#68 Josh Koch leads a hungry pack at the start of the Open Pro main.
Koch wins D23 Opener Cedar Lake Arena New Richmond, WI - April 16 By Tim McBride
T
he Shadow Valley Drifters - owners of the Cedar Lake Arena located in New Richmond, Wisconsin played host to the opening round of the Minnesota AMA District 23 flat track season opener. Over 190 race entrants were on hand to make the event a very successful one, and proved to be a good sign of things to come for the upcoming 2016 racing season. Topping a stacked pro motorcycle contingent was the Anderson Plumbing sponsored, defending D-23 Pro class champion, and GNC National #68 Josh Koch. Koch won the 450 Semi Pro and Open Pro classes. Both divisions featured a two-row sixteen rider field. The first of two 450 Semi Pro heats was won by Koch while chased by William Cato and Duke Erickson. The second heat saw National #29 Jake Mataya aboard the GoMoto Honda out front, and seemingly on to victory until he slid out in turn four late in the race, allowing Clint Erickson to pick up the win with brother Nick Mataya in tow. The sixteen rider main event saw Koch grab 4

I didn’t get an update in last month’s issue due to time constraints and the fact that it was a slow month for district business. The season has gotten off to a good start and we have been busy at the board level working a few programs to enhance membership. To that end we now have what we refer to as Supporting Partners. Supporting partners are businesses that offer a minimum discount of 10% on parts and apparel when you present your district card at check out time. Currently it is all motorcycle shops but we are looking to expand this to many other businesses. The list at this point in time includes the following dealers and shops: Larson Cycle in Cambridge, Vaith Sled and Cycle Racine MN, Plainview Powersports in Plainview MN, Cycle City Rochester MN, Hilmerson Cycle in Little Falls MN, Crosstown Cycle -Shakopee MN, Caswell Cycle - Mora MN, and Star Powersports. We plan on getting these onto the website under a Member Benefits tab on the home page. Once up and running we plan to add more businesses outside the motorcycle industry. Any business interested may be added by contacting Leslie Vanderwerf or Mike Quinn, contact info can be found on our website www.armca.org. We did make some editorial changes to our rule book, these changes are strictly wording,

all rules remain unchanged in their intent. We are continuing to look at suppliers for year-end awards, and are open to bids from businesses, or your ideas on the type or a supplier. To date participation in motocross has been good, our other competition events begin in May. We are looking for strong participation in all of them. We are down one Enduro event due to land use issues, we hope to have that solved by the 2017 season. Motocity Raceway has added a quad motocross race to their schedule. That is all I have on district business for this month. Check our webpage and facebook pages frequently to stay up to date on upcoming events or schedule changes. For those of you that follow supercross, Dungey is bringing home another title. The 250 class on both coasts is yet to be decided so the last race will prove to be interesting. The new format for the Las Vegas finally could shake up the standings for both 250 titles. I still haven’t had a chance to get out on my dirt bike so I know the days following that first ride I will be one sore puppy. But like always, the pain is worth it. Once May gets here I plan to get out and do more riding. I hope to see you out there on the tracks, trails, and roads of Minnesota. Mike

D17 Gran Prix Season Opener The course started off on the uphill grass track and led down the hill and into deep sand corners, before merging with the motocross track, and then into the woods where sandy flowing single track shot up and down many steep hills, through creeks and mud holes and then back into deep sand before the finish line. Racing was already well on its way when the 14-29 year old class lined up on the starting line for their first moto. This was a live engine start as Canton M/C president, Dave Edsall pointed down each rider and raised the flag. Twenty-one racers charged toward the first corner with Cody Barnes aboard his Gieson Motorsports YZ250 taking the holeshot. Drake Lineback aboard his Midwest Motorsports YZ250 was #99 Cody Barnes swept the day, close behind in second with going undefeated in two classes. Colt Converse on his Chandlerville, Illinois - April 3 YZ250F in third place. By By BriAnn Stocklen the second corner, Austin Wells on his SRT backed 250XC was in the midst of he District 17 Gran Prix season the action, putting pressure on Converse started off in Chandlerville, IL as he made the pass into third over the hosted by the Canton Motorcycle Club. Gran Prix events are a combination of motocross, woods, trail and field, normally presented in a longer, two moto format. There’s twelve possible classes which makes for larger class sizes and entertaining spectating! The morning started off at a bitter twenty-nine degrees, with people huddled close to any source of heat or inside trailers to stay warm while the strong winds were gusting. 135 entries were calculated for the day with some racers racing in more than one class. The riders meeting took place at 10 AM where inquiry on the amount of time of each moto was debated. After the discussion, the decision was to run twenty minute motos - just perfect. Racers geared up and headed out for their practice lap. The loop was approximately three miles long, and took about seven minutes to get Jarred Hall railing one of the sand berms. through at race pace.

first jump on the motocross track. By the end of the first lap, Barnes had begun to pull away from the rest of the class, as Blake Ryan moved into fifth. The third and final lap was in motion as Converse found a hot line around Wells after a mud hole which put him into third place. The checkered flag came out for the first moto winner of Barnes as later he commented, “I knew if I could get to the motocross track first I would be able to pull away from them a little before we hit the woods. Once I got into the woods I tried to ride smooth and tried my best not to crash. My bike handled great all day even when the track got really rough in the sand sections. My G2 throttle cam helped me a lot with being smooth through tight sections and helped me be more in control in the rough sections while still allowing me to go fast anywhere I needed to.” Not far behind Barnes came second place Lineback, closely followed by Converse, Wells and Ryan. By the start of the second motos, the sun had been out all day and had finally started to warm all the race fans up, as the rays heated the day up into the 70’s. Space heaters began to get put away, coats and hoodies were shed, and sunglasses came out. What a difference from the morning! The racers lined up once

