CYCLE USA, March 2015

All District Riders: Renew your memberships as soon as you get the opportunity to do so. The Cycle USA magazine is one of your special membership benefits, and only renewed 2015 members will continue to get issues after the first few come out. Also, if you change your address, notify your district association right away. Dist. 17 Hare-Scrambles By Jay Hall, your ‘15 Director I would like to thank you for a great 2014 season, and for coming to the Banquet in January. I hope everyone had a good time. The season will be here in a few weeks with Keithsburg on the 22 of March. Its been a long cold winter and we all are ready to get out and ride. Speaking of the first ride do you have your Dist.17 card yet? Beat the lines the day of the race get your card before the season and make sure you’re getting points for all the races. Speaking of races, we have a few new tracks to hit this year, one being Roselawn, IN. It is on the boarder, just the other side of Kankakee and south of Chicago. Some of us have been racing the Enduro there for years, I’ve been racing there since 1975, yes I’m that old guys. It’s a sand track, and is in a nudist colony, so I’m letting everyone know this in advance in case you may have a problem with that. Now it’s not like they are all walking out where we pit, but ‘back in the woods’ there might be a resident or two, and I don’t want anyone to get shocked. We have two rounds there, one in April and August with two different clubs putting them on. The first is WFO and the second will be by the Hill and Gully club. The second one will be an closed course Enduro that makes laps, and will pay HS points. Its a chance for you to try this style of racing. We did add a few more races this year and it’s still the best of fifteen races, with seven bonus points rounds. Now to shift gears a little I’m also your off-road AMA congressmen for D-17, and I would like to get the word out how important it is to join both AMA and D-17. We’re the ones who help with the rule making for your races, and help fight for your rights and look out for them. As a group we are strong. You can think all these groups want is money, but that far from being true. Numbers count and without that others will run all over us!

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... Land is getting harder to find and to use, and without help it may become even harder yet. And our clubs need help. I see the same guys, and I mean old guys, sorry guys doing so much. We need new members in these clubs if our sport is to keep going for the future and our kids. So see what you can do for your local or maybe not so local club, we all need help. And by the way D17 pays worker points for helping clubs with the race too! Well I wish you all a great 2015!! Keep the rubber down and the roost flying... I’ll see you at the races, and then hopefully at the banquet in January 2016. Jay Hall D-17 H-S Director From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman We are entering a new season and have some exciting changes coming up for 2015. At the district level our motocross series has a few changes. The last two weekends of the season (Sept 19 & 20, Sept 26 & 27) will be two day events with a three moto format. The scoring for these two events only will be by moto instead of a single score for an averaged finished. This will encourage all the racers that are looking to take the title in their class to race against their competition. We have always battled the issue of racers not having to go against each other. This will hopefully alleviate a lot of that problem. It will be almost impossible to win a class without attending these events. There will be a max of 75 points available to any racer that can will all three motos, but by scoring per moto if you have a bad moto it won’t take you out of the running. We will be counting 50% of the events held for scoring and qualifying for awards at season-end. If we have no rain outs that means fourteen events will be counted for the titles. Each of the Featured Events (2 day 3 moto season end races) will count as one event but will have more points available. You can go into these events with twelve races and they will take you to the required fourteen races to qualify for year-end awards, and class titles. As always, one can race more events to have a better chance of winning a title. These events have contingency attached to them, one of them will be a Pro-Am. The promoters have come together and drawn up plans to make these events

really special. Stay tuned for more as the season progresses. There is a rotation schedule set up so these events will rotate from track to track, trying to keep it to one north and one south each season. Some of the new rules that came out of congress that I expect to be ratified by the board of AMA include keeping points in combined classes. Starting with this year combined classes such as a B/C class, the riders will be sorted by level at the AMA and their results will be used for advancement in the RPV system. There were a few changes made to the advancement chart in terms of the number of participants in each category and the points chart itself, please check the AMA site for the updated numbers. Racers that have two years in the C class will not be advanced to B unless they have an RPV of 13 or higher. The old RPV was 11. The AMA appeal board will have the ability to reevaluate and overturn an advancement/ classification appeal within six months of the appeal. This means that if someone wins an appeal to not get advanced but then dominates the results they may be advanced based on those results during the season. Changes to the yellow flag: Yellow flag means CAUTION, competitors must ride cautiously until they have passed the incident that caused the yellow flag. When displayed there is no passing or gaining an advantage and jumps must be ROLLED between the flag

and the incident that caused the flag. Failure to do so may result in loss of positions or a disqualification. Red Cross Flag: Indicates that ambulances, safety vehicles, or emergency personnel may be on the course. Competitors must show extreme caution, slow down, maintain position, not gain an advantage, wheels must not leave the ground between the flag and incident. Failure to do so may result in loss of positions or a disqualification. Clear definition of DNF vs DNS. Any racer that completes fewer than half the laps of the winner or didn’t take the checkered flag will be a DNF. They will receive points equaling the number of riders in the class or a minimum of 20 points for that moto. DNS will be any rider that does not COMPLETE at least one lap. A DNS will get 30 points plus the number of riders in the class. Hillclimb has a new look to their rulebook, please refer to the AMA site for any changes at that level. Off-Road, the biggest change involves Enduro scoring for the type of event it is. At the district level we have added a Supermini class to Hillclimb discipline. ATV motocross had many class changes as they have been cut back some in an attempt to refocus the completion in the ranks. Other changes from the meeting will equal out the distribution of year end awards.

