✔MXA TEAM TESTED
MX-TECH MXT/SFF KAYABA PSF AIR FORK CONVERSION Motocross Action Magazine, “The creativity of MXTech’s MXT/SFF fork conversion, works great. We spent a couple days testing and racing with both the KX450F and CRF450 conversions, and the difference was night and day. The MX-Tech forks were plusher, didn’t spike at the end of the stroke and were ultimately more tunable. The MX-Tech MXT/SFF setup created the best Kayaba PSF forks we have ever tested, with the caveat that they aren’t actually Kayaba PSF forks after MX-Tech is done with them.” A copy of the full article is available on our web site at www.mx-tech.com. Friends catch up between motos at a New Hartford race this summer
The “MyPhoto” page, or better yet, group of pages is a great addition to Cycle USA. This is your opportunity to submit a cool photo, and have a good chance of it getting published. We’re thinking photos that capture a truely memorable moment... someone with their first trophy, or a group photo of you and your friends in the pits. A cool photo from a mud race you just happened to get. Maybe there’s a track worker deserves to be recognized, and you get a photo of them flagging or whatever. An adventure ride with a couple friends out west in the mountains, and you get a cool shot in some
scenic setting. Action not required. They don’t have to be on the track photos... people having a good time together at the events is great. Nothing obscene, but fun is perfect. Clear, close, good photos work. Send your “high-resolution” photo to chuck@cycleusa.com. Original, un-toned, uncropped images. Images over 10 megabytes, e-mail us for special instructions. Close, clear, and not “reduced” for web posting. Include a note describing the image; the who, where and when along with your name. We’ll include everything possible. Check out the first pages in this issue on pages 28 & 29.

His landing was so hard over the top he knocked one of the pipes off the machine. Six more riders tried but failed to match that time. Levi Peters had an outstanding weekend, taking six class wins and both Youth Fast Time awards. Levi’s wins came in 85Sr, 125cc and 200cc classes, winning all three both days. Morgan Wheelwright was second in both the 125cc and 200cc classes both day. Levi also took second place in the 250cc class with a 4.032 second time, which actually got him into the King of the Hill class runoff, finishing eighth. In other Youth action, Kane Brown was the 50cc class winner both days with Cale Garriott second. Brodie Bennet won the 65cc class Saturday with Cline Garriott taking the win Sunday. Eric Wheelwright was a double class winner both days, taking the 250cc and Senior (+40) class Saturday and the 250cc and

he Pleasure Riders M/C held another hillclimb doubleheader with Jared McKay and Wade Schultz emerging as the fastest time winners. Schultz was a double class winner Saturday, taking the 600cc and Open class victories. He set the first round fast time in the 600cc class on his CR500, only to see Matt Peters slip under that on his KTM450, winning the 600cc 4-Stroke class. Wade took the challenge in his strong throttle hand and sailed his Honda over the top of the 155 foot hill in 3.781 seconds to take that class win, and set the time which would hold up for Fast Time of the Day. Andy Fortner was second with a 3.874 second run followed by Jared McKay. Schultz took his second win in the Open class with a 3.978 second run on his big bore Suzuki with Harley riders Steve Shafer second and Kirk Gorsuch third. Jared McKay was a double class winner Sunday, winning the 600cc 4-Stroke and 600cc classes. Schultz again set the first round fast time with 3.778 second run on his Suzuki, which held up to win that class. But it was McKay this day who blasted over the hill in 3.687 seconds on his second ride in the 600cc class to claim that win, and set a new fast time which would hold up the rest of the day, the fastest time of the entire weekend. Schultz finished second behind McKay in the 600cc class with a 3.781 second time with Matt Peters third. McKay and Schultz matched up one more time in the King Of The Hill class. Schultz was the first to the line, riding his Suzuki. He roared over the top in a very good 3.847 seconds to set the time to beat. McKay topped out in 3.972 seconds, and Eric Wheelwright posted a good 3.917 seconds, and then it was Jason Northrup’s turn. Jason got into the King class based on his

Hot Day - Hot Racing at Sunset Walnut, Illinois - August 25th By Josh Rud, more photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com
A
ugust 25th kicked off another great race out at Sunset Ridge, with temps hitting the highest marks of the summer - making it a day for lots of water, and some great racing. The new track layout has all been sorted out and was kept in perfect shape all day long. With so many stacked classes today everyone was out there battling for position as the season starts to wind down with only two races left this year. Spectators were treated to show all day. Coming out strong right away was the +30A class. In the first moto Greg Braet out of Milan, IL took the win followed by Burton Lavens and Zeno Molteni. As the day moved on, the sun bared down as the gate dropped on the second moto with Lavens getting out front at the holeshot. Braet and Molteni were in hot pursuit as they passed Lavens coming up the first hill. On the way back down Lavens got around Molteni to take over second and then he started hunting down Braet. With the laps coming to a close Lavens wasn’t able to reel him in, giving Braet the win and the overall for the day. Lavens took
second overall and Molteni rounded it out with third overall. Things were certainly interesting in 14-24 today with Andy Kost coming down to the track from Wisconsin, taking the win in the first moto followed by another Wisconsinite, Jamison Duclos. Chris Antolak was third in the stacked class. The second moto dropped with Antolak getting out front for an early lead with Duclos and Skylar Harkless right behind him. Moving up the hill Andy Kost was coming back from getting trapped in the first turn, and settled in behind Duclos to take over third. Crossing the finish line area Antolak pulled off, seemingly having bike issues, moving Duclos up into the lead. Kost was all over him in second and Mark Marincic on the Honda gained the third spot. After a hard fought couple laps Kost hit the inside of one of the multi-line corners Sunset Ridge is known for, taking over the lead. Kost went on for another win and the overall. Duclos held on to second with Marincic third in the moto and overall (4-3). 250C was up next with one of the bigger gates of the day, having twenty-seven riders line up for battle. In the first moto Ian Pistole took the win followed by
Vaughn Mays was in contention in the A classes, finishing second in both.
Phillip Stevens out of Missouri and Colten Burk. The gates dropped springing the second moto into action with a large pile-up right off the bat, tangling up several riders and leaving Pistole out for the rest of the race. Coming through the carnage Derek Brueggert got up front with Stevens and Brandon Larson rounding out the top three. Stevens quickly took over the lead with Larson trying to follow getting shut down, but holding on to third. Coming down the finish line rhythm section Burk was fighting his way back up front after getting slowed in the start. Burk got around Larson going to the inside of the hairpin and was charging hard for Brueggert. On the white flag lap he finally found his line moving up to second with Stevens was still up front riding smooth and keeping up the speed. Stevens took the win and the overall for

the day. Burk took second overall (3-2) and Brueggert third overall finishing a fourth and third. Supermini was a great race today with eighteen riders signing up for action. In the first moto Chase Sexton took the win followed by Dawson Ryker and Dylan Boyd. The gates dropped on the second moto with Jason Gepford getting out front for the holeshot with Sexton and Ryker right behind him. Around the second corner Sexton turned up the heat and shot out front with Gepford holding on strong in second. Putting the first lap in the books Sexton was starting to pull away as Zach Tatar moved in second with Gepford now in third. On the third lap Gepford went down momentarily giving up third to Boyd. Coming up to the checkered flag Sexton took the win and the overall for the day, with Tatar second overall

with a fourth and a second and Boyd third overall. In 250B things were going back and forth for another great race today. In the first moto Jamison Duclos took the win followed by Jacob Wever and Mark Marincic. The second moto took off with seventeen riders funneling into the first turn as Wever took off out front followed by Duclos and Nick Hancher. Down the hill into the first table Marincic ripped the inside to take over third as Wever was charging hard out front, protecting his lines as Duclos was looking for somewhere to get by. Coming out of the back section of the track, Hancher moved back into third as he and Marincic were going back and forth several times through-out the race. On the final lap Marincic got back into third and made it stick this time. The checkers came out with Wever taking the win and the overall with Duclos second overall and Marincic taking the third for the day. The day moved on flawlessly as Open A was out to test the limits of the track as always. In the first moto Greg Braet took the win with Ty Tyrrell and Vaughn Mays close behind. The second moto came to life with Mays ripping the holeshot and riding strong with Braet and Chris Antolak in third. The three battled it out up front for several laps as Tyrrell was all over Antolak looking for a way around. On the third lap Antolak backed off with more nagging bike issues, bumping Tyrrell up to second as the battle up front was going strong. Mays pulled out all the stops, riding clean and took the win but with the first place in the first moto Braet took first overall. Mays took second overall and Tyrrell third. Loberg and Kadlec fast at the Clash Millville, Minnesota – August 18 By Rolfe Otterness
J
ake Loberg and Gavin Kadlec were top dogs at the 2013 Viking Clash Pro-Am race at Spring Creek Park. Loberg had two strong rides for a 1-1 finish in the 250A class while Kadlec’s 1-2 finish secured him the big bucks in Open A. Loberg’s win was a good indication that he is well on his way back to form after sitting out a major part of the year after an injury during the supercross season. Kadlec is gaining form and speed as he shapes up to be a contender at the top level of District 23 motocross competition. Both riders had to deal with some strong competition from other challengers.

