Great racing at Trojan

CYCLE USA, September 2010
here were a lot of puddles and mud around the track, but the staff at Reads Racing worked hard to get the track in shape for racing. No rain during the day, and a beautiful evening made conditions perfect for racing. The Quad B riders were the first on the track, and honda rider Michael Schooley was out to take care of business tonight. In both motos he blasted out of the gates to take the lead. Just a quad length behind was Ryan Head and then James Akers. After getting further onto the track Schooley was able to stretch his lead a little, eventually finishing 1-1 in the class. Head rode hard but couldn't catch Schooley, riding to second each time. First time racer, Tyler Campbell was just excited to be racing. He said he was at the track hours before practice began because he was so anxious. He was pleased with his fourth place overall finish, and plans to be back for more rac-
ing. He picked a good night to start. The second race of the night was a combination of different classes being run at the same time. On the first start several riders went down in the first turn, so the red flag came out. The second start was good and Allison Vrba, mounted on a Yamaha, took the holeshot. Vrba was the only rider in the 14/24 class, but maintained the overall lead that moto. In the first moto for the 250C class, KTM rider Kavin Thomas and Ben Carson came out of the gates riding bike to bike. Thomas pulled back the throttle a little more and was able to pull into the lead as Tyler Powers and Hunter Westphal were coming up fast. Thomas held the lead until he fell in a corner, breaking a clutch lever, forcing a DNF that moto. Just as Westphal was moving up, he fell in the same corner as well. Taking advantage of this was Powers who moved into the number one ride with Jacob Kline second. Powers crossed the finish line first, followed by Kline then Carson. The second moto was a good battle with many position changes. Carson moved up to first, with Damon Meek and Joshua Foor battling for second. First moto winner Powers had some difficulty this time, and fell back a bit. Carson rode hard to cross the finish line first, followed by Meek and Foor. This was a fun one to watch for sure. Another exciting race was put on by the Quad A class. Some of the riders got stuck
on the gate the first drop, so they lined up again. Matthew Forrest mounted on his Suzuki, took the holeshot with Robert Kintner and Christopher Porter were right behind. By the end of the first lap Kintner, on his Yamaha, was leading the group until he went wide into a berm and couldn't get his machine to restart. These guys were riding quad to quad, so when Kintner went out Forrest was there to take the lead again. Suzuki rider, Austin Shrock had been working his way up from further back and was now pressuring Forrest. Forrest tried his best to hold Shrock off, but couldn't do it. Shrock stole the lead and crossed the finish line first with Porter third. In the second moto Kintner was back, and going for the holeshot. In the first turn, he was pushed tight to the inside of the turn and got stuck in the dirt and the other riders got around him before he could get going again. The way these guys were riding tonight, there was no room to lose time like Kintner had. It just wasn't his night. Shrock and Porter were at it again battling for the lead before Shrock pulled ahead. Forrest and John Manning were fighting for third, running quad to quad nearly the entire moto. Manning found an opportunity to pull ahead and move up to third late in the race. These guys were just so close it was one of the best shows of the evening. Shrock again took the win, followed by Porter then Manning. Moving on to the 65cc (7-9) class, Frazier Motorsports rider Grant Topping took the holeshot both motos. He blasted out of the
gates with fury and was ready to go. Even with that, fellow fast guy Evan Faucett riding on his Cobra was able to pass Topping both motos and finish 1-1. Topping and Frazier Motorsports rider Justin Stichter had a heated battle going on for second place. In the first moto Stichter was able to get around Topping and finish second. In moto two, Topping and Stichter were riding bike to bike. Heading into the final lap, Topping and Stichter bumped bikes, causing Stichter to fall. Topping sped away and took second place this moto. In the 250B class, Allison Vrba was on the track again. Vrba came out in the lead again and seemed to be all throttle the entire moto. KTM rider William Crossley and Kyle Thomas weren’t far behind. Despite riding hard, no one could get past Vrba. In moto two, Vrba, Thomas and Justin Brumfield pulled out to be the leaders. Thomas managed to edge Kavin Thomas airing it out in 250B. past Vrba and win this moto. Results: Vrba was second and Brumfield third. Best Turn-Out In Decades Mora, Minnesota - July 24, 25 By Michael Pohl
T
he Norsemen’s Mora Enduro has been the Grand Daddy of Minnesota Enduros since before America put a man into space. It’s been held in the very same forest, every single year since 1957 (a full decade before motocross took hold in the USA). It’s become an institution, really, what with only three men having held the title “Trial Boss”: Willie Larson, Dale Greenwald and currently Todd Mathwig. Today, it is closed forest, but with a special permit, motorcyclists get to ride these historic trails once per year, and what a ride it was. The 18 mph posted average tells you that a tight course lies ahead. It was a hot and muggy day in the woods, but that has been par for the course these days. Thankfully, rain just beforehand left the trails in perfect condition. No mud, no standing water and no dust. Just 55 miles (A/B riders) of tight, technical, single track. C riders rode 36 miles of the course, with 64% of them finishing the entire course. These were superbly prepped trails. The Norsemen mowed the entire course! But it wasn’t like riders were riding down a fairway.

