Also, we’re hearing of more rule/ class changes coming to multiple disciplines in each district - be sure to keep an eye on District websites over the winter.

From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It is late November all of our awards have been ordered and ceremonies are being finalized. Prizes are being collected by the class reps, check the web page for all the details for your type of competition. You should also be receiving a letter in the mail if you have qualified for an award. Class winners will need to include jacket or hoody sizing, the rest of the winners will need to respond that you will be attending to receive your award or send in the money to have it shipped. If you do not respond the award will not be made. Please watch your mailbox and get the needed information back to us in a timely fashion. Once again we will be accepting pictures for our awards program. If you finished in the top three of your class you need to submit a picture with a good resolution via the website for the program. We sent four Congress representatives to the 50th Annual AMA Congress that was held in conjunction with the AIM EXPO. This was my first time attending the Expo and it was really interesting. Anything related to motorcycles, ATV’s or side by sides is on display. The emphasis of the event was the need to create a new generation of riders and racers. We did get our work done as well. I will list a few of the changes that passed committees. Keep in mind that the AMA Board of Directors still has to ratify the changes. The biggest change in Motocross is that the upper age limit in the Youth classes has been changed from 16 to17. This assures that no 16 year olds will be forced into the A class. Racers can still advance but will not be advanced via the

National System until they are 17 on January 1 of the current season. Schoolboy 1 and 2 will now both be 12 to 17 years old. In the 50cc classes if a motorcycle does not come with a foot brake one may not be added. Numbers must be a minimum of 5 inches, solid block numbers, no outlined numbers permitted, no shading and fluorescent colors. In order to define the time at which a rider is deemed on track and may not receive outside assistance a rule has been added that states once the riders machine has crossed the starting line they are deemed to be on the track. Outside assistance may only occur in the designated mechanics area. There will now be only 2 Pro AM classes, 250 Pro Sport and Open Pro Sport. In Off Road the KLX110 now comes as a 112 so the upper displacement limit has been bumped up to 112cc. There were numerous changes to vintage rules in most forms of racing along with a new multi lane hillclimb competition. More to come at the annual meeting December 16th. We will be having several board positions open for 2018. Some I know of at this point are the Flat Track Quad Rep position as Mark Olson is stepping down. We want to thank Mark he has done an incredible job as a class rep, one of the best we have ever had. He will be missed. There are other open positions in Motocross we need some new volunteers. Please submit your name if you can help. You can email myself, or the district office with your name and a position you would like. Watch the website and Facebook pages for the time changes to our meeting. The event center changed our schedule a bit and our fall newsletter had gone to print prior to the time changes. We also are in need of a webmaster or two. I can’t thank Jamie Romfo enough for his stellar services over the past years. He has done a great job of keeping our site on track, and updated. Remember that the advancements will be coming out in late Nov/ early Dec. You can go the AMA Race Center and look up your RPV if you have any question as to your current RPV. As the campsites filled to capacity on Saturday and the racers geared up for practice an excitement was felt throughout the facility. In addition to the thrill of what was a new track for many was the thrill of riding that track with Minnesota’s motocross hero and two time 250cc Motocross Champion Jeremy Martin. As a surprise treat Martin rode

he Midway Motocross Park in Kellogg hosted the second of the two District 23 ARMCA special season-end Feature Events, the Southern edition. The two Special Feature races in the 2017 Motocross Championship series were single dates - one North and one South that consisted of a day of racing with a two moto format, each moto counted as a single race and was scored accordingly. This made these two races incredibly important to racers who desired the class title as there was a maximum of 50 points available at each weekend’s race. As intended, this drew class leaders from North and South together for head to head competition ultimately deciding who would become the true Motocross State Champion for the twenty #299 Colton Steiger got a great jump on the 14-24B class. seventeen season.

Martin’s speed, grace and style on the track was matched by no one but it was his love and appreciation of the sport off the track that was truly amazing. Gracious and humble his presence was the highlight of most people’s Saturday and all everyone talked about. Sunday’s racing was filled with sunshine, warm breezes and great competition. Early in the schedule was Schoolboy 2. In both motos #23 Josh Boaz took the holeshot with Gavin Janovsky closer than his shadow and Nick Paige in third. Boaz and Janovsky pushed each other faster and faster and passed through the previous gate drop of +40A riders. Together in both motos they took corners and made passes on some of the fastest old guys in the state to finish Boaz 1-2, just ahead of Paige.

Recently turned 25 years old and anxious to dominate, fan favorite Joe Perron lined up with the +25A class for the first time. A crowd lined the fence as the gate dropped and #308 Nick Jackson seized the holeshot. Perron was nipping at his heels through the dirty dozen as number Matt Klein kept pace with them. Perron waited for his opportunity and took the lead as Jackson fell back giving Kline second. Perron finished the moto jubilantly in first place. In the second moto Jackson again took the holeshot and held off Perron for a lap. With mere inches to spare Perron went high on the outside of the finish Bike drawing time.... line corner and pushed through the rough straight away past the cheering mechanics pit for the lead. The moto finished with Perron proudly taking another win ahead of Jackson and Kline. The cheering and celebrating as each moto came to a conclusion was often accompanied by a fist pump from competitors and moto family. But nothing that day was as anxiously anticipated as the bike drawing. D23 members who raced in both featured events and a minimum of eight other rounds of the ARMCA D 23 State Motocross Championship Series qualified for entry. The 2017 YZ250F was generously provided by Larsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cycle and a group of mx promoters. Everyone waited patiently as Mike Quinn congratulated all the racers and family on an amazing season of racing. clapped and congratulated him he approached the stage. Young Dominic Lindquist who drove for hours with his family to race his first time at Midway was in shock as he posed for pictures and shook hands. The reality slowly sunk in that he had won the bike! When asked if he had a good day and would come back to race at Midway again the definitive answer was, “yes!”. Sunday and the 2017 Motocross season ended with new stories to tell of champions and championships won and lost. As the racers claimed their trophies, packed up their gear and hugged their moto family, they already spoke of the next year and all the great racing that awaits them in the 2018 D23 motocross season. It was a fitting end to the season for sure! Aztalan’s big end to 2017 Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 16 By Bambi Yogerst