CYCLE USA, October 2013
This race was also a Spring Creek Super Series event, round 9, and there was a strong turnout of the regulars who were chasing points plus extra riders looking for some of those extra large trophies that the Viking Clash is known for. With about 650 entries, most classes had pretty full starting gates and tough competition. The weather was great with high 70’s for temps and blue skies all day long. The track was in excellent shape with just the right amount of ruts in the corners to make for multiple lines. Iowa’s Tanner Oetting jumped off the gate best to lead the 250A class through turn one and collect the holeshot money provided by the Mazeppa Area Jaycees. Loberg was on the gas hard and dropped Oetting back in short order as the pack hit the whoop section. Oetting held on to second for the first couple of laps with Ty Tyrrell and then Kadlec applying pressure. Kadlec finally pushed by after about a lap leaving Oetting and Tyrell in
a scrap over third. Californian Bryce Harkey was on the move though and shortly after halfway through the seven-lap race he had dispatched with Tyrell and Oetting to close on Kadlec. For the last two laps they had a good tussle but Kadlec remained in second behind Loberg’s solid win. Tyrell nailed down fourth over Matt Maier. Oetting grabbed the holeshot money again in the second moto but Loberg quickly established his presence at the front of the pack. Harkey had a better start this time and soon was occupying second place in the order with Josh Philbrick and Tyrell just ahead of Kadlec. Loberg was strong and slowly gapping Harkey, but Kadlec was charging and moved up to third over Philbrick with two laps to go. The order was pretty stable the last couple of laps and they crossed the line in order- Loberg, Harkey, Kadlec, Philbrick and Meier. Loberg was pleased with his performance as he took the podium after the race.
Tanner Schlegel, winner of the 50cc Oil Injected 4-8 class, in the podium spotlight.
The Open A class featured a nearly full gate for this cash-paying event, but Oetting definitely seemed to have an Alessi-like grasp of holeshot technique and he pulled another one when the big bikes tore off the line. Kadlec surged to the front on lap one while Oetting felt some challenges from Colton Karl and Tyrell. Kadlec looked solid while Tyrell picked up the pace and grabbed second where he resided for about the next four laps with Loberg closing in gradually. Loberg secured second with two laps left and managed to gap Tyrell by six or seven seconds but was himself that much in arrears of Kadlec when the checkered flag waved. Oetting was fourth with Harkey fifth and Joe Perron sixth after moving up. Second moto of Open A, another Oetting holeshot. Kadlec was close enough though that he pounced quickly and took the lead with Perron and Tyrell also getting by Oetting on lap one. Kadlec had a bit of a lead for the first two laps but then Perron put on a charge that he couldn’t withstand and for the rest of the moto Perron just left the rest behind. Kadlec held steady to go the distance in second place while Loberg passed Tyrell near the halfway point and maintained for third at the flag. Tyrell and Harkey rounded out the top five then. Checking out the action on the mini bike track, there was some good action in the 50cc Oil Injected 4-8 class. Tanner Schlegel put his KTM out front to win
both motos with some solid rides. Koby Turner and Wyatt McGrath diced it out a bit with Turner taking second both times out. Local boy Vincent Harens had a good day with 4-4 scores over Lydia Douglas’ 6-5 total. Jacqueline Riess and Shayanna Wilson charged out front in the Women’s class to dispute the lead. Wilson seemed to have a bit of an edge and slowly gapped Riess as the race proceeded. Trisha Hoover held third early on only to see Ann Rysavy motor by near the halfway point. On the last lap Kyra Boaz moved up to secure fourth with Falen Narel taking over fifth. Moto two saw a side-by-side charge through the first turn by Wilson and Riess who then charged down to the whoops where Wilson took the lead. Riess was pushing to keep pace but went down hard on lap one and was out of contention. Wilson went on to win with about a twenty second lead. Rysavy came across the line in second over Narel, Hoover and Abby Brummond. Perfect conditions for Crystal Falls
Open B off the line
Crystal Falls, Michigan - August 10 By Doug Forstner
C
rystal Falls MI was host to a District 16 AMA Motocross doubleheader for the August 10th and 11th weekend. Valley Raceway has been hosting MX events since the late 1990’s and when we arrived at the track the Valley Crew had it in prime condition for the weekend’s racing. Bench racing
Friday night around the campfire with good friends, I couldn’t help look up to the sky and see the millions of stars and smile knowing it was going to be a good weekend of racing with awesome weather. Lots of racing families were piling in and numbers were around the 230 mark for the weekend. Saturday morning Peewee Sr. was the first class out of the gate. Easton Block ripped the holeshot but he had to battle with Drake

