CYCLE USA, March 2013
All District Riders: Renew your memberships as soon as you get the opportunity to do so. The Cycle USA magazine is one of your special membership benefits, and only renewed 2013 members will continue to get issues after the first few come out. Also, if you change your address, notify your district association right away. The Loss of AMA District 15 should be a wake up call for us all! District 15 Members may have heard, your district as we have always known it has dissolved. That is a soft way of saying it fell apart. Cycle USA has asked several times for a letter or any sort of explanation from the past leadership to explain everything to you the riders, receiving nothing. The best explanation we can share comes from our modest involvement through our interactions over the twenty plus years we’ve been publishing Cycle USA for the district. District organizations like D15 are made up by area clubs and promoters working together to promote events, for you the riders. These clubs and promoters look for individuals to lead the group as a board of directors. There’s also referees, points keepers, and often legislative representatives to look over state wide legal issues that effect our sport. All these individuals are volunteers, and often if there isn’t a strong source of support for their efforts from the clubs and promoters all working together, the organization will eventually begin to fail. There also has to be new individuals ready to get involved, as everyone has a burn-out factor that will eventually take a toll on a leader’s success. The last several years have been challenging for the group. Clubs and promoters have struggled right along with the rider base. Lower attendance from a crap economy played a big part of the demise. Greed... on the part of a few clubs and promoters surely only made the situation worse. A couple years ago when the largest clubs promoting hare scrambles events decided they didn’t need the district any longer, they broke away and ran their own series of events, essentially crushing the off-road portion of D15.
Announcements, personal stuff, and.... A strong District is only possible when everyone works together. Fixing problems together. There were leadership issues in D15 for sure, and a lot of poor communications that definitely led to the situation. Blaming anyone would be wrong... it was a bad situation and not enough of the right people got involved to make it better, or at least keep it from blowing up. Once the Off-road division of D15 broke away, the group itself began to suffer even more. Less resources, including financial, and a large enough pool of good people to volunteer all the effort to keep D15 viable. District 15 has had some great people put in a ton of effort to make it a success over the many years. There were great clubs, promoters, and most of all loyal riders that joined and supported the district. Regardless of how it all came apart, it is an absolute loss for everyone. Sure there will still be events, but it will absolutely not be the same, or anywhere near as good as it could have been if everyone would have put enough effort into a common cause. Our sport is weaker when we are not organized, and standing together! The biggest thing I have learned from seeing D15 come apart, is the reminder of how fragile our organizations really are. How much they need the support of riders, clubs, promoters, all of us. It is our collective efforts and interest that defines them in the first place. They need riders paying their dues... soliciting new members, and volunteering when possible. Clubs and promoters need to work together and be more involved. At events, or on a district level, everyone needs to be involved! I see this need every day, and still feel the shock of District 15 failing. In the short term, I sure would like to keep Cycle USA going to our past D15 riders. Riders can subscribe directly using the form in the back of this issue, or join AMA District 17 (your neighboring association in IL) for essentially the same price. Cycle USA gets less out of it... but D17 gets the support they need, and in the long run we all are better off with that happening. Stay in touch... pick one of these easy options. T
he Beaver Cycle Club was invited again this year to provide alternate entertainment for the Otter Street Fisheree on Miller’s Bay in Oshkosh, WI. As expected, they did an excellent job. The Beavers put on a full show of twelve classes for the day providing several hours of fast paced entertainment for the crowds. The
weather cooperated with great conditions for the race and the spectators. Temps in the teens with bright sun was perfect. The track held up fine with just a bit of ice dust effecting visibility at times. The only mishap of the day came when a bike’s throttle apparently stuck open at the start. That rider took out two others and one was transported to a local hospital due to injuries from the sharp ice screws in the bikes tires.
Terry Vestahl on his way winning the Twins/Vintage class.

