Nelson tops Trollhaugen Dresser, Wisconsin - September 25 By Paul Otto
R
ain, rain go away. The internet blew up days before round 7 of the District 23 Hare Scramble Series in Dresser, WI at the Trollhaugen Ski Resort as Mother Nature has been rearing her ugly head in the form of rain. Worried about all the rain, riders or should we call them fair weather riders had been badgering trail boss Dan Banks on how much rain the course has received and how the trails looked. In true fashion there’s always more rain, the trails are always rockier, sandier and muddier or whatever you don’t like, than what the trail boss reports. Its humorous that people even ask. Even with the conditions the Norsemen Motorcycle Club worked with what they had and took those lemons and made lemonade. Some may say there was too much water in the lemonade, but it was still lemonade.
Miranda Tweeton on her way to winning the Women’s class.
#94 Kyle Nelson & #2 Nick Swenson squaring off at the start.
Steve Lundberg kicked off the event with an awesome guitar solo of the National Anthem. Now all patriotic and ready to roll the main event was ready to fire off the line and find out what the course had in store for them. With a shotgun start the AA riders shot off the line with non other than Kyle Nelson on his easy to start KTM 150 getting off to an early lead. From there, he never looked back. Nelson maintained a sizable lead over newly crowned Enduro champ Nick Swenson on his Checkpoint OR backed CRF250. Swenson who also had a sizable lead over eventual third place rider Tyler Pogreba, took a swim on the last lap with his bike. Luckily, several bystanders were there to help pull him out in time as Pogreba closed the gap
within a couple of seconds. Lady luck was on his side as Swenson needs every point he can get to stay close to Nelson in points. Separated by only 12 points and one race to go it’s Nelson’s championship to lose at this point. Jayme French is on fire as of late. The Premier rider picked up a win four races into the season and has pulled out four more since then. The only rider to do five laps and to have lap times within nine seconds of each other when the track continues to deteriorate shows some real consistency out of the youngster. French also took first in the Junior class which runs with the C class. French was able to place an impressive 16th place Overall C in some pretty gnarly conditions. Looks like someone might be able to slide right into B class and be competitive. Another strong rider in these classes is the #12 of Isaac Newport. Newport has been consistent all year placing in second but, unfortunately on this day his race was cut short due to a clutch problem that left him stranded out on the trails. Sources say his mechanic was quickly fired and then immediately reinstated when he realized he needed a ride home. Capitalizing on Newport’s misfortune was Jason Albers, taking second and Caleb Sledd jumping on the box for third. Zach Wittmer finally put his big boy pants on, albeit in the form of pink Troy Lee pants and moved up to the B class after a long career in the 250C class. CYCLE USA, December 2016

Jayme French had a great day, winning the Premier class.
Wittmer reported that he did 2 ¾ laps and had his best finish ever. When asked about the other ¼ he replied that his legs felt like jelly from pedaling up and down the rutted hills, he was tired and the trail was close to his truck. When asked if the extra hour of riding wore him out he said no that he’s done several GNCC races and the C class runs two hours so he knew what to expect. The Micro/Macro riders had a hard time. Hosting an event at a ski resorts is a battle in itself to find enough flat ground for their little tires. Now add rain to the mix and you have a real battle on your hands. If you want to get in a good workout become a sweep rider for this class as all the volunteers find themselves picking up bikes, getting them unstuck, starting them and then doing it all over 10 feet down the trail. That’s not the norm, but in these type of conditions it’s inevitable. In the end we give credit to all the kids that came out, took on the challenge and learned some valuable lessons. At the checkers it was Eric Niedzieski, Austin Holasek and Louie Etzel taking the top spots in the Micro class and Ruslan Johnson, Maxwell Munoz and Ethan Anderson stealing the show in the Macro class. Nice job guys. Another successful race is in the books. Props to all who showed up and tackled the harsh conditions. Thanks to the Norsemen Motorcycle Club and all whom helped put on this race. It’s come down to the last race of the season. Best of luck to all. From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman This is the last issue of Cycle USA for the 2016 season. It is a double issue so it contains all of our events from September and October. We still have our awards ceremonies for each discipline coming up. The dates, times, and locations can be found on the ARMCA website. The class champion jackets are being readied, we will also be awarding a jacket to the B and C class winners this year. We’re looking to make more District apparel available in the near future, as we need to get out name out there as I have talked about before. One of the best and most efficient ways to do that is to wear our apparel. December 17th, at 1:00 P.M. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on American Blvd in Bloomington will be the site of our annual business meeting. Eric Kudla is the go to man for D23 at the AMA. He will be attending the meeting to answer questions and cover new programs within the AMA. In addition to hearing from Eric we will have congress reports from all four of our congress attendees. Rules change proposals will be voted on by the membership at this meeting. I will bring you up to speed on all the district business, including our financial, and membership reports. Lastly we will be electing the board of directors, officers and class representatives. These are the people that make the decisions for you as members. It is important for you to be there and vote or be nominated for a position. Please feel free to volunteer for any position that you feel is important and you can be a positive influence on. All of our disciplines have now finished their respective seasons, the points have been tallied, and the awards points posted on our website. For those of you in the top three in your class make sure you go the website and submit your
Announcements, personal stuff, and.... picture in the correct format so we can get it in our awards program. Make sure that you find the application for award ceremony tickets and get it sent in as seating for the MX awards and meal is limited. It is best to get tickets early for all ceremonies if you plan on attending. We have been discussing any format changes to the MX program but so far nothing is set in stone. I do think that the end of season Featured Events “may” have week off in between them. There has also been some discussion about the possible addition of a Sprint Enduro being added to the Off-road schedule. This would be a welcome addition to the schedule. Some of these items and issues may have been set in stone by the time you read this. One last reminder that a racer has to be 16 years old to ride any bike larger than a 350cc for the 2017 season. That limit will drop to 250cc in 2018. A racer has to be 16 as of the day of the event to ride anything larger than a 350. Look for all the new AMA rules to be posted in January of 17. There weren’t a lot of new rules or changes, but they have to ratified by the board of trustees prior to being put in force. They usually meet in early January. That’s about all I have for right now. Look for plenty of new information in the first issue of 17. Also keep up to date by going to ARMCA.org. Enjoy the off season, but don’t let up on your training. I know I’m looking forward to the start of the SX season, with luck we’ll get to see many of our MN pros at the new stadium. Until the snow melts and our next season starts take care have a great Holiday Season, and keep dreaming of the wins you want to get next season. Mike
Have a Merry Christmas and a Safe & Happy New Years Look for Cycle USA when we return in March to kick-off the 2017 season.

Motosports Park Vet Race Byron, Illinois - September 24 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography
T
he end of September came with the annual RacerX Vet Race out at Motosports Park. There was a great turn out at the park and some excellent racing over the weekend with fall starting to show itself in the Midwest. The track was in great shape today with some nice lines forming. There was plenty going on this weekend to keep everyone entertained on and off the track. It was a very cool race to check out with an interesting format of all adult classes. Up early in the +45A first moto David Hayes took the win followed by Roy Nafzger and Mark Marescalco. The second moto dropped with Nafzger pulling the holeshot being chased down by Hayes and James Ricci. Hayes took the lead as they made their way towards the back of the track. Coming up the step-up Ricci went down allowing Joseph Beher to slide into third as Nafzger re-took the lead. As the laps ticked by Marescalco was on the charge after a bad start and in the final lap he was able to get into third. Nafzger took the win and overall for the day, Hayes in second and Marescalco rounded things out with a third overall. +18A was a great race. In the first moto Byron Downen took the win ahead of Sean Hallin and Brandon Marescalco. They took off the line for moto two with Downen jumping out front followed by Billy Holzapfel and Hallin. Coming around the sweeper Marescalco took over third and was gunning for the front. Coming through the sand a small mistake left Downen on his side moving Holzapfel to the front with Marescalco in second and Joshua Marescalco third.

