be there if any of these rules are important to you. If you proposed a new rule you must be present to explain it or have someone to represent the proposal at the meeting. Election of officers and class representatives occurs at this meeting. If you are interested in serving on the board you can send your name to me or be nominated from the floor. We plan to have a complete schedule finalized and ready to go by the annual meeting. All of the awards for the 2019 season have been approved and the vendors will begin working on them by the time you read this. All of the season’s events are now complete, points totaled, and finalized. The awards ceremonies are planned or being planned, watch our website for all the details. The Motocross awards ceremony is scheduled for January 11th starting at 9:30 A.M. at Treasure Island Resort and Casino just north of Red Wing MN. All of the other venues will be posted on the website once we have the information available. We encourage all you to attend and show support for your fellow competitors. These banquets are a great time to get to know your fellow racers, have some fun bench racing with them and celebrate the season. One final thank you goes to Chuck Melcher for the past 28 years of serving the interests of our district and those surrounding us. It will not be same without Cycle USA. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman This is a hard column to write as it is the last one I will have the opportunity to pen for Cycle USA. As stated by Chuck Melcher, the magazine as we know it is coming to an end. I would be severely remiss not to mention how important Cycle USA has been to our members for the last two and half decades. It is hard to believe that much time has passed. Chuck Melcher has worked extremely hard to bring us the all the news of the sport we love so much. I can’t put into words the contributions he has made to our members and the members of surrounding districts. The amount of time he has spent over the decades is immeasurable. I can’t find the words to thank Chuck for his contributions to everything we do on two wheels. I also want to wish him only the best as he moves forward. Now maybe he will have time to road ride and get his fishing boat into the water. As we move forward without this monthly publication we are making plans to keep you updated via our website and email news blasts. We will have more on this as we move forward. Speaking of moving forward, our annual meeting and elections are coming up. The meeting is Sunday December 15th at the Bloomington Event Center starting at 1:00 P.M. say “our” final issue because Cycle USA has been something special for all of us. It has been made possible through all of our contributions for these twenty-eight years. In last month’s announcement I thanked everyone for giving me the opportunity to act as the publisher of this magazine. This always has been a collective effort; the districts, advertisers, clubs/ promoters, contributors and all of you, fellow riders and family members. Everyone played a part in making Cycle USA possible, and no where else in the country has a group been able to do this like we did. It’s sad that it is coming to an end, but please don’t let that diminish the value of what we together have accomplished. In a tribute to all this I’ve spent many months working on the Cycle USA website where archives of the past issues will be saved. It will take a while to get the oldest issues posted as they need to be scanned page by page... and the

quality won’t be the same as the more recent years. I do hope to get every issue posted eventually, then maintain the archives as long as possible into the future for everyone to see and share. Since the announcement, I’ve had many very meaningful conversations, emails and text messages from many special people... and I thank everyone for the kind words about Cycle USA and its meaning to everyone. This really is a special and big family, and I’m very proud to be part of it with all of you. It seems everything we do in racing is supported by family... be it our own or new family created at events. This is perhaps the greatest reward from being involved in this sport - friends & family. I would like to thank my loving wife Montiel who has supported me through all these years... through the final twenty years of my racing, then giving me all the time needed to chase this dream. he midwest motocross season ends just as it began in 2019.... with a mudder! It ended with the annual Motosports Park Halloween Race weekend upon us and the weather forecast once again not in our favor. With being only four weeks into the official start of the fall season it was apparent that the rains would continue to haunt the Halloween race weekend. Still, that didn’t stop the many families from arriving on Saturday morning and setting up camp for the weekend festivities - to enjoy a full day of riding on Saturday with fun activities to continue into the evening and racing on Sunday. This weekend’s Halloween Race was combined with the makeup date for the Racer-X Series that had also been cancelled previously due to rain. With Saturday’s good weather the open practice day went well, even Aaron got out and spun a few laps this day! Unfortunately, the rain showed up just as the pumpkin carving started and didn’t let up all night. Saturday evening’s social media post for Motosports Park once again read, “Raining here now. As I arrived that morning and we were standing there watching practice, we began talking about this season and Aaron had this to say, “It would have been easy (and better for the business) to cancel, but we couldn’t end our 50th season on a cancellation. And after all, these families and racers here now, came here today to race.” And the Vincers were not going to let them down. That bike was like a tank going through the deep muddy ruts and Moehrke never let up as he competed with some of the newest bikes on the market, he finished with an impressive fifth overall for the day. class was #137 Tim Boblin and #24 William (Bill) Ziesk in both motos. Ziesk won the first moto but Boblin wasn’t going to make it easy in moto two as they battled back and forth. In the end it was Boblin taking the win and the overall for the day with Ziesk second. Over the history of time at Motosports Park, Bill Ziesk and his family have contributed their time to help keep the track and facilities going throughout the years. Normally on race day Bill would be helping Don & Sue with the Lap Times system or helping at the start gate to keep the motos moving along, it was great to see him actually racing on this day and enjoying the reaps of his work. The day was filled with riders of all ages and the majority of them driving down from Wisconsin. They were ready to rock and not let a little bit of mud stand in their way. In the 50cc classes first motos we saw sheer determination to accomplish each lap with all their might. Pushing through the deep ruts that probably felt like riding through a canyon, to being able to get to the top of the uphills and jumps, these little rippers never gave up. Everyone was on the sidelines cheering them on. That’s moto, and the moto family always giving encouragement! The second motos the track had improved and the lap times were faster. By the end of the day they all proved they were winners! Levi Gower (WI) won both the 50cc and 50 (7-8) classes. Adam Graham (WI) went 1-1 for the win in the 50 (4-6) with Jase Morgan (WI) riding his KTM to sec10

