We’re thinking photos that capture a memorable moment... someone with their first trophy, a group photo of you and your friends in the pits. A graduation photo. A cool photo from a mud race. Maybe there’s a track worker deserves to be recognized. An adventure ride with a couple friends out west, and you get a cool shot in some scenic setting. A banquet championship photo. Action not required. They don’t have to be on the track photos.

Mason Willige Memorial Climb Cayuga, Indiana October 6 By Bud Northrup Photos by Gordon Green

T

he Pleasure Riders dedicated their last hill climb of 2013 to Mason Willige, a much loved and hard working club member who passed on after a lengthy battle with cancer last summer. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and appreciated him. The “Saturday night” portion of the season ending double header was rained out, but the club successfully ran a doubleheader event on Sunday. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner was the fastest rider in the Saturday event with ‘Jammin Joe’ McGurer taking that honor for the Sunday Willige Memorial version. Joe is a grandson of Mason Willige, and it was truly fitting for him to claim the Fast Time Award at the hill climb dedicated to Mason. He noted that he tried extra hard because it was “Grandpa’s race”. Joe started hillclimbing at age seven and is now eighteen. From the beginning, he had his father, Todd, and both sets of grandparents, Mason and Anna Willige and Les and Pat McGurer strongly supporting him, all attending nearly all his races. Todd, Mason and Les joined the Pleasure Riders club and became valuable hardworking members. Mason continued to work and contribute to the club until he simply couldn’t any longer. Fortner was a double class winner in the first event, winning the Senior (+40) and Open Stock classes. He claimed his Fast Time award with a 3.800 second time on his first ride in the Senior class (older isn’t slower), overtaking Matt Peters who turned in a 3.834 second time to win the 600cc class, just barely quicker than McGurer’s 3.857 second run. Peters was Fortner’s closest challenger in the Senior class with a 3.845 second time, giving him the second, third and fifth fastest times of that event on his way to a triple win event. ‘Jammin Joe’ was a double class winner in the Willage Memorial segment, taking the 250cc and 600cc classes. His 3.727 second time on his first ride in the 600cc class was good enough to both win that class and set the Fast Time of the Day. Matt Peters was second again with a 3.789 second time, on his way to his second straight triple win performance – adding the wins in the 450cc, 600cc Four Stroke and Senior classes to his second place finish 8

CYCLE USA, December 2013

in the 600cc class. The Peters family had an incredible weekend with dad Matt and son Levi taking a total of ten class wins. Matt and Levi were both triple winners at the first event, with Levi winning the 85Sr, 125cc and 200cc classes. Levi repeated his Senior Mini win in the Memorial race. The Bell brothers, Derick and Jacob, also had very good days, claiming five class wins between them. Both were double class winners in the Memorial race, with Derick claiming the 65cc and 85Jr class wins, while Jake took the wins in the 125cc and 200cc classes. Derick won 85Jr class in both events, and his winning times of 4.598 and 4.554 seconds were also good for the Youth Fast Time awards for both events. In other youth action, Gage Stear claimed the 65cc class win for the first event. Stear is the reigning National Champion in the Junior Mini class, and finished second behind Derick Bell in that class in both races. The Shafer family enjoyed a four win day with dad Steve taking the Super Senior (+50) class in both events while daughter Lauren did the same in the Women’s class. Lauren’s younger sister, Shelby, took second and third in the Women’s class.

O

ne week after the cold, muddy/ slippery mess that was the rain soaked, penultimate round of the 2013 Staples Hare Scrambles, racers and spectators were relieved to wake up to crystal blue skies and cool temps on the morning of the final round of the District 23 series in the picturesque rolling hills of the Minnesota farming community of nearby Mazeppa. The Hurricane Hills MX Park played host to a race that would decide who would be champion in many classes. The most anticipated race of the day would decide who would don the 2013 AA Class championship jacket at the annual banquet. The Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club prepared a most fun and very challenging course for the bigger classes, that put rider skills as well as resolve to the test. The course had at least a little bit of everything. Riders experienced some river-bottom riding, some very rocky dry stream bed sections, a stream crossing, rocky, moss laden, wet slippery log in-

Women’s class winner and 2013 Champion Mary Schreiner.

fested first gear crawling gullies, high speed grass track, motocross sections, skirting the edge of cornfields, all with plenty of elevation changes. With the perfect amount of moisture in the soil to provide good bite, and the mercury rising into the middle 50’s, the racing was sure to be a real treat. The first race of the day was the Premier class. With the class leader Collin Maynard helping out to staff the event, that would open the door for the rider who has been nipping at Maynard's heels all season (Colton Reschke) to stand atop the podium of the final race of the season. Reschke raced to an almost two minute victory over second place racer Jarrett Loegering. Alex Tweeton rounded out the top three. A little later in the day, Reschke also took the victory in the Junior class. A good day, indeed. Before the race, Maynard indicated that next year would see him competing on a Yamaha YZ125 in the B class. In the Macro class, Travis Illies completed fifteen blazing laps on his KTM while Charlie Siebenaler crossed fourteen times to secure second place. However, in the championship points race, the positions would be reversed, with Illies coming up only five slim points behind Siebenaler at season’s end. Cora Reschke rounded out the season third in

points. In the Women's class, Yamaha mounted #911 Mary Schreiner and KTM mounted #213 Kristi Grote locked horns in a race long battle that remained close. The gap between them was seldom more than ten seconds with Schreiner never crossing the scoring barrels more than five seconds ahead of Grote. On the last two times through the scoring loop the computer monitor showed Grote to be only two seconds behind Schreiner on her two stroke steed. After just over one hour and eighteen minutes of intense wheel to wheel excitement, Grote came up only two agonizing seconds behind Schreiner, perhaps the longest two seconds of her life. The victor and the runner-up were all smiles at the close of the 2013 season. Grote happy to enjoy support for the 2013 season from Parts Unlimited, Larson’s Cycle Center, Check Point Off-Road Suspension and Moose Racing. In the Open C class, #451 Jaime Forslund won the race today, but won the season title four races ago as he absolutely dominated the class in 2013. In the race Forslund won by twenty-eight seconds over Adam Tacheny with third place rider Michael Lund on a Honda. In 200B, the race for the top step was a real rock-n-roll affair as eventual race winner

Travis Illies pulling a disappearing act in the Macro class for the win. CYCLE USA, December 2013

#924 Derrick Ruggeberg would complete lap one in second place with Trevor Archibald on point and #231 Chaz Herzog in third. Lap two saw Ruggeberg take the lead with Herzog in second and Archibald third. The last (fourth) lap saw second and third positions get re-arranged. So, the finishing order was Ruggeberg, Archibald and Herzog rounding the top three, with only five seconds separating them. In 250B, the top three finishers were the only racers in the class to complete five laps on the eight plus mile loop. Third place finisher Logan Cipala actually led the race for the first 24 miles (3 laps) of the 40 covered. On lap four Cipala had a incident that relegated him to third, and allowed the #310 Honda of Joey Buchta to take the point, and Colton Koster to slot into second. Koster completed the first lap in seventh place. The season championship however went to Koster, who finished the nine race series only four scant points

astern of Buchta. As the AA class lined up for their race, all eyes on the #11 Honda CRF450 of Dylan Debel and the #63 Husqvarna of current D23 champion Nate Ferderer. With only two points separating them, the heat was on both racers. Although Debel confessed to feeling the pressure, he didn’t show it with his performance. Debel has struggled with his starts all season, always having to make up time. At the drop of the green flag Debel gave a textbook lesson on how to get the party started. Bending his Osseo Motorsport’s/ Checkpoint OffRoad Honda CRF450 into the right hand first turn with the Checkpoint Off-Road owner Matt Stavish bar to bar, the race was on. Stavish was all over Debel and Dylan knew that Stavish meant business. Coming out of the woods and onto the moto track, Debel could see title contender Ferderer over his shoulder and knew he was on a mission. Try as he might, Debel

10

CYCLE USA, December 2013

just couldn’t shake Stavish and he knew that Ferderer was on a high speed rail. He knew that the race was going to be won by the rider that would make less mistakes. The one to make a mistake was Stavish, and Debel finally broke away. On the third lap, Debel pulled into the re-fueling area and his pit crew went to work “like a man on fire”. Time in the pits for gas - seven seconds, in and out! At the beginning of the third lap Ferderer was eighteen seconds adrift, but mounting a charge. At some point on lap four Ferderer had a nasty get-off that would end his race. Yamaha mounted #94 Kyle Nelson threatened to snatch the first place gold, but Debel would have none of it. He turned up the wick just enough and remained mistake free till the checkered flag with Nelson only two seconds behind. Fifty three seconds

later, Stavish crossed the line in third. Stavish was understandably proud to be on the podium, and even more happy that the bike that was ridden to the championship, and the season runnerup, were on suspension personally tuned by Matt, himself. The waving of the checkered flag marked the close of another successful hare Scramble Season in District 23. A huge thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors that helped to make the 2013 season a resounding success, given the almost late start to the season (due to late winter snowstorms) and a couple of races that were held in monsoon like conditions. To put on a race is an enormous undertaking, and all the racers are grateful for the workers who contribute so much time to continue the sport in MN.

