From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It has been a busy start to 2017, with awards ceremonies, the International Motorcycle show and board meetings. Our annual business meeting was held on December 17th and here’s a short summary of the meeting. Election of board members was the first order of business, many of the positions were filled by incumbents. We do have a few new members which is always nice to see. MX Mini Quad will be represented by Jim Tibbets. Rules changes for the 2017 season in the ARMCA rulebook are as follows. 1.To earn volunteer bonus points in both an amateur class and youth class the racer must meet the Volunteer requirements set for the amateur classes. Applies to both Hare Scrambles and enduros 2.All Enduro classes will match the Hare Scrambles class structure. 3.Change to Volunteer Bonus Point Rule. A District 23 club that sanctions competition events for the same year can offer board members volunteer bonus points for that member only. 4.In motocross the +45B/C class will be split into a +45B and a separate +45C 5.Quad MX: Add 16-29 Open cc class. 6.Flat track Add: Quad Open 200/400 (up to 200cc 2 stroke or 400cc 4 stroke 7.Eliminate the 250/450A class, replace with 250A and Open A 8.Eliminate the +40 class change +30 to +25. 9.Flat track Quad: add a Quad Knobby class 91 cc to open now sway bar no lowering kits. Announcements, personal stuff, and.... and scored by moto as in the past. This brings you up to speed on changes. At the AMA level a racer will have to be 16 years old on the day of the meet to race a bike over 350cc. In 2018 that is going to change to 251cc and up. 2018 will mark our 50th anniversary, we are making plans to celebrate that important landmark. We will be introducing a contest for a new 50th anniversary logo open to all members with an artistic bend. We will also be looking to run some special events as part of the celebration. Please forward your ideas to myself or any board member so we can get to work on this project. I will try to keep you all up to date with the business and workings of the district as we move through the year. In the meantime get into your training regime on track as we are very close to the start of the 17 season. See you on the roads, tracks and trails of Minnesota.

65cc 7-11 gets ready for the gate drop in moto one.
Cedar Lake Indoor pulls a great mid-January crowd! New Richmond, Wisconsin - January 21 Cedar Lake Arena
T
here was a time when motocross bikes got stuffed into the corner of your garage after the final race... unless you were one of those diehards that converted the bike for ice racing/ riding. Years back this really cool indoor facility opened in NW Wisconsin, just a short hop east of Minneapolis, MN. Some still refer to it as the Sandbox... but it is correctly called the Cedar Lake Arena. Regardless, it is a very cool facility for riding and racing during the winter months. The facility holds four stadium styled motocross events each winter... the first back in mid December. We couldn’t make the trip for that one with a significant winter storm pushing through, but luckily joined the masses there for round two on January 21st. Dry roads and great weather for January made the trip an easy one for anyone in the midwest and over 250 entries filled the afternoon program, from a five state area. The 50cc class riders were out in
force, with multiple divisions needed at times to narrow the field into a final. In 50cc Injected 4-8, eleven riders left the line in the first moto. Out front, Sammy Toupal was on a mission to open up a gap. Quickly he had the breathing room needed to pound out smooth laps the rest of the moto for the win. By the end of the second lap Cash Wilsey was also looking good on his KTM, putting a small gap on Louis Oswald and Gunner Burke. The order held with Parker Noaeill making a late pass on Grayson Wirth for fifth. Toupal had a tip over in the first lap of the second moto, but was up quick enough to stay in the lead for an eventual
second win. Behind him, the riders were in the same positions by the start of the second lap, finishing in the same order. It was great seeing nineteen riders