again to start the second moto of the 14-29 class. As they raced to the first corner, Ryan took the holeshot followed by Barnes, Wells and Converse. By the second corner the tables had turned as Ryan went down, which handed the lead over to Barnes. The rest of the second moto stayed consistent as Barnes took the checkered flag once again for the overall followed by Wells in second, Lineback in third and Converse in fourth place. Lineback commented, “As all of us took off, I was squeezed off on the start but stayed pinned on the outside to pass some riders that were slowed by the dust. In the third corner a rider fell and I was able to get by a couple more and could see Austin Wells ahead of me. I gave chase the whole moto, and was able to try a last lap pass in the creek, but it didn’t work out. I finished the day with 2-3 scores and am happy with that
due to the big turnout.” The overall for 14-29 went to Barnes with a 1-1, followed by Lineback 2-3, Wells in third with a 4-2, and Converse with a 3-4. Converse clarified, “Second moto I got a fourth place start and just couldn’t make any moves in the dust and ended up with a flat front tire on the last lap. I do have to say, my favorite part of the track was the last section of woods before the finish. I have to thank MSR, Fun Mart Cycle, 100% goggles, G2, Steel Horse Innovations, Shoei and Layton Erickson Suspension.” Another great, spectatorfriendly race to watch was the 122-Open class! The first moto started as the eight racers charged down the field as Cody Barnes shot out front once again. The racers came around to the scorekeepers pit area at the end of the first lap with Barnes followed by Bren
Raschke aboard his KTM 250XC and Jon Adkisson aboard his YZ250F. As the second lap began, Raschke had a small tip over as he transitioned from the motocross track into the woods, but was able to get up quickly and take off before anyone could catch him. One lap later, the checked flag came out giving the win to Barnes. Raschke said, “I had a mid-pack start but managed to make my way to second place by the end of the first lap, but by that point Barnes had a pretty good lead. I’m happy with my riding though, and have to give a big thanks to SRT Off-road, G2 Ergonomics, Fun Mart Cycle, Fly Racing, 100% goggles and my Dad for helping me out!” Second moto took off with Barnes in
Mateusa Denslaw charging hard in the B class
the lead, followed by Raschke and Jarred Hall aboard his Hall’s Cycle Husqvarna in third place. This was the last race of the day and with the wind gusting all day creating dust, this was a completely different course for these racers than it was the first moto. This makes for great racing if the racers don’t know if a line that was good in the first moto, will be just as good in the second moto, or will it be a deep rut? Such an instance came up on one of the steep uphill sections, where an approximated huge hole was created at the top of the hill from people getting stuck on a tree root and throwing the sand down the hill. The course marshals rerouted racers up a different hill, just before this problematic hill. Raschke commented, “The track got pretty brutal with the wind blowing and drying out the dirt as the day went on, which definitely made it tough.” Three laps in and the checkered flag came out for the last time of the day as Barnes took another win followed by Raschke in second and Hall in
third place. The overall went Barnes 1-1, Raschke 2-2, Hall 4-3 and Adkisson 3-4. Breaking bumps, g-outs in the faces of jumps, multi-lined mud pits and a rerouted hill didn’t stop anyone from having fun though! Barnes commented, “The track was great! Canton Motorcycle Club did an amazing job with the track, making it fun and making sure it had a good flow to it. I liked all of the track but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be a tie between the motocross track and the awesome sand corners after the finish!” Results: 14-19: 1.Cody Barnes 2.Drake Lineback 3.Austin Wells 4.Colt Converse 5.Blake Ryan +30: 1.Jeremy Smith 2.Adam Wright 3.Jeffrey Kaylor 4.Randy Southard 5.Brian Roland +40: 1.Randy Southard 2.Clinton Pherigo 3.Eric Wheelwright 4.Brian Roland 5.Ryan McCoy +50: 1.DJ Ryan 2.Gerhard Ward 3.Thomas Burtle 4.Carl Davidson 5.Donald Chasten 65cc: 1.Chasen Orme 2.Darrin Herman 3.Landon Oatman 85cc: 1.Kamryn Shockey 122-Open: 1.Cody Barnes 2.Bren Raschke 3.Jarred Hall 4.Jon Adkisson 5.Alex Tweeton A Class: 1.Cody Barnes 2.Drake Lineback 3.Blake Ryan 4.Colt Converse 5.Bren Raschke B Class: 1.Kurtis Clark 2.Colton Brough 3.Alex Tweeton 4.Tanner Whipple 5.Braxton Bill C Class: 1.Thor Rick 2.Spencer Neurohr 3.Derek St.Clair 4.Michael Burtle 5.Maxx Stambaugh Vintage: 1.Andrew Ridenour 2.Brian Roland 3.Mark Caballero 4.Lee Orme 5.Craig Hayes Women: 1.Miranda Tweeton 2.Morgan Wheelwright 3.BriAnn Stocklen 4.Kristy Roland 5.Allison Roland

LTM Spring Shootout Pro-Am
ProAm class winner #480 Chase Sexton stuck in the middle of a busy first turn.
Casey Illinois - March 27 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
T
he Spring Shootout Pro-Am was hosted by Lincoln Trail Motosports on their Bomber track. In addition to being a Pro-Am it was also round three of the Fly Series and offered up District 17 Championship Series points. Riders from nine states attacked the well prepped track, with the LTM track crew doing a great job all weekend. In addition to them having the track in great shape the riders were surprised to find a Moto Tech Trailer buried into the large table top! It was cool to see and Moto Tech said they wanted to prove how tough their trailers really were. Being Easter, the track had a candy search for the kids and a nice church service Sunday morning. Pro-Am races are always ones people are excited to be part of and this year it was no different. It’s good to see the upcoming riders chasing the points needed to gain their pro card and race the Nationals. In the Open A class it was Yamaha rider Nathan Hall out front with a busy pack hot on his trail. Big St. Charles KTM rider Mason Eck was second with Geico Honda’s Chase Sexton third and only looking in one direction - to the 12

front. Another rider on the move was Team Green Kawasaki/ Seven rider Jayce Pennington, who on the second lap moved into fourth while Sexton passed both Hall and Eck for the lead. With Sexton out front on lap four Pennington moved into third behind Hall. On lap sixth he got around. Sexton by this time was checked out and took the moto win ahead of Pennington and Hall. In the second moto the start was a mad house. That’s what you get when 41 riders charge into the first turn, all wanting to be in the front. When the dust cleared first moto winner Sexton found himself on the ground and in a place he is not often found, last place. With Sexton down Pennington had his Kawasaki out front and pulling away. Sexton remounted and set off for a ride that could only be called epic! He put his head down and was riding like he was on a different track than the other riders, and in the first lap passed eighteen riders! One rider he did not have to pass was early race leader Pennington, who had trouble, and was pushing his bike back to the pits! By the end of the third lap Sexton was second putting pressure on Hall for the lead. Sexton passed Hall on lap four and never looked back. Hall put on a great charge in second but the battle of the
moto was now for third. Yamaha rider Mark Marincic was third but Drayke Sizemore was on the move coming from eleventh at the end of the first lap. On lap seven Sizemore passed Marincic for third. At the flag Sexton was first for the overall - what a ride! Hall crossed second with Sizemore third for the moto and overall. In the 250A first moto it was all Jayce Pennington who led from the first lap to the end. Geico Honda rider Chase Sexton was second at the end of the first lap so it looked like it would be another charge forward but on the second lap Sexton had issues and found himself in fifth. Charging back towards the front, first getting by Honda rider Brandon Dickson then Trevor Tate and finally Sizemore was back in second. Sexton had some more issues and at the flag Pennington took the win with Sexton second and Sizemore third. In the second moto everyone cleanly got through the first turn and it was the Sexton and Pennington out front setting up “the battle” everyone wanted to see all day. But it wasn’t to be as Sexton laid down perfect laps taking the moto win and the overall. Third for the moto went to Yamaha rider Nathan Hall giving him fourth overall. The last step on the podium went to Drayke Sizemore who finished fourth for the moto, good enough for third overall. With all watching the pro riders there was a current Factory rider racing at the track. RPM KTM rider Rachel Gutish who had finished second in the National Endurocross Championship in 2015. Today, finishing fourth in the 14-24 class, and after riding the 250B class she was on the line for the Women’s class. In the first moto Gutish grabbed the lead and never let go of it for the win. Honda rider Tina Carter-Speece who finished third in +30B was in second and stalking Gutish. Third went to Kawasaki rider Kiley Cento. In the second moto Gutish
showed she liked it out front and took another moto win. CarterSpeece finished second ahead of Cento again. One rider who has been improving and getting faster is Honda rider Bodhi Parsons. He said, “I have only been riding a short time and am trying to do whatever I can to improve and get faster. So how did he stack up? In the 250C class there were thirty-eight riders to test his skill against. In the first moto Parsons fought hard and finished fourth. Yamaha rider Paul Law took the win with Matt Hannah second and Tate Nicholson third. In the second moto Hannah had his yellow Yamaha at the front of the pack and took the win for the moto and overall. Nicholson had his green ride rolling to second. Honda rider Shane Tossava took third for the moto but his ninth in the first moto, leaving him in sixth overall. Parsons stepped up to third overall after another fourth place moto finish. In the Open C class first moto it was again Matt Hannah out front. Kawasaki rider Tate Nicholson took second with KTM mounted Dillon Cantrell third. Parsons had his Honda again in fourth. In the second moto Cantrell jumped to the front and took the win. Second for the moto was Hannah with Parsons third.

