CYCLE USA, March 2009
From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It has been a long off season this year mostly because the snow and cold came early and it seems as though it may stay awhile longer. I hope you have been training for the upcoming season as it is just around the corner. There are few items I would like to update our members on as the season begins. We will be running our Youth classes. I know there are parents wondering about this in light of the ruling by the CPSC. I have to tell you I was sorely disappointed by the Factory’s response to this ruling. Considering that the ruling most likely is not legal, is not in keeping with the intent of the law as it was written, and in all reality not enforceable (not to mention totally unconstitutional) why did they react the way they did. Is it any wonder we are always fighting political battles. Our own industry leaders won’t stand up for us, we are left to do it all on our own. The rule does not say a child younger than 13 can’t ride, it says they can not be sold the vehicle or parts for the vehicle. In looking at the list of exemptions which includes such things as athletic equipment, playground equipment, and bicycles, how on earth could a small motorcycle be on the ban list. Personal agenda is how. This issue goes back to the mid eighties when the CPSC went after all the 3 wheelers and youth 4 wheelers. They were not able to abolish them totally at that time so they are using this piece of legislation as a means to do it now. The agency will cite the law but the reality is this is a personal agenda within the CPSC. The machines can be sold to adults if the machine is not to be used by a child under 13. So parents will have to lie and we will see a huge surge in off shore parts businesses. Is it any wonder that I am so cynical about our broken political system. Other changes for the year include a second class for the 65cc racer, we will now have a 65cc 7-8, 910, and 7-11. This allows the racer two classes without having to own two bikes. We will now also have now have a + 55 and + 60 class in MX. There were very few changes in the off-road segment, the Hill climbers will now be able to use a bike in more than one class. There were a few changes to the Flat track rules, the major one being the institution of sound testing and enforcement of the current AMA sound level. Our Quad MX had a scoring change which should help on those occasions where a DNF or DNS bites the racer. The scores will be based on a max gate of 20 racers, not 40 as in MX bikes. We had a comprehensive budget meeting on Saturday February 21st. The outlook for 2009 is less overall income and the budget has been set to reflect that. Sponsorship is becoming harder and harder to come by so we will keep you informed of those sponsors we do pick up. Please make sure you support the sponsors that we have. Lastly and most importantly, this years marks our 40th Anniversary. 1969 was the inaugural year for ARMCA. We have had new logos made to mark the occasion. The logo was designed by Allison Larson who won a free membership for her entry. Thanks Allison for a great logo. We also have instituted a Lifetime Achievement Award. 2009 is the first year that you can nominate someone for this award. The requirements are 30 years as a member of ARMCA
Announcements, personal stuff, and....
D23, with 15 of those years dedicated to serving the membership as a board member, or event promoter. We have some of our founders that are still members and still promoting events. This is the time to recognize those people. If you know someone that you feel has earned this honor please submit the and name and your reason to the district office: Attention Membership Committee. Lets take this opportunity to recognize our long standing contributing members with this honor. If you haven’t already written and called your Senator and Representative on the youth ban, do so now. Let them know how wrong this is. I hope to see you soon on the tracks and trails of Minnesota. Mike Lead, Youth and Dirt Bikes. Youth events will be held in District 16 for 2009. You may have heard that the CPSC has banned the sale of dirt bikes and ATVs to anyone under 12. We and the AMA are fighting the ruling. Please note that the ruling does NOT prohibit the use of existing dirt bikes. So races that have Youth classes can and will be held in 2009. Ken Schuck, D16 President URGENT: Call to action for ALL riders and family members As you have most likely heard, on February 10th, a new law called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act went into effect. This law was created by Congress last August as a reaction to hazardous toys being imported from China. It bans all products sold for use by children which contain above certain levels of lead and phthalates. As rediculous as it may be, all minibikes and pitbikes fall under this act, as well as ATV's sold for youths. As of today, motorcycle and ATV manufacturers have instructed their dealers to remove all bikes and ATV's used by children from inventory and to cease selling these products. The lead contained in these bikes is not in the paint; it's in the metal used for certain parts. Most dealers have also been instructed to stop selling parts for the bikes. What can you do about this? We all need to band together, not just one representative of the family, but Mom, Dad, sister, brother...everyone! There are a number of links floating around for sending letters, perhaps the easiest is at: www.tomself.com. Every member of your family who is a citizen must be encouraged to send in this letter. This is a huge threat to our sport! Employment opportunities: Service technician. RTR Cycles Yamaha KTM seeks professional mechanic. New air conditioned building. Must have dealership experience in street motorcycles and sportbikes, off-road, and ATVs with vast knowledge, quality workmanship, initiative, and good communication skills. Top pay for top performer. Sales and Parts. Dealership experience preferred. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, follow through, self motivation, and the ability to earn respect from our customers is required. Central Illinois between Chicago and St. Louis. Call Rick (309) 444-8109.
District 15 Hare Scrambles: By David Dunnuck There are several changes to the D15 rules associated with D15 Hare Scrambles. Points paying classes: There are key changes in the displacement criteria for the light and heavy classes. Keeping in line with AMA rules, D15 will no longer differential between 2 and 4 stroke machines. The light class is limited to 86-200cc displacement machines while the Heavy class will include all machines 201ccOpen: Light Wt A, 86-200cc, Light Wt B, 86200cc, Heavy Wt A, 201cc-Open, Heavy Wt B, 201cc-Open. Mini Quad classes have been newly defined this season to follow the AMA youth class structure. Year End Awards: Hare Scramble year-end awards will be based on rider’s best fifteen finishes of the H/S events scheduled for the year. Rider Advancement: Any rider with an average of 21 or higher will be advanced. However, a rider must finish in the top three (3) of their class in at least three (3) events to be considered for advancement. A minimum of five (5) class participants in an event is required for points and position to count advancement. Entry in the “C” class is limited to first year H/S competitors only. Riders who have achieved “A” status in another division of District 15 competition are not eligible to enter the “C” class, even if they have never entered H/S competition previously. All “C” class participants will be advanced to the next level immediately following the conclusion of the season. No petitions will be accepted. Visit www.amadistrict15.org for a complete listing of all D15 supplemental rules. D16 Hare Scrambles Update By Brian Terry, D16 HS Ref. The new scoring system is on its way. For those that do not know, we will be using Moto Tally (www.mototally.com) to score all of the district events in 2009. It is a transponder system that has been used for the last two years on the National Enduro Series, and was developed for the Black Jack HS and Enduro series in Oklahoma. It uses an antenna to score the laps, so the riders will not need to stop to get scanned, but will have to ride through the antenna single file. What does this mean for the riders? Well you
will have to buy a transponder, or rent one the day of the event. The preliminary cost is $20 to buy it or $5/ event to rent it with a $20 deposit. This is a one time cost and the transponder is good as long as we use the system, or you lose it. In addition to quick results at the track, the system will be programmed to calculate the class points when the results are uploaded, so in most cases, you will be able to see the results and updated points by the time you get home from the race. Another feature of the system is that there will be a display beyond the antenna that will display your current position in your class as well as how far behind you are from the next rider in your class. I am hoping that most riders will purchase their transponders before the first race to keep the sign up line going. In addition, sign up will close 30 minutes before each race so the data from the sign up computer can be downloaded to the scoring computer. The transponder order form can be found at www.amadistrict16.com. The first event of the year will be at Arkansas MX, and will be a D16 & D23 points paying event. D23 will be scoring the event and uses a bar code system. Bar code stickers will be supplied to D16 riders at no charge. In order to keep the event organized, D23 will be scoring the event and all riders will need a bar code. I will also have our scoring antenna set up to score the D16 riders only. This way, the I will be able to post the D16 results that night. The second event will be at Pearson, WI. I hope that everyone will put this one on your list to attend as we will be having the hare scrambles on Saturday, and an enduro on Sunday at the same location. We will be running the enduro with the restart format, so no special time keeping equipment will be needed. This would be a great opportunity for anyone interested in trying an enduro to do so, and it should be a great weekend of riding. As always, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me. Brian Terry All District Members. A reminder to all the Cycle USA readers that get the magazine as part of your membership with one of the sponsoring districts... renew your memberships early to assure you don’t miss any of the Spring issues. The April issue will be the last you receive if you have not yet renewed.

