New Twilight “Night” Racing Series comes to Aztalan. Brian McCanna is helping lead an effort with his fellow club members to bring some limited Saturday night motocross to the facility. Right now it will be all about kids and select pit bike classes, but he wouldn’t close the door on that expanding in the future. McCanna, “Right now this is all about the youth of our sport and us wanting to support them. We want to give these young riders another chance to race and ride here so on select Saturday nights before a Sunday motocross we are going to bring in a bunch of lights for the top half of the track. For now we’ll have pit bikes, women, and 85cc and smaller classes. It will start off this season as a three race series and maybe we can turn it into a full series for next year. Franklin Equipment is helping us out

Cambridge Sprint Enduro Norsemen MC did a great job on this event again, and interest continues to grow Cambridge, Minnesota - May 5/6 by Paul Otto

or the second year in a row the Norsemen Motorcycle Club took a stab at a Sprint Enduro. After having some learning at the first go around it looks as they did their due diligence in fixing what issues came about. Although you never stop improving or learning from year to year we can all say the job was done well! Saturday was the big kick off for the Youth riders. With two sections set up the riders had to complete each one twice. The rider with the lowest time was then your winner. The Siebenaler clan came out of the gates showing they are a force to be reckoned with. Allison took home first in the Girls class followed by Bethany Beckel and Cora Reschke. Allison’s brother Charlie and sister Madison went one - two in the Premier class giving this family top honors and an excellent start on the season. Let’s not forget about Gavin Loberg. He rode hard and wasn’t far off the pace. Third place still

Last year’s 200B winner Kyle Magnuson returned to show his win was no fluke, beating some very good riders in Chanler Lokken and Cole Nash. For the fast guys there was still three test sections, but riders had to do each test four times and keep track of how many times they did them. Making sure you do each section the right amount of times is critical for your score. If you fail to complete all the laps your time is drastically affected. ing in there, but the family and career life has taken a forefront to training and practice. Logan Kittock, Nick Swenson and Austin Pogreba took the top three positions. No major surprise here as these three were battling for the wins last year. Some notable fast A riders who placed in the top six were 250A rider Robert Lane with a fourth and Open A’s Scott Jendro taking sixth overall. Keeping his winning ways was Jeremy Schmidt in the 40A class as he topped Garrett Hansen whom made his way back to action after taking a year off followed by Todd Sigfrid who also returned after years off. Great to see you two back in action and still finding your way to the top. The race received good reviews overall. It seems as riders are taking a liking to the newer event style and some are even requesting for more of it. A good reminder for all racers to run the number given to you by the district as this can and did create some major problems for the scoring personal. A special Thank You goes out to Dan Banks from Justin Beach for possibly saving his life during a med-
ical emergency. Thanks to Jason Goth for stepping up as trail boss, the Banks clan for taking on the scoring and all the Norsemen crew for their roll in making this successful event happen. Dyracuse Gran Prix Event Race kicks off District 16 Off-Road season Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin - April 28 By Doug Forstner
T
he Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club quite often hosts the first motocross points race of the year at the Dyracuse Recreational Facility in the town of Rome. This year they planned to host a two day event by having a Grand Prix Race on Saturday and then the motocross race on Sunday. The Gran Prix pays points towards Hare Scrambles, and would kick off the 2018 D16 Off-Road season. Less than a week before the weekend, the club was still unsure if they would be able to run as Wisconsin had one of the worst snow storms in recent history just a week earlier. The storm dumped up to two feet of snow. Snowmobiles and plow trucks were about the only things out on the roads. As is the norm for Wisconsin, Mother Nature produced a solid week of sun and temps above freezing and the track actually had a little dust on it while grooming it for the races. It doesn’t hurt that the majority of the soil at the facility is pure sugar sand. Gran Prix racing is still somewhat new to District 16. It consist of two longer motos... scored like a motocross. Often

MX fast guy Seth Doeberlein was able to pull the first holeshot of the day, but he quickly relinquished the lead to Tylor Skodras. Jacob Jesko #505 with the holeshot in the second wave was followed by Jordan Nielson with the B class holeshot. If the start was any indication, it looked like a bunch of the moto guys who showed up to race were going to give the woods guys a run for their money. but it was definitely a true test to see where they stood on the fitness level. Skodras would be your top overall rider on the day going 1-1 in the AA class. Doeberlein was fast in moto one scoring second but in moto two he gave up that spot to Rob’s Performance backed Taylor Strauss, who went 3-2 for second overall. Mason Persha was solid both motos going 4-4 to beat Frank Caballero who went to fifth both motos. After the race I chatted with our overall winner to ask his moto thoughts on a GP style race and Skodras said he would smile every lap when he came back to the moto track from the woods section, but that he liked the entire course. Of course

he said the moto was much rougher in the second set and that fitness definitely played a factor. A class had sixteen riders entered and it was Austin Kenefick who benefitted with the rider inconsistencies. He went 3-1 to take the overall. William Menzel ran in the top five both motos and his 53 scores gave him second. Local veteran Tony Montgomery used the steady method and his 4-4 scores gave him the bronze medal. Broc Graif and Luke Paddrutt rounded out the top five. B class also had sixteen entries and Jordan Nielsen was on fire in moto one and looked real solid. However, in moto two he ran into problems and had to pull off
the track leaving the door wide open. Nick Jacobson didn’t let the opportunity pass him by. He won the second moto and went 2-1 giving him the overall to beat Jeremy Noreen. Ian Beal swapped motos with Noreen and finished third. Brock Noreen had a good run in moto two, getting second and with his sixth earlier he finished fourth overall just ahead of Pat Mullarkey. C class was the biggest class of the day with thirty entries. Getting the start was a huge help in securing a good finish in this class. Local rider Ben Parmeter has a bunch of laps at the famed Dyracuse track and he was a front runner all day. The star of the class was a first time rider to the C class and big bikes for that matter, as Drake Dionne found his way to the front both motos and ended up winning the class on his YZ125. Parmeter used his experience to stay out of trouble and took the runner-up spot with his 3-3 finishes. Noah Dalsing went 2-5 for third ahead of Jake Hunger (6-4). John Meyer rounded out the top five. Knocking on the door of the top five was Autumn Czappa who is really starting to find some speed against the boys. Overall, the numbers were up from last year’s event and everyone I talked to had a great time. I believe that this event has some big potential to be huge, especially the day before the annual mx race. If you missed it, you’ll have another chance later this season in September when the club wraps up the season they kicked off so well. his past weekend Byron Motosports Park hosted the Loretta Lynn’s qualifier for the North Central Area, one of the last chances at getting through to the regionals. It was a great event running over two days and the heat was not only unseasonable, but right near one hundred with the humidity. The crew did a great job of keeping things moving right along with very little stopping of the action to keep water on the track which would be the biggest task with the heat and no cloud cover. Even with all the heat issues there were some great ruts out there and plenty of lines to keep the racing exciting. To touch on some of the larger classes out there this weekend there was a lot of local riders gaining their admission into the regionals which will be starting by the time you read this. Mikah Carpenter was ready to race this weekend, lining up for his last year in 51cc 7-8 as well on to the bigger bikes in 65cc 7-9. He had a great day on Saturday going out there to win