Berger went 4-3 to round out the podium just ahead of Gollubske (5-4). Ebben had a tough moto and ended up seventh, earning a fifth overall. Next up was Peewee Jr and being a
s with every season passing, winters in Wisconsin can sometimes linger on and on and on. So when the Rapid Angels host the annual motocross race at the sandy Dyracuse State Park in April, you never know what Mother Nature will bring. This year, things were thawing out nicely, of course until winter storms in March and early April threw us for a loop. Well leading up to the race, the week or so before actually dried out and of course we all know too well what happens in the sand when that happens, Dust! Of course race day weather was calling for 70 and chance of rain. To us in Wisconsin, that either means 32 and snowing or 100 and ultra-hot. Practice started out and the highway smooth course was fast and dry as it usually is in the morning, but we all know how rough the circuit can get very quickly. As first motos got underway, clouds and winds began to form and you know what that means, hang onto your hats or umbrellas. The supercross track which holds the peewee and 65cc classes got a complete makeover last fall by a grant which allowed the facility to make upgrades that were long overdue. All the kids that raced on the track were excited about the opportunity to race on the new track. Mini 65cc class was the first out of the new bungee cord start (possible oxymoron?) and it was Ethan Ebben and Deegan Vanvreede quickly out front followed by Riley Busse. Wyatt Berger and Kyler Gollubske were rounding out top five. Nate Laporte leading Vanvreede figured out the the Open A class.
Yamaha guy, I had my eyes on the only PW50 on the gate up against all those KTM’s. The start is still in the sandy area right off the big track.. The little tires of Brayton Wills had a hard time off the line and a tip over ensued. However, he got back up running and headed off towards the pack. Chance Aisbet was running out front and had a decent lead over the pack. Jaggyr Wolf, Paityn Fritchen and Taylor Ebben were running smooth inside top five. Pretty soon that little PW50 was on

the gas and catching the pack. At moto end, it was Aisbet out front, Wolf second and Wills took third ahead of Ebben and Fritchen. In moto two, Aisbet again got out front
and started to cruise. However, with the rains that came down, it made the clay track pretty slippery and the name of the game became staying on the bike. Well, that little PW50 with Wills at the controls
did a great job keeping upright, good enough to finish behind Aisbet who went 1-1 for the overall. Wills 3-2 gave the rookie a second in his first race ever. Wolf had a 2-5, good enough to hold onto third place just ahead of Fritchen and Ebben. Speaking of Yamaha, 250B was almost a Yamaha top five overall with Brandon Hoffman leading the way. Nick Dziekan was second, Tristin Fuerst was third and Andy Draeger fourth all on Yamahas. Cody Steuck also on a YZ, was second in moto one but dnf’ed in moto two, making way for Kawasaki mounted Kory Sorge who ruined the Yamaha brigade. Hoffman was also a double class winner taking home honors in the new Two Stroke B/C class. I have a feeling that this class is going to take off and could see huge numbers this summer as young and old can race this class as long as they are on two stroke and are a B or C rider.

250C class was the biggest class of the day as twenty-three riders took to the track. It was local rider Trytan Stewart who was on the gas, taking the both moto wins ahead of Zach Scheiber who ran two consistent motos behind Stewart. Rounding out the podium was Travis Miller who took second in moto one and held on to a forth in moto two. Locals Falen Narel and Kyle Kohls rounded out the top five. It was good to see Narel back out on the track after a long time off the bike with her injuries, and she put in two solid motos against the boys. Open A had the heavy hitters and my thought was anyone who lines up in Open A should feel like they can win. In moto one, it was Nate Laporte on his new Sportland 2 Suzuki coming out in front, holding a slight edge over Nick Jackson and Kyle Hameister. David Watzka and Dylan Narel rounded out top five. In moto two, Laporte lined up next to gate house and again came out clean with the holeshot ahead of Hameister. Kyle hung in there but Laporte was able to get just enough gap to run a solid race and go 11. Narel ran well, moving up a couple positions to third, going 5-3 and third overall ahead of Watzka (4-4) and Jackson who rounded out the top five. Min-

nesota’s Nick Jackson was able to make the trip worthwhile though and came back to win the 250A class. Laporte told me he was excited to be back racing after have a rough 2015 with his knee injury, and is going to continue to build his program one race at a time. He wanted to thank Sportland 2, United Rentals, VMI LLC, Laporte Flooring, EVS Sports, Mika Metals, Motorex, Risk Racing, DT1 Filters and GForce Suspension. So here is the beauty of Dyracuse, dry and dusty in the morning, rain shows up midway through first set of motos and most people on normal clay tracks would start grumbling and talk about protesting the second set of motos. But when rain hits this track, things actually improve and the track gets a nice tackiness to it. My son came in from his 125JR moto and mid moto took his goggles off and had about ten pounds of the finest fracking sand in his eyelids. He said he couldn’t see and it hurt, but he just had to finish the moto. I told him to wash them out and if it didn’t get better to take it easy and skip his next moto. Two minutes later, he is gearing up for his Two Stroke B/C moto and I asked him what he was doing, and he said, “are you crazy, the
track is mint, I’m heading back out.” Of course, with all the riders, the track also gets super rough as the day progresses, so it shows who had been training and who hasn’t. In case you were wondering, I’m out of shape. New to the +40 class was a guy who has some old CR500 two stroke, which I don’t even think Honda makes anymore, but being the young gun in the class he put that old trusty steed out front both motos. Oh, you might know him as your District 16 president, Mr. Todd Ellingson. Speaking of young guns, I need to give a shout out to my buddy Jeff Mclain who has been racing Dyracuse forever, and he never won an overall here. Last year he won moto one, but fell in moto two with a couple corners to go and away went that overall. Well, he finally put on a show today in +50, beating another old fast rider named Steve Sorge for his first overall at the famed sandy park. I heard talks of retirement now that he has the win, but I’m sure we will see him the rest of the summer running up front in +50. Big thanks to all the Rapid Angels club members and volunteers who make this a great race, and we hope to see Mclain winning the +70 class some day!

