ain is liquid precipitation. On Earth, it is the condensation of atmospheric water vapor into drops heavy enough to fall, often making it to the surface. Rain is the primary source of fresh water for most areas of the world. However, most motocross racers don’t like rain on race day and this was the case for this years mx race at Dyracuse MX Park. Rapids Angels again hosted the annual spring race, but due to cold and rainy conditions turnout was on the low side. Mother Nature simply was not kind to the club and riders this year. For those who did tough it out, they provided us with plenty of great racing action. It's hard to get motivated when it is 37 degrees and wet, but most of the racers who decided to race probably would have done so even if it was snowing. All in all, almost 200 entries were on hand to once again tackle the old school sandy terrain. This year the club was looking to add to the tracks with its new 80 acres that it purchased, but with time running short and having to deal with weather they were unable to make the changes. However, if you race in Dist 16,

do not miss the 2010 race as it will most likely be a completely different track. The Rapid Angels were able to still add a new eighteen whoop section but with the conditions, no one was able to really test them out. Like any obstacle, the guys who figured it out were able to make up time. The Quad's were the first to hit the track in the morning and we started with a triple gate drop. The moto was pretty exciting but after a few laps it was hard to tell who was who with A/B/C, all on the track at once. Ryan Mientke from Wisconsin Rapids led them all to the finish. Anyone tempted to complain about the day’s conditions quickly had to keep quiet as little Kendra Randrup also from Wisconsin Rapids shot out to the lead in 65cc 7-11 class and managed to keep upright with her trusty KTM. Getting around the track looked tough for some, but if the kids could make it around, the rest of the riders should be able to make it. If nothing else, complaining became a little harder to do. Kendra ran a steady race ahead of Max Steinhorst and Trevor Deedon, ending up with the class win. Not sure if it was her first 65cc win, but mom and dad were pretty happy. Way to go Kendra! 125Jr was next to rocket out of the gate. Yamaha mounted Cody Fredrick grabbed the holeshot ahead of Cody Steuck. On lap one, Talon Bronk got past Steuck and Jonathan Kraemer and was on a mission to hunt down Fredrick. As the laps clicked off, Bronk continued so slowly gain on Fredrick as Steuck and Kraemer had a good battle going on as well. On the white flag lap, it looked like Fredrick would take the win, but he went down in the back section handing the win to Bronk. He managed to pick up the bike and just finish ahead of Steuck to salvage second. He said he just missed a rut and the front wheel pushed out in one of the corners. 250A was pretty exciting as well. Andy Lieders from Colby, WI took his YZ250 to the holeshot. Jesse Koth, Dustin Hoffman, Bill Hedek and Bryan Anderson all gave chase along with the rest of the pack. By the end of lap two, Hoffman was out front and trying to pull away from Lieders, Koth went down hard at the end of the front straight. It was a nasty crash, and it was good to see him get up after it. Dylan Narel also went down early and had to claw his way up to the front. By mid race Narel had moved into fourth, and was working on Hedek for third. He made the pass in the new whoop section and then went to work on Lieders for second, but just couldn't catch him at the end. Hoffman finished out front. Hoffman also managed to win Open A ahead of Narel and Lieders. He joined Bill Hedek as the only double class winners on the day. Hedek took home the checkers in +25A and +35A.

By this time, the rain had really started to come down and trying to score riders was next to impossible. Good thing the Rapids Angels have a few years of experience scoring and were able to keep everything in order. The 250B moto took off and Cody Fredrick again found his YZ125 out front, but this time he was able to lead wire to wire ahead of David Lieble who kept him honest. Dillon Kau on his KTM managed to fend off Jon Hartman to finish third. The biggest class of the day was 250C class with twentythree riders. Brandon Hoffman on his YZ125 almost got the holeshot but was pinched off by his buddy Billy Nicholson. Hoffman got tied up in the first corner with some of the other riders but was quickly chasing down the leaders. It was evident that the local riders had an advantage in this class. Of course anyone knows, if you practice at Dyra-

cuse throughout the year, you will get better at the track. This is where it gets tricky. Lots of action with riders falling and mud flying everywhere. The order changed quite a bit. The bad news, it was hard to tell who was battling who. In the end, Hoffman went on to win his first C class ahead of Nicholson and local Cody Trickle. Nick Kubowski from nearby Plover, WI was fourth just ahead of Zach Sherman. With the impending hail storm, high winds and more rain, the club decided to call it a day after the first set of motos in the name of safety. Here's hoping next year’s race gets the break it missed out on this time. The track is open with regular hours all summer for open riding... and there’s always the great trails riding as well. For more information, check out the club’s web site at rapidangels.com.

page, or even better yet, a group of these pages will be a great addition to the magazine. This is your opportunity to submit a cool photo, and have a good chance of it getting published. We’re thinking photos that capture a truely memorable moment... someone with their first trophy, or a group photo of you and all your pit buddies. It could be a really cool photo from a mud race you just happened to get. Maybe there’s a track worker that has never really been noticed, but deserves to be, and you get a photo of them flagging or whatever. An off-road ride with a couple friends, and you get a cool shot together in some scenic setting. Perhaps a really good action shot, just good old racing stuff. They don’t have to be on the track photos... people having a good time together at the events is great. Nothing obscene, but fun is good. Clear, close, good photos work. Send your “high-resolution” photo to myphoto@cycleusa.com. Include a note describing the image, the who, where and when along with your name. Editors decisions are final, but we’ll include everything possible. As soon as we get enough submissions, we’ll get the pages started.

From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman I am writing this a few hours after with our meeting with Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. We went into the meeting ready to educate her about our sport and the absurdity of this entire CPSC ruling. Interestingly enough she was totally on top of the issue. She was very well informed and reiterated to us more than once that she does not support the current interpretation of the law by the CPSC. She reassured us that no one that was involved in the passage of the new law ever saw this ban as a possibility, there was never any intent to ban youth recreational vehicles. The legislation was intended to prevent the injury or death of children from the ingestion of lead that is found in some cheap imported toys. Amazing how a pair of government functionaries can twist the intent of the law into a ban. The really good news is that the heads of the CPSC signed a two year stay order. Once the entire commission has voted we have a two year window to get the CPSC under new leadership or get new legislation. Again Senator Klobuchar assured us that she will continue to work for a permanent and acceptable solution. I left the meeting feeling reassured and impressed with the depth of her knowledge on the subject. I want to thank all of you that called and or wrote your representatives and senators to ask that reason prevail. If I have learned anything during this process it is that we can not just sit back and enjoy our sport. If we want to continue to ride and race we will have to get active and stay active. The forces that hate our activity are well organized and better funded, which means we have to work harder and stay active in the legal and legislative process if we are to prosper. Our campaign to enlighten and save youth machines has been a long and

often frustrating endeavor. So again thanks, your efforts are making a difference. Hopefully by the time you receive this you will have had the chance to get your bikes out and get some time on them. I attended the opening event at the Mora MX track and really had a great time. The changes to the track were great, the track changed as the day went on, it got rough and made the racer think and stay on his toes. It brought memories of the old days when racing MX was about turns, and big bumps, on bikes with little suspension. It also brought to me the realization that we really are lucky to have so many tracks of good quality. We have many choices when it comes to racing and the promoters here work hard to keep the facilities updated and changing. In light of declining economy and lower turnouts this is an impressive feat. Iowa is down to only four tracks left this season. When things are not exactly perfect at a facility remember that it could be much worse. We could be losing tracks like many areas of the country. Together we will weather this storm, and come out the better for it. I came to one other realization while on that track. I only know my competitors from the back side. This is not the ideal position to be in. All that winter training didn’t net me any speed but it sure did help me get through all of my motos. I have come to the realization that I will always be at the back of the pack, but

and this is a big but, I am still having fun. As long as I am having fun riding I am going to keep at it. Once you hit a certain age it becomes more about fun than winning, and that is a good position to be in. I would just like to thank all of our Clubs and Promoters that take the time and effort to put on all the events that we have here in Minnesota. You do a great job and make it fun for all us. See you on the tracks and trails on MN. Mike Cycle Usa Contributors Wanted! Are you looking to get more involved in the sport? Covering events may be the way to do it. Logan Nehaus (#337) and Taylor Detrick battle for the holeshot in the 32 rider 250B class.

Record Turnout In Cedar Rapids Cedar Rapids, Iowa - April 11 By Michael Sierens of msactionphotos

W

hat a big difference a year makes. Just one year ago, the members of Cedar Valley Trail Riders were struggling with spring floods that forced the rescheduling of their first two races. The start of the 2009 racing series started under better conditions, much better. It was sixty degrees when practice started at 3:30 and only dropped into the lower forties by the end of the night. The great weather brought out a record 490 entries. There wasn’t a problem with pits either as the east end was opened up to accommodate the additional riders. The track received some minor changes and a general cleanup everywhere. The back section saw the removal of the roller section, replaced by a technical rhythm section that took the riders a few laps to figure out the fastest way through. Ti-Lube’s Gavin Faith was the quickest off the gate and led the pack of eighteen 1424A riders into the first corner to start the 2009 season. Behind Faith was a huge pileup that claimed sevens competitors. Ryan Simonton, Travis Ruepke, Colin Hickman, Blake Netten, Nathan Kimball and Zach Johnson were all involved in the first turn pileup. As the riders scrambled to rejoined the race, Faith and Jeremy Kress quickly pulled away from the pack on the opening lap. Ben Brommel and Devin Reed were battling for third spot. Kress instantly began to stalk Faith as he moved to within a bike length as they blitzed through the whoops. Faith and Kress put on a great show for the fans in the stands as they checked out on third place Brommel. Kress setup the pass for the lead on the final lap in the corner before the whoops by going to the inside of Faith through the whoops.