Connor Burger had a great race lined up taking third in the first moto. He was on a great ride in the second moto only to go down before the finish line and not finish. After the racing was Mazon, IL’s Jaden Pogliano 4-3 in the Women’s done a lot of local riders went class for third overall.
Indiana’s Trey Gibson #738 gets the holeshot in the 125C class. The class was small with only eleven entries, but they represented eight states.
The A class had a great turn out this weekend with some fast riders really putting the pressure on for those top spots. Ezra Hastings out of Indiana came out on top in 250A pushing hard in his second moto taking the win. On Sunday Hastings came back wanting it in Open Pro Sport. He had great first moto taking second place, in the second moto he had some bike problems and ended the day having to pull off the track. Another local rider Nick Inman had a great ride in Open Pro Sport battling the much higher temperatures. Inman was off to good start keeping it in fourth for the first moto, in the second moto he had a bad start coming out in dead last. He charged ahead, keeping his head down and riding his race to get up into second before the checkers for an impressive second overall. 85cc 9-12 ran on Sunday with twentyone riders lining up for a chance at those top spots. The highlight of the day was James Clough out of Elko Minnesota coming out on fire to take the win in the first moto with a large gap on the field. In the second moto he had a repeat per-

formance looking very fast. He earned the overall with Zayden Mason making the trip from Indiana to grab second in both motos. Many other local riders had success today as well with Talon Zollers (IL) Pete Parenti (IL) and Aiden Mcfarland (IA) all getting through. It was an extremely successful event for the crew out at Motosports Park this weekend with riders spending Friday through Sunday out at the facilities. Things are really starting to grow around the track with new activities being worked on along with the already implemented fun for everyone on site. You can cer-
tainly see how much work goes into hosting an event like this and everything went as smooth as ever. The track crew was working tirelessly all weekend to keep things going smooth and try to get everyone out of the heat. Congratulations on a job well done! Have you ever seen a rider and you just say to yourself, "He has IT"? What do they have? Perfect style, speed and skill above others. One such kid is Kawasaki rider Edger Lewis. A normal kid from
incoln Trail Motorsports hosted round three of the Fly Showdown series. The track crew did a great job keeping the track watered and safe. With the first two races fighting the threat of snow this was a huge change with temps close to 90. One thing everyone won this weekend was a free sunburn. It was also Mother’s Day weekend. Saturday night LTM set off the celebration of all moms with a stacyc bike and strider race for all young ones. They also hosted wine tasting for the moms and for those needing more excitement a mom’s pit bike race that was crazy, crazy fun that is. With all of the special events the true meaning was a thank you to every mom, grandma, wife, girlfriend and sister who has supported and cheered for anyone at the track. Most of all thanks to those who ride and race. One class made to please mothers (and everyone else) is the Owen Motorsports PW 50 class. Yamaha rider Andrew Hayhurst finished third with Ethan Hampton fourth. Fifth went to KTM rider Cole Ponton. Special mention goes the rider in sixth - Danni "WeEli" Troup. A regular in the Women’s class, this was her first Supermini race on her new Kawasaki KX100. In the second moto Lewis jumped to the front and again ran off to the moto win ahead of Toal, who was looking good as well. The battle was for third between Hampton and Hayhurst and this moto Hampton took the spot. Ponton finished fifth for the moto and overall. The 50 classes are some of the biggest of the Fly series. Not 50cc, but the +50 age group class has huge numbers this year. In +50B Thompsons Motorsports KTM rider Brad Adams put in strong rides to take both motos. Honda rider Joe Patton didn’t get a very good start in the first moto but charged his way into second with a pass on Dan Hall. In the second moto Adams again took the win as Patton worked to second. Hall and his KTM finished third for the moto and overall. In the 50cc classes there were lots of little dudes and dudettes looking to make their moms happy. In 50 Open the riders
were four wide through the whoops on the first lap. When things settled down out Cobra rider Corbin Durbin had the lead and wouldn’t give it up. Cobra rider Tom Luberda finished second with KTM mounted Matt Alshouse third. In the second moto all fifteen riders made it to the line ready to race. When the gate dropped #10 Luberda took the moto win that was also good for the overall. Durbin pushed his Cobra across the line in second. Alshouse finished third. In the 50 Pee Wee class KTM rider Lincoln Paxton took the first moto win. Reid East was second with Honda rider Connor Borah third. In the second moto Honda rider Izabella Kalauber took the moto win, which was outstanding, but her seventh in the first moto gave her fourth overall. KTM rider Reid East finished second in the moto, giving him the overall. Paxton finished third for second overall as Honda rider Connor Borah finished fourth in the moto. Dakota Baker grabbed the holeshot and went on to take the moto win. Jonah Turpin finished second with Gauge Case third. In the second moto Jaxson Schiller liked the first spot and took the win and with his fourth place first moto finish gave him second overall. Baker took second in the moto giving him first overall for the day. Case again finished third for the moto and overall. In 85cc Open Yamaha rider Conner Thompson, Suzuki rider Ethan Burns and Kawasaki rider Keegan Jerrell had things in the class as easy as 1-2-3 in both motos. The Open B class was full of great racing. In the first moto the story was KTM rider Larry Davis Jr who took the win with Yamaha rider Eddie Norred second and Kawasaki rider Eric Watling third. The best ride of the moto came from Yamaha rider Joshua Franklin who found himself pinned to the ground after going down in the first lap. After he got free he put his head down to charge through the
pack and grab sixth place in the superfast class. In the second moto Yamaha rider Dillon Cantrell took the moto win and his fourth place finish in the first moto gave him third overall. Norred finished second for the moto and then ran off with the overall. Davis finished third in the moto and second overall. Franklin had another good ride finishing fifth. Flat Out Friday... in LaCrosse La Crosse, Wisconsin - April 20 By Gordon Lunde
T
he Flat Out Friday crew took their show on the road last week, leaving the hometown of Milwaukee to bring indoor motorcycle races to La Crosse, WI. A concrete floor and Dr. Pepper soda syrup are all that’s needed to put their show in front of excited fans. And what a show they put on! Flat trackers, minibikes, hooligans, vintage, BMX stunters, and even a few monocycles were in attendance to wow the crowd. As the seats filled with fans, the action on track got underway with practice, heat races and eventually the final events to determine who were the best of the best this night. The track surface took a while to set up but once a good layer of rubber was put down the action got hotter and faster. Terry Vestahl said his first few laps on his Hooligan class H-D were eye opening as there was so little traction on the inside of the track. Conditions improved as the night went on, the layer of rubber building with each and every heat race. By the time the finals came, it all looked good for some serious, but fun racing. The main events started with the Brakeless class which was simply dominated by Brian Martens on his Ducati. Warren Heir and Larry Pettis swapped places behind Martens, but couldn’t make headway on the leader. In the end, Heir took the runner-up spot over Pettis. Larry Pettis came out of retirement to do this event. After building race bikes and helping others racers for the last 30+ years, Larry put the leathers back on and came out to finish an outstanding third place! The 100cc main event was Andy Fenwick all the way. Getting the all important holeshot, Fenwick stuck his Kawasaki out front in turn one and never heeded the position. battled hard for the runner-up spot with Prebe holding off the attacks to take second. Brady Lange rode his Honda to the win in the Amateur final by getting out front through turn one and never looking back. Cody Funk and Dave Kilkenny battled hard for second place. Kilkenny ran in the #2 spot until the last lap, then lost it to Funk.

Jung in hot pursuit. As it turned out, a little too hot as Jung crashed out of the event handing the victory to Cox. The Vintage race is always good with these racers putting the old bikes through their paces. JJ Flairty jumped into the lead from the start with Terry Verstal, Jeremy DeRuyter, Steve Kasten and Scott Fittshur giving chase. Several bikes tangled in turn three and after the mess cleared, Vestal was out of the running. Flairty took the checkers with DeRuyter in the runner-up spot. Boonie bikes are one of the crowd favorites as these little machines blast around the track with all 5-8 horsepower pushing them along. Stock old school minis alongside custom built creations of all forms. Robert Peterson got out front at the start with JJ Flairty and Dave Kilkenny giving chase. About lap three, Flairty crashed and broke the handle bars off his machine. As the field scrambled to get through the crash, Kilkenny took over the lead.