other nature finally delivered Aztalan short track two days of great weather for the 2017 season finale. It was quite welcome after the wet season they’ve had on short track weekends. With that weather came a fantastic turn-out. Kicking it all off on Saturday night, the stands were packed with spectators to watch the almost two hundred entrants race their wheels off in not only the regular points classes, but two special events! First the Super Seniors participated in the 5th Annual Ron Bean Memorial Race which was rained out the month before. This event honors long time District 16 rider Ron Bean, who passed of cancer. Sixteen riders fifty years of age and older split into three heats to vie for position in the main event to win and have their name added to the Memorial trophy! Heat winners Jim Kirschbaum from Fox Lake, Wi., Mike Anschutz from Sturgeon Bay and Dan Vanmoos of Friendship started on the front row in the main event. lowed by Brad Boughton, Anschutz and Dan Peterson. Just before mid race the red flag came out due to Scott Ellis going down in turn three. Thankfully Ellis walked off on his own as the bikes fired back up for a complete restart. Anschutz got the holeshot with Kirschbaum and Broughton right on his back wheel! Broughton dropped back during the next lap as Kirschbaum looked like he was going to make a pass at any moment. With the white flag out they were side by side going into turn three, Anschutz staying low as Kirschbaum went high to get past the lapped riders in turn four. Anschutz held his lead and became a repeat winner of the Ron Bean Memorial Trophy! Actually, this is Mike’s third time winning this event, Congratulations!! The second special event of the evening was the Women’s Dash for Cash, a Charlotte Kainz Memorial race, in loving memory of Charlotte Krainz and her passion for racing. The dash consisted of the top five finishers from the Ladies class which had fourteen entries! These lovely ladies were Morgan Monroe, Megan Funk, Annie Wyman, Brooke Chromy and Hannah Lange, representing three states. At the green light of the five lap dash the girls were off. Monroe jumped out front to go on for the

win as Wyman finished second ahead of Funk. Following the victory celebration was a birthday celebration in honor of Charlotte’s birthday. It was a wonderful weekend for racing to say the least! Each rider may have had their own reason for being here, but every one of them had the same goal: to win race well, take home some hardware and the Championship tshirt that each and every rider received at sign up. The weather forecast called for rain but it was hot and clear making for outstanding racing. The LTM crew prep included loads of sawdust and sand making for a great track for every rider. The Illinois State Championship and Pro Am bring the best from the state as well as all Chase Sexton delivered great rides over the midwest to com- and elevated the event for all to enjoy.

ages flock to see him do amazing things on the track. Kids look up to him and wish they could ride and be like him. Yes I saw him do impressive stuff on the track - he was super fast and showed his pro level fitness as his lap times dropped every lap (a sure sign of hard work and desire), but for me his most impressive move of day came off the track. After one of his motos he was resting behind his van when a 50cc rider came in from his moto and was waiting in the heat for his crew to return. Sexton walked across the road and put the little dude’s bike on the stand. That action is one you don’t train for, it comes from whom you are. The impression he made on that young man may change him for life. A life lesson and impression that will for sure have a positive imprint on this young man. So when riders wish they could be like Chase Sexton - keep this side of him in mind. There were thirty-nine riders not so happy to see Sexton line up in the Open Pro-Am class. In the first moto, with the crowd at the fence, Sexton gave everyone what they were looking for. Sexton was both fast and smooth, taking the win with KTM rider Jacob Baumert second and Wisconsin’s Blake Hansen in third on his Kawasaki. In the second moto Sexton was again out front and flying as Baumert was strong in second. First moto third place finisher Hansen had company, fighting

for that next spot and he eventually dropped back to ninth. Honda rider Bryce Backaus stepped up and took third for the moto after his fourth in the first moto. In the 250 Pro-Am class Sexton was again flying and took both moto wins. Jacob Baumert was a strong second with local Honda rider Blake Copeland third in moto one. Baumert didn’t finish in moto two, leaving the door wide open for the runner-up spot. Yamaha rider Michael Hicks was on the gas and put in his best ride of the day to finished second for the moto, giving him third overall after his first moto sixth place finish. Second overall went to our true local ace, Blade Copeland who is a long time Lincoln Trail Motosports rider. Copeland had amazing rides and his third place in the second moto gave him second overall. 85 Open had twenty-one riders fighting for the State Championship. As with the Pro classes, this race brings out the best of the best. Team Green is Kawasaki’s top amateur program that has hosted many champions in the past. Being a part of this program isn’t easy task to obtain. Illinois rider Krystian Janik has this honor and it’s well-deserved. When the gate dropped it was Janik quickly finding his way to the front. Being the overall winner in the 85Jr class and State Champion he found himself against 85Sr and Super Mini winner and State Champion Edger Lewis. Lewis charged hard but

couldn’t match the pace of Janik and had to settle for second while Janik took the opening moto win. Third went to Yamaha rider Mason Lutz. In the second moto Janik and Lewis were again out front before the finish on the second lap, but Janik slid out and went down. With his bike facing backwards on the track Janik kicked his KX to life as several riders made their way past. Out front Lewis was doing what he does at LTM - laying it down at a very fast pace. Behind, Janik was on a mission that saw him advance to third by the last lap. Ryder Thompson was running second as Janik approached him on the track and did everything he could to hold the spot, but Janik made a quick pass and set out after Lewis. Janik charged to the last second but ran out of time as Lewis crossed the line taking the overall win as well as his third District 17 State Championship. The Vintage class is often the subject of discussion. The rule of the class is you have to be on a bike at least eight years old. As a result you have riders on a wide range of bikes and with the rule of no “A” riders it is attractive to a number of riders for various reasons. Some have ridden for a while and their bikes have just got to the eight year mark. Others have an older bike and decided to come back to the track and race while plenty buy an older bike and use this class to get started in the sport. Whatever the reason this class has had a big increase in rider count. Seventeen riders were on the line and when the