From there it was a dash to the finish with Kress taking the first win of the season. Brommel held off Reed for third. Tyler Fenneman grabbed the holeshot for the 14-24B/C main event but his lead was short lived as Andy Ney took no time in moving around Fenneman to take the lead just two corners later. Behind Ney was Daryn Parker, Troy Hetzler and Eli Hawes back in fourth. Ney checked out to a decent lead after just one lap, leaving the race for second place. Clark Newbury moved into fifth place on lap number two by dropping Dylan Thomas back to sixth. Levi Kipp was charging through the pack by tripling the infield triple, moving himself into sixth place in the second lap. Levi was on the move as he picked off fifth place just one lap later and was handed a gift when Parker stalled his Kawasaki on the last lap to allow Hetzler, Hawes and Kipp by. The finishing order was Ney with an impressive win with Hetzler in second and Hawes third. In Schoolboy, Kody Pirie rocketed into the lead on his KTM leaving Bobby Hanson and Jordan Ihle in second and third. The three riders separated themselves from the pack and instantly started to battle in the shortened three-lap race. The pack ran single file on the opening lap, but when the second lap started the battle was on. Hanson dove to the inside of the leader Pirie through the whoop section and ran side by side towards the infield section. Ihle was sitting comfortably back in third place just waiting for an opening. On the last lap, Pirie was able to triple the infield section and separate himself from Hanson by two bike lengths. Going to the back section Hanson got held up by a lapper and was forced to the outside. This allowed Ihle to make the inside move to take second place. Hanson was able to regroup and charge back

to battle with Ihle for second, but came up a little short and had to settle for third. In the +30A class, Chad Leidigh won the race to the first turn with Todd Walton and Jamie Bennett in tow. Leidigh led the pack to the finish line triple to finish lap one, but that is where his lead would end. Walton grabbed a handful of throttle through the whoops and blazed by Leidigh to take the lead. Leidigh didn’t let Walton kept him honest for the next lap. Taking the white flag, Leidigh was now feeling the pressure from Bennett as he was showing his front wheel on the inside of the corners. Walton took the win easily but the race for second place heated up as Leidigh slipped another spot back to third as Bennett moved into second place on the final lap. Brandon Moore jumped out to take the holeshot in the 50Sr main event. Behind Moore was Dylan Smith on his LEM. Keaton Zimmerman swept to the outside of the first turn and inadvertently took out the front wheel of Zach Zimmerman, knocking him to the ground. Zack was able to remount and join the race from the back of the pack. Blake Hoag, battling with a foul motor was putting a hard charge in for second place, and was within striking distance of Smith at the end of the second lap. The two fought for the entire moto and were only a bike length apart going into the last corner. They tangled while going up the finish line jump and crashed on the top of the jump. Course workers were quick to help both riders get back on and finish the race. Fourth place rider Drake Hayes closed the gap while they were on the ground, and made it a three-bike race for second. Smith and Hoag jumped back on their bikes and raced for the finish line. Hoag came up a half bike length short and had to settle for third.

Blustery start to trials season Wapello, Iowa - April 5 By Angie Weikert

T

he Observed Trials family started their 2009 season on a freezing note, the weather was a challenge in itself. Holding off the rain & snow on Sunday, the wind played havoc with the riders who braved the cold to ride the obstacles at Kerm’s Cowpasture Classic in Wapello, Iowa. The youth class started out the day with three riders, Clay Cooling once again proving he’ll be a rider to reckon with. Cooling took first place over Jacob Miller and Jacob Loer, all three doing a great job with the mud & hills. Jacob Miller, riding trials for the first time, found out you can‘t let your temper get in the way if you want to ride trials, and Dad found it takes lots of patience & prodding on his side too. Moving on to the Novice class, Jon Adkisson placed first over six seasoned riders, most who competed on dirt bikes instead of trials bikes. Jeff Jack finished second, Adkisson being the only rider to beat Jeff’s first

place run in the history of Kerm’s event. Dennis Pacha, Jeff Franklin, Kenneth Koch & Sam Adkisson finished out the class. The intermediate class was next, Kent Franklin taking first over James Voightlander, who along with his riding buddies, came from Baraboo, Wisconsin and lots of snow to ride the event for the first time. Dale Prouty, Joey Adkisson, Barry Cooling, Kevin Huber & Steve Reed completed the course, all seven riders finishing within 23 points of each other. The Expert class had Dan Loer, Jonathan Weikert & Tim Harker finish first through third. Loer took first after riding over a log & snapping his handlebars in two. After replacing the bars, he still had low points and pulled out the win. The Women’s class, after being added as an official points paying class this year had Jennifer Maupin come out on top with the win as Jessica Weikert battled problems with her GasGas motorcycle. The Women rode one loop, along with the Senior class. Sharing a bike with

Barry & Clay Cooling as Clay took the Youth win.

Dan Loer won the Expert class.

Maupin for the last couple sections, she finished the day like a trooper. Last but not least, the Vintage class made an appearance, showing the trials community what the old bikes cad do. Dan Engebretson took first over Charles Thomas and Jake Weikert, who also was riding his first trials event. The bikes made for quite a show getting over the obstacles made for the newer brands. We would like to welcome our new trials director for 2009, Dan Loer, who is already doing a great job for us this year, and welcome back as our NITRO

president Ralph Littlefield, and Dan & Jennifer Maupin, secretary/treasurer. Thanks for all you do for the Illinois trials riders! Reed takes advantage in St Louis St Louis Missouri - March 21 By James Pinckard Photos by Michael Sierens

arning! “Hearing protection required” should have been posted and printed on every ticket for Round 12 of the AMA Supercross series in the Edward Jones Dome in St Louis, MO. It wasn’t about the bikes, but when the announcer introduced Suzuki rider Travis Pastrana, I thought the roof of the dome was going to blow off! I can say for sure I have never heard a crowd this loud for any reason, or for anyone. Even James Stewart said “I love it, I’m a fan of Travis also.” With the crew from his show by his side, Travis gave the crowd everything he had, and included a back flip upon introduction and after the parade lap with Stewart, Reed and Short. When Travis was asked how it was to back flip and jump things like he does he said “I always wanted to be able to fly, and this is as close as I can get. In fact I am more comfortable in the air than walking, and if you have ever seen me walk you would understand.” Even with Pastrana stealing the preshow, no one forgot the racing was coming next. With a great points battle between James Stewart and Chad Reed, add in a east coast round for the 250 class and you knew it was going to be a great night! In the 250 class the first heat was full of good racing with Missouri Honda rider Vince Friese putting up a great fight, and finishing third behind Kawasaki rider Christophe Pour-

cel and Mat Lemoine. Durham, Keylon, Clarke, Goerke, Gilmore and Parks went to the main. In the second heat Austin Stroupe and Nico Izzi showed they were the fastest of the class pulling away from Honda rider Blake Wharton in third. Sewell, Gills, Thomas, Saylor, Blair and Dally went straight to the main. In the LCQ Ward and T Wharton rounded out the main event. In the 250 main Geico Honda rider Blake Wharton took the holeshot with Suzuki rider Nico Izzi on his heals. Back in the pack, Kawasaki rider Austin Stroupe was the man on the move, climbing quickly into third. With the white flag out Wharton looked strong and took the win. Stroupe was all over Izzi, and passed him for second at the end. In the first heat of the 450 class Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Chad Reed took an easy win with Yamaha riders Jason Lawrence and Josh Grant second and third. Alessi, Tedesco, Voss, T Hahn, Hepler, and Brayton rounded out the rest of the qualifying positions. In the second heat, Alessi, Tedesco, Voss, T Hahn, Hepler, Brayton rounded out the rest of the qualifying positions. In the second heat James Stewart took the holeshot and it looked to be over but while everyone had their

eyes on Pastrana, Stewart went down! With James back up and working his way through the pack, he went down again! Stewart

worked up to qualify, passing Pastrana who would have to go to the LCQ. Out front Geico Honda rider Kevin Windham took the heat win with Andrew Short second and Kawasaki rider Carpenter Paul third. Sipes, Boni, Bowers, Laninovich and Stewart all going to the main. In the Last Chance qualifier all eyes were on the Yellow 199 of Travis Pastrana. When the gate dropped Travis found himself around fifth, but charged through the pack into second only to make a mistake and find himself in a war trading hits with other riders. It was to much for his bike as it came to a stop, steaming as a result of earlier contact. Factory Honda rider Davi Millsaps and Michigan’s Nico Izzi finished third in the 250 class main. Kyle Chisholm

rounded out the field for the event. In the 450 Main, Yamaha rider Josh Grant took the early lead. In the first lap Reed moved into second with Stewart third. On lap three Reed made the pass for the lead and soon Stewart passed Grant as well to move into second and set after Reed. Near the end of the fifth lap Stewart made a pass over the finish line and put the hammer down with Reed and Grant in tow. With Stewart out front, and looking to be on his way to the win on lap fourteen after the whoops he hit neutral on the step up, and went over the bars! Reed flew by to take the win with Stewart second, and Grant third. On the podium Reed said “I want to thank Pastrana for a fun track and thanks to all the fans for their support.” Stewart who did not look happy said “I am tired of giving him wins.” Results: 450: 1.Chad Reed 2.James Stewart 3.Josh Grant 4.Andrew Short 5.Jason Lawrence 6.Ivan Tedesco 7.Mike Alessi 8.Davi Millsaps 9.Kevin Whindham 10.Paul Carpenter 11.Justin Brayton 12.Matt Boni 13.Kyle Chisholm 14.Broc Hepler 15.Josh Hill 16.Ryan Sipes 17.Heath Voss 18.Bill Laninovich 19.Tyler Bowers 20 Thomas Hahn 250: 1.Blake Wharton 2.Austin Stroupe 3.Nico Izzi 4.Matt Goerke 5.C Pourcel 6.Matt Lemoine 7.Steven Clarke 8.Daniel Blair 9.D Durham 10.Shane Sewell 11.C Ward 12.J Thomas 13.Cody Gilmore 14.T Parks 15.J Saylor 16.V Friese 17.S Dally 18.K Keylon 19.T Wharton 20.K Gills