In Enduro only there will be Lightweight A/ B/ C will consist of 0-250 four stroke and 0200 two strokes no minicycles. Heavy-weight A/B/C Four strokes 251cc and over 2 strokes 201cc and over. Off Road has added a plus 70 class, it will be called the Golden Master class. Off Road awards will be handed out on finish position only, riders will not be moved up to fill in for overall A/B/C. Motocross changes include allowing Pro License holders that have not earned any National points to compete for district points. Should they score any National Pro points they will immediately become ineligible for district points or awards. District 23 racers will have to use the correct riding number and background colors or face defined penalties. When borrowing a bike they must fill out a borrowed bike form. This has gotten rather lengthy but I think I’ve covered all the major changes, refer to the AMA website and the ARMCA website for the latest rulebook editions. See you on the tracks & trails of MN. Excellent Start on Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake, Indiana - January 11 By Carey Monroe Photos by www.DiffySmooth.com

S

ome of the only people who look forward to freezing weather in the motorcycle industry are those who participate in ice racing on Cedar Lake in the far northwestern corner of Indiana. The Moto On Ice crew led by AMA hall of famer Jeff Fredette has been promoting races for seven years. The crew puts on a short track oval and a 2 ½ mile road course every Sunday beginning in January and continuing until the ice gives out. The first race of the 2015 season brought out some of the finest ice racers in the area to compete on the smooth track laid out by Fredette and his crew. The sun was shining bright and it was a crisp twenty degrees with a strong northerly wind. The event pulled a large group of local quad riders with rubber tires, as well as a faithful group of northern Indiana side hacks, mini bikes who are just trying it out for the first time, as well as a group of fast midwest riders. The event started out with the oval racing in the Open class where Morgan Monroe from Cedar Lake got the holeshot and led the first lap until she was passed up by veteran rider Tim Farrell on his CRF450. Farrell managed to hold off

Monroe for the heat race win. Next up came the first heat of Mini oval bikes with new riders Sophia Lewis and Olivia Lewis of Lowell, as well as second year racer Caden Brannon on his new KX65. Sophia Lewis gave Brannon a run for his money the first two laps but he was able to pass her and put some distance on the field coming to the checkers. Father/ Daughter team Josh and Neveah Govert from Cedar Lake put on quite a show for the spectators on their rubber tire quads, with Dad finishing first and daughter fourth. Side hacks always put on a fun show

for the spectators with Father/ Son competitors Bill and Jared Bean from Mishawaka racing alongside Jim Graves for the heat race win. The Road course is set up to run two thirty minute motos during the event, separating out those bikes and riders who are fit for the long haul. Fredette proved once again that he’s a force to be reckoned with by taking the money class win, followed by Mitch Lewis of Lowell taking the Open road course win. After an intermission and the chance to warm up in the South Shore Golf Course club house the crew was back at it for the main events. Morgan Monroe took to the ice with a look of determination not to let Farrell beat her this time. The green flag waved and Monroe managed the holeshot leading the first lap with Farrell charging hard from the outside. Going in to turn two of the second lap Farrell got caught up in some lap traffic and slid out, giving Monroe the advantage over the field and the Open class win. The main event in the Mini class was almost a carbon copy of the heat race with Sophia Lewis getting the holeshot and leading the first two laps only to be passed by Caden Brannon on the 65 for the win. The Rubber tire (non-studded) Quad class proved to be a scoring nightmare with quads spinning and tires spinning throughout the whole race. Josh Govert managed the win and his

daughter Nevaeh came in eighth this time after spinning around a full circle in turn two. The Road course took its toll on machinery and riders in the main event with nineteen bikes starting and only eleven taking the checkers. The road course is fun for the spectators and fans to watch because all classes are combined out on the track. Fredette and Lewis (although in separate classes) battled for track position during the entire

thirty minute race with Fredette going down on the second to last lap and still taking the win and money home. Lewis took the win in Open and local rider Ricky Piskoty took the win in the 250 division. Moto on Ice will be running every Sunday from here till spring, and then looking forward to winter returning next year. Check them out on Facebook at MotoonIce for updates.

