levels. Our long term health as an organization depends upon getting new people with new ideas onto our board, and involved in other ways. For those of you that are passionate about riding and racing consider getting involved and help us move forward for another 50 years. Each of our competition disciplines will be hosting a recognition and awards banquet starting in January of 2019. You will be receiving a newsletter with all the information for each banquet. The newsletter will contain a list of candidates for elected positions, and a list of the all proposed rules changes. We will be taking nominations and you can volunteer from the floor. Lastly we will have the 2019 schedule finalized by the time the annual meeting starts. I really hope to see a lot of our members there. Mike

From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Our 2018 season is now in the record book. It has been a good season overall for ARMCA D23, in terms of participation and memberships. Our membership numbers increased this year by about 9%, or 400+ new members. Total entries for all of our events increased as well and we are hoping to continue this trend into 2019. We have noticed a definite increase in participation at the beginner levels. In MX and Off-road both special classes that allow for a variety of different non race class bikes to be ridden have contributed to this trend. This is the first season since the notorious lead ban we have seen this kind of increase in entry level classes. It is a well known fact in the motorcycle industry that we are not attracting new riders at the levels we had in the past. There are many factors that contribute to this issue, electronic technology, competition from other sporting activities, economic factors among some of them. The industry is working on making it more attractive to the younger market in the meantime we as members need work on recruiting both old and new members alike. December 15th is the date for our annual business meeting. It will be held at the Bloomington Event Center on American Blvd starting at noon. This is an important meeting. We have a many new rules proposals to be voted on, all elected board positions are voted in at this meeting and we will have an AMA representative in attendance to answer any questions. We will bring the membership up to speed on the all of our 2018 business. We will have some board positions open that need to be filled so please feel free to volunteer as we always need the help. We need some new people, especially those with racers at the younger age

Seven women entered, of which the top five finishers in the main event went on to compete in the dash. Staples Hare Scramble Staples, Minnesota - September 30 By Paul Otto
T
he last several years the crew that puts together the Staples Hare Scramble have been faced with muddy conditions. Having to cut the race short, re-routes and all the other fun stuff that goes with it. This year, with a ton of work prepping, digging trenches and putting up new bridges preparing for another mudder it seemed as if mother nature gave in. Normally a shorter course the riders were surprised with an additional three miles of trail due to the dry conditions. The nice thing about this facility is it has it all with a nicely groomed motocross track, woods, and a grass track. The Premier’s had a big class with twenty-two riders and they entertained the crowd with great racing. The first lap
had the top four riders; Jayden Stegora, Tate Tromblay, Travis Illies and Cavan Heuer within ten seconds of each other battling back and forth for position. Tromblay and Stegora dropped off the pace but had a battle amongst themselves to the end. Tromblay was able to hold off Stegora by a mere second. Meanwhile, up front Illies and Heuer continued their battle for the gold. Heuer was only three seconds back on the last lap. Heuer then pulled the trigger and got around Ilies making him the winner on the day. All the youth classes had a good showing which is a great sign for the future of the sport. Our ladies have also shown an increase over the years. The Girls 9-15 race was cool with the number of participants as well. Right out of the box the girls were 1st thru 7th and never changed

spots. Allison Siebenaler had the fastest lap times and that put her out front for the win. Madison Herzog might have given Siebenaler a better battle, but her pit crew seemed a little slow. Her pit crew consisted of her Older brother Chaz whom unfortunately is sidelined for the rest of the year with about every tendon one has in the knee torn. Bummer for him as he had a good season going in AA this year. Gia Goodman and Cora Reschke had a close battle for the final spot on the box. The two were within seconds of each other all the way to the end with Goodman gabbing third. 200C started out with a bang. As the green flag flew to start the race it was a battle to the first turn that ended with Jaden Abbott and Luther Crum trying to use the same line. They collided leaving Abbott losing a few spots. Abbott would rebound catching Crum and the two were no more that a few seconds from each other. In the end, Abbott got by on the last lap. The Overall C winner came out of CYCLE USA, December 2018

the 250 class. KTM mounted Thomas Brown was on his game today. After a slow start Brown was able to take the overall lead on lap two and simply pull away from the competition. This marks Brown’s first 250 win as well as his first Overall C win. Wyatt Mueller pulled down second in 250C followed by Seth Hofland. Kraig Anderson dusted off his gear for his first Hare Scramble of the year. Running in the Master’s class, he didn’t skip a beat as he managed to keep Paul Bloyer who has been on a winning streak this year at bay. Anderson got out front and left Bloyer and Steve Reschke to settle for second and third. 200B rider Austin McCoy started the
season winning the opening round but hasn’t been able to back it up until now. McCoy was pushing hard and found himself behind the top two 200A riders. That’s a little incentive for 2019 whether to step up to the A class. McCoy’s competitors, Nash Kirchoff and Kyle Magnuson were within striking distance had McCoy made any mistakes. That just good racing. Vet B rider Jaime Forsland made his return after an injury sidelined him at the first round. Forsland didn’t win the race but it was a win to be back on the bike. Welcome back. John Bemis has been giving the Senior B riders all they can handle. Bemis hasn’t finished outside the top three this year and Staples was no dif-
ferent as he took the win over Barry Hirschey and Brian Hanson. The Overall A trophy went to 250A rider Jack Lane IV. Lane was out front early and didn’t give his competition any slack as he rode a mistake free race. Broc Graif has to be super pumped with a second behind Lane. This was Graif’s best finish on the year and possibly a confident booster. Graif had his hands full with eventual third place finisher Alex Tweeton whom led for a few laps before Graif got around. Matt Vandyke must have had a great sleep in his toyhauler as the Vet A rider took a big win over Coy Jackson to help pad his point for the year-end championship. Give Matt a call if you’re inter-

