on his Kawasaki. But Chad was up to the challenge and flew over the top on his second ride in an outstanding 4.124 seconds to take the class win, as well as setting the fast time of the day to that point. Jenner stayed in second with Kirk Gorsuch just a tick behind him. Jenner did get a win with a very good 4.212 second time in the 600cc class, with Fortner close behind him in 4.273 seconds and Schultz third. Mike Pulver started his win streak in the Super Senior (+50) class with a nice 4.344 second time on his Honda, ahead of Jeff Jack in second (4.508) on his KTM and Pat Sarver. Pulver posted a 4.533 second first round time on his KX250 which held up for the 400cc Stock class win, with Troy Camerer second on his Suzuki, only 5 thousandths of a second slower Emily Schultz won the Women’s class.

Pulver was a convincing winner in the Open Stock class with a 4.674 second time on his CR500, with Paul Hackbarth second in 5.078 seconds and Steve Bell third. In Youth class action, only five riders made it over the top, all of them in the 85Sr class. Little Andy Fortner found himself in sixth place at the end of the first round with a crash at 149 feet, with Gage Stear in the lead with a 5.736 second time. Fortner kept his CR85 under control on his second run, however, and topped the hill in 5.240 seconds for the win, and the Youth Fast Time. Stear’s first round time held up for second with Kane Ulve claiming third in 6.02 seconds. In other Youth action, Zack Johnson was the 50cc class winner ahead of Gavin Kramer and Creedenze Standard. Mitch Moran was the best of the 65cc class with Kane Ulve and Zack Johnson in second and third. Jaydn Aliprandini claimed the 85Jr win with Mitch Moran second and Aldan Millas third.
