erry Robin and Christian Craig rocketed around the Spring Creek track to top the season opening motos in the 250A, 14-24 and Open A divisions. Robin is well on the way to recuperating from a broken collarbone, and semi-retired Christian Craig, after adjusting to the Minnesota climate, showed he still has pro-level skills. Out of the other 500 or so entries, standout performances were produced by Henry Miller as he topped eight motos in the B classes, Austin Forkner dominating in the Schoolboy and Superminis, and Josh Boaz rounding up the gold in the 85cc classes. There was plenty of other good race action as riders were eager to hit the dirt after a long winter. It was a great day, and the Spring Creek track was even throwing up dust later in the day. The 250A class is always competitive, and this was to be the premier ride for the well known Jerry Robin, and that provided an extra surge of interest in spectators. Luke Peters pulled a masterful holeshot on his two stroke Yammie, but Robin took over shortly through the first lap. Joe Perron also was on the move and displaced Peters before the end of the lap. Peters then got involved in a tussle with Clay

again grabbed the initial lead in the second moto with a nice holeshot, but Robin soon pounced as he quickly dispatched Peters from the front and began to build a margin. Peters held on to second for a couple of laps, but Chapiewski was on his tail and soon took over that position. ond as Robin took the win about six seconds clear of the best of the rest. Chapiewski, Riehm and Spencer Henrickson wound up rounding out the top five. The Supermini class featured the very quick Missouran, Austin Forkner, who quickly established a lead as moto one was fired off the gate. Another rider from Missouri was also running a hot pace as Lance Kobusch settled into second for the duration. Homeboy Josh Boaz rode well but was not up to pace with the two leaders. Aaron Boatman held on for fourth over Seth Doberlein. Moto two played out with much the same story-line, Forkner dominant in the lead to take the win with a big gap over Kobusch. Boaz once again took third with Doberlein trading places with Boatman after a long battle. Kyle Lawler jumped off the line to lead the 250C division into battle, and rounded turn one ahead of Travis Bartylla and Tanner Hatch. Lawler held on to the lead for the first lap and a half with Bartylla applying a ton of pressure. Then Bartylla got a good drive up the pro hill and cut by Lawler to take position at the head of the pack. From then on Bartylla held off any charge that Lawler could throw at him, going on to take the win with about a bike length lead. Hatch took third over Jordan Braaten and Keegan Kleinwotterink. Moto two featured Hatch blasting out a nice holeshot but Lawler took over the lead near the end of lap one. Hatch held on to second for another lap with Bartylla working his way up and passing for second over the tabletop as they started around for lap three, cutting to the inside when Hatch drifted too far out. Bartylla poured it on and closed on Lawler, getting near enough to try a last lap â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hail Maryâ&#x20AC;? type pass attempt which ended in a crash, and a close second place. Hatch was third once again while Seth Fischer and Kleinwotterink snared fourth and fifth. he road to Loretta Lynn’s has been being paved for the past couple months, with the last of the qualifying happening this past weekend at Motosports Park in Byron IL. This was the last chance for riders who haven’t qualified for regionals to get their ticket to move on to the next stage of competition. Getting to the highest level of amateur competition is a long path with people coming from across the country, even Canada to get their last shot at making it. The track this weekend was in amazing shape, track owner Aaron Vincer told me they started watering the track on Wednesday to get ready for the double header weekend, spanning thirty-six classes. All the classes were packed and everything went smoothly as the facilities handled the event without any issues. With SuperMini 2 on the line the day of great battles began. In the first moto Camron Mitchell out of Georgia took the win followed by Devin Stang and Eddie Norred JR. The second moto switched everything up off the line, Mitchell came in hard for the holeshot with Stang and Zach Tatar close behind. Coming down the hill to complete the first lap Illinois’

Flying down the hill towards the finish line Krisch moved into the lead and ran out of room in the last corner with a lapped rider in the inside rut allowing Parmley to rail it outside Crystal Lake’s Alex Larson in 450C.

What a great day of racing out at Motosports Park with so many riders out to claim their prize and move onto the regionals starting up in June. Red Bull Indianapolis GP is a Celebration of Two Wheels The Greatest Motorcycle Spectacle offers great activities for all riders, fans

n a rainy day more than a century ago, on a crude, crushed stone surface sprayed with tar, the era of professional racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was born. And it wasn’t cars. It was motorcycles. That storied tradition continues with the Seventh Running of the 2014 Red Bull Indianapolis GP, Aug 8-10. This incredible race weekend features the world’s best riders competing on the world’s fastest sportbikes, with speeds topping 200-mph. MotoGP is the premier class, and it features superstars like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and reigning World Champion, Marc Marquez. Also competing will be Americans Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards. They’ll be competing on exotic 1000cc prototype motorcycles from Ducati, Honda, Yamaha and more. The race is held on the IMS road course Sunday, Aug. 10, with practice Friday, Aug. 8 and practice, as well as qualifying Saturday, Aug. 9. Also on the schedule for race weekend – thrilling competition from Moto2 (600cc) and Moto3 (250cc) World Championship classes, featuring riders from around the world. But the distinctive rumble of American V-Twin thunder can also be heard and felt, as the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series returns to the famed Brickyard. Competitors will race on spec HarleyDavidson XR1200 machines, with only limited modifications allowed. This formula places a premium on rider skill and creates fantastic, side-by-side, handlebarbanging action. XR1200 races will once again take place Saturday and Sunday during Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend. There’s also plenty of action off the track at IMS, both at the Speedway and around Indianapolis. he Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders opened the 2014 hillclimb season at their club grounds near White City, Illinois, and Kirk Gorsuch was the Overall Fast Time winner. Steve Kuhl was a double class winner, and Mike Pulver was a triple winner. Kuhl from Panama, Illinois, took his first win in the 450cc class on his KX450 with a 4.274 second time, barely beating Gorsuch who carded a 4.291. Kuhl edged Gorsuch again in the 600cc class, taking the win with a 4.385 second time on his KX500, just ahead of Gorsuch

who topped out in 4.411 seconds on his CR500. Matt Peters claimed third in both classes. Things didn’t look so good for Gorsuch in the four stroke class, as he crashed at 105 feet on his first ride and Kuhl posted a 4.204 second run for the class lead. But the twenty-three year old Gorsuch, from Stillman Valley, Illinois, kept his KX450 under control on his second run and flew over the top in 4.070 seconds to take the win and the Fast Time award away from Kuhl. Peters, once again, claimed third place. Veteran rider Mike Pulver claimed wins in the Super Senior, 400 Stock and Open Stock classes. His 5.055 second run on

his CR500 was good for the Super Senior class win, with Brent Land second on his CB750. Riding a KX250, Pulver carded a 4.886 second winning time in the 400 Stock class with Troy Camerer claiming second. The 50 year old Pulver, from Lizton, Indiana, took his third win on a CR500 in the Open Stock class, with Steve Bell second. Pulver came very close to a four win night, but fell short to Matt Peters in the Senior (+40) class. Peters claimed the win on his KTM in 4.273 seconds. In Youth class action, 7 year old brothers Kolton and Kaleb Lowry, from Gillespie, Illinois, placed first and second in the 50cc class with rides of 46 and 45 feet on their PW50’s. Brodie Bennett rode his KTM65 to the 65cc class win with a 110 foot effort, with William Carlile second on his KX65 with rides of 98 and 80 feet. Mitch Moran was third with rides of 98 and 61 feet. When riders tie on their best rides, their final placement is decided by their second rides. ‘Jumpin Jaydn’ Aliprandini was the only rider in the 85Jr class to stop the clock, with a 7.219 second time to claim the win for the nine year old rider from Bloomington, IL. Brodie Bennett was second with a 120 foot effort. Levi Peters was the only rider