B
erm Benders Raceway welcomed racers back for their first 2018 Civil Series event with a previous race having been canceled due to a late spring blizzard and it’s affects. Riders and their crews anxiously headed through the front gate eager to see all their moto friends and family. As usual the Caswells had everything well prepared giving special attention to a track that had not seen any precipitation since the blizzard. With great care, some much needed Friday night rain and several truckloads of water the track was “mint” for practice and racing. A huge turnout guaranteed great racing for that Sunday's race. Despite a busy day of racing extra attention was given to the higher number of 50cc 4- 8 Open class competitors. The gates were nearly packed with beginners, excited parents and some seasoned racers who prepped their gates with tiny boots and then traded big fist bumps. The gate dropped and a swarm of little bikes battled each other to the first corner. #184 Wyatt Niedfeldt took the holeshot. Within the first lap he was passed by Becken Maas followed by Lincoln Nielsen and then 128 Beau
Noaeill. Maas pulled away from the pack as Niedfeldt was overtaken by Nielsen. The moto finished with Maas, Nielsen and Niedfeldt filling the top three spots. Moto two was plagued with crashes off the start. As crews rushed to assist the little rippers, most got up and back on their bikes. Nielsen however, made it through

unscathed to claim the lead followed by Noaeill and Jameson Olson. Niedfeldt following in fourth passed Olson and set off after Noaeill in second. Noaeill held them off as the leader Nielsen went down and fell back. Noaeill led for a while as Nielsen worked his way back to pass Olson and then Niedfeldt, then eventually
past Noaeill to take back the lead. The moto finished with Nielsen in the lead as Niedfeldt slid by Noaeill. The 1/2 century or older the +50 class race was one of the most anticipated of the day, these old guys put on a good show! With the support of their families, some even their grandchildren, they prepped their gates. Elbows up and youthful vigor engaged they charged through the gates as the green light marked the start. Mark Deal was the fastest to the corner but he lost the lead quickly to Chris Maras as Randall Ross held third. After a bad start Jamie Slocum was working up, and soon into fourth. In the third lap with a jubilant cheer from his wife Slocum passed Deal to take second. The moto finished Maras, Slocum, Deal. Moto two had Marass get the holeshot just ahead of Kirk Vesterstein and Steve Sutton with an impressive start. Slocum was looking for his opportunity and then overtook Ross to grab third as Slocum slid back. The moto ended with Maras taking another win for a clean sweep of the class. Slocum’s 2-3 was good for second overall ahead of Vesterstein (4-2) as Deal finished fifth. With trophies and great stories the fifties and the fifties left the track with smiles from ear to ear. Eager to share their victories and struggles with everyone at work or on the playground. Whether you are young or old the stories sound the same and they are made here, along with memories that last a lifetime, at Berm Benders Raceway. Friday, continued from page 21 The Women’s race was a barn burner! Megan Funk, Zaria Martens and Anne Wyman flew around the track, slipping and sliding their way through a great race which Funk controlled from lap one. The racing was close with Martens looking to make a move anytime, but the laps ran out on her as Funk took the win. Jake Mataya, hot off his win at the War of the Twins race in Minneapolis was here to prove he was the man to beat. The talent pool was deep for this race with Parker Lange, Morgen Mischler, Kyle Weise, Trey and Christian Johnson all ready to give Mataya a run for the money. Mataya squeezed out front through turn two with Lange, and Weise hounding him. A crash scrambled the field and a red flag stopped the race with three bikes down in turn one. On the restart, Mataya grabbed the holeshot again, Lange ran second and Morgen Mischler third. With only a few laps remaining, it didn’t leave time for anyone to make a move and the order remained 24

the same to the checkered flag. After his let down in the Vintage event Terry Vestal was out to make up for it in the Hooligan Final. Strong runner Benny Carlson, who won this race in Milwaukee, got the lead out of turn one with Jamie Beckett and Vestal in tow. Vestal went to the front shortly after with Carlson and Louie Lauters in tow. Lots of bar banging and near crashes shuffled the standings each lap. Vestal finally got out front for good and held on to the win ahead of Lauters and Carlson . The final event of the evening was the Goofball class and yes, it was goofy. This class is a run what ya brung class just for fun… or is it? Most of the riders make it a lot of fun wearing costumes and decorating their bikes in various themes or styles not normally seen on a race track. With all the weirdness going on its hard to tell it’s a race but, in the end it was Patrick Zeigle with the “victory” over Tavis Frier. To add more fun in the evening, a demonstration was put on by the divi-
sionbmx group, doing jumps and flips on their BMX bikes. JJ Flairty joined in with them on a little Honda doing back flips. There was also a group of monowheels riders. The single wheel machines brought out lots of cheers from the crowd. Flat Out Friday continues to grow its following and spread the show across the country. The next event is in Cleveland. now leading a three-way battle as Max Earley and Ruger Brown closed in. Last lap action had Earley nip Dossett in the sand-wash to grab third and Brown also getting by to set up the top five, Boaz leading to the flag.
osh Boaz surged to dominance in three classes at the season opener for the Spring Creek Motocross Park. His six moto wins topped the day as the best performance of the weekend. This race counts as the second race of the Spring Creek Super Series for 2018 and there was an abundance of strong competition with around 700 entries. The track was in prime condition for the day and temperatures in the low 80’s were perhaps a bit much for so early in the season. It’s hard to imagine that just a few weeks previous there was a major snow storm. Boaz roosted down the start straight to grab the lead in the first Schoolboy 2 moto with Brandon Dossett in tow. Boaz began to edge away from the pack while Cameron Skaalerud was pressuring Dossett hard by the end of lap one and soon slipped by on the next lap. Skaalerud had a good pace going and pulled a gap with Dossett Justin Rumpca put the hurt on the Vet B class. 26

Moto two action featured Boaz again jumping out to the early lead. Skaalerud settled into second, having a good moto to take second with Earley closing somewhat on the last lap and grabbing third. Dossett crossed the line in fourth with Casey Paider and Brown close behind. The 14-24C class featured Colton Exner roosting into the lead early on with Alexander Ives and Ian Miller providing pressure. Exner managed to pull out a bit of a lead while the other two had a closer tussle. Concluding the race, Exner managed to hold on for the win by about a second ahead of Ives with Miller right there as well. Cody Clough and Isaac Moyle snapped up fourth and fifth. Ives was on a mission in moto two and after grabbing the early lead went on for the win. Moyle held second for a couple of laps with Trevor Bonnicksen coming up to displace him at around the halfway point of the moto. Ives ended up taking the checkers with Bonnicksen and Moyle just a bit back. Exner moved up to fourth on the last lap and Miller displaced Andrew Clark for fifth.
Jayden Clough came out strong in the 85cc 12-15 class and motored off to double wins. Clough looks to be a force in the class all year. Trevin Nelson grabbed second in moto one with a good ride but Jesse Jacobsen stepped up in moto two to take second which was good for second overall. Brandon Nelson snared third just ahead of Trevin for moto two while Luke Geis secured fifth in both motos. In some 14-24A class action, Tanner Taylor pulled a holeshot in the first moto with Bryce Backaus on his tail. Backaus soon took charge with Austin Kienast also getting by Taylor on lap one. Backaus built a good 6 or 7 second lead over Kienast by the checkered. Phil Maus took third with Kaleb DeKeyrel fourth over Chase Becker. Kienast led through turn one in the second moto with Backaus ready to attack going into the second lap, but then Backaus had a bobble and dropped back into the pack. Kienast went in for the win with Maus pretty close at the flag. DeKeyrel was another three seconds back for third with Becker crossing the line in fourth. T
his year the District 16/17 challenge was moved to the first event weekend at Fox Valley Off-Road. Gran Prix racing is starting to get it’s own following and this Saturday event was the third of the D17 season and second in D16. This elevated the competition level greatly and as the day wore on riders
started to show who has been training. It was great seeing the 85cc/ Supermini class have twenty riders. Connor Pilon was the kid to beat. He put in a solid performance with the Doerr boys both taking shots to try to get a win, but Regan hit something breaking his pipe. Reece Doerr kept Pilon honest in moto two. The story in this class was Ashton Lyons, Landon Lee, and Jake Mueller. Lyons broke his leg two years ago and took last
year to rebuild his confidence. Today he ran solid top five and showed he belonged there. Landon Lee, actually started to use his speed on the course and not in the pits! Seriously, Lee put in a good ride as he and Lyons traded places all day. Jake Mueller is likely the dark horse in this story. Not many know he’s a two year rider, he started indoors a couple of winters ago and has progressed to contending with riders in this large class

