District 16 Banquet. We have released the banquet ticket order form, published in this issue on page 38. You can also find a copy on the our web site at amadistrict16.com. Don’t miss this great event! From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman By the time you read this our season will be complete. We will be making plans for the upcoming season and planning our annual business meeting. The sanction meeting which is the format for setting the schedule will be the first weekend in December. Also, on Saturday December 6th starting at 1PM we will be holding our annual business meeting. All current D23 members will receive a mailing that lists all the proposed rules changes along with the names of people that have volunteered to elected positions. We also take nominations from the floor and I urge you to consider running for one of our board positions. We have many class representative positions that will need filling, along with several other posts. As a volunteer organization we need the help of our members to keep things moving along smoothly. I would also like to remind all of you that there will be four separate awards ceremonies to round out the 2014 season. All the details will be mailed out to the membership. The MX awards ceremony and meal will be held in January of 2015. There will not be any walk in tickets available for this ceremony. Look for all the details to arrive in your mailbox soon and also find them online at armca.org. As I am writing this three MN Pro Motocrossers are on a plane to Latvia to represent us at the Motocross of Nations. By the time you read this we will know the results. There will be some very competitive teams at the MXoN this year, but with an all Midwest team I think our

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... chances for the Chamberlian Trophy are good. We also have a D23 rider that took top honors in A class in the National Enduro Series. Congratulations to Matt Stavish for taking this honor at a spry 47 years old. This has been a stellar season for our District racers with a Loretta’s title, several national Hillclimb class wins, and Pro National champions in MX. We would like to congratulate all of our racers that have competed at the national level. Your hard work is definitely paying off. We still face issues with government interference, and the economy, but we are working hard to get our numbers back up and get our racers back on the tracks and trails. We will continue to work toward improving all of our activities and our membership numbers. Healthy numbers allows us to do more for our membership and grow. Lastly I want remind all of you that shortly after you receive this there will be an election. Do your research and think long and hard about who you vote for. There are several candidates that will be detrimental to our sport should they be re-elected, or elected. My basic philosophy at this point is replace them all, send no one back for another term. Voting is very personal so please do your research. The TV ads are usually far from accurate so don’t rely on them as a source of information. See you all on the tracks and trails of Minnesota. Mike

KI Tracks D17 Bonus Race Oregon, Illinois - Sept. 7 By Josh Rud, More photos at www.shiftonephotography,com

A

s summer comes to end, Ki Tracks had their double-header the weekend of September sixth and seventh. The seventh was also bonus points for District 17, so things were getting heated and some great racing was underway the entire weekend. The weather always seems to be an issue this summer, fortunately for this weekend it worked out to be just enough rain to keep the track in great shape, with multiple lines in every corner. Starting off the day was a packed 14-24 class. In the first moto hometown track rider Malachi Messenger took the win with Damon Thomas and Travis Ward filling out the top three. The gates dropped on the second moto with Messenger getting a

Gunner Schmidgal going to fifth overall in 85Jr.

jump followed closely by Thomas and Ward again. Into the third turn Sean Hallin railed the inside to take over third. Messenger was riding smooth as ever, and starting to make a good gap with Thomas and Hallin going back in forth to secure second place. Messenger came across for the win and overall. Thomas secured second and Billy Holzapfel grabbed third overall after finishing fourth in both motos. Hallin’s third place bumped him up to fifth overall having finished sixth in the first moto. +50 was on the track with a lot of passing and close racing. In the first moto Roy Nafzger took the win followed by William Holzapfel and Mike Kaltenbach. The second started strong with Gerhard Ward putting him Service Honda up front for the holeshot with Orville

Eddie Lengwin leads Chase Boykin in the 125cc class.

Kline and Nafzger right behind him. Coming into the big bowl turn Nafzger went low taking over second with Kline now holding the pack off in third. Heading up the hill Nafzger took the lead. Half way through the second lap Holzapfel got into the mix, and took over third, then began putting pressure on Ward. At the checkers Nafzger took the win with Holzapfel getting by Ward to lock up second overall, finishing off one of the many great races of the day. Open B was another close race. In the first moto Damon Thomas took the win followed by Travis Ward and Jimmy Wolf. The second moto gate dropped with Thomas taking a hard outside line, snagging the holeshot with Zach Martin and Ward sneaking in right behind him. Into the third turn Wolf made his presence known as he took over third with Martin still holding onto second. The laps wore down with Thomas starting to stretch out his lead with Wolf and Ward going back and forth in a battle for the second spot. Thomas crossed the line to take the overall after sweeping both motos. Wolf stuck in second place taking second overall ahead of Ward. Schoolboy was out on the track next with another exciting race. In the first moto Eddie Norrad took the win with Tiaga Judd and Jimmy Epifanio just back as they crossed the finish. They flew off the line in the second moto with Judd grabbing the early lead followed by Norrad and Epifanio. Norrad took over the lead with Chase Boykin following in second. Epifanio was third as everything got shook up with everyone packed in tight. Things stayed pretty calm for a few laps before Epifanio opened it up and starting picking off spots. He took over second, moving Boykin back to third and then started chasing Norrad. Coming over the off camber downhill into the sand on the last lap Epifanio took the lead. Epifanio dug in hard on the inside rut before the finish to take the checkers with Norrad close behind. However with the results of the first moto Norrad took the overall with Epifanio in second and Judd third overall after finishing fourth in the moto. 250C was out late in the day, and an insane race for sure. In the first moto Stuart Schwagerman took the win with Tiaga Judd and John Krska filling out the top three. The second moto launched off the line and Judd grabbed the holeshot with

Open B start, with #385 Damon Thomas getting the holeshot. He went on to win both motos.

Schwagerman and Nick Britt right behind him. Hitting the second barrel, Schwagerman tucked the front end going down, taking Britt with him. Klayton Fox and Steve Simmons snuck by to fill the top three. Hitting the bowl turn Krska came in hot on the inside, taking over third and setting his sights on second place. Almost out of nowhere on the second lap Schwagerman had got up and was on the gas hard. They came out of the woods with Schwagerman moving all the way up to second with Judd still out front and Fox holding third. Schwagerman was on a mission and it wasn’t long before he took over the lead. Coming across the line Schwagerman took the win after a long battle back to the front, securing the overall. Judd finished second overall and Fox grabbed third overall with a fourth place in the first moto. It was a great race weekend out at Ki Tracks. Things went smooth and the track was held up great all day. The race season is winding down; it always goes by so quickly with the cooler weather already starting to move in. Be sure to make your way out to Ki Tracks and check out this unique layout and beautiful setting. New Venue for D16 Dirt Trackers Oshkosh, WI - September 6 By Bert Sumner

