ideas on how to make this happen please forward them to me. Our MX system needs some fixing. Early season off road races are showing huge attendance numbers. The GNCC races are doing extremely well with some surpassing the 1400 entry mark. We have some district racers attending those races, but having to take so many months off of riding it leaves them at a bit of a disadvantage. Even at that they do quite well. Kudos to those that make it to a few winter events, it gets you away from the snow and cold while getting in some great riding experience. At the district level, memberships are rolling in at a healthy rate. I encourage you to get that membership prior to attending your first event as this make your entry much quicker and more efficient. As with previous years we have events in all disciplines starting in April or May. We have a full calendar which will take us through October. It won’t be long and we will be taking bids for year end awards. If you have any ideas or know of any businesses that would be interested in supplying awards get word to Leslie Vanderwerf or myself. I have been working with Alex Hunter of the AMA to get us listed as an AMA championship series on the AMA website. There will not be a Regional Series within the district this season. It worked out well last season but was extremely difficult to separate the points out by region. If you feel it was a good deal then talk to the promoters and give them your thoughts on bringing it back. We are always looking for ways to improve the package for all of the races and racers in Minnesota. Don’t forget to apply for some of the Fly Bucks that we have available. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman I hope all of you are ready for the 2019 season. We were buried in snow just two weeks before I started on this article. It’s amazing how fast we have lost 51 inches of it. If the weather cooperates we are looking good for an on time start to our season. We were all doubting whether we would be able to start the season before mid May with all the snow we got in February. Lets hope the temperatures continue to cooperate. I had the opportunity to attend several days of the Freestone Amateur Spring Classic Race outside of Dallas Tx. I did see a few of our local racers trying their luck at the National level. This race looked more like a pro MX rather than an amateur event. There was a total of seven team semis on hand for the event. It was a real educational trip for me as I had never been to one of the Major Amateur events prior to this one. It left me wondering how we can even the playing field at this level. Full factory support at the mini and B class levels. I do not have the answers as to how we solve these inequities, but we need to find some solutions. For too long the now the B class has become the goal of Motocross racers. We need a system that encourages our racers to strive for advancement, to seek the top level of competition. If you have any

John Larson Memorial Race Stanchfield, Minnesota - February 24 By Tim McBride

t Cloud, MN native Jason Larson, carved his way through the eye of the storm in more ways than one by winning the John Larson 3 Hour Ice Race held on Rush Lake located in Stanchfield MN., hosted by The Grumpy Minnow and Larson’s Cycle Inc. As many people know, the Midwest has been pounded recently by bone chilling temperatures and a gauntlet of snow storms. That didn’t stop thirty teams from competing in the annual event that was organized to help injured AFT flat track racer Brad “The Bullet” Baker. This year’s race was a virtual duplicate from last year, as a clash of the titans emerged once again between two Iron Man competitors Jason Larson and Kyle Ohnsorg. The Iron Man class requires a one man/ bike team to compete the entire three hour event without a rider/ bike change during the race. It also requires the stamina of a tri-athlete with the courage of a lion. The two combatants were soon found out front after the start of the race and the chaotic chess match was on. Larson started the race with a larger the normal fuel tank and as the race went on his race plan came to fruition as Ohnsorg’s bike sputtered to a halt at the halfway point of the race on the

ing the effects of the cold and windy weather slowing the pace a bit and was eventually caught up to by Ohnsorg who made the pass with only a few laps remaining. In reality, Ohnsorg was still a lap down to Larson, but he wasn’t sure so he picked up the pace and as the two came together Ohnsorg crashed into a drifted snow bank (one of several drifts that crossed the racing line due to the high winds). Larson then went on to victory over a quickly recovered Ohnsorg to score his second consecutive event win. “I thought he ‘Ohnsorg’ might have been a lap down, but I wasn’t sure,” explained Larson. “So I turned it back up again, got on the inside line and passed him. We were both drifting towards the outside of the turn and he got into the deeper snow and must have went down. I kept it turned up for the remaining three laps to win the race. It was a tough and rewarding race, and I was happy to help in the efforts towards the recovery of Brad Baker. I would like to give thanks to The Lord Jesus, my wife Cayla, my pit crew Jay and Maggie Hyde and all my family and friends for all their support. It’s been a fun season, but I’m excited for the next one.”

