CWIRA 2010 Season Opener Fremont, Wisconsin - January 3

T

his was it... the season’s opening weekend for all the riders and families looking forward to another season of ice racing with the Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association. With little snow in December, and some cold weather, the ice was great for the first weekend. Saturday opened the weekend’s racing with a non-points paying warmup race. If you can call a day with temps close to zero, and a bunch of wind a good warm-up, you are a true fan of ice racing. Come Sunday, it was a little warmer, and the winds had settled some, but it was still obvious that this was a winter sport. Kicking the day’s racing off was the GP style racing. Here the riders use a longer course with both left and right hand corners, mixing it up from the conventional oval racing. The Open Pro riders were first out, and not a surprise to anyone, John Strangfeld led off the start. Strangfeld is a regular front runner on the ice, and had his Kawasaki out to a three bike length lead after the first lap. Behind him things were heating up quickly as Zac Rosine fought his way into second ahead of Brad Thoma and Brian Frandsen. Rosine was on a mission, and had the fastest pace going as he closed in on Strangfeld, and then made a last lap pass to take the first moto win on his Honda. The second moto was much more calm as Strangfeld took the holeshot ahead of Rozine and then held on for the win and overall. Thoma gated in third ahead of Russell Bradley and they rode that way to the finish. The Amateur GP class had enough riders that they ran two heats to make it to a main event. Zach Sherman came out of the first heat race looking good on his Husqvarna. In the second heat race Robert Fedrowitz led all the way to the end before getting passed by Bryan Smetana in the last lap. Fedrowitz came back even more determined in the final and took the big win ahead of Corey Schroeder, Smetana, and ten others. Quad GP also ran heats to make it to a final where twelve studded quads came off the line looking for the win. After a lot of bumping through the first couple tight corners, Wisconsin Rapids rider Dustin Hoffman came out with the lead. Hoffman looked good winning his earlier heat race, and he set a fast pace again in the final. Winner of the other heat race, Bradley Hesler was in second and under the gun hard from Dan Kujala and Colin Wilcott. As the laps ticket away, Hoffman stretched his lead as the others stayed very close to finish in the same order they had settled into during the first few laps. 6 CYCLE USA, March 2010

Honda, and then ran off with the win. Smetana started in second, but fell back to third as Thoma went by. Frandsen took the class overall ahead of Smetana and Thoma. La Valley finished fifth, for fourth overall ahead of Ian Malinowski. The Outlaw Pro Rubber ATV class kept all the spectator’s attention as usual. The nonstudded riders all fight for traction and positioning, and you’ll see more position changes here than in any of the other racing. That said, if you didn’t know these guys were on bare tires you’d never guess it - they flat out haul on very well set up machines. Scott Lindner had a great start and that usually means trouble for the rest of the class. Scott Geldernick was in second early until spinning out and dropping to the back of the pack. Louis Plaskey took over with Nick Nett and Dustin Hoffman all over his rear fender. Half way through the race Hoffman caught a great line and swept around both Nett and Plaskey to take over second. Nett took advantage of the distraction to pass Plaskey in the next corner, but it didn’t last as Plaskey fought back in the final lap to re-take third. The second moto had Lindner again riding a smart race as he took the win and overBrian Frandsen leads #24 Brad Thoma, and #31 Bryan Smetana in Open B.

all. This time Dan Lindner had a better outing to finish second, just ahead of Nett and Hoffman. Plaskey settled for seventh, proving you just never know what will happen in the rubber classes. Dan Kujala made the trip from Gladstone, Michigan worth while in the Pro/Am Mod Quad studded class. Kujala had all he could handle to hold off Ken Marcou running in second, all over the leader until late in the race when Tad Fehrenbach slipped by him to finish second. Mike Mueller was right there on his Polaris as well for fourth. Marcou rebounded in the second moto for the impressive win ahead of Kujala and Mueller. Kujala’s second was still good enough for the overall. Scott Winkler came away with the win the Pro Vet motorcycle class after finishing third in the first moto. Strangfeld led each lap of the first race with Muth a close second. Winkler got a good

start in the second moto behind Strangfeld who pulled off with mechanical problems in the third lap. Muth (2-2) did everything he could to take advantage, but Winkler held him off for the win and overall (3-1). Kenosha, WI’s Rick Rozinski went 1-1 to win the Amateur Vet class. Michigan’s George Patrick was runner up in the first moto, only to finish fourth in moto two. Jack Potter finished third in moto one on his GasGas. Chris Gettinger went 4-2 for second overall ahead of Patrick as Michael O’boyle, also from Michigan finished the second moto in third for fourth overall ahead of Potter in

Johnson romps Grand Rapids Grand Rapids Michigan January 8/ 9 By Bart Newman

H

ot action filled the air at the 2010 National Arenacross opener in Grand Rapids, Michigan with a field as deep as has been found in years. On Friday, the racing was close and battle fought from the first heat race to the finals. Twice champion Chad Johnson took the

win in the Arenacross class while Kurt McCabe was the top rider in the Lites class. Ashton Hayes led the field in the 85cc class while in the 65cc class it was a great ride by Bryce Mclaud that put the KTM pilot out front at the checkered flag. In the first Arenacross heat race it was Tyler Bright out front and on the gas leading late signing Tuf Honda rider Brock Sellards and Chad Johnson. In the

Wisconsin’s Chad Johnson was super fast through the whoops winning the opener on Friday night.