ested in an ATC trailer of your choice. AA started out with Craig Holasek getting the jump off the line before he took the corner wide allowing Tyler Pogreba to sneak past. Pogreba’s lead didn’t last long as Logan Kittock got around and never looked back, making it look easy as he cruised in for the win. Pogreba on the other hand didn’t have as easy of a race as he and Devin Jirik had a good back and forth battle all the way to the last lap. Pogreba did prevail with a second place finish. A quick shout out to Quentin Blomberg and crew for all their hard work putting together one of the best Staples tracks to date. Don’t forget to thank track owners Dale and Sharon Kadlec for allowing us to enjoy what we love to do by letting us use their facility. Bob Jenson did his usual magic with scoring and deserves a lot of credit for getting the scores done 12

Perfect September day at LTM Casey, Illinois - September 23 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
L
incoln Trail Motorsports hosted Round eight of the Fly Showdown Series late in September. For the first time since April the event was held in weather below 90 degrees, in perfect weather for motocross. This round of the series was on the Classic track. Rich in moto history every serious Illinois racer has done laps on this track since bikes had two shocks in 1973. Even with a strong history you still have to look to the future. Some think the future will include electric bikes. This could be the case because for the first time two riders rode electric bikes to wins. LTM is always supporting future riders and brought in Stacyc cycles, small bikes for kids to learn their basics. Lisa, manager of the pro shop is hosting these bike with a class of their own. Three year old Waylon Krispin got his first taste of rac-

ing and winning a trophy. A battery charged first bike. Long time A rider, WPS/ Fly Racing backed Adam Wright is the first racer to race the new electric ALTA here. No matter what you think of the bikes there was a ton of interest in it and when the gate dropped for +30A more people were at the fence watching than for any other class. Off the start all the riders shot toward the first turn and one of the bikes out front was the ALTA. Wright went on to take the win. In the second moto Wright pulled the holeshot and continued on to take the win. After the race everyone wanted to know what he thought. “The bike is really fast and yes, it does take some time to get used to things like no clutch or shifting.” The electric bikes were the only two out of the 333 total entries from eight states. Will that number grow? Will it be the future for everyone? I say yes. Even in the current four-stroke world,
it is cool seeing the two-stroke bike count on the rise. The 125 class is two stroke heaven. There’s nothing like the sound of a 125 when it’s on the pipe. With a tight points battle in this class you knew they would come out swinging. Yamaha rider Brodie Bennett was on it taking the first moto win with KTM rider Mason Lutz and Yamaha mounted JC Hoyt in tow. In the second moto Bennett flew to the front taking the moto and overall with Lutz and Hoyt again in tow. Open two-stroke was also full of action. In the first moto Dillon Cantrell took the holeshot and was flying, scrubbing jumps and smashing corners, then he just didn’t come around. The front brake of Cantrell’s Yamaha locked up leaving him on the side of the track watching as KTM/ Seven rider Alex Mitchell took over out front on his way to the win as Austin Crup and Kawasaki rider Jason Hendrix were locked in a battle for second. When the smoke cleared
Open 2-Stroke winner Alex Mitchell
Hendrix got the spot with Crup third. In the second moto Cantrell seemed to have his troubles fixed until he cartwheeled himself out of the race. Mitchell was smoking the lap times and took yet another win. The battle was again between Crup and Hendrix but this time Crup got into second and stayed there for the moto and overall. The 85Jr class had two strokes singing, all led by Hunter Savage. In the first moto Savage was flawless taking the win ahead of Kawasaki rider Caleb Bates and Brian Dickey. In the second moto Savage again led Bates across the line. New to the fight this moto was Suzuki rider Ethan Burns battling with Dickey. Burns finished third for the moto giving him third overall ahead of Dickey. The +30B class stormed into the first turn and when the dust settled Suzuki
rider Clint Burkeen was on the gas and gone taking the first win. Long time LTM racer Aaron Carter finished second with Honda rider Bret Milan third. In the second moto Burkeen didn’t make the call for the gate and charging to the front was Carter taking the moto and overall. Milian finished second as third went to Yamaha rider Lee Harrison. Lee is with the FCA Motocross group and often leads church service for all riders to enjoy. The Open A class had some outstanding racing! In the first moto Hall’s Husky rider Jason Gepford was smooth and fast, out front with WOPS Kawasaki rider Parker Smith second. Dawson Chesnut had his two-stroke in third ahead of Nathan McClure and Bryce Cox. In the second moto these four were back at it swinging for the fences. Smith took the moto win as Chesnut finished
second. McClure finished the moto third but the scores gave him fourth overall. Fourth in the second moto was first moto winner Gepford. Sunset Ridge 2018 Finale Vet racing Saturday and D17 Bonus Points Sunday fill out a cold, damp weekend Walnut, Illinois - October 13/13 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
D
riving through the snow on the way to Sunset Ridge MX for the Racer-X Vet and District 17 bonus points race it looked like it could be a bad weekend for racing. Sunset Ridge owners Bob and Jan are true pros on running and operating the track, so even though the weather ended up cool the track was perfect. Saturday Sunset hosted the final round of the Vet Series. Being a rain date make-up the riders were ready to settle this series battle. With championships on the line anything can happen but one thing that is for sure is great racing and good times. One rider who came Tyler Svob - Winner of the Nick Hoffman Memorial Award out swinging was Kawasaki rider a chance to set anything so it feels a little John Grewe. “I just got my suspension twitchy.” I don’t know how you would back and I put it on. I haven’t even had define “twitchy” but Grewe must have had a different idea about what it means because he was super smooth and fast winning six motos and the overalls in the +35, +40 and +45A classes… as well as setting the fastest lap times of the event. Another great ride on the day came from long time Suzuki rider Rick Munson. Coming off a double moto and overall win in +60 he had to feel like the state of Wisconsin was chasing him. WI riders Tim Doblin, Steven Sorge, Tim Dieball and Mark Mancini rounded out the top five overall. The +55 class was one of the biggest of the day. In the first moto Munson fought like crazy and kept his Suzuki out front for the win. Kawasaki rider Bill Clark from Sandwich, IL was second with Tim Boblin third. In the second moto Bryan White survived this stressful moment on the way to winning +30A. Munson ran off while Michael
Westbrook put in a strong ride for second. Third went to Boblin for second overall. Clark finished third overall. Suzuki rider Bryan White had a good day of racing winning +30A and placing second to Grewe in +35. He was the only rider to keep Grewe in sight. In +25B/C District 17 rider Scott Kooistra won both motos and the overall. KTM rider Jeffery Bridges finished second both motos and overall with Yamaha rider Drew finished third both motos and overall. In +30B/C Kooistra ran into a group of riders hungry for victory. When the gate dropped it was war. Kooistra drew first blood jumping into the lead with Bridges in tow. At the flag Kooistra took the win ahead of Bridges and Kyle Zelazny. In the second moto it was the same players out front from the start. Bridges was charging and not going to let off no matter what the cost. Attacking the track Bridges did what he was unable to do all day and took the moto win and overall over Kooistra who finished second. Zelazny finished third. CYCLE USA, December 2018