gate dropped it was Eddie Kline out front and running. Kawasaki rider Dan Hall was second with Yamaha rider Nathan Reed third setting the final order right away. In the second moto Kline was again out to take the win, adding Illinois State Championship winner to his resume. Another class with growth is the Woman’s class. Women racing today ranged from 13 to 52 years old on Super Mini style bikes to tricked out 250fs. The best part of this class is the bond and support these riders share on and off the track. One thing all the class wants to know is how can Kawasaki rider Alyssa Cole be so fast? In the first moto Cole motored away with Tina Carter second and Emily Smith third. In the second moto Cole again ran off and hid, giving her the 2017 Illinois State Championship. Carter finished second for the moto and overall with Smith again third. The +25A class had more than a few familiar D17 faces. Justin Kelly showed why he’s known as a long time A class fast guy. In the first moto Kelly said ‘see ya’ and sprinted away, showing for sure he still has A class speed. KTM rider Shane Mills finished second with fast guy Jonathan Six third. In the second moto Kelly again was out front to take the win ahead of Mills and Six. Though it seems like Kelly had it easy some of the other guys in the class were the Brill Brothers, Matt Schambach and Damon Gabbert, fast company for sure.

The AA class saw Minnesota fast guy Nick Swenson come to play. Matt McDonald grabbed the holeshot, but it was Colt Converse who led the first lap. McDonald, Austin Wells, and Swenson all traded positions for the first half of the hour 45 minute race. A front-end washout with two laps to go put Wells out of

he Minnaert Farm, just north of the farming town of Geneseo, IL hosted rounds 9 & 10 of the 12 race WFO Promotions Hare Scramble Championship. The Saturday event was a makeup race for bikes only for a rain cancellation earlier in the season. The WFO crew got permission from neighboring landowners to use some fresh property that hasn’t been used in years, giving the afternoon racers an eight mile loop with plenty of tight, technical, virgin trail. On Saturday, Travis Lentz took the 50cc 4-6 win, while Jack Allgeyer grabbed the 50cc 7-8 victory. Levi Fortune was the kid to beat in the 65cc 711 class as he stomped the field by nearly six minutes. Ashley Hall took her third win of the season in the Women’s class, extending her points lead. Local boy Keegan Minnaert took the morning big bike race overall, along with the Open C class win. Jayson Crawford snatched the 200C win, along with second overall. Bill DeCicco was victor in the +30C class and Jeff Ellingsworth topped +40C aboard his Minnesota’s AA rider Nick Swenson refueling Beta. contention. A Wet Staples Hare Scramble Staples, Minnesota - September 24 By Paul Otto

ake Hwy 10 to County Rd 7, take a left at the dome - you have arrived. Now try to get by the gate keeper without authorization from the boss. Even the “do you know who I am” didn’t work for this situation. Luckily the boss was nearby and reluctantly let me in. Staples is a wonderful place to go not just because of the track but the great owners and the hospitality they give to the riders. With the blessing of a neighbor the Blomberg duo had big plans for this year’s hare scramble, having an additional 40 acres for the riders to enjoy. There were long days cutting new trail in anticipation for a great weekend. Only one problem was mother nature decided to let lose four inches of rain mid-week and another inch and a half the night before. Something no one wants to see. Well a majority as there are some that still enjoy playing in the mud like when they were kids. So, with all the rain the call was made to cut out the new stuff so

we could enjoy it another time. A smart move as its better not to tear it all up for one race and lose it forever. Premier saw Ryder Gerulli grab the holeshot and pull a good lead before having bike issues. Taking full advantage was Caleb Sledd as he took over on lap three and never looked back. Matais Merten closed in for second. It was fun watching these three battle the elements and each other as throttle control was of no concern. Grip and twist it around every corner with mud flying and spectators ducking for cover. PeeWee rider Zachary Brown started off the season mid pack, but has really come along. Brown proved that the mud wasn’t going to be a factor in him getting his first win on the season. Stone Petta is going to wish for rain at every race if he can get results like this. Placing no higher than sixth on the season Petta put in a great ride pulling out a second on the day. Wrapping up the final spot was Cooper Anderson who kept pace with Petta for the first three laps. Madison Herzog returned to the action

matching her debut race with a third place in the Girls 9-15. Allison Siebenaler has been extremely consistent all year with seconds due to that pesky Aundrea Artmann who’s been taking all the wins. Our small bore 200cc class had a battle for the win as the lead changed hands to five different riders. Cruz Wahl was in line first as he got the holeshot, then Luther Crum beat him to the scorer’s table on lap one. Not giving up Wahl regained the lead on lap two only to get passed by Chanler Lokken in lap three. Wahl wasn’t finished as he managed to get back by Lokken and set the pace for laps four, five and six before mother nature grabbed him and wouldn’t let go. Cody Smith had it in stealth mode as he slowly made his way through the pack and took advantage of Wahl’s misfortune. Wyatt Mueller creeped his way into third which, his best finish on the year. Isaac Newport starts off the year behind the eight-ball missing the first race, recouping from an injury, so he hit the second race of the season in 200C and CYCLE USA, December 2017