in 50cc 4-6! Sammy Toupal returned to stand out in the first heat, leading every lap. Brady Brasch was in second for a while but ended up not finishing as Louis Oswald and Stylz Grall climbed into second and third. Cobra mounted Coen Abel pushed into an early lead in the second heat and simply pulled away for an impressive win ahead of some other talented young riders. Kayden Brandenburg held down second ahead of Raeleigh Hettich on her Yamaha and Tucker Couette. In the final moto, the two earlier winners lined up, both looking quite ready for the test. Abel got the holeshot with Toupal right there. They stayed very close right to the white flag lap before Abel finally pulled a few bike lengths and took the big win. Both riders had their advantages on the track. Abel in the corners and Toupal was really quick through the whoops. Grall had a great ride to finish third, a bike length ahead of Jameson Olson and Brandenburg.
The elder 50cc class riders in the 78 Senior class had fourteen entries. Standout in the class was Kai Morgan on his Cobra. The youngster was almost scary fast. Jumping some of the larger jumps, and even those he couldn’t clear, he was hitting them hard enough to shake the ground on each landing. (I’d hate to be the one keeping his bikes up.) As Morgan ran off with both moto wins, Cain Larson
rode smart to 2-3 motos for second overall on his KTM. Wisconsin’s Wyatt Hastings put in a good first moto in third, but went down in moto two. Cade Groen couldn’t finish the first moto, but redeemed himself by finishing second in moto two. William Tucker’s 4-5 was good for third overall ahead of the 6-6 fourth overall ride by James Schaffer. 65cc 7-11 also had a dozen riders

One of the biggest things I have going for me out there is that I’m hitting the finish line jump, and that gives me a couple seconds every lap.” Mutcscler had a better run in this moto, pulling off a third place finish ahead of Leo Tucker. Caleb Bohlman had a rough first moto finishing near the back, but crossed in fifth this time, just inches behind Mutcscler. 250C had twenty-nine riders, so it was split into two divisions. Ry Baumann had the hot hand early in division one, grabbing the holeshot. He led the first lap, with a mess of riders right behind. A small error left the door open and Baumann was immediately swallowed up. Kado Vandeberg jumped into the lead on his Yamaha ahead of Dave #87 Coen Abel and Sammy Toupal with their fathers Seiler and Farmington, after they went 1-2 in the nineteen rider 50cc 4-6 class.

After falling in the heat race, I’m really happy how this all turned out.” Oftedahl pushed Johnson hard for the first half of the moto, with first heat race winner Vandeberg quickly moving into third. They worked through the laps in that order, with Boatman making a last lap pass into fifth after a bad start, good for fourth overall behind Oftedahl. Oftedahl after his second place. “I had to come from behind in the heat race so that helped with the final. I had a decent start and pulled out to battle with Jordan for the lead for a while. He just had a little more tonight and pulled away. This is the first time I’ve been here this year and I’m really liking the track. It has a good flow and it’s a lot of fun. It was cool having all the racers today as well.” Big winner for the night was Vandeberg. His 1-3 scores held up to top Johnson and Oftedahl in the overall. 250A was actually one of the smallest classes, but as always it delivered some exciting racing. Elko, MN’s Joe Perron railed the first turn on his Yamaha to take over with Nick Schnagl latching onto his pace immediately. In the second lap, half way through one of the big bowl corners, Perron slammed his front wheel into an outside rut. Meantime, South Dakota’s always quick Austin Kienast jumped past Jacob Wilke for third. Schnagl, once out front put in perfect laps while holding off Perron to take the win. Moto two saw Schnagl grab the slightest of holeshots to lead Perron through the whoops, with Wilke in third. By the second lap Perron was in front, and they were swapping spots each lap. Schnagl, “I got the holeshot and Joe and I got together a bit in the first moto so we knew it was coming again this time. We talked before the moto to make sure it stayed clean and it was a battle right to the last corner. He got the lead at the end, but I’m still happy how it turned out because it was a good close race. The crew did a great job prepping the track for sure!” Perron enjoyed the great moto as well, “Nick and I had quite a battle. He got the holeshot and then I passed him half a lap in. We went back and forth from there right to the end. It was good and clean even though we
banged a little, we’re friends and I look forward to racing like that for sure. Plainview Powersports, Black Diamond MX, PDR’s Perron used his second moto efforts to grab the overall while Wilke held on for third after being pushed all moto by Kienast. Later, Schnagl took moto wins ahead Perron and then Nick Jackson for the Open A class overall.
250B saw an impressive rider from Wisconsin’s Carter Biese on his 125cc Husqvarna. Biese pulled into the lead exiting the whoop on the first lap. Railing every part of the track, he stretched his lead all the way to the finish. His pace on the smaller bore bike was pretty cool, even more so as he had plenty of talented riders behind him. Josh Boaz, Nick Fox, John Matejka and Shane Halverson ran 25 through each lap. OC Racing/ Fly/ Scott/ Powersports 1 rider Biese led every lap of the second moto as well. “It was a good day. I got my starts and was able to put in solid laps to get wins in four motos. (This and Schoolboy) With the 125 it is really about carrying speed through the corners and making the best of it. You are a little underpowered, but you can make that work for you as well. This is fun racing in here for sure.” Boaz took over second out of the first turn with Fox pushing him through the first three laps. As they took the white flag, the two were pretty locked into the spots, with Brady Peterson working through most of the pack to finish back a ways in fourth. A big improvement from his first moto ninth, where he