Motorcycle/ATV dirt track racing returned to the Oshkosh Speedzone for the first time in over twenty years, and one hundred forty-seven entries - from seven states showed up to celebrate. The immaculately prepared 1/3 mile clay oval, with wide sweeping corners provided a consistent racing surface all night. This meant side-by-side, fast racing in all the classes. The night got off to a rocky start when the first heat race of the night, Quad A went three-wide into turn three on the opening lap, only to have all hell break loose. Four quads lay immobile when all was settled, and Chuck Calvert, an early pioneer in ATV/ Quad racing and multi-time District champion, had to be transported to the local hospital with several broken bones. Once racing resumed, the action didn’t let up until three hours later when the final checkered flag flew, right on schedule. Elijah Stigler bested Sherman Lackey and Brett Durant in the Quad A final. Jeff Chromy and Mike Yogerst won the Super Sr heat races. Then in the final Jeff Peterson from Mount Prospect, Illinois took over the lead on lap two and led Dan Vonmoos, Roger Johnson and Chromy to the checkered. Clayton Vonmoos and Jesse Janisch claimed the two Open Amateur heat race wins, but later Janisch had his hands full with Indiana’s Charlie Gerencer in the final. Gerencer made an outside pass on lap six, and led Janisch home for the win over DJ Slosser and Michael Van Langen. Indiana’s Casey Chisham 8

CYCLE USA, October 2014

handled the 65cc class over Cole Andresen and Ezra Brusky by winning both the heat and the main events. Chisham nearly scored a double, as he led the first five laps of the 85cc final before giving way to Tyler Livingston of Michigan. Nate Minster, of Minnesota completed the only nonWisconsinite podium of the night. The two brake-less divisions, 500/ 750 and Classics were combined, with Mike Anderson (on the ex-Gary Nixon Grand National Championship winning Triumph T100) besting Terry Vestal’s Pettis Brothers’ Harley KR. Matt McNall brought his BSA 250 home in third, over George Patrick’s Ducati 250. Jordan Schwarm won the fastest Quad B heat of the night, but George McBride grabbed the holeshot in the final and held Schwarm at bay for the entire distance. Keegan Reitz passed Tyler Schrimpf at the flag to take third. Former pros Terry Vestal and Steve Kasten led Danny Murre and Robert Reese early on in the Vintage final, but Charlie Gerencer overcame a poor start and began pressuring Kasten for the lead on lap three. Kasten and Gerencer battled high and low all around the track, but Kasten’s TT500 had more punch that Gerencer’s Bultaco Astro in the final run to the flag. Jim Kirschbaum won the Senior class heat and final, but Mike Yogerst made the biggest improvement by finishing second in the final after finishing fourth in the heat. Terry Vestal led Greg Barth and Tom Hochmuth home behind Yogerst. Charlie Gerencer won the first 250cc Amateur heat

#51 Michael Van Langen won the battle with #25 Blake Berry and #22 Chaz Meiman and went on to top the 251-505 Final. Second place Quad A rider, Waupun, WI’s Brett Durant.

#24 Max Smith and #66 Indiana’s Cody Chisham in the 250cc class.

Gerencer led the final from start-to-finish, while Vonmoos, Lange, Meiman, and Chisham fought it out a few bike lengths behind. On the last lap, Lange passed Vonmoos for second while Chisham dropped Meiman to fifth. The largest class of the night, 505cc Amateur required three heats and a semi. Blake Berry, Michael Van Langen, and Parker Lange transferred out of heat one; Gerencer, Ryan Weber and Cody Reifsnider out of heat two; Janisch Clayton Vonmoos and Slosser out of heat three. Alec Muth, Chaz Meiman, and Nick Hansen made it out of the semi. Van Langen, Janisch, and Gerencer fought tooth-and-nail for eight laps, with Slosser and Reifsnider lurking right behind. They finished in that order. Morgen Mischler dominated the Open Pro division, leading fellow Pro Singles rider Christian Johnson home in both the heat and final. Crossroads MX Pro-Am

Ty Tyrrell with a good start in 250A.

Mason, Illinois - September 7 By James Pinckard

T

he World of Powersports backed Crossroads Cup Pro-Am was hosted by Crossroads MX Park. With rain early in the week the crew did a great job having the track ready to go. The soft dirt provided great traction, and ruts that were a challenge for the riders. The crew kept the track safe for all and the second motos were great. Being a Pro-Am, riders were there to watch the A classes in addition to racing their own motos. The Pro-Am riders were there to gather points to become a full pro and race the Nationals. The first class of the day was Open A. You can sum up today’s Pro-AM classes with one name; Jace Owen. Owen Motorsports Honda rider Jace Owen made the trip to Crossroads after finishing 24th in the outdoor Nationals. Congrats on the success! In the first moto the Yamahas of Mark Weishnar and Ty Tyrrell were out front with Owen close behind off the start. Owen worked his way around Tyrrell and closed on Weishnar who crossed the finish line to finish the first lap still in the lead. (This would be the only lap Owen wouldn’t lead in the Pro-Am classes) On the second lap Owen passed Weishnar and went to work. Each lap Owen pulled a little more to the checkered flag. The rider on the move was Honda rider Drayke Sizemore. After being in eighth at the end of the first lap, at the end of the second lap Sizemore was fifth and still climbing. On the fourth lap he passed Honda rider Kyle Durham for third and set out after Weish10

nar. At the end of the sixth lap Sizemore made the pass into second. Weishnar finished third. In the second moto Owen again made short work of the pack and was out front and trucking. Each lap he hit his marks and even though he pulled a lead, he charged to the end. A perfect example of what makes a good rider, great. Sizemore had his Honda cranking in second. Behind Sizemore, Tyrrell was on the gas and in third at the end of the first lap, but trouble allowed Honda rider Kyle Durham, Mark Weishnar and Trey Launius past, setting up a great race. By lap four Tyrrell passed Launius and set out after Weishnar. With Tyrrell working it he made the pass and moved into fourth. Still charging, he just couldn’t make his way into third. At the finish it was Owen, Sizemore, Durham and Tyrrell fourth. Owen took the overall and set his eyes on the 250A. Sizemore took second overall with Tyrrell third. In the 250A class first moto it looked

like a rewind of Open with Owen out front, pounding laps with Sizemore hounding in second and Tyrrell third. On lap four that changed with Sizemore making a mistake and dropping back to sixth. Honda rider Derrick Boyd, Quentin Jones, Alex Malott and Cody Slider passed him to settle behind Tyrrell. On lap six Sizemore passed Slider, then Malott, moving into fourth behind Boyd. At the finish Owen took the win with another large lead with Tyrrell second. In the second moto Owen again showed his speed, running out front. Sizemore, Boyd, Weishnar and Tyrrell rounded out the top five at the end of the first lap. On the second lap Tyrrell passed Weishnar for fourth and that set the order for the rest of the moto. Owen was the overall winner, but there was a three way tie for second. Sizemore had a score of 4-2, Boyd 3-3 and Tyrrell 2-4. The tie-breaking second moto gave Sizemore second ahead of Boyd and Tyrrell. The true winner was the crowd

Open and 250A class winner Jace Owen with his father Mike.

