CYCLE USA, November 2010

he 10th Annual Big Woods 200 lived up to its reputation as one of the premier dual sport rides in the midwest again this year. With riders from across the country turning out for the fun it is surely becoming an even more sought after event in the future. Riders from Florida, Washington as well as Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Minnesota were in attendance. The recent heavy rains in the area were looking to provide a very muddy mess and trouble for riders, but few had real problems. The water was deep in many areas, but the sandy soil in most places seemed to soak it up pretty well. The fairgrounds which is used as headquarters for the event was a different story as many people, your truly included, got stuck in deep mud trying to get trailers and RVs parked for the weekend. A huge turnout again kept the club, the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders, busy as usual. The rains had members out changing routes and trails to avoid the really serious water and mud. The goal for the club is to provide a good, challenging ride for the masses, but leave the real rough stuff for the “Hero section” riders. Club members did a great job of it and everyone enjoyed the two days of riding in the Wabeno, Wisconsin area. This ride raises money for the club to continue their activities, but also lets WDSR help the local community. Each year a different entity is chosen and this year a donation of $1,000 was made to the Wabeno area library.

For many, this one event is a must go to, and for good reason. The riding is great, the organization of the event is fantastic, and the camaraderie found among everyone, including the local residents is addicting. The event does have an attendance cap, one it is reaching over and over again. The Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders would like to thank their sponsors for this event and their continuing support for motorcycle riding and riders: Action Power Sports, Advanced Land Speed, Anschutz Motorsports, Badger Cycle, Baja Designs, BMW Motorcycles of Milwaukee, BMW of North America, Cedar Creek Motorsports, Country Sports, Cycle USA, D&L Signs, Dave’s Small Engine Service, Don & Roy’s, Enduro Engineering, EVS, Geoffrey Cook Studios, Keytime Motorsports, Kline Motorsports, Luloff’s True

Donaldson tops at Kato Hill Drags Mankato, Minnesota - August 28 By Mike Nelson

E

ric Donaldson pulled off the Cinderella win to take the Top Eliminator and the lion’s share of the $5,000 total prize money put up by the Kato Cycle Club for their Hill Drag class top finishers and Top Eliminator. The day started out with four classes of competition lined up in double elimination brackets of head to head competition. The top finishers from each class advanced into a single elimination bracket for the Top Eliminator. As riders worked their way through the double elimination brackets, local favorite and current 600cc Champion Marcus Winch worked his way to the top of both the 600cc and 250cc classes for the day’s competition. Another area rider Jared Gitter also found his way to the top spot in the 450cc class ahead of Eric Wheelwright who also finished second behind winch in the 250cc class. Gitter also finished second in the 600cc class in a close battle handing Winch his first loss, but ultimately losing out when they switched lanes for their final face off. Brent Stevenson rounded out the class winners taking the Open class ahead of Gitter who had taken the opportunity to try out Jay Sallstrom’s tricked out Open class Honda while Jay was out of town. Some riders that made it deep into the competition, but fell short included Logan Cipala in the 250cc and 450cc classes along with Steve Wood in the Open and 600cc classes and his daughter Casey in the 250cc class. Club member Cory Danberry also rode deep into the day on his 600cc ride. With just four guys accounting for all

eight top spots some space opened up for some number three and four seeds to make the top eliminator bracket. When it all got sorted out, Marcus Winch and Jared Gitter chose to run their 600s, and Eric Wheelwright chose his 450. With Brent Stevenson taking his spot in the Open class, all this made room for Logan Cipala and Casey Wood to get in on their 250s along with Eric Donaldson on his 450 and Mitch Koester riding his 750 in the

Open class. In the quarterfinals Cipala knocked out Wheelwright, Donaldson beat Woods, Winch edged out Koester, and Stevenson sent Gitter to the house. In the semis it was Donaldson over Cipala and Stevenson taking down Winch to set up the finals with the top Open rider of the day against the number four rider of the 450cc class. After a short break to let the bikes cool down the riders pulled into the stage with Donaldson in the left lane and Stevenson in the generally preferred right lane. With a ready nod from each rider the referee hit the lights and for the first time in two years, the top eliminator wasn’t decided by a red light. Donaldson got out of the hole quicker on his 450 and opened up a lead on the lower part of the hill with his smaller quicker bike, but Stevenson charged back hard closing the gap on the upper part of the hill. When they broke the finish lights at the top Donaldson had managed to hold off the late charge and take the win, the big prize money, and bragging rights until next year. Ice Racing Swap Meet helps kick off expanded Ice Racing effort in Northern Indiana. Talk to any veteran racer and they will tell you that ice racing is one of the best types of practice for almost all types of summer racing. Throttle control, endurance and corner sliding are all part of the ice race experience. Hare scramblers, mx'ers, road racers, and dirt trackers all benefit from studding up and riding on the lakes. For the 2011 season, our newly formed club, Moto On Ice will be hosting a full schedule of ice endurance and short track races on Cedar Lake, in northeast Indiana. Starting January 2nd each Sunday both motorcycles and 4-wheelers will compete on one of the best laid out GP ice courses. A combined short track program will ensure plenty of track time. To kick off the season the club is hosting a motorcycle/ATV swap Meet Sunday, November 28th. It's your chance to clean out the garage, or fill it, depending on what you are looking for. Vendor space is FREE, and all riding enthusiasts are encouraged to come and sell what you have, or buy what you need. From the back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman The last two months have been a couple of the busiest I have had in years. There are almost too many things happening at one time. District 23 was well represented at AMA congress with all five Congress people in attendance. Al Mathwig was on the off road committee, Dale Broughton was on the MX committee, Tom Umpress was Road and Recreation committee, John Sullivan Road Riding committee and Mike Quinn on ATV. It was a fairly mild congress this year with a few changes coming at us, but nothing really big. We will relate all of the changes once the AMA Board On The Cover: North Liberty, IA’s Casey Beaver at the October 2nd Cedar Rapids, IA race. Photo by Missi Thede

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... of Directors has approved them. Our awards Banquet will be held December 4th at Hinckley Grand Casino. The annual business meeting and sanction meeting will take place on November 20th Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bloomington. We should have the schedule for 2011 finalized by the business meeting. This is also the time that we elect officers for the upcoming 2011 season. You will all be getting a flyer in the mail with times, date, place and all the proposed rules changes. I would like to give a special thanks and recognition to Chip Donaho for his thirty plus years of service to ARMCA D23. He will not be serving on the board for the first time in decades starting with the 2011 season. We can’t thank him enough for the countless hours and the dedication he has put into our sport and he will be missed. I was absolutely astounded to see so many of our members and racers at the Motocross of Nations this year in Colorado. For me the weekend started on Friday afternoon with the first Annual Motocross Safety Summit. It was a great meeting, and we heard from experts on many topics including concussions. The focus on concussions nationally is intense and more than one state has already passed legislation banning players from returning to play after suffering a concussion, for varying periods of time. I learned a lot about concussions that will be relayed in the coming months. Some of the ideas presented included specially trained moto medics, new ideas on helmet technology, track and jump design just to name a few. It will be very interesting to see where all of this leads in the next couple of years. The race itself was incredible. If you have never attended a Motocross of Nations, you need to make plans to attend one. It is the most unique and special race in all of motocross. Racers from 32 countries and 6 continents vying for space on the start line so they can represent their country. The spectators from Europe are really into this race, and were dressing up for the occasion. The multitude of costumes and flags is a sight to behold. I was lucky enough to spend time with a group of spectators over from Ireland and England. I learned a lot from them, and we had a great time. The racing itself was great, the quali-

fying duel between Ken Roczen and Trey Canard went down to the last couple of corners before the finish. Cairioli had something for the rest of the field in Saturday qualifying, he was good, fast and smooth. It was obvious from Saturday qualifiers that this was not going to be a walk in the park for the American team of Ryan Dungey, Andrew Short and Trey Canard. Speaking of great teams, this trio may not be the most talented or fasted team the US has ever fielded but I really believe it was without a doubt three of the nicest, and most deserving racers we have ever had on the same team. It is icing on the cake that they brought home the win. I doubt you will find better role models for your kids than these three professional athletes. What an example, coming from behind after being on the ground, never say die, no retaliation just hard work and

using every bit a talent God gave them to get the job done. The MX of Nations is a true international event, that determines a true world Championship team what more could a fan ask for. We also just completed training seven new off road motorcycle instructors this past week. This was done to hopefully provide a venue and opportunity for new riders to learn to ride, and get new people interested in the sport. We are actively seeking new members as we feel we have one of the best family sports there is. That is about it for this last month, again be sure to get out and vote, I hope to see you all at the upcoming awards banquet. Mike

he ¾ inch of rain the day before the sixteenth D15 Hare Scramble event was welcomed by all involved. The Plymouth Blackhawks sandy conditions will typically soak up the rain which makes for great berms and low dust. In both of the previous races hosted by the Plymouth Blackhawks MC, Mike Witkowski put on a dominating show by winning the overall mini victories from the second row of 85cc riders. SuperMini rider Luke Chilman was determined to prevent that from happening in a third straight Plymouth race. Chilman looked flawless and fast throughout the entire race, riding out front by himself. Witkowski, determined to claim another overall victory in the sand, was challenged early on, but soon pulled away and started picking through the Super Mini riders. As it turned out, Witkowski was able to turn the fastest lap