CYCLE USA, March 2010

second heat race it was Josh Demuth grabbing a popular win aboard his hometown Babbit’s Kawasaki, out gunning last season champions Jeff Gibson and Gary Davenport. The last rider to make it into the final was Dave Ginolfi who nailed the start in the LCQ, fighting his way in to the final. When the gate fell on the Arenacross final it was Jeff Gibson out front and flying. The start wasn’t good for the Babbit’s team as Johnson, Tyler Bowers and Demuth where all buried in the pack. Gibson’s holeshot was a surprise as the Ohio rider elected to run a 250cc machine rather than the 450’s like most in the class. Gibson looked to be in control of the race, but Johnson was coming up fast. Johnson’s charge started about seventh. A battle between Bowers and Johnson began and neither was willing to give an inch. Johnson got under Bowers in the turn after the whoops and ran him high to take over the runner-up spot, setting his sights on Gibson with three laps to go. Johnson was masterful getting by the lappers and quickly on the rear fender of Gibson. A great drive through the whoops put Johnson in position to take the lead for good heading into the rhythm section. Johnson was just too strong through the whoops and opened up some breathing room over the next two laps taking the checkered flag first. Gibson was second after leading much of the final. Zach Ames locked down the final step of the box with Bowers and Nathan Skaggs rounding out the top five. In the Lites class, Taylor Futrell is new to the Arenacross Series and he kicked off the night with a heat race win beating out Cory Green and Tyler Bright. Kurt McCabe proved that the big number #1 on his scooter was no fluke as he beat out Illinois Powersports rider Justin Kelly and Matt Schneider who was third aboard his R&D Motorsports, Renegade Suspension Yamaha. Local pro Randy Woodring had his Yamaha out in front of the

LCQ finding away in to the finals. In the Lites class final it was another race long battle, not uncommon as the up and coming riders make there push into stadium racing. McCabe timed the gate drop perfectly to pull the fifteen rider pack through the whoops. McCabe was on it tonight, and the Storm Lake Honda honcho never looked back, proving that his win at the Des Moines prequel was no fluke. Corey Green was the runner-up for several laps before a wild ride into the stands at the end of the whoops opened up the door for Tyler Bright to move into second. That didn’t last for long as Dan Aulsaybrook was on the move after gating outside of the top five. Aulsaybrook has been pounding laps at the Georgia Practice Facility for most of the last month, and it showed. McCabe backed it down on the last lap or two, and it seemed to fuel Aulsaybrook’s desire as he pulled into striking distance with less than a lap to go. McCabe took the win by a slim margin. Bright was third after laying down some mighty strong laps. Rounding out the top five was A.J. Catanzaro and Devon Pilington. In 65cc action it was Bryce Mclaud without hesitation as the starting gate dropped. The McGrath Motorsports rider got through the whoops clean and then doubled his way through the rhythm section to open up some breathing room early in the race. The race for the second was close as there were at least five riders in play for it. Anthony Wallace had the right stuff in the end to place his Decal Works KTM in front of Thomas Neumann who runs a Team MXtreme/ Panic Rev Powersports green machine in a sea orange. Mason Steed rolled up form Ohio to grab fourth in a good effort while Chase Vansickle claimed the last spot in the top five. The 85cc gate was full of talent, making it hard race to predict. Ashton Hayes from nearby

Rockford, Michigan has probably won as many main events in the Van Andel arena than anyone has, but with Mitchell Harrison, Jacob Williamson, Brett Mclaud, and Nick Wallace it would be anyone’s race. Williamson got the jump off the gate and led the first go around but a trip over the bars in the second run through the whoops dropped the fast starter out of contention, handing the lead over to Hayes. Hayes was on his “A game and rode a nearly mistake free race to take the checkered first. Harrison regrouped after a couple of shaky laps and began to pull away from Mclaud to finish second. Mclaud was third nearly all race and by the end had a good lead over Jake McKinney and Tyler Parkinson who

rounded out the top five. With one night of the National Arenacross Series in the books past champion Chad Johnson looked strong aboard his Team Babbitt Monster Energy Kawasaki, but it will be a long season and the field is as deep as Lake Michigan anything could happen so be sure to stay tuned.

Saturday night a charm for Tyler Bowers Saturday night saw the pro riders come out swinging, but in the end no one was faster than Tyler Bowers. Bowers got faster as the weekend went on, crossing the finish line first and bettering his Friday night finish by three spots. He needed to be fast as he was chased by teammate Josh

Josh Demuth was on it Saturday night grabbing the runner-up spot behind teammate Bowers.

Demuth. The balance of the top five was full of talent as Chad Johnson, Zach Ames and Local boy Kelly Smith were all in the hunt for the last step on the podium. Ames pulled a pair of strong runs down the whoops in the closing laps to make third his. Smith is fast becoming friends with his KTM crossing the line in fourth, just ahead of Johnson. In Arenacross Lites action it was AX rookie Taylor Futrell who overcame first night jitters to take the top spot on this second night. Futrell was turning heads on his second try at pro level Arenacross racing, taking a big win over grizzled veteran Jimmy Neese. The win didn’t come easily as Neese led the field early as he had the starter’s number all night long. Neese settled into second mid race and was able to keep Ryan Zimmer back in third for the balance of main. Fourth went to Kurt McCabe, who wasn’t able to recreate the speed he had on Friday. Rounding out the top five was Aulsaybrook. The 85cc class was full of talent, but none faster than Team

Green backed Mitchell Harrison who had speed and style to spare as he took the top spot in the main event. The win wasn’t a runaway by any means as Friday night’s winner Aston Hayes and fellow podium rider Brett Mclaud were hot on his heels. Mclaud came out on top for the race for second. Alex Nagy was solid in fourth making all the right moves to outrun fifth place rider Jacob Williamson. Bryce Mclaud was king of the 65cc class, taking the top step of the podium for the second time in the weekend. All riders welcome. This will be an exciting race for sure!

