It has been a few weeks since I’ve had the time to sit down and put a few words together. The big events of the MX year are behind us now and that will leave us a little breathing room. Loretta’s National Amateur Championship was good for many of our racers, most notably Jerry Robin as he won a championship in the 2 stroke class and did some serious damage in 250B aboard his 1985 CR250. Chad Watts’ pro national mechanic went through the old bike and had it ready for Loretta’s. Rumor mill has it that Jerry may be getting some help from Honda next season as he begins to compete in the A class. Josh Boaz had a great run in 65cc class with a 6th overall. Gavin Kadlec did well in 250 and Open Pro Sport. Minnesota sent a strong contingent of racers to Loretta’s, some twenty plus racers made the long trek. We had racers qualify in almost every class starting in the 50cc classes and moving up through +50. Our congratulations to all of the D23 racers that made it the big race, and gave it all they had. We have a strong contingent of racers headed for Big Sky Montana National Hare Scrambles so stay tuned for their results. Speaking of off-road, we wish the very best for Mitch Swenson as he recovers from a practice crash. We still have several Hare Scrambles on the schedule and if you have never ridden one you need to make this the year that you give it a try. It is lots of ride time, and a lot of fun. As with every discipline, there’s much to be learned from chasing the tree dodgers on wooded trails. August 10th was the Second Annual D23 Ride 4 Rights which was a success again this year. Look for an article covering this event in the next edition of Cycle USA. We will schedule one again next year and for those of you with a street legal bike, this is must ride. District business is going along on course. At this point in time there is nothing new and big in the offing. Lee Theis of Motokazie has gotten approval for his Conditional Use Permits and

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... plans to break ground soon on a new facility in the Faribault area. We wish him the best of luck and are looking forward to a new riding area. Take advantage of all the remaining events as the year is moving fast, and the season will be over before you know it. I hope to see you out riding before the snow flies. District 16 Annual Banquet That time again, and the annual announcement for the banquet is in this issue on page 58, and will also be posted on our district 16 website at www.amadistrict16.com. The banquet will be November 9th. There are special rooms rates available for a limited time only at the Kalahari Resort, until October 9th. You must make your reservations by then, and it would be a good ideal to make them early to assure availability as the resort does fill up. New this year, all the awards will be handed out after dinner, and dinner is earlier so even more of our members and their families will hopefully join us for this fantastic, year-end event.

Albertson boogies at Millville Millville, Minnesota â&#x20AC;&#x201C; July 26-28 By Rolfe Otterness

immy Albertson made a return to the Donny Schmit Memorial Amateur day at Spring Creek Park, about five years after his first visit when he was still an amateur rider. This time out the well-liked professional was just taking advantage of the Millville track to help race himself back into shape after injury, and he looked like he is getting shaped up, winning handily in the 14-24 and Open A classes. Of course, the Donny Schmit race is popular with many other outof-state riders and there were over 800 entries on hand for Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event held the day before the Pro National. On Sunday another complete amateur event was held, the Pro Track Challenge, with the complete (slightly tamed) track as run by the pros on Saturday.

Friday As might perhaps be expected, Albertson charged out front at the beginning of the Open A class and settled into a fast pace. Tyeson Humphrey took over second with the ever spry Bruce Gates running third. Albertson continued out front all the way to the drop of the flag. Humphrey ran a good moto to finish second and was only about 3 or 4 seconds behind at the end. Gates ran into some trouble as Zach Collier took over third with Clay Olson and Conner Ahlers following him across the line. Moto two started much the same with Al-

bertson jumping out into the early lead. Humphrey and Collier quickly slotted into second and third, setting up the order at the front for the remainder of the race, but neither one could challenge Albertson. Aaron Smith, out of Weatherford, Texas upped his game this time out and topped his first moto eighth with a fourth. Tyler Rennison from Missouri improved from twelfth to fifth. The 250B class had a full line of riders at the gate and Taylor Strauss hustled down the straight ahead of the rest of the pack for the holeshot. Travis Muller pushed past him as they Cody Tebo grabs a hit the famous Millville good start in 14-24C Whoops and Calev Self moved into third. Shortly thereafter Self dropped Strauss back another spot and closed in on Muller, pressuring him for a couple of laps. Muller pulled a bit of a gap at the end to take the win. Gavin Wilkins and Jacob Wilke running close together at the flag to secure third and fourth over Nathan Regier.

Regier charged off the line to lead through the first turn in the next moto, but Wilkins was the man on the move, pushing through to take over the lead on the first lap. Regier found himself defending position against Wilke and Cameron West. West put on a surge and took over second on the next lap but Wilkins was

strong out front and took the win with a pretty good margin. Regier withstood major pressure from Wilke on the last lap to hold third at the checkered and Muller finished out with a fifth. Alex Ingalls roosted down the straight to lead the Supermini class around turn one and down toward the sandwash in moto one. Maverick Engstrom put on a surge and closed in early, making the pass to lead lap one. Ingalls and Diamonte Stugelmeyer scrapped a bit over second, but Ingalls bit the dirt on lap three at the bottom of collarbone hill, dropping back a few positions. Trent Wittwer was running strong and moved up for second towards the middle of the race while Schugelmeyer dropped out. At the end, Engstrom prevailed with Wittwer second over Damon Cornelius. Justin Wallace and Drew Slocum rounded out the top five Ingalls and Engstrom rounded turn one side-by-side going into moto two. Engstrom managed to wrestle control away and led throughout the first lap while Ingalls found competition from DJ Burmey who moved up into second. On the next lap Burmey really poured it on and overtook Engstrom for the lead. Wittwer was on the move and after passing Ingalls, he started to push Engstrom for second about the time the white flag came out. Burmey took the win with a solid edge over Wittwer, who managed to make the pass and put just a bit of distance over Engstrom by the finish. Ingalls took fourth with Schugelmeyer fifth. Sunday Broc Peterson, riding a Honda out of Ohio jumped out to an early lead as the 250A class took to the track. Peterson seemed to have adapted well to the track, now run with the pro uphill section in place and he led all the way for the win. Jacob Boss slotted into second early on and he too looked solid as he stayed in position for the duration. Logan Swanson took third over Tristan Titus and Philip Maus. Cole Hood pulled the holeshot in the first moto, but Peterson was on the gas and led at the end of the first lap. He started to inch away from Hood and built the gap to about 10 seconds by the time the moto ended. Maus and Boss were running close as they hit the finish line for third and fourth. Tyler Kuntz was not too far back in fifth. Nathan Browning jumped out front in the Open C class and led for the first lap, but Seth Fischer got by on lap two and stayed out front for the rest of the race. Browning was close to the same pace and finished just a couple of 8

seconds back with Mason Persh about five bike lengths back in third. Josh Dougherty and Kyle Hoefs rounded out the top five. Persha started better in moto two and was out front by over eight seconds at the checkered. Browning held second with a decent gap over Jordan Braaten and Hoefs. Dillon Nelson nailed the start in the 65cc 79 class and immediately started to edge away from the pack. Isaac Moyle bumped up into second by the end of lap two but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reel in Nelson who went on for the win. Avery Long and Ethan McMahon rolled across the line behind Moyle for third and fourth with Weston Milas taking fifth. Moyle jumped out to lead early in the second moto and was running good with Nelson on his tail. But on the last lap he toppled and ended up with a DNF. Trevin Nelson came on strong to take the win but Dillon Nelson went 1-2 for the overall. Milas was third over Long and Gavin Tilford rounded out the top five.