time of the race followed close by Keagen Lee and Chilman. Witkowski never physically caught Chilman, but the adjusted time showed Witkowski with yet another overall victory. Vincent Smith proved too much for the 65cc field and maintained his perfect, undefeated D15 season. Kayden Young cruised to second with his close rival, Dawson Dunnuck, riding up in the 85cc class. Eighty-nine big bikes lined the five starting rows in hopes of claiming a late season victory. The front row was packed full of all A riders looking for the coveted holeshot. Daniel Sims jumped out in front as he has in so many races this year. Unfortunately, Sims failed to maneuver around an embedded rock near the end of the second grass section and found himself flying over the handlebars. The remaining riders all fell into a single file line in the tight woods, all hoping for that chance to better their position. At the end of the first lap, things had settled and Nathan Sullivan led the pack followed immediately by Alex Witkowski, Jordan Johns, Steven Squire and Sr A rider Paul Guy. The crowd was buzzing with chatter considering this was Alex Witkowski’s debut in the A class ranks. Witkowski, who just last year was racing in the minis, had self advanced from Light B into the Light A class at this event. The course layout and length resulted with the leaders turning approximately 22:30 lap times. At the end on lap two, the half way mark, the only change in the running order was Daniel Sims entering in the number five spot after recovering from his big spill off the start. At the white flag, Witkowski was still hanging strong in second with Squire moving ahead of Johns, into third. The checkered flag was given at the end of Sullivan’s fourth lap with Witkowski following by only 1:09. Back in the Heavy B ranks, Matt Hatchett experienced his best ride all year landing him on the top podium spot, just ahead of the ever impressive Taylor Day. The PeeWee class participation was quite low for this event, but that didn’t prevent intense racing. Louden Feltner and Logan White battled back and forth the entire race with White edging out Feltner for the final victory of the day.

he Barone Spinal Care Nuclear Series came to a close as the final rounds took place at Motosports Park over Labor Day weekend. Rider attendance was near 300 as the championship titles came down to the wire, some classes staging only a few points difference between first and second place. MSP held the Club 57 MX Schools Round One rain date on Saturday in order to ensure that all ten rounds were accounted for in the series. Sunday brought on the tenth and final round of the series, this time presented by Open Air Powersports. Sunday’s track conditions shaped up to be a little intense with the wide spectrum of riders taking the course. The track was pretty muddy throughout practice, making it a little difficult to motor through the back section of the track. However, by the time first motos took off, the track dried up and quickly formed the deep hard ruts and breaking bumps that MSP is known for. Alexander Nagy of Richmond, Illinois had an impressive weekend sweeping all four

10

CYCLE USA, November 2010

motos in the Super Mini and 85Sr classes. Sunday in the 85Sr class, Nagy shot off to the holeshot in moto one with Jason Mack of Genoa City, Wisconsin and Nick Wallace or Rockford, Illinois hot on his tail at first. Wallace, having just moved up to the 85Sr class after Loretta’s, made an impressive charge on Mack throughout the entire race, finally making the pass in the corner before the finish. Wallace railed the outside line and carried his momentum to the inside of the next corner; meanwhile Mack forked his front end trying to avoid clipping the rear tire of Wallace and went down. Wallace went on to finish second behind Nagy and Mack got up to salvage a third. Moto two produced the same holeshot as Nagy got out front quickly and never looked back. Mack and Wallace were right there again in moto two battling back and forth for the second spot. Wallace got around Mack on the first lap but the next time around Mack got him back. Wallace made a tough effort to get by Mack but couldn’t make it happen, giving Mack the second overall behind Nagy, leaving Wallace with a hard fought third and Mackiewicz going 6-4 for the fourth overall. Jimmy Epi-

fanio rode a consistent 5-5 for the fifth place overall. In the +40 class Roy Nafzger grabbed the holeshot over Scott Rhoton of McHenry, Illinois. Rhoton kept the pressure on Nafzger for the first part of the moto until something happened in the back section and Rhoton went down, putting the Club 57 Kawasaki of Chris Lazaretto in the second spot. Lazzaretto gave Nafzger a run for his money but the rough track got the best of him as well, as he went down in the back section giving Nafzger some breathing room for the rest of the moto. Mark Marescalco of Burlington, Wisconsin stepped up to the second spot with Michael Westbrook and Paul Marescalco close behind. Moto two of +40 saw Nafzger off to the holeshot once again, with Mark Marescalco right with him. After finishing with an eighth in the previous moto, Tim Filips put all the sections together to move his way into the second spot past Marescalco. Moto two brought Rhoton a little better luck as he grabbed a fourth, giving him 6-4

for the fifth overall. Mark Marescalco finished out with a strong 2-3 for the second overall in front of Westbrook who went 3-5 for the third overall. Tim Filips got lucky with an 8-2 for the fourth overall. The 125cc 2-stroke class had Kyle Nelson of Poplar Grove, Illinois get off to a great start aboard his Suzuki with Rocki Williams of Streator, Illinois close behind. Nelson and Williams battled back and forth for the first couple of laps until Nelson kicked it into high gear and pulled away. Jake Peterson settled into the third spot with Nick Broll and Nick Lorenz battling for the fourth and fifth spots. Nelson grabbed the holeshot in moto two as well, with Williams, Peterson and Broll close behind. Nelson put his head down and did work on the rough and rutted track, riding his way to a moto victory as well as the overall. Williams took the second overall with a 2-2 and Peterson went 3-3 for the third spot. Broll took fourth overall and Lorenz rounded out the top five. After a long weekend of

racing, Motosports Park crew hosted the annual banquet to give out series awards and enjoy the live band and fun atmosphere. In a ten race series, a lot of hard work and determination is involved for one to win a championship. The biggest award of the night went to Michigan’s Nick Vaughn in the form of $3,000 for winning the combined points total for the entire series. Other big winners of the night included Jason Kloptowski, Scott Zont, Dan Sanders and JR Garrett, all taking home their share of the $10,000 purse. For some riders, winning just one championship wasn’t enough; they had to grab the title in two different classes. Brandon Pope showed that hard work and persistence pays off by taking home the championship in both Open B and 250B, both of which are difficult classes with the soon-to-be A riders challenging one another. Pope walked off with a free trip to Millsaps Training Facility. We look foreword to seeing how Brandon makes the transition to A next season with a little help from MTF.

Old and young riders alike share the drive and competitiveness to win as shown by Youngster Thomas Bayliff of Libertyville, Illinois who

clenched two separate championships in the 50Jr as well as 50 Automatic. Similarly, Roy Nafzger captured the title in both +40 and +45, beating out some

tough competition that also share Nafzger’s years of experience on the Motosports Park track. Alexander Nagy made a habit of being on top as he took home an

85Sr championship along with a Super Mini title as well. Point totals were very close coming into the last rounds of the Barone Spinal Care Nuclear Series, and it wouldn’t make sense to leave out title sponsor Jeremy Barone of Algonquin, Illinois who fought hard until the end of the series, enduring an end-of-the season hospital visit after crashing hard on Saturday. Barone hardly missed the championship in +30 and Open C, finishing an impressive second in both, as well as taking home a fourth in 250C after some bad luck. Another impressive season came from Rockford, Illinois rider Connor Robinson who took home the Open C championship in front of Barone as well as a second place in 250C. We may look for Robinson in the B class by next season. Aaron Vincer, Motosports Park Promoter was happy with the season, and already looking forward to next year. “The Nuclear Series will be back better and stronger in 2011. We have lots of projects in the works. We have broken ground on new RV parking with power and water hookups. When it's done, it is going to be a very nice neighborhood! We have some plans in store for the Hilltop track as well. Every year we try and make the facility and program better. We are all lucky to have some of the best facilities in the country right here in the Midwest. Our goal at Motosports Park is to try and be one of them.” Congratulations to all the Nuclear Series Champions, as well as all the other riders who endured the long season of racing! Camerer grabbed his first title in the always large and fast 600cc class. Riding his CR500, he flew high over the top in a blazing 3.926 seconds on his first ride to take the class lead and set the fast time to that point of the night. No one in the class could match that time, with Cody Jenner and Fortner taking second a third. Fortner would bring his Honda back later and take the fast time of the night on his Senior class ride. Riding a stock length Suzuki, Camerer came from behind for his second win in the 400cc Stock class. His first run had him in fourth place behind Mike Pulver, Sheldon Truelove and Andy Fortner. Camerer nailed a very quick 3.126 time on his second ride to take the win while Pulver dropped to second and Fortner moved into third. The Garriott family had another good

he King City Dirt Riders held a hill climb doubleheader on September 18 and 19, the Saturday night event being the 2010 Indiana State Championships race. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner emerged as the fastest of the evening, while Joe McGurer, Jake Tackitt, and Troy Camerer claimed two titles each. Fortner’s fast time came in the Senior (+40) class with a 2.918 second run on his first ride, good for not only the class win, but also the Fast Time Award. Jon Creek was second with a 3.088 second time and Mike Pulver third. McGurer’s first win came in the 125cc class, where his first round 3.460 second time on his KX125 held up for the class win. Blair Lawson topped the hill in 3.732 seconds on her Yamaha for second place Troy Camerer with Lucas Learnard with his two awards. third. McGurer rode his 450cc Honda thumper to the win in the Open Stock class, his 3.212 second run in the first run going unmatched. His 3.292 second round on his second round was actually second fastest, with veteran Mike Pulver taking second on his Honda in 3.304 seconds with Greg Joy third. Tackitt’s first win came in the 200cc class on his vintage KDX200. His 3.351 second first round time took the class lead into intermission, but Chris Senn slipped under that on his KTM200 with a 3.349 time in the second half. Tackitt was good for the challenge however, carding a 3.250 second time for the win. Kyle Galloway claimed third on his Kawasaki. Tackitt’s second win came in the Open class with a good 3.185 second time on his Harley in the first round. Brian Klett was second in 3.491 seconds on his Honda with Damon Mayo third.