Wentland, Williams Stand Out Millville, Minnesota - September 29 By Rolfe Otterness

J

esse Wentland and Zack Williams pounded out many motos and traded wins at the Spring Creek Park motocross track on this final weekend of September. Wentland edged out his rival with wins in the 14-24A and Open A class while Williams topped 250A. These two riders were flying, but they weren’t in the points battle as they have been pursuing pro careers this summer. A bunch of the other riders were in contention for championships in the Spring Creek Super Series, and this was their last chance for points this season. Those riders putting in some extra special effort included Josh Boaz who won four classes, including 65cc 10-11, 65 cc 7-11, 85cc 9-11 and 85cc 9-12, an outstanding performance. Devin Stang ran strong to take Supermini and 85cc 12-15. Tanner Schlegel wrapped up wins in some 50cc classes and Bruce Gates and Henry Miller each took two classes. Blake Raskovich proved to be the quickest off the line and swept through turn one with the lead as the Open A class erupted into action. Brennan Myers was in close pursuit as they sped through the first few turns and headed into the whoops. By the end of lap one Williams was up to third with Nathan Kohnke and Wentland behind. Raskovich did well to hold onto the lead for another lap with Williams behind. Wentland jumped past Myers as they hit the finish line tabletop. Williams went for the lead on the next lap and Wentland also nipped Raskovich to move into second. Wentland pressured Williams until on the final lap when Wentland washed out his front wheel and fell briefly. Raskovich took third over Myers with Luke Peters in fifth. Nick Jackson grabbed the lead right off to start moto two with Myers and Wentland close behind. Wentland drew alongside Myers then finished off the pass at the top of the uphill triple. Williams was also in the mix and by the end of the first lap Wentland had taken the lead from Jackson, and Williams had surged by for second. Wentland ran strong the rest of the moto with Williams trying in vain to get close enough for a pass attempt. Myers and Jackson had a good battle over third in the second half of the moto with Myers finally securing the position. Luke Peters rounded out the top five. Ben Adamson stormed out front in the first Schoolboy moto with Josiah Hempen and 12

CYCLE USA, December 2013

blake Raskovich (730) grabbed the holeshot in Open A over brennan Myers.

Travis Prier in tow. Adamson was running strong and pulled a bit on the battle behind him as Hempen and Prier scrapped. Later in the moto Hempen finally cleared away from Prier and closed some on Adamson but it was too late to matter. Adamson took the win with Hempen, Prier, Austin Anderson and Blaze Best in the top five. Adamson pulled another holeshot in moto two but Hempen had plans which he executed nicely, pulling up on Adamson and taking the lead by the end of the first lap. Hempen then led the way to the checkered, taking the win by a good margin at the flag. Prier held third in the first half of the moto but crashed on the pro hill, losing a few positions. Best gratefully inherited third which he held to the end with Anderson and a recovering Prier taking fourth and fifth. There was a good battle in the 250C class moto one between Chase Becker and Jordan Frericks. Becker finally got a bit of space on the last lap to take the win by a few bike lengths. Mickey Bender, Nathan Browning and Mason Persha went on to record third, fourth and fifth place finishes. Matt Hendrix snared the start honors in moto two but Persha grabbed the lead

early on with Frericks taking over second and pressuring. Persha did manage to gain a gap of about two seconds over Frericks in the second half of the race and held that to the flag.

blaze best took third in Schoolboy 12-16.

Becker ended up the moto in third after a battle with Bender that lasted until the last lap. Travis Bartylla took fifth, topping his first moto score of sixth. Josh Boaz had a stellar day in the 65cc 7-11 class as he surged out front in moto one and built up a good lead by the checkered. Gavin Janovsky ran well to take second over Ethan McMahon and Conner Klemenhagen. Gavin Tilford was fifth and very close to Klemenhagen as the moto ended. Boaz was out front to lead through turn one in the next moto and started immediately to gap the field. Tilford settled into second with Klemenhagen and McMahon in pursuit. At the end, Boaz had the win with a big lead. Tilford was a bit lonely at the flag in second with a bit of a battle to the checkers between Klemenhagen, McMahon and Gage Krech. Another Fantastic Big Woods 200 T Wabeno, Wisconsin - September 28/29

he Wabeno Dual Sport rides are far from new, yet every year you’ll find just as many smiles, and happy riders as ever. The Big Woods 200 has become somewhat of a benchmark for other events to measure up to, and for good reason. Started by the Madison Motorcycle Club 13 years ago, and then carried forward by the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders (many of the same members). This is sort of an all-inclusive event for the gritty riders that seem to never get enough. Never get enough good riding, or enough of riding with great people. Enthusiastic riders can start covering miles in the area on Friday, even before the official ride begins. A good map, or a little help from a club member at the downtown Wabeno ride sight, and you are good to go. Friday night you can find fellow riders in any one of the small dining/ beverage establishments, or around the large camp fire in the parking area. Saturday starts early with a riders’ meeting, and then off to tackle roughly 140 miles of back country blacktop, gravel, dirt two-track trails, and the famous hero sections. Hero sections are all optional... all rideable, but legendary fun parts of the event for sure. Almost all of the hero sections are on private land, made available to riders just for these special events. The club members have a great relationship with so many local families that some of these land owners have actually been offended not to get asked for access to their property over the years. It is common to see the land owners come out on lawn chairs, and wave to riders as they come and go. The club goes to great effort to maintain these valued relationships... and stresses that at the morning meeting. Impressive thing about this group of riders... they really get it, and appreciate and respect the special opportunities to ride here. Every year we see some of the fastest motocross guys from the past at these rides.

A classic group of past racers that still love to ride, and have found dual sports to be a perfect fix for their addiction.

They’ve invested in a dual sport legal bike just for the great riding and fun offered at the now half dozen regional events held every summer. Events that before the Big Woods 200, didn’t exist. A great benefit of the bar being raised so high in Wabeno is that these “newer” events are all quality rides. Mix in all the enduro, hare scrambles and other racers, plus a bunch of trail riders, hard core dual sport and adventure guys, and the variety makes for an awesome group. Best of all, beginners have just as much fun here as anyone! Perfect example, Chris Maeder who made the trip north from Madison for his first ever dual sport event. Chris rode his 2012 KTM 990 Adventure to the event, and then took on the challenge with the big beauty of a bike. “The event is great. The hero sections are a little tough for my big bike, but all the rest of it is totally rideable, and obviously the gravel and open roads are great. The event is very well organized, even more so than I expected.

This billboard welcomes riders to town, talk about community support.

I’d tell anyone with a bike capable of doing the ride to come do it... with the thought that they still need to know what they are doing. You have to be able to ride off-road stuff, but with some experience, you are good to go. I use to race back in 1975, and just bought this bike so I was looking to try this, and I’m so glad I did.” Half way through the day everyone stops for the area’s annual VFW Chili Cook-off at an area park. This is yet another perfect situation to mix all the riders in with a wide range of locals, and it always goes over really well. The riders love it, and the charity efforts have come to depend on their attendance. Once again, everyone is always smiling, and the parking lot of is full of motorcycles. During this lunch break we caught up with Green Bay’s Tom Kalies (owner of Team 2 Racing). Kalies is a long time racer, having a bunch success in motocross as well as off-

road over the years, and this was his first time at a Wabeno Dual Sport. “The club asked us if we wanted to come up and put some of the new bikes on display. I usually send one of my guys, but I hadn’t done the event before so I thought it would be a great opportunity to come out and try it myself. I’m having an absolute blast. It is a really well run event with a great group of guys. The single track is amazing. I didn’t expect they would have as much technical single track as they do, and it is well mixed in with road and other trails to give you a little break between sections. Some of that trail is as good as any enduro loop you would ever hope to ride.” Asked about what sort of bikes would be good for the event if a rider wanted to come out, “Basically anything you have that could be or is street legal. I’ve seen early 2000 model bikes up to the newest stuff right off the showroom. There seems to be a lot of Suzuki DRZ400’s, and obviously a lot of KTM’s.” After lunch it is back to more riding, covering the second portion of the day’s route. More

good stuff, more beautiful fall colors, smiles and good memory making. It all concludes back in downtown Wabeno for the famous steak dinner that is part of the event fee. Drawings, raffles... a few adult beverages of choice, and a night of reliving the day’s ride. This year the rain pushed through Saturday night, and added a good amount of moisture for those tackling the second day’s route on Sunday.