CYCLE USA, December 2016
Downen got up in last place and started a charge back to the front. By the final lap he was up to third and right behind Brandon Marescalco actually passing him over the finish line, but not before the transponders giving a third place for the moto. Downen did however take the overall with Brandon Marescalco second overall and Holzapfel taking third overall having a fifth place in the first moto. There was a lot of passing going on in +55 making for some exciting racing. In the first moto Roy Nafzger took the win followed by Rick Munson and Ronald Downen. The second moto got underway with nineteen riders heading for the first turn. Tim Boblin grabbed the holeshot with Richard Crouthers and Nafzger right behind him. Nafzger made quick work in the next turn moving up to second and then to the front as they hit the sweeper. They jostled Boblin into second with Downen on the gas, moving up to third as the pack started to settle into a grove. Downen was keeping up a good pace and took over second while Munson was making his way up as well. Munson got into a good battle and finally got an inside line to take over third. Time ran out as the checkers flew giving Nafzger another overall for the day, Downen was second overall while Munson grabbed third. +60 was up next with another large group out there making it look easy. In the first moto Rick Munson was back taking the win with Wayne Welzien in second and Steve Medcalf third. The second moto got underway with Munson jumping out front and not looking back followed by Welzien. Coming through the sweeper Dave Antolak moved up to second, bumping Welzien back to third.
Antolak and Welzien went back and forth for several laps before Welzien secured second and Michael Zimmerman moved in on the opportunity grabbing third. Not to be forgotten, Medcalf was riding smooth making up for a bad start and pushed back into third place as the laps quickly ticked by. Coming across the finish Munson took the sweep grabbing the overall, Welzien in second and Medcalf third. It was an awesome day of racing out at Motosports Park. It was some exciting racing all day with plenty of battles to keep things interesting. The day was capped off with some awards and some special vintage racing, plus the vintage pit bike race to get everyone out there cheering. Labor Day at Pine Ridge Athelstane, Wisconsin -september 4 By Cody Wills
I
f it’s Labor Day it’s Fall Classic time at Pine Ridge Raceway. The last chance riders got to hit the track was back at the Loretta Lynn qualifier weekend in May. This year although the Labor Day weekend was not a Pro-Am, the turnout was still fantastic, people didn’t want to miss out on a final chance to get a gate drop at the beautiful north woods Pine Ridge Raceway. Also a thing to notice this time of the year is the amount of riders checking out new tracks for their first time as they chase the yearend points for District 16. Some guys will travel to the north to race tracks that they have only heard about and now have a great reason to be there. Open C and 250C had a points battle of their own going on between Brock Noreen, Scott Fifarek and a few others. Noreen has been on the gas the past few weeks and today was no different. Noreen went four for four on the day extending that points lead in both classes. Fifarek had a solid day with 3-5 scores in 250C and 3-7 in Open to keep him in the
hunt. Nick Jacobson, second at the time Strauss in moto one while Ahola had in points in Open C went 6-9 for seventh troubles handing second and third to Ponwhich was a big loss to Noreen on the ton and Strauss. Moto two had Strauss’ day. The Sportsman’s class saw some dominance by Ryder Hanninen, with the battle was behind him. Cody Warren and Jordan Nielsen fought for second in moto one and Warren ended up getting the better end of the deal. Nick Randrup picked up fourth behind Nielsen. Moto two saw Cody Jones get back in the mix and finish in that second spot behind Hanninen. Randrup was looking to improve his moto one performance by staying on the tail of Jones in second, but had to settle for third. Warren picked up fourth in the moto but the 2-4 scores was good enough for second overall as Jones went 5-2 for third. The A classes had a couple of north woods regulars doing battles. Open A saw some dominance by Dylan Ziolkowski in both motos. The real battle was between Taylor Strauss, Dennis Ponton, and Kyle Wayne Welzien waiting for the start of his +50 class. Ahola. Ponton got the best of
Dylan Ziolkowski out to a big lead early in the Open A class, as everyone works through the beautiful whoops of Pine Ridge MX.
125Jr rider Bailey Otis went 3-6 for fourth overall.
put his Rob’s Performance KTM out to a good start but it wasn’t long before Ziolkowski took over where he left off in moto one. Strauss was fast enough to hold on to second as Ahola rebounded for a third on his TM. Ponton settled for fourth, but good enough for third overall behind Strauss. Going back to the District 16 points battle we found one in the 250A class, as Ponton and Ahola. Ahola got the best of Ponton in both motos, forcing the battle to move on to the next round. Another close point’s battle continued in the 65 class between Deegan Van Vreede and Gavin Templen. Deegan held the points lead. They would both flex their muscle against the others going 1-2 in dominate fashion. Unfortunately for Gavin, Deegan extended his lead. That’s a wrap for the 2016 season at Pine Ridge. People who came for their first time or maybe their first time in a long time where treated to great weather and an excellent track provided by the Pine Ridge crew. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the 2017 season.

Miller takes two at Millville
Trevor Lind (#633) rips off the gate in the +25A class.
Millville, Minnesota - September 11 By Rolfe Otterness
H
enry Miller grabbed wins in two classes at the Spring Creek 2016 Super Series finale, taking top spot in the 14-24A and 250A classes over some tough competition. Miller has been absent from Spring Creek for most of the season as he attacked the national circuit, but showed he could still navigate the track here with speed while dicing with top talent such as Zack Williams, Nick Schnagl and Jerry Robin. Other riders that wrapped up the series with great performances were Domenic Hegman in the 65cc classes, Jayden Clough on his 85cc bike, Josh Boaz in Supermini, Schoolboy and 125 Two Stroke and Ben Adamson taking 14-24B, 250B and Open B. The track was in decent shape although the uphill on the west side of the track was still rerouted due to rain runoff damage from the ‘monsoon’ season which was unleashed upon southern Minnesota this summer. As starter Tom Kidd dropped the gate on the 85cc 9-12 class, Jayden Clough surged from the line and led the pack through turn one. Avery Long and Drew Sampson were quick to give chase as they headed down toward the sand 16