Collin Maynard.
AA class rider Brian Hasslen finished second.
Even with the mowing, the trails were extremely challenging. Numerous log crossings and hundreds of tree roots, at every conceivable angle across the trail, kept the challenge factor high. Stumps, just waiting to squash rider’s toes, were waiting under every grass clump. The tight, sinuous trails rarely allowed even a stab at third gear. But with the mowing, it did allow riders to develop a rhythm throughout most of the course. It is hard to image better, longer or more flowing single track. All of the hard work put in by the Norsemen paid off, and was appreciated by every rider. Nate Ferderer took his fourth consecutive Enduro win this year, with the stunningly low score of 18. To give some perspective on that performance, the next closest score was a 27 brought in by A-rider Giles Radtke. Ferderer is absolutely dominating the D23 Enduro series this year. Craig Holasek has been at Ferderer’s boot heels at most events, but hasn’t quite been able to top this hard charging young gun. It will be interesting to see if Ferderer can sweep the entire series, something last accomplished by current enduro champ Holasek in 2007.
Voted “Enduro of the Year” the last four years in a row, Todd Mathwig said this was the biggest turnout for a Mora Enduro in 25 years, with 158 adult riders and 47 mini riders. The Norsemen Super Series has really spiced up attendance at every event the club has put on this year, pulling in almost 50% more riders per event. At the Trollhagen Hare Scrambles on September 19th, one very lucky rider, who has ridden all this year’s Norsemen events, will take home a totally trail tricked out Yamaha YZ250F, courtesy of the Norsemen, Larson’s Cycle and Hyde Racing. It will be a very exciting day for all D-23 riders, indeed. Walnut, Illinois - July 25 By Jennifer Kenyon Photos by Nicole Falk
S
unset Ridge was scheduled to host Round one of the Racer-X Senior Series on Saturday, but due to the excess amounts of rainfall throughout the week the track was cancelled. Sunday brought a new day though, as the loamy sand soaked up the rain and turned the track into nothing short of amazing. Of the 300 entries in attendance, fifty-five of the entries were on four wheelers, which is pretty impressive in the Midwest and especially helpful with track conditions as they were a little wet during practice. Quad A brought excitement as twelve riders lined the gate with hopes of taking home some cash. Jason Wehrli captured the moto one holeshot aboard his Suzuki, followed by Zach “Squirrel” Harris and Ethan Pickard aboard his Honda. Harris stayed out front the entire moto, putting a pretty big gap on second place Wehrli. Pickard closed in on Wehrli by the middle of the moto, using the outside berms to gain the speed. They came through the finish line corner side by side, Wehrli on the inside and Pickard outside; Wehrli protected his inside line and held Pickard off to maintain his second place position in moto one. In a battle for fourth, Michael May and Cory Timm had their Hondas pinned as they went side by side over the rollers where Timm made his way around May. Harris had a flawless ride taking the 12
CYCLE USA, September 2010
moto win. In moto two, Harris shot out of the hole and never looked back. Wehrli got a bad holeshot this time and was forced to work his way back while Justine Medine led a pack of five riders in the battle for third place. Derek Hasley, Wehrli, Jacob Lawson and Jacob Conroy were all on the rear of Medine looking for a passing opportunity. Pickard used this to make a break for it, securing his second place spot behind Harris. Medine held the pack off, finishing the moto with a third, giving him a 6-3 for fourth overall. Wehrli couldn’t make it to the podium as he did in moto one, but finished strong with 2-4 for third overall. Lawson went 7-5 for fifth overall. Cesar Vega jumped out to the early lead in moto one of the 250A class as he settled in behind +30A leader Greg Braet who dropped on the same gate. Kevin Markwardt got off to a rough start after sliding out in the first set of corners. Markwardt got back up and bolted through the pack, quickly making his way to second. Vega led for a majority of the moto until he went down on the last lap, giving Markwardt the well-deserved victory after riding the wheels off his Yamaha 250F. Braet claimed the +30A win with Markwardt hot on his tail. Jordan Ihle took the second spot with Tyler Duncan third, Vega piecing together a fourth and Chaz Braden rounded out the top five. Markwardt grabbed the holeshot in moto two with Ihle and Braden close behind. +30A leader Braet put up a tough fight battling back
and forth with Markwardt for the first couple of laps. Markwardt led Braet for most of the race but tired out towards the end as Braet turned it up and moved past. Markwardt played it safe, knowing that Braet wasn’t in his class and paced himself in order to get the overall. Duncan spent most of the moto holding up the third spot until Braden finally made his move around. Duncan wasn’t about to give up though, riding on Braden’s rear tire all the way to the finish. Markwardt had a steady 1-1 for the overall followed by Ihle with 2-2. Duncan went 3-4 to take the third overall. One of the largest classes of the day was Open C, with twenty riders lining the gate. Daniel Keefe of Libertyville, Illinois prevailed through the congested holeshot in moto one to take the early lead until Jeremy Smith held it wide open through the rollers to take over the lead. Brandon Benner and Cody Ruschke had a good battle going as Benner finally went for the pass on Ruschke over the ski jump, moving himself into fifth place. Smith finished with a comfortable lead as Keefe strolled in the second spot and Wyatt Edwards held on to third. Moto two saw a new face out front early on with Nick Stiles taking the holeshot in front of moto one leaders Keefe and Smith. Robert Vitullo, after finishing 12th in moto one, turned it up a few notches as he jetted past Stiles for the lead. Keefe followed suit as he made the pass on Stiles, where he then set his sights on Vitullo. Keefe knew that if he
could get the moto two win that he could take home the overall, so the pressure was on as the white flag came out. Keefe and Vitullo went back and forth the entire lap and it wasn’t until the last corner that Keefe put the move on Vitullo capturing the moto win as well as the overall. Jeremy Smith finished out with a fourth, going 1-4 for the second overall right in front of the 5-3 of Benner for the final podium spot. Sam Shamie of Franklin Park, Illinois got off to a great start in moto one of the 85Sr class, leading the pack around the first corner. Logan Skaggs wasted no time getting out front as he aired it out over the ski jump, moving into the lead. Skaggs put a gap between himself and the Shamie who put up a good fight at the beginning of the moto. Jordan Mackiewicz gave Shamie his best efforts but couldn’t manage to get around him, taking a third in moto one. Skaggs proved why he’s one of the best mini riders in the area after winning three of four motos for the day, the other being a DNF in the Supermini class. Skaggs jetted out to the holeshot in moto two of 85Sr and quickly put some distance between himself and the second place Tyler Scott by being the only mini rider to do the ski jump. Scott held on for the second place finish, giving him second overall and Billy Holzapfel worked his way up to an impressive third place after a midpack holeshot. Mackiewicz had some bad luck going down early in the moto and finished up with a seventh giving him fifth overall for. Youngsters step up at Hurricane Hills Mazeppa, Minnesota - Aug. 1 By Mike Nelson
T
he youth classes were well represented out at Hurricane Hills for the Quad races this weekend, and put on quite a show for the fans. With the season coming into its home stretch and championships still up for grabs, these young riders really went after each other knowing that every point they could earn would be critical if they wanted to come out on top at the end of the year. Caden Anderson was all business on his 70 Production ride, looking to make up ground on current points leader Bodie Swanson. Anderson got the holeshot in the first moto but had his hands full the entire race with Swanson right behind, looking for an opening and making several challenges. Anderson held on for the win and took the second moto as well. Swanson got second place for the day, and if he can finish that well for the rest of the season, he should take the District jacket this year. Aaron Johnson gave himself a little breathing room in the 90 Production class. Caden Anderson took the holeshot in the first moto, but Johnson was able to make the pass on the first lap for the lead. Beau Tibbetts got by Anderson early in the second lap and set his sights on the leader. Johnson held on for the win and also took the second

moto win, adding to his points lead over close contender, Dominic Bartell. Bartell had a rough day and found himself struggling with traffic back in the pack, winding up with a fourth place on the day. In the 50cc class, it was current leader Christopher Leaym getting the jump in the first moto. Leaym, at age eight and in his final year on a 50, took the holeshot and led the entire way through the race. With a comfortable lead, Leaym got some insane air off the first jump on his way to the morning win, but paid the price as the youngster learned that he’s not indestructible. His back was sore for the second moto and he basically just went out and turned laps to complete the day, opening the door for Alex Sleyster and Nate Otte to make some gains in the points. On the other end of the class spectrum, Mike Barnhart ended up with a nice double win taking the Open A and 450A classes. He got off to a rough start, having mechanical issues and finishing at the back of the pack in both of his first motos, but got it figured out and hit it hard for his second motos. When the gates dropped for the second 450A

moto, Barnhart got the jump on current class leader Mark Olejnichak. As they came out of the back section and headed for the big double near the end of the first lap, Barnhart opted for the conservative approach and Olejnichak saw an opportunity. He nailed the throttle and flew the double, but came down hard breaking the right rear axle out of his Honda to end his day. With the weather finally giving them a break, the track was in better shape than it has been for most of the season, and the staff out at Hurricane Hills once again did a great job of putting together an awesome day of racing. Dissell outlasts all at FVOR Wedron, Illinois - July 17 By Nikki Dixon
R
ound three of the Fox Valley Off-Road series was greeted with dry conditions for the first time this year. The course had a good mix of terrain, with the big bike course looping together all of the morning courses, including plenty of hills, logs, off camber trails, rock creek, motocross track, and a brand new section of tight trail. The AA class was stacked with several big names from the area, including ISDE legend and AMA Hall of Famer Jeff Fredette. The race action was close and intense for the entire 10 lap race, with countless position changes, and less than a minute separating the top four at the checkered flag. Kyleer Vance grabbed the dead engine start holeshot, followed by Justin Schmitt and the rest of the 15 riders in the AA and A classes. Vance was still out front at the first checkpoint, chased by Daniel Janus, Schmitt, Dan Burgard, and Matt Dissell. Janus took over the lead on lap two, with Vance right behind, then a small gap back to Burgard, Dissell, and Ryan Moss, Fredette, Schmitt, and Jeff Kaylor, who were all within a few seconds of each other. Janus led everyone the next three laps, while Moss capitalized on mistakes by Vance to move into second on lap four. Then on lap five, Fredette took over the second spot behind Janus. Lap six had a new leader, as Vance clocked a ten minute flat lap to

move into the lead, which would end up the fastest lap of the entire day. But he lost some time on the next lap, as Dissell charged into the lead, followed by Fredette, Janus, Vance, and Burgard. Dissell sprinted on the next lap to break away, logging his fastest lap with a 10:04, and pulling nearly thirty seconds over second place Fredette. The race behind Dissell tightened up on lap nine, with Fredette, Janus, and Burgard within fifteen seconds of each other at the white flag. Dissell pushed ahead to take a huge win in a star-studded class, while Burgard logged his fastest lap with a 10:05 on the final lap, to pass both Fredette and Janus for second place. Janus also turned his fastest on lap ten with a 10:13, but ended up one second behind Burgard at the checkers. Fredette and Vance wrapped up the top five, and were the final riders to complete ten laps. Clinton Pherigo led the +30A class through the first checkpoint, trailed by Joe Janas, Brian Roland, Travis Held, and Oscar Rodriguez, who were all within a few bike lengths. Patrick McClure wicked it up on the next lap making several passes, and logging an eleven minute lap, which would end up the fastest of the class. This moved McClure into the lead, followed by Pherigo and Randy Southard. McClure answered with an 11:03 on the following lap, stretching out his lead, as Janas got around Pherigo for second. Pherigo regained the second spot on the next lap, and set

his sights on catching McClure. The gap was sixteen seconds at the white flag. Pherigo charged on the final lap, but came up five seconds short at the finish, as McClure carded the win. Pherigo, Janas, and Held all finished on the lead lap, with Southard rounding out the top five. In +30B, Shane Harmon had a great start, leading JJ Cones and the rest of the class around the first turn. Cones took over the lead on lap two, with Harmon just two seconds back. Cones opened up a little gap on the next lap, while Jerimy Han-
lin moved into second, followed by Harmon, Matt Wamhoff, and Adam Fusinetti, with only ten seconds separating second place from fifth. Harmon and Hanlin mixed it up until lap seven, when Hanlin dropped out of the race. Harmon got around Cones on lap seven, logging the fastest lap of the class with an 11:34. But Cones answered back on the final lap, by passing Harmon and matching his 11:34, and crossing the finish line one second in front of Harmon. Wamhoff and Fusinetti completed the top four, and all finished on the lead lap. Doug Propper grabbed the