CYCLE USA, March 2013
Brock Schwarzenbacher was the big winner on the day with victories in 450 Pro, Open Pro and the Dash for Cash. Brock was rarely challenged aboard his Revolution Performance, Mellenium Tech, Bell Helmets, Key West Tanning Salon, Any Size Storage sponsored Honda 450. If there was a “Hot Shoe” award, it would have to go to Terry Vestahl on the Red Line Cycles Yamaha in the Vintage/ twins class. Vestahl bogged his bike on the line badly and came off the start dead last. By the time he got going, the rest of the class was already well into turn two. By lap three of the six lap event, Terry was in the lead! From there he continued to pull away for the win. The Otter Street Fisheree is an annual event and the Beaver Cycle Club has been present to stage their races for at least the past ten years, and it always a good time. J
anuary 19th marked the first ever awards banquet for the top 2012 racers for both Motocross and Hillclimb at Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club. It was a packed house at Wolf Creek golf club with close to 150 in attendance, and the energy in the room was great. The invited racers were awarded with custom, personalized plaques from Trak Plaks for first overall, and the top three qualified racers in each class went home with a custom designed Championship Points Series t-shirt. Plaques and shirts were not the only items handed out on this night, as many of the

series sponsors provided great give away items as well. ShopBigwheel.com provided several shirts, backpacks, sticker kits and more. Earl Gaudio and Sons provided several Monster Energy items, including a One Industries Monster Energy signature helmet. Sportland Motorsports provided shirts, EVS provided several safety related items and discount coupons. The team at Action Sports EMS provided two helmet eject systems and Pleasure Riders provided several free gate passes and free race coupons. Literally everyone in attendance went home with some sort of free item. On this night to celebrate racer accomplishments, the top award winner was non other than 2013 District 17 Hillclimb director, Matt Peters. Matt walked away with three overall series championships. His accomplishments included 250cc, 450cc and +40 hillclimb championships. The racer on this night earning the most top three awards was mini racer, Derrick Bell. Derrick went home with four different award honors by finishing second overall in 65cc Hillclimb and 65Sr. MX. Derrick also finished third overall in 85Jr Hillclimb and MX. He was one of a handful of racers that participated in both MX and Hillclimb throughout the year and for 2013, Pleasure Riders will have a bonus built into the championship series for those who participate in both. Pleasure Riders also honored top overall series winners for youth MX and Hillclimb, and top amateur MX and Hillclimb. Those winners were

The team at Pleasure Riders also celebrated the life of fellow racer and series +55 MX champion Hank Whitmarsh with a moment of silence to kick off the awards ceremony. Hank and his wife Jean were great additions to the long list of racers at Pleasure Riders in 2012, and he passed away in late in the season attending the sport that he loved in a non track related incident. Hank and his family will definitely be missed. Other highlights from the night were the announcement of the 2013 Championship Points Series for both MX and Hillclimb with ShopBigwheel.com as the title sponsor for both. They will be providing racers throughout the year with several thousand dollars of Fly Racing bucks which will definitely help racers. Other big sponsor announcements were the addition of No Toil and DeCal Works just to name a few. Perhaps the biggest announcement was of the 2013 ILLINI Super series sponsored by ShopBigwheel.com, Action Sports EMS, Pleasure Riders MC and Lincoln Trail Motorsports. The series will consist of eight races beginning Memorial Day weekend. The top overall points earner will walk away with a custom prepared Kawasaki KLX 110 pitbike! Two of the races will be double
points, and Yamaha or Kawasaki contingency will be offered at seven events. All in all, this series has the makings to be great. Pleasure Riders MC thanked all of the racers, all of the families and all of the sponsors that made 2012 the best year ever at the club. They will be kicking off the 2013 season on April 13th with a double day MX and on April 27th with a double day Hillclimb. Crossroads MX Banquet Effingham, Illinois - January 21
C
rossroads MX hosted the annual track awards banquet on January 21st for all winners of the CRMX track series, The Illini Super Series and MotoX Outcasts ATV Series. All racers were greeted at the door with a goodie bag filled with items from sponsors as well as a coffee cup with a racer’s picture on it. During the next hour, they had to find the rightful owner of the coffee cup, and trade cups until they got their own cup. This was a great way to meet fellow racers, and get everyone socializing. CWIRA opener a blast! Fremont, Wisconsin - January 6
F
or those riders that wait all year looking forward to ice racing, the first weekend of January couldn’t come soon enough in Central Wisconsin. That’s because it marked the opening weekend of the 2013 Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association’s season, and a great weekend it was. In the life of an ice racer, the two-month season is already short enough... add in some bad (good to most of us) weather with warm temps, a lot of snow or even rain, and it can get depressing real quick. Unlike last year’s record warmth, this winter was looking pretty traditional...