Crossroads Re-Opening Weekend

reat Weather welcomed the riders to the grand opening weekend race event at Crossroads (sort of a reopening with the new ownership). With some track changes as well as free hot dogs for everyone it had to be a great event. What’s even better than free food? A shot at a FREE bike! Crossroads put up a brand new Pitster Pro to celebrate that the track is back and ready to host some great races. With the crowd gathered, Trenton Hartke was really loving Crossroads MX as he was the winner of the pit bike. The staff at Crossroads did a great job keeping the track good all day. The facility is wonderful with showers, modern restrooms etc. They also worked on the beginner track, and I know for sure that with that option open to ride there were some true starting riders working on their skills to be able to race in the future. With school getting ready to start it’s good to teach the kids some math. The 50Sr class did just that with the moto scores. When Bowman made his way to the line in the +50 class he was greeted by Kawasaki rider Gary Adams, another fast long time rider, so you knew that it was going to be a great race. When the gate dropped the two riders flew to the front of the pack. Just when it looked like it was going to be a great race Adams slowed, allowing Bowman to take the win. Adams, “I had a flat tire, but I will be ready for the second moto.” During the break between motos guess who helped him fix his flat tire? Bowman, so he could get back out on the track for the second moto. That’s what local motocross is all about, and what makes our sport great. In the second moto Adams had some issues but kept charging. It looked like Bowman would have another win and the overall, but Seth Bowman on his way to fifth in Open C.

he annual “July Double header” weekend is one that many look forward to in District 16. With all the activities they have through the weekend you could almost forget you came there to race. Pulling into the pits late Thursday night, the parking lot was already filling up. The Richardson family provided a practice on Friday on the ever changing and improving Arkansaw track. Orres’ first moto win and second moto third was good for second overall. 50Sr had just as close of a battle as the +25 class. Cole Marsolek and Wyatt Milas really went at it, with Easton Block in the mix as well. The first moto saw Marsolek and Milas swap positions a couple times with Block was just behind those two waiting for any chance of a mistake. Sure enough Milas made that mistake and Block capitalized on it. Milas tried to get back ahead, but Block held strong for second. Moto two saw those three get out front again, this time Block had problems early, dropping to the back of the pack. unday August 4th, the Nuke Series was underway just as things are starting to transition towards the tail end of the moto season. Just two more Nuke series rounds remain before the trophies come out; it’s been a great year! The weather this summer has been fantastic, especially compared to the 100’s every weekend of last summer it’s a welcome change. The racing was great as always this weekend, with some riders still at Loretta’s, while others came out having been there all week, still wanting #721 Lolito Eguia and Harley Howell more. In the first moto the gate dropped on Tyler Miller out of Yorkville, IL getting to the front with Steven Freund and Nathan Lange right behind him. With the first lap coming to a close Freund finally found a line taking the inside hard for the lead with Miller and Lange still close behind. Coming around on the second lap, Miller went down bumping Lange into second and Garrett Deieso to third. Colton Burk was battling back from a rough start and caught up to Deieso getting by for a couple turns, only to get passed back. Deieso was on the charge coming down the hill to take the inside from Lange, moving up to second as the white flag was waving. Crossing the line Freund took the win. In the second moto Freund took the win and the overall with Deieso in second for second overall and Burk in third for third overall (4-3). 250B came off the line for the first moto with Brian Krohn taking the lead on the gate drop, followed by Mark Marincic and Sean Miller out of Indiana. Coming up the first jump Marincic powered up the hill to take the lead, then through the next set of corners Krohn tucked the front wheel going down. This moved Miller up to second and Tyler Lowe took over third. After three laps Marincic, just returning home from Lorettas was creating a good gap out front as Lowe was battling with Miller behind him. On the last lap Lowe made his move by Miller to take over second. Time ran out as the checkered flag flew giving Marincic the win with Lowe and Miller behind. In the second moto Marincic took the win again, Miller second and second overall and Nick Inman finished third after not starting the first moto. This gave Lowe third overall with second and fourth place finishes. +25 was a great race today as Travis Sewell was at Motosports Park with a weekend off the nationals, lining up with seven other riders. Off the gate drop Sewell took the holeshot followed by Justin Kelly who got home from Loretta’s late the night before and Ryan Rowntree. Sewell was riding at the top of his game, pulling awa,y the battles were going on behind him. First with Rowntree taking second from Kelley in the back of the track. Coming down the hill Kelly charged back to re-take the position. Rowntree was charging back as James Garrett made his push and took over third. Coming across the line Sewell won followed by Kelly and Garrett. In the second moto things ended exactly the CYCLE USA, September 2013

same giving Sewell the overall with Kelly and Garrett rounding out the top three. I spoke with Kelly about being out right after racing all week and he said, “Yeah, we drove ten hours yesterday to get home and make it out here for some more racing, but man I’m really tired and beatup. Had a good time out at Loretta’s even though it was just muddy and raining the entire week, always a good experience regardless.” It was a great day for racing out at Motosports Park, the weather was fantastic and despite some people not making it home in time from Loretta’s or being too tired, the turn-out was great. The track has been ever changing this year, all for the better as things are moving up and up from such a well rooted track in the Illinois landscape. Be sure to find some time to make it out before the season ends, there’s still some of the best racing and riding time to come. Kruse doubles up at Kellogg Kellogg, Minnesota - Aug. 11 By Dusty Rose

