CYCLE USA, October 2009

From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman The past month has been busy on the motorcycle scene. Our district season is winding down with only a few events left in each discipline. Banquet chair Mark Becker is working diligently on plans for this year’s celebration at Jackpot Junction in Morton, MN. We are also preparing for our annual business meeting to be held on Nov. 21st at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bloomington. We will hold our sanction meeting the morning of the 21st and the business meeting starting at approximately noon. We will have the 2010 season schedule finalized by the start of our business meeting. This is a new format for this year as in prior years we have always had the business meeting in conjunction with the awards banquet. The KC Hall in on American Blvd just west of Lynndale Ave and is more centrally located to enhance attendance. Other happenings include our Homeboy Ryan Dungey winning the 250cc outdoor Championship. As always his persistence and determination paid off. One could say luck had a part in his title but I am a firm believer in the fact that most of ones luck is earned. Speaking of sports heroes, how about John Dowd at Southwick this year. I have always been a fan of Nolan Ryan a man that pitched his first major league baseball game in 1969. 20 years later in his last season in the majors he pitched his last no hitter. A totally unheard of feat. John Dowd has now moved to the top of my list with he finishes at Southwick. Dowd at 44 years of age turned in performances that put the youngsters to shame. Granted it is his home track, but for a man that is 44 to ride the way he did under the horrendous conditions is also unheard of. If you don’t have a hero, Dowd is a man to look up to. I am still hoping (in vain most likely) that MX sports will take measures to even the playing field in the 250 class next year. We will wait and see. On the off road scene Paul Whibley has been virtually untouchable this season. He has won every event he has entered. Although I did not witness the OMA round in MN I was told by peoOn The Cover: Wonder Lake, Illinois’ Derek Whitney at Motosports Park in Byron, IL.

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... ple there that the young Alex Martin gave him a real run for his money, and relinquished the race lead to Whibley on the final lap. Quite a feat for a motocrosser in his first big off road attempt. We had several of our racers do well at Loretta Lynn’s National Amateur Championships. Led by Jeremy Martin who finished 2nd in both Supermini classes. Nicole Evjen took a fourth in the girls class, past D23 racer Gannon Audette took a title. Danny Robins has some good motos but lacked consistency. Robert Kohl our older racer had good consistent finishes. Brandon Haas had good finishes. Congratulations to all of our racers that made it to Lorettas. It is a huge accomplishment. I do not have the room here to mention all of our racers that qualified but I do hope to see a lot of red number plates on next season’s bikes. On the political front we are arranging another meeting with Senator Klobuchar, but our issues with the lead bill are rapidly taking a back seat to Health reform. This really scares me because if the screw up health care the way they screwed up the lead bill we could be doomed, but that is an argument for another time. We are still pressing forward with reforming the current lead bill. Lastly remember that this is our 40th Anniversary year. If you know a member that you feel has met the criteria to be nominated for a lifetime achievement award please get the info to myself or the district office. We have had several nominees so far but I know there are more out there that are deserving of this recognition. Put the annual business meeting on your calendar and remember we are looking for new people to join the board. Good luck with the remainder of the season. I hope to see you on the tracks and trails of Minnesota.. Mike Sunset Ridge wraps-up 2009 with a new event. Looking for a fun way to put a finishing touch on your season? How about a Grand Prix where you get a bunch of track time. We’re putting an event together for Nov. 1st. We’ll mix in most of our motocross track, adding grass sections and fun connections, and have a class for every rider, bikes and ATV’s. One, single long moto, not as grueling as a hare scrambles... but all the fun. For more information see www.sunsetridgemx.com.

National Hill Climb a Success

the 2009 national champions. new Ulm, Minnesota - August 15-16 By Mike Nelson

A

t just twenty-one years of age, Jay Sallstrom of Mankato, Minnesota has reached the pinnacle of Amateur Hill Climbing, taking the top spot in the Open class with the fastest run of the 2009 AMA Amateur Hill Climb National Championships. Sallstrom’s winning run came late on the second day of climbing and provided a thrilling conclusion to an action packed weekend for the thousands of fans and hundreds of riders from across the nation that had gathered at the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club facilities located just outside New Ulm, Minnesota. The weekend got under way Friday with all participants required to pass their machines through Tech Inspection. A riders’ meeting was held late Friday afternoon followed by the best pork chop dinner I’ve ever had. The Nicollet County Pork producers came in and provided the chops for this amazing meal that was free for all the participants and just a nominal charge for their families. As dinner was winding down, local musicians provided entertainment for everyone. The rest of the weekend was all about ripping up the 210’ hill, and winning a share of literally a truck load of trophies. The Dutchmen were well prepared with the giant tarps they had arranged to cover the hill in the event of rain. Reports varied from a half an inch to an inch of rain that fell in the area during the early morning hours Sunday, but when the tarps were removed, the face of the hill proved to be in excellent shape for racing. Rick Prebe of Bay City, Wisconsin got the first draw in the riding order with the Vet ATV class kicking things off each day. Prebe was a little nervous the first day just returning to the hill this year after nearly ten years away, but got over the top respectably both days. Randy Maynard of Delbarton, West Virginia held the class lead after the first day

of climbing, but faster times across the board on Sunday left him in fourth place with Brian Childs of Minnesota improving by a full second to take the Vet ATV win. In the Micro Mini class it was Levi Peters from Illinois coming back from a disappointing first run of only 78 feet to get over the top faster than the boys from Kentucky, Cody Blaire, Graham Burchett, and first round leader Brock Riffe, the only riders of the class to get over on Saturday. Riffe also led the 65cc class after the first round but was one of only two riders unable to improve in the class, dropping to fifth overall and opening the door for Luke Cipala from Ellsworth, Wisconsin who was eager to improve a messed up first run that left him with a footage in the middle of the pack. Cipala had a clean second run of 8.238 seconds to take the title. a run of 6.176 seconds over Marissa Stahl and Jaclyn Gerdes. Bacon watched Sunday as several women put up times in the five second range led by Molly Carbon with a time of 5.588 seconds. Bacon let it all hang out on her second run trying to beat those fast times, but when she came off the second jump a little too much traction and throttle combined to bring the front end over, spilling her off just past the 200 foot mark leaving her in fifth place overall. The 125cc class is being taken over by a new batch of young riders just out of or still riding in their final seasons of mini class competition. Lukas Eichinger and Logan Peterson led the pack Saturday posting identical times of 5.957 seconds. Eichinger improved by over half of a second Sunday to take his first title. Youngster Dylan Nichols topped the 200cc class taking the title from last year’s champion, Jacob Prebe by less than half a second. Vet rider Jeff Jack from Wapello, Iowa finished third just a tenth of a second behind Prebe. This young group is already working their way up into the 250cc class as well with Logan Cipala taking the title with a second round time of 4.616 seconds over Nichols and first round leader Marcus Winch. Top ten times in the class were all in the four second range with less than four tenths of a second separating the big first place trophy from eleventh place. The battle in the 450cc and 4-Stroke classes came straight out of the D23 season score sheet to land on top of the Nationals putting home town rider Jared Gitter with his so far perfect season against friend and rival Aaron Prebe. Prebe is part of that big racing family out of Minnesota, and has dominated both classes in two districts for the past several years. Gitter had the earlier draw and set the bar high, putting up a fast time of the day up to that point. Prebe also put together a near perfect run and when the clock stopped his time was two one-thousandths of a second faster. Neither would better their times Sunday with Prebe claiming the title. Eric Wheelwright improved from a mid-pack performance Saturday to take third with a smooth ride up the hill of 4.633 seconds. Luke Parmeter took the first round lead in the 4-Stroke class getting over the top in just over four and a half seconds with Prebe in third and Gitter finishing the first run in a distant sixth. Gitter dug deep and put up a time of 4.426 seconds to take the lead. With another early draw Gitter could only watch and hope his time would hold up. Parmeter and Prebe both improved but not enough to catch Gitter, taking his first National Title. The veteran riders put on quite a show as well with fast times in the Senior classes running in the mid four second range. Kewaskum, Wisconsin’s Lloyd Mueller topped 6

With the hill record already falling and the 40+ class ahead of fellow D16 rider Dave the Open bikes coming to the line Sunday afJelinek and local rider Duane Walser who ternoon, the stage was set for an incredible dusted off his gear to come out of retirement finish to an already awesome event. Cipala for one last competition with his home club was the fifth up in the class and seemed to be finally hosting their first National event. Tim a man on a mission as he launched his Harley Cain bested the 50+ class ahead of Dave out of the hole thundering up the hill and flyBaird of Michigan. Local rider Ricky ing over the top with another record time of Wiltscheck put in a nice performance ending up with a trophy in the 50+ class just a month after his cancer surgery. Doug Marble from just down the road in Mankato, also known as ‘Nine Toes’ also dusted off his old red, white and blue flair legged riding leathers from his stunt riding days to take a shot at the hill. ‘Toes’ hadn’t ridden competitively for “a long time” and finished at the bottom of his class, but managed to put his Harley over the top on his second run and was thrilled just to be part of the show. There were plenty of wild rides throughout the competition to entertain the fans with riders pushing things to their limits and beyond for the right to claim best in the nation. One of the most spectacular wrecks came in the second round of 4-Stroke ATV competition when Scott Buck from Pennsylvania was trying to catch Marty Thayer of Indiana. Buck found himself coming over the last jump way too far to the right but wasn’t going to give up on his chance for a win and ended up launching his wheeler through the fence on the right side of the hill and into the trees that kept it from tumbling down the steep bank off the right side of the hill. Thayer held on for the title and Buck’s first round time was good Wisconsin’s Bodee o’neil enough to keep him in second place. taking a run in the Micro Mini class. There was plenty of excitement in the air as the big bikes took to the hill with hill record holder Todd Cipala on hand along with plenty of other very fast riders. Cipala dominated the show on Saturday, leading all three big classes, and threatening his own record as the only rider to break into the three second range with matching times of 3.962 seconds in the 750cc and Open class. Marcus Winch found some magic with his Honda in the 600cc class and put together his own run of less than four seconds to steal away the win ahead of Jared Gitter and Cipala. Cipala would hold on to take the title in the 750cc class ahead of Kaleb Northrup and West Virginia’s Johnny Curry Jr. bettering his first day’s run and breaking his old hill record with the new time of Minnesota’s nathan Prebe 3.873 seconds. won the 85Jr. championship.

3.826 seconds. Just a couple of runs later AMA Hill Climb Representative Mike Bronk would give Cipala a little scare with a run under four seconds. Ryan Connelly from all the way out in Massachusetts also threatened Cipala but fell a couple of hundredths of a second short. With only a handful of riders left Jay Sallstrom pulled into the start area with his new Honda CBR1000. He and his father built this insane machine over the past couple of years and unveiled it this spring to a host of problems getting all that power transferred to the hill. Sallstrom and his father have worked relentlessly to get the gearing right, and get that big machine hooked up for runs that would scare the daylights out of most riders. With a few last words of advice from his dad and a nod from the starting official, Sallstrom wound up the throttle, let out the clutch and with all 1000 cubic centimeters screaming for all they were worth, he launched that big Honda up the hill flying over the top stopping the clock with another new hill record of 3.791 seconds! Sallstrom’s new record held for the class championship and fastest time of the event. Sallstrom is no stranger to winning earning four other national titles since he started riding competitively at the age of nine. Sallstrom says none of it would happen without the help and support of his parents, and his sponsors Preferred Welding, Starr Cycle, Amsoil, Champlain Auto Wash, and the Flying Penguin bicycle shop. He also credits his success to the amount of seat time he gets on the motocross circuit. Whenever there’s not a hill climb Sallstrom is at a motocross track somewhere getting seat time that he says is one of

the main key’s to his success. Sallstrom says that hill climbs happen so fast that you need to be able to react to whatever happens without really thinking about it. The things you learn motocrossing transfer directly to the hill. Congratulations to all of the winners, and to all of the members and prospects of the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club for putting on “the best Nationals ever”, a sentiment that was repeated by many of the riders as well as others that have been involved with Hill Climb Nationals in past years. The club’s hard work preparing and organizing really paid off in running a smooth event, but what people found most enjoyable was the wonderful hospitality of the club and their fantastic facility. Summer fun at CMJ Raceway Hixton, Wisconsin - September 6 By Doug Forstner

R

acers generally agree when the weather is good, the action on the motocross track is good. Such was the case at a beautiful September day of racing at the CMJ Raceway in Hixton, WI. Riders were greeted to sunny skies and temperatures peaking around 80 degrees. The CMJ crew had just the right amount of moisture worked into the track, which made for great track conditions all day. Rider turnout was on the lighter side but racing action was awesome on the true outdoor style mx track. The 125Jr class got things going as usual and Cody Fredrick was back from a broken wrist suffered earlier in the season. Racing for the first time in about two months, he seemed to pick off right where he left off, pulling the holeshot in moto one, and winning both motos. Cody Steuck and Joe Gomez ran up front in both motos, and battled and exchanged moto positions with Gomez getting the nod in moto two to take second overall. Ian Malinowski and Bobby Zielinski also swapped positions in the motos with Malinowski getting the better of Zielinski in the end to take a hard earned fourth. Mini 65cc 7-11 was next and KTM mounted Bill Brady used good starts to get out into the lead early in both motos. He went on to win both motos ahead of Max Steinhorst and Kendra Randrup. Steinhorst ran well in moto one, holding off the charge of Randrup. Kendra must have studied between motos because she was able to take advantage and get second in the second moto ahead of Steinhorst. Trytan Stewart and Persha Mason were also in the mix but something happened to