ond ahead of Weston Otto (WI) taking the third step on the podium in 50JR and second in the 50cc class. It’s always great to meet new people at the track and hear why or how they got into racing; this day was no exception. It was after the second moto of the Open C class a rider approached me and introduced himself. He had wanted to know if I had taken any pictures of him, I told him that I had. He was so excited but not because I had pictures. He went on to tell me about how he had raced over 15 years ago and just this year decided to race again with the support of his best friend. He had missed the sport and was really glad he had come back to riding and was having fun. He was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt with a logo on it, and explained to me that the logo represented his best friend that had tragically passed away a few weeks prior to this race. He told me he was racing this day in honor of his friend, the friend that encouraged him to race again and have fun in life. And Honor he did because he won the overall for the day, and dedicated it to his friend. Thank you, Matthew Duncker, for putting a story to the pictures of life. The outdoor season has wrapped up for 2019 and this is the final issue for the magazine that we’ve all come to love & anticipate in our mail boxes every month. I believe, it’s our time to thank our moto friends and families for making this a great season despite all the rainy weekends that we had. Aaron Vincer added, “Thank you

to all the people that have supported Motosports Park for the past 50 years. It’s amazing to see three generations of riders at the park.” As the Vincers go on to work out the schedule for the 2020 season, Aaron stated; “We are optimistic about having another Nuclear-Sunset Series on the calendar, and maybe host a Loretta’s event. We will continue to focus on keeping the park a place where families can enjoy motocross.” And for now, we bid adieu to Cycle USA as we know it, and a huge shout out to Chuck Melcher for all of his hard work and dedication these years. It’s been such a pleasure working with you, thank you for giving me the confidence and life's experience in being able to share our pictures and stories of all the great moto families we’ve met along the way. Althoff triples at Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - October 13 By Rolfe Otterness

ackson Althoff roosted his way to three wins on the Spring Creek Mini track to top off the 2019 race season at Spring Creek Park. Althoff rode to moto wins in Hornets 7-11, 50cc Premix 4-6 and 50cc Open 4-8 on this cold, blustery day showing that the cool temps were not affecting his skills. About 260 entries showed they would not be deterred by the nearly-winter temps. They charged around the challenging terrain in slippery conditions for the early motos, but conditions improved throughout the day and the snows of Saturday practice became just a hazy memory. On the big track, in the +60 class Wayne Welzien ripped up the start straight to take control in turn one as they initiated battle in moto one. Welzien has been strong all year and settled into the lead as Jack Parenteau kept close for the first couple of laps. Lynn Meyer and Jerry Schulze were duking it out over third for most of the race and Schulze got the upper hand on the last lap to follow

leading the way for the rest of the field as they hit turn one. Parenteau latched onto second again while Meyer and Schulze battled over third. Welzien built a lead over Parenteau as the laps rolled by and Schulze displaced Meyer in third about halfway through the race. The checkered flag brought the race to a close with Welzien holding a safe lead for the win. Parenteau was clear of the battle behind him as Schulze brought his bike across for third despite Meyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pressure. Harold Gooch was next across the line to tie up fifth overall with a 6-5 score. Milo Maas charged out to the early lead in the first 85cc 9-12 moto. He was on the gas and started to build a nice lead while an intense battle developed over second place with Braxton Williamson, Caleb Wagner and Landon Quandahl as participants. Maas took the win with a big gap over his competitors. Williamson snagged second over Quandahl and Wagner despite all their efforts. Chad Schmitt pulled across the line for fifth. Maas surged out ahead in moto two for a repeat win. Williamson and Wagner ran in second and third for the entirety of the race and were John Dubiel (910), Steve Sutton (103) and Dan spaced apart a bit back from Maas at Mahowald attack the Spring Creek terrain.

the flag. Carson Lanning came out on top of the battle he had with Quandahl for most of the moto as his fourth-place finish topped the eighth place he had in moto one. But Quandahlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more consistent 3-5 score was good for 4th overall. Gavin Tilford motored out to lead the Schoolboy 1 class as the gate was dropped by Tom Kidd for moto one. Tilford looked strong out front as he set a rapid pace. Carson Johanningmeier held second at the conclusion of lap one, but had Wyatt McGrath on his tail. McGrath was soon by to take over second place with Brodie Boumeester latching onto third. McGrath seemed to be catching up a bit on Tilford but had a bobble on the last lap, losing enough time so that Boumeester caught up to him just as he was recovering from his dirt sampling. Tilford took the win comfortably while McGrath managed to hold off Boumeesterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charge. Johanningmeier grabbed fourth over Evan Hawkins. The battle was on in moto two with Tilford leading the way and McGrath pressuring him for the duration. It all came down to the last turn and McGrath got a good run down the last hill and went to the outside in a high-intensity move to take the win by half a bike length over Tilford. Hawkins improved for third this second time out with Boumeester and Johanningmeier rounding out the top five. Good moto! On a side note: Thanks to Chuck Melcher (of Cycle USA) for putting out a quality publication and getting some recognition for all the moto athletes over the years. It has been 43 years since I took this up as a past time and I must have seen many thousands of motos over that span. Amazing sport... we are lucky to partake of it. Shadow Valley Drifters Double Header Finale New Richmond, Wisconsin - October 19/20 By Tim McBribe

he Shadow Valley Drifters played host to the final District 23/16 flat track double header event of the 2019 season as they held the end of year Brad Baker weekend special that featured a silent auction with proceeds going to the former Grand National Champion, Baker. On Friday, a rider school/ practice day was held featuring instructors Baker, Kevin Anderson and Brian Bartlow. Several vendors were also on hand including the Rookies Class of ’79, Spectro Oils, Dunlop Tires and Gary Kinzler from Lightshoe. Later on Saturday night the band “Creeping Charlie” performed, adding to another successful weekend. A full field of competitors from both districts was on hand to provide an exciting two days of racing where battles were waged and championships were decided. In the Grand National Championship

#31 Jillian Deschenes scored the win in the Women’s class on Saturday. On Sunday it was #08 Zaria Martins taking the win. Both riders were rebounding from serious injuries suffered earlier in the season.