ith summer in full swing, racing at the always popular Kellogg facility continued on this midAugust Sunday. It was as expected, another great day. The 250Jr. 14-16 class consisted of eight racers, and Collin Reinhart popped out of the gates and took the lead role. Mason Marty, Jacqueline Riess, and Sam Annis kept close. As Reinhart opened up a lead and Marty maintained second, Annis snuck past Riess and took over third place. Reinhart was the first to the checkered flag as Marty captured second. In the second moto Reinhart took the holeshot. Nate Myers, Marty and George Hodkinson from Wanamingo filled out the top four positions. Reinhart looked smooth and steady, having opened up a three second lead, but on lap three he flew over “Kong” and went down. Myers, Marty and Annis sped by. Myers also encountered trouble, giving the moto two win to Mason Marty. Sam Annis claimed second and Jacqueline Riess placed third. In the 125 12+ class, Walker Kruse from Janesville, MN squeezed through for the holeshot. Tom Flintrop was in hot pursuit with Austin Warner, Jake Vondrasek and Mikal Guberud battling for positions. For two laps Flintrop seemed glued to Kruse’s rear tire. Into lap three, Kruse’s front tire got tucked in a rut and his back end slipped out, laying his KTM on its side; Flintrop tried to swerve around but caught the KTM’s rear tire, sending Flintrop head over heels. Without losing a position, both riders remounted and took off. Seconds later Flintrop came off the track, unable to finish the race. Kruse was first to sail through the finish line. Warner held on for second. Vondrasek and Guberud placed third and fourth. Kruse also won moto two. Vondrasek and Warner swapped the second and third positions.

In the 85cc 9-12 class, KTM rider Josh Boaz ripped the holeshot and checked out. Austin Kristiansen of LeCenter, MN held down second place for a couple laps before getting held up in a corner. Nolen Rommel, Kaden Degenhardt and Kevin Checkalski crossed the finish line in the second, third and fourth positions. In moto two Boaz opened up a ten second lead. he Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders held the 2013 District 17/ Illinois State Championship Hillclimb at their club grounds just outside White City, Illinois. Nick Bronnenberg, from Perry, Iowa, was the only double class champion, taking the 600cc and 750cc class titles. Bronnenberg was in second place behind Andy Fortner’s 3.299 second first round ride in the 600cc class, but posted an outstanding 3.234 time on his CR500 on his second ride to take the class win. Fortner’s first round ride held up for second with Chuck Mathewson claiming third in 3.306 seconds. Bronnenberg’s winning time was also good for the Amateur Fast Time of the day award. In 750cc class action, Bronnenberg’s first round 3.280 second time on his Kawasaki was good for that class win. Steve Kuhl finished second on his Suzuki with Brent Land taking third on his Honda. Bronnenberg finished his night by also winning the King Of The Hill class, a one run winner take all event for the ten fastest riders of the day. His 3.183 second time there was the overall fastest of the night. Jon Creek was second in 3.279 seconds with Kirk Gorsuch third. Three family teams, the Fortners, Wheelwrights, and Peters enjoyed double state titles. ‘Little Fast Andy’ took the 85Jr title with a 3.821 second time on his CR85, with that time also

earning him the Youth Fast Time award. Derrick Bell was second with Brodie Bennett third. Andy Fortner took the class title in the +40 class with a 3.327 second run on his Honda. Shakedown Series Kicks Off at LTM Casey, Illinois - July 27 By James Pinckard

erfect weather welcomed riders to round one of the LTM Shakedown series. It was also a Classic weekend. Not a classic bike weekend, but a classic track weekend. Lincoln Trail Motosports has two great tracks. They have the new “Bomber” track but they also have the “Classic” track that for 40 years has hosted riders like National champions Mark Barnett and Mike Brown as well as thousands of regional riders who dreamed of being National champion fast. So when you went on the track it was like saying hello to an old friend. I think it’s great LTM still has events on this track, so new riders as well as the old can still experience true Motocross history from Illinois and District 17. One thing that is different is the work that went into the Classic track, where Tim and Drew hauled in many loads of fresh dirt giving it

a great racing surface. Track conditions were really good all day for the racers to enjoy, and the result of that was great racing and battles all day. Welcome to the Shakedown series. Everyone loves a good race, if you are in it or watching it, just the same. It doesn’t have to be over the win, it can be mid-pack, or even at the back. The 250C class had more than its share of great racing today. There were battles throughout the pack that made this class just fun to watch. In the first moto Suzuki rider Tyler Harris took the holeshot and put the hammer down. Harris was riding great, but was missing out on all the fun because behind him there was some serious racing going on. One of the best battles was with Yamaha riders Bryce Cox, Sam Sappington, Kawasaki riders Brett Guffey and Doug Trombi. These guys were all over each other trying passes, trying not to get passed, and all the time working their way to the front of the pack.

In the end Sappington ended up second with Cox third, Guffey fourth, and Trombi ninth. In the second moto Harris again took the start and pulled away for the moto and overall win. I guess he doesn’t play well with others because behind him again it was a battle. This time Honda rider Hunter Wilson rose to the top of the fight and took second for the moto. Cox fought his way to third and Yamaha rider Joe Hagemeier finished fourth. The overall winner was clear with Harris taking both motos. Second overall went to Cox and sneaking into third overall, Wilson and his Honda. Where did the other fighters go? Well Sappington finished fourth, Guffey fifth and Trombi had a better second moto and finished seventh overall. Thanks for the great racing guys!! The 250B class also had some good racing. In the first moto Halls Husky rider Paxton Kerber took the holeshot with Yamaha

riders Jake Grafelman and Nick Lasecki hot on his trail. Paxton put his head down and tried to run but the sound of a two-stroke Yamaha was strong in his ears. Grafelman made a pass on Kerber and that’s the spot he needed for the moto win. Kerber didn’t let the pass shake him and finished second with Lasecki third. In the second moto Grafelman again was two smoking the pack and took the win. Lasecki had his 111 Yamaha rolling across the finish line for second. They say when you get older you slow down, or some say you’re too old to race. Well someone forgot to tell the riders in the +25, 35 and 55 classes. In +25, Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond was setting some of the fastest lap times of the day on his way to winning both motos. Aaron Cater finished second overall and Jason Gerling third. In the +35 class Kawasaki rider Bill Grothans took the overall with Aric Walton second.