Stewart’s bike in moto two giving Mason fourth overall. The 85cc 12-15 class also had a good turnout. Yamaha mounted Joe Gomez put his bike out front in moto one ahead of Brandon Clifford and the pack. However, in moto two, Clifford was able to beat Gomez to the finish for the win and overall. Dustin Sikorski was solid going 3-3 on the day ahead of Jeffrey Stewart who also was coming back from an injury earlier this year. Honda mounted Jason Erdmann put his bike out front early in both Open A motos, and then distanced himself from the pack. Andy Lieders was second in the first moto with Jesse Koth a close third. In the second moto, Joey Dretzka made up some ground from his first moto sixth to take the runner-up spot behind Erdmann. Lieders still went 2-3 to get second ahead of Koth’s 3-4 and Dretzka’s 62. Jake Oldenburg rounded out the top five. Mike Barta rode hard in the +50 class. His 2-1 score gave him the overall, beating his buddy Gary Behrens’ 1-2. These guys raced hard and put some distance on third place rider Pete DeGrand who went 33 on the day for third overall. I was talking to Pete

and he didn’t care that he didn’t win because he said he was just happy to be out racing on one of the “greatest tracks Wisconsin has to offer”. Mike Jazwiecki and Kenton Price rounded out the top five. Like Father, Like Son at Mitchell Mitchell, Indiana - August 23 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck

T

he second of a two day event was held at the Midway MX Park in Mitchell, Indiana. The weather remained perfect as did the track conditions. While the mini and big bike courses were reversed from the previous day, the pee-wee course remained the same. Troy Lee won in the Senior A class as did his son Austin in the 85cc class. Langdon Feltner picked up where he left off leading the 50 Premix group from flag to flag. Tanner Guerrettaz ran most of the race in fourth place until late in the race when took over second place. Guerrettaz tried to close the gap but ended just shy of Feltner. Jacob Stark continued his dominance and landed another victory in the Injector class. Luke Chilman fired out with the hole shot in the 85cc class looking to land his second victory in as many days. Early into the first lap, Chilman tangled with a super-mini rider allowing a train of 85cc riders to get by him on the hillside. Chilman struggled to get his bike free, but finally succeeded and charged on trying to catch the group. Austin Lee came through the check in the lead with Alex Witkowski, Keagen Lee, Blake Rinsch and Chilman rounding out the top five. Witkowski suffered a flat tire, ending his hopes, but allowing Chilman to continue his hunt for the top spot. Keagen Lee remained in the second spot when the white flag was given at the start of lap four. Chilman, realizing time was running out, made a good pass on Lee and set his sights on Austin Lee. While Chilman turned up the heat, it was not enough to claim the victory from Austin Lee, who rode a smart race with minimal mistakes. In the 65cc class, we saw 19 riders leave the line with seven finishing all 10 CYCLE USA, October 2009

four laps. Michael Witkowski burned up the track leading all four laps in runaway fashion. Jacob Pyne appeared to have a solid grasp on second place while a classic race was brewing for third through seventh. Eric Douglass, Dawson Dunnuck, Vincent Smith, Tate Guerrettaz and Cory Jordan were once again in wheel to wheel action. As the race progressed, Guerrettaz and Jordan faded slightly while Douglass, Dunnuck and Smith swapped positions. Late in the race, Douglass suffered a flat tire reducing his ability to continue at the intense pace. Smith maintained his consistent lap times landing him a third place finish behind Pyne. Dunnuck and Douglass came though the checkpoint in fourth and fifth, and Guerrettaz appeared to have sixth locked up until he ran out of fuel 100 yards from the finish. Cory Jordan was able to capitalize on Guerrettaz’ misfortune and land the sixth place finish. The big bike event started with 81 riders waiting for the sound of the shotgun blast indi-

overall Winner Jordan Ashburn.

cating their turn to fire the engine and head for the first turn. Of those who started, 16 out of 81 eventually finished six laps. Jake Fiddler wasted no time in setting the pace on the first lap - turning a 17:22 time - but looking over his shoulder at Jordan Ashburn following. The next three riders through were Nathan Sullivan, Zachary Nash and Jordan Johns. The top five remained in their respective positions throughout the

first three laps with a change occurring at the end of lap four. Ashburn was the first to arrive at the checkpoint on lap four, giving us a new leader with Fiddler only behind by two seconds. Tyler Tischler had taken the number five spot. While there was no change in the top five spots during the fifth lap, there were some key changes taking place among the second row participants of the

Evan chaille (382) leading the front row off the start.

Vet A and Sr A classes. In the Sr A class, Troy Lee and David Dunnuck entered the race in a dead heat tie for the Southern Indiana Series Championship. Dunnuck had led the first four laps with Lee hanging back about fifteen seconds. During the fifth lap, Vet A riders Mark Jones and Scott Kirchoff along with Dunnuck and Lee were all mixed up seeking bragging rights when Dunnuck washed out in a corner late in the lap. Jones, Lee and Kirchoff continued their charge with Dunnuck finding himself now seventeen seconds back at the end of lap five with Sr A rider Robert Williams looming thirty five seconds back. Lee hammered down on the last lap and successfully held off Dunnuck to take a five point lead in the SIS championship with one event remaining. Jordan Ashburn kept the lead at the end of lap six, and opening the lead on Fiddler. Sullivan rolled through the gates in third. Tischler moved up one spot to finish in fourth place with Nash rounding out the top five.

Megacross Fair Racing Returns Mendota, Illinois - September 4 By Nikki Dixon

I

t’s been 17 years since Megacross has raced during the Tri-County Fair, or on a Friday night. The 2009 fair race had a strong turnout with over 280 entries, compared to 79 riders at the last one in 1992. There was a good sized crowd on hand, with t-shirts and goodies tossed into the grandstands at intermission. The track had some changes, including a new grandstand finish line jump. Conditions were a little muddy during practice, which developed some rutted turns, making line choice important for the main events. The fair race 250A and Open A purses were increased by $800, to bring the payouts to the maximum allowed, with Justin Kelly and Ryan Poulter sharing the wins. Maxx Malatia had the track dialed, as he picked up wins in 250B, Open B, and 14-24. Seth Kuss and Robbie Hyson were also multiple class winners with two each. Kuss topped 250C and Open C, while Hyson dominated in 85Sr and Super Mini. In the 250A main event, Poulter led the

10-rider field through the first turn, followed by the only two-stroke mounted riders, Kelly and Tom Hofmaster. Kelly was on the gas, passing Poulter for the lead on the opening lap. After a lap, the running order was Kelly, Poulter, Hofmaster, Derek Whitney, and Chad Johnson. The top three stayed within a few bike lengths as they blazed around the track. On lap six, Hofmaster charged through a rutted turn to pass Poulter for second, as Johnson closed in on the top three, setting up a four-rider battle for the final two laps. A few turns before the checkered flag, Hofmaster tried to make something happen with an inside line after the step-up, but Kelly held off the pressure to take the hard earned win. Hofmaster, Poulter, and Johnson crossed the finish line within seconds of each other, with Whitney wrapping up the top five. Poulter picked up another holeshot in the 10-rider Open A class, with Johnson, Hofmaster, Kelly, and Jonathan Six in tow. Johnson chased Poulter for the entire race, showing Poulter a wheel here and there, but couldn’t stick a pass. Hofmaster, Kelly, Six, and Whitney mixed it up for third early in the race, with Hofmaster inching ahead to round

out the podium, behind Poulter and Johnson. Six and Whitney reeled in Kelly, to complete the top five, as Kelly appeared to have a mechanical issue. Hofmaster started out front in the 11rider +25A class, followed by Johnson, Adam Marten, and Jason Kloptowsky. Johnson stayed on Hofmaster’s rear wheel, and was trying to work the inside lines, but came up empty. Hofmaster captured the win, with Johnson second. Marten held off Kloptowsky for third, as Kloptowsky and Brian White completed the top five. Troy Quest led the 16-rider +30B class through the first turns, followed by Jeffrey Evensen, Ryan Moss, and Shawn Christen. Moss reeled in Evensen for second mid-race, and hunted down Quest, eventually passing him for the lead with a lap to go. Moss pushed ahead for the win, over Quest, Evensen, Shawn Palade, and David Henry. In the 250B main, Maxx Malatia picked up the holeshot, trailed by Collin Licastro and Matt Hammond. Hammond passed Licastro for second on the opening lap, and hunted down Malatia, closing the gap mid-race. But Malatia picked it up and sprinted to the checkers, to capture the victory. Hammond secured the runner-up spot, while third place Licastro ran into problems, dropping back to last place. Zack Scott held off a hard charge from Matt Dissell to finish third, with Dissell and Denny Morsch wrapping up the top five. Zach Coons had a big holeshot in Open B, chased by Malatia, Hammond, and Morsch. Malatia took over the lead quickly, with Hammond all over him. Malatia protected his lines, and stayed out front for another win. Hammond and Morsch secured the final podium positions, while Jesse Keith, Gary Smith, Coons, Bill Chrisos, and Leland Bragg diced for fourth, with Keith and Chrisos completing the top five across the finish. Malatia also topped the 11-rider 14-24 class. Hammond carded another runner-up finish. 125cc class winner Reese Miller rounded out the podium, followed by Licastro and Kyle Entwistle. Charlie Snow grabbed the holeshot in the Quad A main, followed by Stephen Schenk and Neil Hambly. Jason Wehrli was running fourth when he tipped on his side in a turn. Wehrli quickly returned to four wheels, but the bobble dropped him to the back of the pack. Snow and Schenk battled for the lead, with Schenk pulling the trigger with an inside pass on lap four, through the three tabletop rhythm section. Schenk then sprinted to the checkered flag for the win. A few turns before the finish, Snow slid out after the stepup, and went off the track, allowing Justin

Medine and Jeremy Beetz to finish on the podium. Shawn Parpart led the Quad C class around the first turn, with Joseph Vinachi and Derek Eiten in tow. Parpart and Vinachi stayed close in the opening laps, while Charles Torres moved into the top three and closed in on the leaders. Parpart, Vinachi, and Torres had a great race in the final two laps, going side-by-side in multiple sections of the track. Vinachi tried to attack on the inside through the big bowl turn, but Parpart closed the door and stayed out front for the win. Vinachi and Torres rounded out the top three, while Eiten held off Brandon Chapman through the final “S turns at the finish. In the 50Sr class, Robert Copenharve started out front, followed by Shawn Thompson and Tyler Evensen. Copenharve was on the gas, as he opened up a big lead over the field. Thompson had a mechanical problem, and pushed his bike back to the pits, while Evensen and Nolan Dickinson ran in the top three. Shane Reilly reeled in Dickinson for third late in the race. Copenharve captured a huge win, and Evensen held off a late charge from Reilly for second. Timothy Lowe and Patrick Murphy went bar-to-bar through the first turn in 50Jr, with Lowe moving out front for the lead. But Murphy answered back to become the new leader early in the race, chased by Lowe and Travis Wilkinson. The top three stayed close as they raced around the track, with Murphy eventually pulling ahead for the win, followed by Lowe, Wilkinson, Radko Tomko, and Ethan Eslinger. Dickinson led the 13-rider 50cc 4-8 class through the first turns, trailed by Wilkinson, Tomko, Garrett Ward, and Kyle Green. Wilkinson challenged Dickinson for the lead early in the race, but Dickinson picked up the pace to stay out front. Ward caught up to Wilkinson, and the two traded positions multiple times for several laps in an exciting battle. The top three stayed close to the finish, with Dickinson taking the win, and Wilkinson edging Ward on the final lap. Robbie Hyson picked up the

charlie Snow leading Jason Wehrli (#37), and the others in Quad A.

holeshot in the Super Mini class, followed by Jordan Mackiewicz and Shane Johnson. Mackiewicz made a mistake on the first lap, and dropped back in the pack, while Hyson and Johnson made their way through the rhythm section, trailed by Greg Rogers, Kody Smith, and Joey Fortune. Hyson pulled away, while Fortune reeled in Johnson, eventually passing him for second late in the race. Mackiewicz climbed back into the top five, but had more problems on the final lap. Hyson carded the win, over Fortune, Johnson, Jacob Wever, and Smith. Hyson started out front again in the 15-rider 85 Sr main chased by Mackiewicz, Fortune, and Wever. Hyson never looked back, as he went wire-to-wire for the win. Mackiewicz and Wever mixed it up for second, with Wever getting the nod. Fortune dropped outside of the top five, allowing Tyler Simpkins and Smith to round out the top five. Seth Kuss led Open C through the rhythm section on the first lap, followed by Nicholas Broll, Joe Ahern, Tony Spizzirri, and Mike Milewski. Kuss stayed out front, while Ahern and Spizzirri moved into the top three, and stayed with Kuss. With a lap to go, Spizzirri crashed in the bowl turn, but remounted quickly, holding onto the third spot. Then Spizzirri had more issues on the final lap, giving up positions to Broll and CYCLE USA, October 2009