maybe even better as the cold temps arrived on time, and the lack of early snowfall let the ice really develop well. Fremont, Wisconsin’s shallow Partridge Lake played host to round one. Saturday offered a non-points warm up race. Attendance was down, a sign that a lot of the racers are just not traveling twice in one weekend, or willing to pony up the extra expense of a motel and dining. Sunday’s opening points race was a different story as nearly 200 hundred entries were listed by the end of practice, and the season was off to a great start! Near perfect ice, mostly sunny skies and mild temps all added to the happy faces through-

out the pits. The GP racing started the day... with the mix of right and left hand corners vs the traditional oval. To no surprise the #29 Kawasaki mounted John Strangfeld launched off the line and into the quick lead in the Pro/Am class. Half way through the opening lap, Oak Creek, WI’s Adam Bushman climbed up to Strangfeld’s rear fender, and the race was on. Two laps of fender to fender was enough for Bushman as he took a chance on an outside line to pull enough speed through a following section and take the lead. As they held position, Dave Wappler rode well for third just ahead of David Zawistowski. Bushman had a clear line into turn one in the second moto and then led Strangfeld each lap for the sweep and overall. Having a better start this time, Ian Malinowski finished third, improving on his first moto fifth. Wappler was fourth, all he needed for third overall in the GP class. The Amateur GP class was big enough to run heat races where the top finishers would use a main later to decide the overall. In the first heat it was Jesse Leu having made the trip over from Wausau that led from start to finish. Tim May ran a comfortable second while Corey Schroeder had his hands full all race with Travis Leu pushing him. In the second heat, Mitchell Leu came from third to

lead in less than a lap while Kevin Weivoda followed early leader Mike Trulen across the line at the end. In the GP final, Jesse Leu left no doubt that this was all about him winning, as he took the lead in the first turn and never looked back. May was running in second all the way to the white flag lap, when Mitchell Leu’s ongoing efforts to make a pass finally paid off. Leu tucked under May in one of the last tight corners and a few seconds later he crossed the line in second. Parker Lange held on for fourth ahead of Mike Trulen. The Quad GP class saw Dj Schultz take the early lead, getting pushed really hard by Dustin Hoffman and Graham Eichmiller. Just before the end of the second lap, Schultz made a mistake with a little help from Hoffman and went wide into a snow
bank to drop back a couple spots. Hoffman had Eichmiller rubbing him all the way to the end, but held on for the win. As a start is so important in GP Quad racing, there was a lot of contact through the first couple corners in the second moto. Coming out on top was Hoffman with Eichmiller and Schultz settling for second and third. As Schultz fell back just a bit through the laps. Eichmiller never gave Hoffman a chance to catch his breath, and pushed him hard right to the end as they took the checkered flag. Shaun Winkler and Aaron Pavechek finished in fourth and fifth. On the Oval course, once again John Strangfeld jumped to a three bike lead into the first corner of the Open Pro Motorcycle class. Bushman quickly worked by a couple riders in the opening lap. Running in second, Bush-
Ian Malinowski finished third in the 450 Pro class.
man pushed for a chance at the lead that finally came on the fourth lap as he got under Strangfeld. It seemed like Bushman was on a mission, and destined to have a big day as he rode out front for the win. Mark Will and Mark Muth beat on each other each lap before finishing third and fourth ahead of Mike Mueller. The second moto was the closest Pro race I’ve seen in a while. Strangfeld jumped into the lead with Marky Will second while Bushman ran in third. They held those spots until the halfway mark when they tighten up, and you just knew something was going to happen. Will was the first to make a dash as he got by Strangfeld to lead. With a lap to go they were essentially on top of each other, and Bushman tossed caution aside, charging hard into turn three under the white flag. Coming out of four, Bushman pulled a slight half bike advantage on both Will and Strangfeld, passing them both just before the line. It was a great race for sure! Bushman also won both rounds of the 450 Pro class. In the first moto Ian Malinowski beat Russell Bradley across for second. Marky Will came back after dnf’ing the first race to finish second in moto two ahead of Bradley while Malinowski settled for fourth. Bradley’s 3-3 was good for second overall. The Open Pro Quad class had familiar riders in contention on the Oval as well. Schultz led the first lap before Eichmiller simply dove into his line in turn three of the second lap. As they held there own, coming from way back in the pack was Hoffman.