Most riders wouldn’t even hesitate to answer these questions with a yes, but on August 4th, it was more than just the thrill and stress reliever. It was to remember an important person that played a huge role in the northern Minnesota motocross scene. The first annual memorial race for Joe Brown was held at Echo Valley in Brookston Minnesota. Brown passed away in January at the age of 55. He was practicing at Cedar Lake Arena in New Richmond Wisconsin when he crashed into a face of a Parade lap before the races in memory of Joe Brown jump. he Fortners had a very good weekend at the Pleasure Riders on July 20 and 21. Andy (Fast Andy) Fortner, claimed the 600cc class win and the Overall Fast Time award Saturday night, while his son Andrew (Little Fast Andy), claimed the 85Jr class wins, as well as the Youth Fast Time both days. Joe McGurer was the 600cc class winner and took the Fast Time award on Sunday, with Fortner second in both the class standing and Fast Times. The 600cc class was exceptionally fast on Sunday, posting the three top times of the day with Jon Creek taking third in the class with the third fastest run. The Wheelwrights combined for eight class wins with Eric taking the 250cc, 450cc and 600cc four stroke class wins on Saturday and repeating in the 250cc and 450cc classes on Sunday. Eric’s daughter, Morgan, claimed the Women’s class both days, and also the 200cc class Saturday night. Eric posted the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fastest times Saturday night on his three class winning rides. he Nielsen Enterprises Lake County Fair Stadium Motocross took place once again during the Lake County Fair in Grayslake, Illinois, just north of Chicago for the 28th straight year. The oneoff fair race, promoted by Schaefer Tracks, brings out a few pros and top locals who want to compete for the $7500 purse, and race in front of their friends and family with a huge crowd of fairgoers. 2009 AMA Arenacross Champion Jeff Gibson took four big wins in front of the large and enthusiastic crowd over the two night event. Gibson battled most of both nights with snowcross superstar and local racer Ross Martin, and the two had an epic battle in the 450 class on Wednesday night with Gibson making a last lap, last corner block pass for the win. Gibson, who drove out from Ohio by himself for the event, borrowed a 450 from TUF Racing’s Dave Antolak and a 250 from local privateer Jody Walker. “My bikes and van burned to the ground a few weeks ago in a freak fire, Gibson mentioned of being bike-less. “I was driving home from a race with Willy Browning and we smelled smoke and looked and the back of the van was on fire. I grabbed my phone and wallet and jumped out and everything, three bikes and the van, burned to the ground. I want to thank TUF and Jody for letting me use their bikes for this event.” Martin and Gibson went at it in each main event at Lake County, but Wednesday night’s 450 main would be the one people

will talk about for quite a while. Gibson grabbed the early lead and Martin moved into second and stalked the 2013 Arenacross series runner-up for a few laps before making a pass for the lead. Martin then settled in and began to pull away looking to take a huge win in front of the local crowd. Gibson had other plans and picked up the pace late in the race. He started stalking Martin and showing a wheel in many of the large bowl turns. In the closing laps it looked as if Martin would hang on for the win, but Gibson gave it one last shot and overjumped a large tabletop on the final lap. Gibson landed in the flat and in the process, took away Martin’s line in the next corner. The two then raced side by side down the final straight to the finish with Gibson taking an amazing win just inches ahead of Martin. “Ross rides really well every time I see him, which isn’t often,” Gibson commented of his main competitor. “I had to go for that pass. I drove a long way out here and didn’t want to settle for second. That was a really fun race.” An understandably upset Martin said, “I wanted that one and thought I had it but he came in there really hot and kind of pushed me out. I’m just happy to be here after missing it last year and want to thank the fans and all my sponsors for supporting me.” The two went at it again in Thursday’s 250 main with Gibson taking the win, but Gibson took the final race, Thursday’s 450 main and took off for a comfortable win. “I didn’t want to battle him again,” Gibson said of Martin. “I got a good start and took off this time. I didn’t want to do that all over again.”

Sportland2 Suzuki’s Ryan Robinson took a big win in Wednesday’s 450 amateur main event and finished second in the 250 amateur class to Kenosha, Wisconsin’s Brandon Clifford. But on Thursday, Robinson hit the dirt over a tricky step up and broke a bone in his hand. Mike Wendricks took two big wins in the pitbike class on his Sano KLX110. espite rain in the forecast 385 entries filled the list for the August MX, looking to pickup some District 16 points. With summer winding down and school peeking from around the corner many families came out to enjoy a day of racing. Open C started out the day on the main track and Luke Zimmerman grabbed a handfull of throttle to lead the thirty other riders around the holeshot corner. Zimmerman fell off the pace in the west end and as they hit the plateau Brandon Heinzel was leading. Bryce Telfer was in second with Mack Lee and Kyle Whysol right behind. By the time lap two started Telfer was in the lead and Lee was going to work on Heinzel. Lee made it around in the barn section and despite a hard charge Tyler Lowe won overalls in

ford on the inside was able to edge his way around first. Telfer again got out front in the west end and cruised to another moto win. Sirko settled into second with pressure from Josh Dearborn early in the moto, and then a hard push from Kristopher Korn on the white flag lap. In the end it was Telfer (1/1) with the overall, Sirko (3/2) in second and Korn (4/3) in third. Kevin Yde launched down the start straight and around the holeshot almost five bike lengths ahead of the other +45 riders, but by the time he hit the plateau Yde had a good view of Patrick Boydenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rear fender. Boyden held his lead to the checkers. After being buried mid pack at the holeshot Eddie Smulders fought his way up to third by the time the third began. Smulders kept charging but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t catch the leaders before the finish. Yde grabbed another big holeshot in moto two and this time began putting some

breathing room between him and the rest of the class. Randy Scott was running second at the plateau but had Jonathan Hyde and Patrick Boyden closing in on him. Boyden got around Hyde and then as they passed the start straight on lap three, jumped the small tabletop right behind Scott. Boyden was able to get ahead of Scott, but couldn’t close in on Yde before the finish. Yde went 2/1 to edge

out Boyden (1/2) for the overall. Yde, “I got both holeshots and that helps. The second moto I got out front and stayed all the way. Once the rain stopped the track got really nice. for Open A moto one with Jeremy Kuhn close behind. Philbrick didn’t waste any time and right away started putting a gap on the rest of the class. Soon enough Matthew Menzer was running second with Ty Tyrrell right on his back wheel. Mays slipped past Ryan Hughson on lap four and then held onto fourth to the finish. Tyrrell had been working on Menzer all moto, and finally on lap five in the east

end he slipped past to take away second. Mays grabbed the second moto holeshot, Menzer right there with him. Mays held on out front the entire moto leaving Menzer to battle with Tyrrell for second. Tyrrell finally found an opening in Menzer’s defense and slipped into second just past the plateau on lap two. Kuhn was running a solid fourth with Hughson looking for any opening to get by. A 2/2 day by Tyrrell was good for the overall while Mays (4/1) was second, and Menzer (3/3) was third. Carter Biese owned 65cc today with the exception of the moto one holeshot. Dj Gritzmacher held on out front for half a lap before Biese got by and then cruised to an easy moto win. Aidan McCormick ran third all moto with Brandon Martyniak

and Eugene Wolff close behind. In moto two Biese powered out of the gate and led all the way to the finish without much pressure. Gritzmacher locked into second and Martyniak held on in third. Biese got the overall with Gritzmacher second and McCormick third. Biese had a near perfect day as he won six of six motos. Biese “ It was a good day. I think I got three holeshots but I won every moto. In moto one of 65cc I didn’t get the bike warmed up enough and it bogged a little off the start, but I was able to get out front pretty quick. It was really muddy that first moto but second moto it was perfect. I was out front most of the day so that helped when it was mud. By the afternoon you could put it any where and the track was tacky and real good. Thanks to my sponsors- Orange Brigade,