Cycle USA makes another big change! Last year we made the huge improvement to an all glossy, full color publication. It may not have been the wisest move considering the economy, but looking back, and knowing now how well the upgrade was received by everyone, it was the right thing to do. Our sport is an exciting one... and the goal of Cycle USA has always been to help capture some of those moments we all experience at events, and help record them for all to enjoy. Over and over again we hear from riders that have been saving copies for years. With last year’s enhancement, Cycle USA became even more of a keepsake. Now we have made a change to a smaller, even more convenient size. With last year’s new format, we quickly heard that the smaller size was appreciated, this takes that one step further. Cycle USA will now fit right in along with any of your other magazines. All the color, and quality continues, and this format will make it easier for us to include additional pages when the opportunity comes up. An example, is the new “My Photo” pages. We want to kick this new feature off right away, the “MyPhoto” page, or even better yet, a group of these pages. This is your opportunity to submit a cool photo, and have a good chance of it getting published. We’re thinking photos that capture a truely memorable moment... someone with their first trophy, or a group photo of you and all your pit buddies. It could be a really cool photo from a mud race you just happened to get. Maybe there’s a track worker that has never really been noticed, but deserves to be, and you get a photo of them flagging or whatever. An off-road ride with a couple friends, and you get a cool shot together in some scenic setting. Perhaps a really good action shot, just good old racing stuff. They don’t have to be on the track photos... people having a good time together at the events is great. Nothing obscene, but be creative and have fun. Clear, close, and good photos work. Send your “high-resolution” photo to myphoto@cycleusa.com. Include a note describing the image, the who, where and when along with your name. Editors decisions are final, but we’ll include everything possible. CYCLE USA, March 2009 5
Povolny Perfect at the Sandbox Amsoil Sandbox Arena: New Richmond, Wisconsin - December 13 By Michael Anderson
T
he Amsoil Sandbox drew 250 plus entrants from four states again for round three of the winter series. There were many newcomers racing for the first time at the box, as well as local regulars. With two races on the books, battles were forming in many classes. You could feel the tension in the air throughout the night as the Sandbox crew pulled off a flawless night of great racing. Round 3 of 6 started with a new track. Everyone was hoping for a track as good as or better than the last. They were not disappointed with Shaefer Tracks work of art. In fact most riders agreed the new track was even better. The total track was changed with the exception of the starting gate position. The new track is a bit more supercross style, but not to much. Challenging enough for A class riders to show their stuff and safe enough for the little guys. Ventilation improvements have also been made to the facility, and it is all making for even better times in the beauiful indoor facility. The night started off with the fastest riders (James Povolny, Nick Jackson and Mike Bottolfson) giving a great show for the crowd in the 250A class. Rounding the first corner leading was Jackson with Bottolfson close behind. Povolny did not get the start he wanted, but closed in on Bottolfson’s rear tire within a half a lap. These two riders tangled in a corner on lap two with Povolny moving into second. By this time Jackson had a sizable lead. Povolny put his head down and closed the gap quickly. With one lap to go Povolny was within a bike length of the leader. Jackson rode smooth and held his lines to finish first with Povolny almost passing him at the checked flag. Bottolfson finish third.
Keenan Strom on his way second in Schoolboy.
Second moto was just as exiting, only this time Povolny pulled the holeshot. Jackson tried every line there was but could not get around the green number four bike of Povolny. Jackson finished second ahead of Bottolfson. Povolny would continue on and win three classes for the night. Michael Riehm showed the same stunning speed in 250B as he has in the first two rounds of the series. He pulled the holeshot and never looked back in both motos leaving Tyler Allen and Sam Long trading positions in motos one and two. Allen finished second overall when all was said and done. Some of the night’s closest racing was not only done in the 50cc 4-6 age class. Dj Gritzmacher of Pewaukee, WI and Devan Dietsch of Robins, IA battled in both motos. Dietsch took the lead in moto one with Gritzmacher on his tail. They ran this way through moto one with Brayden Gilson finishing third. The second moto holeshot was taken again by Dietsch. Gritzmacher rounding corner one in fourth. Gritzmacher then turned it on, passing his way by Gilson for second midway through lap two. By the third lap he was right on Dietsch. Gritzmacher, having better speed this moto, pulled side by side Deitsch two corners in a row. Unfortunately, the third time did not work out so well for Gritzmacher. The two riders hit at the face of a