evening, with Ryan taking the title in the 2 Stroke Quad class with Wade second. Cline Garriott took second place in the 50cc class behind Levi Peters, while brothers Clint and Cole took the wins in the 65cc and 85Jr classes. Cole’s 4.323 second time in the Junior class was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. Tonnie Pauley Jr was the 85Sr class winner. On Sunday, Jon Creek proved yet again that older isn’t necessarily slower, as the 42 year old rider claimed the Fast Time of the Day award. Levi Peters was the only double class winner. Creek rides with Fortner in both the 600cc class and Senior classes, and the two good friends. Fortner set the first round fast time at 2.912 seconds in the 600cc class, and took that class lead into intermission, with Creek mired in 12th place. In the second round Creek delivered a perfect high flying ride and sailed over the top in 2.813 seconds to take the win and set a new fast time. Fortner’s time was also beat by Bobby Senn who claimed second in 2.841 seconds with Troy Camerer third. Fortner dropped all the way to fifth as Cody Jenner also slipped under his first round time. Senn’s time proved to be second fastest of the day w i t h Camerer ’s third fastest. Creek and Fortner squared off again in the Senior (+40) class, with Fortner nailing a sizzling 2.954 second on his first ride to take the first round lead, with Creek in third place in 3.126 second and Mile Pulver in between them. Malatia tops Megacross Finale Mendota, Illinois- September 26 By Jennifer Kenyon Photos by Brett Wilkinson

he 2010 Megacross series consistently encountered some of the worst weather conditions in the history of the series. Not because there was a tornado or massive

volcano erupting over the track, but because it rained nearly every weekend that Megacross was scheduled to race from April to September. The Megacross crew did a tremendous job all year to make sure that the track was in mint condition after Mother Nature let us have it all week long. That is, until the last scheduled round when there just wasn’t enough time and equipment to adequately rid the track of the mud and slime that followed the rain. So, consequently, the last round of the series was postponed until the following weekend, September 26th. Saturday brought a steady rainfall throughout the day, just enough to moisten the dirt on the track. The track was in great shape for practice and first motos. However, as the night went on, the temperature dropped drastically and the rainfall continued, leaving slick track for the freezing riders. As the Open A class took the track, the professionals found themselves struggling

just as much as the smaller riders with the slick corners and slippery faces. Maxx Malatia had no problem putting his Kawasaki out front as he did in both of his heat races earlier in the night. Justin Kelly and Kevin Markwardt were hot on Malatia as they all tried to stay on two wheels. Kelly and Markwardt were going back and forth for the first few laps and Markwardt finally skimmed by Kelly on the straight. As Markwardt approached a double, he slid up the face and lost control of the bike, slamming himself to the ground and allowing Kelly, Kyle White and Jonathan Six around. Markwardt quickly got up and maintained the fifth place position working his way toward Six in the last couple of laps. Malatia checked out on the rest of the pack, riding a very solid moto. Kelly took a smooth second in front of White and Six. After the first set of motos the track crew made the decision to work on the track by tilling up some of the corners in order to allow the dry dirt to mix in with the wet. This allowed riders to get around the track more safely than before, even though conditions were still slippery. The Women’s class was one of the most exciting of the night with much action happening within the top three ladies. Kim Chandler shot out to the holeshot aboard her Kawasaki 250F with April Roper following close behind. Roper wasted no time getting around Chandler to take over her usual spot in the lead. On the second lap Chandler got a hold of a rocket and shot past Roper to reclaim the lead. Chandler then kicked it up a notch and pulled some distance between herself and Roper, who faded back a little. Kayla Miller, recently moved up from her RM 85, was on the gas aboard her new Kawasaki 250F. Throughout the moto Miller improved tremendously, catching up to the back tire of the series leader Roper’s Honda. Miller pushed Roper until the end, taking the third place finish for one of her best rides of the season. Chandler went on to take the main event victory over Roper, something that rarely ever happens at Megacross. Catching up with Chandler after the moto she said, “I am so excited! It feels really great to get the win tonight!” Hannah Keith finished with fourth overall followed by Danielle Wilkinson rounding out the top five. In the 250B class, Denny Morsch got off to a great start along with Shawn Staunton and Jesse Keith. Usual front runner Cory Catalani had some things go wrong in the main event as he was stuck in the back of the pack throughout the moto. Eric Utech also had some trouble with the track, rounding out the top five in the main event. Morsch took the win aboard his Yamaha with Staunton fol-

lowing close behind on his Kawasaki. Ahead of Utech was Jesse Keith with the third spot and Ricki Williams finishing with the fourth place spot.

Maxx Malatia was the night’s big winner topping both 250A and Open A.

FORT, Continued from page 13 Things didn’t change any for those three in the second half, so Fortner emerged with his second Senior class win of the weekend. In Youth class action, Levi Peters claimed two class wins. His first came on his KTM50 in the 50cc class with the two best times of the day, a 4.348 second first round time followed by a 4.325 second effort on his second ride. Brodie Bennett and Ian Brown took second and third. Riding his KX65, Peters turned in the two best times in the 65cc class also. His first round 4.560 second time was good for the class win, followed by Christian Fitts and Derick Bell. Fitts took the 85Jr class win on his YZ85 with a fine 4.110 second time on his first ride. That time held up not only for the class win, but also for the Youth Fast Time Award. Peters claimed second with Jarred Brown third. Chance Lane was

the 85Sr winner. The best was saved for the last class, the King of the Hill class for the ten fastest riders of the day - a one run dash for cash sponsored by Kaleb Northrup and his www.kingofthehill.org website. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner was the ‘King for a day’, as he blitzed the hill in a searing 2.711 seconds for the win. 470 Plus finish Azzie weekend Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 12 By Dave Hollub

S

eptember always brings the track at Aztalan to the peak condition as the club prepares for the Mike Gaborsky Senior weekend, and this year was no exception. All week long sand was being trucked in and mixed into the track and small changes were being made around the grounds. Then after a Friday open practice and the Saturday senior races the crew set about prepping everything for Sunday’s race. Sunday morning, the sun came up on a track that was as good as it has been in years, and the prospect of great racing was in the air for the 470 plus entires. When the 50Jr. class rocketed out of the gates for their first moto it was Trenton Goldapski leading the way. Goldapski stretched out a lead by lap two and wasn’t challenged. Dylan DuClos was running second and for a while had pressure from both Sam Mayer and Elijah Tetzlaff. Goldapski repeated the holeshot in moto two with DuClos second. Mayer was again in third place but this moto he had Aidan McCormick behind him. On lap three Johnny James Schmeling celebrates his 50Sr overall with his dad.

Weber had worked through the pack to challenging McCormick. As they passed the scoring tower and began the final lap Weber slipped into fourth and charged out after Mayer, and just before the finish he slipped past to claimed third place. Goldapski (1/1) won the overall with DuClos (2/2) in second and Mayer (3/4) third. It was time for the big bikes to hit the track, and Unlimited A was one of the first up. Jonathan Hartman grabbed the holeshot but Bill Macmaster quickly slipped by with Joe Dretzka in tow. By the time they hit the plateau Jason Erdmann had moved into third ahead of Hartman. Erdmann was charging hard and made a pass on Macmaster before the end of lap one. Dretzka was able to stay out front the rest of the moto as Erdmann was being challenged by Macmaster in every corner. Macmaster finally stuck a pass on lap five to claim second place, barely edging out Erdmann. In moto two it was Dretzka out front all the way from the holeshot to the checkers. Erdmann went down hard in the start. Macmaster settled into second position unable to catch Dretzka and fought off an early moto challenge from Cody Simonton. It looked like Simonton was going to get an easy third place finish but on lap four Brad Behrens, determined to better his first moto thirteenth, began closing in on him. As they rounded the scoring tower Behrens was ahead of Simonton and despite pressure held his place to checkers. The 1/1 day earned Dretzka the overall with Macmaster (2/2) second and Simonton (6/4) third. Later, Dretzka reflected on a successful day, “In Open A I got a bad jump off the gate in moto one and was in the back of the pack. I worked my way up and ended up right behind the leader on the second to last corner. I was able to get by him for the win. In the second moto I got a little better start right around sixth. I worked my way up and got the overall win. Thanks to my sponsors MSR, Sportland2, Spy, Sano Systems,

and my dad for bringing me here all these years. I really also want to thank my sister and all my friends that come out and help me every race.” Kirsten Raemisch grabbed the Women’s holeshot in front of Brittany Curelo. By the time she hit the plateau Raemisch was settling into a comfortable run. Curelo and Kaylen Pellmann were side by side but Pellmann out jumped Curelo on the plateau to take second place away. Sierra Dortch was running fourth with Tammy Flemming and Ashley Densow close behind. By midway through lap two Densow had passed Flemming and was closing in on Dortch. Densow made her pass stick in the West sand section and grabbed fourth. Raemisch repeated her holeshot in moto two but this time Kaylen Pellmann was running right behind her. On the first trip over the plateau Jade Wennlund was in third with Dortch right on her back wheel and Flemming was battling with Brenda Garland for fifth. Dortch worked hard on Wennlund and finally stuck a pass midway through the second lap to take over third place which she kept to the finish. Raemisch grabbed the overall with a 1/1 day while Pellmann (2/2) was second and Dortch (5/3) was third. Dylan Densow shot off the line and grabbed the 65cc holeshot for moto one with Dalton Hein close behind. Densow was opening up a gap on second place rider Dillon Prusheik by the end of the first lap. Simon Walters was running third with Seth Doeberlein fourth. Doeberlein was getting pushed by both Jimmy Weber and Justyn Mack by the end of lap two. On the final lap both Weber and Mack slipped by Doeberlein and even though he pushed hard he just couldn’t regain the lost positions before the finish.