Midway MX Park Reboots
James Maalis (60) gets the jump off the line in 85cc 12-15.
Kellogg, Minnesota - April 17 By Rolfe Otterness
F
orty years ago LuVerne Klassen established a new motocross track in southern Minnesota, midway between Plainview and Kellogg‌ thus the name, Midway MX. Over the years the track has been operated by a number of entities and now it is getting a new phasea reboot, as a new group of moto enthusiasts step forward to carry on the racing tradition. Jessica Noaeill, Jordan Schlosser, Rick Ziebell and Tim Kight have elected to reprogram the track, build up some infrastructure and launch the track into its fifth decade of competition. Early this spring the dozers came out and carved out some new features and over
the season the track will be optimized for maximum enjoyment by racers and spectators alike. The first day of competition at the new track took place on an uncommonly warm April day, with temperatures in the 70’s and over 300 entries on hand to check out the spring dirt. Outstanding efforts of the day honors went to Christian Berg (mini classes) and Nick Fox (C classes) who both captured three overalls for a good start to the year. Fox surged from the gate to lead the 250C class into turn one on his KX250. He definitely had the pace for the race and began to gap the field. Kole Lemcke and Kado Vandeberg slotted into the 2-3 spots for the early portion of the race, but Vandeberg found things heating up at the

end of the moto with Marcus Koester and Alex Comstock slipping by shortly before the checkered. Austin Kristiansen was a bit behind Vandeberg for sixth. Fox jumped out to lead early in moto two and set a fast pace. Lemcke and Koester quickly dove into second and third and though they maintained a good pursuit, neither catch Fox to challenge for the lead. Kristiansen improved his finish to fourth and Aaron Boatman grabbed fifth while Comstock snared a seventh to give him a top five overall. Josh Boaz has had strong results in the
Walker Kruse nabbed a holeshot to lead in moto two but Johnson took over the lead, then late in the moto dropped out with troubles. Steiger inherited the lead and went in for the win, giving him the overall. Kruse then took second over Anderson and Gomez with Brad Hoppe nabbing fifth. Max Earley looked strong in the 85cc 12-15 class as he swept both motos on his KTM. Tyler Otterdahl and Gavin Tilford swapped finishes of 2-3, with Tilford snaring second overall with the better second moto score. Jame Maalis
Mateo Johnson grabs the early lead in the 250B class.
Mini classes for a number of years and came out flying in the Supermini class. He was unchallenged as he rampaged around the track for solid wins in both motos. Nolan Rommel had strong rides for a 2-2 score and second overall with Ronnie Heppner and Jonah Jevning grabbing third and fourth for the day. Mateo Johnson jumped out in front of the first 250B moto and looked strong as he ran off for the win. There was a good scrap over second place with Colton Steiger, Joseph Gomez and Evan Hills all in contention for the second half of the race, but Steiger hung in for second with Conner Anderson trailing Hills at the flag for fifth.
wrapped up fourth with his 5-4 tally over Ron Heppner who went 4-5. Today was a cool way to get the new season off and running, and as the new group has already shown, we can expect more of it all summer. It sure is nice to see the long time track continue on, offering all of us such quality events in this part of the state. Fantastic “Smagical Rock” Opens D16 Trials Season Mauston, Wisconsin - April 17 By Kevin Huber
O
n April 17th the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association had their first event of the season on Noel Smage’s land near Mauston, Wisconsin. This early in the season weather can be a challenge, with rain, cold, or even snow. To everyone’s delight, this year the sun was shining and the course was dry. Temperatures in the 70’s made it comfortable for riders and spectators. A large turnout of riders included those from a Minnesota Trials club. The Advanced class was exceptionally large with twenty riders. The large numbers combined with the long, challenging sections limited all groups to just two loops. Since this was the first event of the season, many riders had new motorcycles that they were riding for the first time. Since the National events now require a tethered kill switch many of our local riders have installed them. These switches take some getting used to since they will kill the bike when you move your left hand away from the handlebars. One
champ rider found out the hard way that his was installed too far away from his hand when the bike killed while attempting to climb a large cliff. Both he and his bike came tumbling back down. He adjusted the location and didn’t have any further trouble with it. Another rider was riding his new 4stroke bike that arrived a couple days earlier. The 4-stroke has more compression braking than his old 2-stroke, which required a change to his riding style. The more he rode the more comfortable it was, and he felt the bike climbed the sandy hills better than his 2-stroke. Another ritual that occurs on the first event of the year is that several riders moved up to a higher class. This changes the dynamics of the classes and ads to the excitement for what the Champ class rider Will Check. year will bring. ound two of the WFO Promotions Hare Scramble Series (round 3 of AMA District 17) was a little on the chilly side with a high of 47 degrees for the day, but that didn’t intimidate all 197 entries who showed up, ready to race! The afternoon races started around noon with the AA class in the first row followed by five other rows consisting of the A, B, Open and the plus classes inter-
mixed. As the shotgun fired, the AA class quickly started their bikes from the dead engine and headed south down the field making their way around two corners, then into the woods, with the #93 of Austin Wells aboard his Team SRT KTM 250 out front and the Variom Racingbacked #136 of Andrue Remley aboard his new KTM 250SX close behind. Remley later stating, “I struggled with the new bike and the suspension wasn’t set up for me.” He dropped to fifth place half way through the first lap, getting passed in the long sand whoop section.

After a fifth place start, Colt Converse aboard his Fun Mart Yamaha YZ250F found his way into second place by the second lap. With Wells in the lead, Converse was charging, putting him only seconds behind Wells as they began to pull away from the rest of the other AA racers. The second lap of the one hour and forty-five minute race was in full swing with the top two racers running eleven minute lap times. Toward the end of the second lap, Wells tangled with a lapped rider resulting in a tip over, and handing the lead to Converse. Converse put in a solid third lap out front as Wells had a rough lap crashing another three times, allowing Converse to extend his lead to almost two minutes. By the fourth lap, Jon Adkisson on a Yamaha was into third place. The top three racers were spaced out enough to not be a threat to each other, allowing each of them to run a comfortable pace. After 9 laps, the checkered flag came out for Converse followed by Wells and Adkisson. In the +50B class, # 3027 of Doug Propper was first into the woods, followed by Dale Smith and the rest of the class. Smith checked in on lap one in first place about one minute ahead of Propper, now in second. Smith consistently pulled away from the field, eventually finishing with seven laps. Propper finished second with six laps as Mark Caballero rounded out the top three.

