New Motorcycle Trails in Wisconsin. Who says you can't get new single-track trail in Wisconsin? Not the Jackson County Trail Riders Club members and volunteers. This near perfect July day we enjoyed a great day of trail riding on the new single-track motorcycle only trails in the Jackson County Forest. The new McKenna Loop was opened for riding in 2010. The new loop adds ten miles of singletrack trail to the motorcycle-only part of the trail system. As we left the park we met riders coming in from Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. All coming to enjoy this great trail riding area. The new trail was the result of nearly ten years of working with the Jackson County Forestry and Parks staff, plus the Jackson County Board. Hours and hours of meetings and field work by Jack Potter, Becky (Potter) Hayes, Craig Hayes and others made this new trail possible.We now have around thirty miles of single-track trail that can be accessed from the Crawford Hills ATV and Motorcycle Park and trailhead. This effort rejuvenates the trail system that was created some thirty years ago. But this is just the start. We heard it back in the 80's and we heard it in the 2000's from nearly everyone, "The problem is, you guys have got to get organized". A club like the Jackson County Trail Riders in every county would be great, especially to work for local trails. But we also need to be organized to work at the state level. Here is big news! We already have that organization. The Wisconsin Off Highway Motorcycle Association represents, riders, businesses, organizations and anyone who loves off highway motorcycle riding. We have already obtained support by a State Senator and a State Representative for draft language for a registration system in Wisconsin that will help fund the efforts for off highway motorcycle trails and future OHV motorized parks. Over the past two years WOHMA (Wisconsin Off Highway Motorcycle Association) has been working with the AMA, NOHVCC (National Off Highway Vehicle Conservation Council), and motorcycle clubs and enthusiasts throughout the state

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... to bring forward a proposed OHM registration program to accomplish these goals. We are currently in discussion with State Representative Jeffrey Mursau, State Senator Jim Holperin and others to help bring the effort forward. Preliminary steps the past two years have included many meetings with the Wisconsin DNR, the Wisconsin County Foresters Association, and shortly with the Wisconsin DOT in preparation for this effort. Conversations have also taken place with the Wisconsin State Trails Council and the Wisconsin Off Road Vehicle Council (which now has an off road motorcyclist on it). WOHMA invites all riders to contact their Wisconsin State Senators and Representatives and ask them to support an Off Highway Motorcycle registration program and shared OHV motorized recreational areas. You can find their contact information at the www.legis.wisconsin.gov website. This fall is the big push to get the registration program officially submitted so it can be introduced for discussion and voting in the next legislative session. Please help and contact the legislators that are needed to carry the program forward in support of our request. You would also be well served to read the documents on the state website so you understand the steps needed in order to have legislation submitted and voted on. Motocross Safety

By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman In a sport that has inherent dangers should we look for safer ways to race, build tracks, and protective equipment? Should there be a body or group of people that can set a few standards that make what we do as safe as possible. To me the very idea of others controlling what we do and how we do it goes against everything I believe. We have always held the belief that if an obstacle such as a jump or drop away is more than we feel capable of then we should ride the obstacle at the appropriate speed or seek an alternative route if that is possible. Lets face it, racers all have their own fortes. Jumps come easy for some while hard pack fast track suit others, and mud suits the few. It has always been left up to the promoter to do as he/she pleases with track construction. This worked fine for many years. As with all sports the sport of motorcycle racing has evolved in many different ways. Whether it be off road racing or MX we have seen tremendous changes over the last two decades. The driving forces behind these changes are related to many intermingled factors. Chief among these factors is Supercross. Supercross has arguably been the best thing for our sport’s visibility. Along with that visibility has come the inevitable pro level fallout that you see in most sports. Motocross tracks have become increasingly more like supercross when it comes to jump design. Peaked jumps, jumps with concave approach ramps that launch racers more up than out have replaced the older style jumps. Double and triples get bigger and longer just like the SX tracks. The whoop sections get built higher with erratic spacing that calls for better suspension and riding technique. The argument being that it is these objects that separate the men from the boys, the fast from the slow. This is a nice theory but it has yet to be proven in motocross especially when you have such a large number of racers with such disparate skill levels. If your track caters only to the pros some of this may work fine. Add racers from four years old to over sixty, with skill levels from professional to the first time on the track racer and in my opinion you have a recipe for injuries. Motorcycle design, in chassis, suspension and engines has also changed dramatically over the last few years. Many people believe the advent of the 4 stroke has had a marked impact on the rate of injuries. This may be true but as of yet there is nothing to back it up other than opinion. Track design has changed as bike design has improved. Speeds have increased significantly. The amount of air that racers are getting on jumps borders on the insane and has actually gotten to the point where racers are scrubbing to lose altitude on jumps. This is a move that has caused numerous crashes as the sideways bikes collide in the air or the racers have been unable to get them straightened before landing. The multitude of factors makes it very diffi-

cult to pinpoint any one factor as being more significant than another when it comes to riding/racing injuries. We really have our work cut out for us if we are going to learn better ways to construct tracks, bikes and our protective equipment. For those of you old enough to remember the really old days, back to the beginning of off road racing as we know it today I have a question for you. In the past 40 years what changes have we seen in helmet technology for our protection against impacts? We are going faster on more powerful bikes getting higher than ever on jumps and our helmets are basically the same as they were 40 years ago. The changes have been slight. The shells are now much lighter and many are vented and come with fancy paint jobs. Most have in integral face guard with a wide vision area for goggles and they have thicker washable fabric padding. While these are nice improvements they are strictly for comfort. They still contain the same old hard Styrofoam liners they did way back when. If we can build space stations and keep delicate instruments working after being dropped on the moon I refuse to believe we can not come up with a helmet system that will absorb the harmful impact versus just dull it a bit and then pass it on the head. Why bring all this up now? Quite simply because it is in the forefront. Many agencies and groups are looking at youth sports injury rates. The year 2010 has not been good for us and we just lost another young racer at Loretta’s, that makes four that I know of this year. Seems too high to me. However my real concern here lies in the fact that our sport attracts an extremely large number of youth racers. Many youth sports are under scrutiny right now and there is really an intense move to study and reduce the number of concussions occurring in all sports. If we were an adult only sport we would be off the radar so to speak. Youth level involvement takes us to a new level. And in my opinion we need to look at our sport objectively. Can we do better? The answer as I see it is an unqualified YES. What is the answer if we are to keep outside governmental agencies off our backs and out of our sport? Simply get serious about safety. How do we do it? Where do we start? It is a difficult question to answer but we have many people in our sport looking at helping to get answers to these questions. First and foremost a child never gets on the bike without all of his or her protective equipment. This includes at a very minimum a high quality properly fitting helmet, appropriately sized goggles, gloves and boots, hard plastic chest and back protector, and a neck brace. Secondly do not take your kids to the tracks that you feel have poorly designed obstacles or layout. In my opinion at the amateur level there is no need for double triple or quad jumps. Supercross obstacles should be a left for the pros. Colorado has come up with specific training and an attendant test for motocross medics. I

am really interested in this as this is a huge step in the right direction. Think about it, have you ever been to a ski hill that did not have specially trained Ski Patrol medical aid personnel? This year for the first time there will be an International safety forum held in conjunction with the Motocross of Nations. This is great and I hope to bring back all the innovations and new ideas that are being considered or tested in some areas. It is time for us to get serious if we are to save our sport and keep it growing. As a sport we need to make safety equipment mandatory before the youth racers get onto the start line. There is not another youth sport that I can think of that allows participants the latitude to use or not use safety equipment. This movement is getting serious steam and will be a hot topic into the next few seasons. I will relate all that I learn about it so we can make better decisions. As always I welcome your ideas and feedback, while we may not always agree on all points, all feedback is useful. Please let me know if you think we can and should look to improve our safety record. I do not want to leave you with the idea that all is bleak because it isn’t. One of the things that I have learned is that our injury rate when put into the context of total participation time is fairly low. That is a good thing, however when the injuries occur they are usually of a more serious nature than those of other sports. This is the fact that garners attention and results at times in negative impact on our sport. One study points out the fact that 30 percent of our youth injuries are concussions. We are working on setting up an easy to use protocol so you will know as a racer or parent when it is safe to go back to racing. This is also another fact that I feel points to the total inadequacy of today’s helmets. Rest assured that my only goal is to see that our sport of off-road racing in all its forms survives and prospers. Here in district 23 we actively took on the noise problem that arose with the introduction of the 4 strokes. We have had success as a result of those actions although it was not always a painless process. I know that we can have the same or even greater success with our injury numbers. As my dad told me many years ago about issues of this nature, “if you don’t police yourself some else will do it for you and you most likely won’t be able to live with their rules”. We have already seen this with land closures, restrictions or bans on practice tracks on private property. Lets improve ourselves together of our own accord. Lowering our injury rate and working to make tracks more friendly for younger and less skilled racers is a win-win. The really fast guys win in corners not on 100’ triples. Just a few thoughts to ponder as we look to the future that I hope will be even brighter than our past. As always I hope to see you all on the tracks and trails of Minnesota.... Mike

unset Ridge was the first stop in the Racer X Senior Series kicking off a four race series that takes place at some of the best tracks in the Midwest. Saturday’s event brought about 150 vet entries from all over the area, not as many as they had hoped for due to the week’s weather, but still a great turnout to kick off the weekend. Sunset Ridge was just recently added to the lineup and according to series regular Dave Antolak, “The riders were very pleased with the track and we look forward to keeping Sunset on the schedule for years to come”. Sunday’s race housed over 300 entries for what turned out to be yet another beautiful day at Sunset Ridge. The track conditions were nothing short of perfect as practice got underway on Sunday. The track got pretty rough offering the riders a bit of a challenge, but with the help of water and a little TLC it stayed mint all day. Open C kicked things off with seventeen riders lining the gate. Nick Inman of Chilli-

cothe, Illinois captured the holeshot in moto one and checked out from the rest of the pack right away. Dustin Weber got a good start with Luke Shafer and Nick Stiles hanging close behind. Weber and Shafer battled early on and Shafer finally made his move around Weber towards the middle of the moto, cutting to the inside in the corner, stealing second away. Weber continued to fall back, losing the third spot to Brandon Benner and fourth to Robert Vitullo. Vitullo then put a block pass on Benner to take over third, which he secured for the rest of the moto behind Shafer and Inman. Moto two went the same for Inman as he bolted out front on the start and never looked back. Weber clenched the second spot right out of the hole, but Wyatt Edwards and Vitullo weren’t letting him out of their sight. Cody Ruschke got a bad start but began charging through the pack until he made a couple of mistakes, causing him to hang back in seventh. Inman took the moto two win and the overall, followed by Vitullo with a 3-2 for second and Shafer going 2-3 for the third overall. Rounding out the top five was Weber