because this was just great, and very close racing. In the 250B class it was all about racer X. Not the magazine, but the KTM two-stroke of Giancarlo Clouser with a big X on the plates. Clouser took the holeshot in the first moto with fellow two-stroke rider Brennon Kershaw and his Husky in second. Travis Walker was third on his Kawasaki. Behind them it was a battle for fourth between Dominic Clouser and Stephen Cecil. Dominic would hold fourth until the last lap when Cecil slipped past for the spot. In the second moto Giancarlo again put in an outstanding race taking moto and overall win. Kershaw finished second. Early in the moto Walker was in third and looking to finish there like the first moto. Only problem with that plan was Cecil who worked past him into third for the moto and overall. The 125 class is for young kids right? No! The first

moto had Honda rider Troy Noland taking the win with Chanc Pearson second, after coming off a double moto and overall win in +40! Third for the moto was Yamaha rider Bryce Weger. In the second moto things were flipped around. Weger had things under control, taking the moto and overall win. Second went to Pearson. Suzuki rider Preston Nelson took third but finished fourth overall behind Noland. 450 Take on Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - Aug 10 By Rolfe Otterness

I

t was time to get back to business after the mid-summer excitement of the Motocross National, as Spring Creek’s Super Series resumed. Around 450 entries were recorded for the day’s race with decent summer weather, and strong competition in most classes. Christian Craig, after a very successful quartet of pro national stops was back in his adopted stomping grounds, making life

tough for the A classes. Josh Boaz was running strong in the 85cc classes, taking three wins as was Gage Steberg on the 65’s with two overalls. Henry Miller jumped up to A, after a solid run in the B classes at Loretta’s. He took the win in 250A with a 2-1 score. And the Harens family was hanging tough with young Vincent scoring wins in two classes on the revamped Pee Wee track, and his dad topping +40B. As if all that wasn’t enough excitement, a black bear wandered down to the Pee Wee track and sautered on through to check things out, then took off when he found no one would race while he was there! The races resumed shortly after his departure. The 65cc 7-11 class burst off the line for moto one with Jayden Clough grabbing the lead. Gage Steberg and Ethan McMahon settled into pursuit

with Avery Long not far behind. Clough was running strong and held on all the way for the win with Steberg second. Long managed to displace McMahon on the last lap to grab third and Trevin Nelson wrangled a fifth. Clough jumped out to lead in moto two but Steberg was ready for him and took over a lap into the race. From there he managed to gap Clough just a bit, and take the win. Long again was third with Nelson and McMahon pulling 4-5 this time. Supermini moto one featured a nice holeshot by Devin Stang, and then he and Josh Boaz were battling over the lead for nearly the entire race. Boaz was really pressing for the win on the last lap, but went down. He managed to salvage second place and was followed across the line by Tayler Grall, Ruger Brown and Chase Cooper. Stang grabbed the early lead in moto two then had immediate pressure from Boaz, who managed to take the lead on lap two. Stang kept hounding him after the pass, but Boaz finally got away a little and took the win. Grall was running third

ahead of Brown for much of the race until Brown crashed on the last lap and dropped out. Aaron Boatman inherited fourth over Cooper at the finish line. Blaze Best stormed off the line on his smoker KTM to lead the way in the 250B class. He was eclipsed at the front soon by Nick Schnagel along with Mateo Johnson and Gavin Wilkins, aided by a minor bobble by Best on lap one. Schnagel was cookin’ and edged away from the pack to take a nice safe win. Wilkins moved up to second but then dropped it and went way back in the pack leaving Johnson and Best in the 2-3 finishing positions. Tyler Lowe was fourth and Austin Kienast fifth. Best snared another holeshot in moto two and had Schnagel challenge early, but Schnagel seemed to have some problems and dropped his pace. Johnson moved into second with Lowe challenging and getting in front as they hit the whoops. His time near the front was brief as he went down and dropped into the pack before they finished the lap. At the checkered Best took the win with Johnson claiming second over Kienast. Joe Gomez and Casey Erickson rounded out the top five which scored them enough

points to get top five overall too. The Open A class was the showcase for Christian Craig’s talents, and as expected he tore off the line to lead moto one. Gavin Kadlec gave early chase in second with Luke Peters and Jake Loberg not far behind. Also, newcomer to the A class Henry Miller was running in fifth by the end of the first lap. Loberg worked his way by Peters and then Kadlec to take over second, but there was no way he was catching Craig out front. On the last lap Miller took over third and the flag flew over Kadlec and Peter as they scored in fourth and fifth. Big Day at Pine Ridge Pro-Am Athelstane, Wisconsin - August 31 By Cody Wills

M

other Nature can be the coolest lady out there and sometimes she can be the most difficult. The Pine Ridge crew was tossed a work load the day before the recent race weekend, and it came in the form of inches and inches of rain. Saturday’s practice had to be canceled and the only action that was happening on the track was a few people putting their kayaks in and could go from the first corner all the way to the turn three. That meant it left some serious work for the crew. They had to call in a Vacuum truck to start sucking the water out of sections of the track. After hours and hours of pumping they ended up pulling 95,000 gallons off of the track, then they could start to actually work on the track. Even with the forecasted weekend rain, the Pine Ridge Pro-Am drew in 469 entries, one of if not the biggest of any District 16 race yet this year. The peewee classes seem to be getting bigger and bigger every weekend, and today was no different. The 50Sr class saw some serious speed out of these little guys. Isaac Therrien was one of those fast little guys. He simply dominated, putting his Cobra in the winner’s spot both motos. Brody Tobianski was solid in second, with some pressure from Nathan Postma who actually was running second for a while in moto one, battling with Tobianski before eventually falling in a corner. 50Jr had some notable rides as well. Deegan Vanvreede and Cruz Anschutz had

a little battle in each moto. Vanvreede got the best of each moto ahead of Anschutz, but they would be in a class of their own. The first Pro-am class was 450A, and the big buz of the weekend was the return on Nate Laporte, as he returned from a summer on the road competing in every outdoor national, qualifying for 8 of 12 aboard his Donahue Super Sport YZ450. After he won the opening moto of Unlimited A, other riders in 450A knew that winning this class would be no easy task. Moto one was what we expected, Laporte out front and he checked out. Kody Kamm went down in the first turn. So the two national rider battle would have to wait. Justis Heckendorf and David Watzka got out behind Laporte, but it wouldn’t take more than a lap for Hunter Sayles to take over second. Kamm went from being the last guy to pick up his bike

to come through the twenty plus rider field, eventually catching Sayles and taking over second. That’s how they finished. Fourth ended up going to Dylan Ziolkowski on his new ‘15 KX450. Moto two saw Kamm get the start this time and Laporte in close tow. Some wondered if the race was on seeing the two riders were 1-2, but it wouldn’t last long. Laporte laid the hammer down and moved into the lead. Kamm did what he could to hang with, but it wasn’t enough. Laporte proved moto one wasn’t a fluke and checked out. Sayles finished in third. Bryce Backaus picked up fourth as his speed got faster and faster as the day went on. Ziolkowski had another consistent moto finishing fifth. The 250A class saw another good match-up between Laporte and Kamm. Laporte had troubles with his new 250, so we also got to see some real sportsmanship as Kamm handed his biggest competition his practice bike to race him with. Laporte’s first time on the bike was riding it to the start line. The other big unknown everyone was keeping their eye on as well was Hunter Sayles. It was the borrowed bike out front… with Nate Laporte leading. Kamm was tight in second and Sayles close in third. Laporte held the lead for a couple laps before