I knew he was a lap ahead at this point and there wasn’t much I could do other than keep pushing and ride my own race. Jason ran me wide mid-corner into a snow bank causing me to crash. We’ve battled in the past and he is a good guy and a clean rider so I can only assume it was a racing accident. I want to congratulate him on his victory, he rode great and ran a perfect race. Grumpy Minnow Bar/ Restaurant where a bunch of cool stuff was donated by several kind sponsors to help raise money for Brad Baker. Baker suffered a severe spinal injury during practice at the X-Games held at US Bank Stadium last summer. Recovery costs for this kind of injury is very expensive and to see the motorcycle community come together for a good cause is always inspirational. Baker’s good friend Kevin Anderson helped organized the fund raiser portion of the event. Jason Larson (not to be confused with the race winner) promoted the race and received several phone calls during the week about the possibility of postponing the event, but reassured everyone that the race will go on despite the

As race day came the temps were in the single digits and the wind was blowing, but the sun was out and the spirits were high. “Anytime you get a group like this together it’s a beautiful day!” exclaimed Larson afterwards. ways seems to go by way too quick, the mid-winter banquet is a fantastic opportunity to get together with all your friends even if you didn’t pull down one of the season’s top finishes. Yes, this is a huge family oriented event everyone can enjoy. The customized awards, new jackets and all were top notch. Food was great and the evening flew by in a well organized manner.... as it always does.

arly February... central Illinois, as a motorcycle enthusiast you may be riding at the facility in near by Mendota, chilling out at home - or you could have been part of the large crowd attending the annual District 17 Awards Banquet. When we say large, you could see the food service crew scrambling as the crowd grew to the 600 mark.... a number not seen in recent years. It really is a sign of how there’s a solid trend of riders and families looking at the local points chasing and championship efforts in a new way. Many have come to realize chasing the “national championship” events is as much of a money drain as it is a disappointment. There’s just so much value to racing here in District 17, chasing these events with many of the same families each week and the quality that brings. Quality events, close to home, with a familiar group of competitors and their families - the long term life enrichment of all that is unmeasurable. Cocktail and social time kicks it all off before dinner. Then it’s right into the awards. Gerhard and Patty Ward put as much effort into this banquet as many others combined. Those two with some significant help get all the beautiful awards prepped. It’s no surprise, Gerhard, a long time D17 rider himself and almost just as long time Motocross Director really looks forward to this banquet.

50cc class gained some national recognition. Lincoln Paxton seemed to drag dad and mom to just about every race they could get too. Like racing a Stadium event on Friday night at Jmx then heading to Galesburg Saturday, only to load up and head back to Jmx on Saturday night and return to Galesburg for the Sunday bonus point race to finish out the weekend. Four events, in three days. Some will say "why". Most will say wow - great determination

and solid effort. We found out about this at a national meeting discussing rider habits, racing processes and overall numbers. When they stated 117 entries in one season everyone in the room was pretty amazed. A little more digging and it seems there were some other local riders in the top ten nationally in participation. The Zoller boys were in there as well. These young riders are the future of AMA District 17 Motocross/ Sx racing. They bang out laps weekly having fun and learning how to earn their success on a race by race basis. Sometimes we need to sit back and look at what makes our racing in this area so solid, good and so able to stand the test of time... These kids are the example. They show that racing on the weekends matters. 2018 was greatly effected by mother nature. This was like the forty-third season of racing for myself personally and forty-five years for AMA District 17. I can't remember us getting more rain on weekends ever before. D17 Motocross and Stadium Mx tracks took a pretty solid hit in 2018 with a shining star being just a little south of center. LTM was the exception as they seemed to find a way to make it happen and did so with some solid numbers and great racing all season long. I hope for more of that success for them and the rest of the tracks in 2019. It’s looking to be a great season.” Over the past few years District 17 has seen continued growth in the Gran Prix style racing. Gran Prix Director Nick Balzer, “2018 was a decent year for Grand Prix racing statistically speaking. We had participation growth and a decent rider turn-out all year. With 2018 being my first year as a director I kind of flew by the seat of my pants and ran with what I had, and had a great time! Some of my favorite moments from this season were watching the early season points battle between Colt Converse and Blake Ryan in 122-Open and A classes. Ryan usually being the top dog in the GP

series had some competition and it was some great, clean and tight racing for both riders that truly highlighted some of the best things Gran Prix has to offer. Looking forward to 2019 we have one returning location and one brand new one. The Byron GP is back with the help of Ryan Moss, Aaron Vincer and Forest City Riders. Set for June 15th the Saturday before Byron's sprint enduro, this race will make for a great weekend! New on the schedule is Muddy Waters Motorsports in Hampton, IL. This one set for October 20th will have some of the best dirt around! I'm looking forward to seeing you all this year and thank you for a great 2018!” CYCLE USA, April 2019