Hooligan class Jeremy Deruyter won on both days to clinch his title. The Women’s class featured a full field both days. D23’s Jillian Deschenes won the class on Saturday and Wisconsin’s Zaria Martens topped the field on Sunday. Both were coming off of serious early season injuries. The +50 class featured an exciting eighteen rider field for Saturday’s main event. #34 Jeremy Deruyter scored wins both days in the Grand National Hooligan class.

Dave Darsow used a daring outside line to pass early leader Terry Vestal and Randy Thislte to score the win. The Maddog and Maddog Max classes are always stacked with competitors. Adam Popp almost tallied a perfect 4 for 4 score, but settled for a hat trick as Dan Bailey took the win in Maddog Max on Sunday. Promoters Colin Hasting and Bobbi Jo Denver from the Shadow Valley Drifters put together another very successful and charitable weekend to cap off the 2019 season. D16 Annual Banquet Weekend Wisconsin Dells, WI - November 8-10 By Doug and Kaila Forstner

he Kalahari Resort and Waterpark in Wisconsin Dells was once again the site of the annual District 16 awards banquet. It is a great facility that is able to handle the growing event and all the racers. Families start actually showing up on Thursday in anticipation of the great weekend. Spread out over the course of the weekend, there’s no shortage of activities and meetings culminating into the Saturday night awards dinner and banquet. Meetings for motocross, hillclimb, short track, Trials and Harescrambles/ Enduro happened with brainstorming sessions open to not only hosting clubs but also riders. The Youth Off Road Group which has grown substantially since its inception was also on hand and even had a Rider Celebration banquet Friday night for all the participants. This without a doubt has been the best idea District 16 has had in many years. As we all know, getting the youth involved in our awesome sport of riding motorcycles at an early age is key. Sugar Maple MX received the Gold Level Sponsor Plaque from the group for their awesome support to the group. Mix in the waterpark, mini golf, go carts, bowling alley festivities, and theme park fun, time seems to fly by especially when

it’s on everyone’s mind all year. One of the main goals in racing is doing well and racing all summer to accumulate points to be crowned a champion should be on everyone’s mind. Congratulations to the 2020 Board of Directors for pulling off another successful season: President: Todd Ellingson, Vice President: Joe Stoppleworth, Treasurer: Ken Schuck, Secretary: Miranda Amerling, Legislative: Mike Schwarzenbacher. For 2020 we will have a new Motocross Referee as Brian McCanna will take over the reigns as only the fourth MX referee for as long as I can remember. Thanks to Scott Biese for stepping up and heading that for the past couple years. He reflected on the weekend saying the following, “It wasn’t until Sunday morning drive home that I reflected upon my short time spent as district referee that I realized how lucky I was to have that opportunity. I’m extremely proud, not because of what I accomplished, but how I grew as a person within that

role. The challenge of always dealing with an opposing viewpoint and managing what I felt had always been a bit of a conflict of interest made things interesting for sure. Realizing that just because I didn’t always agree with others and understanding and accepting that opposing viewpoints can and often are better ideas than my own. I have a new view and appreciation for how the

process and procedures that the group must work within. We have an incredible group of people leading our district right now. I can promise they are always looking out for the best interest of our district. Thank you District 16 for changing my life.â&#x20AC;? Also congrats to Jeri Nyberg for being voted photographer of the year in the district. Also Xmas Motorsports won the favorite track once again and Sportland2 took home favorite Dealership for 2019. Rapids Closes 2019 D16 Season Dyracuse, Wisconsin - September 22 By the Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club

ain has been a conversation way more often this season than we would ever care for. As the Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club’s annual fall offroad weekend arrived to close up the 2019 District 16 season in late September, the ugly topic arrived again. BUT, this is a race at Dyracuse... and the sand takes rain well. Saturday kicked off the weekend with a GranPrix, Sunday saw a full Harescrambles, and the racing was fantastic. Dyracuse, Wisconsin... more commonly known as Rapids saw two good days of weather after plenty of rain during the week. Even more rain on Saturday night couldn’t dampen the success. On Sunday, the Harescrambles racing kicked off with Autumn Czappa topping the Women’s class ahead of Carissa Conine and Autumn Bostrom. Mason Kubis won the 85cc class ahead of Rex Valek by just over ninety seconds. Bode Wallner put in a great ride in the 65cc class, being the only rider in his class to match the five full laps of the older kids and Czappa out front.

The two were fender to fender most of the race. Parker Obermeier put his KTM to the win in 50cc Beginner. The morning big bike classes saw more great racing as Carson Hosking took the overall, riding in the C class. Hosking after the race, “In the beginning I was behind a guy on a YZ125 and managed to get around him in the flat sand area out back. After that, I just kept pushing to open as much of a gap as possible. Most of the course was pretty tacky but there were areas with really deep ruts that you needed to hit right.” Colten Gaylord finished back twentyeight seconds after fighting his way into second. “It wasn’t the best start for me as I came out in like fifth or sixth. A few guys made mistakes up in the pines on the first lap and I got around them early so that helped. I kept going until I caught second place and by then the leader was gone. The course flowed really well. This is probably as wet as I’ve ever seen it though. Still it was good once you got a pace going.” Noah Laedtke made it a great race from start to finish on his YZ125, ending up in an impressive third. “I just tried to get the best start possible and maintain my ground. I went out to ride my own race and not worry about anyone around me. I ran in second for a while and then took over the CYCLE USA, December 2019

lead before dropping back to third. I had a good race and the early pace on the unridden track was hard, but a lot of fun.” Riding in the same race, out of the +50 class, Bryan Nebel and David Donahue finished four laps with the C class leaders. Nebel finished just ahead of Donahue for the win. Nebel after, “I was a little hesitant this morning after my son broke his collar bone yesterday... just didn’t sleep well. Once my nerves burnt off it worked out really well. The first two laps were great as I had a battle back and forth before he (Donahue) fell off the pace a little. From there I held my lines and it all worked out. I thought the sand would tack up more than it did... but it was a challenge and I had a good time.” The afternoon big bike race set up on a very good track as conditions continued to improve. The deep sand in the motocross track was an obstacle... but manageable by everyone, for the most part. Topping everyone was AA rider JD Friebel, winning by almost five minutes. Mat Herrington put in an impressive and quiet ride in second place. Once Herrington was in position, he rode at just the right pace, never really challenged from behind.