whoops. Clough has had great speed and endurance this season, still Long kept the pressure on for the first couple of laps with Sampson running just behind. At about the halfway point in the moto Clough managed to start edging away a bit and when the checkered flew the top three riders were spread out with four or five seconds between. James Clough moved up in the order late in the moto to take fourth with Trevin Nelson snaring fifth. Long came flying out to lead the pack through turn one in the second moto but Jayden C. was able to quickly demote him to second and lead the first lap. Clough and Long took off out front while James C. and Sampson got into a battle over third that raged for most of the moto before James hung on for third when they took the finish line jump four laps later. Jayden C. and Long crossed the line ahead of them and Nelson was a bit behind to tally another fifth. Brandon Johnson led the pack as the 14-24C class rounded turn one for their first moto. Johnson held onto the lead for the first lap but trouble was knocking on his rear fender as Aaron Blackstone and Hunter Meyer trailed him up and over the Holy Schmit jump. Blackstone and Meyer were quickly by him on lap two
with Zack Strecker also working his way into third. Blackstone turned up the wick on his YZ and pulled away from Meyer to take the win by about seven seconds at moto’s end. Strecker was about ten bike lengths back for third with Alex Damlow fourth over Justin Evans. Strecker must have built his confidence to a new level in his moto one charge as he blasted into the lead when the gate dropped on moto two. He set a good pace and held strong for the entire race to take the win over Blackstone. Johnson settled into third, maintaining position to the flag with Nick Fox running in for fourth. Meyer moved up to fifth late in the moto after working his way up from a
slow start. Nick Jackson ripped up the start straight on his KX450 to lead the Open A charge onto the track, grabbing the Catallia Foods holeshot money. Zack Williams was quick to get by with Jerry Robin and Henry Miller in tow. Robin took over on lap two with Williams staying close followed by Nick Schnagl. Miller soon dropped out with unspecified problems. Robin and Williams stayed close until the last lap when Williams had some kind of problem and dropped off the pace. Robin snapped up the win while Williams managed to hold of Schnagl in the final dash to the line. Brennan Myers and Riley Kroone rounded out the top five. Jackson held the early lead in moto two before Miller, Williams and Schnagl got by on the first lap. Miller went the rest of the moto in the lead with Williams pretty close. Robin worked his way into third passing Schnagl early in the moto. Schnagl was fourth over Myers when they finally crossed the finish line. This ends the 2016 Super Series, before the competition continues in October as the 2017 series begins. Season Closes at Joliet MX Wilmington, Illinois - October 9 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography
O
n October ninth Joliet MX opened the gates to one of the few motocross races they run through-out the year. It was also a special day with Gared Steinke, a professional rider out of California at the track for an exhibition race. There was the Stank Dog Pro Challenge calling all A riders to come out and go for the big prize of trying to beat Steinke and of course the cash. There was also a ride along where anyone could go out on the track and ride with Steinke which was fun for everyone getting to ride with him for the several laps. It was some great fall weather, and while there had been a lot of rain through-out the week, the lines were shaping up really nice. The motocross track has undergone some great changes, the biggest being it runs in reverse now, along with some new sections to make things even more interesting. Overall it was a fun day for everyone, and a greatturn to keep all the classes interesting. The Challenge was underway during intermission with Justin Kelly out of Lamoille, IL taking the holeshot with Steinke and Zach Martino all running together down the grass start ripping out onto the track. Kelly held off Steinke for several sections until he grabbed an in-
side line coming down the step-up to take the pass for the lead. Right behind him was Martino now going to battle with Kelly over several jumps. Hitting the back straight Kelly took off back into second with Steinke now running away from the pack. It was a lot of fun for everyone and brought the entire track up to the fences to check out the race. Later in the day things got heated up with the 85 Beginner riders putting in some great battles. In the first moto Max Williams took the win followed by Ryan Crowley and Colin Nash. The gate dropped on the second moto with Williams pulling out to a pretty big gap, getting chased by Jeff Unland and Crowley. Drake Brummel took over third briefly while up front Williams went down and couldn’t get the bike going. This moved Unland into the lead with Brummel and Crowley still in the mix up front. Going through the techniKyle Smith ran off with both moto wins in the Quad 90 class. cal stuff in the back
Vintage class winner Davey Fitzpatrick.
Crowley turned on the heat making it all the way to the front by the finish of the lap. Nash was back on the gas after a bad start and soon enough was fighting for third. The laps went by as the group was battling hard, Williams was making his way up to the front. Nash was finding some great lines and on the last lap was able to get by Unland to take over second. They came across the line with Crowley taking the win and overall. Nash ended up in second. 250C was underway next. Earlier in the day Scotty Scamen took the win in the first moto ahead of Davey Fitzpatrick and Brandon Elliott. They came down the grass hill starting off the second moto with Scamen pulling the holeshot and not looking back. Behind him was Elliot and Carter Pomaranski. Coming around the sweeper Fitzpatrick was on the gas taking over third and pushing forward as they moved into the back section of the track. Fitzpatrick was on a mission to get up front, pushing his Yamaha hard and taking over second down the straight on the second lap with Pomaranski holding third. Out front Scamen was riding hard with no mistakes, making it hard for anyone to catch him. On the last lap Pomaranski suffered bike problems, allowing Elliot to slide into third. Coming across the line it was Scamen sweeping the motos for the overall, Fitzpatrick in for second overall and Elliott third. CYCLE USA, December 2016

65 Beginner was another one to watch today, with a lot of passing going on. In the first moto Tanner Haddon took first followed by Coleton Elliott and Gavin Roth. The gates dropped for moto two with Cole Mccoy getting out front being followed by Elliott and Haddon. They came down through the grass and hit the track with Haddon flying around the outside and jumping all the way to front. On the second lap Mccoy was able to get around on the table top to take over second with Roth charging up from the back putting pressure on for third. They kept it on the gas riding hard as Roth finally got a pass to stick and take over third. By this point Haddon was on the move out front to cross the line for the win. It was a great day out at Joliet MX for their last race on the motocross track for the year. Finale at D17’s Megacross Mendota, Illinois - October 8th By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography
M
egacross opened the gates for the last time this year, kicking off the final round of racing under the lights in Mendota. The track was looking great tonight with several fast lines forming through-out the evening, making for some really good racing. The riders were out in force to get in on the last race of the year, and the bat-

tles got pretty heated as the night went on. Racing is winding down in the Midwest as the dreaded winter is closer than one would like. The new indoor facility the Megacross crew has been working on will be a welcome place to ride once that snow hits. Things went smooth as ever and Megacross will certainly be back at it again come spring. The 65cc class hit the track early tonight, and with the days get-
ting so short it was already dark when the heat races started. Coming off the line it was Landon Lee jumping out front with Charley Ravencroft and Riley Roberts right behind him. As they bunched up around the tight right hander things got mixed up a bit with Branden Wereski taking over third. Wereski made quick work over the wall jump and made it into second to start the push to the front. This left Ravencroft in a battle for third with Roberts as they swapped spots a few times in the corners with Ravencroft keeping his KTM in third. The laps ticked off pretty fast with everyone pushing hard. They came across the line with Lee taking the win, Wereski in second and Ravencroft holding third. +30B/C had a great turnout tonight with a ton of passing going on through the pack. Charging out of the almost full gate was Juan Wonders taking the holeshot, followed by Jacob Fabrizius and Brent Johnson. Through the whoops Lucas Stambaugh took over third, putting pressure on the tight pack up front. Coming down the straight in one swift charge, Fabrizius took over the lead grabbing the inside before the table with Stambaugh right behind, dropping Wonders back to third. This allowed Johnson a good run and he was able to take over third. As the battle for the lead heated up, Stambaugh tipped over in the chicane boosting Johnson up to second and Wonders back to third. Fabrizius grabbed the win ahead of Johnson and Wonders. 85cc 9-13 was out on the track as the night moved along and cold really starting to take over. They took off the gates with Ian Murphy grabbing an early lead followed by Luke Jackson and Jayson Crawford. The group got bunched up in the second turn letting Jackson by as he stayed on the outside to grab the lead. Murphy was able to stay on the gas taking over second into the whoops with Crawford right behind. The battle raged on for several laps as the top three started to pull away, pushing each other to the limits. On the last lap Crawford was able to finally stick in a pass and take over second moving Murphy back to third after some really hard riding. They came over the finish with Jackson taking the win for the night followed by Crawford
and Murphy rounding out the podium. 250C was a packed class running towards the end of the night. They took of the line with Lucas Garrels pushing his Honda out front for the holeshot, chased by Mitchell Ballegeer and Davey Fitspatrick. Heading into the table tops Fitspatrick railed the outside to take over second with Tanyon Palka moving into third right behind him. Almost out of nowhere Shane Reilly aboard a Yamaha was flying through the back section starting to pick people off. He got all the way to second in half a lap, pushing Fitspatrick to third as he started to close gap on Garrels. On the last lap things got really close as Reilly stuck it in on Garrels in several turns almost getting a pass. Garrels stayed on the gas for the last lap to take the win for the night. Reilly finished second with Fitspatrick holding onto third. The books are closed on Megacross for the season with a great turnout for the last race of the season. It was a great night of racing as always with so many classes having good racing to watch; it was a fun night. The track held up really well all night with no prep needed, and there

were several lines through every corner making for a lot of passing and close finishes. With the season over you can tell everyone is already itching to keep things going just a little longer! LTM Pro-Am Weekend
Open Pro Sport Start
Casey, Illinois - October 8/9 By James and Rollanda Pinckard
I
n Motocross one of the first things you learn is to keep charging and finish strong. That’s just how Lincoln Trail Motosports finished the 2016 moto season. The first of the month started with two full days of racing on the Bomber track. The Motocross League of America rolled into LTM along with the Pro-Am. It was also rounds 10 and 11 of the Fly Showdown Series and AMA Dis-
50Jr rider Reid East - up on the pegs like a pro...we're pretty sure.