took the win. Not one to shy away from competition it was decided that he would jump up to the 200B class where he immediately made an impact. Placing on the box his first three races and now taking a win. As impressive as this is, even more so is that Newport also took the B overall in the process. I’m assuming the A class will be in his plans for next year. Senior A rider Rob Newport was one proud papa. Showing some tears of joy for his son Isaac’s accomplishment, but some speculate that they might be tears of sadness as Isaac was only four spots back from dad in the A/B overall. It’s been brought to my attention that there has been no mention of the Senior B class. The points leader has won every race to this date and there has been no mention of it. So, to recap the Senior B race, Eric Keranen set a blistering pace on lap one which gave him a big enough lead to continue the lead on lap two. Unfortunately, Eric may have pushed a little too hard in the beginning while Jason Naughton kept a nice pace and reeled in the leader and made his move on lap on the final lap due to the deterioration of the trails and the number of riders getting stuck from all the rain. In the end Keranen ended up in third as the unmentioned

points leader Jesse Szykulski snuck in for second. It was no surprise seeing Curt Plzak take the win in Vet A as he is undefeated this year. The surprise came to see he took the overall A win. As a season veteran to the series this is Curt’s first overall. We’re still putting an asterisk next to it as the race was cut short and it was a mud race. Still a win though. Congrats Curt. Woodstock closes out 2017 Grayslake, Illinois - September 8 Woodstock MX

eason finales always have a different feel to them. Aside from the battles out on the track to determine a potential year-end championship, the events are usually more casual. Everyone is in a good mood and looking to take it all in before another long off-season. This was exactly the case in Grayslake as the Woodstock MX team wrapped up their 2017 season. No one was in a big hurry to end the evening. Riders and family members were all smiles and there was a little extra hooting and hollering out on the track between buddies bouncing off each other. It was a great night. Perfect late season racing weather rewarded everyone here tonight as the fall harvest orange moon appeared, adding a nice accent on the skyline as the sun faded away. Early in the evening Aiden Biersteker put on a show in the eleven rider 50Jr class. After topping the heat race, he jumped out front in the main and inched his way ahead of everyone with each lap. Ottawa, IL’s Connor Cooper was quick to get into second and then held it to the end. Lincoln Paxton came out of the second turn in third with Meadow Thomas on his rear wheel. Those two stayed close all moto with Paxton taking third by half a bike length as Mallie Arnold finished in fifth. The Women’s class has seen some good racing all summer and tonight Franklin, WI’s Bryanne Wolf returned to put a stamp on her good season here. 20

Dropping the hammer right off the starts, she never let the competition sense a bit of opportunity as she led every lap of the evening for the wins. Erin Pusateri settled for second in the heat race behind Emily Smith, but turned it around in the main to run in second all the way. A good mid-pack battle saw Brooke Kennebeck prevail after a hard fall in the heat race, finishing fourth this time out. The 85 Open class saw another regular shine... Dale Kathan rode well all night in the A classes, but bad luck robbed him of the results to show it.

Scott backed Edgerton after the final, “My race went pretty well. I got out front and the track is good. My Dunlops are hooking up great and I just put down smooth laps. I had good lines and stuck with them all night.” As the class turned some fast laps, Ryder Beth held the runner-up spot ahead of Talan Zollers and Charlie Nissen. Nathan Bills had a good tussle with Ryan Koepp to come out on top and wrap up fifth. The 250A class had a light turn-out,

missing the front running regular Woodstock KTM guys. This said, it was one of the most action filled races all season. Dale Kathan set the stage by winning the heat race ahead of Cesar Vega, Justin Wolf and Rj Mackenzie who hit the ground late in the race courtesy of a Wolf block pass.

#58 Scott Anderson and Denny Hacker lead the way into turn one in the +40 class.

In the final Kathan got the drop and looked ready to repeat. Mackenzie was in second with Wolf and Vega right behind. It showed they were hungry for a win and the cash payout. Wolf was pushing Mackenzie hard before sliding down on the third lap. Mackenzie was still all over Kathan and as the white flag came

out they went side by side through a large bowl corner, then the following whoops. Entering the next tight bowl they got together and both went down. Vega and Wolf got stuck behind the two downed riders for a second before Vega squeezed through the frantic rush they all had to get moving again. Mackenzie was up in time to cut off Wolf and finish second behind Vega. It was an exciting moto from start to finish. Later in the evening the 65cc riders hit the track. 65Sr class rider Deegan Cooley quickly got to the front on his KTM to shine ahead of Benjamin Blazek. Cooley has been consistent out here all season and it would be safe to expect this to continue when racing resumes in 2018. In 65Jr, it was a different story. Nate Bierbom grabbed the lead off the start, leaving heat race winner Preston Zollers to fight his way past Kain Jennison while holding off the twelve other riders. Zollers took over second as they finished the first lap and then went after Bierbom. Three laps and many different lines, Zollers then found his chance through the long sand whoops. The pass took two corners and the whoops to pull off, but Zollers was once again out front. While Zollers enjoyed the final laps before taking the win, Riley Busse climbed his way up to fourth behind Jennison, just ahead of Owen Bills and Kallin Thomas. Even with plenty of racing through the rest of this busy weekend, everyone took some extra time roaming around the pits to chat and send the season off with a smile. Rumor has it most if not all the Woodstock events will be running here in Grayslake next season - but you never know... so until next year, this was the last of racing under the lights for this group. I like many others are already looking forward to what we hope is an early and dry spring! The Woodstock team is already promising more and better. Perfect! CYCLE USA, December 2017