Dionne to keep the lead. Dionne was hot on his heels and pushing Block to run a fast pace on the special Peewee only track. Block held the small gap over Dionne throughout the moto to take the win. In moto two, again Block grabbed the lead, this time with Aidan Colombo in second. The peewees actually start on the concrete start of the big track and transfer over to the downhill of the separate peewee track. Dionne made his way past Colombo to take over the second place spot on lap two and was trying to close the gap on Block. Payton Woollard and Mason Barilani were rounding out the top five. Woollard would fight hard with Colombo over third place the rest of the race, but Colombo was able to finish in third. Block took the overall ahead of Dionne and Colombo. 250A class was getting ready on the big track as the peewees were finishing up. It was Kyle Koosmann on his Yamaha getting a good start and taking charge of the class. Jacob Vaness put his Suzuki into the number two slot with a sweet battle developing behind him. James Marietta slid his Honda past Vaness to take over the runner-up spot, and Jason Kidd and Kyle Hameister were finding good lines, keeping themselves close to the top runners. The action was pretty intense all moto and at the checkers it was Koosmann first, Marietta, Vaness, Kidd and Hameister. In moto two, again Koosmann got out front.
This time David Watzka had a better start and was close. Vaness was charging with AJ Woller and Eric Palosaari right there. As Woller and Palosaari were trying to get Vaness, Hameister and Kidd were mixing it up as well. Koosmann took the overall going 1-1. Vaness’s consistent 3-3 was good for second overall beating out Watzka’s 8-2. Woller and Palosaari rounded out the top five. The racing was so good in 250A I decided to watch Open A as well. With thirteen riders on the gate I was trying to guess who would be the man to beat. As it turns out, Jake Zeugner from Vulcan MI was that man, going 1-1. Vaness had a pair of runner-up spots both motos earning him second overall again. In moto two, Vaness grabbed the holeshot but Zeugner got around him right away. Behind the leaders, Andy Zambon, Woller, Palosaari, Colton Karl, Hameister were all grinding out laps trying to hang with the leaders. On lap four, Woller was trying to get around Zambon for third and behind them I could have thrown a blanket over the rest of the top ten. On the last lap, Vaness was gained on Zeugner but came up two bike lengths short, Zambon held on to third over Woller and Hameister who rounded out the top five. Open B class also had a huge turnout and it was Blake Bocek from Crandon WI taking his Yamaha to 1-1 moto scores. Kyle Ahola and Austin Childers swapped motos with Ahola going 3-2, getting his Kawasaki into second overall ahead of Childers (2-3). In moto two, it was a freight train behind the leader. Brandon Barlament who was running third on lap two was just ahead of Tory Brady, Shane Scott, Childers, and Casey Millette. During the white flag lap, Childers got past Barlament for third behind Ahola and Bocek. The overall went to Bocek, Ahola 2nd, Childers 3rd. I love heading up north, for not only the great racing action, but it also feels like you are on vacation... breathing in the great north woods clean air. I also learned to pronounce the U.P. traditional food the pasty correctly and I
found out Jimmer was cool. The track held up great all weekend as the Valley crew put down tons of water to keep the soil mint. Labor Day Weekend at LTM
Jacob Selock went 1-1 in the Schoolboy class.
Casey, Illinois - August 31 By James Pinckard
I
n Illinois Labor Day Weekend always includes one thing, “CASEY” Lincoln Trail Motosports hosting a grand event. In 2013 it with a Grand Prix on Saturday, Motocross on the Classic Track on Sunday along with a Hare Scrambles. Monday was Motocross on the Bomber track for bikes and Classic track for quads. I was planning on going down covering the Classic track motocross and Hare Scrambles on Sunday and the Motocross events on Monday but during the event Sunday I got hurt and had to leave. All is well for me and a strange thing happened for this event. It rained on Saturday night! We have not had rain for some time but many people say it always will rain on Labor Day weekend and they may be right. With the rain it left the Classic track a little muddy but the LTM crew went to work and the track became great. There were many lines in every corner making for great racing. 65 Beginner is a great class. For the riders who get started that are too old for the 50 class, this is perfect. In the first moto it was Ashton Birmingham taking the moto win with Suzuki rider Chad Phelps second and Alexis Dunn third. In the second moto Phelps found his pace and took the moto and overall win. First moto winner Birmingham had another good ride taking second. Third this moto 14 CYCLE USA, October 2013
went to Brendon Burton with Dunn fourth. When the moto scores were posted Dunn with 3-4 moto scores took third overall over Burton. The 65Jr class is very competitive, and fast. KTM rider Brennan Wages attacked the track laying down unmatched lap times, taking the first moto win. Trevor Colip finished second with Caiden Gerling third. In the second moto things got shaken up. Well, all but one and that was Wages was again out front and took the moto win and overall. Lucus Grounds, after a seventh in the first moto was on the gas taking second for the moto and third overall. Third for the moto went to Gerling and that was good enough for second overall. There has been some buzz in the industry about the rebirth of the Two-Stroke. Many reasons have been given like the cost of the machines, the fact they are easy to work on and cost less to repair but most of all they are fun to ride. The 125cc class keeps growing and the racing is great. This day it was as easy as 1-2-3 to describe the class
with Jacob Selock taking both moto wins and the overall. Second both motos went to Halls Husky rider Paxton Kerber. Honda rider Chance Trigalet finished third. Many riders are breaking out the bikes and returning to the track after a time away! One such rider was Kawasaki rider Alex Wentzel in the 14-24 class. Alex was looking to have some fun and that he did, getting a great start in the first moto and riding well, he finished sixth for the day. At the front of the pack Kelby Simmons took both moto wins. Chance Trigalet finished second overall with Brock Aleshire third. The +25 class had some great racing but Honda rider Derek Leist, a longtime A rider who was back for the Classic track took both moto wins and the overall. Kawasaki rider Jake Lustig put in strong rides but finished second moto motos. Third overall went to Daniel Biba. +30A also had a rider who has not been on the bike for some time. MotoFab Suzuki rider Jacob Lustig, “I’ve been very busy with my work and have not been able to ride.” All I can say is its good for the other riders that he hasn’t been able to ride because he came out swinging. In the first moto Lustig took the win with Chris Snidle second and Mark Smith third. In the second moto Smith was on his new 2014 Yamaha, cranking and took the moto win and second overall. Third for the moto and overall went to Snidle. Lustig finished second for the moto and took the overall first race back. “That was fun, but I think I might be sore tomorrow.” Every racer has that one guy that they for some reason just can’t seem to beat often. One rider today that rose to the top was Super Mini rider Noah Watts. Watts is a super-fast
kid, but KTM rider Jason Gepford seems to have his number at times. In fact Gepford took both moto wins and the overall in the 85Sr class, but when the Super Mini class lined up Watts was focused and it showed as he took both moto wins and the overall. Gepford finished second with Riley Beck third.

Building bridges we need Rochester, Minnesota By Mike Quinn
I
n the world of off-road riding and racing we often feel we are misunderstood. Over the past few decades we have seen a multitude of riding areas closed to us. We have been fighting to save what little land is left. While we have certainly been on the short end of the stick, some of that is our own fault for not working with the right agencies and building the bridges we need to educate and introduce people to our sport. Here in D23 we are lucky to have Tom and Karen Umphress as our government relations officers. They work closely and continuously with many different DNR staff. Through the efforts of Karen and Tom we were able to put together an MSF Off-Road class for DNR officers and staff. I had the privilege of being one of the instructors for that class. It was a great experience to meet and be able to

introduce these people to our sport. A couple of them had ridden, some the others were totally new it. To say that they learned a lot and enjoyed the day would

be an understatement. They came away from the class with more than just an appreciation for riding. To a person they all really loved riding. They also came to appreciate just how physical the sport is. One of the participants, an avid runner commented on how sore his quads were at the end of the day. The others, although tired and sore were ready to ride again another day. The class was held at Spring Creek MX Park, and as an added bonus they got to watch Alex Martin practicing on the main track. Needless to say this was more than just an eye opener for them. I think we have even gained a few new MX fans. Alex
took time to meet with the group, answer questions and pose for a few pictures. He also agreed to work with the DNR on some educational promotions. What a bonus for all us riders. Thank you Alex for taking the time. Once we had completed all the exercises for the class including riding basics and some advanced techniques, like riding over obstacles, turning and traversing hills, the group took on the Micro track and did some laps to gain more riding experience and time in the saddle. The looks of satisfaction, smiles and pure enjoyment of the students at the end of the day made it all the more rewarding for Karen and I as instructors. More importantly we have introduced our sport to people that make decisions on where we can ride. They see that we are responsible and respectful of the terrain. They came away with a new understanding of what and who we are. This is a bridge that needed building and we need to continue to build them. I would be remiss if I did not thank the Golden Eagles Cycle Club of Rochester MN for supplying some motorcycles, and for paying the insurance cost of the class. This would not have been possible without their help. I know this was an educational experience for me as well as for our students. I just hope that we can continue this trend into the future spanning the gaps is always a positive thing.