holeshot in the 15-rider +40B class, and led through the first checkpoint, followed by Jeff Hartzell and Ed Howard. Steve Perkins laid down a twelve minute lap to take over the lead on lap two, and never looked back. Perkins completed nine laps for the win, with his fastest lap time an 11:22. Hartzell ran in second the entire race, but lost some time on the final lap, allowing Jeff Oldenburg to snatch the second spot. Hartzell, William Horsley, and Joel Huggins rounded out the top five. Gary Peterson and Rick Mahrt led the 10-rider +50 class into the woods. Peterson was out front through the scoring tower for the first three laps, while Wally Mika sliced through the pack after a bad start. Mika took over the lead on lap four, and then hammered out four laps around the twelve minute mark to take the win. Ken Matway reeled in Peterson for second. Mahrt, Glen Kaszynski, and Si Keith rounded out the top six, and all completed eight laps. Open C was the biggest class of the day, with 21 riders. Tony Spizzirri nailed the holeshot, trailed by Ed Villadonga and Nathan Schmid. Spizzirri and Schmid led at the first checkpoint, followed by Devon Fredrick, Jason Hammes, and Travis Miller. Fredrick caught and passed Spizzirri on lap three, but had troubles on the next two laps, and dropped out of the race. Spizzirri cruised to the win, completing eight laps, with his fastest a 12:12. Villadonga reeled in Miro Tuska for second late in the race. Tuska, Nolan Fritz, and Tyler Sell wrapped up the top five, and all finished on the lead lap. Fleety Beltz logged the fastest lap of the class with a 12:04, but had to play catch up after a 21 minute lap two, climbing from 18th place to seventh overall. Brad Holder led the Quad +30 class at the first checkpoint, with Timothy Storey, Dan Burkitt, Andre Topper, and Kim Muzzarelli all within ten seconds of the leader. Burkitt charged out front on lap two, followed by Topper and Kevin Johnson, while Holder slipped back to fourth. By the fourth lap, Burkitt and Holder were running one-two, and the chase was on. For the next five laps, they
traded the lead back and forth, never more than five seconds apart at the scoring tower. Burkitt logged the fastest lap of the race with a 9:08 on lap ten, which opened up his lead to seven seconds at the white flag. Holder gave it his all on the final lap, but came up one second short at the checkers. Johnson, Muzzarelli, Storey, and Topper completed the top six, and all finished ten laps. Jacob McCarren led the first three laps of the 65 Beginner class, chased by Mitch Edmeier, Tanner Whipple, Garrett Ward, and Eli Otterbach. Whipple was the new leader by lap four, but McCarren kept with Whipple for several more laps. Whipple slowly built up about a twenty second lead as he charged ahead to the checkers, completing thirteen laps for the win. McCarren finished second, followed by Ward and Otterbach, who all completed thirteen laps. Hunter Grampp caught Edmeier late in the race to finish fifth. The Schuhler brothers had a great day, with all three winning their class. Mason went wire-to-wire for the 65cc win. Riley led from start-to-finish in the 85cc class. And oldest brother Nolan topped the 86-200C class. In Supermini action, Nate Hornung was the early leader, chased by Joey Fortune, Jarred Hall, and Logan Kelly. On the second complete lap, Fortune hammered out a 5:52 to move into the lead, which would be the fastest lap of the race. Fortune charged ahead for the win, with Hornung and Hall rounding out the podium.

Area riders sweat it out at Loretta’s Hurricane Mills, TN - August 2010 By Bart Newman
H
ot, hotter and hottest were three words that resonated throughout the Loretta Lynn’s dude ranch all week long. The AMA Amateur National Championships are always full of great racing as well the heat, but this year it was way hot down there, and it played into many a championship battles. It didn’t slow down Jace Owen, who scored a huge National Championship win in the Super Mini 2 class, knocking down some heavy weights along the way. District 15 rider Broc Gourley also scored a National title in the 250C Modified class. Owen was a holeshot machine aboard his factory backed JMS built RM’s, and he didn’t let the great starts go to waste carding four podium moto finishes in six tries, including a pair of wins. With the likes of professional mini sensation Adam Cianciarulo, a blazing fast Gary Bailey trained American Honda rider Cooper Webb and a host of other top riders that was no easy task. In moto one Webb took the top spot

with Cianciarulo in tow as Dakota Alix and Owen were not far off the pace. That runnerup finish in moto one seemed to throw off Cianciarulo’s week as the always fast rider lost his consistently which is a much needed commodity at Loretta’s to win championships. A fourth in moto one had a reverse effect on Owen as it looked to make the #41 want it more. Two of the motos followed with some huge wins and his first of what could be many Loretta Lynn titles as he was mistake free, and on the gas in spite of the heavy pressure in both of the final two motos from Webb, Alix and Nick Gains. Jessie Wentland was quick all week in the Schoolboy 2 B/C class. Three finishes in the top five including a second in moto two would mean that the Elk River, Minnesota rider can run a large 2N on his Yamaha. Wentland was also a top ten ride in the 250B Modified class going 9-13-3 for a solid sixth. 50Jr. rider Gage Steburg and family made the trip from Fort Dodge, Iowa one day longer after a tight week of racing found the KTM pilot inside the top ten once all the scores were added up. A good jump and great ride in moto two anchored the week with a solid seventh leading to a National number #10N for the ever improving young speedster. It always seems that every year a kid shows up within a mini class with the coolest name of the week and 2010 was no different as Torsten Strom, who hails from Houlton, Wisconsin was this year’s peoples choice. However a cool name wasn’t all that Strom had going for him as he also possessed chops on a scooter and will always be known as 2010’s 5th fastest 51cc (4-6) Stock Multi Speed rider at Loretta Lynn’s after carding a 4-9-4 in his three motos at the ranch. Luke Parker had a tough first moto finishing sixteenth but an eight and seven in the next two races meant a National number #9N would be heading back to Juneau, Wisconsin with the Parker bunch. Kirsten Raemisch had an impressive showing in the Women’s Sr. class at the ranch placing her Yamaha deep within the top ten all week including a strong finish in the third and final moto. That had the Madison, Wisconsin rider on the podium thanking her mom and dad over the PA system, cumulating into a National #4 for the week’s efforts. Marshall Blythe of Carbondale, Illinois ended his Loretta Lynn’s adventure as National #5 as his speed built
throughout the week in the 51 (4-6) Stk Shaft Drv class. A twelfth in moto one was the only moto the young lad had outside of the top ten and that proved to be the key to his success as a seventh in moto two and a charge from the back to eightieth in moto three was the key to the week. District 15 rider Broc Gourley who hails from Boonville, Indiana brought home the title in the 250C Modified class with a total score of four, posting a runner up and a pair of wins on his way to the title over Colby Mullins and Cody Bristlin. In the 65 7-11 Modified class Chase Sexton was the lone yellow machine rider in a sea of orange. It didn’t stop the JMS backed Cobra rider for nailing down three top ten rides and a National #3 in a very tough mini class behind California’s Luke Purther and Michigan rider Joey Crown. In the 250A Pro Sport class it was bad luck for front runner Gavin Faith as the very fast and smooth Iowa rider carried a second and fourth into his final moto only to have bad luck strike. A never say die determination kept him pushing for the front, just missing the top ten with a hard fought

twelfth, ending the week as National #3 in one of the fast classes to run at the ranch. Vet fast guy Fred Nette placed inside the top ten of both the +40 and +45 classes for the second year in a row. The week started out strong for Nette in +45 as the Joliet, Illinois rider locked up a podium finish in the first moto. Nette wasn’t a huge fan of the track as he couldn’t find its flow as the week went on. Nette scored six motos inside the top ten in both classes but could find his way back to the podium finishing the week as #6 and #9 respectfully. Howard Jabaay got faster as the week went on, twisting the throttle harder with every passing moto. An eighth in the third +45 moto was just what the doctor ordered to lock up National #10 for the always friendly Crete, Illinois rider. Jeremy Martin’s stock had to rise as the Minnesota flyer went one-one in nearly back to back motos in the Schoolboy 2 and 250B Stock classes. Horrible first motos put Martin behind the eight ball in each and the close time frame and high heat didn’t help at all. What Martin did on that hot Thursday afternoon is what legends are made of. A poor start in each race had Martin turning some of the fastest laps of the week in any class to fight his way to the top of the podium in not one but two classes in less that a two hour span in 110 plus degree heat. There would be no national titles this year