Perfect Nuke Season Opener
50cc riders are welcomed to the big bike track for 2016.
Byron, Illinois - April 17 Motosports Park
E
ighty degrees and sunshine on a mid-April Sunday. Now time this for the opening event at Byron, Illinois’ Motosports Park for Nuke Series round one and you know this is going to be good. This early in the season a race promoter is usually expecting a ton of work... scraping mud off the track, fighting frozen pipes, and all those nasty little things that make putting on an early season race even harder. Not this year - not this weekend. It was a day for shorts, and getting that first good sunburn of 2016 out of the way. What a way to start the racing here in Byron. Everyone was excited to get the racing started. Kicking off the day was the Open C class, with 24 riders coming off the gate for the first moto. Chase Boyken had the best reactions as he dove into the first turn with a bike length’s lead. From there, Brock Shelton paced him lap after lap, but Boykin put in a perfect moto for the eventual win. These two gapped the others, but Andrew Gerdau and Steven Minkus were fender to fender all moto, with Gerdau holding on for third, as
Tanyon Palka on his Suzuki finished fifth ahead of Wisconsin’s Jake Luchini. The second moto looked to be a complete repeat, that is until the last lap as Boyken led, with Shelton right on his rear fender. Factory Connection/ FMF/ World of Powersports rider Shelton after the moto, “I kept taking the outside line in a couple spots and I was getting closer each lap. I switched it up in the last lap going up into the rollers and caught him at the sand. It’s a longer line going outside there, but it can be faster if you push it. I made it work, and got the pass for the win. The track has gotten really rough, but really good. It is a great opening day out here for sure.” Shelton’s second moto win was good for the overall as well. Gerdau once again rode a really clean race for third. Hunter Grampp had a tough first moto as he finished tenth, but he pulled off a fourth this time for a little redemption. Palka finished fifth ahead of Minkus this time, for fourth overall. Jarred Berggren set a blistering pace in the Open B class first moto. Once out front in the first lap, he led all the way to the finish. Stuart Schwagerman, also on
a Yamaha settled into second and opened a small gap over a very close battle between Apollo Mbuki and Rj Mckenzie. Mckenzie tried to fight his way past Mbuki all moto, to no avail. Late in the moto he made a small mistake and dropped to sixth, as Jacob Wilke and Jake Garwood slipped by. Berggren dialed it in again in the second moto for another win. Again, by moto end, Schwagerman and Mbuki were 2-3, this time ahead of Mckenzie in fourth. They finished in that order for the overall as well. In 250B, Berggren had a good start as they went into turn three, but he pushed his front wheel through a berm, planting himself and dropping to the back of the class. Out front, Apollo Mbuki led each lap to take the win. Dylan Boyd rode a clean moto for second as there was some juggling behind him. Jacob Wilke and Stuart Schwagerman were going at it hard. Late in the moto, a wide open Berggren moved into fourth after making up a ton of lost time, but then went down once again. At the end, it was Wilke finishing third ahead of Schwagerman and Rj Mckenzie. CYCLE USA, May 2016

was Illinois’ own Chase Sexton on his Geico Honda, and the expectations were even higher. Without a lot of surprise, right off the line Sexton established himself out front. This was a fast group of riders for sure, and yet Sexton was in a class of his own out front. The real race turned into one over second place, and it was a good one. Eric Feuillerat led Ty Tyrrell and Zach Coons for two laps as the three were dragging bars and swapping lines constantly. As they went into the third lap, Coons jumped all the way up to second and started to pull away a little as Tyrrell was still dogging Feuillerat.
Sportland 2/ Club 57/ parents backed Coons after the moto, “I got pinched on the start and kept the pressure on right away. I made a few moves and got into fourth behind Tyrrell, then I found a spot around them on the outside. Once I got into second, I tried to ride smooth and run my own race.” A lap after Coons took over second, Tyrrell pulled a bad line and went down after connecting with Feuillerat, dropping way back in the pack. On the move late in the moto, Lukas Cobian put his Suzuki into third ahead of Feuillerat and fifth place finisher Ryan Rowntree. Sexton took the win, well ahead of the pack. Sexton made it look easy again in moto two, putting in nothing except impressive lap times. Coons quickly pushed into second, but then at the half way point, dropped out of the moto after loosing his chain. Tyrrell was on a roll, and slid by Rowntree and then Billy Holzapfel for second, after that troubling first moto. Rowntree worked past Holzapfel on the last lap for third, and as it turned out, that was good for second overall (5-3). Cobian’s 3-6 held up for third overall ahead of Alec Perry’s 6-5 motos. A very relaxed Sexton after the win, “I got the holeshot, pulled away and took the win. I felt like I was riding pretty well. The track has some really nice ruts, and is getting rough so racing is really good. My bike is working really well and the support I’m getting from the Geico Honda team is really great, and keeping me pumped out there.” Sexton having grown up racing here, and now topping the A classes as he is, we asked what that felt like? “It is really cool. I spent my whole life to this time looking up to the A riders, and now to go out there and race with them is really awesome. It is pretty cool, and an honor to be doing so well.” In the 250A class, out front once again it was all Sexton, putting in perfectly clean laps to run away for the win both motos. In moto one, Zach Coons worked his way from fifth off the line to second by the third lap, making a final pass on David Wilson. Alec Perry also was on the move, climbing up to fourth by moto’s end, just ahead of Byron Downen. In moto two Coons was into second quickly. This time it was Dale Kathan running third. Kathan held on to third despite pressure from Alec Perry, then David Wilson. Wilson finished fourth for third overall behind Coons. CYCLE USA, May 2016

In the 65cc divisions, Jr class rider Hunter Savage stood above them all. Even off a stagered gate drop, he managed to lead his class, and work through the Sr class riders to cross the checkered flag first in each of the combined motos. Behind him in the Jr class, Ayden Price was fast on his KTM to finish second each time out. Ethan Ebben finished third in the first moto, but dropped back to sixth in moto two, for fifth overall. Ayden Oppenlander went 5-3 for third overall ahead of Aiden Weyenberg (4-4). In the 65Sr class, Kaukauna, WI’s Isaac Therrien won both motos. Gavin Templen went 3-2 for second as Max Williams (2-4), Colin Nash (4-3) and Nathan Bills (5-5) filled out the top five. Yamaha mounted Justin Fluger had his way in the +30B/C class. Driving into the lead off the start, he never looked back in moto one. Roland Gomez and Elijah Gorecki ran 2-3 into the third lap before their battle got a little too close, and both riders went down. Eran Salzmann saw this as an easy way to sneak into second. He held it until Troy Blakey dropped him to third in the last lap. Cory Lingle finished fourth ahead of Gomez. Fluger got the drop on everyone in moto two as well. Salzmann was running second with Brandon Hastings in third. As they went into the second lap, Elijah Gorecki was on the move, passing Hastings. A lap later he found a line around Salzmann to finish second. Salzmann’s 3-3 was plenty good for second overall. Blakey went 2-5 for third ahead of Lingle’s 4-4 motos. Elkhorn, WI’s Gorecki had a rough first moto that saw him limp across the finish line in eleventh, so his second moto run was all about bragging rights in the overall standings. Fluger after his two moto sweep, “It was pretty good out there today. I got holeshots, and that helps. The track is really good. I spent three months in Florida this winter riding, and that is definitely helping boost my confidence.” David Hayes had the right idea in +50A, getting out front early. Only problem, in both motos the pesky veteran Tim Filippi just kept coming, and eventually worked into the lead for the win. Hayes put in two good motos for second each time, ahead of Tim Boblin on his KTM, and the seven others. Illinois Powersports/ Sunset Ridge/ Gieson Motorsports backed Filippi after his second win, “I made a mistake off the

start in the first moto and had to work back up to get around David. This moto I had a good jump but blew it in the third corner and had to keep pushing him yet again. The track was tough today, it just kept you on your toes. This is sure different with the nice weather. I raced last weekend as the snow was coming down. This is pretty nice for sure.” With this new season came a change at Motosports Park, the closing of the Hilltop track. While this unfortunately meant the ATV classes will only be included in a few holiday weekends, good news is we’ll see them on the big track, where the experience is bound to be better than ever. The change also brought the youngest riders down to the main track, a change very well received by all the parents and riders we spoke to. Robert Gibson, father of 50Jr rider Nicholas, “I like the change. We like it down here. We have easier camping and it will be easier seeing all the other racing.” Fellow 50Jr rider Nolan Simonton’s father Shane added, “I love being down here. It will give the kids more chance to
learn and compete on a better track. Nolan loves the idea of racing on the big track, so yes, we are all for it.” As a spectator, the change is great... you can now see all the classes, without having to run from one track to the other. When the quads return, hopefully they come in good numbers, as seeing them on the big track will be fantastic. Only downside is we’ll have a little longer day to run through all the motos... but is that really a bad thing? Who comes to the races just to want it to be a short day. We come for a full day of racing, so it is a win-win. Speaking of the 50cc classes, in 50Jr, Freeport, IL’s Mikah Carpenter swept both motos for the overall. Jayden Adams went 3-2 for second overall, swapping spots with Jaxson Schiller. In 50Sr, it was Owen Blakey topping the class, but only after turning the tables on Deegan Vanvreede. Blakey had to settle for second in the first moto behind Vanvreede, but came back to win moto two for that overall. Gavin Roth finished third in both motos. CYCLE USA, May 2016