Sunday welcomed a whole new group of riders to Sunset Ridge. It was a District 17 Bonus points race and the Nick Hoffman Memorial race where we honor the life of the former factory mechanic who grew up racing the track and was truly living his dream. This year’s winner, Tyler Svob, was very grateful and his parents were very proud of him being presented the award. His parents had more than that to be proud of as Svob was on the first gate of the day in the 4Wheel C class. In the first moto he got a good start and battled in the front to take second for the moto. Yamaha rider Gage Beebe took the moto win with fellow Yamaha rider Austin Hall third. In the second moto Beebe set a pace that couldn’t be matched. Svob finished a strong second as Hall found himself in third for the moto and overall in the ten rider class. In 50Sr Cobra rider Ryder McGee told me, “I’m going to get the holeshot both motos.” When the gate dropped for the first moto it was the Cobra of McGee out front as they hit the first turn. Cobra rider Tom Luberda set a pace after McGee and made the pass for the lead that stuck, giving him the win with McGee second and Ottawa’s Connor Cooper third. In the second moto it was again McGee with the holeshot but by the second turn Luberda passed to the front for another eventual win. McGee in second was under attack from a new player this time as Joey Arnold was on the gas before working past for second place. McGee finished third for the moto giving him second overall as Arnold’s great second moto earned 18

helped him earn third overall. After racing the Vet event on Saturday Yamaha rider Ty Tyrrell was back for more on Sunday. After finishing second both motos and overall in Open A he set his sights on +25A. Tyrrell showed he is still one of the fastest riders around. In the first moto Tyrrell jumped to the front and took the win with Yamaha rider Joe Dalzell second and Chad Johnson third. In the second moto Tyrrell again flew to the front taking the moto and overall win. Dalzell and Johnson finished second and third. It’s amazing the age class riders seem to never lose their speed. ack to the Future‌ motocross style. John Martin and his gang of merry minions prepped the Spring Creek track for one last fling of 2018, also launching the first round of the 2019 Super Series points battles. Cool temps and soft ground from recent rains left the track in rideable but challenging conditions for the riders and entries totaled about 345. Winter jackets for the
spectators and maybe an additional sweatshirt for the riders seemed to be the attire choice for the day. A group of eager +50B/C riders ripped off the gate for their first moto and Larry Steuck surged ahead of the pack to lead the way for lap one. Mike Dossett was in close pursuit and pounced into the lead on lap two. Dossett began to gap the field with Steuck solidly in second and Mike Janovsky displacing Barry Weinzirl for third on lap two. Upon the unfurling
of the checkered flag, Dossett ran across the line with about a ten second gap over Steuck. Janovsky maintained his pace to grab third over Mike Halder and Weinzirl. For moto two there was some light precipitation beginning and Halder grabbed the start to lead the parade around turn one. His rein out front was brief but glorious nonetheless. Dossett was soon to get by as they thundered down to the sandwash. Dossett proved to be up to the

the moto. Smith inherited second and rode it in as Skaalerud was long gone. Austin Nelson scampered in for third with Levi Dertien and Isaiah Reidel running in for fourth and fifth. Smith roosted to the front as they started moto two, trailed closely by