2014 Motocross champions

District 23 Motocross Awards Red Wing, Minnesota - January 17 By Mike Quinn

T

reasure Island Resort and Casino was the site of this year’s Motocross Awards Ceremony. For the Minnesota MX racers that put a full season together, this was their special night. It was held on January 17th starting with a social hour at Five PM and continuing through the evening. Over 300 people were on hand to either receive their hard earned awards, or cheer on

their family members and friends. We counted the racers best fourteen finishes out of a possible twenty-eight events during the 2014 season. Due to limited seating at the facility, new for this year was a no walk in policy. The ceremony filled the facility, and we had several vendors on hand to display their goods along with several of our promoters. We had many sponsors that helped with our season, but our first thank you

Many of the D23 Board members came out to enjoy and help make the evening special for the riders and their families.

has to go out to Fly Racing as they awarded our riders $12,000 in Fly products this year. As a district we can’t thank Fly enough for all of their support. We are happy to announce Fly will be back with us again this season with the same level of support. Other sponsors anted up many prizes for all of our award winners and all of the district members that were present. Everything from Pro National Race packages to riding schools, to racing gear and supplies. Caswell Cycle out of Mora MN donated eleven full riding outfits for some very lucky racers. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes awarded a week long riding school package to one of our lucky members. Congrats go out to Ryan Mosch, we know he will make the most of the opportunity. Two hundred and thirty awards were presented to the finalists in fifty-four classes including our Quad MX’ers. All award recipients chose a prize to go along with the award. Our championship class Champions were also awarded a Championship Jacket produced by CA Apparel. The Kadlecs of CYCLE USA, March 2015

CYCLE USA, March 2015

2015 will be the first year that we will officially provide class winner apparel for all of our motocross class winners. Several racers were multi class champions. Vincent Harens 50cc, Avery

Long 65cc, Josh Boaz 85cc, Mark Arends +25 & +30A, Clay Olson 14-24 & Open A, Austin Keinast & Brady Miska all took wins in two classes. Long time (as in almost 30 years of racing) racer Jack

Parenteau was on hand to pick up his awards in three classes, +45, +50 and +55. Congrats to all of you for the hard work and dedication you put into your season. The event ran smoothly and finished up a little after 9PM, leaving the racers and children plenty of time to take advantage of the many activities offered at Treasure Island. It was a successful evening and a special thanks goes out to Owen Reiss for all the work he put in to

bring this event together. It has been my honor to emcee our year-end awards ceremony for the past sixteen years. It is one of the highlights of the year for me. Thanks to all those that helped with the awards presentation, and to all of our sponsors. It is important that you younger racers take the time to give your parents a special thanks for all the time, effort and money they put into your racing. Without them it wouldn’t be possible. It is also important to support the sponsors that have been so generous in providing the tons of goodies that were handed out. Spend your money with the local shops that support you, not with the big online outfits just looking to make a quick buck. As of now next year’s gala will be held at the Mermaid in Plymouth, MN, moving North a Sharon Kadlec (R), promoter at the Motocity and Little Falls tracks, few miles from this at her display. The Kadlecs are big sponsors of our banquet.

year’s venue. Start planning and training now for a bigger and better 2015 season. I hope to see all you at our tracks this season, going for class wins.

Owen Riess is our Recognition Chairperson, he organizes the entire event which is a massive job. Once again, he did a great job of pulling everything together!

Wet & Wild Steelshoe 3 Hour

The starting line fills with an impressive number of bikes

Cambellsport, Wisconsin - January 18 By Dave Hollub

M

any of the motorcycle ice racers in the Midwest look forward to the annual Steelshoe Three Hour Endurance event, and this year being the 19th running it was great seeing a record 102 bikes (218 riders) entered into race. A result of housebound boredom or the fantastic week of weather leading up to race day was debatable, but

CYCLE USA, March 2015

bottom line there was a fantastic turnout of riders, and spectators. It surely also had a lot to do with the overall popularity of this special race. All week the temperature stayed Jesko Racing (58) around the 20 working to hold off Rob’s Performance in lightweight degree mark, then on Saturday a warmup hit and by the time Jeff Fredette finished plowing another of his outstanding courses the temperature was into the mid 40’s. Saturday night the temperature dropped but not quite far enough to turn everything back into solid ice. Sunday morning there were soft spots on the surface, but with 8 to 10 inches of base ice the race was on. In this event, the bikes go out in waves based on what class they are riding, putting all the bikes on the course at the same time. This way they compete for their class win, and for the overall, against all the teams entered for the day. It makes for a very action filled three hours of racing! At noon the first wave to get the green flag was the Lightweight bikes and team Young