Diehards will go ride no matter what. For many, even half way through Saturday’s route they already knew one hard day of fun was enough, and planned on sleeping in before a good breakfast and the trip home Sunday. The Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders club president Mark Charlton gave us his thoughts on the event Saturday afternoon. “It is going great! The weather is fantastic, and we have the best bunch of guys you could ever ask to ride with. This year’s trail in

general is a little faster than years past, and the hero sections are fantastic. I’d say enduro quality sections so even the A level enduro guys won’t be disappointed, and yet the riders that just want to motor out there and have fun, the trails are set to make that possible as well.” The club’s Spring ride is held at this same location, but with a heavy emphasis on supporting a fund raising effort. Charlton, “We encourage riders to get pledges and sponsors as we are looking to raise money, but it is also about coming out and having a lot of fun. The Spring ride runs different hero sections as the grass isn’t very long, and the trails are always in great shape. Riders just need to go to our club’s web site for information, register and then come out to ride. We donate the proceeds to the Carbone Cancer Center because we know the money is going right to the research work vs overhead. We raised close to $21,000 this year and that put us over $110,000 in seven years. John Newton is really the heart and soul behind that getting started, and all those in the club, and the riders make it possible. The really big thing is if a rider

can’t get pledges, they should still feel comfortable coming to the ride. A lot of the money raised comes from auctions and raffles done right at the event, so there are plenty of good fun ways for everyone to make a contribution because of the sponsor provided items. Big thing is to register early, as the rides do fill up quick.” Club member John Meisser described the event as well. “Wisconsin's Big Woods 200 is a bucket list event again! Bucket List designations are usually reserved for once in a lifetime events, but that is what we come to expect each September in Wabeno. Once again, 2013 did not disappoint. You see, we ride off-road motorcycles and the weather is not a major factor because we're out there whatever. What makes the Big Woods 200 so special is just being there. Wabeno is one of the most friendly places for off-road enthusiasts ever and this has been cultivated over many years and the hard work of the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders. You can always recognize a dual sport rider - they're 18 year old kids trapped in older gray haired bodies with a permanent weathered smile, full of fantastic stories and oh yeah, just try to keep up with them in the woods. If you're still wired for motocross or other racing weekends that's great, we'll still be here when you're ready.”

beautiful colors are always a perfect backdrop for this event. John Montgomery rode here Saturday, and took the same bike to a D16 hare scrambles on Sunday.

Great Finale at Sunset Ridge

Colten burk went 1-3 for second overall in the twenty-five rider 250C class.

Walnut, Illinois - October 20 By Josh Rud, More photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

The gates opened for the last race of the season for Sunset Ridge MX in late October. It has been a great year at the track, seeing a lot of improvements and many events going over really well. Today was a great day to be out at the park with a bit of the cold starting to come through the area, and the leaves changing. A bit of a reminder that the winter will be John Perovic had a great day for third overall in 65Jr.

here soon and everyone will be stuck looking forward to next year. The races went along smooth as ever with everyone coming out to get their last bit of motocross points for the district, and get some good riding in. Today’s race was in memorial of Nick Hoffman. His family started the "Dream your life, live your dream" foundation for riders, mechanics, and supporters of motocross who are dedicated to the well-being of the sport. Ian and Garrett Pistole were the first two recipients of the awards. Nick started out as a mechanic at a shop with the dream of being a factory mechanic. He never gave

up on his dream and traveled the U.S. working for amateurs and eventually wrenching for Michael Byrne on the BTO Sports team. He had previously wrenched for Tyler Bowers on the Moto Concepts team also. He was a great friend of Sunset Ridge MX, and was the kind of guy that'd give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. He was very dedicated to the sport which is where the whole premise of the award comes from. When the racing kicked off, 250B proved an eventful as usual, in the first moto Sam Tinkey took the win followed by Parker Smith and Damon Tatar. The gates dropped on the second moto later in the afternoon with Tinkey getting out front early with Smith and Tyler Scott chasing him down. Coming around on the second lap Tatar had made his way up to third with Tinkey and Smith still up front. Heading up to the finish Travis Prier was charging hard and took over third. On the third lap Prier took out Smith for second and went to battle with Tinkey, taking over the lead on the white flag lap. Prier didn’t finish the first moto, leaving Tinkey with the overall win. Smith took second overall and Colton Bentz was third with a fourth and fifth finish for the day. Super Mini put on a show, with everyone hungry for a win. In the first moto Ben Ibianskas took the win followed by Dylan Boyd and Dawson Biermann. The second moto got underway with Biermann getting out front as Gage Pace and Boyd were right behind him. Coming into the first jump Pace had taken the lead leaving Biermann and Boyd behind to battle it out. On a mission, Zach Tatar moved though the pack and made it up to second coming around on the third lap. Going back and forth with Boyd several times he dropped back to third, when Ibianskas came in to take

over third. After the hard fought laps the flag dropped with Pace taking the win followed by Boyd and Ibianskas. Boyd took the overall for the day with Ibianskas in second and Pace taking third, having finished seventh in the first moto. 250C came out hard today with twenty-five riders showing up at the line. In the first moto Colten Burk took the win with Jarred Berggren and Rj Mackenzie rounding out the top three. They took off in the second moto with Mackenzie taking the holeshot followed by Berggren and Burk. Coming around the sweeper Berggren took the outside to take over the lead with Burk right behind, moving into second. In the second lap Bret Holland had battled his way into second with Mackenzie holding off Burk as they came across the line. Burk was running strong, getting around Mackenzie in the hairpin moving onto the downhill. Crossing the line Berggren took the win and the overall, leaving Burk in second overall and Holland third, finishing fifth in moto one. Schoolboy was up next. In the first moto Ben Ibianskas took the win followed by Keanan Tinkey and Ian Pistole. The second moto got underway with Pistole taking off out front with Dylan Boyd and Ben Ibianskas close behind. Coming around on the next lap Tinkey was on the move, taking over third and charging ahead to catch the leaders. Pushing down the hill he got around Boyd as Jake Carlson followed, taking over third. Across the line Pistole took the win and the overall, Tinkey second overall. It was a great day of racing out

at Sunset Ridge MX, and a great way to end the season. Kaiser was able to get past Niles before they hit the plateau and crossed the finish in fourth. Wolf (1/1) took the overall with Roushia (2/2) in second and Niles (3/5) grabbed third. ztalan Cycle Club finished off the 2013 motocross season with an open ride on Saturday followed by the Randy Schuessler/ Gabe Leonard Memorial Race. The race is held in honor of two young club members that were lost too early, and involves a weekend of fun riding and racing. Ninety riders showed up on Saturday, braving a rainy day, and then on Sunday 400 entries enjoyed the final race for 2013 on Aztalan’s MX track. Dennis Roushia made his return to racing after a three year hiatus with the +25B/C moto one holeshot, and managed to stay in a solid second position both motos. Zachary Wolf slipped past Roushia before they hit the plateau on lap one and then stayed out front until the checkers flew. Brad Yde had his hands full holding off a push from both Greg Niles and Eli Siordia. Niles was able to get by, and into third just before the white flag came out and went on to cross the finish ahead of Yde. In moto two Siordia jumped past Yde on their first time over the plateau to take away third. Niles and Jake Kaiser also got past Yde in the barn section Kevin Whitford (484) and Martin just before the white flag lap. Mecum battle in +30b/C.