Gates opens with Grantsburg wins Grantsburg, Wisconsin - April 5 By Bob Chase Photos by PhotoPohl

T

he District 23 kicked off the 2009 motocross season at the sandy confines of the Grantsburg Motocross Park. The temperatures were a bit chilly, but Bruce Gates was setting a hot pace, easily topping the competitive +25A and 30A classes. Nearly 230 entrants made the trip, despite many having to clear the snow off their trucks before they could load up. Upon arriving, they found that the latest snowstorm had missed Grantsburg, and that the track was in excellent condition. There were many cancellations last April, both for the hosting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders, and the district in general. This year was just warm enough that the Arrows were able to host both this practice/race weekend and a practice the week before. That event, dubbed Sand Blast 2009, was believed to be the first outdoor motocross event in over fifteen years to be held in the Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin area during March. The +25A class was relatively early in the order, and the first moto was Gate’s initial appearance. Tim Zebro led briefly, but Gates

was by before the first lap was over and proceeded to pull away. Sheldon Fratzke had his 250 two-stroke singing as he quickly worked up to second. Bill Medek, a regular front-runner at the track, was third. They stayed that way to the checkers, followed by Robert Kohl and Pat McNamara. The second moto played out much the same way with Gates, Fratzke, and Medek again 1-2-3, making the calculations for the overall quite simple. Rory Horner finished fourth in the moto, for fourth overall, with McNamara rounding out the overall top five. The 30A races were later in the order, and included a few different players, but for Gates, the results were pretty much the same, leading every lap of both motos. In the first moto, Medek was second early, but fell. The Straight Arrows moto-chair, Charlie Forrest, was there to take advantage. The moto ended with Gates and Forrest gapped out, and Zebro getting by Medek on the last lap. 40A winner Chuck Thompson rounded out the top five. In the second moto, Gates again was jetting away by the end of the first lap, this time with Zebro in tow. They finished in that order, followed by Medek, Forrest, and Norman Miesen. Overall, it was Gates, Zebro, Forrest, Medek, and Thompson.

Mark Brunsburg charged to a hard-earned victory in +45.

Aaron Hansen (far right) gets the early jump in the first moto of 14-24B.

A few new classes were added to District 23 this year, but on this day, they weren’t too well attended. A 65 7-11 class was added, allowing riders with 65’s to ride two classes with one bike, but at this track, none of the riders, or more likely, none of the rider’s parents, opted to double their track time. There were no takers on the +60 class either, which some might argue would indicate their wisdom. In +55, Danny Buckwalter rode to the inaugural victory and the early points lead. The 125cc only class was upgraded to a points-paying class this year. Six riders signed up, but in the end, the battle for the lead was youth versus experience. Shane Rhode took a close second moto win for the overall, fending

off veteran sand master, Ross Thompson. Twenty-five riders entered three classes, but none could quite pull off the triple. Besides Gates, several other riders were able to win two classes. Torsten Strom topped 50cc Oil-Injected 4-8 and 50cc Multi-speed 4-8, Brandon Reihm won 85cc 12-15 and Supermini, Keenan Strom took the overalls in Schoolboy 12-16 and 250C, Fratzke won 250A and Open A, Aaron Hansen swept Open B and 14-24B, and reigning Girls class champion, Shayana Wilson, celebrated her birthday with a victories in the Girls 9-13 and Women classes. one as if by order! Once again, and just as always, weather was a factor at the AMA Area Qualifier at Hangtime MX Park. I can’t remember the last qualifier that wasn’t hampered by poor weather conditions. On Friday Reads Racing held an open practice that allowed riders to get familiar with the track. Saturday was blessed with mostly sunny skies and only chilly temps. Sunday was when the trouble began. Reads Racing made the decision to stop the event after the first round of motos due to poor track conditions. As usual you'll get some complaints over whether or not the racing should continue, but only minutes after the race was called, a downpour occurred that would have silenced even the most serious of mud racing competitors. The track was done! Saturday began with the same type of energy that all qualifiers do. Lots of whispers and gossip being spread about. Who was here, and signed up for what classes. With over 500 entries on Saturday alone it was going to be an exciting day of racing. 250B Stock, division one staged to fill the gate and open the show. Shelby Landis of Monroeville, IN was quickest to the turn but was snuffed out by Joey Higgins of New Castle, IN. The rhythm Higgins was groovin' to was awfully fast on this new track design. He seemed prepared to run that pace until the checkers, and Chris Antolak of St. Charles, IL was rollin' right with him. Brady Baugher of Claypool, IN kept up with the leaders in the early stages also, but there was another kid closing in on him, Eric Saunders of Lakeville, IN. Saunders shot around Baugher on lap one to introduce himself to the front of the pack. By the third time around Saunders not only got around Antolak, but managed to carry enough speed to challenge Higgins. It was a shock to Higgins and the fans who were astonished at the corner speed Saunders used to negotiate the right handed off-camber corner at the end of the section. Saunders slipped out to a 40 yard lead after his final lap. Derrick Booher of OH finished in fourth. 250B Stock division two was up next. Kyle Biggins of Spencerville, IN really exploded off the line. Josh Philbrick of MI made second his with Ohio’s Zach Rinard third. Chad Bedard of KY and Logan Pfleiderer were protecting their lines in fourth and fifth while watching things unfold in front of them. It was a three way battle for the lead thru the top section. It was almost scary watchin' them run three wide. Biggins let Philbrick get around for the lead, but took it back again at the 120' tabletop. At the same time Bedard was working on Rinard trying to discover a 20

CYCLE USA, May 2009

weakness, but Rinard was showing no signs of slowing. Biggins started the second lap in the lead. Zachary Coons of Veron, WI was riding a quiet fourth after two with Logan Pfleiderer in fifth while those in front of them were becoming battle scarred. Biggins faded at the end of two and seemed to just run out of steam, dropping to eighth. Rinard and Philbrick swapped some plastic a few times allowing Bedard to close in. Philbrick was making mistakes trying to make the pass on Rinard and it cost him as Bedard captured second. With a lap to go Rinard could feel the heat and tried to ride smooth, but Bedard bested Rinard to win the moto with Philbrick third and Coons a very respectable fourth. Pfleiderer fifth. In the main Philbrick beat Saunders in with Rinard third, but Saunders won the overall by going 1-2. Philbrick took second with a 3-1 as Rinard settled for a 2-3 and third overall. In the 85 9-11 Stock class Henry Miller of Rochester, MN took home multiple wins for the overall. He obviously came with no intention of finishing any worse than first. Miller looks like he'll be the next hot young gun to come out of MN. Miller rode uncontested and looked like he had no worries. As the 250A started filling the gate, fans slowly shifted to the 120' tabletop for a good view of the action. Justin Weeks out of Cincinnati, OH has a following at Hangtime MX Park even though he's only raced there during qualifiers. He is one rider people want to like. Weeks started by giving space to anyone that could cause disaster. Dustin Pulley of Columbia City grabbed the lead to begin and looked like he might be able to hold it. Christopher Damm of Frankfort, IL was giving chase with Chris Carr of OH. After two laps Damm and Carr found a slower pace to be more suitable which allowed Weeks to move on and take over second. Weeks then railed a left handed uphill off-camber corner at break neck speed to breeze by Pulley. Devon Adair of Munich, MI moved up and began the third lap in third with Steven Squire of Indianapolis, IN behind him in hot pursuit. After Adair and Squire squeezed around Damm and Carr, no more changes occurred in front. Weeks left the pack like he was late for a date. It wasn't even close at the finish. Weeks went 1-1 to win the overall. Pulley, who finished behind Weeks in moto one but didn't fair as well in moto two with a fourth place finish, but it was good enough to give him second overall. Carr was able to pull out a third in moto two to go 5-3 for third overall. In Womens 14 plus, Cady Pressler of Columbia City, IN was in charge of the train. She acted as a locomotive with a cow plow mounted to the forks. Nothing was gonna