Kamm was able to use his familiarity of the bike to make the move around Laporte. It became a full on freight train from there with the top three checking out as close as Laporte was to Kamm, Sayles was to Laporte. Bryce Backaus worked hard to pick up fourth in moto one. Moto two saw Kamm get out front and pretty much check out this time. Laporte was in a position to work forward and Backaus was on the tail of Kamm. Sayles and Dylan Wolff were battling it out for

third. Their battle allowed Kamm to pull away, and Backaus to lock down second. Sayles got the third spot again, giving him third overall and Backaus’ 4-2 finishes were good for second overall. Laporte worked his way to fifth and fourth overall. This wrapped up District racing for the year at Pine Ridge Raceway, and they had to work for it this weekend, overcoming all that Mother Nature tossed down. The crew did a great job keeping up with the track all day. The

Chardae Tovar went 6-4 for fifth overall in the Women’s class.

Greg Moss Memorial Byron, Illinois - August 24

W

hile we are fans of pretty much anything racing, some events just have a bigger, and more significant feel to them. Local events... with extra meaning. On this late August weekend, one of these takes place in Byron, IL, at Motosports Park. Usually this would mean motocross, but once a year facility owner Aaron Vincer opens the grounds to the Forest City Riders motorcycle club in conjunction with WFO Promotions, to run a special Greg Moss Memorial Hare Scrambles race. Points for the WFO Series, District 17, and to add even more interest, District 16 points, all combine for a big event. A huge area of woods are opened up, and it makes for a fantastic hare scrambles course. Day one of the weekend is dedicated to the new GP racing. The Saturday race was cut short by rain. Sunday came with sunny skies, some of the warmer temps of the season, and plenty of humidity. The trails were wet, but very rideable, and ready for a great hare scrambles, just the way the late Greg Moss would have

Tommy Fortune won the 85cc 9-12 class.

wanted it. While the 50cc riders were running on their own course, race-day kicked off in the back of the facility with the 85cc, SuperMini and Women taking on a still pretty wet track. Running through the woods, much of the trail was essentially un-ridden, or even freshly cut. How challenging it was seemed to be determined by how well riders were able to get around. Slick was the most common description, along with fun. 85cc class winner Tommy Fortune had a good day. He took his time getting to the front, but once in the lead, put in a flawless race to finish ahead of Triston Nees and Tanner Whipple. Fortune, “I got third off the holeshot, and rode behind them for a while. After I got by, I just tried to ride a nice clean race as it was pretty slick out there. The enduro section was tough. You had to get in a higher gear and sort of just walk through it.” Austin Wells topped the very competitive AA class. Second place fintually have a lot of experience on trails like isher Nees, “I got the holeshot this, having raced hare scrambles since they and led until I blew a corner. were kids. In the Women’s class, today’s Tommy got by me so from there winner had never experienced anything like I just ran in second. With multiple rows of bikes leaving to begin a race at different times, it doesn’t take long after the start before you mix in with enough riders, that it can be difficult to know what class the rider close to you is riding. The +40A class had a good close battle for the top couple spots, yet the riders never really knew for sure what place they were in. Don Raschke, “ I had the holeshot and led the first lap. In the second lap I took a wrong turn and ended up way back behind everyone in my class, as well as the row that started behind us. Once I got back on track, I just put my head down and tried to pick off

as many riders as possible. Next thing I knew someone said I was in second, so I knew I had one more, and I had a pretty darn good idea who it was. The next lap I saw Jay Hall on that #450 bike, and I knew for sure then. I pressed as hard as I could, and got by him in the enduro section before the last lap. The course is absolutely great. I think the afternoon guys are going to have a spectacular track. There’s a great turnout today, and I know it’s because of the Greg Moss Memorial. He was a great guy. I and many others miss him a lot. It is great seeing his son Ryan so involved. He has some big shoes to fill following his dad’s footsteps, but he is doing a great job, and I know his dad is looking down on him and smiling.” As Raschke thought he picked off the win when pass-

It’s another great day at the races for sure.” Raschke’s charge back to the front pack landed him in second, not first as he thought at the finish. It was still a great come from behind performance. Out front, Rob McGee was on cruise control, never really realizing he was leading his class. The KTM150 rider McGee, “It was a humid day to start, so I went with safety glasses, and I even had to take them off. I knew goggles wouldn’t work. I got a decent start and worked my way up. Jacob Poulos topped them all, putting in seven laps as everyone else was out of time, finishing six. Kelby Getz and Nathan Bielema filled the top three spots. While conditions may have continously improved, the race didn’t get easier for everyone. Putting in everything he had, Zack Downey finished in ninth place. Downey, “I got two flats out there, but I still rode all the way. This was the hardest course of the season so far and I had to do it on flat tires.” The afternoon classes did have a great track. While the temps warmed well into the eighties, an additional trail was added onto the course used earlier. The longer course saw the top riders of the day manage six laps in the hot, and still humid

Kyleer Vance took the point off the start in AA, and right away found pressure from behind. Vance, “I pulled a little gap on the first lap, but it was still slippery, and it takes me a while to get into my groove, and these guys seem to go out hot. I made a few bobbles early and that hurt. Once I got it cleaned up I rode well. Overall I’ll take it. Once we got the soupy stuff off the track it was really good.” Colona, IL’s Austin Wells on his KTM made his move by Vance in the second lap, and never gave it up. Once in the lead, he never got a chance to relax though, as District 16’s fast guy, JD Friebel was working his way up after another bad start, and made it a race late in the laps. Wells, “I started in third but got to second right away. I followed Kyleer as we finished the first lap. I made the pass in the enduro section but then fell over on one of the logs. He got ahead, but I passed him back in the creek out back. There was a couple guys close behind me for most of the race, but then I started to pull away. It wasn’t long and JD caught me, and we both separated from the others. He was on me with two laps to go but then made a mistake or something, and dropped back so I was able to finally relax a little on the last lap. I’d like to thank Team SRT Off-Road, G2, Kenda, KTM and all my family.” Moose/ Husqvarna/ Keytime Motorsports backed Friebel put in a great ride for second, “The four stroke didn’t want to fire up, so I started back a bit as usual. I picked my way up and then finally got to second. It was a tight course, and hard to pass so you could really get held up behind others if you didn’t catch them at the right time. I caught Austin, but then he got by a lapper before a tricky hill and I didn’t, so I ended up pretty much having to push the bike up the hill. He gapped me there, and it was pretty much the end of any chance I had. I felt good, but hurt myself with the start. Cody Emery quietly stayed in the lead pack the entire race. Emery, “I got off to a good start, and when Kyleer messed up I got around him. I followed Austin CYCLE USA, October 2014