Graig Melville made his pass into second with two laps to go, and Hoffman eventually clawed his way to third in the last lap, just having enough time to pass Schultz. Hoffman wasn’t going to start in the pack a second time, and when the second moto started he pulled just enough of a gap down the long start area to have a clear view around the first couple turns. Meanwhile, first moto winner Eichmiller was back in third, but quickly getting by Schultz for second in turn three. Eichmiller did everything he could to force an error by Hoffman, but it didn’t happen. Hoffman won the moto, but his 3-1 was only good for second overall behind Eichmiller’s 1-2 motos. Schultz finished a solid third ahead of Melville in the moto. Melville’s first round second place secured him third overall though. The Open B motorcycle class had a dozen riders, so they ran heats before a final main. The heats help determine starting positions in the main, so you want a good finish here as well. The first heat needed several re-starts to get everyone on the same page, and it was Kenosha, WI’s Rick Rozinski just edging out Kawasaki rider Mitchell Leu. The second heat had more close racing as Dave Wappler held the lead each lap, as Green Bay’s Tim May tried every line possible to make a move, coming close over and over before the checkered flag came out. Mike Trulen finished back just a few feet in third. With everything on the line in the final, Tim May pulled a good start to lead Mitchell Leu, Wap-

pler and Rozinski through the first lap. Wappler looked like he was having a hard time holding the inside line, and Rozinski slid by for third in the second lap. About the same time, Leu managed his way past May for the lead, and then ran out front to take the win. Rozinski spent the rest of the race trying to get around May, finally finding his way around in the last lap for second. Mitchel Rush also made use of the last lap on his KTM to pass Wappler for fourth. We’ve said it before... some of the most exciting racing comes from the ATV Rubber (non-studded) classes, and while today’s racing was tame compared to some days, it was still a great show. Heat one of the Outlaw Rubber class had the always fast Dan Lindner take the holeshot ahead of Scott Davis and Dustin White. Coming ino the third turn on the second lap, White found a good line and went under Davis for second as Lindner ran his own pace with about a ten foot advantage to win. Louis Plaskey found some extra traction off the start and never let go of the lead in heat two. Jeremy Flees, Kyle Krasselt and Nick Nett filled the top four. In the final, Lindner had a battle in the first lap but then Plaskey ran into problems and dropped back into the pack and that left Flees with the best shot at Lindner. Flees was fast, but Lindner having an open track is nearly unstoppable... and he slowly pulled away for the victory. Davis worked up to third Mason Barth in the Junior motorcycle class
quickly where he finished ahead of Bobby Fedrowitz. The opener had the special feeling it should... racing, a new season kicking off, and a lot of familiar faces. Everyone we saw looked happy to be on the ice, and eager to make the most of it. Bostrom Brothers win Larson Memorial
The John Larson Memorial race gets underway. #1 Jake Bostrom set a torrid pace that eventually earned him and his brother Erick the Overall win.
Rush City, Minnesota - February 3 By Tim McBride
F
or the fourth time, the Bostrom brothers Erick and Jake brought home the premier “Heavy 250 Plus Division” Overall Championship Trophy during this year’s running of the John Larson Memorial endurance ice race held at Flikabird’s Resort located on the shores of Rush Lake. Through the efforts of the Boehlke and Larson family
as well as several other unsung volunteers, twenty-nine race teams made up from seventy-five riders gathered to pay tribute to long time ice racer John Larson. The rules were kept simple. Up to four riders and only two bikes per team were allowed. At the end of three hours the team finishing with the highest number laps was declared the winner. However, only one number plate per team was handed out at the riders sign up table. It was the competitors’ duty
to swap the front number plate while switching machines. This was done so scoring could be done properly. Scoring twenty-nine bikes on the track at the same time for three hours straight had to be a daunting task in itself, but Bayley Boehlke was up to the task. The 1.8 mile course featured a multitude of right and left turns that certainly challenged all of the riders, and the chilly temperatures that remained in the teens throughout the day tested their true grit as well.