Densow took the second moto holeshot, but this time had Peter Paddock right there waiting for any opening. On their second trip over the plateau Mack jumped further than Paddock and was able to stick a pass for second place. Paddock soon had to defend his position against challenges from Weber. Weber finally made his pass on the west end and cruised to the finish in third. Densow (1/1) took the top step of the podium with Prusheik (2/4) and Mack (5/2) standing with him as well. Densow later said, “I raced 85 and 65. I took first in 65. I didn’t crash at all. I raced as hard as I could and was fast today. After I got the holeshot each moto I was able to check out a bit so I could just ride my own race and have fun. I am sponsored by Ride, Motosports Factory, and Sheboygan Yamaha. Thanks to Mom and Dad for bringing me to the races.” Aaron Koch launched ahead of everyone for the holeshot in moto one of Sportsman B/C, but as he hit the corner his bike stalled and Cody Vanbuskirk flew past him. Koch was fast to refire his bike but had dropped to the back of the pack. On lap one it was Vanbuskirk out front with Kyle Dunkin second, Jake Angove third and Brandon Marescalco in fourth. Before lap one was over Angove had moved up into second with Marescalco third. Thomas Garrett moved into fourth by the second trip over the plateau and was soon

pressuring Marescalco for third. Garrett finally found an edge and moved into third behind Angove. On the final lap Garrett slipped past Angove in the west end and then held onto his position to the checkers. Dunkin used the far outside line to beat Vanbuskirk to the holeshot for moto two. Vanbuskirk was out front by the time he hit the plateau with

Dunkin and Angove close behind. By the end of lap two Dillon Kau had moved up into second just ahead of Angove. Angove was pushing hard but couldn’t get close enough to move up past Kau before the finish. A 1/1 day won the overall for Vanbuskirk while Kau (5/2) grabbed second and Justin Wolf (4/3) was third. Vanbuskirk, “This is my first time here in several years and it went pretty good. The track is good, I liked it. The changes since I was last here make it a lot better. I have been

doing mostly Regional’s and Loretta’s these past couple of seasons. I want to thank my sponsors SF Performance, Midwest Action Cycles, Tom Zont, Answer, ProTaper, Scott, Mom and Dad.” Jamison DuClos grabbed the 85Jr. holeshot by a big margin ahead of the pack in moto one. As DuClos finished the first lap he had already built up a cushion of almost nine seconds over second place Dylan Densow. On lap two Densow was fending off the charges of both Stephen Myra and Nick Lorenz, until he bobbled just enough to leave the door open for both of them to slip by. Myra held off Lorenz for another lap until he lost a place in the sand by the barn section. DuClos’ lead was safe to the finish and Lorenz edged out Myra for the second spot. DuClos repeated his holeshot move in moto two with Lorenz in striking position. At the end of lap one DuClos had Lorenz on his rear wheel and Matt Swortzel was running third. By their second trip over the plateau both front runners were in the air at the same time and it looked like Lorenz was setting up a pass. DuClos opened up a small gap and then as Lorenz came up just short and went

down on the backside of the plateau. Myra went past into second place, but Lorenz charged back and by the end of the moto he caught and passed Myra for second. DuClos took the overall with Lorenz second and Myra third. After the race DuClos told me “My day was pretty good. Nick Lorenz was running a really good race keeping up but he crashed pretty hard over the plateau. The track is pretty good, kind of dry at the end but first moto it was awesome. Thanks to Rock River Yamaha, GYTR, Sunline, Fly, Arai, Alpinestar, EVS, and Dunlop.” Several riders commented on how good a job the crew did getting the track ready after being ridden on the two days prior. The entire track prep and watering crew as well as the rest of the club members deserve a big thank you for all the hard work they put in getting this weekend off. It was a great success. Packed weekend at Hangtime Akron, Indiana - September 5 By Lori Locklin

H

angtime MX Park was full of action over the Labor Day Weekend! It started out with an open ride on Friday where riders got in plenty of track time in anticipation of the upcoming weekend. Saturday morning was the 9th Annual Reads Racing Women’s Amateur Motocross Championship. Women riders were treated to a free meal, 4 foot trophies, a free t-shirt, and video of the event, and time on the track with no boys allowed! A special thank you goes out to Dreyer Honda and Dreyer Motorsports, the title sponsor of the event. Haley Davis and Erin Naulty were the two lucky girls who walked away with helmets. Reads Racing would also like to thank Bobby Elkins who coordinated the prizes and filmed and provided the videos to all the girls! There were six women classes ran, and some great racing was had between all the ladies. Maddison Guyer came out with the win in Mini Quad, followed by Jordanne Stichter. Some great racing in the Blaster Womens class with Lindsey Sandel bringing home the win. The winner of the 65 class was Kellie Naulty, while Sandy Klinger brought home the win in the Pitbike class. A great ride from Angelique Rees came in the 85 class! Angelique showed great potential out on the track throughout the weekend! The girl every boy was talking about was Cady Pressler. She not only took home

the win in the Women 105cc and up class but also the overall in the 250B, showing the guys what a girl rider can do! All the girls did an excellent job, we hope to see you all again next year for the 10th anniversary event. Saturday night was the Larry and Joyce Read Memorial Race. Larry and Joyce Read founded Reads Racing Unl Inc. over 25 years ago. Larry passed away in 2006, Joyce followed in early 2007. Each year Reads Racing honors Larry and Joyce with a Memorial Parade Lap in their memory. "It is both joy and pain to remember the passing of your parents. It brings joy to see all the people who remember them fondly come out and be together, but still painful to be here without them." said Carol Klinger, now President of Reads Racing Unl. Inc. Riders took to the track under the lights at Hangtime MX Park with the smell of Roasted Pork in the air! There was a free hog roast for everyone! Reads' famous chili was also served. Families and riders enjoyed eating and watching the great racing action under the lights! One of the best races of the night was between Jacob Clingaman and Blake Sarver. Clingaman and Sarver battled it out in the Mini Quad class with Sarver taking the win in the first moto, but Clingaman stayed positive, and managed to bring home the second moto win, which gave him the overall he was looking for! night was the 125 2-stroke class. In the first moto Quinton Camp brought home the win, with Luke Kinkade in second and Denver Rigsby third. The second moto mixed things up with Quinton finishing third while Rigsby pulled off the win. Luke Kinkade remained a fixture in second. That gave us a three way points tie for the #1 spot! Denver Rigsby was the overall winner. Sunday morning dawned sunny but with a chill in the air. Riders were coming from around the state to compete in the final round of the Indiana State Championship Series. The Sunday Morning silence was broken by the sound of the Quad A and B riders thundering onto the Hangtime MX race course. Shane Bolen took the win both motos with Sonny Nemitz right behind him holding down second in Quad A. Michael Schooley took home the #1 ride in Quad B. Riders in the +40 class mixed it up on the track! While Donald Baker managed to grab the win in both motos, riders behind him were back and forth. Bryan Bowen took third in the first moto, but was able to advance himself into second place in moto two for second overall. Rob Talbott took fourth in moto one, but took third in moto two for the third overall. Scott Swinford pulled off the overall win in the 250C class, with Tanner Walters finishing second. In the 85 12-15 Connar Troyer, Elijah Labordus, and Evan Denney dominated the top three spots in both motos! Dominating every moto he rode was Spykes KTM and Reads Racing mounted Dakota Robins. Dakota rode Supermini, Schoolboy 1, Schoolboy 2, and 125 2Stroke taking the win both motos in all classes. That’s eight moto wins and four overalls. During intermission Reads Racing took an extended break to make time for an Auction to benefit an injured rider. Eric Saunders had been severely injured only seven days earlier while riding on his practice track at home. Eric's first race was with Reads Racing, and they wanted to do something for him. But it took more than Reads Racing to pull off all of the fundraising activities throughout the weekend! The outpouring of support from the motocross community was amazing! As news spread of Eric's injuries and the fundraising auction, calls and e-mails came in all week! Carrie Davis spent hours on the phone and driving to dealerships to pick up donated items for the auction! Carrie brought items from Cyclesport Yamaha, Thomas Honda & Kawasaki, Maxim Powersports, Lake Cycle, B&E Honda, Honda of Michigan City and 22

Turn One Motorsports. Anderson Powersports donated a helmet with the design of a double cheeseburger! Lake City Honda/ Kawasaki of Warsaw donated two sets of motorcycle tires! Spykes KTM donated many gift certificates nearly all of which sold for more than the certificate was worth! Nick Jones from Race 2 a Cure secured and donated some very nice autographed Jerseys! Families donated race outfits they bought but never used. Extra parts, gear, and miscellaneous items. The Stanley Family even donated a 5-station workout machine for the auction! All together the auction brought in over $2,000! With such a short time frame Reads Racing was amazed at the response! It makes us so proud to be surrounded by such a generous motocross community! In addition to the auction Doc's Designs donated T-