I ended up forth so I’m happy, and it was really good out there.” Open A class winner Bren Raschke, “the race went well, even though I got a terrible start. I followed everyone around for a bit in the beginning but managed to come back through about mid race. Once you get to the front it all becomes a little easier. I had an ideal I was top three mid-race, but when I stopped for gas they told me I was in the lead, so I just rode smooth from there.” Raschke topped sixteen in the class, with Luke Watters, Mason Amerling, JJ Beighle, and Zeb Zigler rounding out the top five. The B classes were stacked up with fast riders as well. Cody Barnes took the 250B class win ahead of Mason Schuhler, both finishing six laps, the only two B riders on that pace. Open B class winner Craig Capps after the race, “It took like five kicks to fire my bike, so I was dead last off the start. My bike has a problem, we just can’t get fixed where it just dies. I thought I was in the back and think I finished like sixth, but I have no idea.” Capps completed five laps, finishing ahead of District 16’s Ben Kortbein and Nolan Fritz, never realizing he was in the lead. Today was just one of those races... a lot of riders. Fast riders, new ones, and everyone in between. The course was great, and there were smiles all around. or the 22nd year Aztalan Cycle club played host to the history of motocross racing with the RacerX Senior Series/ Mike Gaborsky Memorial race. Through the weeks before race day the track crew hauled in truckloads of sand and mulch, prepping the track to be in perfect condition when the racers hit it on Friday for open practice. The crew saw rain in the forecast and decided to not water and this proved to be the exact choice as Mother Nature did the watering to perfection. Saturday morning, race day - the surface was muddy after a little more Kurt Andrews (21) gets the holeshot rain, but a quick scrape and in +50A moto one just ahead of Overall winner Roy Nafzger #93. another great racing surface was ready. 195 entries ranging from 18 to over 60 years old were ready to rip it up. The first gate drop of the day unleashed the +25A riders as Scott Zont edged out Joseph Dretzka at the holeshot corner. As they came over the plateau Dretzka was out front with Bryan White close behind. Zont hit the plateau with Tyler Smulders less than half a bike back, but Smulders jumped past to take third. Later, Zont worked his way back past Smulders on the final lap. Zont again took the holeshot for moto two with Dretzka on his rear fender. Despite a tight four way battle, Zont held on out front with Dretzka, White, and then Smulders all looking for any openings to advance. A 1/1 day gave Gooch the overall. Gooch, “The Dirty Old Blasters race is one that we look forward to each year. Mark Thompson from Cincinnati, Ohio and I have attended all twenty-one of them. If I look hard, I think I can find all the t-shirts. We raced in the heat and the rain. We have lost some good friends over the years. Mike Gaborsky, Tom Dretzka, and or course seeing Pete DeGrand getting hurt a couple of years ago was certainly some of the hard times. We always love the people and the track. It is a fun place to ride, generally pretty safe and always entertaining. Aztalan has a cast of characters, that brings us back year after year. Mark and I both race the +60 and +55 classes. We started the series in +30, and kept moving up through the years. It is amazing to see how big the +50 class has become. Now it is split into two groups. I started racing Suzuki’s, 45 years ago, and still love my yellow bikes. My current race bike is a 2013 RMZ450. Each time we head to the starting line, I feel fortunate to be still doing this in the +60 class. Still having fun, still trying to roost my friends, and always looking forward to the next race!” Casey Kloepping took the +40B/C moto one holeshot and stayed out front to the finish. Brad Schieble was in second as he came over the plateau with Joel Fonseca all over his rear tire. Fonseca slipped into second before lap three began with Schieble and Troy Blakey close behind. Kloepping took the overall with a 1/2 day, Blakey (4/1) second, and Fonseca (2/3) was third. When Sr +55 got their first gate drop Lonny Brown launched out front and stayed there all moto. Tim Boblin was in second coming with Steve Abt and Allen Brhely running behind him. Harold Gooch moved into fourth ahead of Brhely, and the running order held to the finish. Boblin grabbed the second moto holeshot, but Brown was out front midway through the first lap. Boblin settled into second ahead of Abt. Gooch challenged Abt for a couple laps but by the time the white flag came out Abt had opened up enough of a gap that he cruised to third place. Brown’s wins took the overall. Mike Boyden was leading the fifteen other riders at the holeshot of +50B/C, but Paul Matsche slipped into the lead in the west end. Matsche’s time out front was

over before lap two began as Boyden pushed past him in the barn section. Edward Zelasko started the moto in third but midway through lap three John Dubiel got by him. Before the moto ended Ed Lovely and Gregg White got by Zelasko to claim third and fourth. Boyden stayed out front with Matsche right behind to the finish. Boyden was again first to the holeshot in moto two, staying out front until White made a pass stick. Before the checkers flew Matsche took over second and Lovely made a late moto pass to claim third. Matsche (2/2) won the overall with White (4/1) and Boyden (1/4) following. The most fun race of the day to watch is the Dual Shock class, when bikes from the beginning of the sport hit the track. The Mammoth Hunters is a group of guys dedicated to preserving their long lost youth by bringing the bikes of their youth back to life. This year

they displayed the old bikes, gear, and mementos of their racing history. They set everything up in the Short Track area and were more than happy to show it off to everyone that made it down to visit. When the Dual Shock class hit the

holeshot corner in moto one Jim Leach edged Mike Dean for the lead. Jade Wennlund pushed her way out front before she hit the plateau, but then her bike stalled in the final corner dropping her to the back of the class. The new leader was her father Don Wennlund, and he soon had a big enough gap that he was able to cruise to the win. Leach and Mark Wigdal got by Dean on lap three, then held on to their spots to the finish. Dean was out front at the beginning of moto two, but Don Wennlund was on the move and by midway through the first lap he was out front. Jade Wennlund moved past Dean in the barn section and then began chasing down her father. Jade Wennlund was on Don’s rear fender as they passed the scoring tower at the end of lap two, and then stuck the pass over the first tunnel jump. Jade Wennlund held on to the lead despite pressure in the final laps. A 1/2 day was enough to give Don Wennlund the overall ahead of Leach (2/3) and Dean (4/4). Jade Wennlund... “I guess those old bikes aren’t quite as reliable as the new ones. I came into a corner and it started bogging then died, I didn’t think I was going to get it started. Luckily I was able to and finish. I still had a huge smile on my face, I couldn’t believe I was leading the early part. Second moto there were two guys right in front of me and they were having quite a battle. I got by the first one and then the second one I was able to jump past soon after. I guess being younger makes it a little easier to take chances and jumping a little farther than some of the older guys. I caught my dad and got around him on the second lap. That last lap I went as fast as I possibly could to stay in front of him because I could hear him and another bike right on me. It was awesome out there on the old bike, but those bumps