Conner Burger won the 85Sr class, leading every lap. Burger, “I got a good start and just tried to ride consistent laps. The track is good. Getting rough, but good. I just rode hard and got the win.” The next three spots were filled by John Perovic, Tyler Kalies and Zach Brunner. That order was the same in the second moto, as the four quickly locked in their positions out front of the nine rider class. Seventeen 85Jr riders left the line in moto one as Elijah Tetzlaff fought his way into the lead. As Tetzlaff worked on locking in his position, Eugene Wolff spent two laps battling with Luke Jackson to take over second. Jackson was close, as was Cole Godfrey, Easton Block and Isaac Therrien. A last lap mistake by Jackson opened the way for Godfrey to wrap up third as Therrien also used the last lap to take fifth ahead of Block. Moto two saw Jackson grab the holeshot with Tetzlaff running second. Half a lap in, and Tetzlaff made his pass stick, and then never looked back as he went for another win. Wolff quickly moved up to second, then later in the moto Godfrey passed Jackson for third. 250C saw Chase Boykin lead every lap of the first moto. He wasn’t alone, as Brock Shelton held his pace, back just a couple bike lengths through each lap. Nathan Wilson held third all the way, as Nick Wuertzer eventually made his way back into fourth after a brief tip over midmoto. Zach Jurgensen finished fifth after a hard moto with Tanyon Palka, making his return to racing after a significant injury last season. Even with thirty-four riders in the class, the top six managed to pull a perfect repeat of their first moto scores in moto two. Once again, Boykin took the win, this time with a little more advantage over Shelton. It was a great opening day out at Motosports 40

osh Boaz had a stellar day as the Spring Creek Motocross Park had the 2016 season debut, taking three overall wins and a second. Boaz cleaned up in the 85cc 12-15, Supermini and Two Stroke (125cc) classes, but had to accept a defeat in Schoolboy 1 as Mateo Johnson showed him the fast way around the track. Still it was the best performance of the day out of the 560 or so entries that were on hand to tackle the always challenging track. After the long winter slumber for the track, riders found a couple new tabletops on the far side of the track, replacing a couple of double jumps that had made their home there for the last few years. The track was slick in the morning after a series of showers the previous night. With cool temperatures the morning practice was a matter of survival for many riders, but about noon the sun finally broke out and the day turned out to be surprisingly nice. The track shaped up well, as is usual with sunshine and some attention from the track crew. The 250B class had a decent turnout with twenty entries, and Luke Hempen stormed into the lead as they rounded turn one. Hempen was on the gas and began to edge away almost immediately with Ben Adamson and Mateo Johnson slotting into the second and third positions. Adamson held strong under increasing pressure by Johnson for a number of laps, but finally got a bit of a gap on the last circuit. Hempen took the checkered with a decent lead followed by Adamson, Johnson, Austin Aspros and Keegan Kleinwotterink - the top five all running a bit apart from each other. Hempen rocketed out for another great start in moto two with Adamson and 42

Johnson right on his rear fender. Adamson fended off Johnson for about the first half of the moto, but then Johnson took over second for the rest of the moto. The moto wrapped up with Hempen out front with a pretty solid lead. Johnson had a decent gap over Adamson while Aspros was again fourth, but a good number of seconds back from the top three. Travis Muller snared fifth which together with his first moto seventh place finish wrapped up fifth overall. Jada Murphy surged to the lead in moto one of the Women’s class on her 85 with Krista Knupp and Lizzibeth Turney dueling over second in the early going. Turney got the better of Knupp about half way into the moto and then pulled away a bit, but there was no catching the leader as Murphy ran in for a nice win. Knupp pulled the holeshot in moto two but Turney was quickly by followed by Murphy. Turney held on to the lead for over a lap, but Murphy had her 85 singing and took over somewhere on lap two, then went on the build a ten second gap by the flag. Turney had a similar size edge over Knupp by the end and Falen Narel held on for fourth over Katherine Vanderwerf.
Jada Murphy won the Women’s class.

Ronnie Orres from Fort Dodge, Iowa grabbed the lead in the first moto of the 65cc 10-11 class. Domenic Hegman and James Orres followed in his wake at the end of lap one but James Orres then took over second. Ronnie Orres was running well and took the win with about six seconds to spare as the checkered flag fell. Brodie Boumeester and Luke Geis pulled across the line in fourth and fifth. Hegman grabbed a mighty holey in the next moto but James Orres jumped to the lead followed by Ronnie Orres. Ronnie was on James’ tail until lap two when he encountered a stalled rider in his line on the pro hill. He stalled himself then and on the steep hill fell over and dropped way back in the pack by the time he restarted. James Orres went on for the win with Hegman and Boumeester trailing him in. Ronnie recovered for fourth, snaring a third overall. Jacob Oehrlein’s 6-5 score wrapped up fifth overall for the day. Nick Schnagl ran strong in the B class in 2015, then moved up to A only at the

very end of the season. He came charging out this day and grabbed the 100% Goggles sponsored holeshot to lead the Open A pack into moto one. Gavin Wilkins, another graduate from the B class of 2015, dropped into second in pursuit with Joe Perron and Zach Williams in supporting roles. Schnagl was smooth and fast out front while Wilkins was a bit more animated in pursuit, but Wilkins did close in to pressure Schnagl on lap four. Schnagl negotiated the whoops a bit better and managed to pull out another couple of seconds to give him the edge to win. Perron maintained third for the duration with Williams unable to successfully challenge him and Brad Deprenger rounded out the top five. Schnagl assumed
leadership around turn one in the second moto with Williams in tow. Williams, a former Loretta Lynn’s champion, gave chase and the top two were in a major battle for the lead for most of the moto. A short distance behind raged a battle over third with Perron and Wilkins involved. This scenario played out to the checkered with Schnagl finally pulling away a bit from Williams on the last lap and Perron holding off a determined Wilkins for third. Philip Maus was all alone in fifth in this moto but Nick Jackson’s consistent 6-7 finishes wrapped up fifth overall for him. Awesome Sunset Ridge Season Opening Weekend Walnut Illinois - April 24 Sunset Ridge MX
T
he very experienced crew at Sunset Ridge MX never seems to run from a challenge. This year, to kick off their 2016 racing schedule, the opening event was destined to be a big one. No warm up needed, get on with doing it big right away. April 23/24 delivered a two day ProAm event with Loretta Lynn Qualifying and District 17 Championship points all on the line.
After some rain on Thursday, Bob Pistole and his team got the track ready for the Friday practice, then continued to keep it just right all weekend for two fantastic days of racing. Perfect race weather helped, and after it was all done and said, good luck finding anyone in the pits that wasn’t impressed with how it all came together. Classes were big, fast, and mixed with riders from all across the country... pretty common for an Area Qualifier. The ProAm classes were stacked, and it all made for an awesome day at Sunset Ridge, when we caught day two of the racing on a beautiful Sunday. In 450B, twentyeight riders got the racing started as the first class of the day. Michigan’s Matthew Carpenter led Florida’s Christopher Fortier through the first four laps. Illinois rider Chad Saultz
Open C on the line
was in fourth, and pushing hard to advance with Iowa’s Tanner Hatch and Indiana’s Jett Janowski on his rear fender. Late in the race, Fortier took over the lead and Janowski moved into fifth. Saultz finally moved up a spot as well, finishing third. Fortier continued his winning ways as he led the field through moto two. Saultz was proving his consistency, as he again ran in the lead group, finishing second for second overall. Palatine, IL’s Eric Horcher led MC Motopark’s Reid Law, Tim Filippi, and Hanna City, IL’s Joe Buskirk early in the very competitive +40 class. As the fifteen riders came to complete the first lap, Buskirk put his Suzuki past Filippi for third. Buskirk wasn’t done there though, as he passed a rider each lap until he took over the lead before the last lap. Also on the move was the very fast Jay Wagner out of Michigan. Coming from way back, and having a rear wheel full of track banners, Wagner took over fourth place before the moto ended. Horcher was second with Law in third. Wagner showed his speed in the second moto, taking the win after a long and close battle with Buskirk. The overall