in the 85Sr class to top the hill, and his 6.024 second time was good for the class win and also the Youth Fast Time award. hat kind of Moms would give up Mothersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day weekend to spend time at the track? Only the best Moms in the world! This year many families began arriving early Saturday to get some open practice in and then they hung around for racing on Sunday. Their reward - spending quality family time and to top it off, enjoying the first great weather weekend of the year. For the 375 entries on Sunday there was a new configuration of the west side of the track to also make the racing even better. Bowman later commented, “First moto I got a great start and was able to hold off one of the Yde brothers that dove inside. Once I got around the corner I had a clear track and was able to stay out front. Second moto I came out of the gate real strong and was able to use the clear track again to stay out front. I was getting a little tired that second moto but the flag came out and I was out front. I need some more riding time to get the program going for more classes. The track conditions were really nice. Hats off to the crew that puts in all the effort to keep the track looking good, they do a great job. I was praying the rain

John Stewart was leading as they headed onto the track but Jake Smith had moved out front by the time the second lap began. Once out front, Smith cruised to the win. Stewart was being pressured by Josh Dearborn and Ian Malinowski who both got by before the white flag came out. Malinowski held on in second with Dearborn taking the checkers just ahead of Justin Fluger. Fluger was out front right away in moto two, and then opened up a gap as he took the moto win. Dearborn was running second, but shortly after lap three began both Smith and Malinowski got past. Smith held off constant pressure from Malinowski as he crossed the finish in second. The overall went to Smith (1/2) with Fluger (4/1) and Malinowski

I never really ever rode one so I had to get used to getting a start and actually ride it. First moto I took the lead and just ran with it. Second moto started mid pack maybe but I was able to work my way up. On the final lap in the final section I got close enough I thought I could catch first, but just couldn’t get it done. I went 1/2 for the day and it worked for the overall, it was really fun and I had a blast. unshine and blue skies greeted racers and spectators for the 2014 Motokazie Pro-Am motocross event held at the pastoral Midway Motocross Park in the rolling hills of southern Minnesota. A weekend full of ﬂying motorcycles (and golf carts), bar-b-cue and fellowship, the type that only exists in the racing community. Saturday was reserved for a full day of practice for the young and old alike to continue building skills that were dormant during the six month winter hiatus. A little side 22

event racing was slated to take place on the mini-moto track in the form of pit bike races and a golf cart race. The Motokazie crew had the track groomed to perfection and the racers were prepared to take full advantage offered by this top shelf racing facility. A great big hand to Motokazie sponsors Zigler Caterpillar and Matejcek’s Implement Company for providing the big earth moving rigs that helped to whip the course back into race condition after a full day of practice by the masses. In addition to the District 23 regulars, Pro racer Christian

Craig came out to treat the fans to a special kind of fast that can only be developed by competing in the most elite motocross series. In the ProAm racing, Cody Vanbuskirk made the trip up from Illinois to steal the 250A overall. Minnesota’s Brandon Reihm gave him a solid run for the win though, taking the first moto. In the second moto Vanbuskirk got the edge to win, and take the overall ahead of Reihm. Iowa’s Kurt McCabe was third in both motos ahead of Joe Perron in the seventeen rider class. Cristian Craig topped both motos in the Open A class ahead of Reihm. Vanbuskirk got the best of McCabe for third overall as Mitchell Koester went 5-6 for fifth overall. Three riders who are sure to match the pace of the fastest A-riders in the future are the in the 50cc Premix 7-8 division. #91 KTM 50SX pilot Ethan Rennie made the scenic trip to Midway from the shores of Lake Minnetonka in the town of Excelsior, MN. He carried home the biggest trophy the class had to offer, but he had to work pretty hard to earn it. Trenton Goodenough headed

Goodenough rode at a pace to garner second place. He definitely has the will to win, and to quote the great blues legend Muddy Waters, its in him, and its got to come out… so let that boy Boogy Woogy. Cobra mounted Caleb Bohlman from Princeton, MN rode hard to score a third on the day with 34 moto ﬁnishes. So, on the Saturday evening before the races, for a little extra curricular fun, the track hosted a golf cart race on the mini track. Each cart had to have a driver and a co-pilot. Grabbing the holeshot (as it were) in his trusty (not so racing) steed, Mark Vanderwerf got out to an early lead. As the carts are pretty wide compared to the narrow mini track, it looked like victory was assured for Vanderwerf. Piloting the cart in second place, driver Lizzy Swanson wasn’t about to back off approaching the rhythm section where Vanderwerf just didn’t have it in him to stand on the gas. Well, Swanson drove it in deep up Womenʼs class winner Jacqueline Riess, on her KTM 150 2 stroke.

Well Lizzy’s traction control technician Jacki Riess, standing on the back of the cart as it was circulating was kind of like a Raggedy Ann doll zip tied to an industrial grade paint mixer. She took a real beating the ﬁrst time through the whoops. Lizzy’s attitude for the second lap was this, “Win it or Bin it” so no backing off there. Mcgurer Fast at Hillclimb Opener

he Pleasure Riders M/C club opened the District 17 hill climb season with a weekend double header on their 155 foot, three stage hill near Cayuga, Indiana. Joe McGurer was the fastest all weekend, taking the Overall Fast Time award both days. McGurer took the fast time Saturday night with a 3.724 second run to win the 600cc class, with Andy Fortner second in 3.752 seconds and Jared McKay only 3/1000’s behind him. Fortner was also his closest challenger for Fast Time, posting a 3.732 second time to win the Senior class. With a 3.889 class winning time in the 250cc class, McGurer took that win. Eric Wheelwright and Mike Pulver were also double class winners Saturday night. Wheelwright took the 450cc and 600cc 4stroke class wins with times of 3.787 and 3.781 seconds. Troy Camerer was second in the 450cc class while Cody Jenner came in second in the four stroke class. Pulver’s wins came in the Super Senior and Open stock classes. His 4.083 second run was good for the win in Super Senior with Keith Klett second while his 4.093 second time was good for the Open Stock win with Aaron Swisher second. McGurer repeated his Saturday performance Sunday, again winning the 250 and 600cc classes and claiming the Fast 24

Time award. He carded a 3.592 second time to win the 600cc class and take the fast time, with Matt Peters second with a 3.723 second run and Cody Jenner third in 3.748 seconds. Kirk Gorsuch was his closest challenger for fast time with a 3.683 second time to win the 450cc class. Levi Peters was a triple winner Sunday, taking the 85Sr, 125cc and 200cc classes. His 4.372 second time was good for the 85Sr win and Youth Fast Time. Andrew Fortner was second in the class with a 4.396 second run, and also his closest challenger for fast time. Levi took the 125cc class win with Morgan Wheelwright second, then took the 200cc class win with a 3.962 second run with Morgan again claiming second. In other youth class action, Christoper Kane Brown won the 50cc and 65cc classes both days, while Brodie Bennett claimed the 85Jr class win both days. ‘Little Fast Andy’ Fortner took the 85Sr win Saturday night with a 4.510 second time, which was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. In Women’s class action, Morgan Wheelwright was the Saturday winner with Shay Ashworth second, while Ashworth claimed the win Sunday. Lilah McGurer was third both days. he Wisconsin Observed Trials Association (WOTA) held the 27th annual Wauzeka Trials Event on May 10th and 11th at the Mark and Kim Doll farm. After last year Kim lost her battle with cancer. This year riders wore t-shirts that stated “Riding in Memory of Kim Doll”. Weekend sections were all set up by Kim’s son Pat Doll. All classes had challenging but enjoyable sections. After Saturday’s ride members enjoyed a meal prepared by the Kim’s co-workers from the First Responders of Wauzeka. The rain held off until the last riders were finishing up on Sunday. Skip Check rode for his first event and won the Vintage class both days. The largest class was the Intermediate, which was won by Adam Gustafson on Saturday and by his uncle Ryan Gustafson on Sunday. The Advance class had Jake Poth taking the top spot on Saturday, and Kailey Rivenburgh and her brother Ryan ending in a tie on Sunday. Kailey won the tiebreaker. Greg Sassi, who just moved up to the Expert class this year, took first place both days. Everyone will be looking forward to the return to Wauzeka next year.