trict 17 points both days. No matter what points you were trying to gather one thing is for sure - there was some amazing racing! The Saturday race that everyone was waiting for was the Open Pro-Sport and for good reason: These guys were hauling. In the first moto it looked like it was a good day to be named Williams as Yamaha riders Zack Williams and Cody Williams were charging in the front. Cody had an issue, going down and taking him out of the moto. With Cody out, Zack was floating around the track taking the first moto win. Yamaha rider Josiah Hampen finished second with Harrison West third. In the second moto the Williams dudes were again on the gas. It was still Zack putting down unmatched lap times and taking the moto and overall win. Cody Williams finished strong in second letting everyone know the other Pro-Am classes were going to be a battle. Josiah Hempen took his Yamaha across the finish line in third giving him second overall ahead of West. With everyone standing and watching the Pro-Am class even very fast riders from other classes were making comments about the riding styles, how they stand and charge… it’s just impressive. So with all that
talk about style it’s hard not to compare riders in other classes. One rider stuck out. His name is Reid East in the 50Jr and 50 shaft/shifter classes. What makes his style so interesting to watch? Well, I always watch to see if riders are sitting too much instead of standing and attacking like the Pros. With Reid it was just hard to tell. Why? Because this is a little dude! He does stand and ride but that only takes him about two inches off the seat. Even with that challenge he was plugging away for four motos every race day. In the 50 shaft shifter class Reid East finished tenth the first moto and ninth the second. Up front in the class in the first moto Yamaha rider Talan Smith took the win with Bryar Horton second and Jackson Fritch third. In the second moto Smith won as Horton finished second with KTM rider Caleb Coulter third for fourth overall. Third overall went to Jackson Fritch who was ripping it up on his Honda. Reid also finished sixth overall in the 50Jr class. On Sunday the fences were lined with people waiting for the gate drop of the 450 Pro-Am. Boy was it worth the wait as the Zack Williams and Cody Williams went to war! In the first moto Cody took the moto win with Zach second and Suzuki rider Broc Gourley third. The crowd was set for an exciting second moto. Cody had a rough start, sitting in sixth after the first lap. Out front it was Zach on the throttle through every lap with Honda rider Harrison West stuck to his back tire. In the eight lap race Cody passed rider after rider to work his way to the front, his last pass of the race
would be around West. Zach could hear Cody coming and didn’t give up the line, the lead or the checkered. Zach’s 21 finishes put him on top of the podium for the day. iders were blessed with another beautiful weekend of racing dirt scoots here in Staples. The trees glimmered as the sun hit the bright orange and yellow leaves. Although it was a little windy, the overall scenery of the track was one not to forget. On Sunday, riders knew track conditions would be great. Open B lined the gates for the second race of the day. Austin Aspros on his almighty two stroke didn’t back down and pulled a great holeshot. Carter Reece and Daniel Revering followed close behind as Aspros tried to pull away. Reece caught Aspros but made a small mistake which put him in the third position. Taylor Hill and Reuben Jacobs followed in the fourth and fifth. Hill, who hasn’t raced in quite some time, was running right ahead of Jacobs but fell allowing Jacobs to take over the fourth. Hill was unable to catch back up to Jacobs but settled in the fifth position. In the second moto, Aspros yet again took the holeshot and led the pack. been having good battles all summer long, so it only seemed right for them to continue the tradition this weekend. With Aspros and Reece pushing each other in the top positions, it was hard for anyone else to catch them. Revering went down
in a corner which allowed for Jacobs to make a clean pass and slide into third. Revering was able to recover quickly and caught back up to Jacobs by mid third lap. Hill chilled out in the back and rode his own race. Three riders showed up with bikes over 40 years old. They walked up to Dale Kadlec, owner of MotoCity and asked if they could run a Vintage class. Dale was more than happy to say yes to this and seemed to be quite thrilled by the idea. Mitchel Moore and his dad, Mark, along with their friend Buddy Rudy lined the gate with their old school machines. The holeshot was a classic and got the crowd standing. Mitchel, the youngest of the three ripping on the old school machines took over the first position. He proved his skills of riding a bike very well and didn’t let the excuse of ‘it’s an older bike’ stop him from hitting and clearing a vast majority of the jumps. Among the crowd watching this race,

the youngsters. At the end of the day, the leaves still glimmered on the trees and riders faces were all smiling. It was a perfect last weekend of racing for 2016. The Kadlec family would like to thank everyone for another great season and they look forward to seeing new and familiar faces in the spring.

you could hear snickers and cheers for in a sixth overall. Brennen Long was the brave vintage riders. “You can’t say able to get up there and battle for the top you need a new bike every year after five overall. Long did a great job at makwatching this race because the kid wining his way through the pack in the secning is on a bike that is probably twice ond moto and got fourth. It was truly an his age,” said one dad who was observing amazing race full of some fun battles for the race. Not only did the weekender kids, aka adults, have a lot of fun, the real kids did as well. In the 65cc 7-9 class, Brady Karolevitz dominated both motos, as he was untouchable. Spencer Briggs was also untouchable in the second position. The rest of the field was shaken up between the two motos and had some great battles. Among those was Kaden Tabaka and Wyatt Larson. In the first moto, Tabaka held a solid third ahead of Levi Schramn and Larson who were fighting for fourth. In the second moto he held third perfectly fine. Schramn struggled a little more in the second moto and Carter Reece and Austin fell back to seventh resulting Aspros over the new double.

Motocity Bonus Points Event Event closes out the District 23, 2016 motocross championship season Little Falls, Minnesota - September 24/ 25 By Angela John and Kaelyn Hegman
M
otocity Raceway’s Little Falls hosted the final District 23 Bonus Points Event on the last weekend of September. The event, like the one hosted the previous weekend at Mankato, ran over two days with a three moto format. Each moto was worth the equivalent of an overall race on a regular motocross weekend. These bonus races not only decide the champions of many classes in the district but also pitted North against South to determine who is the true D23 champion. Anxious riders and their families filed in on Friday night, greeted by their hosts the Kadlecs, and the promise of an action packed weekend. Saturday morning revealed a massive crane on the hill with an 28

American flag waving from it and a wellgroomed track in the foreground waiting pristinely for competition. With track owners Dale and Sharon’s granddaughter Ava helping out in sign-up you see another example of their overwhelming hospitality and of how running this track or competing in this sport is truly a family effort. After the usual formalities and practice the action began. With jovial banter the Senior C riders took the gate. Jokes and fist bumps were followed by prayers and raised elbows as they waited. As they charged to the first corner Neal Kragt took the holeshot. Benny Van Cleve passed him in the first lap leaving Kragt and Mike Jenson to battle back and forth, pass for pass throughout the race. Jenson made the final pass to take second behind Van Cleve. Their second moto started
with another holeshot from Kragt. A pass early on by Van Cleve moved him into first with Kragt finishing second. This time however, Jenson had to battle Steve Sutton for third and Sutton was determined and victorious. The third and final moto for Senior C started with a third holeshot for the weekend from Kragt! Passed again by Van Cleve for first, Kragt held off Sutton who took third. The weekend’s overall racing ended with a first for Van Cleve, second for Kragt and third for Sutton. Like the adults, the 65cc 7-11 riders were excited to get to the weekend’s action started. On the gate for their first moto Dom Hegman had mechanical difficulties and stuttered while Brandon Long took the holeshot. By the second lap Hegman and Brodie Boumeester had worked their way to the front and race
leader Long. Hegman passed for the lead from your extended motofamily. That is but Long got him back just before the finuntil next year when we start it all again. ish with Boumeester in third and ChrisUntil then we will remember fondly the tian Berg fourth. The second moto Long last race weekend of the 2016 motocross again seized the holeshot with season graciously hosted by the Kadlec Boumeester hot on his heels. Hegman family. What a great way to end the seawas in pursuant and took the lead as son! Long battled to retrieve it. They gapped the rest of the pack and left Berg and Karolevitz to battle for third with Berg leading over the finish. The third and final moto of their weekend began with a holeshot from Hegman ending Long’s weekend streak. The rest of the race Long pushed hard challenging for the first but Hegman “Dom”inated every section of the track, leaving him little opportunity to pass. As Hegman led Long over the finish, Boumeester and Berg battled for third with Boumeester earning third at the end of the final moto. The three moto format ended with a first overall for Hegman, second for Long and a well-deserved third for Christian Berg. With proud parents surrounding the special event podium the announcer/ commentator interviewed the young victors. He asked them about the track, their sponsors and even nutrition. When Christian Berg was asked, “What did you have for dinner last night that got you here on the podium today?” he answered, “Noodles.” His answer was almost as cute as Hegman’s choice of race attire, regulation gear plus one really bright tutu. Humor is fundamental in motocross and luckily it is 65cc 10-11 winner Domenic Hegman abundant in the motofamily. D16 MX Season closes at a fantastic Aztalan event Lake Mills, Wisconsin - October 9 Aztalan Cycle Club
T
he final race of District 16’s 2016 motocross season took place on a perfect fall day at the popular Aztalan Cycle Club’s track. As practice got started, many of the campfires were still smoldering from a pleasant evening where many had decorated with the Halloween theme. From all accounts, the night’s activities that included trick or treating were a huge success. So much so that many were already talking about how to make it all even bigger next year. The fantastic weather allowed the club all the time they needed in advance of this race to get the track really right. Something they pride themselves on always, it showed all day as very little watering or prep was needed and the motos clicked off quickly for the 350 plus entries. In the +30B/C class, Azzie club member Jim Beckman had the best reactions off the gate. He led the twenty-four rider pack through half a lap, until Elijah Gorecki snuck past in the sand corner. The shuffling continued through the second lap as Beckman fell back to sixth. Greg Niles took over second with Tom Ferguson pushing him hard at every corner. Those two tussled over the runnerup spot all the way into the final lap, when Ferguson made a pass stick. Dave Bergeron also worked up late in the moto