slow her down. Cady made quick work of the field even though she was under strict orders to not take any chances, and to only do what was necessary to ride a good race. Cady had already qualified days earlier and was at Hangtime to challenge herself. On Friday she soared the 120' tabletop with the best of the boy A riders, but was told not to take the leap on Saturday, and to be careful since she would not face such challenges at the Nationals. Cady rode safe on Saturday as promised and was turning lap times as fast as the boy B riders. This is your year Cady, I believe it in my heart. In 450A Danny Caudill of Denver, IN grabbed an early lead to begin while being chased by Chris Carr of Uniontown, OH and Gregory Durivage of Waterville, OH. Justin Weeks started fourth. After one, Weeks first challenged Durivage and was successful moving to third. Caudill and Carr were challenging each other for the lead. This allowed Weeks to close and then take over the lead. He truly is an exceptional rider. Weeks went 1-1 making his weekend complete with victories all day. Weeks is only five letters, and easy to read. I'm looking forward to seeing his name scrolling on my TV screen in the coming years while watching pro events. As good as that all sounds, the ride of the day had to be belong to Eric Saunders of Lakeville, IN. Saunders was very fast in moto one of the 450B Stock class. He gained a vast amount real estate between himself and the pack in his first outing. As the gate dropped to begin the second moto, he launched from the pad and looped out. Whether he got tangled or just rutted the rear tire is all circumstantial. Saunders is new to the 450, and that the 450 might be a bit more bike than he is used to throwing around. That said, it was now time for Saunders to prove any doubters wrong. He caught the back of the pack and made quick work of nearly half the riders by the time

he was approaching the crossover. I stood there mouth wide open and speechless. I completely blocked out the leaders. My eyes were focused on the jet that was flying way under any radar. The next lap he was around three more riders, the next lap another three. It was looking like he may just finish top 5. On his last lap he polished off a few more and was now in second, about 50 yards from the back of Zachary Coons. Saunders placed second at the stripe to go 1-2 for the overall. I'll say it now and with conviction, Eric Saunders will turn pro, and be successful. He is the real deal. D23 Quads Riders Open Season Mazeppa, Minnesota - April 19 By Mike Nelson

fter the long winter off, everyone was more than ready to get back on track for a fresh season of racing. The staff at Hurricane Hills, led by Jeff & Susan Gray were ready to kick off the new Quad season and put their new starting gates to use in competition. The new gates were provided by Root River Power Sports after last season, who were also on hand with their traveling parts truck to provide on site support for those untimely breakdowns. Youth rider Amanda Thayer showed up with a new ride in the 90 Production class. Dominic Bartell was one of many riders that showed up with a new graphics package to show off. Fans were also given the opportunity to see 4 year old Jayse Hicks in his first race ever, running in the 50cc stock class. Not quite top five material yet, young Hicks competed in both motos, and when I asked him if it was fun, he just looked up with a shy smile and a positive nod.

Dominic Bartell.

Riders that showed up for Saturday practice got the opportunity to run their machines on virtually every type of track condition they can expect to see over the season before the weekend was over. What started out as an almost summer like weekend quickly turned around to remind us that it was still April in Minnesota. With virtually no rain over the past few weeks the well groomed and watered track Saturday morning quickly turned dry, loose and dusty and remained that way for the rest of the day. After practice the clouds rolled in and brought some well needed rain along with much cooler temps. Early morning race day practice runs were a little slick but by the time the racing

Williamson, Rigsby rock Log Road opener Bronson, Michigan - April 4 By Bart Newman

Jacob Williamson was on the gas to win in the 85Jr. and 85 9-13 classes.

CYCLE USA, May 2009

unny skies welcomed nearly 300 entries in to a new era of Michigan Motocross as Log Road played host to the GLMX’s, Michigan Mafia Championship Series season opener. The 85Jr. and Sr. class was full of talent today as Jacob Williamson and Denver Rigsby took the wins in their respective classes. In 85Jr. action, it was clear from the drop of the first gate drop who the fastest rider on the track was as Williamson was stretching the throttle cable hard to nail the holeshot in both motos. Following early was Jacob Edison, Austin Hayes with the Weltin boys, Bryce and Roman in tow. Williamson has taken a liking to the Log Road facility and it showed as the speedy young lad began to pull away from Edison and Hayes who were going at it like two old ladies reaching for the last National Enquirer at the supermarket checkout. Williamson rode the balance of the moto mistake free to take the win. Hayes hit his stride before the halfway point and opened up a lead on Edison that he held to the checkers for second, and Bryce won the Weltin brothers battle with Roman crossing the line fifth. In moto two, Williamson once again exited turn one on the back wheel with the lead. Try as they might, no one in the class could match his speed and another moto win was his. It looks as though Williamson has had his nose to the grindstone all winter, which is bad news for the 85cc riders. Edison followed Hayes once again showing him a wheel here and there. B. Weltin was next with Hunter Braun clawing his way inside the top five in moto two as well as overall laying down an impressive ride. In the 85Sr. class, it was Rigsby who had the starters number all day and used it to his advantage nailing down a pair of starts to take the moto wins and his first GLMX overall of the season. The fight for the last two podium spots was tight. Ryan Coughlin had his KTM smoking in moto one, crossing the line in the runner up spot while holding off Sean Miller, Koby Conrad and Brody Bell. Miller got the jump on Conrad and Coughlin in moto two as the trio battled again for the runner up spot behind Rigsby. Conrad picked his spot and dropped Miller to third with a great inside outside pass to lock up second in the moto and overall. Miller held off Coughlin to cross the line in third for the second time with Bell rounding out the top five.

In support of injured rider Jeff Heaston, Log Road had for fun money moto as nearly 20 riders took to the track and many more donated to raise over $300 for our fellow rider and friend. The Loretta Lynn’s Mideast Area Qualifier is up next at Log Road on May 9/10th with an optional practice Friday afternoon. With the expected large turnout of riders hoping to fill the gates at the dude ranch, a great weekend of racing is guaranteed. toney Lonesome MC held their first hare scramble event of the 2009 season on Sunday, April 19th. The property can consist of very challenging terrain when it is dry, let alone a wet spring day. The skies decided to open a window in the rain just long enough to run all three events, but not before it provided a good soaking all night long. The day started with the 50cc PeeWee classes blasting into the slick and slimy trails. Hunter Huser and Tanner Guerrettaz battled for the lead in the Pre-mix class with Guerrettaz finally landing his first win of his racing career. The Injector class also ended with Jacob Stark finishing on top of the podium for the first time in four years of racing at Stoney Lonesome. The Mini classes all lined up, anxious to head into the hilly property in what they hoped to be a manageable course considering the weather the night before. The first few laps of the super mini class was led by Wolfgang Huser before he gave way to Mathew Hatchet who held on for the win. The 85cc class was dominated by Luke Chilman who put on a clinic in riding the slick and muddy terrain. Keagen Lee moved up the 85cc class a year early, and charged the entire

race eventually coming in third only eleven seconds behind Taylor Day. The 65cc class had a similar clinic, put on by Michael Witkowski, completing nine laps with Eric Douglass in second place finishing eight laps. Looking at the big bike event, we saw 101 riders leave the starting line, with eleven riders finishing five laps. The checkpoint recorded a total of 315 passes through. While John Robbins won the 2008 Stoney Series, Jeff Cregg won every race he participated in during the series, missing one for the Mid-South Championship Banquet. Cregg set the pace early in the race leading the pack through the checkpoint on the first lap with a 14:42 lap time. Following close behind was Robbins and Jordan Johns, separated by 0:06. Tyler Tischler was running in forth followed by Jeff Cregg climbing out of a creek crossing. Nathan Sullivan. The course consisted of six plus miles covering most of the property, but laid out with the looming weather conditions in mind. We watched as Luke Chilman on his two riders made the way to a dominating

Heavy and Light A holeshot into the woods (Jeff Cregg leading).

Saunders speedy at RedBud

#411 Tim Walker leads the 14-24 field around turn one with #449 Eric Saunders, #10 Daniel Poyner and #394 Mike Tomanck in tow. Buchanan, Michigan - April 18 By Bart Newman

R

edBud MX welcomed nearly 400 entries as sunny skies shone on the legendary facility built by motocross visionary Gene Ritchie over 30 year ago. The crowd was not disappointed as the track was in perfect condition. A field of twenty-six went to war in the 14-24 class, and none were able to knock Eric Saunders off the top spot. As the pack rounded turn one in the first moto it was the Championship Powersports Tim Walker out front with his throttle to the stop. Walker had company as Saunders, Eric Senk and Daniel Poyner were hot on his heels as the class launched off the Ski Jump and out of sight. Both Saunders and Senk displaced Walker in the valley and were on the gas. Saunders was running a 450 while Senk’s weapon of choice was a 250, and Saunders used the extra power to his advantage. Macdonald fought his way up from a rough start and was all over the rear fender of Walker as lap two went to the score sheets. A great inside move before the table top sealed the deal for Macdonald, who now was chasing Senk. Saunders continued to hold his lead over Senk at about five seconds until the checkered flag came out. Senk crossed the line hoping to better his position in moto two. Macdonald was off the leaders pace, but not by much, and had to settle for third with Walker and Poyner rounding out the top five. In moto two it was once again the fast guys out front, only this time around Mike Tomanck and David