Garrett Mitchell. But Broll fell in the final turns before the checkered flag, losing the couple of spots he gained. Kuss picked up the win, with Ahern, Mitchell, Spizzirri, and Broll wrapping up the top five. 250C was the biggest class of the night with 20 riders. Ahern picked up the holeshot, chased by Kuss and Zach Hochstatter. Kuss moved into the lead early in the race, trailed by Hochstatter, Mitchell, Cody Gehant, Spizzirri, and Broll, while Ahern dropped outside of the top ten. Mitchell reeled in Hochstatter for second on the fourth lap, while Kuss pulled away from the pack. Kuss captured his second win of the night, over Mitchell, Hochstatter, Spizzirri, and Gehant. Wiles takes it all in Springfield Illinois State Fairgrounds Springfield, Illinois - September 7 By Gordon Lunde

T

he Springfield Labor Day weekend races have been classics for years. The short track and TT events being recent additions, don’t have the long history of the Mile, but this short track event will go down in history. It started on Saturday afternoon with threatening skies and off and on rain showers. Nothing serious, but enough to interrupt the show. After getting in half of the qualifying rounds, the rain stopped the program. From there the show was grading machines, scraping off several inches of track to try to find something dry enough to race on. The rain stopped but then came seemingly endless hours of dragging the track with screens to get the track in shape and rollers to repack the clay surface. Finally, about 10:30 p.m. with a thinning crowd of spectators, the show got back under way. With half of the field still not qualified, it was looking like a long evening ahead. The program was shortened to get everything in but, it was not to be. After qualifying and two heat races that were restarted due to slippery conditions and crashes, the program was stopped. Seven bikes went down in turn one during a restart of heat #2 with rain falling and the show was rescheduled for Monday. On Monday it took several more hours

to get the track ready for racing. Because of the completely new conditions, everyone had to requalify. Qualifying was started with a resounding cheer from the hardy folks that could stick around for Monday’s show. Matt Weidmann, was fast qualifier for the day with a 13.290 time around the Springfield short track. Heats one and two went off well, but then officials decided to groom the track before heat #3. Chris Carr showed his displeasure with a lengthy heated discussion with Mike Kidd. Grooming for the 3rd heat race enabled that to be the fastest heat of the day and gave winner Joe Kopp an advantage in starting position for the final. The 25 lap National was a great race. Joe Kopp jumped out front at the start with Henry Wiles chasing and Jake Mataya third. On lap nine Jared Mees got by Mataya and caught the Wiles, continued on page 17 chris carr, Mike Kirkness (87) and Jake Mataya (29) in action at Springfield. CYCLE USA, October 2009

Action delivered at Fun Valley Montezuma, Iowa - September 5 By Mark Bonnell Photos by Missi Thede

F

un Valley Moto-X’s two-day event on Labor Day weekend was the official kick-off to the final third of the Iowa State Motocross Championship Series. Fun Valley has held twoday combined motorcycle and ATV events all season. The events have become very popular with fans and racers alike, offering two great events on a weekend with only one trip to and from the track. With the track’s former life as a ski facility, there are plenty of large hills to race up and down. The elevation changes make for a challenging course for riders of all ages and skill levels. Combine the challenging track and the natural progression of the riders over the season and you’re sure to see some great racing. One of the most exciting classes of the weekend was the 250B class on Saturday. From the very second the riders left the gate, it was clear to all that this would be a special race to watch. Kody Pirie, who normally gets excellent starts wasn’t even in the top five as the riders cleared the uphill double leading to the upper section of the course. It was Minnesota’s Zach Williams out front as Blake Rice, Mason Kerr and Dylan Busby passed back and forth several times in the first few corners. Shay Moore worked his way past Michael Larson as Pirie passed both riders in the whoop section and in the tricky off-camber section. At the end of the first lap, Pirie managed to dispense Rice and Kerr near the end of the lap and passed the scorers in second place. Colton Hildreth rounded out the top five. As lap two unfolded there were two battles underway. The first was between Williams and Pirie. The second battle was for third place between Moore and Hildreth. Hildreth held it wide open as he launched off of the ski-jump and clicked another gear and outran Moore as he accelerated down the huge hill. Pirie tried lines I’d never seen him use before and made it clear that he didn’t want to settle for second place. Pirie dove to the inside up to the uphill doubles and the drag race was on. Williams and Pirie went up the face of the first double side by side, but Pirie managed to get to the ground first and was first over the second double and the triple. As the riders rounded the final corner and made their way over the finish line jump, it was Pirie with the win ahead of Williams. Hildreth and Moore were next to cross the line. Moving into fifth place was Dylan Busby, who didn’t have the best start, but proved that he had the speed and stamina to be there at the end. Moto two was the first class in the second set of motos. The riders were treated to a freshly pepped and watered track and showed their appreciation by putting in another exciting moto. Once again, Williams had a great start, so did Pirie. Kerr also had a great start and was able to head over the 16

uphill doubles in third place. A bit farther back, Moore and Hildreth again were going back. Lane Matice put in a great first lap crossing the finish line in fifth, but soon found himself on the ground just one corner into the second lap. Late in the moto, Hildreth was again able to pass Moore for third. Kerr was putting in a strong ride and proved that moving from the 85cc class to 250B was a good move. Busby also put in another excellent moto and rode a smart race. For the second moto and also for the day it was Williams with the win just ahead of Pirie. Hildreth, Moore and Kerr were third fourth and fifth respectively. Be sure to put Fun Valley Moto-X’s last race weekend of the season on your calendar, it will be October 17th and 18th. On lap twenty Wiles put his head down on the Kawasaki KX450F and got by Kopp in turn three and from there on took off to the checkers taking the win and AMA Grand National Singles Championship. Mees and Mick Kirkness battled for third place with Mees managing to hold off Kirkness for the position. Behind them, Sammy Halbert fought off Matt Weidmann for fifth and Jake Johnson, last year’s champion, took seventh ahead of Chris Carr, J.R. Schnabel and Jake Mataya. Wiles was happy to get the season over with, one that he didn’t think he had a chance at after injuring both wrists back in June. Wiles said, “When I first got hurt, I thought, ’Oh my gosh, this is never going to happen.” But a trip to Dr. Ting helped him make the return. “I was able to make it happen and I am so happy for my team to finally get this title”, he said. In other action, the AMA Pro Singles riders, with one round remaining in the schedule, put on a great show. James Rispoli, second in the championship chase, had to finish ahead of Brad Baker, the points leader, to have any chance at the championship. Twice the fun at Tigerton

50Sr holeshot – #188 Eddie norred, #36 carter Biese, #201 Bryce Hansen. tigerton, Wisconsin - August 29/30 By Pete Emme

T

igerton is known for its immaculate dirt, sort of Millville and Red Bud type of consistency. The track always shapes up nicely on race days as the crews at the MotoZone get up plenty early in the morning to prep it for their riders. Mother Nature hasn’t been nice to the facility in 2009, in fact, heavy rains hit the complex once again for the third time this season right before the race. On Friday night, heavy thunderstorms passed through, but this time it was much needed as the crews decided to let it rain and then prep the track in the morning which made a perfect track. When the racing was complete on the first day of the double header, steady rain fell once again. Rains made it a mess on Saturday night, but the crews were up at 4:00 to scrape off the slop and move the Tigerton soil around so riders were treated to another great track on Sunday. I really have to give kudos to the crew for going that extra mile to ensure a safe and fun track. Over 375 entries were in attendance over the two-day event, and many prizes were given out to trophy recipients. Along with that, there were numerous certificates from various industry companies that included free Dunlop tires. Sunday also had Yamaha contingency. You always know you’ll get treated right when you enter the

MotoZone, and best of all you get one the finest tracks in Wisconsin to ride. Saturday action was hot and heavy in the Open B division as Eric Derlein jumped out of the shoot in first, only to be overtaken by sand specialist Cody Warren and Justis Heckendorf as they exited the first corner. Warren put himself into the lead by the time they hit the rhythm section ahead of Heckendorf and Jacob Wunderlich. Derlein fell back to fourth. Warren hit the soil, handing the lead to Yamaha rider Heckendorf, who immediately stretched his lead out as Wunderlich moved into second. Heckendorf ended up winning the moto by over 30 seconds. “I thought I got a good jump, but Eric Derlein and Cody Warren beat me to it. I got around Derlein and I got in behind Warren on the first lap before he slid out in the whoops, and then I pretty much rode it out to the win,” Heckendorf said. Warren came back strong in the second moto after garnishing a fifth in the first. Warren took the win and it was good enough for him to capture third overall behind Wunderlich’s tallies of 2-3. Heckendorf’s consistent 1-2 scores netted him the overall. “I got second place on the holeshot and I followed Wunderlich through the first lap and then got around him in the rhythm section while I triple-doubled past him,” said Warren. “I then saw Justis coming from behind but I think he settled into second knowing he was

getting the overall.” In 50Jr action it was Joshua Merten moving out to the early lead with Logan Joachim second and Dylan Downs in third. Downs fell, but then got up and worked back up to get past Joachim for second, setting his sights on the leader. Merten put the hammer down, and led the way to the finish. The second moto had Merten in the lead to win back to back motos. In Sunday action it was Brandon Crevier getting the holeshot with Aaron Lehr in second in the Open A division. Lehr went down in the rhythm section, sending him with the paramedics to the hospital with a broken femur. Heal up quick brother, you’re always fun to watch at the track. Ben Peterson moved into second while Joe Dretzka had some troubles as well. Crevier and Peterson ended up having a great battle early on. Peterson got around Crevier in the whoop section and then Ryan Gilbert moved into second to go after Peterson. Both of the top riders were getting close in the rhythm section as the medic flag was posted. Peterson held onto the win ahead of Gilbert while Dretzka had a great ride in third. “I got a pretty good launch off the gate, in about fourth or fifth and then a guy went down in the rhythm section and I almost hit his bike. I just kept charging and wound up in third,” Dretzka said. “Lehr went down giving the lead to CYCLE USA, October 2009

Crevier. I then got into a battle with Ryan Gilbert and we came close a few times and then I just tried my hardest to stay ahead of him,” said first moto winner Peterson. In the second moto it was all Dretzka as he took the win well ahead of Peterson who barely edged out Dylan Koth at the finish line. Dretzka’s 3-1 netted him second overall while Gilbert went 2-DNF. Peterson had 1-2 tallies for the overall. “I started out in second and then I started doing the triple and got ahead,” said Dretzka.

“I kind of messed up early on, I went too far to the inside and I hit a big piece of scraped mud and that put me back a little, and I was just too far behind to catch Dretzka,” said Peterson. In the Women’s class, former WML rider, Pro-Action’s Kirsten Raemisch pulled the holeshot and was challenged early on by Ashley Densow and Brittany Lemke. Raemisch then put on a charge in the lead to move ahead of the pack by over twenty seconds at the end of the first lap. Raemisch led flag to flag for a romping first moto win.

If the first moto wasn’t enough, she stomped again in the second moto and even did the 100 foot leap over DeNoble’s Domain lap after lap. Raemisch will now have her name on a sign next to the jump stating that she’s the only woman rider to conquer the leap. “The start went good, it was a little sloppy and I wanted to get out front and I just put my head down and succeeded, and I rode a really good race, there were a lot of nice lines out there,” said Raemisch. “In the second moto, I really wanted to do that jump, so I clicked all the way down to first gear in the corner and just started to shift through the gears to hit the first double and then when I landed I hit fourth gear and just pinned it over the face and I cleared it all. It was kind of easy, but intimidating at the same time.” Raemisch said. Raemisch ended up taking the overall while Densow rode to a solid come from behind 2-2 for second overall. A good battle ensued between Stephanie Hinze and Brittany Lemke. Lemke got the nod with 3-5 tallies for third while Hinze had to settle for fifth overall with 4-6 scores behind Falen Narel. In 50Sr action, it was all Eddie Norred in both motos. The real race was between Carter Biese, Kadin Ahrndt and Bryce Hansen. Hansen got the second spot in the first moto while Biese settled for third. Ahrndt had some problems and dropped out with a sixth but came back in the second moto with a third, good enough for fourth overall. Norred won both motos while Biese went 3-2 for second overall. In the always tough Open B division, it was Joshua Philbrick getting the holeshot in the twenty-bike class. Philbrick had his hands full as CJ Greaves moved up alongside. Philbrick had it dialed in the sand and just seemed to be stronger through the rhythm sand infested areas. Philbrick got the win with Greaves second as Brennen Marshall rode to a solid third. In the second moto, it was Philbrick moving out to the front once again with Greaves in tow. Marshall Maas moved into third

over Cody Ciszewski, and MarCharging hard was shall. Greaves as he had a few chances to pull alongside Philbrick, but never make the move as Philbrick went on to take another moto win. Philbrick went 1-1 in the class and also topped the 250B division with back to back moto wins. “In the first moto I pulled the holeshot and I knew Greaves was in it and I didn’t know what to expect, he is such a good starter,” said Philbrick. “He was all over me on his 250F, and then I just sort of kicked it in while he faded a bit and I got the win. In the second moto, CJ got a better jump than me but I snuck into the lead and then we got into the lappers and I pulled him a bit. He rode a great race, and it was nice to get the win.” Another successful event for the MotoZone at Tigerton. Trojan host D15 State Series MX north Webster, Indiana - August 30 By Bobby Elkins Photos by Phyllis Blume