Greg Moss Memorial Race in Byron Byron, Illinois - August 25 by Kylie Kelsall
O
n August 25th WFO hosted the seventh race of the season in Byron Illinois. This race was held in honor of Greg Moss, an amazing racer, father, and a friend to all. He was a founder of Kishwaukee Riders, a District Enduro director for seven years, and a Forest City Riders member since 1982. He started racing enduros in the early 70’s, right before Kishwaukee Riders was developed. Moss dabbled in most racing arts, not only did he ride enduros but also raced BMX with his son Ryan Moss in the 80’s, where he was close to the Illinois State Championship, but he decided mid season to race an enduro and blew out his knee which ended his BMX season. Also in the 80’s Greg and Ryan Moss started to participate in the Gussie Hare Scramble Series. By this time Greg was starting to ride a little less, but where he slowed in racing he exceeded in being a mechanic to all who needed him. He used his vast knowledge to help anyone who needed it. His son Ryan voiced, “He really began to become the Greg that most everyone knew”. Greg soon was the “go-to-guy” for help. Be it was help with a bike, a riding technique, cutting trails, or being just a friendly face, he was there. Greg truly

loved any and all racing. He loved to take his son Ryan to car races and road bike races as well. Ryan said, “He even tried to name me Sterling after the race car driver Sterling Moss. When mom shot that down he thought it was cool and got my initials R.P.M. So yea he loved motors, wheels, and racing!” To start off the morning the 50cc (4-6) riders Cole Morgan, Jhak Walker, and Darrin Herman dominated their competition. Elijah Berryman won the 7-8 age group yet again. Berryman has kept pretty consistent with his

Bowles started off in fourth, but by the fifth lap he held the first place position. 65cc (7-11) rider Tommy Fortune was the only rider in the 65cc class to complete the first lap in under twenty minutes. He was also the only rider to complete three laps. In the Supermini division Cody Barnes and Jacob McCarrens went head to head for the
win. It took until the third and final lap before Barnes pulled away from his competitor and finished in first with a final time of 46.48, McCarrens came in about two and a half minutes back. 85cc was next, and the top three finishers put on a good show for the spectators. Tanner Whipple and TJ Nees both had sixteen minute lap times the first lap of the race. By the second lap Colten Zuidema was right along side his competition. In the Women’s class, Autumn Frankiln took first over Katie Parker, Susan Creek and Amy Fischer. Open C held a lot of great riders on Sunday. Trey Waage and Cody Kent battled through the entire race. The first two laps the racers had matched times, but in the third lap Waage started to slowly pull away from the pack. By the forth lap Waage had a bigger lead on Kent. Colton Brough saw a gap between Waage and Kent and took advantage of it, pushing Kent out of the second place position. Kent finished in forth behind Jordan White who found his opening in the forth lap as well. Dalton Brough and Cody Barnes had a tight race in 250B. They held same lap times from the beginning until the fifth lap when Brough pushed ahead by about two minutes. In Open A Drake Lineback,
Joey Fortune and Andrew Remley took the top three positions. Lineback and Fortune were neck and neck until the last lap when Lineback pushed ahead to finish almost two minutes before him. Adam Bonneur was the only AA rider to complete seven laps. He finished first, JD Friebel finished second, and in third place was Steven Willis. Sunday was a great day for WFO and all of the riders who came to join them. WFO would like to thank Aaron and Tonya Vincer, owners of Byron Motorsports Park, Forest City Riders and Ryan Moss for laying out a great track, and the riders who came to join in on a great day. Another fine day at Crossroads Mason, Illinois - August 18 By James Pinckard
G
reat weather welcomed the riders to a full weekend at Crossroads MX. Saturday hosted a prepped track practice with a brand new section. Track manager, Drew Jackson, “we put in the new section and I think it’s going to work great. We aren’t done and are going to keep working on the track. We’re already working on the next new section.” The new section was fun and its good to see the work the crew is going through to keep improving the track, as well as providing more practice days. Motocross is often called a “family” sport. To some it means its family friendly, where you can bring your children and everyone can just have a great time as a family unit. To others it means that many riders have kids that also ride or even a spouse to share track time with. To the Clouser crew it means brothers racing together, three in fact. They travel and race with each other. Mairo, Dominic and Giancarlo Clouser can often be found on their KTMs doing battle with each other and the rest of the pack The first class the Clouser crew took on was the 14-24 class. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Clay Schreiner grabbed the holeshot and man was he on the gas. Schreiner rides the C class, but this day was laying down A class times, pulling hard with Honda rider Brock Aleshire in tow. The next spots were the Clouser riders. Mario got the best start and finished third with Giancarlo fourth and Dominic fifth. In the second moto Schreiner and Aleshire were again out with the Clouser crew in tow. Schreiner took the win and overall. Giancarlo Clouser put in a great ride, pushing his way to third and third overall. Mario finished fourth for the second moto. Dominic finished the moto in sixth, and fifth overall. The second class the Clouser crew ran in was 250B. I have to say this race had some of the best racing of the day for sure, but it was not without issue. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Brayden Copeland took the moto win with Yamaha rider Trevor Renko second and Kawasaki rider Travis Walker third. Giancarlo finished fourth with Mario fifth, Dominic sixth. The second moto is where things got crazy. On the line the card went up, then sideways and the gate dropped… wait some of the gate dropped so riders really seemed not to know what to do? Some went on but not fast then some came off the gate but slow looking for a flag or something then it was like all could see that the there was not going to be a restart so everyone just took off! The Clouser brothers all waited to see what was going on and it for sure put them behind.
The Clouser brothers prior to the 14-24 class start. Giancarlo, Dominic, and Mario.
When it was over Giancarlo wasn’t happy with the start but would finish fourth overall. In the front of the pack it was a straight up street fight! Copeland, Walker and Renko were all over each other! Coming to the flag it was Walker for the moto win with Copeland and Renko behind. With that finish the overall went to Copeland with Walker second. Motocross is a sport with a great history, with some riders that have riding for years, and others that are new to the sport and racing. This is a great thing, and very important for the growth of our sport. Two new riders racing today were Raven Jackson and Suzuki rider Kaleb Thompson. Both just started in motocross this year. Today Jackson finished fifteenth in the 250C class and third in the Open C. Thompson finished sixteenth in the

Vet Riders take over at Azzie Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 7 By Dave Hollub
E
very year in September Aztalan Cycle Club hosts the RacerX Senior Championship Series. The race is now known as the Mike Gaborsky Dirty Old Blasters race in honor of longtime racer and club member Mike Gaborsky. 2013 marks the 21st year at Aztalan, and although the name has changed through the years the event still draws a crowd of ‘seasoned’ riders. This year there were 280 entries to compete in sixteen classes spread out over nine age groups from 18 to 60 plus. Once a muddy practice (thanks to an overnight cloud burst) was concluded it was time for the riders meeting. As everyone gathered injured rider (last year’s event) Pete Degrand rode up to conduct the meeting. Degrand has been a longtime club member and served as MX referee many of those seasons so his return today brought smiles to those in attendance. Once the rules of the day were spelled out it was time to start racing. When +45B/C took their gate drop David Yurko nailed his first of two holeshots. Yurko ran out front all moto with very little challenge followed by Patrick Boyden who had settled into a solid second position. Randy Scott held onto third for the first couple of laps until the relentless pressure from John Cooke finally brought down his defenses. Cooke held third to the checkers while Michael Tilkian finished fourth. Yurko was out front again in moto two, being pushed by Tilkian. On their third trip over the plateau Tilkian jumped past to take the lead and stayed out front to the finish. Yurko settled into second with Cooke close behind. Yurko’s 1/2 day was good for the overall while Tilkian (4/1) was second, and Cooke (3/3) was third.
Pete Degrand returned to conduct the riders meeting.
David Yurko (#362) won the +45B/C class.

Roy Nafzger looked like he had third before both Mark Marescalco and Frank Weiss slipped by as lap three was going into the books. In moto two Himes got out front right away but had Behrens looking for a chance to move into the lead. Nafzger settled into third while Weiss was busy holding Marescalco back. Himes took the overall while Behrens (2/2) was second and Weiss (4/4) grabbed the final podium spot. With the exception of the +55 moto one holeshot Wayne Welzien owned the class today. Welzien worked his way around Todd White shortly after the start and led to the checkers. White held on in second while Steve Sorge and Gary Behrens battled it out for third. Sorge finally Gary Behrens won the Dual Shock got the edge and then overall on his 1981 Yamaha 490cc CYCLE USA, October 2013