Bloomington’s Indoor Ice Racing melted the ice, burning fast lap times to take the top two spots on the podium. Behind them was a street fight! A war that started between Eric Prochnow and Paul Meyer. While Meyer was on the attack he was passed by Dusty Crouch who set out after Prochnow. In the last turn of the final lap Crouch fired and took out both of them giving the final podium spot to Meyer! What a race. After go carts and champion Jon Rankin left the track it was time for what had to be the crowd favorite. Amateur quads. With only a few screws per tire traction was very hard to get for these guys and it showed. After heat races every quad there lined up for the main and it was a riot! There were so many crashes and spins that you couldn’t count them all but one thing you could see was the smiles on both the riders and fans alike. When the rotating demo derby came to a stop Jack Plunk took the win, and the cheers of the crowd. Jared Mees won the Pro Bike class. Bloomington, Illinois - January 23 By James Pinckard

R

ound nine of the 34th World Championship Ice Racing Series slid into Bloomington, IL at the awesome US Cellular Coliseum. A full house of fans and racers were treated to some very exciting racing. With the largest rider turnout this season and only a select few spots on the line for the main events, the heats were filled with very aggressive and close racing. With many of the riders straight from the national short track series, these guys are the best at what they do. This year saw the addition of two stunt riders on sport bikes doing tricks on the ice, and it made for a very entertaining show. Two rounds of heats of four riders took eight riders to the main event. With banging, bumping and trading spots, every heat was full of action. At the end of the first round of heats Jared Mees, JR Schnabel, Kevin Anderson and Sam Wiggins. The second round of heats went to Tom McGrane, Anderson, Jake Mataya, and Schnabel. In the last chance qualifier Bryan McKenna took the win. Going the main Memphis Shades Yamaha JR Schnabel had the fastest lap time of the heats setting him on the pole. On the line, defending champion Kevin Anderson took the “Motion Pro Challenge” wearing the yellow vest and trading his out-

side front row position with Honda rider Tom McGrane. With the crowd on their feet the eight riders launched into the first turn with Schnabel leading, and the pack on his heals. Mess was in second and traded the lead with Schnabel a number of times making it look like it was their race to win. Brian McKenna stalled his bike and Mees got under him clean with Schnabel having to go outside and with that Mees pulled a two bike lead and took the win! Honda rider Jeremy DeRuyter put in an outstanding ride taking the final spot on the podium. Kevin Anderson, Jake Mataya, Tom McGrane, Sammy Wiggins and Bryan McKenna rounded out the field. Giving the fans a show that left them on the edge of their seats! The Pit bikes are always fun and to the roar of the crowd Stephen Huffman took the win. Also a fan favorite, the Pro Quad class is made up of various styles of quads ranging from two-strokes to 450 4-strokes. Following very exciting heat races, everyone had their machines dialed and ready for action. In the main event Daniel Bergquist rocketed to the lead from the pole with the pack snapping at his heals. His teammate Zach Thomas hooked on and those two

The stunt riders kept everyone entertained between races.

Moose 3 Hour Thaws deep Freeze Lake Sherwood, Wisconsin - January 9 By Dave Hollub

M

y first thought as I got ready to drive up to Lake Sherwood was, ‘What in the world am I thinking, it is nine below zero outside’. Still I grabbed my gear and drove up to watch the diehard ice racers face the Jeff Fredette designed course for three hours of fun. As I drove the temperature slowly climbed and by the time I pulled up to the lake it was a balmy six above zero. After parking I headed to the track area as everyone was already out turning practice laps and as each bike pulled in the riders all had big smiles indicative of a well laid out course and near perfect ice conditions. John Strangfeld kept things moving as he called a quick riders meeting and then directed everyone out to the start area. As soon as the first wave of bikes tore off the start it was obvious that today was going to be a perfect day to enjoy some dirt biking on hard water. Once everyone was lined up the first wave, Expert Team, headed out and Team C & D was first to the holeshot with Terry Hahn of Team Englehart right behind. Jeff Fredette powered his Team Green Kawasaki around the holeshot corner in front of the Expert Iron Man class. The next wave was the Amateur Team class and Team Redline led the way. The final class was the Amateur Iron Man and Rob Newport was the leader down the start onto the track. Despite the cold, the three hours went by quickly as the teams kept charging hard and in the end it was Lance Wollin of Team Englehart grabbing the overall win. Later Wollin commented, “Terry started us out right and put in some great laps. He put us out front

and we stayed consistent. We each rode an hour and a half, and had no problems. The layout was great and had a mix of everything. I want to thank Moose Racing and John Strangfeld for putting on a great event. I also want to thank Englehart, RTR Racing, and Sunset Tavern on Lake Koshkonong for plowing a practice track every weekend”. Trent Mobratten (with Corey Schroeder of Team Yodog) was very happy about the chance to ride despite an early departure from a mechanical. Mobratten told me “The course is great, there was some snow on it but that is to be expected. The turns are set up great with some tight corners and several fast sections between. We had to quit because the front tire blew off the rim at about half way. The sun came out and I think it warmed up enough to blow it off”. Tammy Flemming raced with her husband Mike Flemming as Chicken Shite Racing, and after their fourth place finish couldn’t have been happier. Tammy said, “This was an awesome course, every variation, fast areas and tight turns. There were even two snail

shell sections, Fredette specials. The course is just short of four miles and Fredette laid it out yesterday. It just has a beautiful flow to it and was the perfect warm-up for the Steelshoe in a couple weeks. This race is such a special hidden gem for ice racers, we’ll be back again next year.” Topping off the day was the awards where some of the coolest (no pun intended) trophies were handed out. They were the handmade creations of Speedy Pete Laubmeier and everyone that got one was pretty happy to hoist it and show it off. They will be displayed for years to come as they keep the bench racing memories alive. As the day went by the temperature did climb above zero but even if it hadn’t, the racers were plenty warm and everyone had a great time. Nobody had anything but rave reviews of the track and event making it a perfect mid winter doldrums breaker. Moto On Ice delivers fun

Riders line up for the start of the popular road course event.