Renewed Arenacross Series By Josh Rud www.ShiftOnePhotography.com
T
he Arenacross series is all new this year, with tons of changes and new faces making their name out there. To start off with the race format is much shorter with only ten rounds, but more Friday and Saturday events with a total of sixteen races. This year Ricky Carmichael has thrown his hat in the ring to help revive the series, and breathe some new life into Arenacross. The addition of Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross is now making the only way to get your pro endorsement into Supercross by achieving Road to Supercross points from racing the Arenacross series. In order to get one point you need to qualify for the main event in the Arenacross class three times, from there you need to get three Road to Supercross points to get your Pro endorsement. So at the very least you will need to race nine arenacross races in order to get into Supercross starting in 2014.
I feel this is a good thing for everyone, getting your pro card for racing Lorettas and going straight to Supercross might work for some, but Arenacross will be a much better path to get a good feel for the different environment of racing tight and technical indoor series. Having Carmichael involved has helped the series a ton with more media taking notice of what is going on, and in the Complete Engine Services long run will only help •Cylinder Boring & Sleeving the series to gain more •Head & Cylinder Porting support and popularity. •Crank Work/ Rebuilding The race format •Complete 2 & 4 Stroke Servicing has changed significantly from last year to make things more interesting. The biggest being splitting the old Arenacross class main event from the twenty four laps it once was, Full Suspension Services into two separate •Complete Service forks and shocks twelve lap main events. •Suspension Lowering These races score separate points with a •Valving & Repair chance for an inversion between the two races. with three suitcases. Each suitcase contains a number zero, eight, or sixteen. If you draw the zero the race order does not change and you get your first gate pick. If the eight is selected the top eight inverts giving the rider in eighth place the first gate pick. If the sixteen is selected the entire field inverts giving the winner of the first race the last gate pick. This brings some interesting racing to the table with the winner of the first race having to start on the back row because Arenacross has two rows of eight instead of a wide sixteen gate start. I saw several times where Tyler Bowers would pick the eight and instead of starting on the outside with a chance of getting pushed wide into the wall he would start on the inside back row. The Dash for Cash has been replaced with head to head bracket racing. I personally enjoy this much better. The top four from both heats in the Arenacross class go head to head for a two lap sprint with the winner moving on to the next bracket. The overall winner receives one championship point they can either use towards their point total, or their overall for the night, possibly moving them into first place overall between the two motos. The biggest change just went into effect in round seven in Arkansas, The Race to the Championship. After round six the top ten were locked in and their points totals were dropped with first place keeping six points, second- five, third and fourth keeping four, fifth and sixth keeping three, seventh and eighth keeping two, and ninth and tenth keeping one. This has everyone starting basically CYCLE USA, March 2013 31
from scratch for the last four rounds which has five remaining races. Everyone has mixed reactions about the change. Tyler Bowers being in a large lead is hurt the most by this as he told me “It kinda defeats the point of a championship, you work your butt off all year and come into the season prepared, only to have to start off at square one”. One of our local District 17 riders Kyle White out of Freeport IL was also affected. He was battling to get into the top ten spot for the last couple rounds, tied with Dave Ginolfi. He was unable to get an edge up on him so now the best he is able to achieve this year is eleventh place. Speaking with White he was taking it as a good experience and focusing the energy on working harder for next year. Speaking of Kyle White, riding with Team BWR are some of the guys out their every weekend pushing on the privateer life style, packing all their riders and bikes in the moto-van and showing up at every round... putting down some really good competition. Brian White handling the mechanic duties of all four bikes and running his shop during the week is showing some amazing dedication to Maxx Malatia, Kyle White, and Adam Berg all out of Illinois and Colton Hildreth out of Iowa. Malatia is sitting in third for west coast lites, White is in fifth, he missed a race while concentrating his efforts on grabbing the top ten in the Arenacross class. for TZR and Woodstock KTM has made a great showing this year, taking third place in points in the East coast lites championship. Vaughn Mays out of Genoa City, WI on his Southeast Sales KTM was making a great effort in the East coast lites, having some issues making it to the rest of the rounds, but still able to pull off seventh overall after missing several races. I also caught up with a very local rider to me, Jon Williams coming out there starting early trying to get his road to Supercross points. The first event he made it out to he ran into a mechanical failure and
didn’t make it out of practice. He made it back to Little Rock, again suffering mechanical difficulties. Another Midwest rider I caught up with was Zach Williams out of Elko Minnesota. He came out to race round five in Texas to get ready for his West coast lites Supercross ride he just picked up with MUNN racing. He was the winner at Lorretta Lynns this year and had never ridden indoors before. He wanted to get some seat time in the indoor environment and get used to his new KTM ride. We sat down after practice to talk.