first moto. Brad Yde managed to take away the lead on the first lap. Kevin Whitford got by Kevin Yde in the west end but his hold on second was over before lap two started. Midway through lap three Troy Blakey and Glenn Korn were pressuring Kevin Yde. Both riders were able to advance ahead of Kevin Yde on the last lap with Blakey finishing in second. In moto two Brad Yde edged out Justin Fluger for the holeshot. Martin Mecum was in second right behind Brad Yde as they hit the plateau. Mecum went to work on Yde and by lap two he was on his way to the moto win. Brad Yde turned his 1/2 day into an overall with Mecum (5/1) in second and Kevin Yde (4/5) rounding off the podium. Brandon Marescalco grabbed the opening holeshot in Unlimited A, but Zach Coons was out front soon after, and then cruised to an easy win. Marescalco held on in second until Josh Philbrick powered past him on lap two in the barn section. Ryan Hughson also slipped past Marescalco, but despite running hard couldn’t catch Philbrick. Coons was out front at the moto two start, and after holding off a mid race challenge from Philbrick cruised to another moto win. Hughson finished third. When Non-current rounded the holeshot John Stewart was out front with Justin Fluger close

behind, and they stayed there to the finish. Alex Makar got around both Spencer Janaky and Ian Malinowski and then held on for a third place finish. Stewart and Fluger again were out front in moto two. Janaky was in third with Joseph Scheiber right behind him at the plateau on lap one, but soon Janaky was putting a gap behind him. Malinowski was on the move and before the moto was over he had slipped into third and held on to the checkers. Mike Duclos had the lead around the holeshot in +40 but Marc Ottenad was right on his back wheel and looking for a way around. Ottenad made his move in the east end and stayed out front to the finish. Now Duclos was getting pressure from Brian McCanna and Tom Dretzka. McCanna pushed hard all moto and finally slipped into second on the white flag lap. Moto two, John Stewart jumped out front down the start straight but when he hooked a hay-bale at the holeshot corner Ottenad powered past to take the lead. Dretzka settled into second with Duclos running a solid third be-

hind him to the checkers. Kirsten Raemisch edged out Jade Wennlund for the moto one holeshot in Women’s class and the stayed out front the rest of the moto. Wennlund had her hands full holding off challenges by Sierra Dortch while Dawn Cox battled with Bryanne Wolf over fourth. Midway through lap two both Wennlund and Dortch went down, leaving the door open for Cox to cruise to a second place finish. Tammy Flemming found enough room to slip past Wolf and finish the moto in third. Raemisch got the moto two holeshot and once again immediately set off out front to the finish. Wolf settled into second as they headed into the west section. As lap two began Dortch was pushing Wolf looking for an opening. Dortch was able to move past and then Cox slipped past Wolf before they hit the plateau that lap as well. In 250B, the moto one holeshot went to Justin Wolf but Tyler Lowe was right there on the inside challenging at the corner. Lowe continued pushing Wolf but by the beginning of lap two he had Tylor Skodras right on his rear wheel, and Maxwell Malkmus was close behind in fourth. Skodras slipped past Lowe on lap three. Wolf dropped back out of contention in the west end on the white flag lap and Skodras was able to open up a gap out front with Lowe in second. By now Jamison Duclos had worked his way back from a mid pack start into fifth on his final trip over the plateau. Duclos continued his charge and in the final half lap got by Lowe and Malkmus to grab a third place finish. Skodras didn’t waste any time in moto two as he rounded the holeshot out front and cruised to the win. Lowe and Wolf were battling for second while Joshua Jensema was running fourth. Duclos once again got a bad start and was fighting through the class as he jumped into fourth just ahead of Jensema. Duclos cut his way past Wolf and Lowe, finally settling into second. Jensema finished in third

passing Lowe on the white flag lap. Skodras, “I haven’t raced since last month when I knocked myself out. In the second moto I was able to get the holeshot and then checked out , it was a good race. In Open B I had another bad start but I was able to come from fourth to first on the first lap. In the second moto I cut under Timmy Baake in the holeshot and led it from there to the finish. Right after Mini-O’s in December I am going to A class and hope to do a couple Arenacross events in the pro class. Hopefully I can get

MX-TECH MXT/SFF KAYABA PSF AIR FORK CONVERSION Motocross Action Magazine, “The creativity of MXTech’s MXT/SFF fork conversion, works great. We spent a couple days testing and racing with both the KX450F and CRF450 conversions, and the difference was night and day. The MX-Tech forks were plusher, didn’t spike at the end of the stroke and were ultimately more tunable. The MX-Tech MXT/SFF setup created the best Kayaba PSF forks we have ever tested, with the caveat that they aren’t actually Kayaba PSF forks after MX-Tech is done with them.” A copy of the full article is available on our web site at www.mx-tech.com. Father versus son fun at PRMC Cayuga, Indiana - October 19/20 By Dave Henry Photos by Phyllis Blume

This late October weekend marked the final two rounds of motocross at Pleasure Riders MC, with the Sunday being District 17 bonus points. The second race of the day was a combined moto that featured 14-24 racer Chance Trigalet and +30A racer Eric Trigalet. Trigalet always has his starts dialed in, and this moto was no different. He rocketed off the line on his Coffman’s Truck Service/ ShopBigwheel.com/ Tom Zont Racing backed Honda 450 with the rest of the field chasing his rear wheel. Falling in line behind was another Honda 450 piloted by the “Italian elbow” of Zeno Molteni, Kirt Monk and the Honda 250 of Chance Trigalet. Molteni soon dropped out of the hunt and he was nursing a sore knee and was playing it safe. The younger Trigalet soon was on the #306 Eric Trigalet holds off son charge as he made his way around Chance in their combined moto race. Molteni and eventually Monk, setting his there just wasn’t enough room before the next sights on dad, Eric. At the halfway mark of switch back and he had to shut it down and the moto, Chance was all over the rear end of maintain second. Chance was now clear with Eric looking for a way around. The father, the lead and Eric backed it down into cruise son duo have completely different riding control. While this was battle was going on, styles that made it fantastic for spectator Kirt Monk was slowly creeping up on the viewing, and extremely difficult for Chance back side of Eric and as they approached the to figure out a way around. Chance was all final few turns. Monk was able to take over over the front of the bike, up on the tank, chest the lead from Eric and win the +30A moto. against the bars, head over the front fender In other moto action, it was the Gerling and on the rev limiter like “Bam Bam” Barcia. Construction/ Honda 450 of Jason Gerling Eric on the other hand, still has the classic two taking the win in +30B/C with a 2-1 score stroke riding style of sitting more towards the rear of the bike, sliding the rear end in and out of corners in what reminds me, of a mid 90’s LaRocco style of riding. Either way, both, were highly effective and flying around the Pleasure Riders track. As the white flag was getting ready to come out, Chance made a nice outside, inside pass around Eric as they approached the finish line jump. Chance took over the lead, but Eric wasn’t done as they approached the left hander after the finish line jump. That corner of the track was nice and shaded and the turn developed multiple deep ruts. Eric has always been able to rail the ruts and he did just that, as we went to make a move around Chance on the outside, but #173 Paxton Kerber and Gage Noblitt battle for the 125 class overall.

over Jason Shreeves (3-2) and Ron Lewis with a 4-3. First moto winner Brad Adams, finished fourth overall due to taking the wrong gate drop in the second moto and finishing seventh in the moto. 250C was an amazing race as Chance Trigalet took the moto one win over the Honda 250 of Hunter Wilson. Coming home in third was Bryce Cox. Moto two was a different story as Wilson took off with the holeshot and Trigalet was left in about sixth or so after the first lap. Trigalet did all he could to catch up to Wilson, but it wasn’t meant to be. Wilson was on fire and went on for the win and overall with a 2-1. Bryce Cox rounded out the podium with a 3-3. The 125cc class saw a great battle between the top two in the district championship hunt with the Huskys of Paxton Kerber and Taiga Judd competing. At the end of the day the real battle came between Kerber and Gage Noblitt as the two swapped moto wins. Kerber went on for the overall with a 2-1 score over Noblitt with a 1-2. Judd rounded out the podium with a 3-3. Open C was another stacked class as Trigalet, Wilson and Cox were set to do battle again. Pleasure riders continued on page 27 CYCLE USA, December 2013

Plainview National Hare Scrambles

Plainview, Illinois - October 5/6 By Kylie Kelsall

O

n October 5th and 6th WFO hosted the Plainview National in Plainview Illinois. People from all over the United States attended the event. Since Plainview was a National, races were lengthened and points were doubled for WFO. Plainview had many obstacles for riders to tackle including log sections, creek crossings, huge hills, and intense competition. On Saturday racers had warm, humid weather with some rain. Sunday delivered clear skies, but also had a large drop in temperature. The riders overcame both track obstacles and weather problems to have a great weekend. In the 65 beginner class Patrick Wessels