really come through the suspensions and those tiny footpegs really hurt your feet.” The Senior Series consists of a great group of riders that hold the history of racing almost as important as the competition. Many people see senior racing and assume that the guys will be putting around the track, but again this year the racing was fast and exciting. Everyone left with new bench racing tales and a few new friends to meet up with again next year. he Belleville Enduro Team motorcycle club hasn’t run a hill climb in over ten years, but did August 24 at their beautiful club grounds near Belleville, Illinois. The reports from the riders were quite positive and we hope the club continues to host climbs in the future. Wade Schultz was a triple class winner on his big Suzuki, the first coming in the Open class. His second win came in the Senior class with a good 5.362 second time, with Mark Dunbar second and Eric Wheelwright third. Schultz won his third class in the one run King of the Hill class for the top riders of the

day. He sailed over the top in an excellent 5.127 seconds for the win. Wheelwright was second in 5.198 seconds with Dylan Brady third and Tom Goodnick fourth. Brodie Bennett was a double youth class winner, taking the 65cc and 85Jr classes. Lilah McGurer was second and Mitch Moran third in the 65cc class, while Jaydn Aliprandini claimed second with McGurer third in 85Jr. Andy Fortner was the best of the 85Sr riders, with Derick Bell second and Emily Schultz third. Eric Wheelwright was also a double class winner, his first the 250cc class with a 5.780 second run. Dylan Brady was second in 5.973 seconds and Jacob Bell third. Eric was also the best in the 600cc Four Stroke class, with an outstanding 5.099 second winning ride. Troy Camerer placed second with Matt Peters third. The Wheelwright family had a good day as Eric’s daughter, Morgan, was the Women’s class winner with Emily Schultz second. Morgan also claimed two

T

he Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders ran their final hillclimb of the year at their club grounds near White City, Illinois, and ‘Wild Wade’ Schultz put on a show with his big bore Suzuki, winning three classes with the three fastest times of the night. Schultz blazed over the hill in a sizzling 4.15 seconds to set the fast time of the night on his first ride in the Senior (+40) class, overtaking Jared McKay, who was sitting on the fast time bubble with a 4.24 second first round time in the 600cc class. Andy Fortner posted a good 4.297 second time for second in the Senior class, followed by Eric Wheelwright. McKay’s time held up for the 600cc class win with Andy Fortner second and Matt Peters third. Incredibly, Schultz delivered an identical 4.15 second ride in the second round in the Open class. But Wade saved his best for last, flying the roaring Suzuki over in 4.013 seconds to win the King of the Hill class for the ten fastest riders of the night. Eric Wheelwright was second with a 4.171 second time with Andy Fortner in third. Brodie Bennett was a double class winner in the youth classes. He claimed his first win in the 65cc class with a 6.636 second time on his second ride, the only rider to top the hill in the class. Lilah McGurer was second with a 121 foot effort with Jaydn Aliprandini only three feet behind her. Brodie’s second win came in the 85Jr class with a first round 6.223 second time. Johnny Boneau topped the hill in 6.919 seconds for second place, with Will Carlile third with a 118 foot ride. In other youth action, the Lowery bothers, Kaleb and Kolton, took first and second in the 50cc class with rides of 39 and 26 feet. In 85Sr ‘Little’ Andy Fortner put his CR85 over the top on both rides, running very consistently with times of 5.658 and 5.655 seconds to not only win the class but also claim the Youth Fast Time award. Derick Bell was second in 6.115 seconds with Emily Schultz third. Eric Wheelwright was also a double class winner, his first the 250cc class where he came from behind in the second round on his Yamaha for the win. Rob Noyes and Dylan Brady were the first round leaders with times of 4.938 and 4.974 seconds. In the second round, Brady moved ahead of Noyes, then Wheelwright surpassed them both with a 4.618 second time for the win. Wheelwright’s second win came in the 450cc class where he had to come from behind again. Troy Camerer set a very good 4.35 second time on his Suzuki to take the

first round lead, with Dylan Brady second. In the second round action, Matt Peters moved up with a 4.515 second time, but couldn’t overtake Brady. Wheelwright did, however, posting an excellent 4.234 second time for the win, moving Camerer and Peters to second and third. In Women’s action, Ali Harnish overtook Morgan Wheelwright and Emily Schultz in the second round for the win. Morgan carded a good 5.35 second time on her KTM200 in the first round, then improved it to 5.133 seconds on her second ride. But Harnish posted an even better 4.962 second time for the win on her Yamaha 250. Emily moved down to third with her 5.523 second first round ride on her KTM125.

Owen attacked the track and on the sand whoops where some riders had a struggled, he seemed to pick up speed. Honda rider Kyle Durham finished second with Channing Hunt third. In the second moto Owen again showed the fast way around the track. KTM rider Michael Norris finished second, but after a ninth in the first moto it left him fifth overall. Third was Honda rider Jacob Wever after a fifth in the first moto, good for fourth overall. Second overall went to Hunt with a fourth place finish. Third went to Durham (5-2). In the Open B class Collin Yenerich battled for the holeshot in the first moto, and then went on to take the win. Kawasaki rider Thomas Goodnick finished second with Colten Birk third. In the second moto Yenerich again was out front as Goodnick finished second. Third for the moto went to Hall’s Husky rider Paxton Kerber after a fifth in the first moto, good for fourth overall. Fourth in the moto was Birk on his Suzuki.

he Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club ran their last double-header weekend hillclimb of the year, and ‘Little Andy’ Fortner, Eric Wheelwright and Joe McGurer were the fast guys of the weekend. Young Fortner was the Youth Fast Time winner both days, winning the 85Sr class both days with times of 4.546 and 4.380 seconds. Derick Bell and Levi Peters followed him in second and third both days. Eric Wheelwright was the winner in both the 450cc and 600 4 stroke classes Saturday night. He came from behind in the second round to overtake Matt Peters who carded a 4.065 second on his first ride in the 450cc class, and improved it to 4.045 seconds in the second round, but had to settle for second place. Josh Denson was third. Riding the same bike in the four stroke class, Eric did a repeat, this time overtaking Denson who posted a 3.945 second run on his first ride to take the class lead and set the fast time to that point. Wheelwright’s second round 3.868 high flying ride was good for the class win, as well as the overall Fast Time of the Day award. Peters was third. 3.722 second time on his first ride, which was also fast time to that point. That time held up deep into the second round, when McGurer blitzed the hill in a sizzling 3.687 seconds for the class win on his KX500, and his time held up for the Fast Time award also. Jared McKay was third with a 3.913 second time on his Kawasaki. McGurer also claimed a win in the open Stock class Saturday night. Brady had a good weekend, posting double wins Saturday. His first came in the 250cc class with a 4.122 second time with Wheelwright second and McGurer third. In 600cc class action, Brady overtook McGurer with a Dalton Johnson in 85Sr. 3.924 second run in the second run to slip under Joe’s first round ride. Matt Peters was close in third. Wade Schultz scored a ‘double double’, winning the Open and Senior (+40) classes both days on his big, bad and fast Suzuki four banger. Wheelwright was his closest challenger both days in the Senior class. Kyle Galloway was third Saturday and Peters third Sunday. Other double class winners Sunday were Brodie Bennett, Levi Peters, Mike Pulver Morgan Wheelwright and Paul Hillard. Bennett claimed his wins in the 65cc and 85Jr classes, with Lilah McGurer and Mitch Moran running second and third in both classes. He also