Hoffman Hammers Hutchinson TT Hutchinson, MN - August 17 By Tim McBride
M
Quad Open; third place Taylor Peterson, winner Dustin Hoffman and second place Daryl Rath
ystik Lubricants/ MAXXIS/ Valley Sales of Hutchinson/ Hoosier Tires/ Rath Racing combined their efforts to offer a generous $3000 dollar purse when the North Central Dirt Track Association played host to the Hutchinson TT held at the McLeod County fairgrounds. Dustin Hoffman made the trek all the way from Wisconsin Rapids, WI. and took home the lions share of the purse. He won the feature twenty-five lap Open Pro Quad main event. Hoffman clawed his way to the front of twenty-one rider field and took over the lead from Daryl Rath as the race neared the half way point, and they began to encounter lapped traffic. Despite transmission problems, Hoffman maintained a comfortable lead over race favorite Rath the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Taylor Peterson finished a respectable third place finish. “I lost third gear so I had to clutch it a bit,” explained Hoffman while being interviewed, perched on top of the winner’s podium. “We’ll go home and replace the transmission before we go to New York for our last Pro National out there. I’d like to thank my brother, he comes to every race with me and does the wrenching, and everybody back home that supports me.” Rath did score wins in the Open A and the +30 classes tonight, and was gracious in finishing second to Hoffman. “We had a perfect night all the way up to that last Semi Pro Bike class, third place race,” explained event co- Open Wade Wessels, winner Josh Koch and sponsor, Rath. “I missed the second place Mac McGrew set up a little bit and he (Hoffman) hit it. Dustin was fast all night and he wasn’t going to give anything away. Either does Taylor (Peterson) standing up here in third. Taylor and I travel to all the Nationals together and he’s a good friend of mine. I’m pretty proud of everybody standing up here tonight, they all run Rath products and I’m proud of that.” The Open Semi Pro motorcycle main event turned out to be a crash fest for just about everybody except event winner and GNC National #68 Josh Koch who raced to the checkers virtually uncontested. Koch’s fiercest competitors were AMA Pro Singles competitors Mac McGrew and Cole Fealy. Unfor30

tunately, they tangled on the first lap leaving themselves out of contention. McGrew recovered to finish a distant second ahead of third place finisher Wade Wessels. Fealy however was forced to retire his Honda with a broken radiator. “I was just riding around,” smirked Koch afterwards. “They did all the work for me. Koch
topped the 450 Semi Pro main event as well. In other racing action, Daryl Rath’s son Tucker followed in his father’s footsteps by winning the Quad Production 90 class. Steve Drew won the +50 class. Joliet Mx Racing Under The Lights
Justin Friebele rode to a third in his 85cc class.

T
hings are moving right along at Joliet MX as the race season gets close to the end. The days are getting shorter, and the lights are coming on sooner as the racing gets underway. There was some great racing tonight, as well as some changes to the track, shaking things up for everyone. The tabletop in the back was cut into a double-double section, and the whoops were removed for a nice rhythm section. The track was in great shape keep the races interesting along with Jon “airtime Williams putting on a freestyle show along with a pit bike race to lighten up the mood for intermission. Hitting up the track first was 65 beginner. Off the start Lolito Eguia took the holeshot with Ian Murphy and Zennon Shain right behind him. Com32

ing around the second turn into the new rhythm section Shain made a move on the inside to take over second while Eguia took off out front. Shain was getting close in every corner only for Eguia to get out ahead on the exit. Coming into the sweeper Shain finally found a line on the inside to take over the lead as the top three kept things close the entire race. Coming across the finish line Shain took the win followed by Eguia and Murphy rounding out the podium. 85 Beginner hit the track with a vengeance as a great race came down to the last turns. The gates dropped with Kevin Mulligan getting out front around the first corner followed by Ethan Eslinger and Lolito Eguia. Hitting the second turn hard Eslinger went to the inside to jump out front with James Mcdannel and Mulligan right behind him now. Coming around to the finish line on the first lap Mcdannel took over the lead with Eslinger in second and Justin Friebele, who moved up to third. The battle raged on as the laps went by, on second to last turn before the checkered flag Eslinger put in a
great move hitting the inside and taking over first once again. He was able to stay out front for the last set of jumps and into the finish line for the win. Right behind him Mcdannel took second and Friebele held on for third. 50Sr was out for battle next with some real fast rippers out on the track. Off the line Krystian Janik on the KTM soared out front keeping that 50 maxxed out though the first
Eric Mack finished second in the 125cc 2 Stroke class.

turn. Following up the chase was Talan Zollers and Thomas Wojtasow. Moving through the first lap with little incident Janik was starting to gain a bit of a lead as Wojtasow was looking for a move to stick around Zollers. Coming through the sweep Wojtasow was able to keep in pinned on the inside to get by Zollers as the two continued to swap places through-out the end of the race. Janik took the win for the night with Wojtasow in second and Zollers third after some great racing. 250C came out strong tonight with the gates almost completely packed, having nineteen riders. They all rushed to the first turn putting Alec Leasure out front followed by Austin Beaty and Brett Guffey. Heading through the back section Guffey was on the rail and got around Beaty to take over second, with Leasure still out front. Coming around for the second lap Leasure lost the back end coming through the sweeper and went down. This pushed Guffey into the lead with Justin Peterson second after a hard charge through the pack, and Austin Beaty still hanging on in third. Hitting the new doubledouble section Peterson got around Guffey to take over the lead, and then started pulling away. 125 2stroke had Anthony Wallace jump out front with Chase Boykin and Eric Mack right behind. Zach Martino on a 1982 Yamaha ripped it hard into the rhythm section to jump into the lead with Wallace and now Alex White in third. Coming through the back section White got around Wallace and was on a move for the front. White went
inside of Martino making some contact, knocking Martino off balance. This moved White to the front with Wallace and Mack running close together. Next, through the rhythm section White got a little out of whack moving Wallace up front with Mack and second. White kept it going for third. After an eventful race the checkers came down for Wallace to take the win followed by Mack, and Boykin who made a last lap pass into third. Anthony Wallace was back out for Supermini action. The gate dropped with Wallace taking the holeshot with Ben Ibianskis in second and Gage Pace out there on the KTM in third. A couple corners later Pace and Ibainskis were sideby-side, with Pace getting past. Pace was keeping up with Wallace, looking for a place to pass, but was shut down and ran out of laps. They crossed the finish line with Wallace taking another win for the night followed up by Pace and Ibianskas. It was a great night out Joliet MX, with a good crowd and a great new layout keeping things interesting. With fall approaching fast things are winding down and some tracks are already done for the season. District 23 Ride For Rights those places that is a must see. There’s an old farm windmill turned sideways and mounted on the ceiling. It is a functioning ceiling fan. We sat at a table that was made from the saw blade out of an old sawmill and supported by an old pot belly stove. The entire bar is finished with pennies covered by clear laquear. The ketchup and mustard holders are leather saddlebags that are pulled down from the ceiling and hooked to the bar while you eat. An old metal bathtub turned upside down serves as the light fixture over the pool table. The entire ceiling is covered by hundreds of old all steel or Iron tractor seats. It is the only place I have been to that one can order a Wild The groups meeting in Durand before mounting up to start the loop.
Rochester, Minnesota - August 10 By Mike Quinn
T
his year’s Ride 4 Rights started off on a much better day than last year. Those that attended the inaugural ride will never forget that September morning and the cold 38 degree temperature we faced. This year the event was moved up to Saturday August 10th. The weather this year was beautiful, much warmer without being too hot. We had two groups of riders, one left Bob’s Cycle Supply, while other left from Spring Creek MX Park. The groups met up in Durand, WI for the start of a 127 mile loop through the Wisconsin alphabet roads. West Central WI offers some of the best riding in the Upper Midwest. You have to go the mountain areas for roads that offer the vistas and curves of these roads. Other than a sixteen mile stretch of Highway 35, the entire ride was on secSome of the great roads we were on.