(30) took first with Easton Morgan not far behind. Carson Tippie battled with competitor Parker Townsend before Tippie crossed the line in third. Ben Wright (418) dominated the 85cc(711) class. Behind him TJ Nees scored second. The 85cc (12-15) class had a great day with Tanner Whipple taking the win just ahead Hayden VanCuren. Colten Zuidema finished third. When Whipple was asked what he liked most about the race he replied without a problem, “The tight woods!”. In the Supermini class Cody Barnes dominated his competitors as Michael Burtle and Dalton Garecht finished out the day in second and third. All C class races took place on Saturday. In 200C Matt McDonald finished off his season

Jeremy Carlyle crossing one of the creek areas in Quad C.

with another first place. Dominick Wright took second and Tyler Dwyer third. Dwyer said in his opinion the most challenging part of his day was coming from a last place start, and having to work in the mud and rain back up to third place. By far his favorite part of the race was the sandy creek beds. 250C had a great day with Kristofer Emmons taking the win ahead of Alex Loveless and Patrick Dillon. In Open C Neil Irwin, Colton Brough, and Jordan White filled out the podium. In Women’s C, Cassidy Brown and Annelisa Davis battled for win, before Brown grabbed the advantage late in the race. In 200B, Jarred Hall seized first place while Blake Ryan and Tanner Rusk battled for second. 250B held great competition between Dalton Brough and Wyatt Barnett. Brough and Barnett were only a minute apart in the first three laps. During the final lap Brough pulled ahead, creating a gap between him and Barnett. In Open B Cody Toal and Brad Glasnovich battled for first. The first lap they both came in at 46 minutes. Second lap they also came in with the same time. By the fourth lap Toal crept ahead making the space between them a little over a minute. In the 250A class, racers Drake Lineback Andrue Remley, and Tyler Ferraris captured the first three places. In Open A Tim Murphy grabbed the win. Murphy was also the A overall winner. AA rider Jedediah Haines had a great race beating out Shane Klimek and Spencer Burke for first. Quads were last to race, but finished off the day well. In Quad C, Cale Wiseman took first while Jeremy Carlyle finished second. Ryan Brinker took first over Bryan Bunge and Scott McDaniels in Quad B. During Quad A, Riley Brueggeman and Jerrid Thomas battled for first with Bret Harris in third, finishing in that order. Saturday and Sunday were both great days. Riders got to experience the challenge and

thrill of a National Hare Scramble, tackle obstacles, and ride a great track. WFO would like to thank the land owners, for it would not be possible without them, and the riders for making it such a great race weekend.

+30C rider Craig Reed works through some of the logs on Saturday.

Pleasure riders continued from page 25 Chance Trigalet had his start dialed in this time and was untouchable. He went on to a 1-1 sweep. Coming home in second with a very solid 2-2 was Hunter Wilson ahead of Cox. Other fantastic performers on the weekend were multi class winner Jason Gepford, as he had his KTMs singing around the track, taking wins in both 85Sr and Supermini. Brennan Wages and Jacob McGee dominated the 65 classes, Hunter Savage dominated the 50 classes and in the Quad bonus points battle, it was Keegan Waggoner taking the overall win over Ryan Mangold with moto win swaps. These two came into the weekend neck and neck for the District championship. Overall, the weather was beautiful and the Pleasure Riders crew did a great job of track prepping and running an efficient program. Ryan Moss won the +30 class before heading off to an Enduro the next day.

Wedron, Illinois - October 19

G

ran Prix racing in District 17 is still relatively new, but with each event, it is growing, and becoming more popular. Having been to a couple of these events over the last few years, I’ve never met a rider that wasn’t having fun, and excited to do it again. These are diehard motocross riders, the best of the hare scramble and enduro group, all the way to the other side of the experience level, including absolute beginners. The courses are designed to be rideable, and mix in a little challenge from all the disciplines. There are two longer motos giving you a lot of

Top three in the 85cc class; Tanner Whipple, Garrett Ward and Jonah Geistler.

track time, and usually around ten classes, with several ran together, so it is a short day. One of the final events in the 2013 GP Series was held at the popular Wedron, IL facility, Fox Valley Off-Road. They have a smartly designed moto track... a bunch of woods, some fun hills, and a grassy area all mixed in, and with perfect fall weather, it was a great event. No dust, no mud, the right temps, and a bunch of riders with the mindset of having fun, and that they did. Don’t

think this isn’t racing... it is, and there’s still that serious side to it, but with a different tone. At least once we saw a rider get stuck on a log, and a competitor slow, just to smile, and then race on. Sort of a rub it in, and enjoy the moment sort of thing. The fast riders were here... like Ryan Moss and Travis Ward from the off-road circle. Motocrosser Tony Spizzirri, and even in the youth classes like 85cc-Supermini winner Tanner Whipple. As we talked with them, they all were excited to be racing this event. Kicking the day off in the 250cc class, Ryan Moss led the way. Moss, “I got the holeshot and led early, then Travis Ward came up on me and he’s been riding really well. I let him by and just tried following him, and had a good race out there. The course is open, and there are some fun hills with the usual good mix Gerhard puts into his GP’s.” Ward rode well out front, and went on for the win as Colton Beard settled into third. Blake Ryan fought for fourth, getting the edge over Greg Rogers. As Ward, Moss and Beard pulled a repeat in the second moto, Rogers turned the tables on Ryan for fourth, and fourth overall. Ward also won the first Open class moto, but jammed his knee in the second moto, and Grant Bodmer was glad to take the win and

Nathan Ming going to seventh overall in the Trailrider class. CYCLE USA, December 2013

overall as Ward dropped back. Rob McGee finished ahead of Jesse Keith in each moto to complete the top three. Moss didn’t go home without a win of his own... topping the +30 class in both motos. Rob McGee finished second behind Moss each time. Steve Perkins was third in the first moto of the fifteen rider class, but settled for eighth in moto two. Luke Kaszynski found his stride, and went 6-3 for third overall. The Trail Rider class is great for new riders, and even C riders that don’t want to mix it up in the other classes with more experienced riders. The top couple spots were well fought for in the eighteen rider group, in particular for the win. It was a good show for the spectators scattered around the course, and when it was all done, Jacob McCarrens topped both motos just ahead of Spencer Neurohr. Randy Anderson and Casey Shatters were third and fourth each time out. Doug Propper went 5-6 for fifth overall. Brian Roland won both motos of his Vintage class ahead of Mark Caballero and Ed Howard, and was all smiles after. “It was a good race, and it is drying a bit so the corners are getting a bit soft, but I got the race lead

early. It was a great way to finish off the season. The GP stuff is a lot of fun. I really like mixing it up, and do a little stadiumcross and everything, just trying all the avenues. I would recommend anyone gives this a try.” Team Babbitts/ Mom and Dad backed Tanner Whipple had to settle for second behind Travis Ward in the first 85cc moto, but came back hard in moto two. “I passed Garrett at the top of the hill in the second lap, and just moved from there.” Whipple is a little shy, but when on the track, he is all business and always a threat. Ward went 1-2 for second overall. Jonah Geistler (4-3)

Gavin Sienkiewicz won both 65cc motos.

finished third overall, and took a run at Ward near the finish of moto two, riding really well with little prior woods experience. Geistler, “as a motocrosser this is definitely different. To me the woods seem really tight. I’ve done this once before, and it is just a lot of fun. Another big difference from motocross is how quick the corners come up. I’ll do it again for sure.” Blake Ryan won the first moto in 14-29, and had his shot at the overall until Tony Spizzirri put together a great charge from the back of the pack in the second moto. Sunrise Powersports/ Decal Works/ Fly sponsored Spizzirri, “The track was so different in practice, I didn’t expect things to dry so quick. I ended up second in the first race, and in this last one I was able to get the win. I couldn’t get the bike started quick on the line, so had to work my way up in the first laps. This is my first GP, and really my first time off a motocross track, so to ride through the woods as fast as I did is really cool. I’d say for any moto guys out there, they should come do this as it is a great time, and riding here is a ton of fun.” Kimberly Chandler had a good day in the Women’s class, sweeping both motos in style. Gavin Sienkiewicz also won both his 65cc motos, and in front of a dozen others riders.