for fourth ahead of Cottage Grove’s Glenn Korn. The second moto was full of action as there were several lead changes, and what looked like “last race of the season” efforts to go out with a win. As they came towards the finish line on the first lap, Daniel Lopez (23rd on moto one) hit a double hard to jump past Brad Yde (7th
in moto one). Lopez held the lead for half a lap before Yde repassed him Then on the same double he tried to get back in front on the second lap, but fell short. Lopez then went down shorty after, dropping back several spots. Dave Bergeron was riding a smart top four moto the entire time along with Beckman. By mid-moto Tom Ferguson was in second,

and taking his shot at Yde for the win, and it almost worked. Yde, after the moto, “I just rode my pace. You could tell everyone was riding hard as a few of them passed me but then they would go down and I would get back in front. It was a good battle. Ferguson overshot a back turn and went down after passing me with one lap left. The track was a little rough, but good for racing. They did a great job on the track as always, and it was a lot of fun.” Yde held on for the win as Bergeron finished second for second overall. Ferguson’s efforts to win the moto fell short, but by finishing third he still grabbed the overall (2-3). Yde went 7-1 for third ahead of Gorecki who settled for seventh after winning the first moto. The 250B class continues to show off the talent of the up and coming riders. Jake Smith put his Honda out front early, and was quickly getting challenged by the always fast Seth Doeberlein on his KTM. Smith held on for two laps before Doeberlein jumped to an inside line through the back sand corner to take over the lead. Doeberlein quickly pulled a couple bike lengths for the win as Smith comfortably ran in second. Their pace had opened a bit of a gap back to third where Nicholas Czechowicz spent the entire moto ahead of a great battle between Tyler Gamble and Ian Malinowski. Gamble got the best of it for fourth at the checkered. In the second moto Doeberlein got out front right away and never looked back. Rob’s Performance backed Doeberlein, “I pulled the holeshot this time and just kept stretching it out. The jumps and everything out there are really good so it all was great, and a lot of fun.” Czechowicz started in second and ran there most of the moto, until Logan Rusk (6th in moto one) made his way up and passed for the position. Smith finished fourth, for third overall behind Czechowicz. The twenty-five rider 250C class saw all blue out front off the start of the first moto as frequent front runner Brock Noreen led Ian Beal and Ronald Schmidt. The three Yamaha riders stayed pretty close, holding those spots right to the end as Maxwell Mayer pushed into fourth on his Honda late in the moto, getting by Devin Blume. The second moto again saw Mike’s Motorsports backed Noreen out front. 44

Gamble couldn’t repeat ahead of Mayer and Gabe Rasmussen. his first good moto, while Scheiber rode Noreen returned in the Open C class, a smart third for third ahead of Nate where he also topped both motos for the Tefler and Malinowski. win. It has been a really good season for The +50 class had a very impressive Noreen, who used today’s four moto turnout of twenty-seven riders. With sweep to pad his points lead in both classes for the District 16 championships. The 14-24B/C class is always a group that delivers some good racing, and today was more of the same. Burlington, WI’s Jake Garwood used a good jump to beat Seth Doeberlein into the first corner, and from there it was a tight race for the win that came right down to the final lap. Doeberlein pushed all the way as Garwood held on for the win. Behind them, Ian No need to pack a lunch for an Aztalan, be it the Malinowski ran in third motocross or a dirt track, the grill delivers some great food.

many of these riders having spent much of their lives racing, one can only imagine the depth of experience this group has. Even with all these riders, it wasn’t a surprise to see Frank Weiss put his Yamaha out front off the start. Weiss has been winning motos at Azzie and around District 16 for many years. By the time they hit the plateau for the first time, Glenn Korn was in control of second ahead of 2015 District 16 class champion Wayne Welzien. Another young guy in the +50 class that always rides well, Tim Boblin was in fourth, and pushing Welzien. When they swept the start area corners Boblin made him move into third as Jeff Ramsey slid into fifth, now behind Welzien. From there, they stayed close to the end with Johnathan Hyde, Mike Boyden and Paul Blower in the next couple positions. Welzien grabbed his own bragging rights in the second moto, as he led them all out onto the track on his KTM. As the laps ticked away, the same front runners pushed ahead, with Weiss eventually taking over for another victory ahead of Boblin and Korn. Boblin’s second moto edge over Korn helped lock in second overall. Ramsay also ran better in moto two, getting by Welzien for fourth in the moto and overall. Later in the +40 class, Frank Weiss grabbed the first moto holeshot once again. This time, he would have his hands full, as Mark Ottenad was on the move after a fourth place start. Ottenad moved up to second in the opening lap, then on the white flag lap, cut his way under Weiss for the win. Mark Marescalco finished third. In the second moto Ottenad got out front early and led Weiss and Marescalco across the line in the same order. John Stewart went 5-4 to finish fourth overall ahead of Jim Beckman (8-5). The 85cc 9-13 class delivered more close racing as Justin Oehlhof grabbed the holeshot ahead of Brandon Martyniak in moto one. These two almost always seem to be near the front in the mini classes, and are perhaps each other’s best

competition. Oehlhof led Martyniak for just over two laps, before Martyniak got a good drive by the barn woops for the pass. Oehlhof stuck to his rear fender, trying to retake the lead right to the checkered flag. Back just a bit, Cole Godfrey held off early efforts from Dylan Duclos for third. Duclos dropped back to sixth in the final lap as Jackson Oehlhof and Aiden McCormick pushed their Husqvarnas into the top five. Martyniak won the second moto for a sweep, this time with Godfrey finishing second ahead of Oehlhof and Duclos. These kids always put themselves in the mix, keeping it entertaining for spectators. Jackson Oehlhof won both motos of 85cc 9-11. Justin Oehlhof (2-1) got the best of Martyniak (1-2) in the 85cc 12-15 class. Martyniak did pick up a second overall in Supermini after winning both motos ahead of Cole Godfrey and Josh Bowman.
The 65cc class had seventeen riders come off the gate and early in both motos the final running order was set. Fall River, WI’s Ayden Price had a perfect day topping both motos ahead of Riley Busse and Aiden Weyenberg. When it was all done, the top five finished in the same order both motos, and were close right to the end. Gavin Templen and Ethan Ebben went 4-5. Southeast Sales/ Fly backed Price after he won his second moto, “I got a good start and just held it on from there. I pulled away as I could. It is getting rough out there, but it is good, and I really like the long ruts in the corners.” Haley Nowicki put her Yamaha into the lead out of the first corner after the start of the Women’s class, and it made all the difference. Right away Bryanne Wolf was glued to her rear fender with Alexa Duclos also close in third. The top three held thier positions, running an identical pace to the end. Kendra Tutt CYCLE USA, December 2016