The battle started right away through the whoops as Derek Roberts was looking to get out front, taking over third through the back tables. Fabrizius mounted a charge to stay right behind Roberts. egacross was back at the end of September for the final race of the season. There was a great turn-out tonight with everyone trying for the last bit of points and riding time. With rain early in the season causing a few hiccups things got much better as the year has went on - and these last months have flown by. The track has been evolving over the season as well with changes happening frequently and a very solid setup by the end, making for some great races and tight battles. Tonight was no exception with many races coming down to the last lap, some the last corner and it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get more exciting than that! 125cc was a good race with everyone pushing the limit all the way to the finish. The gates dropped to the group charging hard to the first corner with Gavin Sienkiewicz taking the holeshot followed by Noah Lee and Travis Ward. Ward made the charge through the table tops to take over second. Down the straight Hunter Billingsley moved through the pack to follow Ward and take over third. As the laps ticked on Ward was on a mission looking for a way around Sienkiewicz. Coming down to the checkered flag Ward made a final move to the inside through the sand before the finish and was able to take over first with a strong effort from Sienkiewicz to get back through the next two turns. They crossed with +30A rider Charles Buffum going to fourth place. 34

Running in second, Hastings unfortunately tipped it over on the last lap allowing Fabrizius into second and Brent Johnson who was working on a good ride into third. After a great ride under the lights it came down to the last lap, it was certainly one to watch and showed everyone putting it on the line. It wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the final megacross without some fast racing in the A class. Kyle White has been putting in some great rides all summer and was the one to beat all night. In Open A the group took off to the first turn with White grabbing the holeshot and taking off through the whoops. Right behind were Cody Vanbuskirk and Rj Mackenzie keeping some tight quarters through the next few turns. The pack spread out a bit through the table tops as Mackenzie mounted a charge to the next corner to get the inside and second place from Vanbuskirk. Van-

buskirk took back second after a few laps of going back and forth. Then Mackenzie found himself in the fight with Logan Skaggs over third. As the laps went by Vanbuskirk had made his way up to White and was trying hard to find a way around. They came across the checkers with White taking the win, Vanbuskirk in second and Mackenzie third after a hard ride. The lights went out for the last time

this season at Megacross and it was a great night. The track looked great tonight with multiple lines and a lot of different spots for passing, making for some great racing! Riding in Mendota will continue indoors this winter with Megatraxx up and running, as we already look forward for the next season to starting back up! In moto two Kalies was looking to up the ante as he got part one right by grabbing the lead off the gate over Baumann. Woolf got through turn one clean, running in third with the big group of riders behind him. As they came around on lap two, Kalies had a sizeable lead over Baumann who was under pressure from Woolf. Gollubske was running fourth followed by Youngthunder, Zurn and

Kyle Kohls. Going into the whoops Youngthunder made the pass for fourth. Starting the last lap, Kalies had a good lead over Woolf who moved into second, followed by Youngthunder, Gollubske and Kohls. Baumann lit the fire on the last lap running in the sixth and made some nice passes to move up the leaderboard. Zurn went down giving a spot to Baumann right before the first whoop section. Going into the woods Baumann made a pass on Gollubske and right before the checkers grabbed another on Youngthunder, salvaging a better overall finish. Kalies took the overall with a 2-1 beating Baumannâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1-3 scores. Woolf with his spectacular ride in moto two gave him third overall. Gollubske went 5-5 for fourth besting the 3-7 of Zurn who rounded out the top five. The 65cc class saw #26 Brody Barth rocket into the lead and never look back. rom one week to the next, this year it seems you never know what type of weather were going to get. Last week we had fall racing in 90+ degree temps with the AC on in the camper. A few days later at the Wittenberg MX facility we were blasting the heater and having big campfires to keep warm. Track prep for the weekend was above par as usual for the Fantasy Moto crew. Saturday they hosted an open ride and on Sunday the racers poured in to hit the circuit for one of the last district points races for the year. Being a Yamaha and Kawasaki contingency race also brought in some extra racers. The dirt at the Wittenberg facility when conditions are ideal can be like chocolate cake and for race day things were shaping up nicely. The sun was out; track watered, tilled up and ready for action. 250C was the first group on Logan Kresal and #26 Brody Barth after they the track for the day and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m swept the top two spots in the 65cc class. sure all were excited to get after it. By mid moto, Youngthunder went down moving Zurn into the number three spot for good. Late in the moto, Kalies was all over Baumann and was trying every line to find a spot to make a pass. Baumann continued to hold his lines and kept the position. At the checkers it was Baumann holding off Kalies, followed by Zurn, Vanlyssel, Gollubske and Woolf. and Kyler Gollubske rounded out the top five. At the checkers Kresal finished second with a small gap over Torp. Ottenad and Gollubske held fourth and fifth. Moto two again saw Barth out front right away as a good battle for second developed between Torp and Kresal. Everyone stayed consistent and everyone finished in the same spots in moto two as they did in moto one. Jordan Biese had a nice day going 1-1 in 85cc 9-13 over Jackson Oehlhof, Kaydin Bosin, Gavin Templen and Bailey Tuoriniemi. He also took the win going 1-1 again in the 85cc 12-15 class over Justin Oehlhof, Reed Klinger, Bosin, and Tuoriniemi. Big Brother Carter Biese took care of business in the 250B class, but where he really shined was the Two Stroke Open class. Simple really, if you have a two stroke and were looking for a fun second class to ride this was it. The success of the new Two Stroke B/C class got Scott Biese thinking if one two stroke class is good, maybe another for all riders is even better. If you were thinking well, I don’t stand a chance racing Carter, his father made sure to give everyone a fighting chance by making the 250cc bikes start backwards and making Carter wait until the pack got the first straightaway before starting. Both motos it was Wyatt Liebeck with the holeshots. After lap one, things started to tighten up and the A guys were coming through the pack catching 125 and B riders. Liebeck was pushing his

