2010 National Enduro Championship Series. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced the schedule for the 2010 AMA/Rekluse National Enduro Championship Series presented by Moose Racing. In addition to welcoming many favorite venues back to the schedule, the 2010 season will take the championship to Maine for the first time in decades. "This schedule has shaped up to be one of the best ever," said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. "The National Enduro Promotions Group (NEPG) has worked hard the last few years to take this series to the next level, and we're looking forward to reaching even greater heights in 2010." The National Enduro title was first awarded in 1923, and is one of the longest-running national motorsports championships in the world. The championship series features AMA Racing-sanctioned events and is one of the premier off-road racing series in the country, giving both amateur competitors and the country's fastest enduro racers a showcase for their talents. One of the highlights for many racers this summer will be the return to the national schedule of the Jack Pine Enduro. The Jack Pine dates to the first year of the championship when the race crowned the first-ever national champion. Oscar Lenz won the title that year. "With the Jack Pine once again being part of the Championship Series schedule, the return of the historic Alligator Enduro - which will celebrate its 60th running this year - and our trip to the challenging woods of the Northeast, we're looking forward to a special year in 2010," said the NEPG's Alan Randt. "We believe we've put together a program that offers our racers and fans variety, exposure and, of course, the challenging terrain and great riding that they demand." Randt says that the NEPG will continue to hone some of the improvements it has introduced to the series the last two years, including electronic scoring. "There are challenges in collecting scores from all the checks, some of which can be 20 miles out, and delivering final results in a timely manner," On The Cover: Wisconsin’s Derek Dunruiter on his way to the 250C class win at Aztalan Cycle Club’s September 13th, D16 Pro-Am motocross.

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... Randt says. "But with computer technology and cell phone coverage being what they are these days, typically if we have a strong enough signal we can provide nearly real-time scoring." Randt says that other improvements for 2010 include a more consistent pro purse, and additional factory involvement. This year's championship will begin on Jan. 31 in the Manchester State Forest near Wedgefield, S.C. The 10-round championship will wrap on Oct. 2 in Matthews, Ind. Cycle USA Contributors Wanted! Are you looking to get more involved in the sport? Maybe help cut the cost of racing next year? Covering events may be the way to do it. If your favorite events aren’t getting coverage in the magazine, you may be the one that can change that. It takes a dedicated effort, but at the same time it can be a lot of fun, and many of the clubs and promoters are looking for the assistance. Many offer complimentary entry and gate fees to contributors as well. E-mail Chuck at chuck@cycleusa.com for more information.

viewing the track with clean goggles. Nemitz of the A riders, hoping use them as traffic to got fed his fair share of some pretty thick stuff ensure starting before Magilo. for a couple laps. Schooley stayed fast to take Lapato was probably still red in the face the win ahead of Nemitz. George Balaz of at half track when he caught the Blaster Youth Lafayette and Derek Kissinger of Columbia riders. He made quick work with them and City both ran their own race. Edmondson had then set his sites on Shelhart. Once around followed Schooley and Nemitz for three solid Shelhart he charged on Fellers like a hungry laps in third and looked like he may finish lion. With only two to go he started using all there in his first race. Just as he was about to the speed the track would allow to close it up cross the stripe with only one to go, he yanked on Colip. With less than half a track remainout his tether cord and konked out. Balaz and ing in the last lap, Lapato was right on Colip's Kissinger steered around him. Balaz led rear tire when they went into the whoops. LaKissinger for one more to finish third. pato was so insistant on winning he pushed a bit to hard and pulled a get off in the whoops. The crew got to him quickly and he got up okay. Colip went on to win the Quad A with a 1-1 and Sandel took the overall in the Blaster Youth by catching the checkers in moto two to go 2-1 for first. The third race on the track saw Quad B come to the line. Six riders all vying for a win that included one rider who had never raced motocross. Ryan Edmondson of Lafayette, IN was the virgin to the format, but is a GNCC rider. When the gate dropped Michael Schooley of Warsaw raced quickest to the first turn with Sonny Nemitz coming around in second. Nemitz gave chase to Schooley for two solid laps but Schooley rode a clever race while District 15 rider Blake Niccum

hat was to be a great day of racing saw only the most dedicated participating. Unfortunately the weather played a key role in the turnout. Reads Racing Unlimited did a great job of making a track for the two races on Saturday, and kept up the great work by taking a couple more inches off the top before Sunday’s racing. The crew kept a smile on their faces, despite the wet conditions. As usual, they were committed to doing their best to see that everyone had a great weekend. Spyke's KTM in Lafayette provided a Hog Roast free of charge for anyone attending on Saturday night. Max Pitts provided many prizes for winners in a bingo tourney the night before the championship. Riders came from Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois to participate in this event. Thanks everyone! You came all this way to race in some disturbing conditions, showing true dedication. The day began with the Quad A and Blaster Youth Quad. Chris Fellers of Middletown, IN grabbed the holeshot in Quad A and Christopher Magilo of Wheatfield, IN started ahead of Sandel of Fort Wayne, IN in the Blaster Youth. Daniel Colip of New Palestine, IL waited only three corners before he soared ahead of Fellers at the back of the track to take the lead in the Quad A. Eric Lapato of Cedar Lake, IN and Fellers did some serious bar to bar racing for nearly the entire first lap to decide second place. Lapato finally made a pass stick on a tabletop. Fellers now had to hold off Scott Shelhart of Claypool, IN which I assumed was gonna be a tough chore. Shelhart rode smart and fast to match Fellers lap times. Colip won the by forty yards with Lapato second, and Fellers third. Meanwhile Magilo was holding down a comfortable lead on Sandel in the Blaster Youth before on the final lap Sandel began making up ground fast. All at once there was another race on the track. Sandel created a chance for himself and leaped past Magilo at center track. Not bothered by the pass, Magilo showed Sandel the fast way thru the whoops just afterward to take the lead right back. With only a couple more jumps Sandel didn't have enough time for another attempt. Magilo was scored first. Moto two began with Lapato slammin' head into the gate before it fell. In Blaster Youth, Sandel got a fantastic start and came into the first corner right in the thick Quad A class going into turn two with Chris Fellers and Eric Lapato out front.

In moto two Nemitz won the holeshot. Schooley drifted a corner while staying on the pipe and then one line became two. Side by side the leaders raced the back section to begin the first lap but before the end of the section Schooley had beaten Nemitz to the turn. He floored it is what he did. Schooley would again ride to victory with Nemitz a close second. Edmondson started third but couldn't match the speed of Kissinger and Balaz who had swapped positions from the earlier outing but were clocking much faster lap times. This could only mean that the track was improving. Kissinger went 4-3 for third and Balaz 3-4 for fourth. Ryan Korody going to a win on his Mini Quad. Race four read like a took the, well let's call it "proving something ten year old Reads Racing gate order, only to himself" award. Don started third in moto everyone was in different classes. The race one and second in moto two. Don who is also combined +30A Don Butler of Huntington, a +40 rider enjoys holeshoting and he's good IN, Women 85cc-250cc rider Cady Pressler, at it. He pulled the holeshot on Blake once three Open A riders, Blake Niccum, Camron and Cady twice. Pressler, and Brad Kopsho. It also included Eleven 85cc 9-11 riders staged for race Open C rider Micheal Wesselman, and +50 five. Jordan Parmley of Daleville, IN was riders Terry Coby and Milt Cox. Not a real quickest out of the box. The next number barn burner I'm sad to say, but extra fun for plate I saw was Jacob White of Marion, IN. anyone like me who's seen thousands of Parmley led White nearly the entire first lap Reads Racing motos. Open A rider Camron with Jagg Nunez third. White tried several Pressler won both holeshots and won both times to pass Parmley but none of them would motos. Open A rider Blake Niccum who was stick. But just before the stripe nearing the end recently seen in an episode of MADE on of one, White dedicated himself to a great line MTV finished second in both motos. Blake is in an off-cambered corner and stayed on the very well liked among his fellow riders. Blake pipe as he leaped a tabletop, came down while is another who's been racing the circuit for still on the gas, and put himself bar to bar to years and has plenty of talent. Don Butler take the lead and begin lap two. Nunez was

next to give Parmley fits and did so for two whole laps. At the end of three, Nunez also got around Parmley. White went on to win moto one ahead of Nunez and Parmley. In moto two Parmley once again got the holeshot, but White wasted no time gettin' around Parmley to take the lead. Seth Felger of Fort Wayne joined the leaders and started third. Nunez was sleeping at the gate, and worked three solid laps getting caught back up. Parmley remembered how White got around him in moto one and did the exact same thing to him in moto two, in the exact same spot. White sorely wanted to win though and never once let Parmley off the hook after the pass. With just one and a half to go and bar to bar with Parmley over a monster tabletop, White's motor went south. What a shame! Nunez inched his way through the pack and around Felger, sending him to third. Felger finish 4-3 for third. Nunez second, while Parmley crossed the stripe to win his first D15 Midwest Amateur Championship. Nine Mini Quads and a sole Mini Quad Jr. rider made up race six. Ryan Korody of Canton, MI made the trek from up North to introduce himself to an unfamiliar group. Korody spent no time finding a clear path to the front in both motos. Korody took the win with Blake Sarver from Peru, IN second. Third place belonged to Abby Bowyer. Abby rode two nearly flawless motos. Her sister Emily