Dirt Track Director Mike Bender was really happy with how many of his riders made it to the banquet. Following a good season and the banquet, he was full of optimism towards the upcoming season. Bender, “2018 was another great year of Dirt Track racing in District 17! Weather played a factor at the beginning of the season, but we still managed to run twenty-two races. Entries were up almost 17%, so that's a great trend for us! This is very encouraging and I'm expecting even better in 2019! We had some great battles across several classes, with many championships determined by less than one race. Chase Saathoff and Braiden Cox in 250cc and Justin Hittle and Josh Cecil in both 450cc and Open Amateur stand out, but there was some great close racing all season in the 65cc, 85cc and Youth Quad classes as well. Even perennial Quad champion Damon Brown was under pressure all season by Greg Watts. It was a great season of racing and I'm definitely looking forward to 2019 with a number of newcomers to the 250cc and 450cc classes! Thanks to all the riders and promoters this year and thanks to everyone that came out to the banquet! This was definitely the largest I've seen since we started racing with D17! It was

nice to see a packed house and such great participation from all the racing principles. I hope you've all had a great winter and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on April 7th for the season opener in Pekin! Quick reminder - make sure to sign up for your D17 membership early to make it easier for you and the folks at registration! Also - If you've have a minor racer, make sure you get the Annual Release from the AMA - it will definitely make things smoother through registration. Until then, keep the rubber side down!” Even one of the smaller sides of our sport, Trials competition saw a great level of participation through the season and at the banquet. “The trials awards presentation was very similar to our season in that it went off without a hitch and in a fairly quick fashion. Participation was on par with the season as well, with thirteen of the fifteen award winners able to attend to receive their award. Eight of these made all ten events during the season, proving once again that winning a District 17 Championship is no small accomplishment. Even most of our second, third and fourth place finishers in points made it to a majority of our events. Now we can look forward to an even better 2019 season. With thirteen events scheduled between six clubs from northern Illinois to as far south as White City, it's shaping up to be a great one.”

Long time Enduro Director Ryan Moss had some additional help in passing out his awards this year... from new, incoming director Ben Bradford. Moss has been a significant part of out sport for a long time, but is leaving the Enduro side of things in good shape and don’t for a minute doubt that this will mean we’ll see less of him tucking in and out of the trails at events in 2019. Moss recapped the season for us as well, “The 2018 Enduro season saw twelve events on the schedule with seven requiring no lights, and none requiring time keeping equipment with three events being the Sprint Enduro

format. The series saw the LiveLaps scoring system being used at eight of the events so riders, pit crews and spectators could see results in near real-time. One challenge this year was the weather, even causing the season ending event to be canceled due to flooding. The series saw some great events and battles as always. Thanks goes out to all the clubs for putting the events on and to the riders for making it a great season. Our Grand Champion this year was Blake Ryan, taking his second Overall Championship. Ryan had challenges all season by up and comer Tanner Whipple. Ryan and

