T
he nineteenth of October marked the last race of the season for Sunset Ridge MX, and it was a great day for sure! Today was the second annual Nick Hoffman Memorial race, with one lucky rider receiving the Dream Your Life-Live Your Dream Scholarship Award. The award this year went to Noah Picard for his dedication and hard work. The fall weather was setting in with those hoodies coming out and the track having some great lines forming throughout the day. Being the last race of the year the turnout was great, with everyone going for the last minute District 17 points to iron things out for the season. The day started with 250C up on the line to get things started. In the first moto Klayton Fox took the win followed by Alex Funk and Derek Brueggert. Eighteen riders came off the line for the second moto with Jimmy Epifanio getting out to an early lead with Funk and Daniel Beck right behind him. They were at each other’s side through-out the first lap, as the #215 of Fox was making his way through the field to take over third coming into the start of the second lap. It was a battle up front with Epifanio holding them off when Fox made a break for the front, taking an inside line to come out of the turn sitting in 6

second with Funk holding onto third. Fox continued to chip away at Epifanio as the laps ran down, unable to make a pass. Epifanio took the win ahead of Fox in second and Funk. This gave Fox the overall, Epifanio second with a fourth place finish in the first moto and Funk third overall going two, three. 65Jr had a great turnout today with the riders of tomorrow getting out there and showing everyone how it’s done. In the first moto Krystian Janik took the win with
#22 Andrew Gapen fights for position in the Quad C class. He went 1-5 for third overall.
Chicago’s John Perovic rode well for third overall in 85Jr.
Wyatt Mattson out of Bolingbrook IL second and Anthony Edgerton rounding it out in third. The gates dropped for the second moto as the pack squeezed through the first turn leaving Mattson out front and Janik and Luke Jackson in the hunt. They battled up the hill with everyone staying close, and nothing sorted out yet as positions were changing back and forth. Hitting the first jump Mattson was still out front with Janik
close behind. Edgerton was looking for a line around Jackson and stuck the pass into the second without looking back. As the laps wore down Mattson and Janik had changed places several times. Hitting the finish line Mattson stuck it out for the win, taking the overall with Janik second overall and Edgerton a solid third overall. Open A was a great race today with Joey Dalzell, Jonathan Six and Vaughn Mays out there really pushing each other hard. In the first moto Dalzell took the win followed by Six and Mays. The gates dropped on the second moto and they all blasted into the first turn with Six edging out front for the holeshot. As they hit the first jump Dalzell was gunning for the lead, getting there shortly, only for Six to get it back heading towards the back of the track. They went back and forth several times, then on the second lap things got a little too close and Dalzell and Six both went down. Mays moved into the lead as Six got up first, and jumped back into it in second. On the last lap Dalzell had fought his way back, and got by Six to take over second. The overall for the day went to Dalzell giving Mays second and Six third. Open B had some great as always with a tight field in both motos. In the first moto Damon Tatar took the win with Ian Pistole and Paxton Kerber filling the top three spots. They came off the line for the second moto with Tatar getting out front followed by Colten Burk and Pistole falling into line for third. Pistole was on the gas, and took over second as they went through the first section of jumps with Tatar still up front and Colton Bentz sneaking in behind Pistole for third. Coming down the hill from the back section Burk swept hard on the inside and started picking people off, making his way to the front, dropping Tatar to second and Pistole back to third. However, it was short lived and Tatar fought back to take the lead on the second lap. Hitting the checkers Tatar took the win with Pistole and Burk holding out the top three. Tatar took the overall winning both motos, with Pistole in second and Kerber third overall after finishing fifth in the moto. When all done and said, it was another great day out at Sunset Ridge with the weather warming up to comfortable level. The track held up great today as always with the downtime non-existent as the races kept clicking by and everyone having a great time out there. It was a great end to another special season here in Walnut! AMA District 17 lost a founding father this month. Bill Maxey was not only a true competitor and rider’s rider, but his insight, participation, and thought process in the 60's made Districts and organized AMA racing what it is today. He was an inspiration to us and not only was part of our process since the beginning, but even as he started to slow down, would call and touch base with many of us to keep in the loop. One of the last AMA Congress meetings he wasn’t able to make it so he phoned in and closed the main congress meeting. Bill will be missed, but his memory and mark on us here in Illinois and at the AMA will live forever. “They don’t make ‘em like that anymore” comes

Trollhaugen challenges as Always Dresser Wisconsin - September 21 By Keith McKenna
A
fter taking a year off of the racing calendar, the Trollhaugen Off-Road Park in Dresser, Wisconsin again played host to a District 23 Hare Scramble event. Trollhaugen is always a punishing test of Off-road acumen, and this year proved to be more of the same. The old growth forest challenged racers with plenty of rocks, roots and ravines. Thrown in were generous amounts of mud and some deep sandy climbs and descents to make the festivities extra cringe worthy. There are two areas that are signature features of the grounds that the Norsemen MC club loves to throw into the course. One is named Area 51 and it is a no mans land. A virtual minefield of opportunities to accrue smashed pipes, bent brake levers and pretzeled shifters. It is a clearing where construction debris is cast off, where giant blocks of broken concrete and boulders are strewn about, to create the surface of hard, broken-up stuff. The other signature is what is commonly referred to as The Ravine. If you were

wandering around the woods and came upon this deep unforgiving gash in the hillside, once returning to the safety of the pits and you heard someone mention The Ravine, you would know exactly what they were referring to. A 60 yard deep cut into the side of the hill where storms have washed earth away for decades, revealing barrel sized boulders and tree trunks that had toppled into the mix. The course ran right down the ravine like an elevator ride to hell. It was the site of many smashed pipes and dreams. Many a rider would be observed dropping in, only to land in a heap at the bottom. The first racers to test out the conditions were the Premier class competitors, along with the PeeWees and the Girls 9-15. Even though Devin Jirik had missed two previous rounds in the season, with his victory today at Trollhaugen he would claim (to this point in the season) 4 first places finishes, one second and an 8th place. Leaving the race in Dresser, Devin had a 15 point lead on the rest of the class. Kyle Becker wheeled his way to second place in only his second race or the season. In the PeeWee division, Tanner Tommerdahl continued his dominance on his KTM 65SX with a podium topping effort. Another KTM, that of Charlie Siebenaler finished in second place with three laps to Tommerdahl’s four. In Girls 9-15, it was a KTM sweep as the top three finishers; Erin Becker, Emma Anderson and Madison Siebenaler all crossed on orange bikes. In the Macro class Travis Illies continued his winning ways. Aside from scoring a third place at the Brookston round, (mechanical failure), the season has been all top of the podium results for Illies. With two rounds left, Illies has an almost insurmountable lead of 56 points in the title chase. Mary Schreiner handily won the Women’s class race. At the checkers she led by more than four minutes over