raced solo this weekend and took home the win in the Mini Quad Jr. When the 65's got their turn, Chandler Pitts from Peru, IN grabbed the early lead with Eddie Norred of Bristol, WI second. Braden Groves used a wide line at the start and merged bar to bar with Pitts, but safely chopped throttle to fall in behind Norred for third. Norred waited until those first corner jitters disappeared, then opened it up and got around Pitts after just a couple sections to take the lead. Pitts bobbled allowing Groves to slip around for second and gave Jett Janowski and Connor Brew a peek at his rear fender also. Janowski got around and that's just about when Pitts decided he'd had enough. To begin lap two Pitts went from fifth to third and then second doing all he could to leave the traffic behind. Norred had an open track. Pitts rode like every corner was the last and soon was back trailing Norred by only a few bike lengths. It was a close pack nearing the end of three with Norred in the lead, Pitts second, a small gap and then Janowski. Brew closed on up Groves to keep the it exciting but it got better when Pitts made a pass for the lead in the back section of the track and went on to win. Janowski defended a challenge to regain third placing Groves fourth and Brew a

close fifth. Brew holeshoted the group to start moto two and led an entire lap before going down. Pitts then led the race until lap three when Norred decided he didn't come all this way for nothing. He raced his heart out to win and go 2-1 for the overall. Groves did a better job with Janowski in moto two to go 4-3 for third ahead of Janowski’s 3-4. They all met up again in the 65cc 7-11. Janowski came out the winner by going 3-1. Norred second with a 2-2 and Pitts third (13). Any of these riders could have won this Championship which they proved by giving us more position changes and passes than any race I can remember in recent history. Madison Johnson of Anderson, IN went 1-1 in the Women’s 65-85, just in time to start preparing for her upcoming competition in Las Vegas. Michael Wesselman from Bargersville,

from on the track "stand up" would have been brought to tears watching this mighty mite. You couldn't get him to sit down. He only sat in the corners and after a lap he was only on the seat in half of them. Remember the name, Lucas Grounds! You learned of him first here!

oung Danny Schumann missed a perfect night at the Pleasure Riders M/C hill climb on September 12th by less than three hundredths of a second, taking two class wins and a second, plus the Fast Time of the Day award. He had to come from far behind in the 600cc class on the 160 foot hill, sitting in seventh place at the intermission, with Matt Peters in the lead. In the second round, four riders broke into the threes, with Schumann at the top with a sizzling 3.866 second time, which would also win him the Fast Time award. Dylan Brady was second with a 3.913 second time while Dan Groth posted a 3.949 for third. Schumann’s 4.106 second run on his KTM380 in the first round of the 450cc class held up all night for that win, ahead of runner up Dan Groth who carded 4.260 seconds. Brian Klett was close behind Groth with 4.283 seconds on his Yamaha. In the 250cc class, Schumann set the first round fast time at 4.107 seconds, which looked very good until Matt Peters flew over the top in 4.078 seconds in the second round. Schumann couldn’t improve on his first ride and had to settle for second by less than three hundredths of a second, that close to a clean sweep perfect night. Levi Peters and Joe McGurer enjoyed double class win evenings as Kyle Galloway

in the 50 and 65cc youth classes. Carrying the National #1 plate on his KTM50, he topped the hill in 5.236 seconds for the 50cc class win, with Reece Hutton second and Braden Young third. On his KX65, Peters posted a 5.108 second time for the 65cc class win, with Clint Garriott second and Landen Noggle third. McGurer took his first win with a 4.591 second time on his KX85 to win the Junior Mini class, a time which also was good for the Youth Fast Time award. He claimed his second win in the 125cc class, with Lonnie Estes second. Kyle Galloway took double wins in the stock classes. He came from behind in 400 Stock, where his first round ride had him in third place at the break behind Andy Fortner and Mike Pulver. Things speeded up in the second half, and Galloway took the win with a 4.089 second time, with Fortner second with a 4.107. Al Hoskins claimed third. Galloway had to overtake Pulver for the Open Stock win, as Pulver took the first round lead with a 4.124 second time on his CR500. In the second round, Galloway flew his Kawasaki over the top in 4.078 seconds for the win. Galloway’s third win came in the 200cc

class ahead of Chris Senn and Keith Klett. In the Sunday edition of the doubleheader, fifty-one year-old Randy ‘Rocketman’ Trosper showed everyone that old, is not necessarily slow. Trosper was perfect in the amateur competition with three class wins, and posting the first and second fastest times of the day. Matt Peters posted an early fast time with a sizzling 3.912 run on his first ride in the 250cc class. Then Trosper flew his CR500 over the top in 3.904 seconds on his first ride in the Senior class for that win, and setting a new Fast Time. The buzz about an ‘old guy’ going that fast hadn’t settled when Trosper brought his Honda to the line in Super Sr, and thrilled the crowd with an even faster 3.882 second run. Keith Klett and Steve Horath claimed the next spots in the Super Sr class. Trosper wasn’t done yet. Riding a CR500 in the Open Stock class, he carded a 4.115 second time on his first ride, which held up for that win. Mike Pulver was second in 4.234 seconds with ‘Big Al’ Petty third. Trosper finished with three class wins and the top two fastest times in only three runs at the hill - not bad for an old guy, me thinks! Peters was a double class winner, adding the 600cc class win to go with his 250cc victory, but it wasn’t easy. His first round time had him down in fourth place at intermission, but he blasted over the top in 3.920 seconds on his second ride to take the lead. Dylan Brady was the first round leader, then incredibly posted a 3.920 second ride in the second round, tying Peters. Peters twisted the throttle a bit tighter on his tie breaker run and flew his KX500 over in 3.877 seconds. Brady was fast again, but his 3.897 seconds left him just two hundredths behind and in second. Brady still had a great day, and got even with Peters, by winning the coveted ‘King Of

The Hill’ award. The Peters family had a particularly good day, as Matt’s son, Levi, also claimed two wins. Levi took the wins in the 50cc and 65cc classes, repeating his performance of the night before. Reece Hutton and Cline Garriott were second and third in the 50cc class, and Clint Garriott and Andrew Fortner followed him in the 65cc class. Joe McGurer was also a repeat double class winner, taking the 85Sr class and the 125cc wins, as well as the Youth Fast Time award. acers compete for different reasons. For some it is a social activity with their friends and family. A select few do it to make a living, for most of us it is all about fun, and competing. For those chasing trophies today was their lucky day as South Fork gave every rider a trophy. This may not be a big deal to some but there are riders out there that will never get a trophy. Mother of 65 rider Christopher Kirkwood said, “this is only his second race ever, and for him to be able to take home a trophy is great, and we will be back for sure. With the extra awards making people happy, one thing that kept them on their toes and guessing all day was the weather. What a strange day for sure. It would rain for two or three motos, then quit, in fact when it came to half time we all thought that would be the end but the rain let up. One class that seemed to not have many problems with the weather and had fun was +45. In the first moto Honda rider Scott Delmastro charged to the front taking the moto win with Gary Brunner second and Honda rider Rod Burger third. In the second moto Brunner and Delmastro were again out front in a great battle. This time Brunner took the moto and overall win with Delmastro second for the moto and overall. Behind these riders things were a shaken up. The Gulley brothers leading 250A. After a third place finish in the first moto Burger found himself on the ground and out of the top three. After a fifth place finish in the first moto Yamaha rider Dave Pfeiffer put in one of his best rides of the year for third and third overall. Some riders are racing for green. With Kawasaki and Husky posting contingency for the series, a winner on one of those bikes can bring in some big money for the day. In the Open A and the 250A classes it was a shootout between Kawasaki riders Justin Freund and brothers Aaron and Adam Gulley. In the Open A class Freund took both moto wins for the overall with Aaron Gulley second both motos and overall. Adam Gulley finished third. In the 250A class Aaron Gulley took the first moto win with Adam Gulley second and Freund third. In the second moto Freund was on the gas and put his two-stroke back out front for the moto win. Aaron Gulley finished second and took the money and overall. 10

Big changes at New Hartford Women’s class a thriller Sunday New Hartford, Iowa - Sept 19/20 By Mark D. Bonnell

F

or several weeks there have been rumors going around the Iowa motocross community that the club at New Hartford Racing was going to surprise everyone with a lot of changes. It was even said that the track would even have a section that went into the woods, like it did back in the 70’s and early 80’s. Many thought it was just rumors, but were surprised when they pulled into the palatial Rambling Wheels facility. The rumors must have worked, well over 500 entries and 1,500 spectators were on hand for the weekend’s worth of racing and entertainment. The track was indeed different, very different. From the starting gate, riders would be going straight and entering the track in the opposite direction from the direction they had gone for many years. From that point it was clear that every obstacle had been reworked to accommodate the reverse direction of the track. After the finish-line tabletop, the track

Kayla Allers charging hard.

turned in front of the starting gate, down a fast straight, over a fly-a-way jump and into a new wooded section. The wooded section made a sharp left-hander that headed into a highspeed sweeper that went deep into the woods. From there, riders were able to click up a gear or two before heading back onto the old track area. Everyone seemed to enjoy the new wooded section as well as the fast straight that led to the far end of the track. The new track allowed for excellent racing. One of the most exciting classes of the weekend was the Women’s class on Sunday. As the class left the line in moto one, Rochelle Charnowski, Marissa Busby and Nicole Weis proved to be most comfortable with the new high-speed start, and were already pulling away from the rest of the racers. As the pack entered the second turn, several riders tangled near the middle of the pack and Breanna Brown and Keshia Cooke went down hard. Both stuck under their machines and were sprawled across the track. The decision was made to red flag the race to protect the riders. Brown was able to restart, but Cooke was out for the moto. On the restart, Charnowski once again was out front, but this time it was Tori Klein close behind in second. Weis was right behind the two leaders as the field made their way around the fast, sweeping turns leading towards the rear of the track. Klein was able to get next to Charnowski a few times on the opening lap. The crowd was on their feet as the riders completed lap one with Klein less than a second behind Charnowski and Weis and Busby less than a second behind them. Near the middle of the second lap, Klein crashed. This allowed Charnowski to gap the field by a couple of seconds. Weis and Busby were now the two that most had their eyes on as they were entering and exciting the corners side by side. Marissa Cozine worked her way through the pack and into a close fourth ahead of Kayla Allers.