(6-4) and Edwards (8-5). Joey Dalzell had an impressive day, sweeping the 14-24 class on his 250 twostroke. Dalzell grabbed the holeshot in moto one with Ryan Smith and Nick Latour close behind. John Pogliano, Zack Scott and Kyle Lindahl were mixing it up for fourth by mid moto. Latour finally made his way around Smith for second and held on until the finish. Dalzell checked out on the rest of the pack, claiming the moto one victory. Smith ended up with third followed by Scott and Pogliano. Dalzell got the holeshot in moto two, with the usual suspects Scott, Smith and Latour close behind. Scott and Pogliano had an intense battle going. Scott finally made his way around Pogliano, setting his sights on Latour who had just made the pass on Smith for second. On the last lap, Smith got taken out two corners before the finish as he was coming through lapped traffic, causing him to finish seventh and take fifth overall. Dalzell steered clear of the crashes, taking the first overall with Latour behind for second. Scott took the third overall with a 4-3 and Pogliano took fourth with 5-4.

Towards the end of the line up for the day was the Quad A class, and these boys were rearing to go as the gate dropped and Ethan Pickard of Pearl City, Illinois grabbed the holeshot. Jason Wehrli was right there on his tail as Pickard tried his hardest to stay out front. Justin Medine rode a comfortable race in third while Charlie Snow did the same,

both securing their third and fourth spots for moto one. Kyle Hall and Dillan Boeke caught up to Snow at the end of the race as he faded back, but Snow managed to hold them off until the finish. Moto two saw Wehrli grab the holeshot followed by Pickard and the Suzuki of Snow. Wehrli and Pickard were having a great race

until Pickard started to slow down and look down at his feet. Pickard had lost his entire foot peg set up on his 4 wheeler, causing him to have to pull off. This allowed Snow to move into second, still a ways back from Wehrli. On the final lap, Medine turned it up a notch giving Snow some competition for second. The two went side by side over the jump, Medine inching out Snow and taking over second place. Dillon Boeke got off to a bad start but moved his way into sixth, taking sixth overall for the day. Wehrli grabbed the overall with 2-1 and Medine followed behind for second. Snow went 4-3 for third with Kyle Hall (5-5) showing some consistency for fourth and Pickard still savaged a fifth overall. Part of the facility that not many people get the chance to see is the Pee Wee track at the bottom of the hill. Upon entering the track, I noticed that there were several young girls down there mixing it up with the boys, which is an amazing thing to see for the future of women’s motocross. Three year old Caylee Crouch of Morton, Illinois was out there for her first race ever, in a class where almost every rider was hauling a set of training wheels. Catching up with Caylee after her moto, she said, “I liked the jumps”, when asked what her favorite part of the track was. Seven year old Brooklyn Mcdonald of Peoria competed in the 50cc 4-8 class and took an impressive sixth place in a class full of boys. Although this was Brooklyn’s first time racing Sunset Ridge, this was her third race ever and she says she would like to continue riding more as she gets older. Another future Women’s class rider was ten year old Madi Mandelke of Stillman Valley, Illinois, riding in the 65 beginner class. Madi has been riding for three years and plans to continue as well. “My favorite part about racing motocross is beating the boys, and going over the jumps,” Madi said after her moto where she finished a very impressive third. iven that this is the 25th anniversary for the Stoney Lonesome Championship Hare Scramble Series, it seemed appropriate that the club was able to obtain the historic power line property and move the starting line. Many years ago, the Stoney Lonesome MC used the hilltop power line for their hare scramble race starts. Due to easement and ownership issues, that access was lost until recently. The Peewee racers start remained in the original location with a course that consisted of fast trails and wind dropped trees which they rode under. Hunter Huser was challenged early in the Peewee Mix race by Louden and Camden Feltner. Huser finally took over the lead on the seventh lap and held on for a 0:13 victory over Louden Feltner. Reed Day and Lance Maschino fought for the

Injector lead throughout the race with Day edging out the win at the checkered. The mini course covered over 2.5 miles of the Stoney Lonesome property while avoiding the notorious obstacles. Luke Chilman led the Super Mini class down the power line and into the first turn entering the woods. Tyler Vore hung close throughout the first few laps maintaining a fifteen second deficit. Chilman maintained his fast pace winning by 1:05 over Vore despite his continued struggle with a tingling sensation in his hands.

Michael Witkowski put together a solid race at Stoney and led every lap landing the coveted 85cc victory. Eric Douglass was hammering on the first lap coming through the check in second place. Keagen Lee worked his way into second place, closely followed by Jaden Smith who had worked up from a fifth place start. Vincent Smith was once again the first 65cc rider through the gates, but was feeling the pressure of Dawson Dunnuck and John Henry Robinson right on his wheel.

Smith and Dunnuck swapped the lead during the second lap until Smith finally regained it and returned to his smooth riding style. The battle for second place came down to the last lap where Robinson capitalized on a late race crash by Dunnuck. The Big Bike race consisted of 94 entries in the event, wrestling their machines through the trails with seven riders eventually finishing all eight laps. The scoring team held up well throughout the event, recording 511 entries at the checkpoint. In the hunt for the overall victory, John Robbins was burning on the first lap, turning a 13:17 lap time, followed 0:02 later by Nathan Sullivan and Jeff Cregg. Hot on the heels of the leaders were David Dunnuck and Jordan Johns looking to make up time on the leaders. The race was young - there were still plenty of opportunities for any of them to take the win. Robbins maintained his lead at the end of lap two with Cregg moving up to second. Johns kept a cool head and staked a claim on third, but with a 0:07 disadvantage. Sullivan had dropped to fourth with Daniel Sims claiming the fifth place spot.

Cregg had taken the lead by lap three with Robbins dropping to third. Coming through the checkpoint in second, Sullivan was thinking - "Step aside folks, I'm on a roll." At that point there was only 0:12 separation between himself and first place. The mid race excitement was not only building for the overall activity, it was intensifying back in the Heavy B class. Taylor Day was on a roll throughout the first five laps of the race leading the Hvy B class, but feeling the pressure from Luke Chilman. Chilman was riding a borrowed 250 4 stroke following his Super Mini victory only one hour earlier. At the end of lap six, Day had given way to Chilman who was starting to set the pace on the track leading by 1:33. Chilman stayed on the gas and kept the lead to the checkered flag, catching many riders from the rows ahead of him. In the overall, the checkered flag had Cregg still in the lead, followed by Sullivan. Coming through the checkpoint in third was Johns. Robbins owned fourth place while Sims kept a cool head and staked a claim on fifth. he Central Illinois Motorcycle Club held a hill climb doubleheader at their clubgrounds near Neoga, Illinois. The Saturday night event found Josh Denson to be the fastest rider of the evening, with Joe McGurer, Andy Fortner, Jeff Jack and Matt Peters all claiming double class wins. Denson got his fast time in the always large and fast 600cc class on his KX500. His 3.611 second time on his first ride had him way down in 10th place at the end of the first round, with Jared McKay in the lead with a 3.136 second time. But in the second round, Jake Tackitt flew his KX500 over the top in 3.020 seconds to take the lead, only to see Denson blitz the hill in 2.865 seconds on his Kawasaki to take the class win and the over-

all fast time award. McKay improved on his first ride also, but his 3.023 second time left him in third place. McGurer got his first win in the 125cc class over Lucas Learnard. His second win came in Open Stock where he came from behind to overtake Ben Elson who took the first round lead with a 2.903 second time on the ‘short’ hill. McGurer posted a 2.893 second run on his second run to take the win, with Denson claiming third. Jeff Jack made his trip from Wappella, Iowa worthwhile by taking the 200cc class win on his KTM with a good 3.408 second first round run. Tackitt was second on his vintage KDX with Chris Senn third on a KTM. Jack’s second win came in the Super Senior (+50) class with a 3.443 second first round run on his KX500. Tom Rollins claimed second with Keith Klett third. Matt Peters sailed his CR250 over the top in 3.186 seconds on his first ride in the 250cc class, and passed on his second ride as no one was able to match that time all night in the class. Jon Creek claimed second on his RM250 with McGurer taking third. Peters had to work harder to win the 450cc class, as he crashed hard on his first ride, and had to come from behind to overtake Cody Jenner who took the first round lead with a 3.109 second time on his Honda. Peters held on to his KTM380 on his second ride to take the win with a 3.063 second high flying ride. Dan Groth also slipped under the Jenner time with a 3.104 second run for second place. Andy Fortner sailed his CR500 over in 3.258 seconds on his first ride to take the lead in the Senior (+40) class, and that was good for the class win. Jeff Jack was second in 3.290 seconds with Jon Creek third. In youth class action, Levi Peters was the 50cc class winner with Brodie Bennett second. ond time, with Hutton second. Lauren Shafer was the 85Sr winner. The 2010 D17/Illinois State Hill Climb Championships were run on Sunday, with Joe McGurer claiming three titles. Levi Peters was a double youth class winner and Jake Tackitt took two amateur class wins. The coveted Fast Time award went to ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner. McGurer’s first win came in the 125cc class, his 3.717 second time on his KX125 holding up for the win. Lucas Learnard and Nick Fortner were second and third. In the 250cc class he again took the first round lead, this time with a 3.212 second run on his KX250. In the second round both Matt Peters and Jon Creek slipped under his first round time with runs of 3.083 and 3.087 seconds. McGurer responded with a high flying 3.056 second run on his second run to take the win.

