s many of you know on June 22nd we lost one of our young treasures. Ryder Schnowske, 15, of Cambridge, Illinois, known by many as the smiling kid who loved to ride, race and hang out at the track with his friends. He was competing at the Mid-East Regional, he had a crash and tragically he passed away. So very many of us knew him and his family as they

were avid racers here in District 17. We all would see him with his family at the track almost every weekend. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers out go to his family in this trying time. By the time this is printed we will have attended the celebration of life with many who remembered and knew him.

From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Our season is nearing the halfway point already. It seems like it just started, its moving way too fast. The old saying about time going faster as one gets older seems to be very true. So many events to participate in and not nearly enough time to attend them. District business is proceeding on schedule. We will be looking at year-end awards in the next couple of months. We can always use ideas and bids on providing our awards. We also will be getting bids for jackets for class winners and champions. If you know of anyone that is in this business please let a board member know so we can get a bid. This is one of our biggest projects of the year, and we need to get it done in advance so the awards can be personalized in time for awards ceremonies. Our membership numbers are on par with last year, which is good considering the season has been so rainy. Cancelations certainly have a negative affect on membership and participation. Lets hope the rest of the season is drier. We still have some big events coming up, and a couple of professional events. The first will be the Pro Motocross and we will also see our district’s second Pro Hillclimb. These events provide great spectating.

We will have a July deadline to submit proposed rules changes to for AMA rules in Motocross. If you have something you would like submitted for consideration get me your proposals immediately after reading this. I would like to bring to the attention of our members and parents - the issue of responsibility. We have had a few incidences in which some damage has been done to property. This unfortunately reflects on all of us as racers. We do not know the responsible parties but it is important for all us to be responsible at events. It is difficult and takes work on the part of clubs and promoters to get permission to use land and keep facilities open. Damage to property is one of the fastest ways to lose that use. We are asking that parents make sure they know where their young racers are at all times and the older racers think before getting crazy. Be sure that your actions will not have a negative impact on the sport or our organization. I know this sounds like common sense but as stated earlier we are working to correct of few negative acts. Lastly I would like to review motocross flag rules. As every motocross racer should know a yellow flag means no jumping, no passing, no gaining an advantage, red cross flag means there may be medical personnel or medical rescue vehicle on the track. This

means slow down, no passing, no jumping, wheels on the ground. We have been working hard to make racing safer. The rules state that in order to penalize a racer for flag violations, it must be witnessed by a track official. We can not act unless we confirm the infraction with the flagger or another track official. I know this can be really frustrating when we can not act, it is impossible to catch every infraction. But on those occasions that it is witnessed by a track official a penalty will be assessed. The referee has the discretion to increase the penalty if he/she feels it is appropriate. If a penalty is assessed it can be questioned and if you disagree an appeal can be filed with the AMA. We expect that once an infraction is confirmed parents do not argue with the officials but make sure their racer knows the importance of adhering to the flags. It is for the safety of the racer that is down, and for the racers coming up on the crash. There is no excuse for ignoring flags. This is the most common infraction that is penalized and it really should not be. That is all I have for this month. If you have any issues or questions as always we are open to hearing from you. esse Janisch claimed his fourth AFT National TT event in a row this weekend at the famed Springfield All Purpose Arena. Janisch’s TT fortunes go back to the Peoria, IL event last year, the Daytona TT, Arizona TT and now Springfield of this season. Riding the Roof Systems/ Ohlins Yamaha YZ450F, Janisch was fast all night as he won his heat, semi and the final event, as well as being second fastest qualifier. jumped the start and was sent to the penalty line. On the restart, Gauthier rolled the start again and was then given a ten second penalty, eliminating him for the evening. In the main event, fast qualifier Ryan Sipes looked to be the man to beat. Sipes grabbed the holeshot and immediately began to stretch a lead with Janisch second, followed by Mikey Rush. On lap three Sipes slid out and crashed exiting turn three, handing the lead to Janisch. Sipes was quick to remount, but in last place with no chance to make a comeback. Janisch rode a perfect race, never setting a tire wrong for the rest of the final. Mikey Rush was setting a hot pace as he started closing on Janisch in the later

laps after getting by Dan Bromley. Rush charged hard, but couldn’t close the gap. Because of Gauthier’s misfortune and Janisch’s win, Jesse took over the series points lead, 111-96 over Gauthier with Rush and Bromley closing in at 91 and 90 points respectively. With twelve more rounds to go, the championship is close, and it promises to be a great season ahead. Unfortunately, the Springfield Mile was postponed to Monday due to heavy rains that saturated the track late Saturday night. Then after the weather forecast changed for Monday the Mile was canceled and rescheduled for Saturday August 31st. That means a double header, Springfield Mile on Labor Day weekend!

emorial Day Weekend typically signals the start of summer, and having eighty degree sunny weather welcomed all the riders to the northwoods and Motosplat MX. Raise your hand if you get excited for a family trip planned up north to a cabin or camping. Maybe it’s a fishing trip with family or friends or possibly an outdoor adventure on play bikes or utv’s. Getting out and exploring the northwoods is half the fun while “up north.” The cool factor to this event is if you plan it right, you can do all that and moto in the same weekend. My daughter and I packed an extra pit bike and swim wear for the weekend for some potential adventures. Racers usually start coming up after work on Thursday to get a good spot in the pits and set up for the weekend of fun, starting with open practice on Friday and racing both Saturday and Sunday. After Friday practice, some headed off to a lake, others were grilling out while a buddy of mine and I decided to hop