I

t really was lucky the rain stopped when it did Saturday night before the race, otherwise it would have been a real mess on race day. Come H-E-double hockey stix or high water the Reads had no intention of letting the weather dictate the layout. 20 motos were put in a gate order, many of which contained double drops. Sunday couldn't have come too soon for anyone I suppose. Sunday began a bit chilly for the spectators, but by the fourth moto the sun was out in full strength. The weekend included a mobile mammogram vehicle there to examine women who have been putting it off for too long. Scheduled also were Larissa and Tessa, two Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders there to do autograph signings and do a meet and greet. The Quad B were first to holeshot Round 2 of the State Championship. The moto began with a better than usual start for Sonny Nemitz of Warsaw, IN who had already captured a win at round one, just weeks earlier. He came out on this day with high expectations I'm sure. Nemitz came charging out of the gate with a great jump. Michael Schooley also of Warsaw got a nudge or two in the first turn and quickly throttled away from any nonsense while focusing in on Nemitz's rear axle. Landon Glass had the same idea as Schooley, to get away quickly. The rest of the field kept themselves busy protecting their lines and losing time over the leaders. Lap two proved to be more of the same but Glass was making a charge on Schooley for second. On lap three Schooley

succumbed from the attack of Glass who clearly was thinking farther ahead with Nemitz now in his sites. Schooley was now forced to deal with Dustin Stanley. Two Warsaw boys and two Alexandria boys. Something tells me these guys ride together and I would find out later they do. Nemitz held off a great late charge by Glass to win moto one. Schooley rode frantic to cross before Stanley, who finished just hundreds of a second behind Schooley. Moto two started with an explosive holeshot from Glass who rounded the first

few turns riding at break-neck speed. Glass didn't mind running a quickened pace. He seemed to be riding very excited, and using a faster tempo. Matthew Sanders intended on letting the others know he was done snoozing, and started in third ahead of Schooley, who was holding off Stanley again. On the third go round Stanley slipped around Schooley to take over fourth, but Schooley tried awfully hard to get that position back, twice. Once he got a brake checked and killed it, then on the final lap he plowed into a hay bail. Glass had his hands full with Nemitz,

Dakota Robins won six motos earning three overalls in yet another great day.

who never gave up. Those two had there own battle with over 150 yards separating the two groups. Sanders worked very hard and crossed in third giving him a 5-3 and third overall. Sanders fought off every attempt by Schooley to finish fourth. Glass took the win. Nemitz will have one more chance to claim victory and a State Race Championship. Glass rode 2-1 for first and Nemitz rode a 12 for second overall. The 65cc 7-9 and 10-11 classes were double dropped to begin the second race. The 10-11 group launched first. Austin Griffis of Ft Wayne, IN grabbed the early lead with Aden Merchant of Kokomo and Isaac Kopsho trailing. They had only rounded two turns to begin the race when Kraye Loft used the rockers to double past Kopsho for third. Then the gate dropped on the 7-9 group. Chandler Pitts took center stage followed by Braden Groves and Conner Brew. It wasn't long, only at the end of one in fact when Austin Griffis started running into traffic. That's very unusual considering the lap times were just over a 1:30 minutes for an adult B rider. Lap three is when things changed up in the 7-9. Pitts, who was battling to maintain his lead made a bobble in a loamy corner that allowed both Groves and Brew to slip around. Griffis was in another zip code when the checkers came out to take the win in the 10-11. Merchant crossed second without extending himself followed by Loft and Kopsho who rode to a respectable fourth. Groves crossed the stripe first in the 7-9. Brew was only a few seconds behind, followed by Pitts who never had time to put up a late charge. In moto two, Merchant took the holeshot

with Griffis second and Loft third. Merchant looked like a new rider to begin the race. Once they got thru the rockers, the gate dropped on the 7-9's. Brew got the jump on Groves and Pitts. It was exciting to see Brew leading a race. I know it probably surprised him also. Groves and Pitts were attacking him on both sides. These three 7-9 riders were making it a 3-way contest for the lead. Meanwhile the 1011's were keeping the spectators eyes glued on the lead pack. Out front, Merchant was defending his lead from Griffis, who was using every part of the track to attack him. Loft was alone in third, his only worry was Kopsho who seemed to be making time on him. Merchant never showed weakness, and crossed (2-1) to win round two with a very fast Griffis knockin' on the door in second. Loft rode to a 3-3 for third and Kopsho earned a fourth. In the 7-9, with Brew still was leading, Pitts made his move in front of the grandstands to get around Groves. After the grandstand section, the track reverses course leading into the rockers. Pitts swapped plastic with Brew and stalled. Groves eventually took the lead away from Brew on an uphill just before the end of three. As they approached the checkers at the end, Groves had to ride flat out to be scored first. Brew rode one of his best races ever and finished the race pushing Groves across the stripe.

The 250B gate showed eighteen riders prepared to go. Kyle Biggins of Spencerville, IN grabbed the holeshotin both motos and had to beat Nick Kersey back with a stick. Kersey sat right on Biggins rear fender waiting for something to happen. Biggins is what I like to call an under the helmet rider. He's smart! We're not talking common sense, more like he has a great understanding of what is going on around him. Biggins never faltered, and pulled a 1-1 for the win while Kersey gained 5 pounds from a soil sandwich he earned sticking so close to Biggins awarding him a 2-2 for second. Great racing guys! Austin Crouch struggled to a sixth place finish in his first moto but crossed the stripe third in moto two to finish third overall. Skyler Johnson put in a solid performance and scored a 5-4 for fourth overall and keeping Cady "The Lady" Pressler of Columbia City, IN at bay. Not an easy task indeed! Cady finished the day fifth overall. Cady did score 1-1 finishes in the Women 85-250cc class as would Madison Johnson who scored two moto wins in Women 65-85. Corey Kays raced bar to bar with Elijah Labordus from the gate drop in the 85cc 1215 class, and then thru the first corner. As they exited the horseshoe, Kays put the hammer down and reached the end of the section with enough space to be able to choose any line into the rockers we wished. They were being chased by Mason Brown and William Crossley. Nearing the end of the section it was clear they weren't going to pressure Kays was beginning to stretch a lead after just one with Labordus showing Brown and Crossley the fast way around the track. On the final lap Kays had stretched his lead to 120 yards. With only one to go Crossley really shot out of the horseshoe and was able to shoot around Brown for third, then Labordus stalled. Crossley came around him to jump to second. Labordus calmly found neutral and kicked it quickly. Through all the excitement Crossley

Koch cools Sandbox Short Track new Richmond, WI - Aug. 29 By Tim McBride

osh Koch piloted his Jeff’s S.O.S., Anderson Plumbing, General Engineering, Durelle Racing, 450 Honda to convincing victories in both the 450 and Open Semi-Pro divisions, during the Double District dirt track event held at the Sandbox Arena. Although Koch’s wins today were relatively uneventful, his progress in the pro class this season has had its ups and downs to be sure. “We had a good week in Daytona and made the main event at the Short Track National” explained Koch. “But I crashed at Peoria off the jump and banged myself up pretty good.” The good news is that the Koch’s efforts earned him a national number for 2010. “I hope I get my number 68,” said Koch, “but I’ll be happy with any number they give me.” It took four restarts to get the crash infested Open A main event underway, and after the dust settled it was D16’s Dustin Paul in just ahead of a hard charging Dave Shultz from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Paul returned for the 250A final and seemed to doing a pretty good job of holding off Cole Anderson until they encountered lapped traffic. Paul got tangled with a lapper and went down, allowing Anderson the victory. The 85cc class saw a classic come from behind charge from Wisconsin’s first little lady of racing Charlotte Kainz. Kainz started out in the fourth position and methodically clawed her

way into the lead by the halfway point. Fellow D16 racers Andrew Schleicher and Jacob Jesko finished a close second and third. Faith ferocious at Viking Clash Millville, Minnesota - August 30 By Rolfe Otterness

avin Faith took home the spoils of war ($$$) as the second annual Viking Clash brought back the glory of the Viking battles of past ages. Only this time out the warriors battled the relentless serpent called the Spring Creek Motocross Track! The track gobbled up a few riders as deep ruts formed in the corners, and pulled down the unwary and the weak. Faith was the most fortunate of the mighty A class riders, grasping victory in the 14-24 and Open classes as well as finishing second in the 250 division. going to be a threat as he powered into the early lead. Devin Reed dropped in behind him as did the Dehn brothers, John and Bruce. Carlson ran strongly out front and went on for the win with Reed hanging on for second. Jeremy Kress moved up to take third when both the Dehns dropped from contention. Faith was moving up after a poor start and crossed the line in fourth ahead of Jamie Ledin. Brandon Haas had a tough go of it in the first moto and ended up eleventh, but shot into the lead as the second moto started. He showed that he had the pace and led all the way to the checkered. John Dehn, Faith and Carlson got into a tight three-way battle for second early in the moto. Carlson managed to pass both Faith and Dehn and held on for second place which gave him the overall. Faith was pretty close for third with Dehn and Reed rounding out the top five. Carlson came off the line hard to charge into the lead of the first Open A moto with Faith, Haas and Trevor Tuma soon settling into pursuit. Carlson, Faith and Haas were running close as Faith managed to take charge at about midway into the moto. Haas also got by Carlson and it looked like Faith was about to take the moto as the white flag waved, but somewhere near the whoop section Faith dropped from a couple of seconds out front to a couple of seconds behind Haas and that was it. Haas held on to win. Carlson was not far

utch Fetters was the fastest rider at the King City Hill Climb on August 8th. He came from behind in the 600cc class to take that win and the Fast Time award. Jake Tackitt set the first round fast time at 3.225 seconds to take the lead into intermission. In the second round, Fetters flew his KX500 high over the top in a blistering 3.146 seconds to take the lead, and set a new Fast Time for the night. Tackitt responded with a 3.223 second run, but had to settle for third when Fetters’ brother in law, Matt Peters, put his Kawasaki over in 3.160 seconds to claim second. Peters enjoyed a double win evening, taking the wins in the 250cc and 450cc classes. His 3.246 second run on his first ride in the 250cc class held up all night, with Dylan Brady close behind with a 3.274 run. His 3.290 second first round ride on his KTM380 also held up all night in the 450 class, with Brian Klett second with a good 3.299 second time on his Yamaha 450. Reece Hutton, Joe McGurer, Paul Hillard and Mike Pulver were also double

class winners. Young Hutton got his wins in youth action, topping the hill in 8.061 seconds on his second ride to take a come from behind win over Braden Young who carded a first round 9.856 second time for the lead at intermission. Levi Peters also slipped under Young with a 8.684 second time. Hutton’s 6.996 second first round ride on his RM65 was good for the win in the 65cc class, with Peters again second. McGurer got his first win in the 85Sr class with a 3.852 second first round ride, a time which also earned him the Youth Fast Time award. Stephany Williams was second with a 4.454 second run. McGurer also claimed the win in the 125cc class. Hillard’s wins came in the 750cc and Two Stroke Quad classes. Riding his 750cc Kawasaki triple he delivered a 3.174 class winning time, with Andy Fortner, also triple mounted, claiming second. In the Two Stroke Quad class, he came from behind on his Banshee to overtake Evan Zimmerman with a 3.346 winning time. Pulver’s wins came in the Senior and Open Stock classes. He carded a 3.292 second time on his first ride in the Senior class, which held up for the win. Scott Petty, the District 15 Hill Climb Referee claimed the

second spot with a 3.349 second time. Pulver wrapped up his evening on his stock length CR500 with an outstanding 3.161 second time to win the Open Stock class, the third fastest time of the night. On Sunday, it was Andy Fortner who claimed the Fast Time award, as well as two wins. He had to come from behind in the 600cc class, as Jake Tackitt flew his Honda over the top to take the first round lead. In the second round both Fortner and Al Petty slipped under Tackitt. Fortner took the win with a blistering 3.013 second time, and Petty carded 3.086 seconds – the second fastest of the day. Tackitt’s time was third fastest. Fortner’s second win came in the 400cc Stock class, where he came from far behind. His first round ride on his Honda had him in fifth place at intermission, with Mike Pulver sitting on the lead with a good 3.396 second time. In the second round Fortner pinned his throttle, kept control and jumped over the top in a very good 3.196 seconds to take the win – the fifth fastest time of the day. Kyle Galloway posted a 3.279 second time for second. Joe McGurer, Paul Hillard and Mike Pulver were double class winners for the second straight day. McGurer again took the 85Sr and the Youth Fast Time award, as well as the 125cc class win. Hillard was the winner again in the 750cc and Two Stroke Quad classes. Pulver’s repeat wins came in the Senior and Open Stock classes. King City, continued on page 31

t was a night of Rs at the AMA Grand National Indy Mile, but the man named Coolbeth took top honors. Rainey, Roberts and Rossi were guests and honorees this August evening at the second running of the Lucas Oils Indy Mile and they provided a degree of entertainment few will see again. Former 500cc roadracing World Champion Wayne Rainey was in attendance for the “Class of ‘79” reunion which were the rookie AMA Grand National riders at the 1979 Indy Mile. Rainey, along with former AMA Grand National Champion Scott Parker, Ronnie Jones, Tommy Duma, Charlie Roberts and John Wincewicz received a great reception from the international crowd. Before the final event of the evening, another AMA and multiple 500cc World Champion came out of the pits astride the Yamaha

stands and photographers tripped over each other to get a shot of this famous duo back together again at Indy. Kenny got a bump start on the front straight and immediately stretched the throttle cables to the crowd’s delight. The sound was deafening but so sweet and brought back memories to many from so many years ago. Three laps around the Indy Mile were enough for Roberts, but the grin on his face showed how much he enjoyed riding the bike that after winning the race in ‘75 he said, “They don’t pay me enough to ride that thing”. When he stopped, he was immediately greeted by throngs of fans from the pits and current and nine time World Champion Valentino Rossi and Carruthers. Rossi was scheduled to ride the TZ, but after watching Roberts he decided not to mess with this machine. As for racing, the Indy Mile has always been a big race to win, but the venue now takes on extra meaning with the world press