28

CYCLE USA, May 2009

Merrill were also in the mix as the field disappeared. Saunders was riding well but Senk is no slouch, and followed Saunders yellow fender up the Monza wall with Tomanck and Merrill just a sliver back. Saunders used his scooter’s extra motor to keep Senk at bay throughout the moto to lock up his second win, good for the day’s overall. Senk crossed the line in the runner-up spot again. Merrill recovered from a first moto seventh to put himself in a fight for the last spot on the podium overall with a third in moto two. Tomanck overcame an opening moto DNF to battle his way back inside the top five with a solid fourth. Walker crossed the line in fifth to which was good enough to earn third overall for his efforts. Over on the KTM mini track it was the Austen Hubbard that rules the roost as the young lad turned in a double win to take top honors in the 50cc 4-8ss class. Jaden Taylor crossed the line next in both motos ahead of the always charging Kaden Parmley who would fill up the last step of the podium. L

eisure Time opened the newly formed Midwest MX Super Series with a perfectly groomed track that had been lightly watered most the night before, by monther nature that is. The riders who showed up Sunday expected a really wet race or possibly a cancellation. The riders were treated to some of the best conditions on a track that demanded great stamina and an aggressive riding style. All the rain in the area missed the track, and the 80% all day rain forecast never materialized. The Open B class started the day with Kawasaki rider Aaron White taking the overall win in the Open B class. This was Aaron’s first race in over a year and on a new bone stock KX450. His other KX450 had major suspension work completed and had been stolen out of his garage just days before the race. Next up was the +30B class. At the drop of the gate Robert Hinch led seven other riders into the first turn with his Kawasaki followed by Yamaha rider, Jason Martin. The duo immediately pulled away from the crowd and by the halfway point Martin had found a way around Hinch for the lead and eventual win. The second moto, Jim Hagenseker aboard an YZ250 two-stroke was the holeshot leader with Hinch and Martin following. BeDillon Ramey working one of the Leisure Time sand corners.

fore the three riders had cleared the first jump, Hagenseker was passed by Hinch and Martin. The second race pretty much mirrored the first except at the halfway point Hinch seemed to be in better condition and opened a large lead on a fading Martin. After five grueling laps Hinch secured the overall while Martin claimed second. Ralph Suges aboard a Honda CR250 crossed the finish in third, which gave him third place for the day, relegating James Davis who earned a third in moto one to fourth and fourth overall with his Honda. William Reader scored double victories in the Schoolboy and 250B classes on his Yamaha. The 250C class provided the closest racing of the day with Matt Brown and his Yamaha

claiming a very close win in moto one over a southern Indiana rider, Robert Fleckner and his KTM. In the second moto, Devin Oestreich grabbed the lead aboard his Honda after miscues by Brown and Fleckner. At the conclusion of the race, Devin’s 3-1 scores were good enough to secure the overall. Matt earned second overall with a 1-4 tally while John Baer earned a third overall based on his 4-3 moto scores. Fleckner slipped to fourth. The day ended with a lot of exhausted riders who came to the track expecting a wet rainy day but were rewarded with a great sand track that rewards the physically fit rider. Now the riders prepare for round two of the Midwest MX Super Series at Wildcat Creek on May 10th. It isn’t too late to get involved. Results: +30B: 1.R. Hinch 2.J. Martin 3.R. Suges +50: 1.T. Easter Sunday

Opens MX Season at Aztalan Lake Mills, Wisconsin - April 12 By Dave Hollub

W

ith the weather forecasters talking about cold, rain, and even some snow in the week leading up to the Aztalan motocross opener, it was starting to feel like a replay of the 2008 season opener that was rained out. Luckily the forecasters were wrong, the week was sunny and dry allowing the track crew to get out and have the track prepped and ready to race on Sunday. Sunrise Sunday morning brought cool temperatures in the mid 30s, but no precipitation making the 460 entries a very happy group. The track was nearly perfect, and as the day went on the temperature heated up as did the racing action. First class out was Peewee Senior, and when the gate dropped Dylan Densow blasted out onto the track to take the holeshot with Eddie Norred half a bike length back. By the end of lap two Norred was gaining some 32 CYCLE USA, May 2009

breathing room while Densow now had to fight off both Peter Paddock and Dane Klinger. Norred continued his pace to take the checkers while Paddock slid into second with Klinger claiming third. The second moto holeshot was a repeat as Densow again was first onto the track with Norred alongside. Norred was quick to move into the lead. Dylan Broberg was charging hard and kept the two leaders in his sites looking for any chance to take the lead. On lap two, just after the tunnel jump Norred went down. As Densow passed him Norred was remounting his bike and quickly back into the chase. Norred quickly caught up to Densow and dove inside to pass back into the lead. Norred held on for the moto win and the overall with a 1/1 finish. Densow (4/2) took second overall with Klinger (3/4) finishing up the top three. Next up was Peewee Junior, and Dennis Gritzmacher grabbed a big holeshot over the rest of the pack. By the end of lap one Gritzmacher was in the lead with Brennan Wages

close, looking for a chance to move out front. A great battle was developing for third place as Dylan Duclos fought hard to hold both Braden Warner and James Schmeling back. Warner was able to fight his way past Duclos as they passed the scoring tower but Duclos quickly passed him back. On lap four Warner came off the tunnel jump hard and moved past Duclos into third while Schmeling slid through before Duclos was able to close the door. Wages was quick to grab the moto two holeshot followed by Gritzmacher and Schmeling. Wages looked to be hard to beat this moto until on lap two in the barn section he bobbled enough to let Gritzmacher take over the lead followed by Schmeling and Warner. By the end of lap three Wages was back into second. Gritzmacher was able to cruise to the finish and take the overall win while Wages (2/2) was second and Schmeling (4/3) was third overall.

Unlimited A class gave the first glimpse of this season’s crop of A riders, and the outlook is very exciting. When the gate dropped Jason Erdmann was the fastest out onto the track with Ryan Hughson less than a bike length back. By the time the pack hit the plateau on lap one Hughson was in the lead with Erdmann and Matthew McGrath right behind. On lap two Erdmann bobbled in the west end and McGrath moved into second. While all this was going on Joseph Dretzka was flying through the pack from a last place start, and by the second time over the plateau he was in a solid third place. Dretzka moved into second in the barn section and started chasing Hughson for the lead. On lap four McGrath stalled his bike and Benjamin Carlson rode by into third. The running order stayed Hughson, Dretzka, and Carlson to the checkers for moto one. The moto two holeshot was again Erdmann’s, but this time Carlson was right there with him. Hughson was third followed closely by Dretzka. Before lap one was over Dretzka had moved up into second followed closely by Carlson. Hughson made his move on lap three and grabbed third place with Cesar Vega now in fourth. On lap four in the west sand section Dretzka passed Erdmann for the lead which he held to the checkers. Dretzka’s 2/1 finish gave him the overall with Hughson (1/3) grabbing second and Erdmann (4/2) third. Dretzka later commented, “The track was good, and the traction was great. The ground was still a little frozen so there were still some clumps but overall it was pretty good. First moto I ended up last in the holeshot and I was able to come back strong, I just couldn’t get the guy at the end. In the second moto luckily there was a slick spot out there and the guy got a little wobbly and I went by, so it worked out. I need to thank Sportland 2 and my dad, thanks.” In Senior +50 the holeshot went to Suzuki mounted Phil Berndt with Allen Brhely right on is rear wheel. By the time everyone was heading over the plateau it was Brhely out front with Berndt and Greg Niles pushing him hard. On lap three as they passed the start straight Edward Mehring was reeling in Niles. Berndt was able to make a pass on Brhely for the lead as they jumped the double after the start straight and Niles was still holding off all of Mehring’s pass attempts. The finish order was Berndt, Brhely, and Niles. Moto two was once again Berndt’s in the holeshot but before they jumped the first double on the track Brhely caught enough traction to take away the lead. Niles was holding down third place but this time it was Daniel Glowacki chasing him. On lap three in the west end Glowacki passed Niles and as the leaders jumped the plateau Berndt took the lead. Brhely rode hard but just couldn’t find the opening to make the pass before the finish. Lap four had Mehring charging hard and he was able to get past Niles to finish fourth. The overall win went to Berndt (1/1) with Brhely (2/2) second and Mehring (4/4) claiming third. Sportsman B/C was large enough to again be split into two gates, and in division two Dan Hruby out powered everyone into the first CYCLE USA, May 2009

corner. Joshua Philbrick was quick to take over the lead before the pack jumped the plateau on lap one. Hruby soon had Kody Kamm and Colton Karl pressuring him. Kamm made his move in the barn section and put his sites on Philbrick and the lead. Hruby battled hard with Karl but eventually Karl won out with the pass. Philbrick and Kamm had a running battle going as they pushed hard, and the gap back to third place quickly grew to about eight seconds. At the end of lap three Kamm was in the lead which he held to the checkers. The holeshot in moto two went to Karl on his Honda with KTM mounted Kamm ready to move up. By the halfway point in lap one it was Kamm in the lead with Philbrick following and then Karl third. Once again the two leaders distanced themselves from the pack while Karl had to hold off challenges

from Jacob Luginbuhl. Kamm (1/1) ended up taking the overall, with Philbrick (2/2) second and Karl (3/3) holding on for third. Lites C split two was full of fast up and coming riders and in moto one it was Derek Denruiter grabbing the holeshot with Ryan Weber less than a bike length behind. Denruiter held the lead all the way to the finish but Weber was quickly +50 class winner challenged by Matt LaFon, who got by in Phil Berndt at the plateau jump. the east section. Denruiter took the win with LaFon second and Weber third. The second moto holeshot went to Denruiter while a corner crash held up most of the pack. Both LaFon and Cody Horvat were able to get around the downed rider without much delay as they went on to chase Denruiter. On the first trip over the plateau it was Denruiter in the lead with LaFon, Blake Parsell, and then Horvat. LaFon was closing in on Denruiter and on lap two, and just before the freeway section found a big enough opening to get by into the lead. Despite being pushed hard, LaFon held on for the moto win. Parsell looked like he was going to take third with a great ride but a problem ended his day on lap four moving a hard charging Weber into a third place finish.