for the youngest Martin boy, but he let the racing world know that #44 was on point, and conditioning nor desire was not a question. The weather was nearly as impressive as the racing at Loretta Lynn’s. I feel as though I type this year after year but it always fits, for almost 20 years this has been my motocross vacation destination. A great track, amazing racing, and more fun than I can put in to words. If you’re a MX racer, or just a fan, this is one week you don’t want to miss. arm conditions greeted racers at Riverside Raceway on the July 31 Aug. 1 weekend, but a good turnout and a perfectly prepared track allowed for great racing. Aztec, New Mexico's Killy Rusk rolled into the track on Sunday and showed why he has been quite successful this year on the national circuit. Rusk delivered wins in all of his motos in the Open A, 250A, and 14-24A classes on his KTM, and had sizeable leads as the checkered flag flew in every race. "I really like this track, it's deep and tacky," said Rusk."I'm making my way east to Unadilla, but spent the last week riding my bicycle on RAGBRAI, a great way to train. (RAGBRAI is sponsored by the Des Moines Register and consists of up to 15,000 bicyclists per day peddling across the state in one week.) I've been getting top 20's consistently in the nationals as a privateer and am hoping to turn some heads. I would like to thank Rusk Racing, Troy Lee Designs, Leo Vince, No Toil, and TCX boots for their support." Second place overall in both the Open A and 250A Sunday was Mason City, Iowa's Luke Peters. The Yamaha rider showed he is

in shape with good finishes in both classes. His 3-2 finishes in the Open A beat out Bobby Hanson's 2-5 for the runner-up spot. His 4-2 in 250A edged Blake Netten's 3-3 for runnerup in that class. Rounding out the top five in 250A were Bobby Hansen and Kody Pirie.
#20 Jacob Lawson and Benji Lorenz putting on a show in Quad A.
Open A top five were Rusk, Peters, Hanson, Josef DeBower, and Pirie. Peters scored perfect 1's in 250A and Open A on Saturday also. Luke has never been shy about competing in bigger races and the experience is paying off for him as he has moved himself to the front of the pack on the local scene. When it comes to the competitive 250B and Schoolboy classes, don't blink because the starting gate changes from week to week. There are always fast kids moving up to the big bikes and getting into the fray. There are a handful of top riders at Winterset that can win anytime, and rarely is an overall won with a back to back moto wins. Two of the more successful riders on this weekend were Mason Kerr and Cody Breeden. Kerr took the 250B class on Sunday with a 4-1 tally and his 2-1 grabbed the win in Schoolboy. Breeden raced to second in 250B and first in Schoolboy on Saturday and backed it up with a second in Schoolboy Sunday. Colton Hildreth and Spencer Chrismore are also players in these classes. Hildreth was first in 250B and second in Schoolboy on Saturday with a 4-1. Chrismore was consistent all weekend with a third in 250B and fourth in Schoolboy on Saturday. how hard you hit the face. As Wallace was checking out, Dylan Kobel settled nicely into second. Behind him Austin Hamburger, Austin Nelson and Derek Medearis were engaging in war. At the checkers, Wallace claimed victory over Kobel. Hamburger edged Medearis for third and Nelson rounded out the top five. 50Sr was a stacked class, and the main event was pretty exciting. #27 KTM mounted Luke Parker nailed the holeshot beating the others to turn one. He was able to run well on lap two and three with Eugene Wolff and Travis Anderson right behind. As the riders were hitting lap four, Anderson was putting a ton of pressure on Wolff which allowed them to close in on the leader. You just knew it was going to come down to the wire as these riders had those 50cc bikes flying. Parker got cross-rutted over the main spectator plateau and went down handing the lead to Wolff. Parker remounted in third behind Anderson. Justin Oehlhof took fourth and Aidan McCormick from nearby Colum-

bus rounded out the top five. The 250B class was also another race that was looking to come down to the wire. Robbie Hyson grabbed the holeshot but had his hands full trying to keep the pack behind him. Richard Tracy was riding the track well all night and managed to push his Yamaha past Hyson on lap two. Erik Utech then started to pressure Hyson for second and made his run past him on the spectator plateau. John Perry and Max McGilligan were racing hard as well behind the leaders. As the laps ran down, Utech kept trying to charge Tracy, running his bike on the rev limiter. At the checkers, it was Tracy followed by Utech, Hameister, Hyson and McGilligan. 250C was near the end of the night’s race order, but the best story of the night came from this class. In the LCQ, a pair of brothers were trying to make it into the main event. Brothers Taylon Pulley and Justin Goodwin were both in the LCQ after some bad luck in their heats. Three laps into the race, Justin

had a substantial lead and was headed for the main when he pulled over to check on Taylon who was involved in a crash the previous lap, thereby ending his chance to make the main. This is what makes our sport the best. Usually a story of this nature never gets published but I think it is just as worthy of mention as the person who won. Like event promoter Chris Halverson said, “it is worth it to put on these events especially when something cool like this happens. Back in the day, if he would have crashed his brother would have used him as a berm.” So all ended well even though neither riders made the main. In the main, it was Dylan Denruiter who took the checkers. Trevor Orr and Mike Suter rounded out the top three. Martin Returns to Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - August 8 By Rolfe Otterness
A
lex Martin’s home is about 200 feet from the Spring Creek track, but he has been absent these many months as he is off contesting the nationals. Finally he got to make one of his home track races, and he showed why he’s in contention for top privateer in his national class, as he ran off with six straight wins today, topping the 14-24A, 250A and Open A classes. Alex and the other riders had to deal with a one-lined track in moto one as rain on Saturday night left soggy conditions, but at least the ace track crew managed to salvage the day with some quick dozer work. The track shaped up pretty well by the end of the first set of motos, and was actually puffing up dust by the end of the day. The total entries were down to 319 for the day with the rain scaring off a bunch of riders. Jesse Kangas came flying into turn one to grab the Feine Tune Pro Action holeshot money in moto one of 250A. Martin was close behind and went for the kill as they hit the sand whoop section. Martin started to edge away while Kangas maintained a solid pace to hang on for second. Luke Peters was moving up and passed Lance Gassert on lap three to take over third. Joe Perron and Nick Jackson followed in short succession and the top five was set for that moto.
The 65 7-11 class win went to Brandon Moore.
34
CYCLE USA, September 2010
Bailey Kroone ran 1-2 for a second in 65cc 7-11.
Kangas once again commanded the start as moto two was dropped. Martin wasted little time in establishing himself as the leader, zipping by Kangas. The real duel in this moto was the battle between Perron and Jackson
who hammered away at each other for most of the distance. As the checkered brought a conclusion to the race, Martin led convincingly over Kangas, Perron got the better of Jackson for third and Dustin Harguth brought his bike in for fifth. Cory Breeden jumped out to the early lead as the 125 Two Strokes were released into freedom, like caged bumblebees! Brenton Barghahn established a hold on second with Brady Rhode pressuring in third. The top three ran very close for the first few laps before Rhode made a charge on the downhill to move into second. In another lap he was on Breeden’s tail and made the pass for the lead just after the uphill triple. From there he led the remaining half lap to take the moto win a couple seconds ahead of Breeden. Barghahn tallied a third with Blake Roskovich and Paul Gerke snaring the 4-5 positions. Rhode led the fray as the smokers were let loose for moto two. Breeden and Barghahn dropped in behind early in the race, but Rhode had the mojo, pulling away from them over the duration. This continued to the black and white with fourth and fifth going to Lucas Hegna and Gerke. The kids on their 65’s are quite impressive nowadays, and Bailey Kroone has been one of the top runners this summer. He buzzed into turn one to lead the pack of 7-11 year-old riders, and looked strong - running out front all the way in moto one. Brandon Moore settled into second from the outset, but
couldn’t match Kroone’s pace, and little by little lost contact with the leader. A good moto for Kroone with a good margin at the flag followed in by Moore, Austin Griffin, Dalton Hein and Brandon Klym. Moore must have been cruising in moto one, but he stormed out in the next race, taking the holeshot over his rivals. He led all the way to the finish with Kroone having to accept the runner-up position this time around. Griffin ran another good moto for third with Klym improving to fourth, and Hein tracking in for fifth. Concentrating one’s spectating a little further up the age scale you might focus on the scintillating talents to be found in the 14-24B class. In moto one Derek Hullett snared a nice holeshot and led for the first couple laps with Jake Burbach pressuring him, with William Doane lurking in third. Burbach finally got by near the midpoint of the moto but briefly dropped or stalled in one corner to let Hullet regain the lead. Burbach recovered quickly, but his comeback charge left him short at the flag. Doane maintained third to the end over Jeremy Dewall and Christian Unger. Cole Ludowese hammered the start to lead into turn one of the next moto, but was immediately pressured by Hullett and Burbach. Burbach took charge on the second lap, getting by both riders and going on to take a solid win. Hullett sailed in for second with Doane once again third. Unger and Ludowese finagled themselves some fine 4-5 finishes at the flag. Schumann, Peters fast at Pleasure Riders Cayuga, Indiana - July 24/25 By Bud Northrup Photos by Gordon Green