The 85cc 9-12 class had a good turnout and Domenic Hegman aimed to top them all as he mastered the start of the first moto to lead the way. Wyatt Mcgrath and Jeffrey Rinkel slotted in behind him to see if they could match his pace. It was not to be though as Hegman led every lap to take the win. Mcgrath and Rinkel maintained their respective charges to hold on for second and third while Ethan Rennie and Zaine Randall motored past the checkered a small gap behind them. Moto two featured another Hegman charge as he pulled the start then led every lap to win with a big lead. Motosports Park Finale Nuke Series Championships wrap up another fine season! Byron, Illinois - October 21 By Mariska Minkus
I
t’s hard to believe fall has arrived and this is already the final Nuclear Series race of the 2018 season. As throughout this season, the Vincer family of Motosports Park put together great family activities for the weekend to celebrate the Championship Series. Saturday started with an open ride followed by Halloween festivities for the moto families. Pumpkin carving, donuts on a string contest, warm fires and haunted trails were just a few of the activities. Fun was had by all, despite the cold temperatures. Several families had camped overnight and many of the previous nights’ campfires were once again burning in the early morning. Early Sunday morning started with temperatures in the upper 20’s and a good layer of frost covering the grounds, including the newly Justin Kelly with the pass on the final lap for the win in Moto #1 carved pumpkins, but that didn’t the track prepped early for the motos to day of racing. dampen the spirits of riders ready to begin. Considering Saturday’s adversely +25A started the day out of the gates clinch their positions for this year’s changing weather from cold and cloudy with #602 Ty Tyrrell getting the holeshot Championships. Aaron, owner of Mototo snowing at one point, everyone was and #904 Justin Kelly in second on his sports Park, was grateful that the big grateful to see the sun shining and warmIllinois Powersports/ Precision Works diesel tractor fired up in the cold and had ing things up - creating a beautiful fall Honda, sporting his Spongebob costume, in full out race mode to catch Tyrrell. In the turn before the finish line jump, Kelly put his move on Tyrrell for the pass. Tyrrell wasn’t going to make it easy as they both almost went down in the corner. Kelly still on the throttle was able to make the pass stick on the downhill and then go on to win the moto. In the second moto it was Kelly with the holeshot and Tyrrell in second. Experienced riders that they are, neither one was going to make it easy Everyone had fun being in the Halloween Spirit on Race day, even the girls scoring the motos. for the other. Kelly main26

tained first and won taking the overall. Tyrrell finished with Daniel Sanders third and Michael Kingstad in fourth. Kelly afterwards, “My first moto start wasn’t that good, I’m a little rusty and had to work for the win. The second moto I got the start making it a little easier on myself. Overall great battles all day with Tyrrell and it was a lot of fun.” Every class had talented riders ready to race. In Schoolboy 1 it was Brandon Martyniak on his Yamaha and Mitchell Malaney (both from WI) on his Kawasaki battling it out all day. In the first moto Malaney got the jump for the holeshot. Malaney was running hard up front for several laps with #160 Martyniak charging to get past. By the checkered flag Martyniak had made the pass for the first moto win. In the second moto it was Martyniak with the holeshot, and Malaney pressing hard to get a pass. After another good race Martyniak had held on to the win once again. Sportland2/ JM Racing sponsored Malaney after taking second, “My motos went well. The track was awesome and I had a great time. Aaron always does a great job with the motos and keeping the track groomed and watered.” Sportland2, Clearwing, Fly Racing

sponsored Martyniak on his day, “I want to thank my parents for their support. I won both of moy motos so it was great. In the first moto, we battled pretty hard for a few laps. He pulled the start on me and it took a while for me to get around him. I would say that those few laps were
the most fun for sure. The second moto I got a good jump, and was able to hold on to it for the win.” One of the most exciting classes of the day was from the Open A riders with great battles in both motos. Starting it off was Ty Tyrrell pulling the holeshot with #23 Nick Wallace in fourth off the start. About half way through the second lap, Wallace on his Tom Zont/ Fly Racing/ Freeport Honda Kawasaki backed ride

had caught up to Tyrrell in the back woods section. As Tyrrell went to the inside of the turn, Wallace went outside and they were side by side to the step up, neither one letting up. They ended up coming to together while heading for the same rut. Tyrrell went down and Wallace took the lead and eventual moto win. Tyrrell bounced back and came in second with Rj Mackenzie third. The second moto it was Tyrrell once again with the holeshot. This time Wallace was riding on the back tire of Tyrrell right away. Wallace attempted a last minute pass on Tyrrell in the last corner before the finish line but came up short, leaving the overall win to Tyrrell, Rj Mackenzie with a solid third. Wallace, “I couldn’t find a way around him and he was riding really good, so it was tough to try different lines without losing too much time. The track layout is fun and it flows well.” Rj Mackenzie stated, “I had good battles between one of my best friends, Nick Wallace and getting to battle with Ty Tyrrell, someone I’ve looked up to since I can remember. Getting to race with a childhood idol is one of the best feelings I think one could have. It was a great day, and an even better race!” With this day’s race results determining the Barone Nuclear Series end of year Championships and Answer Racing giving away a new set of gear to the moto winners of the +25B/C and +40 classes there was a lot of great racing. The biggest group being the 250C and Open C having some close competition, and battles for positions from start to finish. The 65cc and 85cc classes also had a great turn out and close finishes. When talking to track owner Aaron at the end of the day, he had this to say, “It’s hard to talk 30

Dual District “Rumble” New Richmond, Wisconsin - October 13 By Tim McBride
T
Saturday’s competitor attendance was a startling 236. Sunday featured 202. With those kind of numbers you would think it would be a logistical nightmare, but Bobby Jo Denver, Colin Hastings and the
rest of the crew working for the Shadow Valley Drifters handled the event with amazing poise. As far as the racing went, everyone around the sport knows the rising popu-