Supermini to the max and I don’t think he could have twisted the throttle any harder. This was pretty exciting to watch as you knew Carter would be coming strong and of course he didn’t disappoint on his home track by catching the leaders late in the moto and getting the win. Both motos came down to the last lap and was fun seeing all the different two strokes on the track at the same time. The only thing missing was someone on an old YZ490 or CR500. Maybe next year? AMA ATV Championship Ice Race Coming to Wisconsin

he 2018 AMA ATV Ice Race Grand Championship is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2018 in Wausau, Wis., where competitors from across the country will compete for national titles. "The AMA ATV Ice Race Grand Championship features the country's fastest amateur ATV racers competing aboard highly modified, purpose-built machines that allow them to race on an oval course," AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant said. "The AMA is excited to team up with the Wausau 525 Group to host this year's event and to award AMA National No. 1 plates to class winners." Racers will also be competing for two prestigious awards: AMA ATV Ice Racer or the Year, which honors the most impressive rider on the ice, and the AMA ATV Youth Ice Racer of the Year. "Quad and motorcycle ice oval racing

has a huge presence in our area," said Cara Spatz, Wausau 525 Group operations director. "The Wausau 525 Group is thrilled to be teaming up with the AMA to bring a national ice event to the Wausau 525 Track and to be able to offer these racers their own, much deserved event at our track." ATV ice racing in the Midwest is incredibly popular, particularly in Wisconsin. "Some local racing groups trace their history back over 30 years, and it shows in the quality of the racers and level of innovation, particularly in the un-studded classes," said William Bell, race director for Rib Mountain Riders Motorcycle Club. "The challenge for these riders will be to see how

they compare to the best quad racers in the AMA on Feb. 10. The Wausau 525 track is praised as the best anywhere, so all the racers are in for a hot weekend on the ice."

Boaz beats Millville mud Millville, Minnesota - October 7 By Rolfe Otterness

osh Boaz made the best of tough situation as he slithered around the Spring Creek track and secured six moto wins for a perfect day. The early motos were a test for all as the incessant rainfall that plagued the track for much of the year was back again on Saturday, leaving the track in a most-greasy state. Some time and track work helped shape it up and it was in fair condition by the second set of motos. As has been the practice for the Spring Creek race series, this last race in 2017 actually counts as the first points race for the 2018 Super Series so it was a nice â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;2018-startâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for riders like Boaz, Carson Wittman (minis) and Ian Miller (C classes) who all wrapped up three overall wins. Ian Miller blitzed the start straight and peeled through turn one to grab the early lead as the 250C competitors hit the track. Miller seemed to have an edge and started to gap the pack a bit in the slimy conditions. Cody Clough settled into second but found Todd Miller on his tail as they continued to traverse the goo. Ian Miller went in for a secure win with a decent lead while Clough persisted to hold second by a few bike lengths over Todd Miller. Trevor Bonnicksen moved up a bit after a mediocre start and took fourth at the flag with Daulton Schoon rounding out the top five. In moto two Ian Miller was on the gas and sliced through to take the lead quickly in the drier conditions. Todd Miller held second through lap two before Bonnicksen challenged and took it away from him. Ian Miller went in for another solid win with Bonnicksen, Todd Miller, Dan Dvorak and Clough wrangling the next four slots in the finishing order. Chase Becker led the way as the Open A class entered the fray with Dylan Narel and Travis Muller in close formation. Becker was piloting his YZ in smooth fashion through the muck of the first moto and held on for the first couple of laps, but Narel had a slightly quicker 42

pace and took over command. Narel ran it in for the win with about a three or four-second gap over Becker. Bryce

Moto two saw Narel and Becker close on the start as Becker grabbed the lead for the first lap. Narel once again stole the front-runner position with Becker then staying about four or five-seconds behind until Narel took the checkered. Keithsburg Closes 2017 Keithsburg, Illinois - November 19 By Austin Wells, photos by BriAnn Wells

andy Oaks Campground in Keithsburg, IL hosted the final event of the 2017 WFO Promotions and AMA District 17 Hare Scramble Championship. 174 riders came out to withstand the 39 degree temps for the bonus points at hand. The big talk of the day was the newly crowned Sprint Enduro and AMA National Enduro champion Steward Baylor, Jr. was in the area doing some hunting and was going to make an appearance. Not only did Baylor show up, GNCC regular Cody Barnes, Minnesota fast kid Logan Kittock, newly crowned District 17 hare scramble champion Matt McDonald, and the rest of Illinois’ best were ready to do battle. McDonald led around the first corner with the other AA riders in tow. Barnes and Baylor quickly made their way to the front of the pack with Team SRT Offroad’s Austin Wells and fellow KTM rider Colten Zuidema not far behind. It didn’t take long for Barnes and Baylor to gap the rest of the field. Barnes led the duo most of the hour and 45 minute race until Baylor grew tired of eating roost. Baylor made the move and turned on the burners, gapping Barnes by about 30 seconds at the finish. Wells rode to a lonely third overall. Colt Converse, made a late race charge to finish fourth and take the WFO championship.

he Shadow Valley Drifters played host to the two-day District 16/23 event at the Cedar Lake Arena, where riders from Minnesota, Wisconsin as well as a strong South Dakota contingent did battle at the final flat track event of the 2017 season. The Lange Brothers Racing team out of Campbellsport WI., consisting of Hanna, Parker and Brady Lange, each turned in solid performances on the weekend. Hanna Lange (the oldest of the siblings) traded victories in the Woman’s class with Zoria Martens. The youngest member Brady won the 250 Am class on Saturday and topped Open Am on Sunday. Last but not least Parker almost swept the four Pro class events, finishing second on Saturday to District 23 front - runner Andrew Hook. A chat with Hanna revealed that herself and Parker are both in their second year of competition after returning from a short hiatus. “We are in the works of changing the team name for the 2018 season to include a sister” she explained. “ We are open for suggestions!” Long-time District 16 veteran and referee Danny Vranna enjoyed a successful weekend as well. He scored three wins on Saturday, then another on Sunday. In the four wheel division Keegan Hackbarth from Antigo, WI brought home the gold in both of the Pro-Am Quad classes as well as the Open B main events both days. A big finish for District 23 saw Waylon Hastings win the highly competitive 65cc class both days, in effect giving the youngster enough points to notch his third consecutive class championship. Final D16 Trials Weekend Mauston, Wisconsin - Sept 30/ Oct 1 By Kevin Huber