Also Motozone tracks for all the practice time.” By the time 125Jr got their first gate drop the rain was falling pretty steady, but that didn’t stop Jake Garwood from getting out front at the holeshot. By the first time over the plateau Shane Cooper was right on Garwood’s rear fender, and he made the pass into the lead on the east end. Cooper held on out front with Garwood close enough that any mistake would have resulted in a

loss of the lead. Moto two started without Cooper who had broken his collarbone in another class and this time Seth Doeberlein was out front at the holeshot. Garwood got to the lead quick and then put a gap on the rest of the class. Nate Telfer got around Tyler Harper at the Gatorpit and then held off Harper for the rest of the moto. Doeberlein held on in fourth to the checkers. Sportsman B/C (as well as Open B and 250B) belonged to Tyler Lowe today. Lowe beat out Jason Bernhardt at the holeshot and then the rest of the race. ond until he lost his back-end and went down. Kail McCormack moved into second with Taylor Strauss holding third. Strauss didn’t let up and on the final sections of the white flag lap he slipped past McCormack to grab second. Moto two was a repeat for Lowe as he powered down the start and then held the lead to the finish. This time McCormack was in front of Bernhardt who had Max Malkmus and Strauss putting pressure on him. By lap three positions two through five were close enough an EZup would have covered them. Malkmus was able to move up into second and Strauss was now running third, right on his rear fender. Malkmus held Strauss off to the finish but moto math worked in Strauss’ favor as he grabbed second overall behind Lowe. Lowe, “In 450B I pulled the first holeshot and stayed out front but Tylor Skodras pulled it in the second moto. I was able to pass him on the last lap to get that overall. In 250B Justin Wolf got the holeshot but I passed him right away in the sand and led the

rest of the race. In the second moto I got the holeshot but messed up and Justin got around me. I passed him back on the last lap. I have been getting faster lately and it feels good today. I won all my motos so it was a good day. The track was amazing after the mud this morning. Once they tilled it the track was really nice, it formed up ruts and got really nice. Thanks to Southeast Sales, Wil-Surge Electric, my Dad and family for everything they do to help me out.” After an initial scare that the second motos may be shortened, the rain stopped and the Aztalan track crew went out and worked their magic to produce a great afternoon of racing. The hard work the club has put into the track the past couple of seasons is paying off as shown by the track being able to soak up the steady morning rain. Wells tops Macomb Scrambles Macomb, Illinois - July 28 By Kylie Kelsall

FO hosted their sixth race this season in Macomb, Illinois. With a great track to ride on and beautiful weather to ride in, racers had a perfect day to come out and do what they love. Easton Morgan dominated the 65cc Beginner class on Sunday. Parker Townsend and Elijah Berryman put up a pretty good fight, finishing not far behind. The two couldn’t quite catch up with Morgan. In the 85cc class Tanner Whipple and TJ Nees went at it again for the number one spot. Whipple took the lead and at the checkpoint Whipple came in at seventeen minutes and Nees about a minute back. Second lap Whipple came in a full two minutes before Nees and they held the positions until the end. Carley Foxall had no problem getting and holding a lead on her competitors. Foxall was the only rider in the Women’s class to make three laps. By the second lap Foxall gained three minutes on competitor Katie Parker, and also got the chance to make another lap. Foxall put the rest of her endurance into her last lap, which also turned out to be her fastest of the entire race. Supermini’s Cody Barnes took the win over Nolan Blaesing and Michael Burtle. Barnes was the only rider to complete a sixteen minute lap time out of the entire Supermini class. Barnes came to win Sunday and that is exactly what he did. Matt McDonald was on his game this weekend in Macomb, being the only rider in the C class to make six laps during the hour and a half race. McDonald’s fastest lap was about fifteen minutes. In Open B Kevin Vance placed first over Brad Glasnovich and Corey Purlee. Purlee and Glasnovich battled for second the entire race. They matched each others time up until the end when Glasnovich won with five seconds to spare. Open A rider Drake Lineback conquered

his competition on Sunday. He made seven laps and finished in just over 118 minutes. Second place rider Dave Edsall finished with six laps and 108 minutes. In AA Austin Wells and Shane Klimek had a great battle for first. Wells and Klimek traded first positions every lap until the fifth when the times began to match each other. Finally, in the last lap Wells gained some space and came in less than a minute before Klimek. Sunday was a great day of racing for all the riders. Great weather and great support helped a lot. aturday was a day for racers to hone their skills before the next day’s competition, and approximately 150 were on hand to make the most of the opportunity, enjoying perfect riding conditions. It is customary at Berm Benders for the staff to hold some kind of contest or competition to get the racing families involved. This weekend’s was a “Clean Bike” contest. It proved to bring out the best in racing dads that have a tendency of obsessive compulsive disorder. Around 20 bikes were in the contest and finalist were

quickly whittled down to the top four. At that point the head judge pulled out an assortment of wrenches and instructed the final four to remove their motorcycle seats. An inspection into the cleanliness inside the air boxes would determine the winner of a brand new power washer, compliments of Berm Benders Raceway. When the winner Austin Rasmussen was finally determined, the crowd dispersed to go back to their campsites, or were off to play bingo at the registration building. The forecast for the racing on Sunday promised to be perfect. The weather did not disappoint. The morning dawned clear and bright with temps in the mid 50’s and a high in the afternoon around 75 degree’s. The track was perfectly manicured and by Kurt Caswell and company and ready to be hammered on by around 300 entries. In morning practice, if there were betting, smart money would be on #88 Jaxon “The Big Ticket” Opitz in the 65cc mini classes, and on #7 Marissa Polencheck racing in the Women’s class. The first race of the day was the 50cc oil injected class with local resident McCoy Leger coming home in first place on his Cobra with second place finisher Brady Karolevitz on his KTM and McCoy’s brother Jacob Leger placing third on a KTM. McCoy Leger also took home the gold in the Multi-speed 4-8 class. In the 65cc 10-11 class, above mentioned #88 Jaxon Opitz took the lead at the drop of the gate and pulled out a sizable lead, and

never challenged for the victory. Second place was claimed by another KTM rider, Nick Paige of Forest Lake MN, with Blake Goding coming in third. Opitz would also stand on the top step in the 65cc 7-11 class. In Girls JR 9-11 racing Kourtney Trautner made the trip from South Dakota, and it proved to be well worth the effort, as Ms Trautner came home in first place with 1-1 finishes. In the Women's class the racing for second place was close and fast. First place was decided early by the efforts of a hard charging KTM mounted Marissa Polencheck. Polencheck won the drag race to the first turn and steadily pulled away while putting on a good show for the spectators. Polencheck showed that she isn’t afraid to air it out over the big jumps and keep the throttle pinned through the long fast rhythm section of the spectator friendly course. The 250B races proved to be highly entertaining with a stacked field of some of Minnesota’s fastest riders lining up for an epic battle for top honors. The top slot was filled at the end of the day by Yamaha mounted Gavin Wilkins #565 (1-1) with Kawasaki KX250-F speedster Spencer Henrickson from nearby Dalbo going 3-2 for a second overall. In the 85cc-9-11 and 85cc 9-12 races, Aaron Boatman was on a hot streak, going 1-1 in both classes. In the +40A, the racers left nothing on the table in their battle for supremacy.