LaFon (2/1) took the overall, while Denruiter (1/2) had to settle for second and Weber (3/3) finished up the top three. The Senior +45 class had eighteen riders on the line, and first to the holeshot corner was Frank Dunn with Jeff Ramsay close behind. As they went over the plateau on lap one Dunn was still up front with Phil Berndt second and Mike Boyden third. In the barn section Jonathan Hyde was on the throttle and by the time everyone was starting lap two he had moved to second from a fifth place start. Jeff Ramsay was holding onto third with Berndt looking for a chance to pass. Midway through lap three Hyde slipped past Dunn for the lead. On lap four as they went through the sand on the west end Ramsay passed Dunn for second place. Moto one ended up Hyde, Ramsay, and then Dunn. The moto two holeshot went to Ramsay with Boyden in second. Dunn charged hard and by the time he went over the plateau he was in the lead with Berndt right behind. In the barn section Ramsay and Hyde slipped past Berndt and both were gunning for Dunn’s hold on the lead. As Dunn hit the plateau on lap two it was Hyde with the little extra as he jumped past, and into the lead. The sand by the barn gave Ramsay the edge he was looking for as he passed Dunn to take over second. In the end it was Hyde (1/1) on top of the podium followed by Ramsay and Dunn. In the Open A first moto Vaughn Mays pushed his Yamaha around the holeshot with

Jason Erdmann on the outside. Matthew Menzer was quick to jump in and by the time the class was a half lap into the moto it was Menzer out front and Ryan Hughson second and Matthew McGrath third. Hughson pushed Menzer all moto to the finish. McGrath had his hands full keeping Benjamin

Carlson behind him. On lap three Aaron Lehr found an opening and slid by both riders for third. In moto two it was Mays around the holeshot first again with Menzer following. Mays looked to be on a mission to make up for his first moto sixth place finish as he Pope

Wet Crossroads Qualifier Mason, Illinois - April 18-19 By James Pinckard

W

hen Nadine opened Crossroads MX Park to host races she thought it would be a lot of things, but on this weekend it was a dream maker. Every racer who ever crosses a starting gate dreams what it would be like to race Supercross and Nationals. Then they all dream of going to the biggest amateur event in the world, the Annual National championship at Loretta Lynn’s Dude ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN. Riders from twentyone states made the journey to Mason, IL for a chance to advance in the qualifying process. The weather on Saturday was a dream come true with the track rough, and picture perfect conditions. On Sunday the weather turned into a nightmare for some as rain started to fall Saturday night, leaving the track deep in mud and the vehicles in the pits having to be towed out with a dozer! I want to say hats off to all the riders who rode, they have the heart of a champion. Some of the riders coming off the track, you could see nothing but a smile, knowing they are one step closer to their dream. All those moving on to the regional’s “Good Luck!” On Saturday, the biggest class of the day was the Super Mini 1 with forty riders on the line. In the first moto it was Suzuki rider Jace Owen taking the win with Honda rider Colin Thomas second and Logan Karnow third on his KTM. In the second moto Owen again took the win for the overall. Second went to

fellow Suzuki rider Colton Ford, who after 85cc Mod 12-13 winner Colby Morse. a DNF in the first moto left him nineteenth overall. Third for the moto went to Thomas for second overall followed by Karnow for third overall. The true excitement came on Sunday. We all know mud can change the outcome of races as much as any other factor. I’m sure if you asked the winners of the classes they would disagree, and would say it was pure skill. One rider who may be right about that is Mike Wargo who rode in the 450B modified class. Wargo got a bad start while Kawasaki rider Bogen Cochran from Georgia was out front, and looking like he would take the win. Wargo steadily worked, and made his way past Alex Burester and Yamaha rider Cody Carter. Then in the last corner he got to the inside of Cochran and made the pass. With the stupid “Lead” law in effect it was great for me to see one of the biggest classes of the day was 65cc ModRhodes 5.Jaden Farris ified. Brandon Gourley made the trip from 51cc Stk 7-8: 1.Michael Hick 2.Lance Kobusch Indiana worthwhile taking the win over 3.Logan Leitzel 4.Robert Compton 5.Devin KusOhio’s rider Bryce Miller and South Carolina mider KTM rider Cole Mattison.

Horton, Malatia top Megacross opener Mendota, Illinois - April 11

T

he 2009 Megacross season started off with a bang, not to mention 370 plus entries. Any time you get in the first early spring event, it is a good start, much less when the riders come out in big numbers. Even though the temps dropped into the low thirties by the end of the night, the racing was great, and a super sign of what should be another great season in Mendota. The track was left pretty much untouched from last year. All fresh, well groomed and watered, but the more significant changes will be worked in as the season rolls on. This seemed just fine with the riders, many of them fresh out of winter hibernation... hitting the track for the first time in ‘09. After all the heat races were finished, Quad A was first out for the main events. After a re-start, Jason Wehrli squeezed to the inside taking the holeshot with Jeremy Beetz and Justin Medine right on his rear fender through the opening lap. By the second lap they had started to gap the others, and also open a few quad lengths between each other. As they ran through the remaining laps, the closest race developed over forth. Derick Skaggs was under the gun big time from fellow Honda rider Jon VenJohn. The two went side by side several times, each time Skaggs managed to hold off the attempts. At the checkered flag the top five all held their positions, with VenJohn still rubbing fenders with Skaggs, unable to move up. Wehrli was quite happy with his opening event win. “Once I got out there I was good. I got a great holeshot and the quad was running really good. I won the A class championship last year and I’m fully looking to do it again this year, so this is a good start.” Beetz after finishing second, “the goal was to get out front because you know this

will be a tight race. This was my first race of the season, so it is good to run up front and know I’m at speed with everyone. I live right here in Mendota so I will be here at every event if possible.” The 50Sr riders always seem to draw spectators to the edge of the track, and tonight had plenty of action from the little guys. Robert Copenharve took the lead out of the first turn. Tyler Collins and Nolan Dickinson were a close second and third early. Half way through the first lap, Dickinson came to a stop in the track as he threw the chain on his KTM, ending his evening. Working up from fifth to take over third by the second lap, Tyler Evensen was on a mission. At the same time

leader Copenharve was struggling with a bike that was bogging terribly off the bottom. It was impressive that he kept the bike moving at all, not to mention in the lead. Evensen quickly pulled into second and pushed the leader at every opportunity. It finally paid off on the last lap when Copenharve’s bike caused him to lose just enough speed entering the long straight, and Evensen took over and held the lead for the win. Collins finished third as Shane Reilly worked up to forth, having came all the way up from a mid-pack start. The Supermini class was very fast as may be expected, holding many of the sport’s future top riders. Robbie Hyson got a great jump off the gate but went just a little wide in the first turn, and that was all the opening Maxx Malatia needed to take over. From there, as fast as the other riders were, no one could run the same pace as Malatia. He pulled a small lead right away, and then went untouched right to the checkered flag. Hyson rode a great race to finish second, also leaving the action behind him. Jordan Mackiewicz started in third, and was dropped to forth at the end of the opening lap as Logan Skaggs railed The cold evening didn’t the outside of one of slow the 50cc riders one bit. make a long line work. Two laps later, Joey Fortune moved up to forth, setting the final running order for the top five in the sixteen rider class. Talk about fast racing... the 250A class was stacked, as were all the A classes. Sixteen fast guys on a stadium style track, and this on night when there wasn’t any contingency. It just goes to show these riders will follow a successful series with tough competition. In the heat race, Tommy Hofmaster

won leading Johnathan Six, Roy Horton and James Garrett across the line. Daniel Sanders had the hot hand at the start of the main leading for about a half lap before Justin Kelly pushed by, putting his Honda into the lead. Horton was right there in third with a string of fast guys juggling behind him. Kyle White was forth, and by the end of the first lap Hofmaster had worked up to fifth, not getting the start he had hoped for. Sanders slid back to forth as Hofmaster

moved by in the second lap. Horton jumped past Kelly to take the lead at the same time. A lap later, and Hofmaster used the back triple to make yet another spectacular pass, getting to the inside of Kelly for second. From there, he went right after Horton. Hofmaster was clearing a large triple each lap, coming so close to making a pass, but Horton held him off each time. In the last lap they ran side by side, swapping spots in the bowl turns a

couple times before the checkered flag gave Horton the big win. Horton was pumped after getting the win, “Its a little cool out here tonight, but me and Tommy definitely had a good race out there. We both worked up, and we have been racing together for a long time, so it was a lot of fun with him. He got me on the last lap, but I had enough to get him back. I needed that win money for school... being broke may have helped. Nielsen Enterprises and 4PR Racing are really helping me out again this year. I’m going to race a lot of these local events this year and make it a fun summer.” Hofmaster, “I kind of started around midpack and had to get by a few guys early. It was pretty cool, you would pass someone and have them come right back at you. When Roy and I got into the 1-2 spots, it went down to the last lap. I went in on him, then he got me back, but it was a good race. That jump in the back is pretty big, and you need to grab an extra gear. I’m not sure it is faster, and it is a pretty hard landing, but fun to jump. My recently taking the job at EVS Sports will have me around at more of the local events when I can fit it in.” Burton Lavens had DGY backed Jason Kloptowsky keep him honest in the +30A class, but right from the start he was in the lead and he never let it go. In the end he put his Yamaha in the top spot, starting the new season where he left of so often in the vet classes last year. Everett Dahlberg finished third in both the heat and main events.