Cedar Lake, Indiana - January 31

I

ce racing continued in northwestern Indiana again this season, actually it flourished. Each season sees more riders getting involved, and this winter once again saw good ice on Cedar Lake. While the oval was a little rough today, no one seemed to mind. The almost two mile long GP road course was in great shape, and it’s quickly becoming a favorite with a good portion of the riders competing at the weekly races. With any competitive event, there comes a certain amount of serious racing. That said, there’s still a lot of good old fashioned fun rid-

ing going on at these events. A good example of that is in the large Non-Studded Quad oval class. Most of these competitors are running whatever set-ups they ride with all summer. We didn’t find any lowering, extending, or even high-tech, precisely cut Hoosier tires. Some of the quads were still carrying mud from the last rides of the fall. While some of the riders get around the track pretty good, many of them are just having fun bouncing off each other, and the snow banks at the outside edges of the track. You can almost hear them laughing, and you can see the smiles they still have after the sometimes chaotic race is finished. Helmets off, they are all together jok-

Tim Graves and his wife in the sidehack class out of turn two.

ing around in the pits, already looking forward to getting back out there for more. For the most part, they couldn’t care less about all the preparation and seriousness some of the others bring with them. The casual nature is a little unexpected, but actually refreshing, and you can’t help but smile, and laugh with them. Just as present at these events are the far more experienced and serious racers, take Jeff Fredette for example. He comes across as casual, and carefree around the pits, but you just know he has everything exactly right on his bike. He isn’t going to miss a beat, and when the race starts he is going to ride to win, and he often does. The mix of those that are here for just a good time, and those more serious racers make these fun events for everyone, racers and spectators. One of the fun and more unique classes to see hit the ice are the guys on sidehacks. The spectators seem to really get into seeing these guys rip around the oval on the unstudded bikes as well. While it may look like guys out there just for fun, you can tell by the effort put out by all of them, they are doing what they can to win. This week Bill Bean had the right plan, and pulled of the win ahead of Phil Smith and Cliff Bean. Smith won the third moto (they run three motos), but his first two outings kept him from having a real chance at the overall. Bill Bean went 1-1-2 for a near perfect result and the overall. Tim Graves rode his old BSA to fourth with his wife riding along, helping in any way she could to keep the bike hooking up in the corners. One of the earlier classes to hit the ice on the oval was the 201-250cc group. Brookston, IN’s Calib Fritz took the early lead but was being pushed by Nick Desautels by the end of the second lap with Russell Finnegan running third. The three led the seven rider class to the end where Desautels found a way into the lead at the right time to take the first moto victory. The second of two motos was just as close, except this time Fritz held on and took the win to also secure the overall. Desautels was secCYCLE USA, March 2010

ond as Finnegan fell back a spot getting beat by Chad Beckley. The third place finish by Beckley (4-3) gave him third overall while Kevin Miller rounded out the top five. The +40 and +50 class riders combined on the track for their two motos. George Mack took the win in the +50 class while Howard Jabaay put his CRF450 to back to back wins for the +40 overall ahead of Ken Andersen. The Cedar Lake road course is a nice long track that has a good flow to it, mixing in some fast sweepers over the almost two mile layout. Much of the track is marked with old Christmas trees, making it one of the more picturesque tracks you’ll ever find. When the riders hit this track for their thirty minute motos, spectators seem to just appear from everywhere. They come from area homes, and bars. Cars stop on the side of the road, and snowmobilers start to collect at the outskirts of the track as well. All come to check out the fast paced racing, and they get a good show. The bikes go out first, in three waves by class, then the Quads are next out. Two motos each. Jeff Fredette is the man to beat, putting it as simple as possible. We’ve seen riders give him a good run, but he continues to win. Coming out of the second wave start today he quickly established himself in second overall on the track, trying to chase down another fast guy, Tim Farrell. By the third lap another offroad speedster was running third, Charlie Deutscher. Those top three separated themselves from the rest of the pack over the next 30

twenty minutes, and eventually Fredette took over the lead. Farrell came right back at him, and it looked like this may be the time someone knocked Fredette off the top spot on the podium, but a mechanical failure on his Husky ended his day in the final lap. Fredette went on to take both moto wins in the 201-250 class. Deutscher didn’t finish the second moto, allowing another front runner, Nick Desautels to claim second (3-2) ahead of Ricky Piskoty. Jacob Kersting put in two great rides to take the Open class win ahead of senior rider Howard Jabaay (3-2) and Chad Pearson (2-3). Mitch Lewis rode his KDX200 to win the 86-200 class ahead of Zach Malone on his KX85. In the Quad Road Course race Eric Lapato got out front, built a small lead and then just did his thing. He held the lead through the entire race, and looked comfortable avoiding any pressure from behind on his Honda 450. It was a different story further back. Second place Sean Moran never had a chance to catch his breath. Riding his Banshee, he had Tom Green at his rear fender the hole race. Moran, “That guy in third ran me tight the entire way. There’s a few corners in the back that are really snowy, but other wise the track is great. We had that classic two stroke vs four stroke battle as we each had our better sections. I’m an avid motocross rider, but I simply love this ice racing on the road course. We get to come out here and dust off the cabin fever, and have a great time doing it.”

Sean Morgan and Tom Green had a heck of race in the first moto.

Tim Farrell led Jeff Fredette through most of the first moto on the excellent road course.

Kelly Andersen on the road course.

Dade Johnson also had a moto long battle to finish fourth ahead of Dennis Michaels. In the second moto, Lapato repeated his victorious run for a sweep and the overall. “It went pretty good out there. It was my first time on the ice all year, so it was an experience for sure. I like the GP course because all the turns help get you in shape for the summer. You just have to put some screws in your tires and get out there. I tell everyone I know to come out and do this.” From there back it was a new story. Green’s persistence in the first outing, combined with finishing second in moto two gave him sec-

ond overall. Moran had a rough outing, settling for sixth as finished Johnson third with Michaels fourth on his Suzuki. It was another good day, filled with good racing, sunshine, and a lot of happy riders. While ice racing may still be somewhat new to riders this far south, it is catching on and we’d expect to see even more riders turning out for some fun on the ice next year. A new era in By Dave Deringer Photos by hoppenworld.com

T

he 2010 Monster Energy Supercross season is well underway and it’s going to be an exciting fight to the finish. Suzuki’s rookie superstar Ryan Dungey showed everyone at the A1 opener that he would be a force throughout the series as he challenged champion James Stewart the entire race, eventually finishing second. When the series moved to Phoenix the next weekend, both Stewart and Reed crashed out and were injured and Dungey took his first ever win. Dungey would win again at round three at A2 as Stewart rode injured to third place. Later that week, Strewart dropped out of the series with a broken wrist. Monster Energy’s Ryan Villopoto took his third career win at San Fransisco as Dungey threw away a sure win and the points were tightening up. San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill was the story of consistency and his four podiums in a row found him near the top of the point standings in a wild series so far. Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps took the win at San Diego making for four different winners in five weeks. Villopoto would take his second win of the new year at the pink A3 (breast cancer awareness) and was topping the points as the series was heading east towards us in the Midwest. Here are some notes, fun facts and things I saw while out west for Supercross... Austin Stroupe is real fun to watch on a 450. He will be solid in lites East competition. Josh Hansen is incredibly fast, but can’t put together a main event to save his life. His best result was at A2 with a fourth.