At the end of the day Martin Melby came out on top going 1-1 with Honda mounted Gary Goeden from Blaine MN second and Jeff Johnson third. At the checkered ďŹ&#x201A;ag of the ďŹ nal race of the day, another fun, successful and safe day of racing was in the books. The one pro racer from Colorado (up for the prior weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national at Millville) reported that he loved the track racing in MN in general, and all in attendance would seem to agree with that sentiment. he string of great racing weather continued in MN for the weekend of August 17-18. Quite a blessing from the weather gods, after delays to the start of the season because of late winter snow. Since that time the weekends have been stellar for all the hardcore racers and spectators to come out. Sunday August 18th dawned clear and 60 degrees with high forecasted to reach the mid eighties... Perfect! With the Viking

Clash happening at Spring Creek, the bike turnout was a little light, but that was offset by a good turnout of quad racers ready to churn up the sand at the south track, while the bikes mostly ran on the north track of the legendary Norsemen Motorcycle Club racing facility. Today’s race was being put on by the staff at RTW Promotions. On the north track a storm was brewing in the form of the Open B class. At the drop of the gate for the ﬁrst moto the intensity was building to a crescendo as the #48 Suzuki of perennial favorite Blake Waller of Princton

MN, intent on putting his stamp on the day powered into the high speed right hander with the throttle to the stop while Peter Nickel was barking at his heels, on his #22 Honda. Third in line off the start was the mean green Kawasaki of Casey Hultgren. In this first moto, Waller and Nickel fought in a race long battle that saw them charge to the checkered flag in that order with Hultgren holding onto third. At the end of the day Waller took the overall with 1-1 motos, Nickel second going 2-3 and John Schulte from Lindstrom, MNstepped it up going 5-2 for third. The +30A class is always a highlight on race day, and today was no exception with a potent class of racers at the gate in their quest to dominate the race to the first turn. At the drop of the gate it was Mark “The Hard Charger” Arends serving notice that the only way to victory circle was through him. Consistently reeling off the fastest laps on his Suzuki, insured him first place,

but not by much. #180 Martin Melby was hot on Arends’ heels, with the Kawasaki of Tim Pospisil right behind at the line in both motos. Finishing order on the day was Arends 1-1, Melby second going 2-2 and Pospisil finishing 3-3. The top two finishers in the SrA class came to Cambridge from Hibbing and Rochester respectively with a North Branch resident in third. #155 KTM mounted Warren Hanninen from the north went 1-1 in both motos with the second place Chuck Thompsen from the south going 3-2 on his Honda and #180 Marty Melby finishing 2-3 for third in a race that was a real barn burner! The 65cc 7-11 gate was stacked stacked stacked. Forest Lake resident and class front runner Nick “Big Air” Paige continued on his winning ways by setting blistering laps and bustin out the “big air” while being tailed by a hard charging Bodie Swanson and #127 Brandon Nel-

egacross was back in action August the 17th, kicking off round seven of nine, bringing the end of the season closer as the summer cruises right by. A lot of schools are back in session and it has been a great summer for racing without a doubt. Megacross was in full swing tonight with some great racing. The new back section of the track was tweaked a bit more as well some extra lighting thrown in to make sure everyone could get around without any issues. Kicking off the night was 1424 with thirteen riders blasting off the line. Coming out in front was Jacob Wever followed by Damon Thomas and Brian Krohn. Around the first light pole everything shook up as Krohn grabbed second and Damon Tatar moved into third with Wever still out in the lead. Coming right back through the whoops was Thomas as he cruised by to settle back into third as Wever and Krohn started to pull away through the tabletops. The battle for third was all over the place with Tatar grabbing it back on the next lap only to have Mark Marincic push his way in after a bad start. Things got interesting coming up to the white flag when Krohn squared off the bowl turn and got up in

front of Wever to take over the lead after being close the entire race. Unfortunately right before the checkered flag jump Krohn went down giving Wever the win as Marincic also moved up for second. 85cc kept the action moving as Patrick Murphy took the holeshot with Jonah Geistler and Garrett Ward right behind him. Charging through the whoops everyone was still bunched up, and Geistler took the lead. Coming around on the second lap Ward finally found his line to take over second going around the hairpin on the inside with Geistler still within reach. Thor Rick was charging hard and on the final lap made his was around Murphy to take third. They crossed the finish line with Geistler in first followed by Ward and Rick bringing a great race to a close. The Open B class was small tonight, but that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop them from having a great battle. The gate dropped with Jesse Keith taking the holeshot followed by Talan Hansen and #35 Patrick Murphy and Jonah Kelsy Rogers. Heading into Geistler battle in the 85cc class the whoops Rogers got around mission and got by Keith in the Hansen settling into second. whoops to take over the lead Crossing the line for the second with Thomas also on a charge lap Hansen got back into second now battling with Keith. Down taking the inside line before the the straight Thomas pegged his tabletop with Damon Thomas Kawasaki, beating Keith in the following right behind him movdrag race to the corner to take ing into third past Rogers. On over second. Crossing the the third lap Hansen was on a

checkers Hansen held out for first after a great race. Open A riders were out in full force tonight to keep things interesting. Coming off the line Maxx Malatia shot out front for an early lead with Brent Duffe out of Iowa and Malachi Messenger also getting great starts. They moved into the whoops with Kyle White shooting hard around the outside, pushing into second while Duffe was still holding on for third. Charing around for a couple laps Tom Hofmaster finally made his way into the action, getting around Duffe for third, fighting off Messenger on the way by. Toward the end of the race White was pushing hard with his teammate Malatia, but wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to get by. Malatia won followed by White and Hofmaster. In 50cc 4-8 there was some good racing with everyone coming off the line ready to battle. The gates dropped with Nicholas CYCLE USA, September 2013 47