took the 65cc win Saturday with McGurer and Moran following, but Moran was the Jr Mini winner with Bennett second and McGurer third. Peters was the 125cc and 250cc class winner. His 125cc win was no surprise, with Jake Bell and Emily Schultz second and third, but his 250cc win was an eye opener. The fourteen year old from Neoga took the first round lead with a nice 3.919 second time, which was actually fast enough for the win, but Levi beat it himself with an even faster 3.872 second run. Eric Wheelwright was second in 3.927 seconds with Josh Denson third. The class also included such fast guys as Joe McGurer, Andy Fortner and Dylan Brady, so young Levi scored a very impressive win. Veteran rider Mike Pulver picked up his wins in the Super Senior and Open Stock classes. He also took the Super Senior win Saturday night, so enjoyed a nice three win weekend. Morgan Wheelwright was the Women’s class winner both days, with Emily Schultz second and Lauren Shafer third Saturday. Lauren was second Sunday with Emily third Sunday. Morgan added the 200cc class win Sunday to make her a double winner, with Levi Peters second and Derick Bell third.

Day 2 Works at Tigerton Tigerton, Wisconsin - August 24 By Doug Forstner

F

antasy Moto held another double header weekend at the Embarrass River ATV Park and Campground. It was a good thing Sunday was the district 16 mx points race because Saturday’s non points race had to be cancelled after the first set of motos. Some of the racers were thinking of packing up on Saturday, but a quick reminder that the Fantasy Moto crew does everything they can to make sure you have a fantastic track to race on changed most that. The downpour that quickly came and went on Saturday transitioned into a nice campfire evening and the anticipation that Sunday racing would come around. Hard to believe you could have small rivers running through the track one day and decent conditions the next day. The composition of soil in Tigerton allows this to happen with the nice mix of sand and clay. The crew put in many hours scraping sludge off to get it ready. You would think by now that I would learn to pack my mud boots each and every race but no, I was forced to run around with just my summer flip flops all weekend. (Needless to say they went in the garbage at the end of the weekend as they were wet, muddy and a little ripe). As the day progressed the track really shaped up. Open A had Kyle Hameister winning moto one over Justin Wolf from Franklin, WI. In moto two, Wolf picked up a little more speed and captured the overall from Hameister by going 2-1. Hameister

#70 Brady Bill leading the 250C class pack in the first moto. He went on to sweep both motos.

made him work for it though as he hounded him all the way to the checkers. Chase Nystrom and Shane Scott also swapped moto finishes with Nystrom going 4-3 for the last spot on the podium. Vet B/C had Andy Bowman venture north to the Tigerton facility with his family, and he was able to go 1-1 beating out Brad Schiebe who went 2-3. Tom Wolf made a charge in moto two to take second but his sixth in moto one was only good enough for third overall. Ryan Jorns and Matt Kissner were battling both motos, with Jorns getting a pair of forths and Kissner going 3-5. 65cc 7-11 saw Dawson Lincoln run the tables and go 1-1 for the overall in the highly competitive 65cc class. Owen Haseleu was a strong second in the first moto but a dnf in moto two dropped him out of the overall. Isaac Thierrien used his consistent

250C class riders; #147 Riley Rew, #19 Travis Miller, #420 Drew Nordrum and #229 Nicholas Vanlyssel in the backgorund.

3-3 moto finished to take the second place position. Anthony Lindholm was also consistent going 4-4, enough to garner third overall. Luke Van Lyssel had a tough first moto and finished eighth, but came back with a second in moto two to finish fourth overall. One of the bigger classes on the day was 85cc 9-11. Carter Biese has been making waves all summer and he put his #43 Husqvarna on top of the box by going 1-1, and leading every lap. Jordan Biese was sec-

ond in moto one but didn’t finish the second moto. Wyatt Liebeck gave the Biese boys a run in both motos and his 3-2 scores got him second overall. Eugene Wolff from Reeseville went 4-3 for third. Kevin Gollubske from Stratford has been struggling with some bike set up this summer, and was on an unfamiliar bike but that didn’t stop him from posting a solid fourth overall. Hunter Swienton was super consistent going 6-6, good enough to round out the top five. It’s great to see all the youth classes with strong gate counts. This is the future of District 16 racing and we all need to continue to support these kids. So parents, when life has you down, there is nothing better than taking a kid to the track, so figure out a way to make it happen. Great Time at Wittenburg Wittenburg, Wisconsin - Aug. 16/17 By Doug Forstner Photos by Kaila Forstner

A

s summer winds down, sometimes it’s tough to find the time to mow the lawn, work on your projects around the house, do the back to school shopping, and everything else. But, if you race motocross, you must find time to plug the double headers into your schedule. Nothing beats a weekend of camping, relaxing and racing with friends and family after a week of work. As everyone rolled into the Wittenberg facility, they were greeted with a perfectly prepped track by the Fantasy Moto crew. Although the track sits off busy Hwy 29, it tucks behind the trees of the north woods to the point that most people who drive by never even know it’s there. The facility sits empty until this first weekend of racing, and the track actually gets better with more riders pounding laps. Watching Hunter Sayles won both 125Jr on Sunday it was Blake A classes on Sunday. Hansen from Kaukauna who pulled doni move into third place closely folthe holeshot. Brady Bill and local Branlowed by Bailey Otis who made the jump don Weber were hot on his heels followed from minis to the 125Jr. Max Steinhorst by Andrew Swienton and Marco Gravewas also on the move and made his way doni. Swienton was able to get around into the top five. At the checkers it was Weber for third, but then on lap three, Hansen out front, followed by Bill, and a Swienton went down and we saw Graveclose battle between Gravedoni, Steinhorst and Otis. Moto two again saw Hansen rocket out to the lead on his KTM. Swienton also had a great start, pursueing in second. Gravedoni, Steinhorst and Bill followed. Steinhorst moved into third on the second

Gage Nuebauer with a solid 3-3 day in 65Jr.

lap behind Swienton and Otis was also on the move breaking into the top five. Bill went down which allowed Otis some breathing room. At the checkers, Hansen wrapped up a perfect 1-1 with Swienton second followed by Steinhorst, Otis and Bill. Peewee Jr had different moto winners on the day. In moto one it was Deegan Vanvreede who took the checkers in first followed by Owen Blakely, Lane Rhyme, Brody Barth and Carson Syverson rounding out the top five. Moto two it was Blakely out front followed by Syverson. Blake Duchateau and Kyler Gollubske were giving chase to Rhyme and Barth to see who would end up in the top five. At the finish it was Blakely with the win, Syverson second and Barth beating out Rhyme for the last spot on the podium. Although this is the smallest class to race the track, sometimes they provide the most entertainment. The track for the most part sits on flat land, making it pretty rider friendly for all classes. The Peewee’s get to ride the entire track, which after talking to one of the riders, he said it is a blast because they feel like they belong just like the bigger riders. 50Sr was led by Ayden Price. Price was by Nathan Postma, Ben Blazek Aiden Columbo, and Nolan Schweighardt in moto one. Brody Tobianski and Gage Neubauer were close to top five finishes. In moto two, again Price got out front early and started to gap the field. Schweighardt had a better start and settled

into the number two spot followed by the battle of Blazek, Tobianski and Columbo. For the overall Price went 1-1, Schweighardt 5-2 for second, Columbo rounded out the podium with a 4-3. Blazek and Tobianski filled out the top five. If you haven’t been to a Fantasy Moto event yet, make sure to put the next one your calendar as the crew puts in a huge effort to make sure conditions, safety, food, and everything that goes with an event is as close to perfect as possible. My favorite part is the riders meeting where they like to give out some cool door prizes, but if you don’t show up for the meeting you not only get called out for missing it, but you miss out on some cool prizes. The only bad part to such a good weekend is that you have to go back to work on Monday.