still went to Buskirk, while Horcher finished third. This time out, Filippi got the best of the Kawasaki mounted Law, but again, Law’s better first moto helped him wrap up fourth overall. The 125cc class, in this case for 12-16 year old B/C riders delivered one of the best and most entertaining set of motos of the day. These kids are on rails... getting everything they can out of the small bore 2 strokes, and nothing sounds better rippin around the track than twenty-six of these high revving machines. Riders from nine states left the gate, and it was cool seeing our local guys mix it up so well out front. Michigan’s Jacob Elko led the way with MI’s Stephen Hooker and New Lenox, IL’s - Sunset Ridge regular Zach Tatar literally on his rear fender. Tatar hit the big “Leap” and took over second half way into lap one. By the end of the second lap he was in the lead. Riders were all shuffling behind him, and as they began the last lap Wisconsin’s Eddie Norred was up to third, but then dropped it, slipping to seventh
after such a great ride. Jonah Geistler put his KTM across for second, locking up another top spot for an Illinois rider. Caine Dodson(MI) finished third as Hooker and Elko rounded out the top five. Tatar after the win, “I was like fifth on the start and just went to make my passes as quick as possible. Once I got out front I made sure to ride my own race and get the win. The track is pretty deep but I like that about it, and you just have to stay on it. I’d like to thank my parents for all the help in doing this, as well as JT Racing, Shoei, Gen MX, Roost MX and my other sponsors.” The second moto saw even more action. Out front off the start was Dodson, this time with Geistler glued to his back wheel. Tatar was into third, and then passed Geistler. Geistler fought his way back into second, then Tatar went down, slipping back to sixth as Norred moved up to fourth. All this in the opening two laps. Geistler went after Dodson hard, and it paid off as they began the last lap,
with Geistler moving to the front. Norred took over third to set the final order out front. Geistler earned the overall (2-1) for another D17 rider victory. Dodson second, and Tatar’s 1-6 was good for third overall ahead of Hooker and Norred. 450C had thirty-six riders dive into the first turn, with Yamaha mounted Tyler Evensen out front by the time they exited turn two. The Waterman, IL rider immediately set a fast pace. Brock Shelton (IL) hung with him early in the moto as the two eventually gapped the other riders. There was plenty of position swapping going on behind these guys, including the sight of #93 on a Yamaha coming on quick. With two laps to go this Indiana rider, Zach Rossi had moved past the others, and was now at Shelton’s back fender. Rossi, after the moto, “I got a good start but got pinched off and it took a little bit to get up to fifth. I caught up and got around second with a lap to go in the back, and then rode to make sure I stayed

there. The track is good and I expect it will get rough later in the day.” Rossi finished second ahead of Shelton, while Evensen cruised in for the win. It took Evensen a couple laps of smart riding to work into the lead of the second moto, but once there it was all his. He walked off with a few bikes lengths each lap ahead of Shelton who led the first two laps. They finished there with Indiana’s Andrew Ramsey fourth, good for third overall. Christopher Cannell (MI) went 6-3 for fourth overall. The Mini Sr 12-14 class was a cool show of the upcoming speed we will see on the big bikes in a few years. Out front from the start was Kansas rider Kaeden Amerine. He was pretty much gone from the start. Wyatt Liebeck (WI) ran really well in second through the first two laps with Clay Quick (TX) and local rider Patrick Murphy on his tail. Liebeck pulled a little gap, and it turned out that was a good thing as there were a couple young speedsters coming through the pack. As Murphy and Quick were swapping spots in one heck of a battle, first came Texas rider Tj Uselman, to quickly cut his way past them both for third. Then out of what seemed like nowhere, the very fast Nathanael Thrasher (TN) not only caught up, but passed three riders in the last four corners to finish fourth ahead of Murphy. In the second moto, Trasher simply took off out front. “I had a good moto to get the win. I was just trying to come back after the wreck in the first moto. I was in last place and got back to fourth, so I needed this win to get back on the right path.” Liebeck and Amerine went at it for three laps, fighting for second before Liebeck tipped over and dropped back to sixth (4th overall). Murphy ran in fifth most of the moto, never able to turn it up another notch, finishing sixth overall. 250C had forty-seven entries, so it was broken into two divisions where the top sixteen in each advanced without the trouble of a last chance moto. Cool thing is even with these fast riders from all over the midwest, two local riders stood out in the end. In Division one, Tyler Evensen was back and leading the charge. He went on to take the win with Christopher Cannell (MI) second and Brock Shelton (IL) fighting his way up to third in the final laps. Division two was all Chase Boykin (IL) out front through each lap,
Wyatt Liebeck swept both motos in the thirty-eight rider 85cc 9-12 class. CYCLE USA, May 2016