Marissa Busby rode well to finish second overall both days.

Busby found a way around Weis in the whoop section. On the final lap, Allers also joined the race for second through fourth as Charnowski pulled away. At the end of the moto Busby was able to stay in front of Weis for second. Allers rounded out the top five. Moto two got underway without incident. Charnowski again was out front with Klein, Weis and Busby close behind. Klein and Charnowski once again were going at it corner to corner as the first lap unfolded. Cozine and Hailee Mcdonald were also putting on a show for fifth place near the end of the first lap. As the second lap got underway, Klein was using sweeping outside lines leading to the wooded section. She made the important pass as she exited the wooded section. As the riders made their way towards the back section of the track, Busby managed to pass Weis. Cozine was putting in a great moto and pushing Weis during the third lap, and made a pass as the pair headed back towards the spectator area. The pass put Cozine in a solid fourth for the remainder of the moto. Weis held on for fifth, but faced a late moto charge from Mcdonald and Allers. CYCLE USA, November 2009

Even though Klein had pulled away for the moto win, Charnowski’s consistent 1-2 score earned her the day’s win. Busby’s 2-3 earned her second ahead of Cozine’s 4-4 finishes. Miller muscles in for Millville win Millville, Minnesota September 20 By Rolfe Otterness

H

enry Miller swept all his 85cc motos to take two solid overall wins and cap off his season at the ninth and final round of the 2009 Spring Creek Super Series. Miller also happened to capture the season title in both the 85cc 9-11 and 9-12 classes, so it was a particularly good day for the young rider. There was a fair turnout of riders with over 400 entries, and the track was in pretty good shape with the weather allowing for a full day of racing. There was some good talent on hand in the A classes, but Alex Martin was back home and riding with a vengeance sweeping all his motos for six wins against the tough competition.

immediately Miller launched his YZ85 into the lead as the gate dropped on moto one of the 85 9-11 class. Tyler Willing succeeded in latching onto second by the end of the first lap while a trio consisting of Nick Schnagl, Sam Wise and Hunter Teichrib proceeded to scrap over third. Miller started to stretch out his lead as the race progressed and Schnagl closed a bit on Willing. By the time the checkered flew Miller had quite a gap over Willing. Schnagl was closing in third just a bit behind and Wise held steadfast for fourth over Teichrib despite some pressure. Moto two featured another charge to the front by Miller who led strongly all the way and ended up with a huge win. Schnagl and Teichrib were battling throughout the race, and to Schnagl’s credit, he held on to take second by a couple bike

lengths at the finish. Trey Moore had to work his way by Alan Spaeth to grab fourth. Wise and Willing had a tougher go of it in this moto and followed in Spaeth for sixth and seventh. Adam Johnson shot out front as the Vet B class entered the fray for moto one with Curt Caswell and Joe Pfankuch providing backup. Johnson had the edge and began to roost off into the distance. Caswell lost second near the end of lap one when Pfankuch nailed the triple and cut in to take over the position. From there on through, the order of finish was set. Johnson gapped the field and Pfankuch maintained a small cushion over Caswell to the flag. Nathan Arndt held out for fourth over Michael Janovsky who held fifth over a gaggle of riders disputing sixth. Moto two once again proved to be an Adam Johnson affair as he led all the way to take a commanding win. Caswell on the RM450 maintained a solid second for the duration. Pfankuch had a mediocre start but caught and passed Richard Ziebell near the midpoint of the race to nail down third. The final piece of the moto-two puzzle was the fifth place of Arndt who

cruised in just a bit back. It was good to have Alex Martin back in the mix after he missed most of the season’s races to contest the nationals. In one of the few races he did make he had to taste the bitter dregs of defeat at the hands of Brandon Haas, and he was out for revenge this time. (Don’t feel bad Alex, some us swill down the bitter dregs of defeat every single time we hit the track!) Haas was back for another go at it along with Dalton Carlson, Nick Jackson, Joe Perron and some other fast A guys. Martin charged out front in the first 14-24 moto with Nick Jackson dropping into pursuit. Jackson couldn’t stick with Martin, but he held on for a solid second over Joe Perron by the end of the race. Jesse Johnson and Trent Hinrichs had good rides to round out the top five. Jackson managed to get the start in moto two but Martin was soon by for the lead. While those two established themselves solidly out front, Johnson and Perron got into a scrap over third which lasted most of the race. At the conclusion of the moto, Martin had the win. Johnson edged Perron after the long battle over third and fifth went to Hinrichs.

Brandon Haas pulled the holeshot on his two-stroke as the 250A class was let loose. Haas led thru lap one with Martin pressuring. Just a bit behind them Nick Jackson and Dalton Carlson were duking it out over third. Martin got by Haas on the second lap and started to slip away bit-by-bit for the rest of the moto. Haas held second while Carlson nailed down third. Jackson held onto fourth with pressure from Jamie Ledin for the last half of the moto. Haas holeshotted again in moto two, but Martin took command before the end of the first lap. For the rest of the moto Haas and Carlson ran solidly in second and third just a couple of seconds behind Martin. Ledin managed to take fourth after a long battle with Jackson and that gave him fourth overall. ound four of the Fox Valley Off-Road hare scramble series logged over 230 racers. All of the courses had a great layout, with a mix of different obstacles and terrain, including “three log hill,” an 80 foot wide uphill section with three decent sized logs up the climb. The quads were the first race to take on the hill, followed by the 85cc/65cc classes, and finally the big bikes. The hill was a spectator hot spot, with several passes due to the endless line choices. Thirty-five quads started the race day, with A-rider Scott Burkitt leading all riders through the shortened first checkpoint. Shane Gaunt turned a blazing 8:24 on the first complete lap, which was the fastest lap of the entire quad race. Gaunt logged several more fast laps en route to the Quad A win. Burkitt stayed within reach of Gaunt until lap five, when a problematic lap dropped Burkitt him into the pack. Daniel Burkitt led the first four laps in Quad +35, until Bradley Holder put together a fast lap five to more into the lead, just two seconds in front of Burkitt. Holder led through the checkpoint for the next three laps, with Burkitt right on his rear wheels, with a gap of one second or less. Then Holder had problems on the final lap, and didn’t come around for the final checkpoint, giving Burkitt the win. Kevin Johnson was the only other +35 rider to finish all nine laps for second place, trailed by Holder, Tim Storey, and Dan Siener. In the 16-rider Quad C class, Brandon Chapman led through the first checkpoint, chased by Brandon Haly, Cody Smith, and Riley Brueggren. Smith moved out front after the first complete lap, with Haly and Brueggren within a few seconds. Haly took over the lead after three laps, until Brueggren moved out front on lap four, chased by Smith and Haly. Smith regained the lead on lap five, and put together five solid laps to be the only Quad C rider to finish nine laps. Brueggren finished second, with Jason Noble, Haly, and David Singleton wrapping up the top five. Colten Zuidema led the twenty-rider 65cc Beginner class at the first checkpoint, trailed by Aspen Park, Doug Propper, and Bryce Otterbach. Park took over the lead on lap two, and the top four stayed within seconds of each other through the opening laps. Zuidema moved back into the lead on lap four, followed by Park and Otterbach. Park stayed right on Zuidema, less than two seconds behind, for several laps, until he lost some time with a rough lap ten. The top nine riders all finished eleven laps, with Zuidema

taking the win. Otterbach finished second, just 12 seconds back. Eli Otterbach grabbed the 50Sr holeshot, followed by Garrett Ward, Dalton Garecht, and Autumn Torres. Otterbach led through the first checkpoint, trailed by Ward, Shawn Thompson, Tanner Whipple, and Torres. Otterbach stayed ahead for three laps, until Thompson moved out front on lap four. Thompson led the next seven laps, chased by Whipple. On lap eleven, Thompson had a rough lap, while Whipple took over the lead and pushed ahead for the win. Thompson finished second. In the ten-rider 50Jr class, Kyle Green had the holeshot, but Nathan Metz led at the first checkpoint, trailed by Jake Oelfke, Green, and Micah Alleman. Oelfke moved out front on lap two, but Green was the new leader on lap three. Green led the next five laps, but he didn’t register on the final checkpoint, handing Alleman the win. Oelfke finished second, just 10 seconds behind Alleman. Green, Carter Holder, and Jaden Torres completed the top five. Veronica Martin led the Women’s class at the first checkpoint, chased by Chelsea

Marfell, Hannah Keith, and Kim Chandler. Marfell and Martin diced the entire race, sprinting through the course and weaving through lapped traffic within a bike length of each other for the final three laps. On the final lap, Marfell turned a 6:20 to secure the win, which was the fastest lap of the class. Martin finished just two seconds back. Keith, Taylor Clark, and Nikki Dixon rounded out the top five. The seventeen-rider Thumper class had a good laugh at the starting area, as several riders wore water wings, inner tubes, and snorkels, after Thumper class regular John Conley ended up in the creek at round three. The good humor brought Conley luck in the start, as he led through the first checkpoint, followed by Sam Esposito and Nicholas Broll. Father and son combination Mark and Tony Spizzirri quickly moved through the pack on the first full lap. Mark Spizzirri led at the next checkpoint, followed by Broll and Tony Spizzirri, while Conley crashed and dropped back to fourth. Mark Spizzirri and Broll diced for the lead, trading positions a few times in the early laps. Then on an uphill, Spizzirri threw his chain, while Broll pulled ahead.