The crowds are huge (est. 17,500) and putting on this all American show of mile flat track motorcycle racing is something special. Three time, and reigning AMA Grand National Champion, Kenny Coolbeth was not to be denied this evening. The factory Harley-Davidson racer took the lead on lap one and never relinquished that position, stretching it out to the finish. The dash for Cash was also a Coolbeth benefit ride as he won that and took over the series points lead. Fast qualifier on the evening and fastest heat race winner was Bryan Smith aboard his Screaming Eagle HarleyDavidson/ Moroney’s H-D XR750. Smith scorched the track with a 38.242 second time, over a half second faster than second place qualifier Joe Kopp. The start of the 25 lap final event was marred by a serious crash in turn one. The race was red-flagged and restarted after

the melee was cleaned up and riders tended to. The four riders involved , Jethro Halbery, Shaun Russell, Henry Wiles and Brandon Robinson tangled in turn one and Robinson was thrown over the outside wall and into a parking area along with his bike. Robinson received serious injuries to his hip and had surgery Sunday morning. Mees led the restart only to be passed by Coolbeth on the front straight. The first few laps saw a good battle between Coolbeth, Mees, Smith, Chris Carr and Jake Johnson. Coolbeth got going by the end of lap three and made a break from the pack. Mees and Smith put on a good race for second. Carr and Johnson fell back and were challenged by Sammy Halbert, but only to lap twenty when Halbert put his bike on the ground. Walnut, Illinois - September 13th By Missi Thede

R

iders who attended the Sunset Ridge Sept.13th motocross experienced a beautiful day. Just enough sun, temps reaching the lower 80’s, and a nice consistent breeze. Perfect for great day, especially considering the conditions at the last race in August which rained out the second moto. With everyone pumped and ready to go, it was an absolutely awesome day of aggressive racing and exciting class turnouts. Illinois’ Jason Kloptowsky just edged out the holeshot in the first moto of the +30A class with Iowa’s Junior Jackson and Burton Lavens in hot pursuit. Jackson moved up to lead, letting Kloptowsky and Lavens battled it out for second. Tim Filippi and Josh Gray kept their Yamahas in fourth and fifth positions. Jackson not letting up, pushed his distance over Kloptowsky while Lavens was looking for a way into second right u to the finish. Kloptowsky took the early lead again in the second moto with Jackson on his heels trying to make up time as Lavens pushed in third. Jackson didn’t ease up on Kloptowsky

Joseph Ahern (#174 ) battled with Shaun Staunton (#247) and Brandon Simes in the 250c moto.

- the pressure was on until the final lap. Kloptowsky held on for the win and overall ahead of Jackson, Lavens and Gray. Double gated with the 30A riders, eleven +45 riders shot off the line with Illinois’ Rick Grebner on his RTR KTM taking the holeshot with Scott Lindahl and Michael Gowe on his rear wheel. With Grebner maintaining his lead on the second lap, TJ Hofmeister pushed his way into second as David Benson climbed up into third. Grebner 250c class winner Reid Janson. maintained his lead while Benson pushed Grebner had a repeat show in the sechis way into second position finishing the ond moto, and held his lead persistently race with Hofmeister third and Lindahl throughout the race with Benson on his heels fourth. ahead of Hofmeister. David Thomas moved into fourth and kept Gowe behind. Grebner took the win and overall. With thirty-five 250C riders at the gate, everyone was holding their breath on this start. Just missing out on a first turn crash, Joseph Ahern and Reid Janson pulled the holeshot with Dakota Cox right there as well. Janson had a clean lead by the second lap with Cox and Drew Wallace in pursuit. Ahern had his hands full with Shaun Staunton and Brandon Simes. Wallace pushed his way past Cox in the third lap, then Cox had Simes push him back another spot. Simes aggressively passed his way into second place. Finishing the race was Janson with the win ahead of Simes, Wallace, Ahern and Staunton. With a surprise first lap of the second moto, Cox led Janson into the back section with Staunton and Greg Sassi in dire pursuit. Simes had his work cut out for him again

this moto to get to caught up to his first moto finish. Janson made it into the lead with Staunton back in second as Sassi and Cox battled side by side during the second lap. Simes was making persistant placement moves. Simes made headway aggressively back into second late in the moto while Janson took another win. Staunton finished third, Wallace finished fifth, but it was good for fourth overall ahead of Sassi (7-4). With 13 Quad A riders on the line, it was bound to be a fun race to see. Justin Medine grabbed the holeshot with Jason Wehrli and Charlie Snow hot on his rear fender. Wehrli had bike issues (broken frame) during the first lap and was out the rest of the race. Snow had the lead to start the second lap with Stephen Schenk taking the inside corners to gain some ground on him as Medine was back to third. Battling for fourth were Kody Kropp and Ethan Pickard, with Pickard keeping that throttle pinned. Schenk pulled ahead of Snow in the third lap, as Pickard moved up to fourth. With Pickard racing aggressively, he moved up to third, and then put the heat on Snow. Last lap, Pickard made his move to pass Snow, then go after Schenk. With Schenk taking the outside berm before the triple downhill, Snow edged his way past Pickard. With the pressure on, Pickard made it past Snow and Schenk and finished first with Schenk and Snow following. Second moto found Schenk and Snow over the downhill triple first with Pickard in third, right on Snow. Pickard and Snow battled with Medine staying consistent in fourth position

Great Competition at Atwater Atwater, Wisconsin - August 22 By Hannah Lange Photos by Donna Reinhardt

T

he Atwater ST started out Saturday evening with a cool breeze and no rain was expected to show that night. The track was groomed in between the races but rugged clay and dirt in turns one and two caused several crashes. There was a favorable turnout of riders in each class. The hill was also filled with cheering race fans with plenty of laughing children playing football and running around before the races got started. The 4-Stroke Quad class was a joy to watch with these competitive contenders. Out in front leading the way was Matt Schmitz, followed by Chad Jesko. Jesko wasted no time and overtook holeshot starter Schmitz in lap one. Chasing Jesko was an aggressive Cory Mahlum. Jesko was looking back at various times to see his extended lead to score his powerful win. Then came the Senior and Super Senior classes, combined for the evening. This very competitive race was accident free. The early race leader was Jack Kainz of the Senior class. Pressuring Kainz was Marvin Wollschlager and Ronald Bean. Stealing the lead and bumping Kainz back to third was Bean. After a few laps everyone held their positions. Coming into lap traffic at the finish line, Bean took the checkered flag for the Super Seniors while Wollschlager took the victory for the Seniors. The 65cc 7-11 year old classs brought seven riders to the line. Jacob Jesko was the front-runner, but following right behind was Parker Lange. Lange was working hard to catch-up to Jesko but just didn’t have quite enough this night. The top three impressive riders of Jesko, Lange, and Sam Wolf spread out ahead of the pack. Battling it out for their positions were Max Mayer and Keegan Hartgerink. Holding him off, Mayer took the fourth spot over Hartgerink. Riding his Suzuki to victory was Jesko. Seniors hit Aztalan wide open Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 12 By Dave Hollub

T

his year started a new tradition at the RacerX senior series stop at Aztalan Cycle Club with the race now being renamed the Mike Gaborsky Dirty Old Blasters Senior Race. Mike Gaborsky was remembered with a moment of silence to reflect on his commitment and influence to the District 16 motocross scene over more than 40 years. Gaborsky was a valued asset to the club and his passing in 2005 touched everyone who had ever raced at Aztalan since the club’s beginnings in the early 70’s. As Mike would have wanted, the time for mourning was quickly replaced with fast paced racing as the +25 Expert class hit the starting gates. James Povolny Jr. was the first rider of the day to round the holeshot corner narrowly edging out David Smage. Povolny set about distancing himself from the pack while Ben Graves took over second place. Justin Kandler, making a return to motocross after several years off, was running fourth but soon had pressure from Greg Hochmuth. By the beginning of the third lap Hochmuth had moved up to fourth and was now chasing Smage. Hochmuth continued his charge and got by Smage on lap four. Graves then had his hands full fighting off Hochmuth for the final two laps, but held on for second. Povolny powered his Kawasaki to the holeshot again in moto two, this time with not only Graves pressuring from the inside but

Daniel Glowacki races his 1981 Husqvarna cR430 which was originally owned by Mike Gaborsky.

also Hochmuth on the outside. The third time over the plateau saw Graves in second, Hochmuth third and Kandler fourth, all in the air at the same time. The battle stayed fierce with Hochmuth finally grabbing second on lap four. Povolny took the overall with a double moto win while Hochmuth (3/2) was second and Graves (2/3) third. Walking through the pits I stumbled onto a group calling themselves the Mammoth Hunters and I saw a collection of bikes that could have passed as museum pieces. Fortunately the Mammoth Hunters are dedicated to keeping the thrill of racing the bikes of their youth years alive for all of us to see, and when the Dual Shock class hit the track their pit space was void of any bikes. Once the Dual Shock class got their first gate drop it was Gary Behrens that out sprinted everyone to the first corner and he never looked back, leading to the checkers on his 1976 RM 370. Brian Martens was right on Behrens’ rear tire around the corner and settled into second while Donald Wennlund was running third on his Maico. On lap three Wennlund started to feel pressure from David Kratzke and on the next time over the plateau Kratzke had taken third. Doug Herbst slipped in behind Kratzke and on lap four in the west end took over third when Kratzke fell back into the back of the pack. In moto two it was Behrens taking a big holeshot and once again he was out front for the remainder of the moto. Martens once again was running second and this time Jim Leach had his Suzuki in third. Herbst crept up on Leach and on lap two slipped by to take over third. Behrens took the overall with his 1/1 moto finishes with Martens (2/2) second and Herbst (3/3) finishing up the top three. Behrens later talked about his bike and day, “My bike is a 1976 RM 370 Suzuki. The Michael Hall was ninth overall in +25 Expert.

memories are better than the actual ride on the track. It really was good, the track was good, and the bike ran well. The later the races are it will be a different story though. That big RM horsepower grabbed the holeshot. I race the old RM once a year; I bring it down here, other than that it sits. Mary and I bought it about a year ago alongside the road for $75. I patched it up enough to make it go and have been riding it ever since. I stalled my bike (a modern era Honda) in the +50 class and was as far back as 44th and I worked my way up to eleventh. I just got here after moto two and I think I got top ten. It was a good race. I’ll

absolutely be back next year; I have been coming here now for five or six years.” The +25 Women were next out and it was Kirsten Raemisch taking the holeshot with Jolene Graves in second. Nicole Degrand was running third and fighting off the challenges from Dawn Cox. By the second trip over the plateau Cox had made a pass on Degrand and settled into third to the checkers. Moto two once again had the holeshot go to

Raemisch but on the first trip over the plateau it was Graves out front and Cox in third. Graves held on to the lead for the next lap but on lap three Raemisch took it away in the west end of the track. Raemisch (1/1) was the overall winner. The +30B holeshot in moto one was so close between Julian Lapointe and Andy Heinecke that from my angle I couldn’t call it. By the time everyone came over the plateau on lap one Dwight Ingalls had squeezed between Lapointe and Heinecke. On lap two Paul Harding made his move and passed Heinecke for third. Lapointe was soon seeing a tire from Ingalls in the corners, and on lap three Ingalls slipped by. Ingalls was able to hold onto the lead to the checkers for the moto win. Ingalls grabbed the moto two holeshot ahead of Brenan Clark. Matt Hansford found the extra power to jump from sixth into fourth the first trip over the plateau and he immediately set about hunting down third place from Harding. Near the end of lap one Hansford was running in third. Lap four saw Harding building up a head of steam and soon he had passed both Hansford and Clark to grab second to the flag. Ingalls (1/1) was on top of the podium while Harding (3/2) and Hansford (5/3) filled the other steps. The surprise of the day was not that +50 was full of fast riders, but that it was filled out with “44” of them. Frank Dunn proved to be the fastest to the holeshot in moto one and as he hit the plateau on lap one he was still out front with Michael Gilleran and Tim Boblin right behind. Lonny Brown was threatening Boblin’s grasp on third and by the end of the lap it was Brown in third. Dunn had his work cut out as he had to counter constant pressure from Gilleran all the way to the finish for the next four laps. The moto two holeshot saw Dunn back in fifth while Gilleran and Boblin rounded the corner almost side by side. Dunn managed to work his way into fourth but the real battle was between Gilleran and Brown for the lead. Boblin was positioned in third and stayed

Jolene Graves was second overall in +25 Women.

close, but both leaders held on to the finish. The overall went to Gilleran (2/1), Brown (3/2) was second and Dunn (1/4) took third. After working through the rain soaked tracks at Millville and Redbud earlier this summer everyone was happy to see the cloudless skies and warm temperatures here at the series third stop. The final race of the series is scheduled for Motorsports Park on October 4th where the series champions will be decided. Today was fitting to the memory of Gaborsky as everyone enjoyed a day full of fast paced, but very clean racing. I’m sure Mike was smiling as he enjoyed the show from above.