the woods was really good and there were only a couple rough sections. The MX track was really water logged but the rest was excellent. I kept the same pace all the way through just in case something happened. You really don’t want to let up and just ride as that seems to be when you make those little mistakes.” The race for third was a good one where Pete Laubmeier, Eric Mischler and Chuck Garetson kept it interesting to the end. Jay’s Power Sports/ Moose backed Laubmeier, “I had a horrible start but a fun race. I made plenty of mistakes but so did everyone around me. Eric and I were fender to fender for the last hour and a half. He caught me near the end and I knew I was close on fuel. I stopped for just enough to not blow the entire day. I pushed hard and got close at the end but he beat me.” In the end, Mischler finished third, just seconds ahead of Laubmeier. Mischler’s HD backed Mischler after the exciting finish, “I got into second early and then crashed in the deep sand of the moto track. Pete went around me and then we had Chuck Garetson in the mix as well. I settled down some and made it up. Once Pete stopped for gas I thought I was good, then

we hit the moto track and I went over the bars yet again. I got up just in time and Pete was right on me to the end. It was one of the more fun races I’ve had here for sure.” One rider managed to put in the same seven laps as the AA riders, Broc Graif of the A class. Graif, “This is by far one of the best courses I have ever ridden. I got last in the start but then was able to quickly move up and try to ride behind a few of the AA riders. The sand, the layout and all the single track... it was difficult and it was so good to race on. I ran an extra lap versus the rest of my class and I was actually really

happy to have the extra time out there.” The B class riders kept it close as well. Noah Dalsing finished second right behind winner Patrick Mullarkey. Moose Racing/ Latitude Graphics/ Finishline Engines/ Kenda backed Mullarkey, “We had a good race that came down to the end... me against the youngster but I held on. The club added a lot of new stuff and put together another really good course. After how well they did this weekend, I’m already looking forward to returning next year. I was sitting in fourth after the first woods section and battled it out with a few of the moto guys.

JennerationMX Finale Grayslake, Illinois - October 19 By Mariska Minkus

s the motocross season wraps up, so does the second year of JennerationMX Stadium racing. Even rain forecasted for later in the evening didn’t stop racers from filing into the pits of the Lake County Fairgrounds to have a fun and final night of Stadium racing. The late afternoon temps were actually enjoyable for the month of October. It may be the flannel shirt season but nobody seemed to mind as long as the rain stayed away. With the series points up for grabs, this was the night to make it come to life and clinch those titles for 2019. The track was prepped and ready. Conditions were a little muddy and slick during practice, but after a while it shaped up pretty well for the evening races. The track is technical due to the size of the area, making riders focus. With its high banked corners along with the sand section and rollers the riders have fun, especially the PeeWee riders. They had their Cobras

and KTMs on the gate ready to race and conquer each lap. The 50cc Open group is always a blast to watch and the only class

of the night that the top four riders were really mixing it up for the coveted winning position from the heats to the final. It was Holden Lamkin on his (BC Racing/ Smart Lighting/ Atlantic Construction) Cobra winning the overall, and the #309 Emmett Baker in second followed by Ryder Salas and Cole Johler. Several classes were combined with split gate drops. The first group had +25B/C, 14-24B/C and School Boy 1 racing together. Tyler Miller rode his #244 Honda for the win in +25 and in 14-24 it was Oscer Rodriguez taking the win ahead of #144 Yamaha of Casey Palka. In Schoolboy 1 the KTMs dominated the track with #99 Anthony Edgerton returning this night after a hiatus from racing since the regionals. Edgerton never skipped a beat and won both motos, followed by Marshall Sellek and Zane Siminak. The Euphoriamx student, Siminak went on to win both motos in the 85Sr class. Afterwards the TZR/ EVS/ Decalworks sponsored rider said, “both motos went great! Getting the holeshot and being able to maintain the lead.” But there was an Oh Oh!, moment when Siminak’s front wheel washed out and he went down, but thanks to the gap he built up between him and second place rider Tyler Holder.

Since the beginning of the season we’ve seen several new faces on the gate mostly in the 250C and Open C classes. That’s very promising to the sport. At this race we had the #77 of Trevor Lloyd racing his Honda in both classes. Lloyd after, “The motos were great! I had a lot of fun especially battling the whole moto with Brandon Jackson. This is my first season racing and the track is very technical and flows well!” Speaking of first season racers, #15 Skyler Williams came out to race again. Williams along with Jack Sparks and Oscer Rodriguez were running head to head all

night. In 250C it was Sparks taking home the win, after he placed third in the heat. Williams had a consistent 2-2 night. And Rodriguez who won the heat race, finished third overall. Sparks and Williams have had quite a few battles this year and they sure will be fun to watch next season. As the racing finished up and riders were leaving with stories and trophies for the end of the season, I spoke with Kurt Jennison, owner of the JennerationMX. He reflected as he reflected on the season. “We need to support local racing or these tracks will go away. We put a great race together for the racers and we are very grateful for their