Rock River Yamaha went all-out this year and formed a professional motocross team. A new semi was the highlight and riders Weston Pieck, the Sewell bros., and more will be racing for the slick looking team throughout the season. Hung out with Monster Energy’s truck racer Johnny Greaves and Team 2 Racing’s Tom Kallies at A1. Saw Wisconsin’s Cody Wills and former Torque Center tirechanger Mike McQuillin at A1. McQuillin is now Chad Reed’s practice mechanic/ buddy down on Reed’s property outside of Tampa, FL. and has a dream job. Mike Wendricks of MxWebsites and MxBeltBuckle was out west for a five week SX tour. He promoted his websites and traveled to tracks and businesses all over southern California. Tommy Hofmaster raced a one-off race in Sano Diego, just a week after having his first child. Tommy said, “It was fun coming out to do the event, but I definitely wasn’t anywhere near ready for it.” Illinois’ Drew Yenerich raced his first Supercross at San Diego as well and put in a solid performance on his Yamaha 250f in the 450 class. Look for Yenerich to make a bunch of main events once the series heads east. Mike Metzger is now on the Jagermeister freestyle team and can be seen at SX’s around the country. Say hi to the godfather of FMX if you get a chance, he is a complete clown. He also has a new company in The Mob Syndicate. Wendricks, myself and a few others went to the Monster Energy/Road to Recovery go-cart event at P2R raceway in Corona one night. Reed slammed me into the wall one lap and he is just as fast in a cart as he is on his bike.

Steel Shoe Fund Short Track Dan Luchon and Joe Stoppleworth on their Vintage iron.

Fox Lake, Wisconsin - January 23 By Gordon Lunde

T

he Steel Shoe Fund group has run a three hour ice endurance race for some fourteen years, and decided this year to try their hand at short track ice oval racing. Though not strangers to short racing, the past years concentrated on raising money for the fund by promoting the endurance event. The thought this year was to make some extra income for the injured rider fund through another day of events. Unfortunately, a January thaw decided to visit this week and weather conditions were not good for ice racing of any kind. Attendance was down due to the warm weather and recent rains. An ever deepening layer of water covered the track making for some sloppy conditions for the racers. Up first were the 250 class riders. Brandon Clifford of Kenosha, WI put his Red Line Cycles Honda 250F out front at the start and held it there for the race. Pat Stemper of Port Washington, WI came in second. In the youth class, Parker Lange and Jacob Jesko had a good race for the lead over most of the race, but with two laps to go Jesko dropped back and Lange went on to the win aboard his Advanced land Speed/ Murro Salvage/ Millenium Technologies/ Surface Pro Suzuki RM85. The Studded Quad class saw Rob Reitz and Cory Mahlum trade leads several times over the course of the race with Reitz coming out on top. He put his Keith Hesbeck/ Cory Mahlum/ Matt Schmitz sponsored Honda 450 in front on the last lap and held on for the victory. Vintage Twins turned out to be a race of attrition as two of the four entries dropped out due to mechanical problems. Dan Luchon of Wauwatosa, WI. jumped out front on his self sponsored Triumph with Joe Stoppleworth (Yamaha) in tow and Danny Murre third. 34

CYCLE USA, March 2010

Halfway into the race Stoppleworth’s bike succumbed to wet ignition problems. Murre moved into second, but looked to be too far behind Luchon to fight for the lead. However, Luchon, who infrequently races, slowed from a lack of training and practice started moving backwards. The lead came to Murre on the last lap in the last corner where he passed Luchon for the win. Murre on a 650 Yamaha is sponsored by Red Line Cycles and Dad. Unstudded Quads were a field of only two competitors, Andy Hunt and Stu Hunt of Randolph, WI. Andy rode his Honda 400 to victory after Stu spun in turn three. Joe’s Custom Cables and Team Smitty sponsored Nick Smith riding a Kawasaki KX500 rode to victory from the start of the 450/Open class race. Jumping out front and staying there, Smith repeated his heat race result with a convincing win. DJ Slosser, Kevin

Braaksma and Pat Stemper were forced to ride for runner up spots as Smith powered away. Though the event was wet, sloppy and lightly attended because of the weather, the races were considered a success by the promoters and they will hold them again next year prior to the three hour endurance. The following days three hour endurance charity event was a total washout and was moved to the February 21st weekend. Jackson dominates Motokazie Indoor Fergus Falls, Minnesota - January 23/24 By Matt Wellumson

M

innesota, like many other places in the north, is a unique space in which to exist as a Motocross rider, or fan. Our climate is not exactly the talk of the globe, however, we have thousands of people obsessed with this sport. Riders are always working to find new ways to enjoy it, and will travel for hundreds of miles to get a few laps in. With indoor tracks being somewhat new for Amateur level riding, many of us are waking up to the fact that riding year round is an absolute possibility. Again for 2010, Motokazie is hosting their indoor Motocross series in Fergus Falls, a small town located in northern Minnesota. This location is far enough Northeast to attract a host of riders from Canada, as well as North and South Dakota. This makes for some unique racing, similar to national events, as many of these riders have never shared a track with each other, nor do they have any personal experience racing their weekend's competition. Racing took place on both Saturday January 23rd, and Sunday January 24th, making it a full weekend for those who wanted to participate. The first track for 2009 had unique challenges for all levels of racing, with three triple jumps, a deep sand corner, and a step-on-step-off that also acted as a quad jump for riders who fast enough, and dared to try it. The only downside to this event was the weather. Freezing rain, and snow dom-