Later in the day we asked District 17 Gran Prix Director Ryan Moss how the series was going. “The GP’s have been getting a little bigger each year. We had a few events get cancelled with weather issues, but riders are starting to see this isn’t the tight woods, or big jumps, it is a mild mix of it all. There are a couple more clubs looking at running them so there will be enough events for a good series again next year, without being too long. Cool thing is we have year-end awards for the top riders, and with say ten events, it is a series anyone can compete in and shoot for a year-end award.” It was a perfect day... ending on time as usual, and just before a light shower moved through to help the Fox Valley Off-road crew get the property ready for the next day’s hare scrambles. If you haven’t made it down for an event, or even some of the regular open riding... check this place out, you’ll be glad you did. Martin returns to Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - Oct. 13 By Rolfe Otterness

A

lex Martin made a rare appearance at his “home” motocross track to help wrap up the 2013 season, and launch the 2014 Spring Creek Super Series. Martin is usually off living the privateer pro life, training in South Carolina or Texas, or at one of the nationals. He very rarely makes it back to the Spring Creek track for any of the non-national races. This was the last race scheduled for this year and he made sure that everyone got an idea of the kind of speed it takes to run in the nationals as he was smokin’ fast in the 14-24, 250 and Open A classes. He wasn’t alone in

having a good day as Wyatt Mcgrath and Josh Boaz each had three wins in their respective classes and others topped two classes. As mentioned previously, this race counted towards the 2014 Super Series points and many riders were riding in different classes and some more were on different bikes. The day warmed up nicely after a cold start, with the track in good shape. Over 500 entries made for a very competitive day. Tanner Oetting fired his Suzuki off the line to lead the 250A class around turn one. Alex Martin was close and struck quickly to take over the front position. Martin began to gap the pack immediately while

Alex Martin shined on his home track.

CYCLE USA, December 2013

Phil Maus edged by Oetting to take over second. John DeOtis was busy trying to fend off Cole Hood in the early moto slogging but Hood slipped by on lap two. Martin ended up with a strong win and the order held steady behind him for the second half of the moto. Oetting snared the Linder’s Specialty Co. holeshot money again in moto two but Maus took

Izaih Clark (83) and Aaron boatman in Supermini.

over the lead before the end of lap one. Martin also got by and took off after Maus, whom he displaced on lap two. Martin ran off again for the victory with Maus and Oetting reprising their first moto finishes of second and third. Charlie Wise improved his finish from seventh to fourth after moving up from midpack. Hood got by Brandon Stewart on the last lap to secure fifth.

Gavin Wilkins took off to lead the Junior 14-16 class as they pulled out for moto one. Wilkins was runnin’ hot out front with Sam Wise and Collin Reinhart settling into second and third. Wilkins amassed quite a large lead as the moto proceeded and took a big win. Wise and Reinhart maintained position for the duration with Brady Miska and Jordan Braaten filling in fourth and fifth. Wise came out strong and led lap one in the next moto while Wilkins and Nick Schnagel disputed possession of second place. Wilkins poured the coals to it and at the end of lap two made a pass at the top of Collarbone to take control of the moto. Wise maintained his grasp of second to the flag. Schnagel ran well for third with Mason Marty fourth over Reinhart. Supermini moto one started out with a quick dash to the front by Alex Ingalls. Josh Boaz has been running strong lately and he got by early and started to build a lead. Ingalls was looking solid in second with Austin Griffin and Aaron Boatman in pursuit, but he crashed after completing lap two and dropped back a couple of spots. He quickly remounted and charged back into action, with Izaih Clark taking advantage to move from fifth to second in only one lap. Boaz took a solid win with Clark good for second at the end. Ingalls managed to get by Boatman on the last lap for fourth with Boatman and Griffin trailing him across the line.

Clark jumped out front early in the next moto but Boaz put the hurt on him near the end of lap one. Ingalls, Griffin and Boatman were in the hunt just behind the two front runners. By the end of the third lap Boaz had already pulled out about ten seconds and he went on to take another tremendous win. Clark circulated for the duration in second place with Ingalls unable to displace him. Boatman secured fourth with Sommer Mills capturing fifth in a pretty solid ride.

LTM Rider Appreciation Event

Kirt Monk and Ryan McClain having fun.

Casey, Illinois - October 26/27 By James Pinckard

W

hat a fun weekend!!!! Great, cool fall weather welcomed riders to the 2013 Rider appreciation party. Lincoln Trail Motosports did a great job providing not one, but three great tracks to ride on! Saturday the riders got the privilege of racing on the Classic track. This is the “old” track with great history and it is

The Fly Support rig stood out.

CYCLE USA, December 2013

always fun to ride. The downhill triple is still one of the best jumps, and track features that I have ever seen. If you haven’t raced this track... just go do it. Saturday night the races moved to the Pit Bike track where around eighty entries went after it. There were all kinds of bikes, riders from many age groups and they all had a great time! Thank you Drew! In addition to that there was free food for everyone who came out and

no one went away hungry. They had drawings and prizes all weekend giving away a Fly helmet, a generator, washer and many other items. Fly Racing was on hand with their rig having their items on display along with long time AMA Pro James Povolny. James said “Fly Racing wants to get out to the grass roots of racing and show the riders that we are here to support them and let everyone see our products.” JM Racing suspension Illinois was also on hand with their support truck. Matt Borgic said, “We like coming out to support this event and I will help any rider set up his bike with sag and settings regardless of whose sticker is on the forks, free of charge. We will do work at the track and want to do more than just provide shop service, we want to be out there and help tune the suspension after the work has been done.” (I had Matt set up my 2013 Suzuki RMZ 250, and I can tell you he made a huge difference and that is just on stock suspension!) The hay ride wagon was full of kids and families most of the night, taking rides and having a great time, and the bonfire was huge! After everyone went back to camp there were monsters in the pits!! Trick or Treat that is. Many kids went around gathering their candy and enjoying

being kids. Sunday morning welcomed the riders to the Bomber track. This track is much different than the Classic. This is fast, and built by former AMA national champion Mark Barnett who raced the Classic track many years ago and is from Illinois. One of the fun things about this weekend is the costumes. Two riders with great costumes were Kirt Monk who was dressed as a clown and Ryan Mcclain as a big pink gorilla. Saturday’s 250A moto one was all Kawasaki rider Travis Eck who took the moto win. KTM rider David Howard finished second with Honda rider Brady Neys third. In the second moto Eck again took off with the lead to win the moto and overall. Things were shaking up behind Eck and when it was all done and said, Howard was second for the moto and overall. Neys finished third. Monk finished fifth for the moto and overall. In the +30A class first moto Kawasaki rider Jeremy Smith took the win. Honda riding clown Kirt Monk took second for the moto with Kawasaki rider Bill Grothaus third. In the sec-

Steve bell was the winner of a new generator.

ond moto Jeremy Smith again ran off with the win. Second for the moto and overall went to JM Suspension/ Husky rider Shawn Kelly. Third for the moto went to Andy Brown which was good enough for fourth overall as fourth for the moto went to Grothaus, giving him third overall. Honda rider Randy Peek finished fifth overall. In +30B it was all Yamaha rider Brad Adams who took both motos and the overall win. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Jonathan Wiley finished second with Shane Cole third. In the second moto Cole finished second for the moto and overall. Third went to Honda rider Jason Gerling, but a crash in the first moto left him thirteenth overall. Third overall went to Wiley with a fifth in the moto. How did the big pink guy do? He got twelfth both motos in the biggest class of the day. Sunday on the Bomber track the +30A was no funny business with Kirt Monk on the gas taking both motos and the overall win. Second both motos and overall was Husky rider Shawn Kelly. The 30B class had Brad Adams again bomb the rest of the pack, taking both moto wins. Honda rider Jason Gerling made it through the first moto without a crash and finished second both motos. Next year mark you calendars, get your costume ready and come race this event, and most of all, HAVE FUN!!! rossroads welcomed the riders on Saturday for a prepped track practice along with a bon fire, hay rides and free food. What’s better than free food? Getting to ride a new bike that’s what. World of Powersports hosted the Jason Raines Yamaha Demo Program. With this program you get to ride any of the new 2014 bikes you want, ranging from the TTR50 to the new YZF450. What a great deal and there was a line all day for the blue bikes to hit the track for a test ride. Jason Raines is no stranger to either riding or Yamaha. He’s a six time AMA National Hare Scrambles champion and a former factory Yamaha rider. When asked him about the program he said, “This is the third year for the program and to date we have done 8,235 demo rides this year. Being he added, “Kenda has been an important part of had a big wheel it put him in the SuperMini the program and we have all the models of class. SuperMini and the Mini 1 had the same gate and when it dropped it was Kawasaki rider Brody Beck who was out front and hauling the mail! This kid was putting in lap times faster than some of the big bike classes. Beck went on to win both motos. Behind him it was a pair of Honda four-strokes with Justin Hooper taking second. First time racer Nick Miller took third. He did have a great battle with Kawasaki rider Daltyn Brewer who finished second in the Mini 1 class. The winner of both motos in the Mini 1 class was KTM rider Adam Funk. The 14-24 class is quick. These riders are the prime age to learn and advance their skills. Yamaha rider Skyler Harkless showed just how fast this group can go, taking the first moto win with Honda rider Andrew Seales second, Travis Ditch in third and Honda rider Harley Kunkel fourth. Moto two went to Harkless ahead of Seales and Ditch as the top four were in the same positions. Crossroads keeps making changes to the 85cc rider Daltyn brewer track and working hard to improve the dirt