on the pit bikes and go exploring. Saturday racing began with Vet A and B leading the day off - both classes had big turnouts. Nick Kubowski was able to find the smooth lines in B and take the win on his Donahue Super Sports Yamaha in the first moto. Chris Frisch finished second followed by Ben Kurtzweil, Nick Ambrosius, and Josh Tammi. The track’s famous gatekeeper, Tommy “Lot T” Perryman was hovering around the top five and finished just outside that with a sixth. I personally was thinking he was saving himself for an awesome second moto or his fireworks show Saturday night. tling for position up front. The track lays out well for multiple passing options as there are many inside-outside options in most corners. Combine that with the sand, elevation changes and the long layout and you get exciting racing. This time, Tammi was able to get to the front at the checkers and his 5-1 moved him up to third overall. Frisch held consistent in second and his 22 garnered the overall. Kubowski slipped to third for second overall. Kurtzweil held onto fifth in the moto and his 3-5 was good for fourth. Nick Hess stepped up from an eight in moto one to get fourth in second moto. +30A moto one saw the #434 of John Anetsberger from Christmas MX take the win over Luke Padrutt. Broc Stroebel, brother Aaron Stroebel and Keith Degrand rounded out the top five. Let me tell you, during the course of the moto, I didn’t see more than 20’ gap between Aaron Stroebel and Degrand, it was exciting race to watch. Moto two saw Broc Stroebel race the wheels off his Kawasaki to take the win and go 3-1 for second overall. Anetsberger settled in for second and the overall win.

Padrutt finished third as Degrand (5-4) got the better of Aaron Stroebel. Open A had additional purse money kicked in, increasing the incentive for some fast racing. Blake Hansen took the holeshot with Josh Philbrick right on his heels. Bubba Ponton was in third with Kyle Hameister fourth. The positions stayed that way to the checkers. Second moto, Philbrick got out front and stayed there and his 2-1 gave him the overall. Hansen finished second in the moto and overall ahead of Ponton. Jake Vaness stepped it up in the second moto and his 5-4 gave him fourth on the day ahead of Hameister. In Open B, Michael Youngthunder stuck his KTM front wheel into a small gap and was able to pull the holeshot and lead for a couple laps with Brock Noreen and Nick Randrup right on his tail. On lap three, Noreen was pushing hard in the back section and able to make a pass into the lead. Randrup put the same pressure on but Youngthunder was able to hold onto second place for the moto. Kole Olson took home fourth and Caden Damp rounded out the top five. In the second moto, Randrup pushed his new Yamaha into the lead and took home the win and the overall. Youngthunder ran third in the moto and his 2-3 net him second overall. Olson would get second in the moto and his 4-2 gave him the bronze medal. Noreen had bike issues that took him out of the overall running. Josh Philbrick won three A classes, getting top honors in 250A, Open A and +25A. A couple riders ended up taking home two overalls on the day and that included Deegan Vanvreede in 85cc 9-11 and Mini Open 9-13. Cole Godfrey got wins in 1424B/C and Schoolboy 1. Brandon Martyniak won both 250 and Open C and it was Wyatt Liebeck who made the trip back home after spending time down south at Club MX dominating 125cc class and 250B. As the day finished up, I prepped bikes for Sunday, took the dog for a walk, had some fun bench racing with buddies and settled in to watch some fireworks. The benefit of the long

weekend is no pressure to rush home Sunday night as Monday is a holiday. Too bad weekends couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all be four days long. Mother’s Day Hare Scramble Millville, Minnesota - May 12 By Mike Quinn

other’s Day was spent by many mothers, wives and girlfriends at Spring Creek Motocross Park for their annual Larson’s Cycle KTM Spring Hare Scrambles. The week leading up to the race had several days that rained all day so laying out the course was a challenge. Come race day the conditions were perfect. The temperature was cool. The sun was out and the trails shaped up well. There were 5 different course layouts for the days racing. The KTM Peewee track hosted the Peewee and Girls Jr. classes with a one hour race in which over half the trail was new for this year. Mike Quinn found lots of new trail for the 65cc racers and included that into the PeeWee course. There were lots of smiles as the young racers exited the track at race end. Zach Brown on his KTM taking the top honors among the twenty-one Peewee entrants. He finished with nine laps as did Boede Wallner, Jacob Peters and Eric Niedzielski as they filled out the top four. Fifth was Charlie Anderson with eight laps. In Girls Jr, coming from a long time D23 racing family was Cora Reschke putting in

eight laps for the win, followed by Brooke Niedzielski and Rose Niewhiehner. Shortly after the Premier class left the start line of the pro track for their race on another loop. Eighteen entries charged into the first turn and by the end of the first lap Wyatt McGrath had a thirty plus second lead. McGrath held the lead for the entire race and was the only entry to make six laps. McGrath is primarily a MX racer but he loves to try other disciplines and seems to do well at all types of racing. Following McGrath at races end was Travis Bloyer, racing a TM. Then Cooper Anderson on his Husky, followed by Cavan Heuer and Jaxon Nagel on his Kawasaki. Back to the PeeWee track for the next race where the 50cc Micro and Macro classes battled on a shortened course. As it turns out it was a bit too short as lap times were under fifty seconds. We are planning to solve this next year by running classes separately so we can lengthen the lay out of the course for the Macro racers. If numbers are any indication of our long term health, its looking up as we had a total of twentyseven racers on 50s. That is considerable increase from past years. Our Micro class

is made of mostly PW Yamahas while the Macro class is composed of the higher tech, faster 50cc bikes. The winner of the Macro race putting in sixteen fast laps was Jameson Olson, another moto racer trying his hand at off-road. Carter Niedzelski followed Jameson across the finish a mere twenty-six seconds later. In the Micro class two racers completed eleven laps with Silas Granle edging Aiden Magnine by a margin of five seconds for the win. Kayson Goncalves finished in third followed by Alex Romagnoli and Kolten Hoeft. Next on the race schedule we move to the Pro track for the C race which also includes our Junior, Sportsman, Masters 1, +60 and our +70 class. This was scheduled as a one hour race and the course wasn’t as long or demanding as the A/B/AA course. Very little of the pro mx track was included. Trail Boss Wiley Johannanson and crew nailed this layout as it was the most fun course I have ridden in a long time. The conditions were perfect the trails shaped up really well. There was a rut or two and more than a few rocks to watch for but overall it was just plain fun and challenging. Overall C came

out the 250C class. Completing five laps in an hour thirteen minutes, Thomas Brown made quick work of the course on his KTM. Second place Trevor Nelson came in only nine seconds back, The only other rider to finish the same laps was third place Jaden Abbott. A total of 121 C racers along with 25 old guys and the Women’s class left the line at 11:30 for the one hour race. The Women’s class was won by Madison