When you pass someone, they always try to come right back at you, so it is always hard. When I finally worked into fourth the riders in front were a ways ahead so I just held my lines to finish there.” Cole Godrey is always fast, and in 85cc 12-15 he pulled a holeshot to prove it in the first moto. Eli Tetzlaff and Harry Gibson were close behind through the first whoops. On the move, Jordan Biese (Carter’s younger brother) went by Gibson in the second corner. Next, he went under Tetzlaff in the final corner before the end of the opening lap. Godfrey came under fire right away, but pushed back a couple times through the second lap. It was a near perfect day... just warm enough and nice and sunny - the kind of day us “non winter” guys really like. One of the first races out was on the GP style course, with a mix of left and right hand corners built into the standard oval. The Open Amateur bikes saw Joel Bayerl get into the lead in the first tight GP corner, and never give it up. He eventually pulled a couple of bike lengths on Honda rider Kevin Weivoda, having made the trip over from LaCrosse. Andrew Engen ran in third as William Larson had his hands full all race, holding off Corey Schroeder on his Suzuki. He had the speed then hit a bump big enough to send him off line and back to fourth behind Hamburgur. Leu took the win as Bradley’s run (3-2) earned second overall ahead of Hamburgur and Mark Will (6-4). The same riders mixed it up in 450 Pro. Leu led the first moto with Muth all over him in every corner, not to miss the fact that Bradley was a couple inches off them both. They stayed glued to each other to the finish. In the second moto, Leu led Bradley and Muth early. This time, Bradley seemed to put it all on the line. Not protecting his lines against Muth, he took every shot at Leu, often using a longer outside line. Just when it

Engen gave up riding safe on the last laps and pulled some longer outside lines trying to run at the leader. On the final lap he pulled next to Wappler into turn three and four. At the flag it was close enough you needed the scorer’s view to see Wappler had held on for the win. Jacob Rusch finished fourth ahead of Nick Randrup, Megan Funk and Adam Graham. The second moto all came down to the start, as Engen got a great jump and led them through the first turns. From there he never flinched and got the overall as well. District 23 Motocross Banquet another Winner! Mounds View, Minnesota - January 14 AMA District 23 Motocross Banquet
A
fter all the racing is done at the final events of the District 23 season, attention turns to celebrating, and there’s no better way than with the annual banquets. Plenty of riders will keep their bikes available for winter riding at indoor facilities, or even out on the ice, but on this special Saturday afternoon in January all that gets put on hold. In District 23 there are several banquets, as Motocross, Off-road, Dirt Track and Hillclimb all have their own events. The 2016 Motocross season awards ceremony was held at the Mermaid Event Center in Mounds View MN, just north of Minneapolis. This was the second year here and it was another great event. Once again District 23’s Owen Riess pulled together a great program and evening
for all the happy riders and family members. While we hope to see Owen involved in the future, he is taking a step back for 2017, letting Lisa Boaz take over the official coordination efforts. Lisa was already quite involved this past season, work-
ing with Missy and Mike Janovsky as well as other board members on getting a ton of great prizes from sponsoring companies as well as D23 clubs and promoters. The awards were new again this year. Nice plaques and jacket options
Samantha Laderer awarded three riders for outstanding sportsmanship on and off the track. Curtis Biorn, Riley Taber and Broc Today were each given a choice of 5 free race entries or a new set of gear.