Whipple had some up and down rides with both taking two wins during the season, but also having outside top ten finishes. When the final points were tallied only two points separated the two showing how hard they battled all year. We had some great battles in many classes. Jeff Kaylor, Eric Tjelmeland and Jeremy Smith battled it out in 30A with Jeff taking the win. Jhaydn Walker won the B class championship again but had pressure from new enduro rider Mikey Burtle. Burtle put in some great rides for a first time enduro rider, coming up only twelve points short. It was great to see two younger riders riding the enduro series. Jared Hall dominated the A class winning almost every race. Hall also represented the USA at the Six Day Enduro and brought home a Silver Medal. Greg Hunt also dominated the +50B class, winning almost every race. Welcome to the A class Greg. The 2019 season will see thirteen events on the schedule with three of them being the Sprint Enduro format. We will also have two national enduros on the schedule. Eight events on the schedule will be all off road or have permission to run on the roads so no lights will be required. And all events on the District schedule are “restart” events so no timekeeping is needed. We are hoping to use LiveLaps again at most of the events. If you’ve ever wanted to try an enduro this would be a good year to do it. Thanks to all the riders and families that came to the banquet! It was a pleasure to hand out the awards and see everyone doing some bench racing during this cold winter. Hope to see everyone at the first enduro of the season being put on by Grand Kankakee Trail Riders on April 14th. Reminder they also host a family enduro on Saturday which is all off-road and is tamed down. So bring the whole family out for two days of fun. I have stepped down from Enduro Director after fifteen years. I want to say thanks to all the clubs for doing all they do and working with me to make the best series we could. Thank you to all the riders for supporting the events and also working with me on ideas to make the series the better. Thank you to the District 17 board for helping me out along the way and putting up with me, I know that’s not always easy. Thanks to Ben Bradford for taking on the Director position. I’m confident he’ll bring some fresh young eyes and thoughts to the series and make it even better!” CYCLE USA, April 2019

Last, but not least we caught up with Jay Hall, District 17’s long time Hare Scrambles Director. Hall like all of the directors, has spent years involved with the sport and racing himself... and while he still enjoys riding and racing, puts in countless hours supporting the sport through the Hall’s Cycles dealership and his volunteer efforts in D17. Hall on the Hare Scrambles season and the time he enjoyed at the February banquet. “Weather broke just in time for all to gather for the hard earned Hare-Scrambles awards. Mother nature didn’t make it easy on us with rain outs, and mud and some real hot and dusty races - even some snow and cold conditions. The series with the best fifteen of over twenty races running from February until November found plenty of chances for people to get out to race and ride with their friends and family. We had some really tight racing with kids in the 50Sr class showing hard racing and good sportsmanship with only four points separating Copper Duff and Travis Lentz after twenty-one races. Duff topped Lentz after they swapped wins all year. And when Duff could not make a race do to a family commitment Lentz stayed home saying he wouldn’t want to win the championship unless he was racing Duff. These are some good values these parents are teaching their kids - way to go. Another tight battle was in the 65cc class with Davin Shike and Jake Hasten, as Shike took the top spot by only four points as well. Next was some bigger boys in the A class and again it came down to the last race of the year with Rylan Frankford taking the

top spot by only five points over Dustin Mc Donald, both racing a full year in a very hard and competitive class - coming from our youth classes in the earlier years. Four Wheel A class wasn’t as tight with eleven between Chris Breitwieser and Mickey Martin, but both raced the max amount of races with Breitwieser coming out on top after more really good racing. Switching gears and talking about the ladies of our sport, the D17 Women’s class was good from the drop of the flag with the class always having a full field. And with our Women’s class I have to say it’s good to see such growth in the sport - it wasn’t all that long ago that we had hard time getting the ladies out there. Last I want to recognize a rider who rode all twenty-five races, showing his dedication - Jordan Emmons of the 20B class. Emmons won races and rode all that we had. Nice work! Emmons advanced himself to the Open A class at the finale and nearly won that one, now that’s a good season. Hope all of you have a great off season because by the time you see this we’ll already be into the 2019 season. A whole new set of stories and bench racing to talk about. District 23 Flat Track Banquet Bloomington, Minnesota - February 16 By Tim McBride

he District 23 Flat Track Annual Banquet held at the Best Western Hotel on the outskirts of the Mall of America in Bloomington MN, turned out to be another successful event. Riders, friends and family were treated to a wonderful buffet, a custom baked pair of decorated cakes, a plethora of amazing door/ raffle prizes, some serious bench racing and of course the presentation of year-end awards to the 2018 flat track top finishers. The event was emceed by race track announcer extraordinaire Dan Bailey, who as always did a fantastic job. Some guest speakers were brought to the podium throughout the program where the future of flat track racing was the main subject, and it looks very bright. It was announced that there will be some new classes and a new race venue for 2019. The new

classes includes a Womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s class and a Hooligans class. The newly added St Charles, MN Short track is now a points paying event as well. The Hooligan class has been a big hit in the X Games in the past and it seems to be gaining momentum for the future of flat track racing, so if you feel the need for speed, dust off that shovel-head you have parked in the garage and come on out to a

local track near you and join in on the fun. Bauman/ Janisch Top Daytona Daytona Florida - March 14 By Tim McBride