Siebanaler with a three second lead over Courtney Gregory. Third place went to Cassie Flanagan. All three put four laps in. The winner of the Golden Masters or 70+ class was Steve Reschke who is pushing his 50th consecutive year of racing in D23. That in itself is an incredible feat. The last race of the day left the start line at 1:15 with the AA class on the first row. By the end of lap three Logan Kittock had over a minute on second place Devon Jirik. During that third lap a flat tire sidelined Kittock in the pits for wheel change. Jirik moved into the lead and re-

mained there to the end. Second place went to Luke Wilder a minute later, followed by Matt Lindberg with Jack Lane IV and Mitchell Treichler rounding out the top five. Matt Stavish was sixth AA, which is a real feat especially considering he is over the 50 year old mark. He has always been fast and continues to ride extremely well. The A class was loaded with many of our perennial heavy hitters. The 250A class and the overall honors went Logan Cipala, a former champion hillclimber. He has apparently learned to go fast horizontally as well as up hill. Overall B came out the 250B class, going to another hillclimber, Jacob Prebe. Our vertical racers did really well racing off-road. We hope to see more of them.

Don’t miss this once a year spectacle! The infamous Area 51 will give riders thrills and chills as they try to conquer the Troll. Separate loop for micro/ macro.

The hills and gullies provide for a challenging course with just enough flat ground to give a racer a breather. I enjoyed watching competitors from other disciplines show to try their hand at off-road racing. All the participants had a great day of racing, even if they were a little worse for the wear. Lets hope the weather is good for the fall scrambles hosted by the Golden Eagles in October. Until then, keep riding, racing and training and enjoying this sport. t’s June and there has only been one event that hasn’t been a mudder. Racing this year isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s been a real test of endurance and fortitude. One of the double edge swords of this process is that we all start some of the most inexperienced riders early in the day. The idea is they get the best and least tore up path to run. But this year they also get the muddiest and slickest. The Fox Valley crew decided to wait a little bit as they did some track work on the mini moto course before sending the 65cc Beginner class out. This helped the kids get at least some of their course in without the constant struggle of keeping upright. It also helped the parents from needing oxygen be-

WFO Promotion’s Tanner Whipple has been riding a dirt bike since he was able to walk. He shows up to an event and riders know he’ll be force to recon with. There were six riders in AA class today. Matt Mcdonald had knee work and a layoff is steadily improving. Jarred Hall moved to AA this season along with Tj Nees and Tony Biagi. Greg Rogers who is normally bangin laps on the moto track signed up in the big boy class for his first ever HS and they all kept a good pace early. But this kind of racing isn’t about who is just the fastest. It’s as much a strategy and en-

durance test. Whipple started knocking out 15-20 second a lap faster times and it was clear if he could keep this pace and keep it on two wheels it would be hard for anyone to keep him close. The race really was between Hall’s Cycles Jarred Hall and Nees. Hall ran a solid second early in the race til a slight mistake allowed McDonald to get by. Nees all this time was upping his pace and finding traction in the hunt for a higher position. Dad and Mom cheering him on by rock creek and keeping him informed on his position. Last lap, no need for them to point, Hall and Nees were hammering out

the lap with intensity. Nees couldn’t find a place to pass on the west side of the course but proved he could hang with the guys in the class. Whipple was the most consistent on lap times the whole day varying only a few seconds. Riley Walters came out today and was one of the first Women to cross the finish line in the mud covered tricky morning event. Last month’s Cycle USA “cover girl” Alli Kocher was asked "do you have on matching gear this week!" The answer was no, but it didn’t matter, she was just as mud covered as she was a month earlier! Darcie Tatum who has been racing FVOR for a very long time put in a solid race for third, which brings us to Cassie’s and Davey’s mom Crystal Fairfield, racing her first race. When it was announced that dads and husbands could trail marshall she boldly announced, " I can pick up my own bike"... this comment was remembered as Sunday’s race began. Hats off to her accomplishment, just like her daughter in the 50cc class she did great and with the announcement at the end of the race, "I never fell down!" This writer’s reply would be consistent with stating, ok then you need to go faster! But we only typed this and didn’t say it out loud! +30B had the normal host of characters. Jeff Nelson finished a disgruntled fourth place, Josh Buchen was on fire this day with some solid laps and finished strong gaining a lap on Peter Kavsky. Derek Piecha grabbed third. Hollywood (Nelson) kept falling in the open field area making time back up in the timber and mx track areas but his Achilles would bust his butt every time up there and kept him from contending for the lead. Drake Fairfield ran in the lead for a few laps but all the running after Davey and Cassie in the morning kids race likely took it’s toll during his race, as he dropped to fifth. Mickey Martin got a slow start in the Quad A class but rebounded by passing up to the lead and keeping Chris Breitwieser in check for the later part of the race. Bobby Cabay was the only +30 rider today but took a third overall and was hanging right with the A class in the slick conditions.