continued support. Overall looking back at the 2019 season, it was tough for most local race tracks with all of the rain we got. We had to cancel three of our races and the St. Jude Benefit ride we were hosting. That aside, the races we did put on were awesome! The fair race was absolutely amazing. Some really great riders showed up for that. We ended up having a ton of positive feedback, and we were able to draw more spectators. We ended up making some great track changes and that helped keep it fun. Huge thanks to Tyler Vacala, Sharknation and everyone who chipped in to help with the track. We couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of our awesome staff. This crew has things down and it’s really cool to see the team in action. A huge thanks to all our sponsors as well. We’re looking into next year already and we can’t wait to bring more things to the table! lthough Mother Nature planned to soak the final weekend of the Echo Valley series, the track crew and riders persisted to experience great racing conditions. The Saturday practice session was cancelled due to rain the day before the last race of the season, but Amber and Spencer put on an end-ofseason banquet that evening with a record crowd in attendance. Racers showed up Sunday to take in a brisk day of racing with the wind whipping. The track started out a little slick but quickly developed to a great setup with the sun and wind. Halfway through the second set of motos sprinkles returned to make it interesting and give the racers motivation to wrap it up for the year. In the first Open A moto, #625 Austin Kienast led Clay Olson and Gavin Kadlec out of the gate and took an immediate lead while never looking back. In the second moto Kienast again took the holeshot while Olson and Kadlec mixed it up a little right behind. Kienast dialed in the track and for an easy 1-1 overall. In a similar fashion, #217 Bentlee Walker took the holeshot in the 65 711 moto 1 and led all laps with Tucker King and Devon Watson getting tight as the race came to a close. Moto two saw Bentlee again take off from the start to lead the pack while Watson got a better start to chase him and King wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t far behind. Bentlee went 1-1 for the overall with Watson improving to take second with a 3-2 and King following up in third with a 2-5 finish. Brantley Spafford took first place in the 50cc Micro 4-6 1st moto with Blake Essig in tow and Brady Johnson and Bodey Blomdahl following up. When the gate dropped for moto two Essig and Spafford swapped positions to give Essig the overall. Another great season at Echo Valley by Amber and Spencer with some great track improvements and changes to keep racers interested in coming back for more! Culver, MNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Brady Johnson raced to third in 50cc 4-6.

ights, Camera, Action! After a full season of motocross racing, hitting up an event that is a little off the norm is a fun thing to do. Throwdown at Sundown is the perfect example. The concept being, throw a little fun into an event besides the mx racing. The Fantasy Moto crew has been hosting this event for a few years now and turnouts keep getting bigger. Friday is pit bike and big bike practice along with campfires and fun. Saturday is a casual day that leads into a frog catching contest, Marty Leum toy dirt track building

contest, pit bike racing under the lights and topped off with the best whip contest under the United Rental lights with the bonfire light on the domain jump. With all the craziness going on Saturday, if all that above wasn’t enough, rumor had it something never attempted was going to happen as well. Social media the week prior had most people believing that someone was going to try and jump the pond with a motorcycle. I know Evel Knievel isn’t around anymore and Travis Pastrana had prior commitments. But, when a flip ramp showed up and no other than Phil Smage was lingering in the pits, the rumors were flying. Low and behold, Jordan “Fro” Biese comes rolling out with a fresh 1994 Kx80 and tells everyone he is going to do his first ever backflip into the pond. Soon, you could hardly find a good spot to watch

the attempt. In true Knievel form, Jordan took a couple practice runs up to the ramp to fire up the crowd. After a last minute pep talk from Smage, Biese hit that ramp and made a perfect backflip smack dab into the middle of the pond and the crowd went crazy. The rescue of Jordan and the bike was successful and no frogs were harmed during the backflip. Afterwards, I asked Jordan what he thought about his first backflip, and he said, Phil coached him perfectly and had all the confidence in the world. I for one can’t wait to see what might be in store for next year’s event. As for Saturday results, almost 100 pitbikes were running in many divisions on the Battle of Wisconsin supercross track complete with car tunnel, boulder chicane, joker lane, log crossing and some mud. No one really scores the event because everyone who enters has a blast which makes them all winners. Whip contest wrapped up the night and some epic whips were thrown down. Josh Philbrick was the reigning champ and he was up to the challenge to defend the honor. Some of the younger riders that have been

watching the contest through the years, are now old enough to give some of the older riders a run at the title. I find this event very difficult to judge a winner because everyone who enters is out there putting on a show for the fans so I feel everyone is a winner. However, when the dust settled it was Brian Ludwig with the win. Sunday was a District 16 motocross points race. The Fantasy Moto crew again came up with thousands of dollars of swag for the racers as a thank you for being loyal to their events. at the riders meeting it was looking like the racing would be cancelled. Most racers have the no quit attitude and a vote decided that the show must go on. As the first couple of motos took off, it was apparent that the track was not going to hold up all day, so it was decided that only one set of motos were going to happen. Peeweeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had first crack at the track so they would have the best conditions. Adam Graham made the trip from Muskego WI to take the victory in 50Jr class ahead of Vinnie Lohman. Weston Otto was third followed by Jaxson Helland and Lexi Gower. Zack Augustine was able to win 50Sr class over Avery Henry who took second place. Levi Gower rounded out the

podium just ahead of Jenna Klismet and Skyler Fritz. Deegan Vanvreede was able to take the win in 85cc 9-11, beating Brody Barth and Riley Busse. Jace Miller made the trip down from the U.P. to take fourth ahead of Jayden Wolf. 85cc 12-15 saw Ethan Ebben take control of the class early and get the win ahead of Brad Ottenad. Ethan Ramsey was third followed by Jordan Godeck and Tyler Holder. Mini Open 9-13 combines some of these riders together and for this race it was Busse who got out front early and took the win over Barth, Wolf, Miller and Ryder Skodras. Open C had a pretty full gate and all the top riders in the class were on the line to try and bolster their points position. However, the top runners in the class had nothing for Easton Block who showed up on his YZ125 and took the win. Luke Vanlyssel and Kevin Gollubske rounded out the muddy podium. Dustin Erickson was fourth followed by Tylor Seidlitz. Kollin Kadinger had some issues and wound up sixth in the moto but will still end up winning the Open C class this year in the district. Block must have been loving the muddy conditions because he was able to also win in the 250C class. Erickson took second followed by Kadinger who had a better moto this time around. +25B/C class has had a good following this year and even in the muddy conditions had a solid turnout once again. Nick Czechowicz took the win ahead of Cody Jones, Hayden Henry, Robert Jones and Tom Gedemer. +25A allowed Philbrick a chance to get a win for the weekend after missing out on a three peat in the whip contest the night before. He was ahead of Jesse Frassetto, Joey Dretzka, Mike Kingstad and Chad Berg in the race.