86-Open A winner Kyleer Vance finished second overall.

Spizzirri got back going again in fourth place, and reeled in Conley and Tony over the next four laps. But despite turning some of the fastest laps of the race, Spizzirri couldn’t reel in leader Broll. The snorkel and tube were good luck as Broll carded his first Thumper class hare scramble win, followed by Mark Spizzirri, Tony Spizzirri, Conley, and Dylan Broll. Travis Ward and Mitchell Ternes led the 85cc class into the woods. Dalton Brough, Tanner Porter, Nate Hornung, and Ternes trailed Ward through the first checkpoint. Brough held down the second spot during the ten lap race. Devon Fredrick charged up from ninth place on the first lap to finish third at the checkers, just three seconds behind Brough. Fredrick also logged the fastest lap of the race, with a 6:09 on his final lap. Ternes and Riley Schuhler mixed it up for fourth, with Ternes turning the second fastest lap of the race, with a 6:15 on the final lap, to edge out Schuhler for fourth. Hornung ran in third for several laps early in the race, but eventually finished sixth, and was the final rider to complete ten laps. Over 100 big bikes filled the starting area for the final race of the day. AA class winner Trey Verado led eight of nine laps, despite a tough challenge from Jeremy Smith during the first half of the race. Nineteen riders finished on the lead lap, which included winners of six different classes. Only three riders were able to break the 11-minute lap mark, which were AA riders Verado and Smith, and 86Open A winner Kyleer Vance. Verado led at the first checkpoint in AA, just over two minutes into the race, followed

by Lee Lankutis, Nolan Whitesell, and Smith, who were all within a few seconds. Smith dropped the hammer on the first complete lap, turning a 10:44 to take over the lead, 17 seconds in front of Verado. But Verado answered back on the next lap with a 10:24, which would be the fastest lap of the day in all classes, which put him in front of Smith. The two continued to battle and match lap times for the next three laps, blazing around the

course until a crash ended Smith’s day. Verado continued to turn fast laps to take the win ahead of second place Lankutis. In the 86-Open A class, Kyleer Vance had the early lead, chased by Jay Hall, Jeffery Kaylor, and Jeff Snedecor. Kaylor took over the lead after the first complete lap, but Vance turned a 10:44 on the next lap, which was the fastest of the class, to regain the lead. Kaylor stayed within striking distance for the next

few laps, matching Vance’s lap times. Kaylor finished second, followed by Snedecor in third. Hall had an eleven second cushion on Jesse Keith at the white flag, but Keith dug deep on the final lap to reel in Hall for fourth at the checkers. Clinton Pherigo grabbed the +30A holeshot followed by Tim Farrell. Pherigo, Farrell, and John Stichnoth led at the first checkpoint, but Patrick McClure charged through the pack on the first full lap to become the new leader. McClure then strung together several laps to inch away from the field, while Pherigo and Farrell mixed it up for second, trading positions several times. McClure carded the win, with Pherigo edging out Farrell for second. Oscar Rodriguez and Jason Schultz wrapped up the top five. Gary Peterson was the early leader in the +50 class, trailed by Wally Mika, Don Carqueville, and Doug Johnson at the first check. Peterson held off Mika until lap four, when Mika was the first +50 rider to break the 12minute mark, with an 11:52. Mika put together more laps in the 11-minute range to pull away for the win in the nine lap race. Mika’s win makes him the only rider to win all four rounds at FVOR this year. Peterson and Carqueville wrapped up the podium, and finished on the lead lap. Doug Propper led the +30C class through the first checkpoint, chased by Matt Wamhoff, Jerimy Hanlin, Steve Perkins, and Brian Doughty. Perkins charged into the lead on the first complete lap, followed by Hanlin and Wamhoff. Perkins then turned consistent laps to stay in front of Hanlin. Rain soaked riders and family before the Mini classes start. Freeman, Indiana September 20 By David Dunnuck

T

he fifth and final round of the Southern Indiana Series Championship of 2009 was held at the Guthrie property in Freeman, Indiana. The property had experienced an eighteen-day drought which was broken on Saturday evening. The rain started the night before and remained off and on throughout the entire event. The PeeWee riders faced significant challenges with the slick and greasy hillsides and wet grass track sections. Joshua Pyne jumped out to an early lead which he held until a late race crash on the slick roots allowed the D15 points leader, Langdon Feltner to take control with two laps remaining. With Pyne struggling to recover, Tanner Guerrettaz was pressuring Feltner for the race lead. Guerrettaz tried his best but ended just seconds behind Feltner. Jacob Stark continued his dominance and landed another victory in the Injector class. Lance Maschino apparently enjoyed the track conditions landing the second place finish, his best finish to date. Matthew Hatchet stepped up in the adverse conditions with full intentions of staking his claim on the top podium spot in the SuperMini class. Hatchet held off Clay Sullivan by a mere two seconds on the first lap, but then proceeded to extend that lead on the following laps. Hatchet rode a smooth and consistent race landing another victory for 2009. Luke Chilman fired out with the holeshot in the 85cc class looking to land another victory and to extend his points lead in the D15 series. Taylor Day was not about to sit back and let him run away, coming in on Chilman’s tale on the first lap. Day and Chilman continued to take turns leading the race until the checkered flag flew with Day just seconds ahead of Chilman followed by Austin Lee. In the 65cc class, we saw fifteen riders

leave the start. Jacob Pyne appeared to have a solid grasp on the lead with second through fourth up for grabs. Eric Douglass came through strong on the first lap followed by Vincent Smith and Tate Guerrettaz. Guerrettaz has found himself at the bottom of the recent 65cc race battles and was determined to change that trend. Guerrettaz moved ahead of Smith by the end of the second lap and set his sights on Douglass who was running three seconds ahead in second. By the end of the third lap, Guerrettaz had taken the second place position and he never looked back. The big bike event was welcomed with the return of the rain which had stopped shortly after the start of the mini race. Of those who braved the gloomy weather forecast and actually started, eight out of fiftyfour eventually finished all seven laps. The SIS scoring team did a great job remaining composed throughout the event, recording 285 entries at the checkpoint. John Maschino wasted no time setting the pace on the first lap. Hot on the heels of the leader were Jake Fiddler and Zachary Nash, both looking to take the lead away from Farmer John. By the end of the second lap, we had a new leader. Fiddler, turning it up a notch had taken the lead from Maschino. Nathan Sullivan was displaying true grit on the course, ripping through the checkpoint in third place followed by Daniel Sims and Nash. While there were no changes in the top five positions from the second lap onward, there were several class battles developing within the field. One key battle was in the Senior A SIS championship. The championship was close enough that it would be determined by this final series event. Troy Lee held a five point lead over David Dunnuck who had to place ahead of Lee and score at least five points on Lee in order to win. Robert Williams showed the crowd that he was there for business with the impressive holeshot. Somewhere during the first lap, Williams gave way to Dunnuck who came through the

check in the lead at the end of lap one. Douglas Day was next through. Following on their heels were Williams, Craig Moore and then Lee. While Dunnuck, Day and Williams ran tire to tire for three laps, Lee struggled to work his way through traffic and join the leaders. Day eventually pulled out with engine failure and Williams got hung up in a traffic jam at the rocky hill climb allowing Lee to clear the crowd and set his sights on Dunnuck. Lee charged hard only to fall short and getting lapped by Fiddler eliminating any chance of catching Dunnuck who made it through prior to the overall leaders. Jake Fiddler took the checkered flag at the end of the seventh lap with Maschino landing second place. Sullivan was challenged by Sims at the end, but was successful at maintaining his third place. In the end it was a great race with two different leaders, but it was Fiddler taking the win. Sewell sews-up Aztalan Pro-Am Lake Mills, Wisconsin September 13 By Dave Hollub

A

s the race weekend neared, speculation was growing as to who would show up and if someone would dominate the ProAm classes this year. In 2007 when Aztalan last hosted a Pro- Am it was James Povolny who dominated, and after watching him take control at the Senior series race on Saturday, it looked like a repeat. Still on Friday there were several very fast guys out dialing in the track, and it was obvious nobody had the edge to walk away with the overalls this year. Everything was perfect for a race day as the track crew worked hard after the Saturday races were over. Last year’s thunderstorms were replaced with a cloudless sky and mid 80 degree temperatures to put the finishing touches on a great day of racing. Before the Pros got to hit the Shane Sewell took all four Pro-Am track the future stars of Wisconsin and two Unlimited A class moto wins. motocross headed out, and in the 50Sr class it was Dylan Densow ripkept battling for a little bit. ping out a big holeshot. I Marescalco wedged his way passed him just after the triple triple then we

between Fredrick and Cochran. Marescalco then went to work on Fredrick and in the barn section on lap four slipped past to take away fourth. Moto two started with a bit of confusion as the gate dropped for a parade lap but it appeared half the field was not told what was going on and they took off to race. Once everyone was collected back in the gate the real gate drop saw Pope rocket out. Despite a great effort by Garrett, he wasn’t able to catch Pope and had to settle for second in the moto. Marescalco once again had his work cut out for him as he diced his way through the class and by the end of lap one he was sitting in fifth behind Cochran. Back in the west sand section on lap three Marescalco made his move and by the time he jumped the plateau he was running third, and despite a last lap challenge from Andy Kost he was able to hold on to the finish. Pope (1/1) took the overall while Garrett (2/2) was second and Ethan Runkle scored Shane Sewell’s jersey at the end of the day.