Fox Valley Off Road seems to handle the wet conditions well as when these conditions present themselves a flat no hill course which is all repairable is used. Talking to Travis Ward at the end of the day, he stated, "we have been working every dry day on the hills and washed out trails with new dirt to be able to have a more challenging course layout and utilize many more areas of the park. We simply have not had enough dry times to make it all happen, but once it does dry up, riders will be pleasantly surprised and challenged with the repaired areas. The next double header event will be at the end of July and we are looking forward to being ready for that event with a hill infested layout!â&#x20AC;? Valley Raceway MX Returns! Crystal Falls, Michigan - June 1/2 By Jeri Nyberg

or just over a year the pits stood empty and the track was quiet at Valley Raceway, but a sunny weekend in June was quickly about to change that. After a year off the schedule, Valley Raceway in Crystal Falls, MI made its return to the District 16 schedule with a double header event. A beautiful Friday evening at the track gave the promise of what was to come for the rest of the weekend. Saturday started off with sunshine and a great turnout of 174 entries wanting to get back to riding at Valley Raceway. One of the sponsors of Saturday’s race, Race Driven, (whom recently purchased Zambons North Country Sales Inc.), is a current parts manufacturer in the UTV and ATV world looking to make their mark in the

motorcycle side of things. Race Driven wanted to give back to the riders on Saturday. Class winners would receive a set of brake pads for their overall win. As racing got underway, the Mini 65 class found themselves up to the line early in the order. This class is filled with talented riders. Once the gate dropped, Chad “J.Boogie” Schmitt jumped out front to take an early lead and never looked back. As the 65’s negotiated the first lap through the sand, the running order started to form. Kane Kalies and Cole Goedert settled into second and third and as lap three began, Chase Dionne was beginning to catch the pair. It would all come down to the last corner and to his misfortune, the sand claimed Goedert, allowing Dionne to pass and cross the line in third place. Rounding out the top five was Jaggyr Wolf. Moto two began with Schmitt grabbing

another holeshot. This time it was Carter Millette finding himself in second with Dionne and Kalies behind. Dionne and Kalies were both able to maneuver around Millette, with Kalies leading the way until a fall moved him back into fourth place. Kalies wasted no time jumping back on his bike and again moving past Millette, setting his sights back on Dionne eventually making the pass. The top four had settled in by lap three, but fifth place rider Jakob Ottenad was starting to feel some pressure on his back tire as Jasmin Jonas started to reel him in. The battle for fifth place also ended up coming down to the last corner as Ottenad got caught up in the sand and Jonas was able to sneak around him. Millette would finish fourth overall and Jonas’ 6-5 finishes gave her a fifth place finish for the day. Towards the end of the race order were the ten riders in the 2 Stroke B/C class, and

they were ready to get out and tackle the sandy track. Off to an early lead was Colin Hass on his Yamaha. Close behind was the KTM of Trevor Edwards as third place was still being fought over at the infamous “sand hill” by Jake Hunger and Kyle Kohls, with Kohls eventually breaking away. Preston Maki was able to come from mid-pack up to fourth place and Elliot Bennett worked his way up to fifth. The battle for the lead was beginning to heat up between Hass and Edwards before Edwards ended up going down. Bennett was able to take advantage of the sand claiming Maki, and was starting to reel in Kohls at the checkers flew. At the end of the race the riders waited for each other to finish and gave a round of high-fives and thumbs up. A true showing of sportsmanship and enjoyment of racing together. In an era of disappearing motocross tracks, it was a breath of fresh air to see Valley Raceway return to the District 16 schedule, providing a track for riders to come and enjoy racing for years to come. emorial Day weekend Berm Benders Raceway was the proud host of the first Minnesota Warrior Class Race sponsored by the Veteran MX foundation. The Warrior class is in exclusive military motocross class celebrating veterans and active/ retired duty personnel of the US Armed Forces. This two moto format promoter class races on Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend with special prizes and swag for the racers provided by Lucas Oil, Fly Racing, Throttle Syndicate and Ride MN. The mission of Veteran MX is to create a brotherhood of support within the moto community for those who have served. It also recognizing their service and sacrifices. Sunday morning first race of the day, nine men of virtue and vigor of varying ages and abilities lined up for the Warrior class. Bruce Schaapveld, Marine Veteran 1975 to 1979 blasted to the front followed by Zachary Briggs, Air Force enlisted from 2012 to present. Kerry Anstine, Air Force veteran 1992 to 2000, guarded his third place position before getting passed by Scott Hoag, Marine Veteran ‘89 to ‘93, at the first tabletop. Briggs pushed Schaapveld throughout the first two laps as Anstine and Hoag battle back-and-forth for third. Then Briggs launched the triple to slip by Schaapveld. Meanwhile Anstine and Hoag were still side-by-side through every section before Anstine finally locked down the third place spot. In moto two Schaapveld grabbed the holeshot again with Hoag and Briggs on his six followed by John Dahlen, US Army Veteran ‘76 to ‘80. Briggs and Hoag battled again through the first few sections before Briggs broke free and then made his move for first passing Schaapveld in the whoops. This set up a fight for second between Hoag and Schaapveld. It took a while, but finally Hoag took Schaapveld in the switchbacks for second as Anstine now challenged Schaapveld for third. Shortly after, Schaapveld went down in a corner, and giving his position away. The overall going to Briggs with a 1-1 with Hoag fighting for second (4-2) ahead of Anstine (3-3). The announcer read their names, branch and service dates as they rode around the track to the song American Soldier by Toby Keats. Bruce Schaapveld had a special message the announcer read reminding us of all the sacrifices made and debt owed to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. The meaning of the day and the tribute given brought a light shower that mimicked the tears shed by Veterans and civilians alike. The eight men then shook off their solemn attitude and