Scott and Tom Zont of TZR.
Williams, “this is great, I’ve been practicing at supercross tracks and it’s been great to come out and actually get some racing in. It’s really tight out there and a great experience. Outdoors was good this year, I got a Lorretta’s title which was a long time coming. I raced Lake Elsinore which was my first outdoor national. Had some problems there, my gas actually boiled and I had to pull off. Oh well it was just a learning experience, I was able to get up into the top twenty. I wasn’t ex-

pecting much, but this year I feel is going to be a much better. The new team has been great and the KTM is really cool. I went down for the tryouts this summer and they liked what they saw. They have a full race bike for me for Supercross and outdoors so I’m looking forward to the support and having a great year.” As for my experience... covering the entire series this year has been a great, getting know a lot of people as we move from town to
town every weekend, putting on a great show for the fans. At the time I’m writing this I’m getting ready to leave in the morning for Wichita Kansas which will be round eight, starting to wind the series down to a close. The final race will take place in Colorado, and I hope that next year will show even more improvements to the series and more riders will be out there competing to get their points to move on into Supercross.

Bloomington Championship ICE Racing Bloomington, Illinois - January 12 By James Pinckard
R
ound five of the 2013 World Championship ICE Racing Series slid into Bloomington, IL at the awesome US Cellular Coliseum. A full house of fans and racers were treated to some very exciting racing. With the most riders of any event this season and only a select few spots for the main event available, the heat races were very aggressive. With many of the riders straight from the national short track and flat track series, these guys and are the best at what they do. This year the addition of the Stunt Riders team- two guys on sport bikes doing tricks on the ice, made for an even more entertaining show. The World Cup Bikes have two rounds of heats, taking eight riders to the main event. With banging, bumping, and trading spots, every heat was full of action. At the end of the first round of heats Jared Mees and Kirk Cheney were the winners. The second round of heats went again to Mees and Cheney allowing them to send a clear message to the others, we are fast. Tom McGrane took the LCQ win with a powerful performance leading every lap to set up a great main event. With the crowd on their feet, the eight riders launched into the first turn with Cheney leading the pack. Mess was in second for a lap and a half before moving under Cheney taking the lead. Position changes weren’t done yet though as Maloney moved into second. McGrane took over hounding Cheney, looking for a way around. Late in the race he

found what he was looking for and slid past Cheney into third, grabbing the last podium spot. Mees took the win with Maloney second and the fans on the edge of their seats! The Pit bikes are always fun and to the roar of the crowd, Matt Guderjan took the win. Another class that is a hoot is the Scooter class, who get no screws for their tires! Plus tonight there was a special guest on the ice, the Easter Bunny, and he was riding double. In the end Dillion Overman took the win.