Marescalco (4/3) took third. Next on the agenda was the Women’s class and Kirsten Raemisch grabbed the holeshot while Brittany Curelo and Andrea Walsdorf battled for second. Walsdorf had the advantage but by the end of the lap Curelo had grabbed second. Soon after Walsdorf began feeling pressure from Kaylen Pellmann and on the west end Pellmann made her move into third. In moto two Curelo grabbed the holeshot on the inside as Raemisch stayed to the outside line. Raemisch made a quick pass for the lead and once again hit cruise after gaining some breathing room. Curelo settled into second while Walsdorf fought back Pellmann’s charge. Pellmann looked ready to make the pass but on the backside of a jump Walsdorf went down and unable to avoid the collision Pellmann hit the ground as well. Pellmann got up and was only able to manage a tenth place moto finish while Walsdorf was forced to DNF. The two riders down opened the door for Ashley Densow to grab third with Stephanie Hinze running fourth. On the white flag lap Jade Wennlund put a hard charge on Hinze and before the checkers flew grabbed fourth place. Raemisch (1/1) took the overall win with Curelo (2/2) second and Densow (5/3) third. The 65cc moto one holeshot went to Anthony Wallace on his KTM but Jamison Duc-

los was in the lead by the time everyone came over the plateau. Tristin Toney had also gotten by Wallace and set out to try catching Duclos. Back in fourth place Jake Nethery had to protect against Eddie Norred until the end of lap two when Norred found an opening while Duclos took the moto win. Toney took the holeshot in moto two with Duclos right on his rear wheel. Duclos made the pass in the back section and Norred quickly moved up to second. The two front runners were enjoying the open track, but Toney had Jason Mack breathing down his neck. On the second trip over the plateau Mack held the throttle just long enough to jump over Toney into third place. Just when it looked like everyone had settled into a position Mack went down slipping back to eighth place and then Norred went down in the finish corners and slipped back into a sixth place moto finish. Duclos (1/1) topped the overall finish with Toney (2/2) second and Wallace (3/3) taking third. Timmy Baake led the 85Sr. class through the holeshot in moto one. Half a lap later Andy Kost was now out front with Jake Seipel second in front of Baake. Justin Wolf had raced his way from a mid pack start to challenge Baake on lap three, and then as they jumped the plateau on the final lap Wolf out jumped Baake for the position. In moto two it was Baake once again out

front at the holeshot. Kost and Wolf made it past Baake on lap one in the west sand section. By the time lap two started Seipel was in third, but right in his shadow was a hard running Baake. Kost took the moto win and the overall with his 1/1 finish. Wolf (3/2) was second overall and Seipel finished up the top three for 85Sr. Now it was time for the 250A Pro-Am riders to hit the track and first around the holeshot was James Povolny with Shane Sewell and Drew Yenerich closest in second and third. Sewell was pushing hard and the two front runners were within bike lengths of each other. Sewell kept sticking his tire in trying to wedge past Povolny. On lap six in the west end Sewell finally found the opening and slipped into the lead. Povolny was not ready to give up and put constant pressure on Sewell to the finish. The moto win went to Sewell. In moto two A class newcomer Sam Long grabbed an impressive holeshot aboard his Motosports Factory KTM, but Sewell made fast work of taking the lead in the next stretch. Long was then passed by Yenerich and now was being pushed by Brad Behrens. Despite slowly fading back Long put on a great ride and showed he is an upcoming threat in the A class. By the end of the moto Povolny had battled his way through the class to a third place finish. Sewell took the overall win with a perfect 1/1 while Yenerich (3/2)

grabbed second and Povolny (2/3) finished the top three off. Sewell later commented on the overall win “I feel great right now. Povolny and Yenerich are always riding good. My good buddy Bob Raduenz let me borrow his bike. He let me ride his 250 2-stroke and it has been about four years since I have ridden one of those. I’m hoping 2 strokes come back because that bike is a blast to ride. I’m getting ready for the SX season and getting some of these last money races in, then hopefully going into the SX season healthy. Thanks to my sponsors Scott goggles, MSR gear, ProTaper, Rock River, I really appreciate them all and everything they do for me.” The holeshot in moto one of the 250C-2 had some added excitement when both Zachary Masch and Robert Stambolic hit the corner side by side. Stambolic got kicked left

“Big John” Meehan in the +50 class.

CYCLE USA, November 2009

into the rear tire of Masch almost putting them both on the ground in front of the twenty-eight other riders. Stambolic fortunately rolled off the outside of the track while Masch held on and led the class onto the track. By the beginning of lap two Justin Hall had powered to the front with Cameron Cochran and Jeffrey Kriz close behind. Masch worked his way past Raymond Barnes on lap two and then started working on Kriz. Masch finally got around Kriz on lap three in the west end. Meanwhile Cochran had gotten the lead away from Hall and would finish the moto first. Hall was second to the flag with Masch closing in. Hall edged out Masch for the moto two holeshot but Masch took the lead before the first tunnel jump. The running order quickly became Masch, Cochran, Stambolic, Eli Siordia and Vinny Dodulik. On the last jump over the plateau it was Siordia with the extra power to jump over Stambolic for third. Cochran (1/2) was the overall winner with Masch (3/1) second and Hall (2/6) third. SF Performance kicked in cash for the Open A Pro-Am holeshots and in moto one it was Yamaha rider Shane Sewell that collected. James Povolny was in second, and not giving Sewell any chance to relax. Tony Kutzler was putting in a great run holding down third until midway through lap two when Yenerich pushed past. The top three held to the checkers, but a charge by local rider Mathew Maier pulled him into a fourth place finish in the final laps. The moto two holeshot money went to Maier as he powered his Motosports Factory KTM around the corner. Sewell got around

Ashley Densow grabbed third overall in the Women’s class.

Maier in the sand on the back side of the track and he then managed to put in a bit of breathing room on the pack. Maier held off challenges from Yenerich for a while but eventually Yenerich made his pass stick to take over second. Now Maier was facing a season long foe as Joseph Dretzka started looking for a weakness. The battle for third left the door open for California rider Dustin Pipes to join in until Pipes finally prevailed and passed both to take over third place. As Pipes came through the scoring area he had Povolny on his back tire and as they jumped the double in front of the start straight it was Povolny in third. Pipes started having a mechanical issue as his exhaust came loose, which gave the edge to Maier to slip into fourth on the final lap. Sewell took his third overall of the day once again going 1/1 while Yenerich (3/2) was second and Povolny (2/3) grabbed third. Later Maier commented, “I feel pretty good. I can probably count on two hands the times I have ridden, I had a bad concussion so I took the time off. I am going back to college and work full time and have become a part time motocrosser, but I decided to come out and have some fun. I knew there would be some top guys and I wanted to know where I stood. I just tried to get a good start and hit those secret, fast Azzie lines we all know.” Once again the Pro-Am was full of great racing in every class from 50’s on up to the Open A class. The show by the Pros demonstrated just how fast Aztalan can be ridden. Sims tops at the Mooch Greencastle, Indiana - Sept. 27 By David Dunnuck

T

he Mooch Motorcycle Club worked hard to create a nine mile course at the Sims property in Greencastle, Indiana. Fortunately, Greencastle avoided the week long drenching that the rest of Indiana experienced leading to the event. Unfortunately, the skies opened up the evening before the race leaving behind the dreaded greasy coating that makes for tense early laps. The PeeWee riders headed off the line with the pleasure of facing the slick woods prior to any other riders. The Pre-mix class turnout was low, but that had little impact on the excitement of the race. Langdon Feltner appeared to be easily on his way to another D15 Premix victory until Sam Hall decided to step it up and challenge the series point’s leader. With Hall right on his tail, Feltner came up on the injector leader late in the race. Jacob Stark, the injector leader, pushed hard in an attempt to keep the faster premix bikes from lapping him. Stark was successful for three laps, but the white flag was thrown and Feltner finally made the pass and landed the victory. Clay Sullivan, Matthew Hatchet and Larry Freund Eric Douglass after his first 85cc race.

headed into the Super Mini race all wanting that coveted victory. With a separation of less than twenty seconds between the three, Sullivan was leading Freund with Hatchett hanging tough in third for the first four laps. Somewhere on the fifth and final lap, Hatchett made his move and jumped from third to first dropping Sullivan into the second place. The 85cc class established their running order early in the first lap and remained virtually unchanged for all five laps. Luke Chilman cruised through the home check in the lead every lap with Alex Witkowski, Keagen Lee, Taylor Day and Zach Dubois rounding out the top five. Back in the pack was an 85cc new comer, Eric Douglass, a steady top three 65cc racer. He had decided to jump up and take his shot in the 85 ranks. While the class proved to be a bit more challenging, he had a great ride and enjoyed the race. In the 65cc class, Michael Witkowski picked up where he left off with a dominating victory and a ninth place overall finish. Vincent Smith had a smooth run to a solid second place finish. In the big bike race, we found seventy-three riders all fighting for the holeshot of their respective staring rows. Of those, fifteen riders eventually finished

all five laps. The scoring team did well, surviving 256 attempts to cover them with debris from the track. Tyler Tischler wasted no time in setting the pace on the first lap, turning an 11:12 time. Looking over his shoulder, he found Daniel Sims followed by

Logan Chilman, Derek Spangler, and Justin Childers. Somewhere on the course during the second lap, Sims took over the lead. Tischler filled the number two spot, but needed to close by 1:22 if there was any hope of taking back the lead. At the end of lap three, Sims still had the lead. TisSecond place 85cc class rider Alex Witkowski.

chler suffered a clutch failure allowing Chilman to move into second, as he dropped back. Third belonged to Derrik Allen who was behind by 3:39. Childers was having an incredible ride, running a strong fourth. Ryan Haney kept a cool head and staked a claim on the number five spot. Sims, still in the lead, decided to attempt a double jump in the motocross section in the final lap. He high-sided the landing resulting in a rush of crowd support trying to help get him. Sims was able to get rolling again while maintaining his lead on Chilman. Riding in third place, Allen was doing his best to hold off Childers. David McWilliams rode hard, staking claim to fifth overall from the second row. Larson lands Cambridge TT Cambridge, Minnesota - Sept. 13 By Tim McBride

#12L Nick Mataya won the Open Semi-Pro class.