n September 30th and October 1st the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association event was once again held on Noel Smageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s land near Mauston, Wisconsin. This year the dry weather and sandy hills made it hard to get much traction for the climb. The dry conditions were anticipated so section difficulty was lowered to assure most riders were able to complete them. Scores were a little higher than usual but this didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t discourage the riders from doing their best. On Saturday the club used their normal method of riding in groups where riders in the same class score each other on the three loops of eight sections. On Sunday a new method was tried. This borrowed from the Illinois trials club. For this there are three riders assigned to each section, and each takes turn scoring while the other two rode through the loop of sections. Without having to wait for

the whole group to ride before moving to the next section riders were able to continue on the loop and complete four loops in less time than it takes for the normal three. When the number of entrants is high, riding in groups sometimes makes it difficult to get the three loops done in the allowed time. The new method is less affected by large numbers of riders. One disadvantage of this method is that it made for a lot of riding and you had to have some stamina to make it to the end. However, since they did not ride all loops in a row there was some time to catch their breath while they were scorekeeping. Another advantage of this system is that the riders are able to watch other class Expert class rider Tony Damhoff riders in their section while they the riders rode more loops the total scores scored. Usually, they only see the group were a little higher on Sunday. A few ridin their same class ride. Like beginning ers noted that this was the first time they riders being able to watch how the upper had scores over 100, but for the most part class riders made it over obstacles. Since they enjoyed this different way of managing the event. This was the last weekend for Trials in 2017. As part of celebrating the season there was a great gathering Saturday night with a bonfire and music provided by Ryan Gustafson singing and on guitar with Noel Smage playing drums. he first weekend of October marked the last race for Sunset Ridge, bringing a year to close that seems like it just started. The season always seems to fly past, in part because it is such a awesome time out here. The facility was looking great today with all the work from the year coming to a head, including a great layout of the track and the addition of the new 50cc track. Things ticked by like clockwork with no stopping and lots of fast racing. Today was also a special race honoring Nick Hoffman and giving one special rider the Dream your Life-Live Your Life Nick Hoffman Award. This year’s recipient was Drake Koelling out of Brimfield Illinois; it was certainly a special day. The racing got underway after some quick practice and up first was an exciting class to watch, 14-24. The gates dropped on the first moto with Nick Inman taking off to a quick lead, chased Nick Hoffman’s parents were on hand to pass by Ian Pistole and Zack Scott. Heading on the special honor to Drake Koelling. up the hill Scott took over second for several corners before Pistole fought back into second. The two were going back and forth every lap until Pistole had bike problems and had to pull off the track, leaving Inman up front with nothing but a clear track, Scott in second and Nick Wuertzer moving into third. In the second moto it was Inman once again taking the win. Scott cleaned up second overall and Kash Schnowske put in a great ride to finish third and taking third overall after a fourth place in moto one. There were some great battles in 50Sr today which was out on the #17 Alec Perry and the other Open A riders come off the line.

Schiller held on to third. In the second moto it was another long battle with Tucker leading off the start and Carpenter fighting for position. After several great attempts at getting around, Tucker held him off and took the win in moto two giving him the overall for the day. Carpenter going 1-2 grabbed second overall as Schiller finished a solid third. 250C was packed today. They took off down the start straight in moto one with Luke Jackson getting the jump on his KTM. Close behind were a lot of riders wanting the lead including Ryan Lawlyes and Ethan Snowdin. Not more than three turns later Deven Fell was on the move and already up to second going into the rollers. Going through the back of the track Fell went down, advancing Snowdin up to second. Kyle Hollenbeck had been mounting a charge after getting pinched off in the start, now all the way up to third. Up front Jackson was still riding clean but it didn’t take long for Hollenbeck to get around Snowdin for second. Matthew Speers also worked his way up to the leaders was able to also get by Snowdin to take over third at the last minute. It was an exciting race to follow and they crossed the line with Jackson taking the win followed by Hollenbeck

There was a great crowd and the amazing weather made for a great time out at Sunset Ridge MX, once again. With winter arriving a lot of people will be taking time to recoup and start looking forward to what next year will have in store. There will definitely be great racing out at Sunset Ridge and I can’t wait to get back out here.

ho would have guessed that as we headed into fall, usually looking at cooler temps, that one of the hottest weekends of the year arrive late in September at Sugar Maple MX. Open ride on Friday, Dist 16 points on Saturday and Sunday and the weekend saw temperatures well past 90 degrees for both days of racing. I don’t think we had any days above 90 all summer in Central Wisconsin, so to say the riders and families weren’t exactly ready for the heat would be an understatement. Sunday’s racing saw an increase in riders over the turnout from Saturday and there was some tight knit racing in many classes. As always, 250C had the biggest turnout on the weekend and on Sunday a good sized class motored up the uphill start into turn one. It was Michael 52

It was a bittersweet weekend though as it was my first time to the track all year. Announcements had already been made that this was the last race at the facility... and Jason was stepping away. The drive home after Sunday’s race felt a bit sad for sure. Good news came later in the season at the annual District 16 meeting that Jason’s sister Jessica Erdmann along with Keith Smart will be taking over - and racing will continue into 2018! Good news for everyone that has come to appreciate the facility. Jayden Stegora found himself in a race for third all by himself as the top two had a gap in front and Stegora pulled a bit from fourth place early on. The poor Micro/ Macro classes had a tough time with the mud. Those little tires pack in the mud and just can’t fling it out. Some of these bikes looked like they had solid wheels they were so full of mud. The Macro class ended with Maxwell Munoz taking a commanding win with Austin Holasek and Reed Haldeman following. Micro also had a run-away winner with Carter Niedzielski.