The “Bach-Star” rocks Midway Mitchell, Indiana - August 22 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck

T

he third round of the Southern Indiana Series Championship of 2009 was held at the Midway MX Park in Mitchell, Indiana. The weather was perfect as was the track conditions. The PeeWee race was filled with close racing throughout. Joshua Pyne led the first lap followed by Garrett Russel, Tanner Guerrettaz, Langdon Feltner. Pyne and Feltner pulled away from the pack and swapped the lead several times before Feltner eventually took the checker with a mere five second lead. Jacob Stark arrived for the race focused on continuing his win streak in the PeeWee Injector class. His intense focus overpowered his vision near home check. Stark missed a hard turn resulting in him being “close lined” by a banner. Stark was able to recover and track down

Louden Feltner on the third lap and land another victory. The mini race started with the traditional three rows consisting of the Super Mini, 85cc and the 65cc classes. The Super mini riders headed into the woods with the intention of holding off the charge of the 85cc riders. This was sure to be a difficult task considering it has yet to be accomplished in the two years of having the class in D15. Clay Sullivan set the pace in Super mini. Taylor Day was leading the 85cc charge followed by Keagen Lee, Luke Chilman and Austin Lee. Day suffered a flat tire ending his hopes of the win, allowing for an tyler Vore and Austin Lee intense battle between fighting for the holeshot in the 85cc class. Keagen Lee and Chilman with Austin Lee hanging in there waiting on them to bobble. Chilman was able to hold off Keagen Lee for the victory by 0:03. While Chilman won the overall by adjusted times, Clay Sullivan was the first Super mini rider to successfully hold off the charge of the 85cc riders and come through the score tent ahead of Chilman by two seconds. While the race for the overall was being sorted out, the 65cc class had two separate battles unfolding. Michael Witkowski had remained unbeaten throughout 2009, but Jacob Pyne had plans to change that. Pyne led the first two laps, but Witkowski turned up the heat on the third and final lap landing the win by 0:19. While Eric Douglass had a solid hold on third, fourth through seventh were racing wheel to wheel with Vincent Smith, Dawson Dunnuck, Tate Guerrettaz and Cory Jordan taking turns leading through various sections of the track. In the end, Smith and Dunnuck edged out Guerrettaz

and Jordan to round out the top five. Due to the event being held on a Saturday, the overall turnout was a little low with only sixty entries in the big bike event. While the turnout was down, the perfect weather along with the Kawasaki contingency brought a front row which was loaded with some of the top talent. The ‘08 and ‘09 Mid-South Winter Series Champions, Jeff Cregg and Jordan Ashburn were among the riders looking for the victory. Current GNCC riders, Jake Fiddler and Christopher Bach as well as top D15 racers Nathan Sullivan and Jordon Johns also lined up with high hopes. Christopher Bach set the pace early in the race, leading the pack through the checkpoint on the first lap with a 18:15 lap time. Jordan Ashburn was next through with Cregg, Fiddler and Daniel Sims filling out the top five. We had a new leader at the end of lap two, with Ashburn taking the lead away from Bach. Fiddler was up to third with

Cregg now in fourth. Encouraged by information on his pit board, Sims was in fifth. Cregg suffered a crash during the third lap resulting in an injury to his thumb and leg allowing Sims to take over fourth with Zachary Nash moving into the top five. Somewhere on the course during lap four, Bach took over the lead. Ashburn remained on Bach’s rear wheel. The white flag was given and Bach still had the lead, continuing to set the pace. There was no doubt that we had us a race - as Ashburn was clearly looking to pass first place, Nash had fallen back and Jordan Johns had moved into fifth. Bach was successful at holding off Ashburn for the coveted victory. Fiddler maintained his position on the final lap, but Sims was not so lucky. Johns passed Sims for fourth place on the final lap. Temperatures in the high 70’s and a slightly overcast sky, you couldn’t ask for a more perfect day for racing in the Midwest. With the 2009 series requiring all riders attend all of the Iowa AMA Motocross facilities to qualify for year-end awards, there were people from all over the state in attendance. One of the more exciting classes on this day was the +30A/ +30B/C combined group. With A riders like Robert Palmer, Tom Underwood, Chad Chyma and Chauncey Cox on the line, you just knew you were in for some great racing. Plus the added excitement of the B/C riders being out on the track putting on a show of their own, how could you lose? When the riders left the line, Chad Chyma was able to hug the inside and keep the gas on the longest for the all important start. Palmer, Cox and Underwood were not far behind. Troy Pflughaupt also got an excellent start and was out in front of the pack of B/C riders. Chyma did his best to stay out front, being challenged by Palmer. As the two entered the sand section, Palmer managed to stay on the throttle a littler to take over the lead. Underwood was just behind Chyma and looked to have the speed to take over second as the riders started lap two. Cox, who had fallen early in the first lap, came across the line in sixth, doing his best to catch Jim Johnson and Paul Chyma, who were in fourth and five respectively. Paul Chyma was able to jump past Johnson and out brake him in the next corner to take over fourth place. Cox was next to take a run at Johnson, but needed to take advantage of a slight bobble in the wooded section by Johnson to make his pass. The remaining laps were exciting as the A riders starting to distance themselves from the B/C riders. Chyma made a run at Palmer on the last lap, but came up about a second short at the checkered flag. Underwood held on for third as Cox used his sand experience to best Paul Chyma for fourth. Moto two may have had the same top five results, but you never would have guessed that from the drop of the gate. Chad Chyma was once again able to put down a near perfect start, only this time he immediately pulled away from Palmer and the rest of the field. Palmer had to deal with Cox, who was riding much smoother in the second moto after getting his bad luck out of the way in the first. As the pack flew over the finish line 42

table-top for the first time, Chyma was out front with Palmer less than a second behind. Cox and Underwood were next across the line. Paul Chyma had moved into fifth, closing in on the top four as he sailed over the table-top and past the scorers. Palmer got along side Chad Chyma a couple of times in lap two, but just couldn’t make a pass stick. Underwood put a clean pass on Cox early in lap two and set his sights on the leaders. Paul Chyma took advantage of a near get off by Cox in the wooded section and emerged in fourth place. Chad Chyma seemed to have everything under control from the way the first three laps had gone. But as Palmer worked his way through the whoops at the start of the final lap, it was clear that he was going to do whatever he could to come away with the day’s win. Palmer did not disappoint and was finally able to get by Chyma in the off-camber section by using a line that few had tried all day. At the checkered flag it was Palmer with the well deserved

win. Chyma crossed the line in a strong second place. Underwood was next. Cox and Paul Chyma rounded out the top five. Ron Cooney was able to take the win in the +30B/C with his 2-1 score. Kurt Ness went 1-2 for the day for second place. Pflughaupt, Doug Rothfus and Jason Byers rounded out the top five. Thanks to the Riverside Raceway crew for an excellent day of racing for all! Midwest Shootout Series draws for Tri-City coal Valley, Illinois - August 23 By Michael Sierens

R

ound three of the Midwest Shootout Series was held at the Tri-City Motorcycle Club grounds in Coal Valley, IL. The series consists of four tracks located within an hour drive from each other. Muddy Water Motorsports Park in East Moline, Sunset Ridge in Walnut and the Galesburg Motorcycle Club all came together for the new series. A larger than normal turnout of 285+ entries was a welcome sign for the club who put a lot of work getting the track prepared for the race. Sixteen riders took the gate drop in the opening moto of the 65Jr class, and Chase Sexton wasted no time putting a gap on the field. Anthony Wallace and Tanner Chada were side by side through the whoop section as the rest of the pack followed into the woods and the back section. It was more of the same for Sexton in the second moto. Sexton easily grabbed the holeshot and led Wallace, Chada and Jacob Lancaster. Chada made a quick pass into the second just after the whoops, dropping Wallace back to third. Sexton was in total checkout mode and put a five second gap over Chada in the first lap. The field was running all alone for the remainder of the moto. Picking up an easy win was Sexton with Chada in second and Wallace third. In the +30A race, Tri-City saw the return of local former Pro rider Junior Jackson. Jackson has been a regular here at Tri-City in the past but it has been a number of years

the start of the 250c class is always exciting!

the whoops. Dalzell moved out to the lead since he put in competitive laps on the track. and put a small gap on the rest of the pack A great jump off the gate saw Jackson on his over the next few laps. Garrett went down KTM with the holeshot, just edging out Josh and dropped back to fourth place on lap four. Pistole, Theron Maring and Jason KlopGarrett didn’t give up, and put a charge on towsky back in fourth. Jackson led the riders after David Wilson on his Kawasaki, and around the tricky course for the opening lap made the pass for third place on the last lap. with a good pace. He held a three second lead over Pistole with Maring pressing for the number two spot. Over the next two laps, Jackson continued to pull away from the pack while Kloptowsky was now pushing Maring for third. The pressure paid off as Kloptowsky made the pass on the final lap to finish third. Jackson again grabbed the holeshot for moto number two. Behind was Kloptowsky, Pistole and Maring. Pistole went hard on the gas through the whoops, bouncing off the track only to keep it pinned to the face of the next jump, allowing him to pull back around Kloptowsky. Jackson moved out to a six second lead. Pistole, Kloptowsky and Maring were tightly bunched together and locked in a great battle for second place. Kloptowsky pulled alongside of Pistole on lap number three as the two entered the whoop section. Pistole held off the hard charger but Kloptowsky kept showing Pistole the front wheel through every corner. Jackson took another easy win. Kloptowsky tried one last time in the last corner and up the hill towards the finish line but came up one bike length short of second place. Schoolboy had some great racing. Joseph Dalzell, Thomas Garret and Zack Scott were side by side entering the first turn Ryder Schnowske and down the small rhythm section towards charging on his KtM.

Up front Dalzell took the win followed by Scott. Dalzell grabbed the holeshot to start moto two. Behind him was Garrett, Scott, Wilson and Evan Toland. Over the next couple of laps, the first three riders checked out from the rest of the pack. On lap three bad luck struck Garrett again as he went off the track in the back bowl corner. Leading this moto wire-to-wire and taking both moto wins was Dalzell. Scott finished with 2-2 moto scores and Wilson had 3-3 moto results. Chris Nodurft grabbed the holeshot in the opening moto of the +30B class followed by Todd Kollar and Brent Stewart. Tri-City’s President Dave Genung got a poor start and was sixth on the opening lap. Kelby Trowbridge was quickly working himself through the pack after he jumped the start and hit the gate. Trowbridge moved into second halfway through the opening lap, and by the end of lap two picked up the lead. Nodurft attempted to make the quick pass back by shoving his wheel inside of a tight left hander and stalled his Suzuki. Once out front, Trowbridge increased his lead over the rest of the pack and picked up moto one easily. The second moto saw a few guys electing not to start the race. Todd Kollar, Eric Lawson and Chris Nodurft who were in a battle for the lead in the first moto all chose to sit out the second moto. Trowbridge took advantage of the smaller field and grabbed the early lead with Stewart back in second and Genung third. Stewart tried to make the early pass but Trowbridge grabbed a handful of

throttle and pulled away. Genung was able to make the move by Stewart to take second place with Stewart finished third. Denmark Ends Season Strong Denmark, Wisconsin - August 23 By Pete Emme

D

enmark Sports and Competition ended their 2009 season on a strong note with over 250 entries and much improved track conditions. A decent turnout the day before for open practice was a good sign for things to come. The weather looked eerie early in the morning Sunday as cool temperatures moved in along with some fog, but the sun peaked out as the first race kicked off, and it turned into a beautiful day as temps hovered around 70. Long-time District 16 runner Aaron Stroebel had a fantastic day at Denmark as he got an overall win in the +25A division. The first moto kicked off with Chris Junkans moving out to the lead with Stroebel second. Junkans, who knows the track well, was blitzing out some good laps until Stroebel kicked it up a notch making up some ground in the whoops that were recently constructed. Going into the final lap, Junkans had a five bike length lead and Stroebel reeled the Honda rider in as the white flag flew. Stroebel, much to his excitement, got on the gas hard for the final lap and drew some distance between himself and Junkans to get the first moto win. Rounding out the top five were Craig Wallace, Matt Mraz and Brandon Duchow. “On the start, I got an okay start,” said Stroebel. “I worked around Mraz and Duchow and then a lap later I saw Chris Junkans in the lead and I was determined to catch and pass him. I made up some time in the whoops, I felt that I was better through there and that allowed me to catch him and then I made the pass coming down the finish line hill.” Duchow made the second moto holeshot all his as he pulled the pack through the first corner with Matt Mraz in second. Mraz had some motor problems in the first moto and was looking to run up front this time. Stroebel came from fourth and was on the heels of Mraz and Duchow as they entered the whoops. Like the first moto, Stroebel held it pinned on the outside in the whoops and made the pass for the lead. Duchow ended up on the ground 46

as he slid out later in the moto. Stroebel took the win and overall while Mraz held a tight second for second overall with a 4-2 tally. Wallace finished in third with consistent 3-3 scores. In the 125Jr class it was Cameron Cochran on a Suzuki taking the nice holeshot, closely followed by Levi Truttmann and Jake Vaness. Truttmann took over the lead early on and then overtaken by Vaness on the third lap. Usual front-runner Brandon Clifford had troubles with his bike. Vaness held on for the win with Truttmann second and Alex Williams third. “I was swapping through some ruts and had some trouble early on and fell back to fourth, we’ll see what happens in the next moto if I can put something together,” said Cochran who finihsed fourth. The second moto was all