ondary paved roads. We left, Durand picked up County AA and snaked our way South to the river town of Alma where we once again took a break and enjoyed the view from the overlook at Buena Vista Park. You can see the Alma lock and dam and many miles up and down river. From this vantage point it is easy to see how the nickname Mighty Mississippi was used to describe the river. From the overlook we headed south along the river until we picked up Waumandee and then Lower Eagle Valley Roads. We were now on the return portion of the loop. We rode down Alligator Slide Road into Pretzel Pass, roads whose names are an apt description of them. Other than the stretch of Highway 35 I don’t think we had a mile of straight road in the route. Our next break came at the very unique Bucknuckles Bar and Grill in Praag, Wi on Highway 88. This is another one of
Boar Burger. The term unique hardly does the place justice. Talk about recycling, this place is entirely recycled items. The remainder of the loop took us back to Durand via some very fun and curvy roads. At this point a few of the riders headed back to the Metro area while the remaining riders hit more twistys enroute to the historic river town of Wabasha were we ended the ride at the infamous Slippery’s. Good food, great company and lots of stories told at the table. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. And yes, we will do it again next year. So if you have a street legal machine you need to include this ride into your schedule of must attend events. The date of the 2014 ride will be on the D23 calendar by mid December. I want to thank all those that came and rode with us, and hope to see all of you and more next year. CYCLE USA, October 2013 35
All LaPorte at Pine Ridge
Nate LaPorte leading off the start in 250A
Athelstane, Wisconsin - September 1 By Cody Wills
I
t’s that time of the year again at Pine Ridge Raceway! It’s the Southeast Sales Labor Day Pro Am. Summer may have got a late start this year, but seemed to be sticking around as we head into the first part of September and Labor Day weekend. With the nice temps, the morning saw some early rain to make the first set of motos a little slick... not bad, but enough to make some scramble to the track vendors and make sure thier tear-offs were stocked and goggle setup was good to go. Wyatt Liebeck was simply dominating in the 65 class, getting out front early in moto one and controlling the race from there. Behind him the battle for second was between three riders; Colton Crevier, Hayden Waelchli, and Rocco Gravedoni. Gravedoni was the rider on the move having to make passes through the pack to get to this battle. In the end he would get to third as Crevier picked up second and tight behind in fourth was Waelchli. Moto two was a lot of the same as Liebeck checked out, but this time Crevier had to work his way up passing Waelchli, and Gravedoni to get into second. Waelchli seemed to have picked up a little more speed at the end of the moto getting into third, giving him third overall ahead of Gravedoni who would finish fourth overall. Becoming a more and more popular class is the two stroke class. Some places are running a two stroke only class or a Vet two stroke class. Pine Ridge has been running both and 36
CYCLE USA, October 2013
250A second turn pile up, everyone was alright
its becoming a hit. The two stroke B/C class had a battle for the ages in the first moto as Jordan Nielsen got out front early and close behind was the ever fast Colin Hass. Nielsen on a ‘01 Honda CR250 was on it as the track was a little slick and Jordan was dialed in on the track hitting every line smooth and in control. Hass had his bike rung out to stay with Nielsen, trying the inside and outside lines , but couldn’t make a move. Nielsen held on for the win. Hass picked up second and in a distant third was Matt Livingston. Moto two, Hass got out front quick and checked out while Nielsen was working his way forward from close to last, having to pass riders like Ben Wellens, Ian Malinowski, and
Matt Livingston. Easton Crevier found himself all alone in second, while Nielsen worked his way to third, giving him second overall with a 1-3 scores, behind Hass (2-1). One name can pretty much sum up this summer here in Wisconsin, Nate Laporte. Nate was a force to be reckoned with over the past few years but something this year changed. Laporte became more consistent, has more effortless speed, and makes fewer mistakes. So much can be said for what he has learned by running the Nationals. So when it comes time for me to talk about the two Pro-Am classes at the Pine Ridge, well you can take one guess who absolutely dominated it… Nate Laporte!
In the 250A class no one was in the same time zone as Laporte so we’ll talk about the battles behind him. Moto one saw a great great race for second between Jake Vaness, Ty Tyrrell, and Cody Vanbuskirk. Sportland two rider Vaness worked hard to get into second and stay there, which wasn’t easy with Ty Tyrrell and his YZ250 breathing down your neck. Cody Vanbuskirk worked his way up to the heels of these guys, but fourth was the best he could do this moto. Moto two saw Vaness who was fresh off an injury show the effects of that after running up front early, but by lap four he began to fade a bit, dropping back to sixth. Tyrrell stayed consistent, getting second this moto for second overall. Dawson Lincoln giving it his all in the sloppy mud! Vanbuskirk showed his imRidge crew is always trying to moto! Mays accomplished that provement of speed this year and improve and mix it up - we can and Tyrrell had to settle for picked up third in moto two only imagine what they will fourth, good enough for third which got him third overall. come up with next! overall. Mays went 7-3 for Open A was still the Nate Lafourth overall. Vanbuskirk was porte show but it wasn’t before Pine Ridge 9/1: consistent again to pick up a Matt Maier would get out front 125Jr: 1.Hunter Sayles 2.Colin Hass fifth! 3.Dennis Ponton 4.Jack Lacount and challenge each moto. att Peters claimed five class wins and both Amateur Fast Times at the King City Dirt Riders weekend double header hillclimb, and the Bell brothers took eight class wins and one youth Fast Time. Peters took the wins in the 450cc, 600cc four stroke and Senior (+40) classes Saturday night, then repeated in the four stroke and Senior classes on Sunday. His fast time Saturday night came in the Senior class where he set the first round time at 3.754 seconds on his KTM 450. In the second round, Jon Creek topped the hill in 3.665 seconds to move ahead, but Matt responded with a fine 3.642 second run to take the class win, and the Fast Time award. Sunday brought a similar scenario, as Peters set the first round time to beat at 4.008 seconds in the Senior class, then Troy Camerer overtook him with a nice 3.814 second run on his Suzuki in the second round. Matt was up to the challenge, however, and flew his KTM over in 3.662 seconds to take the class win and also his second Amateur Fast Time award of the weekend. Derick and Jacob Bell won two classes each day with Derick taking the Youth Fast Time Sunday. His wins came in the 65cc class with Mitch Moran running second Saturday and 40

Lilah McGurer second on Sunday. He took the 85Jr class win with Lilah second Saturday night, then repeated that class win Sunday with a 4.395 second time with McGurer running second again. Christian Fitts claimed the Youth Fast Time Saturday night with a 4.528 second time on his Yamaha, with Levi Peters second. Peters took that class win Sunday with Jacob Bell second. Jacob Bell, Derick’s big brother, claimed the wins in both the 125cc and 200cc classes both days, with Levi Peters following in second place in both classes both days. Mike Pulver was a triple class winner for the weekend, taking the 400cc Stock class Saturday night, then both the 400 Stock and Open Stock classes on Sunday. Jon Creek was his closest challenger Saturday night, and Troy Camerer and Steve Bell ran second behind him Sunday. Jared McKay had a good day Sunday, first taking the 450cc class win with a fine 3.757 second round run on his Kawasaki, overtaking Peters who held the first round lead with a 3.780 second time. Peters crashed on his second run, but his first ride held up for second place with Kirk Gorsuch close behind him in 3.787 seconds. McKay and Peters faced off one more time, in the one run, winner take all King of the Hill class for the ten fastest riders of the day. Peters had already nailed down his second straight Amateur Fast Time, and flew his KTM over the top in an outstanding 3.637 seconds, the fastest overall time of the weekend to that point, and appeared to be on the verge of yet another big win. But McKay twisted the throttle on his Kawasaki and held just a tad longer, and shot over the top in an eye popping 3.587 seconds to snatch the win and lay claim to being the fastest of the fast with the fastest overall time of the entire double header. Other fast guys in the class included Dylan Brady in third, Gorsuch in fourth and Steve Kuhl fifth.