jump with Gritzmacher going down. The hard charging effort still landed Gritzmacher fifth in the moto for a fourth overall. Dietsch finished won both motos for the overall. Gilson ran two consistent motos in third for second overall. This round of the winter series had many close races. Open B class’s Michael Riehm, Tyler Allen and Sam Long battled and exchanged different finishes each moto. Sam Long took the overall win. Allen finished second. In the 65cc 7-9 class Garret Strege and Pierce Knight were tire to tire for three laps until they collided on the down side of a jump. Somehow, Strege managed to save himself. Knight was not so lucky. Knight had a DNF in moto one but came back to finish second in moto two. Strege took both moto wins for the overall. Alex Ingalls of Prior Lake took a second and fourth for second overall. Keenan Strom and Brandon Riehm traded moto wins in the Super mini 12-16 class. Strom took the important moto two win for the overall. Vet A’s Troy Lipka of Ashland, CYCLE USA, March 2009

WI benefited from Mike Little’s crash in the woops section in moto two. Lipka ran fourth in moto one and won moto two for the overall. With three races left in the series no one has things locked up yet in any class. Everyone will race the same track in January. The track then changes again for February. As the winter months get colder, we appreciate having a facility like the Sandbox here in the Midwest more and more. A “hats off” to everyone for working hard and giving us racers a winter play area.

Eye on the Prize D23 Enduro/Hare Scrambles Banquet
Little Falls, Minnesota - January 31 By Jennie Carpenter
T
he 2008 Hare Scramble and Enduro season has been etched into the history books. Record amounts of racers and their families attended the '08 banquet to help rap up what has been a great season. Mike Prom estimated that there were about 45 more attendees than last year. It was a year in review with the video footage from this year’s race season. All the hard work paid off for the 2008 State Champions, Dylan Debel (Hare Scrambles), and Craig Holasek (Enduro). They have pushed their limits to achieve State level recognition. Craig Holasek has been riding since 1986, and tore up the 2008 season with his high performance KTM 250. Holasek has an unbelievable talent to be able to ride out his 8th Enduro State Championship. Twenty four years of being a member of the AMA has proven his loyalty and commitment to his racing career. When asked if there were any words of wisdom or advice for younger riders, “don't try to win, instead stay focused and go out to ride, not to win,” said Holasek. A 2009 race goal of Holasek’s would be to reclaim another state championship, but he’s aware of new and upcoming younger compePeter Fanum 250B 2nd place

Peter Fanum, 250C rider has raced hard and put away a strong season, successfully completing a full season of hare scrambles finishing second. When asked what his favorite race of the season was, Fanum responded saying, “Hill City, it was an awesome race with eleva- Champions Dylan tion changes, and a Debel and Craig Holasek combination of open and tight sections.” tionally well? “I’m going to say Bruno, I took Fanum has planned to improve his placement 2nd. Keep pushing forward if you feel like giving up,” stated Fanum. In addition, Fanum would like to thank Larson Cycle and SA Dan for their support, as well as Debel and Blomberg for continuing to make him a better rider. Tyler Salzer is also a big fan of racing hare scrambles, proven by his placement for the ’08 season, finishing 3rd in 250B. What technique did you accomplish this year that helped? “I would say practice would be key, but also going out there just trying my best and not letting anything get in my head.” Was there a specific race in ‘08 where you did excep-
would be just to have fun out there. Winning isn’t everything, it’s about having fun and trying your hardest. Also practice will make you quicker and a better rider. If you ride with an older rider who’s faster and learn their lines and techniques that will really help out.” Susan Voss is an upcoming force in woods racing. After taking her first Championship in Girls Hare Scrambles she is on her way to becoming a big threat to all the boys. To accomplish the 2008 season she took it upon herself to never give up, and to finish the race no matter how she was feeling. Voss stated, “I would like to ride some more. This year I raced every weekend and didn't really have time to ride for fun.” When Voss was asked if she had any helpful advice for new riders, she responded with, “Don't worry if you don't get a trophy, just always push yourself to do the best you can do. It may sound cheesy, but it’s true!” Colton Reschke has achieved a back to back win with 2007 and 2008 Micro championships. When asked how he accomplished this, Colton responded, “Practice and focus.” It goes to show what many hours of practice will earn you. Depending on how much determination and dedication that you put into practicing will control the outcome of your finishes. When asked what his favorite race was and why, Colton said, “Cambridge, it’s open and fast.” Colton wanted to thank his sponsors: CD Tile & Stone, Moose Racing and Decal Works for all their help that con-

without a chance to slow the weekend down and enjoy time with other racers. My advice for 2009, take a minute to savor the moment of being at the races. Sure you are there to race, but get to know other racers. We’re all there for ONE reason, we love to ride! Come out and support your passion to ride! The 2009 race season will be starting off with the Monticello Hare Scramble put on by the Norsemen Motorcycle Club. I wish the best of luck to everyone while we take on another season of doing what we do best!