Guns (Max Mayer/ Sonny Johnson/Tim Fisher) got the jump with Jesko racing and then Lemon Pie Productions (John Sterwart/ Marc Ottenad) following around the first corner. As the first lap was scored Jesko Racing (Chad Jesko/ Jacob Jesko) was out front but the Rob’s Performance bike ridden by Tyler Smulders was closing in fast. John Stewart aboard the Lemon Pie bike was third and The Young Guns were in fourth. Rob’s and Lemon Pie got past Jesko on lap four and a battle started as they fought for the win. By the time the first hour was up Rob’s (Ed Smulders/ Tyler Sulders) was still out front, running third overall. Lemon Pie was in second (6th OA) and Jesko was holding onto third (14th). At the end of hour two Rob’s was still in the lead but Lemon Pie had finished the last two laps right on their rear fender. Enginerd Motorsports (Malachi Roth/ Danny Bilansky) was running third (29th). One lap into the final hour Lemon Pie slipped into the lead and then held on to the checkers with Rob’s finishing one bike back. The second start wave was the Middleweight bikes with Frozen Assets (Andrew Jensen/ David Lieck) out front and Moose Racing Keytime (John Strangefeld/ Luke Fox) and Retriever

Racing (Patrick Ryder/Parker Lange) bar to bar right behind in the first corner. As lap one went into the books the Michigan Hail Razors (9th OA) were out front with Parker Lange aboard the Retriever Racing bike in second (11th) and Team Hahn (Terry Hahn/ Jared Hahn) in third a couple bikes back. The Retriever bike was on the move and on lap two took over first while Hahn moved into second and then Team MeJo (Kaley Johnson/ Nichole Mees) in third. When the second hour started Retriever was still out front with second place Ice Chippers (Jim Beckman/ Jeff Wick) five bikes back. Team MeJo was right on Ice Chippers back wheel and then one bike behind the four way battle for fourth going on between Slipknot (Jim Younger / Jeff Moore), Frozen Assets, Woodstock KTM (Ryan Ironman Jason Larson hoping to keep his feet dry. for Parker to get back on and ride the final hour the way we knew he could. It couldn’t have worked any better as he gave me a cushion when I got out there and then pushed to the finish when he was back on the back. The course was laid out fantastic, but the ice deteriorated as the race went on and some areas were getting sketchy with slush and standing water. Thanks to our sponsors Retriever Racing, Sunset Bar, Moose Racing, Bell Helmets, and Millennium Motorsports.” Team Johnson (Kyle Johnson/ John Olmstead) was out front when the heavyweights got their start with Beaver Cycle Club #1 (Eric Mischler/Dan Mischler) in second and 328 Powersports (Jacob Wiedmeyer/ Garret Loehrer) battling West Bend Harley Squared (Benny Carlson/ Jeremy DeRuyter/ Jake Mataya) for third. Team Johnson took advantage of their horsepower edge and fought through most of the light and middle-weight bikes to finish lap one in fourth overall. Harada Racing (Craig Pickett/ Westley Westesson) was just two bikes behind and then the Beaver Cycle Club bike rounded off the top three. Harada moved into both the class lead and overall on lap two. As hour two

began Harada was out front, team Johnson in second (2nd OA), Beaver Cycle in third (5th) and 328 Powersports fourth (7th). As the third leg of the race started Beaver Cycle had moved into second with Team Johnson holding third ahead of 328 Powersports. Team Johnson made a move on lap 11 taking over second but Beaver Cycle stayed right on their rear wheel to the checkers. The top three crossed 3/4/5 overall for the closest racing of the day. Ironman class brings out a special group as they battle for three hours with no rest, and today was looking to be very exciting as there were several top riders ready to meet the challenge. Lance Wollin (Sunset Tavern) was out front of the Ironman class at the start but Jesse Janisch (West Bend Harley 32) and JR Schnabel (Action Powersports) were right behind. While Wollin never looked back out front all day, he never was clear of challenges from the other Ironmen. One lap into the race Wollin had passed seventy-one bikes that started ahead of Ironman, crossing the scoring area thirteenth overall. Schnabel was running

second (17th), Janisch in third (23rd) and Fredette fourth (31st). Wollin held onto the lead as he made his way through the other riders with the next three Ironmen keeping close. By the finish of hour one Wollin was up to fourth overall. Back in eighth overall an Ironman train was chasing him in the running order of Janisch, Schnabel, and Fredette, as they were bar to bar in many corners. Just before the completion of two hours Wollin made his final pass to grab the overall lead as well but now Schnabel was in third overall. Wollin held onto the lead in hour three and took the checkers for both the Ironman and the overall win with Schnabel right behind. Brutal Day In Fremont

Christian Johnson flew to two Pro class wins at Sunday’s official CWIRA season kick-off.