Beating the mud at Crossroads Mason, Illinois - May 11 By James Pinckard

ound two of the Fly Racing Showdown Series started the weekend with a prep ped track practice on Saturday. After a week of rain, the conditions were rough and rutted - setting up perfect for Sunday. Saturday night the sky became dark and then the rain started. It looked like the rain would just make the track better, but then one last storm came through early in the morning leaving it covered in mud. The crew did what they could and the riders were ready to go when they called the first class to the line. The Open C class was first to tackle the wet track. In the first moto it was wild, with riders sliding all over the place and many tipping over or sliding down. One rider who seemed to have things â&#x20AC;&#x153;mostlyâ&#x20AC;? under control was Kawasaki mounted Clay Schreiner. He also fell a couple times, but kept it up long enough to take the first moto win. Kawasaki rider Dylan Tyler finished with Andrew Hughes third. In the second moto Schreiner started out front and with the track now being in great shape, he had no problems taking the win and the overall. Hughes powered his Suzuki to second for the moto and second overall while Tyler who finished third. The Schoolboy class had

KTM rider Gage Noblitt doing a great job keeping his 125 on the pipe and cranking through the mud for the first moto win. Damon Evans finished second with Dillon Cantrell third on his KTM. In the second moto Evans had his Yamaha on the gas taking the moto and overall win. Noblitt finished second as Cantrell took third once again. The first of the smaller bikes on the track were the 85cc classes. The track was so thick the first moto that some of the bikes got stuck! In the 85Sr class Honda rider Skyler Leaf showed some mad mud skills, taking the first moto win ahead of Derick Bell and Troy Noland. In the second moto, Leaf again took the win. Noland improved, finishing second. Kawasaki rider Jacob Mcgee finished third in the second moto, after having issues in the first moto which left him back in sixth, he ended up fourth overall. Bell grabbed the last podium spot for third overall (3-4). Before the start of the 65Jr race, KTM rider Carter Snowden told me he was going to get the holeshot. When the gate dropped it was indeed Snowden out front. Snowden never backed off the gas and took both moto wins and the overall. KTM rider Clayton Anderson finished third the first moto, but came back strong in the second moto finishing second and second overall. Connor Dawkins finished 2-3 for third overall.

Over the winter months, the track owner Kurt Caswell was involved in a serious auto accident, with recovery outlook making the first race questionable. Through the help of dedicated staff, volunteers and friends, the Berm Benders facility was massaged into shape to host the first racer after a long winter. The Berm Benders Motocross facility is a very beautiful location for hosting District 23 MX races, located about 1.5 hours north of the Twin Cities metro. If you want to make a day trip to see some of the best racing that MN has to offer, make the scenic drive to Mora, maybe stop in at “The Sportsman's Cafe” for a great yummy breakfast, then make the 15 minute run to the track.

he first race of the year for Sunset Ridge got underway this past weekend the tenth of May. It was a two day event with Saturday being a District Race and Sunday adding in a Pro-am, which brought out a very large A class from around the area, ready to go after the prize. It was a perfect day for racing and the track held up great thanks to the Sunset crew being on top of things as they do so well. The forecast was plagued with rain all week and it did make its way to the track, but not until the last two motos, so everything went along just fine. Heading up to the top of the hill Williams stuck it inside on Burk to take over second while Nick Blumer followed suit, taking over third as they blasted down the hill. Coming around the sweeper Wever was charging hard from a bad start and pushed up to fourth, taking third in the air over the first jump. Coming back around for the second lap Wever had been pushing hard and finally got around Launius to take over the lead and rode a smooth race to the win and the overall. Launius took second overall and Sam Tinkey moved into third on the last lap to take third overall, with no time to spare. Open A was ready for the Pro-AM to get underway. Twenty-six fast riders from across six states signed up for action today with a lot of the heavy hitters out there. Kody Kamm fresh off a great year of Snocross, Joey Dalzell getting ready for the outdoor nationals among many others, it was anyone’s race today. In the first moto Missouri’s Justin Freund took the win followed up by Drayke Sizemore and Cody Vanbuskirk. Right off the start of the second moto Indiana’s Josh Osby, the winner of 250A took the lead with Sizemore and Kurt McCabe right behind him. Packing into that first turn Kamm cut in hard to jump out front to take over the lead. As the

dust settled and everyone fell into line it was Sizemore still in second and Osby back to third. After several laps of back and forth Ty Tyrell moved into the game taking over third as Kamm and Sizemore went at it up front. Seemingly out of no where Freund got a head of steam and starting flying through the pack. Picking people off like it was nothing, moving straight to the front like he had been just waiting for the race to come to him. f you do an internet search to find out who the Greek sun god is was, you might find two answers, either Helios or Apollo. But on Sunday, the T&T Riders of Marshfield WI hosted their annual District 16 MX race, and whomever was in charge made sure, finally that it was a nice and sunny day for the race. If I actually had a diary tracking the races that it rained on for the Marshfield crew, I would need a new diary, so it was a welcome sight to have clear skies for the weekend. Local racer Scotty Ramker and his friends made sure that they continued what they started a couple years ago by helping the one of the District’s oldest clubs continue to make improvements to the track, and the efforts paid off as the entries were doubled from last year. A few more trees were cut down to widen the track, and some of the older snow fence was taken down and rebuilt

Kyle Meives, Nic Gale and Eric Decker had swapped positions numerous times with Decker ending up behind Dommer and Toelle. The 250B class was one of the larger classes on the day. Marshfield resident Jeff Stewart had a good fan base cheering him on to the win both motos at his home track. Austin Hamburgur was solid going 2-2 and Eric Andersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3-4 locked up the bronze medal. So if Apollo or Helios can make sure the sun comes out again for 2015, make plans to be at the annual race because with all the improvements each year, it gets better and better. othing like springtime motocross in Wisconsin! We’ve had snow, downpours, 70 degree weather, then more snow and rain so far this year. Upon waking for 7am practice, riders were greeted to 30 degree cool temps. Of course most of Wisconsin this winter was used to negative temps so 30 degrees almost felt like a heat wave. I still had to bust out my snowmobile gloves for practice and turn the heater on to get my bike started, but hey, we were racing. The Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club held their annual motocross event in Nekoosa at the legendary Dyracuse Recreational Park. Many racers there said they developed a lifelong love for the sport at a young age. Dylan Narel has been racing for almost twenty years, and is only twenty-four now. He says races like the one Sunday are why he rides. “It’s not just, Okay, let’s see who can run the fastest,” Narel said. “There’s a lot more that goes into it. You have to have the proper bike setup as well as the proper gear and riding technique.” “Races like this help you develop character, I believe, in that these are very muddy conditions for these bikes,” said John Lazar, the president of the Rapid Angels. “These bikes have very small wheels and it’s hard for those kids to ride through that sand. It’s a challenge that they probably won’t get in a lot of places in their lives.