AMA District 22 Motocross Banquet Tama, Iowa - January 31 Photos by Missi Thede
T
he AMA District 22 Motocross Group held their 2008 Motocross banquet at Iowa’s Meskwaki Casino on the last Saturday of January. With good weather, a central location and a wonderful facility, the large group of racers and their families and friends had a lot to celebrate. With special room rates and a lot of activities available for all ages, the turn-out was one of the best in recent years. Several motorcycle dealers, accessory companies and related businesses took advantage of the banquet room and large crowd by setting up booths and displays highlighting their products for the attendees. On the opposite side of the room were several overflowing tables full of prizes for the riders. Each rider who would be receiving an award in the evening’s program was given a ticket when they signed in for the banquet. Next, the riders headed to the prize tables to pick up their prize. This was a new concept that not only saved a lot of time, but also was very popular with the riders. The evening program got underway with an excellent meal, which was served right on schedule at 6. As the riders and their fans finished eating, motocross chairman Chip Bryan opened the evening’s ceremony by welcoming everyone, and introducing AMA District 22 President Mark Bonnell. Mr. Bonnell spent the next few minutes explaining the new structure of AMA District 22 and everyone’s
responsibilities under the new structure, including the District Officers, Congress Delegates and Motocross Committee members. Next, Mr. Bryan went over a brief recap of the 2008 season, and unveiled the 2009 Championship Motocross Series venues, dates, series changes and other important information. The crowd of 400 plus was nearly silent as the intently listened. There were a lot of smiling faces in the crowd as the details of the progressive series were announced. The next portion of the evening was one that meant a lot to a very large portion of the crowd. Bonnell requested that the Palmer family come up on stage. The family was presented with a huge gold cup styled trophy in the memory of Bob Palmer who passed away last September. Bob had been a huge part of the sport for over 30 years, and was the Points Steward for many of those years. The microphone was then handed over to Bob’s son Rob who said a few special words about what his Dad meant to himself and his family. After this touching moment, Rob then announced that the family and a few close friends had gotten together to create a special award called the Bob Palmer Sportsmanship Award. The re-
cipient would be a Vet rider whom the family felt represented the qualities that Bob possessed during the 2008 season. Rob then asked for Mike Dakovich to come up to receive the special award. Mike, who has been a friend of the Palmer family for many years, was by far the most deserving Vet rider during the 2008 season. Mike was visibly surprised and grateful to be the first recipient of the first award. Mark Drost, the Emcee for the evening, took over the microphone for the remainder of the evening’s festivities. The large screen that was used for the earlier presentations was slowly raised revealing the huge collection of trophies that were to be given to the best of the best of the AMA District 22 Motocross Championships. The Youth classes were up first with many of the trophies being larger than the winners of the trophies themselves. After the youth awards, a short break in the program served as the perfect time to raffle of the last of the prizes, announce the winners of the silent auction that was held to raise money for next year’s Bob Palmer Sportsmanship Award, announce the winner of the signed Justin Brayton jersey and take care of a few other details. Up next were the Amateur and Vet class awards. The final award of the evening was another special one, the Iron Man Award. This went to Kody Pirie who raced a total of 29 race dates for the 2008 season, usually in three classes at every event! Congratulations Kody, you deserve it for all your hard work. The Motocross group proved that they really know what their riders like by putting on one of the most successful banquets in recent years. The evening wound down with a lot of bench racing amongst friends and competitors. A great time was had by all. The AMA District 22 Motocross Group wish to thank all that made the 2008 season a success, and look forward to seeing you all in this new season. CYCLE USA, March 2009

Another Exciting CWIRA Season T Neillsville, Wisconsin - January 11
he opening weekend of the 2009 Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association’s season was held the week prior in Fremont, WI. After a good warm-up race on Saturday, much of the central state was covered with ice overnight, keeping a number of Sunday only racers from making the trip. Those that stayed over in the area, made it another good day, as there was still 200 plus entries. Round two of the points series moved west to Neillsville, for the annual stop at Lake Sherwood. Roughly 250 entries put on a great show as they hit the ice in 29 different classes. A number of the riders were again at the lake for a second consecutive day, following a Saturday Endurance race put on by Jeff Fredette, on the other side of the lake. The Open Pro motorcycle class always gets the CWIRA program started, and right off the start John Strangfeld pushed his Kawasaki into the lead. Through the first two turns Mark Muth had his big Harley at Strangfeld’s side. They separated down the first straight as Muth couldn’t hold on to the quick, early pace. Luke Fox pulled to Muth’s rear fender, then slid by as they crossed the line at the end of the first lap. Fox kept Strangfeld honest, but never reeled him in to attempt a move. Muth slid back a few more spots as Jamie Hanson and Jason Severt worked up to third and fourth at the half way point. Honda rider Jeff Hawbaker went under Muth with two laps to go for Noah Baehnman is hands down the fastest little guy on the ice!

fifth. Hanson and Hawbaker pushed Strangfeld through the first couple corners of the second moto, but by the time the came out of turn four to finish the first lap, the running order was set for the three with Strangfeld taking the win. Severt had his hands full running in fourth as Fox was really working to move up... and his efforts paid off as he held the spot. Merrill, WI’s Brian Frandsen took the lead in the first Open C moto and stretched it out to a few bike lengths right away. In second, Franklin, WI’s Ian Malinowski was feeling a push from Marcus Marti and James Manning. As they went into the third lap, Malinowski broke away from Marti and
Manning to start closing the gap on Frandsen. As the two went into turn three, they were now side by side fighting for the lead. Coming out of four, Malinowski held the inside and took the lead as the white flag flew. From there, he led it for the first moto win, making it a Honda sweep of the top three spots. Frandsen held off Malinowski for the all important second moto win and overall. Corey Schroeder made up for a rough first moto to take over third, edging out Marti in the final laps. Marti’s 4-3 finishes were still good for third overall. There wasn’t much for consistency in the Open B class. Bryan Smetana led each lap to the end for the first moto victory on
The Trend Of Sound Testing Jim Falke, CWIRA President was involved in sound testing at this event, and we asked him to explain what they were doing. “We’re working to get everyone down to 96db, as we feel that is were all our riders are eventually going to have to be to race on public waterways. The bikes don’t have a specific restriction now, so we are testing them, and setting them at a maximum of 102db at 4000 rpm’s. The 4000 rpm is a standard rpm that is being used by the Department of Natural Resources now. We started with an electronic rpm gauge that was suseptible to the cold weather. Now we use a vibration gauge, sort of like tuning forks where there are no electronics, and it works well. It is placed on the gas tank and you just visually see the rpm’s change. We’re finding a lot of the stock four
wheelers at about 92 to 94. Bikes are a little more. A stock two stroke is always very quiet. Because of the limits we are running, none of the stock stuff is failing. They get louder if they need to be re-packed. The loudest are the modified machines. Our sound limits are a rule, but we are not disqualifying anyone on it today. Working into it the way we are, stricter enforcement will come later as we get everyone down. Most of the guys that are running into problems have other parts in the trailers that will quiet them down. The general thought is that more sound is more power, and it isn’t always the case. We’re doing this before we have to so kids have a place to race in the future, and I think that if we don’t get quieter, we won’t be racing.”