Cochran as he took the win. It was impressive, but not enough to give him the overall as he had to settle for second. Vaness had consistent tallies of 1-2 for the win while Truttmann went 2-5 for third. Jesse Koth had a strong start for the first moto of 250A as he led the pack into the one of the fastest straightaways in Wisconsin. He was followed by Dustin Pulley and Bradley Behrens, all on Yamahas. Pulley battled with Behrens as they both got around Koth going into the second lap. Behrens wound up in the lead, but it was short lived as Pulley took over the point. Matt Maier suffered a mediocre start but found his way through the dirt to move into the third spot behind Brandon Crevier. Pulley took the win just a ways ahead of Crevier and Maier. Pulley backed up his win

with another in the second moto while Maier went 3-2 for second overall. Crevier went 23 for third overall as Behrens went 4-4 for fourth. Pulley also went on to win the Open A class, and led start to finish a wide following holeshot against the dirt wall on the outside. Pulley went 1-1, his fourth moto win on the day. Maier had troubles in the first moto going down hard at the end of the whoop section. He did recover to finish fourth overall (7-2). Taking second overall was Dylan Koth with 25 scores just ahead of his brother Jesse, having finished 4-4. Joshua McCole got the nod in the opening moto of 250B as he got into the lead passing Kyle Sharkey on a KTM. McCole was smooth early and held a nice lead. Dale Kotthan was on the move through the tough pack of 250s, finding himself in second, and actually reeling in McCole. On the final lap, Kotthan had second wrapped up until his bike locked up on the final downhill before the finish line as McCole took the checkers. Kotthan went from second to sixteenth with only 100 feet of track remaining, an unfortunate situation for the young Kawasaki rider to exhaust all of his fine efforts. “I got a good start, from there I ran a decent race and then I saw #420 coming and then I stalled my bike in the back corner but I got it going and led the way to the finish,” said 250B winner McCole. “The first moto I tried as hard as I could and then I came over the double leading to the finish line and something happened to my bike, it just locked up and came to a stop,” said Kotthan. “I thought it was a chain or something, but we looked it over and we’re going to come out here

and get a win in the second moto,” Kotthan said. Damien Stillman rode his Kawasaki to the lead in the final moto of 250B with Kotthan starting from the outside. McCole sat in the fifth spot, but moved into second by the end of the moto. So true to his words, Kotthan got into the lead and was clearly the fastest rider in the class. “I got the kind of start I wanted and then I just worked my way into the lead and took it from there,” said Kotthan. ished third. The second moto again saw the two leaders slowly pull away from the pack. This time out, Cody Louder finished third ahead of Maupin. Alex Nagy took the 85Sr holeshot and never looked back. Jordan Mackiewicz started in second, then before the end of the first lap had fallen back to fifth. Shane Cobb took over second ahead of Maximillian Richter. Mackiewicz was on a mission, and by the end of the third lap he pulled it all together, and made his way back into second for the final running order. Payden Lingle rode really well, winning the Quad 90cc class.

ith a good chance of thunderstorms in the forecast, and rain falling all around the Byron, IL facility, Aaron Vincer and his team worked a little harder than normal to make sure everything got rolling quickly in the morning. Immediately following practice, racing kicked off on both the Legacy, and the newer Hilltop tracks. The rush was on to beat the storms, and even though a little light rain did fall during the day for a few minutes, it all turned out just fine, and we had another big day of racing. Patrick Stetz led the Quad C class out in the first moto, with some equally fast riders behind. Nicholas Sergi was first to make a move taking over the lead in the first lap as Nicholas Glod was running third, and now all over Stetz. Half a lap later, Glod also made a pass, taking over second. The two leaders held their own until the end. Jim Clingingsmith passed into third late in the moto as Stetz finished fourth. Clingingsmith turned the tables in moto two, taking the win ahead of Sergi. Clingingsmith’s 3-1 finishes were good for second overall behind Sergi’s 1-2. Glod finished third in the moto, and overall. Over on the Legacy track, the 14-24 riders got the show started, and Adam Tarara was unstoppable on his Kawasaki. Trevin Simes tried to keep him in sight, and he did, but never close enough to challenge for the lead. Stefan Maupin fin- Stefan Maupin and cody Louder in the 14-24 class.

CYCLE USA, October 2009

Jason Mack and Stuart Schwagerman ran 1-2 all the way through the first 85Jr moto. Wisconsin’s Cody Graham was having a good ride were he worked up to third early, then dropped out not able to finish. Brandon Allen re-took third, finishing just ahead of Jarred Berggren. In both of the 85cc classes the top five riders started and finished in the same positions as they had in the first moto. Nagy and Mack both winning with clear cut back-toback moto wins.

Todd White led off the start in the +50 class, but going into the second lap was passed by David Thomas through a small mudhole that had developed before the uphill. White wasn’t giving up, and came right back in the same lap. As they hit the step-up double, White jumped past Thomas and back into the lead. William Ziesk came on strong in the final laps to push Thomas as they finished 1-2-3. Someone lit a fire under Ziesk in the second moto. White took the point off the start, but ended the moto in second as Ziesk (3-1) stoled the win. White still earned the overall with his 1-2 motos. Thomas Dretzka led the +40 class all the way to the end in moto one. Chris Grosskreuz finished second ahead of his travel partner Michael Namowicz. Scott Rhoton took the second moto holeshot ahead of Dretzka, but it only took Dretzka a little while to work around and then lead to the finish. Rhoton slipped back to fourth as Namowicz moved ahead to finish second in front of Grosskreuz. Dretzka also won the +45 and +30A classes with across the board first place finishes, a six moto sweep on the day. West Chicago, IL’s Anthony Wallace took both moto wins in the 65Jr class for an impressive overall. Jarred Berggren and Austin Macias finished second and third in each moto to round out the top three overall. Berggren ran into problems in the first moto going down, having to re-start, but managed to work up by the end. After a moto long battle in both outings... Jason Mack got the 65Sr win in front of Stuart Schwagerman. The two swapped spots several times.

Cameron Lansing and Derek Whitney have been riding together long enough to make it fun, while still giving it their all being competitive. In 250A they took turns leading through the first lap, hollering at each other all the way. Whitney took the lead to start the second lap with Lansing now following. Lansing was hard on the gas when he caught a rut and hit the ground hard. Tough as he is, with a little help getting his shoulder back in place (yea... it had to hurt) he finished the last lap to get whatever points he could salvage. Ty Tyrrell finished second ahead of Justin Hager. Whitney had an easier time in the second moto to take the win as Tyrrell again finished second. Winning has been a pretty common feeling for Nicholas Latour this season in the B classes. Today, in 250B he shot to the front off the start and inched away once again. Ricki Williams was running second early before sliding back to fifth. Josh Ellingson ran in third. Working up in the first couple laps, Thomas Garrett came from fifth up to second. Nick Abraham also moved up late to finish third ahead of Ellingson. Latour took another win in the second moto, again ahead of Garrett and Abraham. Williams got the better of Ellingson for fourth and fourth overall. Latour also went 1-1 in the Open B class. The day’s two wins put yet another stamp of a great season in the books for Latour as he was wrapped up the B class Nuke Championship for 2009. With twenty-plus riders on the line, 250C was the largest class of the day. Greg Sassi was fastest off the line taking the holeshot on his Yamaha. Brandon Simes was second with Colt Bue, Cameron Cochran, and Matt Hefel filling the top five through the first couple corners. Before Sassi had a chance to get away, Simes tucked under in the back section and grabbed the lead. Sassi stuck close as long as he could, but the win was in Simes control, and he held tight to the checkers. Bue fell back as the moto wore on, Cochran ran well to finish third ahead of James Hermes. Hefel finished fifth. Sassi grabbed the second moto holeshot while Simes was in third behind Cochran. Jeremy Barone was fourth with Bue fifth. Cochran dropped out. Hermes worked his way up to third as Hefel took over fourth when Bue tagged a barrel at the step-up jump. Sassi pulled away with each lap as Simes ran in second, seeing his shot at the overall slip away. Sassi finished comfortably in the lead for the win and overall. The day ended early after yet another well ran Nuke event beat out all the threats of rain. Running a smooth program that starts later in the morning, has two tracks run separate programs, and still finishing mid-afternoon has become a trademark for Motosports Park.

We caught up with Derek Witney after he won his second moto of the day, in the Open A class. “The day is going really good so far. Got the holeshot in this Open A moto and then went for the win. I had to play catch-up a little with Cameron Lansing in 250A before I won that one. The series is going good... the Nuke Series is great and I’ve been here every race. I’m leading the points, and they have a huge purse. I think first is worth $2250, and after today I may have it wrapped up. I’d really like to thank Port Yamaha, SF Performance, No Fear, DeCal Works and everyone helping make this happen.” Whitney went on to take the two A class overalls, and put a lock on winning the A class Nuke Championship... congratulations Derek. Summer wrapping-up at South Fork taylorville, Illinois - August 30 By James Pinckard

T

he summer is over and to the great joy of kids they are on their way back to school (right). Leroy at South Fork Dirt Riders said “I want to do something special fot the kids being they are going back to school and help out the parents save a little money so this week the 50cc classes get to race for half price and all kids get to eat lunch for free.” As a fan of motocross we all tend to look and watch the A or expert riders, if nothing else because they are as fast as they are. For all of those who race, you picture yourself riding the same way. Doesn’t matter if you are racing in front of the pack as long as you have some one to race and ride with, it if feels like you are tearing up the world. The fact is to become an A rider you have to start somewhere and for school age kids it seems the 85Jr class is where many get their beginning sometimes in the D class. This isn’t an AMA class, but many tracks offer it to riders that are new to our sport and want to safely develop their moto skills. In the 85JR class, full of free hotdogs and ready for some fun when the gate dropped for the first moto Suzuki rider Gaige Wallace shot to the head of the class and proved go be the “A” student, riding with great style and speed to take the moto win. Suzuki rider Carter Gordon also put in a great ride for second, finishing ahead of Kawasaki rider Breannan Stanfield. In the second moto Wallace again had the perfect score taking the moto win. Yamaha rider Victor Kalaher put in a epic ride for second in the moto with Carter Gorden third.

Gordon took second overall with 2-3 moto scores ahead of Victor Kalaher (5-2). The D class was one of the largest of the day, a good sign of things to come for the future. In the first moto Yamaha rider Daniel Cook took the moto win with Honda rider Bryce Cox second and Alexander Godwin third. In the second moto Cook again took the moto win. Cox and Godwin finished second and third again, after an epic battle. These riders traded positions and raced the whole moto and for sure had to have had a great time. One thing for sure is that I didn’t see any of these riders without a smile on their face after the motos. That being the case, I would say they are all winners... welcome to motocross. GP Racing comes to Indy Indianapolis Motor Speedway Indianapolis, Indiana - August 30 By Gordon Lunde

T

he Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP circus returned to Indy in ’09 with better weather and better racing. Rains threatened the first day of practice but over the weekend the weather turned fabulous and the crowds were reveling in great sport. Current World Champion Valentino Rossi held a commanding 50 point lead coming into this race and appeared to be running away to another championship winning season. One slip, one fall, in one race can change all that though. Rossi made an uncharacteristic mistake and crashed out of the event but, he was not the only rider to do so. Dani Pedrosa on the Repsol Honda machine jumped out to an immediate lead and looked to have the track mastered. However, Rossi and Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo gave chase and had closed on him until Pedrosa succumbed to gravity and fell on lap four. From there, it was Rossi out front with Lorenzo chasing. Pedrosa did manage to pick up his bike and continue on to a tenth place result. Rossi’s lead was short lived as he drifted wide in turn two and lost the front end while trying to get back on line. Lorenzo inherited the lead on lap nine and now led Alex de Angelis and Colin Edwards. Later on the same lap, Ducati mounted Nicky Hayden passed Edwards for the last podium spot and chased de Angelis for the rest of the race. Though it was a valiant attempt, it was not to be for the American former World Champion. Behind Hayden, Andrea Dovizioso closed steadily and overtook Edwards when the other American rider slid and lost too much time. Dovizioso then went about trying

to catch Hayden. Every lap he shortened the gap and Dovi looked to have the pace in this battle for third, but he came up short at the end. The GP is a great event to attend. If you haven’t made the trip yet, get your tickets early for next year’s race. There is so much to do and see over the three days in Indy. The vendor displays and store are loaded with goodies to see and purchase. Many have free give aways and contests to win goodies. Kevin Schwantz had his roadrace school the days prior to the event and there was a track ride for those who signed up in advance. Downtown Indianapolis puts on a great party each night. Several clubs have live music and the streets are renamed for the GP riders over the weekend. Then there are stunt shows and much more to keep a race fan busy.