the second place finisher, KTM mounted Miranda Tweeton, who in turn finished eight minutes ahead of Alicia Zazoski, also on a KTM. Schreiner has dominated with first place finishes throughout the season. Derek “The Punisher” Otteson continued his march to Vet-B supremacy. He took point very early in the race and remaining mistake free through three laps. Second place finisher in only his second hare scrambles race of 2014 was Jesse Szykulski. Szykulski kept it close throughout most of the race in an impressive ride. It would have been interesting to see how the season would play out, had Szykulski contested the entire season. In only his second race of the season Todd Mathwig raced his KTM to a first place finish in the Senior-A (40+) class. Michael Heuer finished in second, some three minutes down with Pat Adrian in third on another KTM. The fight to the top for the D23 AA Hare Scrambles Championship has had more ups and down than a roller coaster. The real CYCLE USA, December 2014

fight has been between last year’s top dog and multi-time D23 Hare Scrambles and Enduro champ Dylan Debel, and another multi-time champ, Nate Ferderer. At the end of the first lap the top three riders came through the scoring loop at twenty-seven minutes with Ferderer on point, Debel only fourteen seconds back and Matt Stavish forty-one seconds astern. At the end of lap two Stavish held station while positions 1 and 2 swapped. At some point, on lap three the hard charging Ferderer suffered a mechanical failure that would put his bike on the trailer. Debel went on to string together some stellar laps, showing The Ravine and Area 51 that he was not one to be trifled with. In the end, Debel would triumph by more than five minutes over the second place KTM of Stavish. At the end of the day, injuries were few, but shed tears were many as “The Troll” crushed many a spirit. But it sure was fun, in a sadistic off-road racer sort of way. Final WOTA Trials of 2014 Black River Falls, Wisconsin - Sept. 20/21 By Kevin Huber
E
very location that the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association holds events at has its own unique features. Black River Falls, the location of this year’s September 20th and 21st event is no exception. One feature has been affectionately named the “Butt Crack”. It is a crevasse in the steep hillside rocks. The approach is a sandy hill that requires the nerve to maintain full throttle until the top of the “Butt Crack” is reached. Only the top class riders even attempt this obstacle. Another Black River Falls staple is the “Zipper”, which is nothing but a telephone pole laying on the ground that is marked off, requiring riders to ride over it several times by weaving back and forth with little room to turn. In the last year another “Zipper” was built using a large log. So now we have a “Big Zipper” that the top three classes use, and the original “Little Zipper” that the three lower classes ride. These features add to the slightly sandy hillside that holds logs, exposed roots and some rocks to create a challenging course for the event. If you look at the results you note that some riders will show as Exhibition. Some have asked what this is. It is a rider that has paid the entry fee to ride but for some rea-

son or another does not want to be eligible for an event trophy or year-end points. Reasons vary, like having already won the class and don’t want another trophy from that class and do not feel ready to move up to the next, more challenging level. Others may be riding down a class due to age or injury. Sometimes, the person that builds the course will test the obstacles and wants to ride but doesn’t want others to feel they have an unfair advantage. Some even just want to ride along with their kids or grandkids. Maybe other events, such as Enduro or Hair
Scramble would want to implement this to attract riders that enjoy riding but are not interested in hard core competition. Team Mich Benefit Walnut, Illinois - September 13 By Steve Mondek, Jo and Maggie Utech
T
he moto community proved its strength yet again today. If I wrote the script myself, I couldn’t have done a better job. The track conditions were epic, weather was perfect, the turnout was massive, and the pure level of enthusiasm and support from each and every attendant was inspiring. On the afternoon of Friday, June 6, 2014, Chris Michels was in a life-threatening accident. While riding his dirt bike, he landed short on a double jump. He was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, with a possible spinal cord injury. Upon arrival Chris underwent a CT scan. The results of the CT scan were grim. Due to the injury sustained to his spinal column, Chris had been paralyzed below his waist and could not move or feel his legs. In addition to the injuries to his spinal cord, Chris fractured his right clavicle, ribs, and bruised his lungs. The smile I saw on Chris’s face was the biggest victory for me, and the $7000+ we raised was an added bonus. Chris is a great friend, and it meant the world to me that we were able to give back in such a meaningful way. I can’t thank everyone enough that made the Team Mich benefit what it was. In particular though I’d like to recognize a few individuals for going above and beyond. First and foremost, to the folks at Sunset Ridge MX, Bob Pistole and his amazing wife Jan, and kids, Josh and Chad for their generosity in the donation of their facilities, the endless hours working on the track after all the rain, and the expenses to offer everyone that came a "Perfect Event". The Pistole family has hosted three other benefits in the past for motocross families, as well as having a Track Walk every year for Susan G Komen Foundation, raising $11,000 to date. So on your next visit to Sunset Ridge, please give them a thanks for all they do. To the Piekos Family at Cycle Craft Yamaha in Woodstock, who donated many products for the auction. Mark Piekos who was in attendance said, “We’re so honored to be here to support Chris. He’s a great guy and we’re happy to do anything to help his healing process.” Hats off to Dave Deringer, Jeanie Gonzalez and the good people at Yamaha Motor Corp, Dan Fitch, Gus Coroulas and Andy Gustafson from Parts Unlimited, Ivan