Stefancik taking the holeshot followed by Andrew Hensch and Sadie Quest. Around the hairpin Kendall Eslinger went hard around the outside moving into second with Hensch third. Stefancik started pulling away as Quest ran hard to get by Hensch, taking over third. Coming across the line for the checkered flag Stefancik held on for the win with Eslinger and Quest rounding out the top three. The 65cc Beginner class had another great turnout with eleven riders ready for the main. Four wide into the first turn Lucas Geistler came out in front with Peyton Carpenter and Zennon Shain right behind him. Coming into the table tops Geistler was pulling away slightly as Jayare Eguia went flying by Shain in the air to take over third. On the next lap Geistler had went down, moving Carpenter up to the front with Eguia and Shain behind him looking to make a move. Once again through the tabletops Eguia made his move to the lead getting by Carpenter and immediately started pulling away riding smooth as ever. With the white flag waving everything completely shook up with Eguia still up front, but Ian Murphy moved up to second and Brett Aimone was holding down third and they finished in that order,

ending yet another great race this evening. Later into the night 250C was revving up and launching into the first turn with Cody Barnes taking the holeshot on his Yamaha followed by Chris Kincaid and Kevin Benck. Into the off camber jump Daniel Hale made his move on Benck bumping into third while Barnes was on fire already pulling away from the pack. The battle for third raged on as Wade Schnowske was charging back from a bad start to take over third down the straight. Schnowske kept the momentum going as he got by Kincaid through the whoops and started trying to reel in Barnes. The laps ran out as they crossed the finish line leaving Barnes untouched for the win followed up by Schnowske and Kincaid. The night wrapped up smooth as ever with the crew at Megacross keeping everything flowing well. The weather couldn’t have been better keeping the track conditions one hundred percent all night. There are two rounds of Megacross remaining this season, and with kids back in school, the Saturday nights become even more popular with families. The last rounds should be great, so don’t miss out!

his past week on Tuesday Stateline MX ran their final Battle at the Border series race along with their fair race for the year. The track was extended out in front of the grandstands, adding a few new sections to keep everything interesting. It was a long weekend for the track crew, having a race Saturday and a make-up race Sunday morning,

then back on Tuesday for the fair action. This was the last race of the series, but there is one more make-up race from the very first round that got rained out, coming in October. The track was looking great, keeping everything interesting for the fair-goers and racers alike. Supermini was up at the gate ready to kick off the fair racing for the evening. Off the start, Nick Lorenz came out up front followed by Rj Mackenzie and Anthony Wallace. Cruising through the new fair section Wallace made his move on Mackenzie while Lorenz was already making a gap up front. Coming into the rhythm section Cody Barnes went outside to pass Mackenzie taking over third. As they moved through the table section everyone got bunched up as Wallace and Barnes caught up with Lorenz, making it anyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game. They all battled back and forth the entire race until on the last lap Barnes was able to make a pass stick for second, holding out for the finish line. Blasting through the sand rollers to the checkered flag Lorenz took the win followed by Barnes and Wallace. 250C was a packed

gate tonight with nineteen riders showing up to the line. As the gate dropped there was a huge pile-up around the first turn. Justin Peterson was able to make it out front and avoid the carnage. Joey Fortune missed the action and moved to second and Juan Wonders made it out of the pack in third. Charging hard, Peterson was starting to make a good gap on his Honda while Austin Beaty moved into third after being stuck in the first lap crash. Beaty and Fortune were going back and forth as Peterson created a good gap on the pack. Coming across the line Peterson took the win with Fortune holding on for second and Beaty a solid third place. 50Sr was up next with some good action from the little rippers. Coming off the line Ryder Beth took the holeshot followed up by Jackson Oehlhof and Matthew Blumer. Out of the grandstand section Talan Zollers was on a mission - flying by Blumer over the hill to grab third. Up front Beth was riding smooth, starting to pull away as Zollers battled it out Oehlhof, finally finding a line and making the pass stick to move up to second. The laps wound down with everyone pushing hard as Beth kept it out front for the win followed by Zollers and Oehlhof. 250B had some great racing tonight with Nick Wallace grabbing the holeshot followed by Matthew Bates and Nick Blumer. Moving through the first rhythm section Brian Krohn passed Blumer. Right before the tabletop section Krohn blasted through the inside line taking second from Bates and closing in on Wallace who was riding extremely clean up front. most out of nowhere Robbie Hyson had been making passes left and right to make up into third on his KTM. Meanwhile, Krohn had the lead for a few turns here and there, but wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to make it stick as they crossed the finish and Wallace took the win with Hyson in third. The Pitbike stock class was a huge battle out at the fair tonight with everyone going for the win. Off the line Kevin Popaeko took

the holeshot with Brian Mckay and Brian Petersen close behind. Going through the grandstand section and back out onto the track Petersen stalled for just a second allowing Ryan Popaeko to move up to third. Mckay took over the lead, and coming around on the next lap Petersen had got back into third and was right on Kevin Popaekoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back tire, finally making a pass charging through the rhythm section. On

the final lap they came around with Petersen getting out front and starting to make a gap as everyone stayed bunched up. Coming across the checkered flag Petersen held on for the win coming back from a bad first lap followed by Mckay and Kevin Popaeko. The night out at the fair was a great race as expected. There was a great turnout especially with it being a Tuesday evening.

I-94’s Portage Supercross a winner! Portage, Wisconsin - July 24

ast Arenacross Champion Tom Hofmaster made the trip north to central Wisconsin for the annual Portage supercross a successful one. The once a year event is part of the Columbus County fair, running on a Wednesday night. Fans fill the bleachers as the fair runs in the background, and riders put on a show as they race for event and series awards... you can’t ask for a much better setting. Hofmaster was the hands on favorite in any class he entered, but it is still a race, and he was all business at the start of each class he entered. In the first event of the evening, after the heat races were all finished, Hofmaster jumped into the early lead in +30, and never looked back. It took Brad Johnson a couple laps to shake Robert Manke and secure second. They ran in that order to the end, with Eddie Smulders picking up the pace late in the race to push Manke at the end. The 65cc class put on a good show for all the fans. Out front, Aidan McCormick was getting the crowd out of their seats as he jumped the big spectator double

(stadium jump over a plateau) each lap. Behind him the show was between Trevor Allen and Justin Oehlhof. The two were bumping and testing each other every lap in a fight over second. They both had their fast spots on the track, and the fans loved seeing the little guys give it their all. Late in the moto Oehlhof found a way to get it done, and finished second while Erik Mikelson and Dylan Knoch filled the top five, all riding KTM’s. McCormick was excited after the win, “It was a lot of fun out there. I like the stadium jumps. It was awesome hearing everyone when I jumped the big jump.” Asked if it made him feel like going faster, and it was a very excited “yes”. The 85cc class was exciting as well, as the top three were essentially fender to fender all the way to the end. SE Sales/ Mom & Dad backed Noah Laedtke after wining the class. “I got the holeshot, and kept hitting the big jump and then keeping him (Eugene Wolff) behind me. We went into a turn as I tried to pass a lapped rider and he got by me. I didn’t know if I could, but I got him back right away in the whoops and then won.”

made it hard. I got by once but then he passed me back. The track was really fun, and you learn a lot out there.” McCormick finished third as Tommy Gerlach and James Schmeling were fourth and fifth. Jackson Oehlhof won the 50cc class on his KTM with Ayden

Lucas Padrutt ran out front in 14-29, and pulled plenty of moves over the big spectator jump for the crowd.