Quad riders make up a large part of the day’s program, and there are classes for everyone, little kids, up to the fastest classes of the day, filled by Pro riders. These Pro riders are on very well set-up quads, usually with a bunch of modifications to the chassis, suspension and motors. When they hook up their wide profile studded tiers, it looks like fast slot cars going around the track. At the start of the Open Pro Quad class first moto, it was three wide through the first lap. Motokazie Indoor Motocross Fergus Falls Minnesota - Jan. 24/25 By Matt Wellumson
F
or many of us in the winter loving portions of the north, January motorsports usually consist of ice racing, or snowcross. Not long ago, most gearheads looking to get a Motocross fix in the winter had to travel to places like Oklahoma, Texas, or any other similarly warm location. If you are pro level, your options were slightly wider, as you had opportunity to ride indoors at stadiums and other such venues. Thankfully times have slowly been changing for all us amateur level riders interested in Motocross activities during the winter months. For those with the time, and racing equipment ready to go, the MX gods have created facilities for us to enjoy our sport when it is well below freezing outside! Late January there was a two day event held inside a large building that would normally be the type of venue for horse riding. Inside the complex known as Red Horse Ranch (RHR) near Fergus Falls Minnesota, riders would find an impressive array of gated horse stalls with concrete floors and plenty of space. However if one was expecting a stinky, dirty horse barn, their senses would soon be shocked harder than an unMateo Johnson won Saturday’s 65cc 7-9 class.
fortunate rider crashing in the whoops. Even with the excellent ventilation, it was hard to miss the faint smell of race gas, and not see stalls filled with race bikes as opposed to large animals. The real reaction to watch for, came from people who hadn't been to this venue before. I can't count how many times
Jake Henrichs (#103) gets a great jump off the line in 250B.
I witnessed shock and amazement in a kids face while they set their eyes on the Supercross style track set in a huge 144,000 square foot indoor arena. For many, this is the closest they have ever been to a large indoor track like they would see on TV. The event was put on by, Motokazie (MK) a company that has been doing Motocross events since 1997, out of Belle Plain, Minnesota. MK put together a track designed to challenge riders of every age and skill level, which is a big challenge when attempting to make a track both safe, and entertaining for the fast riders. The multipurpose track was great, as a quick check of the race schedule revealed over 30 classes ranging from 50cc oil injected bikes, all the way up to a Quad open class. Home towns for participants in this event were equally as expansive due to many having logged hundreds of miles just to get to the facility. With many riders not having raced for months, there was quite a bit of pent up energy to be released, which made for intense racing moments. Of the near 300 entries, many came from outside of Minnesota, and over fifteen from Manitoba Canada. With the lineup of riders hailing from all over the region, the top five finishers often lived hundreds of miles apart, making the results resemble national events more than just a small regional race. There were a few races that really captured my attention, including some day one action in the 85cc 12-15 class. In this group there was an intense battle going between
#83 Brandon Riehm from Annandale MN, and Richmond Morin (#26) of Canada. These two kids battled it out hard on both days of racing, with the most intense action taking place during Saturday. Among the other amazing riders that came down from Canada, Morin put forward some fast times through the timing / whoops section at Red Horse, making it hard for Riehm to get any distance on him. When you combine that trait with Riehm's cornering speeds, it made for a really close race both times. Heat #2 started off really fast with Riehm getting the holeshot, followed closely by Morin who passed Riehm in the timing section, and held first into the back section. From there it was really close until Riehm laid down the power in the corners and pulled ahead of Morin. The two riders checked out from the competition in both races, Riehm taking the win ahead of Morin, as Hayden Mckinny of Manitoba rounded out third place. While the 85cc racing was intense both days, I actually think the racing on the second day of this event was even better in most of the classes. By this point the riders had a good taste of the competition and had some opportunity shake out the rusty skills. In 250A (Lites), the pack started strong off the gate during race two, and pressed hard all the way until the end. From the start Ryan Ditus (#721) of Montana held the lead, and pressed ahead of (#217) Garrett Nelson of Lakeshore, MN, and SD's Jesse Frost (#274). Frost, who himself finished first in heat one found himself fighting for second during the first couple laps. Garrett put down some great effort to finish third, quite an improvement over his heat race! The lead was really close to changing hands two laps before the checkered flag, when Ditus overshot a small double near the start gate, almost opening the door for Frost to take CYCLE USA, March 2009