F

ourth generation racer Will Larson from the “Larson’s Cycle” lineage, scored a hotly contested win in the ever popular Micro Mini class during the District 23 tourist trophy dirt track race held at the Norseman Club grounds in Cambridge, MN. The start of the Micro Mini main event saw Marcus Pinto grab the holeshot and lead the pack into the first turn with Nate Minster, Larson, Reece Valland, Josh Fedder and the rest of the eleven rider field in hot pursuit. By the end of the first lap however, Larson bolted into the lead and never looked back to land an exciting victory. Heat race winner Minster secured the second place spot, but never posed a threat to the fleeting Larson. Rounding out the top five positions were Fedder, Valland and Pinto. Micro Oil race winner Mason Grecula finished sixth. An altogether opposite age group soon came to the line in the form of the +50 class. Long time dirt tracker Dan Zitur scored the win ahead of another old-schooler Ron Bystrom. Bemidji, MN native Randy Thistle kept them honest by finishing a solid third. When later asked why he was riding his much older ‘97 CR250 Zitur replied “I still have the winter ice race jetting in my 450, so I broke out old faithful!” Josh Koch got the all important holeshot at the start of the 450 Semi Pro main and held off a hard charging Kevin Anderson and Nick Mataya for the win. Conner Anderson, Jacob Leclair and Tim Zemanovic rounded out the field. Later, in the Open Semi-Pro final, The 50cc riders putting on a good show.

Mataya turned the tables by grabbing the early lead and set a blistering pace that went on for twenty laps. Heat race winner Conner Anderson clipped a tire and almost crashed while running in second. His miscue allowed Koch and older brother Kevin to move into the second and third place spots, but by that time, Mataya had all but checked out. “I was flexing my hands on the straights to keep them from cramping up” explained the Go Moto / Repsol sponsored Mataya. “I have to especially thank Mom and Dad for giving me the opportunity race.” Koch had Mataya in his sights throughout but never posed a threat. “I thought I was gaining ground on the straightaway,” explained Koch afterward. “But I knew I would

never catch him.” When not racing, Mataya, a 12th grader at Blaine High School plays football and captains the Lacrosse team. Malaya’s father Marty enjoyed some success as well by topping the highly competitive Mad Dog class. Y

oung Dan Groth, from Amboy, Illinois, was the top rider at the Central Illinois M/C hill climb on September 5th, winning two classes and setting the overall Fast Time of the night. Riding a KTM380, Groth had to come from behind in the 450cc class, as he was back in fourth place at intermission, with Danny Schumann in the lead with a 3.383 second time. In the second half, Groth flew high over the top in a sizzling 2.876 seconds to take the class lead and set the Fast Time of the night. Cody Jenner and Matt Peters posted times of 3.090 and 3.139 seconds to slip into the second and third place spots. Groth topped the hill in 3.314 seconds in the 600cc Four Stroke class on his first round ride, and that held up for that class win. D17’s Hill Climb Director, Gordon Green, was his closest challenger with a very close 3.325 second time, with Chris Peters claiming third. Levi Peters, Joe McGurer, Andy Fortner and Jeff Ramey all enjoyed a double win evening. Levi took his wins in the 50cc and 65cc classes. Carrying the National number one plate in the 50cc class, young Peters came from behind to overtake Reece Hutton in the 50cc class, posting a 3.803 second time in the second round to slip under Hutton’s 4.152. Braden Young took third. In the 65cc class, Peters came from behind again, this time posting a 3.902 second time to overtake Andrew Fortner and his 4.362 second first round run. Tori Daniels claimed the third place trophy. Joe McGurer got his first win, and the Youth Fast Time award, in the 85Sr class with a 3.529 second time. Joshua Blazek claimed second. McGurer’s run took the Youth Fast Time award from Dakota Watson who had won the 85Jr class with a 3.566 second time. McGurer’s second win came in the 125cc class with a good 3.529 second time, with Dylan Brady second. Andy Fortner took his first win in the 750cc class on his screaming Kawasaki twostroke triple. His 2.930 second time was well ahead of runner-up Paul Hillard, who carded a 3.308 second time on his triple, with Bobby Senn finishing third. Fortner got his second win in the 400cc Stock class on his CR250. Mike Pulver was

Ramey were repeat double class winners, with Kyle Galloway also enjoying a double class win day. Young Peters is the 2009 National Champion in the 50cc class, and #4 in the 65cc class. He won both of those classes. Reece Hutton was his closest challenger in the 50cc class and Braden Young was third. Andrew Fortner was second in the 65cc class. McGurer was the repeat winner in the 85Sr and the 125cc classes. His 3.496 second time in the Junior Mini class was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. Kyle Galloway was the best stock length rider, winning both the 400cc and Open classes. His first round 2.859 second run on his KX250 was good for the 400 Stock win, with Mike Pulver second and Andy Fortner third. His first round ride would have won Open Stock also, but he beat it himself with an even quicker 2.903 second time in the second round. Pulver was second again, with Nick Daniels in third. Jeff Ramey repeated his Saturday night double wins in the Quad classes. He had to come from behind to win the 2-stroke class after crashing at 43 feet on his first ride. He kept all four wheels down on his second run to overtake Evan Zimmerman. In the four stroke Quad class, Ramey posted a 3.124 second time on his first ride, and watched that hold up for the win. Marty Thayer was close with a 3.215 second run with Jason Sosbe third. In other youth action, Clayton Hirsch took the 85Jr win with a 3.631 second time, with Leonard Bucholz IV in second. Lakota Ashworth repeated her Saturday win in the Women’s class with a 3.583 second time. Becky Lawson was second in 3.673 seconds with her Reece Hutton earned daughter Blair claiming third.

second. Ramey got his double wins in the Quad classes. His first round time of 3.183 seconds in the two stroke class was good for that win, with Evan Zimmerman and Paul Hillard following him. He turned a near identical time on his first ride in the Four-Stroke class, which also held up for the class win. Marty Thayer and Robert Fortner were second and third. The Sunday edition of the doubleheader found Jared McKay emerging as the fastest rider of the day. He had to come from well

three seconds for the weekend.

back in the pack in the 600cc class, as his first round time had him in tenth place at the break, with Josh Denson in the lead with a sizzling 2.445 second time. But he twisted the throttle tight on his KX540 and held it - flying over the top in 2.373 seconds to take the win, and the fast time of the day. Denson’s time held up for second place, with Cody Jenner running third. Levi Peters, Joe McGurer and Jeff

Three days of racing at LTM Casey, Illinois - September 5-7 By Kirt Monk

W

hen it comes to Labor Day weekend, Lincoln Trail Motosports is the place to be. Saturday was the grass track race, but the grass doesn’t last long. It starts out smooth and grass covered, then by the start of the motos it gets rough and loamy as the top soil gets whipped up. There was also a sand section. The race turned out to be one of the most fun races of the year. It gets bigger every time! Sunday and Monday the facility hosted both a motocross and hare scrambles race. That was followed up by another motocross on Monday. The great turnout enjoyed fantastic weather, and it was an excellent way to spend the long weekend. This year’s grass track proved to be better than ever with an extended track and perfect conditions. One rider to take advantage was Carter Gordon on his Suzuki, sweeping the 65Jr, 85Jr, and Mini 1 classes. In 85Jr and Mini 1 he had the challenge from Kawasaki rider Parker Smith who is just coming back from a broken wrist. Those two battled all day long with Carter getting the wins. On Sunday Gordon and Smith continued the battle. Gordon was running out front but getting pressure from the charging Smith in the second moto of 85Jr. Late in the moto Gordon went down handing the win and the overall to Smith. Gordon wasn’t going to make that same mistake and put the hammer down to sweep the Mini 1 for the day. Monday was another dominating day for Gordon as he swept four motos, giving him a total of thirteen wins in fourteen total motos. On Sunday, LTM ran a great Hare Scrambles race. The twenty plus riders on the front starting row included many top riders for the adult hare scrambles race. Although it poured all around the area, the track had just enough precipitation to make perfect racing conditions. Jeremy L. Smith pulled the holeshot followed by Zachary Nash and then factory GasGas rider Justin Williamson. Smith led through about half the first lap, then Nash took over and pulled for the next four laps. Williamson captured the lead when Nash fell while passing a lapped rider. Nash regained the lead in lap six and held on for the win with over a minute lead. Nash was followed by Jeremy L. Smith, Lee Lankutis, Jeremy A. Smith and Don Becktell as the top five. Nash liked the track, “it was fast with a good flow,” he said. There were a few technical sections with open sections for maximum speed. Nash said his KTM ran great and thanked Sparks & Son’s and Moose Racing 32