and pulling away. In the final, it wasn’t surprising to see Evensen and Boykin clear the field in the first couple corners to lead the rest of the laps. Once out front, they ran there to the finish. Maron Racing’s Boykin, after finishing second. “I grabbed the holeshot this time then Tyler got by me right away. I tried to stay with him and we just rode it out that way. The track is getting really rough later in the day now. Ruts are deep, but it is great. The track is always nice here and everyone running the track is always super nice, so this is the place to be.” Tim Filippi (IL) played a cat and mouse game in both +50 motos with Michigan’s well known Bart Newman. Filippi took the first moto win, and looked like he had the second moto won a couple times, but then Newman would charge back and re-take the lead. In the end, Newman held the lead, and his second moto win secured the overall. Howard Jabaay finished third (4-3) on his Suzuki. A thirty-eight rider gate was up next for the 85cc 9-12 riders, representing eight states. Out Duclos went 6-4 for 4th overall front right away was Wiscon- Jamison in the very fast Open Pro Sport class. sin’s Wyatt Liebeck on his Leibeck’s sweep was good for the overall KTM. Wyatt Mattson (IL) had his Husqas Murphy (2-2) and Parmley (4-4) filled varna in second ahead of Patrick Murphy the podium. (IA) and all the others. Half way into the Team 2/ Fly/ Dunlop backed Liebeck first lap Mattson hit the ground and after the win, “I got the holeshot and just dropped way back. Liebeck and Murphy extended my lead with each lap. The held their own in the lead spots right to track is really rough now so it can be the finish. Indiana’s Kaden Parmley ran pretty hard to get smooth laps. I just kept in third until a quick tip over dropped him charging and picking good lines.” a spot, behind Brennan Wages (IL). A show everyone here was looking forMattson, after the opening lap fall rode ward to came to the starting gate next, the hard, and climbed his way back to eighth. forty-two rider Open Pro Sport class. Liebeck led the field right away off the D17 Championship Points, Qualifying start in moto two. Mattson was again for the National, ProAm points, not to showing his potential, running really well mention a nice cash payout were all on in second as Murphy wicked it up, and the line - not that these guys need a reawas trying to move up from third. As son to go fast and ride hard. The longer they started the second lap Mattson bobmotos would show who was ready to bled a bit and slipped to fourth as Murcarry the speed the entire distance as phy took over second with Parmley in well. As the pack charged into the first third. As they hit the final lap, Mattson turns, it was like the throttles never shut went to work on Parmley, eventually off. Chase Sexton in the lead. It took a few more track sections to clearly see who was running second, as they were three or more wide yet. Half a lap in, and Mississippi’s Jon Murray Barr had his Suzuki in second, just ahead of Jayce Pennington (IL), Zach Coons (WI), Justin Wolf (WI), Tyler Lowe (WI) and Jamison Duclos (WI). The only rider not fully engaged in a battle at the half way point of the moto was Geico Honda’s Chase Sexton, he was clearly a step above anyone else in the class, even this group of very fast riders. He was leaving no doubt, and pulling away convincingly. Pennington took over second. Lowe was on the move as well, working up to third on his SE Sales KTM. Barr was in fourth as the moto ended, just ahead of Michael Hicks (MO) and Duclos. In moto two, it once again was all Sexton out front. Sportland2’s Justin Wolf
Gavin Batson in the 65cc 7-11 class on his Cobra.
ran in second through the opening lap and was looking really good. As they got into lap two, the pace kicked up and some of the regular suspects pushed past him. Barr took over second and Mark Marincic also took his turn in the top three. Eventually, Lowe worked up to third ahead of an impressive ride by Duclos for fourth. Sexton, after the win, “It went really well today, as I got both moto wins. I’m really pumped on this and hope to just build on it as the season moves on. It is key to be smooth out there, and be patient with it all. The bumps are getting really big, and that changes it all. Bob did a great job on the track today as usual. Watering, and prep has been fantastic. The track simply can’t get too rough as the racing only gets better when it is challenging. Yea, it was a great day.” Sexton had a perfect weekend, winning eight of eight motos over the two days of racing. Before the first lap was complete in the 250B class, Christopher Fortier (FL) was out front on going away. Minnesota’s Benjamin Adamson was running in second but went down and dropped way into the pack. He put out a huge effort just to claw his way back to finish eighth. Michigan’s Matthew Gross took over in second as Chad Saultz (IL) ran in third to the end. Blue Crew Yamaha rider Fortier, “I got a decent start and came out in third, and then just made the passes I needed to make to get the win. The track is awesome, I’ve only been here once before, last year, but really like it. I was born in Canada and live in Florida now. I’m staying here and training with Brad (Club 57) for the summer.” The second moto ended with Fortier getting himself a sweep, going 1-1. Saultz spent most of the moto working up to an eventual, and impressive second place finish ahead of Kein Denzler (OH) and Janowski. Adamson rode hard and finished fifth. At day’s end, this weekend had to be seen as a huge success. Some luck with mother nature never hurts, but here at Sunset Ridge success is earned. Hard work to assure everyone has a great time makes all the difference, as it did once again this weekend. More Great Racing at LTM Casey, Illinois - March 20 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
A
chilly morning greeted racers at Lincoln Trail Motosports in Casey, IL. The famous Classic Track was the battle zone for almost 400 entries, but the fun really started Saturday night at the Mini Mayhem – LTM’s pit bike track. Big boys on little bikes with throttles pinned and elbows flying… that’s what we call fun! Held as a fundraiser for Action Sports EMS, these pit bike races were serious fun. Action Sports (AS-EMS) is dedicated to providing the best EMS coverage. They are here for us in the rain, the mud, and the dust. It’s all about the riders for them so this fundraiser was a chance for MX’ers to
give back. Director Ryan McClintock, Assistant Director Tom Gardner, and their entire crew are as dedicated to this sport as we are. McClintock (a former B rider himself) said of the riders “these people are our family. We never take for granted the fact that this is a dangerous sport. But I have seen some of the most respectful young men and women bar to bar with their best friends. They show dedication, responsibility and a drive to complete things that you do not see in other sports.” The races Sunday morning saw the return of Husky rider Jason Gepford. He had been rehabbing from an injury for months and was anxious to get back on the bike. His first race was in 250B. The gate held eighteen racers, but no one was beating the
Newest racer Caleb Coulter discussing track conditions.
Yamaha of Logan Dagnar who went 1-1 for the top spot overall. Going 2-2 was Nathan McClure on his KTM, who gave Dagnar a run for his money but got into traffic from another class and had to settle for the second spot overall. It was the group just behind Dagnar and McClure that mixed it up pretty good during both motos. The racers behind them traded spots throughout both motos. Third overall went to KTM rider Bryce Cox with a 4-3 finish, fourth to Gage Noblitt (3-6), and fifth overall to Dawson Chesnut who passed Gepford in the third lap of the second moto to end with a 6-4 finish. Open B racers Dagnar, McClure, Noblitt, Ethan Chesnut and Cox gave us the best show of the day. In moto one Danger was out front early but McClure got the pass near the final lap to take the checkered. Behind them came Noblitt, Cox and Chesnut. Noblitt was fierce in the second moto, taking the lead in the second lap. The battle between McClure and Danger for second came down to the final lap. Just like the first moto, McClure got the pass on Danger late in the race for the spot. Chestnut and Cox traded finishes from the first moto with Chesnut in 4th. McClure took the top overall spot with Noblitt and Dagnar rounding out the podium. In Schoolboy II Gepford was again on the track with Dawson Chesnut. Gepford took the lead after the first lap and never looked back, taking the top spot. Orion Gensler came in second on his Honda and the Yamaha of Gage Hulsey hung on for third. Dawson Chestnut was docked a lap in the first moto, but was determined to make the podium in moto two. Like Gepford in the first moto, Chestnut took the lead early and the checkered at the end. Gepford was right behind him and had to settle for runner-up in the moto but that was good enough for first place overall. Open 2-Stroke shared the gate with Schoolboy II, and that gave us the two Chesnut brothers racing their Yahamas to the checker. Dawson’s older brother Ethan took the checkered in both motos for Open 2-Stroke, taking the top of the CYCLE USA, May 2016

podium. KTM rider Ashton Hollis was running third behind Will Gibilisco, but Hollis passed him in the second lap to take second place. In the second moto Hollis stayed on the throttle, keeping Gibilisco behind him the entire race. Hollis went 2-2 for second overall.
Dawson Chesnut in the 250B class.