over. Ditus recovered from this mistake, and started the charge again. Frost had a really good run on Ditus, however he had a small fumble in one of the larger rut turns. Thankfully for him, he didn’t stall his bike, and was able to hold on to his position. Ice Racing returns to Indiana Cedar lake, Indiana - January 18
T
here’s a new AMA sanctioned ice racing effort going on in northwestern Indiana, and while it is still in its first season, there is growing momentum and this year is setting the stage for good things to come. It has been a long time since Indiana or Illinois have had a real ice racing series to contend, and the riders seem to be as excited as anyone to see this taking off. Cedar Lake, just ten minutes east of the IN/IL state line, and only a hop south of Chicago makes this a prime location for a lot of riders. Fred Rozenich is “the guy” for the restaurants, Moto Club On Ice founder Fred behind the new bars and other busiRozenich gave us some background on ice racing effort. nesses around the lake what he and his group have started. at a time when things “Back in the early seventies the Lucky usually just die off. road specialist Charlie Deutscher. Just past the half way point, Fredette ran into a lapper, and almost gave up his lead. Farrell was now up to second overall as he and Deutscher had worked their way past Dupree. Farrell went after Fredette for a couple laps, then Fredette pulled a little gap that held. Farrell took the Open class win ahead of Dupree and Jason Kersting. Deutscher was second in 250 behind Fredette, and Richard Piskoty beat Zachary Malone in the 86-200cc group. In the second outing, Fredette led again until about the fifteen minute mark when he dropped back to second behind Farrell, just ahead of Deutscher that had worked past Dupree. Farrell was on a mission to hold of the charging Fredette... even though they were officially in different classes, an overall win is always a bonus. With just a few laps to go, Farrell stalled his bike and Fredette went back into the lead to take the 250 class overall. The top three in each class ended up in the same positions as they had in the first moto. The ATV road course event had a two rider brawl for the lead that lasted all thirty minutes. Guy Sutton led the entire race, but never had more than a couple second gap over Josh Strominski. The two were sidedby-side several times early, and then again in

the final laps. Jeremy Schulte held off advances from both Brian Smith and Bryan Oparka to finish third. We caught up with Strominski after the moto and asked how he liked ice racing, and this venue. “I like this, it is something to do in the winter time, and the competition keeps growing. I typically run motocross, and came out here set up for that last week, and I learned a lot. The quad is a lot better now. I haven’t ran the oval yet, but I think I’ll like the road course better with turns in both directions and some long sections, it is pretty cool. They haven’t done this for years, but it is right across the lake from where I live, so this is great. I hope they just keep running it, and it keeps growing because it is a lot of fun.” Winner, Sutton didn’t show his ice racing inexperience as he came back and won the second moto as well. Again, Strominski was second, looking for a chance to move up. Oparka finished third, for third overall. Sutton was all smiles, having a good time after the race. “This is our first time out... both myself and my daughter. Usually we race motocross, a lot of these guys run

flat track, so we’re just running the screws in the tires for traction, and coming out to have a good time. This is new to us, and something we can do together, and so far we really enjoy it.” On the smaller oval course... Tim Farrell took the early lead in the Open bike class and looked to be a run-away winner until he slowed, and then pulled of the track with a dead bike. His early retirement put Dupree in the lead. Fredette was looking to move up, but slid out into the deep snow,

dropping back to third. Jason Kersting ran the final laps in second, biting at the rear fender of Dupree’s Kawasaki to no avail. Dupree isn’t a stranger to ice racing, so it was no surprise to find him in contention for wins all day. “I’ve been ice racing for probably fifteen or more years. This is fun, and it is close to home. This is the second event I’ve made. Both courses are fun, I like the oval, but you get more riding on the road layout. I’m glad to see it keep getting bigger.”

Farrell got his bike running in time for the second moto, and came back with a win... not that it mattered in the overall picture, but it was a good way of feeling better about the first moto DNF. Dupree’s 1-2 results were all he needed for the overall ahead of Kersting and Fredette. Steve Shavelec put a back to back set of moto wins on the Open Quad oval event. Jeremy Schultz went 2-3 for second overall ahead of Shay Krayniak (5-2). Cedar Lake, Indiana’s Richard Piskoty may have won the road course battle with Zach Malone... but Malone struck back on the oval. After finishing second in the first moto, he turned it up and won the second moto to take the overall, and break Piskoty’s chance at a two class sweep. some others. Tonight the top riders from The Illini Series, Stateline Summer Series and CRMX received their well deserved awards. Welcome and Thank you were the first things out of Ray’s mouth as he took to the podium to open the night’s events. He did a great job telling stories, talking about the track changes for next year, and the fact they will start back racing in April, and will host a Loretta Lynn’s qualifier. Getting big laughs, he was on a roll but crashed with the “burnt toast” story and was quick to be removed by Nadine! It was great, and everyone there was having a good time. Nadine took her turn and thanked all who made this season and night possible. Special thanks go to R&R Powersports, Travco Motosports, Phyllis Blume Photography, and FMF, all who donated prizes and giveaways for the night. After

Most riders have no idea what it takes to host an event so we can race and have fun. To all those who contribute, “THANK YOU”. I want to say special thanks to Sue who I understand will not be back full time next year, I will miss seeing you. With that the awards started there were plenty of smiles packing back their loot. Three riders deserve special attention, starting with Keeze Carver who was a three class winner in both the track championship as well as the Illini Series. The overall Amateur champion was Open B rider Dustin Anderson. The Overall Youth Champion was Drew Boyer, both received huge trophies. With that the awards were over, so eat right, train, practice and maybe next year you will be the one bringing home the gold.