left everyone smiling. The awards went over really well, and there were a ton of them handed out by the time you work through all the classes, yet it was all done with great efficiency and plenty of time for photos and proper recognition. The fantastic awards program booklet with rider photos for all the disciplines was well done, and everyone attending was happy to grab one on the way in. Before the awards and drawings were all given out, the evening started with an excellent sit down dinner. The room was filled, near capacity as it was last year. Many riders and their families were staying the night in the adjacent hotel, making a weekend of the special activities. Following dinner, Leslie and Mark Vanderwerf (D23 board members) thanked everyone for coming, and shared news of the upcoming 2017 season. Then it was on the awards, with Mark continuing at the podium. As Mark worked through the list of classes, calling everyone to the front, other volunteers handed out awards, and called out rider names for the huge amount of donated prizes. The goal to make sure every rider went home with something was accomplished! Pulling this entire evening together, reaching out to sponsors, handling the awards program with all the rider photos, it is a huge amount of work,

and it takes a truely dedicated team, usually led by one really committed individual. As already mentioned, Lisa Boaz is taking this on for 2017. We caught up with her after the banquet to ask her thoughts on it all, and what may be coming after the 2017 season. Boaz, “Getting involved with the D23 banquet seemed like a logical next step as I joined the board as a class rep in 2016. One of my favorite aspects of the banquet this year was getting my family involved. My husband, Rick, was taking pictures. Our son, Josh, was helping hand out

awards and our youngest daughter Krista was running the computer for the slide show. The Mermaid Event Center has been good to us the past couple years but I felt we needed to look for a facility that would better fit a larger group. I’m excited to take over the banquet for the upcoming year. We will be returning to Treasure Island on January 13, 2018. We’re trying something new and will be having a brunch followed by the awards (rather than dinner as in years past).
Smiles and happy people filled the room!
Kids seem to always steal the show
One of the challenges of scheduling the D23 MX banquet is finding a facility that is large enough and also affordable. Our members also like to have a hotel attached to the facility which adds another element. I’m looking forward to trying the brunch banquet which helps with costs while allowing those attendees who choose to stay the night more time during the day to enjoy the amenities that Treasure Island has to offer. 2017 will also provide us with an exciting new opportunity as the num-
ber of races required to qualify for a D23 MX Year End Award have been reduced to ten. Hopefully this increases the number of riders qualifying for an award which will increase the number of attendees at the banquet. There is a large group of people who work hard at making each banquet successful, I’m looking forward to being part of that group for 2017.” This event only comes once a year and without a doubt, it is always special. It is definitely one of the highlights of the season. If you haven’t
chased the dream of a top finish for the season, you’re missing out. Even more than getting recognized for your success at the banquet, the real reward comes every week at the races. Not only are you involved in the greatest sport ever, but the relationships you’ll build as a frequent participant will last a lifetime. Just being part of it all is a huge reward. In 2017, give it a try. Fully engage in this sport and you’ll enjoy it even more. You don’t have to win a class, or even be a top finisher to enjoy this event as everyone is welcome. There’s always a number of riders and families that come just to spend time with thier moto friends. It’s always cool to be part of this event. Seeing the smiles on the racer’s faces as they receive their awards, proud friends and family members looking on. It’s a prefect way to spend a Saturday in the dead of winter. Make sure to come celebrate and enjoy the “moto family” next January.
We are excited to offer the first Sprint Enduro in District 23! Simply put, Sprint Enduro is individual off-road motorcycle racing, against the clock. Picture the sweetest, best flowing grass track combined with some great trails, and you holding it wide open for 6-10 minutes around the track trying to do a lap as quick as possible. This is an Enduro, so you're racing against the clock, not head-to-head against other riders.