won a four lap, close race for fourth place against Olivia Hix and Monica Jazwiecki. When the fifteen Women left the gate for the second moto the same riders were out front, but this time Wolf beat Nowicki into the first turn. Once leading, Wolf never gave Nowicki any easy options to make a pass. They ran close right to the finish with Duclos back just a few bike lengths. Tutt again finished fourth, with Jazwiecki improving for fifth this time around. The day’s racing ended with everyone in a great mood. There were enough spectators that the food stand ran out of many items, just as the afternoon rush was coming to an end... you couldn’t have timed that any better either. Its always sad to see a season end, and with the great weather it felt like we should be weeks away from it happening. Good thing is today left everyone wanting more... so conversations were already turning to next season. Until then, stay safe, and we’ll see you back here for the 2017 season opener in April.

MMC’s Bucky Dual Sport Cross Plains, Wisconsin - October 22 By Gordon Lunde
I
t was dry! After many years of wet events, the Bucky was held on a cool, beautiful, autumn day. The fall colors were great, there was actually traction for the bikes and everyone I met was smiling. One of the many landowners (Thank You!) lets the Madison Motorcycle Club use his field just south of the town of Cross Plains, as the starting point for this ride. It seems to grow every year and as I pulled into the driveway, I couldn’t help but notice the field was full of tow vehicles and motorcycles. Walking to registration I was met by friends, familiar faces from previous rides and some folks I knew from other forms of racing that I had not seen at other dual sport events. At one point, it looked like an old road racers convention as several retired pavement pounders I knew met at the riders meeting.

The Bucky was originally an enduro ride for serious off-road riders. Some time ago, the enduro ended, and after a few years the club began talking about reinventing the ride as a dual sport. The success of another dual sport ride that some of the club members were involved with prompted MMC to retitle the Bucky as a dual sport ride, and now eight years later, it is considered a “must go to” event. Riders are challenged by the rolling hills and steep bluffs of the country side around Cross Plains. New off roaders accept the challenge of the ride that tests their skills at nearly every turn in the woods. The steep hills are the biggest challenge because even though there was no rain, the valleys stay shaded all day and the trails never truly dry out. There is always mud and slick grass to deal with. More experienced riders either cruise like the newbies just to enjoy a nice relaxed ride or pick up the pace and test their skills as well. Then there are the experienced off roaders and enduro riders that make a race out of the day’s ride and push themselves and their buddies to finish as fast as possible. I found myself moving over

and letting many riders pass me during the day as I often was riding along slowly looking for good photo spots. One of the areas that taxes new and experienced riders is the farm section just before lunch at the Wisconsin River Sportsmens Club. It is a huge field consisting of deep, black, loam. It requires a top gear, high speed ride, sitting back on the machine and letting the front tire float on top of the loam. Trying to ride slowly through it will get you stuck in this black goo.... ask me how I know. The mix of talent and skills makes for an interesting ride. In the end, everyone
has a good time. Of course there are always some who have bike problems or crash, but they all have plenty of stories to tell over dinner at the Cross Plains American Legion Hall. Each year dinner is held there after the ride, landowners are introduced and thanked and many door prizes are handed out courtesy of the many sponsors. The Madison Motorcycle Club was established in 1924 and is affiliated with the American Motorcyclist Association holding AMA Charter #2. More information is available at madisonmotorcycleclub.org and on their Facebook page.
Krystian Janik had a big day sweeping all four motos in the 65 and 85Jr classes.
Sunset Ridge closes out ‘16 Walnut, Illinois - October 16 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography
T
he sixteenth of October marked the last race of the season for Sunset Ridge MX, and it was a great day of racing without a doubt. Today was the Nick Hoffman Memorial race with one lucky rider receiving the Dream Your Life-Live Your Dream Scholarship Award. The award this year went to Krystian Janik for his dedication and hard work. Today was also the third leg of the TriState Challenge running between Sunset Ridge, Red Bud, and Wildcat Creek. There was a lot of rain in the forecast, however Sunset got just enough overnight that the track was in awesome shape come the morning. There were
some new additions on the track as well, with more plans in the works. A few new jumps here and there and corners reformed, all very nice to see. Things got underway with Supermini putting in some great races. In the first moto it was Patrick Murphy taking the win followed by Brandon Martyniak and Cole Godfrey. They got things started in the second moto with Zennon Shain out of Coal City Illinois pulling out front for an early lead with Murphy and Martyniak right behind him. As they rounded the second corner Murphy pulled into first. Heading over the ski jump Godfrey was back in the mix and made it all the way to second, bumping Shain back to third as they headed to the back of the track. The group was staying close through every turn and Martyniak started making
Quad C rider Michael Verdun railing his way third overall.
moves, pushing back into third and grabbing second as they rounded towards the finish of the first lap. From here the stage was set for the rest of the moto. They came across the finish with Murphy grabbing the win along with the overall, Martyniak in second and Godfrey third to mirror the results of the first moto. Open C was a crazy race out there today. In the first moto Nate Rega won with Kyle Hollenbeck and Austin Cobb rounding out the podium. In the second moto the gate dropped to Nick Wuertzer pulling the holeshot leaving Mike Carter and Jordan Tornow in the chase. Heading up the hill Tornow went inside to take over second pushing Carter into third. As they came around for the second lap things had changed up in the back of the track with Wuertzer opening a large gap up front and Rega now in second with Hollenbeck moving into third. Heading through the rollers Hollenbeck took over second as the two would start going back and forth for a few laps. On the last lap Wuertzer pulled off the track and just sat there letting everyone pass him. This put Rega into the lead with Hollenbeck in second and Jordan Tornow into third. The overall went Rega, with Hollenbeck in second and Tornow taking third with a fifth place in the first moto. 250B had some great battles as well. In the first moto Connor Mullowney took the win followed by Stuart Schwagerman and Dylan Boyd. The second moto got underway with Mullowney getting out front for the holeshot with Schwagerman and Ben Ibianskas CYCLE USA, December 2016

chasing him. Boyd was on the move after a bad start, picking up several places and now dicing with Ibianskas. Heading back down the hill from the start Boyd was able to get around taking over third and continuing on his push to the front. The battle waged on for several laps with Boyd putting the pressure on harder and harder. On the white flag he finally took over second putting Schwagerman into third while up front Mullowney had made a good lead for himself. 85Jr was looking good out there today with a great group of riders. In the first moto Krystian Janik on his new Team Green Kawasaki ride took the win followed by Lucas Geistler and Luke Jackson. The gates dropped on the second moto with Thomas Wojtasow jumping
out front with Geistler and Janik in hot pursuit. Around the second turn Geistler went hard outside taking over the lead with Wojtasow holding on for second. Heading over the first table Janik made his move for second and started the run for the lead. Into the back roller Janik got a good run cutting inside and took over the lead while Jackson had been also charging and took over third leaving Geistler in the middle for second. They battled this way for several laps up to the checkered flag where Janik took the win. This also gave him the overall for the day, with Geistler in second and Jackson in third, rounding out a great day of racing at Sunset Ridge MX. It was a great day with the weather warming up to comfortable level. From