,and provide a great track for the racers. With things like the Yamaha demo rides being there, they are really going the extra mile for their racers. If you haven’t been there in a while, next season load up and head to Crossroads for some great racing. Plus if you see Raines and Yamaha are going to be at a track near you GO!! Geneseo Enduro Geneseo, Illinois - Sept. 28/29 By Kylie Kelsall

T

he Springfield Armory Silver Dollar Off-Road Extravaganza was held on September 28th and 29th. Sunday’s enduro was ran throughout Geneseo, Illinois. The racers met with large logs, creek crossings, and huge hills. They had a warm and wet weekend for racing as well. The enduro was set up so riders would enter the woods in groups of four or five riders at a time. In the C class Eric Piening took first with Michael Morse and Michael Freeman close behind. Lee Ernst brought up the fourth place position. Jared Hall dominated the 200B class. Schaffer Finney pulled second and in third was Tanner Rusk. 250B had great competition between Steve Febrizius and Ryan Blasdell. Febrizius managed the win with Stephen Wilkins riding well for third.

Paul biggerstaff of the +50 class hitting the log just right.

250A had a good race as well with Cody Emery taking the win. Tyler Heitzler finished second ahead of Bren Rashke. Dustin McDonald won first in the 251+ class. Giving Thanks District 23 – 2013 Cross Country Season

he days are shorter and colder. The dirt bikes have been washed and parked in the shed for the winter. Now, instead of spending weekends sitting around the campfire with our dirt bike friends talking about everything dirt bikes, we will sit indoors, in front of our fireplaces talking about everything dirt bikes. At least that’s how it goes with our circle of dirt bike friends. Our friends are like family, and it’s pretty cool that we all share the same passion for riding. I think back on this past racing season and realize what a blessing dirt biking has been to our family. We have established some great relationships with landowners, community members, small businesses and dealerships, all who often go out of their way to support us and this sport. Have you ever needed parts and had someone from your local dealer go out of their way to personally deliver them to you so you could go on that trail ride, or get to the line on time at the 44

CYCLE USA, December 2013

next day’s race? Yes, we have formed some very great relationships. And for that, we are all very thankful. Our sport wouldn’t be what it is to us without community and friends. As our season comes to an end and the holidays are fast approaching, I want to take the time to express how much I appreciate the “giving” spirit of all of our supporters. Thank you for making this sport more than just racing on weekends. I want to share a thank you from earlier in the riding season that we were personally touched by when the Norsemen Motorcycle Club made a generous donation to the Princeton Fire and Rescue Department. The PFRD is a volunteer fire department that was on hand at the Cambridge Hare Scramble (June 2013). They offered their rescue services, ensuring that the Hare Scramble was a safe event. Thank you to the men & women of PFRD for offering your time & equipment to support our sport. Later in the summer, we learned that the daughter of our

fellow dirt bike family, Russ Theis and Tina Rahlf, was diagnosed with leukemia. Jim and Jodi Kittock and Roger and Evelyn Radunz graciously stepped up to organize and host the “Ride for Madison” dirt bike workshop and riding weekend at the Radunz property. AA riders Matt Stavish, Tim Nienow & Adam Barlow volunteered their time by leading the various workshops, teaching riders of all ages different techniques to improve their skills. This was a huge show of how the families of our sport come together to support and help each other out. We’d like to thank the Kittocks and Radunzs, AA riders, motorcycle clubs, businesses and all of the families

that came together to help make this a successful event. These are just two examples that we were honored to be a part of. We realize these shows of support and coming together are happening in other areas of our sport, too. We want to encourage other riders and clubs to reach out to their community for support and to support each other. Thank the small businesses who supply you with parts and the dealerships that help you choose the perfect bike. And most of all, spread the word and share your stories. It can only confirm what a great group and great sport we all belong to.

pring Creek’s Greta and John Martin wrapped up the 2013 motocross season in style as they hosted the Super Series Awards Banquet at Treasure Island Casino. The night was complete with all kinds of entertainment, from the witty (nutty?) commentary of the master of ceremonies Guy Ohland, to special awards and prizes, plus of course, the championship plaque presentations. The casino was a great place to wrap up the season with a great meal and plenty of entertainment

turn one: 100%, Motorex, Feine Tune, Vaith Cycle, 180 Decals, Dunlop, Thor/Parts Unlimited, Mazeppa Area Jaycees, Plainview Powersports, JB Pallet, Linders Specialty Co. and Digital7. Also recognized were Dale “Beer Man” Preble, Deb Richter-Klindworth and the Mazeppa Area Jaycees for all their support. All the military vets were invited up for a picture, and given some recognition for their contribution to our country. The main purpose of the night was to reward the racers for their successes in the class championships. Most notable this year were Josh Boaz and Chase Becker, who each managed to capture three number one plates in their classes; 65cc 10-11 and 7-11 plus 85cc 9-11; and 14-24C 250C and Open C respectively. Boaz will be moving up to contest 85s more exclusively and Becker will be hammering the B class motos next year. Other riders with multiple championships included Travis Prier, winner of Schoolboy and Junior; Tim Zebro capturing 25A and 30A; the kid from Vegas, Kirk Lewis, winner of 45A and +50; and Luke Peters walking off with 250A and Open A. Congrats to these riders and all the class champions. Class champs received personalized jackets courtesy of Spring Creek Park while VRM provided hoodys went to second and third place finishers. Other goodies were provided too help of series sponsors, those mentioned above and othbryce bernloehr was the recipient of the ers like Rock River Power-

value after the presentations were complete. One of the first special awards presented was for perfect attendance. Twenty-nine true enthusiasts made it to every Spring Creek round this year. Not so easy to do when there are so many things tugging a person this way and that. Kirk and Kara Lewis received a special Traveler award for making it to Millville all the way from Las Vegas for most of the races. That adds up to a lot of miles. The 50cc graduating class was honored as they are ready to move up to the 65cc bikes, and hit the big track next year. Good luck to them all! Next, KTM cash was awarded to those riders scoring third or better in the series on the pumpkin-hued bikes. Recognition was given to the holeshot cash sponsors for helping to urge the A classes on in

sports, Dunlop Tire, Vaiths’ Cycle, 4MX Graphics, Kahler Grand Hotel and Mototees. Rounding out the night were the drawings for two motocross bikes to be fitted with graphic kits by Black Diamond MX Graphics. The first bike was a KTM 65 provided by KTM in conjunction with Larsons Cycle of Cambridge. Seth Carpenter of Shakopee, MN was the lucky recipient of this bike. The second bike was a KX250F from the showroom of Plainview Powersports. Bryce Bernloehr absconded with that beauty to make it a night to remember.