Quad A class while Patrick Nicodemus won the Quad B. Long time Grand Prix rider Connie Feist got the win in +30A, followed by Jim Hunt in second. The +40 riders were led by Rob Watkins. Labor Day Weekend at Hangtime MX Park was a great time for all! Good food, friends, and racing!

veryone was standing as the national anthem started. You listened and took a deep breath looking at the flag, realizing this was the final race at Hawkeye Downs for the 2010 season. The air was already chilly as the temperature topped out at 52 degrees. This of course sent spectators huddling in blankets, wearing hats, mittens and sweaters. Quite a different scene from just a couple weeks ago. A night full of fun was in order as it was the CVTR awards night. The demeanor of the riders seemed lighthearted. As the tally of points were already complete, there was no pressure on the finish position. All first motos ended quick as they were all cut short a lap to enable the awards ceremony to commence at intermission. The podium was filled with the top riders of the season class by class. The dedication and perseverance from the whole season paid off for many of the riders. McCabe took home three first place trophies in the classes of +25A, 250A and Open A. Andy Ney walked away with first place in Open B, 250B and 14-24B. Once the ceremonies were over the racing began again. The second motos of the night started out of the gates with power and energy. This was a combination of the +25A and +25B class riders. In +25A, Kurt McCabe was out front with Reese Lauritzen and Todd Walton right behind. Walton skided across the track ruts and got in the path of Lauritzen. This caused Lauritzen to go down taking a few of the +25B riders with him. DJ Norby and Dustin Roskop pile drove into Lauritzen as there were no other lines to take. Rochelle Charnowski avoided the fun and shot right around them. Everyone untangled their bikes, composed themselves and finished the moto. Overall in +25A it was McCabe, Lauritzen then Walton. The +25B first place was taken 24 CYCLE USA, November 2010

Norby, followed by by Charnowski, Roskop, Pettit and Moran. As the racing continued, I sat there in the stands watching, sipping on my warm chocolate, wrapped up in a blanket and forgeting to write down the exciting things that are happening right in front of me. I continued to watch the entertainment as though they are doing the jumps and whips just for me. My pen got cold and

quit writing ( tried to dip it in my warm chocolate, didnt work) so i sat back and enjoyed...Ok ok, leaned forward cuddling my blanket and enjoyed. Then... that was it.... it was done... No more bikes or quads at the gate. All the flaggers streamed to the finish line. The stadium seats emptied fast and trucks and trailers were slowly making their way out of the driveway. The show was over... the lights turned off...

Cregg wins, Sullivan claims title Columbus, Indiana - September 26 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck

T

he sixth and final round of the 25th anniversary Hare Scramble Series for the Stoney Lonesome Championship was once again started on the historic powerline property overlooking the rolling terrain. The complete lack of rain and burn bans in the surrounding counties was a good indication of the dusty conditions that were expected. The intimidating log which the Peewee racers passed underneath in round five had been removed, but the remainder of the course was relatively unchanged from previous races. Hunter Huser and Camden Feltner had an incredible back and forth battle for the PeeWee Premix race. Right behind the two of them was another intense battle for the Injector race between Reed Day and Lance

Heavy A winner Jeff Gregg.

Maschino. All four riders rode clean races and worked through the tight course and lapped riders until Huser and Maschino finally prevailed for their class victories. The mini course covered over three miles of the Stoney Lonesome property following a large section of the upcoming big bike race course. For the second race in a row at Stoney Lonesome, the mini riders were routed through a woods observation check due to the close proximity of the trails. Luke Chilman led the Super mini class down the power line and into the first turn entering the woods. Tyler Vore once again hung close throughout the race, challenging Chilman at several points in the race. Chilman maintained his fast pace winning by a mere 0:36 over Vore with Colton Wilkes claiming third place. Jaden Smith, Keagen Lee and Michael Witkowski put together solid laps while battling for the top spot in the 85cc race. Jaden Smith went into the final lap with hopes of claiming the class victory, but faltered late in the lap allowing Lee to take the lead with Witkowski only 0:06 seconds behind. Lee followed in third place, slightly disappointed, but happy with his overall performance. As has happened in several races this year, all the 65cc riders rocketed into the woods with Dawson Dunnuck sitting on the line kicking trying to fire his bike. Vincent Smith was once again the first 65cc rider through the gates, but was feeling the pressure of John Henry Robinson and Kayden Young right on his wheel. Dunnuck worked his way up and into fourth place with Langdon Felnter clinging to his wheel. Robinson held strong until a crash on the white flag allowed Dunnuck and Felnter to pass for third and fourth, but unable to close on Young. Feltner capitalized on a late crash by Dunnuck and landed a podium spot and his best finish of the year at Stoney Lonesome. The Big Bike starting area was filled with 93 riders ready to tackle the dusty trails on the

Stoney Lonesome property. 14 out of 93 riders remained on the lead lap of the event. Jeff Cregg was out of contention for the Series Championship due to a DNF, but still had a shot at the Heavy A championship. Cregg set the pace early in the race leading the pack through the checkpoint on the first lap with a 14:53 lap time. Following close behind was Nathan Sullivan and Jordan Johns with Daniel Sims and Zeke Smith rounding out the top five. At the midway point of the race, Cregg still had the lead followed 1:02 later by Sullivan. Johns kept a cool head and staked a claim on the number three spot, but with a 0:13 disadvantage. Coming in fourth was Sims with Smith maintaining the fifth place position needing to erase a 3:39 deficit to move up one more position. During the first lap, Vet A rider Andy Cregg realized he forgot his barcode and had to make an unexpected stop in the pits to search for the required barcode. Cregg faced a tough challenge to recover that lost time. By this point in the race, he had moved up to the number

11 spot overall coming from as far back as 41st. Jeff Cregg was the first rider to receive the white flag at the end of lap five with Sullivan coming through the gates trailing by 1:14. Sims and Johns were clearly battling for bragging rights coming through in 3rd and 4th separated by 0:02. Smith remained in fifth place. Cregg still had the lead at the checkered flag securing his Heavy A series championship. Coming through the checkpoint in second was Sullivan knowing he had secured the Stoney Lonesome MC overall series championship. The bragging right battle between Sims and Johns continued on the last lap with Sims taking the honors. Andy Cregg was riding like a person possessed, claiming the fifth place spot from Smith following his barcode mishap and a lat lap crash by Smith on a hill climb. In the end it was a good race and great series. Jeff Cregg controlled the field throughout the race, with an average speed of 19.89 MPH.

2010 Super Series Finale Millville, Minnesota - Sept. 19 By Rolfe Otterness

T

he 2010 Super Series finale took place on a nice fall weekend with a number of class championships still on the line. There were a total of nine races this year of which the best five finishes for each rider count toward the series awards. Over 400 entries came to do battle and finish out their points accumulation effort for the year, somewhat of a light turnout maybe due to expectations of a wet track. The racing surface was in pretty good shape, but lots of ruts in the corners due to soft, moist soil, giving everyone a workout. One class with a fierce points battle throughout the year was +45A. Scott Steinle, David Spizman and Donny Bonnicksen went at it moto after moto. This weekend, Spizman was absent

but Steinle and Bonnicksen were raring to go. Steinle jumped out front in moto one as Bonnicksen dropped into second with Iowan Rory Huntoon third. Steinle seemed to have the edge and held the lead for the distance. Huntoon snagged third with Lonny Brown close for fourth on the last lap. Steinle reiterated his holeshot in moto two with Bonnicksen close behind. Brown settled into third just ahead of Huntoon. Steinle was in control for the rest of the race with Bonnicksen close to his pace but just not quite on it. At the flag Steinle took the win to add an exclamation point to his season, followed closely by Bonnicksen. Brown held off Huntoon’s efforts early in the moto and captured third for the moto and overall. Scott Cripps repeated his first moto performance for fifth. In the Schoolboy class Dil-

lon Carlson fired off the line for the holeshot in moto one, but dropped back in the pack as Keenan Strom took over out front. Henry Miller was quickly challenging for the lead and took command shortly when Strom had a spot of trouble. Miller ran in for the win with Brady Rhode taking second from Cody Breeden as the moto wound down. Phillip Maus and Strom hightailing it in for 4-5 finishes. Moto two featured Strom blazing out to lead the pack from the start with Rhode in pursuit. Strom maintained control for the moto win but Rhode won the overall with his 2-2 score. Miller took third by a few lengths over