The +30B class had twenty riders... well actually nineteen motocross guys, and then one rider that is far more recognizable dodging trees at District 17 enduro events. Troy Quest took the main event holeshot and led until the first fast straight when Jason Coleman held it on just a little longer, out breaking him into the corner for the lead. Coleman held the lead to take the win, riding a flawless moto. D17 Enduro Director Ryan Moss was running third, and in the second lap he slid by Quest for second. Soon after, Scott Holmes, also on the move took over third and started trying to get around the woods guy for the runner-up spot. Moss rode smart and finished second while Jason Wehrli won the large Quad A class.

Holmes, Quest, and Brian Goodin rounded out the top five. Coleman hadn’t been around for a while, and even though he was a little out of breath, it was obvious that he was happy with his ride. “It went pretty good tonight, it is my first race back after six years. I’m out of shape, but it was good to get the win and have a lot of fun.” We asked Moss about his jumping over to the motocross side of the sport. “This is just something different to try. My boy likes doing it, so I thought I would come out and have some fun seeing if an enduro guy could hold his own at this. I took the lights off the bike figuring having a few of these guys racing

against, and maybe getting beat by a bike with brush guards and the computer was enough. Gerhard has a safe enough track here that an enduro guy can come and give it a shot and have a blast, even after twenty some years of riding the woods. It is fun doing this, but you aren’t getting me out of the woods, nothing beats that (laughing).” Maxx Malatia ended his evening with a three wins. “Supermini went pretty well for me. 14-24 was tough with Hammond and Reese Miller. In this last race (250B), again Matt Hammond was there giving me some pressure, but it went well for me winning all three. With Suzuki contingency now and the DGY money if I get on the podium, we will be able to hit more races this year. We’ll still do these events, and then more outdoors as well. 4PR Suspension is helping also so it should be a good year.” Nick Wallace was simply flying in the 65Sr class, and then backed it up with a win in 85Jr. “It went really good out there. The track is a lot of fun and you can jump a lot of the jumps on a 60. I raced here a lot last year, and it is always nice. The people are nice, and it is always like that here.”

Tyler Evensen pulled off a last lap pass to win 50Sr.

New Hartford Season Opener New Hartford, Iowa - April 18/19 By Mark Bonnell Photos by Missi Thede

N

ew Hartford Racing’s season opener proved to be another great one with excellent weather and a great rider turnout. Nearly 400 entries came out to see this year’s facility improvements and to share in a great weekend of racing to kick off the 2009 season. A tradition that has gone on longer than most of the racers have been alive once again took place at the longest running Motocross

track in the state of Iowa. That tradition is one that involves families and friends getting together at the Rambling Wheels/ New Hartford Racing club grounds for one of the season’s first races. This year’s opener was no exception with riders from three states doing their best to get back to the racing they have been dreaming about all winter. Their dreams couldn’t have been much better than the way the day turned out on Saturday. While it wasn’t overly warm, it was just right for racing. The track was well prepped and ready for everyone. It did drizzle a little off and on

throughout the day, but it never really rained until just after the final moto, as if it was planned perfectly. The +30A class proved to be one of the most exciting. When the riders made their way around the left hand corner and over the new start area jump, it was Todd Walton, Terry Chumbley and Barry Ream who were out front with Scott Mericle and the Palmer brothers not far behind. As the riders made their way around the track for the first lap, Chad Chyma, Rob Palmer and Kevin Palmer had made their way towards the front of the pack. Walton moved into the lead by the end of the first lap with Mericle close behind. Rob Palmer had managed to work his way into a very solid third place while Chyma and Kevin Palmer rounded out the top five. Ream and Bradly Hepp were on the move on lap two and quickly made it a four man battle for fourth. The four riders were all within five seconds for the next two and a half laps. At the end of the moto, Walton had built up a nice lead and crossed the finish line ten seconds ahead of Mericle. Rob Palmer finished a couple of seconds behind with Chyma and Kevin Palmer rounding out the top five. The start of the second moto looked almost like the first, except this time David Kennon was near the front. By the end of the first lap, Walton and Mericle had worked their way to the front of the group and started to pull away. Rob Palmer once again found himself in third place, looking determined to stay there as he put an end to a second lap charge

Chad Chyma held his second place overall finish in +30A Sunday.

by Ream. Things stayed pretty much the same for the last two laps with the exception of Hepp’s late moto charge into fifth place. Walton took the day’s win with a 1-1 score ahead of Mericle’s 2-2 score. Rob Palmer’s 3-3 earned him a solid third place finish. The weekend saw many other great races and multiple class winners including; Todd Walton, Dave Doster, Bobby Hansen, Gavin Faith, Cody Breeden, Conrad Schipper, Hunter Utsler, Sam Tinkey, Travis Prier, Levi Gansz, and Joshua Staudt. Great Start For Trojan Raceway

Ryan Wildoner and #165 Conner Cowles battle for the holeshot.

North Webster, Indiana - April 18 By Bobby Elkins

T

he soil was first tilled at Trojan Raceway to open another summer of events scheduled for the 2009 Reads Racing Summer Series season. All the track was utilized at this first event. Both uphills, all the middle sections and the horseshoe were all in play for the opener. The Quads hit the track first. The A, B

and Blaster Youth classes were the first to test the soil. A class rider Clayton Terry of Knightstown, IN grabbed the holeshot by the closest of margins with Andy Hedrick Rushville right on his tail. They did a fine job of feeding the wanna-be's a tasty soil dessert. If you know Trojan then you outta know it's got some loamy stuff in strategic areas. That's why be call 'em wanna be's. Everyone wants be out front serving some fresh terra firma to those in tow. At half track it was Terry and Hedrick, followed closely by B riders Andy Balaz riding out of Schererville, IN and George Balaz of Lafayette. As they finished one, Terry had about 80 yards on

Hedrick. Terry pulled an awesome 1-1 to give him Trojan braggin' rights. Hedrick kept a great pace to finish ahead of Eric Lapato in the first moto, but was overcome by Lapato in moto two. Lapato's better start in moto two gave him that rush he needed for second overall. B rider Sonny Nemitz of Warsaw, IN crept slowly up in the field to be the fifth to cross the stripe to earn a second place. Nemitz got the B class holeshot to begin moto two which eventually led to him to go 2-1 for the overall. Great job of warming up the crowd and giving your all to all the riders. It was a great way to begin the Trojan opener. 250B was another great race that kept the action flowing. Nathyn Allen of Gary, IN pulled the holeshot in moto one. Tyler Neal of Huntington came out holding down second

for a whole lap before being overtaken by Conner Cowles in a shifty switchback area that caught Neal by surprise. The pass came early but didn't help Cowles out enough. Allen snagged the win with Cowles second. Matt Godlove had some early troubles kept it alive to finish third. In the second outing, Ryan Wildoner, who never got around the first corner in moto one, came out fast, only behind Cowles. Cowles and Wildoner rode an honest race. Honestly fast! I never saw Ryan pour it on so hard. The best I've seen him ride. It was a bike length between them at throughout the whole race. Cowles, who said “I've got some wicked arm pump” after his first moto had enough left in him for the win, but it was a good race. Brandon Bumpus of Elkhart, IL rode a tough couple of motos also. He was running lap times just a click under the leaders in moto one and faded only a little to pick up a fourth, but would even best Allen at the stripe in moto two to hand Allen a fourth for a 1-4 finish and second overall, while Bumpus finished up 43 for third. The 65cc 7-9, 10-11 and Outlaw were fifth out on the track. Jarred Wright started quickest and made the least amount of mistakes. of Lafayette, IN made just a few to many. Wright had his hands full with pressure from Kraye Loft for a few laps. It was a tight race. Wright and Loft made a gap between the third place ride of Cody Fry of Fort Wayne, IN riding in the Outlaw who had quite a gap on the pack himself. On lap four Loft laid it down handing the race to Wright. Loft was able to restart and get up a full head of steam to finish second in his class, just holding off Fry. Wright repeated in moto two riding to a 1-1 for the 65cc 10-11 overall, as Loft went 2-2 for second. In the 65cc 7-9 class Trenten Hobbs of Warsaw, IN took the win. Justin Stichter did all he could to stay with Hobbs in both motos, but Hobbs seemed to be able to feel the heat every time Stichter got close and that was enough for him to twist it a little more each time. It was obvious he really wanted to win. Brogan Guyer of Peru, IN took the win in the Mini Quads to give him a boost in the Summer Series. Brogan raced to a 3-2 pair of motos for the overall. Blake Sarver looked fast in moto one as he was being chased by Logan Stanfield. Sarver pulled out the win but not without a great fight from Stanfield. Guyer maintained a steady pace throughout and looked to be trying to go faster every lap. It was beginning to show as the moto ended and he had closed on the leaders. Sarver DNF’ed in moto two while Guyer showed Stanfield the fastest way around the track. Grant Johnston, who didn’t have a goo first moto rode away with the win in his second outing. He was churning and burnin. Johnston's better finish and Guyer’s great effort insisting to cross the stripe behind Johnston was all Guyer needed for the overall. William Crossley of Gary, IN turned out

to be the hot young gun in the 85cc Jarred Wright works to fend off 12-15 class Saturday. Crossley #347 Kraye Loft. churned out a couple moto wins for the overall. He came off the line in a fight for the lead with Derrick Bryant of Anderson, IN racing the 9-11 class. Crossley played it smart at the start and kept a cool head. After two corners and the road tabletop section, he was on cruise control. Elijah Labordus finished with a 2-2 and second overall. Jordan Parmley Daleville, IN didn't start well but made up for it by puttin' in some good laps. Parmley rode to a 1-1 in the 9-11 class by holding off the multiple attempts from Bryant. Labordus also ran the Supermini and took a third overall. I think after watching closely that he ran a better race in the class. Pulley Steals one at Tigerton Tigerton, Wisconsin - April 18 By Pete Emme