Very funny and it is all about entertainment! The Pro Quad class is exciting and the racers had their machines ready for action. The heat races showed that the win was wide open on this night. Heat wins went to Chuck Calvert, Dusty Crouch, Kevin Veon, Mandy Brodil, Ryan Kaufman, Anthony Demeo, and Todd McGuire. Any one of these guys were capable of winning the main. In the main, multi time champion Mandy (Wild Child) Brodil pulled the holeshot and looked to have everything under control. She was on her way to what looked like an easy win, and then she spun. When she did Dusty Crouch said thank you and moved into the lead. With it bei-ng the last lap Brodil charged but Crouch had the lines covered and took the win. Ryan Kaufman finished third. What a race! The Ice Breaker Amateur Quads are a crowd favorite. With only a few screws per tire, traction was very hard to get for these guys and it showed. After heat races every quad there lined up for the main, and it was a riot! There were so many crashes and spins it was hard to keep track of everything. One thing that was obvious was the smiles on both the riders and fans face alike. When the rotating demo derby came to a stop the cheers of the crowd continued proving how entertaining the night had all been. Results: Pro Bikes: 1.Jared Mees 2.Jay Maloney 3.Tom McGrane 4.Kirk Cheney 5.Bryan Mckenna 6.Shea Knuth 7.Brittney Powell 8.Darren Carter Pro Quad: 1.Dusty Crouch 2.Mandi Brodi 3.Ryan Kaufman 4.Kevin Veon 5.Kevin Smith

2012 WFO Promotions Banquet Geneseo, Illinois - November 24th By Kylie Kelsall
A
s another great WFO season came to an end, the annual banquet was held at The Moose Lodge in Geneseo, IL to congratulate and crown the riders. The banquet started at 6pm, giving the families time to catch up and talk about what they will be doing during this long off season. Ron Whipple and Stan Redell hosted the 2012 banquet with much help from the staff. Once dinner came to a close, announcements and award presentation began. Ron started with announcing big news for the upcoming season. He explained how this year Plainview will be hosting a National Hare Scramble Race. The races will be extended to
Saturday and Sunday, plus C class riders will ride for two hours and A riders will ride for three. This will give riders even more time on this amazing track. A track many of the riders favored in the 2012 season. Points will be raised for this event as well. The WFO team hopes to see all of the riders there, so keep this race in mind. The next portion of the night consisted of handing out awards to the top placing riders. Ron interviewed the riders on the podium asking them what track they liked the most, how their season went, who they would like to thank, and lastly if they would be with us again next year. Many of the riders liked racing Plainview most, so it seems fitting that a National will take place there. As the season went on, some riders got injured and most came back from adversity to succeed in their class, saying regardless they had a terrific season. Riders thanked family, friends, and mechanics for always believing in them, and buying all of the equipment needed for this sport. Not only did the riders thank family but they also thanked the WFO team and for putting on great races and making it as fun as possible for them. WFO would like to give a large thank you to the generous land owners who let them use their property. Also all of its sponsors including; JC's ATVs, Springfield Armory, G2, Funmart Cycle Center, Quad Cities Quad Doctor, Progrip, Fly Racing, and Raelyn's Pub and Eatery.

LTM’s 2012 Awards Banquet Casey, Illinois - January 20 By Nick Jeremy Photos courtesy of Phyllis Blume Photography

his Sunday marked the end of the 2012 racing season for Lincoln Trail Motosports, and the many riders competing throughout the year. The riders participating in the 2012 LTM Track Championship, the Fly Racing Showdown Series and the Woods Warrior Triple Crown, along with their families, were treated to unique awards, awesome prizes and great food. Richards Farm Restaurant hosted this great event, as they have for many years, and provided first class service including a full wait staff, excellent buffet and a cash bar. After a brief introduction by the afternoon’s emcee, Katie Venetis, some brief words by the track owners, Tim and Drew Jackson, and a special awards presentation by Ryan McClintock of Action Sports EMS, it was time to dive into some of the great giveaways. “We had a lot of really great people step up this year and provide giveaways for the event, I really want to thank, WPS, Fly Racing, Action Sports EMS, Shopbigwheel.com, CW Motorsports, BELL Helmets, LTM Supply, ATVs and More, EVS, Club 57 MX Schools, FMF, KALI Protective, Phyllis Blume Photography, Mattoon Kawasaki Yamaha, Weber Bros. With three different race series’, the overall amateur and youth champion awards and the signature Lincoln Trail Motosports sweatshirts, the crew pulled out all the stops this year. After the awards were handed out for each respective series, the 2012 Overall Youth and Amateur Track Champions were crowned. The overall champions were awarded with unique five foot wooden trophies and free gate passes for the 2013 season. Taking the cake in the Youth Division was 50Sr and 65Jr rider Caiden Gerling. The Amateur Division overall champion was multi-class Vet rider, Gary Adams. Both these riders showed speed and consistency throughout the year, and bested their competitors on more than one occasion. “I want to congratulate all the 2012 award winners. I look forward to the 2013 season and seeing everyone ‘battle it out’ during the Fly Racing Showdown Series, AMA Pro-Am events and the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier this year” stated owner Tim Jackson. 