anny Schumann and Matt Peters waged a Fast Time war at the Pleasure Riders hill climb near Cayuga, with Schumann coming out on top. Schumann posted the first round fast time at 4.143 seconds in the 600cc class, but Peters carded a 4.112 time in the 250cc class on his second ride on his CR250. That time held up until the 600cc class rode it’s second round. Schumann flew his KX500 high over the top of the 155 foot hill in a sizzling 4.035 seconds to take that class win, and the overall fast time of the day. Schumann had the first, third and fourth fastest times of the day, while Peters had the second and fifth. Schumann was the only double class winner of the evening. Schumann and Peters waged interesting class wars as they rode against each other three times. In the 250cc class, Schumann placed third behind Peters and Caleb Emory. Emory turned in the first round leading time of 4.210 seconds, but crashed on his second ride. In the 450cc class, Schumann took the first round lead on his KTM380, but Peters flew his KTM over in 4.176 seconds for the lead. Schumann responded with an even quicker 4.138 second ride to claim the win. Bobby Senn claimed the third spot on his CRF450. Schumann’s 4.143 second time in the 600cc class on his first ride would have held up for that class win, but not the overall fast time, as Peters still had that 4.112 second run in the 250cc class. So he twisted the throttle just a bit tighter, and set a new fast time which would hold up the rest of the night. Troy Camerer was second in 4.308 seconds with Dylan Brady close behind him in 4.316 seconds. In youth class action, National Champion Levi Peters took the 50cc class win with a 6.200 second run on his KTM, with Cline Garriott second in 6.385 seconds. Clint Garriott was the best in the 65cc class with a 5.780 second run with ‘Little Fast Andy’ Fortner second. Cole Garriott posted a 5.282 second time to win the 85Jr class, which was also the Youth Fast Time of the night. Reece Hutton claimed second with a very good 5.452 second time. Matt Gocken was the fastest in the 85Sr class with a 5.506 second time as Austin Shelton claimed second. The Gocken family had a good evening, as Matt’s big brother, John Michael, took first 36

place in the 600cc Four Stroke class, second in Open Stock and fourth in the 450cc class on his stock length Honda. The Garriott family also had a good evening as Ryan and Wade claimed first and second in the two stroke Quad class to go with the boys youth class finishes. The Sunday half of the weekend saw Matt Peters still contending for the Fast Time, but this time against Bobby Senn as his chief opponent. Riding on a muddy, slick hill, Peters set the first round fast time at 4.488 seconds on his KX500 in the 600cc class. In the second round the hill had become tacky and much faster. Danny Schumann lowered the fast time with a 4.487 second run in the 250cc class, then Joe McGurer lowered it a tad more to 4.484 seconds. Peters was up to their challenges, and sailed his CR250 over the top in 4.289 seconds to take the class win and set a new Fast Time. In the 450cc class, Bobby Senn entered the fray, flying his Honda thumper over in
4.182 seconds to take that class lead, and set a new Fast Time. But Peters was up to the Senn challenge also, and posted a new fast time of 4.160 seconds on his KTM380 for his second class win. Schumann claimed third. The fun continued in the 600cc class where Senn was the first rider in the second round, and sailed his Honda over the top in 4.138 seconds. Peters responded yet again, blitzing the hill in 4.077 seconds to take the class win, set the overall fast time of the day, and claim yet another perfect day with three class wins and the Fast Time Award. Schumann again claimed third. Senn had one more shot on his CRF450 in the 600cc Four Stroke class, ad delivered a good 4.262 second time to add a win to his two second place efforts. Lakota ‘Shay’ Ashworth was a double class winner. She shocked the guys in the 200cc class with a 5.027 second time on her vintage KDX200 in the second round to overtake Kyle Galloway and Chris Senn for the win. Senn was second on his KTM in 5.127 seconds with Galloway close behind him with a 5.129 effort. Shay’s second win came in the Women’s class, where her first round 5.214 second run on her Kawasaki held up for the win. Missy Dowers was second in 5.776 seconds with Becky Lawson third. In youth class action, Levi Peters claimed the 50cc class win with a 5.830 second time. Clint Garriot was the 65cc class winner while Cole Garriott was the fast guy in the 85Jr class with a 5.444 second run, with Reece Hutton second. Garriott’s time was also the Youth Fast Time of the day - his second such award in two days. Austin Shelton was also a double class winner as he took both the 85Sr win in youth competition as well as the 125cc class win. His 5.176 second first round leading ride was beaten by Joe McGurer with a 5.032 second run in the second round, but Austin delivered a 4.968 second run on his second ride to claim the win. Missy Dowers was third. Dad had no idea that I was there but I'll tell you one thing he definitely takes up the whole trail and is hard to pass." But the son actually finished just a few spots ahead of his dad on adjusted time as they started on different rows with finishing within seconds of each other.

he Hoosier Trail Riders hosted the first of three rounds of the Indiana State Hare Scrambles at Midway MX. Midway use to host motocross races dating way back to 1973 up until 2003 when Hare Scramble racing replaced motocross at the facility. The weather leading up to the race made conditions decent in the woods, but still a bit dusty in the open sections. The morning races got underway with the Pee Wee's hitting the trails first with Colton Beavers and Lance Maschino winning the mix and injector classes. Next up were the Super Minis with the 65 and 85cc machines, and they would for the first time at Midway have the option of going over the big drainage pipes, creating a few good endos. Zachary Dubois led the first lap of the Super Minis just ahead of Blake Rinsch with Colton Pifer chasing in third. Dubois took the win ahead of Pifer while Rinsch only completed one lap after seizing his KTM. In the 85cc class Keagen Lee battled with Austin Lee right to the finish as they both went over the final obstacle being the drainage pipes before the finish with Keagen taking the win, and Mike Witkowski in third after getting sick on the final lap. Vincent Smith took the win in the 65cc class ahead of Dawson Dunnuck, both completing three laps. A shotgun start got things going for the big bikes after a brief riders meeting and the National Anthem. The front row consisted of a couple former winners at Midway, as well as a few new fast riders who were all hoping to beat each other to a short left hander with some switchbacks thru the tall grass and over some telephone poles, the drainage pipes, tall earthmover tires and then eventually into the

Action hot as ever at Megacross Mendota, Illinois - August 7 By Jennifer Kenyon Photos by Brett Wilkinson
A
fter a week of heavy rain, Mother Nature took the night off as round nine of the Megacross Shootout Series got underway in Mendota, Illinois. Rather than diligently removing water from the track like usual, Wardy and the crew actually brought out the water hose for this one. Post watering, the track was a bit on the muddy side during practice, but began to shape up as motos came around. One of the most entertaining races of the night came in the 50cc (4-8) class. These little guys and gals are on the smallest bikes out there, but they aren’t afraid of anything. Micah Alleman grabbed the holeshot on his KTM in front of moto one winner Travis Wilkinson. Wilkinson didn’t wait long before slipping by on the inside of Alleman, taking over the first place spot. Wilkinson was pulling away, but must have seen the flag wrong as he pulled off the track on the white flag, moving Alleman back into first. Wilkin-

son quickly realized he had another lap and chased down Alleman. In the last corner before the finish, Wilkinson bolted past to reclaim his victory. Kevin Huddleston, Joshua Tanner and Tyrell Lesley all put in a great effort throughout the moto finishing out in the top five. Ross Martin captured the Open A holeshot aboard his Venning Motorsports Honda over Ryan Poulter, Scott Zont, Kevin Markwardt and Johnathan Six. Poulter settled in behind Zont in third with Markwardt right on his tail. Poulter buckled under Markwardt’s pressure, going down in the slick corner, allowing Markwardt to move into the third spot. Martin put a pretty big gap on the TZR Honda of Zont with Markwardt charging hard into the sweeper corner. Markwardt went inside Zont attempting the pass, but instead lost control in the slippery corner and went down. Zont cruised on to keep his second position. Kyle Corman and Poulter took advantage of the Markwardt crash, moving into third and fourth. Markwardt quickly got back up and charged after Poulter, but Poulter held him off for fourth behind Martin, Zont,
and Corman. In the 250A class, Poulter captured the holeshot followed by Zont, Martin and Six. Martin and Six collided in the second corner, removing Six from the rest of the moto and sending Martin to the back of the pack, an unfamiliar place for him. Poulter cruised on to take the victory with Zont putting in a solid second place ride. Kyle Corman found himself in a good place after the Martin/Six crash, finishing third with Martin making his way to fourth. Justin Kelly rounded out the top five. In the Quad B class, Devin Krontz got off to a great start aboard his Yamaha, followed by Charles Torres and Jim Oakes. Torres didn’t let Krontz out of his sights as he closed in hard in the corners, showing Krontz his tire. Oakes, Kelby Inskeep and Shawn Long were dicing back and forth for third. Long made the pass on Oakes and Inskeep, setting his sights on second place Torres. Coming into the last S corner before the finish, Krontz, Torres and Long were rubbing plastics as all three riders were in the corner at the same time. Krontz held off the others claiming the victory, with Torres holding his second spot. Ben Koehler rode a consistent race to take the fourth spot with Inskeep claiming the fifth spot. The Pit Bike enthusiasts have the chance to show their skills at every other round of the Megacross Shootout Series and tonight was their night to shine. Adam Petnuch got off to a great start on his Honda with Cory Licastro, Ernie Bruhn and JT Fox hot on his tail. Petnuch carried the momentum and finished out the race with a victory, with Licastro coming in second, close behind. Bruhn and Fox diced it out for the third spot, which Bruhn captured. Hill City National Hare Scrambles
Jeff Colbert finished fifth in Pro/AA.
Hill City, Minnesota - August 8 By Mike Pohl
R
ound six of the National East Coast Hare Scrambles Series stopped at Quadna Mountain Park, located in Hill City, Minnesota. The Range Riders motorcycle club organized this event. Being a former ski area, the location offers many amenities not seen at your typical Hare Scrambles. Like a chalet, for starters. Nice camping only a stone’s throw away, and this year, professional riders we normally only see in the magazines. Paul Whibley, Nick Fahringer and Jason Greer represented the pros, and here to make