“I knew I had a pretty good lead,” explained Briar Bauman. “I sprinted for the first five or so laps. I tried to conserve a little bit, but it was so rough.” It was a rough day for some of the customary AFT frontrunners as defending champions Jarred Mees and Bryan Smith both suffered mechanical problems during the main. “With Jarred (Mees) and Bryan (Smith) going out,” Briar Bauman continued. “It is huge for the points. It’s great to be leading the points right now!” As Johnson, factory Harley Davidson rider Jarod Vanderkooi also made his way past Bronson Bauman to finish in fourth place. Another notable no-contender was JD Beach (Beach finished a close second

last year behind race winner Jarod Mees) who crashed out of a direct transfer in his semi-final race. The Roof Systems AFT Singles main event was fittingly won by long time District 16 rider Jesse Janisch on his Roof Systems sponsored Yamaha. The Beaver Dam WI., resident Janisch, took the lead from fast starter Dalton Gauthier (KTM) and raced to victory with over seven seconds to spare. Gaulthier held on to second ahead of defending champ Dan Bromley (KTM), Mikey Rush (HON), Australian Max Whale (Kaw) and Spaniard Ferran Cardus on the Bullet Strong/ Vanilla Cycles Honda. Another interesting competitor came in the form of former AMA Supercross Champion Jeff Ward who finished a respectable second place in his heat, but wasn’t able to transfer to the main in his semi-final race.

he 2019 season of the American Flat Track Twins presented by Vance and Hines series championship began inside the Daytona International Speedway where Briar Bauman manhandled his Progressive Insurance sponsored, factory Indian FTR750 to a convincing victory on a tough and technical race track. For the first time in three AFT events held at the infamous speedway, an asphalt portion of the race track was used along with the customary infield dirt/grass section located inside the tri-oval, turning it into somewhat of a “super-moto” style course. Going from 100mph on the asphalt high banks to a dirt transformation 30mph left hand turn proved to be a bit ticklish for sure, but come main event time, much of fast riders had adapted, especially Bauman. At the start of the 25 lap main event, it was Bronson Bauman (Briar’s younger brother and teammate) out front in the early running until Briar (Bauman) made the pass on lap two and set sail for the checkers while building a huge gap on second place. That runner-up spot fell to Henry Wiles also on an FTR750 Indian who eventually made his way past Bronson near the halfway point. ith the sun shinning outside it appeared warmer than it was. Fifteen degrees and fresh snow on the ground was a reminder that winter wasn’t quite done yet as riders from across the area came to New Richmond, WI for the final indoor motocross of the season. Some were here for the shot at season-end points, others for a final chance to race and get rid of some winter cobwebs before spring brings us outdoor racing. Whatever the reason, everyone had a great day on a well prepped track. The racing started right on time and motos flew by in a well organized manner... The +30 class has pulled a good crowd all season and today ten riders lined the gate for their first moto. Exiting the first turn and never looking back, it was Thomey Dertien on his Honda. There was some juggling for position behind him through the first two laps before the running order was finally set. Suzuki rider Dan Holmes fought off Justin King and Aaron Pendergast to cross the line in second. Jason Ritt finished fifth. Moto two had a good battle out front after a few riders went down 30

in the first turn. Leading all the way, Dertien really had to work for it as Holmes and King were right on his back wheel. When it was all done Dertien prevailed for his second win of the day. Holmes after a great ride for second place, “I got an ok jump and then two guys tangled right in front of the first triple so I snuck into second. I noticed Justin King was sneaking up on me mid-moto but then he went down. It was a good three rider battle for a while, but I was pushing wind to keep it up. I haven’t ridden much so I was just trying to survive there in the last laps. These guys are pretty fast.” As Holmes mentioned, King pushed hard

for third through mid moto, but washed out on the landing of a small double, dropping back a few spots. Jason Ritt gladly took over third and finished just ahead of Matthew Voss and King. Ranger Flinchum has been doing well here this season and started the first moto of 250C off in the same manner. After grabbing the holeshot he slowly inched away from the pack to have his own race out front. Behind him, Trey Hettich had to work hard in the first laps to climb up to second place. Hettich, “It was pretty hard and tiring out there. I tried to be really aggressive around the corners to make up time and then be smooth on the rest of the track. My dad helps me do all this so thank you goes out to him for sure. I live in South Dakota and have been at all the races here this season. It was a long ride here this time with the bad weather on the way.” Izaak Farrell stuck to Hettich right to the end for third ahead of Lance Rosa. Deric Mcconnell used the last laps to advance into the top five right before the checkered flag came out.