for their support. The morning race also saw great action as Colt Converse led most of the race with Blake Rinsch a close second. On the last lap, a bottleneck formed in the creek crossing section and Blake was able to get through to capture the 85cc class win. ike Lafferty entered the final round of the National Enduro Series six points behind his KTM teammate Russell Bobbitt. Lafferty, hoping to get his record setting ninth championship would need to win and hope Bobbitt finished third or worse. A lot of enduros are won or lost by seconds; so the pressure was really on for both riders to have a good ride. The weather at key time was cool, but the trail was nearly perfect following rain a few nights prior to the event. The route sheet showed nearly seventy miles, with sixty of that being single track trail. The start was at the picturesque covered bridge at Matthews. The first obstacle right off the start was the first of five river crossings. Bobbitt and Lafferty wasted no time getting through the first river crossing as Bobbitt left first on minute twenty one, splashing his way around a stalled rider. Then Lafferty left a minute later wheeling his way half way across the river. It was Bobbitt by a mere two seconds after the first six mile section. Lafferty took the lead after the second section by just three seconds. The final section of the day was the longest at nearly eleven miles, and Lafferty was able to extend his lead for the win, but Bobbitt held on to second place, just twenty-five seconds behind to win his third National Enduro Championship in the last four years. Lafferty’s next attempt at his ninth title to beat out the Dick Burleson record of eight will be aboard a Husaberg which was announced at the final round this year. Burleson rode a new KTM 150 at sixty years-old in the Senior A class; saying the 150 was a hoot to ride, and was hooking up real nice. Twenty eight time ISDE medal winner Jeff Fredette dominated the Sr. A class winning by ten minutes ahead of second place Clay Stuckey. Fredette finished twelfth overall, dropping just 46 points. He had no time to relax after the race as he was off to Portugal for his twenty ninth ISDE. Joshua Gaitten took the top overall “A” rider winning the Open “A” class. The top overall “B” rider was Leroy Shook winning the Vet class. Fifteen year-old Jesse Warner won the 250B class, just missing the overall B top spot by forty-five seconds. The family Enduro experience has really paid off for some the younger riders as it showed with Jesse’s score of 48 after ten checks. A special thanks to all of the land owners and The Muddobbers MC for putting on a great event. Another thanks goes to KTM for putting on the killer Demo ride with various 34

Fourth Annual Kike Ferrell Memorial Atwater, Wisconsin - Sept. 19 By Hannah Lange

T

he weekend weather worked out nicely for all the competitors looking forward to the annual Mike Ferrell Memorial. The evening started out with an enormous thank you to the sponsors from Innovative Technologies and Donna Ferrell. These sponsors donated the trophies for the night, along with hosting the huge purse for the Pro classes. A special Powder Puff race for the inexperienced ladies, the young and old alike, was impressive to watch as well. Mike Ferrell passed away in 2006 at the young age of 49 so his wife Donna has been sponsoring an annual race in Atwater ever since. Donna showed her appreciation at the riders meeting before the race. “This is my fourth year of sponsoring these races and a big thank you goes out to the Beaver Cycle Club. Also, please remember Bill Mischler Sr. (the club grounds are located in the backyard of Mr. Mischler) who passed away this year at 80 years of age.” “I like to sponsor the Mike Ferrell Memorial Race because Mike loved bikes and had a passion for competition. He was also about giving people an opportunity to race, so the best way to honor him is to give you racers the opportunity to come together for a day of racing. I hope you let your families know you appreciate their support. Good luck tonight.” In the Open Pro race, it was clean from start to finish with no yellow or red flags. Brock Schwarzenbacher and Nick Smith were fighting back and forth to hold their positions throughout the competition. The top three at the finish were Schwarzenbacher taking first, Smith second, and Cody Reifsnider rounding it off with a third place finish. Schwarzenbacher commented, “It was a good race and hats off to my competitors. It was a clean and respectable 36

race.” Smith stated, “He will be back again next year.” The 450 Pros were also racing for a paycheck in the fifteen lap main event. Smart riding kept the race clean and accident free. Brock Schwarzenbacher took the lead from the start with two bikes wide in some turns. At the midway point, Schwarzenbacher and Nick Smith were working thru lapped traffic. Schwarzenbacher took the checkered flag while doing an exciting wheelie at the finish line. Including DJ Slosser with a close third, all three top finishers thanked their sponsors, especially Donna Ferrell. Honorable mention goes out to Trey Johnson from Mt. Calvary, WI, who swept his three classes in the 250cc, 250 4Stroke, and the Open AM. No one could match his speed and determination that night. Alexia Hoffmann was the second spot holder in the 250cc class. Finale at Tigerton a Success Tigerton, Wisconsin - September 19 By Pete Emme

N

early 300 entries were on hand for the season finale at the MotoZone in Tigerton, WI. They also had an open practice the day before the race which drew over 150 riders, helping make for a very successful weekend. The track has seen many changes recently, in part to gather more riders of all skill levels. All of the changes were suggested and requested by the riders. None of them are all that dramatic, but the improvement to the "flow" of the track is very much improved. It is still technical, but very easy to overcome. There was also an Ironman race. The race was thought up by a few riders the day before and is something that some other tracks may consider in the future. The thirty-minute plus two lap moto drew over thirty riders from all skill levels. The purse was given out to the top three riders and was graciously added to by Interstate Sawing and Johnny G Motorsports. The purse was split by the winner Dustin Pulley, Sam Long and Joshua Brehm. In 250A action it was Wade Gilbert aboard a KTM getting the holeshot but he was quickly overtaken by Dustin Pulley on a Yamaha. Pulley walked away with the moto while there was a good battle between Dylan Ziolkowski and Nathen LaPorte for the third spot. Ziolkowski was working his way through the pack but just couldn’t get around LaPorte for third. Sam Long shot his KTM into the early lead in the second moto of 250A with Pulley close behind while Gilbert assumed third. Pulley made the pass for the lead over Long shortly into the moto. Pulley pulled back to back moto wins while Long rode to consistent moto finishes of 2-2 for second. Taking third overall was LaPorte. In 250B action, it was Zach Coons in his first time trip to Tigerton taking the lead as CJ Greaves got pushed way wide in the first corner, sending him to the back of the pack. Coons looked strong in the opening laps. Marshall Maas and Justis Heckendorf moved in behind while Greaves was working hard to catch up, sliding into seventh by the end of the first lap. Coons was hitting the triple-triple in the sand section, stretching his lead out to more than seven seconds over the twenty rider field. Maas ended up on the ground after the double in the infield forfeiting his second place ride to Heckendorf. Greaves got around Heckendorf for second, but Coons was gone as the checkers came out for the Yamaha rider. “I got a good start as we were all even down the start straight. I got a good drive

CJ Greaves won six motos on the day.

through there and into the lead,” Coons said. The second moto had Coons and Heckendorf battled it out for the lead while Greaves took advantage and moved into the second spot as Coons got the upper hand going towards the plateau. Coons stayed on the gas and ahead of the pack taking a big win in the second moto and going 1-1. Greaves took home solid seconds while Heckendorf rode to consistent 3’s for third overall. In Open C it was the Yamaha of Zack Masch completely dominating the class in certain fashion. Masch was patient and made his move early on to go 1-1 in the class, he

took home top honors in 250C as well. Open A had Sam Long out to the lead and looking fine aboard that KTM but once again Dustin Pulley worked his way into the lead, something that is common from the Indiana native. Pulley stayed in the lead but had to eat some roost by the 450s early on. “There were a lot of 450’s in there and I did all I could to jockey for position on my 250, and then I got by Sam and rode a couple of good hard laps,” said Pulley. Pulley garnished the lead early on in the second moto with Long in second and that’s how it would stay. CYCLE USA, November 2009

Zach Coons (143) and Cody Ciszewski (97) battling it out in the 250B start.

In Open B it was Zach Coons into the early lead but he had some mechanical failure on his front brake as he went down in a corner, handing the lead over to Cody Ciszewski and CJ Greaves. Coons had to pull off due to the locking brake. Greaves, “I got a decent start and by the time I came up into the sand whoops I was fighting for second and then I saw Coons go down and I moved into the lead and got the win.” The second moto had Greaves going wide in the first corner, but still holding onto the lead while Coons rode off the track calling it a day. Greaves had nothing but track in front of him as he walked away to another

win. Greaves won in the 125Jr class aboard a Super Mini and also went 1-1 in the Sportsmen B/C division. A fantastic day for the young rider as he cashed in on some healthy Kawasaki contingency. There were numerous sponsors and contingencies available on race day that included Kawasaki, Scott USA, Dunlop, Acerbis, PMP Sprockets, Hinson Clutches, Max-Power RPM's, Braking, Sunstar, EVS, Ride Engineering, Twin Air, RK Excel, Janssen Motorsports and Vitamin Water have all come together to make this a lucrative event. New layout for Hangtime Akron, Indiana - September 19 By Becky Stichter