Championship Racing Series invades Illinois Bloomington, Illinois - January 24 By James Pinckard
Podium L-R: Jared Mees, JR Schnabel, and Jake Mataya.
R
ound four of the 33rd World Championship ICE Racing Series slid into Bloomington, IL at the awesome US Cellular Coliseum. A full house of fans and racers were treated to some very exciting racing. With the most riders of any event this season, and only a select few spots for the main, the heats were very aggressive. With many of the riders straight from the National short track and flat track series, these guys are the best at what they do. I’m sorry guys and one girl! The first time ever a female rider raced a Pro World Cup Bike. When Megan Powell went on the track she also went into the record book and became a part of the ice racing history. Even though she did not make it to the main event, she put on a good show with a couple third place finishes, finishing first in the hearts of the crowd. Two rounds of heats of four riders took eight riders to the main event. With banging, bumping and trading spots, every heat was full of action. At the end of the first round of heats Jared Mees, Joe Kopp, JR Schnabel, Kevin Vance and Sam Wiggins. The second round of heats went to Kevin Vance, Kirk Cheney, Sam Wiggins, JR Schnabel, and Jared Mees. In the last chance qualifier Joe Kopp took the early lead but could not hold of the charge of Jake Mataya and Kevin Anderson setting the field for the main. Going into the main Suzuki rider JR Schnabel had the fastest lap time of the heats, setting him on the pole. With the crowd on their feet all eight riders launched into the first turn with Schnabel in the lead. Mees was in second with Wiggins in third. Wiggins made a pass on Mees taking second only to be passed back. The rider on the charge was Mataya who worked past both into second. Mees had some trouble as did Kopp taking them to the back at the half way mark. This made for even more exciting racing as Schnabel charged in the lead with Mataya in tow... it was a war behind them. Mees forced his way from sixth to third with Kopp getting to fourth, and still banging till
the very end. At the checkered flag the finish was Schnabel first Mataya second! If you love racing then you need to see one of these events, the action will truly have you on the edge of your seat. The Pro Quad class is also a fan favorite made up of various styles of quads ranging from twostrokes to 450 4strokes, and of course the wild machines like the 1000cc GSXR quad and the one off Harley special made for this event. In the Main, Ryan Kaufman took the early lead with Dan Jensen and Daniel Bergquist third. On the third lap Bergquist dove down low bumping Jensen, making him get into Kaufman just enough to get around both for the lead. Going into the last lap Kaufman had enough of being in second and tried a pass on Jensen only to stall his quad and make a traffic jam! With the flow of the race disrupted, Kevin Veon dashed from fifth to second with Zach Thomas in tow as they crossed the finish for a crazy end of the race!
Pro Quad action. The track is small, so racing is super tight.
Amateur Quad winner Dillon Overman.
After go carts left the track it was time for what had to be the crowd favorite. Amateur quads. With only a few screws per tire, traction was very hard to get for these guys, and it showed. After heat races they lined up for the main, and it was a riot! There were so many crashes and spins that you could not see them all, but one thing you could see was the smile on both the riders and fans faces. When the rotating demo derby came to a stop Dillon Overman took the win and the cheers of the crowd. Harrison was right there as well with Mason Schaendorf and Chad Saultz. It didn’t take long for Harrison to move out front, taking that position before the end of the first lap. Saultz got by Schaendorf and set out after the leader Harrison and Hayes. By the third lap the trio was in a tight bunch for the next two laps before Harrison kicked in the after burns and rode off for the win. Hayes crossed the line in the runner-up spot but it was not with out a fight as Saultz was right there at the flag. Schaendorf and Bryce Mclaud filled in the balance of the top five in a great race of the up and coming stars of Arenacross. Arenacross main event - Jim Neese, Brock Sellards and Adams had the fast line into and through turn one, pulling the pack down the whoops with Jeff Gibson, Tyler Bright, Kelly Smith and Josh Demuth in tow. Neese gave in to the pressure of Sellards through the whoops and was also passed by Keith Johnson as things only got worse from there for Neese, who lost a front wheel and his position near the front. Sellards also had
trouble with traction, handing Johnson the lead just before the catapult. Johnson was fast and steady as he clicked off lap after perfect lap to claim the top step of the podium. Chad Johnson was making a rush for the front, and pulling Kelly Smith with him as they both got mediocre starts. At the halfway point it was Sellards settling into second, looking good in spite of being a last minute sign on to the Triple Effects team. Gibson, Demuth and Bright were in a three way battle for the #416 Chad Saultz (Batavia, IL) goes inside of 65cc winner Mitchell last chance to talk with Harrison and Ashton Hays on his way to a podium finish. the new Miss Arescored the win, Sellards was second with Gibnacross Lindsey Schelson holding off fellow Tuf Racing teammate tema at the end of the Demuth to lock down third and fourth. Fifth night. Chad Johnson was up for grabs both Chad Johnson and was right on Bright Willard had gotten by Bright for one last run with two laps to go but through the rhythm section. Johnson left the Willard had worked his inside open and Willard went for it way to hot way round Smith, and and took both Kawi riders down, dropping now wanted Johnson them outside the top ten, allowing Bright to before the finish as steal a top five finish in the National Arewell, and the fight was nacross opener. on. Keith Johnson Michigan’s Josh Litchtle put in a solid ride in the Lites class to finish fifth.