LTM’s Snowflake Shootout Opens District 17 MX Season Casey, Illinois - February 19 By James & Rollanda Pinckard
T
he second annual Snowflake Shootout welcomed 478 entries from seven states and Canada. Planning a race in the middle of February seemed crazy, but for the second year in a row the riders were welcomed by spring like weather. With the great weather the LTM track crew did an outstanding job and the Classic Track was amazing! The riders had perfect dirt and it got rough, providing great racing for every class. Every racer was excited to be back at the track. Some were breaking in new bikes; some were suffering from riding the couch all winter but all had huge smiles. If this weekend was any indication of what the 2017 racing season will be, we know it will be outstanding. The first moto of the day was for the Open C class. With it sporting thirty-two entries you knew it would be full of action and a great way to get things started. The crowd lined the fences waiting for the start and you could feel the excitement in the air. The gate dropped to the roar of two and four-strokes thundering into the first turn. Out front it was Yamaha rider Joshua Franklin with the first holeshot of the season. Franklin had his YZ250 two-stroke out front and smoking with a hungry pack of riders on his tail. While Franklin was laying down fast times, he had Eric Navel running second ahead of Seth Bowman and Suzuki rider Austin Hetzler. Bowman was pick-
ing up the pace and worked past Navel disappointing. I rode well but just had into second and then set out after the some bad luck today.” leader. With In the +40 class Yamaha rider Billy Bowman trying to get his YZF450 going Fosnock took the holeshot in the first again both Navel and Hetzler slipped past. Franklin took the win in the first moto of 2017. Bowman finally restarted to finish fourth behind Navel and Hetzler in third. In the second moto, when the pack hit the first turn two blue bikes out front. Franklin and Bowman were once again leading. Franklin was looking like he was going to take the holeshot until his front end pushed. It sent him into a swap that dropped him back to fifth. Bowman led the pack with Kawasaki rider Brock Shoemaker second, Dillon Cantrell third, and Hetzler fourth. Bowman was flying but on this day luck wasn’t on his side as soon after getting out front his bike died. Bowman eventually got going and worked his way to ninth for the moto giving him fifth overall. Bowman, “I don’t know what happened… it Billy Fosnock went 1-2 just died on the straight. Man, it’s for second overall in +40

moto. After coming off a serious injury last season it was good to see him back at the track. Fosnock looked very smooth and fast leading the way with Suzuki rider Mark Smith in second, Kawasaki rider Andy Brown in third and Bill Loy fourth. At the finish the order was the same. When the second moto gate dropped Fosnock charged to the front again. Smith had other plans and kept charging after Fosnock. On the last lap he slipped his Suzuki into the lead and

across the finish line for the moto and overall win. Third for the moto and overall went to Loy. One rider who came out swinging in 2017 was Kawasaki rider Edgar Lewis. Lewis showed he has been doing his homework over the winter. He took aim on the 85SR class and hit his target perfectly. Lewis was flat-out flying, leading every lap of the first moto. Kawasaki rider Brandon Bollino and KTM rider Hunter Billingsley were in tow the whole
race, sealing the top three. In the second moto Lewis again was on the gas and sailed to the moto win. Behind him, Billingsley was chasing Lewis all the way to the finish and ended up second for the moto and overall. Bollino put in a strong ride for third. The next class Lewis attacked was Supermini. This race was as easy as 1-2-3 because Lewis had his Kawasaki across the line first both motos and overall. Kawasaki rider Alyssa Cole took second both motos while Billingsley finished third. You just can’t escape this event without talking about the 250C class. The biggest reason for all the conversation was that there were 40 riders, a full gate. Track owner Tim Jackson said “I’m going to have to get some more gates and that’s a good thing.” With all the riders everyone wanted to see the start of the first moto and got what they paid for as a huge pileup in the first turn set back the plans of some of the fastest in the class. One rider that was clear of the damage was Yamaha rider
Banging bars in 250B.
Bobby Panarisi, who went on and showed he was the best in the class taking the first moto win. KTM rider Steven Grundtner finished second with Austin Hetzler third. In the second moto the pack made it through the first turn and the crowd was rewarded with what they really wanted to see - great racing! Yamaha rider Dillon Cantrell was out of there and set a pace no other could match this race, taking the win. Panarisi finished second with Yamaha rider Jacob McGee third. With a great moto behind them it was to the tower to see how the results shook out. The winner of the biggest class of the day was Bobby Panarisi with 1-2 motos. Second overall went to Honda rider Cody Willenborg with 5-4 scores ahead of third overall Justin Duke (4-6). Dillon Nelson pulled out all the stops on his lucky charm to snare that beast and all that was left for the rest of us was to dream of next year… Thanks to all the sponsors that make the Super Series and the banquet pos-
sible… including the two above mentioned plus Team VRM, Catallia Mexican Food, Dunlop, Peter and Willy Draheim, KTM, Mazeppa Area Jaycees, 4MX Graphics, Linders Specialty Co., Pro Kart Indoors, 100%, Motorex, BDMX, Thor, Parts Unlimited, Vaith Cycle, J&B Pallets and Crashed Toys.com.