who have riden since they were young. Gran Prix racing is a form of a blend of off road and motocross racing. Motos are generally 20-25 minutes long. Trees, natural terrain, motocross obstacles and grass track sprinkled in. The mix makes for interesting interaction between all different types of racers. Why this is important to remind readers in this story is because stamina is key to doing well. Most anyone can push a 8-10 minute moto, but doubling that and then doing it all up to four times (2 classes) often leaves riders looking for help peeling the fingers off the bars. The A class had seventeen riders. The age difference in this class is astounding. 49 years young Chuck Garetson lines up with the likes of Tanner Whipple and Garrett Ward, both only seventeen. Sprinkle in the normal suspects of Blake Ryan, last years A class GP 17 champion, four year A class champion Travis Ward, Ryan Moss, the 40's something perpetual off-road teacher and multi-champion. Then accomplished D16 riders Dylan Narel, JD Friebel, Pete Laubmeier, Heath Drone and more and it is bound to be a fast and fun race. Dead engine start first moto does favor the woods riders a little bit, specially if they have the magic
button. Blake Ryan and Colt Converse charged into the first turn with Ryan Moss and Joe Voegtle (straight out of B class) leading the group into the first woods section. Mired in mid pack is Garrett and Travis Ward with the home field advantage, starting to move forward. Friebel and Whipple were back further in the field as well. The A class motos were five laps. As the riders got to the moto track the younger Ward passed Moss and set his sites on Voegtle. Ryan and Converse were starting to pull away. Garrett Ward passed into third. Friebel started to get his updated settings figured out and moved up to seventh with Moss and Travis Ward keeping just far enough ahead to beat his drive to the checkers. Second moto had the younger Ward line up way outside and when the group hit the first turn he swept around the corner 10mph faster than the others for a holeshot and his confidence level was running high. Converse and Ryan dropped in behind with Dylan Narel launching his Honda into the top five as well. Ward set the pace and by the end of the second lap he had a sizeable lead. When the shuffle was done, Ward went 3-1, Converse 2-2 and Ryan 1-3. This
season looks to be wide open for all the talent that is in the mix. The B class saw two moto and two woods kids duke it out as Eli Otterbach and Thor Rick both have strong woods backgrounds were running heads up with Dylan Boyd and Stuart Schwagerman who have started riding Gp's last season. Boyd found himself a bush on the start of the second moto. All tangled up he tugs and pulls to finally get the bike free. Thor got the better of Otterbach in moto one, then tables turned in the second moto with Otterbach getting the holeshot and putting in a solid ride holding off Thor. Stuart was running third and knew Boyd was coming. They are friends and travel together. Boyd ran out of time and if memory serves me it's the first time at a GP that Stuart him. That likely was a good conversation for the ride home... Today's GP had over a third of the riders being in the Vet and Senior classes. Nineteen total +40 riders, +30 classes twenty, and +50 came in at thirteen. In the +50B/C class Jeff Oldenburg grabbed the holeshot both motos and went on to win. Daniel Kickbusch pushed a little to hard and ended up crashing but gathered it back up to put himself on the box in second. Tim Halsmer, Pete Witkowski, and Mike Dean filled out the top five. Brody Brewer in his first ever GP (65cc class) took advantage of a miscue by Walker Garetson in moto one to take the overall. Many of these 65cc riders never see hills with natural terrain, so a rain rut or a tree root can give them a little trouble. Sunday’s Hare Scramble. The course from the GP was used again with three more sections added to it. Sunday is still cloudy and twenty degrees cooler then on Saturday, but riding conditions were excellent once again. First up was the youth classes; Super Mini, 85cc, 65cc and Women’s class. The one hour long race heads off to the west side which hasn't been ridden on yet this weekend. Twisty trails and black sandy dirt that is likely one of the best timber soils around was waiting to be churned up. Supermini winner Ashton Lyons and runner up Zack Jensen likely have hundreds of hours of riding time learning how to miss trees and climb hills. Jacob Lesny has been seen a time CYCLE USA, June 2018

or two doing the same thing. They rounded out the top three with Billy Weirup and Logan Anderson completing the top five. The 85cc class with it's seventeen riders again made the first turn a little interesting, but thankfully no one hit the dirt! It was the Doerr twins day today. One is faster in the woods and one is faster on the moto track. They both are doing much better keeping their feet on the pegs this year and it showed today. Regan