Sandbox Double header New Richmond, Wisconsin - Jan. 10-11 By Michael Anderson
T
his weekend’s race put the winter series over the half way mark, with 5 of 6 races counting for points. This added extra pressure on racers battling for top positions in the motocross and quad series. To add to the mix, some of the top point’s leaders were absent, leaving the door open for new series challengers. Yet again, there was over 230 entries starting Saturday’s motocross and a better than ever turnout for Sunday’s quad series race. Motocross started the weekend off on Saturday afternoon. First moto of the 250A class had new comers to the series. Kelly Brown of Princeton, MN and Shane Gailey of Iowa. The gate dropped and things were so close rounding the first corner it was hard to tell who pulled the holeshot. After a half lap it was Nate Rosso, Nick Jackson and Brown. The three held their positions until mid way through the second lap when Brown knifed his front tire under a rut and then killed his motor. Jackson then pulled in on Rosso within seconds. Jackson took over, but soon had Rosso had Mike Bottolfson putting big time pressure on him for the top spot. With one lap to go Bottolfson passed for second and the moto finished with the three in that order. Brown pulled the holeshot in moto two and then had his bad luck continue as he over jumped a table top in the rhythm section. Brown went down hard and didn’t continue. This put Bottolfson and Jackson in the front. Jackson again passed Bottolfson for the lead, this time not looking back. This moto Shane Gailey passed Rosso for third in the moto and overall. Schoolboy 12-16 was an even better race. In moto one Keenan Strom pulled the holeshot with Adam Reek and Jake Burbach of Hudson, WI close behind. These three looked like they were attached until going through the woops where they would go three wide. Two corners later Strom slid his rear tire and slowed too much to double the next jump, allowing both Reek and Burbach by. The very next lap in the same corner Reek went down. Strom passed for second and Riehm moved into third. Everyone seemed to settle down for the last lap and a half. Moto two saw Burbach pull the holeshot with Reek and Riehm in tow. After all the moto one crashes, stalled bikes and slide outs, the three racers rode hard, kept things on two wheels and finished as they started. In the +40A class Brad Cunningham easily took the win. Brad’s closest competitor, Mike Anderson is one of the series leaders. He sustained major wrist damage practicing a couple weeks ago. Cunningham will have to find another racer to chase him through the balance of the winter series. Norman Miesen 42 CYCLE USA, March 2009
finished second and took over the series points lead. In +40B Jeff Johnson and his Honda 450 continued to dominate the class taking both moto wins. As always the 50cc class races were as close as ever. Maxx Bedell of St. Michael and Dj Gritzmacher of Pewaukee, WI went back and forth, each winning one moto. Bedell held off Gritzmacher winning the second moto for the overall. In the 50cc Premix 4-6 Tyler Inman of Runnells, IA pulled the holeshot and never looked back while Jaxon Opitz, Devan Dietsch and Gritzmacher battled like pros fighting for the last transfer spot to a supercross main. First moto Dietsch didn’t get the start he was looking for but moved up quickly to the second spot. His hard charging effort fell short of success when he crossed up in a deep rut going down, falling back to fourth. Opitz took advantage of this and moved to second with Gritzmacher now in third. In the second moto Inman would again run away with the rest of the pack battling for second. This race Dietsch got a much better start running in second place. The overall went to Inman. After finishing up motocross Saturday night, the Sandbox crew worked late into the next morning prepping the track for the next

round of the Quad series. This being my first Quad race of many to cover I was surprised by the seriousness, yet laid back and friendly racers and spectators. I was also shocked by how fast these racers could go on four wheels around the Sandbox track. Even the toughest and longest jumps were made by most A class riders. Even though passing was tougher due to the size of the Quads, there was plenty being done. The day started off with the Production 450cc A class. Cam Reimers of Iowa pulled the holeshot with Mark Delahaut close behind. Both riders went side by side through the first set of whoops until Reimers closed the door from the inside line. Reimers slowly pulled away leaving Delahaut and Golberg knocking tires for second. Golberg kept pushing, but struggled in a couple corners after attempting to pass and fell too far back to catch Delahaut. In moto two Reimers led from the start. Golberg had a much better start and held off Delahaut on the last lap to take second overall. Production 450B had nine quads on the line, and you knew the first turn was going to be real interesting. Some how everything was clean though as Iowa’s Dalton Hicks took the lead. Spencer Roorda had a hiccup at the gate and rounded the corner in last. Hicks pulled away from everyone while Roorda worked his way through the pack. Mike Barnhart was holding second, trying to keep Hicks in sight.
By the end of the moto Roorda had moved all the way up to fourth. Second moto Hicks again pulled the lead early but this time with Roorda right behind and Justin Witucki in third. Roorda and Witucki battled for second place, leaving Hicks to walk away again. Barnhart, who finished second first moto DNF’ed this time. This gave Roorda second overall after his huge charge in the first moto. Witucki finish third overall. In the Amateur Sport 12-15, Gasey Glaser of North Branch, MN had a perfect day winning the overall. Sam Rowe finished a respectable second. Bo Schuette of Cannon Falls was looking good for a top three after pulling the holeshot in moto two only to go down hard in the woops, causing a DNF. This left the door open for Cody Skelly to better his first moto fourth, and take third overall for the day. 2008 King Of The Hill Winners By Bud Northrup Photo by Gordon Green
K
aleb Northrup, through his Kingofthehill.org website, sponsors three ‘King’ hill climb series in the Midwest. hill climb clubs in the districts offer one ‘King’ class each year, with Northrup supplying the trophy to the event winner. Most clubs also add a cash award of their own to the winner. At the end of the season, Northrup provides an overall ‘King of the Hill’ trophy and $100 cash to the season champion. The format is simple for the event. The ten fastest riders of the day, regardless of the class, compete at the end of the race in a one run, winner take all ‘dash for cash’. The event has become a fan and rider favorite in the Midwest. This year, Kirk Mueller was the King in the Minnesota/ Wisconsin region. Mueller, riding a 750cc Kawasaki triple, compiled one win and two seconds to claim the title, edging Harley riding Todd Cipala who posted one win and one second, with a fifth and seventh place finish. Other riders who claimed a win were Aaron Prebe, Jay Sallstrom, Brent Stevenson and Chuck Neinfeldt. In the Illinois/ Indiana region, young
Shane Green, from Georgetown, Illinois, posted two wins, two seconds, a fourth, and a fifth to take the crown. Green rode three fast bikes, a YZ250, a KTM380 and a KX500, and often qualified two or even all three of them. (In such a case, the rider has to choose only one to run, with the top ten being filled in by the next fastest riders). Green is moving on to the AMA Professional circuit in 2009, riding two Yamaha 650 twin based hill climbers built by Jeff Thomas, one displacing 700cc and the other 900cc. He will be missed in the amateur circuit. Cody Jenner claimed the second place spot with a first and a second. He competes on a CR500, and a big bore Kawasaki fire breather and qualified them both. Matt Peters, campaigning on a CR250, KTM380 and KX500, and usually qualifying on more than one, finished third with a first and two thirds. Wade Schultz and Andy Fortner also claimed a win for the fourth and fifth place spots. Eric Donaldson was virtually unbeatable in the Kansas/ Missouri region. Donaldson took the class wins in all three events he rode in for that season crown. Nick Bronnenburg took the remaining win, and also a second place for the runner up spot.