fter weeks of rained out events, the crew at Woodstock KTM finally got an event off, just in time to finish the 2014 season. And it was a great event! An all new track layout was well received by all, and the weather and conditions were perfect on this September Friday night in Woodstock, IL. There’s no doubt that this series has become a hit with a lot of riders. Be it the location, a crew of lifetime racers running it, the Friday night twist, or a combination of it all... it works, and looks to be around for a while. This is good news for everyone, and it will be fun to see what 2015 brings to the series, still relevantly new after getting off the ground in 2013. When the racing kicked off, the 85Jr and Sr classes were combined, and it made for some really close racing all moto. Sr class rider Nick Swanson had his hands full with Kawasaki mounted Brody Spiekerman. Anthony Edgerton on KTM was never more than a bike length behind the leaders. In the final lap, Swanson finally got a little breathing room to cross the checkers first. Swanson, “The race went pretty good. I like the track a lot, the new layout is even better than before. I was riding good so I

was able to get a bit of space on him at the end, and it was a fun race. I’d like to thank my dad and Rock River Yamaha.” Sportland 2 rider, Spiekerman took the Jr class win ahead of Edgerton. SpiekerJames Wehrman won both the Heat and Main in +30B/C.
man, “He (Swanson) had a good start and got out front early. I have to give it up to Anthony Edgerton for riding really well also, as he was right there the entire time. The track was fun, and thanks to dad for helping me so much.” +30A and B ran together. After having to fight his way to the front in the heat race, “A” class rider James Rossi made easier work of it in the main. Getting the holeshot, and slowly slipping away, Rossi went wire to wire for the win. “B” class winner James Wehrman kept him honest most of the moto, as Denny Hacker (A) and Andrew Marsch bounced off each other all the way to the last lap, when Marsch got the edge, and finished second in the ten rider B class. Tom Farchione, Neil Anderson and Andy Cole rounded out the top five. It was exciting to see so many young riders at the race! In 50Jr, thirteen riders came off the gate in the final. Out front, Mikah Carpenter was taking full advantage of a group of riders going down in the first turn. Carpenter finished third in the heat race, but had his little KTM on the gas now, leading Shane Larson and Joseph Henry around the track. Heat race winner Riley Busse was quickly moving up, and slid into fourth by the second lap. A lap CYCLE USA, December 2014

later Busse was up to third, and closing the gap on Larson. Laps were ticking away, but just after the riders took the white flag, Busse moved up to second. Carpenter was still leading, and as Busse closed in a little, Carpenter took the checkered flag, as excited as you would expect. Landon Freund finished fifth after climbing ahead late in the race as well. Twelve riders were in 50Sr. The top two in the class quickly established themselves at the front, just like they did in the heat race. Talon Zollers and Deegan Cooley are comfortable out front, and it showed as they slipped away from the other riders with each lap. Zollers took the win as Ayden Oppen16

lander, Evan Griffiths and Johnathan Lucas filed across behind second place Cooley. Billy Holzapfel topped them all in the 250B class heat race, getting in front early and holding it to the end. In the main, he had a harder time. Out front off the start, Anthony Wallace was untouchable. Race Tech/ Rock River/ Yamaha backed Wallace, “I had a really good start with the holeshot and just pulled away. The heat race was tough, as I had to really work to get up to second. Making it happen in the main is what really matters anyway. The woops and the small double - double section by the grandstands were good for making time. Besides that, it was just riding really smooth, and consistent.”
Cary, IL’s Austin Teer was running second through the first lap with Jared Berggren right on his rear fender. Starting the second lap, Berggren slid out and dropped back. Holzapfel was happy to take over third, and go after Teer. Two laps later, as they swept the start area, Holzapfel made a cool outside line pass, riding really hard to take over second. They finished in that order with Jason Obrien and Daniel Kraemer following. There was plenty of action in the 250A class. Cameron Lansing topped them all in the heat race, and set stage in the main to repeat. With all the riders pushing hard, and being so close, it took just a little skip of Lansing’s front wheel while leading, for Scott Zont to slide into him. The two went down quick. Woodstock KTM/ TZR/ Club 57/ Fly Fast Moto backed Cody Vanbuskirk grabbed the lead. Vanbuskirk, “I had a pretty good start with Zont and Lansing in front of me. They got together near the end of the second lap and I made my way through them. From there, it was Travis (Sewell) right there behind me all the way to the end. The new track layout is awesome, and I love the two stroke out there.” Vanbuskirk took the win just Tyler Elliott topped them all in the Open B class.
ahead of Sewell while Austin Das held off every effort thrown at him by Vaughn Mays in the ten rider group. Zont fought his way back to fifth, Lansing didn’t finish. Another Woodstock KTM rider, Wyatt Mattson took the win in the ten rider 65Jr class. Ryder Beth kept him honest all the way, but the young Mattson was determined to win after finishing second in the heat race. Mattson, “The start was key. You have to get a good one, then just hold your lines and do good. I wanted to win so much in the main. Ryder was riding really good behind me, but I just rode to win.” Brandon Allen won the 250C class handily, as he often has. Then in Open C, after topping the heat race, he found himself having to fight for a chance in the main. Allen, “I got like third in the holeshot, and caught up to the leader (Alex Larson) and pushed too hard and went over the berm. I caught back up to second. I think I still won the series, so it is what really mattered to me. Larson was pumped after the close race, and taking the win. “This is the second moto win I have ever had. I’ve been battling with the #47 (Brandon Allen) all season, and to take
the win here at the last race is outstanding. He was on me and I took him high in the berm. The next corner he just blew through it, and it was great that he did it on his own, and I got it nice and clean. I’m moving up the B class next year, so this is like a perfect ending to the season out here!” You couldn’t have asked for a better season finale! Everyone was pumped up, happy to be back out racing, and it left a great sense of anticipation for 2015. Winter is here, and there’s nothing we can do about it... but wait, and get ready for what we all hope is an early spring. Thank you to all those involved in bringing these events back to Woodstock! Price did manage to edge out Blazek in the moto two start and immediately started putting some breathing room behind him. Blazek held on in second despite a late moto challenge from both Schweighardt and Sny-
Colton Parson on his back fender. Parson made a pass on Gravedoni, and Bailey Otis was also on the move. He advanced from a mid pack start to challenge Gravedoni, and slip past before the white flag came out to finish fourth. Gravedoni was out front at the Daytona corner in moto two, but had both Bill and Otis pushing him hard. Bill wasn’t wasting any time and was out front before they finished the lap. Telfer moved into second in the section by the road with Otis also slipping around Gravedoni. Parson made a pass into fourth on the white flag but it wasn’t enough to put him on the podium. Bill took the overall with Telfer (2/2) and Otis. Tom Ferguson and Cory Croschere came over the triple out of the holeshot side by side in front of the fifteen other +40 class riders. Croschere dropped back to fifth before the first lap was scored, having been passed by Doug Forstner, Lance Dehne and Troy Blakey. Forstner tried closing Ferguson’s gap. Dehne had his hands full as Blakey poked a wheel in for the entire second lap, finally getting past late in the lap. George