always done it as a family together. We’re always on the road together so it keeps you united as one.” He says he appreciates the opportunity he was given, so now he’s the one giving back to the sport he loves. “When I was down at the Pee-wees, you look up to all those A-riders so I like to be involved and helping with the peewees and younger kids.” For him and his fellow riders, it’s that family atmosphere that keeps them coming back. Conditions are just a side consideration. Sunday’s race also benefits the community. Some of the money that the club raises goes towards high school scholarship funds. The nice thing about Dyracuse Recreational Park is that it has three motocross tracks and a huge trail system with lots of land to ride on for all ability levels, so we seem to see a wide variety of riders and families at the facility. However... for the District 16 spring MX race it seems that the sand masters are usually the riders who are at the front of their classes. With all the cold, snow and rain, the track eventually thawed out just in time for the race. The track got good and rough and as the rain fell, it made the track even tougher to navigate at times. With all the rain, the club decided to run the peewee’s on the small sand track instead of the clay supercross track. It’s a smaller track, but the kids seem to have a blast ripping around it with all the corners and tabletops. Deegan Vanvreede led both 50Jr motos, beating runner-up Riley Busse. Carson Syverson, Lane Rhyme, and Kyler Gollubske swapped positions each messy moto, rounding out the top five. 50Sr followed and it was Nolan Schweighardt who put his KTM out front both motos. Aiden Price and Jackson Oehlhof gave chase both motos but Schweighardt was able to keep both at bay to win the CYCLE USA, June 2014

overall. Ben Blazek and Owen Vaneperen rounded out the top five. During intermission after the first set of motos on the main track, the club and riders held a meeting as the rain was coming down pretty good at times, but being “real” motocrossers a vote was held and the second motos were a go, although they

shortened the motos by one lap. I focused my attention on the large gate of Open C riders that were lined up. With a large class, getting good starts are crucial on the sand track, because having to come through the pack can be a challenge, especially in the cold, wet, and rough conditions. Getting out front and having clear vision is essential and Brady Bill from Reedsburg, WI proved he could get the good starts needed and run ahead of the pack. In moto one, Keegan Cummins, Nick Kubowski, Ben Kurtzweil, and Cody Kropitlowski were battling behind Bill. In moto two, Bill again got out front and led the group to the checkers to get the overall. This time Ben Parmeter was giving chase in second place. Kubowski ran third ahead of Cummins and Kropitlowski. 250A had eleven riders ready to do battle and it was Narel who rocketed out of the gate and led the moto start to finish. Mitch Koester who ran B class last year moved up, and looked good running in the number two spot. Vaughn Mays, Dylan Ziolkowski and Andy Lieders rounded out the top five in moto one. In moto two, Mays edged out Koester on the holeshot and led the group down the front start straight. Koester hung with

Mays for most of the moto just ahead of Ziolkowski and Narel. As the moto stretched on, Mays opened up a lead on Koester and his 3-1 moto scores netted him the overall. Koester’s consistent 2-2 scores gave him second, beating out Narel’s 1-4. Ziolkowski was 4-3 and Lieders rounded out the top five. Sportsmen B/C saw two different moto winners with Nick Randrup taking moto one, and Blake Kropidlowski taking the second, but neither rider was consistent enough to garner the overall. It was Malcolm Gustafson from Colby, WI who went 2-2 for the overall. Kropidlowski’s 5-1 gave him second overall ahead of Brady Bill’s 3-3. Randrup went 1-6 and Kory Sorge rounded out the top five. The Rapid Angels were appreciative of all those who decided to come and be part of their annual mx race. As the summer arrives, keep all the great riding opportunities in mind at the park. egacross was back at it the seventeenth of May. The season is well underway now and the track is about to go under the knife. This was the last race for the five weeks while the crew at Megacross starts to overhaul the track to bring everyone something new. Shortly to follow will be the Endurocross making its way back to the track after a great test run last year; it’s really fun to watch. This week was a nightmare for all around the area, it literally rained every day Monday through Friday. Luckily it wasn’t pouring and the crew out at Megacross was able to scrap the mud away, and after a huge effort, the track was in prime shape for racing. In fact it even got a little dry, just a testament to unless its underwater, Megacross will be running. Luke Jackson flying in the 85Jr class. There was some great racing Eguia. Around the first corner into the tonight as always, it moved along as whoops, Schnowske got out front as Wyatt smooth as ever with 65Jr coming out with Mattson moved into third with the entire a battle ready to ensue. Ten riders left the pack running very close. Coming down gate with Krystian Janik out front folthe straight into the bowl turn Mattson lowed by Ryder Schnowske and Lolito took the inside to take over second. Just has he went by, Janik lost the front end going down briefly. Janik was quickly Justine Stevenson #777 and Ashleigh Newmarker battle in the Wonen’s class.

on the move coming back from sixth place. Up front, Mattson was able to take the lead. On the last lap Janik made it back into third. Mattson took the win with Schnowske close behind in second. 14-24 was another race to watch tonight with the gates close to capacity. Ripping off the line Damon Thomas took the holeshot on his new Honda with Ryan Robinson back at it this year, now on a Honda as well. Jacob Wever was right behind them, also switching bikes this year to you guessed it, a Honda. Wever shot into the whoops passing Robinson for second as Thomas was putting it down hard. Wever has all over looking for his spot and found it right before the finish area, going inside to take the lead. Coming around for the second lap Austin Beaty got into the mix, taking third from Robinson. He held on for two laps, but Robinson came back as they flew over the line taking the white flag. The race was set in stone as the last lap went by quickly and they crossed the line with Wever taking the win, Thomas second and Robinson in for a solid third. Open A came out strong tonight with Kyle White back at it after running the last few Supercross races with an injured hand after the Arenacross season. Off the gates Maxx Malatia jumped out front with White and Chad Johnson right behind. In the whoops Ronnie Hapner took over third. White and Malatia, being team mates and riding together all the time know what each other are going to do,

making it interesting. Heading down the straight Logan Skaggs came pinning it hard to take over third from Hapner as Malatia and White were making a good gap on the rest of the pack. White was trying everything to get by with a last ditch effort coming up to the checkered flag, not being able to make it happen. 85Sr was exciting tonight with Chase Sexton out at the track. Off the line Sexton took the holeshot followed by Conner Burger and Nolan Dickinson. Into the second turn Sexton tipped over putting Burger into first with Dickinson and Garrett Ward sliping past as well. Sexton got right back after it taking over third before the finish area. Hitting the table top Sexton split Dickinson and Burger in the air, landing into first coming down the straight. Ward was gaining ground on the pack as they ran out of time. Burger and Dickinson stuck it out for the top three behind Sexton, ending another great race out there tonight. 250C was stacked tonight, packing twenty riders into the gates. Blasting off the line Mike Nechvatal took the holeshot with Colton Slamans and Justin Carr right on his back. Hitting the table tops, Trevor Nelson was on the move taking over third was Nechvatal was holding off Slamans. The battle went back and forth. Shaking things up and holding out for the last lap Nelson was able to get to the line to take the win followed by Nechvatal and Slamans ending a great night of racing out at Megacross. With all the rain this week and even rain forecast for the day, the turnout was great tonight and there was no shortage of great races for everyone to enjoy. Keep an eye out for the new Megacross coming up soon, be sure to check their website and facebook for progress of the project that will certainly be a nice addition.