them earn their money were all the usual suspects from D23. Specifcally, Dylan Debel, Matt Stavish, Nate Ferder and Jeff Colbert. Here’s a recap of the event from Range Rider Dean Bertram: “A dust quenching rain shower moved through the area late Saturday evening and made conditions slick for the noon start of the race. As the flag waved the pro and AA line sped up and back down the former bunny hill to a tight left hand corner. Jason Greer got the holeshot with Paul Whibley slotting in behind him. Several miles later the leaders blasted out of the woods,
rounded a corner and shot up an old ski run. It was Whibley in the lead with Greer a few seconds back. Behind them Fahringer had his hands full with a host of local talent. About halfway through the lap the leaders explode down a hill and snake through the scoring area before making a long climb up another ski run. Whibley sat first with a twelve second lead over Fahringer who in turn had six seconds over Greer. The local talent begins a few seconds later in the way of young gun Ferderer. After the second lap Whibley had over a minute lead on Fahringer and things were looking good for the Yamaha rider. Another minute back a battle was brewing as Ferderer was only five seconds adrift from Greer. Ferderer snuck past Greer
AA rider Andrew Goldammer in one of the tight sections.
and completes lap three. In front of them the race has changed completely as Whibley is out just after the scoring tent with a mechanical and won’t finish the race. Fahringer inherits the lead and stretched it out to five minutes by the end. On the fourth lap Greer passed Ferderer back to hold on for second to the end. Husaberg rider Dyan Debel finished in fourth as Jeff Colbert rounded out the top five. After the race Whibley said he liked the course and that it had a good variety of conditions from tight single track to faster two track. Greer echoed those words adding that the layout coming in and out of the start area was great for the mechanics to keep him updated and that he appreciated the large amount of single track that the club had cut in.
Our local talent demonstrated a very respectable showing amid the best riders in the country. We should be proud to share the trails with these guys. eather played an important role in the AMA District 23 short track races held at the Isanti County Fairgrounds as a short rain shower coated the dryslick race track after the heats. However, with the efforts put forth by Robert Anderson and crew the new racing surface became tacky and very fast. Long time dirt track racer Mike Schmidt ended a lengthy winless drought by recording a hard earned victory in the 600 Vintage class. Schmidt took advantage of the new found conditions and nailed the holeshot at start of the main event. Heat race winner Curtis Lofgren along with Dave Darsow and the rest of the field gave chase. Lofgren repeatedly looked to the outside of Schmidt proving there was plenty of passing room on the now tacky track, but a bobble in turn two gave Schmidt the breathing room he needed to seal the deal. “I put my lucky tire on today,” explained Schmidt afterwards. “The last time I had that tire on I won. That was five years ago!” The 450 Semi Pro class saw a familiar face in the winner’s circle when National #68 Josh Koch slid his Jeff’s SOS/ Anderson Plumbing/ General Engineering backed Honda by the Go-Moto sponsored race leader Nick Mataya with two laps to go. Former 2009 Ice Racing World Champion Kevin Anderson finished third ahead of a talent laden field that should have included his girlfriend Lindsey King. King took the rest of the evening off after suffering a horrifying heat race crash, that saw the speedy Pro-Singles rider from California hit the turn four wall head-on after colliding with a fallen rider. “I don’t remember what exactly happened,” explained King afterwards. “Someone fell in front of me and I didn’t have anywhere to go. I’m sure I’ll be sore for a while though.” The Open Semi-Pro final saw yet another frightening incident when race leader Anderson and Koch tangled while speeding down the front straight mid-race. Koch clipped Anderson’s rear tire and was sent tumbling after hitting the concrete wall. Amazingly Koch (with a little assistance) clambered to his feet. He then decided to take the rest of the night off while complaining of light headedness and sporting some nasty looking road rash on his shoulder. “I thought I had enough room to move to the outside of Kevin,” Koch later explained. “I hope I have my big crash of the season out of the way now!” Anderson recounted the inci44 CYCLE USA, September 2010
dent also,” Josh was to the inside of me through turns three and four, so I moved wide to square the corner off hoping to put in a solid lap to pass him back, but I think he had the same idea.” After the single file restart, the Diesel Minnesota/ EME Inc./ Goodwin Racing/ Larson’s Cycle / Durelle Racing Products sponsored Kevin Anderson quickly checked out for the win. Mataya passed Kevin’s younger brother Conner Anderson late in the race to finish second. Zack Zemanovic finished fourth while Dustin Paul placed fifth in his first ever appearance in the Pro division. In other racing action, the father/ son team of Verdeen and Cale Langland notched victories in each of their respective classes. Mason Grecula pulled double duty by winning the 50Sr and Jr classes in convincing manner. Quad riders excite at MotoCity Staples, Minnesota - July 25 By Sally Anderson