switched gears into racing mode to race day two of their special weekend. Throughout the weekend there was an extra sense of patriotism as the racers of the Warrior Class bonded over service stories and track tales, parents taught toddlers to never let their small American flags touch the ground and the national anthem sung live was never so honorably observed. antasy Moto was finally blessed with great weather for a race weekend at the Tigerton, WI MX Park. The three day weekend consisting of open ride on Friday and nonstop racing action Saturday and Sunday with an Area Qualifier combined with District 16 points (Sunday). Weather prior to the weekend however was skeptical at best with snow and rain and whatever else Mother Nature has decided to throw our way this year. Scott Biese made sure he kept the track packed prior to the race and his strategy paid off as he didn’t till it up and prep it until right before the race and this paid off all weekend. The big concern however was going to be the pit area, as the north side of the pit area is a bit lower and can be soft for parking big rigs, however, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such organized and efficient parking job by the crew. As my dad used to say, stuff 10 pounds in a 5 pound bag and the result might not be good, but for it worked out just fine with the pit area packed full. Open Pro Sport had the fastest lap times all weekend and it was Josh Philbrick who claimed top honors. Kyle Hameister, Justin Wolf, Ty Tyrrell, and Nathan Everett rounded out the top five. Tigerton is the type of track that seems the same for everyone, but it sure is fun watching these guys find the little edge. Subtle things, like scrubbing the domain or tripling in a section that’s meant to be doubled, or finding a line that no one else has been on or just plain hammering through the rough stuff. Philbrick also took home the +25 honors beating Tyrrell and Hameister. John Vandezande and Luke Padrutt rounded out the top five.

the riders. There were no jumps and just a couple corners and straight’s and one off camber section, but after talking to several riders and watching the section it was evident that this was a great place to make some passes. The corners became really rutted and rough both coming in and all the way through the exits. 250C was an action packed class and at the front it was Elijah Tetzlaff taking both moto wins. Behind him, fighting over second was Brandon Martyniak and Ranger Flinchum. These two traded positions and spots before Martyniak went 3-2 for second overall. Dylan Knoch who went 5-4 took home fourth overall ahead of the 4-5 of Isaac Therrien. Too many battles to list here but each moto these top five battled for every inch of space to beat each other. Chad Johnson has found racing again and now he and his family are back at the track. Johnson put on a clinic in the +30A class, taking home the top spot. When I asked him if he was trying to qualify for Lorretta Lynns, he just smiled and said it was fun to be back at the track. You won’t find a more humble champ and if you want to go fast kids, make sure to watch him when he is on the track. The cool part is the next Johnson generation is racing and the family is back.

Sometimes life gets in the way with school, work, finances or whatever, but even if you take a break from racing, if you are able to figure out how to get back to the track in some shape or form that’s all that matters. Broc Stroebel took second overall ahead of Andy Zambon, Padrutt and Cody Wills. The Women’s class had a bunch of ladies lined up and it was Bryanne Wolf going 1-1 to score win. Sierra Heindl pulled down second place beating Desirae Steier, Katherine Vanderwerf and Dana Hanna. 65cc 7-11 saw Ryder Skodras take home the first place trophy going 1-1. Grant Neubauer was consistent on his new YZ65 going 3-3 for second overall. Chase Dionne rounded out the podium with his 4-5 scores. he weather gods were either not paying attention or Megacross tonight snuck one by them. Raining everywhere in the state, but here light clouds and windy drying conditions made the Megacross crew work the water equipment for the first time of the 2019 season. New for tonight's event was some added lighting to corners that have been darker then desired for many years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harbor Freight or Menards must have had a saleâ&#x20AC;? was the chuckle of the night, but once the lights were fired up those corners were brighter and once the new Smart Lighting fixtures are placed - riders might be needing a higher level of sun screen... Over 300 entries attended tonight's event with 50cc 4-8 being a huge class of beginners who many had their first ever race. Twenty little tykes pushed off the line and held those pdubs and crf's screaming down the start into the first turn. They must have been putting in some seat time because the normal run to pick them up as they fall over didn't happen much. Rylen Hofmaster made short work of the class. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shown all season that he is following in dad's footsteps with solid speed and consistency. Wyatt Johnson kept up for a bit but settled into second with Smart Lighting's Holden Lamkin getting up from a small hiccup to push to third, just behind him. These two

brotherly love was Jayson Crawford and Noah Lee who kept each other busy for the battle of their own. The top four riders in this class are all pretty solid woods/ offroad riders as well. Tonight's Megacross event was one of the only events in the immediate area to run and like usual when the off-road racing floods out those riders want to race and come out to bang a few laps. There were quite a few bark busters to be found in all the classes. Tommy Hofmaster won three classes tonight, but surprise was Conner Robinson, he pulled a great holeshot in the 250A main and someone put a bur in his saddle as he kept Tommy honest all moto. His corner speed and composure kept BWR's Brian White at bay and likely is one of the first motos he has ridden where he was totally "cleared" by medical. Rj Mackenzie took the fourth and Gavin Sienkiewicz fifth. 250B class saw Matt St John pull one of his patented holeshots as Huntr Grampp

he Gustafson family graciously invited WOTA to use their property again this year, and as usual it was fantastic. The weather forecast was for 58 and rain all weekend, but it was sunny and 70 Saturday, so this affected the turnout, but those that came out were rewarded. The property is all woods to the South, and an abandoned water park to the North. The water park was just being built when somebody pulled the PLUG (pun intended).

The water park area is very open with mostly gravel, but there are also some nice hills and larger rocks. Some of the area’s best riders were riding the NATC National, so the top class of the day was Expert, which was won by the one and only Keith Johnson riding an old Montesa. Jamison Stachel took second with consistent 24, 23, 22 loop scores, losing by just three points. The Advanced class was very close. The youngest rider in the class, Kyle Hach, took home his first Advanced class win with 47 points. Wade Murphy-Price had a 23 points

first loop and then had two 14 point loops which were the best of anyone. Those two loops got him on the second step of the podium only four points back. There were two scary logs that were wet and BIG, but we survived! Section #1 looked like an Illinois tollway construction zone with class arrows everywhere. Fred Sassi took the win with 45 points. His son Greg hurt his knee, so it appears Fred will have to carry the Sassi name for the time being. Three points behind was Brookfield, WI rider Kurt Muente. After just six sections Fred had built a five point lead and that held the rest of the day. Adam Gustafson took the final podium spot by edging Mark Misek. They tied on points, and cleans, so it went to the next tie breaker, and Adam had more 1’s. Travis Lange finished fifth and Spencer Stone loved the ROCKS finishing sixth. Yes another PUN, sorry! The Novice class is a mix of new riders on 250/300cc motorcycles and kids riding the electric OSET. Ben Ezell had loops of 8, 9 and 4 points, with that last loop being the best of the class. Kris Tibor took second just three points back with 10, 9 and 5 point loops. Gasoline powered Steve Schmidt from Muskego rounded out the podium. The Youth class was PACKED with talent. Will Loer from Illinois took a hard fought win with 36 points. A tie for second place was won by Kaspar Tibor over Veronica Misek, they both were just one point behind Will. Fourth