Doerr pulled the "holey" and checked out. Winning by 2.20 minutes, brother Reece Doerr didn’t have such a great start and came through the barrels in sixth place. One lap one rider at a time Reece moved towards the front. As the end of the race neared he moved into second and held on for the rest of the time. If these two get out together we all will stand back and watch the entertainment. Riley Roberts had a tough day on Saturday but redeemed himself with a podium finish and friend/ competitor Ayden Wright hung in there for 4th. Old people and newbie's are mixed in what we call the morning big bike race. +60 to Little C class start off on a 1.5 hour race. +50A class takes off first. Greg Gourley pulled a holeshot and Jeff Kallemeyn was keeping his Husky close early in the race. Tim Farrell and Kenny Otterbach were shuffling around in the pack after bad starts. Tim's was last in fact as he was either taking a nap on the line or distracted by a hard starting ride. Otterbach put in solid laps all race long but the large number of
riders in the morning race made passing an art form. As the race continued Farrell settled into a good pace and passed up to behind Otterbach. At the checkered flag these old fast people were just seconds apart. Farrell gets the hard charger award for this race giving up at least thirty seconds on the start. Nice ride! Afternoon is big bike race time. Everyone pretty much knows today when that Cody Barnes kid shows up it will be hard to find the top rung on the ladder as he usually is squarely positioned there. Colten Zuidema isn't intimidated and for the first couple of laps paced Barnes. The Old man in this race was Ryan Moss and for the early laps he held onto third as Travis Ward, Tanner Whipple and JD Friebel were working their way up. Ward and Whipple were less then three seconds apart for most of the first 1.5 hours of the hour and 45 minute event. They pushed each other to the point that they had 2030 seconds on Friebel, but JD isn't one to give in and he puts his head down til the checkers every time. We have seen this before, late in the race he is still hitting his marks and hammering. Today was no different, Ward finally shook Whipple and puts a little lead on him. During the last lap he encountered a downed rider at the top of rock creek, with no where to go he waited for the rider to move. Friebel now was bouncing off his rear tire. The rider moves his bike, Ward started to go by and kills it, Friebel took advantage of this and rocketed by on the outside. Luke Kaszyaski won the 30A class by a little over a minute. Kevan Zini did the same over D17 rider Randy Southard in
the 40A class. Miro Tuska had a commanding lead over Brian Smith in the 40B class with Dj Parks taking third for the day. Jeff Oldenburg continued his winning ways in 50B/C. Atv classes were down in numbers but offered up great time racing on the redesigned course for the wider machines. Brett Daehler almost didn't make the start of the race but a patient group they are waited for him to get ready. Had they known he was going to win that start may have been on time! Bobby Caybay won the C class and Carter Holder won the 300 class, biding his time til he can climb on the big machine... then look out. Lastly but not least. We couldn't write this story and not mention Mark Spizzirri. We all know him a "spizz". He bought an ALTA last summer. He has been riding it off and on for a while now. Well he holeshotted the +40A class by a country mile. If the bike had lasted the 1.45 minutes it would be headlines, but as it was 1.20 into the race it coasted to a stop and sat against a tree. Hopefully a solar powered helmet, or a cordless charging process will get that ride to the checkers... It was a great weekend of racing. Fox Valley Off Road thanks all the riders who came out this weekend, particularly the District 16 riders who travel a long distance to compete with all the D17 riders here on this special weekend. ay 20th had Muddy Waters Motocross underway for their second race this season. The track out here is always going through revisions and the property getting cleared out more and more each time I come out. Everything is looking great right now with more races on the calendar this year, they are really ramping things up and the show is running very smooth! All the races went off like clockwork today and the track was in amazing shape. There were some great battles and new rivalries forming as the day went on. The sun even came out later in the day and everyone I spoke with really enjoyed the track and facilities. As mentioned, there were some great battles today at the track has lots of room for passing - you really need to protect your lines. Coming out of the gate swinging in the first moto was +40A and Roy Nafzger got out front with Joe Buskirk and Jack Taylor on the chase. Taylor put it up into second shortly while
first turn, giving Daniel Mormino the Buskirk found an inside line to get sideholeshot with Jackson and Rakowski by-side with Nafzger up the hill. Keepright behind. Coming back up the hill a ing it close Buskirk was able to get a rider went down collecting Jackson and drive up the rollers and take over the lead. Meanwhile Harry Freidman was on the charge taking over third from Taylor who wasn’t going down that easy. The two were going back and forth when Nafzger went down, letting them by as Taylor moved back into second at the same time. They came across the line with Buskirk taking the win, Taylor in second, and Freidman third. In the second moto Buskirk held out for the win once again. Nafzger fought back this moto to finish second and third overall, with Taylor finishing third, but bumping up to second overall after a couple good rides. Open C was the biggest turn-out today with twenty riders lining up for action. In the first moto Luke Jackson took the win followed by Austin Cobb and Joey Rakowski. The gate dropped for moto two Hunter Billingsly and Conner Burger after a with a mad dash to get up to the good day at the races.

Rakowski, shaking up the front with Cobb now in the lead. Soon after Jacob Marquette was fighting in second and Mormino now back to third. Coming around for the second lap Cobb was pulling away as Benjamin Atkins had fought up to second with Marquette third and Mormino right behind. They went back and forth for third several times as Mormino finally got around over the triple to take the position. Coming across the line it was Cobb, Atkins, and Mormino. The overall went to Cobb (2-1), Atkins in second (42) then Mormino (5-3). There was some great battles in the 85 Sr class today as well. In their first moto the top three were Talan Zollers, Joey Promenschenkel, and David Frawley. They got off the line in the afternoon for their second moto with Promenschenkel grabbing the lead as Zollers and Frawley were hot on his trail. Coming up the hill Zollers took the inside deep and got up front for the lead with Promenschenkel battling back hard. The two went back and forth as Promenschenkel took over the lead for a lap, then Zollers hunted him back down taking over once again. All the while Frawley was riding smooth and keeping the pace, hoping for a chance to move up. After some great racing the flag flew giving Zollers the win and the overall. Promenschenkel took second as Frawley stayed close in third. It was such a great day for racing today; with a little bit of rain the day before and cloud cover in the morning the track was perfect. All the riders were on their A game with so many good races today, giving all the spectators a treat. The layout of the property makes viewing almost the entire track possible, along with all the natural elevation changes that make it such a fun track to ride. There’s several more races planned for the summer so be sure to make a trip out!

he proverb always seems to come up in conversations about the spring time in Wisconsin. It rang so true this year as an epic snowstorm hit Central Wisconsin just two weeks before a week before this year’s motocross race. jeopardy. A decision was made a few days before the event to run it as things changed quickly leading up to the race. The Rapids Angels Motorcycle Club have decades of experience getting the famous Dyracuse Recreational Facility ready for race day. New this year, the club held a GP event the day before the mx so rider numbers were up compared to previous years for both the GP and the MX race on Sunday.
Sunday morning riders woke up to 25 degree weather which made for a pretty frosty practice. An example of the added challenge this brings, you have a 125cc two stroke and in the morning it’s 25 degrees in deep power robbing sands, and later in the day it will be 65, tuning is a chore so she doesn’t blow up. Speaking of two strokes, District 16 added a new points paying class called 125cc Open in hopes to get newer riders, riders on a budget or all those just looking to have fun. The class is open to all 125cc bikes no matter how old, the riders can be from twelve years old all the way up, and can be an A, B or C rider. I thought I would give this class a try for a couple reasons. I want to see the sport have more riders and I also get the opportunity to race my son and his friends, even though I’m three times their age. Also, who doesn’t love wringing out a 125cc two stroke motorcycle. I guess I’m just a big kid at heart. The good news was 125 Open was the first class to line up. With fourteen riders lined up for moto one and I picked an outside gate so I could get a good Birdseye view of the youngsters tearing it up. From the view I had, I could see a couple Yamahas ahead of me on the start and it looked like Haiden Waelchli with the holeshot. After lap one, I thought I might settle into a nice steady pace, but forgot that on a 125cc on the Dyracuse circuit there’s no such thing. I was pretty excited to be on the track for the first moto because I was thinking that the track was the smoothest it would be all day. As things shook out, it was Waelchli with moto one win, Andy Bowman second, Joe Haasl third, Cody Wills fourth and Josh Bowman rounding out the top five. I had a good moto making a pass or two late in the moto and grabbing sixth place. Moto two again it was the Waelchli show out front leading the way. Josh Bowman didn’t like the fact his father

beat him in moto one so he was on the gas even harder this time. Wills who got the bug to buy a used Yamaha YZ125 for cheap and run in this class was a strong third. It had been over ten years since Wills raced a 125 competitively and I think he surprised himself. Which means, you can buy a cheap two stroke, fix it up and go race competitively. I have a feeling that this class will be a good addition to the Dist. 16 program. 250B was next up and it was local rider Nick Randrup who pulled the holeshot in
moto one. He quickly realized that he would have his hands full with Logan Cipala from Ellsworth. Lap two had Cipala in the lead followed by Randrup, Joe Gomez, Nick Jacobson and Matthew St John. Cipala had a good pace going which allowed him and Randrup to pull away from the pack. At the checkers it was Cipala, Randrup, Jacobson, Gomez and Clayton Vonmoos. I like that fact, that we had a hill climber, a couple mx riders, a flat tracker and a woods rider all running up front.
Moto two, Cipala was again quick to get out front. Vonmoos had a great moto and put his Yamaha in second at the checkers ahead of Randrup. St John and Gomez rounded out the top five. 250C was the biggest class of the day with thirty-one entries. By 10am it was hard to believe that with over two feet of snow just weeks earlier, that with 31 bikes on the gate, dust was going to be an issue off the start. Zak Graham made the long trip from Mazomanie, WI to try and put his KTM on the top step of the podium and he did just that. Moto one was his followed by Kendall Biever, Luke Vanlyssel, Ben Parmeter and Kevin Gollubske. Moto two saw Tristin Woolf with the holeshot followed by Graham as these two set out front early and tried to take command of the class. Coming out of the woods section in the bowl sweeper it looked like it might be a side by side dual up the first uphill but Woolf had a little luck, handing the lead to Graham. Biever inherited second and that gave him second overall. Kyle Kohls had a good run in moto two finishing third, with his seventh in moto one he grabbed fifth overall. Vanlyssel took fourth for third overall and Parmeter finished fourth overall.