Fremont, Wisconsin - January 4

T

he Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association opened their 2015 ice racing season via a double-header in Fremont Wisconsin. Saturday was a warm-up for Sunday’s points paying event, and a good opportunity to shake everything out after a long off season. Saturday was a bit chilly, but nice. Sunday was down right brutal. It did get up to about nine degrees, but the stiff wind pushed wind chills way below zero. After practice the riders were asked if they wanted to cut it down to one moto. The great majority quickly raised their hands to vote for a full race day. They had come to race, and wanted as much track time as possible. A flip side of the cold was the area had seen very little snow, and the ice was extremely hard and clean. This made for some of the best traction seen in a long time. Lap times were impressive all day. The high speeds combined with the wind meant snow dust was a problem, so the club ran heats as needed to limit the number of riders on the track at one time. If you weren’t flagging, or exposed all day you were fine. Racers loved the ice, 20

and the races kicked off right on time. As usual, the GP racing kicks off the action at the these events. In the Open Pro/Am bike class, John Strangfeld jumped out front on his Kawasaki, under heavy pressure immediately. On his rear fender, the Johnsons out of Mt Calvery... Trey and Christian. Trey used a good outside - inside move through the early hairpins to take the lead. A lap later Christian slipped into second to set the

final order up front. Ian Malinowski finished fourth ahead of Parker Lange. The second moto had Strangfeld leading off the start again. This time Trey was the first to make a move and then two laps later Christian pulled a really cool outside pass for second. Trey went after Christian, but to no avail and Christian’s 2-1 finishes took the overall win. Tyler Martin owned the Quad Open GP event, winning both motos. Swapping positions behind him, Hunter Schultz came out ahead of Graham Eichmiller for second overall. Christian Johnson continued his winning ways in the Open Pro class. After another tussle with John Strangfeld through the first lap, coming out of turn four Johnson took the lead and went on to the win. Marshfield’s Greg Barth was riding really well in third. Going into the final laps, Trey Johnson hooked up with Barth, and in the final corner got to the inside and beat him to the line by about two feet for third. In the second moto, Strangfeld led once again, with Christian hot on his heals. Into the second lap, Trey Johnson was trying to make a move on Christian and went down hard. He was ok, but forced a restart where he settled into the back of the pack. Strangfeld led the rest of the race until the last lap when Christian Johnson made a move on the

outside stick to steal the win. Malinowski had a great run for third, giving him fourth overall behind Greg Barth (4-5). Later in the day, Trey Johnson turned the tables to beat Christian in the very fast 450 Pro class, taking the win in both motos. It was close though, as the two were scraping plastic through every lap. Speed was definitely on full display when the Quad Open Pro riders hit the ice. The studded machines were simply flying around the perfect course and ice. By the second lap Craig Melville had about a two quad length lead. The battle for second didn’t get resolved until the last lap as Mike Mueller finally found a small edge over Graham Eichmiller and Tyler Martin as Rob Reitz finished a close fifth. Melville was on a mission, and led all the way through moto two making it clear he wanted the top spot on the podium. Tyler Martin had a good start, and used it to step up his game and finish second (4-2) for third overall. Mueller settled for third, but it was still good for second overall in the impressive class. The Pro/Am Rubber (non-studded) quad riders ran in two heat races to set the stage for the final winner takes all moto. Tad Fehrenbach led most of the first heat as Alex Volovsek and Jim Falke gave chase. In the second heat, Ryan Schesel led all the way to the last lap before spinning out, and dropping back. Deven Borski and James Helgeson took over as the checkered flagg came out. In the final, the riders were hooking up

so well you would have thought they were running studded tires. Volovsek grabbed the all important early lead. Carefully picking his lines, Schesel was right on his rear wheel all the way. When the white flag came out, Schesel took his nudged his way to the inside of Volovsek, getting just enough extra momentum down the back straight to hold a lead into the final two turns. Schesel took the win as Borski finished third. In the Open C bike class, Austin Hamburger looked like he was in a class

of his own, running away for the first moto win. Megan Funk had a great start and ran in second until the white flag lap when Mason Barth snuck past for the position. Noah Baehnman finished fourth. In the second moto Hamburger found things a little tougher, starting behind Baehnman. It took two laps, but Hamburger took the lead and eventual win. Baehnman held on to second, even after a big push late from Barth. Barth’s 2-3 results took second overall. One of the closer races of the day came from the leaders in Open B. Sierra Heindl had her Kawasaki wide open as she held off Kenosha, WI’s Rick Rozinski and Yamaha mounted Cody Funk. Rozinski really started testing Heindl in the second lap, and the two were pretty much side by side to the end. Coming out of the final turn Rozinski made a long move on the outside, and beat Heindl to the line by half a tire to win. Funk stayed close all the way. In the second moto Heindl was a little off her earlier pace, as Rozinski led Funk and her through all the laps. Rozinski’s two wins sealed the day’s overall.