Of course you don’t want to miss the Indy Mile held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds just a short distance away from the Speedway. But, that is another story. I94 Supercross Series Finale Hustler Wisconsin - August 28/ 29 By Doug Forstner

T

away from the field. The action behind him was great, as Kody Smith would follow him across the checkers ahead of Rollin Petersen. Jared Georgeson and Lewis Medearis traded passes throughout the race with Georgeson coming out in fourth.

he final two rounds of the I94 Supercross Series were completed on backto-back days in conjunction with the annual Hustlerfest that happens every year in Hustler, WI. The Supercross races were held Friday night under the lights and then the track was cranked back up for racing on Saturday. As we entered the track Friday night, I was reminded of the baseball movie “Field of Dreams” with Kevin Costner. A voice told him to build a baseball field out in the middle of nowhere in Iowa. Everyone around him thought this was a crazy idea. Well, the CMJ race crew have a gem of a track out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by tall corn fields, and it is also a great idea. The town of Hustler is very receptive to all the racers, and it is just a great little community. The track was well lit for the racing Friday night, but the pending storms were nearly certain to hit. Maybe this is the field of dreams because everyone from Madison to Lacrosse, north to Wausau got rain and storms that night, everyone except for us. Someone must have been looking out for us. Racing got under way at 7pm, and the Hustlerfest crowd was excited for the racing action. As standard for this series, heat races determine your start pick on the gate, leaving the majority of battling for the main events. The Vet class is one of the larger classes in the series, and the experienced riders know when to pick their battles. Eric Parker, Ted Coplein, and Eric Waege all set out to try and win the main. Parker was out front for a lap or two but soon found out the riders behind him were eager. Some bumping and banging ensued, and when the dust settled, Coplein found himself with the win over Parker as Waege rounded out the podium. Gary Behrens and Michael Barta had a great race for fourth and fifth as well. The other class with a bunch of entries was the 85cc group, and Robbie Hyson showed up on his KTM and put on a show. He quickly Max Early won the 50cc class got out front and steadily pulled as well as the I94 Series championship. 52 CYCLE USA, October 2009

When the racing was finished Friday night the cake walk and fair was all but shutdown for the evening. I awoke on Saturday excited about the activities that were planned for the day. I had a difficult time concentrating on racing with a pancake breakfast, volleyball at Hooterbowl, parade, backseat driving course, pie eating contest, chicken poop contest, chicken throwing contest and of course the pickled pigs feet bob! Oh yea carnival rides and even more food too. How the heck was I suppose to concentrate on racing? The final day of the I94 Supercross series was also the deciding day points wise for the overall championships. The majority of the classes all were coming down to the final main event to decide who would win their class, not only for the day but for the series as well. The Vet class again had a large turnout and Waege needed only a consistent finish to garner the overall in the class. Parker and Coplein got out front of Waege in the main. Waege was busy trying to hold off Troy Fisher and Barta. Coplein and Parker battled to the very last straight, with Coplein getting the highly contested win over Parker. Waege managed to salvage third ahead of Fisher and also wrap up the series title in the Vet class. Again, in the 85cc class, Hyson put on a clinic. His skills on a bike are impressive, and he will be one to watch in the future. Peterson battled hard to take second ahead of Cyle Harris and Dylan Kobel. Peterson needed to beat Georgeson if he wanted to win the series title and he did just that as Georgeson finished in seventh. Trytan Stewart was on the gas all weekend in the 65cc class winning both Friday and Saturday’s main events. He needed the win on Saturday over Michael Georgeson to also beat him for the overall in the series by two points. Stewart also had the highest point total throughout the series, and walked away with a brand new Moose helmet for his efforts. The 50cc class also had a slew of kids and the winner of the series and days of racing was Max Early. Luke Parker overcame his Friday night bike problems and put his bike on the podium in second and also took second in the series. Travis Slaght rode a

Vet class start; #65 ted coplien Sr., #724 Eric Waege, #109 Michael Barta, #123 troy Fisher, and #435 Eric Parker.

consistent fifth to bring home third overall in the series. I really like this class because I noticed at least five or six different models of racing bikes compete from modded two strokes to the ever-durable CRF50 and TTR50 four strokes. These kids give it their all whether in practice, heats or the main events. All these tracks are super kid friendly so next year if you have a young son or daughter, this is a great series to get them started racing with. I managed to concentrate long enough to get some riding in the pitbike class as I was able to hold off my friend Matt Bronk and his son Talon on Saturday. I think I won by a couple inches giving me the crown for the series as well. I must confess though, I really wanted to enter the Hog scramble over at the Hustlerfest, and I had all I could do to hold off the hard charging Bronk tag team. The best part of this series was that everyone had fun and that is what it is all about. A shout out to all the sponsors who helped Chris and Kirsten put on an awesome race series. Engelhart Center, Mike’s Motorsports, EVS, Wiseco, Motosports Factory, Decal Works, Leisure Time Sports, Moose Racing, FMF Racing, Bear Creek Cranberries, Forward Motion all helped out along with others. In this tough economy, they were able to secure over $4,000 in prizes, awards, certificates etc. Every class winner got a set of Moose racing pants along with gift certificates, plaques and trophies. his weekend was the last of the two quad events to complete the series for the quad motocross season in District 23. The weather couldn’t have been any better. Sun shining, just the right amount of wind and no rain in sight for days, it provided the perfect setup for spectacular racing, great atmosphere for spectators and good track conditions provided to all by the Grays. The following riders were able to clinch first place positions in both motos, both days at Hurricane Hills during this double header: Ryan Anderson - 70cc Prod, Gunner Tebow 70cc Mod, Tyler Mack - 90cc Prod, Cody Ditzig - Yth Sport, Mike Barnhart - +30, Nick Waxon - Open B, and Nick Waxon - Prod 450B. Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment. Special recognition goes to Cory Klocek, home on a two week leave from serving in Iraq. He spent his long weekend enjoying family, friends and racing his newly refinished quad. His 2004 Arctic Cat DVX 440 was tricked out by Quad Central Motorsports in Ham Lake, which provided Corey with labor and shop space to completely restore the frame and rebuild the engine. Motowoz in Ham Lake provided custom built long travel shocks. M & D metal Finishing created a custom color powder coating scheme and Blown Concepts provided custom graphics on Corey’s quad and trailer. All of this was done via internet communications from Corey in Iraq and his girlfriend Jamie Weidenhamer back home. It was great to see Corey enjoying himself and a BIG Thank You to him for supporting and defending our country.

Hawkeye Downs Championships decided cedar Rapids, Iowa - August 29 By Michael Sierens

T

he last race of the ten race series is finally here. Many riders turned countless laps on the track during the long season to put themselves in position to win their class at Hawkeye Downs. The weather couldn’t have been any better for a motocross race. A few days of rain earlier in the week helped the Cedar Valley Trail Riders get the track ready for the final race, and it was another good one for sure. Zach Johnson put his Yamaha out front in the 14-24A main event. Behind was Justin Grossnickle, Nathan Kimball and Jed Seeman. The seven rider pack moved through the infield section and towards the back of the track in a single file line. Johnson was able to put some distance on Grossnickle until they got to the back rhythm section where Grossnickle had the better line and closed the gap. Grossnickle was showing Johnson a wheel in every corner, trying to find a line around. Behind the lead duo, Seeman was on the back wheel of Kimball for the third place position. Grossnickle waited until the final lap to make the move to the front by grabbing a handful of throttle through the whoop section. After he made the pass for the lead, he was able to record his first race win of the year. Johnson took home a hard fought second place with Kimball just holding off Seeman for third. The battle for the championship in the +30B class has been a two-man race all sea-

son. Defending ‘08 champion Matt Morris has been battling with Jason Goss, and, Goss hasn’t finished outside of the top three all year, and his consistency earned him the points lead heading into the final race. Morris needed to win the race, and hope for some bad luck on Goss for him to take the title as he was fifteen points back. Troy Pflughaupt on his Suzuki grabbed the holeshot with Morris in second heading through the right hand first turn. The pack headed into the infield section where they began to string out a little. John Cooke jumped his way into the fourth place as he chose to triple the infield section. Morris made quick work of Pflughaupt through the back sweeper into the rhythm section, moving into the lead. Goss was in the third place, keeping a watchful eye on Morris. Goss made the pass into second through the whoops, dropping Pflughaupt back on the second lap. Morris checked out and recorded his third win of the year, but came up short of the championship. Goss rode a conservative race to finish second, but more importantly, win the championship. “I had a safe year this year, and was always in the top three each race. I had a lot of fun and I’m really happy to win this championship,” said Goss shortly after his race. “I really want to thank the great people here at Hawkeye Downs and all the guys in my class, All Seasons Auto and M.S. Action Photography, they have all been a big help for me this year.” Austin Raubs took the holeshot in the

Open A main with Todd Walton, Justin Grossnickle and Zach Johnson second through fourth. Raubs put his head down and quickly put some distance on second place Walton. Both Raubs and Walton gapped the rest of the field by the end of the second lap. The race for third was beginning to heat up as Grossnickle was getting some serious pressure from Johnson. Jed Seeman, back in fifth place was also closing the gap on Johnson, but the positions all held to the end. In the Open B class it was a two-man race for the top spot in the season championship fight. Logan Neuhaus and Brian Jestrab were tied in points heading into this final race. Neuhaus, who has recorded four wins already, but had major setbacks in rounds three and eight. Meanwhile, the more consistent Brian Jestrab has been scoring valuable points each race, and sits poised for the top spot if he can finish one spot in front of Neuhaus. As the gate dropped for the final time Neuhaus put his YZ250 two stoke up front of the twelve man field. Arick Abraham from Dakota, IL made the pass around Ryan Hetzler into second place as the pack funneled into the infield. Jestrab was in fourth place, and loosing ground quickly on the leader. Jestrab was trying to move to the front but he had his hands full with Hetzler, and couldn’t find the speed around him. Neuhaus backed it down on the final lap to secure the win and the 250B season championship. Abraham finished a distant second with a great race back to the finish line between Ryan Hetzler and Jestrab. Hetzler held the inside line in the last corner and held onto third place. Another tight race in the season championships was in the 85Jr class. Brock Donaldson and William Check were separated by just two points heading into the race. With each position worth three points, whoever finished in front of the other would take home the title. When the gate dropped it was Trey Moore from nearby Center Point, IA who grabbed the holeshot. Moore who ran a limited schedule at Hawkeye Downs has won every race he entered here. Racing with Trey was his younger brother Brandon in second. Donaldson got off the gate well and was in third place, but Check didn’t fare as well. He was back in sixth on the opening lap. Trey Moore took his fifth win on the season. Behind Trey the race for the championship between Donaldson and Check came to an end with the finish of

third place by Donaldson and the seventh place by Check deciding the outcome. Donaldson erased the points deficit and turned it into a ten point victory. The Cedar Valley Trail Riders would like to thank the thier sponsors for making the 2009 racing season a success; Answer, MSR, Tucker Rocky, Pro Taper, FMF, Xtreme Sports,

Ohnsorg Brothers dominate Mazeppa Mazeppa, Mn - August 2 By Mike Nelson

B

rothers Kurt and Kyle Ohnsorg absolutely dominated the racing action at Hurricane Hills MX Park just outside of Mazeppa, MN this weekend. They competed in three classes each and combined for a clean sweep of the day winning twelve motos for six total class wins. Older brother Kurt started things out by taking the inside line on Travis Johnson and getting the holeshot in the first drop of the day in the Junior class competition with Trent Kubes hot on their heels. Johnson stayed close, but Ohnsorg ran a smooth race with no mistakes leaving no opportunities to pass as he took the first of the dozen wins for the brothers. The third moto included younger brother Kyle in the 125cc 2-Stroke class. The race lineup had them sharing the drop with the +25B & C classes, and Kyle was out powered to the first turn by a few of the B riders on their bigger machines, but was out ahead of the rest of his class and gave the +25B riders a run for their money as he rode to his first victory of the day. The elder Ohnsorg had fairly smooth sailing all day taking one holeshot after another and riding them all the way to the checkers topping the Junior, 14-24B, and 250B classes. Kyle’s Day wasn’t quite a smooth, but he Kurt ohnsorg was able to make early passes when he needed them and still managed to dominate the 125cc 2-Stroke, Schoolboy, and 250C classes. Young Gavin Tilford out of 60

CYCLE USA, October 2009

Pine Island, MN gave his all in a stellar performance in the 50cc classes. Tilford chalked up six wins of his own for the day, taking all three classes he was eligible to ride in on his little KTMs. His wins were hard fought with another youngster, Dillon Nelson. Tilford and Nelson swapped leads several times in their races, but when the checkers dropped it was Tilford out front each time. Pierce Knight and Preston Gray put on quite a show in the 65cc 7-9 and 7-11 classes. Gray took all four of the holeshots and held on to win the first moto in 7-11 competition. Knight fought back though and finally got by Gray on the last lap of the first 7-9 moto to get the win. These youngsters battled

hard all day and when the dust settled, Pierce Knight ended up on top for both classes. Gray’s younger brother Jackson made his 65cc debut this weekend.