his was Round 4 and 5 of the NITRO (North Illinois Trial Riders Organization) 2014 series. For those unfamiliar with the Tilton Trials, the contest was held in a 100 acre ATV park owned and set right in the middle of the city of Tilton. The land provides great hills, ravines, creeks and logs for riders to enjoy, and the loop consists of ATV paths, which mean they’re wide and easy to ride. Yet Tilton for all its great qualities has one problem, mud. A day or two of rain and you’re fine. More than that and it turns into a slimy, slippery, bottomless muck ranging from deep puddles that hide how deep they are to the soft clingy clay that stops your wheel like riding into a giant glue trap. And so, with the unpredictable Illinois weather in mind, the Trialsmaster (Mike Cross) had set out two plans. Plan A was a long loop with sections both on top and down in the bottom, and plan B totally on top, keeping the riders from having to negotiate ugly hills if they didn’t have to. And so the week before, as the sky was plagued with on/off rain showers that made the ground wet but wasn’t enough to take it one way or the other, it still wasn’t decided which loop we were going to do. Until Fri-

day, when the sky opened up in a day-long deluge of rain/ sleet/ hail and cold, enough to take the trails past the tipping point. So Plan B it was. Most of the sections up top were what you man made, a mix of logs and concrete slabs (the east central Illinois version of rocks) set up in interesting ways. There was the bedrock section, featuring a gigantic ‘picnic table’ that the riders had to go over. Lincoln Logs, a section of crisscrossing logs, and the Double-step, with concrete slaps set into a hill as ‘stairs’ that the riders had to go up. And for Sunday we had the woodchip pile, a towering fifty foot tall pile of woodchips for the riders to negotiate up and over, complete with a truck and a SUV that the upper level riders had to negotiate. While Mother Nature had once again done her best to confound our efforts to show off all the great terrain Tilton had to offer, Mike had created a wonderland of sections that were very different from what a lot of the other contests offered. Saturday started out sunny, but it soon clouded over and we got hit with another round of drizzly rain, turning the already muddy sections into more of a mess. Some sections fell apart, others were made harder as mud packed up in the rider’s wheels and they refused to turn. Yet riders still seemed to be having a good time, trading ‘survival’ stories and joking about the different conditions from what they normally ride. Day two soon came, and lo and behold, bright clear sunny warm weather! Just like every other event day, it started with the Youth. Riders as young as four had their own little sections, rocking through them on their electric Ossets and gas powered 50’s, including one that was actually run through one of the ‘grown up’ sections. And then it was time for the rest of the riders to take to the loop. Mike and Annmarie Cross (the other Trialsmaster for the event, Mike’s wife, and Novice rider) had spent hours the night before resetting the loop to make sure that everyone had as fun a time today as they could. They reused sections, ran sections with the same mark-

ers as the day before but switched the start and end gates so riders had to find new lines up the obstacles, and even carved out an entirely new section! In a weird reversal of fortune, the bright sunny weather started drying out the ground and making it tacky, providing traction where the day before had been none. Rider after rider came through with clean loops, turning the day into a mental ride to make sure you saved every point. Mitchell Littlefield won Intermediate with a total of 1 point for the day. Elliot Key won Sportsman with a grand total of two. The upper classes had a low point day as well, with Adam Hare taking Advanced with 10 points, Travis Daniels won expert with 34, and Quinn Wentzel taking Champ with 6.

or the first time in years Pine Ridge Raceway hosted a double header prior to their Spring Classic Pro AM this Mothers Day weekend. Scheduling that early in the spring in the north woods can sometimes be a gamble, but everyone was a winner this weekend as it was perfect spring weather for both days of racing to open the 2014 season for a lot of riders who were getting their feet wet after a long, long winter. On Saturday the Peewee Sr class was exciting to watch. Drake Dionee was in a class of his own and had the track dialed in the first moto. In moto two Dionee made it a challenge for

himself having trouble off the line, but it didn’t take long for him to get back to the lead, and go 1-1 for the day. VanEperen went 2-2 for second. The Sportsman’s class was pretty exciting as well. The two hot shoes of the class; Hunter Sayles on his Yamaha and Collin Hass on his new

KTM, both had some issues, but in opposite motos. In moto one Wade Gilbert was out front early on his Kawasaki, but it didn’t take long for Sayles to make quick work of the field and check out and disappear. After having some struggles early Hass was able to work his way to fourth. Gilbert held on to second and Cody Jones stayed steady in third. Moto two had Sayles and Hass out front early. This time Austin Childers was in the mix along with Jones. Hass was holding Sayles off as it looked like Sayles was just waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger. Once he did he seemed to pull a small lead, but by lap four Sayles had trouble in the back and didn’t come around until he had already dropped to 20th. Handing the lead to Hass, Childers held on to second, Jones again consistent in third. Hass’ 4-1 got him the overall as Jones went 33 for second, and Gilbert’s fourth in moto two got him third overall. +25A saw good racing both days. On Satur-

day Rodney VanEperen (Peewee rider Owen’s father) gave eventual winner Dustin Pulley a run in the early laps of each moto, but the smooth and steady riding of Pulley would take over at the end. Sunday saw the return of Eric Uren to the A class. Eric had a leg injury that had very serious complications afterwards, a few years back. Great to see him return, Eric came back in perfect form showing speed, and he was able to pick up second on Sunday in +25A behind Pulley.

The weekend had some major standout riders and at the top of the list is the earlier mentioned Hunter Sayles who had several moto wins. It was impressive to see Dustin Pulley not only dominate +25A, but hop back into the 450A class Sunday and get the overall. Jacob Vaness was the guy to beat in both 250A and 450A all weekend in every moto on his Sportland 2 Suzuki. Bryce Hansen won almost every moto he entered on his Southeast Sales Kawasaki 85. This Motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day weekend came to close with much success. The turnout was great and lots of riders got their first race, if not their first ride in for the season in the north woods. It could have been a risky weekend in the springâ&#x20AC;Ś but this risk came with much reward for the riders and the track crew. area a couple of days before, leaving the course in the best condition that one could ever dream of. It was so nice, that while scouting locations to shoot photos for this story, I was actually feeling my heart break for the thought that I couldn’t ride. In true Millville fashion, the race course was flowing with plenty of elevation changes and very fast. Large sections of grass track insured that terminal velocity could be reached multiple times a lap. The Premier/ Mini/ Girls class had the unenviable task of being the first racers to blaze through the grass tracks, made sketchy by the fine coating of dew that settled on the grounds the night before. They all did a great job, but the one that did the best was Austin Nelson who topped the charts in the Premier class at the end of every lap. Kawasaki mounted Jarrett Loegering crossed the finish line two minutes later with Bailey McCarthy some ten seconds astern, in third. Macro class leader #198 Travis Illies is on a tear in 2014, taking his second win in a row. Illies wheeled his KTM to thirteen laps, the only rider to break the dirty dozen. Second place went to Logan Mowry with Cavan Heuer in third. Those Macro riders are like factory riders. All they have to do is get results, watch cartoons and look suave in their riding gear! They don’t have to wash their bikes, or fix them. Someone else does their laundry, buys groceries and cooks for them. They don’t have to drive to the races, just hop in the rig and fall asleep, wake up when they arrive at the