R

acers coming to Hangtime this weekend got to ride on a track with a new layout. The direction was reversed, a six-pack downhill stagger, uphill doubles, downhill doubles, and an uphill step-up were added. Some of the riders looked a little uncomfortable with the changes in the morning series, but by evening they were more relaxed and raced well. One rider that didn't seem to mind the changes Saturday morning was Dalton Packard. He rode well all day. In the morning he took charge of the Supermini class going 1-1. In the first moto he came out of the gates fast and strong to take the lead. He was charging through the downhill stagger and doubles with confidence. Only seconds behind was Morgan Strode. Strode threatened to take the lead

a few times, but Packard held him off. In the second moto Packard had a larger lead, but knew Strode was not far behind. Another good race in the morning was between Colton Crum and Chandler Pitts of the 65 (7-9) class. They were neck in neck out of the gates. Crum pulled out a slight lead, but then fell in a turn. Pitts was right there to take the lead, and then hold it for almost two laps before falling in the same corner. Crum grabbed the lead and took the win. In the second moto Crum came out with the lead again and didn't have any problems this time. He kept the lead the entire moto and took first overall. Saturday evening had even more great racing. The action started with the Quad B class. In the first moto Landon Glass took the early lead and was comfortably ahead of Adam Barth and Sonny Nemitz, battling for second. Nemitz was able to stay

Scott Swinford on his YZ125.

ahead of Barth until the last lap. Barth finished hard and took second. In the second moto Glass was the leader again, going 1-1 for the overall win. Behind him was where the fight was. Adam Barth and Cameron Barth got tangled up coming out of the first turn. The other riders were nearly a lap ahead before they were off and riding again. Nemitz took advantage of that and was able to secure a second place finish. There were only three riders in the 125cc 2-stroke class, but these guys are at the track nearly every weekend, riding as hard as they can. In the first moto Scott Swinford blasted out of the gates first. Behind him were Quinton Camp and Derek Landry. Swinford held the lead until the final lap where he was passed by Camp. In the second moto Landry shot out first with the other two hot on his trail. Camp got around him and owned the race, placing him first overall. Five riders raced in the 250C class. Justin Brumfield went 1-1, but had to work for it. In the first moto Daren Ransbottom was out of the gates with the lead, but his bike stalled and Brumfield and Ryan Drake were there to move ahead. Brumfield

was the one to take the lead and win that moto, with Drake finishing second and Ransbottom third. In the second moto Brumfield rode hard, taking the lead and the win. In the Open B class Connor Cowles jetted out of the gates going 1-1. Behind him were Braxton Grose and Matthew Sands. Grose worked hard in the first moto to finish second. In the second moto Grose was not able to get ahead of Sands. Sands stepped it up and rode in the second position that moto, for the second overall finish. In the Mini Quad class one rider caught my attention. Abby Bowyer attacked the track in a way that I haven't seen in awhile. Earlier in the season her machine wasn't running right. Tonight everything seemed to be working fine and she had her Cobra humming. She was the only mini quad rider that was doing a double in the downhill six pack. She had an excellent run going 2-2, finishing behind Blake Sarver. After the race she made the comment that she thought Sarver was taking it easy. I don't know about that. She ran hard and looked good. Her quad finally cooperated and let her show us how she can ride!

Clark tops two at Winterset Winterset, Iowa - Sept. 13 By Mark Bonnell Photos by Missi Thede

A

s the 2009 Iowa motocross season nears its end, it seems like a lot of racers are doing their best to visit all of the D22 Motocross facilities at least one more time. Coupling that with the fact the today’s race was a rare bike only event, it makes the good turn-out of riders even more impressive. Two of the largest classes of the day were the 250C and the Open C classes. Even though some of the riders were in both classes, the races had several differences including lap times and track conditions. One thing that was the same in both was the fact that Michael Clark put his YZ250 two stroke out front by the end of each moto and never looked back. Be sure to look for Clark in the B class at a track near you in the near future. In the first 250C moto Andrew Harter smoothly transiJordan Lytton riding to second overall in the Open C class.

tioned from the wet grassy starting area to the loamy track, and instantly began pulling away from the field. Dillion Delong was the next rider to clear the tricky first table top followed closely by Trevor Newton, Clark and Hanna Mathis. The rest of the field was left playing catch up as the group of leaders slowly pulled away. At the end of the first lap Harter had a three second lead. Clark had worked up to second place, Mathis, Aaron Sparks and Alec Ecleuarria were not far behind. As the leaders entered the new whoop section, Delong found himself suddenly on the ground. Later on the same lap, Ecleuarria had a similar experience in the new, Loretta’s inspired off-camber section. The difference, he was able to get up and get going again in just a couple of seconds. Near the end of the lap, Sparks moved past Mathis for third. At the beginning of the final lap, Clark made his move in the final rhythm section by staying

closer to the ground and keeping his bike pinned the entire way. It worked, allowing Clark to take the moto win ahead of Harter. Sparks beat out Mathis for third. Ecleurria crossed the line in fifth. As moto two got underway, Clark got a solid start, worked his way into the lead and then gapped the rest of the field by the end of the lap. Newton was also got a good start and wasn’t too far behind Clark. Harter and Mathis, once again had a race of their own within the race. At the end of the moto it was Clark with a convincing win, as Newton finished a solid second. Harter, Mathis and Sparks rounded out the top five. Clark’s 1-1 earned him the win ahead of Harter’s 23 finishes. Hanna Mathis finished the day with a solid 4-4 score for third. The Open C class also had some unusual scores. Clark ran away and hid from the field in both motos giving him the win. Jordan Lytton finished the class in second overall with a 4-3 score. Matt Swanberg ended up fourth with a 6-2 finish. Newton had another wild 6-2 score for fourth overall. Dakota Anderson went 5-5 for fifth place. Perfect weather... finally Taylorville, Illinois October 10 By James Pinckard

ill Race for Food” is what the riders could have been saying this day. The Southfork crew fed everyone at the track for free. Leroy stated “We just want to try to do something each race to help the racers and families, so today we are going to feed everyone.” Aside from the food, the weather was a perfect and the track was in great shape making for great racing. With their stomach full, the 65Jr class was ready to go. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Carter Gordon flew to the moto win with Noah Watts second and Ezra Lusk third. In the second moto Carter “Flash” Gordon again put on a great ride for the moto and overall wins. Second in the moto went to Suzuki rider Jacob Lancaster, which was a great comeback after a DNF in the first moto. Noah Watts has been charging all year and each race looks stronger and more aggressive on the bike, and today took third for the moto and second overall. Third overall went to Ezra Schaal with a fourth place moto finish. Ezra is a mem“

ber of a racing family and in fact his uncle Paul won the Quad B class on the other track. The name Trowbridge has been around motocross for years. In fact on this day Randy Trowbridge took second overall in +50 class. Always on Suzuki’s, another Trowbridge, Kelby was also reeking havoc on the track. In +30B Kelby has been riding great all year and they say every dog has his day and today Kelby was barking, taking both motos and the overall wins. Kelby stated, “I just felt great, and in fact they started the A class in front of us and I was trying to catch them so I charged every lap both motos.” Second both motos and overall was Honda rider Terry Winterbauer. Yamaha rider Donnie Hensen finished third each moto.

Jersey Jake takes Springfield Mile Illinois State fairgrounds Springfield, Illinois - September 6 By Gordon Lunde

Jake Johnson celebrates his first Springfield Mile victory.

J

ake Johnson emerged from a five rider pack to claim the Labor Day 2009 edition of the Springfield Mile. Riding the SuperTrapp/ F&S Harley-Davidson XR750, Johnson beat Jared Mees by a slim margin of .049 seconds to win his first Springfield Mile victory. The event itself came with much ado as Saturday night rains soaked the track which was totally unrideable on Sunday morning. Crews responsible for prepping the surface were not able to get on the track until late in the day. The rains had already postponed the short track event until Monday and IMDA officials were anxious to get the mile underway and completed this day. Once able to get on the course that was a muddy mess earlier, the IMDA group put every available vehicle on the track to dry it out. Once dried, with storms threatening in the area, the program was shortened, but still the race was run under darkened skies. The program was shortened to three heat races, no semis or LCQ for the final. Six riders from each heat would advance along with Shaun Russell who used a provisional start to complete the nineteen rider field for the final. The heat races proved problematic with red flags thrown due to crashes in heats two and three. Sammy Halbert claimed pole position by winning heat one, the only heat not plagued by crashes. Willie McCoy mastered

Springfield Dash winner Sammy Halbert.

heat two and Jared Mees sped to the win in heat number three. One rider not qualifying was Kenny Coolbeth, the points leader and current series champion. Coolbeth had crashed during a practice ride on a motocross track earlier in the week and broke his shoulder. Kenny tried to ride, but wasn’t able to put in a time fast enough to make the main. The twenty-five lap final got off with lightning in the skies and rain threatening, but the storm was on the track. A five rider pack consisting of Mees out front, Joe Kopp, Sammy Halbert, Johnson and J.R. Schnabel led the way early in the race. Kopp, who was having handling problems in turns one and two, dropped from the pack. Wrenching his knee during one episode didn’t help matters. Mees opened up a small gap and looked strong, but worried about the draft that the Springfield Mile is so famous for. Bryan Smith, from his fourth row starting position, and the rest of the pack behind Mees caught the leader and made a move out front on lap

ten. Johnson made his move to the front on the next lap and managed to pull a gap on the field. With a bit of a lead, Johnson looked to have the race in hand, but Mees aboard the Blue Springs XR750 had other plans. Johnson was surprised to see Mees fly by him on the back straight into turn three during the final lap. Johnson knew he needed every trick in the book to get by Mees in the last two corners and actually took a line so tight in turn three he made contact with the guard rail and rubbed skin off his left hand. Mees pushed a little too hard trying to maintain the lead and lit up the rear tire coming off turn four. That was enough to ruin his drive off the corner and let Johnson past for the run to the checkers. Halbert hung on for the final podium spot about a second back. Bryan Smith came up just short of third about three tenths of a second behind Halbert. Kopp managed to salvage fifth through his troubles some seven seconds behind Halbert.