Flinchum returned for another win in moto two. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m having a good day, pulled almost every holeshot and I got all the wins so far and this last one was for the championship... so one more to go (Open C where he also went 1-1). The changes on the track have made it a little more technical and I really like it that way.â&#x20AC;? Hettich again had to fight his way past the tough Izaak Farrell for second while Rosa held onto fourth. Deric Mcconnell again spent most of the moto working up for his eventual fifth place finish... this time just ahead of Isaac Schlauderaff who grabbed good starts in both motos. The 50cc Open 4-8 class put two divisions of eight riders out on the track... all working for a good finish and a spot in the final moto running later in the day. In heat one, Carson Wittman nailed a great start in second behind Landon Kressman. It took about a third of the first lap before Wittman hammered his way to the front. From there, he simply outpaced everyone for the impressive win. Kressman also set a fast pace for second ahead his closest challenger, Nico Trkla. Cooper Lanning looked good in fourth as Brayden Hinck moved up to fifth.

In the second heat Louis Oswald was on The 65cc 7-11 riders delivered two cona roll early, stretching his lead by the secsistent motos with Kai Morgan doing all the ond lap. Ryder Halquist quickly passed damage out front. The young KTM rider Vincent Astorino for second... then Oswald jumped out front in both motos and never stuck his front wheel hard in a rut. The fall looked back. Keeping him honest early in took him out of the moto... he was fine, but both motos was James Schaffer. Schaffer shaken up. Halquist was now in the lead had good motos, just a tick off the speed of where he rode to an uncontested win. The final merged riders from the heats into a good battle that had many parents anxiously viewing all the action from both sides of the track. Out front and not messing around right off the gate drop was Wittman. Kressman kept him in sight, but that was all he could hope for as Wittman was a little quicker all around the track. Trkla was in third early before Halquist charged past. While the laps went by a good race developed between Mason Bair, Vincent Astorino and Peter Grover. Bair got the best of the group and then moved past Trkla on the last Deric Mcconnell finished fifth overall in the big 250C class. lap for fourth.

Morgan. Cash Wilsey moved into third early in both motos to finish there. Caiden Mccoy pulled off a fourth place in moto one but wasn’t able to match that when they returned for the second moto. Having finished in fifth earlier, Elijah Anderson improved to fourth in moto two and the overall. Morgan was all smiles after his second moto win. “I got the holeshot and just held my lines and kept going. On the start I just go to second gear wide open and then shift off the start. I like the step up jump the best out there... the big one in the middle. It is awesome to win. I’ll race a lot at Millville this summer.” Austin Kienast ran off with both 15-29 Open moto wins on his Kawasaki ahead of Nick Fox. Kienast also won the first Open A class moto only to be off the pace a little in moto two as Joshua Boaz really

stepped it up for a 2-1 overall win. Boaz wasn’t done though as he won both motos of 250A ahead of Nick Fox and Jason Salvino. Lexi Dyekman made it look easy in the first Women’s class moto. Dyekman, “I grabbed a great start and got ahead right away and really wanted to throw down two good laps to build a bit of a lead. From there it was about figuring out lines and where I wanted to go in my next Schoolboy race. The track is good and there are some nice ruts and lines forming - and it is super fun right now.” Her winter training looks to be setting her up well for the time she’ll spend in Canada chasing the pro women’s nationals. Behind her, Tatum Thorud put in a solid ride with Kendra Tutt working every line while trying to make a pass. The two held their positions to the end with Makayla Peterson and Bella Johnson back just a few bikes lengths in the eight rider class. In the second moto, with Dyekman out front, Tutt turned it up enough to beat Thorud to the finish for second and second overall. Peterson crossed in fourth ahead of Johnson and Jenna Ettesudd. As the race day ended, it was still light outside... a very cool sign of longer days... warmer weather and that this terribly long winter was finally leaving us. Even with all the fun this indoor facility gives us - summer can’t arrive soon enough. I can’t imagine how long winter would feel without indoor riding - but it is time for sun and warm weather! Heavy Metal Trials Rainy cool weather outside - no problem this weekend. Mendota, Illinois - March 24 District 17 Indoor Trials