he chase for the cup once again was on the mind of many of the quad riders today as race three of five was held at Motocity Raceway. With only two races left, the riders could only hope that their bodies and quads would hold up through the motos today and give them the points they needed to stay in the running for the cup. Many give-a-ways were handed out during the riders meeting to kick the day off right. As the races got underway with the 90 Modified riders Noah Mickelson started with the holeshot win leaving his older brother Haedyn Mickelson falling in behind. Noah was flawless through the whoop sections, aired out each of the table tops and swept the corners as fast as he could in attempt to hold off Haedyn. It was in the last lap that Haedyn was able to get around Noah and take first place away. Moto two proved differently as rider Ryan Trout, who had motor problems in the first moto won the holeshot ahead of Noah and Haedyn Mickelson. Noah was able to eventually get by Trout after a long battle. Noah successfully won the podium position for the day with Haedyn winning second and Trout third. The Quad Women’s class was won by
90 Mod riders going through the first corner.
Haylie Benson who clinched first place in both motos with Crystal Wilson following in second and Allyson Westfield third. This is a great class to watch as it is anyone’s guess at this point who will win the series. Open B & C were a double drop, and the competition was so intense at times it was hard to decipher which riders were in each class. The podium win went to Brandon Herheim in Open B and Tanner Hollantz in Open C. Great racing boys!
Open A riders Mike Barnhart and Nick Waxon (117).
Production 450C riders had the spectators on the edge of their seats as the riders were constantly switching positions. In moto one, Jt Sleyster worked his way up and was able to hold on and take first place away from Mcgowan. Nick Waldbillig, Wade Reinke, Justin Hammann and Cory Klocek had their own great race and finished in the same order. In moto two, Jt Sleyster was on a mission to continue his lead and win for the day. However, Mcgowan had his own plan of taking the win. With side by side racing at times, it was Mcgowan that took moto to also take the podium win overall. Perfect vintage mx weekend Walnut, Illinois - Aug 7/8 By Chuck Doose Photos by Missi Thede
T
he two day Midwest Vintage Motocross race at Sunset Ridge in Walnut, IL was held on August 7th and 8th. If you could only make one Midwest Vintage MX event a year this would have had to have been it. The Pistole family goes all out to help everyone have a great time racing, eating, and BSing. If you’ve ridden at Sunset Ridge, you know that Bob preps the main track as well as anyone, but if you’ve never raced with MWVMX, you might not have ridden the grass track on the north side of the main track. Saturday we raced on a newly designed grass track which the Erskine brothers helped set up. This is an old school MX track with tight turns, some sand, and a few jumps thrown in to make it interesting. The start used the hand-on-head method rather than a bungee or modern start gate, so starts were interesting. Judicious throttle control was the name of the game on most of the turns. A long straight section allowed those with enough cahoonas to get into fifth gear. Heavy breaking at the end of the long straight was needed to negotiate a couple large mounds with turns at the top. Not bad on a modern bike, but it was interesting trying to slow down on a Bultaco! A few turns after the mounds was the infamous sandy down/ up turn which proved to be quite a challenge to all but the best riders. The weather was hot, but Missi Thede spent all day shooting great photos of us old farts. You can order photos from Missi at thedephotography.com We had 128 entries on Saturday. Dave Zigmont came back all the way from Georgia to race three classes and placed first in all. Paul Jensen took first in Vintage Heavyweight A in front of Craig Maasdam and Shane Klimek. Con Erskine came in first overall in a field of seven riders in Vintage Heavyweight B. It was great to see Gary Lingbeck back racing again; he 46
CYCLE USA, September 2010
took first in Vintage 50+ B on one of his many Kawis. The single biggest class of the day was Modern 50+ B; Scott Lindahl took first with Lonnie Netzel in second. Iron man Bob Zacks rode three Vintage classes plus the no BS Grand National class. He even had his wife and the new baby at the track. After the racing Jan and company prepared a feast including brats, pulled pork, corn on the cob and all the trimmings. Everyone had their fill and still had room for ice cream. Sunday dawned cool, overcast, dry and provided the perfect race weather for the main track. Bob had the track groomed better than ever. The vintage bikes bypassed the back tables and double, while the modern riders enjoyed the entire track. The beauty of the Walnut track is that all the jumps are safe and riders can choose how much air-time they want. For me that’s not much, but the kids can air it out if they want. After quite a long hiatus the Horn’s, Chris and Sonny, along with Mark Stoudt made it just in time for racing on Sunday. Mark and Chris swapped first and second in Evo/Rev +50A. It’s always fun watching those guys race. Craig Hayes took first over Clint Landis who I believe had a bike problem in moto 1, but came back to win the Grand National race. 12/16 Schoolboy had six
racers with Philip Anderson, Mark Doose, and Jarrett Winder coming in first to third. Becky Hayes and Cymantha Corey duked it out over first and second in the Women’s class, with Becky getting the overall. The rain held off until the last race of the day, but I was still able to see without tearoffs. I’d like to thank all the racers for coming out and a big thank you goes out to the Pistole family and crew. Things went like clockwork with signup, starts, flaggers and everyone. Thanks also to our sponsors: Sunrise Chevrolet, Keytime Motosports, Metal Medics, Duffy’s Collectable Cars and Fly Racing. You all made it the perfect weekend for racing for me. Motosports Park - Backwards Byron Illinois - August 21
I
t takes a lot of work to reverse the direction of a track, at least to do it right. Every jump, landing, and corner needs to be re-worked. Aaron Vincer, with the help of Brad Jerominski and friends from Club 57 took on the task the week before this weekend’s double header, and they did a great job. To the riders, there’s nothing better than showing up at your regular track, and finding something new... now make that an entirely new layout and you’ve really got something to look forward to. We caught up with the racing action on Saturday, day one of the weekend of Barone Spinal Care Nuclear Series racing action. It was a perfect day for racing, and as always, both tracks were well prepped, and ready to go. First gate drop of the day on the Legacy track was for the 14-24 class, and right from the start it was all James Garrett on his Kawasaki. The speedy A class rider got to the front, and then held his own to lead every lap. In the second moto, it was more of the same as he was leading by the end of the first lap for a clean sweep of both motos ahead of Wisconsin’s Steven Ceithamer and Mitch Britt, both on Yamaha’s. Pro Action/ SF Performance/ Decal Works backed Garrett, “I like the track ran in reverse even more than forward. Everything flows really well, and it is great riding on something all different. The wood chips that were added started off being a little slick, but they are working in. I like the series and am running all the events trying to get some of the yearend payout.” Thomas Conroy was just as dominating in the +30B/C class as he had a good lead at the end of the first lap in moto one. Behind him, Randy Julseth was riding really well in second, and under constant pressure from Nuke Series regular Jeremy Barone. Lap after lap Barone pushed and looked for a way to get by Julseth without any success... that was until the last lap when he slipped by and into second.
Some of the youth class riders with their awards from racing on the Hill track.
William Anderson moved up to fourth early in the moto and held the spot until the end, just ahead of Iowa’s Todd Marquette. In the second moto, things were a little closer all the way through for the top three. Conroy was leading again, but he never could get a safe margin over the repeat battle of Julseth fending off Barone. On the last lap, Barone again made his pass into second, and stayed on the rear fender of Conroy to the end. Anderson finished fourth again. The 85Sr class had Kawasaki’s running in the top three spots in both motos, with Richmond, IL’s fast guy
Mike Hilgart went 1-3 for second overall in Quad B.
Alexander Nagy making it look almost easy. As fast as the other riders are in this class, Nagy just has a little more all around the track and it adds up to a lot of wins for the upcoming star. As Nagy led the way to win in both motos, Jordan Mackiewicz ran ahead of Jason Mack for second and third. Fourth in both

Jarred Berggren grand fashion, but had to work for it in the charged in for second on his Suzuki ahead of second moto. Ricki Williams finished second Gage Pace, Robert Copenharve, and Austin Gunnel. Pace had a great start in the second moto and led part of the opening lap. Robert Copenharve also rode in the 65Jr class, taking the first moto holeshot ahead of Lucas Filips and Jimmy Weber. Copenharve started to open a little lead by the end of the second lap and went on for the win as Filips and Weber stayed close all moto for second and third. The second moto was a near repeat as the top three finished in the same order. Nick Swanson went 5-5 for fourth overall on his LEM. Brandon Nordmeyer rode his KTM to lead every lap in the first 250C moto. Conner Robinson kept him in sights early, but then slid back a ways as Nordmeyer seemed to pick up the pace at the Jarred Berggren going to second overall in 85Jr. half-way point. Jeremy Barone chased Robinson in the final couple laps, finishing third ahead of Cody Gunnel who worked up after starting in seventh. Nordmeyer led off the start again in moto two as Kyle Anderson, Robinson, Lucas Hayes and Gunnel kept it very #37 Kyle Anderson and #614 (partially hidden) close through the Brandon Nordmeyer lead part of the 250C class into the first turn opening two laps. Catalani fell back to the back of the pack in the back section, and Pope took full advantage gapping the class by a ten seconds. Mason Flatness and Steven Ceithamer ran hard against each other finishing 2-3 ahead of “Miss Arenacross” Lindsey Scheltema. Scheltema later in the day, “I really enjoyed the original track and have always enjoyed coming here, and today was fun with it being all different. I haven’t been here for a long time and it was good getting out and getting some practice in. I race the Women’s professional events so I have some of those nationals coming up. I moved closer to the area (from MI) to work with the Arenacross Series for my third year, so I’m excited about that. To be on the other side of the sport on the event co-ordinating end of things is awesome. I’m hoping to ride at a few more events around here yet this season, and hopefully get back here at least once again.” In the second 250B moto it was all Pope after he grabbed the holeshot ahead of Catalani, Flatness, and Ceithamer. They ran in that order to the finish. Catalani bounced back to win the first Open B moto ahead of Pope. Then in moto two, Pope got out front and took the win ahead of Catalani after a great battle to lock in his second overall of the day. Pope’s Performance/ EVS/ Amsoil/ Pro Action backed Pope after the final moto, “I fell the first moto in Open B and got back into second. I went 1-1 in 250B and with this win I got both overalls. This was fun here today and reversed just switches thing up. I’m trying to win that week at Millsaps (a week of training for winning the B class in the Series) and need to catch up in points after missing some racing.” ID Engineering/ MSR/ One Industries/ Weisner Suspension/ No Toil supported Nicholas Vaughn out of Michigan continued his dominance of the 2010 Nuclear Series by winning both motos of the Open A and +25 classes. Vaughn is well on his way to taking home the huge payout at the end of the series as he has won every moto he’s started here so far this season. In the Open A class, Scott Zont finished sec-
ond in both motos. James Garrett went 3-4 for third overall ahead of Jason Kloptowsky (5-3). Zont won the 250A class. oung Mitch Koester had quite a day for himself winning the big hardware for all three of the classes he raced in at Hurricane Hills MX Park near Mazeppa, Minnesota. Koester is relatively new to the motocross scene, but at 14 years old he is already an accomplished Hill Climber with multiple district championships to his credit, and is the current national champion in the 750cc class. He is working hard in the motocross side of things, and is already starting to build a reputation breaking into the top ten for the district in two classes. With performances like this weekend he’ll find himself advancing into the B classes soon. Koester had to play some catch up to get his wins. Jake Andrist took the holeshot in the 14-24C first moto and held Koester off for the early win. In the Open C first moto Kyle Meier got the drop on Andrist and Koester out of the gate and held them off for a lap, but both managed to find their way around with Andrist taking his second early win. When they dropped the gates for the first 250C moto Andrist got out front again and managed to hold on for his third win by the end of the first motos.