Breeden and fifth went to Maus. Cloe Spaeth pulled off a solid launch from the line to head the Women’s class going into turn one, but Kayla Solheid displaced her for the lead over the next few laps. Spaeth cranked it on to take back the lead when Solheid bobbled, falling back into the pack. As the checkered ended the moto, Spaeth took the win over Tayva Strom, Rebecca Wright and Shayanna Wilson. Jacqueline Riess motored in for fifth. Moto two had Spaeth out front with pressure early on from Wilson. Spaeth edged away as the moto progressed and won with a secure lead. Wilson in a

fine ride held on for second with Strom third. Reiss improved to fourth this time out and Wright took fifth. Henry Miller and Jerry Robin have been blazing fast in the 85 12-15 class all summer. Robin jumped out front off the line in the first moto but swept a bit wide opening the door. Miller thanked him by taking away the lead as Robin latched onto his rear fender. The next lap saw Robin make a mistake and Miller got a good bit of breathing room. From there on the moto belonged to Miller. Nick Schnagl, Josiah Hempen and Nolan Heppner rounded out the top five. Robin led just a bit longer in moto two, but Miller knifed by on the inside of the last turn and went on to lead a carbon copy ending with all the top five riders repeating their first moto finishes. Action was intense in the 250A class with Spring Creek’s Alex Martin on hand to challenge all. Dalton Carlson took

up the challenge, taking the lead away from the holeshotting Cody Lackore and then had to fend off Martin for the next few laps. Martin was able to get by to lead the last two laps, but Carlson kept it close, only two seconds back at the checkered. Jake Loberg, Brandon Bartelds and Nick Jackson were next to put in

Record turn-out for New Ulm New Ulm, Minnesota - Aug. 29 By Mike Nelson

T

he Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club couldn’t have asked for better weather on this late summer weekend for their annual Hill Climb. Over 240 entries showed up from all over the Midwest to take on the hill at the Dutchmen’s club grounds in southern Minnesota. Without digging deep into the archives no one could be certain if this was a record, but as far back as anyone could remember this easily beats any attendance they’ve had for their regular D23 Hill Climb. With so many riders there was no shortage of action on the hill. Things kicked off with the ATVs taking the hill right after the traditional cannon shot following the national anthem. Tyler Clark took the first round lead with an impressive run of just under 4.3 seconds. Clark’s first run held for the ATV win and it showed everyone that there was plenty of speed in the hill for riders willing and able to hang on full throttle all the way over the top. After the ATVs it was time for the kids to take to the hill on their 50cc micro-mini machines. Being the steepest hill on the D23 circuit, it has a bit of a reputation for eating up these little machines just past the first breaker, so with extra hill crew in place these youngsters gave it their all. Kaden Funk and Davis Sunken surprised and thrilled the crowd being the only micro riders to hang on through the steep middle section of the hill and get over the top on their first runs. Funk was just three tenths of a second faster than Sunken and both were nearly five seconds faster than Damian Huppert who was the only micro to go over the top on the second round. Logan Peterson jumped out in the Mini Sr. class with a first run that was fast enough for the class win ahead of Jason Laven and national champ Nathan Prebe. Peterson found himself sitting in third place in the 125cc class after the first round. National champion Andy Eichinger had the 125cc lead by nearly half a second over Peterson and Gabby Prebe who were less than a tenth of a second apart after their first runs. When they came back around for their second runs, Peterson tore up the hill like a man on a mission and shaved nearly three quarters of a second off his time to take the win giving him a nice double for the day. Jessica Prebe trimmed over a second off her first run to take runner-up ahead of Eichinger and her cousin Gabrielle. The excitement level always gets kicked up a notch or two when the Open bikes take to this hill that has always favored raw power over quickness. After the first round, Brent Stevenson held a tentative lead over the

Then came local favorite Duane Walser on his Harley and following Cipala’s lead cranked off a run of 4.230 seconds to take the win and fast time of the day… for regular class competition. The final class of competition was a special treat by the Dutchmen as they opened up registration for a vintage class to run. Brad Cain took the win on his Honda that has seen more championships than I can count over the years, and it also prompted Greg ‘Coot’ Schmidt into strapping on the gear and taking that old Yamaha thumper over the top a couple times for fun. With such an enormous turnout, competition ran well into the early evening, and the sun was getting low in the sky by the time they had the ten fastest riders lined up for the The Vintage class brought out King of the Hill round at the Greg Schmidt on his old Yamaha ‘Thumper’. end of the day. Nick Bronnenberg took new fast time of the day with a 4.168 second run on his 750 that still sports Cipala’s old number plate. Cipala wasn’t about to be beat by his old bike and when he lined up for his King of the Hill run he must have been remembering his record run as he grabbed everything he could get out of the throttle and tore up the hill with a 3.988 second run. Not The fastest run of the day went to Todd Cipala on his Harley.

hat a great racing weekend! Crossroads MX held a two-day event with a practice kicking it all off on Saturday. Sunday came with exciting racing being a ProAm race with a $3000 purse, as well as round ten of the Illini Super Series with Kawasaki and Husqvarna contingency. As practice began, the track started rutting up with multiple lines in every corner from all the moisture in the track. The track’s new water truck sure can lay down some water, so dust wasn’t an issue at all through the weekend. The new, EMT crew from Wisconsin had an easy day as they were left on the sidelines with no accidents to tend to (always a good thing). In the Open A class, sixteen out of the twenty-one riders were on a Kawasaki. With dirt flying, Justin Kelly took the lead as they headed around the first corner with Travis Sewell on his back tire. Aaron Teague, Chris Akay-

Landon Rapp won the 50Sr class.

din, and Alex Ray rounded out the top five. With great lines in the corners, positions quickly shifted as Sewell moved into the lead in the second lap. By the third lap Justin Freund had moved into third from an eight place start, and continued to battle his way to take second in the nineth lap. Sewell checked out by the fourth lap to take it all the way for the win. James Povolny moved up to take over the fourth place mid-moto, but had bad luck, having to pull off shortly after. At the end Sewell took the win ahead of Freund, Kelly, Steven Simmoneau, and Akaydin. James Garrett, who went down on the first moto, led the pack for the first three laps in moto two with Freund knocking at his back door. Freund made the pass in the forth lap, and held the lead until the eigth lap when Sewell charged through the riders, blasting into first place to win the moto for the overall. Freund finished second with Garrett third, ahead of Povolny and Crawford.

As the 250A class charged off the line, it was Yamaha mounted Luke Peters leading the first lap with James Povolny, Travis Sewell, and Dalton Forester looking for a chance to move up. In the second lap Povolny moved into into the lead spot with Sewell right behind him and Freund moving into third. By the fifth lap Sewell had moved into first and then checked out to win the moto. Povolny held on to second with

Freund third. In moto two, Sewell went down in the first lap and was unable to complete the race. Jonathan Six didn’t finish the first moto, charged off the line and was able to hold on to the lead position for four laps of the thirteen lap moto. Povolny made the pass in the fifth lap to take over and go on to win. The battle continued between Six and Crawford with Crawford making Cross continued on P37

ith a vast turnout of racers and spectators, they all seemed to have a pleasant evening, minus the biting mosquitoes. This time around the Beaver Cycle Club had control of those pests as they fogged them away before, during, and after the competitive action. The youngsters in the 50cc Shaft class were a pleasure to watch, with Caden Demaa nailing the holeshot. Reeling next in line was Ethan Jahnke and Colton Witucki. After spacing out and wasting no time, Demaa grabbed the checkered at the finish line with Jahnke holding on for second ahead of Witucki. The Classics class can be a dangerous class, jam-packed with bikes having no suspension or brakes. The first time around, Matthew Mcnall snatched the lead but had to restart the race due to another collision. Dick Mueller set his sights high and stole the holeshot from Mcnall, but he came back on the outside

Dash for Cash winner Cory Mahlum.

and stole the lead again. Mcnall was running strong until he had machine problems and sacrificed a few positions. Shane Sullivan was next in rank but William Ferguson was trying. Coming out on top was Sullivan followed by Ferguson, Mueller, Mcnall, and rounding out the top five was John Lovas. Starting off the Open Amateur class was Molly Terry, a young lady from Illinois. Terry was quickly leading a fierce battle going three wide, again behind the youthful lady was Robbie Treinen, David Schultz, and Morgen Mischler. Mark Schnettler, dropped a few spots from a little mix up on the track, so Dan Murre shot up to take Schnettler’s position. Taking command before the end was Treinen, captivating the win from Terry, proceeded by Schultz, Mischler, and Murre. The Quad Dash brought some eager racers as the champion earned $150. Rob Reitz grabbed his way to the front as the green light appeared. Settling for second was Cory Mahlum, but after a couple of laps he found an opening and

blazed passed Reitz. Pushing hard for that first place spot, Reitz fought a fierce battle for the lead but settled for second. Combating for third and fourth place Brady Schultz and Wayne Richter were riding side by side to the finish line. Mastering the win was Mahlum, pressured hard by Reitz, Schultz, and Richter. As the Open Pros came to the starting line, the spectators stepped up to the fence to watch this exhilarating race. Timing his start perfectly was Jesse Janisch. With every racer wanting that $1,000 paycheck, they were running three wide all the way through. Janisch lost control and fell back a couple positions. Taking the lead was Brock Schwarzenbacher and not far behind was Dan Mischler and Austin Greenland, traveling all the way from Pennsylvania. Going down low, Greenland passed Mischler. We all know the rush that racing gives to racers and fans alike. So, on a day full of high expectations, it was great to see at the end of a race, a dad walk up to his son, Dade Noones, while still on his bike, with arms wide open for a big hug and a pat on the back for his performance. Mullins wins big in the dust Greencastle, Indiana - Sept. 18 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck

R

ound #3 of the all new Mid America XC series, which joined forces with AMA and District 15 was held on Saturday September 18th near Greencastle, Indiana. The weather leading up to the race had been bone dry leaving the track extremely dusty. The PeeWee race course wound through the rolling landscape and included some relatively mild climbs. Lance Maschino had little trouble handling the other competitors in the PeeWee Injector class. Brody Smith pushed hard and landed a solid second place finish. Colton Beavers led early in the PeeWee