McGurer completed his three class sweep by winning the Open Stock class on his CRF450. His first round was very fast, but had him in second place behind veteran Mike Pulver, who posted a 2.935 seconds on his CR500. McGurer grabbed a fistful of throttle and held it on for his second run, sailing over the top in 2.876 seconds for the win – his third state title! Pulver had to settle for second with Al Petty third. Tackitt rode his KDX200 to the 200cc championship. His 3.535 second first round time was good for the win, with KTM riders Jeff Jack and Chris Senn claiming the next two spots. Tackitt’s first ride in the 600cc class was also good enough for that win. His 3.025 second run set the early overall fast time as well. Dan Groth and Josh Denson came in second and third. Andy Fortner once again lived up to his nickname and proved that old guys can still be fast guys. Riding his CR500 in the Senior (+40) class, he flew high over the top of the hill in 2.964 seconds on his first ride. He was the only rider of the day to break into the two’s, as that time held up for the rest of the day for the Senior class win, and the Overall Fast Time award. Jon Creek and Mark Peters placed in the next two spots in the class. Faith, Audette skirmish at the Clash Millville, Minnesota - August 29 By Rolfe Otterness

he third annual version of the Viking Clash at Spring Creek Park featured some ferocious battles between two young moto warriors, Gavin Faith and Gannon Audette. These two were definitely on the gas and charging as they dominated the action in three A classes. Although Audette now calls Georgia home, he lived and raced in Minnesota for many of his years, and has many accumulated laps on the Spring Creek track. Faith has been racing here a lot in the last few years, and his recent experience on the track seemed to give him just a bit of an edge over Audette. Both riders were running strongly on the amateur circuit this summer, with Audette winning at Lorreta Lynn’s. The track was in pretty decent shape for the approximately 500 entries that made it to the Clash. The $5000 purse made it a bit more tempting for the A riders, and there was a good number of entries going for the green. The rest of the riders were in the running for huge trophies, and the pure enjoyment of motocross on one of the country’s top tracks. First moto up for the A riders was the 1424 class. Faith motored into the lead and Audette latched onto his tail. Audette was pressuring heavily and nearly took the lead early in the race but flubbed up a bit just after the uphill triple and lost a bit of time. Faith maintained the lead until the last lap when Audette made his move on the downhill when Faith encountered some lapped traffic. Audette had just a quarter of a lap to hang on and

took the win with Faith close behind. The bad news for both riders was a penalty from the track referee, as they were not backing off the throttle under the yellow flag which was out for a rider down in the whoops. With the penalties they were dropped back a couple of places and Dalton Carlson and Bruce Dehn were awarded first and second. Moto two’s holeshot went to Audette. Faith was quickly into second with Carlson settling into third over Dehn. Audette held onto the lead for the duration of the moto with Faith running virtually the same pace, but unable to close. As the checkered was unleashed, Audette took the win with about two seconds over Faith. Carlson held on for third. Dehn and Jake Loberg soon cruised in for fourth and fifth. In the 250A class, Audette jumped out to the early lead in moto one with Faith in pursuit. Audette dropped back into the pack on the second lap, giving Faith firm grasp of the moto. Faith went on to take a solid win over Carlson and Bruce Dehn while Audette recovered enough to take fifth from Loberg on the last lap. Faith pushed to the front in moto two while Audette suffered from a

poor start and had to push forward. Faith went in for another win with Carlson riding well for second. Audette made a good charge on the last lap to take third while battling with Ben Graves and Nick Jackson over the last part of the race. Faith led moto one in the Open A class, holeshotting and then maintaining just a bit of a gap over Audette for the duration. They established a pretty good lead over Carlson, “Scooter” Jendro and Dehn before the flag came out. Moto two was similar with Faith prevailing after a moto long challenge from Audette who ran just a second or two behind all the way. Jendro managed to take third after battling with Carlson and Dehn. Faith commented after the day’s racing that he has been training at the Milsaps Training Facility (MTF) and most likely would run as an amateur for one more year before tackling the pro circuit. the same mind-set, looking at one more year before going pro unless some exceptional offer comes along. Good luck to both on their careers. Checking out some of the riders that might be on top of the Clash money classes in a few years, one of the classes where talent is developed is in the 85â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. In 85 9-11 Ben Anderson snared a holeshot to lead early in the first moto over Trey Moore and Mateo Johnson. All three riders were cruisinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pretty good but Anderson edged out a bit of a gap and took the win by about six seconds when the flag waved. Moore and Johnson maintained their order for the podium positions with Alan Spaeth and Luke Hempen rounding out the top five. Moto two was a display of ultra-consistency as the top five riders repeated their first moto performance to make things easier for the scorers. Kalaher took his first win in the 85Sr class with a 129 foot effort on his KX85, with Shon Calvert in second and Tanner King third. Kalaher came back in the next class with his Yamaha to top the hill in 4.411 seconds in the 125cc class on his first ride, and that time held up for the class win. Joe McGurer was second on his Kawasaki in 4.698 seconds with Lucas Learnard third. Mike ‘the ‘Pulverizer’ Pulver took his first win in the Senior class, but had to come from behind to do it, as he crashed at 50 feet on his first ride. Jon Creek delivered the first round fast time in the class with a 3.662 second run, but he slipped to fourth in the second round as Pulver, Fortner and Mark Peters all carded better times, with Pulver’s 3.452 seconds claiming the win with Fortner second.

ake Tackitt made his first appearance of the 2010 hill climbing season and made his presence felt by winning both classes he entered as well as setting the Fast Time of the night at the Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders night hill climb. His first win came in the 200cc class on his vintage KDX200 where he overcame Chris Senn in the second round for the win. Senn posted a 4.163 second run on his KTM in the first round to take the lead, but Tackitt responded with a 3.989 second time in the second round. Kyle Galloway took third on his KDX. Tackitt’s fast time came on his first ride in 600cc class on his CR500. ate summer always seems to be a very interesting time at the races for many reasons. There’s those first couple of weeks in August where we are always short a few riders due to the various national championships. Then there are always a few who just can’t seem to cope with the usual high humidity and temperatures. There are usually a few riders moving themselves up in class for one reason or another and a few new riders who decide that they want to try Motocross before the end of the summer. Fun Valley’s weekend of racing in August had all of these circumstances and more with great weather, a great track and a great crowd of racers and spectators to make the weekend even more special. dance, there seemed to always be some great racing going on every time you watched the action. One of the most dominant performances of the weekend was that of Marissa Busby, who swept all of her Women’s class motos for the weekend with speed, style and grace. In Saturday’s Women’s class moto one, Busby left the line with the front-end a few inches off the ground as she poured the power on up the long start. As Busby rounded the first turn, the only riders close to her were Hailee McDonald and Darcy Goette. Busby headed up the huge hill and over the steep double with ease. McDonald, Goette and the rest of the class were doing their best to keep up, but it already looked as if it could be Busby’s day to pull away from the rest of the competitive class. At the end of the first lap, Busby had built a seven second lead over McDonald. Keshia Cooke had worked her way past Goette for third and Stormie Bonazza had moved into fifth. On lap two, Busby had caught up to some of the +30 riders

who left the line ten seconds ahead of the Women in the combined moto. McDonald and Cooke seemed to be pretty evenly matched and were within a couple of seconds of each other for the entire lap. By the final lap Busby made it pretty clear that she intended to win this moto by gapping the rest of the field by nearly thirty seconds. At the finish, McDonald held on for second just ahead of Cooke. Bonazza was able to hold off a late moto charge by Goettte who rounded out the top five. The final moto started out very similar with Busby and McDonald out front. This time, Cooke had a much better start and was right behind as the pair went over the up-hill doubles at the top of the picturesque course. Cooke and McDonald traded places a few times as the race went on. On lap three, Cooke was able to make the pass stick and put two seconds on McDonald. Goette made a late moto pass on Bonazza and held on for fourth for the moto. Busby’s two moto sweep made her the day’s champion. Cooke’s three-two moto finishes earned her second ahead of McDonald. Goette’s five-four finishes earned her