One class that has had great battles all summer long is 2 Stroke B/C. Kyle Kohls took fifth in the moto behind Trevor Trachte who was fourth. Gedemer ran alone in third and out front during the moto was Jake Hunger followed by Nick Jacobson. Hunger was steady the entire race with Jacobson right on his rear fender and on the final obstacle the new hump that was put in to slow racers down before the finish line, Jacobson got his rear wheel to the ground first and narrowly beat Hunger across the line. The points battle will ultimately come down the final race at Aztalan. As the motos wrapped up, the tractors and skidsteer were busy helping everyone get out of the pit area - but even with the muddy conditions this event does not disappoint.

ain has been the story of 2019. Many races have been postponed or cancelled due to heavy rain so far this year. The long-running Silver Dollar Shootout Enduro/ Dual Sport in Geneseo, IL was originally scheduled for the weekend of September 21-22, however four plus inches of rain in the days leading up to the two-day event forced the WFO Promotions crew to push the event back a week in hopes of better weather. With only a little bit of rain during the week, the terrain dried out just enough to make the race slippery, but not impassable. Unfortunately rain in the forecast for the already rescheduled raceday scared off what would have been the great turnout that this event typically sees. The majority of the riders opted for an early minute, some-

Bonneur and McDonald each won two tests and tied down to the second on test #3. Third overall on the day was Austin Wells aboard his D&W Cycle Specialties/ SRT Husqvarna. Colt Converse held a podium position all day until a mistake in a creek section on test #4 cost him about three minutes. Fifth overall went to multitime Silver Dollar Shootout winner Ryan Lenth. Jeremy Smith took the +30A class win along with seventh overall. Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kirk Foster took second with Jaramie Brown in third. Skyler Harkless took the win in the 98-Open A class over Jhadyn Walker and Tyler Heitzler. In the Senior +40A class, Joel Mertes edged out Rob McGee by only seconds for the win. incoln Trail Motosports had perfect weather for an action-packed weekend as they hosted Rounds 9 and 10 of the Fly Showdown series along with a District 17 Bonus points race. It was also a round of the Mid-America and the Kentuckiana MX Series. There was pit bike racing, free food, trick or treat… it was an

incredible weekend. Saturday they raced on the Bomber track and Sunday on the Classic track, which has been having races since 1973. Over the decades the last race at LTM has been called the Fall Nationals (that included the four stroke Nationals), The Fall Classic (famous for fast racers showing up), Rider Appreciation Weekend, and now it’s called the Last Blast - which is perfect because it is a BLAST with two

tracks and all the things to do. You can see why they had 1,000 entries signed up for track time over the weekend. What else would you expect from the AMA Motocross promoter of the year? Thank you to the LTM staff for all the hard work they do all year to provide incredible tracks for the riders. While the Rider Appreciation is loads of fun with great racing, it marks the end of another great season at LTM. It also marks the last time the event will appear in Cycle USA. Even though it was the end of season and the end of District points battles, it also had some new beginnings: Yamaha rider Waylon Krispin rode for the first time on a motocross track, racing both days in the 50cc Shaft shifter class. When I asked him about his racing and the weekend he said “It was the best weekend ever! I’m a real Motocross racer.” As with every rider there were crashes and good parts of his day, but most of all there were huge smiles. He said “I love riding my motorcycle!” It’s great to see new racers and riders in the sport we all love. Even with riders like Waylon having fun on his first race weekend and everyone at the track having fun with the events, others were in full race mode trying to lock down points for the Championships and that always means incredible racing!

A few riders that were in points battles were Yamaha rider JC Hoyt, Yamaha rider Josh Franklin, Kawasaki rider Eric Navel and Husky rider Dylan Daugherty. After being hurt and off the bike for a time, this weekend saw Daugherty back at his first event and in search of 250C points. A firstturn crash left him banged up on Saturday and he finished 11th overall. Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth place overall was what he needed to hold on to the District points lead. Yamaha rider Josh Franklin entered the weekend leading the D17 points in Open B, so his focus was on the Fly Showdown Series points race in Open B and 125 Two Stroke. In Open, the battle all year was between Franklin and Eric Navel. In the end, when the smoke cleared, it was Franklin who came out with the championship.

In the 14-24 class Eric Navel was back for battle and JC Hoyt was waiting for him. All year these riders rode as hard as they could and at the end only nine points was the difference. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crazy after a year of racing, and this season Eric Navel took the win with Hoyt second. Hoyt and his Yamaha were up front in the 125 Two Stroke class all season. But showing up again was Josh Franklin who also was on the gas. This weekend brought the final chance for points and it was ON. While neither rider won the class, Franklin had better luck as Hoyt hit something with his shifter and bent his shift shaft. 12th overall was the best he could do on Sunday and the end result was Franklin taking the season points battle over Hoyt by only three points.

he 2019 Motocross Featured Events started Sunday, August 18 at Moto City Raceway, followed by September 8th hosted by Berm Benders Raceway in Mora and a final race at Spring Creek MX. The races count as one race in D23 standings but the racer is awarded points on the finish in each moto, doubling the points value for the day. This makes these races extremely important for racers seeking a class title, and pits competitors from all over the state against each other in some of the best racing of the year. With great excitement, racers and their families gathered in record numbers at Berm Benders Raceway. Season points and potential for advancement against other racers in their class fueled an excitement that electrified the track. Every campsite was brimming to capacity, filled with racers of all ages laughing and boasting with each other as they primed themselves for practice and race day. Great care had been taken to prepare the facility for a packed house. A brand-new rhythm section quickly became a fan favorite. On Saturday, families could watch racers

work out the timing on the new section in practice, grab a snack from the vendor or participate in activities. The festive environment was enhanced by an all-day bouncy house, bingo, a community bonfire and DJ in the evening for all to enjoy with a special wine tasting to cap off the night. The weekend highlight was of course the racing and many racers behaved accordingly Saturday both in practice and in the evening knowing more than usual was at stake on the line the next day. In addition to D23 bonus points, holeshot awards, pro pay-out, contingency from Kawasaki and Suzuki, above all season bragging rights. A cooler than usual overcast day was bestowed on the track Sunday. The riders meeting that morning was accentuated by a stirring live rendition of the National Anthem on electric guitar. Special to this event, each racer was given a mechanics pass for their chosen team mate to accompany them to the line. Only they were admitted there and into a private trackside cheering section. There were many great match ups that day with close points battles decided but the fences were most packed with spectators when Open A took the line for their moto. The best of the best lined up beside each other for the first moto. It was