Premix race before Camden Feltner took the lead and started to pull away. Trouble late in the race eliminated Feltner’s chance of a victory and opened the door for Beavers to retake the lead and eventually the victory. The Mini riders faced wide open corn fields, flowing trails and the treacherous rocky creek passing under the bridge near the property entrance. Luke Chilman pulled away early in the event securing his impressive youth overall victory. Blake Rinsch fell back early in the race, but pushed hard to land a second place Super Mini plaque. Austin Lee and Mike Witkowski once again hooked up for a very intense wheel to wheel battle for the 85cc race with Keagen Lee lurking right behind them wait-

ing on a mistake. Witkowski took over the lead late in the race, but almost lost it going into the wooded entrance near the creek. Lee took the lead, but only for a minute before Witkowski rebounded and held on for the 85cc win. The 65cc riders enjoyed the rolling landscape allowing for a little air time on the little bikes. Vincent Smith was challenged early on in the race by Dawson Dunnuck, but managed to make a good pass and cruise to another victory. Dunnuck held on for second with Kayden Young and Langdon Feltner rounding out the top for spots. The Big Bikes were facing what was sure to be extremely dusty conditions based on the previous Mini races which had just take place. The MAXC crew was definitely on top of the situation by watering the score tent and start area in order to reduce the dust and create a safer environment for these two key areas. The AA row included current GNCC stars Chris Bach and Charlie Mullins along with the top District 15 talent and a few additional riders looking to stake a claim on the $2,500 top prize. The start was impressive with all the bikes leaning into the first turn charging for the small opening into the woods. Once the

dust cleared, one lone rider, Jordan Johns, was left picking up his bike and heading into the trail by himself. As the race developed, it became clear that Bach and Mullins were going to battle to the end for that coveted prize money. Jeff Cregg was hanging in third place hoping for a failure ahead of him which would clear the path for his shot at the money. Bach led before a crash allowed Mullins to take over the lead. Bach was able to regain his composure and push hard on the last lap to close the gap on Mullins though a sea of lapped riders and a massive cloud of dust. Mullins, realizing that he had a decent buffer, rode smart and held on for the overall victory with Bach and Cregg rounding out the top three spots. Kirkland, IL’s Ron Downen went 1-1 for the +45 and +50 class wins at Sunset Ridge.

D17 Bonus Points day at Sunset Walnut, Illinois-September 12 By Jennifer Kenyon Photos by Missi Thede

A

s the outdoor motocross season comes to a close, District 17 points battles are heating up as riders are looking to capture a District championship. Sunset Ridge held a bonus points round on Sunday, giving riders the opportunity to make up any points they may have been lacking. Over 330 entries were in attendance, rearing to grab those points as well as enjoy the great atmosphere that Sunset offers. The track was in great shape after getting the weekly rain storm, just enough to moisten up the dirt before Bob and the crew worked it to perfection. Quad A had a great turnout as thirteen riders lined the gates, ranging from the usual locals to a few that traveled quite a distance to ride the popular track. Sean Taylor of Montezuma, Iowa got off to a great start with Jon Ven John of Missouri close behind. Taylor and Ven John are fresh off the southern practice circuit and it showed as they pushed hard to stay out front. Pearl City’s Ethan Pickard hung with the southern boys, showing them no mercy. Jason Wehrli and Justin Medine went back and forth, battling for the fourth place spot. Taylor cruised his way to the victory with Ven John in second, Pickard took third and Wehrli held off Medine and Halsey

for fourth. Halsey took fifth and Medine fell to the sixth spot. Jason Wehrli must have undergone some technical issues before moto two as he was not able to start the race. It was Taylor once again for the holeshot with the rest of the pack close behind. Ven John tucked himself behind Taylor and rode out the second moto the same as the first. Medine wasn’t satisfied with his first moto sixth, so he spent much of the second moto battling his way to the front, resulting in a podium finish and taking the fourth place overall. Pickard could not hold his third spot for the second moto, dropping one position to fourth but still capturing the third overall with a 3-4. Halsey kept it consistent, finishing with a 5-5 for a fifth overall. Kyleigh Mclaughlin grabbed the holeshot in moto one of the Women’s class, followed by Kayla Miller of Joliet, Illinois and Shaelee Harvey of Moline, Illinois. Mclaughlin extended her lead throughout the moto as Miller and Harvey fell off pace just a bit. All three women held their positions in moto one, proving that holeshots are extremely important on a track this size. Second moto brought about a few changes. Recently moving up from her RM85, Kayla Miller showed these women that she can ride a big bike too as she holeshotted them on her 250F. This time Harvey pulled into second and Mclaughlin trailed behind in the third place spot. Miller went on to take the victory as well as the overall. Mclaughlin took the second overall with 1-3 and Harvey went 3-2 for the third place overall. Recently finishing within the top 40 in points at the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Series, Shane Sewell put in a solid weekend of riding aboard his brother, Travis’ #134 bike. Travis spent the day watching and rooting for his brother as he was out with a wrist injury, making his bike readily available for Shane to rip on. With fast local guys like Greg Braet, Ryan Poulter and Ozzy Barbaree, Shane had his hands full in the Open A class. That didn’t faze him as he ripped the holeshot and quickly made a spot for himself out front. Barbaree, Poulter and Braet filed in behind Sewell and battled it out for the second place spot. Barbaree was able to hold the others off for second and Poulter locked in third. Braet struggled to get around Poulter, finishing fourth in front

#57 Conner Robinson won the Open C class, and finished second in 250C.

of A class rookie Reese Miller who rounded off the top five. The second moto began just as the first with Sewell, Barbaree, Poulter and Braet leading the way. Miller chased the pack of veterans sticking with them for most of the race. Shane rode the wheels off his brother’s 450, claiming the victory in both motos. Barbaree put up a good fight against Sewell, taking home the second overall with 2-2. Poulter and Braet took home the third and fourth spots, both on their new KTM machines and Miller took home the fifth overall with a consistent 5-5. Eddie Norred of Bristol, Wisconsin got his Yamaha off to a great start in the 65Jr moto one with the KTMs of Jason Gepford, Tyler Collins and Lucas Filips on his tail. Aiden Kaiser put his Cobra 65 right into the KTM and Yamaha infested pack, pushing his way into the top five. Kaiser made his way into the fourth spot, just ahead of Collins. Norred held off Gepford to take the moto one win with Gepford in a close second. Filips maintained his third spot while Kaiser held off Collins to finish with fourth. T

he Beaver Cycle Club hosted their final double header of the year with the short track event on Saturday evening and a TT Scrambles on Sunday afternoon. The weather sure cooperated with the sun shining brightly, then cooling down to make a perfect night of racing. With the end of the year nearing, the competitors were all on top of their game. The Twins/Vintage class was put to the test with their older bikes, mostly Yamahas. This division was one of the larger groups riding on the well groomed short track. The front runner was Danny Murre, of Beaver Dam, but going three wide after a few laps, caused some riders to dart into the tires. After a restart, Murre jumped into the lead again, with his lucky pink rabbit hanging onto his handle bars. Coming from behind was Ian Steen, trying to capture the lead from Murre, while Ronald Bean and Larry Piekos were challenging each other for better positions. Steen finally grabbed his way to the front for first, followed by Murre, Billy Vrana, Bean, and rounding the top five was Piekos. Terry Vestal proved to be the man to beat in the Senior class as he scored the holeshot. Andy Zipperer tried his best to claim the victory, but Vestal kept the lead from start to finish. Robert Hartgerink and Cory Smit traded positions several times throughout the eight lap main event. With seven contenders wanting the win in the 250cc class, only one could take the

largest trophy home. Morgen Mischler charged hard for the early lead, but pressuring him was Zachary Ryan of Randolph. Mischler high sided on the back stretch. Ryan clinched the win, with Alexia Hoffmann taking second, and Andrew Schleicher reeling in for third. One of the crowd’s favorite classes of the night was the 505cc race. David Schultz grabbed the holeshot in this very competitive event. Most of the riders rode their machines to their fullest, sometimes going three wide to get a better finish. Honda riders Brock Schwarzenbacher and Kyle Weise were out for revenge and wanted to take over the lead from Schultz. Schwarzenbacher stole the first place spot for a bit, but it didn’t take long for Schultz to take it back. Schultz claimed the win, with Robbie Treinen working his way to second, Joseph Barr with an impressive third, Mitchel Schultz in fourth, and capping it off for fifth was Chris

Special day for D23 Youth riders Woodland, Minnesota - August 1 By Mike Pohl

T

he Woodland Mini Enduro, presented by the Norsemen Motorcycle Club, was held on August 1, 2010. This was a brand new event and was possible thanks to landowners Steve and Kizzy Venhuisen. The Venhuisen’s support the Ronald McDonald House. They ran a concession stand on their porch with proceeds going to this worthy charity. The Norsemen donated $500 to the Ronald McDonald House as well!. The event itself was a test to see if future rides can be held here, possibly even a fullblown adult enduro someday. Too early to tell right now about the adult enduro, so don’t ask! The Norsemen already run two D-23 enduros, which is a big commitment already. Nearly 40 mini riders signed up for the event, which was a huge turn-out considering there wasn’t an adult enduro taking place the next day. After the mini ride, a “Mom’s Race” took place, with six mothers hitting the course...some of them literally (just like their husband’s!) The riding spirit was just as fierce as anything witnessed all summer. After the Mom’s race, Open Riding took place for ten

bucks. This new course, about three miles long, was cut out of the forests and fields on the family’s property. It was cut mostly by Trail Boss Bob Maki and his trusted lieutenant Matt Stukel. It challenged all riders...kids and adults alike. The Start sent everyone into the woods. It was ideal enduro terrain; just the right mix of tight, technical stuff with some open sections allowing throttles to be twisted a bit. Towards the tailend of the course things got “handle bar tight” through some very closely spaced trees. Premier rider Austen Pogreba ripped off five laps in an one hour and five minutes, and took the checkered flag. Logan Kittock took first place in Pee Wee, with four laps in one hour and one minute. Kacey Johnson took first place in Girls with four laps in one hour and four minutes. Dalton Kittock was first in Macro and Joseph Goth was the king of the Micros. These really young riders bashed their way through much of the same terrain that the older kids did. There were some very special trophies awaiting the riders. Minnesota riding legend Matt Stavish donated his very own personal trophies from his collection. These were greeted with a lot of excitement from both kids and adults. It was a truly inspirational class act, from one of our sport’s most distinguished riders. Imagine having one of these sitting in your room! Things look good for another Woodland Mini Enduro in 2011. It was a great day for one and all, including a clown with a big red nose and a hamburger in his hand. Let’s hope it happens again.