Schmidt won on Sunday. New Richmond, WI. The threeday dual district (16 and 23) event was coined the “Rumble at the River,” and it attracted a record number of competitors. The fun started on Friday where a flat track school was hosted by Brian Bartlow and Kris Daniels featuring special guest instructors Kevin Anderson and Jeffrey Carver. They spent the day teaching riders of all ages and abilities the basics of flat track racing. They also remained on hand throughout the weekend to supply follow up tips to riders.

larity of the Hooligan class. For the first time they had to run a consolation race because of the amount of racers on hand. On Saturday, the thirteen rider Hooligan main was won by the 2018 X-Games Hooligan gold medalist, Danny Mischler via a wire to wire run. In doing so Mischler clinched the Hooligan Grand National Championship as well. “The Championship was a 12 round series featuring four separate types of tracks,” explained Mischler afterwards. “It had a half-mile a short track, a TT and a super-moto held at the fairgrounds in West Bend WI.” Mischler is sponsored by Mischler’s Harley-Davidson/ BMW and Danny Mischler topped the heavily contested Hooligan class on Saturday and clinched the Hooligan Grand National title.
won four of the twelve events along the way. Sunday’s Hooligan main event was won by 2017 X-Games gold medal winner JJ Flairty via an exciting come from behind charge that saw him emerge from fifth place to first with only a handful of laps remaining. The venue also featured a TT course on the infield for the quad competitors. Daryl Rath was the class of the field throughout the weekend. Rath was especially excited to compete against his son Tucker Rath on both days. Shadow Valley Drifters, Saturday Results: 80 Open: 1.Ethan Ramsey 2.Jack Freeman

he Wisconsin Observed Trials Association (WOTA) returned to Wauzeka on October 6th and 7th. Trials had been a tradition at the Mark
Doll farm for 28 years before Trialsmaster Pat Doll took a job as a traveling welder in 2016, making him unavailable to run the event. With Pat’s return to Wisconsin, the trials events are back. It was very evident that Pat, with the help

just happened to have extra bikes, and one each day lent me one to ride. Where else in today’s society do complete strangers lend you their five thousand dollar toy to go beat up in the woods? Man, I love my trials family.” This helped Adam become one of the ironmen of the season, riding in every event. The other ironmen were Pat Doll, Kyle Hach and Ahmet Kimball. They were all recognized on Sunday with an award. In addition, Pat Doll was the high points winner for the District 16

The only downside to the event was the weather. There has been so much rain in Wisconsin that many riders chose not to attend this event. As it turned out, the sections were very rideable and scores were in line with other events. The challenge was getting in and out of the pits. A few were able to get their trucks and campers into the pits on Friday night, but with additional rain Friday night, nobody could get in Saturday morning. They ended up lining the road with their vehicles and then riding to the pits. When it came time to leave, those in the pits couldn’t get out. Even the 4 wheel drive SUVs were sliding around. Mark Doll came to the rescue with his tractor and everyone was pulled out. The trials community always makes the best of any situation. One of our riders, Adam Gustafson shared an example. He stated, “…it just so happened that my bike lost spark the day of the event and I had just drove five hours to be there. Wouldn’t you know it, two separate guys,

Last Blast of 2018 at LTM Casey, Illinois - October 20 & 21 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
T
he last Lincoln Trail Motosports race at the end of October is filled with long running tradition. It’s been called different names like the Fall Classic which hosted the Four-Stroke Nationals and had loads of fast guys come through. Now it’s called the last Blast and it’s still just as big with an average of over 400 entries per day Saturday on the Classic Track and Sunday on the Bomber Track. It was also a District 17 Bonus points weekend, a huge event to say the least. Saturday LTM gave tickets to every person who paid the gate fee. Up for grabs was a big-tire pit bike. At intermission they drew the winning ticket and Christy Carie, mom of racer Zack Carie was the big winner! At the end of the races LTM had huge plans for the night. They planned trick or treat, pit bike races, costume contest and free food. An unreal wind storm with 40MPH winds put an end to most of the plans. They did have food for whoever wanted to brave the wind and provided 520 rolls

ered for the biggest prize of the year, a 2018 Yamaha YZ125 provided by LTM and Owen Motorsports. Every rider who raced at LTM was up for the prize so the tub was very full. When the winning name was drawn 65JR rider Jaxon Franklin was the happiest person in the place as he took the biggest win of his young life. Special thanks go to WPS and Fly Racing as well as Suzuki and others who provided contingency. Thanks also to Tim, Lisa, Drew and the whole LTM staff for providing great races and tracks all year. Most of all very special thanks goes to long time LTM Staff member Jo Newlin who passed away Saturday. A nurse for 31 years, EMT for Toledo Ambulance Service, Jo also drove the CCVA van to take veterans to their doctor appointments. Jo started working at LTM in the 1970’s, waving the flags for over 40 years. She will be missed greatly by all and LTM would like to dedicate the 2018 Last Blast to Jo Jo. ternoon winds the track was safe and fun. In the Beginner class there were thirty-three riders. Some of the riders are skilled and fast like Honda rider Logan Vaughn who won both motos. Second overall went to Yamaha rider Dylan Bible with 5-4 scores and third went to Dalton Hite with his 4-5. On this weekend there’s no telling what you’ll see and in the Open C class there was a dragon. Yamaha rider Jamie Downs was in the Halloween spirit rocking a full dragon costume. In the first moto KTM rider Luke Jackson took the win ahead of Cody Wright with Eugene Nolan in third. In the second moto Jacob Mcgee proved why he’s the points leader of the series, taking the win for third overall. Jackson finished second to grab the overall and Nolan finished third for second overall. The dragon finished 11th overall. Sunday morning the wind was gone and replaced with temps in the upper 20's. With the sun out and temps ending up in the 50's it made for a perfect day of racing and track conditions. Keeping up on the weekend tradition of costumes 50 Open rider Maverick Snider showed up to the line in his skeleton outfit and went on to fifth in the first moto after a tip over crash. Preston Ross took the win with Colton Waites second and Tom Luberda third. In the second moto Snider stayed up for third, giving him fourth overall. Up front was a great battle between Ross and Waites. Ross on the gas took a well-deserved win. Third overall went to Luberda who again put another strong ride. Some of the best racing came from the 85cc classes. In the Jr class Husky rider Peter Parenti showed amazing speed taking both motos and the overall. KTM rider Hunter Savage took second both motos with Christopher Colantoni. It’s been said you are not measured by your best day but how you react to your worst. In the 85Sr class Suzuki rider Jake Colbert and many others had just such a day. There was a huge pileup in the first turn of the first moto that took out at least half the pack. With the leaders avoiding the carnage KTM rider Talan Zollers took the first moto win with Damon Sims second and Conner Thompson third. Colbert worked his way through the pack and took eighth out of eighteen. In the second moto Zollers took the win. Colbert was on the gas besting the rest of the pack taking second for the moto. Sims finished third giving him second overall. Third overall went to the hard charger of the day Colbert. This group of racers showed you should CYCLE USA, December 2018