D17 Geneseo Hare Scrambles Geneseo, Illinois - October 2 By Austin Wells
A
brisk morning in the small Illinois town of Geneseo was the place to be for hare scramble racing on the first weekend of October. Each fall WFO Promotions holds an AMA District 17 race at the Minnaert farm just outside of Geneseo. WFO officials and volunteers did a great job of setting up a course with a ton of new trail for the 190 racers. Some of the new changes that were made for this event included moving the AA class start 50cc and 65cc racers across the field to a different piece of timber, never seen by mini bikes before. In the 50cc 4-6 class, Austin Burns continued his win streak to 12/12 in the WFO series. Runner-up position was awarded to
Geneseo local-boy Kade Heilman. Ashten Tritsch rounded out the podium in third. The 50cc 7-8 class saw a new winner atop the podium. Brady Dillbeck took his first win in the series, followed by Ayden White and Jack Allgeyer.
Levi Fortune showed up in the 65cc Beginner class and stole the win from Kyle and Cameron Walker. Jayson Crawford took the 85cc win over Easton Morgan and class newcomer Kyle Walker. In Women’s, Katie Redell stepped up to the plate and reigned victor over current points leader Allie Roland. BriAnn Stocklen made some last lap passes to fill the last step on the podium. The morning C classes saw 86-200cc C class riders take the top three overall spots. Elijah Otterbach, Jhadyn Walker and James Adkisson were the three top guys. Brandon Griffiths took the 201Open C win by about four minutes over Brian Goerdt and Joseph Dowjotas. +40C was topped by Jay Porter. Jeff Ellingsworth finished second ahead of Mike Stutzman. After some course alterations, some of the best dirtbike riders Illinois has to offer took to the Geneseo woods. To no surprise, Cody Barnes was first around the first corner and led the AA pack into the woods. Through the first lap, there was a great 4-way battle for the lead. Barnes, Adam Bonneur, Shane Klimek, and Colt Converse all dicing it up, swapping positions in the field sections. As the day went on, Barnes gapped the field. That was until Bonneur found his groove and made up over two minutes on the young Sterling, IL native. Then Bonneur made his move and never looked back, taking top honors over Barnes. When asked for a race report, Bonneur, “I went down as soon as we got into the woods. Worked my way back up to Barnes and crashed in the mud. Then I ran Barnes down and took the lead and the win. I'd like to thank Fun Mart, Fly, Hinson, YNS Designs, Maxxis, G2, DP
Brakes and Works Connection for their support." Converse edged out Klimek for third. In the Open A class, Benjamin Schmidt topped Colten Zuidema and Jarred Hall. In 251-Open B, Wyatt Edwards would top the podium, with Tyler Dwyer and Peter Kavsky finishing 2nd and 3rd. Shea Dickson took the Quad A class win over Kyle Burnham and Riley Bruggeman. Derek St. Clair took top honors in Quad B, besting Brent Coyle and Ryan Bausch. Martin Returns to Millville Millville, Minnesota - October 9 By Rolfe Otterness
J
eremy Martin made a return to his roots and pounded out a couple of motos to get the 2017 Spring Creek Super Series off to a strong start. As might be expected he was out front all the way to take a couple moto wins, but one moto a bike problem bit him and he had to head out early for a flight so he missed the second set of motos. This opened up an opportunity for another local racer who has had some recent success at the pro game as Henry Miller nailed down the overall wins in 14-24A, 250A and Open A. Even with Martin racing, Miller had the pace to keep him in sight and with the Geico Honda rider off the track he had way too much for the other riders to contend with. This was the first event in the 2017 series, as mentioned previously. A Spring Creek tradition by now, where everyone gets the opportunity to try out their new classes or new bikes for coming year without waiting through the long winter months. As a reminder that winter isn’t far off, the weather started out on the colder side and practice laps were made in jackets and the heaviest gloves possible. Later in the day it finally heated up to seasonably warm so it was a pretty decent October day. Rider entries totaled 64

about 550, an excellent turnout for the last race of the fall season. The weekend featured various activities including the Saturday nite. One special event held today was a Destry Abbott fundraiser. Over $3000 was collected via auctioning off donated pro jerseys and gear, and other donations. This is to help out Destry and his wife who were both struck with serious illness this past year. Sam Wise led the Open A riders through turn one to grab the Cattallia

Mexican Foods holeshot award, then soon displaced by Martin. Henry Miller then slotted into second and the two riders showed the kind of pace it takes to run in the nationals. Martin gapped Miller a bit every lap to take a secure win. Wise held third over Bryar Perry at the end of lap one, but Perry blasted by and ended up third at the checkered. Wise maintained fourth to the end with Riley Kroone taking fifth. Wise ripped up the start to lead going
into moto two but Miller was on his tail and surged into the lead. Miller built his lead by the end of the moto while Wise motored on to hold second at the checkered with a bit of a gap over Zack Archer. Fourth and fifth went to Chase Becker and Trevor Lind. Bill Logan jumped out to an early lead in the +40A class with Mike “Big Daddy Luoma pursuing in second. Logan held on for the first two laps under pressure. With Bruce Gates lurking in third something was bound to happen. Gates zapped Luoma and Logan on the next lap to take over and went on to win over Luoma with a nice ride. Logan crossed the finish line for third with Matt Grall and Mark Powers rounding out the top five. Luoma made a dash for the lead in moto two, leading the way for lap one. Gates was on his tail and made the pass on lap two, then edged away over the next few laps while Grall put a move on Pat McNamara to take over third. When the moto ended Gates led by about five
seconds to add to his total of hundreds of moto wins over the years. Luoma maintained second with Matt Powers snatching third on the last lap from Grall and Mark Powers taking fifth. Jesse Jacobsen and Cameron Skaalerud surged to the front as the 85cc 9-12 class hit the circuit for their first moto. Jacobsen led the first two laps under heavy pressure from Skaalerud, then they swapped positions and Skaalerud led with Jacobsen right on his fender until nearly at the end of the last lap, when Jacobsen bit the dirt at the bottom of Collarbone hill. Skaalerud took the win with Jacobsen retaining second and Evan Payer finishing third. Fourth and fifth went to Gavin Tilford and Brandon Espe-Tiegs. Tilford jumped out early to lead the Jacobsen/ Skaalerud duo for the first two laps, but then Skaalerud took control of the race. Tilford had pressure from Jacobsen but held onto second for another lap until dropping back. As the checkered waved it was Skaalerud securing the
win followed by Jacobsen just a ways back. Tilford held third with Payer pressuring him at the finish. Luke Geis improved on his seventh place in moto one to take fifth. Town Creek, D16 Trials Black River Falls, Wisconsin - October 1-2 By Shari Huber
W
ith the first weekend of October came the Town Creek Trials in Black River Falls, the last event of the season for the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association. Again, Trialsmaster Dave Jelinek set up sections to challenge the Novice through the Champ classes. Section highlights included the “Big Zipper” for the upper classes; Advanced, Expert and Champ, and the “Little Zipper” for the Novice and Intermediate riders. These sections require riders to weave back and forth over a long log. In another section the Champ class were the only riders to tra-
verse up the steepest climb, the “Butt Crack” to the amazement of fellow riders and spectators. Dave also includes many off-camber turns where the riders must turn back up a hill, when finding traction is a challenge due to the sandy soil. Town Creek Trials is a joint event with the Upper Midwest Trials Association, a tradition for many years. It is always nice to reunite with riders that we only see a couple times a year. With the scent of campfires many enjoyed the low fall temper-