30 minutes, then great after that and 70 degrees again. Do not believe the weather forecast! Expert Class the roles were reversed with Jamison Stachel taking the win on his confused Sherco. It’s confused because the gas tank is under the seat area. Six points behind was Keith Johnson, so over the two days only three points separated these two. Doug Hay took the Advanced Intermediate points leader rider Kurt Muente went 2-2 over the weekend class win over place was another single point behind, Kyle Hach by ten points. Kyle had a crash Ahmet Kimball had 38, ahead of Ivan early on the first loop which tweaked his Misek. So that’s five riders within five bike a little. Then Kaspar turned on his inner Pat Smage and dropped just six points the rest of the day while Will dropped twelve. Kaspar edged out a slim one point win. Ivan Misek rounded out the podium, with Veronica Misek four points back in fourth. Ivan gets to trash talk until the Baraboo, WI event at the end of June. Ahmet Kimball was fifth. The Derek Lange show continued in Vintage, winning on the Yamaha 175. Kevin Huber took his Suzuki 250 to second, and Pat Doll who is recovering from rotator cuff surgery wrapped up a third. Congratulations to WOTA’s own Pat Smage who just won his 11th Pro National Championship.

osh Boaz ran strong at the Spring Creek Park Memorial Day Weekend race, claiming the overall wins in 1424A and the Open A class plus nabbing second in the 250A class. A pretty solid run for the young rider who last year was dominating the B classes. Boazâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nemesis in the 250A class was Zack Williams, who has been a long time front runner at any of the District 23 races he enters. These two riders were probably the fastest around the track on this day, but there was plenty of competition in their classes and the others as well with over 850 entries for the day. The traditional format for the Memorial Day weekend is to run a race on Monday as well but soaking rains brought the racing plans for Monday to a halt. The track was in prime condition for Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motos and the crew pulled off the day without a hitch. The Open A riders blasted into moto one with a nearly full gate and chaos reigned as there were multiple collisions in turn one. Boaz was unhindered as he was up front and with some of his major competition on the ground he began to surge ahead of the pack. Nick Jackson, Cody Williams and Jake Loberg were next in the running order for a couple of laps but Loberg slipped by the other two to take over second for the next two laps. Williams, riding a 125 twostroke was keeping that thing singing strong and shot into second on the last lap. Loberg crossed the line in third with Gavin Wilkins

slipping by Jackson late in the race to hold fourth at the flag. Moto two: Boaz and Wilkins ran down the long start straight and rounded the first turn nearly simultaneously. Wilkins may have had the lead briefly but Boaz prevailed to hold the lead at the end of lap one. Zack Williams was running strong in third with Loberg fourth over Ben Adamson and Cody Williams. Zack was pouring on the coal and zapped Wilkins in the whoops to take

over second on the next lap. Soon he was zeroing in on Boaz and as they plummeted down the hill to the base of Mount Martin he made a strong outside pass to take the lead. It looked like he would have the victory as he started to gap Boaz, glory was fleeting though as his drive chain took a leave of absence, leaving him motionless after leading a single lap. Boaz inherited the lead and went on for the win. Wilkins ran in for second with Cody Williams on

the 125 pressuring in third. Ben Adamson had a good run for fourth over Austin Aspros as they rounded out the top five. Loberg’s eighth put him into fourth overall. Cade Groen started strong in the first moto of the 65cc 7-11 class, leading early with Tanner Johnson and Kyler Hagedorn in pursuit. Johnson clawed his way into the lead on lap two with Groen challenged by Hagedorn and then James Schaffer. Johnson led the way past the checkered with Hagedorn and Schaffer crossing the line ahead of Groen and Crayten Roberts. The moto two holeshot was a possession of Kai Morgan but Groen made a move to take over out front during the first lap. an & Louie Lauters each took home a first place award from the first flat track motorcycle races held at the Lafayette County Speedway in almost twenty years. Dan claimed the Classics division win, while Louie topped the Vintage+Twins division. Racers from four states participated in the event, which highlighted the 53rd annual CanoeFest activities in Darlington. A solid grandstand crowd took in the racing action on the 3/8-mile track. Seven doublepoint District 16 classes and two non-district classes were offered. “This track has a different shape that made it really fun”, commented Hooligan winner JJ Flairty. DJ Slosser, the 505cc Amateur winner who had raced at the track on an 80cc all those years ago, felt the track was much better this time around. “This track is definitely fast and it is a good-looking facility. It would probably be an amazing race at night. The shape of the track lends to trying different lines, and the fast line might change as the day goes on.” 80s Singles winner Jim Kirschbaum said “The track was really nice. The crowd in the grandstands was exceptional!” The Speedway had run their full stock car program the night before, which left a hardpacked groove for the motorcycles come Saturday morning. The unusual shape of turns 1-2 meant that several riders were changing gearing often in an effort to find