The first corner was tight in HW, but Jacob Wiedmeyer #38 on the 328 Powersports entry came out in front.
Lodi, Wisconsin - January 14 By Dave Hollub
T
he Madison Motorcycle Club returned to hosting an Ice race after a six year absence and they pulled it off as if they never stopped. The Frosty Cheeks Three Hour was held on Crystal Lake near Lodi Wisconsin January 14th. In the
week leading up to the race we had great ice making temperatures hovering near zero but a lack of snow cover was going to make laying out the track difficult. Then with just two days to spare two inches of snow fell and the track was plowed out. When racers began arriving at the Crystal Lake Campground early Saturday morning the skies were clear and the tempera-

ture was in the mid teens. The event saw a lot of fast guys ready to mix it up. At noon the Lightweight bikes got the first gate drop and the US Chrome bike piloted by Bruce Wadman got the jump on Jennifer LaTour aboard the Latitude Graphics entry. The US Chrome team managed to hold on mid pack overall all day on their way to the lightweight win. Latitude Graphics crossed the finish second in class, six bikes back overall. LaTour after the race, “I had a blast. It was a great track today and the weather held up perfect. The track stayed mint all day, the outside lines started getting a little fluffy towards the end but the plow guys did a great job keeping it consistent all day. I wish more women would be out here doing these races. Women should know this is easier than riding dirt, people think ice is slippery but with the studded tires you get so much more traction. I really have to thank Adam Bude and Latitude Graphics for having me on the team. Also thanks to Vetesnik Powersports,
Mike Westphahl, Ken Thompson, Acerbis Plastic, and EKS brand Goggles for helping us out. I had a blast and plan to be here next year, hopefully more people will come out as well.” Marc Ottenad pushed the Lemon Pie Productions (John Stewart/ Marc Ottenad) middleweight bike around the first corner in the lead with the Latitude Graphics middleweight entry right behind. MidwestEnduros.com (Ryan Miss/ Travis Held) and then Xcel Racing (Chad Pergrande/ Chad Yesko/ Jacob Yesko) rounded out the top
four at the start. Latitude Graphics was forced off the course with a mechanical issue Tight racing was the order of the day. Here Pete Laubmeier (29) just a couple laps into the race. gets to the inside with team Knobbie Tire (42) and Team O Town. By the one hour mark Lemon neck as they ran 1-2-3 overall. The Pie was leading the class, running final hour of the race had Morgan Missixth overall, second was MidwestEnchler now on the Mischler’s entry duros with Xcel in third. At the two holding onto the lead and finally hour mark Lemon Pie was still in the crossing the finish for the class and lead and had moved up one spot in the overall wins. Tylor Skodras took over overall. Xcel got around MidwestEnthe 328 Powersports bike and was able duros as they crossed at tenth and to move into second. Lake Wisconsin eleventh overall. Xcel Racing was on fell out of contention in the third hour the move and in the final hour moved with a mechanical leaving the 328 up through the bikes and finally slipped past Lemon Pie to grab the class win. With fourteen bikes the heavyweight class was today’s largest and at the holeshot Jacob Wiedmeyer on the 328 Powersports A Team (Jacob Wiedmeyer/ Tylor Skodras) bike edged out the P501 Suspension/Track Support bike as well as the Lake Wisconsin Campground bike. Dan Mischler riding the Mischler's HD BMW bike (Dan Mischler/ Morgen Mischler) pushed from a fourth place start into the class lead (second overall) before the first hour was in the books with 328 Powersports and Lake Wisconsin close behind. With two hours complete Mischler’s was still out front but now had Lake Wisconsin Campground and 328 Working together in the pits is part of the Powersports breathing down his fun involved with running for three hours.
Powersports B-Team (Mike Wiedmeyer/ Kyle Liesener) the final podium position. Jennifer Kessemic of the Slo Daddy team “ What a day, I smiled non stop on and off the bike. I loved the Fredette tire on the back, it hooked up even in the fluff and the front hooked up just right. These races are so much fun because the racers are incredibly polite when they pass, I’m not the fastest out there. I like riding dirt but to come out here on ice is amazing, running into a corner then hitting the rear brake and feeling the tire slide you into the corner is just orgasmic. These young guys have it nailed but I’m a middle aged woman and to experience this is so much fun. Today was just a fun day, we were on bike number 23,we did 23 laps and we placed 23rd overall. This race was really interesting because the track was all turns, not really any long straights, so you were always setting up for the next corner. I will definitely feel it tomorrow. Thanks to Mack Daddy Racing for the bike and CYCLE USA, March 2017