Justin Grant was on the move and slipped around Klinger before lap two was half over, and then he went to work on Toelle. Soon Grant was in second and catching Spinden, who bobbled and dropped to the back. Grant took the lead, with Toelle and Brady Bill (70) won 125Jr. after a Klinger following across the good race with Nate Telfer (510). finish. Spinden was out front again at the start of der. Ferguson took the lead coming out of the valley at the beginning of lap two. While Ferguson was running on an open track, Dehne was being pushed hard by Forstner, Croschere and Busse. Forstner moved past on lap two and Busse slipped into third shortly after. Ferguson took the overall ahead of Forstner (2/2) and Busse (4/3). After the moto a winded Ferguson, “This morning was fabulous, I got the holeshot and was just able to go from there. I haven’t been out in the lead from the start in a long time, and it was great. Second moto I just put my head down and kept going. I definitely could hear Forstner behind me, I have had some good races with him and he normally ends up on top. I was glad to take this one from him today. I’d like to thank Sportland2, V Metals, Oak Creek Automotive, and my wife and kid because they let me come out and do this crazy stuff.” Kaylen Pellmann was out front as the Women’s class came around the first corner, with Kirsten Raemisch and Andrea Walsdorf banging bars right behind her. Raemisch didn’t waste any track as she pulled into the lead before they hit the west section. Sierra
Heindl pushed her way into third with Kendra Randrup mixing up lines, trying to move past her. Randrup found an opening before lap three started and held on in third to the checkers. Raemisch stayed out front with Pellmann second. Raemisch was in the lead out of the gate in moto two and stayed there to the finish. Randrup was in second with Pellmann and then Walsdorf close behind. Walsdorf went down on the first lap and then just cruised to a mid-pack finish. 2015 Super Series Kicks-off Millville, Minnesota - October 12 By Rolfe Otterness
J
ake Loberg launched successfully into the 2015 Super Series with triple wins, the 14-24A, 250 A and Open A classes all falling in his favor. Traditionally Spring Creek Park gets a head start on the new year by running the first points race for the new season as the last fall event. Loberg was among the most successful riders of the day, but Josh Boaz, Ben Adamson and Trent Witwer also topped three classes in the day’s racing. The day started out frosty cold and one of the earlier classes to hit the track was +25A. Tim Zebro snared the holeshot and led down to the sandwash, pulling out a bit of a gap on lap one. Chris Nelson was on the move along with Bryce Bernloehr and on the second lap Nelson took command. Bernloehr managed to secure second shortly before the mid-point of the race. Bernloehr was running strong and made up ground on Nelson, setting up a challenge but he came up half a bike length short at the checkered. Zebro, Pat Miller and Bill Logan trailed them in short order. Zebro nailed the holeshot again in moto two, but Nelson was on him and made a move for the lead before the first lap was completed. Bernloehr did not start after trouble in another class, so the moto win appeared to be Nelson’s for the taking. Zebro kept it close early on but did drop back as the race went on and Nelson took a nice win. Bill Logan kept it pinned to take third over Matt Dohrn and Miller as the flag brought the race to a close. Gage Steberg grabbed the lead as the 85cc 9-12 class erupted from the starting gate. Wisconsin’s Carter Biese was running strong and took first away from Steberg early on. Steberg then made an uncharacteristic crash near the bottom of the pro hill before the completion of the first lap. Biese was flying and gapped the field quite handily to win by a big margin. Jayden Clough came through for second with Gavin Janovsky running third just a bit behind. Ethan MacMahon held on to fourth over Dillon Nelson. Steberg recovered to seventh after his first lap mishap. Steberg led early in moto two and held on to the lead for a lap with Biese in tow. Steberg bobbled allowing Biese to take control and pull out a bit of a gap and from there on Biese was in control. Steberg settled in for second and ran clean for the rest of the