Two Stroke B/C class at Dyracuse showed that a good running bike can really help. Being on a 250 vs a 125 in the deep sand can be another big advantage. The Nick Show as I called it, had Nick Randrup and Nick Jacobson both out front on their 250’s. The battle between these two was super intense. At the checkers it was Jacobson with the moto win over Randrup who had a small bobble on the last lap. Tristin Woolf on his new KTM 250 put in a solid ride for third followed by Kyle Kohls. Joe Haasl was the first rider to cross the line on a 125. In moto two, it again was the Nick show out front. The battle these two displayed was worth the price of admission. At the checkers, Randrup came out victorious winning the overall as second went to Jacobson. Kohls took third in the moto and overall after Woolf had bike problems on the back section of the track. Haasl and Jake Hunger rounded out the top five. Schoolboy had interesting results for the day. Moto one saw Josh Bowman and Aiden McCormick running 1-2 with Hunger running third. Carter Kauffmann from Lacrosse was fourth as Cole Torp rounded out the top five. Waelchli had problems in moto one finishing 9th but came back to win moto two. Hunger had a super ride and finished second and his 3-2 scores gave him the overall. Kauffmann finished third in the moto also giving him third overall. Bowman had a rough moto and settled for sixth. It was a fantastic weekend as evident

T
he 2018 motocross season was suppose to start at the Aztalan Cycle Club’s grounds in Lake Mills back in April - but mother nature had other plans. As we came into the proceeding week for this Mother’s day event, more rain and cold arrived, again. The club saw an opening in the rain come Sunday and decided to make this event happen. The rain Saturday night left plenty of water around the facility, but the day went on. With some added help from the track crew, everything kept getting better and better. By mid day, the track was really good and racing weather made for a great event. A lot of hard work by the club paid off for everyone who made the trip... as it often does. 14-24B/C was one of the first classes of the day and right out of the first turn, KTM 150cc rider DJ Gritzmacher took control. Ian Malinowski used his 450cc Honda to stay close early in the opening lap as Parker Lange took over third. With the shortened motos Gritzmacher stretched out a couple bike length lead early in the second lap and then just rode smart for the win. Caleb Brockman was in the mix early before falling back as John Meyer and Dalton Pergande filled out the top five on the final lap. Dirt Track regular Parker Lange used
the muddy conditions as his introduction to motocross, doing really well despite the conditions. Lange after the moto, “The track was really muddy and rutted, coming from flat track I really didn’t know how to ride on this. I was hoping for dry and slick but I had a lot of fun. This is my first moto ever. I wanted to get more riding in and this is a great way to get more experience on the bike. I had
a blast for sure.” In the second moto, it was a repeat out front as the same three riders fell into position right out of the first turn. Pergande locked down fourth as Spencer Janaky turned in a good ride for fifth ahead of Tyler Lee. After finishing in fourth, Meyer had to settle for seventh in this moto, but it was still good for fifth overall behind Pergande.

Schoolboy 1 delivered an action filled race that would be replicated a couple times before the day was done. Brandon Martyniak and Elijah Tetzlaff both had their game face on as they took off out front on their Yamaha 125’s. Martyniak stretched a small lead early only to have Tetzlaff close most of the gap as they came to the checkered flag. They held those spots while turning impressive lap times in the still soft conditions. Aidan Mccormick put in a solid ride for third. Tyler Jensen chased Cody Gamble hard for two laps before Gamble ran into problems on the last lap, dropping the position and a bunch of time as Jensen finished fourth. Tetzlaff took the lead in moto two with Martyniak immediately on his rear fender. The two were still glued together as they began the second lap. When they returned from the backside Martyniak was out front, where he stayed to the end. Jensen was back in another battle, trying