great setup, and Jeffrey Carver. I will be back next year because these guys put on a great event today.” Dan Mischler commented, “I started off for our team in fourth. The first few corners had really tight racing but as the course opened up I came up on the third place bike and got around him. The first two bikes were battling so I just rode hard at my pace and by the end lap four I got by both of them. From then on I never looked back riding hard and having fun scraping footpegs in the corners until the halfway point when Morgen took over.” Morgen Mischler, “Dan turned over a pretty good lead and I didn’t want to blow it so I aimed at riding consistent, hitting the marks I wanted. I took a digger like two laps in and my hands were cold but the adrenaline kicked in and I warmed up fast. I didn’t want to let Dan down so I got on and got going. It was pretty smooth from there and we had a great three hour run. Dan’s setup on the bike was great and it ran flawless.” Dan continued “The Madison Motorcycle Club put on an absolute top notch show from the layout to a great job plowing all day. Thanks to our sponsors Mischler’s HD BMW, Bell Helmets, KLIM Performance Gear, Fredette Racing Products, and our longtime sponsor the Beaver Cycle Club.” Ironman got the final start grid and Lance Wollin powered the Sunset Bar & Grill entry to the holeshot first followed closely by Jeff Fredette, Pete Laubmeier, and Paul Olesen. Wollin wasn’t wasting any time as he sliced his way through the field completing the first lap in sixth place overall. By lap four Wollin was out front and taking advantage of the clear track to gap everyone. At the one hour mark Wollin was leading with two heavyweight bikes between himself and Fredette in second. Laubmeier had third with Olesen fourth. Wollin was forced out by a flat tire around the 1 hour 45 minute mark and Fredette took over the class lead crossing the two hour mark in fourth overall. Laubmeier, Olesen, and Jim Kirschbaum rounded 42

out the top four. Fredette took the win with Laubmeier second. Kirschbaum made a charge in the final sixty minutes to take third as he edged out Olesen. Madison Motorcycle Club member Patrick Mullarkey took on the task of race organization and with the help of the members the race became reality. As the day wound down Mullarkey finally had time to reflect, “Today was great, the weather was perfect and we had a good field of racers for a first race. The course layout by John Strangfeld and Pete Laubmeier was good with a lot of turns and some technical sections which made it competitive and interesting for the riders. Thanks to Crystal Lake Campground for hosting us, Moose Racing, Latitude Graphics for the number plates, and Chris Mulhall for the trophies he made. Something like this really takes a team effort and the guys in the club really came out and put in several hard days work to make this happen. They all put in a lot of hard work and time.
Also thanks to the Sumners for scoring all day. Hopefully next year draw even more racers.” Today’s racing couldn’t have been better and the top three bikes all completed thirty laps on the 4.2 mile course for a total of 126 miles. There was a lot of tight bar to bar racing as the riders were able to use all the lines to their liking. Hopefully this will be repeated again next winter and many more to come with the great work of Madison Motorcycle Club. Fantastic D16 Banquet Wisconsin Dells, WI - November 12 AMA District 16 Banquet
T
he annual AMA District 16 Banquet returned to the Wisconsin Dells on the second weekend of November. This once again took place at the awesome Kalahari Resort that we have raved about in the past. To summarize the weekend, it was fantastic! A little background... planning for the 2016 Awards Banquet actually started the Sunday after last year’s event in 2015. The D16 board gets together the morning after the banquet to evaluate everything from the previous night while details and ideas are fresh. With Melissa Ellingson stepping in as the coordinator going forward, there were plenty of hopes for making the weekend even better, a big challenge as the banquet was pretty darn good already. Over the year that followed many e-mails, a couple meetings, and a lot of hard work went into changes for 2016. Melissa taking on a big part of the ef-