need of a perfectly prepped sand track that is. You couldn’t ask for a better temperature for a day of riding and the sun was shining, leaving nothing for us to do but get to some good racing! There was a lot of great racing in the Mini classes. Mini 65 was really good with a lot of riders moving around the top six all moto. Blake Hansen got out front early in moto one leaving the real race behind. Brady Bill had his pink framed KTM moving forward after a bad start. Bill eventually climbed his way into the second and held it till the end of the moto. After running second in the early laps Taylor Brissette finished third. At the finish it was Hansen, Bill, Brissette, Kadin Ahrndt, Jack Lacount, and Michael Kerscher rounding out the top six. Moto two saw Hansen get out front early and check out as Bill was working his way towards the front early before a mishap left him finishing eleventh. This left the number two spot wide open and claiming it was Brissette after some hard work against Bryce Hansen (Blake’s brother). Bryce would recover from an eighth place first moto and claim third in moto two. The overall saw Jack Lacount keep it consistent with a 5-4 for third and Bryce Hansen’s 8-3 score move him to fourth overall. The first moto of 85Sr was all about Jake Vaness. After taking the lead from Blake Bocek in the second corner, Vaness proceeded to check out for the win. Bocek had second under control until lap two when Dennis Ponton moved up and held it till the end. Bocek finished third. Jordan Nielsen finished fourth ahead of Jacob Moreau. Moto two seemed like a replay of with Vaness checking out once again. Ponton held on to second and again Bocek

was third. Brandon Barlanent moved his Kawasaki into the fourth spot improving his tenth place finish in moto one. Anton Kerscher made his 5-5 scores work for fourth overall. Vaness took the overall adding to his 2-6 finishes in the 125Jr class. Open A had Dustin Pulley winning both motos on his YZ450F and Ryan Gilbert showing off his new 2011 KTM250, making it a good run for second overall. Brain Collins rounded out the top three. 250A was a bit more exciting. After winning the first moto over Pulley, Gilbert went down in moto two ruining and chance of a decent overall. Pulley managed another overall with a 3-1 scores. Dylan Ziolkowski stayed consistent with a 2-2 finishes, and Marshall Mass made his Kawasaki work for third overall. Another notable was Hunter Nystrom. This was his final race in the B class, and he went out in style by winning six of six motos in the 250B, Open B, and Sportsman B classes. weet 16 MX hosted a Indiana State Championship Series event on Sunday, August 22. Riders from across the state made the trip to battle for the title of State Champion! Sweet 16 was the second race in a three race series as the third round of the Series will be held at Hangtime MX Park. The sun came up early and stayed in sight all day, without a cloud to shield the riders from it's rays. The temperature was warm, but the competition was hot. Riders had thier game faces on, eager to get another series race under there belts. Quad A was the first moto to hit the track. They roared out of the gate racing to the first turn. Shane Bolen #269 took the holeshot and never looked back, leading every lap of the six lap moto. Austin Shrock had some bad luck on the first lap, and was in fifth place coming around to take the green flag. With the State Championship on the line Shrock dug deep and climbed up to second place before taking the checkered flag. When the gate dropped in the second moto Shrock grabbed the holeshot and led the race all the way to take the overall. Bolen climbed his way up to second in the moto. The next start unleashed the Schoolboy riders onto the track. Dakota Robins #593 came out with a stong lead and held onto it for all six laps. While Dakota led the pack, a battle raged behind him. Willie Patton was second, while Quinton Camp held third until coming out of the whoops and overshooting the high-bank corner, costing him two positions. Levi Johnson had been dogging Camp, and seized the opportunity to move up to third. Scotty Swinford was hot on the trail. Camp wasted no time getting back onto the

track and was quickly catching up to Swinford and Johnson. Camp rode hard and was able to over take Swinford on the white flag lap to make it back into fourth. When the gate dropped on the second moto Robins wasted no time getting an early lead, and held onto it the entire race. Behind Robins was Swinford holding down second.

Swinford held on for two laps before Patton made his move in the "six pack" and overtook him. Caden Roberts and Quinton Camp battled it out for the fourth. Roberts managed to hang onto the spot for three of the six laps before Camp overtook him. The Mini Quads hit the track with all of them determined to come out big. Blake

Sarver #17 grabbed the lead and never looked back, leading every lap to the finish in both motos for the wins. The overall battle for second raged between Kade Wagner and Jacob Clingaman. While Wagner took second in the first moto, Clingaman was determined to get that spot in moto two. Wagner and Clingaman were tire to tire nearly the entire race, but Clingaman was holding onto that runner-up spot when the checkered flag came out. This gave him the second overall as well. The Hard Luck Award for the weekend hands down goes to Brogan Guyer #24 in the Mini Quad class. Brogan raced Saturday night at Sweet 16 and had a run of bad luck. Guyer cased the finish line double, and flipped his quad end over end. As Brogan flipped over the front of his quad his tether cord became wrapped around the throttle, pinning it full on. Brogan walked away with one boot on and one off, as the quad had stolen his boot right off his foot. With three stitches by his eye he returned on Sunday, for the State Championship. In the true spirit of racing Brogan had a smile on his face and was ready to ride. But as luck would have it he tangled and flipped again on his first lap. Brogan decided to just spectate the second moto. According to Brogan the weekend wasn't a complete washout, after all chicks dig scars. Reads Racing tips thier hat to one tough little dude! One of the best battles of the day was in the Schoolboy 2 class. Out of the gate #24 Bo Cooper led the pack, followed by his brother #2 Trevor Cooper, and Levi Johnson. Back in fourth was Dakota Robins. By the second lap Robins had worked his way into second.

While Cooper and Robins were headed to the tarmac highbank corner, Robins pushed Cooper high in the turn. Robinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; front end washed out causing him to go down, leaving Cooper in the lead. Robins wasted no time closing the gap back up to take over the lead by lap four, and never looked back, leaving Bo Cooper in second. Jake Truax started in fifth, but managed to work his way up to third before the checkered flag fell. The battle waged for 4th and 5th between Cooper and Johnson who battled the remainder of the moto. order in the second moto, as Johnson finished fourth. Trevor Cooper wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to finish, and Robins secured another overall with his two moto wins. The 14/24 class was combined with the Schoolboy 2 class. While the Schoolboy 2 class had the 1st gate drop #90 Kyle Biggins in the 14-24 had worked his way through the entire Schoolboy pack into the spot behind Robins. Biggins flew around the track making it look easy! Race #11 was a combination of 85cc 911 and 12-15 riders. The 85 Seniors hit the track first, with the 9-11 riders taking off on the second gate drop. Out in front was Connar Troyer. By the third lap Troyer had a flat tire and lost the lead to Jake Rice. Connar stayed on the gas doing his best to control his motorcycle. By the time the checkered flag was out Troyer had fallen back to fourth place, although he had given 110% out on the track. After overtaking Troyer, Rice led the way to the finish line. Following Rice was William Crossley who worked his way through the pack. Following Crossley was Elijah Labordus, taking third. In the second moto Troyer came out with a good rear tire and took the lead. Rice stayed on his heels but was unable to make the pass, giving the second moto win to Troyer, with Rice coming in second and still walking away with the overall. In the 85 9-11 Jordan Parmley came out with the holeshot and led the pack both motos, taking home the overall win. Coming in second in the first moto was Braden Groves. In moto two Kraye Loft came back from an eighth place finish in the first moto to pull off a second place finish. The crowd loved the tight racing action from this awesome group of riders! Heckendorf gets one at Tigerton Tigerton, Wisconsin - August 29 By Pete Emme

he MotoZone at Tigerton had a great weekend full of motocross with practice scheduled on Saturday that ran for nearly six hours, pit bike racing on Saturday night, and a full set of Northern Cup Motocross action on Sunday. Added to that was great contingencies from Yamaha and Kawasaki as well as Fly Racing and AMSOil. Scott Biese and the Fantasy Moto crew had the track in great condition all weekend, and the weather was fantastic both days, it even reached 90 degrees on Sunday. 250B rider Justis Heckendorf finally got the big win at Tigerton. Heckendorf shot out of the gate ahead of the eager riders in the B division. Regular front runner Zack Masch was on the inside when he tucked his front wheel on the slick first corner dicing to Heckendorf (#616) dicing to the inside to catch Heckendorf. After Justis the inside in the Open B class start. Masch went down, it took him well over a lap to get his Yamaha started. only muster an eleventh place finish while Meanwhile, up front, Heckendorf had the Markee, Thomas, Sharkey and Ben Cropsey pack dialed in as he was pulling on the pack rounded out the top five. that included Marcus Markee, Nick Thomas The second moto had Heckendorf out and Kyle Sharkey. Heckendorf led all the front while Masch quickly moved into fourth way to collect the moto win. Masch could as they headed over the massive set of doubles. By the time they came around in the second lap, Masch was out front where he would stay to take the moto win. Heckendorf, with his consistent 1-2 finishes took the overall ahead of Markee who went 2-3 for second. Masch ended up in the fifth overall. In the Open B class, Heckendorf got into the lead with a nice jump on the field while Cody Ciszewski aboard his Kawasaki was a close second. Masch struggled in the first portion of the track but was soon in contention for the lead and had his Warren Industries Yamaha bearing down on the two stroke of Heckendorf. Soon after, Masch was around the leader and Stephen Propson won Quad A and never looked back. took his bike to the +30B class win as well.