Nick Jackson had a perfect weekend winning all eight of his “A” class motos.

inated the weekend, making roads dangerous to drive. Not a problem for most hearty northerners, as it added just a few more minutes to their drive to the Red Horse Ranch Arena. Action kicked off fast with the gate drop for 250A which was led by Jesse Frost out of Castlewood, South Dakota (274),

followed closely by an ever changing pack of six riders scratching for podium positions. Frost was able to hold onto the lead for half the race, until Zumbrota MN rider Nick Jackson (308) was able to punch a hole in Frost's lead. The same result happened in the first moto of 450A, in which Frost got out front, fol-

lowed by a churning pack of riders being led by Jackson. As if a copy machine had been engaged during this race, Jackson again found a point in which to take lead in 450A, with the podium ending up with Jackson in first, Frost second, and Josh Shiskoski

out of Winkler Manitoba taking the final podium spot. These exact same results occurred in both motos of 250 and 450A, making those three riders owners their respective spots. The A class races were not the only ones featuring stiff com-

petition to Minnesota Favorites from riders living in surrounding areas. While there was quite a few people doing well from the Dakota's, Canadians had the most podium positions (among non Minnesotans) with 250C, 85cc 7-11, 85cc 9-12, Supermini, and +30B being dominated by Canadian riders holding first place. Two of the riders to watch from Canada consisted of Supermini rider Richmond Morin, and Jordan Devloo. Richmond was able to clinch the lead in both Supermini, and more impressively leading the pack in 250C, on his KTM 105. Devloo’s aggressive riding style and speed make for some exciting racing to watch. While Devloo did well in his 85cc 12-15 race, he had even quicker riders to contend with Blaze Best out of Orono, Minnesota gaining awesome holeshots, his lead became unassailable almost instantly, while Sam Wise and Devloo jockeyed for second and third in both motos. All of these riders were attacking a short triple just before heading back into what some riders called the Sand Barn. Riding for a Reason Racers make a difference at annual dirt bike charity ride.

Allenton, Wisconsin - September 19, 2009

A

crisp, sunny autumn morning, heavy dew on the freshly mowed grass, a slight fog is burning off the perfectly prepped track, and the air is thick with anticipation. But the peacefulness of the morning is getting quickly replaced by a parade of pick-up trucks, the lively chatter of voices, and an occasional rap as someone starts their bike. The quiet valley is being transformed by race trailers, banners and colorful E-Z ups. Sounds like a lot of race mornings, but these riders are not here to race, there’s no gate, no trophies, no prize money… they’re here to ride, they’re here to give back. Each fall, for over ten years now, Mike’s Motorsports has been holding an annual Dirt Bike Charity Ride on their practice track near Allenton, WI. It’s a day filled with free riding, motorcycle games and unusual contests. All the proceeds are then donated to an individual or family in need. Over the years, participants have raised more than $15,000 that has helped people from Wisconsin all the way to Brazil. This year’s event was held Sept. 19th, a warm, sunny Saturday with temps in the 70’s and enough of a north breeze to keep the dust at bay. About seventy-five riders came out, many with their families. Participants were asked to make a donation of $30 (or more) for riding, lunch and door prizes. The morning consisted of getting everyone signed up and two hours of open riding on the “old school” style motocross track. Weeks of hard work by volunteers including Mike’s dad and employees had the track in

great shape, and thanks to the Allenton and Neosho Fire Departments, it was watered too! After a tasty lunch, everyone gathered for a rider's meeting, where the afternoon’s activities were explained and Mike shared a little about how the Charity Ride got started and some of the people it’s helped. “We began about 10 years ago with a ride to raise money for our neighbor’s baby daughter, Makayla, who needed a liver transplant.” Inspired by the enthusiasm of the riders, and the

difference they could make, they’ve done it every year since. “…together we’ve helped over ten families in need. People like Justin Navine and Bob Idzikowski, who are back healthy and here riding with us today.” Proceeds have been donated to injured racers, individuals with cancer or other severe diseases, and one year to impoverished children in Vicosa, Brazil. Because the monies are raised by dirt bikers, they always try donating it back to someone with a motorsports connection. The activities after lunch were not the normal disciplines of Motocross or Dirt Track or even Hill Climb, no, today’s races would be; Egg, Slow and Relay, along with everyone’s favorite, the Poker Run. The Poker Run consisted of about a 2.5

mile course running throughout the property, incorporating the motocross track, woods, tractor lanes and fields. Each rider went around five laps, stopping each lap to get a card, the best poker hand won. Everyone ran at once, at their own pace, so you were always riding with someone, adding to the fun. The rest of the afternoon was filled with other unique games designed to test the skill (and luck) of the riders. At the end of the day, when the games were done, it didn’t matter to the riders if they won or lost, or how they finished. It was evident by their attitudes, their helpfulness and their enthusiasm, that everyone knew today it was about having fun, giving back and helping others. It was about remembering how good we’ve got it and being thankful. Between the laughter, good hearted jabbing, and more than a few stories, the prizes generously donated by businesses and even fellow riders were all given away. As the trucks and trailers began to leave, peacefulness was returning to the valley, but what was anticipation in the morning, had been replaced by the satisfaction of having done something worthwhile. THANK YOU! To everyone who helped make this years Charity Ride a success. The volunteers, riders, Fire Depts., sponsors, MSR, Moose, CMJ Raceway, Bell Ind., Fly and the individuals that donated their time & money. Together we rose over $1900! You are making a difference in people’s lives, I am grateful and feel very blessed, I hope you feel blessed too – “No good deed goes unrewarded.” See you next year, Mike Wiedmeyer. Spring Creek Series Awards Night

The champs, in their new jackets. Millville, Minnesota - October 10 By Rolfe Otterness