the ideal set-up. Flairty kicked off the show with a wireto-wire win in the Hooligan division over Dan Lauters, Louie Lauters, Erich Olson, Jim Kirschbaum, and Tyler Eisenhauer. Flairty’s victory wheelie down the entire length of the back straightaway got the crowd on their feet! Slosser and Ethan Rosine ran nose-to-tail for the entire 505cc Amateur final. Slosser and Rosine had a leaf spring fail on their trailer while enroute to the track and spent several hours struggling to patch together a make-shift suspension system. Arriving late, and only getting a handful of laps of practice, they nonetheless finished 1-2, with Cole Andresen, Colin Weber, Jacob McCutchin and Shane Westphal rounding out the field. Dan Lauters and Larry Pettis won the two Classics heat races, with Lauters earning the pole position in the final, but Big Wave Dave Kruck stole the spotlight and led the first two laps. Lauters worked his way past on lap three, with Pettis following through on lap four. Kruck held on for third over Matt McNall, Louie Lauters, George Patrick, and Steve Wasser. Ethan Rosine used a line he had found late in the 505cc Amateur final to charge to the front of the 250cc Amateur final and hold off Cole Andresen for the win. Vince Jung and Tyler Tazioli rounded out the field. Louie Lauters used the acceleration of his Harley-Davidson XR to grab the holeshot in the Vintage+Twins final with Jim

Kirschbaum and Roger Johnson hot on his heels. Dan Lauters held down the fourth position in front of Pete Skipworth and Randy Reed. Kirby’s Yamaha 650 was no match for the Harley XR, and the field finished in that order. Vince Jung led every lap of the 85cc Final over Izzy Andresen. Izzy had problems getting off the line, which put her at a disadvantage that she was unable to overcome. Regardless, an entire section in the grandstands was cheering loudly for the only female competitor of the day. A good field of 1980s Singles turned out, and it was great to hear their exhausts bouncing off the walls again. Chuck Clark grabbed the holeshot on his Honda and led the opening lap before Jim Kirschbaum thundered past on his Rotax. By mid-race, Mike Yogerst’s line had come in and he reeled in Clark, making the pass on lap seven. Randy Reed tried to follow Yogerst past Clark, but missed his line and allowed Shane Westphal to take over the fourth spot. At the finish, Kirby led Yogerst, Clark, Westphal, Reed, and Steve Wasser to the checkereds. The 1970s Vintage 250-360 class saw Tom Pratt and his screaming Yamaha twin take the win over Matt McNall’s booming BSA single. Dan Peterson led every lap of the Senior final, but Jim Kirschbaum kept pressure on him lap after lap. Matt Jensen, Steve Wasser, and Chuck Clark traded positions 3-5 throughout the event, with the finishing order reading Peterson, Kirby, Jensen, Wasser, and Clark. ith everyone anxious to ride, and thankful for a break in the weather, Muddy Waters MX hosted over 220 entries. Again, they had a lot of riders who have never been to the facility before. The natural terrain and “fun” factor were an absolute hit with these first timers! The large number of entries in each class made for some awesome battles all day long.

One of the larger motos of the day was from a combined moto of 250A and 250B. Twenty-three riders lined up to battle and put on a great show for the spectators. From both gate drops, the action came from mid-pack as A class rider Nick Wallace put on a clinic against a stacked group of fast locals, coming away with a 1-1 for the overall win. He did the same in Open A against another fast and talented group of riders. From the 250B gate drop, Ryder Schnowske led the way in his first 250B race at Muddy Waters MX, proving he could race with and beat the fast B guys. He proved that not only once, but twice, going 1-1 for the overall. Schnowske had another statement ride in both 14-24 motos showing great improvement, earning another 11 and overall first place finish. One of the many exciting races of the day took place during intermission down on the small track where 50cc (4-8) riders get to compete. Parker Campbell

and Brock Day went head to head for the win in the non-points class. Day took an early lead and seemed to have it in the bag, but Campbell kept worked his way up until they were within a bike’s length of each other. These two battled hard until Campbell made a small mistake going for the pass and went down. Second moto for these little guys went just about the same but without any crashes. They were just happy to ride their and of course pumped on their massive trophies. It was such an awesome day of beautiful weather and great racing. ztalan pulled off their second race of the 2019 season, a Pro-Am and it was a great and impressive event. The $8000 purse added a lot of incentive for the A riders. All the classes throughout the day were completely stacked. Riders, spectators - everyone won today. Everyone was a little worried towards the end of practice. It started to rain pretty good and the track conditions were getting pretty slippery. The first couple of races were a little more on the muddy side but then it turned out to be excellent track conditions with super deep ruts making for some good challenging racing. The day’s A classes were stacked. Twenty-five fast guys in Open and eighteen riders in 250A. And for the second time Cody Williams was crowned king of Azzie, winning all four of his motos in 250A and Open A. He was completely on another level, including taking the 250A win on a Husky 125 two stroke. In both 250 motos he didn’t get the starts he was looking for, coming out around sixth. He had to push his way through the pact. Having Tylor Skodras leading the race in moto one and

Taylor Strauss running second, Williams knew he was really going to have to work for the win. Skodras held the lead for a solid part of moto one while Williams was charging through the pact, it became a challenge for him to get around Strauss. Williams was finally able to take him and put his sights on Skodras. When Williams finally got around him, he really checked out. Moto two was just as exciting but a little less work for Cody. Its pretty fun watching these guys do fifteen minutes plus two laps, especially when all the riders are so close in talent. I was most impressed by Conner Burger. Burger is still really young and just full of talent on a dirt bike. Burger is only 23 points out from getting his pro card. In moto one Burger was able to hold off Cody VanBuskirk for a very respectable

fifth place finish. Also beating other heavy hitter locals like Brandon Pope and Nick Wallace. In moto two it was quite a battle between Burger and Nick Wallace. Burger was able to get around Wallace for another fifth place finish. I’m excited to see what this kid ends up accomplishing. He has a very bright future ahead of him. Lance Gilbert in +40B/C.