losing out the year for Motosports Park was some special events for the Halloween weekend. It all kicked off October twenty-fifth with something fun for everyone; a chili and beer brew off along with pumpkin carving, hayrides and a haunted trail. On Sunday the racing was underway with some extra events added in as well. A pit-bike race that had a great turn-out, costume contest and at the end of the day was a tag team race for fun. This was raced with teams on the same bike, starting Gp style, running to the bike at a dead start and switching out riders every lap made for a really fun race for everyone to enjoy. The racing got underway with Schoolboy 2 out on the track ready to fight. In the first moto RJ Mackenzie took the win followed by Jarred Berggren and Cameron Rybak. When they came off the line to kick off the second motos, Mackenzie jumped out front for the holeshot with Jimmy Epifanio and Berggren right on his back tire. Hitting the first barrel, Berggren dove on the inside to take over second from Epifanio with the pack bunched up tight heading into the first jump. Coming down the hill to finish off the first lap Rybak had moved into third, fighting off Epifanio as they were going back and forth through the sand section. Coming down to the wire Berggren was all over Mackenzie finding a line heading into the top of the track to take over the lead, then holding on till the finish line. Kettle Moraine Mudfest Kewaskum, Wisconsin - October 19 By Gordon Lunde
T
hey call this a field and forest ride. Well most years anyway, but this year it was a mud ride, start to finish. The fields were flooded and the woods were dripping thanks to over two inches of rain during the week prior to the event. The Kettle Moraine Sport Riders have been running this event since 2005. Some years are dry, some are damp, but this year was WET! There was nasty, deep, black, stinking mud everywhere you turned. At least the rain stopped the day before so the paved roads were dry, but everything else was wet and slick. Oh yeah, did I mention slippery? Kind of like water and dirt mixed with oil and WD40 slippery. The stuff that drops riders before they know what is happening. Yeah, that stuff. OK, we have that picture, so now toss in the location. Wisconsin’s beautiful northern Kettle Moraine area which is to say the least, hilly. Steep hills, that the KMSR crew spent weeks before ascending and descending, putting together a great ride for the 178 riders entered. Then the rain came, and changed their route into a nightmare. So they were back out Saturday changing what they could to make the route safer, eliminating impossible areas and changing parts of the regular route into “hero” sections. Heros are the areas specially designed for skilled riders, very skilled in these conditions. The ride morning started out with temps right up there in the upper 30’... yeah, great day for a motorcycle ride, through mud.
However the very first section of the ride, right out of the parking lot at Amerahn Hall on Hwy 45 in Kewaskum was a ten mile off road route that warmed everyone up right away. Nothing like a good physical work out to get things heated up in a hurry. Dressing for this ride was simply, difficult. Layer up for the cold and you were sweating bullets in no time. Take some layers off and the 30-40 degree temps were frigid when you hit the open road sections. Finding the right combination took some time. Lunch couldn’t come soon enough. Wet, muddy, worn out and grinning from ear to ear we sat down to a nice lunch provided by the Wisconsin Off Highway Vehicle Association. Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground provided a great relaxing, lakeside setting for the noon meal. It almost made you forget the pain from battling the elements. The fall colors were beautiful, when you had time to look. Most of the time your eyes were peeled on the riding surface looking for the next place you were going to crash or get stuck. But yes, there was great scenery out there and those that took the time to stop and admire it had some great views. I fell into the other group. Yeah the ones that think, “Hey if two bikes get side by side, it’s a race.” So I spent my time hauling my butt through the fields and forests as fast as I could, which admittedly isn’t that fast in these days of this old abused bike rider body.
But hey, if I can beat anyone, I consider it a good day. So, if the mud wasn’t enough fun, the organizers tossed in some woods sections that would have been difficult in the dry. Tight woods single track riding that demanded all your attention. The trails also took you between trees that were not wider than the handle bars, thank you. Then there were the rocks, roots, fallen trees and tree stumps. Did I mention they were wet? Just for giggles, I must assume, the ride went through very long, open stretches of marshy, muddy fields that required sit way back on the seat, crack the throttle open and hang on type of riding. If you did it right, the result was a dirty bike. Get it wrong and it was just dirty, everything from head to foot, mud. I stopped to help a couple of riders and thought I was in quicksand. The mud sucked you in and didn’t want to let go. If I had been wearing anything but nice tight fitting moto boots, the footwear would still be there. At least I didn’t fall in like the other guy that was helping... and yes I did laugh at him. So the 10th anniversary KMSR Field and Forest ride is history. Can’t say I was unhappy to see it end, but yeah, I’ll be there next year for #11, mud or shine. CYCLE USA, December 2014

Big Woods 200 Dual Sport Wabeno, Wisconsin - September 28 By Gordon Lunde
T
he 2014 Big Woods 200 Dual Sport ride was an outright success in every way possible! The Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders organized a superb event, and the weather gods cooperated fully. There were 225 riders this year and they all had a great time riding the north woods of Wisconsin in picture perfect weather and conditions. The fall colors were absolutely amazing and temps in the 70s made the ride a comfortable, exciting tour. OK, maybe “tour is the wrong word to use as only part of the ride is touring the back roads of Langlade and Forest counties. The rest is a contest of rider skill and luck. The single track sections over rocks, sand, grass, mud and just about every other surface you can think of test the riders often.

CYCLE USA, December 2014
A glorious morning greeted everyone at the Wabeno Fairgrounds, which is ride headquarters for the weekend. There, the riders made final adjustments to their bikes and gear, greeted other riders and made new friends. Some riders already had their groups assembled to ride together and single riders searched out others to ride with. Young riders turned out on their latest, new bikes with all forms of gadgetry. GPS, cell phones, cameras, etc abound on their bikes to help guide and or record their way through the many miles of paths carved through the countryside. Older riders were in abundance also, but most of them relied just on the old standard roll charts mounted on the handle bars of some nice vintage machinery. Also, no new protective riders suits for these guys. Just an old leather kidney belt would suffice for protection. Leaving the fairgrounds and heading off
into the back roads soon sorted the riders that were well prepared and those that maybe should have spent a little more time in set up and preparation. Within the first five miles, several riders were heading back to the grounds for items forgotten or with equipment malfunctions. During the day, flat tires, broken levers and at least one minor injury sent riders to an early shower. For the rest of the group, the day was amazing in every way. The ride wanders through some fantastic countryside with views of the Peshtigo River, lined with full fall color of bright reds, yellows in the forest. Nicolet National Forest is so amazing at this time of year and enjoying it on a motorcycle ride makes it even better! After a morning of seventy plus miles of riding, lunch was served at the Silver Cliff American Legion Park. The menu was twenty different recipes of chili for the annual chili contest hosted by the American
After dinner the fun continued with auctions and raffles of items donated by local businesses and motorcycle shops throughout the state. Of course liberal liquid refreshments embellished the stories of the day’s ride, and for some the night ran very late. Early Sunday morning breakfast was served by a local restaurant and club officers made some announcements. The ride is a charity event to raise funds for local groups, school and business. This year funds were donated to the Wabeno food pantry, the high school sports department
Legion post. Homemade chili followed by an assortment of pies, crisps and cakes made by the American Legion Auxillary ladies was a treat that everyone enjoyed. With bodies and bikes refueled, the ride continued for another seventy plus miles back to the starting point. As well as the normal “main” route, riders have optional “hero” sections to ride if they are brave enough to venture into the abyss. Some sections are just a little more technical and challenging than the main route. Others are true hero sections that require a good background of off-road riding because they are very technical and challenging to even the best riders among the group. After the ride, dinner was being prepared by the Wabeno Lions Club while riders unwound and cleaned up to enjoy the evenings festivities. Steaks, baked potatos, salads and desert were enjoyed by all and the stories of great parts of the ride or tales of doom from some that were not so fortunate filled the air. Laughter was the main sound heard through out the room proving the ride was a great success to most.
e Race: Sit
and others, an impressive $3200 in donations! The biggest news was that of a new single track riding area in the works in the town of Laona, WI. WDSR members have started cutting trails and by next fall hope to have it complete with 5-7 miles of trails, open year round to the public. My personal ride was great. No accidents, no broken parts and again, I got to ride with some great friends, new and old. This ride is one of the high points of my year on a motorcycle. I learned that I need to make some adjustments on my new bike and really need to spend more seat time on it. The aching thighs Sunday morning proved just how out of shape I am for off-road riding right now. I’ll change that and be back next year for another wonderful ride through Wisconsin’s gorgeous northwoods with one of the best off-road motorcycle clubs in the state. Please check the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders web site www.wisconsindualsportriders.org soon for more pictures and information on next year’s events.