Rick Rozinski had to work for the Open B class win. CYCLE USA, March 2015

The Outlaw Rubber class is always one of the crowd favorites. Two heats ran here as well. In the first, Louis Plaskey was out front early before a big slide off the track ended that run. Tad Fehrenbach and Scott Lindner grabbed the top two spots to the end. In heat two, Ryan Schesel led Scott Davis all the way to set up the final with ten riders. When the rubber-band snapped letting the riders drop the hammer for the final, it was Scott Lindner getting the crucial holeshot. With near perfect traction out there, Linder wouldn’t be topped as he led Nick Nett and Ryan Schesel across the finish line. Jim Falke rode well, moving up to finish fourth ahead of Fehrenbach. Mason Barth was back in the Junior Motorcycle (mini) class, taking both moto wins. Brody Lange ran in second through every lap as Loyal Prach and Ethan Ramsey rounded out the top four. It was a cold and tough day, but the 2015 season was now

officially launched. We saw some great racing on near perfect ice, and we all left looking forward to the next event. Exactly what all these die-hard riders have been waiting for since last February. Lindberg was just unstoppable, leading all the way to the finish in moto as well. Lilliberg kept him honest most of the moto, finishing second for second overall (4-2). After a rough first moto, Tyler Seiberlich ran well to hold off Alan Slepica for third. Morinville went 3-5 for fourth overall ahead of Klejeski who couldn’t catch his first moto form, and settled for seventh this time out. As expected, the Open A bike class presented the fastest riders of the day. There were plenty of contenders, but Craig Torgerson made his intentions clear, getting to the front while CJ Wise and Dain Olson fought over second. Casey LaJoie was in the mix early before dropping back. Garrett Almer fought ahead and moved into fourth mid-race with Wade Almer fifth. Regular front runners Neil Pede and Jason Larson struggled, leaving their hopes set on the second moto as Torgerson took the win. Torgerson dropped the hammer at the

start in moto two, and again led the way onto the course. Olson started in second but dropped out mid moto, not finishing. Garrett Almer, Wise and Cole Spinder

settled into the top four and ran there to the end... close enough to keep the spectator’s full attention. Wise’s 2-3 motos were good for second overall.

If you were looking for action, it came for sure in the Quad B 250/450 class. Ryan Garson took the first moto win after a moto long fight with Ben Suter. They swapped positions a couple times early, then again in the last two laps until right

time had some rubbing going on all through the pack. Suter got his revenge in the second moto, pulling the holeshot and leading every lap to the end. It was all he needed for the overall as well. First moto winner Garson started in fourth, and tried really hard to move up, but Anderson wasn’t budging, and held third to the checkered flag, finishing just a couple quad lengths back from Schuh (3-2). The Quad A Open race had a wild battle for the lead as Rich Suter was wide open in an effort to hold off the always fast Brock Zychowski. These two are far from strangers, as their close battles are common, and frequently a crowd favorite. Suter held the lead to the final lap, and Zychowski made a final run at the win coming into the last turn. Zychowski, “I knew we were running really close, so I saved my energy to the end of the race, hoping he would be tired. I tried to get around him on the last lap going into the finish and my inside rear tire caught his and it pitched me out into the snowbank. I had to try.” Zychowski went into the outside snowbank hard, just

feet short of the finish line. He dropped to the back of the pack as he worked to dig the quad out. Suter happily took the win with DJ Keeler and Jon Pascoe third and fourth behind Scott Williams. Zychowski won the battle in the second moto, but it wasn’t enough to keep Suter off the top spot on the podium at day’s end. Suter led off the start, and right away Zychowski started pushing for the lead. Ryan Santikko was making it a great three quad spectacle until he slid out on the second lap. Half a lap later, Zychowski dove to the inside of Suter to make the pass, and go on for the win. His 7-1 was only going to get him so far in the overall, as he settled for third. Suter’s 2-1 took the overall ahead of Williams. Jeremiah Lindberg continued his

winning ways in the Open B 14-29 class, winning both motos. Lindberg, “Things are going really good so far today. I really want a 450, but I’m still on the 250, and out here now against a lot of 450’s. I’m making due for sure. The ice is slippery, but actually good considering the snow coming down. In the second moto, Jordan Klejeski improved on his first moto fifth to finish runner up (third overall). Seiberlich finished third, good for second overall. The Open A 14-29 class had a lot of the same riders that ran in the earlier mentioned A class. Craig Torgerson,

riding a different bike got the holeshot, but hit the ice early on the first lap. Jumping into the lead, Garret Almer was on a roll. He pulled a gap early, and then just extended it to the end. Almer, “It was good out there. The bike worked well and I stayed up. The ice is in good shape, and I just ran my own race” CJ Wise was all over Jared Torgerson, all moto, trying to take over second. Behind them, making it a three-way drag race from corner to corner was Neil Pede on his KTM. Going into the last lap it looked like the three would hold their own. Then Pede simply opened it up on the fast, out back part of the track, going around both Wise and Jared Torgerson as they fought for the inside line against each other.