Jerry Robin who made it to the Nitro Lube holeshot marker first taking the bonus cash. Zac Williams was on his tail with Scott Jendro next to him, before Josh Boaz pushed his way by both of them as he targeted Robin. Coming into the last section of the first lap Boaz triples into the whoops like a beast, closing in. The new track configuration allowed the fans a full view of the action and all eyes were glued on Boaz as he reeled in Robin throughout the second lap. Boaz out jumped him for the lead for an entire lap only to forfeit it in the same section on the following lap. A high speed wash out by Robin however gave Boaz a chance to take the lead back. Moto 1; Boaz first, Robin second, Williams third. In moto two Robin was determined to win and punctuated that with a holeshot and small lead early on. Gavin Wilkins had a great start challenged by fan favorite Nick Jackson, but lurking behind was ever hungry Boaz who quickly took third. Spurned on by Boaz, Wilkins picked up his pace but surrendered control to the dirt letting Boaz and Williams by him before recovering. Robin had a healthy lead on Boaz who was himself comfortably in front of Williams. With equally blazing speeds the three of them maintained positions for the rest of the race.

Throughout the race day the track weathered the many riders well. Each of the race’s top three finishers were invited to the podium for an interview and special award ceremony emphasizing the importance of the weekend’s race. As awards were collected and race highlights retold, the racers and their families packed up saying goodbye to their competitors and moto family. Azzie concludes 2019 D16 Motocross Season Lake Mills, Wisconsin - October 12/13 By Jason Friberg

elp, the time is here. We made it to the last race of the year. October is so hit or miss with races, especially this year. Rain all day - every day. Seems like it never ended this year. Once again Karter Busse and the rest of the Aztalan track crew worked endless hours to really make the last race of the year one of the best. Even if it was 31 degrees. The dirt was perfect and the changes they made were great.

Raising over $1000 for a dash for cash brought in some bigger names. One I've personally never seen at aztalan, Tom Zont Racing/ Sportland2 arenacross rider Travis Sewell made the long trek from Valparaiso Indiana. Sewell ended up taking the win in the dash but Justin Wolf really gave him a run for his money until Wolf went down on the final lap. It's pretty awesome to see Kevin Richter raise money for these dash for cash races. It makes for insane racing.

Trick or Treat theme was in force all weekend.

Bernie Klismet grabbed a fifth overall in +30B/C.

Catching up with Sewell to talk about his weekend. “Sportland2 is a big part of the club at Aztalan and also one of my biggest supporters so anytime I can come up and race they are all about it. I’m also good friends with Cody Richter and Scott Zont who had been telling me about the event for a couple weeks. I’ve never raced here before. I came up for the pro-am last year and it poured all night so I ended up not racing. The cold weather was tough, you had to wear enough to be warm but not too much so you weren’t stiff as a board while trying to ride, but the overcast sky definitely kept moisture in the dirt all day which was awesome. The track layout is pretty fun, it has

a little bit of everything which makes it tricky. For sure I would like to come back. Hopefully for the pro-am next year and a couple other events to represent the Sportland2 gang and also support one of the tracks that support and care about their riders so much.â&#x20AC;? Costumes were out in full effect. I saw a couple tootoos and we had a clown board girl (Tom Wolf). Tyler Gamble dominated the Two Stroke class going 1-1 on his Yamaha 125 with Nick Jacobson going 3-2, battling with Jake Hunger (2-3). +40B/C has been absolutely stacked this year. I swear every Azzy race they have at least twenty riders. It's super cool to see so many vet riders battling. Jim Beckman took the win followed by Jason Boebel and Russell Hodges. I'm sad our season has to come to a close. I look forward to hot weekends at the tracks with all of my friends and moto family. There is so much hard work put into these places for us to spend priceless

hours with the people we love. Lastly, I do want to take a moment to thank Chuck for everything he has done for our local moto scene. I have personally been reading Cycle USA since I was a little kid and it was just a newspaper. It was literally a dream come true to become a part of this team this year. I've always looked up to Chuck and his work. He has really helped shape what we have. I know I'm not alone when I say this magazine is one of the things I look forward to every month so thank you Chuck from the bottom of my heart for giving me a chance to write for your very respected magazine. all racing can be hit or miss. Once you get past Labor Day weekend, many of begin juggling work, school, sports etc. However, for 2019 at most District 16 motocross events, promoters saw increases in rider participation over 2018. Sugar Maple MX’s September race weekend included in that - when we pulled into the pits it was tough finding a parking spot. The weekend consisted of a Friday practice, Saturday non points race and Sunday’s D16 race so there was plenty of action to be had. I personally missed any opportunity to ride or race the track for the year due to busy schedules as well, so it was a no brainer that I was going to be here for this one. After last year, when Keith purchased his new rototiller, that was a game changer. When the area gets some moisture and Keith tills the track it turns into a perfect mix. It looks like chocolate cake as it fluffs into a nice loamy brown soil. Once morning practice starts, you can see riders creating lines everywhere. Most corners typically will have at least 3 lines. Gone are the old big chunks that could take down a Mack truck. Cloudy and overcast skies on Sunday was a blessing as the track stayed mint all day. After everyone gathered for the riders’ meeting and national anthem, you could tell everyone was excited to get to racing. 14-24B/C had fourteen riders line up for moto one and it was Brandon Martyniak quickly making work of the field and getting his Kawasaki out front. Nick Randrup settled into second place followed by Austin Yager. Dylan Knoch and Dane Klinger rounded out the top five in the first moto. Moto two again saw Martyniak get quickly into the lead. This time however, in turn two, there was a pretty good bike jam up, mixing things up. Randrup and a couple others were caught in the pileup and had their work cut out for them. Klinger took advantage and was able to sneak into the number two spot. Jarrett Winder who took seventh in moto one also gained several spots and finished third in the moto. Yager was fourth and Max Mayer who took eleventh in the first moto jumped into the