250C Class start as #227 Kendall Biever gets the holeshot
All Positive at Sugar Maple Hill Point, Wisconsin - September 15/16 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner
I
t’s not often that I get too excited to go to a track that I’ve been at often in the past, but heading to Sugar Maple MX for the fall double header District 16 points race weekend you could say I was like a kid in the candy store. I missed out on some open rides and the earlier race in the year so I hadn’t been to the track since last season. With new owners Jess and Keith taking over the reins, there was a bunch of positive vibes being talked about prior to the weekend. Arriving at the facility I could see right away a ton of changes not only to the track but the facility as well. Before, parking was pretty open on the hillside with only Kent’s Country Kitchen small shack on the hillside. Now, you are greeted by a brand new pavilion that has the kitchen, open viewing under a roof and restrooms with showers along with some storage area and the registration/ trophy area. The new starting line was carved out of the hillside up by the parking area instead of being way down the hill like in years past which is a blessing for an old guy like me who doesn’t like walking long distances. As far as the track went, it still incorporated the best parts, including up and down into the valley a couple times. The new spectator table looked to be an awesome addition to the topside of the track. 42
CYCLE USA, December 2018
Probably the biggest change was that the dirt looked different. After talking to Keith, I found out he purchased a new secret weapon in an attachment to his big tractor. It is a rototiller/ cultivator/ scraper

box all rolled into one. It’s nice when tracks have a pick behind the tractor to till up the soil but in Sugar Maple’s case with the majority being a clay rock base (being based on mountain) you were left
Riders flying in formation over one of the many well designed jumps
with large clumps of soil that was tough to navigate at times. The new attachment not only tilled up the soil, but tilled it into golf ball sized clumps of perfect dirt. It was pretty evident after practice that the purchase was a huge hit as everyone was raving about the track and all the sweet lines that were developing. Open C class saw some good battles. In moto one it was Dane Klinger who took the win. Michael Youngthunder was a solid second followed by Sean Badker, Kendall Biever and Hayden Zurn. In moto two it was Klinger again out front as he took the win. Biever got second in
the moto and that also gave him second overall. Badker was consistent and his 34 scores gave him the third ahead of Youngthunder’s 2-5 and Zurn (5-3). +40B/C was another class that created some good battles. Jeff Ramsey piloted his Honda to good starts both motos and ended up with the overall. Back in the racing scene after many years off was Andy Walters who had never raced at the track. After his moto Andy said he really liked the track and couldn’t believe how rider friendly it was. It showed as he went 2-2 for second overall. Jeff Oakes also making a semi return to racing went
3-3 for third. Behind the leaders, was a battle royale as Tom Brunt, Steve Lubahn and Paul Haltvick all were making passes on each other to try and better themselves. Haltvick ended up going 6-4 for fourth, followed by Brunt and Lubahn. Aiden Price was on the gas all weekend as he won all four of his motos in the 85cc classes on Sunday. Kaiden Snyder from Sullivan, WI was the top gun in the 65cc class winning both of his motos. Brecken Maas won 50Sr and Jett Wolf took the 50Jr win after winning both motos. Chad Schmitt made the long trip from Iron Mountain, MI to win the 50