Conner Burger after the second moto, “I think I came in needing twenty-three points for my pro card and came out only needing nine more so I’m really close. In the second moto Nick Wallace and I were both riding really good I just played it safe and was being patient until I found a spot where I thought I was faster and could pass him. We ended up getting together and he went down. I honestly was pretty pumped it rained in the morning because sun beating on that track all day was not going to be good, so the track held moisture the whole day, and ended up being really good.” We also caught up with Justin Wolf as he just got back from a broken femur. Justin rode great in 250A for it being one of his first races back with a ninth place overall for the day. Wolf, “Track conditions were awesome! The rain in the morning and the cloud coverage for part of the day made the track fantastic! I can't thank all the track workers for working there butts off. I haven't seen an A classes so stacked in Wisconsin for a while - it was awesome! I haven't been riding as much as I'd like to be but was happy with how the day went. The first Open A moto I pulled the holeshot and gave it my all taking third, but was shot for my

other motos. It was a great day of racing and I was happy to leave healthy!" Another exciting race of the day came in the Women’s class. In moto one Erin Pusateri dominated the track taking the win with Dana Hanna second and Brook Philbrick third. Moto two on the other hand was a battle to the finish. All three riders

were super close the whole race. Pusateri grabbed the holeshot and came out of the first corner in the lead. She held on for half of the race before Philbrick and Hanna were able to get around her. It was one of the most exciting races of the day. It was awesome to watch the battle. Philbrick ended up with the overall followed by Hanna and Pusateri. Their scores were all tied up (4’s for them all) with that all important second moto determining it all. It was a solid day. Some of the ruts were absolutely gnarly. The turnout was fantastic and the track was great. What could've been a mudfest turned out to be just enough rain to keep the racing close, the challenge alive and the gates full.

Maloney pushed his Indian under the Kawasaki exiting turn two on lap five, and Orr muscled past Schwarzenbacher to third in turn three. Maloney took the white flag with Orr on his heels. Orr duplicated his earlier move and muscled under Maloney at the apex of turns 3-4 and took the win by half a bike length over a surprised Maloney. Janisch, Mischler, Cose, Eslick, Inderb-

esse Janisch finally climbed to the highest step of the podium at the 35th Annual Dairyland Classic with a wireto-wire win on his Yamaha YZ450F in the Junior/Expert final. The current AFT Singles National point leader – known for his prowess on TT courses – has always been a factor at the Dairyland Classic, but to date his highest finish has been runner-up in 2016. Janisch is having his best year ever, with three AFT National wins plus the championship lead. Eighty-four racers from eleven states signed up for the five racing divisions. Janisch led the opening heat race from start-tofinish, taking Danny Eslick on a Honda single framer and defending winner Jay Maloney on an Indian FTR750 to the final. Chad Cose rode his U.S. Suzuki RM-Z450 to the win heat race #2 over Jeremy Orr and Jake Walter. Morgen Mischler, Mike Inderbitzin, and Hunter Even earned final berths through the third heat race. Kolton Featherston claimed the Semi win on the white flag lap to take the win over Brock Schwarzenbacher and Jake Fell. The Jim Sumner Memorial Dash For Cash pitted the fastest single and fastest twins brands in a staggered start. Brock Schwarzenbacher (Kaw 650) sat on the pole, with Jay Maloney (Indian FTR750), Jeremy Orr (KTM 450), Chad Cose Expert winner Jesse Janisch

itzin, and Orr lined up in the front row, with Maloney, Even, Walter, Featherston, Schwarzenbacher, and Fell rounding out the field for the 15-lap Junior/ Expert final. Janisch grabbed the holeshot over Mischler, Orr, Inderbitzin, Eslick, and Cose. Mischler tried his patented outside move in turn two on lap two, but was unable to get enough bite to make the pass. Eslick took over the runner-up spot on lap four, but was passed by Cose on lap six. The final order was set by mid-race, as Janisch took a jubilant win over Cose, Mischler, Eslick, Maloney, and Inderbitzin. Loyal Prach sat on the pole for the Amateur Final after winning the fastest heat race over Emmett Sund and Hannah Lange. Ethan Rosine claimed the other Amateur heat race over Bam Bam Ramsey and Sonny Johnson. Sund grabbed the holeshot in the final over Rosine, Johnson, Prach, Cole Andresen, Ramsey, Mark Zeidler, and Ezra Brusky. Sund and Rosine held position for the entire eight-lap final. Johnson held the third spot until the last lap when he dropped to fifth behind Brusky and Prach. Brusky put on the charge of the night, recovering from eighth on the opening lap to grab the last podium spot on the last lap. Munzinger rounded out the top seven at the flag. Michael Lange led every lap of the Board Tracker final on his 1921 H-D Banjo Two-Cam. Kory Postotnik ran second on his 1925 H-D JD Twin. Josh Young claimed third on his 1927 H-D after Casey Ketterhagen low-sided – unhurt – on his 1925 H-D factory FHAC. This is still one fo the crowd’s favorite parts of the night. Houpt Memorial Hooligan race. Michael Van Langen, defending winner Jordan Houpt, and Josh Young earned spots in the final from the first heat race. Danny Mischler, Nick Mataya, and Danny Murre transferred from the second heat. Danny Holbus, Louie Lauters, and Justin Limberg finished 12-3 in heat three. Benny Carlson, Dan Lauters, and Mark Martinich punched their tickets to the final in the last heat. Mischler would sit on the pole with the fastest heat race time. Jeremy DeRuyter, Drew Saunders, Alex Brooks, Tyler Eisenhauer, and John Brooks finished at the front of the Hooligan CMain. Chris Hansen, Jason Schreffler, Sam Fischer, Hannah Lange, and Rick Ginter topped the B-Main. Van Langen jumped to the front of the 10-lap Hooligan Final over Carlson, Mischler, Houpt, and Mataya. Mataya charged past both Mischler and Houpt for third on lap three; Houpt shuffled past Mischler on lap four for fourth; Mataya charged past Carlson for second on lap five.