T

he Spring Creek Super Series Awards night was held at the track in the Comfort Zone VIP suite this year to give everyone a break from the expense of a banquet in these tough economic times, but everyone in attendance still had a great time bench racing and smack talking their competitors as usual. The emcee of the program was once again Mike Quinn, Sr., and he did a fabulous job of running through the many awards handed out to the competitors of the series. There were 327 rider entries qualified with the minimum number of races to be eligible for season points. These were the dedicated riders who made racing a priority this summer, and had a great season of competition on one of the best tracks in the country. Riders who managed to make it to the top of their respective classes took home the coveted championship jackets provided by longtime sponsor Bob’s Cycle Supply, the ultimate fashion statement for style conscious 44 CYCLE USA, March 2010

Racing returns to Fort Atkinson

or those of us that have fond memories of ice racing in Southern Wisconsin, it has been a while since we’ve had much to get excited about. There are a couple great endurance races within an easy drive, and a well developed series further north, but the last several years we’ve been without a local, weekly program. Finally, that’s changing, and the Southern Wisconsin Ice Racing Association’s (SWIRA) series is growing. Lake Koshkonong, south of Madison, WI has seen racing come and go... but this time it looks like we have something we can all count on. With help from the new owners at the Sunset Bar & Grill... yea, the same location we’ve based racing out of in the past, we are back in business. The group leading SWIRA are for the most part hard-core quad racers, and the events so far this year have seen good turnouts in a large variety of quad classes. That said, these are racers that love the sport, and they are offering a good mix of bike classes as well. With the absence of racRiders’ meeting.

ing here over the past few years it will take a while for the bike numbers to rebound, but they will. The effort being put into the events and the series guarantees it will grow. The tracks are well laid out... both the oval, and the longer than usual TT course. Racing this weekend was thrown off a bit with unseasonably warm, and at times, wet weather. Even with that, the racers took to the wet courses and had a great time. The racing day got started with the stock PeeWee Quad riders on the oval. Bryan Wang got the jump on the seven other young riders, and then led every lap for the win. Behind him off the start was Hunter Schultz, Nathan Newton, and Quinton Trainor. By the end of the second lap Autumn Rodell was on the move, working up to fourth. As Wang pulled a small lead at mid-race, Schultz, Newton and Rodell rode wheel to wheel right to the finish line. Austin Morris moved up late in the race for fifth. Cayla Pohlhammer was on a roll when the finals came in her first two classes. After winning the Women’s Open class, she ran

in front of the Quad B class final with a heavy push coming from Jeff Brown. Earlier in the day, Brown managed a last lap pass for the win in the heat race, and he sure looked determined to repeat the move now when it really mattered. The two ran side by side at times, but each effort put in by Brown was matched, and Pohlhammer got her second win, in back to back classes. Cassie Ketterhagen finished third. It was fun watching the PeeWee Shifter Quads hit the track, as the little studded quads got around pretty good for their size. Dylan Sorum had a big jump off the start on the rest of the class and quickly opened up a lead. Hunter Schultz was second, with Tyler Allen looking for a way around as they exited turn two. Allen got a good drive out of turn three on the opening lap to pass into second. As the laps ran down, Allen closed most of the gap to give Sorum a run to the finish, if nothing else to keep him honest and get the spectating crowd’s blood flowing a little more. In the Pro Quad un-studded class, it was all Cody Buckeridge leading Tyler Severson each lap. The two were back at it in the TT course racing as well. Again, Buckeridge grabbed an early lead and then went on for the win. The main event for the Unstudded Quad B class was the biggest of the day with thirteen riders coming off the starting line. A fast start was key in this big class, and Jeremy Schultz had the best reactions leading the pack around turns one and two. Shane Statz was in the mix early before spinning out and dropping

to the back of the pack. With water flying everywhere from the quads, positioning on the track was key. Brett Hanson was in second through most of the first lap before Curt Schultz

dropped him a spot to third. Next, and moving up quick was Brittany Calvert. She came from fifth on the start to pass Curt Schultz out of turn three in the second lap. She wasn’t done, and all the water spraying her didn’t seem to slow this young lady one bit. She pulled to within a quad length of the leader a few times. As the checkered flag came out, Jeremy Schultz held on for the win, Calvert right behind him. Kayla Hanson also worked up to finish fourth, just ahead of Brett Hanson and Steve Jones at the flag. Many of the same front runners were in the lead group when the Un-studded B riders hit the long TT course. This time, as riders slid in and out of top position on the wet track, Curt

that was full of close, and exciting racing all the way to the back of the pack... typical of an unstudded quad class race. Fifty-four year young Curt Schultz was wet, but very happy after taking the impressive win on his Yamaha Raptor. “You had to take it easy out there with all the water on the ice, it is really slippery. It was a good race, and staying in the groove was important. Even in the lead, the water is still really bad as your front tires spray up a lot of water. My sons say this is better for me as I’m older and have more patience. I’ve been doing this for eight or nine years now. I was going to all the races with my

boys, and just thought I may as well race since I’m there.” At twenty-one years old, Brittany Calvert has been riding for sixteen years already, and it shows. “My dad and uncles grew up racing so when my sister and I were little, dad got us into it right away. I’ve been ice racing for sixteen years now.” When asked about racing in today’s conditions we pretty much knew the answer. We had seen Brittany wringing the ice water out of her gear as much as possible between heats and the two main events, and after she got off her quad from the final race, water was littlerly running off her, from head to toe. “It can be really hard to see. I’m totally soaked, shaking, and freezing cold. I’m cold to the core.” One thing about ice racing and quad riders, some of them find no end to how far they go to build their own, unique machines. On the ice, it can at times be an almost anything you build and feel you can ride type of deal. There were plenty of well built machines on the ice today, but the sound alone from one of the Pro class riders definitely turned heads, and caught attention. If nothing else, the machine sounded scary fast... Alan Johnson had his almost totally hand built quad on the track in a couple of the Open classes. Johnson, “It started out as a Yamaha Banshee. I took the motor out and put in a Yamaha R6 (600cc crotch rocket) motor. Pretty much everything on the

chassis has been fabricated out of my shop. It took a lot of hard work and man hours for sure. It is now a 535 pound quad, and with all the power on a slippery track like today its just unreal to try and keep it hooked up. Its a handful in good conditions, but always fun.” While the power of Johnson’s quad caught everyone’s attention, Wayne Richter was using good starts and fast laps to take all three Pro class wins. Richter won both the 450 and Open oval classes, and then the Open TT course ahead of Jeff Hutter and Kurt Schell. Even under what would be considered terrible ice racing conditions, it was great being back at a race in the southern portion of the state. The series has a long term commitment of backing from The Englehart Center

of Madison, and many of the association’s members have brought in associate sponsors. So far so good, now its just time for us bike guys and gals to dust off that ice racing equipment, get involved, and support 2011 the effort. should be an ice racing season area riders look forward to again. Feeding the need, indoors Richmond, Wisconsin January 9 By Michael Anderson