made my first trip down to north-central Illinois’ Megatraxs indoor riding facility for an event type I had never been to. My expectations were high to finally attend a trials event, and to also check out this indoor facility. Simply put, I was impressed with everything about the day. As I’m about an hour into the drive on Sunday morning, in the rain it hit me... I wasn’t looking at my phone for the radar. I wasn’t concerned about the weather one bit... how cool is that? This was a rain or shine event, under a roof. Before we get into the event, a bit of info on Megatraxs. This facility is the long time dream of Gerhard Ward and his family... they are best known for the very successful Megacross Stadium racing here in Mendota. Add to that their off-road experience

at Fox Valley Off-road, having riding opportunities available for everyone in the winter was sort of natural, but far from an easy step. The facility is in downtown Mendota... an old and very large industrial building that was deserted years earlier. Ward and his family took on the huge task of rehabing the building, one painful step at a time. With this huge effort, they have delivered what is most likely the largest indoor riding track in the midwest, maybe the country? And it has become very popular yet a ton of work. This is definitely a work in progress and not an easy path... but the family loves this sport and it shows in the facility and in the eyes of the many riders that call it “their” place for winter riding. Onto today’s trials. This event was made possible by Gerhard and Patty’s oldest son Travis Ward. He had almost three weeks invested into building eight challenging and diverse trials sections. All of it started on a The Expert riders joined those in the Champ class, taking on some really unique obstacles.

Logs, pipes, massive blower fans, huge steel things that we have no ideal what they ever were before being built into something expert trials riders could actually test themselves on. Concrete chunks, a lot of dirt and imagination and somehow you end up with today’s course. Travis was quick to thank D17 Trials Director Eric Miller for his help in setting up the varied lines each section needed... a week long process as well. As said earlier, I’ve never been to a trials event. Ive been to every other type of event, but this was all new. My eyes were wide open right from the beginning. Seeing the kids work around twisty paths and well designed little obstacles. Mid-level riders take on their varied lines and then the experts and champ riders doing things on bikes I would never think of... it was very cool. As a motorcycle rider, racer or family member to one reading this - do yourself a favor, go to one of these events. You will enjoy it, I assure you. the different sections waiting their turn to ride... and having fun watching, supporting each other... sharing in the success, and at times lack of it. This was like a big family that anyone can come and be part of. One of the riders taking on the day’s toughest challenges was Greg Sassi. The things he was expected to try on his motorcycle in the Champ class seemed crazy, but he went right at it all with the biggest smile you can imagine. It wasn’t hard to see he was having a good time. Sassi, “I’m having a lot of fun riding here today... it is great that Megatraxs puts on this event for a third year running now. It is a good early way to get the season started and get some of the muscles loosened up a bit as well. They have everything from the outdoor section to metal railway ties to riding up onto a truck bed. They definitely set up a great set of lines for each skill level where the beginners are having fun, and yet there are sections to challenge even someone like Pat Smage. I’m riding in the Champ class and some of the challenges are a little intimidating to me yet.” Asked how he takes on some of the most difficult looking obstacles, Sassi continued, “There’s times you have to simply go for it. It really is a matter of picking it apart, going one section at a time and doing your best.”

Tom Littlefield has been around Trials riding for a long time and we were happy to get his take on the day as he was on his way to topping the Vintage class. Littlefield, “Megatraxs being an indoor facility brings man made obstacles which is tougher because there’s no forgiveness in anything. This is a ball though and today I’m on the Vintage bike. I’m with a first timer today so it is fun schooling him through it all and seeing his reaction to everything. I love trials and would always like to see more and more riders out enjoying this. This isn’t an easy sport. I personally like all natural stuff outdoors but I’m very thankful they put this on for us as it is a lot of work. A conventional trials is probably easier - but they challenge you here and that’s what trials is all about. Whatever class you are in there’s a challenge and it is all about having fun.” Expert class winner Jesse Wellenstein after making it half way through his second of three loops through the eight sections.