Dirt Riders Oakley Charity Event Oakley, Illinois - November 3 By James Pinckard Photos by Phyllis Blume

P

erfect fall weather welcomed 125 riders to the 21st Dirt Riders charity event. This year Big Brothers Big Sisters received $2,000 and a pickup full of toys! It’s great to see what the dirt bike community can do to help those in need. Not only did they show a kind heart, but they got to ride on perfect trail conditions with friends for three hours! This event had many classes, both Ironman and Team. Even though this is a “fun” event, don’t tell those that rode because many were on the gas, and flying through the woods to do their best, if for nothing else to beat their buddies. The day started with the Pee Wee, 65 and special classes on the short course while the Mini and Women were on the main course. In

48

CYCLE USA, December 2013

the 65cc class Teegan Dowers took the win with Dylan Daugherty second and Christianson third. Rollonda Johnson finished her first Hare scrambles and woods ride going eight laps on the course. On the big course the same time was the Open Mini and Women. The Open Mini was all Jason Gepford on his Halls Cycles backed machine. Second went to Kaleb Cloyd with third to Michael Burtle. Susan Greek won the Women’s class. With the morning classes complete, it was time for the big bikes. The dead engine start is always fun to watch and at Noon the first bikes fired up and headed off into the woods. The best racing of the day came from the Team A class. Three hours is a long time. When you have a class that at the finish the top three are only minutes apart, its great racing! When the riders left the start it was anyone’s guess who would come out first. At the end of the first lap it was the team of Janus/

Stuenkel with the lead. On the second lap the team of Kaylor/ Westlake took over the lead and held onto it until the fifth lap when Janus/ Stuenkel would reclaim it. Janus/ Stuenkel would not surrender the lead the rest of the race, taking the overall win. The team of Southard/ Kershaw hunted these guys and on lap nine made the pass into second where they would stay for the rest of the race. The B team race was another close finish; the top two were 48 seconds apart at the end of three hours! Early in the race it was the team of Walker/ Griffiths leading until lap four when the team of Lombard/ Tool took over. They looked to have the lead under control until lap ten when the team of Locher/ Edwards took the lead. On lap twelve Lombard/ Tool made the pass for the lead but by lap thirteen Locher/ Edwards was back out front. Wow now this is great racing. Lap fifteen took Lombard/ Tool to the front for the rest of the race taking the win. Fourth overall for the whole event came from a class you might not expect. The senior class of Tanner England/ Rodger Strong put in an amazing pace to win their class. Thank you to all that helped with this race, it takes lots of people to score, set up the course and everything else. Thank you to the riders who came out, raced, and donated toys and money for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Next year dust off your bike and head to Oakley and have some fun!

D16 Hare Scrambles Finale Wisconsin Rapids, WI - September 29

N

o one wants to see a racing season come to an end, but if it has to happen... best you can hope for is a spectacular day to close it out. This is exactly what the riders got at the 2013 Hare Scrambles finale in Wisconsin Rapids. The Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club held the event at their Dyracuse Recreation Park clubgrounds on the final weekend of September. Fantastic weather... sunny, just warm enough, fall color on the trees, and a good amount of rain the night before made the sandy facility as good as it gets. Smiling club members welcomed riders as they entered the park in the morning, while others ran around the woods repairing some of the trail markings that had been torn off by the storm the night before. It all came together just right, and the racing kicked off with the Women/ 65 and 85cc riders. Amy Fischer has been racing all summer in the Women’s class, winning a bunch, and stretching a good points lead for the championship. She rode well again today, but Monica Jazwiecki was determined to shine and took the top spot. After leading through the first lap, Jazwiecki slowly opened a lead that held through the five laps. Jazwiecki, “It went really well out there. It was my first time here, and I love the course they set up. There’s a wood bridge in the back that gave me some trouble a couple times. It was slippery, and I spun around once as I was

brock Lueschow on his way to third in 65cc.

battling with number twelve (Autumn Czappa riding in the 65cc class). I would fall, then catch her again, so it was fun. We were together for like three laps. I’d like to thank my sponsor... my father Mike Jazwiecki, he’s the head crew chief as well, (laughing).” Third place 85cc rider Reed Eggum, “It was kind of muddy, and there were some wet sticks in some areas so I fell a couple times. I made a lot of mistakes so it was tough for me, but it was still a good time.” Autumn Czappa won the 65cc class, finishing in an hour twelve minutes, the only

rider on a 65 to make the five laps. Czappa, “My race went good. I fell a couple times, but it was still good. I like the straight-a-ways the most, as they are pretty fun. It was pretty muddy, and any of the logs were wet so it was hard going over them.” When the first group of big bikes hit the course for thier race, C class rider Nick Jackson was quick to set a pace no one else in his class could keep. He pulled almost twenty seconds on Trey Waage in the first lap, then Waage dropped out. By the second lap Aaron Sirko, John Podoll and Marko Lazarevic made up the top four, where they held to the end. These were also the only riders finishing four laps on the now expanded track. Jackson finished almost five minutes ahead in the hour ten minute race. Club member Nick Jackson, “I just tried to ride my own race, and not crash. This is pretty much the only place I ride. The track was really nice after the rain last night. All the usual whoops and such.” Running at the same time, the +50 class put on one of the best shows of the day with a lead change each of the four laps. As they worked into the top three overall, there was only a few seconds separating the top two +50 riders. District 16’s 2013 +50 class champion, and eventual race winner, Keytime Motorsports backed Brad Kortbein, “John and I had a great race out there. We swapped the lead every lap, and I came out in front at the end. The rain made it perfect, and you couldn’t have asked for a better battle. The trail flowed really well, typical Dyracuse rough for sure.” Country Sports Hon/Suz’s John Montgomery finished second after the close race, and was totally pumped about it all. “It was an awesome today. Todd and his crew did a

great job out there, and they included a lot of new stuff that just added so much. We got a good pace going and it was a fantastic hour of racing. Brad and I hooked up early and it was a lot of fun. He got past me for good when I went down in a muddy section. I rode the Wabeno Dual Sport yesterday, then today I rode my same bike up to the gas station, gassed up and raced instead of working the course. It was just too nice of a day not to.” Later after the A class finished, Twin Air/ EVS/ Keytime/ Moose backed Frank Caballero, “The start was pretty tough... I washed my front tire out in one of the sand corners and was near the back. I charged ahead and got to the lead. Still made some mistakes, but I was ahead enough.”

Mark Sheppard and District 16 President Todd Ellingson were close most of the race, fighting over second. After the first lap Sheppard was ahead by about a minute, but Ellingson reeled him in to about ten seconds with two laps left. Sheppard, “he (Ellingson) just showed up behind me there at the end, just before we hit the moto track, and I know he is quicker there so I just held a good line to the end.” Ellingson, “The first three laps I had major arm pump, and wanted to just give up. Half way through the two hour race I finally started to feel good. I wish I had one more lap. It was a good time and I got close at the end.” (Five seconds to be exact.) Fourteen year old Mason Amerling rode his ‘96 Kawasaki KX250 to the B class win, finishing six laps in just over two hours. “The forks on this thing were just killing me and Dylan (Kobel) caught up to me mid race. I tried to pull away a little and it worked.” Kobel finished second, exactly what he needed to do for the season championship, winning by nine points over Amerling. Karl Lueschow won +40, completing six laps in a dominating performance. “It was a great ride, and I really got into a great rhythm on the second lap. I struggled on the motocross track a little, but even that wasn’t bad. I really like everything out there, the trails were great.” AA winner Jd Friebel after finishing seven laps. “I didn’t get my bike started right away off the line, but made quick work of moving up as soon as we got into the woods, into second behind Mat. I followed him for two laps before I got around, but my bike kept stalling and then I would make a mistake. We got next to each other and rode most of the motocross track side by side before he swapped really hard and I got ahead.” From there Jd pulled about two and a half minutes. “The course was awesome, there’s nothing better than moist sand. I’d like to thank Moose, Keytime, Husqvarna/ IMS/ Vesra Breaks/ EVS/ Pirelli/ Smith and Bell Ray.” Mat Herrington finished second with a pretty good gap on Chuck Garetson in third as Eric Mischler finished fourth. Herrington and Garetson were the only other riders to complete seven laps. With the sun shining, and the season ending, a number of racers and families hung around the pits enjoying those few extra minutes before heading home. The Rapid Angels did a great job, and closed the season out right. Until next year, have a good and safe winter. Year-End Party for Woodstock Series byron, Illinois - October 13 By Jo Utech

O

n a perfect October day, at Motosports Park in Byron, IL, the Woodstock MX Race Series held an end of season event. It entailed open riding, lunch, KTM demo's and an award ceremony.... then back to more riding. They hosted a great season send-off! The day began at 10 AM, but five raffle winners were already announced from a post on Facebook much earlier! Throughout the day, more raffle prizes were awarded. Doug and Dan Jackson and the staff from Woodstock KTM treated their racers, as well as anyone who just came to ride at Byron, to demo their inventory from the store. It was a big hit! Everyone was switching bikes up! The awards ceremony was held under the pavilion. Dave Deringer was the MC, and as always, did a fabulous job. He made sure all the sponsors were recognized and thanked them for all their generous support during the 2013 race season. The "holeshot award" contributors got a special shout out. Also thanked, were all the volunteers that helped with races and all the racers who attended the series! Awards were presented to the top three in each class, with the winner receiving a personalized plaque, with their picture printed on it. After the awards, everyone went back to riding, raffle prizes were given away, more

demo rides and bike swapping! At the end of the day, I had a chat with Doug Jackson, and he wanted to thank everyone for their support and looks forward to a great year in 2014.