fifth spot. Martyniak went 1-1 for first, Klingers 5-2 netted him second, Yager was consistent with 3-4 scores, Randrup finished fourth with his 2-6 scores and Winder took fifth going 7-3. 65cc 7-11 was another nice sized class and fisherman/ racer Grant Neubauer put his Yamaha into the early lead in moto one followed by Jayce Wolf, Isaac Opalewski, Kane Kalies and Torian Erdmann. In moto two again it was Neubauer out front enjoy-

ing his lead as he took the checkers for the overall. Wolf finished in second. Brecken Maas made the most moves and his 8-3 scores moved him up to fifth overall. Opalewski would go 3-4 for third and Kalies’ 4-5 was good for fourth. 85cc 9-11 saw the talented Riley Busse win moto one over Milo Maas, Jace Miller, Jayden Wolf and Neubauer. the win and overall. Maas stayed put in second for the moto. Wolf moved up to third in the moto and his 4-3 scores gave him the last spot on the podium. Miller went 3-4 for fourth ahead of Ryder Skodras (6-5). 85cc 9-13 had most of the riders from 85cc 9-11 class in it, but Ayden Price had plans for everyone. winning the moto. Ryder Beth and Easton Block were giving chase and the three set a blistering pace. Price was running fourth just ahead of Templen. At the checkers it was Oehlhof with the win. In moto two, Oehlhof had problems and opened the door for everyone else to grab a win. Jake Hunger moved up into fourth place in the moto just ahead of Kyle Zuleger. Price settled into the third spot behind Block and Beth who got out front. At the checkers it was Beth with the win and his 2-1 scores gave him the overall. Block would take

second overall followed by Price. Sugar Maple has also improved track conditions for the peewee riders. Now that the starting line is up on the top side near the pits, the riders get a pretty nice sized track to compete on. 50cc 4-6 saw Adam Graham win both motos. Lexi Gower and Cameron Wright swapped moto positions with Gower going 3-2 and getting second overall. Austin Klismet was fourth and Vinnie Lohman rounded out the top five. Levi Gower took command of the 50cc 7-8 class by winning both motos. Devin Bares took the runner-up spot, followed by Skylar Fritz, Alyjah Billman and Jerry Machak. All five riders ran consistent as they all finished in the same position in moto one and two. Throughout the day, so many good battles took place its hard to write about them all. As the track got rough and corners more rutted, it provided so many passing opportunities and great racing. The track layout is probably one of the most rider friendly for all ability levels and that is a good thing for the future of racing at Sugar Maple MX. he Minnaert Farm in Geneseo, IL has been a staple location in the WFO Promotions Hare Scramble series/ AMA District 17 for many years, hosting enduros and hare scrambles. With a rain cancellation at another location earlier in the year, the fall-time Geneseo event became a double-header with bikes only on Saturday. It was one of the first brisk weekends of the season and the wind was blowing harder than spectators would've liked, but the dirt had just enough moisture in it to make track conditions perfect. In the 50cc 4-6 class, Kayten Toal from Rock Island, IL laid down the law, taking the win. Jhenner Walker was the only other rider in the class to complete ten laps to finish second ahead of Cassie Fairfield. Scott Creagan, Jr. took the 65cc Beginner win over Cooper Lair and Grant Rasmussen. In the morning mini race on the big track, Cameron Walker was the only rider to complete four laps in the forty-five minute time limit, taking the race overall, along with the 85cc class win. In the afternoon event, current AA points leader Tanner Whipple ripped the holeshot and never looked back, taking his seventh win of the season in the series. Matt McDonald tried his best to keep Whipple in sight all day. The two seemed to yo-yo during the entire 105-minute event. McDonald would eventually finish fifteen seconds back. Adam Bonneur rebounded after a first lap crash to finish third, just over a minute behind Whipple. Finishing sixth overall, KTM-mounted Easton Morgan took the Open A win. Rylan Frankford finished a minute and a half back in second and Skyler Harkless finished third. A couple minor track changes overnight and the WFO crew was ready for the penultimate round of the series. Bright and early Sunday morning, Cooper Lair put the hammer down and took off with the 50cc 7-8 class win over Wyatt Johnson and Garrett Nicholson. Scott Creagan, Jr. swept the weekend in the 65cc Beginner class. Maxx Starcevich, out of New Windsor, IL, took second and Cooper Lair, pulling double duty, finished third. Austin Burns took the win on both days in 65cc 7-11. In the 85cc class, Cole Morgan brought the heat on the last lap, overtaking Cameron Walker with less than a mile to go. Ayden White finished third in the twelve rider field. Riley Walters won the Women's class over Ashley Toal and Allison Kocher. Cody Kennedy took the Open C win over Colona, IL native Trevor Keogh and Thomas Zimmerman. In a fashion very similar to Saturday, Tanner Whipple ripped the AA holeshot to lead the entire race. In fact, the top three were the same both days with approximately the same finishing time intervals. In +30A, Jeremy Smith edged out Yamaha rider Jaramie Brown and Shea Dickson. Alex Grunder took the +20B win over Heath VanDyke and AMA District 17 Enduro Director Ben Bradford. In Quad A, Carter Holder took the win over Chris Breitweiser and Matt Iburg. Jasen Taghan won Quad B by two minutes over Tony Kraklio. Matt Sodaro finished third.