“Today has its challenges for sure and as we bring some of the moisture in from outside some of the dirt is getting slippery on the concrete but this is all set up really well. You can read all the lines perfectly and that’s a lot of work. It was a great effort and there’s a great group here for it today.” Also asked about approaching some of the harder obstacles that were almost scary to myself as a spectator, Wellenstein had some good insight, “As you get started in trials and develop your skills you start with the smaller logs and such and learn your limits. The key is to just keep moving forward and keep your mind set right and you’ll have a great day no matter what class you are in. There’s guys here with motocross bikes on the novice line so there’s something for everyone. Obviously a trials bike would be the most fun, but a lot of say motocross guys hone their skills in the trials world. It will make you a better and faster rider.” Unlike some of the long term trials riders, Nick Manning stood out

a bit as his eyes were just a little more wide open than many of the others in the Intermediate class. Manning, “This is my first ever trials event so today has been really fun. It is great coming in here and getting into it. This is tight and really technical obviously. I grew up racing motocross and always thought this would be fun. It is like rediscovering the entire learning curve again. It takes you back to very basics of balance, clutch, brake and throttle control so it is really fun. This is a good mix of tough stuff with everything they have in here then when you get outside it adds an all new twist being wet and riding in the old oil tank. I’m having a total blast doing all of it.” Manning was on a used to him Trials bike he bought about a year earlier. Kelly Rickgauer finished fifth in the ten rider Intermediate class and was all smiles as he worked through the different sections as well. Rickgauer, “This is the first time I’ve done an indoor event and my second season riding trials so when you come into this place and see the obstacles they’ve set up it is really amazing. To be an intermediate and have the challenges they’ve put together is great. I’m not making them all, but making a few and having fun trying either way. The lines like the experts are running you can’t even imagine getting to that level, but as you ride more and more even after six months you’ll already be doing things you didn’t expect at the beginning.” The entire day here was outstanding. Icing on top of it all was delivered by none other than Pat Smage. He’s sort of a home grown hero in the trials world and for good reason. ohn and Greta Martin once again secured the Event Center at Treasure Island Casino to hold the annual Super

Series Awards Banquet at the end of October, 2018. This year there were thirteen rounds of racing of which riders had to attend at least seven to be eligible for yearend points and awards. Series sponsors donated some goodies for racer distribution

and there were a couple of bikes to be awarded per luck-of-the-draw. Guy Ohland was retained as acting host for the event with support from the Quinns, Scott Cripps, et. al. Also of note were a number of special awards to recognize a few outstanding individuals. John and Greta took a fall vacation trip, rumored to be their first in 36 years, as they journeyed to Europe and scurried about the continent on motorbikes. Unfortunately, when they made it back there was bad news about the awards for the banquet-not yet arrived. A FedEx overnight delivery and emergency awards-completion operation was launched the night before the event and almost certain disaster was averted, thanks to the heroic efforts of the club members. First up on the nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s schedule was recognition of military members, active and vets. Next was presentation of plaques to those who attended all thirteen of the seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s races. Hardcore racers, eh? The Ironman award for the season went to Josh Boaz who had an amazing year, topping the charts in three classes. Josh won every moto that he finished- fifty-seven wins total. Outstanding domination. Next up was recognition of Extreme Medics EMS for 10 years of providing emergency care for Spring Creek racers. Thanks to Dennis and crew for all the years of quick response. Guy then rolled into the points awards for all the various classes with some draw-

ings for prizes mixed in with the presentations. Here is extra note of riders who managed to capture more than one class championship for 2018: Carson Wittman (50 Premix 4-6 & Oil Inj 4-8), Tanner Schlegel (65cc 10-11 & 7-11), James Clough (85cc 9-11 & 9-12), Jayden Clough (Supermini & Schlby 1), Josh Boaz (Schlby 2, 14-24B & 250B), Pat Donaho (+40A & +45A), Ben Adamson (250 & Open A) and

Casey Paider (250 and Open C). Following the conclusion of the points awards attention went to the drawings for the new bikes. Fingers were crossed and breath held while the drawing for the winner of the 65cc KTM was held. This bike was provided by long-time racing supporter Larson’s Cycle and the extremely lucky winner was Jason Frohlich! Next up was a sporty KX250 courtesy of Plainview Pow-

ersports, which was picked up by none other than the fastest girl in Iowa- Linkin Sarauer.