T

he temperature reading said 20 below zero as I pulled into the Amsoil Sandbox Arena parking lot Saturday morning, and yet it looked to be another good turnout for today’s race. What motivates these racers, mothers and fathers to brave these temperatures so early in the morning? Being a racer myself, I would answer simply that motocross is a drug one that doesn’t ever seem to wear off. A drug that has withdrawal symptoms if you don’t get enough. A drug that is legal to pass on to your kids, as so many fathers are now doing. Carrying these thoughts with me I walked through the pit area and then it really hit home. There were so many racing fathers tending to their children’s

bikes and needs. Although some of these dads were current racers, some were not and it was clear to me that they still had the need for motocross, and had found a way to get it through teaching the sport to their children. One of the fastest race families, not only here at the Sandbox but in the Midwest, is the Riehm family out of Annandale, MN. Father Rick Riehm started racing when he was nineteen years-old and he’s still racing today, soon to move into the +50 class. He has two sons racing, Michael and Brandon. Both had racing passed on to them at the very young age of four. Michael, now seventeen, and Brandon fifteen, both hope to become professional racers. Judging from the speed they showed this weekend they are well on their way. Rick now has five grandchildren, and they’re just about ready for bikes.

Bret Holland in 85cc 12-15.

Hunter Ersbo in the Open C class.

Another family at the races this weekend was the Riley family from Watertown, MN. Father Pat Riley is a former Honda factory rider in Japan. He now has three young boys - all racers. Jacob at age eight, Nicholas at seven and Alex five. Alex was full of energy before his race, jumping out of my camera shot exclaiming, “All I want to do is win”. To me, Alex exemplified how every adult racer feels inside while waiting on the starting gate. With three boys racing two classes you can always find Pat at the starting gate. The Riley family undoubtedly shares an addiction to motocross. Among the other families seen this weekend were the Hollands, Cunninghams, Slagels and Tilfords. Paul Holland started racing in the 70’s and now has two sons racing. This weekend Paul’s son Bret Holland tore up the Supermini class. The Cunning-

hams are from Hastings, MN. Father, Brad Cunningham, races +40A, and son Conner races the 250cc class. Both father and son were first place winners this weekend. These two do the motocross drug all year long, racing District 23 during the summer like many of the others. The Sandbox also runs Learn to Ride programs, and one of its students raced for the first time this weekend. Sam Beck from Shoreview, MN raced in the age 9-11 85cc class. He showed no signs of first race jitters while sitting on the gate. Instead he explained how he scored two top scores on the video games located in the lobby area right before his race. Sam raced well, finishing with a smile on his face. The weekend started off with the Open A class. The gate dropped with Mike Bottolfson and Jesse Frost rounding the first corner neck and neck. Mike held off the brakes just a little longer than Jesse into corner two to take the lead. Michael Riehm, who was the favorite to win spun off the line and was in last place. Bottolfson took a five second lead within two laps and never looked back until the last lap. Riehm had slowly worked up from his last place start to come within two bike lengths of Bottolfson. Wisconsin’s Matt Maier also worked up from a bad start to finish third in moto one. Second moto started out with the same two riders, Bottolfson and Frost rounding corner one in the lead. This time Frost held the lead with Ryan Orres from Hastings, MN in third. Bottolfson took the lead on lap two and then checked out for the win and overall. Riehm had a little better start this moto but was making too many mistakes passing through the pack to make it past fourth place. Orres passed Frost who had crashed, to take over second place. Matt Maier rode consistent both motos for third overall. Another great race came from the 250C class. With close to two full gates of racers, there were two qualifying races and then a final. Conner Cunningham, Austin Powers and Hunter Ersbo put in great rides in each moto. In the final Ersbo rounded corner one with the holeshot, Cunningham second and Powers third. By lap three Cunningham passed for the lead going through the back whoops, and held it for the rest of the race. Then it was

Ersbo and Powers changing positions two or three times until the final lap when Ersbo overshot a tabletop and slowed to stay on two wheels. Powers took advantage of this and held it until the end. There were many great motos raced this weekend. It’s clear that motocross is a family sport that will continue to grow through the generations. With video games, computers, and other distractions technology brings, its great to see today’s youth out on the track. South Fork awards banquet Kincaid, Illonois - February 6 By James Pinckard

T

hank you, was the first words that Leroy Harris spoke to the group gathered to break bread, visit with friends, bench race and celebrate the 2009 South Fork Dirt Riders racing season. It was a good year for the track championships as they had some great battles. The hare scrambles and the Midwest Best series backed by Kawasaki, Suzuki and Husquvarna were a success. The FCA camp had a great week here this year with factory Honda rider Andrew Short. We also had Arenacross champion Jeff Gibson racing some of our events. Even with the success of 2009 next year looks to be even better. Leroy stated, “2010 should be great. We are working hard to make improvements on the track, adding more wood chips and giving the riders the best possible track at every event. FCA Midwest Best series will be back with support from Suzuki and Husky. We were not able to get Kawasaki back, but we understand and want to thank them for all the support they have given our track and the series." With all the riders and families feeding

Overall champions. their hunger for food and with thoughts of racing again the crew gave out awards to the best racers from their classes in the championships. The last was the big trophies for the champions of the Midwest best series.

Put the thrill back into your riding!