Pearl City Trials Pearly City, Illinois - Oct. 18/19 By Liz Jeffries
F
rost lay heavy on the ground Sunday morning as we woke for the last contest of the NITRO 2014 season. Today it was being held at Pearl City, IL, a gorgeous private property owned by one of the riders, Tito Nappi. As the frost burned off, it turned into a beautiful day. Bright blue skies towered overhead as a slight breeze played through the trees, and even though the area had rain during the week, the ground was tacky and the traction was amazing. The Trialsmasters had created a variety filled wonderland for the riders. The loop was a fun mix of open atv type trails and twisty single track through the trees. Low rocky creeks, tight twisty turns around trees, boulders, climbs and steep descents awaited the group who set out today. As an added bonus, a fine layer of fresh fallen leaves lay waiting to turn
even the slightest off camber into a dab grabber. The sections ranged from tight and technical to long flowing, and then full of turns and logs, providing every type of terrain to test every skill a rider had. And the riders had come to play! The Women’s class had four entries with Sara Pranskunas taking first with a total of six points. The Youth class was won by Chasen Orme. Jeff Franklin took first in Senior and Matt Dissell dominated the Knobby class. The Novice class was hotly contested between eight riders. The top five were separated by only nine points, with Lee Orme taking the big win with a completely clean day! Intermediate saw low scores as well, with Brian Fore coming out first with five points over Tim Pickett with eight. Ryan Rivenburgh finished first for Advanced, and had the distinction of winning every NITRO contest he entered this year. Greg Sassi blew away the
Ralph Littlefield
Expert field with an astounding thirty-eight points, and Ralph Littlefield (NITRO’s President) came in second with seventy. And of the four riders in the Champ class, Dave Rohrschnieder once again claimed the top prize with an amazing thirty-two point day. Dave also was awarded the 2014 Trials Rider of the Year award, not only for his amazing riding in the contests over the year but for his continuing work to help support and assist other riders. Mike Cross and
Ralph Littlefield received the Ironman award for the year, meaning that they were the only riders to compete and finish every NITRO event this season. There was also a brief presentation of the 2014 NITRO champions, who will receive their awards at the banquet. Thanks to all the great landowners, Trialsmasters, helpers, checkers, and everyone else involved who made it an amazing season! Springfield Armory Shootout Geneseo, Illinois - September 27/ 28 By Jordyn Minnaert
I
t was the last weekend of September, and riders eagerly lined up at a local farm in Geneseo, Illinois for a fun filled event. The Springfield Armory Silver Dollar Shootout has been has an astonishing organization put together by motorcycle enthusiast and riders themselves. Originating in the 1960’s, the Enduro event became more than just idea. Although the Enduro has not ran continuously since then because of various issues, 2015 will mark 50 years of its origination. It originally was named the Con Rod Derby and the Tri City Motorcycle Club, located in Coal Valley, Illinois, held the event. The start of the event use to be on the Kershaw Farm in Colona, Illinois, at the base of the Rock River Bridge. Then it moved out to the club house that the club operated out of. It would travel over many areas of land in Henry County including both the Green River and Rock River bottom ground that could not be used for farming. It would go into multiple land owners’ fields and timbers. As well as Bob Reese’s Farm, owner of Springfield Armory in Geneseo, Illinois, on the north side of town, which would always be the biggest challenge of the event because of the big hills. Over the years as off-road motorcycling became more centralized in one area with shorter 3-5 mile courses, hare scrambles races took over and Enduro events tapered off. In the early 1990’s Ron and Harv Whipple, being Enduro enthusiasts, started it back up. After a short break, the first place it was held was at the Livesay Farm, located in Geneseo. Year after year, the event would also start at Loitz's Farm in Geneseo, and at the Springfield Armory machine shop by the Reese Farm. It came to start in the Henry County because there was more cooperation from landowners and law enforcement than in Rock Island County. “There use to always be the misconception of motorcyclist being rowdy and full of gang members,” states Harv Wipple. “However that is no where near the case and I believe Henry County knew that, being a farm community. With both ATV's and motorcycles on the farm, many of the land owners rode themselves.” Ron and Harv Whipple, now owners of WFO promotions, got Springfield Armory to sponsor this Enduro event and renamed it The Springfield Armory Silver Dollar 50

Shootout. Both of the owners of Springfield Armory, Tom and Denny Reese, as well as their father Bob, raced Enduros. Just like in the early days, it became a challenge for the Whipple brothers to lay-
out a course over so many miles, so they put it aside. Ron went about putting on hare scramble races and Harv went off to doing his own work for the AMA. Troy McDonald took over the Enduro
and ran into the same ‘over it’ issue. As of last year, Jerrod Minnaert and a handful of his friends took over the enduro. Layton Erickson is responsible for the dual-sport enduro. The Enduro is held on the Minnaert’s Farm, still located in Geneseo. The process of prepping and setting up the Enduro takes not only time, but also a lot of help. Jerrod and his friends have brought a new life to the enduro by lining up various charities to donate to. This year the proceeds raised by the Enduro went to the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. Harv Whipple says, “As I think back, that is what we should of done all along because no one puts on Enduros for the money. They all do it because they love the sport and they want to give back.” This year, Bren Rashke was the overall winner for the A class. The top riders were back to back from the first test to the last. After the first two tests, there were still six riders tied for the overall win. After the third test of five, the tops riders were all within ten seconds. “At that point I knew I was sitting second overall, and I knew I had a shot at this

thing,” stated Rashke. When Rashke went into the last and longest test, it was a winner takes all kind of deal. “I just put my head down and kept pushing. I felt terrible through the whole test. I came out of the woods thinking I got smoked! Finding out I won the overall was like a dream come true, being from this area on some of the