track. They got the life, eh? Next up, in the Women’s division, third place finisher #28 Katy Vanderwerf pulled a strong holeshot to lead into the woods but encountered some trouble that allowed both Mary Schreiner and Kristi Grote to get around. Try as she might, Grote could never head Schreiner, always within thirty seconds. In Super Senior C, the racing for the top spot was pretty tight with #50 Dan Forslund battling it out with race winner Mitchell Trom. Trom got a bad start and battled from sixth place at the end of lap one to the top spot by the end of the race, snatching the win on the last lap from the runner-up Forslund. Forslund Racing would have to be content with bringing home a pair of silvers from Spring Creek as son Jaime competed in the Open C class. The younger Forslund led the first laps, then drop to third on lap three then regain one spot to finish in the runner-up position. Jacob Wilson sat in second the whole race, stalking the leader and waiting to pounce when the time was right. In the Vet B class, the top two riders were fighting “Hammer and Tong” for the right to kiss the Trophy Girl, never more than a minute apart at the scoring barrels. #481 Scott Lehnertz and KTM mounted #319 Derek Otteson were battling hard with Otteson assuming the point for the first two laps. On lap three Otteson was relegated to runner-up by Lehnertz. In the end it was Lehnertz first to the checkers with Otteson trailing fifteen seconds behind. Otteson won the first race of the year at Cambridge and Lehnertz didn’t make that event, so Otteson has a commanding lead in the standings thus far. In the 250A fracas young gun Austin Pogreba has been riding hard and learning all the tricks of the trade of the off-road world in the junior ranks for a while. Well, he is up in the big leagues now and wasting no time in finding the way to the front. The 250A class is very competitive, but like the highly feared honey badger, Austin... he just don’t care! He will take on all comers. Pogreba, at the end of lap one was running seventh, wicked it up. End of lap two he was into third where he waited to pounce. Last lap he went from third to first. Not easily though, because veteran #726 Jeff Colbert was hot on his heels! At the wire Pogreba won by a scant two seconds after two hours and twenty five minutes. race to win with a lead of over four minutes over the Yamaha of Dave Grunklee. Today Nate Ferderer was in a class by himself in the AA melee. At the end of each lap he would gain around forty seconds on the second place rider Kyle Nelson on his Yamaha. Dylan Debel hung on to the bronze position on the severely whooped out course. Checkpoint offroadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Matt Stavish held down fourth. If Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not mistaken, the top four AA class bikes were all equipped and by Matt. The racing at Spring Creek MX Park never fails to impress. The setting is so beautiful and the facility is truly world class. With the owner of the facility being a multi time national champion, you know that the layout would have something for every racer, and so it did, in spades! I-94 Supercross Opens in Baraboo Baraboo, Wisconsin - May 17 By Dave Hollub

or the second year in a row the I-94 SX season opener was held in conjunction with the annual Circus Heritage Boy Scouts Jamboree held at the Sauk County Fairgrounds in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Last year the race was held as entertainment for the scouts and as soon as the race concluded plans were made to repeat the show again this year. With the background of hundreds of Boy Scouts cooking over open fires and camping in tents, Chris Halverson’s crew led by Jason Erdmann built the track, and soon the sounds of bikes filled the air. Once the bikes were out on the track, the grandstands began filling up with a very enthusiastic crowd anticipating a night of action. The I-94 SX format consists of a lot of track time for racers with practice, another seven laps of heat racing for gate position, and then nine lap mains for all the glory. Riders are split up into twelve classes so even with the extended laps the action goes fast and finishes early enough to head out and grab a pizza before heading home. Brad Johnson had pretty clear sailing in the Vet heat race but when the rubber-band snapped on the main Ted Coplien was right on him at the holeshot. Coplien slipped past in the whoops and the lead changed several times. By the time lap three was over Johnson had settled into the lead to the finish with Coplien close behind. Jackson Oehlhof had an easy win in the 50cc heat. When the gate dropped on the main Oehlhof was ready and launched out to grab the holeshot. Potter but soon settled into a pace that propelled him on to the win. Tyler Poker and Madison Mallory were having their own battle for third place and as the race went on they swapped position several times. Poker had the edge at the checkers to claim third. Oehlhof after his race, “This was a good night. I got first place and the whoops got really gnarly. I lapped every single person tonight, it was hard to do but the bike was running good. Thank you to Rob’s Performance, Dad & Mom, Grandma & Grandpa, KTM, Decal Works, PR2, EVS, Fly, and Renthal.” The tight narrow track was a challenge for the Quads and resulted in a lot of bumping as the racing heated up. Jay Mittelstaedt edged his way out front at the holeshot and then used the open track ahead of him to keep his lead. Bret Beier was going through the tight corners wheel to wheel with Jacob Powell while Josh McClelland was poised to move in. By lap five Powell had managed a small lead over Beier, and then he held on in second. McClelland went to work on Beier in the last half of the race and finally slipped by just in time to take third. Mat Herrington was the ‘Ironman” of the night as he raced and won four classes. In the 14-29 Sportsman class he grabbed the holeshot but spent most of the race defending the lead from a hard charging Jakob Passineau who in turn

was busy holding off Hunter Schueller. In 250B Passineau once again pushed Herrington all the way to the finish. Ben Grosse started the 250B main in third but after going down on the fourth lap, the best he could do was a fifth behind Stanley Ward and Tyler Parker. In 450B Herrington edged Bryce Telfer out for the holeshot and then opened up a gap while Telfer and Passineau battled for second. The position changed several times during the race as both riders had to get physical in the corners to gain the edge. In

others day weekend in the racing world is really just another weekend. Lets face it anyone that races knows without mom’s support it can be difficult to race. This weekend is no different, except that we try to recognize the importance of how much behind the scenes moms do. This double header weekend, with the now established GP racing kicked off at 10:30 on Saturday. Practice laps and then racing. Woods, and moto riders battling is fun to see, as they both have better styles on the different types of course/ track in front of them. A/B classes rocketed off the line with the GP normal riders quickly establishing themselves as the riders to beat. Ryan Moss (24), Chase Robinson (8), Travis Ward (51) and returning after two years off, Ben Schmidt. The “teacher” Moss pulled the holeshot and didn’t look back in the first moto. Ward failed to recover from a last place start. Robinson was the Ironman of the day, signing up and racing three classes. He followed in third as this

moto ended. The “teacher” has worked with and trained with both Robinson, and later Ward. Score one for the teacher! In the same moto staggered start was the B class line. Nate Hornung is an established mx rider and Blake Ryan a solid woods kid were battling for the win. Hornung having the KX450 and Ryan on a KTM 200 is exactly what GP racing is all about. Hornung led the first moto with Ryan stalking him in the trees. Hornung, not allergic to woods racing as he had raced HS for many years as a kid, had problems with that nimble KTM of Ryan’s dogging him. In this moto Ryan took the win with Hornung stating, “it’s been a while since I rode the woods stuff.” Second motos for these classes were a little less lively as Schmidt found a tree at speed and rang his bell pretty well in the 122-Open class. Ward ran a solid second moto for the overall win, Robinson and Moss were right there but Robinson starting to feel the effects of almost three hours of intense racing was