Open class splitting motos with Tyler Buros, his 2-1 good for the overall. 14-24B/C had a nice turnout and in moto one it was Deven Fell from Elkhorn with the win ahead of Hunter Schueller, Elijah Tetzlaff, Max Mayer and Brady Sturm. In moto two Tetzlaff had his YZ125 singing as he took the checkers. Fell was solid in second and his 1-2 scores gave him the overall. Schueller ended up going 2-3 for third followed by Mayer’s consistent 4-4 scores. I haven’t had a chance to talk about the new 125cc Open class all year because I decided last year when the district decided to make it a new point’s class for 2018 that I was going to run it. You know, the feeling of wringing out a 125cc bike is like no other. The fun factor is through the roof and I’m usually smiling until Wednesday after every weekend of racing this class. Any twelve year old plus rider who is A, B or C ability can
race the class. It has been a good addition to the lineup and in most weekends has respectable numbers. Sunday we were the first ones on the track for moto one and being an ole fart sometimes it’s tough to get my old bones going early in the morning. After four motos on Saturday I was ready to give it my all against the youngsters. Moto one I got to watch a great battle ahead of me with Brandon Martyniak, Tetzlaff and Reed Klinger. These three kids were hauling and I soon found myself battling in the pack but still having a ball. To my surprise at the checkers it was Martyniak with the win, Klinger in second and my pit posse informed me I had a sweet ride for third followed by Jordan Stolz and Alex Romanowski in fifth. As we sat at the line for moto two in the hot sun waiting to start after intermission, it was cool talking to my competition even though they probably think that I
used to race on wooly mammoths. Again, I had a pretty good start but the trio of Martyniak, Tetlaff and Klinger were quickly pulling away. At the checkers it was Tetzlaff with the win, Klinger in second and I pulled another third because Martyniak had bike issues. D16 has a bunch of up and comers and we have riders that are giving us the recognition deserved. Part of the equation is great tracks and after the weekend at Sugar Maple I can honestly say we are heading in the right direction as a district, so keep it up! et up at 4am, travel a couple hours, race all day, drive home and you are exhausted. A typical motocross Sunday right? We all do it, and as often as possible. Well if you’re looking to mix it up a little where you can hang out, ride, race and just have tons of fun over a full weekend you better show up to the Throwdown at Sundown event in Tigerton, WI next year. Friday is pit bike and big bike practice, campfires and fun. Saturday is a casual day that leads into a frog catching contest, a toy dirt bike track building championship all followed by pit bike racing under the lights and topped off with a best whip contest. Although the frog totals were on the low side, the track building competition was at pretty epic levels. Two divisions are judged, one with props and one that is solely based on track design and I must say, there was some pretty cool layouts. The team that won had an unreal amount of cool Tigerton Sundown props including a replica finish line, campers lining the track and even a thirty second girl. As the sun set, roughly 100 pit bike racers tackled the makeshift pit bike track. One added addition this year was the Saturn car as part of the “joker” lane that each rider had to take at least one lap per race. Yes, you read that right, the crew drug a car out onto the racetrack and made it part of the track. The final event is a whip contest where multiple racers are put in brackets and then just start throwing down over a big jump that was all lit up by the United Rentals lights. When done it was Josh Philbrick taking home the honors. Sunday delivered District 16 points racing. The Fantasy Moto crew racked up thousands of dollars of swag for this weekend as a
thank you to all the loyal racers that attend the events. Goodies, from FLY, Scott Goggles, Hinson Clutch System, Twin Air, Acerbis and more. The best takeaway from the whole weekend though for me was that the 65cc 7-11 was the largest class on the day. For all of us out there scratching our heads on how to get race entries up, it’s a good sign when youth classes have some pretty full gates. Twenty little two stroke rippers took off for moto one up the long start straight that leads into the sand whoop section. It didn’t take long for the #26 KTM mounted Brody Barth to take command of the class. This kid and his family have been putting in the work and it is showing. As Barth was stretching out his lead the competition behind him was epic with battles and passes happening all through the pack. At the checkers

The track building contest was fun for everyone, with some very cool designs coming together
Barth was followed by Logan Kresal, Hayden Schumacher, Riley Busse, Ryder Skrodas, Jayden Wolf, Ethan Ebben, Chad Schmitt, Jayce Wolf, and Kyler Gollubske. Moto two again saw Barth out front. Schumacher was looking solid as Kresal and Skrodas were battling and Busse was looking to improve on his fourth in moto one. second overall ahead of the 2-3 by Schumacher. Kresel ended up fourth in the moto and overall with Skrodas rounding out the top five. In the first moto of 51cc 7-8 it was Brecken Maas with the win. Skrodas took second followed by Jayce Wolf, Cole Goedert and Zack Augustine. In moto two though, Skrodas had other plans and got his bike across the finish line first and his 2-1 gave him the overall. Wolf grabbed second in the moto also beating Maas. Maas ended up second overall with his 1-3 scores as Goedert and
Augustine rounded out the top five. Schoolboy 1 was another full class and Jayden Clough showed up to this event ready to throw-down. He put is Yamaha YZ125 out front in moto one and took it all the way to the checkers. Brandon Martyniak gave him everything he had but came up a little short at the finish. It was a good race to watch as both riders were pushing to the max. Andrew Combs made the trip down from Michigan to take third in moto one. Elijah Tetzlaff took fourth followed by Reed Klinger. Moto two was another epic battle as again Clough figured out a way to tame the Tigerton track and take the win over Martyniak. Tetzlaff had a good run getting third beating Combs and Klinger. The day wrapped up early leaving everyone plenty of time to pack and casually head home after the very full and fun weekend. Tigerton Results on page 54

he final round of the 2018 District 23 Enduro season fell in the hands of the Northern Lights Motorcycle Club. Held at Trax North MX facility with its rolling hills and vast array of technical off camber, rocks, roots and a few mud holes it allowed riders an op-
portunity to showcase what skills they have acquired during the season. Temps hovered in the 90-degree range but with some strong southernly winds and cloud cover it didn’t feel to bad or affect the riders. What did affect the riders was a different format consisting of four laps on an eleven plus mile course. After each lap a reset or rest for the riders was given
just like your typical Enduro. The course held up pretty good for about two laps then things got rough. Rocks became uncovered, mud holes got deeper, acceleration and breaking bumps got bigger and riders began to break down with fatigue. One rider that didn’t have any issues was Logan Kittock. He actually wrapped up the championship at Akeley but with a