he 2017 Hare Scramble season came to an end with the Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club having to switch its venue to Spring Creek MX Park. The club made the call after losing some valuable land. It’s a shame to lose Mazeppa on the schedule as the wide variety of terrain was a favorite amongst riders, especially the wide-open bean fields. As usual putting on an event in October can be a crap shot with the weather. The last few years have been very good to us, but this year rain put a damper on the efforts. With the course all set and ready, race officials had to make major changes to compensate for all the rain that saturated it. Dan Illies navigating Although the course was through the mud shorted the consensus amongst the riders was it was still fun. Setting the pace for the day was the youth classes. Lining up first was the Premiers with a good showing of eighteen riders. Caleb Sledd put a stamp on the season by getting out front and laying down lap times unmatched by any of his competitors. In the end Sledd ran away with the win and the championship with ease. Giving the fans something to cheer about was eventual second place finisher Alexander Burdick and third place Charlie Siebenaler as the two-battled, staying within seconds of each other for the entire race. The Peewee class, which contains some of the coolest looking bikes are my favorite to watch as these little guys and gals are ripping up the track. Zachary Brown came out and led lap one but just didn’t have the speed to 54

Both class winners completed two more laps than the rest of the field. Joseph Kamrath and Darrell Prebe took their Hondas to a second and third. Jacob Stephas took his first win of the season in Open C. Stephas was also the beneficiary of the Overall C when Ian Miller had some issues on the last lap. Bummer for Miller, but he still took the win in the 250C class. Cody Smith took the win in 200C and was an impressive third overall. Another impressive ride came from Dillon Nelson as he won the Junior class and tenth overall. Our top old guys came from Jason Remer winning Senior C and Rob Pretts holding all vet C riders at bay. The Overall B class had a variety of classes taking the top three. Austin Nelson from 250B took the overall followed by Open B rider Coy Jackson and rounding out the final spot was Jayme French in the 200B class. Our top old guy was Jesse Szykulski in the Senior class, placing sixth overall and Robert Goodman placing a Vet rider in the top ten with an eighth-place overall. All these guys were winners in their perspective classes. Excellent job by all. It was only a matter of time before Logan Kittock grabbed that elusive overall win. Struggling with bike problems early in the year, he finally had some good finishes and now has that win he’s been looking for. We have a new crop of kids climbing the ladder. One rider that hasn’t hung up the boots is Craig Holasek. Holasek had to pull out all his veteran skills to

keep the rest of the field behind him. Austin Pogreba found his way up to Holasek, eventually passed him but made a mistake letting him back by and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough time to real him in before the checkers. Other notable rides came from Curt Plazk winning Vet A. Drey Lacroix who will be leaving us heading south for a new job took first in Open A. Good luck to Drey. Jeff Young continuing his winning ways in the Senior A and Dalton Kittock stepping up to the A class for the final race, stealing the 200A win. Racing, riding, enjoying time with friends and family. Whatever it is that

keeps you coming to support the clubs and all the hard work they put into these events for our enjoyment, all I can say is keep doing it. uddy Waters was back in action at the beginning of November for their last race of the year. There was nothing short of some great racing out there all day, with everyone coming to watch the race. The morning was a little wet with some showers early. This didn’t stop anyone from racing, the track got scraped up and was quickly ready to ride. While things were a little slick in the morning, it turned into some great riding conditions as the day continued. This was my first trip out to the track and it is well worth it. The views from the track and all the natural elevation make it a really cool place to check out. The races went along a great pace with little to no stopping of the riding once things got underway, it was a great program. One of the many great races today came from the Open C class. The first moto started with all the riders charging down the hill to the first corner and out front was Zach Phares followed by An-

drew Mueller Jr and Gregg Wiersema. The group stayed very close as Mueller got to the inside of Phares and took over the lead. Coming up from the back was Matthew Speers after getting pinched off on the start. Speers was making moves through traffic and caught up to the front to battle with Wiersema. After a few

turns Speers took over third and was on the throttle not letting off. It wasn’t long before Speers started to look for a way around Phares and was able to get into second. Mueller was up front riding a clean race with Speers now zeroing in on the lead, looking to make something happen. It came down to the last lap when Speers was able to get around Mueller for the lead. Meanwhile Phares was able to keep the pack off of him and secure third. Later in the day the second motos ran giving Speers the overall, Mueller second and Wiersema grabbed third overall after a great ride in the second moto. The biggest race of the day was the 125 classes bring everyone out of the pits to watch what unfolded. In the 125 Youth class the action was intense with eight 125’s singing around the track. In the first moto the gate dropped to Ruger Brown getting out front of the tightly packed group for the early lead with Kash Schnowske and Cameron Campbell right behind. Heading down the hill after the first turn Campbell made a dash for the inside and went from third to first, then started pulling away down the straight. Brown was holding onto second with Kash Schnowske right on his tire with the entire group pushing hard through the back of the track. After several laps Campbell was starting to open a big lead with the battle for the top spots

was still waging. Ryder Schnowske made a big push from fourth and was able to get to the inside of Kash Schnowske to grab third. Everyone was making mad dashes on the last lap looking to get a better finish as the checkered flag came out for Campbell to take the win. Brown took second with Ryder Schnowske third. The second moto delivered more exciting for the spectators and racers alike with Campbell taking the win once again along with the overall for the day. Brown locked down second overall and Ryder Schnowske was third. The day came to a close with the sun coming out and ending a great day of racing. The track out at Muddy Waters looks like it would be a lot of fun with a ton of natural elevation and good flow. The location is very easy to get to directly off the highway and is super spectator friendly. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been doing improvements to the property all summer and it is really looking great with a lot more plans in the works. Next season when everything thaws out, Muddy Waters should certainly be on the list of places to check out. In the meantime we all look forward to what next year will

bring, new riders, familiar faces and of course great racing!