to hold onto third place. He put up quite the fight before settling into fifth after Mccormick and Spencer Hein pressed past. Martyniak after locking down the win, “I didn’t get the best start but managed a pass by the second lap for the win. It is still pretty soft out there but getting really good. Open A rider Brandon Marescalco (453) took advantage of a little extra water in the parking lot to clean his bike... the idea caught on with another six or seven riders. They all had smiles on their faces while doing it!
Rock River/ Fly/ Jessie Williams backed Tetzlaff after the close moto, “I got the start but just wasn’t putting in the laps I needed to and Brandon got around me. I stuck to him after that and it was a good race. I really like the new and bigger bike, it fits me really well.” He also wanted to thank his dad and uncle JJ. These two returned in the 125cc class to put on one of the best two moto races of the day. Tetzlaff got the first moto win, then led all the way into the final lap of moto two before Martyniak snuck past. There’s something really cool about fast kids pounding the track on 125cc two strokes - and these two delivered it in every moto they rode. Azzie club members led the way in the +40A class in both motos. Brian McCanna got the jump on everyone at the start in moto one with Frank Weiss eating his roost through the opening lap. With Marc Ottenad running third ahead of Tom Ferguson, Aztalan members had some quality representation. During lap two Weiss used his mud riding skills to take the lead and send some of the muddy roost back to McCanna. This set the final order for the A rider as Myles Saigh held on for the +40B win ahead of Jim Beckman and Brad Yde in the combined start. Conditions had improved a lot by the second moto. other one of his patented holeshots he had to be smiling. Weiss stayed close for half of the opening lap, but McCanna was motivated... maybe it was a new white jersey he wanted to keep clean or something, but this moto was all his. He took the win and overall ahead of Weiss and Ottenad. Saigh repeated his winning performance in +40B/C, this time ahead of Yde who got the best of Beckman for second place. Thomas Brunt rode to perfect 4-4 scores for fourth overall ahead of Steve Lubahn. Open C had twenty-one riders come off the gate for the first moto... all knowing this would be a perfect time for a great start. After getting his bike pretty clean following practice, Blain Youngthunder timed the gate perfectly and led everyone onto the track. In his shadow was Tyrell Williams and Austin Beilke. These three stayed close right to the end and in the same order. Mukwonago, WI’s Kollin Kadinger grabbed the fourth place position in the first lap and stayed there as Jake Robinson fought for fifth. He held off an early push from Hayden Zurn, but then gave up the spot when Judea Youngthunder worked his way up on the last lap. Williams, Zurn and Beilke had their opportunity in the second moto as Blain Youngthunder was stuck back in sixth off
the start. Youngthunder quickly made it to fifth, then passed Kadinger for fourth. Youngthunder, “The track shaped up really nice for these second motos, so that really helped. I had a decent start this time but still had to work up. I made a few passes around the track and then the last one (for the win) over the spectator tabletop where I was able to beat him into the corner. You really had to pound the ruts and have enough tear-offs to get through it.” Blain Youngthunder took the win after that final pass on Williams. Beilke went 3-3 for third overall ahead of Judea Youngthunder’s 5-5. Zurn finished a solid fourth (8-4) for fifth overall behind Kadinger (46). The +50 class had another impressive twenty entries, all of them knowing Frank Weiss was already on
a roll after seeing him ride in +40A. Thomas Brunt and Kevin Yde made it interesting early in the first lap, then Wiess took over the lead through the barn section jumps and never looked back. Brunt slipped back to mid pack as Yde held solid in second ahead of Gary Behrens and Delavan, WI’s Mike Boyden who climbed his way into fourth during the final lap. Glen Korn finished fifth on his Yamaha. The second moto saw Weiss get to the front after powering around Yde in the first lap. Those two then pulled away from the rest. Behrens wrapped up third again while Korn used a good start and solid laps to better Boyden for fourth in the moto and overall. Early in the season like this, it’s always cool seeing the young riders who have moved up in the mini class ranks. Riding with an older group, or now on a bigger bike, how they handle the transition is always impressive. In 85cc 9-13 Brock Nowicki really twisted the throttle on his KTM in an effort to get away from Kawasaki mounted Riley Busse in the first lap. He pulled a
few bike lengths as they fought the deeper ruts heading to the back section, but then Busse charged up and made a pass going into the sand. Nowicki quickly retook the lead and from there never gave it up. Busse held to his rear fender all the way as the two gapped the rest of the class. Paytyn Dosch held a lonely third as the eventual battle for fourth place fell back a ways. After three laps of trading position, Jacob Maney finally got the best of Ryder Johnson at just the right time for fourth at the finish line. Nowicki took the lead early in moto two... and looked to be on his way to the overall. Late in the moto and out of site, he ran into problems and Busse was right there to capitalize as he grabbed the win and day’s overall. Paytyn Dosch won a moto long battle with Johnson over third place as Tanner Rossi made a statement by finishing fifth after a first moto dnf. The 65cc 7-11 class seemed to have 80% of the class sporting their Sportland2 graphics... enough so that it really stood out even if you weren’t looking for it. Riley Busse simply strong-armed all the youngsters, stealing the lead spot off the start and vanishing out front. Ryder Skodras did a great job holding down second place as Benjamin Blazek worked into third ahead of Jayden and Jayce Wolf. Brad Ottenad proudly broke up the Kawasaki freight train on his Husqvarna, finishing sixth in the fourteen rider class. The class once again had to watch Busse ride off for another win in moto two. This time he had to make sure to ride his best as Blazek and Skodras kept him in sight and honest right to the end. Jayden Wolf, Ottenad and Jayce Wolf filled out the next spots ahead of Hunter Morse (7-7) and Jordan Godeck (8-8). Jamison Duclos looked good in the 250A class. Taking the early lead while Seth Doeberlein and Jacob Jesko worked up to second and third, Duclos extended a several second lead. Doeberlein closed it up some as they started the last lap but Duclos still looked to be in control. We didn’t see what happened, but it all changed in the final portion of the track as Doeberlein finished with the win, just ahead of Duclos. Right off the gate in moto two Duclos
jumped out front. This time he never let Doeberlein get close enough to have a chance at the win or class overall. The same two went at in the Open A class, with Doeberlein going 1-1 for the overall ahead of Duclos (2-2) and Brandon Marescalco (3-4). 250B saw Dj Gritmacher return to sweep both moto wins. The Pewaukee native was out front right away and while kept honest, never really threatened once on pace. In the first moto Logan Rusk ran in second before Brock Noreen fought his way ahead. Also advancing a bunch after a mid pack start, Ian Malinowski forced his way into a fourth place finish behind Rusk - after passing Kristopher Korn and Nicholas Czechowicz on
the last lap. Gritzmacher ran off in the second moto as well. This time Noreen and Malinowski gated in second and third and stayed close all moto to fill out the podium. Rusk used a pass on the third lap to grab fourth ahead of Czechowicz. SE Sales/ Fly, Gaerne/ Spy backed Gritzmacher after yet another fantastic moto, “The day went pretty good. It started out a little muddy but quickly became really awesome and got better all day. I went out and rode some solid motos and did my own thing and the day went really well. I’ve been working hard and I’m just enjoying being a kid living out a dream.”

Kittock masters the day Millville, Minnesota - May 13 By Rolfe Otternesss
L
ogan Kittock attacked the hills and dips of the Spring Creek Park facility with a forceful charge to take the overall victory at the Millville round of District 23’s Hare Scrambles series. His command of the terrain brought him in to the finish with over a two minutes advantage over local-guy, Rochester’s Luke Wilder. The trails that snaked around the local topography were in fine shape for the event despite plenty of precipitation during the previous week. Overcast skies through the morning kept temperatures down to the 60’s with the sun coming out a bit later in the day. There were 350 entries including the youth classes, so you just knew there would be plenty of good close racing. Different layouts kept the C and Youth classes on terrain challenges more to their liking with the A and B classes running through the tough stuff. The Youth classes ran over by the Mini track and had a fairly tame course that utilized some of the mini track and surrounding woodsy grounds. A good battle developed in the Micro class over the

lead positions as Carter Niedzielski and Tatum Swygman went at it mightily for most of the forty-five minute race, flinging their little KTMs around the course with mega enthusiasm. Swygman biffed
it after a hard charge through the whoops near the end of the race and Niedzielski was able to cruise it in for the win. Swygman recovered for second and they were the only two to complete fourteen laps. Landen Maclaughlin and Connor Sutherland rounded out the top four and were separated by only a couple of seconds at the flag. The C class had a race clocked off at one hour. Top C rider and winner in the 250C class was Jason Ryan. He navigated the course quick enough to get five laps in and was over forty seconds ahead of the second place rider in his class, Walter Crum. Jacob Stephas was first in Open C class and second overall, taking only ten more seconds than Ryan to complete five tough laps. Evan Sheff was quickest of the B class competitors, win-
ning Open B and topping the winner in 250B class by a minute twenty seconds as they completed four laps on the longer A/B course. Top A class rider, competing in the 250A class, was Robert Lane IV who ran a strong pace and ended up with a 10th overall for the day (including AA riders). Jarrett Loegering grabbed second in 250A and overall A standings. An impressive ride was put in by Jeremy Schmidt to win the overall in Senior A and place third overall in the A class. Pretty good for an elderly chap! The aforementioned Logan Kittock grabbed the lead as the AA riders left the line in the afternoon race. Part way through the first lap he got hung up on a rocky uphill climb and Luke Wilder took over out front. Kittock charged back, caught and passed Wilder on the next lap. After that Kittock held solidly on to the lead. After the race he mentioned that as the trail rutted up a bit he found he could corner with more confidence. This had to help as he went in to take the win with a decent lead over Wilder. Chaz Herzog took third and was apparently in good shape as he set the fastest time on the last lap and closed to within ten seconds of Wilder by the end. Fourth and fifth went to Tyler Pogreba and Craig Holasek. Kevin Plzak was eighth, last of the riders that managed to get in five laps on the grueling course. Results:

pril 14th started off the 2018 District 17 Hillclimb season in Neoga, IL at Thunder Ridge Motorcycle Club. This race was also the opener for the AMA Eastern Hillclimb Challenge, a new race series covering six states in 2018. The club worked the weeks before getting the hill and grounds ready. Late Friday night the rains came through and lasted until mid-morning making conditions less than ideal. Still, there were 127 entries that came to make the challenge with riders from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and West Virginia. The 50cc class started the event off. Quentin Dilley, from Illinois stopped the clock on the 375-foot hill in 20.40 seconds. Kolton Knapp also managed to make the top with a time of 21.63 seconds. Logan Miller, on a Polini, climbed 281 feet for third, Kasen Jenner, Trenton Ballinger, Jace McKay and Wyatt Noyes rounded off the top seven. The 65cc class had Devin Miller in first with a fine 16.294 time and Nick Krueger a close second with a time of 16.595. Tristan Miller stopped the clock at 18.881 seconds for third. The 85Jr class was won by Drew Miller. In the 85Sr, Dominic Sanders was first in 13.25 seconds. The 125 class saw Shelby Shafer from Illinois take the top spot with 13.115 seconds, ahead of Nathan Prins and Drew Miller. Brock Riffe made the drive up from Kentucky to take the win in the