Masch took the win with Heckendorf in second, Ciszewski third. Heckendorf, “I got a great jump again on the start, and I just went with it for the first lap. Ciszewski was after me and then Masch was right on me. His corner speed is so smooth, I just tried to match it after he got around me but I couldn’t do it.” “I got a pretty decent start,” said Masch. “I went around on the outside and got into the second spot and after the first lap I moved into the lead and ran my own race.” The second moto of Open B had Heckendorf out front with Masch in about the seventh spot, moving through the field quickly displacing Ryan Kasper and Matthew Tranetzke, then Cody Ciszewski. Masch was now on Heckendorf’s rear fender and then it was nothing but clear sailing for the 13 year old from Pewaukee as Masch got into the lead. There was some great racing action in the Open C class where fourteen entries were looking for the win. Jeffery Stewart and Tyler Stoll battled it out for the lead in the first moto with Stewart getting the upper hand on his Yamaha. These two kids were bar to bar through the first lap with Stoll getting the pass on Stewart after the first lap, then Stewart retaliated before the two doubles but couldn’t make his Yamaha stick in the right hand corner. Stewart tried again on the third lap and this time he made it into the lead. Stoll got some momentum back but Stewart took the first moto win. “I came out with the holeshot and then Tyler Stoll got past me after the finish line

area, he had a good line through there,” said Stewart. “I came back on the straightaway and got back into the lead.” “I got a good start in about third and then I passed Jeff (Stewart) for the lead and then we came together in the sweeper and he got around me again,” said Stoll. Stewart pulled another holeshot in the second moto with Stoll close behind and Tyler Klos third. Stoll flipped the switch and was soon into the lead, catching a surprised Stewart off guard. Stoll moved out to a comfortable lead while Stewart had to settle for second. Stoll got the overall via his 2-1 tallies. Tyler Klos took home a third overall with 3-4 finishes. In the +30B class David Selle didn’t get the best of starts and had to work his way into the lead in the first moto. The second moto had Stephen Propson aboard his Honda CRF250R in the lead for the overall with his 2-1 scores. Selle went 1-3, finishing right behind Jon Randolph in the second moto, good

enough for second overall ahead of Randolph’s 3-2 tallies. Propson who won the class, ran a four wheeler in Quad A, also taking the overall there with 2-1 scores. Props to Lomira native for riding two very different disciplines of motocross, and doing so well in both. Returning to the Badger State was Troy Lipka. Lipka finally got a chance to race Tigerton, and it was definitely a good decision as he routed the +25A and +30A divisions with a 1-1-1-1 tally for two first overalls. Lipka looked like a 20 year-old scrubbing the jumps aboard his Honda CRF450R. Another rider who completely destroyed his competition was Dustin Pulley. Pulley, who recently finished fourth at the Loretta Lynn National Motocross Championships in Tennessee, won every moto in the A classes. All in all, it was a very relaxing weekend of motocross at one of the finest facilities in Wisconsin. This track is fast, very wide, has great jumps and a thick and gritty sand base with great lines in the corners. I among the many that really look forward to events here.

ever Minnesota Mile AMA Grand National Championship dirt track race held at the palatial Canterbury Park located in Shakopee, Minnesota. “I’m out of the point’s race for the championship, so my goal was to come here and win,” Coolbeth said afterward. Three heats and one semi-final set the stage for the GNC main event starting grid.

Matt Weidman set fast qualifying time in practice and backed it up with victory in heat one. Coolbeth won the second heat. Jake Johnson topped heat three and Henry Wiles won the semi. Multi-time CNC champion Chris Carr edged Johnson at the wire to win the four lap dash for cash. After the first lap of the GNC main event Coolbeth was running in sixth place behind the race leader Johnson, Weidman, Defending champ Mees, Carr, and Joe Kopp. Coolbeth eventually found his way around them all by the halfway point of the 25 lap race. Coolbeth then went on to record his first CNC victory since July of 2009 where he won the main event at the infamous Indy Mile. “We needed this win, it feels good!” explained Coolbeth afterward. “I got a decent start, found my line and started picking away. I’m a lot better on the long runs that the short runs, so it worked out good.” Johnson held on to a solid second place finish aboard his Zanotti Racing sponsored Harley-Davidson. Rogers Lake Racing/ Blue Springs H-D backed Mees moved up to third by race end. Wiles came from seventh to finish fourth aboard the Harley-Davidson. Wei-

dman finished fifth. Previous Springfield Mile GNC event winner Bryan Smith finished in sixth ahead of Carr. Attrition played an important role for Kopp who came into the event with a ten point lead in the GNC championship. Kopp fell to second behind now point leader Johnson after coasting off the track on lap 19. “I broke my brake lever off on the fifth lap” explained Kopp afterward. “So I soldered on without brakes until my chain fell off. Snedeker Racing’s Rob Pearson was running near the front early in the race until his exhaust pipe broke. Pearson then wisely pulled off the track when his air filter fell off. The Pro Singles twelve lap main event fell to the Van’s Yamaha sponsored Jeff Carver Jr. from Alton Illinois. Carver led the race from start to finish with Mike Avila (CA.), Brad Baker (WA.), Chaz Springsteen (MI.) and Cory Crawford (NY.) rounding out the top five finishing positions. Pedrosa Wins Indy Moto GP Indianapolis, Indiana - August 29 By Kurt Bauer

his year’s Moto GP had two more Americans joining; Nicky Hayden with Ben Spies and Colin Edwards racing for Monster Yamaha Tech 3. Spies and Ducati’s Hayden put on a great show Saturday qualifying on the front row with Spies taking his first pole in Moto GP. Race day was a hot humid day, almost a repeat of the Indy 500 in May. The Moto 2 race had forty bikes qualify so something was bound to happen as they swept thru the first turn then eight bikes went down trying to get through turn two. The race had to be red flagged and the crashed bikes were allowed to make repairs. The bikes were fixed and a restart had Tony Elias taking the lead, then going on to win ahead of Julian Simon. Track temperatures were steadily rising as the Moto GP started in the late afternoon heat. Last year’s winner Jorge Lorenzo started between Spies and Hayden. Ben Spies made the Americans proud as he grabbed the early lead and held it until lap seven when Dani Pedrosa passed him on the front straight. Pe-

drosa pulled away for the win as Spies held off Lorenzo for second. Nicky Hayden fell back to sixth place as his knee pad got ripped off, slowing him on the left hand turns. Casey Stoner continued his dreadful weekend by crashing out on the eighth lap. Six time Moto GP world champion Valentino Rossi coming off an injury was able to finish fourth behind his Yamaha teammate Lorenzo. Next year will

A day for the “Old” Racers Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 11 By Dave Hollub

s the host for the area’s longest running senior event, the Mike Gaborsky’s Dirty Old Blasters Vet Race and part of the Racer-X Senior Series, Aztalan takes its series leg very seriously, and that was evident all weekend. All week leading up to the Friday practice a steady stream of trucks hauled in sand and dirt for the track crew to mix in and make the track the best surface seen in a long time. On Friday morning the riders were treated to a perfect track and they came in droves to search out that one line that would gain them glory on Saturday. As the sun set Friday night everyone was tired but sporting broad grins. Then early Saturday morning those of us camping trackside were woken up by that dreaded sound of raindrops bouncing off our shelters. Luckily the main portion of the storm stayed away and after some early morning work the track was ready to race. When the first gate drop released the +45 Expert class Frank Weiss launched out and

grabbed the holeshot just ahead of Tom Dretzka as Lonny Brown moved into third. By the end of the first lap Roy Nafzger had Dan Haydin putting a wheel in on him in the corners. While defending his lines Nafzger was slowly reeling in Brown. On the last trip over the plateau Nafzger out jumped Brown and made his move into third place and then held on to the checkers. Dretzka edged Nafzger out for the moto two holeshot while Weiss was sitting back in seventh. Weiss was moving through the class and by the time he hit the plateau he was able to jump over Brown into third. Weiss began chasing Nafzger and by the time they came past the start on lap two there was less than a bike length between them. Dretzka bobbled in the West end and as Nafzger moved out front with Weiss and Dretzka chasing hard. Weiss tried every line he knew but Nafzger was able to hold him off until the final time into the Sand by the barn. Weiss went outside hard and powered into the lead. Weiss took the overall with a 1-1 day while Nafzger (3-2) was second and Dretzka (2-3) finished up the podium. Next up was the +60 class and when the gate dropped it was obvious none of these guys were letting their calendar ages slow down their riding as Tim Graves pulled the holeshot.