Berm Benders Labor Day weekend

abor Day weekend 2013 was a big deal for the folks at Berm Benders Raceway near Mora, Minnesota. With practice on Saturday and racing on Sunday and Monday (with Monday being a double points race) the final day of the track’s 2013 Civil Series that pits racers from northern MN against visiting racers from the southern part of the state in a season long battle for points and bragging rights. Competitors must race seven of the ten races in order to be counted in year-end results. In addition to the on-track action there were after hours activities and competitions to keep the folks entertained. On Saturday night there was a tire changing contest. The winner was Jake Bostrom. On Sunday night there was a bike balancing competition. The object here was, when your bike’s front axle crossed a line painted on the ground, the clock started. Twenty feet away was another line. When the front wheel crossed that mark, the clock stopped. The rider that rode the event the slowest without putting his feet down was the winner. With a time of 46 seconds, Conor Ahlers on his Honda CRF450 was the winner. There was also a bean bag toss tourney, a dunk tank on both Saturday night and Sunday night. On Saturday night, Berm Benders owner and track maintenance guru, Kurt Caswell even took a turn in the dunk tank, much to the delight of the crowd. With cool temps and partly cloudy skies on both days, the track was in prime condition,
thanks to the grooming and watering efforts of Mr Caswell and crew, working well after dark with lights burning on the tractors and trucks. The competition in the 50cc classes was fierce. The speed that the racing mini-titans would carry through the rhythm sections on the track were truly impressive. With the front runners it seems like they have two settings. One being full throttle to the stops. Some of those kids have no fear, and they are not afraid to pound the daylights out of the suspension on their (mostly) KTMs because they know dad will fix them right up again.
The Sampson family getting ready.
Jake Paige continued on his winning ways in the 50cc Premix class by going 1-1 on his KTM. In the battle for second, Ashley Rasmussen came home next with a 3-2 finish with KTM mounted Collin Keeney standing on the third step of the podium with 5-3 finishes. In +25B competition, KTM #918 mounted Patrick Miller earned a hard fought win over the always fast Courtney Sampson on his Kawasaki while Wade Hasse from Pennock MN rounded out the top three. The Supermini class was a real throw-down with #15 Drew Slocum wringing his KTM racer to within an inch of its life to pull out the win over the Team Green Kawasaki of South Dakota’s Jacob Geiger. Nipping at the heels of Zimmerman, MN’s Slocum, Geiger finished a short time ahead of third in class James White. Perennial favorite in the 250C class, #558 Devin Donaho wheeled his Liquid Nitro Energy Drink sponsored Yamaha YZ250F to a convincing win over Honda mounted Charles Anderson and the KTM of Brad Bauer from River Falls Wi. Donaho went on to finish the weekend with wins on Monday also. Shayanna Wilson came out to Berm Benders to put her stamp on the Labor Day racing action by thrashing her immaculately prepared Yamaha YZ250F to1-1 finishes in the Women’s class. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for her though, as she had to fend off a continuous attack from #77 Mariah Braastad, who in turn had to defend her position from a hard charging Yamaha mounted Trisha Hoover, who rounded out the day in third. The 125cc 12+ race always has spectators lining the fence, filled with nervous anticipation. The 2-stroke racing machines coupled with youthful exuberance is a mix that is always entertaining. Today’s class didn’t disappoint. Noah McPherson, down from the Port of Duluth struck gold, going 1-1 on the day with “The Enforcer” Evan Hills up from Lindstrom, MN to give the first place finisher fits, but in the end, just didn’t quite have the speed to head McPherson. Max Walburg rounded out the top three. There’s always good racing in the +30C class, and today Jay Kangas took a commanding lead early in both motos to claim the top spot at day’s end with the #79x Suzuki of Ryan Ingebritson from Coon Rapids going 22 and Dan Hegman third on his Yamaha. Aaron Boatman seems to be in a class by himself this year in 85cc 9- 11. The dude stretched out an early lead and then ran to the finish line with a hard charging KTM mounted Drew Sampson in second and Curtis Bjorn finishing 3-3. The fastest of the fast lined up for an action packed two motos in the 250A class. Fast guy CYCLE USA, October 2013

Jake Loberg from Ham Lake dropped the hammer at the falling of the gate and held the throttle to the stops to fend off a continuous barrage of passing attempts from the Kawasaki of Jared Trepanier, down from Bemidji, MN to enjoy the Labor Day festivi- ties. Tristan Titus came home in a not too distant third place. For Monday (Labor Day) morning practice, out came the blankets and sweatshirts as a chill swept through the grounds at night. On track action was HOT! When +40C took to the line the top three finishers were all talking smack about world domination and how it would all start today at the drop of the gate. In the battle for motocross supremacy, Yamaha mounted Brian Bohlman wrestled his Yamaha to a first place finish followed by Brett Sieberlich, also on a Yamaha and #8 Jesse John throwin down for third after filling up his personal gas tank with a delicious breakfast courtesy of his sweetheart of a wife, Angela! In Women’s racing, Mariah “The Rocket Chick” Braastad took command in the early laps of the race to crank out another win while Kayla Swenson glided to second and #74 KTM mounted Chloe Windahl slipped her

broken leg out of its soft cast and into her racing boots to soldier on to a third place in both motos. In Schoolboy 12-16, Noah McPherson busted a move to secure first place on the day on his Yamaha. Kawasaki mounted Adam Godfrey blazed to second ahead of Michael Hemmerich. The checkered flag of the last race of the day closed out the 2013 Series competition with rave reviews from all present. A relatively safe weekend was had by all and the staff at Berm Benders put on yet another world class event for moto families in MN. They are a true asset to the motocross community, we are fortunate to have them. eautiful weather graced the Friday night Georgetown Fair MX as riders from all over the state of Illinois and as far away as Texas came to do battle. Promoted by Pleasure Riders MC and sponsored by Langley Trucking, Rick Smith Backhoe and Trucking, Sidell Agri Service and Martin Equipment, the track build began around 10PM Thursday night and was ready for racing on Friday. This fair race is different from most local fair races as it is AMA and District 17 sanctioned. The track features technical rhythm lanes along with high flying table tops and double jumps. Every year the fans and racers look forward to this event. This year the races kicked off with the 125cc class. Both motos the holeshot went to Chanc Persons on his 1990’s Honda CR125. Persons, at the age of 41 was almost older than all of his other competitors combined! You could see the smile on Persons’ face through his helmet as he was on rails out on the track, loving every minute of it. He was blitzing through the rhythm lanes and blasting through the corners. eptember first marked the end of the Nuke series this year, following ten exciting rounds. Add in a Lorretta Lynns Regional and it has been a great year at the track. With some really close totals in the championship standings for the series, there were some important races out there today. The late summer heat wave was kicking out there today, but it didn’t slow the action one bit. The track was in great shape as always, with everyone showing up to get the last Nuke race in for the season. Everything got underway today with 65Jr. In the first moto Evan Krisch took the win followed by John Perovic and Wyatt Mattson. They all lined up for moto two in the afternoon heat, and Perovic got out front for an early lead. Following close was Brandon Martyniak and Wyatt Mattson. Coming around the third corner Martyniak moved up front taking the inside line while everyone stayed close through the rest of the lap. In the third lap things shook up with Krisch moving up to third, coming back from a bad start with Mattson still in second. On the last lap Krisch found his spot and made it into second as Martyniak took the win. Krisch won the overall, Martyniak second overall (4-1) and Mattson pulled down a solid third overall. Open B was one of the classes where points were real tight. Nick Inman and Mark Marincic had been battling all summer over points; Inman had several setbacks riding through an injured ankle and a myriad of bike problems. In the first moto Marincic took the win with Jacob Wever second and Inman, on a borrowed bike took third. The second moto took off with Inman grabbing the holeshot followed by Wever and Damon Thomas. The gates dropped on the second moto with Horcher getting out front followed by Cameron Poces and Smith. Coming around the third corner Smith took the inside of Poces to take over second on the hunt for first again. D16 Points at Sugar Maple MX Hillpoint, Wisconsin - Aug. 18 By Dave Hollub
M
id August in Wisconsin is a perfect time to hit up one track for two days of racing, collecting District 16 points just makes it even better. Jason Erdmann had Sugar Maple MX ready Friday and 50 riders showed up to gain an edge on the competition. About 175 entires were there both Saturday and Sunday to put on two days of fast action. When +25B/C took their gatedrop Dain Denman was out front in the first corner with Brandon Miller was close behind. By the time they came through the rollers on the west end Miller was out front. Andy Draeger got past Denman before the end of lap one and settled into second. Tom Sweet was running in third before he headed into Hollub’s Hollow on lap two and he would hold off challenges from Denman to the checkers. In moto two Miller cruised to another moto win without much pressure. Draeger once again settled into second after holding off