200cc class with a fast 10.67 time. Andrew Fortner was second after breaking the light at 10.93. Levi Peters won the 250cc class with a nice 10.21 ride as Brock Riffe claimed second with a 10.58. Andrew Fortner took 3rd with a very close time of 11.01 seconds. Christopher Chartier made the long drive from Massachusetts to set the fast time of the day and take the win in the 450cc class with a high flying 9.48 seconds ride. He was the only rider to clear and successfully land the 70 foot gap between the tabletop jump and the step up before the wall! Levi Peters took second with a 10.04 as Kyle Thomas stopped the clocks for third with a 10.30. Jared McKay placed fouth. McKay was also the winner of the 4 stroke class with a good 10.25 seconds time. Thistle on top at New Ulm New Ulm, Minnesota - May 19 By Tim McBride
T
he Flying Dutchman Motorcycle Club played host to the first outdoor District 23 flat track double header at their club grounds on the outskirts of New Ulm MN. A pair of racing veterans from two different disciplines turned in strong performances. Long time flat track racer Randy Thistle made the trek from his northern hometown of Bemidji, Minnesota and proved he was the man to beat by winning three divisions, and Quad racing veteran Daryl Rath was virtually unbeatable throughout the weekend. The weather was perfect for racing and camping as competitors settled in for the weekend. 145 entries on Saturday and 166 on Sunday proved that flat track racing on the local level is alive and well. Thistle was a man on a mission Saturday and topped the Super Single, Master 50 Plus and 600 Vintage classes, but ran into mechanical problems in Sunday. “A great job by the Flying Dutchman,” Thistle explained. “The weather held up for a great track on Saturday. I ran three classes and for the first time in all my years I won all three mains! I was on my way to winning the Senior class on Sunday when my clutch basket broke.” #44 Randy Thistle won three classes on Saturday.

Fast weekend at Tigerton Tigerton Wisconsin - May 8 By Doug Forstner, photos by Kaila Forstner
F
antasy Moto hosted a Loretta Lynn Qualifier in Tigerton, WI which meant tons of fast motocross racers invading Central Wisconsin. The crew has changed up the Tigerton complex. The big change was the new starting area with a left hander that takes you into the rhythm section heading up to the domain jump. The start seemed to be able to spread the gate out and starts came from inside middle and outside. Once you got around the first and second corner, you found yourself running up to a dirt wall. For the most part, it was to slow the riders down because after the wall, was three single jumps. However, at some point during the weekend, some of the faster riders found a way to jump
the wall and either land after the first or the second jump. Again it’s the little things that separate the riders. A couple other sections had changes as well and it seemed to make the track flow better. On top of that, Sunday’s race was also a District 16 points event and the Ronnie Iverson Memorial Race. Ryder Hanninen made the trip from Minnesota to race the Open Pro Sport class. He was pretty fast both motos beating the likes of Blake Hansen who went 2-3 for second. Chad Johnson dusted off his boots and put together a couple good motos going 5-2 for third overall. Colton Karl and Jake Vaness rounded out the top five. 65cc 7-11 had twenty little rippers trying to tame the track. Brody Barth was the rider to beat as he went 1-1. Deegan Vanvreede tried to keep Barth honest but

Barth was too much in the end and Vanvreede had to settle for second. Battles ensued behind them as Seth Perdue and Logan Kresel swapped positions with Kresel getting the nod going 4-3 over the 3-4 of Perdue. Riley Busse made the trek north to round out the top five with his 65 moto scores. Probably one of the best battles on the day happened in Schoolboy as Wyatt Liebeck and DJ Gritzmacher ran away with the show. Moto one Gritzmacher showed a bunch of moxie and held his own to win over Liebeck. In moto two Liebeck turned the roles and got the win. Elijah Tetzlaff had battles of his own with Jordan Biese as they swapped moto scores, with Tetzlaff ending up third overall. Bailey Otis took his 7-5 scores to a top five finish. +25B/C class had some interesting ac-
tion as well. Michael West was on fire in moto on taking the win ahead of Nick Kubowski and Josh Tammi. Logan Poupore and Mike Fiorentino rounded out the top five. As motos wore on line selection became key. Bigger holes started to develop in sections and ruts were starting to get pretty deep. Finding the fast way around was crucial later in the day. Moto two, West found himself battling in the pack. Paul Harding who took eighth in the first moto got a good start and took the moto win. Tammi was consistent and his 3-2 scores 65cc 7-11’s Kyler Gollubske keeping gave him the overall. loose with dad before the moto. I overheard a couple of them talking when the +30 class was on the track about the guy who was out front on an enduro bike with electrical tape for numbers. They found it near impossible that something like this could happen. Little did they know they were watching multiple time Champ Chad Johnson from little ole Rhinelander WI. He silently had a career professionally that many only dream of. After finding Chad in the pits, the best part to the story was, his bike is street legal and the front fork was leaking so bad his front brakes didn’t work all while mopping up the Vet class. For sure, he had the biggest smile on his face all day, just a day at the track enjoying what he does with his family. D17/16 Trials at Jeff’s Place Oregon, Illinois - May 5-6 By Kevin Huber
T
he weekend of May 5th and 6th was the annual Trials event held at Jeff Franklin’s place in Oregon, Illinois. This is a shared event for the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association (WOTA) and the Northern Illinois Trials Riders Organization (NITRO). Many of us were ready to ride after the long winter and the weather was great. The many hours of work setting up sections in the woods by several of our clubs’ riders resulted in a fantastic event. Several new areas were used and those that were used in past were modified enough that they had some completely different challenges. This being a joint event, there was a large turnout as sixty-four riders that hit the woods both days. The biggest growth came from the Youth class. There were seven youngsters that rode Pre-Youth last year that moved up to Youth. Instead of small sections in the pits they were now riding the same sections in the woods as the rest of us big kids. Kevan Ingold was the only return youth rider and his experience helped him to take first place both days. The largest class was Intermediate. This class had sixteen riders trying for the

top spot. On Saturday there was a tie in the for first place. Eugene Judge and Kyle Hach ended the day with the same score. The normal tie breaker is to count the number of “0” scored sections, then if tied go to the number of “1”, then “2” and so on. In case you don’t know, those are the only section scores possible in trials, where the lower the score the better. They ended up having the same number of each score so there needed to be a rideoff. Since they had both loaded their bikes by this time the ride-off was delayed until Sunday morning. A section was picked where they both rode the more difficult advanced line. Eugene was able to top Kyle to take first place. There was also a tie in the Expert class Saturday, but Pat Doll was able to top Ryan Rivenburgh by having more “0” scores. Just to show how tight the competition was the
only riders to win both days were Eugene Judge in Intermediate, Tyler Ingold in Novice and Kevan Ingold in Youth. It should be an exciting year in Trials.