Graves led the entire moto but the rest of the guys were working hard to hold onto their positions. Bob Lewis was running second with Jerry Bumgardner breathing down his neck and Mark Thompson eyeing them both up from close behind. On lap four Charles Koch started picking off racers and by the time he hit the plateau he was defending second place, barely ahead of Bumgardner and Lewis. Koch grabbed the moto two holeshot edging Graves out. On lap two in the sand on the west end Graves made the move into the lead, and despite Koch’s efforts, held on to the finish. Anthony Bartemio took the outside line to steal the holeshot away from Joe Day and then led the +45B/C class to the finish. Day had Richard Crouthers made a pass into second just before the scoring tower on lap one, but Day was determined to get the position back. By the time lap two was half over Day was again in second and Crouthers was being pushed by Robert Morin. Morin got by on lap three and then held his spot to the finish. Moto two saw Jason Dollas out front at the holeshot and he wouldn’t give up the lead all moto as he checked out on the rest of the field. Morin, running in second was able to get some breathing room on lap three, and Crouthers settled into third as well. Morin used his 3/2 motos to grab the overall with Bartemio (1/4) in second and Dollas (7/1) on the final podium step. Morin later said, “I am feeling great considering I have only raced two races this year, and didn’t race at all last year. I feel great and CYCLE USA, October 2010

if at 45 you can still be out here you are healthy enough and blessed enough, it is a good place to be. The track is a lot nicer now than it was this morning. It started out greasy, slippery, and rutty. This moto was great and it is just a great, great feeling. I do have to thank Scott Venning from Venning Motorsports, he helps me out a lot with motor work.” Harold Gooch edged out Mike Zimmerman for the holeshot in moto one of the +55 class, but couldn’t hold him away from the lead very long. Zimmerman was first over the plateau with Gooch and Allen Brhely right behind. Brhely was in a hurry and by the time lap one ended he was out front. While Brhely cruised out front a running battle developed between Zimmerman and Gooch until finally on lap three Zimmerman took over second place for the rest of the moto. Zimmerman grabbed the moto two holeshot with Brhely to his left and Jerry Bumgardner to his right. This moto Zimmerman stayed out front to the finish despite a lap three challenge from Gooch who had moved up through the pack. The overall went to 2-1 finisher Zimmerman while Brhely turned his 1-3 into a second and Gooch (3-2) finished third. Zimmerman, “The day was awesome, it was a great day. down here, he’s a Millville guy, and I had a great race with him. Al Brhely, we had a heck of a time the three of us, just some good tight racing, a lot of fun. I haven’t been able to ride a lot this year but to come out to the Senior National and race with these guys is what it is all about. I have to give the Aztalan crew, especially all the waterers and track prep guys, they did an awesome job. They kept the track rideable especially with all that rain we had. It was just a fun day and anyone not here; well they just missed a great day.” Newcomer to the +50 class, Tom Dretzka made an immediate statement as he took a huge holeshot in moto one and stayed well

out front the entire moto. Lonny Brown stayed in front of Tim Boblin who was getting pushed by Randy Baumann. On the final lap Baumann made a charge on Boblin and was able to make the move into third just before the finish. Brown was fastest into the holeshot in moto two. By midway through lap two Dretzka was out front to stay. Boblin again had third place but this time Richard Crouthers was right on him and by the beginning of lap three had slipped past along with Baumann. Dretzka took the overall while Brown (2-2) was second and Baumann (3-4) took home the third place trophy.

Dretzka later told me, “The day went good, I got some good starts and the track turned out awesome. It looked a little scary this morning but it was probably one of the better days of riding. I have to thank Port Washington Yamaha, Sportland 2, No Fear, HJC Helmets, and my family out here.” One of the most fun classes to watch is the Dual Shock class, and every year the Wooly Mammoth Hunters bring out the old iron of their long past (but for today regained) youth. Honda mounted Brian Martens grabbed the first holeshot but Gary Behrens jumped into the lead soon after hitting the track. While Behrens built up a comfortable lead on the pack Martens was pushed from Jim Leach. Dan Glowacki was again racing the old Husqvarna that Mike Gaborsky had raced here years ago, holding onto fourth place. In moto two it looked like a repeat as Martens again led the pack around the holeshot, then giving up his lead to the hard running Behrens. This time in a move that probably has Gaborsky smiling from above, Glowacki powered the old Husky into second just ahead of

It was kind of nice to get out there and run with a bunch of people having fun.” All those 125s were screaming (some were gasping as well under weights and throttle demands they were not accustomed to) but regardless of where they finished, everyone was smiling and swearing ‘next year I’ll be back and better prepared’. If you have a 125 for sale, a whole new market may have opened up. As always the Mike Gaborsky Senior event brings out some of the best people in the sport, ready to have fun and enjoy a couple days in the dirt. It sure seemed that everyone left feeling pretty darn good about their day, and are already making plans to return in September of 2011 for next year’s event. Sullivan on fire at Freeman HS Freeman, Indiana - August 22 By David Dunnuck

he Hoosier Trail Riders are truly blessed with access to the Guthrie property near Freeman, Indiana. The property has an abundance of grass track, tight single track and transitions in and out of small, but steep ravines. The Freeman race has become an annual District 15 venue, and a main stop on the Southern Indiana Series. Nate Hughes was riding like he was on a mission, the mission: Win! Hughes led every lap of the Peewee Mix race holding off a hard charging Colton Beavers and Louden Feltner. The Peewee Injector class had an intense race between Lance Maschino and Reed Day. Day followed Maschino through the checkpoint every lap, but was never quite able to close the gap. The Mini course follows a significant portion of the Big Bike track where the youth riders were provided with ‘hard’ and ‘easy’ options when approaching the deep ravine section. The back property grass track section was eliminated from the course. While Luke Chilman would be starting in the Super Mini

class, he had no intention of letting anyone catch him, including the second row 85cc riders. Unfortunately for Chilman, Austin Lee, Mike Witkowski and Keagen Lee all had their own plans. Quads heat up Motocity Staples, Minnesota - August 29 By Sally Anderson

ominic Bartell shot out of the start gates in the 90cc Production class to fight Caden Anderson for the holeshot. Anderson came out ahead only by inches and continued his lead with Bartell putting the pressure on. Bartell soon made his move on Anderson taking over the lead while Aaron Johnson was fighting his way back up to the top five after getting pushed off the track before the whoop section. Johnson steadily moved up to the third place, on Anderson’s bumper. They raced side-by-side multiple times, and neither were letting off the throttle as they went into a deep, rutted up corner neck and neck. Johnson’s quad hit a soft stop which threw him and his quad off the track, tumbling into the weeds. After a brief moment, Johnson got back onto the quad, but unfortunately recorded a DNF for the moto. Bartell and Anderson took first and second places respectively. Round two was just as exciting with Bartell, Anderson and Johnson all out to win. This moto also brought Beau Tibbetts up to the front of the pack. Johnson was able to get

out front and hold Tibbets and Anderson off, as Bartell had quad problems during the race. With the different placement of riders for both motos, it really opened up the over podium placements, and Tibbetts prevailed today as the podium winner. Mike Barnhart and Ryan Young battled in the Production 450A class. Barnhart was able to get out in front of Young off the gate, but Young kept the pressure on for the first lap and then made his move through a corner into the first place position. Once there, he held on to finish moto-one ahead of Barnhart. Moto two was led by Young who dominated this time, leaving Brad Hartigan and Barnhart to fight for second and third. Hartigan was able to prevail and pull off a second place finsih. Barnhart was able to clinch second overall (2-3) over Hartigan as he had a DNF in moto-one. The Quad Girls youth girls and the Women’s class were ran together. At times it was hard to determine who was in the lead in which class, but none-the-less exciting to watch. Remington Guthman was able to take the lead right from the start in the Girl’s class in both motos and then take the win. In Women, it was Allyson Westfield clinching moto-one and the eventual overall, while in moto-two Haylie Benson was able to prevail. Its great to see more young women joining this sport and riding hard.

A special thank you to the Kadlec’s for having a spectacular day of racing at their track. Despite the warm, windy weather, the track was maintained well and riders were able to stay cool with the breeze. ooking around the stands this evening there wasn’t a person without beads of sweat streaming from them. To have just over 280 entries, family, friends and workers arrive at Hawkeye Downs on a 90 degree plus day with 100% humidity showed the dedication everyone had to racing at this stadium track. This of course just set the stage for some great racing and the annual “Big Bike Buddy Race” at intermission. The so called “Buddies” signed in to compete in a race in which two riders team up and use one bike. One rider goes a lap and there is a switching station that proved to be pure mayhem along with providing some real humor. The second rider does one more lap for the checkers. The teams were from all classes. The team of McCabe/ McLaud flew with the greatest of ease over the finish line making it a close race with two bikes right behind them. The entertainment they provided took you away from thinking about how hot you really were. As the second round of motos got going, the gate dropped for the Quad 50s and the

thunder (ok, maybe not quite thunder) echoed off the stands as the quads were released. Jumping right into front of the pack was three Cobras. Leading was Tristan Liebe followed by Taron Liebe and Traxton Liebe. Watching the brothers on this track with the nine other young riders brought a smile to your face. The Liebe trio kept the first three places all the way to the end followed closely by Dylan Sereg and Gage Beebe. In the 50Sr class, the gate dropped for twelve mini riders and the battle began. The second moto proved to be productive for Ruger Brown as he kept up his first place position with Kaden Mohror letting him know of his presence. As Mohror took second, Tristan Bell, Jacob Dakovich and