A great part of the show was put on by a group of friendly vintage riders that hit the track in an exibition.

Price finishing second. Tyler and Peyton Poker of Baraboo were third and forth. Rob’s Performance backed Oehlhof, “I really like the whoops because you could just bounce through them. The track had all these big ruts and bumps that I went through. It was all fun!” Dylan Denruiter got the jump on the 250C class with Nathan Lange sticking to his rear wheel through the first two laps. After that, Denruiter found a little more speed and slowly opened up a couple bike length lead to take the eventual win. Eric Kessenich and Kyle Green ran in third and forth all the way as Max Annen moved up to finish fifth. Denruiter was happy with his win, “It went really good, I got the holeshot and after that I just took a deep breath and focused on doing what I could to win. The track was good and a lot of fun.” His successful night continued as he won the Open C class later in the evening ahead of Lange, Kessenich and seven other riders. GNCC regular Matt Herrington took some time off from the woods to win both the Open and 250B classes on a borrowed bike. It didn’t come easy, as the Open class win came following a great three way battle that was settled with two riders on the ground in the final corner. How they hit the ground was subject to who you asked. Regardless, the crowd sure loved it, and no one was hurt, besides some bruised pride.

Tom Hofmaster took the last win of the evening in the Open A class, topping Kyle Hameister and Jason Erdman. Asked about coming up to the small fair event, Hofmaster was all smiles. “These fair races are like the grass roots of stadium and arenacross racing. I grew up racing them and it’s fun to get back to it. The intensity is there, the crowds and everything. Fair races are just hard to beat, and I go as often as possible. I’m thirty-two, and every time I’m on the bike I see it as a good thing. I love seeing the kids ride and everyone having fun out here. I also brought my trailer up to offer some support to anyone needing it. This is something new I have up and running, mxstuff4u.com is a web based motorcycle accessory and gear store. We have the trailer, and are trying to get out to the races and enjoying it all.” Just after the last bike pulled off the track, the heavy dozers and front-end loaders came out and started tearing the track down. Within a couple hours it had all vanished, spread back out for the next day’s demo derby or whatever was on the agenda. full weekend of racing, and no sign of rain in the forecast? Yes, just what everyone was hoping for when the Aztalan Cycle Club kicked off thier double header Saturday afternoon. This was going to be a great weekend, and today’s event came with extra meaning as it was dedicated as the Ron Bean Memorial. Ron was a long time family member to all the dirt track riders in District 16, and lost to us all about a year ago to cancer. For today’s event his family had special t-shirts available for everyone. Beautiful plaques were made with a photo of Ron. There were raffles and such as well, and the Aztalan Cycle Club matched a good portion of the earnings that were being sent to the Wounded Warriors Project. A cause close to Ron and his family because of Ron’s military background. The theme of the memorial raised the level of appreciation at the event.

Brett Durant had a great race in the Quad A class, finishing second.

Appreciation for past days spent with Ron, and the awareness of good times spent with each other at the races now and in the future. Never take this for granted. This was as good of a day at the races as you could ask for, and the light hadn’t even turned green on the starting line yet. When it did, the good times just got even better. With just over a lap to go, Sund lost a little drive and Busse pulled even, then past for the lead and win. Pretty cool action coming from the young riders. Fox Lake’s Jim Kirschbaum had another good night on his KTM. After winning the +30 class heat race, he jumped out front in the main. Once in the lead, Patrick Stemper and Sergius Figliuzzi tried to keep him close, but Kirschbaum was on a roll, and led to the finish. David Schultz and Tj Zeidler had a good battle over fourth. Schultz took it over early, then with two laps left he slid high while getting pushed by Zeidler. Zeidler saw the opening, and was happy to re-take his position for the final portion of the race. Kirschbaum also won the +40 class, again beating out a couple quick riders. Mike Yogerst and Michael Hunter were second and third at the end. Kirschbaum, “I was lucky enough to get a great start, and I just stayed to the inside and it all worked out. I’d like to thank Mike’s Motorsports out of Allentown and my wife for all their support in my racing.” The classics 250400cc class is always filled with a bunch of riders, and today’s crowd was representing three states. Janesville, WI’s Matthew McNall settled for runner-up spot in his heat race, but timed the light just right to edge out Iowa’s James McDermott through the first Emmett and Sydney Sund two turns. laps in. One of the usual front runners, Charlotte Kainz had to be relieved as she was near the back of the pack after a terrible first lap. On the restart of the now shortened race, Mischler got the good jump again and led the group through the first turns. Bell Helmets, Steel Horse Law, Mischler HD/BMW backed Mischler, “I got the holeshot, and then we had to line up again. I was kind of nervous on the second start, but managed to get it clean after almost hitting, I think Tj Zeidler.” Mischler had Patrick Stemper on his tail early, and even though he never had a chance to relax, he led until the end. Clayton Vonmoos and Zeidler were running well, and it took a few laps but once Kainz got into a rhythm she moved past them both for third at the end. She wasn’t the only rider on the move as Ion Steer was hard on the throttle, and using a lot of the track to make up for a back row start. Just before race end he slid into fourth after an impressive ride. Mischler wasn’t done yet, as he topped the 251-505 class ahead of Kainz, Ryan Weber and Mark Zeidler. Vintage Twin winner Robert Reese described his great race to get by the tough Mark Snyder. “I got messed up off the start and tried to power into the first turn but he (Snyder) had a good line and I settled in behind him. He was riding really well as I was going inside, then out, then back everywhere trying to get a line past him. Finally I went a little wide heading into the back straight and powered it on as hard as I could and got by, then just kept the door closed on him. The track is really coming around now and I’m looking forward to tomorrow for the second day of racing. This is my favorite place to ride, and I’m first in points so I have a lot to ride for tomorrow.” The evening ended under a beautiful clear sky, and all the special memorial awards were handed out, and appreciated by those lucky enough to get them. It had been a great day, and most everyone was already looking forward to day two, Sunday. Just the way it is suppose to be at the Azzie double headers.