T

his has to be one of the longest off seasons that I remember. We all received an enormous amount of snow this winter, and we’ve all endured below normal temps for spring. All of this and a long wait till motocross was ready to take place in Tigerton, Wisconsin. Fortunately we were spoiled with one of the finest spring days in 2009, first one over 70 degrees, and pure sun shining down on one of District 16’s finest motocross tracks. Over 220 entries were on hand to battle on the thick, sand-infested course laid out by Scott Biese and his Fantasy Moto crew. The track held up fine all day, as it got good and rough with plenty of deep lines through the corners that made for some great racing. Indiana native, Dustin Pulley, who recently moved to Northeast Wisconsin was hauling the mail on this Saturday in midApril. Pulley was aboard a Yamaha YZ250 two stroke, and had it ringing to a fine tune as he posted a perfect 4 for 4 on the day in 250A and Open A classes. It didn’t come easy for Pulley as he had a eager core of racers breathing down his neck in every moto. He also had

to come from behind in the second moto to garnish the overall in Open A. The first moto had Pulley coming out of the first corner in about the fourth spot as their was plenty of bar banging in the battle for the holeshot. By the time things had sorted out, Pulley found himself in the lead with Matt Maier closing in on his KTM. Maier looked great through the first sand rhythm section as he was tripling in with a vengeance, trying to make up time. Pulley was just a tad stronger through the corners to stay out in front and capture the first moto win. “I didn’t get off to the best start, there was quite a bit of banging going on in the first turn and by the time I got around I might’ve been in fourth or fifth,” said Pulley. “The track still seemed kind of wet from practice as everyone was still trying to gain traction out there. I was able to capitalize from a few of the riders’ mistakes and I found myself in the second spot by the end of the first lap. I knew Matt Maier and Ryan Gilbert were fairly close to me, and I think something had happened to them as they fell back towards the end of the moto,” said Pulley. Sixteen riders were on the gate for the Open A class, formally Motocross A or 250A as it is open for all bikes, 250cc four stroke,

250cc two stroke and 450cc four stroke. Kudos to Pulley beating many of the 450cc machines out there while on his two stroke as well as KTM rider Matt Maier on a 250F, these two riders were really moving out there. “I had a pretty good start out there on my 250F considering most of the field were on 450s. I kind of worked my way up and finally got into second behind Pulley but I pushed too hard and ran off the track and lost a spot to Ryan Gilbert. I got him back by the end of the moto, I just need to stop making mistakes and get into contention for the lead,” Maier said. The second moto had Yamaha rider Matt Menzer getting out early to the lead with Gilbert close behind. Vaughn Mays had fallen in the first corner, remounting in distance back. Gilbert set his sights on Menzer and finally got into the lead before Talladega turn as Pulley pulled into third. Maier suffered a poor start but was clawing through the pack. Menzer and Pulley battled it out for the next lap until Pulley snuck by into the second spot and then took the lead with a pass in the whoops to overtake Gilbert on the final lap. Pulley won back to back motos while Gilbert rode to consistent 3-2 tallies for second. Rounding out the top five were Maier (2-3),

Dustin Pulley (608) getting the nod in the first corner of Open A.

Jacob Luginbuhl and Dillon Kau (#686) battle in the B class.

Eugene Olson (5-5) and Marty “The One Man Party” Leum went 6-6 for fifth. Pulley got out to the lead in the 250A class first moto. Maier was a close second with Mays third. Everyone knew this was going to be a good battle as Maier was closing fast in on the leader. Pulley lost a few bike lengths to Maier before the long double as his feet came off the pegs a few times, allowing Maier to close. Somehow Pulley got away and lengthened his lead to about seven bike lengths and that was enough to get the first moto win. “The start was really, really good for me as I haven’t pulled one yet on my two stroke. I think Maier was right behind me and I did everything I could to keep him there. The track was quite a bit different for me, I’ve never been here and really didn’t know what lines to take throughout the moto, but I guess I got lucky,

whether you win by an inch or a mile, a win is a win,” said Pulley. Pulley nailed the start once again with AMA Supermoto regular Robert Loire in second. Pulley then got chased by Andy Zambon on his KTM. Maier moved through the pack after a bad start, having passed seven riders in six laps and finally getting into the second spot following great battles with Mays and Zambon. Maier’s 2-2 was good enough for second overall while Zambon went 4-3 for third. Pulley got the win again, a perfect 4 for 4 on the day. In Sportsmen B/C action it was Colton Karl on his Honda quickly moving out front and pushing hard with a pack of riders behind him. Karl was on a mission after nailing a nearly perfect start and was gaining valuable ground lap after lap. Moving into the second, Cody Ciszewski was followed by Dillon Kau who was trying eagerly

Philip Warrichaiet in 250B.

to hold off the Yamaha of Jacob Luginbuhl as well as a freight train of riders behind. Karl pushed hard enough to get the first moto win with Ciszewski in second. “It sure helps getting a good start, and it’s nice to break away right off the bat,” said Karl. “I knew #97 was fast and I just wanted to get some space and breakaway to stay out front and win.” The second moto had Ciszewski right on the heels of Karl in the opening laps. A good battled ensued for the next three laps but Karl ran into some problems through the last rhythm section as he catapulted himself into the ground and out of the lead. Ciszewski, much to his delight, took over the lead aboard his new Kawasaki and led the way for another lap to capture the second and decisive moto for the overall win with 2-1 tallies. “The start was okay, I believe I was in second and I started to pressure Colton and then I came around before the last lap and I saw him down and I took over the lead and got the overall,” said Ciszewski. The hotly contested 250B division had twenty-six riders, and it was a epic battle between Jacob Kelsey of Illinois and Kody Kamm. Kelsey enjoyed a healthy lead aboard his Suzuki until a yellow flag came out over the 120 foot DeNoble’s Domain. Kamm neglected to do the double allowing Kelsey to pull away. A lap later Kamm charged through the pack and was right on the heels of Kelsey and ran into some problems with the medic

flag as he was going too fast through the area and was docked a lap, even though he was in the lead at this point. Kamm had taken the checkers but the win was awarded to Kelsey. “I got the holeshot and led for the first yhree laps of the race and then a lapper hit me and I fell off the track and then Kody Kamm was right on me with another lap left. Kamm passed me in the back.” said Kelsey. Kelsey almost nailed the holeshot in the second moto but it was Kamm shaking off his first moto woes as he carved the inside line to lead the pack towards the first plateau. Kamm was silky smooth and proved to be one of the fastest overall riders on the day. Kamm was jumping the finish line and landing into the whoops a whole 85 feet in, it was mind boggling to see and he was the only rider doing it. Kamm easily won the second moto as Kelsey took the overall via 1-2 tallies with Sam Long in the runner up spot with 3-3 scores. Carter Biese had a good battle in the 50Jr class with Dennis Gritzmacher as they traded the lead back and forth but it was track promoter Scott Biese’s kid getting both moto wins on his KTM. Along with Dustin Pulley’s four moto wins, there were a few other riders accomplishing back to back moto wins and on this track as it changes throughout the day, it’s quite an accomplishment. Jacob Kelsey won back to back in Open B. AJ Woller did the same in Open C as did Eddie Norad in 50Sr. Rounding out the list were Mark Markee in +50, Brittany Lemke in Women, Kody Kamm in 125Jr, Matt Maier in Unlimited A, Eric Derlein in +30B, Frank Weiss in +35A, Jordan Schiller in 85Jr, Marty Leum in +25, and Ben Cropsey in Two-Stroke.

Good day at RedBud despite forecast Buchanan, Michigan - April 19 By Bart Newman

T

he weatherman did RedBud MX no favors as a 50% chance of showers sent half the crowd packing Saturday night. Little did they know the weatherman is only right about half the time and missed the mark once again. A sprinkle here and there throughout the morning had the track in great shape. Jace Bergin took advantage of the primo conditions taking the win in the 50Sr. class on the mini track after winning both motos in front of an always fast Daemien Vaughn. In the 250C class it was the #725 Yamaha ridden by Zach Masch that took a pair of wins to top the class, while Rui Azevedo took control of the 250B class. Bergin was smooth, fast and had great lines as the Howell, Michigan Cobra rider put away the 50Sr. field in both motos to take the gold. Vaughn was a front runner all last season in the 50Jr. class and it looks as thought the young gun didn’t lose any speed over the winter and will be a contender in 50Sr after a double moto runner up finish good for second overall. Robert Copenharve (5-3) pushed hard in moto two and took a well deserved third which leap forged him over Robert Lopez (45) and Jakob Hubbard (3-6) once the overalls were totaled up. Masch and his White Yamaha were in sync all day long as the Pewaukee, Wisconsin rider made the trip over from the bagger state

count by taking a couple of solid wins capturing the 250C overall. Second overall went to Luke Winter (4-2) after he put on an inspired ride in moto two, fighting his way into the runner up spot ensuring that the second step of the podium was his in spite of a first moto fourth. A consistent Andrew Socolovitch was third in both motos while Nicholas Faoro (24) and Austin Morris (5-6) rounded out the top five. In Open B action it was RedBud regular Azevedo (3-1) with the biggest dealer check after getting the win in the all important second moto to seal the deal and 250B overall. Steven Ricks was the runner up in both motos giving the Lafayette, Indiana rider second overall for his efforts.