Colby Roskop were in a battle for third. Bell pushed it to the finish line for third while Dakovich took fourth. What fun to watch close races with the youngsters as they catch the competitive fever. It was another successful evening of racing thanks to the staff and workers at Hawkeye Downs. Riders battle at Sugar Maple Hillpoint, Wisconsin - August 29 By Dave Hollub

fter a perfect day of practice on Saturday, riders stayed on to meet the challenge of Wisconsin’s newest motocross facility, Sugar Maple MX. Sunday morning was sunny and warm as practice started, and everyone saw the tremendous job Jason had done prepping the track overnight. Those that were at the first race last month were also surprised to see the many changes to the track layout, and the overall feeling seemed to be positive. The 125Jr class was first out of the gate and it looked like Kyran Horkan was going to grab the holeshot but Keegan Cummins powered past to steal it away. Cummins led but Dustin Sikorski was charging hard. Sikorski caught Cummins just before the whoops section and took over the lead. Cummins chased him the entire moto but couldn’t retake the lead before the checkers flew. In moto two Sikorski jumped out front from the gate drop with Horkan second. This time it was Cummins using the whoops to move up a position as he passed Horkan. Cummins started chasing Sikorski but on lap four he went down in the rollers and his day was over. Sikorski grabbed the moto win as well as the overall with Horkan finishing second and Dustin Smithey third. Later Sikorski talked a bit about the track, “It’s been a good day. I did pretty good out there; the track is really nice and developing some nice ruts. I wish there were more

riders to rut it up some more, and make it a little rougher. The whoops are tough. I want to thank Motosports.com, DeCal Works, Redline Cycles, Scott Goggles, and my mom and dad are number one.” Next up was the 250B class and Yamaha mounted Cody Fredrick powered around the holeshot out front. As the leaders hit the triple Brandon Clifford was able to out jump Fredrick and move into the lead. Steven Ceithamer moved into second with brothers Myles Marshall and Brennen Marshall close behind. The first time everyone jumped out of Hollub’s Hollow Clifford was out front with Ceithamer less than a bike length back followed closely by the Marshalls and a hard charging Fredrick in fifth. into second. Cesco Lama had moved up from a bad start and was now in position to start challenging the front runners. On lap three Clifford had both Brennen Marshall and Ceithamer right on his rear wheel pushing him hard. Lama was closing in on Myles Marshall and on lap four Lama went tight inside on the Daytona corner to edge past for fourth place. Clifford took the checkers with Brennen Marshall second and Ceithamer third. The moto two holeshot went to Brennen Marshall followed close by Ceithamer and Clifford. Clifford passed Ceithamer over the first tunnel jump on lap one and began chasing MarCYCLE USA, October 2010

third at the checkers. Robert Vitullo blasted his Vetesnik Kawasaki to a big holeshot in front of the 250C class in moto one. Dylan Denruiter fought his way through the pack, and by lap two was in second close. Ian Malinowski was in third but had constant pressure from both Bobby Zielinski and Jacob Statz. On lap three Vitullo couldn’t jump the step-up out of the second valley because of a lapper and Denruiter dove inside to steal the lead. Denruiter and was able to retake the lead on the next lap and held on to the finish. Zielinski slipped past Malinowski on lap

After a great day I talked to Vitullo and he told me, “today was my first time I won an overall. I’ve won single motos but not an overall until today. I went 1-1 in 250C and 12 in Open C and I feel really good right now. I think I got the track pretty dialed in yesterday in practice, maybe not the whoops so much, that is where the guy in second kept catching me. I’m itching to move up to B now, possibly in October. I got all four holeshots today. I was really motivated and I also just got a new 2011 KX250F this weekend and that really helped me out. I’d like to thank SF Performance, EVS, No Fear, Vetesnik Racing, and my Dad, my Mom, and my siblings.” It looked like Amanda Nadboralski was going to grab a big holeshot in Women’s until she overshot the corner leaving it open for Brittany Lemke to edge out Tammy Flemming. Lemke was able to pull out a lead as Nadboralski got by Flemming in the stadium section and Sierra Dortch closed on Flemming. At the bottom of the downhill Dortch was going for the pass but braked a bit to aggressively and went down hard. Flemming immediately stopped to assist her and gave up

shall. William Menzel was in fourth with Lama challenging him in every corner. Ceithamer got by Clifford in the second valley and then on the next lap caught and passed Marshall in the stadium section. It looked like Marshall was in position to retake the lead until he went down hard over the back triple putting him out of the race. Ceithamer held on for the moto win and grabbed the overall with Clifford second and Lama third. Ted Coplien grabbed the +30B/C moto one holeshot and quickly distanced himself from the rest of the class. This left Brandon Yanke in second with Troy Fisher and Thomas Conroy in close tow behind him. Fisher made his move as he out jumped Yanke coming out of Hollub’s Hollow and then carried his momentum through the off camber corner at the top to take over second. Yanke defended his lines to the finish and edged out Conroy for third. Coplien again was first to the back triple and this time the front four were all airborne together in a tight pack to start moto two. As in moto one Coplien distanced himself from the class. This moto it was Yanke in second with Conroy third and Fisher fourth. By the midpoint of lap one Fisher had passed Conroy, then used the second time through the whoops to pass Yanke and then defended his position to the checkers. her running position to Chelsey Bill who was running close behind. Eventually Flemming finished the moto but Dortch was out for the morning. In moto two Brittany Lemke ripped off the holeshot and held the lead to the finish. Nadboralski settled into second and Dortch was running third. Chelsey Bill looked like she was going to be moving up until she went down in the whoops. Lemke won the overall with a 11 while Nadboralski (2-2) was second. The weekend turned out great. Overall the track is receiving rave reviews from everyone that came out to give it a try and Jason Erdmann promises to keep making changes. change of pace came for Megacross enthusiasts as Friday night racing kicked off the 3rd annual Tri-County Fair in Mendota, Illinois. The event started one hour later than usual due to the Friday night change, allowing families to still make practice after work or school obligations. However, the change in days did nothing to hurt rider turnout as around 300 entries came to enjoy the action, and maybe grab a funnel cake and lemon shake-up at the fair. The 125cc class kicked off the night’s main events with ten riders lining the gate. The season long battle between Yamaha riders Robbie Hyson and Matt Mellott continued in the main event after Mellott suffered some bad luck in the heat race finishing with a third place behind Paul Gerke. Gerke gave Mellott a run for his money in the main as well, running second for the first half of the moto until Mellott made his move. Hyson shot out to grab the holeshot using his weight advantage over the others and carried the momentum to win the main. Mellott stuck close behind

Hyson, leaving no room for error as Gerke kept the pressure on in third. Troy Quest grabbed the holeshot in the +30B main followed by Doug Harms on his 250 2-Stroke and the Honda of Kevin Quest. Kevin Quest almost stalled it coming into the corner, causing him to lose positions to Brian Carey and Pete Witkowski. Brett Wilkinson and Greg Pollak had a battle going as they moved up into the fourth and fifth spots. Then Kevin Quest made a comeback, blitzing past Witkowski and Carey to reclaim the third spot once again. Troy Quest checked out on the pack to take the win followed by Harms in second, Kevin Quest and Pollak. Megacross photographer Brett Wilkinson rounded out the top five with a great ride. Mendota’s hometown hero Chase Sexton had another stellar night aboard his Cobra 65 going 1-1 in both the heat race and the main event. Coming off a podium finish at Loretta’s, Sexton is proving that he is deservedly one of the fastest mini riders in the country. Finishing behind Sexton in the main was the Kawasaki of Cody Barnes, followed by Dylan Hummel, Taiga Judd and Mike Carter to round out the top five. The Super Mini class was packed with the normal heavy hitters such as Hyson, Mackiewicz and Skaggs, as well as some class newbies like Nick Wallace. Veteran Robbie Hyson shot off the gate to capture the holeshot with Joey Fortune, Mackiewicz and Wallace close behind. Fortune got a little off balance coming off the table, allowing Mackiewicz to gain time on him. Meanwhile, Wallace sat back waiting for the two ahead of him to make a mistake. Fortune finally broke as he slid out in the slick corner, moving Mackiewicz to second and Wallace to third. Hyson checked out on the rest of the pack, with Mackiewicz coming in second. Wallace finished an impressive third place as he just made the move to 85Sr and Super Mini upon his return from Lorretta’s this year. The Open A class brought

Once again, Ross Martin grabbed the holeshot aboard his Venning Motorsports Honda, followed by Maxx Malatia and Justin Kelly. Two of the usual front runners, Kevin Markwardt and Scott Zont got off to a bad start and both worked their way through the pack. Malatia latched on to Martin and never let up, keeping the pressure on Martin the entire moto, something that doesn’t usually happen. Kelly gave them a good run at the beginning of the moto, but eventually made a comfortable spot in third. Jared Schudel held his position in fourth with Kyle White close behind. Zont and Junior Jackson went back and forth until Jackson brake checked Zont in the corner, allowing Markwardt to scoot on by and immediately pass White for fifth. Jackson fell back a few places after Zont moved past. Martin took the victory with a hard fought second going to Malatia.

fun day of riding. Conditions were made difficult for riders as a steady rain began to fall shortly before the trials was set to begin. The rain continued on and off for most of the day. In the days leading up to the event, rain had muddied the loop and most of the sections. Several sections ran though a creek bed and the rain caused puddles to fill quickly along this stretch of the loop. It didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long before tires were quickly matted with mud causing many riders to need to clear their tires between sections. There were eleven sections laid out in a compact loop that took riders through woods, a creek, and up and down rolling hills. Some of the more experienced riders were challenged with steep hills, large rocks, and small waterfalls. This was Nitroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

first trials at Apple River Canyon. The consensus amongst the riders was that it was one of the best riding venues that they have ridden this season. Veteran rider Tito Nappi felt the loop was well laid out and, while being tough, was a great challenge for all riders. Another rider, Kent Franklin, agreed that the loop was laid out well and all sections were able to be ridden by all riders. Despite the cool, rainy conditions, Apple River Canyon proved to be an awesome place to ride. he Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club held its last weekend doubleheader hill climb of 2010 at their club grounds near Cayuga, Indiana, and Matt Peters was the only double class winner on Saturday night. Peters first win came in the 250cc where he came from behind to overtake Joe McGurer, who had posted a good 4.035 second time on his first ride. Danny Schumann was also fast with a 4.106 second time, with Peters in third place at intermission. In the second round Peters twisted his throttle a little more on his CR250 and flew over the top of the 155 foot, three stage hill in 3.990 seconds to take the class win, with McGurer and Schumann taking second and third. Peters needed only one ride for the 450cc class win, sailing his KTM380 over in 3.993 seconds on his first ride. Young Dylan Brady was his closest competitor on his KTM with a 4.079 second time, with Bobby Senn claiming third on his YZF450 Yamaha. Danny Schumann was the fastest rider of the night, flying his KX500 high over the hill in a blistering 3.925 seconds on his first ride in the 600cc class. No one could match that time in any class for the rest of the night.