Kyle Nelson takes the Overall Wraps up D23 Championship as well 2016 Dist. 23 State Champion Kyle Nelson
Mazeppa, Minesota - October 16 By Paul Otto
T
he Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club put together one of the most diverse courses one could imagine. With a beautiful fall October day, conditions couldn’t have been any better. Campers were also treated with clear skies and a full moon illuminating the night’s festivities. It’s always a gamble
Macro rider Jacob Peters
to put on a race mid October, but the Golden Eagles had lady luck on their side. This race has seen the likes of torrential downpours, being nicknamed “Mudzeppa”, to snow showers with winter apparel for riding gear. October comes with some really cool advantages too. Harvest season creates some of the craziest high speed sections were riders are looking for gears that bike manufacturers use on their street bikes. Thanks to the farmers that allowed the club the use of their land so riders could twist the throttles wide open. Creeks that are normally dry created some interesting crossings and entertainment for spectators and there seemed to be a handful of trees that hung over the trails, just low enough that you had to do a little limbo to get by.
Normally, riders start with dead engines but with the access of a motocross track the club put the starting gate to good use. Most off-road riders aren’t familiar with sitting behind a gate with their engines reving to the moon waiting for a gate to drop. One rider was very comfortable with what was going on. This rider whom needs absolutely no advantage as it is was none other than Jerry Robin. At the drop of the gate Robin put his motocross skills right to work as he grabbed the holeshot and instantly pulled away from the pack. Once out front Robin rode a pace unmatched and cruised to the win. As the rest of the field in the AA class fought for second place, all eyes were on the two riders fighting for the championship. Nick Swenson did what he had to do and got out in front of rival Kyle Nelson. Nelson with a bad start also, had an issue with some downed riders blocking the trail. Once cleared, Nelson not one to panic knew he just needed to finish the race for the championship. With a third place finish Nelson took his spot as the 2016 AA State Champion. Congrats to Kyle on a great accomplishment. Well deserved. Nick Swenson can hold his head high as the rookie took second overall in the championship battle. Look for great things from him in the future. Macro rider Ethan Anderson didn’t make things easy on his quest for a championship. The #91 rider came into the last race with a lead, but getting off the start in eleventh place wasn’t going to keep him in the top spot. His saving grace was that second in points Ruslan Johnson also had a bad start and wasn’t able to capitalize on Anderson’s misfortune. Anderson made his way up to seventh at the end as Johnson took fifth. The boys had their parents in a mad calculator battle trying to figure out what place they needed to finish in for the championship. Great job boys. Your parents should be proud. A nice and close battle in the 250C class had Ben Colvin pull the holeshot and lead Austin Nelson by two seconds and Derek Kulzer by seven on the first CYCLE USA, December 2016

lap. Kulzer on a Suzuki wasn’t interested in following the blue crew in front of him and put the hammer down and took the lead before the second lap was done. Kulzer found his grove as he then pulled a growing lead over the men in blue. Colvin’s race started out on a high note, but things took a turn as he had some misfortune on the final lap loosing a manageable lead over Nelson. As the checkered flag came out Kulzer took the win as well as the Championship followed by Nelson and Colvin. Sydney Van Moer had a season most only dream about. The #80 in dominating fashion took the Girls 9-15 class by storm and posted w’s a cross the board. Van Moer has won every race she entered during the 2016 season and Mazeppa was

no exception. Starting a minute behind the Premier class, Von Moer actually made her way up and passed the seventh place finisher within the three laps completed. Look out boys as this little girl could be a force when she gets older. Congrats Sydney on a undefeated series and a state championship. Open A rider Dan Illies didn’t disappoint as he once again took his Husaberg to the front and didn’t look back. Drey Lacroix and Dan Liedahl kept him honest for the first lap. Liedahl made his way around Lacroix but then made a hug mistake allowing Lacroix and Paul Reschke get by. From here on nothing changed except Illies continued to pull away as he not only took first in Open A, but also the Overall for the A class and the state title.
The Illies household has done pretty well this year as son Travis took the win in Pee Wee and also took home the state title, bettering his dad by winning all the events on the year. They will need to expand the man cave to accommodate all these wins and titles. Seems to be a problem everyone wished they had to deal with. The Vet A class has been a year long battle between Curt Plazak, Garrett Hansen, Jake Hinkemeyer and Brandon Hansen. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on who you are Curt Plazak was a no show putting a halt to his quest at a very obtainable state title. Instead, the Hansen brothers took the lead on the first lap with Garrett in first keeping their hopes alive for the title. Lap two had Hinkemeyer with his own agenda split up the brotherly love by moving his #41 KTM into second, putting Brandon back to third and a long shot at the title. Garrett Hansen came away with the win and a hard fought state championship. It was great to see this battle all year and the comradery that ensued along the way as all four riders would gather before and after the races to talk and reminisce about the day. Two riders come ot mind that should be commended for just being involved in a sport that can take it’s toll on the body. The Golden Masters class is for anyone that is 70+ years of age and can still throw a leg over a bike and navigate the challenges that lay before them. Not only do Jim Erickson and Donald Kruger take on this challenge but they also are involved with their own motorcycle clubs, helping to keep the sport going by maintaining trails and helping put on Enduro’s and Hare Scrambles. Anyone with the passion to ride off-road hopes they can ride as long as Jim and Donald have. Thank you guys for giving us hope that we can still get out and be involved at any age. You are both inspirational. May you have many more years of riding.
Well that wraps up a very successful year of racing by all. Some have won and some have lost but whoever had the most fun is always the biggest winner. Thanks to all the clubs and volunteers for all their hard work putting on what we would like to think is the best off-road series around. Get involved via joining a club or participating at the District board meetings. Your involvement is the only way to keep the trend of our sport healthy and alive. Please take the time to check out the new rule proposals. The annual Membership Meeting is Saturday December 17 at 1:00 pm at the Bloomington Event Center/ Knights of Columbus. The off-road banquet will be January 28th in Little Falls, MN. Echo Valley wraps-up 2016 Brookston, Minnesota - October 9 By Samantha Laderer
W
ith winter weather upon us, each weekend is becoming a gamble of riding time. Luckily, Echo Valley was blessed with one last weekend of beautiful weather. Both Saturday and Sunday started out a little chilly, but that didn’t stop the riders and spectators from coming out. On Sunday riders woke up to frost on the ground, but with the sun making its way over the tree tops it wasn’t long before it was gone. The track was able to hold the moisture very well, which made for good riding conditions. The Open B class race was heated from

the very beginning. Colton Lampi pulled the holeshot with Ryder Hanninen not a foot behind his rear tire. Casey Hultgren, Lucas Giardino and Kollin Lund rounded out the top five. On the second lap Lund hit a soft spot and ended up going over the bars, unfortunately suffered a separated shoulder. With Lund down it slowed things down a little, but that didn’t stop Lampi and Hanninen from going hard on the rest of the track. The two went back and forth giving one another a good run for their money. Toward the end of the third lap, Lampi slowed and let Hanninen take the lead. “I was hoping he would keep going,” said Hanninen, “I was having fun.”
As Lampi slid back a few positions and let others continue with their battles Giardino took over the second position with Hultgren in third. Tim Rasmusson was making his way through the pack and passed Brady Love for the fifth position at the end. Second moto went in Lampi’s favor again with another holeshot as Hanninen and Giardino were close behind. Lampi yet again toyed with Hanninen for a few laps before making a small mistake and falling back. Giardino was then hot on Hanninen’s tail as Hultgren and Rasmusson battled for the third position behind them. Hanninen overalled in the first position with Giardino, Hultgren, Rasmus-
son and Lampi behind him rounding out the top five. The 125 two-stroke class saw a few new riders moving up from the 85cc classes. Curtis Biorn, Mitch Petrik, Dominic Lindquist and Andrew Wedge were among those. Biorn dominated the class as soon as the gate dropped. Bret Holland, the oldest rider in the class, followed close behind Biorn and came close several times to making a pass. On the last lap, Holland was finally able to make a pass. Petrik and Lindquist were in the mist of battle not far behind. Petrik had a race or two more on the bigger bike than Lindquist, which gave him the advantage. Wedge followed behind the top four and played it safe as it was his first race on the bigger bike. Two gals, Alyssa Storlie and Linzy Lavalley joined the fun to get some extra seat time. Second moto again demonstrated some
good battles in the class. Biorn took the holeshot with Holland behind him and they fought hard for the top position. Holland tried to make several passes but couldn’t get around. Petrik was able to stay a step ahead of Lindquist and Wedge again. The two girls rounded out the pack. Although this race weekend was at the end of the 2016 season, it marked the first race for the 2017 series. The races concluded mid afternoon with plenty of day light left to enjoy. All the riders said their goodbyes to their race family and friends with a high five or a hug. It was another great season of racing at Echo Valley and many new memories had been made. Teri, owner of the track, as well as her family and staff would like to thank everyone for their support this year. They hope to see some familiar and new faces in the spring.