Tanner Lokken found his grove at the end of the season. The Open A rider took the final three wins but came up short for the Championship. Volunteering at an Enduro would have given him the edge but instead it went to Paul Reschke. Jeff Young made his first appearance in the Enduro series a rememberable one. The Senior A rider with his smooth riding style conserved his energy and put down his fastest lap on the last one. Todd Sigfred was able to hold off Garrett Hansen for the second spot. Evan Sheff made his final B class appearance on top of the podium. With his nearly perfect season and placing near the top Overall his advancement to A class should be a smooth transition. Crosby, from page 53 So, this will end the 2018 season for the Enduros. It was another successful year with a variety of Enduro formats. Congrats to all who competed in this year’s events winning championships or those just out for fun. A big thanks goes out to all the promoting clubs for taking the time and energy to put on these events for all of us to enjoy. Without their hard work we wouldn’t have these events. The district banquet will be held at the Little Falls Ballroom in Little Falls on January 26th. It’s a good break from the winter to get together with old friends and make some new ones. Doesn’t matter if your receiving an award, it’s for all to enjoy. The fall newsletter will have more information on it. Bucky Beats Mother Nature for another great event Madison, Wisconsin - October 27 By Ken Schuck, photos by Chris Mulhall

ith the villages of Cross Plains, Black Earth and Mazomanie suffering severe flooding on August 21 and nearly daily rain since then the fate of the 10th annual Bucky Dual Sport was uncertain. US Highway 14 bridge at the outskirts of Black Earth is still not open. The popular event sold out in 45 minutes. Riders vying for the usual 250 spaces put a lot of pressure on the new on-line registration and payment system. The Madison Motorcycle Club gave serious thought to the need to cancel the event due to washouts on some properties and the desire to be good stewards of the land we are so generously allowed to use each year. Fortunately, the fifty or so landowners are great to work with, so with a few changes in the route and skipping some still very wet ground an ex-
cellent course was laid out for the Bucky 10. Saturday October 27 started in the dark with sound check under the lights. The morning was gray but dry as the 300+ riders departed around 8:30 in the morning. The back roads connecting the trail segments are hilly, curvy and scenic. But this year Mother Nature did not provide the burst of Fall color the riders usually see. Bucky 10 included the popular uphill challenges (red course) of Weber’s Hill, Bong’s Hill and Parrell’s Hill. The optional challenge “Teeter-Totter” was rebuilt this year but still caused a few riders to take a spill. Proving that “momentum is your friend” Luke Padrutt launched, using the narrow board as a ramp, to complete a heel clicker before landing. At sign up each rider was given a dime with the instructions to be sure to keep it on them. They found out it was needed to get through “President Crow-
bait” Toll Booth, complete with a working arm and Exact Change Only requirement. Rain created even slipperier conditions just before noon. Especially on the red course, which already featured a flooded soybean field just before the lunch stop at the Wisconsin River Sportsman Club (local rod and gun club). The afternoon segment had more high ground for riding but still provided a challenge. The Bucky provides a sit-down meal for the riders at the Cross Plains American Legion Hall. Host Speedy Pete Laubmeier entertained the riders with an explanation of the proceeds that the club donates to various local charities. This year the club is donating to a Veterans Memorial being built in the nearby village of Mount Horeb. Several veterans involved with that project were on hand to explain their plans, which were wellreceived by the crowd. Madison Motor-

cycle Club also donates to the Badger Honor Flight. Pete also had a chat with local enduro legend Duane Eller. Anyone who rode
enduros in the late 1970s through 2015 probably has a “Duane story”. A special appearance by trials rider and Nitro Circus performer, Phil Smage in-
cluded some memories from Pete when he was getting going in Trials and got to be good friends with Phil and Pat Smage. Chatting with Phil, he gave an uplifting story of his recovery from a severe UTV stunt crash that most doctors thought would leave him dead or paralyzed from the neck down. Phil is walking and talking and gave a lot of credit to the support of the “motorcycle riding family” in addition to his own family, wife and the Road to Recovery group. The club donated some of the proceeds directly to Phil to help with unbelievable amounts of medical expenses. The Madison Motorcycle Club is grateful to the landowners who provide the places to ride, the support of the riders, and the thanks from the many groups and individuals we have helped over the years. It makes all the work that goes into The Bucky worthwhile.

ven though it was a cool overcast day, with a high of only 42 degrees, 290 entries filled the last race of the 2018 season, which was also the third featured event for District 23. The Cambridge track celebrated their 50th year in 2018. The Norsemen ran the track for approximately the first thirty years. Then Jeff and Dawn Oldenburg took over the operation. Come 2019 we will once again see the track ran by new promotor BCMX, Frank and Kerry Barna, with their children Frank and Ashley along with Ashley’s husband Andrew. A true family affair. As we all know motocross is all about family, we are all one big family even though our bloodlines might not line up. This was very evident all day. Starting during the VET/ Women practice where there was a six plus rider pile up where I witnessed moto family (friends) helping each other. The help was anywhere from fixing bikes, borrowing

tween Mike Jenson and Jeff Miller with Troy Lowry not far behind. Early in moto one Lowry led Jenson and Miller. Miller was fighting an injury he suffered in the morning practice. In lap three Jenson got around Lowry and they finished in that order out front. After the race I talked to Miller and he was in pain and had to forgo racing the second moto. In Moto two Lowry started ahead of Jenson but by the time lap two came around Jenson had passed Lowry, where he would remain for the rest of the race to take the win as well as clinching the state title. The Women’s class was all tied up and came down to the last moto between Trisha Hoover and Miranda Tweeton. In the first moto the leader was Lexi CYCLE USA, December 2018