Saturday morning saw another day of meeting where all the other divisions gather for the same work in the morning, then come together for handling district business for the year. Riders and families are welcome to attend these meetings as they wish. Not to fully participate, but they can surely contribute and are usually welcome to address everyone on important topics. Every year we are lucky to have a few join in. Now for the best part of the weekend - the Awards Jr Lofquist Award Winner Skylar Dosch with her family. She recognized by District 16 for all the time she continues Banquet. nice extra for everyone attending the dinner. Outside the check in area dealers had displays. Spectro, Moose, County Cycle and Country Sports were all represented. Inside, Sportland2, DOC and Fly had displays. Courtesy of these and other sponsors like Rob’s Performance, Pro Motorsports, Port Yamaha, Golden Eagle Homes, Suburban Motors HD, Team 2 and more, there was three large tables covered with door prizes - not to mention another podium display with grand prizes. This year everyone on the way in got tickets, plus had the option to buy more raffle tickets - basically an arm’s length at a time. Our D16 Dual Sport director Brett Lobajeski quickly became a crowd favorite... as everyone realized he had the longest reach of the evening. He was everyone’s designated ticket “arm’s length” guy.

Dinner kicked off right on time with just under 300 in attendance - outstanding food as always. After everyone enjoyed the full meal and desert, the doors were opened to the additional nearly 300 riders and family members that had purchased awards only tickets. Everyone split into two rooms (new this year) where all the fantastic awards were given out. DOC, as a primary sponsor stepped up huge by helping D16 get all the jackets - and they were really cool. Plaques and jackets were handed out over the next 90 minutes or so before everyone returned to the main room for all the drawings - including a cool fat tire bicycle from County Cycle, two brand new Honda Grooms from Sportland2, two Yamaha generators, a Briggs & Stratton power washer, GoPro cameras, a ton of gear, accessories, parts and more. Cool thing this year was with all those raffle tickets - you could drop them in baskets for whatever prizes you

wanted to shoot for. If young kids gear was appealing to you, you could make that choice and go after that large prize package. I think there was like fifteen of these large packages to choose from. When all the prizes were handed out and done, tickets were all combined back in for the grand ten prize drawings. It made for a ton of fun, and many, many happy winners!
When the drawings were done... music started up courtesy of a DJ. This may have been the only disappointment of the entire evening. Not the great music or fun those of us that hung around had, but the point that many families and riders ran off following the drawings. After years of there not being entertainment following everything else, I think most just left out of habit. Another possible reason so many left, is all the other entertainment the resort offers. The waterpark, bowling, full game and activity rooms as well as two bars and more. Kids and families had been going and having fun all day - by now many were just plain worn out - a really good sign of how cool this weekend here is. Myself and the others that stayed for the music had a ball... and we expect this part of the evening will really take off next year. After the banquet, we caught up with the coordinator Melissa and asked what she thought of the evening, all the work and the future. This, after she quickly agreed to take it all on again in 2017. Melissa, “As the new coordinator for the annual banquet, the process was quite the learning experience. I’ve planned many events but the language of the dealerships was very foreign to me at first. Each rider/ family should feel honored to be working with such amazing District 16 sponsors. We couldn’t have done what we did this year without the patience of the owners and their willingness to open up to us about their business, as well as sharing what they wanted to see for the future of our District. Watching the banquet unfold was the best part for me. Stepping back, watching everyone enjoying themselves makes all the work involved worth it. I couldn’t ask for a better start with District 16. The Kalahari had amazing staff ready to assist anytime we needed it, allowing the banquet to keep flowing. DOC, Moose Racing and Sportland2 contributed so much as well. They really deserve more than we can ever give back. I