Denman on the first lap. Sweet started challenging Denman on lap three for third position, and found an opening and slipped past on the white flag lap to grab another third place moto finish. Andy Kost was out front all day in 125 Junior as he swept
both motos with Eli Walters in second and Brady Bill third both motos. Seth Doeberlein and Max Steinhorst seemed to find each other in every moto they raced today. In 125 Junior Steinhorst slipped into fourth just ahead of Doeberlein on lap three only to fall in the final corner just before the finish of moto one. In moto two Steinhorst was running third until Bill got around him on lap two. Once Bill got around Steinhorst had Doeberlein right on him and they battled the rest of the moto with Steinhorst prevailing this time. Eugene Wolff jumped out front in 65cc and looked like he was going to cruise to the win. Mitchell Malaney was pushing Wolff hard on the final lap and made his move into the lead. Next came Aidan McCormick who also slipped past Wolff taking away second before the checkers. Wolff jumped out front again in moto two but this time stayed there to the finish. McCormick was
running second until Malaney swept by him on lap two in the Daytona corner. McCormick did not back off and stayed all over Malaney until he finally re-took second in the rollers on the white flag lap. Malaney converted a 1/2 day into the overall win with Wolff (3/1) second and McCormick (2/3) third. Jeff Ramsay was out front at the start of Senior +50. Wayne Welzien was able to get past Ramsay in the rollers. On the lap three Ramsay started closing the gap and was out front as the white flag came out. Welzien jumped out front right away in moto two with Ramsay being chased by Michael Barta. Welzien looked like he was going to get an easy moto win until the final lap Ramsay began pushing and started closing the gap. Ramsay was on Welzien’s rear fender as they went through the rollers for the final time, but despite sticking a wheel in through the last corners he wasn’t able to get by. Welzien took the overall with Ramsay and Barta finishing up the podium for the day. Welzien, “First moto I got a little tired at the end and Jeff slipped by me. In the second

This was my race and protecting a charge from by Bill. Telfer took I held on since he got the overall yesterday. I’d like to thank Southeast Sales, they helped me out with this KTM and I am really happy I am back on a 250 2stroke again. Open B shared the gate-drop with Open A, so it was a six lap moto. Jason Bernhardt grabbed the lead at the holeshot but when they hit the rollers on lap one Tylor Skodras powered past and began cruising to the win. Bernhardt was holding on in second but by lap three had Kail McCormack all over him looking for a chance to slide past. McCormack pushed hard but went down on lap five ending his day with a crushed radiator. Daniel Kraemer was now running third and held on to the finish. The moto two running order was Skodras, Bernhardt, and Kraemer as they rounded the Daytona corner and stayed constant to the finish. Eric Kessenich finished third in 250C. Bryce Telfer came around the
the overall with Kessenich (3/2) edging out Bill (2/3) for second. Sugar Maple had Quads on the schedule this weekend and when Quad B/C took their gate-drop Gabe Dommer jumped out front with Evan Clemens in second and Rowdy Jinsky third. Jinsky lost his position to Bret Beier on lap two. Kyle Ertmer made his move in the west end on lap five to get past Beier and then held on in third to the finish. Dommer was again out front in moto two as he opened a gap on the rest of the class. Beier was in second but by the checkers both Clemens and then Ertmer had slipped by him. Dommer (1/1) was good for the overall with Clemens (2/2) second and Ertmer (3/3) third. 50Jr ran right after the Quads and Ayden Price was out front to stay by the time he hit the Daytona corner on lap one. Kaiden Snyder was running in second with Peyton Poker third. Peyton Poker soon had pressure from Carson Syverson and then Tyler Poker. Both Syverson and Tyler got past Peyton before the checkers flew. Price was out front at the holeshot for moto two but Snyder got by going into the scoring area on lap one. Price was out front again by the end
of lap two and then Snyder went down a couple laps later taking him out of the chase for the lead. Tyler Poker finished moto two in second just ahead of Syverson to clinch second overall. Price, “I didn’t get the holeshot in the first race but I got around the guy in front of me. I just tried really hard and stayed in good lines. Once I was out front I didn’t have any trouble. Second moto I was next to Kaiden in the start but he got around me. I got by him before the end of the first lap and then just rode fast. I didn’t know he went down until I went past him. Thank you to The Cage, Sletton Pest Management, Robbins Manufacturing, my Uncle Joe, and Mom and Dad for sponsoring me.” The one constant at Sugar Maple MX is that Jason Erdmann just can not go race to race without tweaking the track layout. This month was no exception as he switched up a couple sections and from comments around the pits he hit it right as usual. Most riders complimented the way the changes improved the flow and made for more passing lines. If you have not been out here make a point of either coming out for a race or an open ride. Laporte stretched out his lead throughout the moto and took home the moto one win followed by Matt Maier, Dylan Ziolkowski, Colton Karl and Justis Heckendorf. As moto two developed, the leaders again made the rise to the top and were mixing it up. Laporte was out front but it was Karl who was trying to improve the most on his fourth in moto one. Laporte took the win with Karl second. Maier came in third beating out Ziolkowski and Jake Vaness. Heckendorf went 5-6 for fifth overall on the day. Open B was next coming off the line with #26 Blake Bocek getting the holeshot. Kyle Ahola on his new TM bike got a good start also, and kept pace with Bocek throughout the moto. Sawyer Schmidtman, Casey Collegmon, and Matt Livingston rounded out the top five. By the time this moto was finished lines were starting to really take shape. Later in the day when moto two launched, the track was a little drier. The conditions seemed to favor Ahola and his new TM as they were out front leading the pack. Schmidtman, Collegmon were battling over second place and Austin Hamburger and Bocek were rounding out the top five. By winning moto two, Ahola grabbed the overall for the day. Consistency for Schmidtman was key
Bailey Otis putting in a strong second place ride in 85cc 9-13.
also as his 3-2 scores grabbed him the runnerup spot and Bocek’s 1-5 netted him a third overall. Collegmon and Hamburger rounded out the top five in the overall standings. There was a big gate in the Mini 85 7-11 class. Carter Biese might have a slight advantage at the Tigerton facility (family owns the facility), but for the most part it really doesn’t matter because the kid can ride. He was putting down some pretty impressive lap times, and making it look easy out front. Wyatt Liebeck normally is giving chase but he went down by the tower on lap one. Luckily he was able to get up and get back on it. Mixed in with 85cc 12-15 class there were a bunch of mini’s out on the track at the same time so it was difficult to keep track, but it is nice to see a big class of 85’s out there for the future of District 16MX. So Bailey Otis and Max Early were doing their best to keep pace with Biese. Kadin Ahrndt, Tristin Woolf and Haiden Waelchli were also having a battle of their own.

Banquet & Dinner
November 9, 2013
Peewee class riders in staging.
Moto two saw Biese check out again. This time though, Early was able to best Otis for second. Liebeck finished in fourth and Woolf rounded out the top five in the moto. Otis grabbed third overall ahead of Woolf and Ahrndt. 125Jr was led by #12 Hunter Sayles on his new Yamaha YZ125, closely followed by Dennis Ponton. Easton Crevier was in third, ahead of Brady Bill and Tristin Fuerst. By the second lap Sayles was gapping Ponton and Crevier. Bill and Fuerst were dueling most of the moto just ahead of Nate Telfer and Connor Anderson. The order pretty much stayed that way until the end. Sayles again put his Yamaha out front and stayed there through the second moto. Ponton and Crevier were two - three as Bill and Fuerst rounded out the top five. It’s fun to watch when two riders seem to catch on to each other and go to town so to speak. Fantasy Moto used two breaks in the action to work on the track instead of waiting until intermission. This seemed to work exceptionally well as the track continually was being touched up and watered giving all the riders prime conditions throughout the day. Considering I was one of the last motos on the day I was worried the track would be hammered but with the two breaks, even late in the day the track was still in great shape. Another great day up here!