Lakota Ashworth and Blair Lawson each took two wins over the weekend.

Kyle Galloway was second in the class at 4.054 seconds while Dylan Brady claimed third. In youth class action, Levi Peters was the 50cc winner with Cline Garriott second. Reece Hutton took the 65cc class win with Clint Garriott second. Cole Garriott was the 85Jr winner with Jarred Brown second, and Matt Gocken won the 85Sr class. Cole Garriott’s 4.852 second winning ride in the Junior class was also good for the Youth Fast Time trophy. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner once again lived up to his nickname on Sunday, winning two classes and taking the overall Fast Time award. Fortner took only one ride in the 600cc class on his CR500, as his outstanding 3.906 second time on his run went unmatched the rest of the day. ‘Dangerous’ Dylan Brady was his closest challenger in the class with a second round 3.951 second effort on his Honda, with Danny Schumann close behind him with a 3.962 second run on his Kawasaki. Fortner was in fact, his own nearest challenger for the Fast Time, as he brought his Honda back in the Senior (+40) class and delivered a 3.915 second run to win that class. He did have to work for the win, however, as he came from behind after taking the first round lead with a 4.045 second ride. Jon Creek slipped under that time on his second ride, posting a 3.953 second time to take over the class lead, but slipped back to second after Andy blitzed the hill again. Mark Kirking was third with a good 4.091 second time. Lady riders Blair Lawson and Lakota ‘Shay’ Ashworth completed weekend sweeps of their classes, as Lawson took the 125cc class win away from the guys both days, and Ashworth took the Women’s class wins. Lawson was also second behind Ashworth both days in the Women’s class. In youth class action, ‘Lightning Levi’ Peters was a double class winner, his first coming in the 50cc class on his KTM in 5.314 seconds. behind in the 65cc class, as his slightly out of control first round ride had him in fifth place at intermission. Charles Helfrich was in the lead with a 5.283 second time on his first ride. Peters kept his KX65 straight on his second ride and topped out in 5.256 seconds to claim the win, with Helfrich moving to second place. Jarred Brown’s fine 4.745 second first round ride in the 85Jr class held up for that win, as well as the Youth Fast Time. Reece Hutton claimed second. Matt Gocken was the 85Sr Mini class winner. The club ran its annual King of the Hill class at the end of the regular event. This is a one run, winner take all class for the ten fastest riders of the day, sponsored by Kaleb Northrup’s Kingofthehill.org website. This particular event held more interest as the class contained a Quad ridden by Ryan Garriott who had posted the sixth fastest time of day to win the 2 stroke Quad class. Ryan actually came close to winning the shootout with a very good 4.083 second time, holding down the lead for quite a while. Then ‘Jammin Joe’ McGurer took the class lead on his 250cc Kawasaki - the smallest bike in the runoff, with a 4.052 second time. Matt Peters had broken his normal 600cc class bike the night before, but had bought a new ride, a classy CR500, from John Colbert that same night. He rode this bike for the first time Sunday, and was just getting the ‘feel of

it’. His 3.973 second time in that class was fast, but only good enough for fourth place, and entry into the King of the Hill class. The hill had ‘slowed down’ due to drying, so the three second rides weren’t coming in the run off, but Peters flew over the top in 4.041 seconds to take the ‘King’ award, his second such of the year. peedway riders from Canada, New York, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana converged on the Indianapolis Marion County Fairgrounds for the third time in three years after the first two were rained out. This one finally went off under sunny skies and hot temperatures. Mid America 2009 Champion BJ Fesselmeyer riding for Bloomington Harley Davidson won all four of his heat races. New York rider Mike Buman rode impressively, winning three out of his four heat races, losing only to Fesselymeyer. The top eight riders qualified for two semis with the top two from each going to the A main. Joining Buman and Fesselymeyer in the A main was another New York rider Dave Clark, and 2008 Champion Wesley Oskiewicz, who use to race in Poland.

Fesselmeyer had been getting great starts all night long; but in the Main event it was Buman and Clark out of the gates first with Oskiewicz close behind. Clark held off Buman for the win and Oskiewicz crashed on the final lap in turn four enabling Fesselmeyer to finish in third. Buman took home the $1000 paycheck for the win. Koch, Pearson top Norseman TT Cambridge, Minnesota - September 12 By Tim McBride

he Norseman Motorcycle Club played host to the final AMA D-23 Tourist Trophy dirt track race of the season at their club grounds in Cambridge, MN. The two pro classes (450 and Open) saw a pair of current national numbers from different parts of the country at the top of the podium in the form of Cedar, Minnesota’s Josh Koch and Morton, Illinois’ Robert Pearson. Scott Baker from Eatonville, WA and Pearson, both of whom were in town for the Grand National held at Canterbury Park in Shakopee held the previous evening, won both of the heat races that determined the starting grid for the 450 Semi Pro main event. However, the home town contingent of Koch obviously had the settings on his Jeff’s SOS/ Anderson Plumbing Honda dialed in as he slid by early Pearson and held on to a narrow victory. Baker finished third, slightly distanced by the two front runners. Brothers Kevin and Conner Anderson rounded out the top five positions respectively. The two previous Open Semi-Pro heat races were won by Pearson and the Go-Moto entry of Nick Mataya. With this, they enjoyed selecting the first two starting positions for twenty lap main event. Kevin Anderson, aboard his Diesel MN/ EME Inc/ Larson’s Cycle Honda was sporting the quickest reactions however, and nailed the

holeshot and led Pearson and the rest of the pack during the early stages. Meanwhile, Koch had his work cut out for him as he started on the third row due to crash in his heat race involving Wisconsin’s Brock Schwarzenbacher who was forced to retire due to injury. Kevin Anderson, Pearson and South Dakota’s Chad Kenyon quickly set a pace that was matched by few, but there would soon be several developments that would determine the outcome. At the halfway point, Kevin Anderson’s Honda got stuck in third gear and he ended up crashing in turn four relinquishing the lead and the eventual win to Pearson. Baker crashed out of contention unhurt while running in fourth. Kenyon fell in the sharp right infield hairpin, got up quickly, but not fast enough to stay ahead of Koch who at the time seemed to be passing everybody. After the dust settled the top five finishing order read Pearson, Koch, Kenyon, Mataya and Conner Anderson. “Kevin (Anderson) was going fast,” explained the Stratton/ Snedeker Racing sponsored race winner Pearson afterward. “I’m used to running twenty-five lap main events so I settled in. I just caught up to him and was going to make it a race then I heard him clutch it coming out of the corners and I was wondering why, then he crashed and fortunately I just missed his bike.” Koch had a simple explanation for his charge into second place by race’s end. “As soon as I’d get close to someone they would

make a mistake and I’d zip by. The next thing I knew I saw Kevin lying on the ground.” In other racing action long time dirt track racer Tom Ladwig scored his first win of the season in the Open B main event. The father-son duo of Verdeen and Cale Langland notched a pair of victories in the +30 and 450A classes. Richard Waschek scored the upset in the ever popular Maddog class. s entertaining as ever.... the racing was hot at the Beaver Cycle Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Atwater short track. Starting out the Open Amateur division was David Schultz, of Beaver Dam. Approaching close behind was Ian Steen, and Quinn and Morgen Mischler (very aggressive brothers), going three wide into some of the corners. Morgen pulled away and having to face up to his big brother Quinn for

third place. Steen was charging hard in second challenging Schultz for the lead at every opportunity. Schultz held on though, and earned the victory followed by Steen, Quinn, and Morgen Mischler. The 250cc class riders are all so close in talent and with their smart riding, also put on a great show. With the holeshot was Zach Ryan, but finding the lead soon after was Morgen Mischler. Alexia Hoffmann pressured Ryan for the second place mark. Battling back and forth for most of the race, Ryan managed

to come out ahead of Hoffmann. Mischler came away with the win followed by Ryan, Alexia Hoffmann, Patrick Tratar, Andrew Schleicher, and Charlotte Kainz rounded out the top six. Andy Zipperer of Horicon pulled the holeshot in the Senior class. Pushing for the lead was Brendan Grasser in second. Clashing side by side for the third place spot was Robert Hartgerink and Mike Yogerst. Mid race Zipperer was going a little high which resulted him to drop back to third place. Awarded with the win was Grasser followed by Yogerst, Zipperer, and Hartgerink. The Open Quad A class was an attention grabber. Timing the start perfectly was Cory Mahlum. Close to his rear wheel and looking for the lead was Wayne Richter. Running comfortably in third was Chuck Calvert. As the white flag was thrown, determination for the first place finish really developed between Mahlum and Richter. Side by side, back and forth down the backstretch through turns three and four, and finally scoring the win was Mahlum followed by Richter and Calvert.