Trials Fun at “Smagical Rock” Mauston, Wisconsin - September 6/7 By Kevin & Shari Huber

O

n September 6th and 7th the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association event was held on Noel Smage’s land near Mauston. Noel is the father of seven time National Trials Champion Pat Smage. You may remember Pat when he was on America’s Got Talent with his brother Phil showing their trials skills. Pat was able to attend on Sunday to show his ability to defy gravity to the rest of the riders. This gives us all something to aspire to. It also gave Pat some practice time. This came in handy since he would be leaving a few days later for Europe to compete with a team from the US in the Trial Des Nation contest held on September 14th. Phil was unable to attend the weekend trials event. He is currently playing Captain America in the Marvel Universe Live thrill show that is touring the country. As part of his performance Phil performs stunts on his bike in the show. Noel’s land has some extreme rock faces that Pat is able to train on. The WOTA members are not at the same professional level that Pat is. The sections had to be designed with all the different skill levels of the local riders in mind. The goal is to challenge all, but not make it so

hard that they get discouraged. The real big stuff was left for Pat. The land has a lot of sandy areas that lead to the slopes, rocks and log obstacles. Recent rains helped to firm up the sand making for excellent riding conditions. The weather during the contest was excellent, with temperatures in the mid 70’s. The scores made it evident that the sections were set up correctly for the mix of contestants present. Super Millville Hare Scrambles Millville, Minnesota - September 14 By Keith McKenna

W

hat could be finer than a Sunday gathering with great racing friends for a little race through wooded southeastern Minnesota on a cool autumn, sun filled day? Word of the beautiful healing powers of the Millville Hare Scrambles race must be reaching other motorcycle racing genres, as a number of District motocross racers came out to enjoy a bit of friendly competition. In addition to the motocross racers, an AMA Pro Flat track racing phenom also made an appearance. The trail crew put together a very fast course of mostly ATV width trail that made for some pretty furious battles in many classes. Newly minted Women’s Pro Motocross racer Shayanna Wilson came ready for battle, and to avenge her bad luck at last year’s event. This year Shay kept it on two wheels for almost the entire race where she would have a see-saw battle with last year’s class champ and current points leader, Mary Schreiner. The lead traded back and fourth almost every lap. Most laps the top two were within five seconds of each other at scoring. On lap five Wilson hooked a tree branch with her helmet, ripping her off of the back of her motorcycle. By the time she re-mounted, Schreiner had passed and went to the line just in time to be granted an additional lap over the rest of the class. In the Premier class, a betting man would have put money down on Devon Jirik as the odds on favorite for the win. It certainly looked like a winning bet until lap seven of nine where problems would deny Jirik of yet another victory. That would give the lead to Austin Nelson. Nelson completed nine laps with Jarrett Loegering coming through the scoring loops in the silver position and Bailey McCarthy rounding out the podium. There’s an incentive in the Spring Creek MX Super Series title chase to garner a few extra valuable points by participating in the Hare Scrambles race. Those points were enticement enough to get a few MX veterans to try off-road racing for the first time. One such racer is Jesse John. Not only did John come away with points toward the MX championship, he also brought home third place hardware in the 42

Senior C class. Another hare scrambles newbie, Dave Williams finished in fifth place. Williams after the race could hardly contain his enthusiasm along with John, on how much fun the course was. Finishing ahead of John was off-road regulars Jason Naughton (winner) and second place David Dempster. Another racer doing a little bit of crossover was Travis Muller, who finished the 250B fracas in third place behind class regular Gary Stoudt and winner Mark Schreiner. Muller contests many MX races throughout the season, and in the snowy season he is multi-time winner in the ultra competitive ISOC Pro-Snocross Series Lites Division. In the 250A class, AMA Pro Flattrack front runner Jake Mataya was having a solid race on his Yamaha YZ250 till his rear sprocket and hub disintegrated rendering the bike motionless. Meanwhile, Austin Pogreba was working his way up from fourth place at the end of the first lap to hold second for two laps before finally taking the lead to the finish on lap four. It was a fight to the end for the KTM speedster as he came through the loops just ahead of the hard charging Matt Lindeberg and the Honda wheelman Kevin Plzak. And for the big show- The AA class was of course the first wave off of the line in the afternoon race.

There were so many fast guys on the line for this race, with many state and championships among them. There was a spoiler in the mix as well, being Alex Martin, AMA Pro Motocross twelfth place finisher in 2014. Martin grew up riding the Spring Creek trails, as his family owns the facility where the legendary Millville MX National race is held every summer, so he really knows the terrain. After a fourth

Premier class rider Roan Buchholz working his way through the grass track.

Part of the field prior to the start of the AA, A&B race... another great turn-out in a perfect setting.

place start to the first turn, Martin used his pro motocross prowess to pass everyone in the charge through the legendary “SandWash” to lead into the woods. AA points leader Nate Ferderer had a very good pace going and was able to dice with the race leader, even putting a nice pass on Martin halfway through the first lap. In all the haste, Martin bobbled and crashed, but was able to re-mount quick, and reel Ferderer back in. Even though Ferderer had a really good pace going, Martin passed for the lead for good on lap three. On the fourth lap things went south for Ferderer as the #77 of Tim Nienow circumnavigated his way around to grab second place. Not only did Nienow make a pass but so did Nate’s title rival Dylan Debel on his CheckPoint Off-Road/ Motorex Honda CRF250. It turned out that the grounding pin on the spark plug of Ferderer’s GasGas 300 broke off. The results of this were very inconsistent running with a tendency to stall easily. Once the bike would stall, bump starting was the only way to relight the fire. A dicey affair for certain. Ferderer limped the bike home for a fourth place, salvaging valuable points with three rounds to go in the series. Typically Tim Nienow is finishing at around fifth place, but today he had his mojo working for sure. Congrats to him on a very solid podium finish. By race’s end the temps had risen into the mid sixties with a light breeze. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect day to race.

After the checkered flag, race winner Martin pulled off his helmet and said he had so much fun in the race that the two hours it took to complete the scrum didn’t seem any longer than the motos he runs during his pro motocross events. At the end of the day, all the racers were smiling like little tots eating their Christmas pudding. Big thanks to all of the Spring Creek staff for yet another fantastic event.