wearing down. Moss rode flawlessly and claimed second overall. Twenty-five C class riders hit the track/ course today. The epic battle was most evident in this class as the up and coming woods rider Jacob McCarrens (925) on a Hall’s Cycles backed Husqvarna 125 and Tai Judd (1) on a Countryside Husqvarna running the number 1 plate from MX Schoolboy class last season. Jake Thompson was the only four stroke in the top six. Throw in the mix Garrett Ward on his new RCR KX100, and Dylan Broll and Spencer Neuhor on his older Husky, sit back and let the fun begin. As per normal in C classes, consistency in moto finishes usually takes a back seat to over riding and pushing beyond one’s limits. This was the case with all but McCarrens who rode solid. He went 1-1 for the win. Ward went from last to second as his starting process on the 100 is less then stellar, but had good form during the first moto. Second moto not so much with a soil sample and the other riders able to pick up the speed with the first moto experience.. Ward ended the day 2-6 for a fourth. Judd, fourth in the first moto, wasn’t used to the trails or the longer motos but started to adapt as the day wore on. Judd did great with his second in the second moto to pull off a second overall. Thompson wrestled his Yamaha around with a 3-4 for a third overall. The “old” man in the C class, Dylan Broll secured fifth and did that with a 8-3 score. The Gran Prix on Saturday before the Sunday HS is becoming a real hit. Nothing like a solid afternoon of racing to get the bugs sorted out before an full day of racing in Hare Scrambles. Sunday of course was Mothers day. Riders were greeted with a carnation for mom. DLN Floral Creations from Naperville supplied the 200+ flowers to make this day a little special for mom. see that it was going to be a big one. District 17 and 16 points events combined for bragging rights til the next event. There are three events in District 17 based parks, which make for great racing days and meeting new faces that normally wouldn’t happen. Solid mini classes, like fifteen 50cc kids and eighteen 65cc beginners are showing the woods crowd is increasing. Eighty-two C class riders and twenty-five +50 riders now that is some morning racing on a Sunday! The 65cc Beginner class and the 85cc/ SuperMini/ 65cc big course run at the same time at FVOR. The beginners in 2014 are now running 40 minutes which gives them a solid step to work towards the hour race the other more experienced kids are running. Lake Plowman and Elijah Berryman off 50cc classes last year did battle, Plowman got the holeshot and led wire to wire. The story was Berryman coming from sixteenth, and going into the second spot at the lap ten mark. Trevor Keogh who started in second was only passed by Berryman, rode strong all day. Caden Cox bounced around the top ten all race til the end and collected up his strategy to pull in fourth. The morning big bike race lined up 106 riders strong. Only 24 of these guys and girls are non-C riders. Today was the first and LAST day that the full EX section was included in the race. In fact it was only included for one lap. Eighty some riders in three C classes, 30 seconds apart descending on a 300’ section of tires, logs, more tires, and then the matrix,

winding it up with three more logs and the final tire climb. Needless to say it was mayhem. So the sight was 40 or more riders “log jammed” in the middle of that section. The next lap around the riders were thankful to see that 90% of the ex section was taken out. +50A & +50B was ahead of this group and got through unscathed. New to the class Anthony Robinson, Greg Gourley and Tom Burtle were there to show the last year top dogs Greg Birkland and Rick Marht that the new guys had some speed. Motorcycle racing as any racing with age classes means that riders anticipate the arrival of the next age birthday! Not many want to get older, but if it means new competition, and being the top dog for a while, well it’s the “good’’ part of aging! Robinson, Burtle, and Birkland were the only riders in the morning class to do eleven laps, and only twenty-four riders total out of the 106 did ten. Interesting part of this, eight of those were C class, seven were B and the rest the older A class guys. Nothing like climbing a hill in the +50B class on your shiny new 450, and have a kid wheeling by you on his 100. Quickly makes you sit back and think! All the top five kids in the “little C” class were on 85’s last year if not 100’s. Some still race the 100cc machines due to their size. Open C or the bigger machines only two riders achieved ten laps. Nathan Hennefant and Jason Winter were the riders out front. 30C class saw Casey Rick dominate the field, in a big way. His KTM lost a holeshot device right off the line and one wonders how fast he could have gone if he had kept it on? All fun aside. The top 30C class riders will be making great B riders next season... they all had solid rides. The afternoon HS event is a longer, more brutal course. All of rock creek, all of the Ex section, and just under a 100 riders lined up to do battle. They had one heck of a race. AA class names like Kyleer Vance, Ryan Moss, Chase Robinson, Austin Wells, Matt Dissell from D17, and JD Friebel, Eric Mischler, Rory Agnew, and Lucas Agnew from D16. Local favorite Travis Ward is normally the

rider to beat on his home turf, but today started with a second to last place start and he proceed to take his Service Honda to the front by lap three. Moss, Dissell, and Robinson, along with Vance were all in the top three the first part of this race. At one time there was almost the whole AA class in the EX section at the same time! Some choosing to bounce over the logs/tires while others “rode the rail” which has a balance log to ride down to miss those obstacles. A large crowd stood and seen the action as they battled just this one place on the course. Lap four, Ward now in the lead, Vance in second connect with Ward taking a tree at speed. Moss inherits the lead but will soon be displaced by Vance. Friebel is coming, and he is coming strong. JD is best known for his National Enduro racing prowess, and has the stamina of a 17 year old. “I finally got it together later in the race, and figured out where I could make my moves.” Vance was the only rider not to be victim to Friebel and his late race push. The Husqvarna mounted rider was clocked going up rock creek at 23mph! Rock creek, is filled with bowling ball sized rocks, and is about a quarter mile long. This is simply amazing. Ward having endurance issues dropped off the pace, while Dissell ended his day with a popping and failing four stroke. Robinson charged past Moss at the end as well for third. Honorable mention goes to Austin Wells. He started last in this class of speedsters by quite a ways to reel in a solid fifth place and overall. Last mention of this piece, Mason Schuhler, the fourteen year old speedster from Mendota. He started in the little B line on his back up bike, to finish an astounding eighth overall. In two short years this kid will be bangin with the big boys. Last but not least, twenty Quad warriors showed up to compete today, with a large amount of them being new C class riders. Good to see the new blood coming out to try their hand at the off-road scene. Kevin Johnson was there in the +30 class, but had a mechanical which put him out on lap two. Doug Younker bested Jerrod Thomas and Chris Breitwieser in the A class. Brent Coyle won the ten rider C class with Joe Paulson keeping him honest with the only other C rider to do ten laps. Brian Wittersheim, another true Ironman racing bikes and quads today was tired at day’s end. But he still managed to win the +30 class, and Mike (someone stole my quad) Fox rode his first every HS with a big grin all day. Dan Siener likely had his gopro up and going for some fine videos which will be on the website soon! If this kick off of the season is any indication of what is to come in off-road racing this summer, D17 and Fox Valley Off-Road is going to have a ring side seat to some real nice racing and fun. his first Sunday of May marked the opening of Hare Scrambles racing in Minnesota where the entire state was graced with perfect weather for racers and spectators alike. No blizzards, no sideways falling rain, just blue skies, warm sun and light breezes. It might have had something to do with the pair of snow ski’s, the snowmobile and the half dozen hockey sticks that the Norsemen club members gathered up to sacrifice on the starting line of the moto track in a ritual bonfire, in an effort to appease the god of winter, coercing him to release his frigid grip on the Northland for the rest of the season. The turnout for the first Hare Scrambles race of 2014 saw very high numbers. One count tallied up approximately 325 racers and over 800 people through the gates. Starting lines seemed to be bursting at the seams. Several classes appeared to be numbering in the mid thirties. Racers were thankful for the sand laden terrain