Sitting a solid second in all three of his classes after the first motos, Koester dug deep and let it all hang out for the second motos. He jumped out to early leads in the 14-24 and Open C classes with Andrist right on him, forcing Koester to run flawless races to hang on for the wins. Andrist bobbled on his first lap in the second 250C moto, falling to the back of the pack, giving Koester a slight break. Koester still had his hands full holding off Blake Dixon to get his final win. Young Dillon Nelson surprised fans by doubling up the jumps just past the exit gate on his little KTM in the 50cc Injected class during the second motos. That was his first time to double that particular jump, a new skill that helped him get wins in both the Injected and multi-speed classes. Pierce Knight took his opening holeshot and dominated the day in the 65cc 7-9 and 65cc 7-11 classes taking both motos in each class. Ben Adamson was equally dominant in the 85cc classes taking the holeshots and seriously outriding his competition to double up as well. In other competition, Jacqueline Riess swept the Girls 9-13 and Women’s classes. Some nice runs were put up by Ryan Smoulch

he Paul Bunyan Forest Riders staged a 50 mile enduro on the trails on the east side of Highway 64 (Akeley West Enduro runs earlier in the season, on the west side of 64). For the first time this season, the temps were actually, well, comfortable. Enduro veteran’s Joe Berscheid, Max Bradly and Brett Grossman ran the show on the ground, and it turned into a real nail-biter at the end. Bradley oversaw the effort to bring in more than 7 miles of new single track. The wide variety of the trails made it a great ride through the woods. Existing single track gave way to more open two-track which then dumped riders into tight technical sections with rocky hills and elevation changes. In a way, Akeley East feels almost like a combination of all the other D-23 enduros rolled into one. The tighter sections with challenging rocky terrain reminded of Stone Lake. There

was one very challenging hill which the trail swept around in arc and was littered with hundreds of boulders. It really tested riders rock climbing techniques. Several sections flowed much like Huntersville’s zoomier sections. The really tight flowing stuff felt like Mora. But pretty much unique to Akeley East are the “in-outs”. Here logs are dropped across fast sections to break up the speed by routing riders off fast two-track and into the woods, much like a chicane does on a road racing course. This year the new “in-outs” were a little longer, and not quite as tight, making them flow better so riders could keep up a better rhythm. Women’s rider Mary Schreiner finished the race, which is accomplishment enough, but she did so riding much of the day with a separated shoulder. A violent encounter with a tree was the cause of this misfortune. Mary’s younger brother Mark, riding a few minutes back, stopped and just as violently yanked his sister’s shoulder back into place (every younger brother’s dream!) Apparently this a routine family activity of the Schreiner’s. Their father, Dave Schreiner, has separated
his shoulder Godknows how many times over the years. A couple years back, the senior Schreiner literally took out an entire (big) tree, separating his shoulder in the process. The sight of such carnage so shook the rider who witnessed the event that he could not concentrate for the rest of the race. Schreiner, meanwhile, got back on his bike and finished the race. Ho hum. Ain’t nobody tougher than an enduro rider. The overall trophy was decided by one second. One second, out of a four and a half hour race! It’s been a long time since the margin has been that

Hangtime MX gets new layout Akron, Indiana - July 31 By Lori Locklin
T
he Reads Racing crew was hard at work leading up to the July 31st weekend at Hangtime MX. The track now runs in the opposite direction it has been for the last year. The 110 foot tabletop is restored to it's original design. The track has undergone many changes in the past few years as Reads Racing likes to keep the layout fresh so riders frequently get to ride something new and fun. Right now riders are really digging the new layout. Mikey and Larry Klinger say they got a lot of positive feedback and will keep the layout primarily the same through the state championship over Labor Day Weekend. Friday July 30th had an open ride session and the track was absolutely perfect. With rain in the forecast the track crew roll packed in the track to prepare for rain. The rain started at five-thirty Saturday morning and continued until almost ten, the time for practice to start. By mid-day the sun came out, and the track tacked up. Mikey Klinger, "fun and racing is the goal and this weekend we succeeded. The riders and families are the greatest here in the Midwest. Everyone knows we get rain from time to time, but we always do our best to give our riders a place to ride, play, and just have fun." Saturday Morning Levi Johnson #404 swept Schoolboy 1 & 2 with the overall in both classes. Dalton Packard came in a close second to Levi in the Schoolboy 1. Skyler Ringen in the 250C class took the number one spot both motos for the overall. Following Ringen were Greg Nicolini, Tyler Powers and Zach Canrad battling it out for second. Ultimately Nicolini secured the runner-up position. Reads Racing webmaster Bobby Elkins has begun choosing a rider of the week once again. The rider is picked based on their attitude and determination. Rider of the Week videos can be viewed at dreyercycle.com under Reads Racing Media. The Rider of the week for the weekend of July 31 was William Allen Kirkpatrick. William, who goes by his middle name Allen, is a great rider, very talented and fun to be around. Allen took the win in the +40 class on Saturday. Reads Racing holds a drawing every Monday morning for the Pick of the Week. The winner receives a free race entry. All you have to do to win is ride. Riding paid off for Jacob Clingaman in the Mini Quad division. Jacob hit all three races over the weekend and his name was pulled as the winner. Congratulations Jacob, not only on the free entry but on the great racing over the weekend. Jacob 56

swept the Mini Quad division with three first place finishes over the weekend. Saturday night more riders came out to ride under the lights. The entire Hangtime track is now lit, and riders can fly over the 110 foot tabletop under the lights! Undoubtedly one of the best races of the night was between Allison Vrba #53 and Austin May #872 in the 14-24 class. Vrba got the holeshot over May in the first moto but May never let off and it was a battle to the finish, with Vrba taking the win in the first moto. In moto two May came out of the gate ahead of Vrba. Vrba stayed close to May chasing him to the finish line, but wasn't able to pull off the pass. May walked away with the second moto win, giving him the overall. Sunday was a great day. The track was in great shape and the weather was perfect! The most exciting race of the day was in the Supermini class between Evan Denney and Nick Fleckner. Lena’s two-day NITRO Trials Lena, Illinois - July 31/Aug 1 By Kathy Haselton
N
estled between Freeport and Galena, the rolling hills near Lena, IL was the setting for a challenging two day trials for the riders of Nitro. Landowner and rider Gary Lingbeck welcomed over 60 riders over the weekend to ride the challenging terrain of his property. The loop itself was expansive as it traversed through woodlands, hills, over logs, and had several creek crossings. The ride through the loop proved to be good practice leading up to each of the sections. The riders were treated to beautiful scenery as they traveled from section to section. Saturday began with a storm, dumping more rain on the
already saturated ground. A week prior to the trials, Lena saw nearly a foot of rain fall. Because of the recent wet weather, the sections were quite slick and many bikes were quickly caked in mud. Saturday’s ride consisted of eight sections. Because of the long loop and outstanding sections, the day was a long one for many riders. Many riders took up Lingbeck’s offer to camp on his land overnight, and ride in Sunday’s trials. Campfires dotted the landscape under a star filled night. Riders compared notes of the day’s ride and prepared for another day. The heavy morning fog quickly burned off and it was going to be a hot and humid day. Sunday was double points day
for the State Championship. This proved to be extra motivation for the riders. While the loop itself remained the same, most of the sections were changed to offer a fresh line for all riders. The grounds had firmed up from the previous day’s rain, and the sections weren’t as slick as they were the previous day. Many riders felt that this Lena Trials was one of the best ever put on by NITRO. Father and son riders from Wisconsin, Shawn and Mike Mauritz, felt the course set up was outstanding, and the loop was very well laid out. One of the youngest riders, up and comer Mitch Littlefield thought the sections were challenging, yet he had an awesome time! NITRO president Ralph Littlefield was thrilled with the big turnout of riders, and how outstanding each and every section was. A changing of the guard occurred over the weekend of riding. Dan and Jennifer Maupin have passed the torch in their roles as NITRO Secretary and Treasurer. Their many years of service to NITRO were greatly appreciated by all!

bikes and rider from yesteryear converge on our Michigan facility. Just because the riders mostly run salt and pepper hair (at least the ones with hair) doesn’t mean speed, competition, and tight racing is lacking in any way. The racing was close in a ton of classes as the event kicked off Saturday morning with Gary Anderson and Corky Root going at it in the +70 Expert class. In the end it was Anderson proving strongest going 1-1 for the overall. In the Open Age Intermediate class it was all business as John Alex Clark, Dave Romine and Ray Dunaway went to war. Clark is the kid of the bunch and goes fast, in fact he was fast enough to make the overall his aboard his Honda. Romine slid over from West Virginia to see what Michigan Motocross was all about, and a hard fought second overall as the day came to a close. Dunaway was the last man on the podium. In Sunday’s Post Vintage portion of the weekend no one was faster than the talented Tom Claerhout as he took home enough hardware to start a his own first place plaque bouquet. Claerhout took top honors in four Expert classes, proving without a shadow of doubt who was the fast man on the near perfect track. Jay Graf kept Claerhout honest in the Open Age Post Vintage Expert class as the two went at it early in both motos. Claerhout's youthful
energy and speed out ran the crafty lines and speed of the forty plus year old Graf who was on the line for each moto with a big grin as he enjoys keeping the young pups grounded. The Grand Prix 500 Expert class had new to AHRMA and Michigan Mafia legend Rusty Hibbs back on the track after a long break. Hibbs was a fast rider back in the day, and he still has it as he grabbed two wins aboard his pristine Team Dynamic YZ465. Don’t miss the last two AHRMA Great Lakes Regional events on Sept 19th and Oct 10th where vintage motocross returns to Log Road.