2013 is sure to be an exciting year for LTM and with all the great competition in store; it will definitely be interesting to see who will get crowned overall champion this sea- Gunner Cline with his award for second place in the Woods Warrior championship. son. D16 Banquet, Great Again! Wisconsin Dells, WI - November 10, 2012
G
It helps having a fellow rider involved in the marketing end of the company (Tyler Hartmann), but it turned out to be a great connection for everyone involved. DOC360 product was on hand for everyone to take home. There was a very cool DOC360 photo/ podium area that riders and their families took advantage of all night long. Drawings for everyone, and the top motocross riders were given a set of graphics, personalized shirts and more as part of the sponsorship. Their efforts
ood Banquets deliver special times... and for a lot of reasons! First, you have a couple hundred people get together, and they all love this sport of racing motorcycles or atv’s. It doesn’t matter if you are a fifty year old dirt tracker, or a six year old motocross kid... this common interest is huge. We all come together for a year-end banquet to celebrate another season passing, and recognize those among us who have had successful runs in the chase for year-end points. The racing may be done, but this is another chance to get with friends and our extended family. It has been a couple years now since the District 16 board members moved the banquet to the Kalahari Resort The 50Jr MX winners. in the Wisconsin Dells. This decision didn’t come easy as everyone involved knew it was more expensive for our fellow riders... from the dinners, to the lodging. The goal was to give everyone a destination... a family oriented fun place to spend the weekend, and since the first year here, it has been nothing but a successful move. This year had even more riders and family members attending the dinner, and the awards ceremony. Tweaks were made to the program again this year, and they all worked well. The entire experience of coming to a banquet is suppose to be special, and it was once again. The resort is an excellent host, Two pit bikes were given away! and with the guidance of Erin Aune as were a huge boost to the overall feel of the banquet chairperson, the weekend was about night, and appreciated by all! as good as it gets. was a good thing for a few that Saturday morning’s meetings started a little later than years past. Saturday meetings get all the divisions together, and work on everything else for the season is taken care of in time to jump into helping host the banquet - the beginning of the really enjoyable portion of the weekend. The District board members and leaders are all volunteers, and we will have a couple new dedicated individuals going into 2013. President Ron Blazek turned leadership over to Wisconsin Rapids’ Todd Ellingson. This opened the door for a new person to join the board, and well known Joe Stoppleworth is our new Vice President. Pete Laubmeier (Enduro Ref) and John Archer (Trials Ref) also turned over the reins this season. Curt Shomberg, and Trials Ref Dave Schigoda are taking over. All the support these outgoing individuals have given us has made District 16 better, and we thank them for that huge gift of time and energy! Welcome everyone new... and thank you for stepping up and joining the rest of the group that is continuing on in the often under appreciated board. So much good happens in our sport because of these individuals! The weekend and banquet was a huge success, again! We were happy to many long time riders return with their families... it is often a tradition that we all look forward to, a tradition of spending this second weekend of November together. Just as special, was seeing how many new families were at the banquet for their first time. Talking with many of them, they couldn’t believe how “big” the entire weekend was. From how many people were attending, to the banquet itself. They all were impressed, and glad to have joined in on it all. We are happy to have them as well. You don’t have to be getting one of the beautiful awards or a jacket to attend the banquet. If you have friends in the sport as we’re sure you do, just plan to include this weekend in you schedule next year. Come celebrate everything, break bread, and party with everyone. It is a great time that continues well into the morning hours of the next day... be it in the pools and game rooms with the kids, or the wild and fun Kahunaville night club... it is all a great time you shouldn’t be missing!