Sugar Maple perfect in September Hillpoint, Wisconsin - September 26 By Dave Hollub

I

t sure seems people are learning about the new District 16 motocross gem hidden up in the driftless area of Wisconsin, and each race more riders show up and leave with plans to be back. Despite a chilly night and muddy practice, the track developed its multiple line corners quickly. When the gate dropped for the first class the newcomers quickly realized they were in for a great day of racing on a well formed track. 50Jr. took the first gate drop and Rylee Schiller jumped out front at the holeshot with Dylan DuClos and Luke Vanlyssel close behind. While Schiller was busy defending against DuClos, Vanlyssel had his own battle going with Johnny Weber. The rest of the race DuClos charged hard but just couldn’t slip past Schiller. Vanlyssel was less successful fighting off the hard charging Weber and on lap three Weber took over third and held on to the finish. In moto two Schiller again hit the holeshot out front and held on to the lead to the finish. Weber was in second with DuClos third. On lap three DuClos tangled with a lapper and went down losing his position to Vanlyssel. DuClos got up fast and caught and passed Vanlyssel early on lap four and managed to slip past Weber before the checkers flew. Schiller went 1/1 to grab the overall while DuClos (2/2) was second and Weber grabbed third with a 3/3. The moto one125Jr holeshot went to Jeremiah Lemke as he rounded the corner well ahead of everyone, and then quickly put a gap on the rest of the class, cruising to an easy moto win. Meanwhile Dakin Coons was being challenged by AJ Meidl, and as they hit the Stadium triple Meidl jumped out front. Coons kept pressure on Meidl while fighting off Dustin Sikorski who was coming up from behind. On lap three Meidl dropped out due to a mechanical issue, leaving Coons to take over second and Sikorski third. In a repeat of his moto one performance Lemke grabbed a big holeshot and quickly separated from the pack. This time Sikorski was in second with Meidl close behind. Coons used the tighter stadium section to move past Meidl on lap two and then in the valley sections closed in on and passed Sikorski to grab second. Coons held off Sikorski and finished the moto in second. Lemke (1/1) took the overall with Coons (2/2) second and Sikorski (3/3) rounding off the top three. Later Lemke talked a bit about his day, “The first moto in 125Jr. I got the holeshot and led the whole race. Then in the 250B I got the lead in the first corner after the

holeshot, by then the track was pretty rutted up and in good shape. I was able to stay out front to the finish. In moto two of 125Jr. I got the holeshot again and was able to pull away a bit. The track was kind of flat because the quads had just gone so it was pretty easy riding. By the second moto in 250B the track had gotten rough again and I pulled my third

holeshot of the day. I kind of went after some of the A guys and was able to catch a couple before the end. Thanks to my sponsors TA Motorsports of Francis Creek and my Mom and Dad.” Ted Coplien Jr. already had a good sized lead as he hit the tunnel triple on lap one of the +30B/C class moto one, but soon he had

Darin Dionne (233) out front of the Vet A class

Troy Fisher and Jason Boebel closing in on him. Fisher was able to take the lead in the stadium section and Boebel slipped past as well. As they came out of Hollub’s Hollow Coplien was the only one to triple out. Brandon Yanke and Tom Ferguson were next to slip by Coplien. Fisher now had Boebel putting his wheel in any chance he got and as they hit the whoops they were bar to bar. Boebel was able to get out front as he found an opening in one of the stadium bowl turns. Coplien was now on a charge to regain his lost positions and by the time lap three finished he was back into third with his sites on Fisher. Coplien and Fisher jumped the tunnel triple side by side and by the time he hit the whoops Coplien had closed in on Boebel as well. Boebel managed to gap Coplien a bit in the rollers but by the time they passed the scoring section Coplien was back out front where he stayed to the finish. Boebel finished second with Fisher third. Yanke grabbed the holeshot in moto two and by the end of lap one had Thomas Conroy in second. Boebel was right behind Fisher and as they hit the whoops he passed him to take over third. Fisher was not giving up any room to Boebel and on the next lap he was back in third and challenging Conroy. Once past Conroy on lap four Fisher started to push Yanke until on lap five in the rollers he was able to make the pass for the lead. Fisher used his moto two win to take the overall while Boebel (2/3) was second and Yanke (4/2) was third. Yanke later, “My day went very good. Finally in the second moto I got the big holeshot and led almost to the end until I made just one little bobble and I got passed in the last few corners. I learned a lot from that mistake. The track today was absolutely primo. The track was as good as any track I have ridden anywhere, period. I think Jason did a really great job today and all his help pitched in and had the track ready to race. I have to thank my wife Tawnya, she sponsors everything and does everything at the races, she is great.” Zach Coons was out front of the 250A class at the holeshot and stayed there to the finish, using his familiarity with lines on the track. Kody Kamm was second with Vaughn Mays and Cody Fredrick right behind. Before the end of lap one Mays had passed Kamm and for the rest of the moto they battled it out. On lap three as they hit the Daytona section Kamm powered past into second only to have Mays retake the position by the end of the lap. Kamm was in position to move in on Mays and on the final lap made his charge. By the time they hit the stadium section Kamm was on Mays rear fender and as they hit the rollers he found the opening to slip into second. Mays chased 50

CYCLE USA, November 2010

him hard but Kamm crossed the checkers just ahead. Mays grabbed the holeshot in moto two but Coons was out front as they hit the tunnel triple. Kamm was on the move and by the time the pack dropped into the first valley he was right on leader Coons with Mays close behind. Coons was able to hold off Kamm for another lap but as they came out of Hollub’s Hollow Kamm was out front. Kamm held on to the lead to the checkers with Coons and then Mays close behind. The overall went to Kamm (2/1) with Coons (1/2) second and Mays (3/3) finished up the podium. In Sportsman B/C it looked like Jason Bernhard had the holeshot but Matt Meyers ducked inside and stole it away. Brennen

Kody Kamm dominated all three A classes with five moto wins.

Marshall immediately pulled up on Meyers’ rear wheel and the chase was on. Marshall stuck his wheel in at almost every corner and then just before the finish on lap two he stuck the pass and held on to the finish. Tyler Stoll was running third with Aaron Horack and Bernhardt close behind. On lap four William Menzel carried momentum into the Daytona section where he made the pass on Bernhardt into fifth. Marshall led the way around the holeshot for moto two with Meyers sticking on his rear wheel. Meyers found the edge as they left the stadium section and took the lead. Menzel settled into third and kept enough of a gap on Bernhardt and Stoll to let him cruise the rest of the moto. In a repeat of moto one Marshall

once again passed Meyers for the lead as lap two ended and then held off Meyers’ challenges to the finish. Marshall (1/1) snagged the overall, Meyers (2/2) was second and Stoll (3/4) was third. Marshall, “I guess I rode solid and didn’t taste any dirt for the day. It’s always nice battling with Matt, we are friends, and we are pretty clean about it. He actually got me a couple of times but each time I got him back. The track was perfect, this morning it was a bit muddy which let it rut up pretty good. It really was perfect all day. I want to thank Brewsters Lanes, Henke Signs, Car Quest of Reedsburg, and especially my mom, she gets my brother and me to the races and helps out with everything.” Jordan Orr grabbed a big holeshot in 250C moto one but Tyler Stoll got by and now Orr had to defend against AJ Meidl. Jason Bernhardt was in fourth with a hard charging Bobby Vitullo coming on fast. Vitullo slipped into fourth midway

through lap two and held Bernhardt off to the finish. Meidl got by Orr on lap three and claimed second at the finish. In moto two it was Bernhardt first over the tunnel triple with Vitullo in second. Vitullo briefly moved into the lead but Bernhardt took it back within a lap leaving Vitullo with Dylan Denruiter on his back fender. Midway through lap two Denruiter moved up a position and as the leaders came out of Hollub’s Hollow it was a close race with Bernhardt out front and Denruiter, Vitullo, Stoll and Orr all within a few bike lengths. On the final lap Stoll slipped past Vitullo and then Denruiter to claim second. Stoll’s 1 /2 day was good enough to take the overall while Bernhardt (5/1) was second and Vitullo (4/4) finished up the top three.