Pede, “I had a bad start, but knew it was going to be a long moto, and I would have a chance to move up. I rode really close to the guys ahead of me and seen where I might have an opening, and just went for it on the last lap.” The significance of Pede’s second place finish was yet to be seen, but it put him in position to fight for the overall. Pede grabbed the second moto holeshot, finally getting a good start. From there, he was unstoppable. Craig Torgerson ran in second early, but slipped back as Cole Spindler and Almer advanced. (5-2) while Almer’s third place finish gave him second overall. Pede’s first moto passes and this win put him in position for the overall win. At times, the fastest riders use the one moto Dash for Cash to test each other yet again. In the motorcycle dash, Craig Torgerson, Neil Pede and CJ Wise led the group, pushing each other really hard through the opening lap. Torgerson had his hands full, but held on to win the sprint. In the Quad Dash for Cash, Zychowski had Rich Suter pound on him through the opening lap, but as they started lap two, a mechanical issue put an end to the efforts, and Suter dropped to the back. Another fast quad rider, Ryan Santikko took over and finished second. This was a great opener for the series that runs across the northwest part of Wisconsin, with a step over into Minnesota midseason. As the series continues to grow, even more riders are joining in from the nearby Twin Cities, MN area. hile it was not so very long ago that the mx racing season ended in the upper midwest, the moto fraternity was certainly anxious for a chance to climb the podium again, and the Cedar Lake Arena (aka the Sandbox) was serving up the moto mojo, in spades with the opening round of the 2015 Winter Series. The racers (187) and spectators turned out in abundance to witness local hotshoes turning a wheel in anger for the chance to lord their skills over the heads of their closest competitors. The track builders have put together a course that encourages racers to hit their marks. The consequences for coming up short on some of the bigger jumps will definitely get your attention, not to mention losing valuable time during a moto. Timing means a lot in developing fast laps on technical small tracks. Displacement is no substitute for

confidence as evidenced by some of the little ankle-biters on their 65cc rockets busting out some very impressive doubles and triples that older and less resilient old guys on 250’s and 450’s were not willing to go for. One of the first races out of the gate were the 50Sr 7-8 screamin-minis. Cobra mounted #38 Wyatt McGrath positively dropped the hammer to put his stamp on the class. With numerous class championships at various tracks in District 23 as well as top finishes at the Loretta Lynn’s this past year, McGrath is one to bet on in the coming years. Miles Ruth and Nicholas Stefancik had a good battle over second, with Ruth getting the edge in the second moto (3-2) for second overall in the twelve rider

group. In addition to 1-1 victories in the above mentioned class, Mc also went 11 in 50 Open 4-8 racing and pulled a bronze finish in 65cc 7-9. In 65cc 7-9 Cole Godroy topped both motos. Behind him Illinois rider Talon Zollers traded positions with McGrath for second.... Zollers going 3-2 for second overall. Christian Berg was fourth overall after finishing fifth in both motos on his KTM. In the 65cc 7-11 and 10-11 classes, Trevin Nelson seemed to want it the most

The A class races are what we can often refer to as a torrid affair. Drama, and a lot of hot action. It was certainly the case in today’s first round of racing. AMA Pro Motocross and Supercross competitors Joe Perron and Nick Jackson were on hand to provide a great show for the spectators. Other class big guns were Cole Hood, Logan Marzahn, Zack Archer and Conner Cunningham to name a few. In 250A Perron wheeled his Yamaha to the top slot, but neither Hood not Jackson let it become a walk in the park for the winner. While Perron gained the slightest of advantages in moto one, neither Cole Hood or Jackson gave an inch in what could be best described as a bare knuckle bar room brawl. Hood and Jackson dove into the last turn, a wide sweeping 180, tapped out, bar to bar till about the last 50 feet where momentum pushed Jackson wide and into the soft top of the berm, stifling his drive out of the sweeper. Jackson went 4-3 after Marzahn finished third in the first moto. Hood made the math simple with his 2-2 finishes. In the Open A battle, Jackson wicked it up to answer the challenge mounted by Zack Archer with Connor Cunningham in third and Joe Perron in fourth at the end of the first moto. In moto two, the deck was shuffled. Perron got his mojo working for the win with Cunningham nipping at his rear wheel to capture second. Cole Hood would round out the podium with moto1 winner Jackson Wyatt Mcgrath went home with two overalls in his 50cc classes. coming in fourth.

as he finished on top of both classes while Ethan McMahon and Anthony Edgerton would trade podium spots in the two classes making for a KTM clean sweep in both. Nelson won all four motos in the two classes on his KTM. Another young speedster that is sure to make waves in the motocross world is the KTM mounted #51 of Josh Fedder. He isn’t afraid to go big when the occasion calls for it, but he is also seasoned enough to know that you cannot accelerate when your tires aren’t churnin the dirt, so he is developing his scrubbing and whipping skills quite nicely. All the hard work that he puts in shows in his results. Not far behind Fedder in both the 85cc 9-11 and 9-12 contests was KTM Mounted Mason Grecula. Another Josh is garnering his share of gold at the races. Josh Boaz wheeled his #11 KTM to perfect moto finishes in both the 85cc 12-15 and the Supermini 12-16 sprints with the also very fast Yamaha rider Eddie Norred finishing in second and Izaih Clark rounding out the top 3.