that makes up the majority of Isanti County, which is home to The Norsemen MC Club. The weather leading up to the event was ﬁlled with precipitation, and if there were a higher clay content in the soil, that could have made for a real ballyhoo of a race. With the exception of a few select locations, the course was in perfect condition for quick lap times. The talent pool in MN runs deep and racers were chomping at the bit. From several racers that have had the honor of representing the USA in the International Six Day Enduro, and also past National Champions to the young up-n-comers that are wheeling their 50’s, 65’s, and 85cc racers to impressive lap times. There are surely champions to represent Minnesota in future years. The Premier class was the ﬁrst wave out of the chute, to

importantly had fun!” Dirt biking has long been considered a young man’s sport, with riders in their late teens to early twenties being at the peak of their racing careers. No one told the riders in the Senior-A class any of this nonsense. The top riders in class, Jeffrey Young, Pat Adrian and Ralph Feld were laying down lap times that would lay waste to a large majority of off-road racers today. At the end of the ﬁrst lap the order would be Young in sixth place, Adrian in second and Feld in ﬁrst. Each of those riders would have laps where they would top the leader board, but on the lap that

kick off the season. Of the twenty riders on the line, Suzuki RM85 mounted #100 Jack Maki built up a five minute cushion in the first lap. He settled into a groove and held the margin to the finish. He shared the podium spots with second place Devon Jirik while Jarrett Loeqering would bring home the bronze. Next to hit the track was the Macro/ Micro class and the PeeWee riders. In the PeeWee class #434 Joseph Goth piloted his Yamaha to a four plus minute lead at the end of lap one with KTM racing’s Tanner Tommerdahl settling into second place while Aundrea Artmann wheeled her way into third. That would be the finishing order with Goth completing three laps with a time of 59:11. In 250C action, Kawasaki mounted #617 Alex Kulzer caromed his way to the top spot of the twenty-eight rider field while navigating his way about the woods through some rapidly deteriorating bogs, picking the best lines through 54

the sometimes treacherous woods sections. John Cysiewski and Keith Gorton would give chase, but to no avail. Today was Kulzer’s day. Seven quick ladies lined up in the Women’s race. After the 1+ hour of racing, the top four riders were all within three minutes of each other. The race for third place saw the sisters Jordan and Kelsey Grinhaug crossing the checkered ﬂag with a scant twentyeight seconds between them with Jordan claiming the bronze. Up at the front however, Kristi Grote was back to her winning ways. Ms Grote assumed the point on lap one and was never headed, enroute to a two minute twenty second victory over KTM mounted Miranda Tweeton. After the race, Kristi reported that she went into the ﬁrst race pretty nervous, because she hadn’t ridden since she injured her knee. She wasn’t sure how it would hold up. “I had a great ride, I rode well and consistent the whole race. Most

counted, the last lap, Young crossed through the scoring tent on point with Adrian twenty-four seconds after, and Feld, 0.75 later. A close race for sure. In the AA class past D23 Champion Nate Ferderer was up to his old shenanigans again, giving everyone else ﬁts. Ferderer got off the line in last place, but passed all twenty riders by the end of lap one. He was building up a comfortable lead by the one hour mark and while riding through a deep rut in the saturated ground he drug his shifter and got a treeroot lodged around it. After two minutes of frantic wrestling

and insults hurled at the offending tree, it finally released it’s grip on the Gas Gas’s shifter, leaving Nate in third place. While dealing with a pretzeled shifter, Ferderer was able to work his way back up to second place, but by then #94 Kyle Nelson had built up a lead that proved insurmountable. Nelson, “on the start I lined up next to the legend Matt Stavish. He and I were talking that I got the holeshot last year. Well after the gun shot and after the first corner I was able to get the holeshot again this year. I led the first lap until the moto track then Nate was hard on me and my arms were really pumped so I let him by. I kind of slipped back a ways until about the end of the second lap when my arms started to come back. At the end of the second lap I was caught back up to Nate and we both fueled at the same time and I came out right on his rear wheel. About two miles into the third lap we hit a mud hole where Nate went left and I went right, I made it through just fine, that was the last time I saw Nate, or anyone in second place.” In the end, Nelson won by three

minutes, then Ferderer with a very hard charging Matt Stavish, a scant four seconds behind. (Stavish is the owner of Checkpoint Off-Road Products). I asked Nelson how he got into racing? He had this to say, “exactly 20 years ago to the date a great man by the name of Randy Lewis took this young 18 year old rider (me) out of riding in gravel pits and ditches to my ﬁrst race which was Cambridge Hare Scrambles. Randy treated me like I was one of his sons, helped me with my gear, sign up and bike prep. We loaded my bike up into his trailer with his boys’ bikes and headed to Cambridge for this Hare Scramble thing I knew nothing about. When we got there Randy helped me get me and my ‘93 CR125 signed up for 200C class. I was nervous but kind of excited to race, once I started racing it went ok but had no idea how I did. When I was done I told Randy that this racing thing was about the stupidest thing you could do on a Sunday, but once the results came out and showed that I won 200C, my view started to change. By the time we got back to Alexandria I loved racing and

couldn’t wait until the next weekend to try this Enduro thing he was talking about. Since then I haven’t hung up the boots. I really want to thank Randy Lewis for showing me this sport and being a dad to me!” Last year’s champion Dylan Debel was helping staff the event so he was absent from the result sheet, but he promised to be on the line at the next event and to come out swinging! A great big thanks have to go out to all the members of the Norsemen Motorcycle club for putting on the race and in particular, to James Artmann for volunteering to be the trailboss for the event and spearheading the effort. The weekends leading up to the race saw workers clearing trail, building bridges over swamp crossings and building out the Enduro-cross section and mapping out the course during very inclement weather for several weekends in a row. Also, big thanks to Danielle Artmann and the entire Artmann family for contributing countless hours of their time to allow this project to come to fruition. Having helped out on some of these events I can speak from experience. The work it takes to see a race to completion can be staggering. I have said it before and I’ll say it again. “Without volunteers, there can be no racing!” 56

It looked like Jenner was going to repeat his fast time performance in the same manner Sunday, as his 3.094 second winning ride in the 600cc class overtook Wheelwright again, who flew over the top in 3.114 seconds to win the 250cc class. Jared McKay and Dylan Brady were also fast in the 600cc class with rides of 3.119 and 3.134 seconds. But Jenner’s fast time repeat performance was not to be, as Wade Schultz blasted over the top in a breathtaking

he Central Illinois Motorcycle Club started their 2014 season with a double header hillclimb weekend on May 4th and 5th. Levi Peters, Eric Wheelwright, Cody Jenner and Mike Pulver were the most prolific winners. Levi was a triple winner both days, as well as claiming the Youth Fast Time award. In the 85Sr class, his 3.554 second time was good for the win on Saturday night and the Youth Fast Time, Derick Bell was closest to him with a 3.600 second time with Andrew Fortner third. He was even faster Sunday, flying over the top in 3.301 seconds for the win and fast time, with Andrew Fortner close with a 3.320 second time and Reece Hutton third. He was also the winner in the 125cc and 200cc classes both days. Emily Schultz was second in the 125cc class Saturday with Jacob Bell third, while Bell took second Sunday with Schultz third. Morgan Wheelwright and Jacob Bell finished second and third both days in the 200cc class: Eric Wheelwright was a double winner on Saturday and a triple winner Sunday. He claimed wins in the 600cc Four Stroke class and also the Senior class Saturday night.