Illini Series Finale at Crossroads
250C class start
Mason, Illinois - Nov. 2 By James Pinckard
R
ound five of the Illini Series was hosted by Crossroads MX. It was a rain date, and having a race in November is always a risk. This time it paid off as the temps were cool, but perfect for racing. Drew made some track changes and I have to say the dirt and track was the best I have ever seen! What a great, fun track to ride! Word in the pits race morning was the track was for sale. All the riders said we hope whoever buys it keeps it as a Motocross track. If you chose to go somewhere else or stay home because of the weather you missed out! Thank you Matt Jackson from World of Powersports for putting on the races and supporting the Illini Series. The day started with church service that was dedicated to Troy Lea. Troy was a member of the Christian Brothers Motocross. Troy First time winner, 50Sr passed away this year class rider Caleb House 52

from a stroke. He is missed, having touched the lives of many riders both young and old. They day ended with the Illini Series overall awards. Congratulations to all the 2014 Illini Series Champions! There were a few riders that had an outstanding day. Yamaha rider
Joey Sapienza took the moto wins and overalls in the 125 and Schoolboy classes, locking down the series championships. Yamaha rider Landen Noggle also had a big day. In Open C Noggle won the first moto with Suzuki rider Ethan Chesnut second and Yamaha rider Tristen Smith third. In the second moto Noggle again took the win for the sweep and overall. Chesnut finished second with Smith. In 250C Noggle again had his Yamaha on the gas taking the first moto win with Sage Glasgow charging hard for second. In the second moto Glasgow gave everything he had but he couldn’t match Noggle this day. Noggle was on his game taking the win. Paul Law finished third in both motos. I think the most impressive rider of the day was Skyler Leaf. In the 85Sr class Leaf had his Honda flowing around the track, setting big bike lap times to take the first win. Kawasaki rider Jacob Mcgee finished second with KTM mounted John Greer third. In Supermini Leaf was at it again, jumping to early leads and never looking back. In both motos Kawasaki rider Jacob Mcgee finished second with Grant Shelton third. Shelton has to be the most improved rider this year, being his first year he put in a strong rides.
Grant Shelton charging to third in the SuperMini class.

Azzie Finishes D16 Season! Lake Mills, WI - October 12 By Dave Hollub
O
ctober always means a close to the motocross season at Aztalan Cycle Club, it also means a chance to pay respects to two former members lost at a young age to cancer. The race is the Randy Schuessler/ Gabe Leonard Memorial race and the club uses this weekend to raise money for the fight to eliminate cancer. This year the weather was a perfect fall day for the 350 entries that came out. When the gate dropped for the 34 riders in 250C, Jake Garwood launched out front and stayed there to the finish. James Burd settled into second, and despite pressure from Lucas Zimmerman all moto held the position. Seth Doeberlein was in fourth until Craig Flancher got by early in lap two. Garwood was out front again at the first corner in the second moto and immediately began putting a gap on everyone else. Simon Walters
came over the plateau on lap one in second with Zimmerman, Hunter Schueller, and Joseph Scheiber right behind. Flancher worked his way into fifth before the checkers came out. Garwood took the overall with his 1/1 day while Zimmerman (4/3) was second and Walters (6/2) was third. Eli Walters followed Tyler Murrie around the first corner in 250B moto one. Walters wasn’t wasting any time and the first time over the plateau he was out front and had already opened up some breathing room over Murrie. Aaron Sirko and Nicholas Czechowicz were close behind. Czechowicz moved into third when Sirko went down on lap two. Kenny Ehredt was fourth with Mason Persha right behind. Murrie bobbled on lap three after the plateau and fell back to mid-pack leaving the door open for Czechowicz to finish second just in front of Ehredt and Persha. In moto two, Walters grabbed the holeshot and immediately

started pulled away. Czechowicz got past Murrie on lap two for second. Jacob Jesko was next in line to challenge Murrie and made the pass before the lap ended. Jesko began chasing down Czechowicz. Jesko pressured him through the fourth lap and finally made a pass stick as they went over the plateau on lap five. Jesko held on to second at the checkers. The 1/1 day gave Walters his first overall of the day while Czechowicz (2/3) was second and Persha turned is 4/4 day into a third overall. After taking the 250B and Open B overalls as well as a second in Sportsman B/C Walters commented, “My day went really good, I had some good motos and went 1-1 in 250 and
Open B, and Sportsman went 2/2 right behind Jamison Duclos. I thought I was going to get him that last moto but realized it was only four laps instead of six like the others. I just did my best and worked my way through the pack when I had to. Once I was out front I settled in and rode my own pace, stayed true and did what I know how to do. Overall a real great day, my Southeast Sales Suzuki is performing great. Thanks also to All Good Healthy Fast Food, Life vantage with Axio Energy drink, ProTaper, Decal Works Graphics and my Mom and Dad.” Elijah Tetzlaff edged out Jackson Oehlhof for the holeshot in moto one of 65cc, but Cole Godfrey and Justin