Miranda Tweeton going to second in the Women’s class

Overall results were, Perron 4-1 for first, Cunningham 3-2 for second, Jackson 1-4 for bronze. How’s that for close competition. B class racer Austin Kienast must have thought that bad weather was coming, and that he’d better get some added weight in the back of the truck for traction on snowy roads. His plan for weight was to load up on trophies. In 250B he built on his plan after a hard fought battle with Kawasaki mounted Charles Anderson behind and Justin Peterson on his Honda. Logan Cipala was hot in the first moto finishing second, only to not start moto two. Kienast also topped the 15-29B class, ahead of Matt Mraz and Danielle West. The only area where his plan fell short was in Open B where Yamaha mounted Chase Becker interrupted his shot at a sweep. Becker took both moto wins on his Yamaha while Kienast went 3-2 for second, having swapped positions with

Spring Creek’s 2014 Banquet

O

nce again Spring Creek Motocross Park’s awards ceremonies and banquet for the Super Series returned to the fabulous facilities at Treasure Island Casino. This is a great venue with good food and plenty of seating for all in attendance. John and Greta Martin had apparently been working feverishly on this event, based on all the time it must have taken to prepare everything, and the night went over well with the crowd. The velvety voice of Guy Ohland, master of ceremonies, once again graced the loudspeakers as he presented the program and kept things moving along well. Some special awards were presented along with all the series points plaques and goodies. First up was an award for perfect attendance. Almost thirty riders managed to make it up to the starting gate for every race and eight of them even ran the two of the Spring Creek hare scrambles. Total dedication to racing! Another award went to the graduating class of 2014, those youngsters that were moving up from the Pee Wee track to the home of the big bikes, 65cc on the full size track. Congrats, kids. Now just keep on going until you hit the +60 class!

Fantastic D16 Annual Banquet Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin November 8th, 2014

hasing a goal. That’s a big part of what the annual District 16 Awards Banquet is all about... recognizing those that dove into the season, and went for that class championship. You don’t have to win a class to enjoy this event always held on the second Saturday of November. If you were part of the effort, be it a family member, a friend, or even a racer that was there every weekend, never getting the great finishes you needed, this evening is for you. Everyone comes together to celebrate, and recognize the top finishers at the end of the season. That’s our reason for being here, but what we enjoy the most is getting together with our racing family. This is an evening of

relaxing, eating, drinking a little if you wish, and hanging out with like minded people. There’s a lot of reliving the fun moments of the season past, and laughing at the maybe less than perfect times. This is where even you get to enjoy the story about your bike breaking down a mile back in the woods, on the last lap of that hot August hare scrambles. Or getting caught in the gate, in both motos at the first race of the season. These and all the other stories are lost on anyone that hasn’t been there themselves. Everyone here gets it though. No one is in a hurry tonight. Everyone is smiling, and enjoying the time, just as it should be. If you haven’t been joining all of us, you’re missing out.

The banquet was again held at the very cool, and very large Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI. Last year’s move to having all the awards given out in one room went over so well, it was done again. Everyone coming for the dinner enters the room early, and the food is great. No one left hungry. After a couple hundred racers and families members enjoy dinner, another large mass of people join the group for the awards portion of the evening. There were a number of drawings for goodies provided by sponsors and the district... plus two new motorcycles. One drawn for anyone with a District 16 card, and another where raffle tickets are sold. Two lucky winners each went home with a new Kawasaki KLX110... thank you to Southeast Sales for helping make this possible! The DOC360 crew had a full skid of product that everyone had an opportunity to get a share of, as well as graphic kits for many of the class winners. Their booth is always a very popular spot for families to grab photos of their racers. Hundreds of beautiful plaques, stacks of cool jackets and much more all left in the hands of excited, and deserving riders. Long time District 16 AMA Congresswomen Maureen Welch was recognized for her many years of service. She has been involved in the road side of District 16 for a long time... beginning back at a time when road riders were a pretty big part of D16. Thank you Maureen! Dave Arva, our D16 Motocross Referee, AMA Congressman, and actually one of the founders of the District (yes, he is that young) announced

last year that he was going to cut back, and we welcome Eric Uren as the new motocross referee going into 2015. Big shoes to fill for sure, and we appreciate Eric stepping up and getting involved. The district, like local clubs all need help from new members... the same people have been volunteering for a long time... and they can’t take care of us forever. Dave will still be around, helping in the background, and involved with the AMA... thank goodness! Hopefully we still see Dave at a bunch of races during the summer. Doug Forstner got together with District 16 to present a special plaque - that went along with a standing ovation to help show our appreciation of all those years Dave has given. These are all part of the special moments shared at these annual

banquets. We congratulate all the Champions, and other top finishers.