Godfrey had his hands full holding back Justin Oehlhof until midway through lap two when Justin Oehlhof found an opening big enough to slip through for the lead. Justin Oehlhof looked like he was going to cruise to the moto win until he slipped up enough for both Godfrey and Tetzlaff to pass him on the final lap. Justin Oehlhof launched out of the gate for moto two and hit the holeshot with Tetzlaff close behind. Godfrey and Tetzlaff again capitalized on an error by Justin Oehlhof resulting in both moving past him on lap three. This time Justin Oehlhof had enough time to at least regain second by passing Tetzlaff as the white flag was coming out. A two moto win gave Godfrey the overall with Justin Oehlhof (3/2) converting the moto math to take second while Tetzlaff (2/3) was third. Usually I know it is Marc but today Stewie was also on a 2 stroke, and he was also riding really well so I wasn’t sure who it was. The track was great, it held up great and the crew did a good job. I would like to thank Aztalan Cycle Club for putting on a great event and Rock River Powersports.” While it is always sad to end the season, it brings out the anticipation for next year. Now the bench racing can start over who is going to dominate next year. Aztalan Cycle Club wants to pass along a huge THANK YOU to everyone that came out this year. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to keep improving and striving to maintain some of the best racing in the midwest. LTM D17 Bonus Points Weekend
14-24 class riders; #28 Parker Smith and #517 Kenny Felgar.
Casey, Illinois - October 25/26 By James Pinckard
T
he Lincoln Trail Motosports crew did a great job preparing two tracks before holding three races! Saturday it was the Classic track motocross. Sunday the Classic track hosted a Quad only race while the Bomber track hosted the District 17 Bonus Points race, and the final round of the Fly Showdown series. On top of all this, another huge reason so many people
turned out is that is was LTM’s annual Appreciation weekend. And what a fun weekend it was! Great, warm weather welcomed riders and their families to the appreciation party. On Saturday riders got the privilege of racing on the Classic track. This is a track with great history, and always fun to ride. The downhill triple is still one of the best jumps and track features that I have ever seen. If you have not raced this track, do it the next chance you get. Saturday morning started off with practice and a halloween costume contest. The rules to the contest were you had to ride the third practice with your costume, and it Evan McCoy, back at the track.
Gary Adams topped the +45 and +50 classes both days.

was a riot. Indian warrior Rollanda Johnson not only had on a costume, but her bike decorated as well. It looked like she was riding a horse. It was fun and the LTM crew gave out great trophies to the top three. Saturday seemed to draw lots of “classic” riders. The +55 class had a good showing. In the first moto Yamaha rider Gary Peak took the win with KTM rider Gary Shewhart second and Charles Nice third, ahead of Rodney Wiley and Ken Felger fifth. In the second moto Peak showed why he has the number one on his bike, and took the moto and overall win. Nice had his 250 Yamaha smoking the second moto and finished second for the moto and overall while Shewhart held on to third. The 30B/C class has to be one of the best classes on the track. The class size has been huge, hosting one of the biggest classes of the day and for sure the biggest age class. In the first moto Kawasaki rider Aaron Carter was flying and took the win. Eran Salzmann was second with Honda rider Brian Kooistra third. In the second moto Carter again took the win and the overall with Salzmann second. Yamaha rider Brad Adams finished third for the moto dropping, Kooistra to fourth. Adams finished third overall with Kooistra fourth and Ben Yarnell fifth. After the Classic track race I was approached by a guy who asked “Do you remember me?” It was 250C Kawasaki rider Evan McCoy. I asked how he was and how
he did today and he said, “I got ninth in the C class, I haven’t been back riding for long because I had cancer. While I had it I would get chemo during the week and ride a couple of days later. It’s all about attitude right? Now I have a child and I’m cancer free and getting back to racing.” Wow what a fighter! It’s great to see someone with such a strong love for life and thankful for being back at the track doing what he loves. Just a great example for all of us when we choose to focus on small problems. Saturday night the races moved to the pit bike track where around eighty entries went after it. There were all kinds of bikes, riders from many age groups, and they all had one thing in common; They had a great time! A new class was added this year, a “Moms” race. It was great to see the kids cheering for the moms, and the moms had a great race that was full of smiles. I look for this race to grow next year, so practice up moms and come out and play. Thank you Drew! In addition, there was free food for everyone who came out, and no one went away hungry. They had and prizes all weekend, giving away Fly swag and many other items. JM Racing was also on hand with their support truck. Matt Borgic said, “We
like coming out to support this event and I will help any rider set up their bike with sag and settings, free of charge. We do work at the track, wanting to do more than just provide shop service. We want to be out there and help tune the suspension after the work has been done.” Matt stayed Sunday until the last truck pulled out, taking care of every question anyone had. One thing that could have used some suspension work was the Hay ride. The wagon was full of kids and families most of the night, taking rides and having a great time. Being fall, the nights do get cool but all you had to do is go to the Bonfire which was huge! After everyone went Part of the fun Saturday night, in the Buddy race. back to camp there were monpion Mark “The Bomber” Barnett who sters in the pits! Trick or Treat that is. raced the Classic track many years ago, and Many kids went around gathering candy, is from Illinois. This was the final round of and just enjoying being kids. the Fly Showdown series and a District 17 Sunday morning welcomed riders to the Bonus Points race. A great reason for the Bomber track. This track is much faster, riders to fight for spots because every one and built my former AMA national chamcounted!

The 250C class was huge, not surprising. In the first moto Honda rider Hunter Wilson took the win with Yamaha’s Landen Noggle and Gage Noblitt close behind. In the second moto Wilson again took the moto win. Noblitt stepped it up, finishing second. Yamaha rider Tyler Thompson took third and after finishing fourth the first moto gave him third overall. The 14-24 class saw Kawasaki rider Parker Smith simply getting it done! Smith took the first moto win with Gage Noblitt second and KTM rider Kenny Felgar third. Eddie Kline finished fourth with Suzuki rider Koty Groutage fifth. In the second moto Smith was cranking and took the moto and overall wins. Second for the moto was Felgar who also took second overall ahead of Noblitt. The +45 class was flying! The first moto Yamaha rider Dean Stouer proved to be the fastest besting Kawasaki rider Gary Adams, a long time fast guy. Suzuki rider Scott Campbell finished third With Kawasaki rider Darrin Cook fourth and Todd Oney fifth. In the second moto it was on! Things were all mixed up from the first moto and when the smoke cleared Adams was on top, taking the moto and overall wins. Stouer finished second ahead of Oney. Crook found himself in fourth for the second moto again as Campbell finished fifth. Thank you to the staff and crew of Lincoln Trail for providing us great tracks to ride and race on all year.
